    External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing as part of a delegation of foreign ministers attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting.

    In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Called on President Xi Jinping this morning in Beijing along with my fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Apprised President Xi of the recent development of our bilateral ties. Value the guidance of our leaders in that regard.”

    This marks Jaishankar’s first visit to China since the Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops in June 2020. He is in the country to participate in the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (CFM), being held in Tianjin.

    On Monday, Jaishankar held a series of high-level meetings on the sidelines of the CFM.

    According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Jaishankar met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for bilateral talks.

    The two leaders reviewed the current state of India-China ties, acknowledging recent progress in stabilizing and rebuilding relations. Both sides emphasized the importance of people-centric engagement and agreed to enhance cooperation to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

    Jaishankar expressed appreciation for China’s support in resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and discussed expanding people-to-people exchanges, including improved travel access and direct flight connectivity.

    Stressing the need for peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to de-escalation and effective border management.

    “He underlined the need for cooperation on trans-border rivers, including resumption of provision of hydrological data by the Chinese side. He also took up restrictive trade measures and roadblocks to economic cooperation,” the MEA said in a statement.

    The two ministers also exchanged views on regional and global developments, with Jaishankar affirming India’s support for China’s current SCO presidency.

    “The discussions were constructive and forward-looking. The Ministers agreed to remain in touch, including through bilateral visits and meetings,” the MEA said.

    Earlier in the day, Jaishankar called on Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and met Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China.

    “Good to meet IDCPC Minister Liu Jianchao in Beijing. Discussed the changing global order and the emergence of multipolarity. Spoke about a constructive India-China relationship in that context,” Jaishankar said on X.

    Founded as a regional security bloc, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a permanent intergovernmental organisation comprising India, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Iran and Belarus. The SCO’s agenda spans counterterrorism, security, economic cooperation, and regional connectivity.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid homage to K. Kamaraj on his birth anniversary.

    In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Paying homage to Thiru K. Kamaraj Ji on his birth anniversary. He was at the forefront of India’s freedom struggle and provided invaluable leadership in the formative years of our journey after Independence. His noble ideals and emphasis on social justice inspire us all greatly.”

    Kumaraswami Kamaraj was born in Tamil Nadu on July 15, 1903. He was elected unopposed to the Madras Legislative Assembly in 1937 and re-elected in 1946. That same year, he was also elected to the Constituent Assembly of India and later to Parliament in 1952.

    Kamaraj became the Chief Minister of Madras in 1954. In 1963, he proposed to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru that senior Congress leaders should resign from ministerial posts to focus on strengthening the party organisation. This initiative became known as the ‘Kamaraj Plan.’

    In recognition of his service to the nation, he was posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna in 1976.

  • Amarnath Yatra: Over 2.20 lakh devotees have darshan in 12 days

    Another batch of 6,388 pilgrims departed from Jammu on Tuesday for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, as the total number of devotees who have had ‘darshan’ at the holy cave shrine crossed 2.20 lakh in just 12 days since the pilgrimage began.

    “More than 2.20 lakh yatris have so far performed the Amarnath Yatra since it commenced on July 3,” an official said.

    On Tuesday morning, a fresh group of pilgrims left the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu in two escorted convoys bound for the Kashmir Valley. The first convoy, comprising 103 vehicles and carrying 2,501 pilgrims, departed at 3:26 a.m. for the Baltal base camp. The second convoy, with 145 vehicles and 3,887 pilgrims, left at 4:15 a.m. for the Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp.

    The India Meteorological Department has predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall across Jammu & Kashmir over the next 24 hours. Authorities confirmed that the movement of pilgrims from the Baltal and Nunwan base camps toward the holy cave would depend on prevailing weather conditions.

    On July 10, the Bhumi Pujan of the sacred Chhari Mubarak (Lord Shiva’s holy mace) was performed at Pahalgam. The Chhari Mubarak was brought to Pahalgam from its seat at the Dashnami Akhara Building in Srinagar by a group of seers led by its sole custodian, Mahant Swami Deependra Giri. The ceremonial mace was then taken to the Gauri Shankar Temple, where the rituals were conducted. The Chhari Mubarak will reach the holy cave shrine on August 9, marking the official conclusion of the Yatra.

