In a significant move to enhance national security preparedness, civil defence mock drills will be conducted on Saturday under ‘Operation Shield’ across several states and Union Territories sharing borders with Pakistan.

The exercises are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. and will be held in Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Chandigarh, focusing on regions closest to the border and most susceptible to cross-border threats.

Initially planned for May 29, the drills were rescheduled due to administrative reasons.

A government press release issued on May 29 confirmed the new date and emphasised the importance of this exercise in bolstering readiness and addressing critical gaps identified during a similar nationwide drill conducted earlier this month, on May 7.

‘Operation Shield’ is designed to simulate hostile situations, including air raid sirens, blackout protocols, and various emergency response actions, to evaluate the preparedness of civil authorities, emergency services, and local populations.

The drills aim to replicate real-time scenarios that may arise from potential external threats, particularly in sensitive districts near the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB).

This initiative underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen civil defence mechanisms amid heightened regional security concerns.

The drills are expected to significantly improve inter-agency coordination, public awareness, and the ability of local systems to respond swiftly and efficiently in the event of any hostile act or natural disaster affecting the border regions.

  • Colombia withdraws statement condoling terrorists killed in ‘Operation Sindoor’

Colombia’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, on Friday said that Bogota was withdrawing an earlier statement expressing condolences for those killed in Pakistan during India’s counter-terror operation, ‘Operation Sindoor’.

The statement came after a meeting with an Indian parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who said Colombia had “fully understood India’s position” on the matter.

“The Vice Minister very graciously mentioned that they have withdrawn the statement we had expressed concern about, and that they fully understand our position on the matter, which is something we really value,” Tharoor told reporters after the meeting.

Earlier, India had expressed disappointment over the Colombian statement, which appeared to equate terrorists killed in the Indian strike with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, carried out by The Resistance Front — an affiliate of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Standing alongside Tharoor, Villavicencio said: “We are very confident that with the explanations we received today, and the detailed information we now have regarding the real situation in Kashmir, we can continue the dialogue.”

Colombia’s course correction comes as it prepares to join the UN Security Council next year, where it is running unopposed for the Latin American seat.

Speaking to local media on Thursday, Tharoor said India had been “a little disappointed” that Colombia had issued condolences for those killed in Pakistan “rather than sympathising with the victims of terrorism” in Jammu and Kashmir.

Colombia acted promptly on India’s concerns. Former President Cesar Augusto Gaviria Trujillo, leader of the country’s largest political party, said, “Colombia has solidarity with India. We check any kind of terrorism, and under any circumstances, we will be on your side.”

Following the meeting with Villavicencio, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, in a post on X, said that the Indian delegation had briefed her “on the sequence of events, from the Pahalgam terror attack to India’s calibrated response under Operation Sindoor.”

The MPs also met members of Colombia’s Congress, including Alejandro Toro, president of the Second Commission, which handles international relations, and Jaime Raul.

During their visit, Colombian leaders gifted Tharoor a wool poncho and traditional hat. The delegation also interacted with the Consejo Colombiano de Relaciones Internacionales (CORI), a leading foreign affairs think tank, and paid tribute at the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Tadeo University.

Tharoor is leading a cross-party Indian delegation that includes BJP’s Tejasvi Surya, Bhubaneswar Kalita, and Shashank Mani Tripathi; GM Harish Balayogi of the Telugu Desam Party; Milind Murli Deora of the Shiv Sena; Sarfaraz Ahmad of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha; and Shambhavi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).

The delegation has already visited Guyana and Panama — both non-permanent members of the Security Council — and will next travel to Brazil and then Washington, DC.

    Source: Government of India (4)

Powerhouse Mumbai Indians kept alive their hopes of reaching the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a 20-run victory against Gujarat Titans in the eliminator of the 10-team league on Friday.

Electing to bat, Mumbai racked up a commanding 228-5 after their frontline batters hit a combined 17 sixes.

Gujarat managed 208-6 in reply despite defiant knocks by opener Sai Sudharshan (80) and all-rounder Washington Sundar (48).

Five-time champions Mumbai will play Punjab Kings on Sunday for a place in Tuesday’s final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

After Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya elected to bat, Jonny Bairstow, replacing Ryan Rickelton, smashed 47 off 22 balls in his first match of the season in a blistering opening stand of 84 with Rohit Sharma.

Rohit, dropped twice early in his knock, struck 81 to punish Gujarat.

Suryakumar Yadav (33), Tilak Varma (25) and Pandya (22 not out) produced whirlwind cameos to take Mumbai past the 200-mark.

The chase was steep and Gujarat stuttered early in their reply losing skipper Shubman Gill trapped lbw by Trent Boult in the opening over of the innings.

Kusal Mendis (20) fell hit wicket but Sudharsan, the tournament’s leading scorer, revived Gujarat’s chase with his sixth fifty of the tournament.

He found an able ally in Sundar who smashed Boult for back-to-back sixes to turn the pressure back on Mumbai.

Pandya brought back Jasprit Bumrah and the pace bowler slipped in a yorker between Sundar’s legs to flatten his leg stump.

South African Richard Gleeson bowled Sudharsan as Mumbai reclaimed control of the contest through their seamers.

    Source: Government of India (4)

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday announced a major expansion in the country’s national AI infrastructure and talent development ecosystem. Speaking at the ‘IndiaAI – Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India’ event in New Delhi, the Minister said India’s national compute capacity has now crossed 34,000 GPUs, bolstered by the addition of 15,916 new units to the existing 18,417.

The announcement was accompanied by the selection of three more startups to develop indigenous foundation models under the IndiaAI Mission, following a rigorous multi-stage expert evaluation process.

Calling the expansion of GPU infrastructure a critical enabler for India’s AI ambitions, Vaishnaw reiterated the government’s commitment to democratizing access to technology. “Technology should not be left in the hands of a few. It is important that a larger section of society can access it, develop new solutions, and get better opportunities. That’s the philosophy behind the IndiaAI Mission,” he said.

The Minister urged the newly selected startups to aim for a top-five global position in their respective domains and highlighted the Mission’s progress across its key pillars: compute infrastructure, foundational models, safety standards, open datasets, and talent development.

As part of this effort, 367 datasets have already been uploaded to AI Kosh, India’s AI-specific open data repository.

