NEW YORK, 27 May — The United Nations has announced the 2024 recipients of the Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award and the Woman Police Officer of the Year Award.
Squadron Leader Sharon Mwinsote Syme of Ghana will receive the Military Gender Advocate Award and Chief Superintendent Zainab Gbla of Sierra Leone will receive the Woman Police Officer of the Year Award during a ceremony marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on 29 May.
The awards will be presented at United Nations Headquarters in New York by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Sharon Syme of Ghana has been named the 2024 Military Gender Advocate of the Year in recognition of her exceptional commitment in promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls during her tour of duty with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
Since her deployment in 2024 as the Mission’s Military Gender Adviser, Ms. Syme’s work has directly impacted local communities, ensuring the voices and needs of women and girls are integrated into security and peacebuilding initiatives.
As part of her efforts, she conducted an intensive health campaign for the women and men of the local communities on the dangers and health implications of gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices like child marriage.
Ms. Syme also helped strengthen the gender awareness and capacity of UNISFA’s military components, spearheading patrols composed of men and women able to address diverse community needs, and engaging with local women’s groups to promote trust and collaboration. Her approach emphasized inclusivity, respect and cultural awareness, setting a benchmark for gender-responsive peacekeeping operations.
“Squadron Leader Syme exemplifies the principles of gender advocacy in peacekeeping,” said Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. “Her dedication has not only improved the effectiveness of UNISFA’s operations, but also ensured that the mission is more reflective of and responsive to the communities it serves.”

Zainab Gbla of Sierra Leone has been named the Woman Police Officer of the Year for her innovative community engagement initiatives that helped strengthen relations between host communities and the mission while establishing new crime-reporting channels in Abyei, where there is no functional police service.
In an area that had no schools when she arrived, she initiated an educational programme, providing materials and visual aids for teaching disadvantaged children. She also established a mentorship programme for girls. Projects she also initiated to support crop cultivation and livestock sale at the local markets gave the women sustainable sources of income, allowing them to provide for their families and send their children to school in nearby Abyei town.
Currently serving as UNISFA’s Chief Police Training Officer, Ms. Gbla spent her teenage years displaced within her home country of Sierra Leone and later as a refugee in Guinea — experiences that motivated her to enter the police service and to empower women affected, like her, by conflict.
“Having been inspired by seeing the positive impact of the police first hand, including the rebuilding and restructuring of the Sierra Leone Police following years of conflict, Chief Superintendent Gbla embodies the work of the United Nations to improve lives and shape futures,” said Under-Secretary-General Lacroix.

About the Awardees
Chief Superintendent Zainab Mbalu Gbla joined the Sierra Leone Police in 2002, where she has since held various roles in operations, training and leadership. She has been serving with UNISFA since April 2023 as Officer-in-Charge of the Community-Based Disarmament Unit and UNPOL Chief Training Officer. This is her third peacekeeping deployment, after serving with the United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) in 2010–2013 and 2020–2021.
Squadron Leader Sharon Mwinsote Syme graduated from the Ghana Military Academy after obtaining her first master’s degree in international health at Japan’s Tokyo University. A year later, she joined the Ghana Armed Forces Medical Corps and is the Deputy Chief Dietician at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, Ghana. Her first peacekeeping deployment, she joined UNISFA in March 2024 as the Mission’s Military Gender Adviser.

The United Nations Woman Police Officer of the Year award was established in 2011 to recognize the exceptional contributions of women police officers to UN peace operations and to promote women’s empowerment, in line with UN Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security. The UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award is presented annually since 2016 to a military peacekeeper — male or female — who has shown outstanding commitment and leadership in promoting the principles of resolution 1325 (2000). The resolution calls on actors to mainstream a gender perspective in all aspects of peacekeeping and peacebuilding and to ensure women’s participation in peace and political processes. The resolution also calls for the protection from, and prevention of, conflict-related sexual violence and for an expansion of the role and contribution of women in UN operations, including of uniformed women peacekeepers.
The awards ceremony will be held at UN Headquarters on 29 May from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and broadcast live on UN Web TV.

This solemn event will pay tribute to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.
This year’s ceremony holds special significance as it honors Army Pvt. Scott A. Miller, a native of Casper, who was killed in action on June 9, 2007, in Baqubah, Iraq. Pvt. Miller, a 2004 graduate of Natrona County High School, was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) based at Fort Lewis, Washington. Known for his warm smile and mischievous sense of humor, Miller was remembered by his teachers and family as a “burly country boy” with “a heart just as big as Wyoming” .
His parents, Bob and Suzi Miller, will be present at the ceremony as honored guests, representing Gold Star families who have endured the profound loss of a loved one in military service.