    In light of heightened security concerns, particularly after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, authorities have implemented a robust multi-tier security system for this year’s pilgrimage.

    An additional 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been deployed to bolster the existing security framework, which includes the Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB, and local police. The Army has launched ‘Operation SHIVA 2025’, deploying over 8,500 troops equipped with advanced surveillance and combat technology.

    All transit camps along the route to the base camps and the entire stretch from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas to the cave shrine have been placed under heavy security cover.

    This year, the Amarnath Yatra began on July 3 and will conclude on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan, spanning a total of 38 days.

    Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, on Monday addressed the 63rd Foundation Day celebration of the Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP) in New Delhi, praising the organisation for its six-decade-long contribution to national development and social service. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including retired Supreme Court Judge and National President of the Parishad, Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel.

    Describing BVP as a living embodiment of India’s civilisational ethos, Shah said the organisation has effectively connected “service with organisation, organisation with values, and values with nation-building.” Inspired by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, BVP has, according to Shah, helped mobilise society’s creative energy through its core principles of dedication (Samarpan), organisation (Sangathan), and values (Sanskar).

    “An institution that works tirelessly for 63 years doesn’t just survive—it thrives on the dedication of countless volunteers. While 63 years may be old in a person’s life, for a service-driven institution like BVP, it marks youthful vibrance,” Shah remarked.

    Shah also honoured the legacy of freedom fighter Hemam Nilamani Singh from Manipur, who was posthumously recognised at the event. Singh, inspired by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, joined the Indian National Army in 1944 and devoted his life to education, service, and linguistic unity.

    Highlighting the reach of BVP, Shah noted that the organisation operates more than 1,600 branches across 412 districts and engages over 84,000 families. BVP has actively contributed to disaster relief, blood donation drives, rural education camps, and moral value-building initiatives in schools across the country.

    Turning to national development, Shah said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has envisioned a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047 and laid out five foundational goals: economic progress, freedom from mental and cultural slavery, pride in India’s heritage, unity and solidarity, and a sense of civic duty. “The Bharat Vikas Parishad has worked silently but powerfully toward these goals for years,” Shah said.

    He highlighted achievements from the last 11 years of Modi’s tenure: the opening of over 55 crore bank accounts, the provision of safe drinking water to 15 crore households, construction of toilets in 12 crore homes, distribution of gas cylinders to 10 crore families, and the building of over 4 crore homes for the poor. He also emphasized the empowerment of women through initiatives like Lakhpati Didi and Mudra Yojana, where two-thirds of the loan beneficiaries are women.

    Shah pointed to the government’s efforts to decolonize national symbols and reclaim India’s heritage. From renaming Rajpath to Kartavya Path to replacing colonial insignia in the Indian Navy with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s sword, he said these moves inspire national pride. Other symbolic actions include renaming islands in Andaman-Nicobar as Subhash Dweep and Shaheed Dweep, and Race Course Road as Lok Kalyan Marg.

    “Prime Minister Modi has shown how heritage and development can progress hand-in-hand,” said Shah. “While he built the Ram Temple, he also rolled out 5G and expanded digital payments to every corner of the country—even to vegetable vendors.”

    He also highlighted simultaneous progress in education and technology, citing the New Education Policy’s focus on mother-tongue instruction, and the expansion of premier institutes like IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS. India, he said, is emerging as a leader in AI, cybersecurity, drones, and green hydrogen. He connected this progress with national pride initiatives like the establishment of the Sengol in Parliament and the international promotion of Yoga.

    U.S. President Donald Trump announced new weapons for Ukraine on Monday, and threatened sanctions on buyers of Russian exports unless Russia agrees a peace deal, a major policy shift brought on by frustration with Moscow’s ongoing attacks on its neighbour.

