  • MIL-OSI USA: Gillibrand Demands Answers From HHS On Mass Firings At HRSA That Imperil Primary Care and Maternal Health

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New York Kirsten Gillibrand

New York Has Over 4,300 HRSA Health Care And Service Delivery Sites

So Far In FY2025, HRSA Has Awarded Over $256 Million In Funding To Health Programs And Facilities In New York

Firings Include Workers Who Oversee The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline, Which Gillibrand Helped Establish in 2022

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) led nine of their colleagues in sending a letter demanding answers from Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on the abrupt and unprecedented mass firing of Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) employees. HRSA is the primary federal agency tasked with improving access to health care for vulnerable populations, including uninsured and underinsured children and families and individuals living in rural communities.

New York has over 4,300 HRSA Health Care and Service Delivery Sites, which are facilities that are funded by or participate in HRSA programs. So far in FY2025, HRSA has awarded over $256 million in funding to these facilities and other health programs across New York State. These grants help fund health care facilities in rural areas; support programs that help patients living with HIV/AIDS, substance use disorder, maternal health complications, and cancer; and bolster health care workforce training programs across the state. Firing HRSA employees imperils their ability to provide care to New Yorkers and potentially puts this funding in jeopardy.

These firings also include layoffs of HRSA workers who run the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline, which provides free, 24/7 support to pregnant and postpartum women facing mental health challenges. Senator Gillibrand helped establish the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline in 2022. Since its launch, the hotline has received more than 54,000 calls and texts — a large part of which have been from postpartum moms reporting depression, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed. Maternal mental health issues are the leading cause of pregnancy-related death in the United States. By firing the individuals who keep the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline operational, HHS is jeopardizing the lives of American moms.

“HRSA employees help struggling mothers, vulnerable children, uninsured patients, and individuals who live in rural areas access critical health care,” said Senator Gillibrand. “By indiscriminately firing these employees, the Trump administration is jeopardizing access to these vital services and threatening programs that help keep New Yorkers healthy. This is unacceptable, particularly at a time when our country is facing a health care workforce crisis. I am proud to work with my fellow senators to demand answers about these egregious firings at HHS, and I will not rest until our concerns are remedied.”

In addition to Sens. Gillibrand and Blunt Rochester, the letter was also signed by Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

The full letter can be found here and below:

    Dear Secretary Kennedy:

We write concerning the abrupt and unprecedented mass firing of Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) employees who serve vulnerable populations including children, seniors, uninsured Americans, and rural communities. Reportedly, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) used spreadsheets to slash entire divisions without fully understanding the critical functions that many of the former employees performed. Therefore, we request detailed information about who was fired, their specific job functions, and the measures you will implement to ensure that at-risk Americans do not suffer due to your Reduction in Force (RIF).

HRSA is the primary agency tasked with improving access to health care for vulnerable populations, including the un- and underinsured, children, and families. On March 27, 2025, HHS announced a rushed and ill-conceived RIF in accordance with President Trump’s Executive Order 14210, “Implementing the President’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ Workforce Optimization Initiative.” This is on top of the firing of seven percent of HRSA staff that occurred on February 14, 2025. These egregious staffing cuts have particularly decimated the Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), which not only runs counter to the administration’s goal of elevating preventative care and reducing the prevalence of chronic disease but comes at a time when the United States ranks last in maternal health outcomes relative to other high-income countries.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has reportedly fired 40 percent of the Bureau of Primary Health Care, which oversees the Health Center Program. This program effectively closes health care access gaps by providing high quality, affordable primary medical, dental, mental health care, and low-cost prescription drugs. Health centers provide care to over 32.5 million patients at 15,000 clinics across every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Pacific Basin. Health centers typically provide a wider array of lifesaving health care services for diverse populations impacted by barriers to care, serving one in five rural residents, one in three living in poverty, and over 400,000 veterans. Of the 32.5 million patients served by health centers, almost one-third are children, and 11 percent are seniors. A strong health center network is integral to increasing primary care access for people at every stage of life.

Through the Health Center Program, HRSA not only finances critical health care services, but safeguards patients from low-quality, inaccessible care. HRSA ensures that health centers comply with the highest health care standards to support improved clinical outcomes, improved access to services, and proper financial management. As a result of HHS’s actions, the ability of health centers to carry-out their critical mission of providing safe and accessible care is now in jeopardy, particularly at a time when the U.S. is facing a primary care workforce crisis.

Combined with the Health Center Program, HRSA administered health workforce programs through the Bureau of Health Workforce are our largest defense against nationwide workforce shortages that are driving preventable deaths. HRSA is critical to adequately staffing health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) with physicians, nurses, dentists, and mental health providers. As an increasing number of rural hospitals close- leaving many Americans without reasonable access to emergency, obstetric, primary, or specialty care- the country cannot afford to lose any investment in the health care workforce.

HHS has also terminated 20% of the employees at the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. This bureau oversees important programs that support children and pregnant women, such as the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Block Grant and the Healthy Start Program. These initiatives help reduce infant deaths, provide wrap-around services not covered by Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and reach families before, during, and after pregnancy. In 2023, the Title V MCH Services Block Grant helped provide services to an estimated 59 million people. This included 94% of all pregnant women, 98% of infants, and 59% of children nationwide, including children with special health care needs. Although your administration claims to support families, mothers, and children, you are actively undermining the health and wellbeing of these vulnerable groups.

At your direction, HHS has reportedly fired workers who oversee the Maternal Mental Health Hotline, which offers free and confidential support to the very large proportion of expectant and new mothers experiencing postpartum depression and anxiety, and mothers who simply need a listening ear during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. From October to December 2024, the hotline received 7,500 calls and texts— a majority of which were from postpartum parents, reporting depression, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed. Maternal mental health issues are the leading cause of maternal death in the United States. These firings could disrupt an essential support pathway for saving the lives of American moms.

We remain concerned that these indiscriminate firings have destabilized HRSA and reduced the ability of the agency to provide critical, quality services to the vulnerable populations at the core of its mission. We request a full account of the status of HRSA’s workforce and the impact these firings will have on the American people. Please respond to the following questions and requests for information by no later than Monday, April 21st at 5 p.m.:

    7. What instructions have been given to remaining staff about how to absorb workloads of terminated employees?
    8. What safeguards are in place to ensure that essential functions of HRSA are not harmed as a result of the RIF and proposed restructure of HHS??
    9. How does terminating grants under EO 14210 align with HRSA’s mission to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable populations and all Americans?
    10. Will you commit that, despite these terminations, HRSA will make all funding opportunity announcements for congressionally appropriated funding for Fiscal Year 2025 available immediately to allow communities the time necessary to develop robust proposals and that HRSA will award all congressionally appropriated funding by September 30th?

  • MIL-OSI USA: Klobuchar, Blackburn Introduce Bill to Prevent Human Trafficking

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn)

The Combatting Trafficking in Transportation Act would support public awareness campaign on the risk and signs of trafficking along the Interstate Highway System

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) introduced the Combating Trafficking in Transportation Act, which would provide federal funding to states post human trafficking awareness signage at rest stops and welcome centers along the Interstate System, helping educate the public and better support survivors of human trafficking.

“We must do everything in our power to stop human trafficking, and public awareness campaigns are a proven, effective tool to combat this issue,” said Klobuchar. “That is why we are introducing bipartisan legislation to provide more information about signs of trafficking and how to help victims. This bill will give law enforcement crucial information to take on criminals and get more victims to safety.”

As human traffickers move their victims across the country, they travel on the same highways and visit the same rest stops and gas stations as everyone else, which creates multiple opportunities to identify these victims,” said Blackburn. “This bipartisan legislation would give all states the flexibility to take advantage of signage campaigns that have been proven effective to rescue more men, women, and children from this heinous crime.”

In 2023 alone, there were nearly 17,000 trafficking victims in the United States. By making information about human trafficking available at these locations, we can increase reporting of suspicious behavior and direct victims to resources like the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

The Combating Trafficking in Transportation Act would:

    • Amend the list of eligible projects under the Surface Transportation Block Grant Program and the RAISE Discretionary Grant Program to include the procurement and installation of human trafficking awareness signage at rest stops and welcome centers along the Interstate System; and

    • Add a 16th seat to the Department of Transportation Advisory Committee on Human Trafficking specifically for a representative from state departments of transportation.

Home Newsroom Labrador Letter: Idaho Launches Summer Operation to Protect Children Online

    Dear Friends,
This week, I had the privilege of delivering the keynote address at the Idaho State Capitol to help launch Operation Safe Online Summer,a new statewide initiative led by the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. The operation will intensify efforts to identify and arrest online child predators during the summer months and highlights our continued commitment to protecting Idaho’s children from exploitation.
The kickoff event brought together law enforcement officers, prosecutors, legislators, and victim witness coordinators to recognize outstanding ICAC-affiliated partners and reinforce Idaho’s ongoing mission to protect children from online exploitation.
The newly launched Operation Safe Online Summer follows a national model similar to previous initiatives like Operation Broken Heart and will include enhanced investigative coordination, arrests, and community education on internet safety.
During the event, we also highlighted key legislative advancements, including Idaho’s new law criminalizing AI-generated child sexual abuse imagery (Idaho House Bill 46, 2024)—a forward-looking statute that gives prosecutors new tools to combat evolving digital threats.
ICAC leadership recognized several agencies and individuals for exemplary contributions to Idaho’s ICAC efforts:

Detective Christian Teague, Madison County Sheriff’s Office
Representatives Bruce Skaug and Dori Healey
    Canyon County Sheriff’s Office
    Kootenai County Prosecutor’s Office
    Coeur d’Alene Police Department

Xi’s Southeast Asia tour promotes good-neighborliness, mutually beneficial cooperation: Chinese FM

BEIJING, April 18 — Chinese President Xi Jinping’s just-concluded Southeast Asia tour focused on good-neighborly relations and promoted mutually beneficial cooperation, and achieved a complete success, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said during a press briefing that Xi’s trip to Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia from Monday to Friday was the first overseas tour of the Chinese head of state this year.

The tour sent a strong signal that China firmly defends multilateralism and international trade rules, Wang said.

On Xi’s visit to Vietnam, Wang said that the strategic guidance of the top leaders of the two parties and countries is the biggest advantage of and the most important political guarantee for the development of China-Vietnam relations.

The leaders of the two parties and countries unanimously confirmed that in accordance with the overarching goals characterized by “six mores,” the two sides will advance the development of their comprehensive strategic cooperation with higher quality and on deeper levels, and accelerate the building of a China-Vietnam community with a shared future that carries strategic significance, he said.

During Xi’s visit to Vietnam, bilateral railway cooperation has been expanded and upgraded, which particularly demonstrated the determination of the two countries to seek common development, Wang said.

On Xi’s visit to Malaysia, Wang said its most significant outcome was that the leaders of the two countries elevated China-Malaysia relations to a new height and announced the building of a high-level strategic China-Malaysia community with a shared future.

This marks another leap in the positioning of the bilateral relationship after China and Malaysia announced the joint building of a China-Malaysia community with a shared future in 2023, Wang noted.

A highlight of this visit is that the two sides agreed to become a pacesetter for regional cooperation on new quality productive forces, focusing on cutting-edge fields such as digital economy, green economy and artificial intelligence, he added.