The IndiaAI Foundation Model pillar, which focuses on building large-scale AI models trained on India-specific data, received over 500 proposals since the call was launched. On April 26, Sarvam AI was selected to build India’s sovereign LLM ecosystem, including a 120-billion parameter open-source model for public service use cases like Citizen Connect 2047 and AI4Pragati.

Now, three more proposals have been greenlit. Soket AI will build an open-source 120-billion parameter model optimized for India’s linguistic diversity, targeting applications in defense, education, and healthcare. Gnani AI will develop a 14-billion parameter multilingual Voice AI foundation model for real-time speech processing and reasoning. Gan AI will focus on building a 70-billion parameter multilingual model aimed at achieving superhuman text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities.

The compute expansion has been supported by seven industry partners who offered competitive commercials across different GPU categories. These include Cyfuture India Pvt. Ltd., Ishan Infotech Ltd., Locuz Enterprise Solutions Ltd., Netmagic IT Services Pvt. Ltd., Sify Digital Services Ltd., Vensysco Technologies Ltd., and Yotta Data Services Pvt. Ltd. This shared GPU pool will provide a common AI training and inference platform for startups, researchers, and government agencies.

As part of the IndiaAI Applications Development Initiative, the winners of the IndiaAI I4C CyberGuard AI Hackathon were also announced. Jointly organized with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), Ministry of Home Affairs, the hackathon led to the development of AI-based solutions capable of interpreting handwritten FIRs, screenshots, and audio files to better classify cybercrime complaints and detect evolving crime patterns.

IndiaAI, an independent business division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), serves as the implementing agency for the IndiaAI Mission. It aims to democratize the benefits of AI, strengthen India’s position as a global AI leader, and promote ethical and responsible AI use across sectors.

Goa has officially become a 100 per cent literate state, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Friday. The declaration was made on the occasion of the 39th Goa Statehood Day and marks a key milestone in the state’s education journey.

Speaking at an event in Panaji, Sawant credited the success to the implementation of the ULLAS Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram (Understanding for Lifelong Learning for All in Society), also known as the New India Literacy Programme (NILP), a centrally sponsored initiative aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

“Our sustained collective efforts to strengthen the education sector with new advancements and NEP 2020 have yielded results,” the Chief Minister said.

Launched with the goal of achieving nationwide literacy by 2030, the ULLAS programme targets individuals aged 15 and above who missed out on formal education. It focuses on functional literacy — reading, writing, and numeracy — while also addressing financial literacy and essential life skills.

In Goa, the campaign was implemented through a network of schools, supported by Resource Adult Trainee Coordinators (RATCs) and a wide volunteer base that included retired teachers, NSS units, teacher trainees, and education professionals.

To support learners, the state developed multilingual primers in Konkani, Marathi, Hindi, and English, tailored to adult education needs.

Officials said a total of 2,981 non-literate individuals were identified across the state’s 12 talukas and brought into the fold of the programme. “This is not just a statistical achievement; it is a social transformation,” an education department official said.

The first round of negotiations for the India-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) concluded successfully in New Delhi, marking a major step towards enhancing bilateral economic cooperation. The negotiations began on May 26, following the signing of the Terms of Reference on May 8.

The opening ceremony was inaugurated by India’s Commerce Secretary, Sunil Barthwal, in the presence of the Ambassador of Chile to India, H.E. Juan Angulo.

During the inauguration, Barthwal emphasized that the CEPA would pave the way for a deeper economic partnership between India and Chile and contribute to the creation of strengthened global value chains.

The initiative follows the momentum generated during the State Visit of the President of Chile, H.E. Gabriel Boric Font, to India in April 2025, where both countries welcomed the launch of CEPA negotiations. President Boric described India as a priority partner for Chile and stressed the importance of developing strategies for enhanced and diversified trade.

Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Boric expressed support for an agreement that is balanced, ambitious, comprehensive, and mutually beneficial, with the goal of achieving deeper economic integration between the two countries.

Over the course of the round, discussions were held across various thematic areas covering trade, services, investment, economic cooperation, and strategic sectors. The CEPA is envisioned to unlock the full potential of India-Chile trade and commercial ties, leading to increased employment, stronger bilateral trade, and sustained economic growth.

The two sides have agreed to continue engagement through intersessional virtual discussions to address outstanding matters ahead of the next round of negotiations, which is expected to take place in July or August 2025. Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda, convened a high-level review meeting with health ministers from six States and Union Territories to assess the progress on the elimination of Tuberculosis (TB) and Measles-Rubella, and to review fund utilization under the PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) and the 15th Finance Commission.

During the meeting, Nadda lauded the states for their active participation in the 100-day Intensified TB-Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, which led to the screening of over 12.97 crore individuals. The campaign identified more than 7.19 lakh TB cases, including 2.85 lakh asymptomatic patients, and has now been scaled to cover all districts across the nation.

Highlighting critical performance indicators, the Union Minister emphasized the importance of monitoring presumptive TB case examination rates, NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) coverage, treatment success rates, and implementation of nutritional support schemes for TB patients.

The Union Minister also urged greater Jan Bhagidari (public participation), calling for the active involvement of Panchayati Raj Institutions, Municipal Corporations, and other local bodies. He reiterated the national goal to reduce TB incidence to 47 cases and TB-related mortality to below 3 deaths per lakh population.

Nadda pressed states to fine-tune their TB elimination strategies, especially focusing on high-risk groups such as migrant workers, slum dwellers, HIV-positive individuals, alcoholics, and chain smokers. He called for expanded access to rapid diagnostic tools like NAAT and enhanced participation in support schemes such as the Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana and Ni-kshay Mitra, noting gaps in implementation that need urgent attention.

On the measles and rubella front, the Union Health Minister lauded the states’ efforts but emphasized that full elimination remains a distant goal in several districts. He stressed strengthening immunization drives, especially targeting children who have missed their second dose of the vaccine.

Shifting focus to health infrastructure, Nadda underscored the urgency of accelerating implementation under PM-ABHIM and the 15th Finance Commission, as only one year remains for optimal fund utilization. He highlighted the need to fast-track projects, resolve land clearance issues, and expedite the establishment of NCDC (National Centre for Disease Control) branches sanctioned in Kolkata, Meghalaya, Bhopal, and a BSL-3 laboratory in Surat, Gujarat.