    But Trump’s threat of sanctions came with a 50-day grace period, a move that was welcomed by investors in Russia where the rouble recovered from earlier losses and stock markets rose.

    Sitting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office, Trump told reporters he was disappointed in Russian President Vladimir Putin and that billions of dollars of U.S. weapons would go to Ukraine.

    “We’re going to make top-of-the-line weapons, and they’ll be sent to NATO,” Trump said, adding that Washington’s NATO allies would pay for them.

    The weapons would include Patriot air defence missiles Ukraine has urgently sought, he said.

    “It’s a full complement with the batteries,” Trump said. “We’re going to have some come very soon, within days.”

    “We have one country that has 17 Patriots getting ready to be shipped … we’re going to work a deal where the 17 will go or a big portion of the 17 will go to the war site.”

    Rutte said Germany, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Canada all wanted to be a part of rearming Ukraine.

    Trump’s threat to impose so-called secondary sanctions on Russia, if carried out, would be a major shift in Western sanctions policy. Lawmakers from both U.S. political parties are pushing for a bill that would authorise such measures, targeting other countries that buy Russian oil.

    Throughout the more than three-year-old war, Western countries have cut most of their own financial ties to Moscow, but have held back from taking steps that would restrict Russia from selling its oil elsewhere. That has allowed Moscow to continue earning hundreds of billions of dollars from shipping oil to buyers such as China and India.

    “We’re going to be doing secondary tariffs,” Trump said. “If we don’t have a deal in 50 days, it’s very simple, and they’ll be at 100%.”

    A White House official said Trump was referring to 100% tariffs on Russian goods as well as secondary sanctions on other countries that buy its exports. Eighty-five of the 100 U.S. senators are co-sponsoring a bill that would give Trump the authority to impose 500% tariffs on any country that helps Russia, but the chamber’s Republican leaders have been waiting for Trump to give them the go-ahead for a vote.

    Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Telegram he had spoken to Trump and “thanked him for his readiness to support Ukraine and to continue working together to stop the killings and establish a lasting and just peace.”

    Zelenskiy held talks with Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg on Monday.

    In Kyiv, people welcomed Trump’s announcement but some were cautious about his intentions.

    “I am pleased that finally European politicians, with their patience and convictions, have slightly swayed him (Trump) to our side, because from the very beginning it was clear that he did not really want to help us,” said Denys Podilchuk, a 39-year-old dentist in Kyiv.

    GRACE PERIOD

    Artyom Nikolayev, an analyst from financial information firm Invest Era, said Trump did not go as far as Russian markets had feared.

    “Trump performed below market expectations. He gave 50 days during which the Russian leadership can come up with something and extend the negotiation track. Moreover, Trump likes to postpone and extend such deadlines,” he said.

    Asked about Trump’s remarks, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said an immediate ceasefire was needed to pave the way for a political solution and “whatever can contribute to these objectives will, of course, be important if it is done in line with international law.”

    Since returning to the White House promising a quick end to the war, Trump has sought rapprochement with Moscow, speaking several times with Putin. His administration has pulled back from pro-Ukrainian policies such as backing Kyiv’s membership in NATO and demanding Russia withdraw from all Ukrainian territory.

    But Putin has yet to accept a proposal from Trump for an unconditional ceasefire, which was quickly endorsed by Kyiv. Recent days have seen Russia use hundreds of drones to attack Ukrainian cities.

    Trump said his shift was motivated by frustration with Putin.

    “We actually had probably four times a deal. And then the deal wouldn’t happen because bombs would be thrown out that night and you’d say we’re not making any deals,” he said.

    Last week he said, “We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin.”

    Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and holds about one-fifth of Ukraine. Its forces are slowly advancing in eastern Ukraine and Moscow shows no sign of abandoning its main war goals.

    Evelyn Farkas, a former senior Pentagon official who is now executive director of the McCain Institute, said Trump’s moves could eventually turn the tide of the war if Trump ratchets up enforcement of current sanctions, adds new ones and provides new equipment quickly.

