  • MIL-OSI USA: Attorney General James Announces 367 Guns Turned in at Schenectady Gun Buyback

    Today’s buyback event in Schenectady resulted in 367 guns being turned in, including 147 assault weapons, 92 handguns, and 65 long guns, among others. Following today’s gun buyback event, Attorney General James has helped remove more than 9,500 guns out of New York communities.

    “The State Police is proud to partner with the New York State Attorney General’s Office on this initiative, with the shared goal of preventing senseless gun-involved tragedies and improving safety in our local communities,” said New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James. “Gun buyback programs can prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands, and are a compliment to our overall strategy to reduce gun violence.”

    “This gun buyback is a safe and approachable way to remove unwanted weapons from the community,” said Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy. “I am pleased that our city was able to support the Attorney General’s Office and our other local law enforcement partners to work together on this important initiative.”

    PROSTITUTION LAW REVIEW: BENEFITS EXAGGERATED, SHORTCOMINGS IGNORED, DENIED OR HIDDEN

    Family First says that a TVNZ report on child prostitution is no surprise, given the lack of oversight of the law and a failure to formally review its many failings.

    An indepth review in 2021 of the effects of the 2003 prostitution law change revealed a huge gap between the reputation of the law and its actual impact. The detailed analysis challenged the assumption that the decriminalisation of prostitution has been a success, finding the benefits of the Prostitution Reform Act 2003 (PRA) have been exaggerated and its shortcomings ignored, denied or hidden.

    “IS IT WORKING? An evidenced-based review of the decriminalisation of prostitution in New Zealand” highlighted several significant concerns:

    Increased numbers of prostitutes. The New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective has failed to collect accurate data on the numbers of people involved in prostitution, despite being contracted by the Government to do so.

    Health and safety violations – and the reality of violence. Continuing health and safety violations include coercion into unwanted sex acts, high levels of violence, physical injury, unsafe sex, and exploitative practices such as long working hours. Violence is a risk every prostitute takes on a daily basis. Assault, rape and strangulation are not uncommon.

    What other business or sector of society in New Zealand would tolerate this – and yet the sex industry is sold as a success story. Where is the Occupational Safety and Health? No other work employment sector has a risk factor where rape is considered an inherent part of the work, and why would we want a family member to be in a type of work where there is a 35% chance of being sexually molested i.e forced to accept sex from a man they did not want to.

    Fuelled by increasingly violent pornography and a notorious drinking culture, punters frequently enjoy hurting women; overseas studies show that some men think raping a prostitute is not even possible. As a result, studies continue to document depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, dissociative disorders and bipolar disorder in women involved in prostitution.

    Yet New Zealand’s official Health and Safety Manual for prostitution normalises violence and coercion by advising prostitutes to ‘identify potentially dangerous situations,’ and to devise strategies ‘to protect themselves.’ The prostitutes’ collective stated openly in 2016 that it was impossible to wipe out violence in the industry.

    Low rates of reporting and prosecuting violations. Fewer than 20% of those who had been physically assaulted reported it to the police. Since 2003 there have been only two prosecutions for coercion – committed usually by women’s managers (pimps) – despite repeated reports that it happens frequently.

    Street workers experience 2 to 3 times more violence than other workers, and actual serious violence (rape, holding against will, and physical violence) are significantly underreported to the Police. Even the Prostitute Collective’s reports to the Ministry of Health make frequent mention of violence and coercion, often by brothel ‘managers’ (pimps).

    The black market. The industry realities of gang involvement, child exploitation and internal trafficking are largely denied or ignored by the NZPC. The Ministry for Children confirmed that under-age prostitution was not a target area and that no funding had been made available to tackle it.

    Lack of support for exiting the industry. No resources have been provided to support women who wish to exit the industry. When the law reform was being debated, it was promoted as helping to prevent entry and facilitate exiting, however the NZPC does not support that approach.

    Failure to implement recommended changes: A review of the law reform in 2008 made 28 recommendations, however, only 11 have been followed through in any way.

    Despite dangerous conditions continuing, New Zealand’s prostitution law reform has been widely lauded – particularly overseas – as beneficial for the women involved. The report identifies the main reason for this misinformation: the conversation is dominated by the New Zealand Prostitutes Collective (NZPC), a lobby group whom the Government relies on overwhelmingly for information regarding any issue related to prostitution.

    TVNZ also fell into this same trap.

    The report found that the NZPC does not provide support for those wishing to exit, has no official contact with the black market of prostitution, and plays down the industry-wide realities of violence and exploitation – denying the existence of under-age abuse and internal trafficking, rejecting the voices of exited women, and amplifying the voices of pimps.

    When implementing the law reform in 2003, Parliament was clear that its impact should be fully scrutinised. Five years later, in 2008, the Prostitution Law Reform Committee’s review of the new law recommended assessing it again in 2018. Such an assessment never happened, and the Ministry of Justice says there are no plans to review the law again –  in spite of the fact only 11 of the 28 recommendations made by the 2008 review have been implemented.

    The report makes a number of recommendations, including a focus on child sexual exploitation and trafficking; funding and resourcing exiting & prevention (including awareness of the impacts of pornography); and ultimately, the recriminalisation of brothels and pimping.

    Police were alerted to the two-vehicle crash at around 11:30am.

    Indications are people have been seriously injured.

    The road will remain closed for some time.

    Wellington Police investigating an assault on a woman in Newtown this morning are seeking information and footage from the public.

    The incident occurred on the footpath on Colombo Street at around 7:30am. The woman was approached from behind and when she turned around she was confronted by a man holding a knife. The victim found an opportunity to run from the man into a nearby address and call Police. 

