  • MIL-OSI Security: Important stolen artworks returned from Italy to Spain with support of Eurojust

    Eurojust has played a pivotal role in returning 66 stolen historic artworks from Italy to Spain. In one case, 65 precious paintings and an altarpiece were returned with the support of European Investigation Orders (EIOs), among other measures.

    In an unrelated case, a wooden carved statue, stolen from a church in Palencia, Spain, in 1979, was handed over to the Spanish authorities following its discovery and subsequent investigations in Genoa. Eurojust assisted with the issuance and execution of a freezing order.

    The wooden statue depicts the evangelist Saint Luke and dates from the 15th century. It was stolen from the Santa Eugenia de Astudillo church in Palencia, to which it will be returned in due course. After its theft, it was bought by an art collector in Genoa, who was unaware that it had been stolen.

    When relatives of the collector put it up for auction in 2022, the theft came to light, and its origin was established as the church in Palencia. Following a freezing order issued by the Spanish authorities and with the support of Eurojust, the restitution procedure began. The statue was formally returned to the Spanish authorities last week.

    At the same time, the Italian authorities handed over a series of 65 paintings and an altarpiece to their Spanish counterparts. These artworks were discovered in the villa of a deceased German collector and his wife at Lago Maggiore in Italy. After his death, a foundation initiated civil proceedings to obtain the historic paintings. In 2023, these proceedings led to investigations by the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.

    These investigations revealed that the artworks had also been stolen and originated from Spain or had Spanish owners. Eurojust provided support in this case through its Italian and Spanish National Desks, assisting with the execution of EIOs and enabling cross-border judicial cooperation.

    The investigations and actions relating to the two cases of stolen artwork were carried out by or requested by the following authorities:

    • Italy: Public Prosecutor’s Offices (PPOs) of Genoa, Turin and Verbania; Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Comando Tutela Patrimonio Culturale)
    • Spain: Investigative Judge of Court no. 2 of Palencia; Investigative Judge of Court no. 1 of Marbella; Civil Guard – Historical Heritage Section (Guardia Civil – Sección de Patrimonio Histórico)

    On Sunday, 6 July at 21:14hrs officers on patrol were notified by members of the public of a stabbing in Chingford Mount Road, E4.

    Officers attended the scene and found a 26-year-old man with a stab wound. London’s Air Ambulance and the London Ambulance Service also attended.

    The officers gave first aid on arrival but despite the best efforts of all the emergency services, the man sadly died at the scene.

    The man’s next-of-kin are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

    No arrests have been made at this early stage and a crime scene and road closures will be in place for some time while officers investigate.

    Chief Superintendent Dan Card, who leads policing in the local area, said: “We are deeply saddened by the events that took place last night and our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this hugely difficult time.

    “Detectives are working hard to establish the circumstances of what happened yesterday evening.

    “We understand the impact this incident will have on the local community and officers are being deployed on reassurance patrols to help answer any questions or concerns.”

    Met detectives investigating a fatal stabbing in Vauxhall have charged a man with murder.

    Abdul Kareem Fawaz, 35 (13.04.1990) of Bondway, SW8 was charged with murder and possession of a knife on Sunday, 6 July.

    He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 7 July.

    An investigation was launched after police were called to a residential address at Bondway, SW8 following reports of an altercation on Saturday, 5 July at 05:38hrs.

    A man, aged 32, was found with knife injuries. He was treated by paramedics but sadly died at the scene.

    While formal identification awaits, he can be named as Daniel Manuel. Daniel’s next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

    Two men, aged 35 and 33, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

    Fawaz has been charged as above. The 33-year-old has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

  • MIL-OSI Security: FEMA Activates in Texas Following President Trump’s Major Disaster Declaration Announcement

    FEMA will partner with Texas state and local authorities to provide resources and assist in recovery efforts

    WASHINGTON – Today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been activated in Texas following President Trump’s Major Disaster Declaration. 

    Beginning on the evening of July 3, heavy storms across the state of Texas produced rainfall totals between 5 to 15 inches and over 18 inches in some isolated areas, leading to significant flooding, especially in Kerr County located in the Texas Hill Country. 

    “Thank you, President Trump. We are currently deploying federal emergency management resources to Texas first responders, and will work closely with state and local authorities to ensure the people of Texas get the support they need as search efforts continue and recovery begins,” said Secretary Kristi Noem. “Pray for the victims, the families, and our first responders. God bless Texas.”