Speaking of Xi’s visit to Cambodia, Wang noted that the highlight was the joint announcement by Xi and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on elevating the China-Cambodia relationship to an all-weather China-Cambodia community with a shared future in the new era, which marks the first time that China has elevated its bilateral relationship with a Southeast Asian country to an all-weather level.

Wang said that during Xi’s Southeast Asia tour, the Chinese president pointed out that economic globalization benefits all countries and no country can retreat into isolation.

Trade wars will undermine the international trading system, the stability of the global economic order and the legitimate interests of all countries in the world, especially developing countries, Xi noted.

As key members of the Global South, China and neighboring countries should strengthen coordination and cooperation, stand together to combat the undercurrent of camp-based confrontation, jointly oppose unilateralism and counter the law of the jungle where the strong prey on the weak with the Asian values of peace, cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, so as to safeguard the bright prospects of our Asian family, Xi said.

Xi underscored that despite the headwind of mounting protectionism, China will pursue high-quality development, expand high-standard opening up and share development opportunities with neighboring countries.

China’s mega market is always open to neighboring countries, and China welcomes more high-quality products from ASEAN members, he added.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Google loses online ad monopoly case. But it’s just one of many antitrust battles against big tech

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Rob Nicholls, Senior Research Associate in Media and Communications, University of Sydney

Tech giant Google has just suffered another legal blow in the United States, losing a landmark antitrust case. This follows on from the company’s loss in a similar case last year.

Social media giant Meta is also currently embroiled in a landmark legal battle in the US that could change not only how it operates, but how millions of people around the world communicate.

Hearings in the Meta case commenced earlier this week in a court in Washington DC, after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg failed to settle the case for US$450 million. Brought by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the suit alleges Meta broke antitrust laws and illegally secured a monopoly over social media platforms.

Along with Google and Meta, Amazon and Apple are also currently facing significant antitrust challenges in the US.

All of these actions are continuing despite major changes in both the FTC and the US Department of Justice as a result of the election of Donald Trump.

Collectively, these cases represent a substantial regulatory push to examine and potentially curb the market power of big tech. So what are all of these cases about exactly? What are the next steps in each of them? And what might they mean for consumers?

    The cases against Google

The case Google just lost was related to online advertising.

The US Department of Justice alleged Google had behaved anticompetitively to monopolise the complex digital advertising technology market. This market facilitates the buying and selling of online ads.

The US district judge, Leonie Brinkema, agreed Google has a monopoly over the tools used by online publishers to host ad space, and the software that facilitates transactions between online publishers and advertisers.

In her ruling, Judge Brinkema said Google had “wilfully engaged in a series of anticompetitive acts” which ultimately resulted in it obtaining “monopoly power in the open-web display publisher ad server market”.

Google has said it will appeal the decision. The Department of Justice will ask the court to require Google to divest parts of its ad tech business when the remedies phase of this trial starts later this month.

The second case involving Google is related to internet search.

The Department of Justice argued Google used exclusionary agreements, such as paying Apple billions annually to be the default search engine on iPhones, to lock out competitors.

In August 2024, a federal judge ruled Google acted illegally to maintain its search monopoly.

The case has now moved to the remedies phase. A crucial remedies trial is scheduled to begin next week. During this, the court will hear arguments on what actions should be taken against Google. Potential remedies could be significant, with regulators previously suggesting measures such as restrictions on Google’s Android operating system or even forcing the sale of its Chrome browser.

Google has stated its intention to appeal this ruling as well.

    The case against Meta

The FTC’s case against Meta alleges the tech giant illegally maintained a monopoly in the market for “personal social networking services”.

The core of the FTC’s argument is that Meta employed a “buy-or-bury” strategy to eliminate competitive threats.

This allegedly involved acquiring nascent rivals, most notably Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014, specifically to neutralise them before they could challenge Facebook’s dominance.

The FTC points to internal communications as evidence of anticompetitive intent. These include Mark Zuckerberg’s statement, “It is better to buy than compete”. They also include an internal memo which showed Zuckerberg considered spinning off Instagram in 2018 over concerns about antitrust scrutiny.

The commission argues Meta’s actions stifled innovation and harmed consumers by limiting choices. It’s seeking to force Meta to divest, or sell off, both Instagram and WhatsApp.

Meta vigorously defends its actions. It argues it does not hold a monopoly, facing fierce competition from platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and X (formerly Twitter).

The company contends the acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp were pro-competitive, allowing Meta to invest billions to improve and scale the apps, ultimately benefiting users. A key defence point is that the FTC itself reviewed and approved both deals over a decade ago.

The trial is expected to last eight weeks.

The cases against Apple and Amazon

In March 2024, the Department of Justice, along with several states, sued Apple, alleging it illegally maintains a monopoly in the smartphone market.

The lawsuit claims Apple uses its control over the iPhone ecosystem to stifle competition and innovation by, for example, degrading messaging quality between iPhones and Android devices and limiting the functionality of third-party digital wallets and smartwatches.

Apple filed a motion to dismiss the case in August 2024. The litigation is in its early stages and is expected to continue for several years.

In September 2023, the FTC, joined by numerous states, also sued Amazon.

The lawsuit alleges the tech giant unlawfully maintains monopoly power in both the market for “online superstores” (where consumers shop) and “online marketplace services” (for third-party sellers).

The FTC claims Amazon uses interlocking anticompetitive tactics. These include punishing sellers for offering lower prices elsewhere, coercing sellers into using its services, degrading search results with excessive ads, and charging exorbitant seller fees.

In late 2024, the presiding judge largely denied Amazon’s attempt to dismiss the core federal claims, allowing the case to proceed.

A trial is currently scheduled for October 2026.

    Major structural changes could come

Taken together, these lawsuits represent the most significant antitrust enforcement push against major technology firms in the US in decades. They signal a fundamental re-examination of how competition laws apply to fast-evolving digital platforms and ecosystems.

The outcomes could potentially lead to major structural changes. These changes could include the forced breakup of companies such as Meta, or significant behavioural remedies restricting how these firms operate.

Regardless of the specific results, the decisions in these cases will likely set crucial legal precedents. In turn, these will profoundly shape the future competitive landscape for technology. They will also likely influence regulation globally, and impact innovation and investment across the digital economy.

What the cases do not reflect is the change in independence of regulatory bodies in the US, where consistency with White House policy is now paramount. The outcomes will surely test the relationship between Trump and the “tech bros” who’ve, quite literally, been at his side recently.

  • MIL-OSI USA News: Fact Sheet: President Donald J. Trump Creates New Federal Employee Category to Enhance Accountability

    Source: The White House

RESTORING ACCOUNTABILITY TO THE FEDERAL WORKFORCE: Today, President Donald J. Trump’s Office of Personnel Management (OPM) took action to implement President Trump’s Executive Action titled “Restoring Accountability to Policy-Influencing Positions Within the Federal Workforce.”

    • OPM proposed a rule to amend the civil service regulations to include Schedule Policy/Career for career employees with important policy-determining, policy-making, policy-advocating, or confidential duties.
      • These employees will serve as at-will employees, without access to cumbersome adverse action procedures or appeals, overturning Biden Administration regulations that protected poor performing employees.
      • Line federal employees who implement those policies, like Border Patrol agents or wage and hour inspectors, will generally be excluded.
    • This rule empowers federal agencies to swiftly remove employees in policy-influencing roles for poor performance, misconduct, corruption, or subversion of Presidential directives, without lengthy procedural hurdles.
    • Schedule Policy/Career positions remain career positions, filled through existing nonpartisan, merit-based hiring processes.
      • These employees will keep their competitive status and are not required to personally or politically support the President, but must faithfully implement the law and the administration’s policies.
    • OPM estimates 50,000 positions will ultimately be moved into Schedule Policy/Career, approximately 2% of the Federal workforce.
      • The proposed rule does not directly move positions into Schedule Policy/Career. That will be done by a subsequent executive order after a final rule issues.

FIXING A BROKEN SYSTEM: The proposed rule tackles systemic issues in federal workforce accountability, addressing unaccountable, policy-determining federal employees who put their own interests ahead of the American people’s.

    • Federal employees report their agencies do not hold employees accountable:
      • The Merit Principles Survey shows less than a quarter of federal employees believe their agencies address poor performers effectively.
      • When asked what typically happens to poor performers in their work unit, federal employees’ most common response is they “remain in the work unit and continue to underperform.”
    • This happens because the process for removing federal employees is lengthy and difficult:
      • The Government Accountability Office reports it takes 6 months to a year to remove poor performers, even before appeals.
      • Only two-fifths of federal managers are confident they could remove employees who committed serious misconduct.
      • Just one-quarter believe they could remove an employee for poor performance in a critical element of their job.
    • Unaccountability allows corruption to fester in agencies:
      • For example, a recent audit of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) found widespread misconduct by senior leaders, such as male supervisors pressuring female subordinates for sexual favors in exchange for career assistance.
      • The FDIC almost never seriously disciplined employees for such corrupt behavior. Not a single complaint to the agency’s Anti-Harassment program resulted in a removal, or even a demotion.
      • The auditors found the FDIC tolerated misconduct because the removal process was too difficult to use.
    • Some bureaucrats also use the protections the system gives them to oppose presidential policies and impose their own preferences:
      • Recent polling asked senior federal employees in Washington, D.C., what they would do if the President gave them a lawful order they considered bad policy. A plurality said they would ignore the order and do what they thought best.
      • During the first Trump administration career attorneys in the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division would not assist in litigation charging Yale University with racially discriminating against Asian and Caucasian  applicants.
      • In the President’s first term, career employees in the Department of Education would not constructively assist in drafting major rules like the Title IX rules.
      • An Equal Employment Opportunity Commission administrative judge (AJ) recently sent an agency-wide email stating that the agency’s Acting Chair (who was appointed by President Trump) was “not fit to be our chair much less hold a license to practice law” and that the AJ would not implement President Trump’s Executive Orders.
    • Unaccountable bureaucracy undermines democracy. For the government to be accountable to the American people, elected officials must be able to hold policy-determining and policy-making career employees accountable for their performance and conduct.

DRAINING THE SWAMP: President Trump is delivering on his promise to dismantle the deep state and reclaim our government from Washington corruption.

    • In his first term, President Trump signed an Executive Order to reclassify certain federal workers in policy-related roles as “Schedule F” employees, enabling swift accountability for those in influential positions.
    • When President Biden took office, he revoked this Executive Order, reinstating protections that shielded unaccountable bureaucrats.

President Trump vowed on the campaign trail to reinstate this Executive Order, a promise he kept on his first day returning to office.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Government takes steps to ensure affordable Domestic Natural Gas to CNG (Transport) and PNG (Domestic) Segments under CGD Sector

    Source: Government of India

Posted On: 18 APR 2025 5:10PM by PIB Delhi

The Government has introduced key policy measures aimed at strengthening the allocation framework for domestic natural gas, in alignment with its vision of promoting cleaner energy access, enhancing urban air quality, and bolstering domestic energy security.

With a focus on ensuring the sustained availability and affordability of natural gas for key public-facing segments—Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) used in transport and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) used in domestic households for cooking—the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has introduced the following important enhancements to the Domestic Gas Allocation Policy:

    1. Advance Quarterly Allocation:

    • From Q1 FY 2025-26, domestic natural gas allocations for CNG (T) and PNG (D) segments will be done on a two-quarter advance basis.
    • Allocation will also now include New Well Gas (NWG) from nomination fields of ONGC and OIL.
    • Estimations by GAIL and ONGC will help ensure supply visibility to CGD entities in advance, enhancing planning and delivery efficiency.