States presented updates on their progress, shared best practices, and discussed challenges and strategies for improvement.

Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava and senior officials from the Union Health Ministry were also present during the meeting.

  • Global universities seek to lure US-bound students amid Trump crackdown

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Universities around the world are seeking to offer refuge for students impacted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s crackdown on academic institutions, targeting top talent and a slice of the billions of dollars in academic revenue in the United States.

Osaka University, one of the top ranked in Japan, is offering tuition fee waivers, research grants and help with travel arrangements for students and researchers at U.S. institutions who want to transfer.

Japan’s Kyoto University and Tokyo University are also considering similar schemes, while Hong Kong has instructed its universities to attract top talent from the United States. China’s Xi’an Jiaotong University has appealed for students at Harvard, singled out in Trump’s crackdown, promising “streamlined” admissions and “comprehensive” support.

Trump’s administration has enacted massive funding cuts for academic research, curbed visas for foreign students – especially those from China – and plans to hike taxes on elite schools.

Trump alleges top U.S. universities are cradles of anti-American movements. In a dramatic escalation, his administration last week revoked Harvard’s ability to enrol foreign students, a move later blocked by a federal judge.

Masaru Ishii, dean of the graduate school of medicine at Osaka University, described the impact on U.S. universities as “a loss for all of humanity”.

Japan aims to ramp up its number of foreign students to 400,000 over the next decade, from around 337,000 currently.

Jessica Turner, CEO of Quacquarelli Symonds, a London-based analytics firm that ranks universities globally, said other leading universities around the world were trying to attract students unsure of going to the United States.

Germany, France and Ireland are emerging as particularly attractive alternatives in Europe, she said, while in the Asia-Pacific, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, and mainland China are rising in profile.

    SWITCHING SCHOOLS

Chinese students have been particularly targeted in Trump’s crackdown, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday pledging to “aggressively” crack down on their visas.

More than 275,000 Chinese students are enrolled in hundreds of U.S. colleges, providing a major source of revenue for the schools and a crucial pipeline of talent for U.S. technology companies.

International students – 54% of them from India and China – contributed more than $50 billion to the U.S. economy in 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Trump’s crackdown comes at a critical period in the international student application process, as many young people prepare to travel to the U.S. in August to find accommodation and settle in before term starts.

Dai, 25, a Chinese student based in Chengdu, had planned to head to the U.S. to complete her master’s but is now seriously considering taking up an offer in Britain instead.

“The various policies (by the U.S. government) were a slap in my face,” she said, requesting to be identified only by her surname for privacy reasons. “I’m thinking about my mental health and it’s possible that I indeed change schools.”

Students from Britain and the European Union are also now more hesitant to apply to U.S. universities, said Tom Moon, deputy head of consultancy at Oxbridge Applications, which helps students in their university applications.

He said many international students currently enrolled at U.S. universities were now contacting the consultancy to discuss transfer options to Canada, the UK and Europe.

According to a survey the consultancy ran earlier this week, 54% of its clients said they were now “less likely” to enrol at an American university than they were at the start of the year.

There has been an uptick in applications to British universities from prospective students in the U.S., said Universities UK, an organisation that promotes British institutions. It cautioned, however, that it was too early to say whether that translates into more students enrolling.

    REPUTATIONAL EFFECTS

Ella Ricketts, an 18-year-old first year student at Harvard from Canada, said she receives a generous aid package paid for by the school’s donors and is concerned that she won’t be able to afford other options if forced to transfer.

“Around the time I was applying to schools, the only university across the Atlantic I considered was Oxford… However, I realised that I would not be able to afford the international tuition and there was no sufficient scholarship or financial aid available,” she said.

If Harvard’s ability to enrol foreign students is revoked, she would most likely apply to the University of Toronto, she said.

Analytics firm QS said overall visits to its ‘Study in America’ online guide have declined by 17.6% in the last year — with interest from India alone down over 50%.

“Measurable impacts on enrolment typically emerge within six to 18 months. Reputational effects, however, often linger far longer, particularly where visa uncertainty and shifting work rights play into perceptions of risk versus return,” said QS’ Turner.

That reputational risk, and the ensuing brain drain, could be even more damaging for U.S. institutions than the immediate economic hit from students leaving.

“If America turns these brilliant and talented students away, they will find other places to work and study,” said Caleb Thompson, a 20-year-old U.S. student at Harvard, who lives with eight international scholars.

  • Division between US and China is the biggest risk confronting world now, France’s Macron says

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that division between the two superpowers, the United States and China, is the main risk currently confronting the world as he emphasized the need for building new coalitions between Paris and partners in the Indo-Pacific.

Macron is visiting the region as France and the European Union aim to strengthen their commercial ties in Asia to offset uncertainty over U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff measures.

“I will be clear, France is a friend and an ally of the United States, and is a friend, and we do cooperate – even if sometimes we disagree and compete – with China,” said Macron, who was speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s premier defence forum, alongside a two-day state visit to Singapore.

The French president said Asia and Europe have a common interest in preventing the disintegration of the global order.

“The time for non-alignment has undoubtedly passed, but the time for coalitions of action has come, and requires that countries capable of acting together give themselves every means to do so,” Macron said.

Macron is following leaders of China, Japan and other European countries in visiting the region in recent weeks, in a sign of south east Asia’s strategic importance amid uncertainties on global supply chains and trade.

  • India’s real GDP grows at 6.5% in FY 2024-25; Q4 sees strong 7.4% expansion

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), has released the Provisional Estimates of Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the financial year 2024–25, along with the Quarterly Estimates for the January–March period (Q4) of the same year.

India’s real GDP at constant (2011–12) prices is estimated to have grown by 6.5% in FY 2024–25, reaching ₹187.97 lakh crore, compared to ₹176.51 lakh crore in 2023–24. At current prices, the nominal GDP has increased by 9.8%, amounting to ₹330.68 lakh crore, up from ₹301.23 lakh crore in the previous financial year.

Real Gross Value Added (GVA) for the year is estimated at ₹171.87 lakh crore, reflecting a 6.4% growth from ₹161.51 lakh crore in FY 2023–24. The nominal GVA stands at ₹300.22 lakh crore, a 9.5% increase over the previous year.