Jefferson City — Today, Governor Mike Kehoe announced two appointments to fill two county office vacancies.
Hattie Davis, of Marble Hill, was appointed as the Bollinger County Circuit Clerk.
Ms. Davis currently serves as Acting Bollinger County Circuit Clerk, a position for which she has been serving since March. She brings experience from her previous roles in the Office of State Courts Administration, where she served as Senior Court Clerk, and the Bollinger County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, where she served as an Administrative Assistant. Ms. Davis is active in the Marble Hill Optimist Club and previously supported families through the U.S. Army’s Family Readiness Group.
Rodney McKinney, of Marthasville, was appointed as the Warren County Prosecuting Attorney.
Mr. McKinney currently serves as an attorney at law at his own firm, the Law Office of Rodney McKinney, which he has operated since 2008. He previously served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Franklin County and as an assistant public defender in the City of St. Louis. In addition to his legal duties, Mr. McKinney is a member of the Missouri Bar and the Franklin County Bar Association and volunteered with the Franklin County Treatment Court from 2013-2020. He holds a Juris Doctor from St. Louis University School of Law, where he graduated cum laude and was a member of law review, and a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
NEWARK, N.J. – A Passaic County Correctional Officer admitted his role in assaulting a pretrial detainee and conspiring to obstruct justice, U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced.
Sergeant Donald Vinales, 39, pleaded guilty on May 21, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Michael E. Farbiarz in Newark federal court to a two-count indictment charging him with one count of deprivation of rights under color of law and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice.
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:
On January 22, 2021, a pretrial detainee at the Passaic County Jail (“PCJ”) squirted a mixture containing urine onto a correctional officer. The following day, on January 23, 2021, Sergeant Vinales admitted that he, along with Sergeant Jose Gonzalez, and Correctional Officer Lorenzo Bowden, who were also charged in this case, transported the detainee through an area of the PCJ that does not have a video surveillance camera, which Correctional Officers and inmates at the PCJ have referred to as a “blind spot.” While in that “blind spot,” Sergeant Vinales admitted that he and Sgt. Gonzalez assaulted the detainee, while he was handcuffed, when they knocked him to the ground and struck him multiple times. One day after the assault, the detainee was taken to a local hospital, which documented injuries from the assault.
The defendants were required to submit documentation regarding their use of force. None of them submitted any such reports.
In April 2022, after receiving federal grand jury subpoenas in connection with this investigation, Sergeant Gonzalez, Sergeant Vinales, Officer Bowden, among others, met to discuss the federal investigation. During that meeting, the group agreed not to cooperate with the federal investigation and also agreed to say that nothing had happened to the detainee (referring to the assault). Thereafter, during an interview with federal investigators in October 2022, Bowden falsely stated that the detainee had not been assaulted and that there had not been any meeting or communication among those who participated in or witnessed the assault.
Officer Bowden pleaded guilty on April 18, 2024, before Judge Farbiarz to an information charging him with conspiracy to obstruct justice and is awaiting sentencing.
The charge of deprivation of rights under color of law carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and the charge of conspiracy to obstruct justice carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Both charges carry a fine of up to $250,000. Vinales’s sentencing is scheduled for September 30, 2025.
U.S. Attorney Habba credited special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Terence G. Reilly in Newark; and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office Division of Internal Affairs, under the direction of Sheriff Thomas Adamo.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Levin, Chief of the Narcotics/OCDETF Unit in Newark, and R. Joseph Gribko, Senior Trial Counsel in Trenton.
The charges and allegations contained in the indictment against Sergeant Gonzalez are still pending, are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

NEWARK, N.J. – A Bloomfield resident admitted participating in a conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute opioids, as well as unlawful distribution of opioids, U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced.
Danielle Molinari, 51, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo in Newark federal court to an information charging her with one count of drug conspiracy and one count of distribution of, and possession with intent to distribute, oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled substance.
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:
Between February 2019 and March 2023, Molinari participated in a conspiracy to obtain medically unnecessary prescriptions for oxycodone, an opioid pain medication. Once Molinari obtained the oxycodone through a prescription, she then sold the oxycodone to another individual in exchange for money. Over the course of the conspiracy, Molinari unlawfully distributed approximately 4,665 oxycodone pills.
The two charges of drug conspiracy and distribution of oxycodone each carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, and a fine of $1 million. Sentencing is scheduled for November 4, 2025.
U.S. Attorney Habba credited special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Terence G. Reilly, with the investigation leading to the guilty plea.

“In 1942, 29 members of the Navajo Nation joined the U.S. Marine Corps to pioneer what would become one of the most impactful programs of World War II: the Navajo Code Talkers. These 29 Diné recruits helped change the tide of the war.
“During Iwo Jima, over 800 encrypted messages were sent by six code talkers, without anything written down. Navajo Marines deciphered and coded each line in real time, on the front lines and under fire. By the end of World War II, almost 400 Diné Marines were serving around the world as Code Talkers, in addition to yet other Tribal members, including the Hopi Code Talkers in the U.S. Army.
“From the Long Walk and forced relocations to the tragic legacy of Indian boarding schools, the United States has inflicted horrific harms on the Diné and Hopi people. But when the time came to mobilize against authoritarianism, these brave men stepped forward and helped the world prevail against hate.

