  • MIL-Evening Report: Top unis have imposed new restrictions on campus protests. What does this mean for students, staff and democracy?

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Joo-Cheong Tham, Professor, Melbourne Law School, The University of Melbourne

A wave of restrictions on protesting has been rippling through Australia’s top universities.

Over the past year, all of Australia’s eight top research universities (the Group of Eight) have individually increased restrictions on campus protests.

The changes include bans on indoor protests and restrictions on banners, posters and student announcements. At some campuses, groups need to give notice or obtain university approval if they are going to protest.

Why has this happened and what does it mean for protests, free speech and democracy at Australian universities?

    Why are university protests important?

Over the past 60 years, campus protests have been a defining feature of Australian university life.

In the 1960s and ‘70s, they were a breeding ground for social protest, including rallies against apartheid and the Vietnam War, and in favour of women’s rights. In more recent years, students have protested on key social, political and environmental issues, from university fees to the invasion of Iraq and climate action.

This protest history feeds into the broader purposes of universities. Universities act as a modern-day “public square”. This means they are a place where ideas can be freely debated and difficult issues can be explored. In this way, they act as a key component of a free and healthy democracy.

As Victorian university legislation notes, universities should promote

critical and free enquiry, informed intellectual discourse and public debate within the University and in the wider society.

    Restricting protests for campus safety

Since early 2024, there have been increasing restrictions on campus protests.

These come in the wake of the months-long encampments protesting the war in Gaza – and ensuing concerns over antisemitism at universities and campus safety.

They have also coincided with increased public scrutiny over university governance. This includes accusations vice-chancellors are running a “lawless sector,” pointing to underpayment of staff, high levels of executive pay and criticism of the way some universities managed the protests.

    What have universities done?

In this heightened context, universities have increased restrictions on campus protests, arguing they are needed for safety.

Universities have taken various measures. For example, the University of Western Australia has restricted student announcements in class (or “lecture-bashing”).

To ensure safety and wellbeing, student announcements are not permitted at the commencement of lectures or other teaching and learning activities.

The University of Adelaide has banned student encampments and indoor protests.

The changes across the Group of Eight mean students announcing a rally for climate action in class now risk disciplinary action at some universities. Sit-ins calling on universities to divest from weapon companies are no longer permitted at others. At some campuses, union members going to stop-work meetings to protest staff cuts could be engaging in employee misconduct.

The legal basis of the restrictions

Australian universities are typically set up under state legislation and through this have broad powers to regulate campus protests.

They can impose obligations on students through university rules and direct their staff as employers. They can determine who is allowed to enter and remain on campus through their powers to manage land they either own or control.

Universities in South Australia and Victoria also have powers under state legislation to make university statutes and regulations.

The protest restrictions have relied on a mix of these powers.

    Could these changes be challenged?

But these restrictions are also subject to enterprise agreements made under the federal Fair Work Act which protect academic and intellectual freedom. For example, the University of Sydney’s enterprise agreement entitles staff to:

    • express opinions about the operation of the university and higher education policy in general

    • express unpopular or controversial views, provided that in doing so staff must not engage in harassment, vilification or intimidation.

There is also the implied right of freedom of political communication under the Australian Constitution.

This means both the Fair Work Act and Constitution may provide grounds for a legal challenge to many of these new restrictions. The High Court has previously ruled restrictions on protest must be proportionate and necessary for preventing harm and damage.

The protest restrictions also implicate various human rights. Under international law, which Australia has ratified, staff and students have freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly. As workers, staff have freedom of association through trade unions, including the right to organise.

Many of these measures would seem to restrict activities where there is no or little threat to safety. In some cases, there are arguably excessive and disproportionate means to ensure safety.

    What will happen now?

Some university students, staff and unions have opposed these protest restrictions.

But there is a balancing to be struck here. Other students and staff have not felt safe on campus and in class and have called for more safety protections. This has particularly been the case for those from Jewish backgrounds.

Given the doubts over their legality, court challenges may be on the horizon. It is also possible some groups will actively test these restrictions.

But we may see a chilling effect on university activism and protests, when individuals would otherwise speak their minds on campus. Some staff may be worried they will lose their jobs. Students may be also worried about academic penalties or expulsion and the impact on their future careers.

This undermines universities as a place where people talk, debate and test ideas as a key part of the learning and research process – and a vital component of our democracy.

Joo-Cheong Tham has been an employee of the University of Melbourne for more than two decades. During this time, he has participated in campus protests at the university that would now be banned by the university’s protest restrictions.

He is the Victorian Division Assistant Secretary (Academic Staff) of the National Tertiary Education Union; a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia; a Director of the Centre for Public Integrity; and an Expert Network Member of Climate Integrity.

Joo-Cheong has received funding from the Australian Research Council, the Australian Council of Trade Unions, European Trade Union Institute, International IDEA, the New South Wales Electoral Commission, the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption and the Victorian Electoral Commission.

  • MIL-OSI Global: How I’m teaching Holocaust literature in light of Canadian recommendations around combatting antisemitism

Source: The Conversation – Canada – By Regan Lipes, Extended Sessional Instructor, English and Comparative Literature, MacEwan University

As university students encounter hate speech, like statements perpetrated by music industry personalities they may have once enjoyed, they have questions about antisemitism — and what it really is.

I research and teach Jewish literature with a focus on Holocaust narratives. With rising tensions on both sides of the Israel-Hamas War, and 24 hostages still in captivity, Canadian communities feel the continued conflict domestically.

In December 2024, the House of Commons’s Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights released a comprehensive document: Heightened Anisemitism in Canada and How to Combat It.

Since Oct. 7, 2023, societal tolerance for blatant acts of antisemitism has risen. This makes this document all the more timely, especially as it reports: “Many witnesses noted that the rise in antisemitism has been particularly acute on university campuses.”

Among the document’s 19 recommendations is guidance around Holocaust education and remembrance. While there is longstanding scholarly discussion around best practices and ethics pertaining to teaching the Holocaust and remembrance, educators must also be responsive to our current — and evolving — contexts.

Here, I share ways I have sought to adapt my own approach to teaching Holocaust literature. For educators wondering how to begin approaching the integration of Holocaust topics, a 2020 collection of articles on the subject, Understanding and Teaching the Holocaust, edited by Laura Hilton (professor of history) and Avinoam Patt (professor of Holocaust studies), could be a launching point.

    Modern-day antisemitism, trajectories

The committee’s sixth recommendation is that the government of Canada work with provinces and territories to “ensure that Holocaust education in public schools and other institutions includes explanations of modern-day antisemitism and integrates a Jewish community-centered lens.”

For a course teaching film adaptations of the Holocaust, I solicited the assistance of a colleague, historian Carson Phillips, at the Azrieli Foundation, a charity whose eight funding areas include Holocaust education and legacy, to tackle this recommendation.

Working with Phillips brought an additional voice to the discussion of how Holocaust denial and Holocaust distortion are connected to antisemitism. Holocaust denial is a form of antisemitism with all its malignant intentions.

    Read more:
How Hitler conspiracies and other Holocaust disinformation undermine democratic institutions

Phillips suggested I try to additionally focus on survivor memoirs that explore life prior to the Holocaust to illustrate the trajectory of antisemitic agendas. He noted I should concentrate on memoirs with a connection to Canada so this message would be more relevant for my students.

He provided me with A Cry in Unison by Judy Cohen,
Flights of Spirit by Elly Gotz and Memories in Focus by Pinchas Gutter. I also applied his advice in the fiction I taught and incorporated the 1970 novel, Crackpot, by Adele Wiseman, to show that between the First and Second World Wars in Canada, there was societal antisemitism and social isolation of Jews.

To further connect this to a Canadian context, and to consider trajectories of hate, in the future I may include content around how there were plans to export the “final solution” from Europe to North America. This illustrates that tolerance of antisemitism can quickly threaten societal stability.

    Antisemitism far predates Nazism

I wanted my students to see that although the Holocaust was caused by antisemitism, antisemitism long predated the rise of Nazism and survives today because of a lack of shared awareness.

The Art Gallery of Alberta recently hosted an exhibit Here to Tell of photograph portraits of Holocaust survivors and their recorded testimonies.

    Read more:
Holocaust survivor stories are reminders of why we need to educate against antisemitism

In three of my courses, I gave the extra credit option to visit the exhibition and reflect on ideas, themes and concepts that resonated. Similar engagement is being implemented in high school classes to address Alberta’s curricular requirements.

This has the aim of better informing learners about what can occur when xenophobia and hate are allowed to proliferate.