In the fourth quarter (January to March) of FY 2024–25, real GDP rose to ₹51.35 lakh crore, a 7.4% increase from ₹47.82 lakh crore in Q4 of FY 2023–24. Nominal GDP during the same period reached ₹88.18 lakh crore, reflecting a 10.8% growth. Real GVA in Q4 stood at ₹45.76 lakh crore, up 6.8% from ₹42.86 lakh crore, while nominal GVA reached ₹79.46 lakh crore, marking a 9.6% increase.

Among the key drivers of this economic performance, the construction sector led with an annual growth of 9.4%, accelerating to 10.8% growth in Q4. The public administration, defence, and other services sector followed with 8.9% growth during the year and 8.7% in Q4. Financial, real estate, and professional services saw a 7.2% increase annually and 7.8% growth in the final quarter.

The primary sector, which includes agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing, mining, and quarrying, registered a growth rate of 4.4% in FY 2024–25, a notable improvement from 2.7% in the previous year. In Q4 alone, the sector grew by 5.0%, up significantly from 0.8% in the same quarter of the previous year.

Private Final Consumption Expenditure (PFCE) recorded a 7.2% growth during FY 2024–25, reflecting stronger consumer spending compared to 5.6% in FY 2023–24. Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF), an indicator of investment demand, grew by 7.1% for the full year and 9.4% in Q4.

The GDP estimates were compiled using the benchmark-indicator method, based on the extrapolation of the previous year’s estimates using sector-specific performance indicators. These include data from the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), financial performance of listed companies, crop and livestock output, energy and construction material production, transport and trade data, banking and insurance activity, GST collections, and government expenditure records.

The estimates also reflect the tax and subsidy data available from both the Central and State Governments. For tax calculations, both GST and non-GST revenues were considered, and for subsidies, major components such as food, urea, petroleum, and nutrient-based subsidies were accounted for.

These provisional figures are subject to revision based on updated inputs from source agencies. Users are advised to interpret the data with this in mind.

The next release of GDP data, covering the first quarter of FY 2025–26 (April–June), is scheduled for 29 August 2025.

The domestic market closed lower in Friday’s trading session. At the end of trading, the Sensex was down 182.01 points or 0.22 per cent at 81,451.01 while the Nifty was down 82.9 points or 0.33 per cent at 24,750.70.

Midcap and smallcap closed almost flat. The Nifty Midcap 100 index closed down 37.25 points at 57,420.00 and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index closed down 6.10 points at 17,883.30.

Metal and IT stocks led the decline. Nifty Metal index closed down by 1.69 per cent and Nifty IT index down by 1.15 per cent. Apart from this, auto, pharma and FMCG sectors also saw a decline. Only PSU bank, financial services and media indices closed in the green.

The Nifty remained volatile with a slightly negative bias on the first day of the June series. On the smaller time frame, the index has formed a bearish moving average crossover.

“The RSI on the hourly chart indicates bearish price momentum, suggesting short-term weakness. Additionally, signs of exhaustion are visible on the daily RSI, accompanied by a strong negative divergence,” said Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities.

However, Nifty has been struggling to move beyond a certain level. Immediate support is placed at 24,700; a breach below this level could lead to a decline towards 24,500. On the higher side, 24,800 is likely to act as a crucial resistance, as call writers have built significant positions at that level.

The impact of GDP figures will be seen on the market in coming trading sessions, said analysts.

A range-bound movement continued in the market, with the temporary reinstatement of US tariffs by the appeal court influencing investors to stay sidelined.

“The global market may contend with macroeconomic concerns as the global trade landscape has yet to see stability, which may navigate a short-term consolidation. Meanwhile, FII inflows continued due to the volatility in the US 10-year yield and an expectation of solid domestic Q4 GDP data later today and a rate cut by RBI,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.

Rupee traded weak by 8 paise at 85.52 as the dollar index gained 0.25 per cent to 99.46.

Historically, the two franchises have met seven times in the IPL, with the Titans holding a clear upper hand over the five-time champions. Their most recent encounter earlier this season also ended in Gujarat’s favour, adding to their psychological edge.

In just three seasons since their inception, the Gujarat Titans have made a significant impact — lifting the trophy in 2022 and finishing runners-up in 2023. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, bring with them a rich legacy as one of the league’s most decorated franchises, with five IPL titles — a record they share with Chennai Super Kings.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a weather alert for Assam, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next 2–3 days, particularly across the western and southern districts of the state.

The inclement weather is expected to intensify within the next 24 hours, prompting authorities to ramp up emergency preparedness.

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, a well-marked low-pressure area lay over the northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast, at 8:30 am on Friday. This system is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southward with altitude. It is projected to gradually move northward and intensify into a depression over the north Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.

Under the influence of this developing weather system, widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to lash several districts, including Cachar, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Chirang, West Karbi Anglong, Bajali, Baksa, Tamulpur, Nalbari, Kamrup (Metro and Rural), Darrang, Udalguri, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dima Hasao, and others.

In Guwahati, authorities are bracing for potential urban challenges such as waterlogging, slow-moving traffic, tree falls, and localised landslides, particularly in vulnerable zones.

The city’s disaster management teams are on high alert and closely tracking the evolving situation.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has appealed to residents across the state, especially those in Guwahati, to exercise caution and take preventive measures.

Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, and those in low-lying or landslide-prone areas are urged to remain vigilant.

“Daily commuters and long-distance travellers should plan accordingly. Stay updated with official weather alerts and follow local advisories,” an ASDMA spokesperson said, adding that real-time updates will be provided to keep the public informed throughout the weather event.

Authorities reiterated the importance of preparedness to minimise risks associated with the expected deluge, urging the public to prioritise safety until conditions improve.

  • Serbia says it will investigate Russian accusations that it ships arms to Ukraine

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Serbia and Russia will jointly investigate how Serbia-made ammunition reached Ukraine, President Aleksandar Vucic said, after Moscow accused Belgrade of exporting arms to the government in Kyiv.

The SVR, the Russian foreign intelligence service, accused Belgrade of “a stab in the back”, alleging Serbia’s defence manufacturers were selling ammunition and weapons to Ukraine.

“They (arms sales) have one clear purpose – to kill and maim Russian military personnel and the civilian population,” the SVR said in a statement posted on its website on Thursday.

The SVR said Serbia sends arms shipments to Ukraine through NATO intermediaries, including the Czech Republic, Poland and Bulgaria, as well as some African countries.

