    An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, killing 241 people in what is being described as one of the worst aviation disasters in India’s history. Only one passenger survived.

    Flight AI-171, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, went down minutes after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 p.m. IST. The aircraft plunged into a residential complex near BJ Medical College, triggering a massive fire and a large-scale emergency response across the city.

    According to Air India, the flight was carrying 242 people — 230 passengers and 12 crew members, including two pilots. The sole survivor, a British national of Indian origin seated in 11A, is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

    The airline confirmed the tragedy in an official statement on X, saying, “UPDATE: Air India confirms that flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on 12 June 2025, was involved in an accident. The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew. The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off. We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital.”

    Air India also released a breakdown of the passengers’ nationalities: 169 were Indian, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.

    The airline extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and said a dedicated team has been deployed in Ahmedabad to provide support.
    “Our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of all those affected, their families and loved ones,” the statement read.

    Air India has pledged full cooperation with the authorities investigating the cause of the crash. Dedicated helplines have been set up for families seeking information. Domestic callers can reach 1800 5691 444, while international callers can dial +91 8062779200.

  • Trump can keep National Guard deployed to Los Angeles for now, appeals court rules

    A U.S. appeals court on Thursday allowed President Donald Trump to maintain his deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles amid protests over stepped-up immigration enforcement, temporarily pausing a lower court’s ruling blocking the mobilization.

    The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision does not mean that the court will ultimately agree with Trump, but it means he will maintain command of the guard for now.

    Earlier on Thursday, San Francisco-based U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer found that Trump’s deployment of the Guard was unlawful. Breyer had ordered the National Guard to return to the control of California Governor Gavin Newsom, who had brought the case.

    It was a short-lived victory for Newsom, as Breyer’s order was paused a short time later.

    The appeals court decision stands to leave in place the dynamic of weeklong street demonstrations that have been concentrated in downtown Los Angeles, largely at a federal detention center where National Guard troops have stood watch.

    The Guard had also accompanied Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on operations.

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday described the crash of Air India Flight AI171 as a “national tragedy that has plunged the entire country into mourning” and expressing grief over the immense loss of life, assured families of the victims that the government will provide unwavering support during this time of sorrow.

    Amit Shah visited the Civil Hospital in Asarwa, Ahmedabad, to meet the sole survivor, other victims’ families, and assess the medical response. He also chaired a high-level review meeting with officials from the Civil Aviation Ministry, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Gujarat government to oversee rescue operations and coordinate investigations.

    “This heartbreaking incident has shaken us all,” he said at a press briefing. “The Hon’ble Prime Minister reached out immediately, and all relevant departments of the Government of India, along with the Gujarat Government, are working together on relief and rescue operations.”

    Providing an update on the casualties, he noted: “The aircraft was carrying 230 passengers, including both Indian nationals and foreign citizens, as well as 12 crew members. Amidst this tragedy, I have received some hopeful news -one passenger has survived. I have personally met him.”

    In a post on social media platform X earlier, Amit Shah expressed his anguish: “Pained beyond words by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. Disaster response forces were swiftly mobilised. I have spoken with Gujarat CM Shri Bhupendra Patel, State Home Minister Shri Harsh Sanghavi, and the Police Commissioner to take full stock of the situation.”

    Shah emphasised the scale and severity of the disaster, revealing that DNA identification is currently underway to formally confirm the identities of the deceased.

    “Only after the DNA process is completed will we be able to release the names,” he said.

    The minister also highlighted the catastrophic nature of the incident, noting that the blaze erupted with such intensity after the plane went down that “there was no opportunity to save anything.”

    The wreckage was quickly engulfed, making immediate rescue efforts extremely difficult.

    The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, bound for London Gatwick, crashed minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, striking a doctors’ hostel near a medical college.

    The impact triggered a devastating explosion, resulting in the deaths of over 200 individuals, including passengers, crew, and people on the ground. Authorities are continuing recovery and identification operations.

  • Air India plane crash: Tata Group announces Rs 1 crore support for families of victims

    Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran on Thursday announced that the company will provide Rs 1 crore to the families of each person who lost their life in the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad.

    He also said that the Tata Group will cover the medical expenses of those who were injured and ensure they receive full care and support.

    In a statement, Chandrasekaran said: “No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured.”

    He added that the Tata Group would also help build a new hostel at B.J. Medical College as part of its support efforts.

    “We remain steadfast in standing with the affected families and communities during this unimaginable time,” he mentioned.

    Expressing his grief, Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata said the tragedy has brought “immense grief to countless families”.

    “This heart-wrenching incident has brought immense grief to countless families, and our thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones today,” he said.

    “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and stand in solidarity with them during this unimaginable time.”

    The crash involved Air India Flight 171, which was flying from Ahmedabad to London. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the plane had 242 people onboard, including ten cabin crew members.

    The DGCA reported that the aircraft took off from Runway 23 at 1.39 p.m. Shortly after, it sent out a MAYDAY distress signal to the Air Traffic Control (ATC), but no further communication was received after that.

    The aircraft crashed just outside the airport boundary and was seen emitting thick black smoke.

    The flight was being commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, with First Officer Clive Kundar as the co-pilot.

    Top leaders of the world continue to express their heartfelt condolences and deep grief at the tragic crash of an Air India flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The London-bound aircraft, carrying over 200 people, crashed shortly after takeoff near Meghani Nagar.

    “To my friend PMO India Narendra Modi and the people of India, I was saddened to learn of the tragic Air India crash. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted on X.

    Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that he was “deeply saddened” by the tragic crash of Air India flight with the civilian casualties on the ground being equally heartbreaking.