The documentary connected to the exhibit vividly illustrates why antisemitism is dangerous when left to fester and breed, or if misinformation masquerades as fact.

‘Here to Tell: Faces of Holocaust Survivors’ project.

As recent events in a suburb of Edmonton suggest, not combating antisemitism allows the tentacles of white supremacy and xenophobia to affect other communities too. There, masked demonstrators stood with an apparent anti-immigration sign while one gave a Nazi salute.

    Addressing Holocaust remembrance

The eighth recommendation of Heightened Antisemitism calls for the government of Canada, “in line with its commitment to build strong communities and celebrate multiculturalism,” to “provide funding to develop a five-year program to enhance the literacy of post-secondary students regarding the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.”

For me as an educator, this made the marking of International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD) especially meaningful in the context of classroom learning in Alberta.

After all, Alberta was the province where James Keegstra first began teaching Holocaust denial to high school students in the 1980s. After Prof. Anthony Hall of the University of Lethbridge finally retired in 2018, it seemed like Holocaust denial and baseless vilification of Zionism was on the decline in Alberta. As reported by CBC, in 2016 Hall was suspended without pay for “allegedly promoting conspiracy theories and denying the Holocaust in online articles and videos.”

This year was the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and to to mark IHRD, I organized two guest speakers to present their research to students. Speakers helped contextualize the immediate legacy of the Holocaust and how this contributes to contemporary antisemitism.

With Yom HaShoah (Jewish Holocaust Remembrance Day) soon approaching, these discussions should be at the forefront of Canadian human rights awareness.

    Wider implications

Although my students are likely not familiar with the report’s broader recommendations for how to combat antisemitism, a sizeable portion of the report’s advice does focus on university campuses. There are implications far beyond teaching the Holocaust or Jewish subject matters which may potentially impact students.

    Recommendations include:

    • Calls for more robust and effective strategies to combat antisemitism and safeguard Jewish communities across Canada;

    • For action to address antisemitic incidents;

    • That the “full diversity of the Jewish identity be acknowledged within Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) frameworks, including Jewish peoplehood, ethnicity, nationality, multi-denominational religion, cultural diversity, and language, as well as Zionist and Indigenous aspects of Jewish identity.” This point notes that “this includes the recognition of Zionism as the self-determination of Jewish people in their ancestral homeland of Israel.”

It has yet to be seen how a change in federal Canadian leadership will uphold the values articulated in this important committee report, but the document does provide hope for Holocaust educators and broader Canadian communities isolated by a rise in hate.

Regan Lipes does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

U.S. special presidential envoy Steve Witkoff met with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Saturday and had “very positive and constructive” discussions, said the White House.

“Special Envoy Witkoff underscored to Dr. Araghchi that he had instructions from President (Donald) Trump to resolve our two nations’ differences through dialogue and diplomacy, if that is possible,” it said in a statement.

“These issues are very complicated, and Special Envoy Witkoff’s direct communication today was a step forward in achieving a mutually beneficial outcome,” it said, adding that the two sides plan to meet again next Saturday.

Earlier Saturday, Iranian media also described the talks as “constructive” and revealed plans for more discussions next week.

The meeting marked the first time the United States and Iran engaged directly since Trump returned to the White House.

Trump has repeatedly said Iran needs to rapidly reach a deal that makes sure it can’t obtain a nuclear weapon or will face the prospect of military strikes.

Iran and the United States will hold the second round of negotiations on April 19 after the two sides concluded their “indirect” talks on Saturday in the Omani capital of Muscat in a “constructive” atmosphere, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

The two-and-a-half-hour talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff centered on Tehran’s nuclear issue and sanctions relief, said the ministry in a statement.

It added that the two sides agreed to continue the talks next week, noting that when leaving the negotiations venue, the heads of the two countries’ delegations spoke for a few minutes in the presence of the Omani foreign minister.

In an address to reporters in Muscat following the talks, Araghchi said the first round of the talks was “constructive and held in a calm and very respectful atmosphere.”

“No inappropriate language was used and the two sides demonstrated their commitment to advancing the talks until the achievement of a mutually favorable agreement from an equal position,” he added.

The minister revealed that the second round of the talks “are scheduled to be held at the same level next Saturday, but the venue will probably not be here (Muscat).”

The two sides had decided to enter a general framework needed for an agreement in the next round, Araghchi said, noting that both sides favored an agreement that would be reached as soon as possible.

He added that in the next round of the talks, “we will try to enter the negotiations’ agenda, which will of course have a timetable alongside it,” expressing hope that in the upcoming negotiations, the two sides would be able to finalize a basis for starting “real talks.”

The talks in Muscat came after U.S. President Donald Trump stated in early March that he had sent a letter to Iranian leaders — via the United Arab Emirates — proposing negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran later confirmed receiving the letter and left the door open for indirect engagement.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Saturday that Israel will soon expand its operations to most of the Gaza Strip territory.

He told Gaza residents in a message that they have to evacuate due to the expected operations.

“For those who are interested, voluntary crossing to several countries will also be possible” under Washington’s plan, which Israel is “working to implement,” Katz said, referring to U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial relocation proposal for Gaza residents.

“This is the last moment to remove Hamas, release all the Israeli hostages, and bring an end to the war,” Katz remarked.

Earlier in the day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced in a statement that it had fully encircled southern Gaza’s Rafah city by completing the establishment of the “Morag Corridor,” a route in the south of the strip intended to separate Rafah and Khan Younis.

The IDF noted that it will extend operational control over the corridor and carry out “counter-terrorism” operations in the area. The Israeli military, through the seizure of the key route, turned the area between the “Morag Corridor” and the “Philadelphi Corridor” near the border with Egypt into part of its security zone.

Later on Saturday, the IDF said its Air Force intercepted three rockets fired from Gaza towards southern Israel.

The rocket launches triggered sirens in open spaces bordering Gaza, with no casualties reported, it added.

Following the rocket launches, IDF Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee said in a statement that Israel “will attack with great force any area from which rockets are fired,” and ordered residents of the Khan Younis area to move westward to the “designated” humanitarian zones in the Al-Mawasi area.

Residents are also being evacuated in northern Gaza, and territory is being taken there, along with the expansion of the military buffer zone on the Netzarim Corridor in central Gaza, Adraee added.

Also on Saturday, the Hamas-run Gaza media office said Israel has used water as “a weapon of war” to commit “a crime of slow mass killing” against Gaza residents.

It accused Israel of destroying over 90 percent of the water and sanitation infrastructure in Gaza, preventing technical crews from reaching the strip to repair damaged facilities, targeting workers who were carrying out their humanitarian missions, and blocking the supply of electricity and fuel needed to operate wells and desalination plants, among others.

Israel has blocked the entry of all humanitarian aid into Gaza since March 2. It then ended a two-month ceasefire with Hamas on March 18 and resumed deadly air and ground assaults on the enclave.

On Friday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East issued an urgent warning over rapidly depleting essential supplies in Gaza.

The renewed Israeli attacks have so far killed 1,563 Palestinians and injured 4,004 others, Gaza health authorities said Saturday, adding the death toll in the enclave since the war began in October 2023 has risen to 50,933, with 116,045 injured.

“I really appreciate attending this event,” said Sahin, vice president of global purchasing and logistics at Hattat Holding A.S., a Turkish company engaged in energy, automotive, agricultural and real estate development. He noted his assurance that the event would help him meet with potential Chinese and Russian investors and cooperation partners.

The China-SCO Sustainable Development Industrial Investment Promotion Event, which concluded on Friday, saw Sahin’s company engage in negotiations with the China Coal Technology & Engineering Group to explore investment opportunities in potential coal-cleaning projects.

Broader cooperation with Chinese enterprises is also underway in sectors such as engine assembly, production and sales, as well as wind power generation, according to Sahin.

“This event has been a good start, and the upcoming SCO summit will further promote mutual understanding and future planning among all participating countries,” he said.

China will host an SCO summit in Tianjin this autumn. Among the summit’s advance events, the promotional event Sahin attended has brought fresh momentum to economic and trade cooperation between China and SCO member states, observer states and dialogue partners.

Türkiye, Sri Lanka, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia were among the participating SCO dialogue partners.

During the event, the China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone disclosed significant progress.

The Tianjin TEDA Electric Power Company announced a partnership with SCZone Utilities S.A.E., and revealed that the China-Africa TEDA Investment Co., Ltd., which developed the cooperation zone, will build a 200-megawatt substation.

This critical infrastructure project aims to resolve power supply constraints for major projects in the cooperation zone, lower business costs for enterprises while drawing in premium investors, and accelerate industrial clustering in the zone, according to Wang Weihua, general manager of the Tianjin TEDA Electric Power Company.