    “If Putin’s ministers and generals can be convinced that the war is not winnable they may be willing to push Putin to negotiate, if nothing else but to buy time,” said Farkas.

  • Shubhanshu Shukla set to return to Earth today with a splashdown off the California coast.

    Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian to reach the International Space Station (ISS), is set to return to Earth on Tuesday, marking the end of a historic mission under Axiom Space’s Ax-4 program.

    After an extraordinary 18-day stay aboard the orbital laboratory, Shukla and his three international crewmates are scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California at 3:01 p.m. IST (4:31 AM CT).

    Shukla, along with fellow astronauts Peggy Whitson (USA), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary), boarded SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft “Grace” at 3:30 a.m. CT (2 PM IST) on Monday. The spacecraft undocked from the ISS’s Harmony module at 7:15 a.m. ET (4:45 p.m. IST).

    NASA confirmed the hatch closure occurred at 5:07 a.m. EDT, and SpaceX announced “Dragon separation confirmed” shortly afterward via its official X account. “Dragon is GO to undock from the Space Station,” SpaceX said in a post on X. “Dragon separation confirmed!” the post added.

    This marks the completion of a nearly 23-hour return journey. Upon splashdown, the crew will be retrieved by recovery teams and Shukla will then begin a 7-day rehabilitation protocol to readjust to Earth’s gravity after spending over two weeks in microgravity.

    Shukla’s mission originally spanned 14 days but was extended to 18, allowing for additional scientific research and collaborative work aboard the station. His participation in the Ax-4 mission makes him only the second Indian astronaut to travel to space, following Rakesh Sharma’s legendary mission in 1984.

    In a touching farewell message from orbit, Shukla described his experience as “an incredible journey,” expressing deep gratitude to ISRO, NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX. “India still looks better than the whole world,” he remarked, gazing down from the cupola of the ISS.

    Shukla’s return today is a proud moment for India and a significant step in the country’s growing presence in global space exploration. (IANS)

  • Centenarian marathon runner Fauja Singh dies in a road accident in Punjab

    Centenarian long-distance runner Fauja Singh, widely recognised as the world’s oldest marathon runner, has died at the age of 114 in a road accident at Beas Pind near Jalandhar in Punjab. According to reports, the Indian-British Sikh marathon runner of Punjabi descent was hit by an unidentified vehicle when he was crossing the road in his native village.

    An officer of the Jalandhar rural police told the media that they were informed about the accident by one of Fauja Singh’s relatives. “We have been told that he was hit by a vehicle while trying to cross the road. We have set up a team and are investigating,” said a police official who claimed the vehicle that caused the accident was probably a car.

    A global icon of strength and willpower, Fauja Singh has inspired millions by running marathons past 100. He took up marathon running late in life and has reportedly completed over 100 marathons.

    Born in the undivided Punjab at Beas Pind near Jalandhar on April 1, 1911, Fauja Singh started running as a means to overcome his grief after witnessing the death of his fifth son in a construction accident in 1994.

    Having emigrated to England in the 1990s, Fauja Singh took running in international competitions at the age of 89 and soon started taking part in International marathons. Settled in Ilford with one of his sons, Fauja Singh, soon became renowned worldwide as he set many records in the 90-plus age category.

    Besides the marathon, he would participate in many long-distance running disciplines in the Masters’ category. At the age of 100, he accomplished eight world age group records in one day at the special Ontario Masters Association Fauja Singh Invitational Meet, held at Birchmount Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

    His biography, titled Turbaned Tornado, was formally released in the Attlee Room of Britain’s House of Lords on July 7, 2011. He was one of the torchbearers for the London Olympics in 2012 and was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2015 New Year Honours for services to sport and charity. (IANS)

    England captain Ben Stokes was named player of the match after taking five wickets in his team’s dramatic 22-run victory over India in the third test at Lord’s as well as scoring 44 and 33 and running out the dangerous Rishabh Pant in a splendid all-round performance.

