    SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF ELIMINATION ROUNDS

    The Indian Navy Quiz – THINQ24, progressed with the first Elimination Round on 10 Sep 24. A total of 12,655 school teams registered for the National level quiz competition were put through three elimination rounds which culminated on 25 Sep 24.

    The shortlisted schools will now participate in the Zonals on 14-15 Oct 24, which will be conducted in online mode.

    THINQ 24 which commenced it’s journey with registration process on15 Jul 24 has reached the half way mark with the completion of Elimination rounds. This year, the theme of THINQ 2024 is ‘Viksit Bharat’ aligned with the vision to transform India into a developed nation by 2047. This quiz competition goes beyond the concept of testing just the general awareness of students. It is a forum to ignite young minds, spread awareness among students on their role in nation building and reach greater heights

    The semifinals and final of THINQ 24 would be held at the premier Naval Training establishment, the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala under the aegis of Southern Naval Command on 07 & 08 Nov 24.

    Despite its dramatic nature, the situation of our compatriots, military and civilians present on Lebanese territory does not show profiles different from those of the past few days. Italy confirms, in line with the position held so far, the need for every diplomatic effort in order to restart channels of dialogue between the parties in conflict.

    During World War II, a small operational detachment from the Office of Strategic Services parachuted behind enemy lines into the German-controlled French Alps to arm, train, and organize the French resistance fighters on August 1, 1944.

    #Marine Maj. Peter Ortiz led the OSS team of five other Marines, an Army Air Corps Captain, and a French resistance fighter wearing a Marine Corps uniform.

    The operation ultimately led to them being surrounded by German forces in the town of Centron, where the team willingly surrendered to save the local civilian population. Eighty years later, their actions are remembered by U.S. and French service members and civilians.

    Hassan Nasrallah and the terrorist group he led, Hezbollah, were responsible for killing hundreds of Americans over a four-decade reign of terror.  His death from an Israeli airstrike is a measure of justice for his many victims, including thousands of Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians.

    The strike that killed Nasrallah took place in the broader context of the conflict that began with Hamas’s massacre on October 7, 2023.  Nasrallah, the next day, made the fateful decision to join hands with Hamas and open what he called a “northern front” against Israel.

    The United States fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and any other Iranian-supported terrorist groups.  Just yesterday, I directed my Secretary of Defense to further enhance the defense posture of U.S. military forces in the Middle East region to deter aggression and reduce the risk of a broader regional war.

    Ultimately, our aim is to de-escalate the ongoing conflicts in both Gaza and Lebanon through diplomatic means.  In Gaza, we have been pursuing a deal backed by the UN Security Council for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.  In Lebanon, we have been negotiating a deal that would return people safely to their homes in Israel and southern Lebanon.  It is time for these deals to close, for the threats to Israel to be removed, and for the broader Middle East region to gain greater stability.

  • MIL-OSI Security: PACAF Band Revisits Sendai

    The U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific-Asia traveled to the Sendai region of Japan on a mission to honor the victims and survivors of the earthquake and tsunami disaster that occurred on March 11, 2011, bringing with them the same spirit of hope and solidarity that first united them with the community 13 years ago.

    The band, along with The Greatlanders Jazz Band from Elmendorf Air Base in Alaska, visited the area to bring hope and unity through music as part of Operation Tomodachi, the Japanese word for “friendship”. Operation Tomodachi occurred between 12 March to 4 May, 2011, as a disaster relief imitative following the 9.0 Tokohu earthquake and subsequent tsumani that struck the eastern coast of Japan. The effort involved more than 24,000 U.S. military service members from all branches of service. The U.S. Air Force Bands played a significant role in boosting morale during and after this initiative by offering concerts for those affected and brought a ray of hope amidst a historical disaster.

    The band performed in Kabanomachi Elementary School in August, 2011, where the gymnasium had been converted into a shelter for families displaced by the disaster. Thirteen years later and the band retraced their steps in the Sendai region, returning to Kabannomachi Elementary to play once more, their hearts filled with memories of resilience, loss, and the unbreakable bond formed with local residents during those critical days.

    Masato Yagi, U.S. Band of the Pacific-Asia community relations specialist for the past 25 years, coordinated the band’s presence at both the initial performance in 2011 and the most recent concert in 2024.