Established in 2008, the zone has become Egypt’s most competitive industrial hub, serving as a benchmark of China-Egypt cooperation.

“Tianjin TEDA is one of our best partners,” said Ahmed Salaheldin Abdelfattah Elhomosani, general manager of SCZone Utilities S.A.E., noting that the cooperation zone has attracted a significant amount of investment.

Trade between China and SCO member states, observer states and dialogue partners came in at a record high of 890 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, accounting for approximately 14.4 percent of China’s total foreign trade that year, according to official statistics.

Source: United States of America – The White House (video statements)

I want to wish the Jewish people in America and Israel, and all around the world, a very happy Passover.

Every year at this time, Jewish families celebrate God’s liberation of the ancient Israelites from slavery in Egypt, guiding them through the prophet Moses on a forty-year journey to a very, very promised land.

The story of Exodus, which is retold around the globe and all over the world at every Passover Seder, is a reminder not only of the enduring strength of the Jewish people, but of the importance of putting our faith in Almighty God no matter what the circumstance.

To all the Jewish families gathering with friends and loved ones this week, have a blessed Passover, and may God continue to watch over the Jewish people, the State of Israel, and the United States of America.

    Thank you very much.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Georgia Woman Found Guilty of Kidnapping Elderly Victim

Source: Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) State Crime Alerts (c)

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A federal jury in Asheville returned a guilty verdict late yesterday against Stephanie Miranda Neace, 32, of Blairsville, Georgia, for the 2023 kidnapping and robbery of an elderly victim, announced Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. Neace’s co-defendant, Jordan Nathaniel Hedden, 31, of Murphy, N.C., pleaded guilty to kidnapping and will be sentenced on April 14.

Robert M. DeWitt, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in North Carolina joins U.S. Attorney Ferguson in making today’s announcement.

“This was a frightening crime against an elderly victim who was just trying to help out of the kindness of her heart,” said U.S. Attorney Ferguson.  “People who commit crimes like this affect how we treat one another, and we are committed to bringing them to justice.”

According to court documents, trial evidence, and witness testimony, on November 30, 2023, the victim, a 71-year-old female, was driving from Georgia to North Carolina, when she saw the defendants walking. The victim offered the defendants a ride because it was cold outside. The defendants accepted the ride, and soon after they entered North Carolina, Hedden instructed the victim to drive to his car. When they arrived at the location, a car was not there. Hedden then ordered the victim to stop the vehicle, and when the victim refused, Hedden forced the victim to stop the car and get in the back seat. Hedden then took over driving.

According to evidence presented at trial, the victim began to cry and Hedden yelled at her and told her to shut up. Trial evidence showed that Hedden appeared to be high and agitated and became paranoid that the victim had a tracking device. At one point, Hedden stopped the vehicle, and he and Neace searched the car and the victim herself for tracking devices. Then, they took the victim’s phone and disabled it. Hedden also demanded money from the victim, but the victim only had $2. Fearing for her safety, the victim told the defendants to take her to an ATM and the defendants agreed. During the drive into Tennessee, Hedden made the victim promise that she would not identify them to the police.

During the drive to the ATM, the victim convinced Hedden to let her withdraw money from a gas station ATM instead of a bank. The victim also told Hedden that she would give the defendants the money if they let her stay behind safely at the gas station. When they arrived at the gas station, the victim took her purse and her car key fob. She told Hedden to turn off the car so the headlights could not be seen from the people inside the gas station, and Hedden complied. As the victim and Hedden were walking toward the gas station, the victim began to run to the door and scream for help. Hedden ran back to the car, attempted to use it to flee but was unable to start the car without the key fob. Hedden and Neace then fled on foot and escaped into the woods but were apprehended days later.

Neace was convicted of kidnapping which carries a maximum prison sentence of up to life imprisonment. On November 13, 2024, Hedden pleaded guilty to kidnapping. Both Hedden and Neace are currently in custody awaiting sentencing.

In making today’s announcement, U.S. Attorney Ferguson thanked the FBI for their investigation of the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Don Gast and Alexis Solheim of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Asheville are prosecuting the case.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Health workers call for NZ government to join global demands for ambulance massacre inquiry

    Asia Pacific Report

Health workers spoke out at a rally condemning Israel’s genocide in Gaza and the latest atrocity against Palestinian aid workers today, calling on the New Zealand government to join global demands for an independent investigation.

They were protesting over last month’s massacre of 15 Palestinian rescue workers and the destruction of their ambulances in Gaza’s Rafah district under heavy fire.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has called for an independent international inquiry into the “deliberate killing” of 8 ambulance medics, 6 civil defence workers and 1 UN worker reportedly executed by the Israeli forces on March 23.

Their ambulances were destroyed and buried together with the bodies of the victims in a shallow grave a week after the crews went missing.

One PRCS paramedic, Assaad al-Nassasra, was reported to be still missing.

Among the speakers in the rally in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s Te Komititanga Square, Amnesty International’s Audrey Van Ryn said: “These killings must be independently and impartially investigated and the perpetrators held to account.

“Medical personnel carrying out their humanitarian duties most be respected and protected in all circumstances.”

Health worker Jason Brooke read out a message from the secretary-general of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Jagan Chapagain, in response to the killing of the Palestinian first-responders.

    ‘Their ambulances were clearly marked’
“I am heartbroken. These dedicated ambulance workers were responding to wounded people. They were humanitarians. They wore emblems that should have protected them; their ambulances were clearly marked,” said Chapagain.

“They should have returned to their families; they did not.”

Fourteen of the Palestinian aid workers killed by Israel last month. The 15th is still missing. Graphic: Al Jazeera/Creative Commons

Their bodies were discovered a week later by fellow workers. A video from one of the slain Palestinian Red Crescent medics contradicting the lies propagated by Israel’s military that the vehicles were “advancing suspiciously toward IDF troops without headlights or emergency signals”

These first responders were not mistakenly misidentified. They were travelling, clearly visible in red crescent marked ambulances with their lights on. They posed no threat.

According to the United Nations, at least 1060 healthcare workers have been killed in the 18 months since Israel launched its genocidal offensive in Gaza.

“Whether it’s first-responders and medics, health workers or reporters, not only are these workers being targeted with impunity by the IOF, but their deaths seem to barely cause a ripple,” said Brooke, who was greeted with cries of shame.

“Where is the condemnation of our politicians? Our media?”

    ‘Dehumanisation of Palestinian life’
“As the Palestinian poet and author Mohammed El-Kurd suggests, what we are witnessing is the dehumanisation of Palestinian life.

“Israel only has to mention the word ‘Hamas’ and the indoctrinated look-away. As if resistance to genocide itself were a crime — the punishment a life predetermined for death.

“Genocide does not distinguish between civilian, aid worker, health worker, reporter and militant. All are condemned.”

Medical personnel, medical transport, hospitals and other medical facilities, the injured and sick are all specifically protected under international humanitarian law.

The devastating Gaza massacre represents the single most deadly attack on Red Cross or Red Crescent workers anywhere in the world since 2017.

Secretary-general Chapagain said: “The number of Palestine Red Crescent volunteers and staff killed since the start of this conflict is now 30.

“We stand with Palestine Red Crescent and the loved ones of those killed on this darkest of days.”

    ‘Palestine wants freedom to live’
Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA) advocate Janfrie Wakim called on the crowd to give each other “high fives” in recognition of their solidarity in turning up for the protest in the 79th week since the war began.

“I like the sign in front of me: ‘Palestine wants the freedom to live while Israel has the freedom to kill!’ she said.

“We mourn those thousands of innocent people  — some with families here and in Gaza and the West Bank — who made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives, and the thousands unaccounted for in rubble and over 100,000 injured.

“Palestine wants the freedom to live while Israel has the freedom to kill!” . . . a placard at today’s Auckland solidarity rally. Image: Asia Pacific Report

    “Mostly women and children.

“The humanitarian workers who have been murdered serving humanity.”

Wakim said the genocide had been enabled by the wealthiest countries in the world and Western media — “including our own with few exceptions”.

“Without its lies, its deflections, its failure to report the agonising reality of Palestinians suffering, Israel would not have been able to commit its atrocities.”

    All fatalities women and children
Meanwhile, the United Nations reports Palestinian women and children were the only fatalities in at least three dozen Israeli air strikes on Gaza since mid-March, as it warned that Israel’s military offensive threatened Palestinians’ “continued existence as a group”.

Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said on Friday that the office had documented 224 Israeli strikes on residential buildings and tents for displaced people in the Gaza Strip between March 18 and April 9.