    Police are offering support to the victim, after what was a deeply concerning incident.

    While the victim was not physically injured, she is understandably extremely shaken.

    Police will also ensure we increase our presence in the Newton area to provide reassurance to that community. 

    As part of our ongoing enquiries, we are seeking the public’s assistance to help identify and locate the alleged offender.

    He is reported as being in his late 20s, Caucasian, and about 5’7 [170cm] in height, with a medium build.

    He was wearing a grey jumper with a red hoodie underneath, grey pants and a hospital face mask.

    We are asking for anyone who was in the areas of Colombo Street, Rintoul Street, Adelaide Road, and Riddiford Street, between the hours of 7am and 8am today and may have seen this man, to please contact Police. 

    This male is probably a local resident and someone in our community may recognise the description provided by the victim.  We ask anyone who may know the identity of this male to also make contact with us. 

    Additionally, if anyone has CCTV, dashcam, or video footage from the mentioned areas that may have captured the man at any point, please contact Police and we can come and collect the footage from you.

    You can report information to Police via 105, either over the phone or online, referencing event number 250622/1969.

    A scene examination is ongoing following last night’s assault at Pakuranga Night Market, which left two people critically injured.

    Emergency services were called to Aylesbury Street around 6:45pm.

    Locals can expect to see an increased Police presence today as we work to gather further information about what happened.

    The two injured people have undergone surgery and are in a stable condition at hospital.

    Police continue to follow positive lines of enquiry to locate the alleged offender.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Arrests – Aggravated Burglary – Palmerston

    Northern Territory Police have arrested 5 youths after they allegedly forced their way into a Palmerston home and stole 2 vehicles early this morning.

    At 1:16am the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received information that a number of offenders armed with edged weapons had entered a home in Rosebery.

    Earlier the victims had locked themselves in a bedroom before the offenders smashed the bedroom door with a machete and demanded money and keys to 2 vehicles.

    After locating the keys the offenders left the scene and a short time later they allegedly burgled a shop at Frances Bay where they stole a large quantity of alcohol.

    General Duties officers attended the Rosebery home and a crime scene was established.

    Members from Strike Force Trident and the K9 unit were also called out before the stolen vehicles were located on police CCTV and tracked.

    Police then engaged in a short pursuit in Palmerston before the offenders stopped the vehicles and ran.

    The K9 unit then tracked the offenders to an address in Moulden where police arrested a 15-year-old male, 17-year-old male and three 16-year-old males.

    Investigations are continuing.

    Police are urging anyone who may have information about the incidents to contact police on 131 444 as soon as possible and quote reference number P25167478.

    The passenger in a crash has been critically injured following a crash on Main Road Stoke, Stoke.

    At about 5.20am on Sunday 22 June, Police were called to a car that had crashed into a trailer.

    The critically injured person has been flown to Wellington Hospital.

    The driver received minor injuries and is speaking to Police.

    Enquiries are ongoing with the Serious Crash Unit conducting a scene examination.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Update on Developments in Iran (3)

    A large nuclear complex in Esfahan has been targeted for a second time during Israel’s attacks on Iran over the past nine days, with several more buildings struck, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said today.

    The site in central Iran was first hit on 13 June when four buildings were damaged: the central chemical laboratory, a uranium conversion facility, a reactor fuel manufacturing plant, and an enriched uranium metal processing facility under construction. No increase of off-site radiation levels was reported.

    Based on information available to the IAEA today, six other buildings at the same site have now also been attacked: a natural and depleted uranium metal production facility which had not yet begun operations, a fuel rod production facility, a building with low-enriched uranium pellet production as well as a laboratory and nuclear material storage, another laboratory building, a workshop handling contaminated equipment and an office building with no nuclear material.

    The same Esfahan complex includes a centrifuge manufacturing workshop that the IAEA earlier today reported had also been hit by Israel.

    The facilities targeted today either contained no nuclear material or small quantities of natural or low enriched uranium, meaning any radioactive contamination is limited to the buildings that were damaged or destroyed.

    “This nuclear complex in Esfahan – one of the key sites of the Iranian nuclear programme – has repeatedly been attacked and extensively damaged. Based on our analysis of the nuclear material present, we don’t see any risk of off-site contamination. Nevertheless, as I have repeatedly stated, nuclear facilities should never be attacked,” Director General Grossi said.

    A person has died after a single-vehicle crash on Springs Road, between Kerwyn Avenue and Smales Road, last night.

    Emergency services were called at around 10:40pm after a vehicle rolled.

    Sadly, one person, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

    The cause of the crash is under investigation.

    Police will be ensuring support to the victim’s family.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Governor Kehoe Requests Federal Disaster Declarations for 2 Storm Systems that Resulted in Damage in Southwest Missouri

    Jefferson City — Today, Governor Mike Kehoe requested two federal disaster declarations in response to severe storms that resulted in heavy damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure in a total of eight counties in southwest Missouri this spring:

    • A U.S. Small Business (SBA) Disaster Declaration to provide low interest SBA Disasters Loans for Greene, Lawrence, and Newton counties in response to severe storms, tornadoes, heavy rains, hail, and flooding that occurred on April 29; and
    • A federal Major Disaster Declaration to provide federal assistance to Dade, Douglas, Ozark, Vernon, and Webster counties in response to the severe storms, straight-line winds, hail, heavy rains, and flooding that occurred throughout Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26.

    “The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and local partners worked in close coordination with FEMA and the Small Business Administration and once again documented large amounts of costly damage and response expenditures that meet thresholds for federal assistance to these impacted areas,” Governor Kehoe said. “Today, we are requesting a federal disaster declaration for the May 23-26 storms to rebuild damaged infrastructure in five counties and low interest loans to support homeowners, renters, and businesses in the three counties hardest by the April 29 storms.”  

