    HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani participated on Monday in the plenary session of the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, held in the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York.

    In Qatar’s statement to the plenary session, His Excellency said that this conference is being held at a critical moment for the region amid a horrific war waged by Israel on the Gaza Strip for two years and a worsening humanitarian tragedy affecting more than two million people, most of whom are women and children.

    In one of the most brutal and heartbreaking moments of this tragedy, we witnessed scenes that are a disgrace to all of humanity – hungry civilians, who are exhausted by the blockade, and who get killed while standing in line waiting for a loaf of bread, a bag of flour, or a meal to feed their children, His Excellency noted.

    He wondered: What future can be built on the bodies of the starving? And what peace can emerge in the midst of such hunger, humiliation, and killing?

    HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs explained that, in the face of this catastrophic situation, the State of Qatar has not hesitated to exert all its diplomatic efforts to stop the bloodshed of innocents, alleviate their suffering, and release prisoners and detainees.

    He said that the State of Qatar, based on its firm position, condemns all forms of targeting civilians. It categorically rejects double standards. A human being is a human being, and a child is a child. None of us has the right to discriminate between innocents and their right to life on political or other grounds. The situation has reached the point of normalizing the use of starvation and targeting hospitals as a method of war, setting precedents that we cannot accept, otherwise it will become a normal practice in every conflict from now on.

    His Excellency reiterated the State of Qatar’s categorical rejection of the use of food as a tool of pressure or a weapon in conflicts, and its condemnation in the strongest terms of the blockade and forced displacement policies practiced against innocent civilians, as well as the repeated targeting of hospitals, displacement centers, and vital facilities, in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

    His Excellency noted that the mediation efforts undertaken by the State of Qatar, in partnership with the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United States of America, have yielded tangible results, represented by the entry of large quantities of aid and the release of hundreds of prisoners and detainees on both sides.

    HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs affirmed that, despite reoccurring obstacles and attempts to undermine the humanitarian track, efforts are ongoing to reach an immediate ceasefire, setting the stage to ending the crisis and launching recovery and reconstruction efforts. He stressed that this requires all parties to act responsibly and support mediation efforts.

    His Excellency noted that the war against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip has not only caused unprecedented suffering for innocent civilians but has also undermined the credibility of international law and the universal values upon which the international community institutions were founded after World War II.

    He added that it has also become clear that policies of force have failed and will continue to fail in eliminating the Palestinian cause.

    All they have achieved is to worsen the situation with more tragedy, bitterness, a sense of injustice, and horrific scenes of death and destruction that will remain etched in the memory of people around the world, His Excellency continued.

    The horrors of this war and its political failure prove that there is no alternative to a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian cause, he said, adding that the key lies in acknowledging the historical injustice suffered by the Palestinian people and applying long-overdue justice, delayed for nearly eighty years.

    The State of Qatar, based on its unwavering support for peace, affirms its full support for the objectives of this conference and its keenness to play an active role in ensuring its success and enhancing the chances of a peaceful solution in the Middle East, His Excellency said, noting that the State of Qatar co-chaired the conference’s third working group, which is concerned with the topic of “Narratives of Peace.”

    His Excellency explained that this team addressed important topics and concluded with priority principles and proposals that contribute to the success of the conference’s overall objective. In order to create a conducive environment for achieving sustainable peace, there is a need to promote positive narratives that support peace between the two sides, based on rejecting violence, renouncing inflammatory rhetoric, and confronting attempts to dehumanize the other side, he added.

    HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the State of Qatar’s steadfast position in support of a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian cause, in accordance with international law, UN resolutions, and the two-state solution, being the only viable option to end the conflict and achieve a comprehensive and just peace.

    He added that from this standpoint, Qatar calls for a clear and unified international stance that opposes all practices that obstruct negotiations and the chances of achieving a just and lasting peace. In this context, His Excellency welcomed the recognition of the State of Palestine within the borders of June 4, 1967, encompassing the West Bank and Gaza Strip by several countries, describing such recognition as a crucial step toward achieving both regional and international peace and stability.

    His Excellency also reiterated the State of Qatar’s welcome of the French Republic’s commitment to recognize the State of Palestine this coming September.

    JERUSALEM, July 29 (Xinhua) — Two prominent Israeli human rights organizations, B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights in Israel (PHRI), on Monday released separate reports claiming for the first time that Israel is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

    B’Tselem’s report says Israel’s military offensive on Gaza, which has lasted more than 21 months, has been accompanied by mass killings, both directly and by creating uninhabitable conditions.

    This is compounded by mass arrests and abuse of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, which have effectively become torture camps, the report says, adding that Israel is also responsible for the destruction of Gaza’s social fabric, including the destruction of Palestinian educational and cultural institutions.

    The report said it concluded that Israel was committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

    A second report by PHRI says there is a “deliberate and gradual dismantling of Gaza’s health system and with it the population’s ability to survive.” It says this amounts to genocide.

    The document also says that since October 2023, Israel has attacked 33 of 36 hospitals and clinics in the Gaza Strip, depriving them of fuel and water.

    Dozens of people are reported to be dying every day from malnutrition. At least 85 children have died from starvation, and 92 percent of infants aged six months to two years are not receiving adequate nutrition.

    The report says Israel has displaced nine out of every 10 Gazans, destroyed or damaged 92 percent of homes and left more than half a million children without schools or stability.

    Both organizations called on the international community to stop Israel’s offensive to prevent further loss of life in Gaza.

    Israeli government spokesman David Menser on Monday rejected accusations of genocide as baseless, saying Israel had sent 1.9 million tons of humanitarian aid, mostly food, to Gaza.

    UNITED NATIONS, July 28 (Xinhua) — The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said on Monday that the interim authorities in Syria must act in a professional and disciplined manner.

    “A sovereign Syria must ultimately have a monopoly on the legitimate use of force and operate within the rule of law,” he told the UN Security Council.

    Mr. Pedersen expressed concern about credible reports of widespread violations in As-Suwayda, including summary executions and arbitrary killings, kidnappings, destruction of private property and looting of homes. He noted that the alleged perpetrators included members of the Syrian security forces and individuals associated with the interim authorities.

    “Religious incitement and offensive behaviour, particularly during security operations, are simply unforgivable. The state has a responsibility to act professionally and with discipline, even when under attack. It must take control of its forces and ensure clear accountability – the key to rebuilding trust, strengthening security and promoting unity,” he said.

    Syrians must feel that the state and its forces exist only to protect them, according to the stated policy of the interim president, Pedersen said, adding that “the gap between this policy and the reality on the ground must be closed.”

    Loyalty to the state “must be earned through a genuine process that builds a representative state, protects the rights of all and accepts all sections of society as equals,” he added.

    Speaking about the inclusiveness of the political transition, Pedersen said that “many Syrians express concerns about the centralization of power, limited transparency, weak checks and balances, and insufficient means for genuine public consultation, participation and oversight,” warning of the risk of “deepening feelings of alienation and undermining faith in the transition process.”

    The UN envoy said the formation of the People’s Council was a crucial step in the political transition and was expected to take place in September.