    “I am deeply saddened by the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171 near Ahmedabad today. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of all those affected onboard. Equally heartbreaking are the civilian casualties on the ground, including young medical students whose lives and futures were struck by this tragedy. At this moment of deep sorrow, the people of Sri Lanka stand in solidarity with India. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted,” Dissanayake posted on X.

    Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, mentioned that Canada is deeply saddened by the crash of a London-bound Air India plane in Ahmedabad.

    “Devastated to learn of the crash of a London-bound Air India plane in Ahmedabad. My thoughts are with the loved ones of everyone on board. Canada’s transportation officials are in close contact with counterparts and I am receiving regular updates as the response to this tragedy unfolds,” he said.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Canada for the G7 Summit, next week. Cyprus, another country PM Modi is expected to visit en route to Canada, also expressed shock over the Ahmedabad air crash.

    “Dear PM Narendra Modi, I express my heartfelt condolences to you and the people of India following the devastating loss of Air India Flight AI171. The people of Cyprus mourn with you. In this time of sorrow, we stand by our Indian friends with solidarity and compassion,” stated Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.

    Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who was visiting India recently, also took to X to offer his condolences.

    “Akshata and I are deeply shocked and distressed by the news of the Air India tragedy. There is a unique bond between our two nations and our thoughts and prayers go out to the British and Indian families who have lost loved ones today,” he stated.

    Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot, who had just hosted External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Brussels, said that he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the crash of the Air India flight near the airport in Ahmedabad.

    “Our thoughts are with the victims, the rescuers on the ground, and the people of India in these painful moments. Belgium stands in solidarity with India and all affected communities. Our services are closely following developments,” he said.

    Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message of condolence to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the passenger plane crash in Ahmedabad..

    “Please accept the deepest condolences over the tragic consequences of a passenger plane crash in Ahmedabad. Kindly convey the words of sincere sympathy and support to the families and near ones of the victims, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured in this catastrophe,” said Putin

    President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu also expressed grief and extended solidarity with the Government and people of India.

    “I express profound sadness at the tragic crash of Air India flight AI 171 near Ahmedabad. At this difficult time, the government and people of Maldives stand in solidarity with the people and the Government of India,” Muizzu posted on X.

    Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Union, too expressed shock over the “heartbreaking news” from India.

    “My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones grieving this terrible loss. We share your pain. Dear Narendra Modi, Europe stands in solidarity with you and the people of India in this moment of sorrow,” she said.

    British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating.

    “I am being kept updated as the situation develops, and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time,” Starmer posted on X.

    Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also took to X, offering his deepest condolences on the tragic accident.

    “Horrible news of a passenger plane crash in India. My deepest condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the entire people of India on this tragic day. Our thoughts are with all victims’ relatives and close ones in India, the UK, Portugal, and Canada. We share your shock and grief on this tragic day. We all pray for as many lives to be saved as possible and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” Zelensky posted on X.

  • Metro rail, highway, and logistics projects reviewed at 95th NPG meeting under PM GatiShakti Plan

    The 95th meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG), under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, was held today to assess a series of infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing multimodal connectivity and improving logistics efficiency across India. Five major proposals, including a metro rail extension, two highway initiatives, and two multi-modal logistics parks, were reviewed for their alignment with the principles of integrated infrastructure planning and last-mile connectivity.

    One of the key projects discussed was the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-2A, proposed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). This project involves the extension of the metro line by 6.032 kilometers from Koteshwar Metro Station to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The extension is designed to significantly boost urban mobility in Ahmedabad by offering quicker and more direct access to the airport for commuters, staff, and residents. Developed in collaboration with the airport authority, municipal corporations, and other local and central stakeholders, the project is expected to ease city congestion and enhance the city’s public transport infrastructure.

    The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) presented two highway development projects. The first is the construction of an 8-lane access-controlled highway along NH-248S to improve connectivity to the proposed Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra. Designed to support one of India’s most ambitious port projects, the highway will facilitate the movement of cargo to and from the port, which is set to become one of the top ten container ports globally. The highway is projected to handle over 57,000 passenger car units daily by 2030 and will link directly with the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway and NH-48, ensuring seamless freight evacuation via road and rail.

    The second highway project is a 4-lane elevated corridor in Jodhpur city, which will run 7.63 kilometers from Mahamandir to Akhaliya Chouraha. Aligned along NH-62 and NH-125, the elevated road aims to alleviate heavy urban traffic by bypassing 28 junctions and reducing peak-hour travel times by approximately 20 minutes. The corridor is designed to accommodate future traffic growth and will improve intra-city movement and regional connectivity in Rajasthan.

    Two proposals for multi-modal logistics parks were also reviewed to support India’s broader logistics modernization efforts. The first, MMLP Hyderabad, will be developed in Parkibanda village in Telangana’s Medak district. Spanning 315 acres, this logistics hub is expected to handle 1.47 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo annually by 2028, with its capacity scaling up to nearly 20 MMT by 2070. Its strategic location near NH-44, Manoharabad Railway Station, and the upcoming Regional Ring Road ensures excellent connectivity to industrial clusters around Hyderabad.

    The second logistics park, MMLP Patna, is proposed at Jaitiya village in Bihar’s Fatuah Taluka. Covering 106 acres, this facility is expected to manage 5.43 MMT of cargo annually by 2071. With proximity to Top Sarthua Railway Station, Patna Airport, and multiple national and state highways, the park will be a key node in Eastern India’s logistics network. It will facilitate regional trade and strengthen connections to major hubs like Kolkata and Haldia Port.

    India on Thursday strongly condemned the vandalisation of the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore – historically called the Rabindra Kachharibari – in the Sirajganj district of Bangladesh, urging the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government in the country to take strict action against the extremist elements involved in the incident.

