MIL-OSI USA: Monitoring for Sharks Along Long Island Beaches

head of Fourth of July weekend and in preparation for beach and swimming season, Governor Kathy Hochul today updated New Yorkers on measures to watch out for sharks and other potentially dangerous marine life at Long Island State Parks this summer. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), expanded and updated surveillance capability, including new drones and drone operators, at Long Island State Park beaches.

“Our Long Island State Park beaches are cherished by New Yorkers and visitors alike — perfect places to get offline, get outside and enjoy the outdoors.” Governor Hochul said. “We are continuing to strengthen our shark surveillance capabilities and safety tactics at these beaches to help protect these treasured summertime traditions. I encourage all beachgoers to stay safe, stay alert and always follow the direction of lifeguards and park staff.”

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) lifeguards continuously scan and patrol the waters from shore and by surfboat and personal watercraft for any dangerous marine life, such as sharks. Park Police and Park staff actively patrol the beachfront as well, using drones to search the water for dangerous marine life or large schools of fish that may attract them. State Parks’ expanded surveillance capabilities this summer include: 
- Added 6 drones to its 22 currently in operation for a total of 28 drones;
- Trained 8 new drone pilots for a total of 48 drone operators among operations staff, lifeguards and Park Police; and
- Assigned one large enterprise drone to Park Police with thermal imaging, laser range finding, and high-quality cameras to allow for night-time surveillance and patrols in adverse weather conditions. This drone can also drop personal flotation devices in emergencies. 
When there are shark sightings and/or interactions in State Parks beaches, swimming is suspended, and all swimmers are cleared from the water. State Parks works with the DEC to confirm potential shark sightings. Swimming is allowed to resume at least one hour after the last confirmed sighting. State Park lifeguards, Park Police and park staff stay on high alert and patrol the waters for dangerous marine life. In addition, the Long Island Coastal Awareness Group, composed of more than 200 individuals from municipalities, agencies, and private beach operators stretching from Queens through Long Island, is notified so they may take appropriate action in their respective jurisdictions.

Being aware of rip currents, following the State’s shark safety guidance, and keeping in mind that our coastal areas are part of a wild and natural marine ecosystem will help swimmers avoid danger while enjoying some fun in the sun. Thanks to Governor Hochul, DEC and our partners at State Parks have the necessary tools to keep an eye on the water and help ensure all beachgoers recreate safely.”

New Yorkers are encouraged to follow shark safety guidance: 
- Avoid areas with schools of fish, splashing fish, or diving seabirds;
- Avoid swimming at dusk, night, and dawn;
- Avoid murky water;
- Swim, paddle and surf in groups;
- Stay close to shore, where your feet can touch the bottom; and
- Always follow the instructions of lifeguards and Parks’ staff.
Humans assume risk whenever they enter any wild environment, whether on land or in the water. Although it is impossible to eliminate risk altogether, ocean users can modify their behavior to minimize potential interactions with sharks and reduce overall risk. When in the ocean, follow DEC’s shark safety guidelines to minimize the potential for negative interactions with sharks.

New Technology Helps Improve Awareness of Rip Currents
In the Long Island Region of New York, State Parks purchased two virtual reality headsets to improve public awareness and understanding of the dangers of rip currents. Members of the public can use these headsets at water safety outreach events at New York State Parks’ beaches, May 31-September 6, 2025. The technology is bilingual, with instruction available in both English and Spanish. The headsets employ technology developed by Hofstra University Professor Jase Bernhardt and developer Frank Martin, funded by New York Sea Grant.

Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that are prevalent along coastlines. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), lifeguards rescue tens of thousands of people from rip currents in the U.S. every year, but it is estimated that 100 people are killed by rip currents annually.

Rip currents usually form near a shallow point in the water, and can happen at any beach with breaking waves, including the beaches on the Great Lakes. If you are caught in a rip current, remain calm and don’t fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current, and float or tread water if you begin to tire.  Learn more about rip currents.

The Long Island Region Water Safety Education Program initiative started at Robert Moses Field 5 last year. For summer 2025, programming has been expanded to other parks in the region, including:

MIL-OSI Security: Rochester Man Who Lured Minor to Hotel for Sex Pleads Guilty

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that Jonathan Woody, 31, of Rochester, NY, pleaded guilty to coercion and enticement of a minor, before U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa. The charge carries a minimum penalty of 10 years in prison, maximum penalty of life and a $250,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle P. Rossi, who is handling the case, stated that in January 2024, Woody engaged in sexually explicit online and text communications with a 13-year-old child that he met on social media. On January 2, 2024, Woody paid for an Uber to transport the child to a hotel in Greece, NY, where he rented a room. While at the hotel, Woody provided alcohol and marijuana and engaged in sexual acts with the child. After realizing that the child was missing from home, the child’s family called 911 to initiate a missing person investigation. The child returned home, at which time law enforcement learned of Woody’s interactions with the child. Subsequent investigation resulted in the identification and arrest of Woody.