    “It is absolutely essential that all major Syrian groups and components are fully involved in the elections as voters and candidates,” Pedersen said, referring to the importance of women’s participation in the process.

    The UN envoy said the world body “stands ready to do everything we can to help, working with the interim authorities and all Syrians,” adding that “the political transition in Syria simply cannot fail.” –0–

  • Trump says many are starving in Gaza, vows to set up food centres

    U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday many people were starving in Gaza and suggested Israel could do more on humanitarian access, as Palestinians struggled to feed their children a day after Israel declared steps to improve supplies.

    As the death toll from two years of war in Gaza nears 60,000, a growing number of people are dying from starvation and malnutrition, Gaza health authorities say, with images of starving children shocking the world and fuelling international criticism of Israel over sharply worsening conditions.

    Describing starvation in Gaza as real, Trump’s assessment put him at odds with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said on Sunday “there is no starvation in Gaza” and vowed to fight on against the Palestinian militant group Hamas – a statement he reposted on X on Monday.

    However, Netanyahu later on Monday described the situation in Gaza as “difficult”, saying his country was working to ensure aid delivery to the besieged strip.

    “Israel will continue to work with international agencies as well as the U.S. and European nations to ensure that large amounts of humanitarian aid flows into the Gaza Strip,” Netanyahu said, according to a statement from his office.

    Trump, speaking during a visit to Scotland, said Israel has a lot of responsibility for aid flows, and that a lot of people could be saved. “You have a lot of starving people,” he said.

    “We’re going to set up food centres,” with no fences or boundaries to ease access, Trump said. The U.S. would work with other countries to provide more humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, including food and sanitation, he said.

    A White House spokesperson said additional details on the food centres would be “forthcoming.”

    ‘WHEN YOU GO TO BED HUNGRY, YOU WAKE UP HUNGRY’

    On Monday, the Gaza health ministry said at least 14 people had died in the past 24 hours of starvation and malnutrition, bringing the war’s death toll from hunger to 147, including 88 children, most in just the last few weeks.

    Israel announced several measures over the weekend, including daily humanitarian pauses to fighting in three areas of Gaza, new safe corridors for aid convoys, and airdrops. The decision followed the collapse of ceasefire talks on Friday.

    Wessal Nabil from Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza described the struggle of trying to feed her three children. “When you go to bed hungry, you wake up hungry. We distract them with anything … to make them calm down,” she told Reuters.

    “I call on the world, on those with merciful hearts, the compassionate, to look at us with compassion, to be kind to us, to stand with us until aid comes in and ensure it reaches us.”

    Two Israeli defence officials said the international pressure prompted the new Israeli measures, as did the worsening conditions on the ground.

    U.N. agencies said a long-term and steady supply of aid was needed. The World Food Programme said 60 trucks of aid had been dispatched – short of target. Almost 470,000 people in Gaza are enduring famine-like conditions, with 90,000 women and children in need of specialist nutrition treatments, it said.

    “Our target at the moment, every day is to get 100 trucks into Gaza,” WFP Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe, Samer AbdelJaber, told Reuters.

    Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council, told Reuters the situation is catastrophic.

    “At this time, children are dying every single day from starvation, from preventable disease. So time has run out.”

    Netanyahu has denied any policy of starvation towards Gaza, saying aid supplies would be kept up whether Israel was negotiating a ceasefire or fighting.

    A spokesperson for COGAT, the Israeli military aid coordination agency, said Israel had not placed a time limit on the humanitarian pauses in its military operation, a day after U.N. aid chief Tom Fletcher said Israel had decided “to support a one-week scale-up of aid”.

    “We hope this pause will last much longer than a week, ultimately turning into a permanent ceasefire,” Fletcher’s spokesperson, Eri Kaneko, said on Monday.

    Netanyahu’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    Compared to last week, U.N. spokesperson Farhan Haq said, there had only been a “small uptick” in the amount of aid being transported into Gaza since Israel started the humanitarian pauses.

    TRUMP SAYS HAMAS DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH

    In his statement on Sunday, Netanyahu said Israel would continue to fight until it achieved the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas and the destruction of its military and governing capabilities.

    Trump said Hamas had become difficult to deal with in recent days, but he was talking with Netanyahu about “various plans” to free hostages still held in the enclave.

    The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked communities across the border in southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking another 251 hostage, according to Israeli tallies.

    The Gaza health ministry said that 98 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the past 24 hours.

    Some of the trucks that made it into Gaza were seized by desperate Palestinians, and some by armed looters, witnesses said.

    The Hamas-run Gaza government said only 87 aid trucks entered the Gaza Strip on Monday, with the majority of trucks looted due to what it described as “direct and systematic Israeli complicity”.

    “Currently aid comes for the strong who can race ahead, who can push others and grab a box or a sack of flour. That chaos must be stopped and protection for those trucks must be allowed,” said Emad, 58, who used to own a factory in Gaza City.

    The WFP said it has 170,000 metric tons of food in the region, outside Gaza, which would be enough to feed the whole population for the next three months if it gets the clearance to bring into the enclave.

    COGAT said more than 120 truckloads of aid were distributed in Gaza on Sunday by the U.N. and international organizations.

    More aid was expected on Monday. Qatar said it had sent 49 trucks that arrived in Egypt en route for Gaza. Jordan and the United Arab Emirates airdropped supplies.

    Israel cut off aid to Gaza from the start of March in what it said was a means to pressure Hamas into giving up dozens of hostages it still holds, and reopened aid with new restrictions in May. Hamas accuses Israel of using hunger as a weapon.

    Israel says it abides by international law but must prevent aid from being diverted by militants, and blames Hamas for the suffering of Gaza’s people.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Air-dropping food into Gaza is a ‘smokescreen’ – this is what must be done to prevent mass starvation

    Israel partially lifted its aid blockade of Gaza this week in response to intensifying international pressure over the man-made famine in the devastated coastal strip.

    The United Arab Emirates and Jordan airdropped 25 tonnes of food and humanitarian supplies on Sunday. Israel has further announced daily pauses in its military strikes on Gaza and the opening of humanitarian corridors to facilitate UN aid deliveries.

    Israel reports it has permitted 70 trucks per day into the strip since May 19. This is well below the 500–600 trucks required per day, according to the United Nations.

    The UN emergency relief chief, Tom Fletcher, has characterised the next few days as “make or break” for humanitarian agencies trying to reach more than two million Gazans facing “famine-like conditions”.

    A third of Gazans have gone without food for several days and 90,000 women and children now require urgent care for acute malnutrition. Local health authorities have reported 147 deaths from starvation so far, 80% of whom are children.

    Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed – without any evidence – “there is no starvation in Gaza”. This claim has been rejected by world leaders, including Netanyahu ally US President Donald Trump.

    Famine expert Alex de Waal has called the famine in Gaza without precedent:

    […] there’s no case of such minutely engineered, closely monitored, precisely designed mass starvation of a population as is happening in Gaza today.

    While the UN has welcomed the partial lifting of the blockade, the current aid being allowed into Gaza will not be enough to avert a wider catastrophe, due to the severity and depth of hunger in Gaza and the health needs of the people.

