  • MIL-OSI Australia: UPDATE: Driver reported over serious crash at Newton

    Police are investigating a serious crash at Newton earlier today.

    About 8.50am today Friday 9 May, emergency services were called to Montacute Road and Forest Avenue after reports a van had collided with two pedestrians.

    The female pedestrian, a 48-year-old woman from Newton suffered life-threatening injuries and was conveyed to hospital.

    The male pedestrian, a 51-year-old man from Newton was conveyed to hospital with significant injuries.

    The driver of the van, a 91-year-old-man from Rostrevor was conveyed to hospital for mandatory blood tests.

    Major Crash Officer attended at the scene and investigated the crash and as a result the driver has been interviewed and reported for two counts of dangerous driving and issued an indefinite Instant Loss of Licence.

    He will be summonsed to court at a later date.

    Police are at the scene of an unexplained death in Parakao this afternoon.

    The body of a man was found by ambulance staff at a rural property off Mangakahia Road (State Highway 15) just before 4pm.

    The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are underway into the circumstances.

    The property has been cordoned off and a scene examination will take place.

    A scene guard is in place with a post mortem to be carried out at a later stage.

    These enquiries are in the very early stages and no further information is currently available.

    The all-abilities playground at Riverlinks Park in Clarkson is built for every young adventurer, with a range of play spaces and equipment that integrates learning with play.

    The one-of-a-kind playground includes five themed play areas with equipment that caters to users with diverse physical, sensory and cognitive needs.

    The fully enclosed playground also has a secure play area for enhanced safety and quiet zones for rest and relief.

    It also features the City’s first communication board, created in collaboration with All Abilities Australia to support non-verbal users.

    Wanneroo Deputy Mayor James Rowe said it was fantastic to deliver an accessible and inclusive play space for visitors from our community and beyond to enjoy.

    “This facility is more than a play space; it is a place where children can feel a sense of belonging and safety,” he said.

    “We are grateful to have received a funding contribution of $2.6 million from the WA Government, administered through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

    “This shared investment reflects our joint commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our community and ensuring everyone can enjoy the City of Wanneroo.”

    Minister for Transport, Sport and Recreation, the Hon Rita Saffioti MLA, said supporting projects like this demonstrated the WA Government’s dedication to creating more purpose-built, inclusive places and spaces that children and families can access to stay active and healthy.

    “Using feedback from the local community, the result is an asset accessible to all children, including those with mobility issues and those with cognitive, sensory or social-emotional challenges,” she said.

    “Exploring and enjoying interesting outdoor spaces is an important part of childhood and I congratulate the City of Wanneroo for their commitment to this project.”

    Construction of a Universal Access Toilet was finished this month, marking completion of this important project.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Govt engages with taxi trade

    The Transport Department today iterated that the Government will always listen to the views of the taxi trade, as it announced a meeting is being arranged with a view to enhancing service quality in the sector. 

    The department stressed that the Government’s policy objectives are clear: taxi services must be improved; online car hailing platforms must be regulated; and illegal hire car services must be combated in accordance with the law.

    It added that the Government will maintain liaison with the taxi trade, joining hands to work on enhancements. In recent years, the Government has enacted various measures, including introducing systematic management and technology under the taxi fleet regime, a Taxi-Driver-Offence Points system, and a two-tier penalty system.

    The department said that while the Government is open-minded on the use of online or mobile applications to obtain personalised point-to-point transport services, it is imperative to ensure that passenger transport services supported by the use of such platforms comply with laws and regulations.

    The Government will this year formulate legislative proposals for the regulation of online car hailing platforms, the vehicles that provide associated services, and licensing requirements for drivers.

    Police have been gathering intelligence via different channels in relation to the illegal carriage of passengers for hire or reward. If sufficient evidence is discovered that proves vehicles without the necessary permits are being used for such carriage, Police will take appropriate enforcement actions.

    The Government is studying further improvements to the relevant legislation to strengthen efforts to combat illegal carriage, including disqualifying the drivers concerned.

    Where sufficient evidence is available to show that a vehicle has been involved in the offence of illegal carriage of passengers for hire or reward, it may be impounded even if the identity of the driver cannot be confirmed.

    He was 26-year-old Mitchell Douglas McLeary, of Cromwell.

    Police extend our condolences to his loved ones.