“In some 36 strikes about which the UN Human Rights Office corroborated information, the fatalities recorded so far were only women and children,” she said.

The findings come as Israel’s attacks on Gaza have killed more than 1500 Palestinians since the Israeli military broke a ceasefire in March, according to figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, reports Al Jazeera.

A German official was the latest to call for an independent probe over Israel’s killing of the 15 medical aid workers.

An investigation into Israel’s killing of paramedics must be carried out independently, said German Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Assistance Luise Amtsberg.

“This alleged violation of international law must not go unpunished,” Amtsberg said in a message on social media platform Bluesky.

    Israel’s ‘distortion’ straining ties
“The investigation must be carried out quickly and independently, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice as soon as possible. The Israeli government and judiciary have a duty here,” she said.

Israel’s distortion of the event was “once again” straining ties between Germany and Israel, she added.

Myriam Laaroussi, an emergency coordinator with Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, told Al Jazeera from al-Mawasi, an area west of Khan Younis that houses thousands of displaced Gaza families, that the health system had been destroyed.

Due to the Israeli blockade, the supplies needed to treat patients were lacking and had left children in Gaza vulnerable to disease, she said.

The desalination unit was not functioning any more due to Israel’s decision to cut electricity, which had decreased the capacity to retain good hygiene and was leading to outbreaks of polio and scabies.

“We see that it’s a ‘slow death’ for many Palestinians, with shortages of food and water leading to a loss of weight and medical issues,” she said.

The ceasefire had been an opportunity to scale up the capacity of the different health facilities, but it had been too short to have enough effect, and now health facilities were being attacked again.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Lorna Slater Spring Conference 2025

    Source: Scottish Greens

    12 Apr 2025

Speaking at her party’s Spring Conference in Stirling, Scottish Green Co-Leader Lorna Slater called for action to tax wealth and big polluters to build a fairer, greener Scotland.

When we met last October our country and our world were in a state of flux. Our political landscape is still shifting dramatically.

We have a Labour government telling us that things can only get worse while they cut the incomes of sick and disabled people. They kept the cruel two child cap, which has plunged thousands of families into totally avoidable poverty.

Although they look set to nationalise British Steel they have betrayed the workers of Grangemouth.

They betrayed the WASPI women after campaigning for them for years.

They kowtow to a far right Trump administration that is dismantling hard won rights and freedoms.

Donald Trump is a dangerous, fraudulent, misogynistic, racist, climate-change denier.

He opposes democratic values and the rule of law.

    His White House is spreading lies and misinformation about abortion rights here in Scotland – including disgraceful attacks on our colleague Gillian Mackay’s Safe Access Zone Bill;

Labour may be happy to make friends with dangerous despots, but we refuse to play nicely while the world burns.

Trump and his hateful politics are not welcome in Scotland. Our country is not his playground.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, you need to cancel the state visit. Cancel it now.

The impact of Nigel Farage’s hard right Reform party rising in the polls, is already being felt in Scotland as the Tories and Labour shift to the right to try and rescue their votes.

The Tories dropping any kind of commitment to net zero, and Labour throwing trans-people under the bus.

As Patrick said: You can’t beat the far right by stealing their policies.

You don’t beat Nigel Farage by cozying up to Donald Trump.

The Scottish Greens will stand our ground as a proud party of the left.

We stand with refugees who are being attacked by racist politicians and the billionaire-owned press.

We stand with people who have fled war and conflict only to be blamed by those who have cut services and plunged families into poverty.

We stand with the trans community who have been the focus of a relentless campaign of demonisation from MPs and MSPs from all the other parties.

Trans rights are human rights. Our Party stands with you today, tomorrow and always.

We stand with the people of Palestine who are suffering a genocide that has been armed, and supported and enabled by the UK government.

The crisis there is getting worse and so is the human cost.

Babies are being killed long before they have the chance to mark their first birthdays.

And yet the response from Downing Street has been to continue supporting the carnage.

If Labour is to have any moral authority then it must end arms sales to Israel.

It’s not just them. It’s time for the SNP to finally end the grants that are bolstering Israel’s arms dealers.

For all of us working towards a greener, fairer world, it can feel like we’re losing ground.

Sometimes it’s hard to keep hold of hope that we can build something better.

The future can be brilliant. We just have to decide to make it so.

By working together the Scottish Greens have already taken big steps into that better future.

    We have taxed high earners to raise billions of pounds for public services;

    We’ve given free bus travel to everyone under 22;

We’ve made sure that every organisation in Scotland that receives public money, pays the living wage.

    We’ve delivered free school meals to more hungry children than ever before;

Our rent freeze and eviction protections for renters across Scotland saved tenants thousands of pounds and protected many from being made homeless.

We have made a big difference to people’s lives.

Our work has helped people and planet, and made our country a fairer and better place.

All of this has happened because of the work of the people in this room – our volunteers around the country, and our work with campaigners and activists.

Among the hardest working people in our movement are the Green Councillors who are transforming local communities for the better.

Green Councillors in Glasgow have secured free public transport pilots and extra funding for safer parks and streets.

In Edinburgh, our Green councillors stopped council venues and services running advertising from climate wreckers and arms dealers.

Day in and day out, our councillors across Scotland are supporting their constituents and standing up for their communities.

That’s what Councillor Bryan Quinn did when he protected crucial library services and Community Access Points in Clackmannanshire.

It’s what Councillor Kris Leask did when he secured an Offshore Energy Strategy for Orkney – something which he’s now leading on delivering.

After years of campaigning, our Dunblane and Bridge of Allan councillor Alasdair Tollemache – working with my MSP colleague Mark Ruskell – has successfully protected a vital local green space, Park of Keir, from expensive luxury housing and a tennis centre with unaffordable and inaccessible facilities.

These are the kind of things we achieve when we put our values into action.

It’s what we achieve when we work together to get greens elected.

We will be able to achieve even more by getting more Greens elected.

Can we please all show our appreciation for our councillors.

The last few years have been difficult for most people, but they haven’t been difficult for everyone.

The wealth of billionaires has more than tripled since 2010. They’ve made out like bandits in the last few years, cashing in every step of the way.

Through austerity, COVID, global market turmoil – the super-rich have been able to enlarge their wealth whilst ordinary people and families have suffered.

It is not right that as billionaires are getting richer and richer, household bills are getting higher and higher for everybody else.

It is not right that fossil fuel companies have raked in huge profits, whilst abandoning any significant investment in green renewables.

It is not right that some of the wealthiest people in our society are telling us that we cannot afford to provide public services for people.

It’s not that we can’t afford good public services, it’s that we can’t afford billionaires.

    Billionaires should not exist.

It is thanks to the Scottish Greens that the highest earners in Scotland, and people who own more than one home, have to pay more.

When I see headlines in the right-wing press whining about Scotland’s fairer tax system – it makes me proud.

We need to tax the rich.

We need to think beyond income tax, we need to tax wealth, we need to tax carbon emissions, we need to tax the big polluters to put money back into people’s pockets, back into public services and to build a fairer, greener country.

Nowhere is this injustice more prevalent than when it comes to housing.

Over the past decade, the cost of renting has skyrocketed. Landlords have been charging more than ever before.

Right now, private landlords have too much power and renters are suffering.

The Scottish Greens have made big steps to protect tenants.

We froze rents and banned evictions in the aftermath of COVID.

We wrote the Bill to introduce rent controls.

And thanks to protections brought in by the Scottish Greens, thousands of people have been protected from eye watering rent hikes.

But without us in the room, the SNP are turning their backs on renters.

They are buckling under pressure from vested interests who want to water down our rent controls.

They want landlords to be able to raise rents higher than inflation.

If people aren’t getting a big pay rise, why should landlords?

Homes should be for living in – not for profiteering.

It’s time to raise tenants rights and lower rents.

We’re campaigning to bring in a permanent ban on winter evictions, and we’ve got plans to help local communities force absentee landlords and landowners to sell or rent derelict land for housing.

It isn’t just housing where the SNP is coming up short.

It’s the same story when it comes to transport.

If we want to reduce emissions and build happier, healthier communities – public transport is key.

Thanks to the Scottish Greens, hundreds of thousands of young people can now get a bus for free – saving families thousands of pounds, and opening up opportunities for Scotland’s young people.

Thanks to the Scottish Greens, people seeking asylum in Scotland will soon get free bus passes

Thanks to the Scottish Greens, thousands of young islanders can now jump on inter-island ferries for free.

    We did that.

But the SNP has failed to deliver the scale of investment needed to make public transport a reliable, affordable and accessible option for all.