    “Many people flocked to the Sendai area to provide disaster relief immediately following the tsunami, and the Band of the Pacific-Asia wanted to help in our own way by bringing music to cheer up dislocated people,” Yagi said. “This most recent performance was special because it was the first time we have returned since that initial concert. We want to let the people here know that we still care.”  

    This visit was more than just a performance—it was a heartfelt tribute to the people who had lost so much, and a reminder that they were never forgotten. As they played, familiar notes filled the gymnasium once again, the music was a reminder not just of a tragedy, but of the enduring friendship between the U.S. and Japan. The band’s return was an affirmation that the compassion and solidarity shown in the immediate aftermath of the disaster had not faded with time.

    Operation Tomodachi was always about more than providing aid to mission partners and to neighbors; it was evidence of the continual effort to build a bridge between two nations, and performances such as these reinforce that lasting connection. The band’s performance serves as to remind people that in the face of unimaginable tragedy, friendship and support can endure, transcending time, distance, and culture. This spirit of remembrance and hope continues to resonate throughout the connection between the U.S. and Japan, growing with each effort.

  • MIL-OSI USA: DOD Awards $61 Million Contract for Construction of Aircraft Maintenance Facility at Grand Forks Air Force Base

    BISMARCK, N.D. – The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) announced it awarded a $61,492,477 contract to Korte Construction Company for the construction and renovation of a building for use as an Aircraft Maintenance Facility to accommodate the Disaster Resiliency Program mission. The work is expected to be completed on October 8, 2026, and will be performed at Grand Forks Air Force Base (GFAFB).

    “While it may have seemed unlikely in 2010, operations at Grand Forks Air Force Base continue to grow, and improvements and growth go hand in hand,” said U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC). “This contract is a welcome development to renovate the Aircraft Maintenance Facility and ensure our airmen have a modern building to meet the needs of today’s threats.”

    Cramer has used his seat on SASC to support military installations and defense ecosystem partnerships in North Dakota. In August, Cramer flipped the switch to bring the Space Development Agency (SDA) Operations Center North online at GFAFB, participated in a Grand Forks Base Retention Committee meeting, toured the University of North Dakota (UND) National Security Corridor, and announced new Navy personnel at GFAFB. Cramer also joined E-Space CEO Greg Wyler in meeting with UND faculty and SDA staff to discuss workforce development and initiatives, and announced educational initiatives between SDA and UND.

  • MIL-OSI Security: MSST Honolulu enhances security operations in support of Forces Micronesia Sector Guam’s PWCS surge operations

    Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) Honolulu completed quarterly surge operations in support of the U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam’s Ports, Waterways, and Coastal Security (PWCS) mission in Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands from Aug. 31 – Sept. 18, 2024.

    During this period, MSST Honolulu, augmented by MSST San Francisco, provided a law enforcement capable tactical crew to bolster regional security efforts.

    “We proudly support Sector Guam’s PWCS mission and strengthen our partnerships with local agencies. Through our joint operations, we are enhancing maritime security and ensuring the safety of our regional waters. Our crews love their time out here. Collaboration is key to our success, and we remain dedicated to serving the Marianas communities,” said Lt. j.g. Emily Titus, team lead of MSST Honolulu.

    Key highlights from the operation include:
    • Joint Law Enforcement Missions: MSST Honolulu participated in multiple interagency law enforcement missions, including a joint shoreside patrol with Guam’s Department of Agriculture and NOAA Enforcement Division. Crews conducted over 13 hours of collaborative patrols, significantly enhancing interagency relationships.

    • Surge Operations in Saipan: MSST personnel conducted surge LE operations in Saipan, completing 22 recreational boardings and engaging in four hours of joint patrols with Saipan’s Department of Public Safety.

    • Operational Achievements: Completed 17 hours of joint interagency patrols.

    • Interoperability Discussions: MSST Honolulu met with the Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam’s Enforcement Division and Guam’s Department of Agriculture to discuss interoperability and develop an operational plan for a 2025 deployment focused on marine protected species.

    “The presence of MSST Honolulu as a force multiplier is invaluable. Their specialized capabilities enhance the Coast Guard’s ability to respond effectively to emerging threats and support interagency operations. By working alongside local partners, we increase our operational capacity and build stronger relationships that are essential for ensuring the safety and security of our maritime environment throughout the Marianas,” said Lt. Chelsea Garcia, the U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam, Enforcement Division chief.