For 101 years, members of the United States Border Patrol (USBP) have courageously served as guardians of our sovereignty and protectors of our homeland against invasion, aggression, and violence. Every day, Border Patrol agents selflessly risk their lives to repel the flow of deadly drugs, weapons, criminals, and terrorists — many of whom come to our shores from jails, prisons, and mental institutions in far-flung countries across the globe. On this anniversary of the United States Border Patrol, we honor every agent for their honorable service and pledge to support them in their mission to keep Americans safe.
For decades, the USBP has maintained the thin line between order and chaos. Unfortunately, the last administration — in an extraordinary act of deception and betrayal, imported an army of unvetted illegal aliens, including violent criminals, thugs, gang members, and terrorists from the darkest and most dangerous parts of the world. Their arrival over the last 4 years ushered in record-shattering levels of immigrants illegally coming into our country while at the same time depleting resources and draining the morale of our incredible USBP agents.
The tide turned on January 20, 2025. One of my first actions as President was declaring a National Emergency at the southern border of the United States, which provided additional authority to the Department of Defense to support the Federal Government’s response to the crisis. I also designated cartels and other transnational organizations, such as Tren de Aragua and MS-13, as foreign terrorist organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists in order to end their campaign of violence and bloodshed on our homeland. Additionally, I have resumed our border wall construction, reinstated the Remain in Mexico policy, halted the practice of catch-and-release, ended asylum for illegal border crossers, deployed thousands of American soldiers to defend and protect our borders, and implemented the largest deportation operation in the history of our country.
Within my first 100 days in office, daily border encounters dropped 95 percent, and migrant crossings declined by an astounding 99.99 percent. In March, our Nation saw the lowest monthly number of border encounters in recorded history — and fentanyl traffic fell by 54 percent compared to March of the previous year. Also in my first 100 days, my Administration arrested more than 150,000 and deported more than 135,000 illegal aliens. Under my leadership, our USBP agents are not only receiving the resources they need to do their job but also the respect they have earned and deserve — and our work is only just beginning.
As we celebrate 101 years of the USBP, we honor the thousands of patriots who dedicate their careers to defending our borders and upholding the rule of law, even in the face of grave danger and tremendous risk. Above all, we pay tribute to every brave soul who has perished in the line of duty while proudly serving our Nation. Military drones have become a defining feature of modern warfare, as seen in Ukraine where they have caused more casualties than any other weapon. Their widespread use spans reconnaissance, strikes, logistics and naval operations, with both state and non-state players increasingly relying on unmanned systems. The European Union (EU) has prioritised drone development and countermeasures, funding and coordinating research and capability development through the European Defence Fund and Permanent Structured Cooperation. EU leaders have committed to strengthening the defence industry and made major investments in drone production, innovation, and interoperability. The EU is also fostering synergies between the civilian and the defence sectors, addressing strategic dependencies and collaborating with NATO. Furthermore, the European Defence Agency is advancing unmanned aerial system technology through joint projects and its innovation hub. Meanwhile, drone regulation remains fragmented: civilian drones are subject to comprehensive EU rules, while military drone use falls under international law. Legal concerns persist, especially regarding proportionality, accountability and lethal autonomous weapons (LAWS). The European Parliament has called for transparency, adherence to international law and a ban on LAWS, while supporting defence innovation and proposing an EU drone package to stimulate joint procurement and industry participation, particularly from Ukraine. EU lawmakers continue to stress the need for ethical guardrails, robust export controls and a coherent regulatory framework that balances innovation with international legal obligations. The Parliament also emphasises the importance of meaningful human control over all lethal decisions and insists that military artificial intelligence include strong accountability mechanisms.

The Royal Kingdom of Morocco was recently approved to purchase High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems and related equipment, and the exercise demonstrated air transportation of munitions for the system. U.S. Army Sgt. Jeff Splain, a motor transport operator with the 744th FSC led his soldiers through the training event where the FAR, using their CH-47 Chinook, flew into the training area, retrieved a reduced range practice rocket pod, departed, and then returned the pod to the landing zone.

After the best course of action was determined, the teams took their respective places on the landing zone, completing two successful hookups.
“This sling load exercise was a great success. It was a culminating event following months of training on both sides,” said Splain. “I’m very proud of my team and what they’ve done, and the knowledge they’ve shared with our Moroccan partners. There’s been no other training I’ve done so far that’s comparable to this.”

AGADIR, Morocco–The 21st edition of African Lion concluded this week with over 10,000 multinational troops from more than 50 nations executing synchronized operations across four countries, marking the largest and most dynamic iteration in the exercise’s over-25-year history.
This year’s exercise featured first-time integration of defensive cyber operations and expanded chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear (CBRN) scenarios, along with rigorous multinational academic instruction. African Lion 25 validated the United States’ commitment to building enduring partnerships, enhancing joint and combined force readiness and strengthening regional security. The exercise included HIMARS fire missions, airborne operations, amphibious landings, maritime interdiction, and planning exercises with partners from Africa, Europe, and the U.S.
Setting the Theater, Building Trust
“African Lion 25 was a clear demonstration that a combined approach of joint and multinational capabilities enhanced the readiness and lethality of our warfighters,” said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Andrew C. Gainey, commanding general, U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF).
“The integration of cutting-edge technologies alongside our partners and allies reinforced our commitment to remain ready to address the most complex strategic challenges.”
Medical Reach with Tactical Impact
Medical professionals treated more than 10,000 patients across Morocco, Ghana and Senegal as part of AL25’s humanitarian civic assistance (HCA) programs.
“This has been one of the most diverse and capable teams we’ve brought to African Lion,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Micah Smith, commander of 151st Medical Group, Utah Air National Guard and HCA commander. “With members from 37 different units and expertise spanning cardiology, dermatology, pulmonology and more, we’ve been able to provide care many here wouldn’t otherwise receive.”
“Working alongside about 180 Moroccan partners, we’ve operated 17 clinics and treated roughly 1,000 patients a day,” added Smith. “The Moroccan people have been incredibly gracious; it’s been an honor to be here with them.”
Logistics at Scale
Logistics efforts moved several thousand short tons of cargo across borders, validating the U.S. military’s ability to set the theater, sustain distributed operations, and integrate movement control teams across multiple entry points.
“The African Lion Exercise gives us the opportunity to put into practice the planning we have completed to set the theater for sustainment operations.” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Tim Dowd, lead AL25 sustainment planner for the 79th Theater Sustainment Command.
“The complexity of moving several thousand short tons of cargo to four different countries spanning the distance of the continental United States, demonstrates that we can build, sustain, and adapt our logistical networks in support of any mission, anywhere in Africa.”
Regional Training, Local Impact
In Morocco, U.S. and partner forces conducted the largest array of academic instruction, including joint planning, cyber defense, and public affairs courses. CBRN response and HIMARS missions were integrated alongside a multinational planning exercise and humanitarian civic assistance missions in rural communities.