Serbia maintains a balancing act between its historical ties with Russia and the European Union. Belgrade has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but has so far refused to join Western sanctions against Moscow.

Vucic told state RTS TV he discussed Serbian arms exports to Ukraine with Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin when he visited Moscow on May 9, and denied some of the SVR’s allegations.

“We have formed a working group, together with Russian partners, to establish the facts. Some of the things that have been said are not true,” he told RTS TV late on Thursday.

According to a classified Pentagon document, Serbia in 2023 agreed to supply arms to Kyiv, despite the country’s professed military neutrality. Moscow has criticised Belgrade several times over the issue.

The Serbian defence industry produces weapons and ammunition with designs largely stemming from the ex-Soviet military technology of the 1980s, similar to those used both in Ukraine and Russia.

“Our factories must live and work. About 24,000 people work directly in the defense industry,” Vucic said.

Serbia wants to join the European Union, but Russia, a Slavic and Orthodox Christian ally, remains its biggest gas supplier, and the country’s sole oil refinery is majority-owned by Gazprom and Gazprom Neft.

Although Belgrade has refused to join Western sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, it has condemned Moscow’s policies in the United Nations and expressed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, including territories held by Russia. Vucic has also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at least three times.

  • Centre issues norms to curb illegal sale of radio equipment on e-com sites

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, on Friday issued norms to curb the illegal sale of radio equipment on e-commerce sites.

The Guidelines for the Prevention and Regulation of Illegal Listing and Sale of Radio Equipment including Walkie Talkies on E-Commerce Platforms, 2025, aims to curb the unauthorised sale of wireless devices that may pose risks to consumer safety.

The devices can mislead consumers regarding their legal position and interfere with critical communication networks, including those used by law enforcement and emergency services, said the Ministry.

The guidelines were finalised following extensive inter-ministerial consultations with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), where it was observed that walkie-talkies are being sold on e-commerce platforms without mandatory and clear disclosures regarding the requirement of wireless operating license or compliance with applicable laws.

The product listings for walkie-talkies do not specify whether the device requires a license from the concerned authority for use.

“The omission of details such as frequency range, licensing obligations under the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, or the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933, and the Use of Low Power, Very Low Power Short Range Radio Frequency Devices (Exemption from Licensing Requirement) Rules, 2018 and the potential legal consequences of unauthorised use, misleads consumers into believing that the devices are freely operable by the general public,” the Ministry said.

Further, the guidelines mandate that only authorised and compliant walkie-talkie devices operating on permitted frequencies are listed for sale on online platforms.

It stated that product listings must specify frequency ranges and other technical parameters and include proof of regulatory approval (equipment type approval). It also requires e-commerce entities to undertake due diligence and verify regulatory compliance, including licensing where applicable, and listings lacking frequency information or necessary certification should be taken down.

The new norms also prohibit misleading advertisements or product descriptions that may misinform consumers about the legal usage of such devices.

Sellers should ensure that equipment listed for sale does not operate on frequencies that are not exempted from the requirement of frequency assignment and authorisation by the DOT and ensure that the frequency bands on the product description are clearly labelled.

The guidelines also outline penalties and enforcement mechanisms for violations by the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

Previously, the CCPA issued 13 notices against 16, 970 product listings to leading digital marketplaces against the listing and sale of walkie-talkies on e-commerce platforms. These were found without proper frequency disclosure, licensing information, or Equipment Type Approval (ETA), thereby, violating the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

“These platforms are under constant monitoring and examination, in addition to notification of the guidelines,” the Ministry said.

Torrential monsoon rains wreaked havoc across Kerala and coastal Karnataka on Friday, triggering landslides, flooding, widespread power outages, and disrupting daily life in both states.

Authorities have issued red alerts in several districts as the situation continues to worsen.

In Kerala, heavy downpours led to extensive damage and waterlogging across multiple districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for Idukki, Kannur, and Kasargod, and orange alerts for 11 other districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, and Kottayam.

Flooding in low-lying areas of Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta forced hundreds of residents to seek refuge in relief camps.

State Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian, expressing concern about the worsening situation in his hometown Chengannur, said: “Am told by people in the know of things that if the rain waters do not come down, what was witnessed in 2018 might happen.”

“All district and revenue officials are on high alert and have been instructed to act swiftly if conditions deteriorate further,” Cherian told IANS.

Public life has been significantly disrupted – educational institutions were closed in 11 out of 14 districts, train services were cancelled or delayed, and road transport suffered due to landslides and uprooted trees.

Over five million homes experienced power outages, with the Kerala State Electricity Board estimating damages worth Rs 120 crore. In a tragic incident, an 85-year-old woman died in Ernakulam district after a tree fell on her during the storm.

In coastal Karnataka, a six-year-old girl identified as Fathima Nayeema lost her life in a landslide in Montepadavu, Ullal taluk, near Mangaluru. The landslide buried two houses, prompting emergency rescue operations. While two people were pulled out safely, rescue efforts for three others trapped under debris are ongoing.

In Mangaluru, relentless rain flooded several areas, with around 50 houses inundated in Kallapu, leading to emergency evacuations. The district administration declared a holiday for all schools, Anganwadi centres, and colleges, and issued strict advisories against venturing near the sea. Similar precautions were taken in Udupi, where educational institutions were also shut.

The IMD has issued a red alert in Karnataka for Mangaluru, Udupi, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan until June 2, while orange alerts are in place for Karwar, Shivamogga, Mysuru, Kalaburagi, and Bidar.

Emergency helpline numbers have been issued, and a ban has been imposed on visiting beaches, rivers, and waterfalls in the affected coastal regions.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru remained under a cloudy sky, with weather authorities predicting more rainfall in the coming days.

  • PM Modi inaugurates projects worth ₹47,600 crore in Kanpur, highlights India’s self-reliance in defence sector

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation stone for development and defence-related projects worth approximately ₹47,600 crore during his visit to Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Addressing a large public gathering, the Prime Minister said that the visit, initially scheduled for April 24, was postponed following the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam.

Paying tribute to Shubham Dwivedi, a resident of Kanpur who lost his life in the attack, the Prime Minister said the entire nation shares the sorrow and anguish of the victims. He also highlighted the success of Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the attacks, noting that the Indian armed forces destroyed terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and forced the adversary to plead for de-escalation.