    Additionally, MSST Honolulu’s commitment to regional security was underscored by their involvement in Operation Irensia in June, where the team provided mission law enforcement support and training for visiting crews. During their June 2023 deployment to Guam, MSST Honolulu played a vital role in recovery efforts following Typhoon Mawar, collaborating with U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy EOD Mobile Unit Five divers and Station Apra Harbor to remove obstructed buoys and conducting side scan sonar operations to reopen the port after a three-day closure. They also facilitated the first escort of essential supplies to the island once the port was operational again.

    The ongoing collaboration and operational excellence demonstrated by MSST Honolulu and MSST San Francisco crews further solidifies the Coast Guard’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Guam’s waters and the surrounding regions.

    WASHINGTON — Today, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell is in Florida surveying damage and assessing the need for federal resources to support Hurricane Helene response activities. 

    This whole-of-government effort includes the support of more than 2,300 federal personnel and voluntary agencies across six states. More than 800 FEMA personnel are deployed to assist with response efforts and are working to determine the scope of the storm’s impact and coordinate resource support and assistance.

    The Biden-Harris Administration approved emergency declarations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. This type of declaration allows federal resources to begin flowing immediately as damage assessments are conducted to determine what additional resources may be available if a major disaster is declared.

    FEMA’s priority remains providing life-saving and life sustaining support to affected areas. FEMA deployed Urban Search and Rescue teams with more than 1,270 personnel and Swift Water Rescue Capabilities to affected states. Our non-profit partners including the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Convoy of Hope, Heart to Heart International and others are actively supporting survivors by providing emergency sheltering, food, water, clean up kits, healthcare supplies and other disaster relief items. Team Rubicon teams are helping to clear roads while the Salvation Army deployed seven mobile feeding units and crews.

    As people begin to assess damage, it is important to continue listening to local officials for instructions and be aware of the possibility of life-threating post-storm hazards. People can download the free FEMA App available in English and Spanish languages to receive real-time weather alerts and find local emergency shelters in their area.

    People who need help reconnecting with loved ones missing after the hurricane can call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) and provide as much detail available to assist operators in potentially locating missing loved ones. More than 540 American Red Cross volunteers are in the affected areas supporting communities with sheltering needs, reunification efforts and post-storm care.

    What People Can Do Now

    • If you evacuated, do not return home until local officials say it is safe to do so.
       
    • Stay out of floodwaters. People experiencing heavy rain and flooding should not wade through flood waters, which can contain debris, chemicals, waste and wildlife, as well as downed powerlines that can electrically charge the water. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
       
    • Be safe during an outage. If you are without power, use only flashlights or battery-powered lanterns for emergency lighting.
       
    • Text instead of calling. While cellular service is limited in several areas, it’s easier to get in touch with loved ones by texting instead of calling.
       
    • Use generators safely. If there is a power outage, use generators safely. Always use them outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, doors and attached garages. Make sure to keep the generator dry and protected from rain or flooding.
       
    • For people who are beginning to clean up, make sure to document any property damage with photos and video contact your insurance company for assistance and next steps.
       
    • People with a National Flood Insurance Program insurance policy who suffered flood damage can begin filing a claim with a phone call to their flood insurance agent or company.

    Responding to Hurricane Helene is a Whole-of- Community Effort

    Non-profit and charitable organizations are on the frontlines of the response to Hurricane Helene, providing critical support to people and communities. Here are just a few examples of the important work some of these organizations are doing on the ground.