    Joint preliminary damage assessments conducted by the SBA, SEMA, and local officials authorities documented that at least 80 homes and five businesses in Greene, Lawrence, and Newton counties sustained major damage and uninsured losses of more than 40% in the April 29 storms and warrant low interest disaster loans that would be made available through a Small Business Administration Disaster Declaration for physical and economic injury. President Donald Trump previously, on June 9, approved a federal Major Disaster Declaration for Public Assistance to repair and replace public infrastructure damaged in the April 29 storms, which included Greene, Lawrence and Newton counties.

    Joint preliminary damage assessments conducted by FEMA, SEMA, and local officials estimated more than $18 million in emergency response costs and damage to public infrastructure in Dade, Douglas, Ozark, Vernon, and Webster counties as a result of the May 23-26 storms. The federal Major Disaster Declaration the Governor is seeking for this period would make the FEMA Public Assistance program available to local governments and qualifying nonprofits for the repair and rebuilding of damaged roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure as well as reimbursement of emergency response costs and debris removal.

    The 5th Anniversary of Promulgation & Implementation of Hong Kong National Security Law Forum was held today, inviting renowned legal experts and academics to review the legislative intent and background of the security law, and discuss its fruitful achievements.

    CPC Central Committee Hong Kong & Macao Work Office Director and State Council Hong Kong & Macao Affairs Office Director Xia Baolong officiated at the forum’s opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech. Chief Executive and Hong Kong National Security Committee Chairman John Lee also delivered a keynote speech at the event.

    Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and National Security Adviser to the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Hong Kong SAR Zhou Ji, Vice-Chairperson of the Basic Law Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhang Yong, Head of the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR Dong Jingwei, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong SAR Cui Jianchun and Commander-in-Chief of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison Peng Jingtang also delivered speeches at the ceremony.

    He added that Hong Kong must safeguard national security in the full process of implementing the “one country, two systems” principle, ensure that the governance of the Hong Kong SAR is firmly in the hands of the patriots, be steadfast in safeguarding security and promoting development as well as effectively protect the human rights and freedoms of Hong Kong people and maintain the city’s unique position and advantages.

    Looking to the future, Mr Xia said the security law will surely safeguard the steady and far-reaching journey of the “one country, two systems” principle, enabling Hong Kong to achieve new and greater accomplishments in the grand endeavour of building a strong nation and realising national rejuvenation.

    The Chief Executive thanked Mr Xia for his heartfelt review of the positive significance of the security law in restoring Hong Kong’s stability and implementing the “one country, two systems” principle in the past five years, and for providing direction for Hong Kong’s future security and development.

    Mr Lee put forward several main points, stressing that Hong Kong must fully and accurately implement the “one country, two systems” principle and thoroughly adopt a holistic approach to national security; adhere to the solid foundation of the rule of law and leverage Hong Kong’s international advantages; cherish the stable situation and seize development opportunities; and enhance traditional advantages, focusing on reform and innovation.

    He also noted that Hong Kong should continue to safeguard national security and make use of the stable situation to develop a vibrant economy, achieving prosperous development and improving people’s livelihoods.

    Secretary for Justice Paul Lam said in his welcome remarks that the most important direction for safeguarding national security in the future is to balance the relation between security and development, strictly adhering to the principle of rule of law and the requirements of respecting and protecting human rights and freedoms set out in Articles 4 and 5 of the security law.

    This would enable people to study, work and live with peace of mind and unite to seek breakthroughs and changes, overcoming various challenges to consolidate Hong Kong’s status as an international centre and encouraging people from abroad to come to Hong Kong for development, Mr Lam added.

    There were two panel sessions in the forum, with the first session reviewing the legislative intent and background of the security law.

    In the second session, Mr Lam engaged with young leaders from various sectors to explore the vital role of the youth in safeguarding national security, and envisage further joint endeavours between the Government and the community in enhancing legal literacy.

    Concluding the forum, Deputy Secretary for Justice Cheung Kwok-kwan said that today’s event aimed to provide an in-depth and broad discussion loaded with insights and humour.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Update on Developments in Iran (2)

    A centrifuge manufacturing workshop has been hit in Esfahan, the third such facility that has been targeted in Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear-related sites over the past week, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said today, citing information available to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

    The workshop – which made the machines used to enrich uranium – was previously under IAEA monitoring and verification as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), including with installed Agency cameras.

    “We know this facility well. There was no nuclear material at this site and therefore the attack on it will have no radiological consequences,” Director General Grossi said.

    It came a few days after the IAEA on 18 June reported that the Tehran Research Center, where advanced centrifuge rotors were manufactured and tested, had been hit, as had a workshop in the city of Karaj where different centrifuge components were manufactured. There was no radiological impact, internally or externally.

    The IAEA has closely been monitoring the situation at Iran’s nuclear sites since Israel began its attacks early on 13 June, providing regular updates on military strikes on facilities in Arak, Esfahan, Karaj, Natanz and Tehran.

    Director General Grossi told the United Nations Security Council on Friday that “attacks on nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic of Iran have caused a sharp degradation in nuclear safety and security” in the country, adding: “Though they have not so far led to a radiological release affecting the public, there is a danger this could occur.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: Officers appeal for witnesses after pedestrian left in critical condition in Harrow

    Police are investigating a serious road traffic collision in South Harrow.

    On Saturday, 21 June, just after 06:00hrs, a car and pedestrian were involved in a collision on Eastcote Lane.