Reaffirming India’s stance against terrorism, the Prime Minister said, “Our response will be decisive. The timing and nature of our actions will be determined solely by our forces. India will no longer tolerate nuclear blackmail or make distinctions between state and non-state actors in Pakistan.” He added that Operation Sindoor is not yet over, and India will eliminate threats wherever they exist.

Highlighting the strength of indigenous defence capabilities, PM Modi said Operation Sindoor showcased the impact of ‘Make in India’, with domestically produced weapons like the BrahMos missile hitting targets with precision. He reiterated the government’s commitment to making India self-reliant in defence, stating that the era of dependence on foreign countries for military needs is ending.

He also pointed to the major role Uttar Pradesh is playing in this transformation, noting that seven historic ordnance factories, including the one in Kanpur, have now been converted into advanced defence production units. He underlined that the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, especially the Kanpur node, is emerging as a key centre for the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in the defence sector.

The Prime Minister informed the gathering that AK-203 rifle production has already commenced in Amethi, and the BrahMos missile system now has a new base in Uttar Pradesh, signalling the state’s growing stature in defence manufacturing. He added that with these developments, Uttar Pradesh is poised to lead India’s journey towards becoming a major defence exporter.

The Prime Minister said that these investments will not only strengthen India’s defence sector but also create new employment opportunities for thousands of youth in the region. He expressed confidence that the upcoming defence-related projects will boost the state’s economy and industrial capabilities.

  • Operation Sindoor is India’s frontal assault on terrorism, says Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh termed Operation Sindoor as India’s bold and decisive response to terrorism, emphasizing that the mission is “not over, but just a pause.” Addressing officers and sailors aboard India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, off the Goa coast on Friday, Singh delivered a powerful message to Pakistan: any future misadventure will be met with the full force of the Indian Navy.

“Operation Sindoor is not just a military action, it is India’s frontal assault on terrorism,” said Singh. “If Pakistan indulges in any unethical or hostile acts, it will face the firepower and resolve of our Navy.”

The Defence Minister praised the Indian Navy’s silent yet impactful role during the operation. He said the powerful Carrier Battle Group played a crucial role in keeping the Pakistani Navy confined to its ports, ensuring it did not intervene during the coordinated Indian military response.

Sending a strong message to Islamabad, Singh stated, “The time is up for the dangerous game of terrorism that Pakistan has played since Independence. India will not hesitate to take every necessary step to eliminate terrorism.” He reiterated that India retains the right to act against terrorist threats both across the border and in the seas, and called for Pakistan to hand over terrorists Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar—both UN-designated and accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

On the subject of talks with Pakistan, Singh was clear: “Dialogue will only happen on terrorism and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). If Pakistan is serious about talks, it should first hand over the terrorists to India so that justice can be delivered.”

Commending the Navy’s role in Operation Sindoor, Singh detailed the precision and readiness of India’s maritime forces. Within 96 hours of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, Indian naval units conducted successful missile and torpedo firings along both the western and eastern seaboards. The Navy’s aggressive deployment and coordination with the Air Force during airstrikes on terror bases underscored the seamless integration among India’s armed forces.

He emphasized the power projection of the Carrier Battle Group as a symbol of India’s intent and capability. “The Indian Navy’s combat acumen and strategic might have broken the morale of the enemy,” he said, urging continued operational preparedness.

Rajnath Singh highlighted the transformation of the Indian Navy into a strategic force that extends beyond regional responsibilities. “Today, the Navy is not just the guardian of the Indian Ocean but a force that projects India’s growing global influence,” he said, noting the Navy’s growing focus on cyber, data dominance, and strategic deterrence.

Drawing a historical parallel, Singh recalled the pivotal role played by the original INS Vikrant during the 1961 Liberation of Goa. Now in its modern incarnation, the carrier once again leads India’s maritime resolve against terrorism.

Singh was accompanied by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, and other senior officials. He also reviewed frontline warships that were part of the Carrier Battle Group during the operation.

  • Astronomers scrutinize a star behaving unlike any other

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Astronomers have spotted a star acting unlike any other ever observed as it unleashes a curious combination of radio waves and X-rays, pegging it as an exotic member of a class of celestial objects first identified only three years ago.

It is located in the Milky Way galaxy about 15,000 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Scutum, flashing every 44 minutes in both radio waves and X-ray emissions. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km).

The researchers said it belongs to a class of objects called “long-period radio transients,” known for bright bursts of radio waves that appear every few minutes to several hours.

This is much longer than the rapid pulses in radio waves typically detected from pulsars – a type of speedily rotating neutron star, the dense collapsed core of a massive star after its death. Pulsars appear, as viewed from Earth, to be blinking on and off on timescales of milliseconds to seconds.

“What these objects are and how they generate their unusual signals remain a mystery,” said astronomer Ziteng Wang of Curtin University in Australia, lead author of the study published this week in the journal Nature.

In the new study, the researchers used data from NASA’s orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory, the ASKAP telescope in Australia and other telescopes.

While the emission of radio waves from the newly identified object is similar to the approximately 10 other known examples of this class, it is the only one sending out X-rays, according to astrophysicist and study co-author Nanda Rea of the Institute of Space Sciences in Barcelona.

The researchers have some hypotheses about the nature of this star. They said it may be a magnetar, a spinning neutron star with an extreme magnetic field, or perhaps a white dwarf, a highly compact stellar ember, with a close and quick orbit around a small companion star in what is called a binary system.

“However, neither of them could explain all observational features we saw,” Wang said.

Stars with up to eight times the mass of our sun appear destined to end up as a white dwarf. They eventually burn up all the hydrogen they use as fuel. Gravity then causes them to collapse and blow off their outer layers in a “red giant” stage, eventually leaving behind a compact core roughly the diameter of Earth – the white dwarf.

The observed radio waves potentially could have been generated by the interaction between the white dwarf and the hypothesized companion star, the researchers said.

“The radio brightness of the object varies a lot. We saw no radio emission from the object before November 2023. And in February 2024, we saw it became extremely bright. Fewer than 30 objects in the sky have ever reached such brightness in radio waves. Remarkably, at the same time, we also detected X-ray pulses from the object. We can still detect it in radio, but much fainter,” Wang said.

Wang said it is thrilling to see a new type of behavior for stars.