    “We strongly condemn the despicable attack and vandalisation of the ancestral home of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore by a mob on June 8, 2025. The violent act is a disgrace to the memory and the inclusive philosophy and the teachings that the Nobel laureate espoused in Bangladesh. The attack falls in a broad pattern of systematic attempts by extremists to erase the symbols of tolerance and eviscerate the synchronic culture and cultural legacy of Bangladesh,” said Randhir Jaiswal, Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), during a weekly media briefing.

    “We urge the interim government to rein in the terrorists and take strict action against the perpetrators to prevent recurrence of such incidents that sadly have become a repetitive feature,” he added.

    The MEA also reiterated that it wants to establish a positive and constructive relationship with the South Asian neighbour.

    “Our approach to engagement with Bangladesh and our ties with the country are well known. I have stated this from this podium several times. We seek a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh, one that is anchored in the aspirations of the people of both countries,” mentioned Jaiswal.

    Bangladeshi media reported that a mob of 50–60 people broke into the Rabindra Kachharibari, which also houses a memorial museum, and vandalised the auditorium and custodian’s office, causing significant damage to the historic building.

    “There were visitors at the site who panicked due to the sudden attack. We took shelter during the attack and informed police immediately,” Bangladesh’s Daily Star quoted Habibur Rahman, a custodian of the Kachharibari, as saying.

    One of the visitors, Enamul Haque, who had arrived with his family, criticised the attack. “Criminal activities at a historic site like Shahzadpur Rabindra Kachharibari are unacceptable,” he said.

    Confirming the incident, Shahzadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC)stated, “A complaint was lodged earlier. We are investigating the matter.”

    The leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, had also raised the issue during his speech at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in Kolkata, on Wednesday.

    “The sacred legacy of our most precious Kobiguru Rabindranath Thakur was desecrated in Sirajganj, Bangladesh, where a mob led by BNP and Chhatra Shibir activists vandalised the historic Rabindra Kachari Bari. This shameful and utterly disgraceful act of destruction targetted a site that embodies Bengal’s cultural soul and Tagore’s universal message of humanity. Windows shattered, furniture ruined, and a Global Icon’s memory insulted,” he posted on X.

  • Government e-Marketplace surges past ₹4 lakh crore GMV in just 10 months of FY 2024-25

    Under the transformative leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who completes 11 years in office, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing a Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of ₹4.09 lakh crore within the first 10 months of Fiscal Year 2024-25. This feat, announced by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, reflects a nearly 50% growth compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year, cementing GeM’s role as a cornerstone of India’s digital procurement revolution.

    Launched in August 2016, GeM has emerged as a trusted platform for transparent and efficient public procurement, serving over 1.6 lakh government entities and 22.5 lakh sellers and service providers. The platform’s GMV for FY 2024-25, achieved by January 23, 2025, outpaces last year’s historic high of ₹4 lakh crore, driven significantly by the services segment, which accounted for ₹2.54 lakh crore (62% of total GMV). The product segment contributed ₹1.55 lakh crore (38%). The services segment’s near-100% growth, fueled by the addition of 19 new service categories, has enabled government entities to procure specialized services like debit card printing, bulk email services, dark fiber leasing, and data center operations management with enhanced efficiency.

    Central government entities, particularly the ministries of Coal, Defence, Petroleum & Natural Gas, Power, and Steel, have been pivotal in this surge. The Ministry of Coal led as the top procurer, with a transacted order value of nearly ₹1.63 lakh crore, including over 320 high-value bids worth approximately ₹42,000 crore for handling and transport services by Coal PSUs. GeM’s versatility is evident in its facilitation of both everyday essentials, such as rations and stationery, and high-end, complex items like advanced technology systems and missile components.

    The platform’s operational excellence was further highlighted by processing 49,960 orders in a single day during FY 2024-25, showcasing its robustness and widespread adoption. Since its inception, GeM has facilitated over 2.59 crore orders, amassing a cumulative GMV of more than ₹11.64 lakh crore. Continuous reforms, including simplified processes and reduced transaction charges, have made GeM more accessible, particularly for Micro and Small Enterprises, startups, and women-led businesses.

    As Prime Minister Narendra Modi completes 11 years in office, the Ministry of Ayush has launched preparations for the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025, heralding it as a global wellness movement. At a curtain-raiser event held at the National Media Centre in New Delhi, the Ministry announced that PM Modi will lead a historic yoga session with over five lakh participants in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on June 21, under the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”

    Union Minister of State for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, joined by Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, addressed the media, reflecting on IDY’s transformative journey since its inception. “Following the visionary call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the United Nations adopted June 21 as International Day of Yoga in 2014, sparking a global movement rooted in India’s ancient wisdom,” Jadhav said. He highlighted past celebrations in New Delhi, Mysuru, New York, and Srinagar, which have united diverse cultures in the pursuit of health, harmony, and peace.

    This year’s IDY, marking its 11th edition, aims to deepen yoga’s reach across society. The Visakhapatnam event will feature the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), while “Yoga Sangam” sessions at over one lakh locations nationwide will create one of the largest synchronized yoga demonstrations in history. The theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health” echoes India’s G20 Presidency vision and the ethos of “Sarve Santu Niramaya” (May all be free from disease), promoting holistic well-being.

    Jadhav commended the Andhra Pradesh government and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for their “YogaAndhra” campaign, which seeks to build a community of 10 lakh regular yoga practitioners. He outlined ten Signature Events planned over 100 days, including Yoga Samavesh for inclusivity and Yoga Bandhan for international partnerships, to promote yoga as a way of life. Countdown events at 100-day, 75-day, 50-day, and 25-day milestones in Delhi, Bhubaneswar, Nashik, and Puducherry have already generated significant enthusiasm.