    The pedestrian, a 69-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital in a critical condition.

    The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries, which are ongoing.

    No arrests have been made.

    Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the collision and would like to hear from anyone in the area who witnessed what happened or might have caught dash cam footage of the incident, or the time leading up to it.

    overnor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation repealing an outdated section of New York’s election law — the new legislation now supports voters by allowing refreshments to be provided as they wait in line to exercise their civic duty. Across the State, voters will be heading to the polls to cast their ballots during a heat wave, with peak temperatures expected to reach upper 90s and “feels-like” temperatures ranging from 85-110 degrees statewide. The Governor updated New Yorkers on the severe weather alert and encouraged voters to cast their ballot during the early voting period ending June 22 — with extreme heat being the number one cause of weather-related deaths, New Yorkers need to take measures to keep cool.

    “Our democracy works best when every eligible voter has a chance to cast their ballot,” Governor Hochul said. “Providing water to voters waiting in line is a common-sense way to ensure New Yorkers have an easy, safe and secure experience in the voting booth. I’m committing to protecting the right to vote for all eligible New Yorkers.”

    The bill repeals New York State Election Law Section 17-140, which allowed for criminal penalties against individuals who provided items of small value to voters at polling sites, including food and water. The legislation removes limitations so that New York voters can be provided with the items such as water without infringing on their right to cast their vote or discouraging voters from participating in any given election.

    State Senator Zellnor Myrie said, “Voting is a civil right, not an endurance contest. With extreme heat forecast for the upcoming election, it’s important that voters at polling places can legally be given water and refreshments while they wait. I’m grateful to Governor Hochul, Assemblymember Simon and the voting rights advocates who helped advance this important bill. New York will always keep fighting to make voting easier and more accessible.”

    State Senator Kristen Gonzalez said, “With a record-setting heatwave set to peak on Election Day, this signing couldn’t have been more timely. New Yorkers shouldn’t be turned off from voting because of uncomfortable line experiences, and people who wish to provide voters with refreshments should not be criminalized. Repealing this provision makes it clear that New York puts people before red tape, and that we’re committed to building a more inclusive, participatory democracy. Thank you to Governor Hochul for signing this bill into law.”

    Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon said, “With high voter turnout and record-breaking temperatures on Primary day, New Yorkers will no longer have to worry about being arrested if someone gives them water or a snack while waiting in line. Voting shouldn’t be an endurance test. This bill removes an outdated barrier and restores common sense to exercising the franchise. I’m grateful to Senator Myrie for his partnership and to Governor Hochul for signing this bill into law.”

    In signing the bill today, Governor Hochul is building on her strong record of strengthening voting rights and expanding access to the ballot throughout her administration. In June 2022, the Governor enacted the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act, the strongest state-level voting rights act in the nation, protecting New York voters against voter dilution, suppression, intimidation and other barriers to voter participation.

    In December 2022, the Governor enacted legislation expanding the amount of time New Yorkers have to register to vote, moving the deadline for voter registration from 25 days ahead of an election to the constitutionally-allowed minimum of just 10 days ahead of an election. In September 2023, Governor Hochul signed legislation establishing a system for early voting by mail, creating a process allowing all eligible, registered New York voters the opportunity to vote early by mail in advance of an election.

    President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday participated in a mass yoga demonstration at the Uttarakhand State Police Line Maidan in Dehradun to mark the 10th International Day of Yoga, joining thousands across the globe in celebrating the ancient Indian tradition.
     
    Addressing participants after the session, the President extended her greetings to all those practising yoga worldwide. Reflecting on the global recognition of yoga since the United Nations designated June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2015, President Murmu described yoga as a shared heritage of humanity and an example of India’s growing soft power.
     
    “Yoga is not just about physical fitness, it is the art of living a healthy and balanced life,” the President said, adding that its practice contributes to the well-being of not just individuals, but also families, societies, and nations. “When a person is healthy, the family tends to remain healthy. When the family and society remain healthy, the country remains healthy.”
     
    President Murmu also underscored the deeper meaning of yoga, noting that the word itself means ‘to connect’. “The practice of yoga connects the body, mind, and soul of a person and promotes overall health. But it also fosters connection among individuals, communities, and even countries,” she said.
     
    Emphasising the preventive benefits of yoga, the President referred to the commonly accepted notion that prevention is better than cure, and urged people to adopt yoga as a daily discipline. “Yoga is very useful in prevention. I urge all to make it an integral part of life and inspire others to do the same,” she said.
     
    The mass demonstration in Dehradun was part of a nationwide celebration that saw citizens from all walks of life participating in yoga sessions at schools, public parks, and cultural institutions. This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’, aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to promote holistic wellness at both the individual and collective levels.

    CPC Central Committee Hong Kong & Macao Work Office Director and State Council Hong Kong & Macao Affairs Office Director Xia Baolong today attended the 5th Anniversary of Promulgation & Implementation of Hong Kong National Security Law Forum and visited the National Security Exhibition Gallery in Hong Kong.

    In the morning, Mr Xia attended the forum held at the Convention & Exhibition Centre and delivered a keynote speech. Chief Executive John Lee also gave a keynote address at the forum.

    Organised by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the forum aimed to review and preview the development of Hong Kong’s legal system in safeguarding national security, and enhance the understanding and awareness of various sectors of the community regarding the protection of national security.