We need more publicly owned bus networks across the whole of Scotland – and capped bus fares. A cap of £2 for every local journey.

Private bus companies should not be able to hike fares at the same time as cutting lifeline services.

It should not be cheaper to travel between Scotland’s two biggest cities by car than by rail.

The Scottish Government should not be pouring funds into dualling the A9, increasing traffic, pollution and noise, instead of investing in buses and trains.

It is far too late in the climate emergency to be building new roads.

What we need is cheaper rail for all – that means ending peak time rail fares for good.

Cheaper buses, ferries and trains – a win-win for people and planet.

    Our planet needs us.

I know I’m not the only one who has been really shocked by the wildfires that we are seeing across Scotland right now.

Not the only one who has been horrified by the devastation to people’s homes, businesses and farms that has been done by floods and storms.

This is the climate catastrophe accelerating. Governments around the world have let us down. They didn’t listen to science, they didn’t cut carbon emissions, they didn’t stop their destruction of our eco-systems.

What we are seeing now in Scotland, will only get worse, if governments continue to prevaricate, unsure of how to politically manage the cost of moving to an economy that isn’t dependent on fossil fuels.

Well anyone who was flooded out or who’s land is burning can see the cost of not making the change.

So much of what needs to change: insulating homes, building better public transport, building 20 minute neighbourhoods, moving to lower impact agriculture, will actually make life better for everyone.

For the kids who will be able to safely cycle to school. For the farmers who can improve their profits by buying fewer expensive fertilisers and pesticides.

In just over a year’s time, we’ll be heading into the 2026 Holyrood election and this is the story that we are going to tell.

Just like free bus travel for under 22’s, the things we need the Scottish Government to do on climate will improve life opportunities for Scots, and will put money back in their pockets.

Green policies will make life better in practical ways. Warm homes. Clean air. Affordable trains. More buses.

We know what change is needed. That’s why we exist.

The power of our shared vision. So many new possibilities, so much potential.

Some say it’s the hope that kills you. I don’t believe that.

I think it’s the hope that keeps us all here. It’s certainly what’s kept me here.

Everything you do as volunteers in this party matters. Without all of you there would be no Greens in Councils or in Holyrood. There would be no free bus travel for asylum seekers or any of the other changes that we have achieved.

Whether it’s the all important knocking on doors, taking meeting minutes, delivering leaflets, everything you do matters and it all adds up. It adds up to growing a Green movement in Scotland, it adds to how much we can get done.

Thank you for all the work you do

Thank you, in advance for the many miles of pavement you’ll be walking and wheeling in the next 14 months listening to voters on their doorsteps, delivering leaflets, supporting your candidates. We are so grateful for all of it.

Now is the time to stand together. To be brave and bold. Our vision for a greener, fairer Scotland could never be more important.

Let’s show them that the Scottish Greens are the ones who deliver.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Caitlin Johnstone: Israel’s innocent oopsie-poopsie medical massacre mistake

Report by Dr David Robie – Café Pacific. –

    COMMENTARY: By Caitlin Johnstone

The Israeli military changed its story many times about why its forces killed 15 medical workers and then buried them and their vehicles to hide the evidence. After their initial claim that the medical vehicles were approaching “suspiciously” without their emergency lights on was disproven by video evidence, they then called the whole thing a big mistake.

Sure, who among us has not accidentally massacred 15 medical workers and buried them and their vehicles in a shallow grave from time to time? We’re only human, mistakes happen.

Asked by the press about Israel’s latest war crime scandal, White House National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes blamed the whole thing on Hamas, saying, “Hamas uses ambulances and more broadly human shields for terrorism.

A cellphone video has revealed that the IDF’s claim about ambulance lights being off was false after they shot and killed 15 Palestinian medics in Gaza.

“President Trump understands the impossible situation this tactic creates for Israel and holds Hamas entirely responsible.”

Netanyahu could live stream himself eating a Palestinian baby and telling the camera “I am eating this baby because I love genocide,” and the next day Trump’s podium people would be responding to questions from the press by shrieking “HAMAS!” with their fingers in their ears.

Israeli’s ‘innocent mistake’    Video/Audio: Caitlin Johnstone

    ❖

To be helpful I have written some headlines the Western press can use to frame Israel executing 15 medical workers in the most positive light possible:

“Fifteen medical workers pause rescue duties following bullet-related incident”

“Rescue workers, vehicles found in shallow grave after perishing for mysterious and unknowable reasons”

“Israeli forces appear to be suspected of possibly accidentally firing on ambulance staff by mistake, perchance”

“Medical workers killed by IDF, says Hamas-affiliated United Nations”

“IDF assists medical workers in locating scene of latest massacre in Gaza”

“The universe is an ineffable mystery; objectivity is a myth and our finite primate brains were not evolved to comprehend any ultimate truths about absolute reality in its naked form”

“Gunshots heard in the Middle East. A flashing siren. Innocence no more.”

“IDF hunted and slaughtered 15 healthcare workers and buried them and their vehicles to try to cover it up, please don’t fire me, that’s what happened, I’m just trying to do my job”

    ❖

Not taking a position on Gaza is taking a position on Gaza. One you’ll have to live with for the rest of your life.

    ❖

The mass media are giving so much more attention to this past weekend’s anti-Trump protests than they ever gave the anti-genocide protests because that is their job. It’s their job to amplify opposition between the two mainstream parties while marginalising those who oppose the crimes of both.

Movements which keep people plugged in to the two-party sock puppet show will always be amplified and encouraged, while movements which highlight the abusiveness of the US empire regardless of who happens to be in office will always be ignored at best and smeared at worst.

That’s why we’ve seen so much attention go into Trumpism and anti-Trumpism while genuine anti-war movements struggle to get off the ground, and while pro-Palestine demonstrators are slandered as anti-semitic terrorist supporters.

As long as people can be herded into supporting either of the two mainstream parties against the other, they are fully plugged in to the artificially manufactured worldview which protects the interests of oligarchy and empire. When people draw attention to the tyranny and abuse of the US empire itself without getting drawn in to the two-handed puppet show of party politics, they unplug their minds from this worldview the propagandists have worked so hard to plug them in to.

As long as enough people are either screaming “Trump!” or “Not Trump!”, the empire’s crimes can continue unimpeded. Only when people stop clapping along with the puppet show and start fighting against the empire itself will there be real change in a positive direction.

This means opposing the abuses that are advanced by both parties like war, genocide, militarism, imperialism, capitalism, Zionism, and authoritarianism. Until then their political energy will keep being steered in directions which pose no threat to the powerful, like we’re seeing with these anti-Trump protests.

    ❖

I’ve been seeing a lot of antiwar Trump supporters finally starting to admit that they were duped, and beginning to turn against him. I won’t join the voices slamming them for supporting Trump in the first place; I’ll only say welcome aboard, and congrats on being better people than everyone else who voted for Trump.

    Speech

Minister for Europe opening remarks at Antalya Diplomacy Forum: Saturday 12 April

Minister for Europe Stephen Doughty makes opening remarks at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Antalya, Turkey.

The principles are fundamental, and they are what is at stake here. And as Andrea said, this is not just a situation where we see a complete violation of those principles that were in the Helsinki Final Act, that we all stood by, and we have stood by for those 50 years. But it’s also the UN Charter that is fundamentally under threat by Russia’s aggression.

And of course, this isn’t just the aggression we’ve seen against Ukraine. It’s the other hybrid and destabilizing activities that they prosecute across our continents against our democracies more generally, and whether that’s disruptions, attempted disruptions, in the Western Balkans or in Moldova or elsewhere.

This has consequences for all of us, and this matters for everybody in this room. It matters for everybody in the room if those principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty are not abided by, and it matters deeply for all of our people. Most importantly for the people of Ukraine at the moment, but for all of us.

I was in Kyiv just a few weeks ago, and I could hear in the background the alarm going off there. For Ukrainians in the room, this would probably be the air raid alarm on their on their phones, because Ukraine is seeing that escalation every night, civilians being attacked and killed.

I was in Bucha, which saw some of the worst, appalling atrocities that we’ve seen since the start of this conflict, and seeing those mass graves and others, but also hearing about how just the night before, how drones have come and killed civilians, and how children and others have been taken away and still no idea where those where those young people and those civilians are. That is a brutal attack on the values that all of us in this room stand for. So I think we must absolutely recognize what’s at stake here.

That’s why we as the UK are 100% ironclad in our support behind Ukraine, not just for now, but for 100 years into the future. It’s why we’re working with our NATO partners and allies here. And it’s a genuine pleasure to be with friends – it’s a genuine pleasure to be here in Antalya and to be hosted by our Turkish allies and friends. And it’s why we must double down, not only on the support for Ukraine, but also for European, Euro-Atlantic security more generally – that’s what we’re doing.