    Disqualified driver charged with multiple driving offences

    A 30-year-old Scottsdale man has had his vehicle confiscated indefinitely and been charged with multiple driving offences after he was arrested in Scottsdale on Wednesday morning. 
    Police will allege the man, who was disqualified from driving, drove an unregistered motor vehicle in the Launceston and Scottsdale areas multiple times over the previous week. 
    The man has been charged with three counts of driving whilst disqualified, three counts of driving an unregistered motor vehicle and three counts of driving a motor vehicle with no premium cover. The vehicle was also bearing a false registration plate.

    A man who went missing in Tsuen Wan has been located.

    Wong Kwun-wai, aged 27, went missing after he was last seen at Tsuen Wan West Station Public Transport Interchange on April 7 night. His family made a report to Police on April 10.

    The man turned up at police station to cancel the missing person report on May 6 afternoon. He sustained no injuries and no suspicious circumstances were detected.

         A spokesman for the Transport Department (TD) today (May 9) said that the Government will, as always, be open to listen to the views of the taxi trade and a meeting is being arranged to maintain close communication, with a view to enhancing the service quality of personalised point-to-point transport.

         “The Government’s policy objective has been very clear: taxi service has to be improved, online hailed car platforms have to be regulated while illegal hire car services have to be combated in accordance with the law. We will continue to combat the illegal carriage of passengers for hire or reward activities to safeguard the safety and interests of the public. We will maintain liaison with the taxi trade in parallel to set out the Government’s stance and work directions in detail, joining hands to offer ideas and suggestions on enhancing personalised point-to-point service,” the spokesman said.

    Improvement of taxi service

         The Government is determined to enhance the quality of taxi services and has put forward various measures in recent years through a multi-pronged approach. Among them, systematic management and technology have been introduced under the taxi fleet regime. The Government will also mandate taxis to provide e-payment means and install in-vehicle cameras, dash cameras and global navigation satellite systems in all taxi compartments through legislative amendments, thereby improving passengers’ riding experiences. Meanwhile, the Government has introduced the Taxi-Driver-Offence Points system and the two-tier penalty system to enhance the deterrent effect against illegal acts by taxi drivers. The taxi fleet operators are working intensively and the Government hopes that they will soon commence operations to provide quality taxi service.

    Regulation of online hailed car platforms

         The spokesman reiterated that, while the Government is open-minded in respect of the use of different communication technologies via online or mobile applications to obtain personalised point-to-point transport services through online hailing services, it is imperative to ensure that the passenger transport services supported by the use of the platforms concerned comply with the laws and regulations, thereby safeguarding the safety and interests of passengers.

         The TD is conducting a study on the overall demand and supply of personalised point-to-point transport services. The Government will, after holistically considering the report of the Working Group for Enhancing Personalised Point-to-Point Transport Services under the Transport Advisory Committee and the views and relevant data collected, formulate legislative proposals on the regulation of online car hailing platforms, vehicles that may provide services complying with the regulations, and relevant licensing requirements for the drivers within 2025.

    Combating illegal hire car services in accordance with the law

         The spokesman stressed that the Government is determined to continuously combat the illegal carriage of passengers for hire or reward activities. The TD has again issued letters to warn various platform operators recently that their services must comply with relevant legislative provisions. Upon receipt of suspected cases, the TD will refer them to the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) for follow-up, subject to the situation.

         The HKPF has been taking enforcement actions against illegal carriage of passengers for hire or reward through gathering intelligence via different channels. If there is sufficient evidence proving suspected vehicles without a valid hire car permit are being used for illegal carriage of passengers for hire or reward, the HKPF will immediately take appropriate enforcement actions. In addition, the Government is studying further improvements to the relevant legislation to strengthen efforts in combating illegal carriage of passengers for hire or reward, including disqualifying the driver concerned from driving. Furthermore, when sufficient evidence is available to show that the vehicle concerned has been involved in the offence of illegal carriage of passengers for hire or reward, it may be impounded even if the identity of the driver cannot be confirmed. The proposed legislative amendments will be submitted to the Legislative Council in due course.

    The much-loved TV series Austin will be back for a second season.

    Filmed mostly in Canberra, the first season shone a spotlight on the ACT and was a hit with audiences.

    Season two will begin filming in the UK early in December 2024. It will air on ABC TV in 2025.