    Legal experts, academics and young leaders participate in afternoon session of 5th Anniversary of Promulgation & Implementation of Hong Kong National Security Law Forum  
    In the afternoon session of the Forum, Mr Lam said in his welcome remarks that the most important direction for safeguarding national security in the future is to balance the relation between security and development, strictly adhering to the principle of rule of law and the requirements of respecting and protecting human rights and freedoms set out in Articles 4 and 5 of the HKNSL. This, he said, would enable members of the public to study, work and live with peace of mind and unite to seek breakthroughs and changes, overcoming various challenges to consolidate Hong Kong’s status as an international centre in several areas and encouraging people from abroad to be willing and eager to come to Hong Kong for their development.
     
    The Director of the Research Office of the HKSAR Basic Law Committee and Macao Special Administrative Region Basic Law Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Mr Yang Zhaoye, delivered a keynote speech in which he examined the significance and remarkable achievements of the implementation of the HKNSL over the past five years, as well as its key role in safeguarding Hong Kong’s prosperity, stability and people’s livelihood.
     
    There were two panel sessions in the Forum. With the theme of “The legal great wall for refining and safeguarding national security”, legal experts and academics reviewed in the first session the legislative intent and background of the HKNSL. They also had an in-depth discussion on how national security is effectively safeguarded under the compatibility and complementary of the laws including the HKNSL and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, and looked ahead to the future development of the HKSAR’s legal system for safeguarding national security.
     
    In the second session, titled “An arduous and important journey – our youth sharing the mission to safeguard national security”, Mr Lam engaged with young leaders from various sectors to explore the vital role of young people in safeguarding national security, and envisage further joint endeavours between the Government and the community in enhancing legal literacy. This, he said, would better jointly promote the concepts of “security brings prosperity” and “respecting and observing the law”, and have them rooted in the community, enabling members of the public to identify themselves closely with the harmony and stability brought about by national security, making “being patriotic and loving Hong Kong” a mainstream value among the city’s younger generation.
     
    Concluding the Forum, the Deputy Secretary for Justice, Dr Cheung Kwok-kwan, said that today’s Forum aimed to provide an in-depth and broad discussion loaded with insights and humour. He added that the number of young attendees of the Forum was believed to be the highest in the history of national security legal forums held by the Department of Justice. He said that safeguarding national security is the responsibility of every generation and must be passed from generation to generation. Dr Cheung also emphasised that Hong Kong has built legal protection measures for safeguarding national security, and that Hong Kong’s future will be bright as long as the city remains vigilant at all times, seizing the opportunity to integrate into the national development and deepening international exchanges and co-operation.

    Lawrence Wong was born in December 1972. He was elected to the Singapore Parliament in 2011 and has served successively as Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Minister for National Development, Minister for Education and Minister for Finance.

    Following news reports that the UK plans to proscribe Palestine Action, the Scottish Greens warned of the deeply authoritarian implications of using terrorism legislation to go after non-violent protesters.

    Patrick Harvie MSP said:

    “Labour’s use of terrorism legislation against non-violent protesters is deeply authoritarian, and it’s astonishing that a former human rights lawyer is doing this.

    “Palestine Action have been accused by Keir Starmer of ‘vandalism’ – which the RAF said would have no impact on their operations. It’s obviously absurd that throwing red paint on things could cause a group to be listed alongside Al Qaeda, ISIS and Russia’s Wagner Group, with membership carrying a 14-year prison sentence.

    “Human rights groups like Amnesty International have rightly raised significant concerns over this aggressive use of powers that should be reserved for only the most extreme and dangerous organisations.

    TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – United States Attorney John P. Heekin announces the last of four co-defendants was sentenced today in a large-scale conspiracy that distributed over 1000 kilograms of marijuana in Tallahassee. Tyquan Watson, 28, of Tallahassee, Florida, received 10 years in prison. His half-brother, Cleveland Blackshear, 26, of Tallahassee also received 10 years in prison. Dezaneil Cosby, 28, of Tallahassee received 5 years in prison. Shambresha Turner, 26, of Tallahassee received time-served and supervised release.

    U.S. Attorney Heekin said: “I applaud the substantial efforts of our state and federal law enforcement partners to investigate, arrest, and help bring these drug traffickers to justice. These offenses are not victimless crimes; the victims are the members of our community who experience the addiction and violence that too often follows from drug traffickers flooding our streets with this poison. My office will continue to aggressively pursue these cases to keep our communities healthy and safe.”

    Trial testimony and evidence demonstrated that Watson was purchasing hundred-pound quantities of marijuana per week from farms and brokers in California and reselling the marijuana in Tallahassee and surrounding areas. Evidence demonstrated that Watson had purchased at least 3169 pounds of marijuana between September 24, 2023, and January 10, 2024, with proceeds of at least $2.4 million during that period.

    “With dispensaries and smoke shops becoming more commonplace, people may falsely assume that marijuana is no big deal,” said Deanne L. Reuter, Special Agent in Charge of Drug Enforcement Administration’s Miami Field Division. “I assure you, DEA considers it a big deal. It’s stronger than ever and can pose a serious health risk, especially to children. We will continue to pursue marijuana peddlers with the same verve as any other illicit substance.”

    A long-term investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). On August 16, 2022, Shambresha Turner was stopped at the Panama City airport with 40 pounds of marijuana in her suitcases. Turner told officers that she was being paid to transport the suitcases. On October 13, 2022, FDLE conducted a controlled purchase of 28 pounds of marijuana from Cleveland Blackshear. During the surveillance, FDLE agents observed Blackshear obtaining the marijuana from Cosby’s residence immediately prior to the controlled purchase. Both Blackshear and Watson’s fingerprints were identified on packaging material associated with the purchased marijuana. Surveillance of Cosby’s residence between October 12, 2022, and October 28, 2022, revealed multiple people dropping off and picking up suitcases (at least 32 suitcases and 16 garbage bags). On October 28, 2022, DEA executed a federal search warrant at Cosby’s residence and seized 238 pounds of marijuana and a firearm. Watson and Cosby were arrested together on federal arrest warrants on March 11, 2024, at another residence in Tallahassee. During that arrest, law enforcement seized another 183 pounds of marijuana and a firearm.