    2. NWG Allocation on Pro-Rata Basis:

    • Auction-based allocation for NWG has been replaced with a quarterly pro-rata allocation to ensure timely and reliable supply.
    • GAIL will allocate NWG to CGD entities in proportion to their requirements, in accordance with prevailing MoPNG guidelines.

    3. Allocation Ratios maintained:

    • Despite increasing demand in the CGD sector, allocation ratios of domestic gas have broadly been maintained:
      • Q3 2024–25: 54.68% of projected demand allocated
      • Q1 2025–26: 55.68% allocation
      • Q2 2025–26 (Projected): 54.74% allocation
    • Broad trajectory in domestic gas allocation reflects the Government’s commitment to prioritize public-facing segments like transport and domestic cooking.

    4. Pricing Linked to Indian Crude Basket:

    • As both APM gas and New Well Gas prices are linked to Indian Crude Basket prices, calculated monthly, with the recent decline in crude prices, this allocation of domestic gas would make natural gas more affordable for CNG (T) and PNG (D) consumers.

These strategic measures by the Government will lead to enhanced ability of CGD entities to forecast demand and manage supply efficiently, improved supply predictability and better affordability for CGD companies due to crude-linked pricing. These measures will ensure a stable, affordable, and transparent domestic gas supply system for the critical transport and domestic segments under the CGD network, benefitting millions of urban and semi-urban consumers across India.

Headline: Microsoft’s Secure by Design marks a year of success

Cybersecurity is one of the top risks facing businesses. Organizations are struggling to navigate the ever-evolving cyberthreat landscape in which 600 million identity attacks are carried out daily.1 The median time for a cyberattacker to access private data from phishing is 1 hour and 12 minutes, and nation-state cyberattacks are on the rise.2 Organizations also face unprecedented complexity, making security jobs harder—57% of organizations are using more than 40 security tools, which requires significant resourcing and effort to integrate workflows and data.3 These challenges are magnified by the global security talent shortage organizations are facing and there are more than 4 million security jobs unfilled worldwide, rising insider risks, and the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape today.4 These cybersecurity challenges can not only increase significant business disruptions, they can also create devastating economic damages—the cost of cybercrime is expected to grow at 15% year over year, reaching $15.6 trillion by 2029.5

Get the latest Secure Future Initiative updates

In November 2023, to address the evolution of the digital and regulatory landscape, and the unprecedented changes in the cyberthreat landscape, we announced the Microsoft Secure Future Initiative. The Secure Future Initiative (SFI) is a multiyear effort to revolutionize the way we design, build, test, and operate our products and services, to achieve the highest security standards. SFI is our commitment to improve Microsoft’s security posture, thereby improving the security posture of all our customers, and to work with governments and industry to improve the security posture of the entire ecosystem.

Last year, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), through its “Secure by Design” pledge, called on the technology industry to prioritize security at every stage of product development and deployment. This approach of embedding cybersecurity in digital delivery from the outset is also reflected in the United Kingdom’s Government’s Cyber Security Strategy as well as in the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC)’s “Essential Eight” mitigation strategies to protect against cyberthreats. Throughout this blog post, the term “Secure by Design” encompasses both “secure by design” and “secure by default.”

Read CISA’s Secure by Design pledge

Microsoft committed to work towards key goals across a spectrum of Secure by Design principles advocated by numerous government agencies around the world. These goals aim to enhance security outcomes for customers by embedding robust cybersecurity practices throughout the product lifecycle. We continue to take our learnings, feed them back into our security standards, and operationalize these learnings as paved paths that can enable secure design and operations at scale. Our SFI updates provide examples of Microsoft’s progress in implementing secure by design, secure by default, and secure in operations principles, and provide best practices based on Microsoft’s own experience, demonstrating our dedication to improving security for customers.

Keep reading to learn about the initiatives Microsoft has undertaken over the past 18 months to support secure by design objectives as part of our SFI initiative. It is organized around our SFI principles to provide our customers and partners with an understanding of the robust security measures we are implementing to safeguard their digital environments.

Enhancing security with multifactor authentication and default password management

Phishing-resistant multifactor authentication provides the most robust defense against password-based cyberattacks, including credential stuffing and password theft. This includes promoting multifactor authentication among customers, implementing it as a default requirement for access, and participating in efforts to establish long-term standards in authentication.

In October 2024, Microsoft implemented mandatory multifactor authentication for the Microsoft Azure portal, Microsoft Entra admin center, and Microsoft Intune admin center. Since then, Microsoft has worked with our customers to reduce extensions and rapidly advance multifactor authentication adoption. A key achievement is our progress in eliminating passwords across products. Microsoft has introduced enhancements to streamline authentication and improve sign-in experiences, emphasizing usability and security. Users can now remove passwords from their accounts and use passkeys instead, addressing vulnerabilities and preventing unauthorized access.

On March 26, 2025, Microsoft launched a new sign-in experience for more than 1 billion users. By the end of April 2025, most Microsoft account users will see updated sign-in and sign-up user experience flows for web and mobile apps. This new user experience is optimized for a passwordless and passkey-first experience. Microsoft is also updating the account sign-in logic to make passkey the default sign-in choice whenever possible.

Additional examples of Microsoft improving authentication and how customers can learn from Microsoft’s approach and solutions include:

    • Microsoft recommendations for organizations to get started deploying phishing-resistant passwordless authentication using Microsoft Entra ID.
    • Security defaults make it easier to help protect against identity-related cyberattacks like password spray, replay, and phishing common in today’s environments. Learn more about preconfigured security settings available in Microsoft Entra ID.
    • Microsoft’s Conditional Access uses identity-driven signals as part of access control decisions.
    • To help prevent phishing, Microsoft added additional hardening to Windows Hello, which is the multifactor authentication solution built-in to Windows. Windows Hello has also been extended to support passkeys, which are an industry standard, and which we continue to evolve. With Hello and passkeys, on Windows, it means much of the web can be protected with multifactor authentication, and people no longer need to choose between a simple sign-in and a safe sign-in.
    • Learn how Microsoft is advancing decentralized identity standards and verifiable credentials.
    • Following GitHub’s April 2024 update on a year of progress in pushing multifactor authentication adoption, further cohorts requiring multifactor authentication enablement have been rolled out in the past year. This effort continues to drive multifactor authentication utilization with almost 50% of contributing GitHub users having multifactor authentication enabled. Of those, more than 38% of users have two or more methods of two-factor authentication enabled and more than 3.6 million users have a passkey enabled on their account. Additionally, GitHub has pushed for best practices in multifactor authentication methods, and in November 2024 shipped enhancements to the management of multifactor authentication settings for organizations and enterprises that allow the restriction of insecure methods of multifactor authentication such as text messaging.

    Reducing entire classes of vulnerabilities

Most exploited vulnerabilities today stem from types that can often be mitigated on a large scale, such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and memory safety language vulnerabilities. Governments aim to reduce these by encouraging companies to adopt practices like eliminating authorization validation logic mistakes, enabling the use of memory-safe languages, creating secure firmware architectures, and implementing secure administrative protections. The goal is to minimize exploitation risks by addressing systemic vulnerabilities at their root.

Our introduction of mandatory use of the Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL) across all Microsoft applications helps ensure that advanced identity defenses, such as token binding, continuous access evaluation, and advanced application attack detections, are consistently implemented. This standardizes secure authentication processes, making it significantly harder for attackers to exploit identity-related vulnerabilities. MSAL enables developers to acquire security tokens from the Microsoft identity platform to authenticate users and access secured web APIs.

Read the updated Windows Security book and stay secure with Windows

Microsoft is also committed to adopting memory-safe languages, such as Rust, for developing new products and transitioning existing ones. This approach addresses common vulnerabilities related to memory safety. Microsoft is investing heavily into safe language to enhance the safety of our code, and we are applying this new approach to our security platform and other key areas like Microsoft Surface and Pluton security firmware.

In Windows 11, we’ve applied a secure by design strategy from the very first line of code. We have established a Hardware Security Baseline, which helps to ensure every Windows 11 PC has consistent hardware security forming a secure foundation. Windows 11 has secure by default settings and stronger controls for what apps and drivers are allowed to run. This is important as unverified apps and drivers lead to malware and script attacks. And most malware and ransomware apps are unsigned, which means they can be authored and distributed without being provably safe. For consumers and smaller organizations, Smart App Control is a new feature that uses cloud AI to enable millions of known safe apps to run, regardless of where you got them. For larger organizations, IT admins can layer on App Control for Business policies and deploy them using Intune.

With Windows powering business critical solutions across a wide variety of customers, we are committed to helping ensure that Windows remains the most secure and reliable platform. At Microsoft Ignite in 2024, we announced the Windows Resilience Initiative focused on enhancing the security and resilience of the Windows operating system. This involves implementing advanced security features, improving threat detection and response capabilities, and to help ensure that Windows can withstand and recover from cyberattacks. As part of the Windows Resilience Initiative, we are working to protect against common cyberattacks in addition to strengthening identity protection mentioned above.

As part of this we are addressing the long-standing challenge of overprivileged users and applications, which create significant risk. Yet many people do not want to give up admin control of their PC. To help strike the balance of admin privileges and security we are introducing Administrator protection (currently in Windows Insiders). Admin protection gives you the protection of standard user permissions by default, and when needed you can securely authorize a just-in-time system change using Windows Hello. Once the process has completed, the temporary admin token is destroyed. This means admin privileges do not persist.  Admin protection will be disruptive to cyberattackers, as they no longer have elevated privileges by default, which will help organizations ensure they remain in control of Windows.

We are also collaborating with endpoint security partners to adopt safe deployment practices. This means all security product updates will be gradual, minimizing deployment risks and monitoring to help ensure any negative impact is kept to a minimum. Additionally, we are developing new Windows capabilities that allow security product developers to build their products outside of kernel mode, reducing the impact to Windows in the event of a security product crash.

Another key development is our secure by design user experience (UX) toolkit. Human error causes the majority of security breaches. The UX toolkit helps build more secure software and improve user security experiences. This toolkit represents a new way of thinking—where design and security aren’t siloed but are working together from the very beginning. Adopted internally and shared externally, the toolkit helps other software organizations in enhancing their security practices.

Other activities Microsoft has worked on to eliminate classes of vulnerabilities include:

    • Continued support to enable developers to use the memory safe language Rust on Windows.
    • Taking steps to mitigate Windows NT LAN (NTLM) Relay Attacks by default against Exchange Service, Active Directory Certificate Services and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP).
    • Zero Trust Domain Name System (DNS) preview expanded to include Windows 11 enterprise customers. This feature helps lock down devices to only access-approved network destinations.
    • Surface embedded firmware products use of a common firmware architecture.
    • Launch of the Windows 365 Link, which is the first Cloud PC device for Windows 365. Windows 365 Link eliminates local data and apps and has no local admin users and provides employees a way to more securely stream their Windows 365 Cloud PC.
    • GitHub released CodeQL support for GitHub Actions workflow files. This new static analysis capability identifies common continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) flaws both in existing code bases and before they are introduced to help eliminate this class of vulnerabilities. Using this new feature, the GitHub Security Lab was able to help secure more than 75 GitHub Actions workflows in open source projects, disclosing more than 90 different vulnerabilities.