Innovation and Burden-Sharing in Tunisia
In Tunisia, several notable firsts marked AL25’s evolution: for the first time, cyber offense training expanded beyond the usual defensive focus, enabling red-team experimentation. The 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment employed the Avenger Weapon System, demonstrating mobile short-range air defense with Stinger missiles.

Partnering for Readiness in Ghana
In Ghana, U.S. and partner forces conducted a multinational medical readiness exercise (MEDREX), a medical civic action program (MEDCAP) and a planning exercise (PLANEX). These engagements strengthened regional health resilience and interoperability among African and U.S. planners.

Fighting Fit in Senegal’s Extreme Conditions
In Senegal, U.S. Soldiers trained in extreme heat exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, conducting HIMARS fire coordination, airborne operations, and civil-military engagements.
These conditions showcased the Army’s readiness to operate in austere and climate-challenged environments while validating rapid deployment and sustainment capacity.

“Our primary objectives here in Senegal for African Lion are threefold,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Daniel Cederman, SETAF-AF deputy commanding general for the Army Reserve. “First, to achieve lethality and readiness for all participating forces—including the United States, Senegal, the Netherlands, Mauritania and Côte d’Ivoire. IAM Local 1202 and IAM District 8 delivered toys to deserving children around Aurora, Ill through the Aurora Fire Department as part of its annual toy drive.
The IAM Midwest Territory continues to demonstrate its commitment to community service through its “IAM H.E.L.P.S. in the Community” program. This initiative, which stands for Honoring, Engaging, Lifting, Providing, and Servicing, reflects the union’s mission to make a positive impact beyond the workplace.
For IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli, service is more than just an obligation it’s a core value of the labor movement. A 37-year IAM member, Cicinelli has long believed that unions should not only advocate for workers’ rights but also strengthen the communities where members live and work. Since stepping into his leadership role, he has championed IAM H.E.L.P.S. as a vehicle to spread the values of compassion, advocacy, and mutual support.
“Service is the heart of solidarity,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “Through IAM H.E.L.P.S., we lift each other up, strengthen communities, and prove that the labor movement is about more than just work, it’s about making a meaningful difference.”
Each year, every Midwest Territory District and unaffiliated Local sponsors a H.E.L.P.S. event to support local community or others that are in need. By organizing events and volunteer efforts, IAM members strengthen communities, support those in need, and uphold the values of solidarity and service to the community. The events also foster solidarity among members and reinforce their union values.
“Many of us take a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, or a simple winter coat for granted,” said Kristy Kerr, Vice President for District 6 and Local 254’s Recording Secretary. “But for those struggling, these acts of kindness can be life changing. It’s not just about giving back it’s about creating continuing change.”
Meals for Children in Need
FIAM District 5, and members from Locals 2525, W33, and W384, performed their yearly IAM H.E.L.P.S event at the Great Plains Food Bank.
In December 2024, IAM Midwest Territory staff participated in their annual charity event at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) in Schaumburg, Ill. Volunteers packed 143 boxes of scientifically formulated meals designed to combat child malnutrition.
These meals will sustain 85 children with daily nourishment for an entire year, ensuring they have the necessary nutrition to grow and thrive. The IAM’s continued partnership with FMSC highlights the union’s dedication to humanitarian efforts beyond national borders.
“FMSC Coordinators said we were not only the largest group to volunteer, but also the most productive, having packed more meals than any other group,” said Dan Michalski, a Local 701 Member and ASE Master Certified Journeyman Technician. “Many members brought their families with them to help and experience the effort giving it a real family atmosphere. The H.E.L.P.S. projects not only brings union members together, it brings families together to participate to do something for a greater cause.”
Getting Community Members Back on Their Feet
In November 2024, members of IAM Local 1010 and IAM District 6 came together for a service event at Hope Haven, a nonprofit organization in Iowa that provides vocational, residential, and community living services to needy individuals. IAM members dedicated their time and effort to improving the organization’s grounds, creating a more welcoming and comfortable environment for its residents and participants. Their work included landscaping, cleaning, and general maintenance to ensure that the space remains a supportive haven for those who rely on its services.
Keeping Our Commitment to Those Who Served
In September and October 2024, IAM Local 254 and IAM District 6 focused on supporting homeless veterans in the Des Moines area. Recognizing the pressing need for resources as colder months approached, IAM members coordinated an initiative to collect winter clothing, hygiene essentials, and other necessities packed into backpacks.
This project provided much-needed relief for veterans who have served their country but are now facing difficult circumstances. Through these efforts, IAM members demonstrated their unwavering support for those who have sacrificed so much, reinforcing the union’s dedication to service and advocacy.
“We have a real homeless problem, especially amongst veterans who have given so much for our country. It’s our duty to step up and support them in their time of need,” said Kristy Kerr, Vice President for District 6 and Local 254’s Recording Secretary. “Getting volunteers isn’t easy, but if you can get the buy-in from your members, even if it’s just once, that usually starts to snowball amongst others, and they bring in more volunteers. We’re not just giving back, we’re creating lasting change.”
Every Child Deserves a Safe, Secure Night’s Rest