That’s the leadership the Prime Minister and President Macron are showing, working with President Trump on that secure and sustainable peace for Ukraine. Which Ukraine again has come forward from, and yet we do not see that same response from Moscow. And President Erdoğan very clearly set out yesterday the importance that that peace has to be sustainable. And that’s going to come through those of us who are willing to get in there, to put boots on the ground, to get the support to ensure that Ukrainian forces are able to defend, deter against future aggression. But also that we as NATO partners are stepping up, particularly European partners here, for our own defence.

That is what we’re doing with our spending. That’s what we’re doing with our commitments. But this matters not just for us. It matters for the globe. It matters for us in this room, because these are fundamental principles that have been attacked here by Moscow.

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Brad Schneider (D-IL)

Rep. Schneider: Did you expect the so-called Liberation Day to become Liquidation Week?

    Click to watch

WASHINGTON – Rep. Brad Schneider (IL-10), a member of the House Ways & Means Committee, grilled U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at a Ways & Means Committee hearing on the Trump Administration’s 2025 trade policy agenda.

“Amb. Greer, yes or no: didn’t Israel zero out all tariffs on US products before President Trump announced his across the board tariffs on April 2nd? [Greer Responds]

Yet the President still imposed 17% tariffs on Israel.

Amb. Greer, what’s our trade balance with the elephant and fur seals, petrels, albatrosses and penguins living on Heard and McDonald Islands?[Greer Responds]

Yet the president has imposed specific tariffs on the Heard and McDonald Islands, while not taking any action against Russia, Belarus, North Korea or Cuba.

I don’t want to disappoint my mom and my wife and have them yell and me but Mr. Greer, I am going to say what I think almost everyone is thinking…WTF?

    What’s the president thinking?

What did he, and you, think was going to happen after unilaterally declaring a global trade war?

Did you expect the so called “Liberation Day” to become “Liquidation Week,” destroying more than $10 trillion of value and moving us from an extended Bull Market to a self-induced Bear?

Did you intentionally plan to decimate Americans’ retirement accounts and 529 accounts for their kids’ education?

Did you and the President anticipate raising prices for American families already struggling to make ends meet?

Did you mean to make American businesses less, not more competitive in global markets?

Was the intention, with the largest tax increase in U.S. history, to put the United States, and maybe the entire global economy into a recession because of what the Wall Street Journal editorial board, let me repeat that, the Wall Street Journal editorial board, said is “the dumbest trade war in history.”

Already Diane Swonk, the chief economist of KPMG, is saying that her baseline forecast is a recession starting this quarter.

Jamie Dimon and JP Morgan, raised their probability of recession to 79%

WSJ reports that betting markets have it a 70%

Goldman Sachs recently raised their likelihood the second increase since last Wednesday to 45%. Expect them to raise it again.

Indeed, by the time you finish talking today we may already be in a recession.

Less than a week after President Trump’s declaration of the largest sales tax in U.S. history, global markets continue roil as a result of tariff-based recession fears. The President’s newly imposed tariffs have real world impacts for every one of my constituents, who will see higher prices at the grocery store, shortages of critical products, and less money in their retirement accounts and their accounts for their kids’ education.

American families deserve relief. But instead, thanks to President Trump, they’re heading to the store to panic-buy essentials before retailers raise prices.

I’ve heard from literally thousands of constituents about the pain that President Trump has said the country will suffer as a result of these tariffs.

They have written to me sharing that they have lost as much as 20% of their 401K and 529 accounts in the last week alone due to market fluctuations that are responding in real time, to the President’s announcement of arbitrary and capricious tariffs.

Seniors who recently retired are worried about having to return to work to make sure they can make ends meet and today and wonder if they will now outlive their retirement savings.

Small business owners in my district are anticipating having to lay off employees. Large companies in my district who are preparing their next earnings reports for investors are telling me that the impacts of these tariffs are “material.” That’s business speak for the tariffs are going to have a real, adverse effect on their operations and likely adverse affect their cash flows.

Make no mistake — President Trump’s trade agenda is slowing economic growth and job creation, weakening U.S. global leadership, and increasing the cost of doing business in the United States. These tariffs make life for Americans more expensive, make us our nation less secure, and our citizens less prosperous.

Congress must take back its constitutional authority to stop the chaos and the pain President Trump is inflicting on American families and dig us out of what could be a self-inflicted recession.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: SCHNEIDER, WAGNER HOST MOROCCO’S FOREIGN MINISTER FOR CONGRESSIONAL ROUNDTABLE ON REGIONAL PEACE AND INTEGRATION

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Brad Schneider (D-IL)

Washington, DC – Rep. Brad Schneider (IL-10), Co-Chair of the bipartisan, bicameral Abraham Accords Caucus, hosted His Excellency Nasser Bourita, Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Morocco for a closed-door roundtable with members of Congress on Tuesday, April 8. The discussion focused on Morocco’s growing role, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in advancing regional peace, economic integration, and security cooperation, particularly within the framework of the Abraham Accords.

The event was co-hosted by Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Ann Wagner (MO-2) and provided Members an opportunity to engage directly with one of the region’s most active and strategic diplomatic leaders.

“The U.S.-Morocco relationship is centuries old and has never been more relevant,” said Rep. Schneider. “From joint military exercises to trilateral cooperation with Israel, Morocco plays a vital role in advancing our shared interests in stability, prosperity, and peace. We were grateful for the chance to have an open and strategic dialogue with Foreign Minister Bourita about the opportunities and challenges facing the region.”

“The Kingdom of Morocco has been a vital partner with the United States in pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity in Africa and the Middle East,” said Rep. Wagner. “As co-chair of the Abraham Accords Caucus, I have worked to deepen the economic, diplomatic, and security relationships between the United States, Morocco, Israel, and Arab nations in the region as well as address Iran’s efforts to undermine and destabilize the historic normalization agreement.  Today’s roundtable with Foreign Minister Bourita advances those shared interests and I appreciated the Foreign Minister’s vital perspective on our efforts.”

Coming up on 5 years since Morocco established full ties with Israel and the US recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara, Members of Congress and the Foreign Minister discussed the future of the bilateral relationship, as well as the trilateral relationship with Israel.

The roundtable highlighted recent progress in the U.S.-Morocco-Israel trilateral dialogue, which serves as a platform for collaboration on issues such as trade, energy, water, and regional security. Members also discussed the deepening U.S.-Morocco bilateral relationship, which includes robust military, economic, and diplomatic cooperation.

Morocco’s hosting of African Lion, the largest annual joint military exercise on the African continent, was spotlighted as a key example of U.S.-Morocco defense partnership and multilateral coordination in North Africa.

Members also discussed US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, the evolving international diplomatic context, and the potential consequences for long-term regional stability.

The Abraham Accords Caucus is committed to advancing normalization, supporting U.S. diplomacy, and fostering long-term partnerships that contribute to peace, opportunity, and integration across the Middle East and North Africa.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Abraham Accords Caucus Introduces Resolution Promoting Peace and Tolerance in Education to Strengthen the Abraham Accords

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Brad Schneider (D-IL)

WASHINGTON – Reps. Brad Schneider (IL-10), Ann Wagner (MO-02), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), and Craig Goldman (TX-12), co-chairs of the bipartisan, bicameral Abraham Accords Caucus, introduced a resolution encouraging the U.S. Department of State and civil society to advance the goals of the Abraham Accords through education rooted in peace and tolerance.

The resolution recognizes the critical role that national curricula play in shaping the attitudes of future generations and commends countries like Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia for taking meaningful steps to promote respect and understanding in their educational systems. It urges the State Department to prioritize curriculum reform in bilateral dialogues and encourages continued engagement from civil society and international organizations in the region. The resolution also emphasizes the objectives of the bipartisan Israel Relations Normalization Act of 2021.

“The Abraham Accords are not just about diplomacy between governments—they are about building a shared future with stability, security and peace between peoples,” saidRep. Schneider. “The Accords offer the region a chance to break free from the gravity of history, to move beyond conflict and toward connection. That future depends on education rooted in peace, tolerance, and mutual recognition.”

“I am beyond proud of the work the Abraham Accords Caucus has accomplished in Congress, and I look forward to continuing to deepen and expand the relationships between Israel and its Arab neighbors,” said Rep. Wagner. “Violent extremist organizations, many of which are funded and promoted by Iran, must be addressed by fostering a coalition of like-minded nations pursuing peace, stability, and prosperity in the Middle East. This resolution encourages the State Department to proactively engage with regional countries to build new and stronger relationships that will enhance and entrench the Abraham Accords for years to come.”