    “Yoga is more than postures and breathing—it’s a lifestyle,” Jadhav told the media, urging their support to make IDY 2025 a landmark event inspiring millions to embrace yoga for a healthier, happier society.

    Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha noted that over 60 countries are organizing activities for IDY 2025, aligning with the theme and Signature Events. Shri P.N. Ranjit Kumar, Officer on Special Duty for IDY Coordination, presented the event’s scale and strategy, emphasizing collaborations with state governments, civil society, and global partners. The Ministry is leveraging digital tools and grassroots mobilization to position IDY 2025 as a global celebration of wellness.

    India’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate dropped to 2.82% in May 2025, marking the lowest year-on-year rate since February 2019, according to the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation. This provisional figure, measured against May 2024, reflects a 34-basis-point decline from April 2025’s 3.16%, signaling robust economic stability.

    Food inflation, a key driver, fell sharply to 0.99% in May 2025, the lowest since October 2021, down 79 basis points from April’s 1.78%. Rural areas recorded a food inflation rate of 0.95%, while urban areas saw 0.96%. The decline is attributed to lower prices for pulses, vegetables, fruits, cereals, household goods, sugar, confectionery, and eggs, supported by a favorable base effect.

    Headline inflation in rural areas decreased to 2.59% in May 2025 from 2.92% in April, while urban areas saw a reduction from 3.36% to 3.07%. Rural food inflation dropped from 1.85% to 0.95%, and urban food inflation fell from 1.64% to 0.96%. Other sectors showed varied trends: housing inflation, measured only in urban areas, rose slightly to 3.16% from 3.06%, while education and health inflation stood at 4.12% and 4.34%, respectively. Transport and communication inflation increased to 3.85% from 3.67%, and fuel and light inflation eased to 2.78% from 2.92%.

    The National Statistical Office collected price data from 1114 urban markets and 1181 villages across all states and Union Territories, achieving a 100% response rate for villages and 98.6% for urban markets. States with the highest inflation rates include Kerala (6.46%), Punjab (5.21%), and Jammu & Kashmir (4.55%), though most states reported moderated rates.

    Tracked on a 2012 base year since January 2013, the combined CPI for May 2025 reached 193.0, up marginally by 0.21% from April’s 192.6. The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) remained nearly stable at 194.5, with a minimal monthly change of -0.05%, reflecting effective economic management and affordability for millions of Indians.

    The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that the Boeing 787-8 aircraft, registered as VT-ANB, was operating Flight AI-171 to Gatwick Airport when it went down shortly after departure. The aircraft was carrying 2 pilots, 10 cabin crew members, and 230 passengers.

    Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also expressed her heartfelt condolences following the crash of an Air India aircraft near Ahmedabad Airport, which was carrying 242 people, including crew members.

    “Distressed on hearing about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. My prayers are with all families and friends of those on board the flight,” said Sitharaman.

    Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said he was “deeply pained to learn about the plane crash in Ahmedabad.”

    “I convey my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We stand firmly with those grieving and pray for the quick recovery of the injured. Om Shanti,” he posted.

    Offering his condolences, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his thoughts were with the passengers and their families.

    “The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating,” Starmer wrote on X.
    “I am being kept updated as the situation develops, and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time,” he added.

    British Foreign Minister David Lammy said he was deeply saddened by the news and that the UK was working with Indian authorities.

    “Deeply saddened by news of a devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, India,” Lammy said on X. “My thoughts are with all those affected. The UK is working with local authorities in India to urgently establish the facts and provide support.”

    Speaking later in the British Parliament, Lammy said the UK had activated a crisis team in both India’s capital, New Delhi, and in London.

    Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also extended his condolences.
    “Horrible news of a passenger plane crash in India. My deepest condolences to Prime Minister @narendramodi and the entire people of India on this tragic day. Our thoughts are with all victims’ relatives and close ones in India, the UK, Portugal, and Canada. We share your shock and grief. We pray for as many lives to be saved as possible and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” he said in a post on X.

    The Airports Authority of India (AAI) said an operational control room had been activated “to oversee and coordinate all necessary response measures.”

    As Prime Minister Narendra Modi marks 11 years in office, India’s digital economy is poised to become a cornerstone of national growth, projected to account for nearly one-fifth of the country’s income by 2029-30. According to the State of India’s Digital Economy Report 2024, India ranks as the third most digitized economy globally and 12th among G20 nations for individual user digitalization, reflecting remarkable progress in digital transformation over the past decade.

    The digital economy, contributing 11.74% of India’s GDP (Rs. 31.64 lakh crore or USD 402 billion) in 2022-23, is growing nearly twice as fast as the overall economy. Employing 14.67 million workers—2.55% of the workforce—it is almost five times more productive than other sectors. Under PM Modi’s leadership, this sector has flourished, driven by digital-enabling industries like ICT services, electronic component manufacturing, and communication equipment, which account for 7.83% of Gross Value Added (GVA). Digital platforms and intermediaries contribute an additional 2% of GVA, while digitalization in traditional sectors such as banking, financial services, insurance (BFSI), retail, and education adds another 2%.

    By 2029-30, the digital economy is expected to outpace agriculture and manufacturing, fueled by rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud services, and the expansion of global capability centers (GCCs). India hosts 55% of the world’s GCCs, which are offshore hubs established by multinational corporations for services like R&D, IT support, and business process management. The growth of digital intermediaries and platforms is anticipated to lead in the short term, with broader digital diffusion across the economy reducing the relative share of ICT industries over time.