    The Department of Homeland Security will ensure that state and local authorities have the resources they need to lead a swift and effective response amid this tragic disaster. Secretary Noem was on the ground with Governor Abbott and local leaders on Saturday and will continue to work to make sure Texas has the resources needed to respond and recover. 

    In addition, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) is working around the clock, including overnight, on search and rescue operations. Today, USCG continues to fly two helicopters in the Llano, Texas area and is assisting with two helicopters and three C-144 airplanes equipped with thermal cameras to find more survivors. 850 people have been rescued.

    Individuals who sustained losses in the designated areas should first file claims with their insurance providers and then apply for assistance by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 1-800-621-3362 or by using the FEMA App. If you use a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, provide FEMA the number for that service.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Man arrested following vandalism of Windrush Exhibition

    Met officers have arrested a man after an exhibition honouring the Windrush generation was vandalised in Brixton.

    On Thursday, 3 July at 06:09hrs police were called to reports of vandalism at Windrush Square, Brixton.

    Officers began a swift investigation before a 24-year-old man was arrested on Saturday, 5 July on suspicion of vandalism. He was taken to a police station where he remains in custody.

    Based on enquiries carried out so far, the incident is not being treated as a hate crime. Further enquiries will take place to establish the circumstances.

    Superintendent Gabriel Cameron who leads policing in Brixton said:

    “We understand that those in the community will feel distressed about vandalism to the Windrush exhibition in Brixton.

    “We believe that this was not a hate crime, and I want to reassure anyone with concerns, that a man has now been arrested.

    “Local neighbourhood officers have been in contact with the organiser of the exhibition, and remain in the area to respond to any questions or worries that people may have.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: Man charged with murder following death of 85-year-old in Lambeth

    A man has been charged with murder following a death of an 85-year-old man in Lambeth.

    Amithraz Balgobin, 36 (27.03.1989), of Woodbourne Avenue, Lambeth, was charged with murder and possession of Class A and Class B drugs on Sunday, 6 July. He was remanded in custody to appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 7 July.

    On Friday, 4 July, officers were called at around 13:00hrs by the London Ambulance Service to an address in Churchmore Road, Streatham after an 85-year-old man was reported to have suffered serious injuries.

    Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

    A 36-year-old was arrested nearby and charged with the above.

    The victim’s next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

    Enrique Arias-Hierro, a Cuban illegal alien, was arrested by ICE on May 2, 2025. His criminal history includes convictions for homicide, armed robbery, false impersonation of official, kidnapping, and robbery strong arm. 

    On April 30, 2025, ICE arrested Cuban illegal alien Jose Manuel Rodriguez-Quinones. He has been convicted of attempted first-degree murder with a weapon, battery and larceny, and cocaine possession and trafficking.

    Thongxay Nilakout, a citizen of Laos, was arrested by ICE on January 26, 2025. Nilakout has been convicted of first-degree murder and robbery; sentenced to life confinement. 

    On May 12, 2025, ICE arrested Mexican national, Jesus Munoz-Gutierrez. He has been convicted of second-degree murder; sentenced to life confinement.

    Dian Peter Domach, an illegal alien from South Sudan, was arrested by ICE on May 8, 2024. Domach has been convicted of robbery and possession of a firearm, possession of defaced firearm, possession of burglar’s tools, and driving under the influence.

    Kyaw Mya, an illegal alien from Burma, was arrested by ICE on February 18, 2025. Mya has been convicted of lascivious acts with a child-victim less than 12 years of age; sentenced to 10 years confinement, paroled after 4 years. 

    Nyo Myint, an illegal alien from Burma, was arrested by ICE on February 19, 2025. Myint has been convicted of first-degree sexual assault involving a victim mentally and physically incapable of resisting; sentenced to 12 years confinement. Myint has also charged with aggravated assault-nonfamily strongarm.

    On May 3, 2025, ICE arrested Tuan Thanh Phan, a Vietnamese illegal alien. Phan has been convicted of first-degree murder and second-degree assault; sentenced to 22 years confinement.

    Detectives have made two arrests following the death of a man in Vauxhall.

    On Saturday, 5 July at 05:38hrs police were called to a residential address at Bondway, SW8 following reports of an altercation.

    Met officers attended the scene alongside London Ambulance Service, who treated a man in his thirties for knife injuries. Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he died from his injuries.

    His next-of-kin have yet to be informed.