“If we nourish civility and cooperation in schools, children are more likely to grow up in a world that treasures peace and acceptance,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “Encouraging and investing in those principles in classrooms throughout Abraham Accords countries is one critical way to do that.  As co-chair of the Abraham Accords Caucus, I’m proud to support these goals which can lead to a positive change throughout the region and lead to a safer world for all our children.”

“Continuing the important work of the Abraham Accords, this resolution highlights the critical need for educational reform across Middle Eastern nations,” said Rep. Goldman. “If left unaddressed, extreme, antisemitic, and hateful curricula will continue to fuel instability and violence in the region. Both Israel and its neighboring Arab states stand to benefit from fostering mutual respect and tolerance among the next generation of leaders.”

“Education rooted in peace and tolerance is essential for lasting regional stability,” added Marcus Sheff, CEO of IMPACT-se. “Textbooks that reflect positive values are not only something today’s children deserve—they craft the open and tolerant societies of the future that we all desire, shaping attitudes and beliefs of future generations. We commend the countries that have taken meaningful steps toward curriculum reform and urge others to follow. IMPACT-se is gratified that our research has helped highlight the critical link between education and normalization. We applaud the Abraham Accords Caucus co-chairs for advancing this important resolution and working toward our shared vision of strengthening the Abraham Accords by ensuring peace and tolerance education for all children.”

The text of the resolution is available here.

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steny H Hoyer (MD-05)

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today ahead of the United States’ talks with Iran:

“As the Trump Administration prepares to enter talks with Iran, it is crucial that we continue to pursue a permanent end to Iran’s nuclear capabilities and the complete dismantlement of its nuclear infrastructure. Whether through these negotiations or alternative means, achieving that objective is absolutely essential to preserving the security of America, our ally Israel, and the world.

“Any agreement must also end Iran’s malign activities throughout the region, including funding and providing strategic support to Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and its other terrorist proxies.  Additionally, the negotiations need to address Iran’s vast drone and ballistic missile arsenal. It is vital that we not allow Iran to use the negotiations to buy time and advance their nuclear program – especially with the window to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran closing imminently.

“For decades, Iran has posed a grave threat not only to the region but to the world. America ought to be prepared to do what it takes – diplomatically or otherwise – to achieve these goals and uphold our security.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ways and Means Democrats introduce bill to end tariff chaos, reclaim Congress’s trade authority

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (38th District of CA)

WASHINGTON – Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Linda T. Sánchez (D-Calif.), along with all Ways and Means Committee Democrats, today introduced the Stopping a Rogue President on Trade Act, a bill to end the constant chaos created by President Trump’s trade wars and reclaim Congress’s authority over tariffs.

Video of today’s bill introduction press conference is available HERE.

“President Trump’s reckless abuse of tariffs has sparked nothing but chaos,” said Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Sánchez. “American families have been anxiously bracing for rising costs and small businesses are worried they won’t survive the economic strain – all while the president flip-flops on tariffs at a whim, doing backroom deals and keeping negotiations out of the public eye. It’s time to end this madness. Congress must step in and take the trade keys away from our rogue president and protect the American people.”

“Over the years, Congress has entrusted more and more authority over trade to the Executive Branch, and recent events have made it clear we must reclaim that authority,” said Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-Mass.). “This president is willing to call anything an emergency to justify his every chaotic whim. The American people deserve better—they deserve stability and forethought. That’s why I’m proud to support Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Sánchez’s legislation that will deliver just that.”

The Stopping a Rogue President on Trade Act would:

    • Turn off the global tariffs imposed on April 2: The bill would permanently turn off the new baseline tariffs of 10 percent for all countries as well as the massive increases in tariffs for 60 trading partners, such as Europe, Israel, Japan, South Korea and Kenya. This would return most rates to the levels they were before the president’s tariff spree.

    • Turn off the tariffs imposed by executive order for Mexico and Canada: The president should not be able to use congressional trade authorities to extort our closest allies. If there are trade issues with those two countries, then there is a process in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that President Trump negotiated and Congress authorized.

    • Require congressional approval for all new tariffs: The Constitution gives Congress the authority over trade. Getting a vote on tariff actions should not be held hostage to political whim; votes would be treated as privileged measures that ensures that the American people get to have their say. Apolitical tariff actions – like trade remedies, safeguards and trade agreement dispute settlement – are already insulated from partisan abuse and would not require a congressional vote under the bill.

The bill is cosponsored by Representatives Richard Neal (D-Mass.), Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), John Larson (D-Conn.), Danny Davis (D-Ill.), Terri Sewell (D-Ala.), Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.), Judy Chu (D-Calif.), Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.), Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.), Don Beyer (D-Va.), Dwight Evans (D-Pa.), Brad Schneider (D-Ill.), Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.), Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.), Steven Horsford (D-Nev.), Stacey Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands), Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) and Adam Gray (D-Calif.).

  • MIL-OSI USA: Attorney General Bonta Appeals Age-Appropriate Design Code Act Decision

    Source: US State of California

    Friday, April 11, 2025

    Contact: (916) 210-6000, agpressoffice@doj.ca.gov

OAKLAND — California Attorney General Rob Bonta today appealed the Northern District of California’s decision to block enforcement of the Age-Appropriate Design Code Act, in response to a lawsuit brought by an online trade association representing companies such as Google, Meta, Amazon, and Twitter.

“We are deeply concerned about further delay in implementing protections for children online. That is why, today, my office has appealed the Northern District of California’s decision blocking enforcement of the Age-Appropriate Design Code,” said Attorney General Rob Bonta. “I am committed to making social media safer for children by defending California’s commonsense statutes — our kids’ safety cannot wait.”

“Every parent knows that our children are exposed to too much harm online, and they are demanding that tech companies take more responsibility for their actions,” said Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland). “The court’s ruling was a gut punch to families across California, but I’m incredibly grateful to Attorney General Bonta for stepping up and fighting back. His decision to appeal sends a clear message: we won’t let tech giants put profits over the safety of our children. I’m more committed than ever to this fight — and I won’t back down until real protections are in place.”

The California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act is a first-in-the-nation law aimed at safeguarding children online. The act requires that businesses that trade in consumers’ personal information and offer products, services, and features likely to be accessed by children proactively protect their young users’ information and prohibits certain actions that involve the collection and use of that information.

Authored by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) and Assemblymember Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo), the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 15, 2022. The Legislature unanimously passed the law, finding that more needs to be done to create a safer online space for children to learn, explore, and play. Despite businesses’ awareness that children use their services, businesses currently design their online services to include features that may be harmful to children, including manipulative techniques to prod them to spend hours on end online or provide personal information beyond what is expected or necessary.

A copy of the notice of appeal can be found here.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Q&A: First 100 Days

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Iowa Chuck Grassley

Q: What was on the front burner during the first 100 days of the 119th Congress?

A:  Congress hit the ground running on January 3 when it opened for business. After committee assignments were adopted, I resumed the helm of the Senate Judiciary Committee and leadership position as Senate President pro tempore. The to-do list on the Senate agenda was shaped by the mandate of the November presidential election. Americans voted for border security, safer streets, lower cost of living and a stronger economy. Processing the nominees to serve on the president’s cabinet was among the top priorities of the first 100 days in Congress. The Senate has the constitutional authority of “advise and consent” in our system of checks and balances. Nominees for the federal judiciary and senior-level positions throughout the executive branch undergo a rigorous background check and vetting process to examine their credentials and qualifications to uphold the public trust. I chaired confirmation hearings for Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel, as well as other top leaders for the Department of Justice. During the previous administration, I exposed the weaponization of our government  that created a two-tiered system of justice. I’m committed to help restore public trust in our institutions of government and that includes robust oversight to hold government and wrongdoers accountable.

The pace by which the Senate processed cabinet nominations underscores the commitment to get the election mandate in motion. In 18 days, the Senate confirmed 13 cabinet officials, reflecting support to get the president’s team in place to implement his agenda. At the top of the list was border security. Since day one of the 47th president’s second term in office, the Trump administration has kept its promise to enforce our nation’s immigration laws and restore U.S. sovereignty at our borders. Compared to the Biden administration, nationwide border encounters dropped drastically. As the president said at his joint address to Congress in March, “all we really needed was a new president.” What’s more, the first piece of legislation Congress sent to the president’s desk was the Laken Riley Act, a bipartisan bill that included Sarah’s Law, named after an Iowan killed by an illegal immigrant driving drunk. I’m also pleased the Senate approved my bipartisan bill called the HALT Fentanyl Act that would permanently schedule deadly fentanyl-related substances created by the cartels to skirt U.S. law. This bill would give law enforcement the tools it needs to keep deadly fentanyl off our streets. Republicans have swiftly delivered on our promise to restore law and order and make America’s streets safer.