    According to the UN World Food Programme, which has enough food stockpiled to feed all of Gaza for three months, only one thing will work:

    An agreed ceasefire is the only way to reach everyone.

    Airdrops a ‘distraction and a smokescreen’

    Air-dropping food supplies is considered a last resort due to the undignified and unsafe manner in which the aid is delivered.

    The UN has already reported civilians being injured when packages have fallen on tents.

    The Global Protection Cluster, a network of non-governmental organisations and UN agencies, shared a story from a mother in Al Karama, east of Gaza City, whose home was hit by an airdropped pallet, causing the roof to collapse:

    Immediately following the impact, a group of people armed with knives rushed towards the house, while the mother locked herself and her children in the remaining room to protect her family. They did not receive any assistance and are fearful for their safety.

    Air-dropped pallets of food are also inefficient compared with what can be delivered by road.

    One truck can carry up to 20 tonnes of supplies. Trucks can also reach Gaza quickly if they are allowed to cross at the scale required. Aid agencies have repeatedly said they have the necessary aid and personnel sitting just one hour away at the border.

    Given how ineffective the air drops have been – and will continue to be – the head of the UN Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine has called them a “distraction” and a “smokescreen”.

    Malnourished women and children need specialised care

    De Waal has also made clear how starvation differs from other war crimes – it takes weeks of denying aid for starvation to take hold.

    For the 90,000 acutely malnourished women and children who require specialised and supplementary feeding, in addition to medical care, the type of food being air-dropped into Gaza will not help them. Malnourished children require nutritional screening and access to fortified pastes and baby food.

    Gaza’s decimated health system is also not able to treat severely malnourished women and children, who are at risk of “refeeding syndrome” when they are provided with nutrients again. This can trigger a fatal metabolic response.

    Gaza will take generations to heal from the long-term impacts of mass starvation. Malnourished children suffer lifelong cognitive and physical effects that can then be passed on to future generations.

    What needs to happen now

    The UN has characterised the limited reopening of aid deliveries to Gaza as a potential “lifeline”, if it’s upheld and expanded.

    According to Ciaran Donnelly from the International Rescue Committee, what’s needed is “tragically simple”: Israel must fully open the Gaza borders to allow aid and humanitarian personnel to flood in.

    Israel must also guarantee safe conditions for the dignified distribution of aid that reaches everyone, including women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities. The level of hunger and insecurity mean these groups are at high risk of exclusion.

    The people of Gaza have the world’s attention – for now. They have endured increasingly dehumanising conditions – including the risk of being shot trying to access aid – under the cover of war for more than 21 months.

    Two leading Israeli human rights organisations have just publicly called Israel’s war on Gaza “a genocide”. This builds on mounting evidence compiled by the UN and other experts that supports the same conclusion, triggering the duty under international law for all states to act to prevent genocide.

    These obligations require more than words – states must exercise their full diplomatic leverage to pressure Israel to let aid in at the scale required to avert famine. States must also pressure Israel to extend its military pauses into the only durable solution – a permanent ceasefire.

    A report released today by Greenpeace UK reveals how the Global Plastics Treaty is under threat from some of the world’s largest petrochemical companies who have been systematically lobbying against cuts to plastic production while generating massive profits from their growing plastics business. The report reveals that since the treaty talks began in November 2022, seven companies alone have produced enough plastic to fill 6.3 million rubbish trucks – equivalent to five and a half trucks every minute. 

    The report – ‘Plastics, Profits and Power: How petrochemical companies are derailing the Global Plastics Treaty’ draws on data obtained from industry sources. It finds that that since the start of the treaty process, Dow, ExxonMobil, BASF, Chevron Phillips, Shell, SABIC and INEOS have ramped up their plastic production capacity by 1.4 million tonnes and sent a combined total of 70 lobbyists to negotiations, where they have also been represented by powerful industry front groups.  

    Dow alone has sent at least 21 lobbyists to negotiations whilst earning an estimated £3.4 billion from plastics. The report also states that INEOS, the UK’s largest plastics producer, has raised production capacity by more than 20% and is investing £3.5 billion in Project ONE, set to become Europe’s biggest plastics plant in Antwerp, Belgium.

    The Greenpeace UK report comes just days before governments meet in Geneva, Switzerland, in the final round of treaty talks. The report reveals the tactics used by lobbyists to dominate negotiations, influence delegates, and block progress. It also highlights the lobbying by powerful trade associations at the talks, pushing industry-friendly positions while shielding corporate members from scrutiny.

    Anna Diski, the report’s author and Senior Plastics Campaigner with Greenpeace UK, said:

    “We all want to see a strong Global Plastics Treaty that turns the tide on plastic pollution. Our research shows that those with the most to lose from meaningful regulation are working hardest to obstruct it. We can’t allow the corporations who profit from plastic pollution to write the rules or we’ll end up with a toothless Treaty. It’s time to ban lobbyists from the Talks and for UN Member States to stand firm and support a strong Treaty.”

    According to CIEL, 220 fossil fuels lobbyists attended the fifth round of treaty negotiations in 2024 held in Busan, South Korea which ended without agreement. This made lobbyists the single largest delegation at the talks – more than the EU and its member states combined, outnumbering the delegates from the Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty by three to one. 

    Greenpeace is calling for at least a 75% reduction in plastic production by 2040 and is demanding that a strong conflict of interest policy be embedded in the treaty to prevent undue influence; negotiations must also prioritise those most affected by the plastics crisis, with space guaranteed for independent scientists, Indigenous Peoples, frontline communities and civil society groups, all of whom should all be able to play a role in shaping and implementing the treaty.

    The INC5.2 summit to agree a Global Plastics Treaty will run from 5-14 August 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland. Greenpeace will be present with an international delegation of 30 people representing Africa, Southeast and East Asia, Middle East and North Africa, Europe, Canada, Colombia and the US.  The delegation will use its extensive policy and legal experience and government relationships to push for greater ambition in the treaty process, particularly on the critical issue of delivering legally binding cuts to plastic production. 

    Greenpeace UK’s analysis is based on estimated global production figures for polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) for November/December 2022, 2023 and 2024 financial years, for Dow, ExxonMobil, BASF, Chevron, Shell, SABIC and INEOS, produced by Market Research Future (data available on request). This estimate covers two of the world’s most widely-used polymers, commonly found in packaging and consumer goods. It excludes other major plastic types such as PET and polystyrene, and excludes 2025 production data even as treaty talks continue into this year. As such, the final figure is presented as an underestimate of total plastic production during this time. To calculate the plastic volume in rubbish truck equivalents, Greenpeace UK used the standard capacity of a UK refuse truck, which holds approximately 12 metric tonnes of plastic waste.

    President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today bid farewell to Ms. R. Mukami Kariuki, the outgoing World Bank Country Manager for Uganda at State House, Entebbe.

    Ms. Kariuki, who assumed her role on August 1, 2021, has led the World Bank’s engagement with the Government of Uganda and overseeing the implementation of key development programs across the country.

    In a cordial exchange, President Museveni thanked Ms. Kariuki for her dedicated service and extended his best wishes as she concluded her assignment.

    “Thank you so much. I wish you good luck,” the President said.