The plea is the result of an investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Todd Baxter, the Greece Police Department, under the direction of Chief Michael Wood, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Child Exploitation Task Force, under the direction of Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Mark Grimm.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 30, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Siragusa.

Throughout the year, play parks across the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon borough have experienced incidents of vandalism that not only cost the ratepayer money but also prevent children from enjoying vital play time and outdoor activities.

These acts of damage – ranging from broken swings and burned slides to graffiti and smashed glass – often lead to the temporary closure of parks until repairs can be made.

This means children across the borough miss out on safe, local spaces to play, exercise and socialise with friends – particularly during the school holidays when these parks are needed most. Vandalism discourages families from using the parks leading to less physical activity and community interaction.

“This senseless vandalism in our parks has got to stop,” commented Chair of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Councillor Julie Flaherty. “Many of our play parks have been heavily invested in and completely refurbished recently – yet these acts of destruction are causing unnecessary inconvenience to our communities, costing the ratepayer money and leaving our children without local play parks.

“Council investment has ensured that 43 of our 95 parks have been upgraded with inclusive features such as sensory equipment, wheelchair-accessible play items and communication boards. Some parks even have braille panels and quiet areas. The cost of damage to these isn’t just financial but causes emotional distress too.

“Unfortunately, a lot of this vandalism is caused by young people and anti-social behaviour, therefore during the summer months we would urge parents and carers to be aware of their children’s whereabouts. Know who they are with and tell them about the serious consequences of anti-social behaviour. If they are unsupervised, they may get into trouble whether acting intentionally or through association with others.”

The Council is encouraging local residents to help look after and protect these valued community spaces. The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has learned with shock about the brutal assassination of Mr Mpho Mafole, the City of Ekurhuleni’s group divisional head of corporate and forensic audits.

According to media reports, the 47-year-old was gunned down on Monday while driving along the R23 in Esselen Park. Police reportedly discovered Mr Mafole’s body inside his vehicle, riddled with gunshot wounds.

Mr Mafole, who was appointed to the position only three months ago, brought with him an impressive track record of public service, including 14 years in the Office of the Auditor-General of South Africa. He was tasked with uncovering financial irregularities and promoting transparency in the City of Ekurhuleni, one of the country’s largest municipalities.

Committee Chairperson Dr Zweli Mkhize said the nature of Mr Mafole’s work underscored the often-dangerous responsibilities undertaken by those at the forefront of rooting out corruption in our public institutions. “The committee condemns this cowardly and violent act as this not only threatens the lives of dedicated public servants but also seeks to intimidate and hinder efforts to build clean and accountable governance, particularly in our municipalities where systemic failures persist,” said the Chairperson.

Dr Mkhize said this tragedy is a stark reminder of the urgent need to strengthen the protection of whistleblowers and anti-corruption officials. “Reforms to safeguard those who speak out and act against corruption must urgently be expedited.” He said municipalities, and the rest of government, must uphold the highest standards of financial oversight and integrity.

The Chairperson also noted that this tragedy comes as the committee prepares for the start of extensive oversight visits across provinces to demand accountability from municipalities following the latest dismal municipal audit outcomes. “The committee will continue to exercise its oversight mandate, working with all spheres of government to ensure that those who risk their lives in service of public accountability are protected and that the rot that enables criminality is eradicated,” he said.

“The committee extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr Mafole’s family, colleagues, and loved ones during this difficult time. We urge law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly.”

MIL-OSI Security: Detectives appeal for information following serious assault in Hackney

Detectives investigating a serious assault in Hackney are appealing for witnesses to come forward, and have named a man they need to trace.

On Saturday, 28 June at 00:56hrs police were called to reports of a fight between two men in Lower Clapton Road, E5.

Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service who treated a 32-year-old man at the scene before transporting him to hospital. He remains in hospital with serious injuries that are believed to be life-changing.

After making enquiries and reviewing CCTV, detectives are keen to speak to Christopher Richards, 32 (08.08.1992) of South Ockendon, Thurrock, in relation to the assault.

Richards is known to have links to the Hackney area, as well as South Ockendon, Hammersmith and Fulham and Islington. He is of a medium, broad build and has dark brown hair.

Anyone who has information on Richards’ and his whereabouts, or anyone with further information that could help the investigation, is urged to contact police on 101 quoting CAD 409/28JUN25.

MIL-OSI Security: Second person charged following fatal shooting in Enfield

A second person has been charged following the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Keanu Harker in Enfield.

Eliezer Mbaki, 24 (8.7.00), of Oulton Road, Tottenham, was arrested on Monday, 30 June. He was charged on Tuesday, 1 July with perverting the course of justice.

He was remanded to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 2 July.

After receiving reports that gunshots had been heard on Thursday, 26 June, Met officers attended Great Cambridge Road, Enfield alongside the London Ambulance Service.