In June 2024, members of IAM Locals 41, 313, and 660 from District 9 collaborated with Sleep in Heavenly Peace in Alton, Ill., to build beds for local children in need. This initiative, part of the IAM Midwest Territory’s H.E.L.P.S. program, reflects the union’s commitment to community service and ensuring that no child sleeps on the floor.
“It brings a lot of locals together throughout the District,” said Local 313 Vice President and District 9 Delegate Garrett Gerdes. “When union members come together for a cause bigger than themselves, the impact is extraordinary. Whether it’s feeding children, supporting veterans, or providing essentials for families, our efforts show that the IAM is always ready to lend a helping hand.”
Clothing Donations Help Local Children
The Midwest Territory’s commitment to community service extends even further, as seen in past initiatives such as IAM District 8 members from Locals 126, 1000, 2068, 49 and 48 came together in mid-December to make a difference in the community by volunteering at Cradles to Crayons in Chicago, a nonprofit dedicated to providing essential items to children who face clothing insecurity. During their volunteer efforts, IAM members played a vital role in sorting donations and preparing approximately 640 quality clothing items for distribution to local children. This effort aims to help many families that struggle to provide essential clothing, directly impacting the lives of at-risk children. It ensures children have access to the basic items necessary for confidence, safety, and success.
Giving Back to Our Military Veterans
IAM Local 254 and IAM District 6 organized an event under the IAM Midwest Territory H.E.L.P.S. initiative to support homeless veterans in the Des Moines area.
IAM District 77 has also been a leading example of volunteerism within the program, and their consistent dedication to IAM H.E.L.P.S. events. IAM District 77 members recently volunteered their time to support the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV), an organization that works to provide housing services to veterans and former service members who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
During the holiday season, IAM Midwest Territory staff brought warmth and cheer to the homeless by organizing meal services and distributing essential items. These efforts provided comfort and sustenance to individuals facing hardship, highlighting the union’s commitment to serving the most vulnerable members of society.
Chicago based IAM Mechanics Local 701 members also contributed to the community by participating in various service projects, including supporting local shelters and food banks. Their involvement has made a tangible difference in the lives of many residents, demonstrating the far-reaching impact of the IAM H.E.L.P.S. program.
Through each of these events, IAM Midwest Territory and its members reaffirm their commitment to making a difference. The IAM H.E.L.P.S. in the Community program is about fostering a culture of service and advocacy that strengthens neighborhoods, supports the most vulnerable, and upholds the core values of the labor movement. As IAM members continue to step up and give back, they embody the true spirit of unity and compassion, proving that the labor movement extends far beyond the workplace and into the heart of the community.
Every year, the recipients of the IAM Midwest Territory Helping Hands Awards, affectionately known as the “IAM Helpy’s” honor IAM Districts and unaffiliated Locals that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their communities through the “IAM H.E.L.P.S. in the Community” program.
New Year, New Initiative Added
For 2025, Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli has announced a new initiative geared towards the IAM’s favorite charity, Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines. The new initiative, known as the Top Dog Award, will feature a “traveling” doghouse-shaped plaque. The annual winner will have bragging rights for the year being the top revenue generator and get to display the traveling trophy in their District or Local for the year.
The idea behind the plan is to foster friendly competition amongst the states of the Midwest Territory, making the fundraising effort more of a good-natured and competitive series of events that also fosters team building while increasing fundraising across the territory.
Carolyn Clark puts a finishing touch on the new Top Dog Award. The plaque was handcrafted by the Winpisinger Center’s own John Wible.
“These programs aren’t just about volunteerism,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “It’s about building stronger communities and reinforcing the values of service, solidarity, and compassion that define our union. Every event, every hour volunteered, and every donation makes a difference in someone’s life, and that’s what being part of the IAM is all about.”
Through the IAM H.E.L.P.S. in the Community program, IAM Midwest Territory members are proving that unions are about more than just workplace rights they are about uplifting people in every aspect of life. The program serves as a model for how organized labor can build stronger, more compassionate communities.
The success of IAM H.E.L.P.S. should inspire IAM members everywhere to look beyond the workplace and find ways to make a difference in their communities. Every act of service strengthens the bond between the IAM and the people it serves, proving that the labor movement is, and always will be, about lifting people up together.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, Senator Thom Tillis introduced legislation to authorize the Secretary of Agriculture to relocate a memorial honoring the nine Air Force crew members who lost their lives in an airplane crash in the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests during a training mission on August 31, 1982.
“The nine Air Force crew members who perished in the 1982 C-141 crash made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation,” said Senator Tillis. “Their bravery deserves to be honored at a location that truly reflects the gravity of their loss and provides a meaningful place for reflection for visitors and their families. This legislation is a crucial step in ensuring these heroes are properly remembered in perpetuity at the actual crash site.”
Representative Chuck Edwards (R-NC) introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.
“Western North Carolina will never forget the tragedy that occurred in 1982, when nine Air Force crew members lost their lives in our district,” said Rep. Edwards. “The families and supporters of these servicemembers have requested that the memorial be moved to a more prominent location, closer to the site and available for the public to visit. This bill will give the families the authority they need to move the memorial, keeping the memories of our nation’s fallen soldiers alive for years to come.”
Background:
On August 31, 1982, a C-141 left Charleston AFB on a training mission and crashed in the mountains of North Carolina, killing all nine crew members. To honor these heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, a group consisting of their families and airmen from a sister squadron placed a small granite marker on private land within the Nantahala National Forest along the Cherohala Skyway.
The current location of the memorial is several miles away from the actual crash site. As the sister squadron veterans are getting older, they want to ensure the memorial stands in perpetuity and that their story is shared with the many visitors to the area.