    Boosting patch application rates

Timely and effective patch management is necessary for cybersecurity, as this is how we can reduce the window of opportunity for malicious actors to exploit software flaws.

Microsoft has made measurable increases in the installation of security patches, which we achieved by enabling automatic installation of software patches when possible and enabling this functionality by default, as well as by offering widespread support for these patches.

Microsoft continues to roll out major security updates on the second Tuesday of each month, known as Patch Tuesday. This regular schedule ensures that all systems receive timely updates to address critical vulnerabilities, thereby reducing the risk of exploitation by cyberattackers.

Building on this foundation, Microsoft has made significant strides in improving the update process with Windows 11. By reducing the number of required system restarts from 12 to four per year through the use of Hotpatch updates, we have further streamlined operations and encouraged organizations to remain compliant with patching requirements.

Other examples of our efforts in to boost patch and security update rates include:

    • Windows Hotpatch: Announced at Microsoft Ignite 2024, this provides a 60% reduction in time to adopt security updates, assisted by applying updates seamlessly without system restarts.
    • Microsoft has emphasized the importance of clearly communicating the expected lifespan of products at the time of sale and investing in provisioning capabilities to ease customer transitions to supported versions when products reach the end of their lifecycle. This strategy ensures that customers are well-informed and can smoothly adapt to new technologies.

Adopting a Vulnerability Disclosure Policy (VDP) and Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE)

Coordinated vulnerability disclosure, a practice Microsoft adopted more than a decade ago, benefits both security researchers and software manufacturers by enabling collaboration to enhance product security. A VDP that authorizes public testing of products, commits to refraining from legal action against those who follow the VDP in good faith, provides a clear channel for reporting vulnerabilities, and permits public disclosure of vulnerabilities according to coordinated vulnerability disclosure best practices and international standards makes a real difference for cybersecurity. Additionally, manufacturers can demonstrate transparency by including accurate Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) and Common Platform Enumeration (CPE) fields in every CVE record for the manufacturer’s products.

Our adoption of the CWE and CPE standards in every CVE record for its products is an important achievement. This transparency facilitates accurate and detailed information about vulnerabilities, facilitating timely and effective remediation. By issuing CVEs promptly for all critical or high-impact vulnerabilities, Microsoft demonstrates its commitment to maintaining a secure environment and protecting its customers from potential cyberthreats.

Another notable highlight is the publication of a machine-readable CSAF files, which provide a clear channel for reporting vulnerabilities and authorizes public testing of Microsoft products. This fosters collaboration between security researchers and software manufacturers, enabling the identification and mitigation of vulnerabilities in a coordinated manner.

Other activities Microsoft has worked on to adopt VDP and CVE include:

Empowering customers to detect and document intrusions

Organizations should do more to detect cybersecurity incidents and understand their impact. To ensure they can do that, manufacturers should provide artifacts and evidence-gathering tools, like audit logs.

An example of Microsoft’s commitment in this area is our implementation of robust sensors and logs, enhancing detection of cyberthreats. This initiative provides customers with actionable insights into potential intrusions, enabling swift responses and risk mitigation.

Other activities Microsoft has worked on to empower customers to detect and document inclusions include:

    • Microsoft Purview has expanded its audit logging and retention periods, among other security enhancements, to increase security visibility and incident response capabilities for cloud-based services.
    • Microsoft Security Copilot offers prebuilt promptbooks to automate security-related tasks, such as incident investigations, user analysis, and threat intelligence assessments, enhancing efficiency and accuracy in cybersecurity operations.
    • Microsoft has provided detailed guidance on implementing the United States Department of Defense (DoD) Zero Trust Strategy, with activities categorized into target and advanced phases to achieve full Zero Trust adoption by 2032.
    • Microsoft’s Expanded Cloud Logs Implementation Playbook provides detailed guidance on operationalizing new logging capabilities in Microsoft Purview Audit (Standard).
    • Microsoft has published a whitepaper on lessons learned from red teaming more than 100 generative AI products at Microsoft. The whitepaper highlights the importance of understanding AI systems, breaking them without computing gradients, and the necessity of human involvement in AI red teaming, among other topics.

GitHub shipped enhanced capabilities to the GitHub audit log to provide customers with increased visibility of API events and features to enable enterprise management, automation, and integration.

Headline: Podcast: Former US Chief Data Scientist on using AI to move fast and fix things

MOLLY WOOD: Today we’re talking with DJ Patil. DJ isn’t just one of the foremost data scientists in the world. He’s literally the co-inventor of the term “data scientist.” After serving as project leader for the Threat Anticipation Project at the Department of Defense, Patil was tapped to be the United States’ first Chief Data Scientist in 2015. He oversaw data-driven initiatives like the Cancer Moonshot. Currently a general partner at Great Point Ventures, he has also held key roles at LinkedIn, Skype, eBay, and PayPal. We were excited to ask Patil for his insights on technological transformation in large organizations, AI’s potential to unleash the power of data, and how the technology can be brought to bear on the world’s thorniest problems. And now my conversation with DJ. Thanks so much for being here.

DJ PATIL: Thanks. Glad to be here.

MOLLY WOOD: This season, we’ve been hearing repeatedly that curiosity is becoming one of the most essential traits in the age of AI. You have been a strong advocate for fostering a mindset of curiosity, especially among leaders. Why do you think being curious matters so much right now?

DJ PATIL: Curiosity to me is the most important thing. Now, people are talking about neuroplasticity, all these different terms that are out there. Fundamentally, I think the way we should think about it is curiosity, passion for learning, passion for understanding, trying things. And with AI, you’ve got this thing, it’s really, in many ways, it’s a chatbot. You’re just like, okay, what do I ask it? What it does is, its ability to go from what is big data, like all this information out there, to big knowledge. You can sort of ask it, you can get curious results out of it, and if you are really a curious person, you can get lost in there for a while, learning and finding creative understanding or ideas that are there.

MOLLY WOOD: So, you have steered ambitious technology organizations in government and enterprise and startups. What are the common pitfalls when it comes to adoption and implementation? I mean, I suspect that curiosity is going to be a part of that too, right? But that’s the key, is how, what do you do when you’re faced with that blank screen?

DJ PATIL: The greatest lesson I’ve ever learned starts with listening. Curiosity isn’t about pontificating. It’s not about just trying to go out there and do stuff. It’s about learning. It’s about listening. Every job that I’ve been thrown into—it’s very rare that I’ve gotten myself into a job where I actually understand what I’m doing, to be very frank. How do you actually help people with government? It starts by listening to people and trying to understand what their needs are. And then you ask, what can technology do for them? And it’s kind of two directions that you come from, which is the raw science, the raw intellectual research kind of innovations, but then you have to ask, well, what does the instantiation of it need to look like to actually help people? Can I share a story actually about this from the White House?

MOLLY WOOD: Always, always share stories from the White House.

DJ PATIL: So I’ll tell you, one of the times I got to see the president really, really unhappy with me was when we went into the Oval Office to talk about the Precision Medicine Initiative. It’s the largest database of genomic information, healthcare information, all of this stuff. And so one of the things he was very emphatic on was, you have to do this with the people. I said, well, sir, met with this group that represents this rare disease, represents this group, this cancer, this type of thing. He’s like, I thought I was clear. You can’t do this through proxies of groups or other things. And so, you know, he asked like, what have you done to make sure we know what different communities are thinking about? And then that’s the moment you know your day is not going to go well, because everyone else in the room, in the Oval, everyone else is like just sitting there, very quiet, very stoic. But they’re all thinking like, ooh…

MOLLY WOOD: DJ’s in trouble… [Laughter

DJ PATIL: Like, let’s see where this goes. And he pointed out, he’s like, I thought I was clear. You have to sit down with the people. And so we went out on the road and we met people in communities that we weren’t members of. And I remember being in Pittsburgh and we were in this town meeting with a bunch of people from different parts of the community. And this one elderly woman was in the back corner and she just said, do you really want to hear from me? And she just lit us up. She’s like, have you thought about this, this, this, this? And I remember walking out of the meeting, that was tough. And I was like, can we hire her? Like, she clearly understands a problem in a way we don’t, and we’re never going to understand her completely. We need to just find a way to build with her. We can’t build for her. We have to build with her on these things. And that’s one of the seminal challenges that I think we’ve had. You have to really build it with people to understand how to actually solve concrete problems. People ask, how do we use AI better? And if I had to tell people one thing, go sit with your people you’re going to be impacting. That could be an internal tool, could be an external service, could be, you know, something else. One of the framings that I’ve found really helpful that I like to use is, I like to say, technology is neither radical nor revolutionary unless it benefits every single person.

MOLLY WOOD: Let’s put that anecdote actually in the language of data. Like, you’re a company, right? You have data, you have data scientists. You maybe have silos in your data. You maybe have a mess of it because you’ve just collected everything in the hopes that AI was going to come along. What is the role of the data scientist in this moment? How has it changed?

DJ PATIL: So I’ll tell you the first thing that has not changed. You’ve got this data that’s broken up in silos all over the place, unstructured, messy, it’s a disaster. And then somebody says, make AI happen. And you’re just like, ta-da, and everyone’s like, well, the AI will just fix it. And you’re seeing this happen at scale where people are just trying to deploy AI and say magic will happen. It doesn’t work that way. The amount of time and energy that goes into building the foundation to allow you to use data effectively, the data scientist is one of the core advocates for what needs to happen there. Data scientists spend 80 percent of their time cleaning data. Doing stupid, boring problems—yucky stuff. What we’re still seeing is all that time and energy doesn’t actually go into being able to do the higher-order functions—the insights, the curiosity. The way the job is changing, and some of the things that I’m really excited about, is you get to use this partner of this AI system, this large language model, to say, well, what are other interesting questions I might want to ask? Then there’s this other side of this, which is to know when to ignore the data. You know, you can be so data-driven that your data’s stupid. That’s a real issue. And so the way to do that is create a hypothesis. You create that hypothesis and then you try to figure out how do you make it testable as a business. And one of the things that’s happened, there’s shocks all the time to businesses, economic situations happen. Natural disasters happen. That’s in a natural experiment. The question is, what do you learn from it? And if you’ve instrumented the data and you’ve got the data in the right place, now you can find interesting insights because of that. And then part of that is then really spending time in that community to get context. And the best data science stories are ones always where the data scientist is tethered tightly with domain experts or is in the field. This could be data scientists working in a city to help the fire department. And this is the same thing that I try to do in the companies that I work with, is embed the technologists, embed the data scientists directly with the people who are on the proverbial front lines, so that then we make it a we problem, not an I problem.

MOLLY WOOD: Much like you do not want to silo your data, you don’t want to create an AI team. You don’t want to create a pilot that no one sees except for a tiny group of people in an organization.