An arrival the victim, Keanu Harker, was treated before being taken to a nearby hospital.

Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he later died from his injuries.

His family continue to be supported by specialist officers.

A 17-year-old – who cannot be named for legal reasons – was also arrested on Sunday, 29 July, in connection with the shooting.

He appeared before Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 1 July, charged with murder. He will next appear at the Old Bailey on Thursday, 3 July.

Several lines of enquiry remain active.

Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has voiced her support for the graduation and employment of 20 new peace officers (POs) in the Bergrivier Municipality.

According to the provincial department, the recruitment and training of these officers is part of a five-year strategic plan aimed at strengthening local law enforcement across municipalities in the province.

This initiative is designed to create a safer Western Cape for everyone.

In collaboration with the City of Cape Town’s accredited Public Training College, the graduates completed a 30-day programme accredited by the Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA).

Upon finishing the course, the officers received formal certification to serve as both peace officers and traffic wardens.

Addressing the graduates during the ceremony, Marais reminded them that their role extends beyond merely enforcing the law.

“You are here not only to maintain order but also to build trust, foster relationships, and help create safer, more connected communities, where residents can live and move freely,“ she said.

Marais encouraged them to serve with honour, courage and distinction.

The MEC believes that the training and certification these young peace officers have received not only enhances their employability but also opens doors to future careers in law enforcement and public safety.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) e-recruitment site is continuing to receive large volumes of applications for the Basic Police Learning Development Programme (BPLDP).

The site, https://erecruitment.saps.gov.za/, was officially launched on Monday.

In the first 24 hours, SAPS received in excess of 67 774 applications from various parts of the country.

“SAPS is aware that the website is experiencing a delayed response due to traffic volumes. The Technology Management Services (TMS), inclusive of IT experts, is continuously monitoring the influx of applications.

“Applicants are advised to be patient and to continue refreshing the careers page,” SAPS said in a statement.

The closing date for applications for the Basic Police Learning Development Programme is 18 July 2025.

His Majesty The King, on the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor, has approved the reappointment – for 5 years from 1 March 2026 – of Douglas Marshall as Judicial Appointments and Conduct Ombudsman.

The reappointment of the Judicial Appointments and Conduct Ombudsman is regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments and has been made under Paragraph 1 of Schedule 13 of the Constitutional Reform Act 2005.

Biography

Douglas Marshall is Pathways to Impact Manager at Childlight; Global Child Safety Institute based in Edinburgh, working to combat the global pandemic of child abuse. His previous career included 30 years’ service with Cumbria Constabulary retiring as a senior detective. At the latter end of his service, he was the Deputy National Co-ordinator on Operation Hydrant (the national policing response, oversight, and co-ordination of non-recent child sexual abuse). He returned to Cumbria Constabulary completing five years as a Police Staff Senior Investigating Officer. During his police service he was Senior Investigating Officer on several high-profile cases in Cumbria. He is formerly a director of a private investigation company in Scotland and has a consultancy for investigations.

People from various sections of society, including members of civil society, traders, and residents of Anantnag and Kulgam districts, gathered with garlands and placards to greet the Yatris.

Earlier in the day, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch of pilgrims from the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu. According to officials, a total of 5,892 pilgrims left Jammu for the Valley on Wednesday. Of these, 3,403 are bound for the Nunwan base camp at Pahalgam, while 2,489 are heading to Baltal.

This year’s Yatra is being held under tight security arrangements, with an additional 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces deployed following the April Pahalgam terror attack.

The 36-day pilgrimage will formally commence on Thursday and conclude on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.

Pilgrims undertake the journey to the holy cave shrine located at an altitude of 3,888 metres either through the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route. The Pahalgam route involves a 46-kilometre trek over four days, while those opting for the Baltal route complete a 14-kilometre trek and return the same day.

This year, no helicopter services are available for security reasons.

The cave shrine houses the naturally formed ice Shivling, believed by devotees to symbolise the mystical powers of Lord Shiva.

MIL-OSI Security: NATO and Ukraine agree to exchange Military Police training expertise

On 20 June 2025, NATO agreed to recognise the 25th Military Police Training Centre (MPTC) in Lviv, Ukraine as a NATO Partnership Training and Education Centre (PTEC).

PTECs form a global network of institutions offering courses and academic seminars to civilian and military staff from NATO Allied and partner countries. Their goal is to improve the professionalism of national personnel, increase the ability of military personnel to operate well together, and conduct education and training activities carried out within the framework of NATO partnership programmes and policies. Since the PTEC community was launched in 1999, Ukraine has been an active member, thanks to the participation of its International Peacekeeping and Security Centre (IPSC).