    Ms. Kariuki expressed her gratitude to the President and the Ugandan government for the collaboration extended to her throughout her tenure.

    “Your Excellency, I appreciate the support and partnership we have had. It has been a pleasure working with Uganda,” she said.

    The meeting was also attended by Mr. Qimiao Fan, the World Bank Country Director for Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, and Uganda, who is based in Nairobi.

    Mr. Fan noted the Bank’s keen interest in supporting Uganda’s agricultural transformation, job creation for the youth, and renewable energy development.

    “Uganda has great potential. You have fertile soils, abundant sunshine for renewable energy, and a rapidly growing young population that needs jobs,” Mr. Fan said.

    He emphasized the need to increase agricultural productivity through strategic investments in irrigation, improved transport networks, and access to better seeds and fertilizers.

    “Despite your fertile soils, Uganda’s agricultural productivity remains relatively low. Investing in irrigation and logistics can help farmers access markets more effectively,” he added.

    President Museveni responded by highlighting Uganda’s achievements in agricultural research, particularly in seed development and irrigation.

    “We already have improved seeds for crops like coffee, bananas, maize, cassava, and potatoes. Our research centers have done their job. The challenge now is funding the uptake and supporting farmers to apply the technologies,” the President said.

    He also highlighted the success of Prof. Florence Muranga from Bushenyi, who, through irrigation, harvests 53 tonnes of bananas per acre annually far exceeding the district’s average of 5 tonnes.

    President Museveni further underscored the need to shift communities out of wetlands and into sustainable fish farming on the periphery, which would allow the use of swamp water for irrigation while restoring the wetland ecosystem.

    “We want to move people from wetlands and support them to do fish farming on the edge. That way, we preserve the wetlands and still use the water for irrigation,” he explained.

    He also reflected on the cultural importance of agriculture to Uganda, noting that many of the country’s staple crops such as millet, bananas, and cassava are indigenous and form part of Uganda’s agricultural heritage.

    “Agriculture is part of our ancient heritage. These crops are not foreign; they are ours,” the President said.

    He concluded by reaffirming the government’s readiness to engage further and collaborate on these areas of interest.

  • MIL-OSI China: 80 years on, story of Flying Tigers still unites two peoples

    Eighty years after the end of World War II, a county in central China still echoes with memories of international solidarity forged in wartime.

    In Zhijiang Dong autonomous county in Huaihua, Hunan province, the Flying Tigers Memorial Museum stands to honor a remarkable chapter of shared history between China and the United States — the story of the American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers, during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

    In 1937, the year Japan launched its full-scale invasion of China, Claire Lee Chennault, a retired lieutenant from the U.S. Army Air Corps, was invited by the Chinese government to serve as chief advisor to the Chinese Air Force and help develop its aerial capabilities.

    In 1941, the Flying Tigers was officially formed in Zhijiang, with Chennault as the commander. That December, after two squadrons successfully fended off Japanese aircraft over Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, the name Flying Tigers spread across China.

    Inside the museum that honors the Flying Tigers, visitors are captivated by a wall that displays the squadron emblems, tracing the four stages of their development in China. Most of the emblems feature cartoon-style wartime designs.

    Through a large collection of artifacts, including fighter aircraft, personal belongings, original documents, and photographs, the museum portrays the mutual assistance and deep friendship between the Flying Tigers and the Chinese people.

    One notable exhibit is a flight jacket worn by a Flying Tigers member, donated by a veteran during his return to Zhijiang for a cultural festival after WWII.

    Sewn onto the back of the jacket is a blood chit, carrying a message in Chinese that reads: “This foreigner (American) has come to China to help in the war. Soldiers and civilians, please offer him rescue and protection.”

    The message was meant to identify Flying Tigers members who would parachute or crash-land in Japanese-occupied areas. By showing it to Chinese soldiers or civilians, they could quickly be recognized and receive help. It therefore became known as a life-saving chit.

    The museum’s exhibits not only reflect the camaraderie between the Chinese and American people in their joint fight against fascism, but also underscore a broader message — one of mutual respect and enduring friendship between nations. 

    Today, the museum continues to receive support from the U.S., including numerous donated artifacts — a testament to the enduring commitment of both nations to honor the legacy of the Flying Tigers.

    Wu Jianhong, director of the museum, said that families of Flying Tigers members still visit China to donate items, keeping alive the shared spirit of cherishing peace.

    “It can be said that the Flying Tigers Memorial Museum is a commemorative site jointly built by the Chinese and American people,” Wu said.

    Near the exit of the museum stands the Wall of Heroes, inscribed with the names of 882 Chinese Air Force soldiers and 2,197 Flying Tigers members who lost their lives during the war.

    “The names on the wall honor those heroes whose identities could be confirmed,” said Deng Yu, a guide at the museum. “But many others remain unnamed — their sacrifices are remembered just the same.”

    Greener journeys, skilled jobs and stronger UK manufacturing were all on the agenda today (28 July 2025), as government ministers and metro mayors came together in Westminster to commit to greener transport and greater job opportunities across the regions.

    The fifth meeting of the UK Bus Manufacturing Expert Panel was chaired by the Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, and Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood, with wider attendance from mayors including David Skaith (York and North Yorkshire), Richard Parker (West Midlands), and Steve Rotheram (Liverpool), alongside Scotland Office Minister Kirsty McNeill and the Scottish Government’s Transport Minister, Fiona Hyslop.

    The session focussed on the future pipeline of zero-emission bus orders, in order to give UK manufacturers the long-term certainty needed to invest and grow.

    The panel also committed to ensuring that new zero emission buses bring real social benefits to the communities they serve, and work to support local employment, sustainability, and inclusivity.

    Attendees also committed to ensuring that every pound of public money spent on zero emission buses provides the greatest social benefits for communities and the economy.

    The panel’s inaugural meeting took place in Sheffield earlier this year, and set out to ensure that the UK remains a leader in bus building while helping local authorities to deliver their transport ambitions.

    The government is working closely with local authorities to ensure new bus orders continue to support the UK supply chain and deliver cleaner, more reliable transport for passengers. Currently, around 60% of zero-emission buses funded through the government’s ZEBRA (Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas) programmes are being built by UK-based manufacturers, and the panel is committed to supporting manufacturers as they undertake these new contracts, to ensure that they support regional growth and support opportunities that deliver the Plan for Change.

    Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, said:

    It was great to bring mayors together today for the fifth meeting of the bus manufacturing expert panel, where we committed to building a strong pipeline of future zero-emission bus orders.

    By mapping out future demand, we’re giving industry the certainty they need to grow – supporting jobs, delivering better buses for passengers, and accelerating our journey towards a cleaner, greener transport system, while delivering our Plan for Change.

    Earlier this year, the Government announced nearly £38 million to deliver 319 new zero emission buses across 12 cities in England by spring 2027, with each pound of funding matched by at least £3 of private investment. 

    Among the biggest beneficiaries were:

    • Nottinghamshire County Council, who are benefitting from £2.3 million to launch 42 new electric buses
    • Hull City Council, where £3.9 million has been allocated to provide 42 vehicles
    • West of England Combined Authority, who are receiving nearly £20 million for 160 buses

    The UK government has also recently allocated a further £28 million to deliver new zero emission buses in Sheffield and Bradford, to improve air quality on key city centre routes.