    Digital transformation is reshaping traditional sectors unevenly. In BFSI, over 95% of banking payment transactions are digital, but revenue-generating activities like loans and investments remain largely offline. Retail is embracing omni-channel models, with e-tailers adding physical stores and leveraging AI chatbots and digital inventory tools for efficiency. Education is adopting hybrid models combining offline and online learning, while hospitality and logistics are integrating AI, metaverse technologies, and digital tools, though smaller firms lag behind larger ones in full digitalization.

    The digital economy’s growth rate of 17.3% over the past decade surpasses the overall economy’s 11.8%. Digital platforms, in particular, are projected to grow at approximately 30% in the coming years. In 2022-23, the sector employed 14.67 million workers, with 58.07% in digital-enabling industries. Notably, digital platforms are creating job opportunities for women, overcoming barriers related to mobility and safety, though the workforce remains predominantly male.

    n Air India plane crashed near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday,  airline and police officials said. 

    According to Gujarat State Police Control Room, the Air India Flight AI 171 was bound for London.

    The plane was headed to London’s Gatwick airport in the UK, Air India said. 

    “At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates,” Air India said on X.

    Thick plumes of smoke were visible at the crash site, and fire tenders were rushed to the spot immediately after the incident.

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, state Home Minister, and Ahmedabad Police Commissioner regarding the crash. According to ANI, Shah assured full support and assistance from the central government.

    As of May 2025, more than 1.07 crore civil servants, referred to as Karmayogis, have been onboarded on the platform. It currently hosts 2,588 courses across a broad spectrum of governance-related subjects. The platform has issued over 3.24 crore learning certificates, encouraging continuous learning through online, in-person, and blended formats.

    The platform also promotes peer-to-peer learning, provides structured career path guidance, and includes rigorous assessment mechanisms. Together, these features contribute to building a capable, agile, and accountable public service aligned with the vision of a New India.

    DigiLocker: Advancing Digital Empowerment
    Since its launch in 2015, DigiLocker has emerged as a cornerstone in India’s digital public infrastructure. Designed to provide citizens with secure access to authentic digital documents, the platform enables a paperless and convenient method of availing government and other services.

    As of April 2025, DigiLocker has recorded an impressive 51.6 crore users. Between January and June 11, 2025, 9.42 crore new users registered on the platform, including 33.06 lakh sign-ups in the month of June alone.

    In 2024, the platform saw an exponential rise with 2031.99 lakh yearly user sign-ups, a sharp increase compared to 9.98 lakh sign-ups recorded in 2015 — marking a significant leap in digital document adoption.

    UMANG: Simplifying Access to Government Services
    Launched in 2017, the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) platform has been instrumental in facilitating mobile governance in the country. It provides a single, unified interface for citizens to access e-Governance services ranging from Central to State and Local government bodies.

    As of May 2025, UMANG has achieved 8.21 crore user registrations and facilitated 597 crore transactions. The platform currently offers 2,300 government services in 23 Indian languages, reinforcing inclusive access to public services across diverse linguistic and regional demographics.

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday highlighted the achievements of the Modi government’s digital revolution over the past 11 years, including ease of living and economic boom achieved during the ‘India’s Techade’.

    He credited the government’s vision for the technology-led development that has transformed society and every sector of the economy.

    “The Modi government democratised the use of technology and harnessed its power for the business sector, making Bharat a leading digital economy in the world in the #11YearsOfDigitalIndia. Whether it is healthcare, education, trade, or commerce, PM Shri @narendramodi Ji has transformed every sector of the economy and society through the digital revolution,” said Union Minister Shah in a post on the social media platform X.

    In his post, the Home Minister attached a digital poster titled ‘Big Picture – India’s Techade’ enlisting the achievements of the government, ranging from the launch of foreign satellites to rising internet users and mobile subscribers.

    He said that over 37 crore patients used digital consultation under the eSanjeevani scheme, over 52-plus crore people registered themselves on ‘DigiLocker’, 8 crore users used the UMANG platform for all government services, and the number of internet users rose 285 per cent during the period.

    Showcasing the strides taken in the telecom sector, Shah said the number of mobile subscribers has touched 116 crore while the cost per GB of data has declined from Rs 308 to Rs 9.34 during India’s Techade.

    The Home Minister’s post also delved into the government’s achievement of laying 6.93 lakh km of optical fibre cable under Bharat Net.

    Focusing on the economic benefits from the digital revolution, HM Shah said 49 per cent of the global real-time digital transactions happen in India.

    On the GeM portal, Rs 13-plus lakh crore worth of orders were placed on the platform till March 2025, he said.

    The Home Minister also said that during the past 11 years, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched 393 foreign satellites.

    During the 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government, India has emerged as a global leader in digital finance and inclusion, harnessing technology to deliver accessible, efficient, and transparent financial services to every corner of the country. This digital transformation has played a pivotal role in bridging the urban-rural divide and reshaping India’s economic landscape.

    The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionised digital transactions, with over 1,867.7 crore transactions worth ₹24.77 lakh crore recorded in April 2025 alone. Now used by nearly 460 million individuals and 65 million merchants, UPI has gone global, with its presence in more than seven countries, including the UAE, Singapore, and France. According to ACI Worldwide’s 2024 report, India accounted for 49% of all global real-time transactions in 2023, underscoring its leadership in digital payments innovation.

    The Aadhaar-enabled e-KYC system has simplified access to banking and public services, with over 141.88 crore Aadhaar IDs issued as of April 2025. It has become a foundational pillar of India’s digital infrastructure, ensuring faster verification and enhanced transparency.

    Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT), backed by Aadhaar authentication, has streamlined welfare delivery. Over ₹44 lakh crore has been transferred directly to beneficiaries’ accounts as of May 2025, eliminating middlemen and fake beneficiaries. This has saved the exchequer more than ₹3.48 lakh crore since 2015. The system has also removed over 5.87 crore ineligible ration card holders and 4.23 crore fake LPG connections, making welfare schemes more targeted.