Despite the many challenges posed by Russia’s war against Ukraine, the 25th MPTC draws lessons learned from combat experience to refine courses and explore new training opportunities. It actively collaborates with the NATO Military Police community of interest and the NATO Military Police Centre of Excellence, based in Bydgoszcz, Poland, to develop high-quality courses. This helps to strengthen training initiatives in the discipline of Military Policing.

Cooperation with NATO will also be enhanced through the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC), also based in Bydgoszcz. The 25th MPTC will create synergies with the JATEC and add value by identifying and applying lessons learned from Russia’s war of aggression. Cooperation between NATO and Ukraine is characterised by the common objective of increasing interoperability. Ukrainian officials have highlighted that they see NATO as the right platform for their defence institutions to share their unique and state-of-the-art capabilities with Allies and like-minded partners.

Centres wishing to join the PTEC network must undergo thorough evaluation. Evaluation of the 25th MPTC in March by experts from NATO Headquarters, Allied Command Operations and other NATO and Allied entities was, exceptionally, conducted in Bydgoszcz due to Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine. Representatives of the centre and NATO experts used the facilities of the NATO Military Police Centre of Excellence. NATO experts concluded that the centre demonstrated high expertise, professionalism and familiarity with NATO standards. The MPTC in Lviv, Ukraine is now the 36th member of the network of Partnership Training and Education Centres.

MIL-OSI Africa: No fear or favour as Hawks swoop down on their own members

Four police officials attached to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Gauteng and Gauteng Provincial SAPS have been arrested alongside two civilians for charges including fraud and corruption.

All six suspects are expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today, where they are facing charges of theft, possession of suspected stolen money, extortion and corruption.

The arrests was effected by members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) team based in Johannesburg.

On Monday afternoon, the complainant in the matter alleged that he had received a phone call from one of his employees informing him that police officers were at the complainant’s shop. It is further reported that the complainant instructed his employee to request the police to wait until he arrived at the shop.

However, shortly after the conversation between the complainant and his employee, the call was disconnected. The complainant then made his way to the shop and upon his arrival, the shop was closed.

He then proceeded to Johannesburg Central Police Station, where he was informed that his employees were arrested for Contravention of Section 9 of the Currency Act, Act 9 of 1933. The employee that he was in conversation with was also arrested for interfering with police duties.

The arrest of the four police officials and two civilians came after the complainant reported the matter to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation. He alleged that the police officials took R900 000 from his shop while conducting their operations.

When following up on the information, the Hawks discovered that only 60 000 US dollars and R130 000 was booked into the South African Police Service (SAPS) register as the amount recovered by the police, instead of booking the entire amount of R900 000.

It is further alleged that the suspect, who was at the shop to exchange the money in question, also tried to entice the police officials with R60 000, which was also booked in the SAPS register.

After conducting a preliminary investigation, the Hawks’ SCI followed up the information and proceeded to Newtown, where they located the police officials involved in the theft.

The alleged corrupt officials were found in several vehicles. The Hawks searched the vehicles and found one of them with a substantial amount of cash. As a result, the four police officials and two civilians were arrested on the scene.

Meanwhile, the other six suspects, who are charged for contravention of Section 9 of the Currency Act, will also appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today.

”The Hawks remain resolute in their commitment to uproot corruption, even within the ranks of law enforcement. No one is above the law.

“The arrest of these officers is a clear demonstration that we will act decisively and without fear or favour to protect the integrity of the criminal justice system and restore public trust in the SAPS,” said the Acting National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant General Siphosihle Nkosi. – SAnews.gov.za

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has welcomed the judgment by the Pietermaritzburg High Court which found Sabelo Phewa guilty of murdering the late Richmond Local Municipality Manager, Sibusiso Sithole.

Sentencing is expected to take place on 31 July 2025, at the Durban High Court.

Sithole was shot and killed at the Richmond licensing office in 2017 while on his way to attend a meeting with the then council to discuss issues he was investigating, which included fraud and corruption involving tenders and kickbacks in the municipality.

The SAPS Political Killings task team took over investigations in 2018 and this led to the arrest of Phewa.

“The firearm found in his possession at the time of his arrest was found to be linked to several other murders, including that of Amos Ngcobo, whose wife had ordered the hit. The wife turned State witness and was sentenced to five years imprisonment,” SAPS said in a statement.

MIL-OSI Europe: NRRP: payment request for eighth instalment, equal to EUR 12.8 billion, sent to European Commission

The payment request for the eighth instalment of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), equal to EUR 12.8 billion, was sent to the European Commission today.

The request was submitted following the NRRP steering committee meeting held on 24 June, which verified the achievement of the 40 required objectives (28 targets and 12 milestones), including reforms and investments that are strategic for Italy’s economic and social growth. With the payment request for the eighth instalment, Italy has consolidated its leading position in Europe in terms of implementation of its NRRP, which will enable it to exceed EUR 153 billion over the coming months, corresponding to approximately 79% of the Plan’s total resources.