    Stokes, 34, underwent a successful operation on as torn hamstring in December followed by a rigorous physical fitness programme during which he lost 10 kilograms in weight.

    On Sunday he showed he was back to his best with the ball, knocking nightwatchman Akash Deep’s off stump out of the ground as England captured three wickets in the final 30 minutes with India chasing 193 to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

    He resumed the attack from the Nursery End in Monday’s morning session, bounding in for 80 minutes and capturing the key wicket of KL Rahul with a delivery which swung in late to trap the Indian opener for 39 after winning a review when his impassioned appeal was turned down.

    The television review showed the ball would have crashed into the leg stump and he continued to bowl at speeds consistently in excess of 85 miles an hour before handing the ball to Chris Woakes for the final 20 minutes of the morning session.

    An obdurate ninth-wicket stand between Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, cheered vociferously by the Indian supporters in a packed Lord’s, frustrated England for most of the afternoon before Stokes had Bumrah caught skying a hook to mid-on.

    He finished with three for 46 from 24 overs, the most bowled by any England bowler, and switched his fielders constantly before racing to embrace his team mates when last man Mohammed Siraj played the ball on to his stumps.

    “I’ve taken myself to some pretty dark places,” Stoke said after the match concluded in bright sunshine before a capacity crowd at the home of cricket.

    “But if bowling for your country to a test match win doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what does. I was cooked yesterday but nothing was stopping me. I’m an all-rounder, I get four opportunities to influence the game.”

    “I’d like to score more runs but you don’t have a chance to worry about anything. Now I’m going to be looking forward to lying in my bed for four days.”

  • Centre to issue new guidelines to promote first-time exporters: Piyush Goyal

    The government will soon issue new guidelines on how to promote new markets, new products, and new exporters, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Monday. He added that the Ministry and districts can work together to promote One District One Product (ODOP) items in newer markets and support first-time exporters.

    He said the Commerce Ministry will collaborate with districts to help first-time exporters reach new markets.

    Goyal highlighted that 773 districts across various states have contributed to India’s success story.

    “India is like an oasis in a desert in a tumultuous world and is the fastest-growing large economy in the world today,” said the minister, adding that India is set to become the third-largest economy in 2027.

    He noted that India’s diverse products have the potential to reach global markets.

    Goyal cited examples such as Wayanad’s coffee, Ratnagiri mangoes, and saffron from Pulwama, saying these illustrate the wide range of products that can take India’s name worldwide.

    He emphasised that One District One Product is a unique initiative, unmatched by any other country. “Each district brings a different kind of legacy,” he said.

    Goyal also mentioned that sometimes two products must be recognised under ODOP and stressed that local products are now going global.

    The minister said that 64 out of 87 products are covered under the Industrial Investment Promotion Policy. He informed that all 38 districts of Bihar have achieved 100 per cent coverage of products under ODOP, and the state has prioritised the initiative.

    Goyal stated that all these products are integrated into the state’s economic system and included in the industrial policy. Bihar has been categorised as Category A in this regard. He urged everyone to take a pledge to make ODOP a driving force for prosperity in their districts through their unique products.

  • Over 6.6 crore electors in Bihar included in draft electoral roll; ECI steps up efforts with 11 days left

    With just 11 days remaining for the last date of submission of Enumeration Forms (EFs) under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has collected EFs from over 6.6 crore electors so far.

    According to official figures, out of Bihar’s total 7,89,69,844 electors, EFs of 6,60,67,208 voters—amounting to 83.66%—have been received after two rounds of door-to-door visits by Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

    So far, about 1.59% of electors have been found deceased, 2.2% have permanently shifted, and 0.73% were found enrolled at more than one location. This means that 88.18% of electors have either submitted their forms, been confirmed deceased, or have shifted residence.

    Only about 11.82% of electors now remain to submit their forms. Many among them have sought additional time to complete and submit their EFs with supporting documents in the coming days.