    In the realm of e-commerce, the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), launched in 2022, has expanded to over 616 cities, empowering small sellers and service providers. By January 2025, more than 7.64 lakh sellers had joined the platform, boosting MSME participation in the digital economy.

    Similarly, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), launched in 2016, has transformed public procurement. By January 2025, GeM had achieved a gross merchandise value (GMV) of ₹4.09 lakh crore in just 10 months of FY 2024–25, marking nearly 50% growth over the previous year. With over 1.6 lakh government buyers and 22.5 lakh sellers, GeM continues to enhance transparency and efficiency in government transactions.

    Together, these initiatives reflect a decade of digital empowerment under the Modi government, setting the foundation for a more inclusive, transparent, and resilient financial ecosystem.

Rural connectivity has significantly improved, with rural telephone connections jumping from 377.78 million in 2014 to 527.34 million in 2024. Internet connections have soared from 25.15 crore to 96.96 crore during the same period—a growth of over 285%.

    Broadband services saw an exponential rise, from just 6.1 crore users in 2014 to nearly 95 crore by August 2024. The cost of wireless data has dropped drastically from ₹308 per GB in 2014 to ₹9.34 in 2022, making digital access more affordable for millions.

    A key milestone in India’s digital journey has been the rollout of 5G services, launched in October 2022. In less than two years, India installed 4.74 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations, extending high-speed connectivity to 99.6% of districts. This leap supports a growing mobile subscriber base, which reached 116 crore in 2025.

    The BharatNet project has also played a pivotal role in bridging the digital divide. As of January 2025, high-speed internet has been delivered to over 2.18 lakh Gram Panchayats, with 6.92 lakh km of optical fibre cable laid, transforming connectivity in rural India.

    Besides the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ pledge, the goal and vision of achieving ‘Digital India’ is beginning to realise as this forms the core of governance of the incumbent dispensation.

    The digital revolution, which began 11 years ago, is entrenched in almost every policy-making and public welfare scheme delivery with elaborate plans on how to bring benefits to the poor, downtrodden and marginalised sections.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to the social media platform X on Thursday and wrote about “leveraging the power of technology in bringing innumerable benefits for people”.

    “Service delivery and transparency have been greatly boosted. Technology has become a means of empowering the lives of the poorest of the poor,” he further said.

    Here is a look at how the Digital India mission unlocked opportunities for millions:

    The Digital India initiative, launched by PM Modi in his first term, has gone on to reshape the way the country has grown and developed in the past decade. The governance has become transparent and accessible for every citizen, while it has also unlocked massive opportunities for the common citizen.

    Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) marks one of the biggest hallmarks of the Modi government as it ensured seamless and leakage-free delivery of public welfare funds and schemes to crores of poor households. Today, the villages have access to internet services, while the digital payment system is also reaching the rural belts.

    DBT transfers

    Today, there are more than 322 schemes across 56 ministries covered under the DBT. More than Rs 44 lakh crore has been transferred directly into the accounts of beneficiaries, while Rs 3.48 lakh crore has been saved by cutting out leakages and preventing middlemen.

    In the past ten years, there has been a 90-fold increase in DBT transfers, marking a new era of public welfare delivery, laced with speed and transparency.

    Aadhaar: The World’s largest digital ID system

    Aadhaar – a unique identity of every citizen is powering the country’s digital identity revolution.

    Today, every citizen of the 140-crore population has a unique 12-digit Aadhaar number. Aadhaar authentication transactions have crossed 150 billion mark.

    DigiLocker making India paperless

    DigiLocker, an application that facilitates document storage online, has given strong impetus to paperless governance. As per official estimates, there are more than 52 crore registered Digilocker users in the country, with over 852 crore documents issued.

    Jeevan Pramaan

    Under the Jeevan Pramaan yojana, technology was harnessed to bring dignity to human lives. Jeevan Praman Patra has simplified life for pensioners by providing hassle-free digital life certificates.

    Today, more than 10 crore pensioners are registered, which means they no longer need to visit banks for giving “life certificates” in person.

    More than 143 lakh ‘Digital Life Certificates’ have been submitted since November 2024.

    UMANG: One platform for all services

    UMANG App has been instrumental in converging all government services on one platform. It has become a single digital gateway for accessing more than 2,000 services across various government departments. As per records, there are over 8.21 crore registered users, with over 597 crore transactions.

    Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyaan is another scheme with far-reaching implications. It has gone a long way in bridging the digital divide in rural India.

    There has been a surge in private investments in the last 11 years, with Indian startups and emerging entities attracting significant private funding to the tune of over $150 billion in the past decade, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.

    More than Rs 22,900 crore have been invested in over 1,270 startups via the government’s Fund of Funds for Startups scheme.

    “India is embracing technology like no other! This digital transformation is the outcome of the forward-looking vision and timely policy interventions under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Every section of society and every aspect of life has been positively impacted by 11 years of Digital India,” Goyal said in a post on social media platform X.

    IP filings by the domestic startups surged from 2017 to 2024, with over 355 per cent growth in patents and more than 543 per cent growth in trademarks.

    India now ranks 39th globally on the ‘Global Innovation Index 2024’.

    Goyal said he is proud to witness the profound impact of PM Narendra Modi’s revolutionary initiative ‘Startup India’ on boosting innovation and enterprise in the country.

    “The remarkable talent of our youth and women is powering this revolution and driving India’s economic growth with unparalleled vigour,” he mentioned.

    India has become the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, with more than 1.5 lakh startups and over 100 unicorns.