DJ PATIL: That’s right. The biggest mistake that we see is people treat data and data science as a throw-it-over-the-fence approach. You’re like, look, we got a question. Throw it in there, just like it was some—it’s like, instead of typing it into the LLM, you kind of hand it to some data scientist to go work on. That doesn’t work. You have to be deeply embedded and curious with them to—like at LinkedIn, one of the cultural tenets that we created, and I’ve done this ever since, is we just created a data meeting. No decisions were ever made. You’re there to just ask questions and just try to understand. Somebody might say, well, I see the data this way. Somebody else says, I see the data this way. If you have a decision at that, politics come in. Here, you have the ability to now ask and sort of just get smarter. The goal is to level everybody up. That’s the fundamental goal. And there’s a version of this that happens in the White House. They aren’t decisional meetings. They’re informative information meetings, and there’s an informational memo that goes out. It’s not a decisional. And because the people who need to do the decision—they may be coming from other places, they may be coming from other parts of government or the business. And so there’s a different meeting for that.

MOLLY WOOD: I mean, I don’t understand how I’ve spent, uh, an undisclosed number of years on this planet and never worked at an organization that has meetings just for information as opposed to decision, and delineates them that way. Like, that all by itself feels like a huge unlock. And then go back to your thought partner, whoever it is, the decision maker or your LLM and say like, okay, here’s all the data that I have, what are some possible decision trees?

DJ PATIL: That’s right. And the number of times where I have personally been in a meeting where, as the data person, have advocated, we should do something that the data doesn’t suggest, is because we’re human learning machines. Then we process that data and we turn it into output. And so we have this idea and frames, gestalts in our mind. What we then have to do is, how do we take new data and update our priors or our way of thinking about it? And that’s an experimental, but because of that, sometimes we have to say, look, the strategic thing can’t be captured in data. But it’s the right thing to do. Maybe it’s a moral thing, maybe it’s an ethical thing, all these other things. But then, and this is why like one of my mentors, the late Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, we had the first memo on this for autonomous weapon systems and AI, [and it] w,as humans have to be in the loop because judgment has to happen. The information may say, do this, but you as a human say, you know what? That’s a catastrophic line that we should not cross. We should not do this. And, you know, we’ve made famous movies about this of, like, where somebody’s single judgment is what saves the day.

MOLLY WOOD: So now you are a partner at a venture capital firm. You live in the future in many ways, right? Because you see the newest and best thinking, and I would imagine you are seeing companies that are what we like to call AI-native, that are, you know, creating and forming themselves and thinking about their futures in totally different ways. Are there through-lines that you’re starting to see?

DJ PATIL: Yeah, so this is why I call things actually AI native is because, you know, I grew up in a world pre-desktop native, pre-laptop native. And so I would call myself even mobile fluent, you know, like, because the people who are truly mobile native were the people who grew up with phones in college. And so now we’re in a moment where we have this interesting group of population that are really in their freshman, sophomore year of college, I would argue. They’re the ones who are going to be AI native. So AI native is coming. It’s not even here yet. The rest of us are going to be AI fluent. What is starting to show up is a question of, what does an AI-native company look like? What does an AI-fluent company look like? And what is something that just doesn’t understand that it doesn’t need to exist or it doesn’t have the ability to pivot into what it looks like in an AI world? And I would make this a broader statement that is not just about companies, this is about society as well. We think about society like recessions. Do we have a soft landing? Do we have a hard landing? As humans, we’re really bad at two things: We’re bad at exponentials, as we saw with COVID and other things, we’re really bad at understanding exponentials. And we’re really bad at transitions. Well, AI is on an exponential trajectory, and it’s on a rapid transformational arc. So are we going to have a hard landing or a soft landing for society, companies, and all those things? And there’s one hat, which is as an investor, you’re looking at it as, what are the next things that are going to be the disruptive replacements and opportunities to make the world happen? There’s another portion which says, how do we also make sure that there are technologies, companies that aid in this transition and have an opportunity to do things.

MOLLY WOOD: We’re talking about AI-native companies now, but we don’t even have full implementation of agentic AI. There’s yet another revolution potentially on the table, and I wonder how you think about the adoption of that, the integration of that. Can you even call yourself AI native if AI itself is going to potentially dramatically change in another month?

DJ PATIL: Maybe this is the one way I think about it right now. Last calendar year was really spending pennies on AI. If you look at enterprise adoption, true enterprise adoption, it’s still very early. So last year we went from paying pennies; this year we’re kind of shifting to saving pennies. Maybe we’ll get to nickels by mid this year, maybe towards the end of the year, and really hopeful it’ll be in quarters. 2026, 2027 is when we shift to seeing potentially dollars on the balance sheet for those that do it well. And so that’s the way I think of this in the arc. The technology will transform radically. The one way to think of this is, in a typical year for a company, you might get one big product release. You know, they have the big announcement, there’s like one big thing. In startups, maybe you’ll get three product releases in a year. In AI, we’re at 10 iterations of technology releases in a year that are shifts. Could be model size, could be applications, could be stuff like, how does it work with agentic, all those things. We’re on an exponential arc of how to think about the iteration of that tech. And the cultural transformation is operating at a 1x speed. And so the place where I tell people, if you want the leverage, what is going to give you the leverage? It’s not technology. It’s culture, it’s people. It’s helping people know how to use this technology to be more adept. And I got to see this firsthand, at some of the slowest places ever—I was working in national security when Colin Powell was at the State Department, and he gave a memo that said everyone should have a desktop computer. That sounds like crazy now, right? But everyone’s like, oh, the costs, the costs are going to be insane. And like, what are we going to, can we trust people with these computers? And what happens if they take—you know, there was all these questions, and then now you think about it, you’re like, how did you do your work? That was a cultural transformative moment. Those are the versions that we’re going to need to see. It’s like, what does it mean to train people? What does it mean to give access to these technologies? How do we put the safeguards in them to help people make sure they don’t do something that’s going to be potentially harmful to themselves or to the company or the organization.

MOLLY WOOD: On that note, I think, I mean, there’s a tendency, as you are well aware, in tech to move fast and break things. I believe you have an alternate phrase.

DJ PATIL: We do, it’s from a book that we wrote on data and ethics, AI and ethics. This adage needs to be, move quickly and fix things. And what I think is, and why it resonates with people, is there are types of people out there who run into burning fires—firefighters, first responders, all these. There’s a form of technologist out there that’s a first responder, and they’re eager and excited to actually figure out how to use their skills to help improve situations for everybody. And that doesn’t mean it has to just be a nonprofit or something like that. It’s, how do we be intentional? How do we be thoughtful about what we’re trying to actually do, and actually make sure what we’re building is really what our intention is. I don’t want to make it seem like, you know, someone would say, oh, DJ’s brakes, like, we gotta go all gas, gas, gas, gas versus brakes. I’m very much about gas, but I think it’s a question of like, how can we do it? Because I’ve spent a lot of time with parents of children with rare diseases and kids with rare diseases, and I know there is no time. We cannot be wasting any time for those families with data silos, some of the data protections that are incredibly thoughtful, well-intentioned, but it doesn’t matter for that kid whose life expectancy is so short and could be extended, if not saved. And so, where do we find the right balance of that is being intentional about what problem we’re trying to solve.

MOLLY WOOD:  I tell my son all the time, actually about driving, that there is a way to move with haste and not carelessness, which I think is part of what you’re saying. And related to that, we are in a moment of extreme uncertainty. We do not know what’s going to happen. We have these tools that some people say are contributing to that uncertainty. Other people say these tools can help us navigate through it. What do you think is the role of technology in this moment?

DJ PATIL: I am incredibly excited about these technologies from the perspective of how they might be able to help people. I think, for example, one of the things is people have deep curiosity when they have an issue and they’re trying to figure out, you know, something, it might be a medical issue, it might be a social issue, like where’s our peer groups, where are our other systems? And a lot of these systems have atrophied. We need to bring those up, but we also can use technology to support on these fronts. I’ve met plenty of people with terminal diseases who are using LLMs to figure out how to advance their care, because when they talk to the physician or the care team, they’re getting insufficient answers. That’s an easy one that we hear about a lot of times. But I also hear about the people who, you know, are just afraid and anxious going into a job interview. One that I just saw the other day firsthand was my son. He is, you know, doing his interviews for the very first time and he is like, what do I do? And I was like, well, let’s just go construct a set of interview questions. This is something we might buy a book for before. Might be something we might have, you know, done a web search for, or something else. But here we’re able to really go, ah, here’s a set of questions. And then he wrote down his answers and we critiqued it. And so in a short span of time, he got really good. And then the follow-on, and this is the key thing, was don’t just settle there, now do this with a real human. Go talk to your roommate, have your roommate ask you them, see what that response is, see how it marries up, and then flip the script and go through it vice versa. I think that’s where we then use this technology to augment us, rather than just sort of as an intervention or a crutch.

MOLLY WOOD: You introduced a kind of back-of-the-napkin framework it sounds like at the White House that went a little bit viral. Explain that to us.

DJ PATIL: The backstory. Anybody can, if you want the longer version, you can see it on my LinkedIn page of the history of where this came from. But it came during a very tense moment after we’d seen a number of people of color, predominantly Black, who’d been killed in tragic law enforcement situations, along with officers who’d been really hurt in, you know, escalations and other environments. And so we brought people together. It was, what could we do with technology to help in these situations? What could that look like? And so these were a set of principles that I’ve used in building things that are there. And so one of them is you start by prototyping for 1x, building for 10x, and then engineering for 100x. And those X’s are scale. So start with prototyping. Don’t go to the 100x solution right away. Start with something really small, very tangible. See what you can do, and then make it bigger over time. Another one is, you know, how do you plan and work and execute? And so you plan, really the goal is at this—the pithy version of it, to sum it up is ship daily, ship something, everything daily. But you want to plan in years, and planning in years but shipping in days is the key thing. And the final one is, what does it take to double the impact while cutting the timeline in half? And this, for the math nerds out there, they’ve already got it. This is a hack because it no longer puts you on a linear paradigm. It puts you on a log-base-two paradigm, so it starts forcing prioritization exponentially. So only the most important things happen in that way. And when you start thinking about it that way, that’s how you get to solving problems at scale. And that I find is one of the most impactful ways to take something that you’re working small and just make it really big and the best answer for that is, it’s a classic African proverb. If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.

MOLLY WOOD: If your listeners could take away one actionable AI-related insight from you, what would you want it to be?

DJ PATIL: Don’t just live in the AI system. Get out of the AI system and get into the real world. And then use that, use the AI system, to help bridge you into the real world and figure out what it’s like. But don’t just be stuck in front of the screen. Get out there, get with real people, talk to them, understand what’s really going on, and use the AI to help augment that.

MOLLY WOOD: And then what are some surprising ways that you maybe are using some of these tools at work or even in your personal life?

DJ PATIL: If anybody follows me on social media, they know I do a lot of photography, and so one of the things that I do is, actually, I upload my images to the LLM and I ask it to critique it, but I don’t just ask it to critique it. I ask it, say, your judges are these different types of photographers who are historical. I ask them to judge it, and then I ask them to give me suggestions on what I could have done differently on composition or post-processing to improve it. And so it’s kind of acting as this coach. I then take that and I actually do show it to real humans and ask them, like say, okay, this is what I got from the system. What do you think? And they always have some, they’re always like, they give me some additional insight that can’t be fully captured. But I found it to be a really effective, helpful coach in this sort of strange way, and this is like one of those things I was like, I was playing one day and I was just like, I wonder if. And I just did it and I was like, whoa, that was weird. That’s, I didn’t expect that. And so a lot of, I try to spend, carve out a little bit of time for what I would call play and just playing with these things and just trying to do that. And I just want to emphasize, I know that is a statement of privilege that not everyone else has, but finding ways where you can do that a little bit on the edge is something that I would advocate for everyone.