    Tasmania Police is appealing for information to help identify three suspects after a delivery driver was threatened with a knife and had his car stolen while working in Gagebrook late Thursday night.The male driver was not physically hurt during the incident in Briar Crescent, Gagebrook, about 11.10pm last night, in which the offenders also stole cash after the driver attended a private residence.The driver was threatened by three suspects with one of the suspects in possession of a knife prior to stealing his car keys and driving off in the stolen vehicle, which also contained the driver’s mobile phone.The driver went to a nearby residence seeking assistance and it was here he was able to contact police.Officers from Bridgewater Police conducted patrols in the Gagebrook and Brighton areas, with the vehicle later found abandoned in bushland off Boronia Place, Gagebrook.Anyone who may have seen a gold Suzuki Liana driven in the Gagebrook area late Thursday night or early Friday morning, or have information regarding the armed robbery, can contact Bridgewater CIB on 131 444 or report it to Crime Stoppers Tasmania on 1800 333 000 or crimestopperstas.com.au.   • MIL-OSI Security: Bay State Resident Charged in Alleged Attempt to Assassinate a Cabinet Member Nominee at the U.S. Capitol

    Defendant Surrendered to Officers, Admitted to Possessing a Knife and Two ‘Molotov Cocktails’

    WASHINGTON –  Ryan Michael English, 24, of South Deerfield, Massachusetts, was charged in a two-count indictment, filed today in U.S. District Court, with the attempted assassination of a cabinet member nominee and carrying a dangerous weapon on the Grounds of the U.S. Capitol Building. The charges are related to English’s Jan. 27, 2025, alleged attempt to take a knife and two improvised Molotov cocktails into the building for the purposes of attacking a presidential cabinet nominee.

    The charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. and Chief J. Thomas Manger of the U.S. Capitol Police. English, who is in custody, had an initial court appearance this afternoon. 

    English, aka “Reily,” is charged with carrying a dangerous weapon or incendiary device on the grounds of the Capitol and unlawful possession of an incendiary device.

    According to the charging documents, on January 27, 2025, about 3:12 p.m., English approached a U.S. Capitol Police Officer near the South Door of the Capitol Building and stated “I’d like to turn myself in.” English further admitted to possessing a knife and two “Molotov cocktails.”

    Officers searched English and recovered a folding knife, as well as two improvised incendiary devices from the inside pockets of English’s jacket. The devices were constructed of 50 milliliter bottles of vodka with a grey cloth affixed to its top. Police recovered a green lighter from another pocket.

    During the search, English allegedly confessed to being at the Capitol to kill a presidential nominee who was testifying before the U.S. Senate. Police recovered a note to a family member in a pocket that said, in part, “This is terrible but I cant do nothing while nazis kill my sisters…Im so sorry for lying and plotting and lying.”

    English admitted to traveling to the District of Columbia with the intention of killing a government official or burning down a think-tank based in Washington, D.C.

    This case is being investigated by the U.S. Capitol Police. It is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan M. Horan.

    A criminal indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

  • MIL-OSI Security: FBI New York Announces Arrests as Part of National Crimes Against Children Operation: Restore Justice

    The FBI New York Field Office participated in the arrests of seven subjects as part of the nationwide Operation Restore Justice. This coordinated enforcement operation by all 55 FBI field offices was a sweeping five-day FBI initiative to identify, track, and arrest child sex predators across the country.

    “The FBI is relentless in our commitment to combatting child exploitation and abuse,” stated Assistant Director in Charge Christopher G. Raia. “The FBI New York Field Office will never cease in its mission to apprehend anyone who preys on these vulnerable members of society.” 

    The cases were investigated by the FBI/NYPD Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, as well as the FBI Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, in partnership with the United States Attorneys’ Offices for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Significant investigative assistance was also provided by the FBI Boston Field Office, the FBI Detroit Field Office, Homeland Security Investigations, New York City Department of Probation, the Pennsylvania State Police, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, the Town of Newburgh Police Department, Town of Wallkill Police Department, and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. “These arrests would not have been possible without the assistance from our local and federal law enforcement partners,” said ADIC Raia.

    Last week alone, the FBI arrested 205 subjects and rescued 115 children across the country during the surge of resources deployed for Operation Restore Justice. The subjects arrested in this operation included those in positions of public trust—law enforcement, members of the military, and teachers. Others are your neighbors, proving criminal activity can be found even in the most familiar places. They’re accused of various crimes, including the production, distribution, and possession of child sexual abuse material, online enticement and transportation of minors, and child sex trafficking.

    But our work didn’t just happen last week. Throughout the entire month of April, the FBI, along with our state and local law enforcement partners, additionally arrested more than 190 perpetrators on charges related to crimes against children. With nearly 400 arrests in one month, these actions are the direct result of the FBI’s continued efforts to track down and stop sexual predators before they can harm more victims. 