“The X-ray detection came from NASA’s Chandra space telescope. That part was a lucky break. The telescope was actually pointing at something else, but just happened to catch the source during its ‘crazy’ bright phase. A coincidence like that is really, really rare – like finding a needle in a haystack,” Wang said.

    Source: Government of India (4)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday took a sharp dig at the opposition during his public rally in Bikramganj, Rohtas district, accusing them of deceiving Bihar for decades and now attempting to misuse the narrative of social justice to regain power. Speaking to a large gathering, PM Modi said that under previous regimes, Bihar’s poor and marginalized communities—especially Dalits, backward classes, and tribal groups—were denied basic amenities and forced to migrate in search of better lives.

“For decades, Dalits, backward classes, and tribal communities in Bihar lacked even basic sanitation,” PM Modi said. He added that many were denied access to banking services, remained homeless, and lived without proper shelter. “Is this the social justice promised by the opposition? I say there can be no greater injustice than this,” he asserted.

The Prime Minister criticized opposition parties for not genuinely caring about the struggles of marginalized communities. He also censured them for bringing foreign delegations to Bihar merely to highlight poverty, instead of focusing on development work. PM Modi observed that after losing support among Dalits and other marginalized groups due to their failures, the opposition is now trying to revive its political identity by invoking social justice.

In contrast, PM Modi highlighted the “new dawn” of social justice under the current government. He said his administration has ensured access to essential services for the poor, aiming to reach 100% of eligible beneficiaries. “Four crore new houses have been provided, and three crore women are being empowered through the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative,” PM Modi said. Over 12 crore households now enjoy tap water connections, improving living standards nationwide.

He further noted that every senior citizen above 70 is entitled to free medical treatment worth up to ₹5 lakh, while free ration is provided monthly to support the needy. “Our government stands firmly with every poor and underprivileged individual, ensuring their well-being and upliftment,” PM Modi affirmed.

PM Modi praised Bihar’s launch of the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Samagra Seva Abhiyan, under which 22 essential welfare schemes are delivered simultaneously to villages, ensuring no eligible family is left behind. He announced that over 30,000 service camps have already connected lakhs of beneficiaries to these programmes, bringing the state closer to the vision of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Karpoori Thakur, Babu Jagjivan Ram and Jayaprakash Narayan.

On the infrastructure front, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the Rs 29,930 crore Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project Stage-II (3×800 MW) in Aurangabad district. The project aims to boost energy security for Bihar and eastern India, stimulate industrial growth, create jobs, and provide affordable electricity.

He also laid foundation stones for multiple road projects, including the four-laning of Patna–Arrah–Sasaram section of NH-119A, six-laning of the Varanasi–Ranchi–Kolkata highway (NH-319B) and Ramnagar–Kacchi Dargah stretch (NH-119D), and the construction of a new Ganga bridge between Buxar and Bharauli. These projects will improve high-speed connectivity across Bihar, enhancing trade and regional integration.

PM Modi also inaugurated the four-laning of Patna–Gaya–Dobhi section of NH-22 worth around Rs 5,520 crore and the elevated highway and at-grade improvements in Gopalganj town on NH-27.

Furthering his commitment to rail infrastructure, PM Modi dedicated the third rail line between Son Nagar and Mohammad Ganj, a project worth over Rs 1,330 crore, to the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday underscored the crucial role of security and peace in unlocking Bihar’s development potential, recalling that the state’s journey from the days of ‘Jungle Raj’ to prosperity began under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s leadership. Addressing a large public gathering in Bihar, he noted that dilapidated highways, rundown rail networks, and scant air connectivity now belong to the past.

PM Modi highlighted the transformation of Bihar’s aviation landscape. “Once, Patna was our state’s only airport,” he said. “Today, Darbhanga Airport is fully operational, offering direct flights to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.” He further announced that the new terminal at Patna Airport—capable of handling one crore passengers annually—was inaugurated just the previous evening. An additional ₹1,400 crore investment will now be channelled into developing Bihta Airport, he added.

Turning to roads and bridges, the Prime Minister described the rapid expansion of multi-lane highways. He cited the four-lane corridors from Patna to Buxar and Gaya to Dobhi, as well as the Patna–Ara–Sasaram Greenfield Corridor, which he said is progressing at a “swift pace.” “New bridges over the Ganga, Son, Gandak, and Kosi rivers are not just steel and concrete; they are gateways to opportunity,” Modi remarked, pointing out that these projects—worth several thousand crores—are generating employment for thousands of young people and fueling growth in tourism and trade.

On railways, PM Modi lauded the introduction of world-class Vande Bharat trains in Bihar and the ongoing doubling and tripling of key lines. “Work is advancing rapidly from Chhapra to Muzaffarpur to Katihar,” he noted, adding that multi-tracking between Son Nagar and Andal will significantly enhance train movement. “Over 100 trains now halt at Sasaram, a testament to our improved connectivity,” he said, while lamenting that previous administrations had exploited recruitment processes, delaying the railway network’s modernization.

Emphasizing that development is incomplete without reliable power, the Prime Minister drew attention to Bihar’s remarkable growth in electricity consumption—now four times higher than a decade ago. He announced the construction of a major NTPC power plant at Nabinagar, with an outlay of ₹30,000 crore and a capacity of 1,500 megawatts. Projects for new thermal power plants in Buxar and Pirpainti have also been initiated, he added.

In a major step towards gender inclusivity in the Indian Armed Forces, the National Defence Academy (NDA) conducted its 148th Passing Out Parade on Friday, marking a historic milestone as the first batch of women cadets graduated. Held at the NDA campus in Khadakwasla, Pune, the event highlighted the growing role and representation of women in the nation’s military leadership.

The event was reviewed by General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd), the Governor of Mizoram and former Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). The ceremony saw attendance from proud families, senior military officials, and dignitaries from across the country.

Calling it a “significant and historic” occasion, General VK Singh praised the pioneering spirit of the graduating women cadets. “This marks a historic milestone in our collective journey towards inclusivity and empowerment. These women represent ‘Nari Shakti’—not just in women’s development, but in women-led development,” he said.

The parade signifies a turning point in the NDA’s 75-year history, where for the first time, women will join the ranks of commissioned officers after rigorous training alongside their male counterparts.