The measures implemented as part of the eighth instalment include: digitalisation of the Guardia di Finanza [Italian Finance Police], with innovative IT systems to fight economic crime; more than 1,000 language and methodology courses for school teachers; the launch of projects to update school curricula in over 8,000 schools and guide students towards STEM skills; implementation of culture and tourism enhancement projects by supporting approximately 2,000 small and medium-sized enterprises; redevelopment of around 50 historical parks and gardens. Furthermore, 1,400 km of rail infrastructure have been equipped with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS); an advanced and integrated monitoring and forecasting system has been created to identify hydrogeological risks in Italy’s southern regions; marine habitat protection and coastal observation work has been carried out; improvements to the energy efficiency of public housing have been planned; with regard to universities, 5,000 research projects of national interest have been funded, approximately 2,300 new researchers have been hired, more than 550 research grants have been allocated, and financing has been provided for research programmes and projects on rare and severely debilitating diseases.

In addition to these investments, there are also important reforms to boost the economic competitiveness of companies, including the reform to reduce payment delays by central and local government authorities, regional authorities, autonomous provinces and national health service bodies, and the reform to launch simplification and streamlining for business incentives.

In line with the previous payment requests, the eighth instalment will be disbursed upon completion of the standard assessment process provided for by European procedures, the aim of which is to verify that all required milestones and targets have been met.

Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha announced on Wednesday that over 4,000 devotees have begun their journey from Jammu for the Amarnath Yatra. He flagged off the first group of pilgrims from Jammu.

““More than four thousand devotees of Lord Bhole Nath have set out today in the first batch for Baba Barfani’s darshan,” said L-G Sinha.

With chants of “Bam Bam Bhole” ringing through the air, the spiritual journey to the sacred Amarnath cave has officially begun.

Pilgrims gathered in large numbers at the base camp, filled with emotion and enthusiasm.

“Everything feels great, and I am very happy to be going with the first batch. There is no fear or worry because we have our Army and our leaders with us,” said one devotee.

Another added, “There is great excitement among the first batch of pilgrims, and I want to tell all devotees to come at least once for darshan of Baba Amarnath.”

The annual pilgrimage, a major spiritual event in the Hindu calendar, will see lakhs of devotees trek to the high-altitude cave shrine in the Himalayas over the coming weeks. This year’s yatra began with heightened preparations by the administration, ensuring a safe and seamless journey for all participants.

L-G Sinha commended the efforts of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, the administration, and the security forces. “The Jammu and Kashmir administration, local residents, and the Shrine Board have made excellent arrangements for the Yatra. Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces have ensured strict security measures,” he said.

Along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, particularly near Ramban, security has been ramped up. The area has seen the deployment of additional forces, surveillance systems, and checkpoints. Only verified vehicles are being allowed to pass through key points to ensure the safety of pilgrims.

Meanwhile, facilities including medical aid, sanitation, food distribution, and emergency response systems have been arranged along the route. The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board has worked closely with multiple agencies to monitor crowd flow and weather patterns, ensuring the safety and comfort of pilgrims throughout the yatra.

The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested two 14-year-old males after a police vehicle ramming incident occurred in Alice Springs yesterday.

Around 5:40am on Tuesday 1 July, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report that a red Mahindra station wagon had been stolen from a residence in Teatree Court in Sadadeen. The victim reported seeing two unknown persons inside the vehicle leaving the area.

At 6am, police CCTV operators observed the vehicle at a service station on Railway Terrace. Two police vehicles responded and sighted one offender running from the scene on foot, and the second offender entering the stolen vehicle. The driver reversed at speed and rammed into the front of one of the police vehicles, before fleeing the area.

No police member was injured as a result of the incident, however the police vehicle sustained substantial damage.

The 14-year-old passenger was arrested nearby after a short foot chase.

Earlier today, the 14-year-old driver was also arrested and the stolen motor vehicle was recovered by police.

Commander Mark Grieve said, “This incident highlights the dangers that our members face every day while responding to violent behaviour.

“It is appalling behaviour, and police do not deserve to be targeted while executing their duty of serving and protecting the community.

“This could have easily resulted in serious injury or death, and I commend the officers for acting safely and professionally under challenging circumstances.”

A driver has been charged following a hit and run crash at Gawler on 26 June.

Just before 7pm on Thursday 26 June, emergency services responded to reports a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle on Thirteenth Street, Gawler South.

The pedestrian, a 52-year-old local woman, sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

This morning, Wednesday 2 July, a 56-year-old woman from Gawler attended at Gawler Police Station where she was arrested by Major Crash Investigators.

She has been charged with careless driving cause serious harm, leave scene of serious crash having caused harm.

She has been bailed to appear at Elizabeth Magistrates Court 13 August.

Investigators attended a Gawler address where the vehicle involved was located and seized for forensic examination.

Progress on Strathnairn School

Construction is well underway on what will be the ACT’s 93^rd public school.