    Two men, a 35-year-old [A] and a 33-year-old [B] were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

    A crime scene is in place while police investigate the circumstances.

    Palestine Action has now been proscribed by the UK Government and expressing support for them is a criminal offence in the UK.

    There are a number of events taking place in London this weekend and anyone attending should be aware that officers policing these will act where criminal offences, including those related to support of proscribed groups or organisations, are committed.

    Under the Terrorism Act 2000 (TACT), the Home Secretary may proscribe an organisation if they believe it is concerned in terrorism and it is proportionate to do so.

    Proscription makes it a criminal offence to invite or express support for a proscribed organisation through chanting, wearing clothing or display articles such as flags, signs or logos.

    It is a criminal offence to:

    • belong, or profess to belong, to a proscribed organisation in the UK or overseas (Section 11 TACT)
    • invite support for a proscribed organisation (Section 12(1A) TACT)
    • express an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organisation (Section 12(1A) TACT)
    • arrange, manage or assist in arranging or managing a meeting in the knowledge that the meeting is to support or further the activities of a proscribed organisation, or is to be addressed by a person who belongs or professes to (Section 12(2) TACT)
    • wear clothing or carry or display articles in public in such a way or in such circumstances as to arouse reasonable suspicion that the individual is a member or supporter of a proscribed organisation (Section 13 TACT)
    • publish an image of an item of clothing or other article, such as a flag or logo, in the same circumstances (Section 13(1A) TACT)

    Palestine Action has now been proscribed by the UK Government and expressing support for them is a criminal offence in the UK.

    There are a number of events taking place in London this weekend and anyone attending should be aware that officers policing these will act where criminal offences, including those related to support of proscribed groups or organisations, are committed.

    Under the Terrorism Act 2000 (TACT), the Home Secretary may proscribe an organisation if they believe it is concerned in terrorism and it is proportionate to do so.

    Proscription makes it a criminal offence to invite or express support for a proscribed organisation through chanting, wearing clothing or display articles such as flags, signs or logos.

    It is a criminal offence to:

    • belong, or profess to belong, to a proscribed organisation in the UK or overseas (Section 11 TACT)
    • invite support for a proscribed organisation (Section 12(1A) TACT)

    • arrange, manage or assist in arranging or managing a meeting in the knowledge that the meeting is to support or further the activities of a proscribed organisation, or is to be addressed by a person who belongs or professes to (Section 12(2) TACT)
    • wear clothing or carry or display articles in public in such a way or in such circumstances as to arouse reasonable suspicion that the individual is a member or supporter of a proscribed organisation (Section 13 TACT)
    • publish an image of an item of clothing or other article, such as a flag or logo, in the same circumstances (Section 13(1A) TACT)

    A murder investigation has been launched after an 85-year-old man was found dead at a property in Lambeth.

    Officers were called at around 13:00hrs on Friday, 4 July, by the London Ambulance Service to an address in Churchmore Road, Streatham. The male had sustained a number of injuries

    Despite the best efforts of emergency services to save his life, the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Formal identification has yet to take place.

    A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody.

    A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

    DCI Sarah Lee, from Specialist Crime South – who is leading on the investigation – said:

    “We are working hard to piece together the events that unfolded in Churchmore Road yesterday, and offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the victim and those affected by this tragic incident.

    “I would like to thank that those that are speaking to police and supporting the investigation already. We will continue to have an increased presence in the area whilst we continue our enquiries.

    “We are not currently looking for any other suspects.”

    TUCSON, Ariz. – Julio Cesar Aguirre, 42, of Mexico, was charged by criminal complaint on July 2, for Attempted Carjacking, Use and Discharge of a Firearm During and In Relation to a Crime of Violence, and Alien in Possession of a Firearm. Aguirre had his initial appearance in federal court in Tucson today.

    According to the complaint, Aguirre shot and killed a male driver with a 9mm caliber handgun, while attempting to carjack the victim’s Toyota Tundra on the morning of June 30, in Tucson, Arizona.

    Tucson Police Department (TPD) officers who were called to the scene spoke with witnesses before being directed to a nearby residence for a potential burglary. When they arrived at the home, the residents explained that a Hispanic male with a bleeding arm, matching Aguirre’s description, had entered their backyard and threatened them with a gun, demanding they turn over their vehicle to him. The individual later fled.