    This operation was the result of a dedicated and targeted effort, reflecting countless hours of work by hundreds of special agents, intel analysts, and other FBI personnel. It further emphasizes the FBI’s unwavering commitment to protecting children and raising awareness about the dangers they face. While the Bureau works relentlessly to investigate these crimes every day, April serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prevention, community education, and the FBI’s never-ending pursuit of criminals who exploit our children. 

    The FBI proactively identifies individuals involved in child sexual exploitation and the production of child sexual abuse material through our far-reaching, nationwide network of personnel and law enforcement partners. The Violent Crimes Against Children (VCAC) program provides a rapid, proactive, and comprehensive capacity to counter all threats of abuse against children. This capacity leverages partnerships within the FBI’s 89 Child Exploitation Human Trafficking Task Forces (CEHTTFs) across the country. 

    Additionally, the FBI has intelligence analysts assigned to address the VCAC threat, both at Headquarters and the field. The FBI also leads a Violent Crimes Against Children International Task Force, which includes nearly 100 international task force officers representing over 60 countries to expand our ability to address the threat worldwide. 

    The FBI also partners with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which receives and shares tips about possible child sexual exploitation received through its 24/7 hotline at 1-800-THE-LOST and on missingkids.org. In further partnership and collaboration with NCMEC, the FBI launched the Endangered Child Alert Program (ECAP) in 2004 to identify individuals involved in the sexual abuse of children and the production of child sexual abuse material. To date, ECAP has identified 36 individuals.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Arrest – Assault worker – Alice Springs

    A 17-year-old male has been arrested in relation to the alleged assault of a worker, theft and being armed with an offensive weapon in Alice Springs yesterday afternoon.

    Around 4:45pm, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports of an armed person threatening staff at a retail store on Railway Terrace. The youth is alleged to have attempted to steal items from the store before an employee of the business intervened and directed him to leave.

    A short time later, the offender returned to the store and allegedly approached an employee of the business and produced a knife from his pocket. He then threatened to stab the employee while jabbing the air with the weapon. He continued to threaten the employee until police arrived at which point he fled the location, discarding the knife under a parked car.

    The Territory Safety Division and Alice Springs general duties officers coordinated a response resulting in the arrest of the 17-year-old male youth. He has since been charged with:

    • 1 x Assault worker
    • 1 x Theft
    • 1 x Armed with an offensive weapon

    He was remanded to appear in Alice Springs Court on 9 May 2025.

    Acting Superintendent of the Territory Safety Division Alex Noonan said, “This type of offending is unacceptable, and members of the community should not be subjected to violence in their workplace.

    “I commend the efforts of all involved in the rapid response, which led to the swift apprehension of the offender.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Call for information – Burglary – Tennant Creek

    Police are appealing to witnesses after a burglary occurred in Tennant Creek yesterday.

    At around 3:00pm, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report that a residence on Haddock Street was unlawfully entered with cash and multiple personal items being reported stolen from the location.

    It is alleged that the unknown offender gained entry by damaging the back door of the residence before rummaging through cupboards and bedrooms throughout the house.

    Police attended, a crime scene was established, and investigations remain ongoing.

    overnor Kathy Hochul today directed State agencies to prepare for heavy rain and the potential for localized flooding as parts of the state are forecast to be impacted by periods of heavy rain through this weekend. New Yorkers across the Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier, Mid-Hudson and Capital Region could see up to 3 inches of rain beginning tonight into Saturday and are cautioned to be vigilant in impacted areas. Parts of the North Country, Finger Lakes and Central New York could see between 1 to 1.5 inches of rain. Following recent heavy rains, minor to moderate flooding could occur in these areas. The Governor also launched Triple Three Triple One today — a real-time text-based emergency and weather alert system. New Yorkers are strongly encouraged to text their county or borough of residence to 333111 to stay up-to-date on the rain and potential flooding expected this weekend.

    “As heavy rains approach parts of the State, I’m directing State agencies to be on standby to support New Yorkers in the path of rainfall and potential flooding,” Governor Hochul said. “All New Yorkers should take out their phones and text their county or borough of residence to 333111 to sign up for our new emergency alert system and get real-time weather information — this is how we better prepare ourselves for inclement weather.”

Once the text message is sent, users will automatically be enrolled and begin receiving emergency and weather alerts when they occur in their selected county. In New York City, text the name of your borough with no spaces. For example, StatenIsland. For the entire New York City metro area, text NewYorkCity. The system is not case sensitive. Users can also register to receive alerts for multiple counties by texting additional county names, one at a time. This will allow residents to stay up to date on alerts in areas where their loved ones may live. It is free to sign up for Triple Three Triple One and the service is available on all cellular carriers. Standard text messaging and data rates may apply.