    “This investigation sends a clear message: if you bring drug trafficking and violence into our communities, we’re coming for you,” said FDLE Tallahassee Special Agent in Charge Keith Wilmer. “Our special agents, working side-by-side with the DEA, spent countless hours on covert operations to take down this criminal network. I’m proud of their relentless work to protect Florida’s capital city and hold these offenders accountable.”

    Watson and Cosby were convicted at a jury trial on February 14, 2025. Blackshear and Turner had previously pled guilty. As part of his sentence, Watson was also ordered to forfeit $2,424,217 in drug proceeds.

    “This case is a clear example of how drug trafficking, even with substances like marijuana, is often linked to greater dangers in our community, including illegal firearms and violent crime,” said Chief Lawrence Revell of the Tallahassee Police Department. “We remain committed to working alongside our federal and state partners to disrupt these criminal networks and protect the safety of our neighborhoods.”

    These sentences were the result of a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Tallahassee Police Department, and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorneys James A. McCain and Harley Ferguson prosecuted the case.

    Governor Hochul: Thanks. Great to be back, Dan.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: It’s been a busy week and I want to begin what we saw play out on Tuesday, a city comptroller, Brad Lander, a mayoral candidate, arrested, and he was there escorting this man Edgardo out of his court date trying to get this legal status. When you went down there, what was your encounter with both the ICE officials and Mr. Lander?

    Governor Hochul: I went down there, literally had been in Little Haiti, visiting the community, a community that’s under siege. I got the word of what happened and I just declared it as unacceptable in a different word, but I said it was very unacceptable. I went down there, and I went into the federal building, went up to the ninth floor, and they were holding him in this area behind a number of guards. I mean there was ICE agents there, and no one else was around. I just said, “I’m not leaving until Mr. Lander walks out with me.”

    And I stood there, and I talked to people, and I brought in my Homeland Security team and others to be reinforcements and to find out what’s going on. Eventually, they went and told him and he said he overheard them saying “the Governor’s here, we’ll let you go.” So I walked out with him, we went down to the street.

    He was reacquainted with his wife, Meg, who I had seen on the street and gave her a hug because you don’t know what’s happening. Are they going to press some, made up, trumped up charges, literally trumped up charges or what, but they ended up saying yesterday there were no charges being brought. It’s just to see someone like a Brad Lander, I mean, he knows he’s got attention on his case.

    He’s got a Governor coming down there. He’s got all the resources he needs, attorneys, and it just puts a spotlight on all the people who are not an elected official.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: For example, Edgardo.

    Governor Hochul: Yes.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Where is he?

    Governor Hochul: We don’t know, I mean, we don’t know and here’s what I called out. It’s so cruel. People are sitting ducks. They came here with legal status, temporary protected status seeking asylum. They came here during the Biden administration. You can agree or disagree with that policy, but they’re here and they’re following the rules. They’re showing up to a court date that they’re told to come for, go before a judge, and while they’re in there their status is revoked. They walk out, and they’re told they’re criminals now, and ICE just grabs them.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: So let me ask you this, is there anything that you or the state can do in a moment like this to protect those who are simply following the law? They get a court date, they show up. The city’s guidance from Mayor Adams has been, go to your court cases, go to school, go to hospitals, and if anybody shows up from ICE, ask for a warrant, which is what Mr. Lander did, and now they’re saying that he didn’t see the warrant.

    Governor Hochul: That’s right, that’s exactly right. They’re not even following the rules that are in play here, but we’ve provided legal services and funding, fifty million dollars. I increased it significantly in our budget knowing that this was happening. We have great coalitions, the Immigration Coalition and others that are stepping up and getting the money out to people, training people on what to do–but this is an unprecedented time in American history. It truly, truly is.

    When people who are following the rules, following the laws, taking care of people as home healthcare aides. 160 Haitians losing their jobs because who’s going to take care of the moms and dads and the grandma and grandpas who need this care. So they’re not even looking at the impact of the loss of these people who are workers.

    The loss to our tax base, the loss to our community, and so I will help every day of the week with criminals. I said that during eight hours of grueling hearing testimony in Congress, which was just a farce to even have to drag governors like myself down there, but we did it, we endured it, put up with a lot of crap.

    But we said we do help with law enforcement when we want to remove criminals, people that are dangerous, and this is not what they’re doing. They are removing law abiding people who literally walk on their own into a courthouse.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Let me ask you about that testimony, right you brought it up, you were there for hours and you were grilled by both Democrats and Republicans. I guess the question is have you spoken to President Trump about what you’re talking about going after the worst of the worst. You were pressed on sanctuary city status, but the President had campaigned on going after the worst of the worst. What have those conversations been?

    Governor Hochul: No, I had them with him before and I was actually going to reach out again, but he has been distracted with the situation in the Middle East, and so I waited, but I will have that conversation again. I had it in the Oval Office. I had Kristi Noem sitting next to me when I had this conversation. I said, “we, as part of our policies, we’ll help you go after the criminals.” The ones not a crime of crossing the border. That’s not what we’re talking about. That can be enforced civilly.