    “11 years of Digital India has empowered every citizen with seamless services, financial access, and last-mile connectivity,” said Minister of State for Commerce and Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada.

    The digital revolution, which began 11 years ago, is entrenched in almost every policy-making and public welfare scheme delivery with elaborate plans on how to bring benefits to the poor, downtrodden and marginalised sections.

    Prime Minister Modi took to X on Thursday and wrote about “leveraging the power of technology in bringing innumerable benefits for people”.

    “Service delivery and transparency have been greatly boosted. Technology has become a means of empowering the lives of the poorest of the poor,” he further said.

    The United States has begun evacuating non-essential personnel from its diplomatic missions and military bases in the Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran and stalled nuclear negotiations, the State Department and the Department of Defense confirmed on Wednesday.

    The US Embassy in Baghdad is at the center of the drawdown, with the State Department authorizing the departure of staff not deemed critical to ongoing operations. In parallel, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has permitted the departure of military dependents stationed across the region. Personnel in US embassies in Bahrain and Kuwait are reportedly on standby for relocation, according to US and Iraqi sources.

    President Donald Trump, addressing reporters, said the decision was taken due to security concerns. “They are being moved out because it could be a dangerous place,” he said. “We’ve given notice to move out and we’ll see what happens. Iran can’t have a nuclear weapon. Very simply, they can’t have a nuclear weapon, we’re not going to allow that.”

    The US move follows an apparent deadlock in nuclear talks with Tehran, raising fears of possible conflict. Iranian Defence Minister officials have warned that US military assets in the region would be targeted if the nuclear negotiations fail and a confrontation ensues.

    US intelligence assessments reportedly indicate that Israel has been preparing for a possible strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, adding further uncertainty to an already volatile situation. President Trump has urged Israel to refrain from any preemptive military action as Washington continues efforts to revive the nuclear deal.

    Reuters reported that the partial evacuation and accompanying security measures have already had economic ripple effects, with global oil prices rising by more than four percent on the news. A US official confirmed that voluntary departures had been authorized for American diplomatic missions in Bahrain and Kuwait.

    On Wednesday evening, the State Department updated its global travel advisory to reflect the changes, stating: “On June 11, the Department of State ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel due to heightened regional tensions.”The developments mark a sharp escalation in US-Iran relations, with regional actors bracing for potential fallout if diplomacy fails to yield results.

    The UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer turned down a request to meet Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus during his visit to London aimed at raising support for efforts to recover billions of dollars siphoned off by the deposed regime of Sheikh Hasina, the Financial Times reports.

    Yunus told the British daily that the UK should feel “morally” obliged to help his government track down funds “stolen” by the Awami League-led regime, much of it allegedly now in the UK.

    However, Yunus said Starmer had not yet agreed to meet him.

    “I have no direct conversation with him,” Yunus said, although he added he had “no doubt” Starmer would support Bangladesh’s efforts.

    Earlier yesterday, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam came under criticism for claiming that they weren’t able to secure a meeting with Starmer as the latter was in Canada. Many social media users pointed out that the claim was entirely untrue.

    Meanwhile, Yunus stressed to FT that he was only after the money stolen from Bangladesh.

    UK government officials confirmed to FT that there was no plan for Starmer to meet Yunus at present, and declined to comment further.

    However, according to the report, Yunus said the UK should feel “legally and . . . morally” obliged to help Bangladesh recover laundered money.

    Yunus said the objective of his trip to the UK was to bring out “more enthusiastic support” from the UK.

    Dr Yunus went to the United Kingdom on Tuesday for 4-days official visit, where he is likely to meet acting Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) Tarique Rahman on Friday, reports Bangladesh Sanghbad Sangstha (BSS).

    “The chief adviser has invited our acting chairman…The meeting will be held at the hotel where Yunus is staying,” BNP secretary General Mirza Fakhrul told the media on Tuesday in Dhaka.

    An Air India plane crashed at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Ahmedabad airport on Thursday during takeoff, as per the Gujarat State Police Control Room.

    According to the Police Control room, the Air India Flight AI 171 was bound for London.

    Thick plumes of smoke could be seen at the accident spot, and fire tenders have reached the spot. More details are awaited on the matter.

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken to Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Home Minister and the Police Commissioner regarding the plane crash incident. He also assured to provide Central government assistance.

  • Poland manager Probierz resigns after row with Lewandowski

    Poland manager Michal Probierz resigned from his position on Thursday, four days after star striker Robert Lewandowski said he will no longer play for the national team under him.

    The 36-year-old Barcelona striker said his trust had been betrayed and he was very hurt by the way Probierz told him he was being replaced as team captain.

    Lewandowski, Poland’s record goal-scorer, said on Monday that he received a short call from Probierz as he was putting his children to sleep and that a statement about him losing the captaincy appeared soon after on the Polish Football Association website.

    Probierz decided to replace Lewandowski as captain with midfielder Piotr Zielinski.

    “I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach,” Probierz said in a statement.

    “Performing this function was the fulfilment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour in my life.”

  • Israeli fire kills 60 in Gaza, many near aid site, medics say

    Israeli gunfire and airstrikes killed at least 60 Palestinians in Gaza on Wednesday, most of them near an aid site operated by the U.S- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation in the centre of the enclave, local health officials said.

    Medical officials at Shifa and Al-Quds hospitals said at least 25 people were killed and dozens wounded as they approached a food distribution centre near the former Jewish settlement of Netzarim before dawn.

    Israel’s military, which has been at war with Hamas militants since October 2023, said its forces fired warning shots overnight towards a group of suspects as they posed a threat to troops in the area of the Netzarim Corridor.

    “This is despite warnings that the area is an active combat zone. The IDF is aware of reports regarding individuals injured; the details are under review,” it said.