The new Strathnairn School will be co-located with an early childhood education and care (ECEC) service.

It will cater for:
- 780 students from preschool to year 6
- 130 ECEC places.
The school’s foundation principal, Nicole Nicholson, and other executive staff have been announced.

When will the school open?

Strathnairn School will open in stages.
- It will open for students in preschool to year 2 at the start of 2026.
- It is expected students from all year levels will be able to attend in 2027.
This will offer families in the Ginninderry region high-quality public education close to home.

The planned School Priority Enrolment Area (PEA) for the new school includes:
- Strathnairn
- Macnamara

Hawker Primary School upgrades

Hawker Primary School students and staff are benefitting from recent upgrades.

The school has welcomed new accessible car parking bays. There is also now a ramp leading to its entrance.

The front office has had a makeover with:
- a new two-door entrance
- new furniture
- LED lighting
- upgrades to the sick bay and nearby toilet.
The school now has a new printer facility room. Upgrades to the boardroom and principal’s office are also complete.

This work has been completed as part of the ACT Government’s Asset Renewal Program.

Following decades of heartache, the family of Melissa Trussell (Brown) have joined police in a renewed call for information regarding the historic disappearance of the 15-year-old, and unsolved murder of her mother, Rosemary.

Rosemary Brown, 33, along with her daughter Melissa, were last seen leaving their Blair Athol home at about 2.30am on Saturday 13 May, 2000.

Today marks exactly 25 years since Rosemary’s body was discovered in the mangroves at Garden Island on 2 July 2000. Melissa’s remains have never been found.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke, Officer in Charge of Major Crime Investigation Branch urged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.

“This is a particularly disturbing case. A mother was murdered and her body disposed of. We believe Melissa was also murdered,” he said.

“It’s tragic for the family of Rosemary and Melissa to experience this long passage of time with no answers about what happened to their loved ones.

“I have no doubt that numerous people either know what happened to Rosemary and Melissa or have information that will assist the investigation into their suspected murder.

“We appeal to them to contact police and provide that information.”

South Australia Police (SAPOL) investigators have today released additional childhood photos of Melissa as part of a renewed public plea for information.

Recently visiting their last believed location – Stirling Street, Northfield – Melissa’s father Barry and half-sister Kayla reminisced on childhood memories regarding Melissa, while expressing their desire for closure.

Describing Melissa as her “best friend”, Kayla hoped to one day give her the farewell she deserves.

“We need to know where she is and what happened to her,” she pleaded.

“We want to see the person or people who have caused our pain brought to justice.”

Barry echoed Kayla’s appeal for answers 25 years on.

“My message to the people responsible, because I don’t believe it to be just one person: it’s better to come forward now with information,” he said.

“A parent shouldn’t outlive their child… and for a long time (Melissa’s disappearance) has messed me up.

“I’m hoping some fresh information will finally come to light to help police solve the case.”

The Water Corporation will soon begin works on Gnangara Road to construct over 14 kilometres of new wastewater pipeline from Ellenbrook to Wangara.
These essential works will enhance wastewater services for the City of Wanneroo and are a key step in securing Western Australia’s water future.

To carry out these works safely, traffic will be disrupted on Gnangara Road and several road closures are proposed on nearby streets. These closures will help maintain a safe working environment for construction crews while ensuring continued access for local residents.

Road closures and traffic disruptions will include:
- One lane will be closed on Gnangara Road, between Alexander Drive and Priest Road, from Monday 30 June. Access will be maintained via a new temporary lane.
- Priest Road (southbound only) will be closed from Monday 30 June to Monday 22 September 2025, with detour via Coverwood Promenade and Huntingdon Parkway.
- Huntington Parkway will be closed from Monday 30 June to Monday 22 September 2025, with a detour via Coverwood Promenade.
- Coverwood Promenade is proposed to be closed from Monday 29 September to Friday 28 November 2025, with a detour via Huntington Parkway.

Taskforce Respect helps achieve reduction in Glenorchy crime

Six weeks on from the launch of Taskforce Respect to target anti-social behaviour and retail crime in Glenorchy, police are expanding operations to identify and recover stolen property.
It comes as new data from Tasmania Police shows a 16 per cent fall in total offences in the Glenorchy division for the past 12 months, including a reduction in youth offending.
Members from Taskforce Respect recently executed two search warrants in the Glenorchy area, with thousands of dollars in stolen property recovered.
Police also seized a quantity of methylamphetamine, two gel blaster firearms, a laser pointer and an extendable baton, among other items.
Glenorchy Police Inspector Jason Klug said Taskforce Respect – with its focus on high visibility policing and community engagement through foot patrols – had made a positive impact in the city’s CBD and retail areas.
This is supported by Tasmania Police data to the end of the financial year which shows total offences in the Glenorchy division are down.
There were 4578 total offences in the 2023-24 financial year, compared with 3848 total offences in the 2024-25 financial year.*
Youth offences in 2023-24 were 928 and fell to 731 in 2024-25, a reduction of 21 per cent.
There were 135 public place assaults in 2023-24 compared with 124 public place assaults in 2024-25, a reduction of 8 per cent.