    The push for cleaner bus travel is also supported by the Bus Services Bill, which is currently progressing through Parliament. The Bill will give local authorities more control over how services are planned and delivered, while introducing new powers to end the use of new diesel buses in England from no earlier than 2030.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: School program prevents teen vaping

    In a major public health breakthrough, an Australian trial of the school-based OurFutures Vaping Prevention Education program has demonstrated real-world outcomes in preventing youth vaping. 

    Published in leading global health journal, The Lancet today, a randomised controlled trial involving more than 5,000 students across 40 schools found students who participated in the program were 65 per cent less likely to have used vapes after 12 months compared to those who did not do the course and 80 per cent said the information they learned will help them handle vaping situations in future.

    Funded by the Albanese Government through the Medical Research Futures Fund and National Health and Medical Research Council, the trial is the first Australian school-based eHealth intervention proven to prevent vaping use in adolescents.

    The program uses cartoon-based stories, quizzes, and classroom activities to engage and inform students. It was co-designed with young people and teachers to fit the national curriculum.

    These positive findings come as the latest data from Generation Vape reveals that young people are vaping less and that vaping is increasingly seen as uncool and socially unacceptable among young people.

    The OurFutures vaping program will be rolled out in schools across the country until 2028, with long-term follow-up data expected in 2026.

    The work of the Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System – dubbed the Madlanga Commission – has begun “in earnest”.

    This according to Commission Chairperson, Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, who briefed the media on Monday afternoon.

    The commission was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa following serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

    The Provincial Commissioner made several allegations about an alleged criminal syndicate that has spread into law enforcement and intelligence services, as well as allegations implicating the judiciary, prosecutors, politicians and now suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

    “We can assure South Africans that the work of the commission has commenced in earnest. To be specific, our first consultation with a witness is imminent.

    “That consultation will help inform what further information the commission must follow up on,” he said.

    He added that the commission is mindful that the public is “eager to see the first witness in the witness stand”.

    “We too are eager to see that happen and are acting with the necessary expedition to see it happen.

    “That said, the fact that Lieutenant General… Mkhwanazi made the allegations does not make us ready to start hearing evidence immediately. There must be consultation and assessment of the information we gather and a follow up for buttressing the information we’ve gathered, should that be necessary,” Madlanga said.

    This, he added, could include further consultations.

    “We assure South Africans that we are treating the matter with the urgency that it deserves and that the commission hearings will commence as soon as the necessary initial steps to bring us to that stage have been finalised.

    “We anticipate that that will be during August 2025,” he said.

    Madlanga said the entities and persons under scrutiny are the SA Police Service, metro police in Gauteng, the National Prosecuting Authority, the State Security Agency, the judiciary, Correctional Services, any other institution in the criminal justice system and any member of the executive responsible for the criminal justice system.

    “These entities and persons are to be investigated in relation to infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates.

    “By the end of the first three-month period, we want to be in a position to submit an interim report, which, if the evidence will have shown as much, will make recommendations regarding concrete action that needs to be taken,” he said.

    Securing premises

    The process to secure a building for the commission, is underway as well as other infrastructure requirements.

    “The public will be advised of the premises and online facilities where they can lodge information as soon as this question of procurement has been finalised. What we can say at this stage is that the commission hearings will be in Gauteng. We are doing our best to ensure that the procurement side is resolved with expedition.

    “The lack of infrastructure does not affect the progress of the work of the commission. We are proceeding with the commission’s preparatory work full steam ahead,” Madlanga said.

    Furthermore, appointments of professionals, who will assist the commission, have been made.

    Justice Madlanga will be assisted by Advocate Sesi Baloyi SC and Advocate Sandile Khumalo SC.

    SHIJIAZHUANG, July 29 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a landslide in north China’s Hebei Province has risen to eight, with four people still missing as of Tuesday afternoon.

    Rescuers managed to find four of the eight people reported missing after the incident, but all four were found dead, and the search for the others is ongoing, the Chengde city government told Xinhua.

    A landslide occurred on July 28 in Xigou Village, Luanping County, administratively subordinate to Chengde City. Heavy rains were reported to be the cause of the emergency.

    Rain is expected on Tuesday as well, and the likelihood of new landslides and avalanches is estimated to be high, which is why local authorities intend to evacuate all residents of the village of Sigou. -0-

    KUWAIT, July 29 (Xinhua) — Kuwait announced on Monday the launch of an “air bridge” to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip following a three-day donation campaign launched by the government last week.

    Assistant Foreign Minister for Development and International Cooperation Hamad Al-Meshan said the funds raised would be used to purchase humanitarian aid from the local market, including oil, flour and other essential items.

    He added that the supplies would be delivered to the Egyptian city of El Arish by military aircraft and handed over to the Egyptian Red Crescent in coordination with its Kuwaiti counterparts.

    H. Al-Meshan also noted the possibility of transferring part of the aid to Jordan, and then the Jordanian army would drop it from the air into Gaza.

    Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry, in a statement last week, reiterated its condemnation of Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has further worsened hunger and malnutrition in the besieged enclave. –0–

    The government continues to improve the system of calling emergency services using the single number 112.

    A resolution was signed on the integration of the new state information system “Centralized system for collecting information from 112 systems”, operating on the basis of the unified GosTech platform, into the information space of regional 112 call systems.

    This integration will allow for the automatic generation of internal information on the measures taken to respond to calls to a single number. It will be sent to various federal and regional authorities, including the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Ministry of Health, to improve work with emergency calls.

    While touring Cornish Metals in Redruth this week, the Chancellor confirmed that a £28.6 million investment delivered by the National Wealth Fund to help finance the re-opening of the South Crofty Tin mine could create 1,300 jobs for the region.

    As well as the project itself creating over 300 jobs, it is estimated that a further 1,000 jobs will be created more widely as the company uses more local suppliers like metal fabricators and electricians and the mine itself will fuel supply chains in in the UK.

    Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, said:

    Despite having so much potential to grow, Cornwall has been neglected by successive governments, and its families and businesses have suffered as a result.

    Like in every part of the UK, I am determined to unlock growth that creates jobs and puts more money in Cornish people’s pockets.

    Our investment to revive Cornwall’s proud tin mining industry and the thousands of jobs it will create for years to come is one way we are renewing the county, and there is more to come in our Plan for Change.

    Ensuring local councils are more lenient when considering licensing applications, making it easier for pubs to serve their customers outside and for longer, and binning the outdated rule that businesses need to pay to advertise in locally printed press if applying for a license are three of ten recommendations being considered by the government so the hospitality industry in Cornwall and further afield can thrive.

    A consultation on the proposals will be launched later this year and this follows the reform of planning rules announced in the Autumn, which will further free the hospitality industry from growth-stunting regulations, fuel the economy and reduce government borrowing by £3.4 billion. This comes ahead of the publication of the Small Business Plan, which will show how the Plan for Change will rejuvenate smaller businesses and put more money in people’s pockets.

    The Chancellor also visited APCL A&P Falmouth, where she saw at first hand, how the ship repair facility supports the Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, and commercial vessels.