A day earlier, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended the increasing role of women in the armed forces while addressing a gathering in Goa at the flag-in ceremony of the Indian Navy sailing vessel INSV Tarini. The event celebrated the return of Lt Commander Dilna K and Lt Commander Roopa, who successfully completed a circumnavigation of the globe in double-handed mode as part of the ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama II’ mission. The duo became the first Indian women to achieve this feat with only two crew members on board.

The Defence Minister also highlighted the contribution of women during recent military operations, notably Operation Sindoor. “Women pilots and other female soldiers played a crucial role in India’s decisive actions against terrorism in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir,” Singh said.

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives and injured many more. The operation targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the elimination of over 100 militants affiliated with groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

“From the heights of Siachen to the depths of the ocean, Indian women are serving the nation with distinction. Today, the gates of Sainik Schools are open to girls, and 17 women cadets have graduated from the NDA this month. Their achievements have strengthened the security fabric of our country,” the Defence Minister added.

  • France may toughen stance on Israel if it continues blocking Gaza aid, Macron says

France could harden its position on Israel if it continues to block humanitarian aid to Gaza, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday, reiterating that Paris was committed to a two-state solution to resolve the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

“The humanitarian blockade is creating a situation that is untenable on the ground,” Macron said at a joint press conference in Singapore with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

“And so, if there is no response that meets the humanitarian situation in the coming hours and days, obviously, we will have to toughen our collective position,” Macron said, adding that France may consider applying sanctions against Israeli settlers.

“But I still hope that the government of Israel will change its stance and that we will finally have a humanitarian response”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has hit back at growing international pressure over the war in Gaza, the deadliest fighting in decades of conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Macron was in Singapore on a state visit and he will also deliver the keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s premier security forum, which runs this year from May 30-June 1.

Deep differences between Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel have stymied previous attempts to restore a ceasefire that broke down in March.

Under growing international pressure, Israel partially ended an 11-week long aid blockade on Gaza 10 days ago. It has allowed a limited amount of relief to be delivered via two avenues – the United Nations or the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

The French president said Paris is committed to working towards a political solution and reiterated his support for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Macron is leaning towards recognising a Palestinian state, diplomats and experts say, a move that could infuriate Israel and deepen Western splits.

French officials are weighing up the move ahead of a United Nations conference, which France and Saudi Arabia are co-hosting between June 17-20, to lay out the parameters for a roadmap to a Palestinian state, while ensuring Israel’s security.

Israel launched its campaign in Gaza in response to a Hamas attack in its south on October 7, 2023, that killed some 1,200 people and saw 251 Israelis taken hostage into Gaza, according to Israeli tallies.

The war since then has killed around 54,000 Palestinians, Palestinian health authorities say, more than in any other of the countless rounds of fighting between the two sides.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met 14-year-old cricket prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi and his parents at Patna Airport during his two-day visit to Bihar. The meeting took place shortly before the Prime Minister departed for a major public event in Bikramganj, where he is scheduled to inaugurate infrastructure projects worth ₹48,500 crore.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “At Patna airport, met the young cricketing sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi and his family. His cricketing skills are being admired all over the nation! My best wishes to him for his future endeavours.”

Suryavanshi, who has captured the nation’s attention during the IPL 2025 season, became the youngest player to score a century in the tournament’s history. He was signed by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.1 crore in the last auction and has scored 252 runs in seven matches, including a record-breaking 35-ball century and a half-century.

His recent performances have earned him a spot in India’s U19 squad for the England tour scheduled from June 24 to July 23. The tour includes a 50-over warm-up match, five Youth ODIs, and two multi-day matches against England U19.

Earlier this month, during the inauguration of the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 in Bihar, PM Modi had praised the youngster’s extraordinary achievements. “We have seen the outstanding performance of the son of Bihar, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, in the IPL,” the Prime Minister had said. “Behind his success lies not just talent, but tireless hard work and constant exposure at different levels of the game.”

Suryavanshi’s cricket journey has been historic. He made his first-class debut for Bihar at just 12 years and 284 days and scored a half-century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. On the international stage, he holds the record for the fastest youth Test century by an Indian, a 58-ball ton against Australia, and was instrumental in India’s campaign in the ACC U19 Asia Cup.

The young cricketer’s rise has been hailed as one of Indian cricket’s most remarkable stories in recent times, and his meeting with the Prime Minister is seen as both a recognition of his early success and encouragement for the road ahead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Karakat in Bihar on Friday, laid the foundation stone and dedicated multiple development projects worth over ₹48,520 crore, marking a major step towards boosting infrastructure and economic progress in the state.

Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister said he felt honoured to accelerate Bihar’s development from its sacred soil. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of the state for their continued support, especially acknowledging the presence and blessings of thousands of women in the audience. “The affection and trust shown by the people of Bihar, particularly our mothers and sisters, is a great source of strength,” he said.

During his address, Prime Minister Modi referred to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed several innocent lives. Recalling his earlier visit to Bihar in the aftermath of the attack, he said he had promised the nation that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. “Today, I stand before you having fulfilled that pledge. Our armed forces turned the hideouts of those who conspired from across the border into rubble,” he stated.

The Prime Minister underlined that the swift and decisive response by India’s forces had sent a strong message to the world. “This is the new India. The world has seen the power of the sindoor of our daughters. The terrorists, once emboldened by protection across the border, now cower in fear,” he added, referring to the military action termed Operation Sindoor.

Describing the operation as a testament to India’s growing strength and resolve, PM Modi said the country’s military struck key enemy positions, including airbases and military installations, within minutes. “This is the India of resilience, courage and swift action,” he asserted.

Paying tribute to Bihar’s legacy of bravery, the Prime Minister invoked the memory of Veer Kunwar Singh and noted the substantial contribution of the state’s youth to the Indian Army and Border Security Force (BSF). He praised the BSF’s valour during Operation Sindoor and described them as an unbreakable shield protecting India’s borders.

PM Modi also honoured BSF Sub-Inspector Imtiaz, a native of Bihar, who was martyred in the line of duty on May 10. “The sacrifice of Bihar’s brave son will always be remembered,” he said.

Reiterating his earlier statement from Bihar, the Prime Minister said that Operation Sindoor was just a glimpse of India’s capabilities. “This was only one arrow from our quiver,” he declared, reinforcing the message of a strong and assertive India.