MOLLY WOOD: Fast-forward three to five years, what do you think will be the most profound change in the way we work?

DJ PATIL: We won’t think about AI. We don’t think about, like, what does the mobile team do if you’re inside a company, like, everyone’s doing mobile. We don’t ask like, oh, when we go, you know, we try to do something or interact with something digitally, we don’t go, oh, did you go to the web version on your desktop? Or did you go do the mobile version? It’s just integrated. And so I think a lot of these interfaces, a lot of the products that will show up over the next five years will be ones that will be so naturally embedded that we don’t think of it as the AI system versus the problem that we’re trying to solve. It kind of sits side by side.

MOLLY WOOD: Perfect place to end. DJ Patil, America’s first chief data scientist, and now a general partner at Great Point Ventures. Thank you so much for the conversation.

NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    0700 AM CDT Fri Apr 18 2025

    Valid 181300Z – 191200Z

…THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM PARTS OF THE
SOUTHERN PLAINS INTO THE MID MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AND UPPER GREAT
    LAKES…

    …SUMMARY…
Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible from parts of the
southern Plains northeastward toward the upper Great Lakes, mainly
from late afternoon into early Saturday morning. Large to very large
hail and severe wind gusts should be the main hazards, especially
across the southern Plains where storms will be more concentrated. A
    few tornadoes also appear possible.

…Upper Great Lakes to Mid Mississippi Valley…
Ongoing, mostly elevated thunderstorms aided by persistent low-level
warm/moist advection and steep mid-level lapse rates should continue
to pose a large hail and damaging wind threat as they spread quickly
eastward across southern WI this morning. This activity should
eventually weaken later this morning as it continues moving across
Lower MI into a less unstable environment. Behind this initial
activity, the surface warm sector will attempt to spread northward
across parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes today, as longwave
troughing gradually develops eastward over the northern/central
Plains and Southwest. Given the positive tilt/orientation of this
upper troughing and enhanced southwesterly flow aloft expected to
persist through the period, a strong cold front should make only
    slow southeastward progress.

A cap will likely inhibit surface-based convective development until
peak afternoon heating and frontal forcing can help lift parcels to
their LFC. Given nebulous forcing aloft, there is still a fair
amount of uncertainty regarding overall convective coverage this
afternoon/evening. Even so, any thunderstorms that can develop along
or ahead of the front could pose a threat for severe hail and
damaging winds, with strong deep-layer shear aiding updraft
organization. This severe threat may persist for much of the
evening, and perhaps continuing into the early overnight hours.

    …Southern Plains to the Ozarks…
The southern portion of the cold front is forecast to decelerate and
eventually stall over parts of OK later today. A dryline will extend
southward from a weak frontal low across northwest to west-central
TX by late afternoon. Even with widespread mid/high-level cloudiness
present, robust daytime heating of the moist warm sector is
anticipated across the southern Plains today. The low-level cap
should eventually be breached by late afternoon/early evening
(around 22-00Z), particularly along/near the cold front, and perhaps
the front/dryline intersection as well. Strong southwesterly flow
aloft and related deep-layer shear will likely support organized
    severe convection.

Initial supercell development should pose a threat for large to very
large hail, potentially up to 2-3 inches in diameter. With time,
upscale growth into multiple clusters/short line segments is
expected through the evening into early Saturday morning, as a
south-southwesterly low-level jet gradually strengthens. An increase
in the severe/damaging wind threat is anticipated as this mode
transition occurs. The threat for a few tornadoes remains apparent,
especially across parts of OK along/south of the front, as favorable
low-level shear will be present this evening where supercells may
still exist. Even with a higher concentration of thunderstorms
expected across the southern Plains, the messy convective mode this
evening and tendency for convection to be undercut by the cold front
currently limit confidence in delineating a corridor of greater
    severe hail/wind potential.

Areas affected…portions of Lake Michigan through southern and
    central Lower Michigan

    Concerning…Severe potential…Watch unlikely

    Valid 181436Z – 181630Z

    Probability of Watch Issuance…20 percent

SUMMARY…A continuing risk for severe hail and/or increasing
potential for strong, damaging wind gusts appears low, as a small,
organizing cluster of storms, or its remnants, spreads inland of
Lake Michigan across parts of central/southern Lower Michigan
through midday. A new watch is not anticipated, but trends are
    being monitored.

DISCUSSION…Strongest convection has become focused above the
convectively generated cold pool, within forcing associated with
low-level warm advection, trailing to the southwest of a weakening
MCV now approaching Michigan coastal areas near/north of Muskegon.
Currently moving eastward at speeds of 45-50 kt, the small,
organizing cluster is on track to overspread the Grand Rapids,
Lansing and Flint vicinities of south central Lower Michigan through
    15-17Z.

However, the latest Rapid Refresh suggests that southerly low-level
wind fields and associated forcing for ascent will weaken through
mid to late morning, while warmer and more strongly capping elevated
mixed layer air advects northeastward across the region. So, it
remains uncertain how much longer ongoing activity will be
    maintained.

Furthermore, while an initially cool, dry and stable boundary-layer
across southern into central Lower Michigan is in the process of
gradually warming and moistening ahead of the approaching
convection, the extent to which low-level thermodynamic profiles
become unstable to downdrafts and/or downward mixing of stronger
momentum aloft remains unclear. Currently, potential for a
continuing risk for severe hail and/or an increasing risk for
damaging wind gusts appears low, at least in the near term, but
trends will continue to be monitored.

  • MIL-OSI: Telnyx Applauds Fifth Circuit Ruling in Favor of AT&T

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

Austin, TX, April 18, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Telnyx LLC, a leading provider of real-time communications and connectivity solutions, today applauded Thursday’s opinion from the Fifth Circuit vacating the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) $57 million fine against AT&T. The decision followed the Supreme Court’s ruling in SEC v. Jarkesy, ruling that the FCC’s in-house enforcement actions violate the Seventh Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Telnyx also cited Jarkesy in making the same constitutional argument in its response to the Notice of Apparent Liability (NAL) it received from the FCC in February.

Notably, FCC Commissioner Nathan Simington issued a dissent in the Telnyx enforcement proceeding in which he concluded, with great foresight, that the FCC can no longer pursue enforcement actions involving monetary penalties under Jarkesy.

The Fifth Circuit’s ruling is a significant validation of Telnyx’s position. The court’s opinion mirrors multiple arguments Telnyx raised in its NAL response, including the point that the FCC cannot act as “prosecutor, jury, and judge.”

“This is a landmark victory for Telnyx and the entire telecommunications industry,” said Telnyx CEO David Casem. “The court’s opinion confirms what we’ve long argued—that the FCC’s in-house process for imposing fines, like the one proposed against Telnyx, is patently unconstitutional. Based on this decision, the FCC should immediately rescind the unlawful NAL. The failure to timely respond to the Fifth Circuit’s decision will inevitably lead to more litigation in which Telnyx will undoubtedly prevail.”

The AT&T ruling follows the news earlier this week that the FCC recommended reinstating Telnyx to the Industry Traceback Group (ITG) as a supporting partner.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Seasonal safety tips

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

In summer, keep your dog healthy and happy by walking in the early morning or evening.

    In brief:

    • There are a lot of things to think about during the summer holiday period.
    • It’s important to do what you can to keep yourself, your family and your things safe.
    • This article overviews some actions you can take.

From festive parties to trips away, there are so many things to do and enjoy at this time of year.

Taking a moment to read the following tips will help ensure you can celebrate free of unexpected problems.

    Travel safely

If you’re hitting the road this summer, remember to take plenty of breaks and drive to the conditions.

It’s also a good idea to pack supplies just in case the car you’re travelling in breaks down.

Never leave a child or pet in the car, even with the windows down or for short periods. Car interiors can heat to over 60 degrees in just five minutes.

Protect your home while you’re away

House break-ins often increase over holiday periods, because offenders know an empty house can be an easy target.

Try to leave your house looking lived-in with the help of a neighbour or house-sitter.

Keeping windows and doors locked, your mail collected, and your lawn mown while you are away can help.

Find more tips in ACT Policing’s property crime prevention page.

Take note of public transport changes

Staying in the ACT? It’s worth noting changes to bus and light rail timetables during the summer school holidays – from Monday 23 December 2024 to Sunday 2 February 2025.

School services and ‘s’ trip diversions will not be in place during the six-week holiday period.

Bus and light rail services will be free on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve (from 5pm). There will be a special bus timetable in place. You don’t even need a MyWay+ card – but if you have one, please tap on and off.

If you choose to leave the car at home on New Year’s Eve, you can take advantage of an extended Tuesday timetable with additional bus and light rail services.

And remember, public transport is free on Fridays.

Make your trip even easier by using the MyWay+ app or TC Journey Planner.

Stay up to date with public transport service alerts

Keep your pets safe and well

As the temperature rises, pets rely on their owners to keep them happy, healthy and safe.

There are some easy ways to do this.

    • Avoid walks in heat of the day. Early morning and evening walks are best, and this will also protect their paws from burning.
    • Make sure they have access to fresh drinking water and shade around your house and backyard all day.
    • Help your pets stay cool with an icy pet treat. There are lots of online recipes to make your own pet-safe summer treats.
    • Visit one of the dog swimming spots or fill a kids’ splash pool with water to help your pooch cool down.
    • Arrange for someone to care for your pets if you go on holidays.
    • Make sure your pet is microchipped and registered so if they escape – such as during a storm – they can easily be returned.
    • And remember, never leave your dog in an unattended parked car. Even if you leave the windows down, your dog is still at risk of suffering heat exhaustion within minutes.

Find a dog swimming spot or learn more about recreation with your dog.

    Christmas present safety

There’s nothing like nailing that perfect gift, but some presents – particularly those for kids – need a bit of extra care and supervision.

    • Portable pools: remember, children can drown in portable pools. Always watch them carefully.
    • Button batteries can be deadly if swallowed. Always check the battery compartment is secure on items before buying.
    • Choose age-appropriate toys to help prevent injury and choking.
    • Trampolines: check and maintain your trampoline. Always watch young children as they bounce.
    • Pool toys and floatation aids are for fun, not safety. Stay close and supervise children.
    • eRideables: children should only ride age-appropriate devices. They should wear a helmet and have only one person per device.
    • Always monitor and unplug lithium-ion products once items are charged. This helps avoid fires and injuries.

Take care of your gas bottles

If you’re planning some barbecues this summer, chances are you have a gas bottle around the house.

You can minimise risk by following these simple safety tips.

    • Always ensure adequate ventilation and never use indoors or in confined spaces.
    • Always read the manufacturer’s operating instructions.
    • Do not connect or disconnect cylinders near a naked flame.
    • Do not use LPG in windy conditions.
    • Always keep cylinders cool and away from flames, sparks and heat.
    • Only use approved or certified hoses and connections designed for gas. Never use home-made ones.