    The Chancellor welcomed APCL’s plans to redevelop the docks. The proposed expansion would significantly increase the port’s capacity for supporting defence, offshore, ferries and cruise vessels.

    As well as hearing about the economic benefits the plans could deliver for Cornwall, she also discussed APCL’s contribution to the deployment of floating offshore wind infrastructure as the government works to boost the country’s homegrown, clean energy supply to bring down bills for families.

    As the government has stepped up efforts to transform Britain into a clean energy superpower and support households to upgrade their heating and energy efficiency, Kensa aims to support this by expanding its operations significantly, increasing its workforce from 200 to 450 by 2030 and growing its heat pump production and installations from 2,500 a year to 25,000 a year.

    The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) followed the live broadcast of the High Council of State (HCS) session on Sunday, 27 July,  during which 95 members elected a new Presidency. The Mission noted that voting proceeded under normal conditions and with transparency.

    UNSMIL is of the view that yesterday’s two-thirds attendance reflects a broad consensus among members to overcome the division that has hindered its ability to fulfill its responsibilities over the last year. The Mission echoes the calls to expand internal consensus by engaging those members who did not attend yesterday’s session.

    The Mission congratulates the new Presidency and looks forward to constructive engagement with all Council members to break the stalemate, advance the political process, and end the protracted transitional phases.

    It further expects the Council to responsibly carry out its functions, as outlined in the Libyan Political Agreement, consistent with its independent political role and Libyans’ aspirations to end institutional division, restore legitimacy through elections and contribute to necessary reforms.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Global hunger declines, but rises in Africa and western Asia: United Nation (UN) report

    An estimated 8.2 percent of the global population, or about 673 million people, experienced hunger in 2024, down from 8.5 percent in 2023 and 8.7 percent in 2022. However, progress was not consistent across the globe, as hunger continued to rise in most subregions of Africa and western Asia, according to this year’s The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI 2025) report published today by five specialized agencies of the United Nations.

    Launched during the Second UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) in Addis Ababa, SOFI 2025 indicates that between 638 and 720 million people faced hunger in 2024. Based on the point estimate* of 673 million, this represents a decrease of 15 million people from 2023 and of 22 million from 2022.

    While the decline is welcome, the latest estimates remain above pre-pandemic levels, with the high food inflation of recent years contributing to the slow recovery in food security.

    Notable improvements are seen in southern Asia and Latin America. The prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) in Asia fell from 7.9 percent in 2022 to 6.7 percent, or 323 million people, in 2024. Additionally, Latin America and the Caribbean as a region saw the PoU fall to 5.1 percent, or 34 million people, in 2024, down from a peak of 6.1 percent in 2020.

    Unfortunately, this positive trend contrasts sharply with the steady rise in hunger across Africa and western Asia, including in many countries affected by prolonged food crises. The proportion of the population facing hunger in Africa surpassed 20 percent in 2024, affecting 307 million people, while in western Asia an estimated 12.7 percent of the population, or more than 39 million people, may have faced hunger in 2024.

    It is projected that 512 million people could be chronically undernourished by 2030. Almost 60 percent of those will be in Africa. This highlights the immense challenge of achieving SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), warned the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations agency for children (UNICEF), the UN World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

    Tracking nutrition targets

    • From 2023 to 2024, the global prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity – an assessment registering the experience of constraints on access to adequate food during part of the year – decreased slightly, from 28.4 to 28.0 percent, accounting for 2.3 billion people. This is 335 million more than in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, and 683 million more than in 2015, when the Sustainable Development Agenda was adopted.
    • Among the indicators of child nutrition, the prevalence of stunting in children under five declined from 26.4 percent in 2012 to 23.2 percent in 2024, reflecting global progress.
    • The prevalence of child overweight (5.3 percent in 2012 and 5.5 percent in 2024), and in child wasting (7.4 percent in 2012 and 6.6 percent in 2024) remains largely unchanged.
    • The percentage of infants under six months exclusively breastfed increased significantly, from 37.0 percent in 2012 to 47.8 percent in 2023, reflecting growing recognition of its health benefits.
    • The prevalence of adult obesity rose from 12.1 percent in 2012 to 15.8 percent in 2022.
    • New data show an increase in the global prevalence of anaemia among women aged 15 to 49, from 27.6 percent in 2012 to 30.7 percent in 2023.
    • Estimates for a new SDG indicator introduced in the report reveal that about one-third of children aged 6 to 23 months and two-thirds of women aged 15 to 49 years met minimum dietary diversity.

    Food inflation

    SOFI 2025 also examines the causes and consequences of the 2021–2023 food price surge and its impact on food security and nutrition.

    The report highlights that the global policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic – characterized by extensive fiscal and monetary interventions – combined with the impacts of the war in Ukraine and extreme weather events, contributed to recent inflationary pressures.

    This food price inflation has hindered the post-pandemic recovery in food security and nutrition. Since 2020, global food price inflation has consistently outpaced headline inflation. The gap peaked in January 2023, with food inflation reaching 13.6 percent, 5.1 percentage points above the headline rate of 8.5 percent.

    Low-income countries have been particularly hit hard by rising food prices. While median global food price inflation increased from 2.3 percent in December 2020 to 13.6 percent in early 2023, it climbed even higher in low-income countries, peaking at 30 percent in May 2023.

    Despite rising global food prices, the number of people unable to afford a healthy diet fell from 2.76 billion in 2019 to 2.60 billion in 2024. However, the improvement was uneven. In low-income countries, where the cost of a healthy diet rose more sharply than in higher-income countries, the number of people unable to afford a healthy diet increased from 464 million in 2019 to 545 million in 2024. In lower-middle-income countries (excluding India), the number rose from 79 million in 2019 to 869 million over the same period.

    The report recommends a combination of policy responses to food price inflation. They include targeted and time-bound fiscal measures, such as social protection programs, to safeguard vulnerable households; credible and transparent monetary policies to contain inflationary pressures; and strategic investments in agrifood R&D, transport and production infrastructure, and market information systems to improve productivity and resilience.

SOFI 2025 serves as a critical reminder that we need to intensify efforts to ensure that everyone has access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. To achieve this, we must work collaboratively and innovatively with governments, organizations, and communities to address the specific challenges faced by vulnerable populations, especially in regions where hunger remains persistent.”

    IFAD President, Alvaro Lario: “In times of rising food prices and disrupted global value chains, we must step up our investments in rural and agricultural transformation. These investments are not only essential for ensuring food and nutrition security – they are also critical for global stability.”

    UNICEF Executive Director, Catherine Russell: “Every child deserves the chance to grow and thrive. Yet over 190 million children under the age of 5 are affected by undernutrition, which can have negative consequences for their physical and mental development. This robs them of the chance to live to their fullest potential. The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report for 2025 underscores the need to act urgently for the world’s youngest and most vulnerable children, as rising food prices could deepen nutrition insecurity for millions of families. We must work in collaboration with governments, the private sector and communities themselves to ensure that vulnerable families have access to food that is affordable and with adequate nutrition for children to develop. That includes strengthening social protection programs and teaching parents about locally produced nutritious food for children, including the importance of breastfeeding, which provides the best start to a baby’s life.