    • American Red Cross (ARC) has more than 540 Red Cross responders deployed to affected areas with another 350 responders in route. As of Saturday morning, at least 1,900 people are in more than 80 shelters. More than 30 ARC Emergency Response Vehicles are supporting and 24 additional vehicles are in route. Anyone who needs a safe place to go can find information on redcross.org or by downloading the free Red Cross Emergency app by texting GETEMERGENCY to 90999.
    • Salvation Army is in Georgia providing meals at six emergency shelters. In Florida, a total of five mobile feeding units are in Tallahassee and 12 are in Perry. The Salvation Army is also responding to requests for cleanup kits and blankets. In North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, the Salvation Army is responding to requests for meal service to communities affected by the storm.     • Capacity Path Relief deployed two teams for community support in Florida’s Big Bend and southwest coastal areas and is expanding support to fill requests from numerous counties. Additional teams are collaborating with local EOCs and coordinating with agency and feeding partners. They are also offering mental health support to teams supporting the response.
    • Convoy of Hope is stationed in Perry, Florida and is distributing disaster supplies to survivors and is communicating with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office to provide support as needed.
    • Heart to Heart International (HHI) is in Florida with hygiene kits and pharmaceuticals/healthcare supplies for survivors if needed. 
    • Crisis Cleanup is currently working to help survivors clean up damage from Hurricane Helene. Organizations that would like to help can register at www.crisiscleanup.org/register. 
    • Food for the Poor will deliver five pallets of hygiene kits to Catholic Charities in Saint Petersburg and Tampa, Florida and are deploying disaster kits which include tarps and hygiene kits, women’s care kits and children’s activity kits.
    • Operation Hope is prepared to support survivors with assistance applications, insurance claims, disaster recovery plans and document recovery. Survivors can find information by visiting www.operationhope.org.

    A mega 7,000-km long ‘Vayu Veer Vijeta’ car rally from Thoise in Ladakh to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is being organised to mark the 92nd anniversary of Indian Air Force (IAF) on October 08, 2024. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh will give a warm send-off to the rally from the National War Memorial, New Delhi on October 01, 2024, before it is formally flagged-off from Thoise, one of the world’s highest altitude air force station at 3,068m above mean sea level, on 8th October. The rally will culminate at Tawang on October 29, 2024.

    The aim of the rally, organised by IAF in coordination with the veterans of Uttarakhand War Memorial, is to raise awareness among the people about the glorious history of IAF; the deeds of valour of the air warriors in different wars & rescue ops; and attract the youth to serve the motherland. Fifty-two (52) air warriors, including women, will be behind the wheels during this mega car rally, which will also witness the participation of former Air Force Chiefs in different legs. Enroute, the air warriors will have 16 halts comprising interactions with students in various colleges and universities. The IAF’s Adventure Cell is leading and coordinating the rally.

    WASHINGTON — Together with state, tribal and federal partners, FEMA is actively supporting Hurricane Helene response efforts. Although the immediate threat of the storm is passing, there are still post-storm hazards that can be life-threatening. Everyone in affected areas should continue to follow instructions from local officials to stay safe. 

    FEMA is not waiting to begin its work assessing impacts. Working with our state partners, we have requested that multiple teams begin flying aerial imaging missions. 

    At the direction of President Biden, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell is on the ground in Florida today surveying damage and assessing the need for federal resources. 

    FEMA has more than 800 deployed staff supporting states affected by the hurricane. Our distribution centers are fully stocked and ready to provide commodities and equipment to any impacted state as required. 

    FEMA is coordinating a federal force of more than 3,200 personnel each contributing their expertise and manpower to this mission. 

    • Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas activated the Surge Capacity Force (SCF). The SCF makes rostered federal employees available to support FEMA’s response and recovery missions. 
    • Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) deployed a total of 24 teams (over 1,270 personnel) to affected states. In Florida, eight US&R teams are actively responding. All teams are equipped with Swift Water Rescue Capabilities. In Georgia, two teams are deployed to support rescue operations. In North Carolina there are four teams. Additional teams and four Swift Water Mission Ready Packages are in route to the impacted areas.
    • U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) crews continue to respond with vessels and aircraft to assist search and rescue and damage assessment activities. Coast Guard personnel are working response activities, including assessing damage to USCG infrastructure and providing opportunity for USCG personnel to assess impacted personal and family property. The Coast Guard continues to respond to urgent distress to save lives, assist those impacted by the storm and support the rapid reopening of impacted ports.
    • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has teams positioned to provide temporary emergency power, with others prepared to deploy if needed. In addition to temporary emergency power, personnel assist the states with assessments of critical infrastructure including water/wastewater treatment facilities, debris management and road and bridge inspections as needed. They have activated six emergency operation centers in the region to coordinate operations. 
    • Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) has Public Health Emergencies in effect for Florida and Georgia to address the health impacts of Hurricane Helene. The declarations give the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) health care providers and suppliers greater flexibility in meeting emergency health needs of Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Their staff on the ground have begun initial assessments of the public health and health care infrastructure. The Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) has positioned medical responders who can move to impacted communities in the region. These personnel include Health Care Situational Assessment teams and National Disaster Medical System’ (NDMS) Disaster Medical Assistance Teams along with several tons of medical equipment and supplies to provide medical surge support.
    • Department of Energy (DOE) activated the Energy Response Organization (ERO) and is closely monitoring impacts and restoration efforts related to Helene, including power, fuel and supply chain interruptions. The ERO and field responders are in contact with industry partners and local officials. DOE responders deployed to the Florida Emergency Operations Center, Georgia Emergency Operations Center and the North Carolina Emergency Operations Center. 
    • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working closely with federal, state, local and Tribal partners to help water systems, prepare for debris management and ensure facilities, including Superfund sites, maintain critical public health and environmental protections. The agency has personnel on the ground in regional and national operations centers who are offering technical assistance and guidance to those affected by Helene. 
    • American Red Cross (ARC) has more than 540 Red Cross responders deployed to affected areas with another 350 responders are in route. As of Saturday morning, reporting indicates that at least 1900 people are still in just over 80 shelters as evacuation orders are lifted. We anticipate this number may change in the coming days and are transitioning from evacuation centers to emergency shelters where needed. There are more than 30 Emergency Response Vehicles currently supporting this event and 2 dozen additional are en route. ARC is prepared to support mass fatality and reunification efforts as well as emergency feeding.     • Salvation Army is in Georgia providing meals at six emergency shelters. In Florida, they have a total of 17 mobile feeding units that will serve Tallahassee (5 units) and Perry (12 units). They have teams in Perry, FL, serving the impacted areas with hot meals. Local service delivery is underway to affected communities, including shelter feeding and two feeding locations. The Salvation Army is also responding to requests for cleanup kits and blankets. In North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, the Salvation Army is responding to requests for meal service to communities affected by the storm.     The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Saturday that it successfully intercepted a surface-to-surface missile launched from Yemen toward Israel.

    The IDF stated that the missile was intercepted outside Israel’s borders.

    The missile triggered sirens in several areas of central Israel, including Tel Aviv.

    The Israeli Magen David Adom emergency health service reported that several people sustained minor injuries while rushing to shelters.

    Hezbollah confirmed on Saturday that its leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed in the Israeli airstrikes targeting the militant group’s command headquarters a day earlier in Dahieh, Beirut’s southern suburbs.

    Previously, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement on Saturday that the Hezbollah leader was killed in an airstrike on the Lebanese organization’s target in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

    The statement said that Ali Karki, commander of the southern front in Hezbollah, and other commanders in the militant group were also killed in the massive airstrike.

    “Warplanes of the Air Force under the precise intelligence guidance of the Military Intelligence and the defense system, attacked the central headquarters of Hezbollah, located underground, under a residential building in Dahieh in Beirut,” according to the statement.

    It added that the attack was carried out while top commanders of Hezbollah were at their headquarters.

    Israel has intensified its airstrikes across Lebanon since Monday, marking the most extensive military action in the region since 2006.

    This marks the latest escalation of the ongoing clashes that began on Oct. 8, 2023, when Hezbollah started launching rockets at Israel in solidarity with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel’s retaliatory artillery fire and airstrikes into southeastern Lebanon.

  • MIL-OSI China: World Insights: Challenges abound as Ishiba poised to lead Japan

    TOKYO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Elected as the new leader of Japan’s ruling party after a heated race, veteran politician Shigeru Ishiba is set to face daunting challenges ranging from restoring public trust to addressing economic stagnation as he prepares to assume the role of Japan’s prime minister.

    The 67-year-old former defense minister narrowly defeated female hopeful Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi in a run-off on Friday as a record nine candidates competed to lead the country’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

    Ishiba is expected to be officially elected Japan’s prime minister on Oct. 1, succeeding outgoing Fumio Kishida to lead a country facing a complex array of pressing issues.

    First and foremost on Ishiba’s task list is to restore public trust in the LDP, whose image has been heavily tarnished by the political funds scandal involving unreported income and misuse of political funds, which led to the indictment of several lawmakers.