    Flood Watches and Warnings are currently in effect for several areas of the state. For a complete listing of weather alerts, visit the National Weather Service website at alerts.weather.gov.

    Agency Preparations

    Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services
    The Division’s Office of Emergency Management is in contact with their local counterparts and is prepared to facilitate requests for assistance. OEM has enhanced their monitoring, and the Office of Fire Prevention and Control has activated the Fire Operations Center. Water rescue teams will be pre-staged to deploy if needed and state stockpiles are ready to deploy emergency response assets and supplies as needed. The State Watch Center is monitoring the storm track and statewide impacts closely.

    Department of Transportation
    The State Department of Transportation is monitoring weather conditions and prepared to respond with 3,649 supervisors and operators available statewide. All field staff are available to fully engage and respond.

    Statewide equipment numbers are as follows:

    • 1,503 large dump trucks
    • 333 large loaders
    • 89 chippers
    • 85 tracked and wheeled excavators
    • 33 water pumps
    • 32 traffic and tree crew bucket trucks
    • 30 traffic tower platforms
    • 16 vacuum trucks with sewer jets

    Thruway Authority
    The Thruway Authority has 658 operators and supervisors prepared to respond to any wind or flood related issues across the state with small to medium sized excavators, plow/dump trucks, large loaders, portable VMS boards, portable light towers, smaller generators, smaller pumps and equipment hauling trailers, as well as signage and other traffic control devices available for any detours or closures. Variable Message Signs and social media are utilized to alert motorists of weather conditions on the Thruway.

Motorists can also sign up for TRANSalert e-mails which provide the latest traffic conditions along the Thruway, follow @ThruwayTraffic on X, formerly known as Twitter, and visit thruway.ny.gov to see an interactive map showing traffic conditions for the Thruway and other New York State roadways.

    Department of Public Service
    New York’s utilities have approximately 5,500 workers available statewide to engage in damage assessment, response, repair and restoration efforts across New York State, as necessary. Agency staff will track utilities’ work throughout the event and ensure utilities shift appropriate staffing to regions that experience the greatest impact.

    New York State Police
    State Police instructed all Troopers to remain vigilant and will deploy extra patrols to affected areas as needed. All four-wheel drive vehicles are in service, and all watercraft and specialty vehicles are staged and ready for deployment.

    Department of Environmental Conservation
    The Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Emergency Management staff, Environmental Conservation Police Officers, Forest Rangers, and regional staff remain on alert and continue to monitor weather forecasts. Working with partner agencies, DEC is prepared to coordinate resource deployment of all available assets, including first responders, to targeted areas in preparation for potential impacts due to heavy rainfall and flooding.

    DEC reminds local officials to watch for potential flooding in their communities. Municipalities are encouraged to undertake local assessments of flood-prone areas and to remove any accumulating debris. DEC permits and authorization are not required to remove debris unless stream banks or beds will be disturbed by debris removal and/or the use of heavy equipment. Municipalities and local governments are advised to contact DEC’s Regional Permit Administrators if assistance is required and to help determine if a permit is necessary.

    If a permit is necessary, DEC can issue Emergency Authorizations to expedite approval of projects in place of an individual permit. DEC approves Emergency Authorizations for situations that are deemed an emergency based on the immediate protection of life, health, general welfare, property, or natural resources.

    Unpredictable weather and storms in the Adirondacks, Catskills, and other backcountry areas can create unexpectedly hazardous conditions. Visitors should be prepared with proper clothing and equipment for rain, snow, ice, and colder temperatures to ensure a safe outdoor experience. Trails have mixed conditions of snow, ice, slush, and mud.

    Hikers are advised to temporarily avoid all high-elevation trails, as well as trails that cross rivers and streams. Hikers in the Adirondacks are encouraged to check the Adirondack Backcountry Information webpages for updates on trail conditions, seasonal road closures, and general recreation information.

    Backcountry visitors should Hike Smart and follow proper safety guidelines. Plan trips accordingly. In an emergency, call 9-1-1. To request Forest Ranger assistance, call 1-833-NYS-RANGERS.

    Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
    New York State Park Police and park personnel are on alert and closely monitoring weather conditions and impacts. Park visitors should visit parks.ny.gov, check the free mobile app, or call their local park office for the latest updates regarding park hours, openings and closings.