    WFP Executive Director, Cindy McCain: “Hunger remains at alarming levels, yet the funding needed to tackle it is falling. Last year, WFP reached 124 million people with lifesaving food assistance. This year, funding cuts of up to 40 percent mean that tens of millions of people will lose the vital lifeline we provide. While the small reduction in overall rates of food insecurity is welcome, the continued failure to provide critical aid to people in desperate need will soon wipe out these hard-won gains, sparking further instability in volatile regions of the world.”

    WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: “In recent years, the world has made good progress in reducing stunting and supporting exclusive breastfeeding, but there is still much to be done to relieve millions of people from the burdens of food insecurity and malnutrition.   • MIL-OSI China: Flood relief efforts stepped up in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei

    The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has sent three working groups to assist and guide flood control and disaster relief efforts in Beijing and Tianjin cities and Hebei province and has elevated the flood control emergency response for the areas to Level III — the third highest of the four-tier system — since Monday evening.

    Severe rainstorms have swept North China since July 23, leading to high water levels in some reservoirs, breaches in river embankments and significant flooding. Beijing’s Miyun and Huairou districts, as well as Chengde and Zhangjiakou in Hebei province were hit hard.

    On Monday, the National Commission for Disaster Reduction activated a Level IV national emergency response, the lowest one, for Beijing and Hebei, deploying teams to provide guidance for disaster relief efforts, including ensuring the basic needs of affected people.

    The central government has increased the allocation of 43,000 items of disaster relief supplies, including folding beds, towels, blankets, emergency lighting, on the basis of the previously allocated disaster relief materials to the affected areas.

    The Red Cross Society of China provided 2,000 sets of household emergency kits and assisted the affected areas with food, drinking water, maternal and infant supplies and hygiene kits.

    On Tuesday, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management allocated 350 million yuan ($48.8 million) to support rescue efforts in nine provinces, regions and municipalities including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Jilin and Shandong.

    The World Health Organization (WHO), together with the Government of Brazil and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), will host the 2025 Global Conference on Climate and Health in Brasília, Brazil, from 29– 31 July 2025. This critical event is an official pre-COP30 meeting and comes at a pivotal time as climate change increasingly threatens global health. It offers a key platform for advancing bold and equitable climate-health solutions. The Conference is also the second meeting of the Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and health (ATACH).

    For over 25 years, WHO has warned that climate change poses a direct threat to human health,” said Dr Maria Neira, Director, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health at WHO. “The danger is no longer theoretical –  it is a lived reality. Climate change is fuelling a health crisis and threatens to undo decades of global health progress.

    Conference goals

    The Brasília Conference will help chart a clear course toward COP30 and beyond. 

    Main expected outcomes include:

    • concrete inputs to the draft Belém Health Action Plan, a roadmap for embedding health into global climate policy;
    • national commitments under ATACH to support the implementation of the Belém Health Action Plan;
    • defined pathways for promoting health as a core pillar of climate action in the lead-up to COP30; and
    • scientific deliverables to support health-informed climate policies and implementation.

    “The impacts of climate change affect primarily the most vulnerable, who are an absolute priority for the Brazilian government.     WHO is working closely with the COP30 Presidency to ensure that health remains central to all climate negotiations. The Conference will spotlight strategies for building resilient health systems, promoting sustainable and low-carbon health systems, and reinforcing the link between climate, biodiversity, air quality, and public health.

    After years of commitments, the moment for action is now. WHO is calling on all countries to dramatically scale up investments in climate-health mitigation, adaptation, and resilience.

    WHO emphasizes that human health, the environment, and the climate are inseparably connected, and failure to act decisively on climate change could lead to widespread health catastrophes. Rising temperatures, extreme weather, and worsening air pollution already cause millions of deaths and undermine global health systems. But coordinated action can still reverse this trajectory.

    The WHO will launch its 7th Global Evidence Review on Health and Migration (GEHM) report – focused on the health of migrants in the context of climate change – on Tuesday, 28 July.

    July 29 2025 – The Federal Reserve is expected to leave interest rates on hold Wednesday, despite mounting pressure from President Donald Trump – setting up a direct standoff between the world’s most influential central bank and a White House demanding immediate stimulus.

    This is the warning from Nigel Green, CEO of global financial advisory giant deVere Group ahead of the Fed’s critical interest rate decision that will set the tone for markets and the US economy for the rest of 2025.

    He says: “Trump has made no secret of his frustration. Senior administration figures have been pressing the Fed behind the scenes, while the President has repeatedly gone public with calls for lower borrowing costs.

    “But the central bank appears likely to resist, at least for now, holding firm in the face of aggressive political intervention.

    “In doing so, it could trigger another direct standoff with Trump.

    Nigel Green continues: “This is a collision between a political push for immediate stimulus and a central bank trying to defend its institutional independence. The stakes go far beyond this week’s rate decision.”

    Markets are already attuned to the tension. A rate hold is largely priced in. But investors are watching for what comes next: the tone of Powell’s message, and Trump’s reaction if the Fed refuses to deliver the cuts he’s demanding.

    “The pressure campaign is about to intensify,” the deVere CEO notes.

    “Trump blames the Fed for slowing the economy, for capping the market, for anything that doesn’t go his way. This will, again, become personal with Fed Chair, Jerome Powell.”

    The economic backdrop gives the Fed cover to pause. Inflation has cooled but remains above target. Labor markets are still tight. Financial conditions are already easier than they were at the start of the year. There is no immediate economic case for cutting—but there is a clear political one.

    “This is about optics as much as outcomes,” says Nigel Green. “The White House wants momentum. The Fed wants breathing room. Neither side is likely to back down.”

    What happens next matters. If Trump launches a fresh public offensive—as expected—it could shift sentiment quickly.

    “The dollar could strengthen on Fed firmness, while equities and emerging markets wobble on fears of a widening institutional rift.”

    He adds: “Markets can handle steady rates. What they don’t handle well is institutional volatility. A public fight between the President and the Fed injects uncertainty into every asset class.”

    The President has options. If monetary easing doesn’t come through, he may accelerate fiscal promises, hint at further executive action, or reignite questions over Jerome Powell’s future.

    This administration has already shown it’s willing to blur lines between economic stewardship and political advantage.

    “Trump wants control of the economic narrative and he’s running out of patience,” concludes Nigel Green.

    “If the Fed doesn’t move, he’ll move the spotlight. This could mean spending pledges, it could mean trade posturing, it could mean fresh attacks on Powell. All of it adds risk.”

    Five years ago, on July 29, India embarked on a journey to overhaul its education system with the launch of the National Education Policy 2020. Today, its impact is increasingly visible in classrooms across the country – reshaping how children learn, how teachers teach, and how schools function.

    NEP 2020 marked a paradigm shift from rigid, exam-centric education to a more flexible, inclusive, and learner-focused model. Anchored in India’s cultural heritage and aligned with global goals like Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG-4), the policy laid out a vision for an education system that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning – from the foundational stage to secondary levels.