During the unscripted portions, Trump, who wore a bright red “Make America Great Again” campaign hat during his entire appearance on May 24, 2025, delivered remarks that hit many of his frequent partisan political talking points. That included attacking presidential predecessors Barack Obama and Joe Biden, describing immigrants to the U.S. as “criminals” and trumpeting other policy accomplishments in his first and second terms.
That level of partisanship in a military setting – on the campus of the nation’s first military academy, and before an audience of cadets and their families, many of whom are veterans – is unusual in the United States.
The Conversation U.S. has published several articles discussing the importance to democracy of keeping the military and partisan politics separate. Here are three highlights from that coverage.
1. Cadets focus on the Constitution
During the West Point ceremony, the graduates themselves took an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” And all of them had studied the significance of that oath, including in classes like those taught by Joseph G. Amoroso and Lee Robinson, active-duty Army officers who graduated from West Point and later served as professors there.
As Amoroso and Robinson wrote, those classes teach cadets that, like all military personnel, they serve the Constitution and the American people, not a particular person or political party:
“(O)ur oath forms the basis of a nonpartisan ethic. In the U.S., unlike in many other countries, the oath implies military leaders should be trusted for their expertise and judgment, not for their loyalty to an individual or political party. We emphasize to cadets the rules and professional expectations associated with this profound responsibility.”
Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Samuel C. Mahaney, who teaches history, national security and constitutional law at Missouri University of Science and Technology, observed:
“(S)ince the days of George Washington, the military has been dedicated to serving the nation, not a specific person or political agenda. … (N)onpartisanship is central to the military’s primary mission of defending the country.”
Mahaney wrote that if Trump’s actions during his second term meant a change from the centuries of precedent, “military personnel at all levels would face a crucial question: Would they stand up for the military’s independent role in maintaining the integrity and stability of American democracy or follow the president’s orders – even if those orders crossed a line that made them illegal or unconstitutional?”
Marcus Hedahl and Bradley Jay Strawser, professors of philosophy who teach military ethics at the U.S. Naval Academy and the Naval Postgraduate School, respectively, explain the reason for this long-standing focus on keeping politicians and politics separate from military action.
“To minimize the chance of the kind of military occupation they suffered during the Revolutionary War, the country’s founders wrote the Constitution requiring that the president, an elected civilian, would be the commander in chief of the military. In the wake of World War II, Congress went even further, restructuring the military and requiring that the secretary of defense be a civilian as well.”
As they observed, “… the framers always intended it to be the people’s military – not the president’s.”
The recent attack in Pahalgam and military exchanges between India and Pakistan have renewed international focus on a nearly 80-years-long conflict over Kashmir.
But a preliminary review of both North American and Indian media reveals only surface-level analyses.
Missing from the coverage — and much academic analysis — is the story of Kashmiris as Indigenous Peoples. Their divided territory has been under multiple occupations since 1947, with other colonial rulers prior to that. International human rights groups have raised alarms about Kashmiris facing intensive repression by the Indian and Pakistani governments.
Patterns of colonial nation-building and settlement have produced orders and borders that have been controlling Kashmir since the 1947 British partition of India and Pakistan. The repressive Indian and Pakistani settler-colonial laws operate through interconnected legal, cultural and military mechanisms.
These methods eliminate Kashmiri self-determination, land rights and self-government.
Applying an Indigenous rights framework to Kashmir
Its diverse, multi-faith communities include a Muslim majority and Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Christian minorities. An Indigenous rights framework recognizes Kashmiris as the first peoples of the land with cultural rights, inherent sovereignty, economic rights and collective rights to ancestral lands.
I have observed Indians and Pakistanis claiming Kashmiri identity through religious affiliation. This self-indigenizing erases actual Kashmiris by conflating religious and Indigenous identities.
According to the United Nations: “Indigenous refers to peoples of long settlement and connection to specific lands who have been adversely affected by incursions by industrial economies, displacement and settlement of their traditional territories by others.” In my peer-reviewed work, I have argued this definition applies to Kashmiri people.
Cultural criminalization of Kashmiri population
In popular and political ongoing anti-Kashmiri racist narratives, Kashmiris are cast as perpetual “security threats” and “terrorists.”
Suppression of dissent and restrictions on freedom of information and expression prevent Kashmiris from voicing grievances to advance collective rights.
The Domicile Act is a typical colonial strategy and works to undermine Indigenous presence and resistance capacity.
Pakistan side of the border
On the Pakistani side, the Interim Constitution for Kashmir forbids political expression that challengs Pakistan’s control of and claim to Kashmir.
This constitution also established a governance system that initially included the Kashmir Council, with Pakistani officials holding significant power over legislation and appointments.
Following the 2018 13th amendment, many legislative powers transferred from the Kashmir Council to the Pakistani government rather than to the Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) Assembly. This means Pakistan retains exclusive control over many areas.
Extractive settler-colonial government economies dispossess Kashmiris from their land through control of water, energy projects, lithium mining and deforestation.
A sustainable peace requires undoing settler-colonial borders and orders across Kashmir. It requires reuniting Kashmiris across the colonial divide. Colonizers need to surrender governance power back to Indigenous Kashmiris.
Kashmiri self-government — without colonial oversight — would respect Kashmiri freedoms, sovereignty and self-determination over ancestral lands, waterways and resources. This would bring peace to the region.