    Flood Safety

    • Know your area’s type of flood risk — visit FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center.
    • Have a flood emergency plan in place that includes considerations for your children, pets and neighbors.
    • If you live in a flood-prone area, document your belongings and valuables. Keep important documents in a waterproof container. Create digital, password-protected copies of important documents, pictures, and other items.
    • Obtain flood insurance coverage under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Homeowner’s policies do not cover flooding.
    • Monitor your local weather forecast and follow any warnings that may be broadcast.
    • If you are advised by emergency officials to take immediate action such as evacuation, do not wait – follow all orders promptly.
    • Traveling during a flood can be extremely dangerous. One foot of moving water can sweep a vehicle away. Never walk, swim or drive through flood waters. If you have doubts, remember: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”
    • Consider those with access and functional needs to determine if they are prepared for a flood emergency where they live and work.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Jamestown man going to prison for to distributing child pornography

    BUFFALO, N.Y.-U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that Brandon G. Uber, 24, of Jamestown, NY, who was convicted of distribution of child pornography, was sentenced to serve 210 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.

    Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango, who handled the case, stated that in March 2021, Uber sent a Snapchat user image and video files of a 16-year-old minor female victim engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Uber also received images and videos of child pornography from other users of social media applications. In addition, Uber had online conversations with another known minor female victim, during which he persuaded the victim to create sexually explicit videos of herself to send to him. Uber stored the child pornography he received and distributed on various electronic devices that were seized during the investigation, including two cell phones and two tablets.

    The sentencing is the result of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Erin Keegan, the New York State Police, under the direction of Major Amie Feroleto, and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff James Quattrone.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Man charged with number of shoplifting and burglary offences

    Police have put a prolific shoplifter before the courts in Hamilton, after arresting and charging him with a number of shoplifting and burglary offences.

    The 42-year-old male faces 10 charges of shoplifting and six charges of burglary from incidents over the last six months.

    The stolen property from these incidents is believed to be worth over $10,000.

    The man is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court today (Friday 9 May).

    Police acknowledge the strain this type of offending has on local businesses, and the help of footage that stores provided assisted us in making this arrest.

    Police do not tolerate this behaviour, and we continue to encourage retailers to support suspicious or illegal activity.

    Indian Navy’s maiden initiative of Indian Ocean Ship Sagar, jointly crewed by personnel from nine IOR Navies, concluded its month long deployment in SW IOR region and returned to Kochi on 08 May 25. Vice Admiral V Srinivas, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command congratulated the crew of India and nine friendly foreign countries during the grand reception ceremony held at Naval Base, Kochi. The successful completion of the deployment marks a new chapter in maritime cooperation and underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding collective maritime interests, capacity building and enduring partnership with IOR nations.

    IOS Sagar was flagged off by the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh from Karwar on 05 Apr 25. During the deployment, the ship undertook port calls at Dar-es-Salaam, Nacala, Port Louis, Port Victoria and Male. The key highlights of the mission included joint naval exercises, professional & cultural exchanges and joint EEZ surveillance of key IOR nations – Tanzania, Mozambique, Mauritius & Seychelles. Strengthening regional maritime cooperation between India and African nations, the ship participated in AIKEYME 2025 alongside INS Chennai & INS Kesari, which was jointly hosted by India and Tanzania from 13 – 18 Apr 25. The exercise provided an opportunity for the crew of lOS Sagar to participate in the joint harbour phase and interact with the participating Navies. At Mozambique, a range of collaborative activities and community engagements were held promoting operational synergy and interoperability with the Mozambique Navy.

    Reinforcing the enduring bond between India and Mauritius, the crew of IOS Sagar had fruitful engagement with the Mauritius Police Force and undertook coordinated patrol with the Mauritius Coast Guard. Visit to Port Victoria, Seychelles was marked with cross deck visits, training exchange, joint Yoga sessions and maritime engagement with Seychelles Defence Force. The ship held collaborative maritime security and regional outreach mission at Maldives prior to entering Kochi. This deployment exemplifies Indian Navy’s continued engagement with regional Navies and maritime security stakeholders of IOR nations to train together, exchange best practices and enhance interoperability and mutual understanding.

    It was a unique experience for the 44 international crew of nine partner nations – Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Tanzania who jointly manned the ship alongside Indian Navy crew, truly signifying the motto of ‘One Ocean One Mission’. The journey of IOS Sagar which commenced with the combined harbour and sea training phase at SNC, Kochi in Mar 25 has been truly memorable for all the crew members. The professional and seamless integration of the international crew working together as a well knit and cohesive team truly reflects the spirit of camaraderie and maritime friendship. The mission is a testament to Indian Navy’s commitment as the ‘First Responder’ and ‘Preferred Security Partner’ in IOR towards the Gol’s strategic vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Region).