Q: What else does Congress have to show for its work in the first 100 days?

A:  For starters, I’m glad the Senate has resumed a five-day work schedule, after a long hiatus in recent years, and continued in legislative session for 10 consecutive weeks starting in January. That’s what Iowans expect elected representatives to be doing. That’s how the schedule operated when I first came to the Senate. Many times, I urged then-Senate Majority Leader Schumer to keep the Senate in session five days a week, instead of the sleepy schedule he led during the Biden administration. That light work schedule was a disservice to the American people and contributed to year-end, massive spending packages. Congress must return to regular order and legislate 12 annual appropriations bills in their respective committees. This allows members of Congress to more closely scrutinize every line of spending and offer amendments. Americans deserve better than crisis-to-crisis legislating. As a taxpayer watchdog, I’ve continued to lead efforts to root out Pentagon mismanagement and wasteful spending across the federal government, such as tackling improper Supplemental Security Income payments, continuing my oversight of the EPA, and demanding answers about alleged fraudulent Medicare billing practices.  I also published a committee report of my investigative findings shining light on the full scope of the Obama-Biden State Department’s pervasive obstruction of FBI law enforcement efforts before, during and after the Iran Nuclear Deal negotiations.

In addition, the Senate Judiciary Committee has convened 15 hearings in the first 100 days. Among the policies we’ve examined include the Freedom of Information Act; children’s safety in the digital era; legislative solutions to fix universal injunctions; and, the rise in antisemitism in America. I also steered six bipartisan bills through the committee to rein in anticompetitive practices in the pharmaceutical industry to help lower drug prices. When the Senate’s not in session, I return home to Iowa every chance I get to keep in touch with my constituents. In March, I kicked off my 45th annual 99 county meetings, holding a dozen question-and-answer sessions with Iowans. Looking ahead, Congress has a full plate of unfinished business to digest in the coming months, including passing a five-year farm bill,  extending rural hospital support programs and telehealth, preventing the largest tax hike in U.S. history and funding the government through a timely and transparent process.

BEIJING, April 11 — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Beijing on Friday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that in the face of rising unilateralism, power politics and bullying, the international community must present a unified voice.

Otherwise, Wang warned, the world will fall back into the law of the jungle, and most small and medium-sized countries will bear the brunt.

He said that the original intention of the United Nations (UN) was to maintain a just international order and safeguard the sovereign equality of all countries, so it should take the lead to make its position clear and play its due role.

As an important member of the UN system, the IAEA shoulders the important mission of safeguarding the basic norms governing international relations, promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and preventing nuclear proliferation, Wang said.

He said China hopes that the IAEA will continue to uphold objectivity, neutrality and professionalism in properly handling issues such as the Iranian nuclear issue, U.S.-Britain-Australia nuclear submarine cooperation, and the ocean discharge of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water.

Grossi said that China is a force for stability in a volatile world since it firmly supports the status and role of the UN and its agencies.

The IAEA attaches importance to cooperation with China and appreciates China’s achievements in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, Grossi said, expressing willingness to deepen cooperation with China in an all-round way and properly handle the Iranian nuclear issue and other relevant hotspot issues.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Booker, Kim Urge Trump Administration to Investigate Fatal Shooting of New Jersey Teen in the West Bank

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New Jersey Cory Booker

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Andy Kim (D-NJ) sent a letter to President Trump urging his administration to seek answers and conduct a U.S.-led investigation into the fatal shooting of Amer Rabee, a 14-year-old New Jerseyan. Two other American citizens were also injured in the incident, including 14-year-old Ayoub Ijbara and 15-year-old Abdulrahman Shihada. Ayoub Ijbara was born in New Jersey and is reported to be in critical condition.

“As New Jersey’s Senators, we are calling for a thorough and transparent accounting of the facts and circumstances around Amer Rabee’s death and the actions of Israeli security forces. We appreciate the difficult and dynamic nature of the situation, but also underscore our expectation that such an inquiry is possible and should be pursued when an American has died. As a result, we urge your administration to conduct a timely, independent and transparent investigation into Amer Rabee’s death as well as Ayoub Ijbara and Abdulrahman Shihada’s injuries,” the Senators wrote.

The lawmakers expressed that many of their constituents in New Jersey have connections to Turmus Ayya, a town in the West Bank with a large Palestinian American community, and have been personally impacted by this devastating event and the rise in violence in the West Bank that has occurred in recent years.

“We urge your administration to raise this case at the highest levels during meetings with counterparts in the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority and press for full cooperation with a U.S.-led investigation. Furthermore, we urge the State Department to quickly dispatch embassy officials to visit the Rabee and Ijbara families and ensure that they have all support they need during this difficult time, including urgent medical support for Ayoub,” the Senators continued.

“As we continue the work of keeping Americans safe, here at home and around the world, the U.S. must do all it can to seek answers and accountability when Americans are injured or killed,” the Senators concluded.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Chairman Mills Delivers Opening Remarks at Hearing on Biden Administration’s Far-Left Foreign Policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Oversight and Intelligence Subcommittee Chairman Cory Mills (FL-07) delivered opening remarks at a full subcommittee hearing titled, “Deficient, Enfeebled, and Ineffective: The Consequences of the Biden Administration’s Far-Left Priorities on U.S. Foreign Policy.”

    Remarks

Good afternoon and welcome to the first hearing of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Intelligence in the 119th Congress.

As we start the new Congress, I am looking forward to working with my colleagues to deliver real results for the American people by advancing President Trump’s America first policy’s and agenda.

Over the next few months, through our State Department reauthorization deliberations, this subcommittee will work to identify areas of the Secretary’s Office, or the “S Bureau,” that must be reformed and reprogrammed to reorient the United States as a leader on the world stage while ensuring that taxpayer dollars are effectively used to bolster U.S. national security efforts.

For far too long, the State Department prioritized radical liberal political ideologies and woke policies over advancing diplomatic objectives that serve American interests and protect the American people from our adversaries.

While the Biden Administration was trying to figure out what pronouns to use, our adversaries grew stronger and more emboldened.

China aggressively enforced unlawful territorial claims in the South China Sea and has undermined the United States and our allies at every turn. Russia invaded Ukraine. North Korea ramped up its military provocations. Iran advanced its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program, empowering its proxies to now cause chaos throughout the Middle East. Israel was attacked and global shipping routes in the Red Sea were blocked.

Over the last four years, among others, the American people watched these foreign policy failures unfold and voted for real change and action on November 5th. The American people gave President Trump and the Republican-led Congress a mandate to reverse the damage and restore common sense to the federal government.

Today, this subcommittee will take its first step to deliver on this mandate by examining the State Department’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion detrimentally influenced operations across the Department by: making DEI a “core precept” for promotion consideration within the ranks of the Foreign Service; granting passport applications the ability to select “X” as a gender; and using taxpayer dollars to fund numerous woke projects, including “commemorating black consciousness month with an event in which employees learned about the inclusion Afro-Brazilian culture through music and LGBTQI+ culture through Vogue dance” in Brazil.

These policies corrupted the core mission of the State Department and we must restore unity and fundamental American principles to the Department, eliminate wasteful spending, and ensure that President Trump’s Executive Orders are fully implemented, not subverted by rebranding DEI-driven programs. It is our duty to ensure that America becomes safer, stronger, and more prosperous.

I want to thank our witnesses for appearing before the subcommittee today.

I look forward to a productive discussion on how we can enhance America’s security through common sense policies and responsible leadership.

MADISON, WI – Today, Congressman Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05) and his House Judiciary Committee Republican colleagues held a press conference on the Madison campus of the University of Wisconsin following a roundtable discussion on the antitrust issues facing the NCAA.

The press conference highlighted the current landscape around antitrust liability for the NCAA, which has created issues around name, image, and likeness (NIL) payments, the transfer portal, and eligibility rules in college athletics.

“It was great to be on the ground in Madison with my Judiciary colleagues to further the discussion on antitrust concerns that are reshaping the structure and future of college athletics,” said Congressman Fitzgerald. “We heard directly from NCAA leadership, student-athletes, coaches, and university stakeholders about the challenges and unintended consequences stemming from how antitrust laws are currently affecting the structure and oversight of college athletics. Hearing from those most impacted is essential as we consider potential legislative solutions that preserve fairness in the evolving model of college sports.”