Community and business members have reported a reduction in anti-social behaviour and retail crime, Inspector Klug said.
Multiple charges of stealing, unlawful possession of property, minor drug offences and people carrying a dangerous article in a public place have been brought against alleged offenders.
While conducting foot patrols in the Glenorchy CBD in the past week, members of Taskforce Respect issued nine formal directions to people committing offences or displaying anti-social behaviour.
“The initial phase of our taskforce was high visibility interactions with all members of the community, including those that offend,” Inspector Klug said.
“The intent was to increase a feeling of safety in our public spaces while holding offenders, and recidivist offenders in particular, to account. The taskforce is now evolving to include searches to locate stolen property items and charge those people who may receive these items after they have been stolen.”
In its first month of operation, Taskforce Respect issued 35 formal directions for people to leave popular public areas because they were either committing offences or displaying anti-social behaviours.
The taskforce would like to thank the local community for their positive comments and assistance in reporting matters to police.
“We receive many favourable comments and correspondence noting the community’s appreciation. We encourage the community to approach our members and say hello,” Inspector Klug said.

Over the past month, CFA members have helped save more than 1000 lives, not on the fireground but from the donor chair.

Since 1 June volunteers from across the state have been busy rolling up their sleeves as part of Lifeblood’s Emergency Services Blood Drive, with each donation capable of saving up to three lives.

The drive, which runs from June to August, sees CFA compete alongside other emergency services nationwide in a friendly challenge to donate blood and plasma for patients in need.

So far, Ringwood has emerged as the most frequented donor location and O-positive the most donated blood type, making up 37 per cent of all CFA donations.

The milestone comes at a crucial time, with O-negative and O-positive supplies currently at their lowest levels since 2023.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan congratulated members for their ongoing contribution to the cause.

“CFA volunteers don’t just serve their communities during emergencies, they also show up in important ways like this,” Jason said.

“Every blood or plasma donation can help save multiple lives, so we encourage our members continue to make a meaningful difference by donating to Lifeblood.”

Among CFA’s most committed donors is Creswick Fire Brigade member Phil Greenbank, who recently made his 650th donation.

“I started donating with my dad in 1984 after he took part in a blood drive with his local football umpiring group,” Phil said.

“It became something we did together for years, and I’ve just kept going ever since.”

Phil has donated whole blood, plasma and platelets, and has also been a bone marrow donor once helping save the life of a young man who went on to celebrate his 21st birthday after a successful transplant.

“If I’m in a position to help someone, I see it as a privilege to do so,” he said.

“It’s an easy way to make a difference and I’d absolutely encourage others to give it a go.”

Phil also reminded CFA members to ensure they’re registered as part of the CFA team when donating, so their contributions count toward the organisation’s tally.

“We’ve been beaten by Victoria Police the last few years, we’re behind again now but there’s still two months to go,” Phil said.

“Let’s see if we can reclaim top spot for CFA”.

MIL-OSI Australia: Reconciliation Australia endorses City’s new Reconciliation Action Plan

Reconciliation Australia has endorsed the City’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2025-2027.

The Innovate RAP details the City’s commitment to continuously working towards improving relationships, opportunities and respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.

Mayor Linda Aitken said the RAP outlined the practical actions the City would take to advance reconciliation.

“I’m incredibly proud of how far the City has come since our reconciliation journey began 15 years ago with the development of our inaugural RAP 2012-2014,” she said.

“Over the next two years the City aims to maintain our current actions, while placing a greater emphasis on strengthening relationships, fostering cultural strength and healing, promoting Noongar language in the community and further increasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business opportunities.

“I would like to sincerely thank the City’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Reference Group, Ni Kadadjiny Koort, and the internal RAP Working Group for their ongoing support, commitment and collaboration, which has helped bring this Plan to fruition.”

Reconciliation Australia Chief Executive Officer, Karen Mundine, commended the City on its fourth Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan.

“The RAP program’s emphasis on relationships, respect and opportunities gives organisations a framework from which to foster connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples rooted in mutual collaboration and trust,” she said.

“This Innovate RAP is an opportunity for the City of Wanneroo to strengthen these relationships, gain crucial experience and nurture connections that will become the lifeblood of its future RAP commitments.”

The Reconciliation Action Plan 2025-2027 has been designed featuring artwork from local Aboriginal artists and is available to read at wanneroo.wa.gov.au/reconciliation.

Police is continuing the investigation launched following the discovery of human remains in Freeman’s Bay overnight.

Further information is being released in the early stage of the investigation.

“Sadly, I can confirm the deceased is a newborn baby, and they were discovered in a wheelie bin outside an address,” Detective Inspector Scott Beard, of Auckland City CIB, says.