     Today’s announcement by the Commissioner of Police that Police will review the 2017 swimming training policy change in light of some recruits not receiving training while at the Police College is welcome and overdue, says Police Minister Mark Mitchell.
    “When this policy was changed under the previous Government in 2017, I questioned this decision at select committee as I felt it was wrong for a coastal nation like ours, where Police Officers are often the first to provide assistance to people in the water, to relax the swimming requirements.
    “The Labour Government at the time was adamant there would be no problem lowering the standard and that water competence would still be met.  
    “Recent reporting has highlighted and unearthed the fact that the previous government’s approach has taken the focus off a swim standard.  It has become clear that the relaxation of the policy has had the effect of Police graduating the College in some cases having not been tested,” says Mr Mitchell.
    “Since the Coalition Government was formed, Police have been working extremely hard to recruit against our target of 500 new officers by 27 November 2025. 
    “Myself and Minister Costello have been clear that that was not to come at the expense of standards.  What has become obvious is that decisions made under the previous government around standards need to be revisited, and I welcome this decision by the Commissioner.  
    “As a government we feel strongly that a swimming standard is important for both Police and public safety, and in coming into Government we supported a return to a 20-week recruit training course, rather than the 16-week in place when we came into government.  
    “I am extremely proud of our police officers who do outstanding work and deserve to be supported through a comprehensive training programme that includes water safety.”

    Detectives from the Crime Command are calling for information after a woman was located seriously injured on the bike path near the intersection of Holland Place and Rapid Creek Road, yesterday afternoon.

    At approximately 6:10pm,  police received reports of a woman of Aboriginal appearance being found unresponsive on the bike path with injuries consistent with an assault. She was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment and is currently in a stable condition.

    The identity of the alleged offender/offenders remains unknown.

    Detectives are currently investigating and urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV or dashcam footage to contact police at 131 444 and quote reference P25126294.

    Detectives from the Major Crash Unit are currently investigating a fatal pedestrian strike in Virginia this morning.

    Around 4am, police received reports that a 43-year-old woman had been struck by a vehicle on the Stuart Highway, around 500 metres north of Virginia Road, Virginia.

    The vehicle stopped at the scene and the woman was declared deceased upon emergency services arrival.

    Both inbound lanes of the Stuart highway have been closed and diversions are currently in place with traffic re-entering the highway at Morgan Road. It is expected diversions will remain in place until midday.

    Anyone with information or dash-cam footage, particularly if you saw a pedestrian in that area this morning, is urged to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference P25126714.

    The lives lost on Territory roads now stands at 10.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Arrest – Aggravated assault – Nightcliff

    Officers from the Territory Safety Division have arrested a male youth in relation to allegations of going armed in public, damaging multiple vehicles and threatening/attempting to assault members of the public.

    At about 2pm yesterday, the youth is alleged to have approached the first victim on the corner of Progress Drive and Boetdoemba street, threatened to punch her before attempting to punch her in the head. The victim was forced to take evasive action in order to avoid being struck before running from the offender. Shortly after this incident the offender allegedly armed himself with a metal pole and a glass bottle before walking along Progress Drive towards Bagot Road. The offender then allegedly threw the pole at a vehicle,  causing damage and frightening the occupants, before rearming himself with the pole and continuing  to walk along Progress Drive. The offender allegedly approached one of the stationary vehicles containing a female and two young children and threatened them by raising the metal pole up and motioning as though he was going to smash the windscreen of the vehicle. The actions of the offender terrified the female and children inside the vehicle.

    The youth continued  with this behaviour damaging further vehicles driving through the area by allegedly throwing a bottle at one and striking another vehicle multiple times with the metal pole.

    Officers from the Territory Safety Division responded to the incident, locating the offender walking along Progress Drive armed with two metal poles. The offender was subsequently arrested by police. 

    The youth, aged 15, was charged with:

    • 3 x Aggravated Assault
    • 2 x Damage to Property
    • 1 x Endanger Occupants of Vehicle
    • 1 x Going Armed in Public

    He was remanded to appear in court today.

    Acting Superintendent of the Territory Safety Division Alex Noonan said “This type of offending is unacceptable and members of the community should not be subjected to this level of violence and senseless destruction. The quick and decisive action of the officers involved is to be commended and prevented further escalation.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: South Lake Tahoe Man Indicted for Distribution of Fentanyl Causing Death

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A federal grand jury returned an indictment today against Timothy Austin Pannell, 32, of South Lake Tahoe, charging him with distribution of fentanyl causing death, Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith announced.