    You do your civil enforcement, that’s not our job. I will help you if you’ve got evidence that someone’s a member of a gang or human trafficking or running drugs or guns. We don’t want them in our streets either. I’ve worked really hard for the last four years to make our streets safer, and we’re seeing the results. So I’m here for that, but why are we being asked to divert our resources to help you do your job, which I don’t even agree with.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: And speaking of resources, we’re seeing what’s going to play out in Los Angeles and California right now with the National Guard being brought in because of these issues of protesters are on the street right, and Mayor Adam said that he sent his deputy mayor and his chief of police, chief of department to meet with President Trump, play golf and persuade him not to send the National Guard here. The Mayor says he spoke to you about that. Were you okay with them meeting on a golf course to talk about this?

    Governor Hochul: That’s how they do their business. I’m not going to question it, that’s not my decision, but I’m having the same conversations. I want them to know, first of all, I’m the commander in chief of the New York State National Guard, I am, and there are only extreme cases when the President can usurp that.

    Those cases were not called for in Los Angeles. What I’m saying is I believe in our law enforcement, I support them. Our NYPD is 32,000 people strong. They’re some of the best trained in the world, they can handle crowds. So you’re basically saying, the Trump administration is saying, “We don’t trust you law enforcement to do your jobs, so we’re going to kind of bigfoot you and show our force.” It’s unnecessary.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: But can you stop it?

    Governor Hochul: I will not be cooperating in that effort. But I will demonstrate that first of all, we can peacefully assemble. That happened, with millions of people, last weekend. Let’s put a spotlight on that and what we don’t want, is to be baited into what Donald Trump wants. He wants nothing more than to see more police cars burning and turned upside down and violence in the streets.

    Now, the concentration in Los Angeles was a smaller area. It was exaggerated. Most of the city was just fine, but he wants that in Chicago and New York. He basically said that. So we are ready for it, but no one should take the bait. Don’t take the bait and give him what he wants.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: This is all playing out during a political season here in New York with the mayor’s race, and they’re all using this as part of their campaigns. Now, we just had a poll come out from Marist that shows Andrew Cuomo is upping the polls here. You served as his Lieutenant Governor and you’d potentially have to work with him as mayor. When’s the last time you spoke to Mr. Cuomo?

    Governor Hochul: A few months. But I’ll tell you this, the voters will decide. I have such respect for the voters of New York City, that I will work with whomever they want me to, and if it’s mutual, if the next mayor. Or the current mayor — whoever it is — wants to work with me and is willing to, they will see the benefits of what I showed Mayor Adams for four years and changing the whole dynamic between the conflict that was always there between Albany and New York City. It doesn’t have to be that way.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: One of them is Zohran Mamdani — who says that he would need to work with Albany — and you — very closely, and his whole campaign is based on raising taxes, which he says that he can get you to be on board with. Would you be on board with that?

    Governor Hochul: No, I’m not raising taxes on people at a time when affordability is the big issue. I’m actually cutting middle class taxes.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Even on the wealthy?

    Governor Hochul: I don’t want to lose any more people to go to Palm Beach. We’ve lost enough. We had a major out-migration when Republicans in Congress eliminated the state local tax deduction.

    New Yorkers paid $72 billion more to the federal government over the last seven years because Republicans didn’t stand up and they need a full restoration of this. So that was a driver. I don’t want to give anyone else who’s supporting our economy and their taxes are appreciated and their support for the philanthropies, etcetera. Driving them to Florida does not help us. So let’s be smart about this.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: I want to talk about the other race, and that’s the race for governor. Lieutenant Governor, your lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, has announced he’s running against you. What does that mean? Is he tasked with anything right now by you as he now looks to take your job?

    Governor Hochul: No, he decided to go in a different direction. But I’m not focused on that at all. I really —

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: But he’s your Lieutenant Governor, so you don’t give him any responsibilities?

    Governor Hochul: No, he’s determined to take another course. So he’s basically — he collects his paycheck.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Should he stand down?

    Governor Hochul: A lot of people have said that. I will tell you — I will focus on campaigning when the time comes. I’m very competitive. It’s my 16th election. I know how to win, and I will win. But right now, with so much going on, I have to focus on Washington. I have to focus on this big ugly bill, which is going to eviscerate health care institutions everywhere I’ve been visiting.

    We just did a billion dollars to help SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, giving central Brooklyn the high quality health care they deserve. And what’s happening at the same time we’re doing this, the federal government stands to take $13.5 billion from our health care systems. I’ve got that fight. I’ve got a fight on tariffs, which are hurting our state tremendously, especially in the North Country and also what’s happening with immigration. So I’m very busy doing my job.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: You’re saying others are calling for him to step down, but you don’t think — you’re not saying it.

    Governor Hochul: I’m not — I don’t really care.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: I want to talk about the big issue right now in terms of the budget, right? Because it is budget season and there’s so much to talk about. But I do want to talk about local issues and what it affects New Yorkers. And come next year, $13.5 million to enact a cell phone ban in schools. And my curiosity is how do you implement that, right? Because on paper, yes, you can say everyone’s — but it’s up to the individual schools to follow through. So how do you make it happen?

    Governor Hochul: Oh, we are aggressively working on this to educate all the school districts, educate the parents. Law enforcement plays a role in this too, because they need to persuade the parents that the most dangerous thing, if there is an incident on the school grounds, a shooting, for example, that it’s not safe for their kids to be reaching for their cell phone and videoing it.

    So I’m really excited about this when I go around the city, more people have raised this is something they’re really happy we did. We’re the largest state in America to have a full ban morning until nighttime. Your little girl will grow up in a world where she never even knew you could have a cell phone.

    And she’ll be smarter and more — have better mental health outcomes because our kids today are under such stress. And as a mom, I’m making sure we’re doing everything we can. This is going to be a game changer.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Yeah. But if a school says, “I don’t want to do it.”