  • MIL-OSI USA: United States – Italy Joint Leaders’ Statement

    US Senate News:

    Source: The White House
President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held their first official meeting yesterday in Washington, D.C., where they confirmed their resolve to promote a mutually beneficial relationship and further strengthen the U.S. – Italy strategic alliance across security, economic, and technological issues.
U.S.- Italy Cooperation for SecurityThe U.S. and Italy underscore that the war in Ukraine must end, and fully endorse President Trump’s leadership in brokering a ceasefire and delivering a just and lasting peace.     The U.S. and Italy reiterate the unwavering commitment to NATO and to the principle of developing their collective and individual capacity to contribute to the Alliance’s goals. We therefore commit to ensuring our national security and defense are aligned and funded to meet the challenges of today, and critically, the risks of tomorrow.     Our defense cooperation must rely on a deep and extensive transatlantic supply chain. We are facing a complex security environment, and we are ready to further increase defense equipment and technology cooperation, including co-production and co-development that strengthen U.S. and Italian defense industrial capacity and protect it from foreign adversaries.     The U.S. and Italy reaffirm their shared commitment to counter illegal immigration and to ensure that legal migration is used as a tool to benefit our nations and not to create a security problem for our citizens. We will step up our common efforts to eradicate international organized crime groups engaged in migrant smuggling and human trafficking.     The U.S. and Italy confirm their joint effort to fight the production, distribution, and sale of illicit synthetic drugs, especially synthetic opioids and the criminal networks trafficking these drugs, which collectively damage the health, security, and well-being of our citizens and people around the world.
U.S. – Italy Cooperation for Shared ProsperityThe United States and Italy agree to work to ensure that trade between the United States and Europe is mutually beneficial, fair, and reciprocal.     We highlight the importance of information technology to enabling free enterprise across the Atlantic. We agreed that a non-discriminatory environment in terms of digital services taxation is necessary to enable investments from cutting-edge tech companies.     We welcome American investments in AI computing and cloud services in Italy to maximize the opportunities of digital transformation and support Italy as the key regional data hub for the Mediterranean and North Africa.      Developing a workforce that can deliver on the needs of our economies is vital. The United States and Italy are proud partners in industrial endeavors that will benefit employment in both countries, playing a vital role for each other’s supply chains and strengthening our industrial bases. Italy will contribute to the maritime renaissance of the U.S. shipbuilding sector, while the U.S. will look into the investment opportunities offered by the increasingly positive Italian business environment, including through the incentives granted by the new Single Special Economic Zone (SEZ) established in Italy.     The U.S. and Italy cooperate to strengthen energy security by further encouraging the diversification of Italy’s energy supply source and by increasing exports of U.S. liquefied natural gas to Italy in a mutually beneficial manner.     The U.S. and Italy will work together to develop the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor, one of the greatest economic integration and connectivity projects of this century, connecting partners by ports, railways, and undersea cables and stimulating economic development and integration from India, to the Gulf to Israel, to Italy, and onward to the United States.      Following the example of the President Trump’s successful Abraham Accords approach, the U.S. and Italy will cooperate on crucial infrastructural projects and consider leveraging on the Mattei Plan’s potential.
U.S. – Italy Cooperation for TechnologyThe United States and Italy recognize the need to protect our national critical and sensitive infrastructure and technology, which is why we commit to using only trusted vendors in these networks. There is no higher trust than our strategic alliance, which is why there can be no discrimination when it comes to U.S. and Italian vendors.     We are proud to partner on Space Technology, including through two Mars Missions in 2026 and 2028, and lunar surface exploration on future Artemis missions.     As we transition to and innovate on the technologies of the future, such as 6G, AI, quantum computing, and biotechnology, we also commit to exploring opportunities for enhanced partnerships in these critical industries that protect our data from adversaries that would exploit it.
Invitation to Visit ItalyPresident Trump accepted Prime Minister Meloni’s invitation to pay an official visit to Italy in the very near future. There is also consideration to hold, on such occasion, a meeting between U.S. and Europe.

DUBAI, UAE, April 18, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — With market volatility on the rise, Avenix Fzco has introduced FXSpire, an expert advisor built to enhance forex trading precision and filter out false breakouts. Market volatility presents both opportunities and challenges. In forex trading, one misstep can mean the difference between a smart entry and a costly mistake. That’s why the ability to spot false breakouts has become essential, and why tools like FXSpire, developed by Avenix Fzco, are helping traders better navigate today’s fast-moving markets.

Understanding False Breakouts and Why They Matter

False breakouts happen when price briefly breaks a support or resistance level before reversing course, often luring traders in and flipping direction. These traps can lead to losses and disrupt overall strategy. Identifying and avoiding them is key to staying consistent, especially in uncertain economic conditions.

Why False Breakout Detection Matters in 2025

As global economic uncertainty increases, detecting false breakouts is more crucial than ever. FXSpire’s technology helps traders filter misleading signals, focus on high-probability setups, and strengthen risk management, all essential for capital preservation and long-term profitability.

    Smarter Detection in 2025

With global markets facing heightened unpredictability, distinguishing between real and false signals is more important than ever. FXSpire’s false breakout detection helps traders filter out the noise and zero in on setups that align with momentum, trend, and structure. The result? A more focused strategy with improved decision-making and stronger capital protection.

    How FXSpire Works

FXSpire is an Expert Advisor (EA) for MetaTrader 4, tailored specifically for trading the EURUSD currency pair on the M30 chart. At its core, it combines pattern recognition, including formations like the Three White Soldiers and Three Black Crows, with algorithms designed to catch false breakouts before they turn into real losses.

It’s not just about automation, it’s about precision. By identifying high-probability entries and layering on risk safeguards, FXSpire aims to deliver more control and fewer surprises.

    Core Features

FXSpire’s approach to trading includes a well-rounded toolset:

    • Pattern Recognition Engine: Detects chart formations and filters out false breakouts to highlight better trade opportunities.
    • Risk Protection Tools: Uses trend filters, RSI indicators, trailing stops, and filters for spread/slippage to reduce unwanted exposure.
    • Flexible Position Management: Offers auto-lot sizing, fixed stop-loss and take-profit levels, and supports up to four simultaneous positions.

In 2025’s forex environment, it’s not enough to automate, you need tools that think ahead. FXSpire offers traders a methodical, data-driven way to tackle volatility while keeping risk in check. Prioritizing precision and adaptability, it helps traders stay focused, confident, and in control of their next move.

  • MIL-OSI Global: All models are wrong − a computational modeling expert explains how engineers make them useful

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Zachary del Rosario, Assistant Professor of Engineering, Olin College of Engineering

When engineers design things, they use models to predict how the things will work in the natural world. But all models have limitations. MTStock Studio/E+ via Getty Images

Nicknamed “Galloping Gertie” for its tendency to bend and undulate, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge had just opened to traffic on July 1, 1940. In a now infamous failure, in the face of moderate winds the morning of Nov. 7, 1940, the bridge started to repeatedly twist. After an hour of twisting, the bridge collapsed. One fatal engineering assumption led the bridge to shake itself apart.

At the time, many designers believed that wind could not cause bridges to move up and down. That it actually can may seem like an obvious fact now, but that incorrect assumption cost about US$65 million in today’s dollars and a dog’s life.

Small vertical movements allowed the bridge to twist. Near the end, the bridge twisted in ways the designers had never anticipated. This twisting stressed the bridge until the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed.

By assuming no vertical movement from wind, the engineers didn’t study how parts of the bridge would flutter in the wind before they built the bridge. This oversight ultimately doomed the bridge.

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed in 1940 because its designers assumed it wouldn’t flutter up and down in the wind, but it ended up being slender enough that the wind caused it to move up and down.
University of Washington Libraries Digital Collections

This failure illustrates an idea that many engineering students learn during their coursework: All engineering calculations are based on models. Safe design requires engineers to recognize the assumptions in their models and to ensure the design’s safety despite any limitations.

I am an expert in computational modeling, which I teach at Olin College. In my classes, I talk about models and teach engineers to use them safely.

Learning to use models carefully is important: As the famous statistician George Box said, “All models are wrong – some are useful.”

    Models and their engineering use

Models are interpretive frameworks that help scientists and engineers connect data to the real world. For instance, you likely have an everyday sense for the strength of objects: If you bend a piece of wood with enough force, it will break. A stronger board can take more force.

Engineers have models that make this everyday sense more precise.

Engineering strength depends on an interpretive framework that relates forces, the size of an object and their ratio − which represents mechanical stress. What engineers call “strength” relates to this computed stress.

Considering strength helps engineers select a material that is strong enough to build a bridge.

An interpretive framework − a model − for strength, used in engineering. Force, F, and size or area, A, are used to compute stress, sigma. Sigma is then used to determine strength.
    Jorge Stolfi/Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA

But all models leave out details from the real world. To compute stress, an engineer needs to describe the shape of an object. Real objects are complex, so the engineer simplifies their shape for the sake of computation.

For instance, an engineer may take a complex bundle of wires and assume they act together as a single cylinder. This simplified shape may help them choose how many wires to bundle together and set the overall thickness of the bundle.

However, assumptions introduce limitations: The cylinder simplification assumes the individual wires don’t exist, so it doesn’t help determine how to weave the wires together. Engineers can − and do − make more detailed models where they need to, but even those have assumptions and limitations.

Simplification of a wire rope as an assumed cylinder. This assumption may be appropriate for choosing the number of wires, but it is wholly inappropriate for determining the arrangement of wires.
HaeB/Wikimedia Commons, modified by Zachary del Rosario, CC BY-SA

This interplay between assumptions and limitations is at the heart of all models. Engineers working on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge assumed no wind-driven vertical movement, which led to a limitation: They couldn’t predict the wind-driven flutter that shook the bridge apart.

The same idea holds true for more abstract models. Some companies that make facial recognition systems based on artificial intelligence assume their systems are accurate, given that they do a good job of picking out the correct face from a set of training data. However, outside researchers have shown that some training datasets introduce limitations.

The engineers who built these training datasets assumed their data had enough faces to represent most people, but these datasets underrepresented nonwhite people. This limitation led the systems to disproportionately target Black people.

In pursuit of better AI systems, some researchers assume that more training data is the most effective approach. This data-intensive approach has the limitation of an enormous environmental impact. Computing with large sets of data takes a lot of energy, since data centers are resource-intensive.

The trick to using models safely is to pick assumptions where the limitations do not ruin their intended use. The gold standard is to test. But testing isn’t always possible. For example, building a test bridge isn’t a luxury that structural engineers can afford.

Carefully selecting and creating proper models requires good judgment.

    Teaching modeling

Engineering judgment involves a careful balance of trust and skepticism toward mathematics − the bedrock of many engineering models. Developing engineering judgment is difficult, and it usually emerges from years of experience. I teach a modeling and simulation course that jump-starts students’ engineering judgment.

My co-instructors and I invite students to build their own models, which is a pretty uncommon experience for engineering students. Students then identify the assumptions in their models, state their limitations and, importantly, justify how those limitations do not prevent them from safely using the model.

Example diagram of a model intended for choosing the size of a wire rope. The model is based on the assumption that the rope will be a solid cylinder. This imposes limitations on studying how the wires are woven together, but it doesn’t hinder the model’s intended use.
4300streetcar/Wikimedia Commons, modified by Zachary del Rosario, CC BY-SA

Engineering failures like the Tacoma Narrows Bridge can occur when engineers are not aware of a model’s assumptions and limitations. While courses often teach young engineers to make assumptions and use models, they rarely focus on these models’ limitations. Helping students develop their engineering judgment can prevent failures like “Galloping Gertie” from happening again.