    At a press conference following his win, Ishiba has vowed to give his “full effort” to rebuild trust and unity within the LDP, calling for a party that is humble, fair, and transparent, where rules are followed, and the public can hold leaders accountable.

    While the current term of lower house members is to expire in October 2025, Ishiba will also need to decide when to dissolve the lower house, as in Japan, a new prime minister often calls a snap election to dissolve the lower house at an early date to capitalize on a high approval rating to seek a public mandate.

    While indicating that a general election is necessary, Ishiba emphasized the importance of debating key issues with opposition parties before making any decision.

    On the economic front, Ishiba’s economic agenda promises continuity with those of Kishida but aims to make these policies more effective.

    In recent years, sluggish economic growth, wage stagnation, rising prices and the yen’s sharp depreciation have created woes for the Japanese public, and how Ishiba will differentiate his policies to tackle these economic challenges will be a key focus to watch.

    Stressing measures to accelerate real wage growth and boost consumer spending, Ishiba on Friday also highlighted Japan’s population decline as a major concern, reiterating his focus on regional revitalization.

    On foreign policy and national security, Ishiba, considered a defense policy expert, has put forward conservative proposals, including the establishment of an “Asian version of the NATO military alliance” and revisions to war-renouncing Article 9 of the pacifist Constitution. He has declined to say whether he would visit the controversial Yasukuni Shrine as prime minister.

    Regarding Japan-U.S. relations, Ishiba envisions a more equal and mutual Japan-U.S. security alliance, including having Japanese Self-Defense Force bases in the United States, a rare proposal within the conservative LDP.

    In a report on Friday, Japan’s Kyodo News said Ishiba may face a make-or-break moment as the country’s prime minister, citing Yu Uchiyama, a political science professor at the University of Tokyo, as saying, adding the longevity of the new administration hinges on how drastic the next leader’s reforms will be.   • MIL-OSI China: Yemen’s Houthis claim missile attack on Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport

    Yemen’s Houthi group claimed on Saturday that it had launched a missile attack on Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv in Israel.

    In a statement aired by the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV, the group’s military spokesman Yahya Sarea said a “ballistic missile” was fired at Ben Gurion Airport “upon the arrival” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who returned to the country on Saturday after addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.

    Sarea vowed that the group “will continue to respond to Israel’s crimes and will not hesitate to raise the level of escalation in support of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.”

    Earlier in the day, the Israel Defense Forces said it successfully intercepted a surface-to-surface missile launched from Yemen, which triggered air raid sirens across central Israel, including in Tel Aviv.

    This is the second missile attack claimed by the Houthis against Israel within two days after the group claimed a ballistic missile attack on a military target in the Jaffa area of Tel Aviv on Friday.

    Meanwhile, the Houthis declared via al-Masirah TV a three-day mourning over the death of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in Israeli airstrikes on Friday evening.

    The Houthi group, which controls large swathes of northern Yemen, has been attacking “Israeli-linked” shipping near the country’s coastline since November 2023, allegedly to support Palestinians in their conflict with Israelis.

    The group is aligned with the anti-Israel “axis of resistance,” which also includes Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, and militant groups in Iraq and Syria, among others.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Doing What Matters: Future-proofing the Cunningham Highway

    Work is progressing to future-proof the Cunningham Highway, with critical planning funding being directed to long-term improvements in two priority areas.

    The Albanese and Miles Labor Governments jointly committed $20 million for detailed planning on the Cunningham Highway, which will be used to undertake businesses cases on the Ipswich-Rosewood Road (Amberley) intersection and Ripley Road and Swanbank Road interchanges.

    The Australian Government is providing $16 million towards the project, with the Queensland Government providing the remaining $4 million.

    The Ipswich-Rosewood Road (Amberley) intersection planning will investigate options for a long-term solution at the intersection, including grade separation, a bypass or duplication of the highway.

    It will also take into consideration feedback received from the community during the consultation process and focus on improving safety for all users of this important transport connection.

    The Ipswich-Rosewood Road (Amberley) intersection is a key connection for freight and the local community. It also acts as the main access point to Australia’s largest operational military air base – Royal Australian Air Force Base Amberley.  

    This project is part of the Australian Government’s broader $170 million investment in the Cunningham Highway.  

    As planning progresses, the Queensland Government will continue to keep the community and stakeholders updated.