    Later on Wednesday, health officials at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip said at least 14 people had been killed by Israeli gunfire as they approached another GHF site in Rafah.

    The GHF late on Wednesday accused Hamas of killing at least five people in an attack on a bus carrying two dozen Palestinians working with the aid organization to one of its distribution sites.

    “We will continue our mission to provide critical aid to the people of Gaza,” it said in a statement.

    The foundation earlier said it was unaware of Wednesday’s incidents involving civilians but added that it was working closely with Israeli authorities to ensure safe passage routes are maintained, and that it was essential for Palestinians to closely follow instructions.

    “Ultimately, the solution is more aid, which will create more certainty and less urgency among the population,” it said by email in response to Reuters questions.

    “There is not yet enough food to feed everyone in need in Gaza. Our current focus is to feed as many people as is safely possible within the constraints of a highly volatile environment.”

    GHF said it distributed 2.5 million meals on Wednesday, the largest single-day delivery since it began operations, bringing to more than 16 million the number of meals provided since its operations started in late May.

    Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry says that since then, 163 Palestinians had been killed and over 1,000 wounded trying to obtain the food boxes.

    The United Nations has condemned the killings and has refused to supply aid via the foundation, which uses private contractors with Israeli military backup in what they say is a breach of humanitarian standards.

    Elsewhere in Gaza on Wednesday, its health ministry said at least 11 other people were killed by separate Israeli gunfire and strikes across the coastal enclave.

    The war erupted 20 months ago after Hamas-led militants took 251 hostages and killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, on October 7, 2023, Israel’s single deadliest day.

    Israel’s military campaign has since killed nearly 55,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to health authorities in Gaza, and flattened much of the densely populated strip, which is home to more than two million people. Most of the population is displaced and malnutrition is widespread.

    Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday there had been “significant progress” in efforts to secure the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza, but that it was “too soon” to raise hopes that a deal would be reached.

    Two Hamas sources told Reuters they did not know about any breakthrough in negotiations.

  • EAM Jaishankar’s Brussels visit reinforces India’s ties with EU, Belgium

    External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar concluded a three-day official visit to Brussels from June 9 to 11, reinforcing India’s deepening ties with both the European Union and Belgium.

    In a major boost to India-EU relations, Jaishankar met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, and co-chaired the first-ever India-EU Strategic Dialogue with EU High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas.

    Jaishankar and von der Leyen reaffirmed their commitment to concluding a “balanced, ambitious, and mutually beneficial” Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

    Both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress of cooperation across sectors such as trade, technology, defence and security, mobility of skilled professionals, and connectivity. They also discussed preparations for the next India-EU Summit, agreeing to hold the next meeting of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) before the summit.

    A key highlight of the visit was the Strategic Dialogue held on June 10, where Jaishankar and Kallas held wide-ranging discussions on enhancing collaboration in defence and security, counter-terrorism, maritime security, and cyber issues.

    They also reviewed the proposed India-EU Security and Defence Partnership, a Security of Information Agreement, and plans for a comprehensive Space Dialogue.

    The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments. The European Union strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and reiterated its support for India’s right to defend its citizens.

    During his engagements with European Commissioners, Jaishankar discussed key areas of cooperation. He reviewed progress on the FTA negotiations with Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, explored space and defence industry collaboration with Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius, and discussed connectivity initiatives with Commissioner Jozef Sikela.

    The visit also saw the signing of an Administrative Arrangement for Trilateral Cooperation in development projects, aimed at leveraging the expertise of both India and the EU to support initiatives in third countries.

    Strengthening bilateral ties with Belgium was another major focus of the visit.

    Jaishankar met with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening its close partnership with Belgium across a broad spectrum of areas.

    He also held delegation-level talks with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot.

    The two sides reviewed ongoing collaborations and explored new opportunities in key sectors including semiconductors, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, trade and investment, and security. Belgium reiterated its solidarity with India in the fight against terrorism.

    The visit came on the heels of the EU College of Commissioners’ visit to India and the Belgian Economic Mission to New Delhi, signaling growing momentum in India’s ties with Europe.

    According to the MEA, Jaishankar’s Brussels engagements marked “a significant step forward in reinforcing the vision for a future-oriented partnership” with both the EU and Belgium.

  • Dr. Srinivas Mukkamala becomes first person of Indian origin to lead American Medical Association

    Dr. Srinivas Mukkamala, a Michigan-based otolaryngologist, has made history as the first person of Indian origin to be elected president of the American Medical Association (AMA). He will serve as the organization’s 180th president, the AMA said in a statement on Thursday.

    “To call this moment humbling doesn’t capture it,” Mukkamala said during the AMA’s annual meeting in Chicago. “It’s moving. It’s awe-inspiring.”

    Mukamala was diagnosed with a brain tumour in November 2024 following an MRI scan. He underwent surgery three weeks later, with doctors removing 90% of the 8-cm mass located in the left temporal lobe, according to the AMA.

    Speaking at the ceremony, Mukkamala said his recent health battle had deepened his commitment to improving healthcare access in the United States.

    “I benefited from the best treatment possible. But for many patients, the process is far more difficult, filled with questions about insurance coverage, cost of care, and delays in access,” he said.

    Mukkamala said the U.S. health system must rely on input from physicians across specialties and geographies. “It needs the AMA more than ever, with our profession speaking in one firm and commanding voice”, he added.

    The AMA’s House of Delegates, which met from June 6 to 11, also adopted a new policy promoting education on the health risks of ultraprocessed foods. The policy encourages medical schools to integrate nutrition training into curricula to help physicians better advise patients.

    The AMA, founded in 1847, is the largest association of physicians and medical students in the United States.