“A woman is in custody and Police are speaking with her to establish the circumstances around what has occurred.”

Police is not looking for anyone else in connection with the matter.

“This is a tragedy for everyone concerned and there is a person’s wellbeing to consider here alongside the investigation, so we will ensure the woman gets the support she needs.

“Police acknowledge this will understandably be quite confronting information for the community to grapple with.”

A post-mortem is ongoing today to determine the next steps in the investigation.

“The result is not yet known, and Police will provide further updates as the investigation allows,” Detective Inspector Beard says.

“We would ask the public to avoid speculation given what has occurred and allow investigators to carry out their work.”

Police will be carrying out an area canvass as part of the investigation.

“We will be seeking CCTV from residents in the street and also searching other wheelie bins in order to secure any additional evidence that may be relevant to the investigation.”

Twelve people have been arrested and charged in the wake of the King’s Birthday weekend anti-social road user gathering in Levin that saw police officers and members of the public injured, fireworks lit, and police vehicles damaged.

Since the 30 May event where a crowd of 1000 people gathered and participated in skids, burnouts, and other driving offences, Police have worked tirelessly to gather evidence from the night.

This includes reviewing the footage filmed by officers on the ground and the Police Eagle helicopter at the time, taking witness statements, and going over information provided by the public, alongside sourcing and reviewing relevant CCTV and any footage posted online on social media.

Inspector Ross Grantham, Manawatū Area Commander, says the level of violence and reckless behaviour shown at the gathering was dangerous and stupid.

“While Police were in attendance, the crowd became aggressive and riotous, with fireworks, physical aggression, and a vehicle all being used against officers. Multiple police vehicles were damaged, and two police officers received minor injuries from the fireworks.”

Five members of the public were also injured, including a woman who was knocked unconscious and left on the ground while people filmed her. The crowd refused to move for an ambulance, with Police having to deploy tactical options in order for emergency services to reach her.

As the event unfolded, 10 people were arrested for disorderly behaviour and driving-related charges. They are before the courts.

“It is sheer luck that there were not more serious injuries, or even death, that night,” Inspector Grantham says.

As a result of the last month’s work, Police have arrested and charged 12 people, in addition to the 10 people arrested on the night.

“These 22 total arrests are an amazing result for our community and we expect there will be further arrests and charges in the future,” Inspector Grantham says.

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers says those participating in this type of despicable behaviour should expect to hear Police knocking on their front door.

“The kind of behaviour we saw that night is completely unacceptable, and it puts participants, bystanders, and my colleagues in danger.

“Thankfully two officers only received minor injuries, however the situation could have been a lot worse.”

The range of charges include possession of offensive weapon, arson, failing to stop to ascertain injury, failing to stop for Police, sustained loss of traction, driving in a dangerous manner, driving while disqualified, unlawful assembly, unlawfully in an enclosed yard, and excess breath alcohol level.

Seven men aged 18–29, and two women aged 18 and 51 are due to appear in Levin District Court on Wednesday 2, Wednesday 9, and Wednesday 16 July.

Three youth are due to appear in Levin Youth Court at a later date.

Hawke’s Bay Police are appealing to the public to report any suspicious activity around railway crossings and bridges in their community, after hundreds of metres of copper was stolen in just a week.

Senior Constable Pehi Potaka says in the week beginning 23 June, more than 750 metres of copper cable was stolen from the railway bridge north of Clive, along with four level crossing bells being stolen from railway crossings between 12 April and 12 May.

“It is extremely concerning and a huge public safety risk,” he says.

“Railway core cables are responsible for transmitting power and signals to trains, which is crucial to keeping the rail systems operating safely and efficiently.

“Crossing bells are an essential part of public safety and play a huge role in warning people that a train is approaching. The removal of these bells has the potential to cause fatal accidents,” says Senior Constable Potaka.

Police take public safety very seriously and would like to remind offenders that not only are you putting your community at risk when stealing these essential railway safety tools, but cutting any electrical wires comes with risk – including to yourself.

Police are also reminding scrap metal yards that we will be taking a hard line with anyone found to be receiving the bells or other stolen copper or metal.

If anyone sees someone acting suspiciously around railways, they are asked to ring 111 immediately if it is happening now, or 105 if it is after the fact.

We also encourage anyone who sees anything at railway crossings and bridges that they are concerned about, such as wires that have been noticeably cut or bells missing, to contact Police immediately.

MIL-OSI New Zealand: Fatal crash, Tauranga

Police can confirm one person has died following a crash on Tauranga Eastern Link/State Highway 2 on Thursday 26 June.

The two-vehicle crash was reported to Police just before 10am.

The deceased is 34-year-old Lily Arabin, from Te Puke.

She died in hospital as a result of her injuries later that day.

Our thoughts are with those close to her at this difficult time.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