    One of NEP’s major successes has been the prioritisation of early childhood education and foundational learning. With the launch of the NIPUN Bharat Mission in 2021, the government aimed to ensure that every child achieves Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) by Grade 3. Initiatives such as Vidya Pravesh, Balvatikas, and Jadui Pitara have introduced millions of children to joyful, play-based learning. The results have been promising: Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 reported a significant rise in foundational reading and arithmetic levels among Class III children in government schools. 23.4% children could read Grade II-level text in 2024, up from 16.3% in 2022 and 20.9% in 2018. Arithmetic proficiency has also improved, with 27.6% of Class III students now able to perform basic subtraction, compared to 20.2% in 2022 and 20.9% in 2018.

    A restructured school framework under the 5+3+3+4 model is supported by two new national curriculum frameworks – National Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage (NCF-FS) and National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). These have replaced rote learning with competency-based, multidisciplinary education. New textbooks like Mridang, Sarangi, and Joyful Mathematics reflect India’s linguistic and cultural diversity while encouraging deeper engagement and creativity. Vocational education now begins as early as Grade 6, and career pathways are supported through the National Credit Framework.

    Samagra Shiksha, the flagship school reform scheme, has helped boost enrolment and reduce dropouts. Infrastructure has improved substantially – with nearly all schools having access to drinking water, electricity, and gender-inclusive toilets. Hostels under schemes like Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) and Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJGUA), along with 5,269 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, have provided critical support to girls and children from marginalised communities.

    The digital push has also been transformative. Platforms like Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing (DIKSHA) and PM eVIDYA have enabled access to quality learning content in over 130 languages, even during the pandemic. The Rashtriya Vidya Samiksha Kendra (RVSK) now provides real-time education data, improving governance and accountability.

    Teachers remain central to NEP’s success. Over 14 lakh educators have undergone training through National Initiative for School Heads’ and Teachers’ Holistic Advancement (NISHTHA), with continuous support through digital platforms. Assessment reforms are underway through Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH), which has championed competency-based evaluations and holistic progress cards that assess not only academics but creativity, socio-emotional development, and well-being.

    NEP 2020 also places strong emphasis on inclusion. The Pre Assessment Holistic Screening Tool (PRASHAST) tool helps schools support children with disabilities, while Indian Sign Language has been introduced as a secondary subject. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has developed flexible pathways for out-of-school children and even for Agniveers to complete their education.

    The service can be used from anywhere in the country. It helps entrepreneurs enter the interregional market and increase sales.

    “The most active regions using the trading bot were Moscow, the Moscow and Ryazan regions, St. Petersburg and the Perm region. In total, in the first half of the year, they accounted for 38.4 thousand contracts worth 5.7 billion rubles, which is 86 percent of the total number and 83 percent of the volume of all transactions concluded using this function,” said the head of the Moscow City Department for Competition Policy

In Lefortovo, about 2.7 thousand Muscovites from 18 vacated houses received the keys.

    Lt. Gen. John W. Brennan, Deputy Commander for U.S. Africa Command, and Ambassador Robert Scott, AFRICOM’s Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, traveled to Angola, July 22-25, to meet with Angolan government and military leaders and Chargé d’Affaires Noah Zaring and his team at U.S. Embassy Angola and Sao Tome and Principe. 

    The visit reaffirmed AFRICOM’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Angola, a security leader in southern Africa, and came on the heels of a meeting with the Namibian Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs on July 21. 

    The AFRICOM leaders and Chargé d’Affaires Zaring engaged in meetings with Angola’s Secretary of State for National Defense for the Ministry of Defense José Maria de Lima; Secretary of State for External Affairs for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Esmerelda Mendonça; and Joint Chief of Staff for Patriotic Education General José Maria Marques.

    Discussions focused on advancing shared security and economic interests, to include countering transnational threats to the U.S. Homeland and Angola, enabling partners to lead their own security initiatives with minimal U.S. involvement, and leveraging shared economic opportunities, notably the transformational Lobito Corridor initiative. 

    The Lobito Corridor is a large-scale infrastructure initiative, backed by the G7, that is designed to connect the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia to Angola’s Atlantic coast at the port of Lobito, providing inland industries like mining and agriculture with effective and timely access to global markets and furthering domestic and international investments.

    The two leaders emphasized that security underpins private sector investments. Working together with African nations to develop secure, stable countries, regions and economies, allows for environments where economic opportunities and partnerships thrive.

    During their visit, Scott, who has 30 years of State Department experience in Africa, and Brennan, a career special forces officer and leader, also traveled to a training base near Cabo Ledo where they met with Special Forces Brigade Commander Brigadier João Baptista Paulo and other special forces leaders and soldiers. While there, Brennan took part in a wreath laying ceremony at a memorial honoring fallen Angolan special forces members.

    The two also observed U.S. and Angolan special forces involved in a live fire exercise being conducted during a Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) focused on close quarters combat and small unit tactics. JCETs and large-scale AFRICOM exercises bring together partners and allies to enhance readiness and interoperability and sharpen warfighter skillsets, empowering lethal, combat ready forces to deter aggression and win on the battlefield. This is the fifth JCET conducted between U.S. and Angolan forces since 2022.

    In addition to participating in AFRICOM sponsored exercises and conferences, Angola has also been accepted into the 2025 cohort of State Partnership Program (SPP) nations, a comprehensive Department of Defense program that partners allied and partner nations with a U.S. state and its National Guard forces. Through SPP, the National Guard conducts military-to-military exchanges and training in support of U.S. and partner nation defense security goals. SPP also leverages whole-of-society relationships and capabilities to facilitate broader cooperation spanning military, government, economic and social spheres. An announcement of which state has been partnered with Angola is expected in the Fall.

    Insolvency Rules Committee: Reappointment of 2 solicitor members

    The Lord Chancellor has approved the reappointments of Robert Paterson and Alexander Wood as solicitor members of the Insolvency Rules Committee.

    The Lord Chancellor has approved the reappointments, for a second term of Robert Paterson and Alexander Wood as Solicitor Members of the Insolvency Rules Committee for four years. Robert Paterson second term will commence on 26 June 2026. Alexander Wood’s second term will commence on 30 September 2026.

    Biographies

    Robert Paterson is a partner at Wedlake Bell LLP and specialises in all aspects of restructuring and insolvency law. He acts for officeholders, lenders, directors and creditors. He has recently advised on several cross-border insolvencies. Robert spent six months on secondment to the Policy Unit of the Insolvency Service. He is also a licensed insolvency practitioner.

    He has not declared any political activity.

    Alexander Wood is a partner at McDermott Will & Emery. He has over 25 years’ experience working on some of the most complex insolvency and restructuring matters including Westinghouse, MF Global, the Lehman Bros cases and the sovereign debt restructures of Ukraine and Argentina. He is also an Honorary Professor of Practice at UCL where he teaches corporate restructuring and insolvency at post-graduate level.

    He has not declared any political activity.

    The reappointment of Solicitor members of the Insolvency Rules Committee are made, by the Lord Chancellor after consulting the Lady Chief Justice, under Section 413 of the Insolvency Act 1986.

    The appointment of non-judicial members of the Insolvency Rules Committee are regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments and recruitment and reappointment processes comply with the Governance Code on Public Appointments.