India attracted a record USD 81.04 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the fiscal year 2024–25, up 14% from the previous year, driven by a liberalized policy regime and strong inflows into the services and manufacturing sectors, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry said on Tuesday.
The services sector emerged as the top recipient of FDI equity in FY 2024–25, attracting 19% of total inflows, followed by computer software and hardware (16%) and trading (8%). FDI into the services sector rose by 40.77%, reaching USD 9.35 billion, up from USD 6.64 billion in the previous year.
India is also becoming a hub for manufacturing FDI, which grew by 18% in FY 2024–25, reaching USD 19.04 billion compared to USD 16.12 billion in FY 2023–24.

TRENTON, N.J. – An El Salvador national was arrested and charged with possessing firearms as an illegal alien, U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced.
Jose Manuel Menjivar Viera, a/k/a Jose Manuel Mejiva, 35, a citizen and national of El Salvador and most recently of Long Branch, New Jersey, was charged by complaint with one count of being an illegal alien in possession of firearms. Viera made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Brendan Day in Trenton federal court and was detained.
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:
On December 11, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., law enforcement officers in Long Branch responded to multiple calls for service regarding gunshots fired in a suburban neighborhood. Shortly after officers arrived, they observed an individual, later identified as Jose Manuel Menjivar Viera, riding a bicycle and carrying a large black bag. Officers followed Viera before he dismounted from the bike and fled into the exterior property of a nearby residence. Officers searched the area where Viera fled and eventually recovered his bicycle and the bag he was carrying. The bag contained two firearms, a semiautomatic rifle and a loaded handgun, firearm magazines, ammunition, and a machete. A short time later, officers discovered Viera hiding in the truck-bed of a pickup truck parked in the driveway next to the residence. Viera was subsequently identified by agents with the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as being an El Salvador national and citizen and without any legal status to be in the United States.
The alien in possession of a firearm charge carries a maximum potential penalty of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
U.S. Attorney Habba credited deportation officers of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations Newark, under the direction of Field Office Director John Tsoukaris, with the investigation leading to the charges. She also thanked the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Terence G. Reilly in Newark, the Long Branch Police Department, under the direction of Officer-in-Charge Jorge Silverio, and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago, for their assistance in the investigation.

In his famed 1953 “Atoms for Peace” speech, President Eisenhower proclaimed that “the United States knows that peaceful power from atomic energy is no dream of the future.” That dream was soon realized, as America built more than one hundred reactors over the next twenty-five years. But today, the promise of nuclear energy and innovation does indeed seem like a dream of the future.
Through a series of executive orders signed this week, President Trump is taking action to usher in an American nuclear renaissance. For the first time in many years, America has a path forward for quickly and safely testing advanced nuclear reactor designs, constructing new nuclear reactors at scale, and building a strong domestic nuclear industrial base.
Our stagnation was not for a lack of ingenuity or desire to innovate among America’s great scientists and technologists. By the end of the 1970s, dozens of nuclear reactors were planned or under construction. In the past 30 years, however, only three commercial nuclear reactors have been built, and many more have been shuttered. We know America can accomplish great feats in nuclear energy, so what happened?
In the wake of the Three Mile Island accident in 1979, public opinion began to sour on nuclear energy, and the effects of a decade of new federal bureaucracies began to set in. Overly burdensome regulations stifled our ability to even test, let alone deploy, new nuclear technologies. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) set the gold standard for safety regulation when it was established in 1975, but it soon transformed into a lead curtain for innovation. Onerous environmental requirements and long, uncertain regulatory timelines have killed industry’s willingness to fund new technologies.
Similarly, the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Labs—which once led the world in the development and demonstration of advanced nuclear technologies—shuttered nuclear development programs, shifting focus to other priorities. All but three of fifty-two reactors at Idaho National Laboratory have been decommissioned, and it has been almost half a century since the Army Nuclear Power Program was shut down. These decisions eroded our domestic nuclear supply chain, undermined our national security, and left us having to relearn what we once pioneered.
President Trump wisely recognizes that the time is ripe for an American nuclear renaissance and is acting to deliver on the promise of nuclear energy for the American people. Across the country, American entrepreneurs and engineers are launching a new generation of nuclear companies featuring innovative reactor designs and scalable manufacturing techniques that can make nuclear safe, efficient, and economic. The Trump Administration will clear their path by dismantling outdated barriers that previous administrations had put up in their way.
Today, nuclear power plants provide approximately 19% of the electricity generated in the United States, more than solar and wind combined. That is reliable and affordable electricity for the American people, and it could and should be even more. The Trump Administration is setting the goal of expanding American nuclear energy capacity from 100 GW today to 400 GW by 2050. This week’s executive actions will help us reach that goal in four ways.
First, we are going to fully leverage our DOE national laboratories to increase the speed with which we test new nuclear reactor designs. There is a big difference between a paper reactor and a practical reactor. The only way to bridge that gap—understanding the challenges that must be surmounted to bring reactors to the market, and building public trust in their deployment—is to test and evaluate demonstration reactors.
Second, for our national and economic security, we are going to leverage the Departments of Defense and Energy to build nuclear reactors on federally owned land. This will support critical national security needs which require reliable, high-density power sources that are invulnerable to external threats or grid failures.
Third, to lower regulatory burdens and shorten licensing timelines, we are asking the NRC to undergo broad cultural change and regulatory reform, requiring a decision on a reactor license to be issued within 18 months. This will reduce regulatory uncertainty while maintaining nuclear safety. We will also reconsider the use of radiation limits that are not science based, impossible to achieve, and do not increase the safety of the American people.
Fourth, we will be supporting our domestic nuclear industrial base across the nuclear fuel cycle. The President has called for industry to start mining and enriching uranium in America again, as well as an expansion of domestic uranium conversion capacity as well as enrichment capabilities to meet projected civilian and defense reactor needs.
When President Eisenhower spoke about nuclear potential over 70 years ago, he expressed no doubt that the world’s best scientists and engineers, if empowered to “test and develop their ideas,” could turn nuclear energy into a “universal, efficient, and economic” source of power. In 2025, we have only to believe in American technologists, and give them the chance to build, to turn nuclear power into energy dominance and national security for all.