    Shortly thereafter, TPD officers located Aguirre, who was hiding in a nearby storage shed. Officers also found a Smith & Wesson 9mm caliber pistol within Aguirre’s reach. Aguirre was taken into custody without further incident.

    A search of Aguirre’s record revealed that he is a Mexican citizen, illegally present in the United States. Aguirre was arrested over 10 times from 2007 to 2013 for immigration-related crimes and was last removed from the country in 2013 pursuant to a court order.

    The federal prosecution of this case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).

                WASHINGTON – U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced that Erwin Dubose, Kamar Queen, Damonta Thompson, William Johnson Lee, and Mussay Rezene, all of Washington, D.C., and Toyia Johnson, of Rockville, MD, were found guilty today in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on all charges for the September 4, 2021 Labor Day weekend murders of 31-year-old Donetta Dyson, 24 year-old Keenan Braxton, and 37-year-old Johnny Joyner in front of 633 Longfellow Street, NW.

                On July 3, 2025, a jury found Dubose, Queen, Johnson Lee and Thompson guilty of charges including conspiracy to commit a crime of violence, three counts of first-degree murder while armed with aggravating circumstances, and three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed.  The jury found defendant Johnson guilty of tampering with physical evidence and being an accessory after the fact to assault with intent to kill while armed. The jury found defendant Rezene guilty of tampering with physical evidence and being an accessory after the fact to first degree murder while armed.

                “This senseless violence will not be tolerated in this city,” said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro. “These thugs put innocent bystanders in harm’s way, proving their total inhumanity. Today’s verdict upholds the DC U.S. Attorney’s Office’s efforts to stop these horrific crimes and we look forward to taking these criminals out of society for a significant amount of time.”

                According to the government’s evidence, at approximately 7:33 p.m., on September 4, 2021, Thompson drove Dubose, Queen and Johnson Lee, to the 600 block of Longfellow Street, NW. Those three men got out of the vehicle, crept to the corner of Longfellow and 7th Streets, NW, and began indiscriminately shooting into a neighborhood gathering. The three shooters ran back to the waiting vehicle Thompson was driving and fled the scene. The three victims, Ms. Dyson, Mr. Braxton and Mr. Joyner, were killed and another three victims sustained non-lethal gunshot wounds from the shooting.

                Shortly after the homicide, an associate of Dubose, Toyia Johnson, who rented the vehicle Thompson was driving at the time of the incident, began placing multiple 911 calls in which she falsely reported the suspect vehicle stolen. Shortly after midnight on September 6, 2021, Dubose and Rezene drove to the 4500 block of Eads Street, NE and set fire to the vehicle. The evidence established that triple homicide was in retaliation for a shooting that occurred an hour prior in the 800 block of Oglethorpe Street, NE.

                Joining the announcement was Chief Pamela Smith, of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

                In announcing the verdict, U.S. Attorney Pirro and Chief Smith commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department.   • MIL-OSI Security: FORMER EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE RESIDENT SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR CHILD PORN CRIMES

    PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – Daniel R. McCaffrey, 41, formerly of Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for the transportation of child pornography, possession of child pornography, and abusive sexual contact with a minor female who had not yet reached 12 years of age. The sentence was announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

    U.S. Attorney Heekin said: “There is no penalty severe enough for those who harm our children, and my office will continue to aggressively pursue maximum punishment for these types of crimes.  This disgusting defendant not only victimized children online, he also sexually abused a child he had access to on Eglin Air Force Base. The substantial sentence that has been imposed reflects the severity of his crimes, but it cannot make up for the grave harm he has inflicted upon the most vulnerable members of our community. I am deeply appreciative of the incredible work of the agents and investigators with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations to bring this heinous criminal to justice.”

    A jury found McCaffrey guilty of these charges after a federal trial.  Trial records reveal the defendant maintained a child pornography collection on a hidden micro SD card in his residence, where he lived with his then wife and two minor daughters.  McCaffrey’s wife was active duty United States Air Force at the time.  Multiple witnesses testified about the victimization McCaffrey personally inflicted upon the minor female to whom he had access. The child pornography he possessed reflected his penchant for minor females under the age of 12 years old.

    McCaffrey’s sentence of imprisonment will be followed by a lifetime term of supervised release and a requirement to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.  

    The case involved a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Office of Special Investigations of the United States Air Force.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys David L. Goldberg and Jessica S. Etherton.

    This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice and led by the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Divisions Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), it marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