Zachary del Rosario receives funding from the National Science Foundation and Toyota Research Institute.

  • MIL-OSI China: China, Cambodia pledge to implement China-proposed global initiatives

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

PHNOM PENH, April 18 — China and Cambodia on Friday expressed readiness to fully implement the China-proposed Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative.

The commitment was underscored in a joint statement issued when Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up his state visit to Cambodia, where both countries also highlighted their mutual goal of speeding up the building of an all-weather China-Cambodia community with a shared future in the new era.

The two sides underscored their willingness to be frontrunners in the Global Development Initiative and to inject strong impetus into global development, especially the development of the Global South.

To implement the initiative, the two sides agreed to accelerate the advancement of the Industrial Development Corridor plan, leverage the China-Cambodia railway cooperation mechanism to jointly formulate a general plan for Cambodia’s railway network, and speed up the implementation of the Fish and Rice Corridor cooperation plan.

They also agreed to work actively to promote the signing of the upgrade protocol of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area at an early date within this year.

Cambodia supported Hong Kong’s accession to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and welcomed the Global AI Governance Initiative put forward by Xi.

They also agreed to jointly build a secure and stable industrial and supply chain, expand the use of local currencies in bilateral trade and investment, and enhance cooperation in the field of clean energy.

As for the Global Security Initiative, the two sides affirmed their commitment to the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and to resolving differences and disputes between countries through dialogue and consultation in a peaceful manner, so as to make positive contributions to regional and global peace and stability.

China lauded Cambodia’s crackdown on illegal online gambling, and the two sides voiced their willingness to continue to carry out the Year of Law Enforcement Cooperation activities.

China has actively promoted the resolution of international and regional hotspot issues, and Cambodia welcomes China’s important and constructive role in this regard.

The two sides believe that the South China Sea issue should be resolved peacefully by sovereign states directly concerned through friendly consultations and negotiations, and any attempt to use the South China Sea issue to undermine regional peace and mutual trust will be counterproductive.

On the Global Civilization Initiative, they emphasized that both countries are ancient civilizations with long histories.

They jointly advocated for respecting the diversity of world civilizations, promoting the common values of humanity, and contributing to exchanges and mutual learning among human civilizations.

The two sides agreed to designate 2025 the China-Cambodia Year of Tourism and encourage their citizens to travel to each other’s countries.

They also expressed willingness to explore the establishment of China-Cambodia joint working group on cultural heritages to promote comprehensive cooperation in the field.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Freaky Tales: this gory 80s-inspired anthology film is all surface and no substance

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Matthew Melia, Senior Lecturer and Course leader of the Humanities Foundation Degree, Kingston University

Nostalgia for the 1980s has been in vogue since the release of Stranger Things in 2016. The Netflix show brought about a renaissance of interest in the popular culture of the time firmly rooted in nostalgia – video game arcades, the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, horror films and a reverie for the horror of the VHS and video-nasty era.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of this form of nostalgia – if it’s done right. Freaky Tales, an anthology film that deals with 80s’ California punk, anti-fascism, hip-hop and VHS culture, could have been a great addition to this sort of nostalgia bait. Sadly, it is a mess, which, for most of its run time, feels like a film about the 80s generated by AI.

To go on TikTok is to be confronted by a gen-Z army cosplaying a neon-drenched and romanticised version of the 80s. Filters are used to replicate the low-fi aesthetics of VHS tape, super 8 and cinefilm, while the content creators dress in the styles of the decade and espouse a wishful nostalgia for an era they are at least three decades too young to have experienced firsthand. Freaky Tales seems aimed at this market.

But this is how the nostalgia industry (or nostalgia capitalism) works. Contemporary digital media facilitates and creates nostalgia in a way that gives the appearance of authenticity but is mostly all surface. Nostalgia is passed on, remediated and sanitised.

Looking for something good? Cut through the noise with a carefully curated selection of the latest releases, live events and exhibitions, straight to your inbox every fortnight, on Fridays. Sign up here.

It’s worth also noting that it’s always the Hollywood synthy, US version of 80s pop culture that dominates. Few young people have developed a fabricated sense of nostalgia for the dreariness of Thatcher’s Britain, for instance. A period that history academic Lucy Robinson writes was full of “pop culture and politics … that shaped modern Britain,” in her incisive critical assessment Now That’s What I Call A History of the 1980s.

Freaky Tales is comprised of four interlocking stories, which are bound in a way that is hard to really comprehend.

Are the stories connected through the two sets of characters – a couple of young punks and a pair of female hip-hop artists – leaving a screening of The Lost Boys who reappear in different stories? Is it the strange alien green glow that reappears across all the stories? The marker of a solid anthology film is a tight structure and a sense of place, which the film at least has with all stories based in Oakland, California. But for the most part, Freaky Tales feels half built and uncertain of itself.

Buried somewhere though is a better film trying to get out. Take the first story “Strength in Numbers: the Gilman Strikes Back about the denizens of the Gilman punk club in Oakland, taking a violent and gory stand against a band of neo-nazis they are being harassed by.

The sequence ends in a sort of bloody 1980s’ punk version of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (there are also clear references to Walter Hill’s 1979 cult classic The Warriors). Here there was an opportunity to look deeper into the emergence of California punk culture of the era, the Gilman is a place of real cultural significance where the scene fermented and bands like Rancid, The Offspring, Green Day and the East Bay punk scene in the 1990s got a start.

Dead Kennedy’s track Nazi Punks Fuck Off became a rallying cry of 80s anti-fascist punk as did Black Flag’s Rise Above (this is at least included on the film’s soundtrack). So why not look at least a little deeper into the antifascist movement within the US punk movement during the era? It can be done and I’d recommend Jeremy Saulnier’s harrowing 2015 film Green Room, which examines the subject from a more contemporary perspective.

Instead, the film adopts a rather more facile approach. This is most evident in its choice to use animated “bangs” and “thwocks” like a Batman comic during the big fight sequence. By and large this section (by far the worst of the four) feels like content devoid of substance.

In story two, “Don’t fight The Feeling”, the action centres around a pair of aspiring female hip-hop performers who enter into a rap battle with the performer Too Short (the real life Too Short appears in a cameo as a cop later in the film) and tackles misogyny and hip-hop culture. There are shades of seminal black indie director Spike Lee (Do The Right Thing, 1989) here in its foregrounding of black culture and subjects (although, it must be said, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden are both white).

It could have potentially complemented the punk story if it dealt with the cultural impact of 80s’ hip-hop and the struggles of female performers. But again, it feels half formed – part of the problem being that the film is trying perhaps to do too much.

There are things to enjoy, however, in the film. It is pleasingly gory and has some clever moments. Man of the moment Pedro Pascal takes the lead in the third section (the best of the four), “Born to Mack”, as an enforcer trying to go straight and Ben Mendelsohn puts in an enjoyably sleazy turn as a corrupt cop. The success of the film rest’s chiefly on their shoulders.

Born to Mack clearly has shades of the king of pop culture nostalgia Quentin Tarantino, especially in its clever and surprising cameo from 80s’ icon Tom Hanks who plays a mysterious video store owner. Tarantino’s films (not least 1994’s Pulp Fiction – the blueprint for this type of anthologised nostalgia cinema) were at the forefront 1990s’ indie cinema, and were framed by his obsessions with 60s, 70s and 80s pop culture.

Freaky Tales has the potential to offer a more nuanced engagement with the era and its cultural references points while still maintaining a sense of Trashy exploitation fun. Sadly it falls short of the mark.

Freaky Tales is in selected cinemas from April 18 and on digital platforms from April 28.

Matthew Melia does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

  • MIL-OSI: Best Accounting Software for Freelancers (2025): QuickBooks Named Top Accounting Software by Software Experts

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

NEW YORK CITY, April 18, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Software Experts has named QuickBooks as the Best Accounting Software for Freelancers in its annual review of tools tailored for independent professionals. The recognition highlights QuickBooks’ adaptability, ease of use, and comprehensive financial management features that continue to meet the evolving needs of the freelance economy.

    Best Accounting Software for Freelancers

    • QuickBooks – a cloud-based accounting solution developed by Intuit, designed to help individuals and businesses manage bookkeeping, invoicing, expenses, and financial reporting in one integrated platform.

With freelance work now representing a significant portion of the global workforce, the need for accessible, scalable financial tools has never been greater. Independent workers—often managing every aspect of their business operations alone—require software that streamlines time-consuming financial tasks, from tax preparation to cash flow tracking. In this context, QuickBooks stands out for offering tools that support both the simplicity freelancers often seek and the depth their businesses may grow into.

“Freelancers today need more than just a place to log expenses,” said a spokesperson for Software Experts. “They need reliable, easy-to-use platforms that combine real-time reporting, smart invoicing, and tax-ready data. QuickBooks continues to provide that foundation, especially for individuals navigating both business growth and financial self-sufficiency.”

The platform’s flagship Simple Start plan is tailored for solo entrepreneurs, offering core features such as expense tracking, income management, unlimited invoicing and quotes, and bank account syncing. It allows users to monitor financial health and plan ahead with built-in cash flow tools and smart reporting capabilities. Other features include receipt capture, instant deposits, and access to tax guidance—making it well-suited for freelancers operating as registered businesses.

What further sets the Simple Start plan apart is that it comes with Intuit Assist, an AI-powered automation tool included in the QuickBooks Simple Start plan. Positioned as a “Do it for You” solution, Intuit Assist automates routine tasks, generates invoices and expense records from emails and images, and even manages client communications. Freelancers can use personalized invoice reminders to get paid up to five days faster and improve the likelihood of overdue invoices being paid in full by 10%. The assistant also tracks transactions, streamlines workflows, and frees up time—allowing users to focus on growing their business instead of managing paperwork.

For those seeking lighter solutions, QuickBooks offers its Solopreneur and Money plans. The Solopreneur plan provides basic bookkeeping features, expense categorization for tax deductions, and simplified invoicing, while the Money plan is geared toward money management and payment processing through a no-fee business bank account. These lower-tier options provide alternatives for freelancers at different stages of their business journey, especially those with minimal accounting needs.

The platform also integrates payment solutions and banking options, offering flexibility across varying business models. While more advanced features such as instant deposits are limited to higher-tier plans, freelancers still benefit from the same-day deposit capabilities available in Solopreneur and Money plans.

Overall, QuickBooks users can save up to 30 hours each month on accounting and bookkeeping tasks, freeing up valuable time to focus on running and growing their business. This time-saving benefit has made it a practical choice for freelancers managing multiple roles.

QuickBooks’ versatility has made it a popular choice not only among individual freelancers but also small teams, creative professionals, and consultants managing multiple clients and income streams. Its adaptability to both solo and scaling operations reflects broader trends in the freelance space, where flexibility and growth-readiness remain key factors in software selection.

With its continued development and commitment to user-focused updates, QuickBooks is expected to remain a mainstay in the freelance business toolkit. Its ability to combine accounting precision with ease of use makes it an appealing option for professionals who prioritize both clarity and control in managing their business finances.

As the freelance economy continues to grow—fueled by shifts in remote work, digital entrepreneurship, and creative independence—the demand for tailored financial tools is set to increase. Platforms like QuickBooks that offer a range of solutions for various stages of self-employment are well-positioned to meet that demand.