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Combat Veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL)—a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC)—today pressed Air Force Secretary Troy Meink and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin on the more than $1 billion in taxpayer money it would cost to convert the Qatari jet into a secure Air Force One, as well as the operational security risks inherent with using a jet gifted by a foreign government to transport the President. “It’s not enough that Donald Trump has given the pathetic appearance that he can be bought with a luxury jet—this flying national security risk will also force taxpayers to waste over $1 billion in upgrades to make the aircraft fit to protect a President of the United States,” Duckworth said. “We already have two fully operational and capable Air Force One aircraft. This would be a colossal, unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars that needlessly creates operational security risks and gives the dangerous impression that our foreign policy is for sale. We cannot allow this.”
Duckworth has been an outspoken critic of the Trump Administration’s plan to accept the $400 million luxury jet from Qatar. Last Thursday, she led her Senate Democratic colleagues in demanding that the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) be transparent with them about the substantial national security and operational risks posed by President Trump’s plan to accept the $400 million jet from the Qatari royal family. Last Friday, the Senator joined U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) and other colleagues in urging the DOD Acting Inspector General to open an inquiry into DOD’s involvement facilitating the transfer of an unprecedented foreign gift intended for President Trump’s personal use.
Since day one, Duckworth has repeatedly called out the Trump Administration’s top-ranking national security officials and the severe national security failures they have been responsible for. After The Atlantic reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sent classified war plans in a Signal group chat with other Trump Administration officials, putting the lives of our men and women in uniform at greater risk and undermining the effectiveness of the mission, Duckworth released a statement demanding Hegseth’s resignation and an independent investigation into all officials on the Signal chain. The Senator reiterated her call for Hegseth to resign in disgrace after the New York Times reported that Hegseth also shared the classified airstrike plans with his wife and brother. In March, Duckworth joined her Senate colleagues in calling on the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, SASC and U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee to hold hearings to investigate why members of President Trump’s national security team were recklessly discussing classified military operations on unsecured devices.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.) and David McCormick (R-Pa.) last week introduced the Defending International Security by Restricting Unlawful Partnerships and Tactics (DISRUPT) Act of 2025, a bipartisan bill to address the increased cooperation between U.S. adversaries that threatens our nation’s interests.
Authoritarian regimes in China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea have deepened their cooperation in recent years, including an increased transfer of weapons and munitions, sharing military technologies, launching disinformation campaigns, and coordinating joint operations that threaten the stability of the international order. Despite this looming threat, the U.S. lacks a strategic response to our adversaries increasing alignment.
“Our adversaries are becoming friends,” said Senator Coons. “We cannot continue to sit back and watch as they gain strength before our eyes – in weapons, in their armies, in their economic power. They want to make our country less secure and our economy less prosperous. The DISRUPT Act is the first step to stopping their progress and keeping Americans safe.”

Require the development of a whole-of-government strategy to approach this phenomenon
Create interagency task forces within key departments such as State, Defense, Commerce, Treasury, and the Directors of National Intelligence and of the Central Intelligence Agency to ensure a coordinated, long-term response
The DISRUPT Act highlights the need for the U.S. to disrupt the most dangerous aspects of this adversarial cooperation, reduce its expanding footprint, and prepare for the growing likelihood of simultaneous challenges across multiple regions. The bill also reinforces America’s commitment to strategic leadership, strengthening alliances, and creating a long-term strategy to preserve our national interests.

St. Petersburg, May 27 (Xinhua) — Russia’s Baltic Fleet on Tuesday began scheduled exercises to maintain combat readiness and practice defensive actions of the navy in the Baltic Sea, the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry reported.
The exercise involves about 3,000 servicemen, more than 20 warships, boats and support vessels, including a frigate, corvettes, small missile ships and boats, small anti-submarine ships, minesweepers and support vessels. Also involved are about 25 aircraft and helicopters, up to 70 units of military and special equipment.
The exercises include anti-submarine missions and protection against unmanned boats, as well as practical artillery fire at sea and air targets. –0–
Tampa, Florida – United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announces the return of an indictment charging Trang Johnny Nha Phan (25, Minnesota) with attempted arson of federal property, possessing a Molotov cocktail as a convicted felon, and using a Molotov cocktail in furtherance of a crime of violence. If convicted on all counts, Phan faces a minimum penalty of 35 years, up to 65, in federal prison. The indictment also notifies Phan that the United States intends to forfeit assets that are alleged to be traceable to proceeds of the offense.
According to the indictment, on February 14, 2025, Phan attempted to set fire using a Molotov cocktail to a M-60 A-3 tank owned by the U.S. Army. At the time, Phan had been convicted for threats of violence and possessing three grams or more of heroin.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Sarasota Police Department, and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Adam W. McCall.