    According to court documents, on the morning of Feb. 12, 2024, South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting multiple overdoses at a residence in South Lake Tahoe. First responders arrived and found four individuals deceased in the residence. A fifth victim survived the overdose.

    It is alleged that two of the men found deceased that morning had met with Pannell, a.k.a. “Frog,” the night before, following a Super Bowl party, in the parking lot of a church in South Lake Tahoe. There, Pannell sold them fentanyl that he represented as cocaine. The two men returned to the residence, where they shared what they believed to be cocaine with three others at the house.

    This case is the product of an investigation by the FBI, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, and the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney James Conolly is prosecuting the case.

    Pannell is currently in federal custody, pending trial.

    If convicted, Pannell faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison and a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison and a $1 million fine. Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

    Four people have been arrested, and drugs and a firearm seized, after Tasman District Police and District Organised Crime Group disrupted an operation supplying methamphetamine into the district this week.

    Intelligence gathered by district staff suggested one or more individuals were frequently travelling to Auckland to collect methamphetamine, then they and their associates were selling it into the Blenheim and West Coast communities, particularly the community of Westport.

    On Tuesday, Police commenced an operation to intercept two men as they travelled down the country.

    They were met in Picton in the afternoon and their vehicle seized and searched. About 500g of methamphetamine was located.

    Simultaneously, search warrants were carried out at addresses in Westport and Auckland.

    At a Westport address, a sawn-off shotgun and 15 ounces of cannabis prepared for supply were located.

    In total, three men, aged 53, 49 and 56, and a 36-year-old woman were arrested and jointly charged with possession of methamphetamine for supply.

    The 53-year-old man and the woman have also been charged with possession of cannabis for supply and unlawful possession of a firearm.

    Police are not ruling out further arrests and charges.

    We are pleased to have put a stop to this activity, which has been bringing illicit drugs into our communities and causing misery for those suffering from addiction and their families.

    We will not tolerate this type of offending and hope these arrests send a message to anyone else who is looking to profit from other people’s misfortune.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Tucson Residents Charged with Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence

    TUCSON, Ariz. – Hassan Omar Kassim, 19, and Alexandra Brooke Wisdom, 19, of Tucson, were arrested on May 6, 2025, and charged by criminal complaint for Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence, Aid and Abet, and Conspiracy to commit the same offense.

    On April 20, 2025, a Tucson Police Department officer assigned to the Operations Division West (“ODW”) Community Response Team (“CRT”) was conducting operations in the area of Stone Avenue and Fort Lowell in Tucson, Arizona. The officer was dressed in plain clothes and driving an unmarked City of Tucson vehicle when he observed a dark colored car traveling southbound at a high rate of speed. The officer followed the vehicle and broadcast its license plate number to other members of ODW CRT. The vehicle then turned, and an individual leaned out of the rear passenger window of the car and fired a gun at the officer’s unmarked vehicle. The occupants of the car continued to engage the officer, including making a U-turn during which additional shots were fired by the rear passenger. The officer was unharmed. A marked patrol vehicle responded to the area and attempted to stop the car, but the occupants failed to yield and after a short pursuit, officers lost sight of the car. Through a subsequent investigation, detectives and special agents identified Kassim as one of the occupants of the car during the shooting. They also determined that Wisdom was in the car before and after the shooting, and that Wisdom drove and abandoned the vehicle sometime after fleeing from police.

    The National Public Safety Partnership (PSP) was established by the U.S. Department of Justice to provide an innovative framework to enhance federal support of state, local, and tribal law enforcement and prosecution authorities in enhancing public safety. PSP began as a pilot program, the Violence Reduction Network, in 2014 and is designed to promote interagency coordination by leveraging specialized law enforcement expertise with dedicated prosecutorial resources to promote public and community safety. PSP serves as a DOJ-wide program that enables participating sites to consult with and receive expedited, coordinated training and technical assistance, and an array of resources from DOJ to enhance local public safety strategies. This model enables DOJ to provide jurisdictions of different sizes and diverse needs with data-driven, evidence-based strategies tailored to the unique local needs of participating cities to build their capacities to address violent crime challenges. PSP has engaged with more than 60 sites since the program’s inception.

    A criminal complaint is simply a method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

    The Tucson Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation in this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam D. Rossi, District of Arizona, Tucson, is handling the prosecution.