    Governor Hochul: No, they have to do it.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: They have to do it.

    Governor Hochul: It’s the law. This is why it took me a year to get this done. There’s a lot of opposition. And I said, “We need this done.” Every school has to comply with this. Make sure that parents know how to reach their kids during the day. Just like we did in the old days. We used to call the office and you have to have the phone away from the kids, not in their pockets.

    Don’t let them store it where they want. You have to have your own policy. I’m not going to dictate that. But from morning until school day ends, even during lunch and breaks, gym class because they need to start making friends again. They need to be kids again. We’re giving them their childhood back.

    Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Can we bring back snow days?

    Governor Hochul: I’m from Buffalo. Don’t tell me about that — we went to school during so many blizzards. They thought it was a sign of weakness if you took a snow day. No, we always went to school during blizzards.

  • MIL-OSI Security: NATO and Armenia strengthen cooperation in support to defence reform

    Representatives from NATO’s Defence and Security Cooperation Directorate met with Armenia’s Deputy Chief of Defence, Major General Arthur Yeroyan, and the leadership of the Armenian Armed Forces’ education institutions in Yerevan, on 9 and 10 June 2025. Following a request from Armenia’s Ministry of Defence, a team of experts of NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP) conducted an assessment of the Armenian military education system, earlier this year. During the visit in June the DEEP team presented the assessment’s results and recommendations to the Armenian Deputy Chief of Defence.

    Armenia is currently developing a new military education concept and doctrinal basis for its armed forces, in line with Western standards. NATO and Armenia will prioritise their cooperation on doctrine development, the approach to combined arms, strategic leadership, and on the drafting of a human resources concept for all different officer ranks and career paths.

    NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme is supporting the continued professionalisation of the Armenian security and defence structures, through institution building and faculty development activities, including by modernising the Language Centre and establishing an eLearning Centre in the national Military Academy. Additional efforts are being carried out to consolidate the National Defence Research University as strategic level military education institution and to boost the development of a NCO corps, with the aim to enhance the ability of Armenian personnel to work alongside NATO. 

    Armenian Deputy Chief of Defence, Major General Arthur Yeroyan, underscored that the support provided by NATO through its Defence Education Enhancement Programme is key for the ongoing modernisation efforts of the Armenian forces and defence institutions.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Deputy Minister pays tribute to journalist Aserie Ndlovu

    The passing of Aserie Ndlovu has robbed South Africa of an icon who still had much to offer and contribute, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Kenny Morolong said on Saturday.

    “The passing of Mr Ndlovu has robbed our nation of an icon, who still had so much to offer and contribute. Primarily, as government, we are saddened not only by his passing, but also the way he was brutally killed.  

    “We are confident that our criminal justice system will ensure that those who are responsible for their killing get harshest punishment as possible,” said the Deputy Minister.

    The Deputy Minister was speaking at the funeral service of the journalist and founder of Capital Live FM, in Mahlabathini, Mpumalanga.

    Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli went missing in February this year with police having discovered two lifeless bodies believed to be that of the couple in May.  

    Law enforcement authorities had been investigating the couple’s disappearance.

    The Deputy Minister had previously visited the family as investigations into the couple’s disappearance continued.

    “Government calls on all South Africans to join us as we pay tribute to a life well lived.  In this time of great sadness, the thoughts and prayers of the nation are with both families who lost their loved ones. 

    “We thank the family for opening your doors for us to engage and offer support from the time both Ndlovu and his partner were reported missing up until we learned about their tragic death,” he told mourners attending the service.

    He added that Ndlovu made significant contributions to democracy by informing and educating the public through his work.

    “Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu has a long-standing good working relationship with [the] GCIS [Government Communication and Information System] and the entire government communications system.

    “He collaborated with GCIS and government at large, through a range of activities in his profession as a community media practitioner, ranging from covering government activities such as media briefings, national days, and other key government initiatives.” 

    Deputy Minister Morolng said the late journalist was passionate about developing future journalists and media entrepreneurs in the local media sphere.

    “Mr Ndlovu also used to play a part in using his station working with government to connect other community radio stations in transmitting government messages through various programmes.

    “As government, particularly the government communications sector, we feel robbed of one of our own from the Fourth Estate, which is a pillar of our democracy tasked with speaking truth to power,” he explained.

    Ndlovu was also described as someone who understood “through his work that information is power and that an informed citizenry is the bedrock of democracy.”

    “Aserie, understood that journalism is a bridge between government and citizens,” said the Deputy Minister in his tribute adding that the community journalist also held those in power in the local municipality to account.  

    “In the age of misinformation and disinformation, community journalists can be guardians of truth and trust using local verified sources. In moments of crisis and disaster, community media practitioners become part of the first responders; providing life -saving local information,” he said.

    The Deputy Minister said the void created by the sudden and tragic death of Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli is still hard to grasp. 

    Earlier this week, a memorial service was held at the GCIS to pay tribute to Ndlovu and Mdhluli.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Port Noarlunga South home break-in

    Police are investigating a break-in at Port Noarlunga South this morning and have released CCTV of the suspects and their getaway scooter.

    Three unknown males attended an address in Aldam Road, Port Noarlunga South about 8.30am on Saturday 21 June.  One suspect waited outside on a scooter while two males entered the home and confronted the four occupants.

    Three victims were assaulted during the incident and sustained minor injuries.

    The offenders stole a Playstation 5 and two wallets before getting back on the silver and black scooter, described as similar to a Yamaha NMAX 155, and heading west along Aldam Road.

    They were all dressed in black, with their faces covered.

    Southern District CIB detectives are investigating.