    The ECI has directed nearly one lakh BLOs to begin a third round of door-to-door visits to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the draft Electoral Roll. Their efforts are being supported by around 1.5 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by political parties, with each BLA permitted to certify and submit up to 50 forms daily.

    To strengthen urban voter enrollment, special camps are being organised across all 5,683 wards under the 261 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of Bihar.

    For electors who may have temporarily migrated out of Bihar, the Commission has stepped up outreach through newspaper advertisements and direct contact to help them submit their forms on time. Such electors can also submit EFs online using their mobile phones via the ECINet App or the official website (https://voters.eci.gov.in). They may also send completed forms to the concerned BLO through family members, WhatsApp, or other online modes.

    The newly launched ECINet platform, which integrates 40 previous ECI applications into a single portal, is playing a key role in the Bihar SIR. It enables electors to submit forms online, check names in the 2003 Electoral Roll where needed, and directly connect with election officials, including BLOs.

    As of 6 PM today, over 5.74 crore Enumeration Forms have been uploaded through ECINet. Its document review module has also accelerated the verification of electors’ eligibility by Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), and District Election Officers (DEOs).

    The draft Electoral Roll for Bihar will be published on August 1, 2025. The ECI has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral process.

    The Chief Minister also informed the Prime Minister about the achievements under the Jal Jeevan Mission and discussed the current status of the scheme in the state.

    CM Dhami urged the Prime Minister to consider extending the Delhi–Meerut (Modipuram) Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) up to Haridwar and Rishikesh. He also requested financial assistance of ₹3,500 crore for the successful organisation of the Haridwar Kumbh 2027 and ₹400 crore for the smooth conduct of the Nanda Raj Jat Yatra in 2026.

    He sought the Prime Minister’s support for including the river-linking project under a special scheme and requested directions to the concerned ministry for CSR funding for the Haridwar–Rishikesh Ganga Corridor and Sharda Corridor projects. The Chief Minister also requested the Prime Minister to approve five previously recommended hydropower projects and sought support for setting up a semiconductor industry at NEPA Farm in Udham Singh Nagar district.

    The Chief Minister further requested the Prime Minister’s intervention to approve the ₹1,015.11 crore DPR under the RDSS scheme for undergrounding HT/LT lines and automating the power system in Rishikesh and Haridwar to enhance their aesthetic appeal. He also urged for the necessary clearances from the National Board for Wildlife’s Standing Committee to restore and develop Chaurasi Kutiya in Rishikesh.

    Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Mizoram Lalduhoma also called on Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi today. During the meeting, Chief Minister Lalduhoma discussed key development issues pertaining to Mizoram and sought the Centre’s continued support for the state’s progress.

The Chief Minister also requested the Prime Minister to approve five previously recommended hydropower projects and sought support for setting up a semiconductor industry at NEPA Farm in Udham Singh Nagar district.

    The Chief Minister further requested the Prime Minister’s intervention to approve the ₹1,015.11 crore DPR under the RDSS scheme for undergrounding HT/LT lines and automating the power system in Rishikesh and Haridwar to enhance their aesthetic appeal. He also urged for the necessary clearances from the National Board for Wildlife’s Standing Committee to restore and develop Chaurasi Kutiya in Rishikesh.

    Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Mizoram Lalduhoma also called on Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi today. During the meeting, Chief Minister Lalduhoma discussed key development issues pertaining to Mizoram and sought the Centre’s continued support for the state’s progress.

    A day ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (CFM) in Tianjin, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Monday stated that the “primary mandate” of the grouping is to “combat terrorism, separatism and extremism”.

    “Tomorrow, we will be meeting in the format of the SCO, whose primary mandate is to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism. This is a shared concern and India hopes that zero tolerance for terrorism will be strongly upheld,” the EAM said in his opening remarks during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday.

    Last month, the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting held at Qingdao could not adopt a Joint Statement after India’s concerns on terrorism did not reflect in the document.

    Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who had attended the meeting, had laid down the broad contours of India’s transitional shift in its policy against terrorism and had also called upon the member countries to unite in eliminating the menace for collective safety and security.

    “I understand that they could not adopt a Joint Statement. I also understand that member countries could not reach consensus on certain issues and hence the document could not be finalised. On our side, India wanted concerns on terrorism reflected in the document, which was not acceptable to one particular country, and therefore the statement was not adopted,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said during a regular media briefing held in New Delhi on June 26.

    On June 24, while spotlighting the barbaric Pahalgam terror attack and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor to dismantle terror infrastructure across the border, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had also called for the urgent need to shun double standards in the fight against terrorism and take decisive actions against UN-proscribed terrorists and entities.

    Addressing the 20th meeting of the Security Council Secretaries of the SCO Member States in Beijing, NSA Doval had said that India is deeply concerned about continued threat from terror groups designated by United Nations Security Council (UNSC), including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) — two of the most dangerous and state-supported terror outfits operating out of Pakistan – besides Al Qaeda, ISIS and its affiliates.

    In his intervention, he highlighted the need to shun double standards in the fight against terrorism and take decisive actions against UN-proscribed terrorists and entities like LeT, JeM and their proxies and dismantle their terror eco-systems.

    Reiterating that any act of terror including cross border terrorism is a crime against humanity, India had called on SCO members to hold accountable the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of acts of cross border terror and to help bring them to justice.

    During his visit, NSA Doval had also held discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi who is also a Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Since our leaders’ meeting in Kazan in October 2024, the India-China relationship has been gradually moving in a positive direction. Our responsibility is to maintain that momentum,” Jaishankar said in his opening remarks during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

    He added, “We have made good progress in the past nine months towards the normalization of our bilateral relations. This is a result of resolving friction along the border and our ability to maintain peace and tranquillity there. This remains the fundamental basis for mutual strategic trust and for the smooth development of bilateral relations. It is now incumbent upon us to address other aspects related to the border, including de-escalation.”

    The EAM is currently in China — his first visit to the country since the violent confrontation in the Galwan Valley in May 2020 — to attend the SCO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting being held in Tianjin.

    Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, currently on a three-day visit to the UAE as part of his Dubai-Spain tour from July 13–19, is making strong headway in attracting international investments. His meetings with UAE officials and global investors have already yielded substantial commitments.

    On the second day of his Dubai visit, Dr. Yadav held in-depth talks with UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Dr. Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, focusing on investment prospects under the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and the I2U2 collaboration. He outlined Madhya Pradesh’s strengths, including its industrial infrastructure, supportive policies, and investor-friendly environment across sectors such as electric vehicles, textiles, pharmaceuticals, smart manufacturing, renewable energy, and food processing.

    Significant investment commitments have already been secured. Vinay Thadani, Director and CEO of Grew Solar, confirmed an existing investment of ₹3,000 crore in the state, with plans to scale it up to ₹10,000 crore, covering renewable energy, textiles, and other key sectors.

    Another key development came from Dr. Yadav’s meeting with Mukesh Vora, Chairman of the Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO). Both sides agreed to establish an MP-JITO investment platform in Dubai. The initiative will promote joint ventures in advanced manufacturing, logistics, and renewable energy, while also supporting skill development, MSME growth, and educational exchange.

    Highlighting the broad scope of his visit, the Chief Minister said, “We have been meeting with various stakeholders since morning, including embassy officials. We discussed how the Indian and MP governments can make doing business with foreign partners simpler.” He also mentioned plans to develop food parks, explore mining potential, and support industrial setups.

    Aviation also emerged as a focus area. Dr. Yadav noted efforts to boost flight connectivity and promote the state’s Air Ambulance service, with investor support under the Indian government’s guidance.

    Essa Sulaiman Ahmad, Emirates’ Senior Vice President for Commercial Operations, expressed strong interest in partnering with the state. “It was a terrific opportunity to meet the CM of Madhya Pradesh. Having been in India for seven years, I’ve seen the scale of investment and vision the CM brings,” he said.
