  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Hassan Introduces Bipartisan Resolution Recognizing September 20 as National Concussion Awareness Day

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New Hampshire Maggie Hassan
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Bob Casey (D-PA), and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) are recognizing today, Friday, September 20th, as National Concussion Awareness Day. Senator Hassan has spearheaded Concussion Awareness Day since her time as Governor of New Hampshire, following the advocacy of Brooke Mills, a 25-year-old Granite Stater who experienced a life-altering concussion during her high school years.
“Every year, many Granite Staters and Americans experience concussions, yet the full scope of these injuries often goes unrecognized,” said Senator Hassan. “This resolution to recognize National Concussion Awareness Day is an important step in our ongoing efforts to educate the public about traumatic brain injuries, from how they happen to how to recover. I am grateful to Granite Stater Brooke Mills and all the advocates who continue to spread awareness about concussions and push for better treatment.”
“Starting the conversation about concussions is more than just a campaign; it’s a commitment to protecting ourselves and those we care about. Every day, we have the opportunity to raise awareness, share stories, and support one another. I founded National Concussion Awareness Day because I believe that through open dialogue, we can break the stigma, empower individuals to seek help, and create a culture of not hiding this invisible injury. Let’s make it a priority to talk about concussions today and every day, because every voice matters and every conversation can make a difference,” said Brooke Mills.
Former Miss New Hampshire Brooke Mills first had the idea for National Concussion Awareness Day after suffering a life-altering concussion during her freshman year of high school. Following her advocacy, when Senator Hassan was Governor, Hassan marked Concussion Awareness Day in New Hampshire in 2016. Then she brought this effort to the Senate, introducing the National Concussion Awareness Day starting in 2019. In recognition of Brooke’s impactful work, Senator Hassan honored her as a Granite Stater of the Month that same year.
The resolution that Senator Hassan introduced recognizes September 20, 2024, as National Concussion Awareness Day, commends organizations that raise awareness about concussions, and encourages further research and prevention efforts.
Read the text of the resolution here or below:
Supporting the designation of September 20, 2024, as ‘‘National Concussion Awareness Day’’.
    Whereas mild traumatic brain injury, otherwise known as a concussion, is an important health concern for children, teens, and adults;
Whereas, according to information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—
    there are as many as 1,600,000 to 3,800,000 sports-related concussions annually;
    as many as 5,300,000 individuals live with the long-term effects of a traumatic brain injury;
    between 2010 and 2016, an estimated 2,000,000 children under age 18 visited an emergency department because of a traumatic brain injury sustained during sports- or recreation-related activities;
    each year an estimated 283,000 children seek care in emergency departments in the United States for a sports- or recreation-related traumatic brain injury, with traumatic brain injuries sustained in contact sports accounting for approximately 45 percent of those visits;
research suggests that many children with a traumatic brain injury do not seek care in emergency departments or do not seek care at all, resulting in a significant underestimate of prevalence; and
    approximately 15 percent of all high school students in the United States self-reported 1 or more sports-or recreation-related concussions within the preceding 12 months;
    Whereas the seriousness of concussions should not be minimized in athletics, and return-to-play and return-to-learn protocols can help ensure recovery;
Whereas concussions can affect physical, mental, and social health, and a greater awareness and understanding of proper diagnosis and management of concussions is critical to improved outcomes; and

    commends the organizations and individuals that raise awareness about mild traumatic brain injury;
encourages Federal, State, and local policymakers to work together—
to raise awareness about the effects of concussions; and
to improve the understanding of proper diagnosis and management of concussions; and
encourages further research and prevention efforts to ensure that fewer individuals experience the most adverse effects of mild traumatic brain injury.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Q&A: Healthy Moms and Babies

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Iowa Chuck Grassley
Q: How are you supporting families who are struggling with infertility?
A: According to recent federal statistics, more than 13 percent of women under age 49 are affected by infertility. Coping with infertility, miscarriages and stillbirths takes a painful, emotional toll on families. I’m co-sponsoring legislation that affirms support for those facing infertility and fosters solutions to make meaningful medical advances in reproductive care. The Reproductive Empowerment and Support through Optimal Restoration (RESTORE) Act would expand access to restorative reproductive medicine within existing federal programs. Americans struggling with the anguish and uncertainty of infertility deserve better testing, diagnoses and treatment that a whole-of-government approach can bring. As a co-sponsor of the RESTORE Act, I support marshalling federal resources to promote research on the leading causes of infertility and provide training for medical professionals to learn how to diagnose and treat infertility. Let’s do what’s possible to ensure aspiring parents have information about evidence-based treatments to address underlying medical issues related to their fertility challenges.
Unfortunately, the issue of reproductive health has been turned into a political football during this presidential election year. Specifically, the Democrat Majority Leader has scheduled votes twice in four months to manufacture a crisis about access to in vitro fertilization (IVF), which is not in question. Democrats intentionally loaded up their bill with poison pills like expensive programs and mandates that go well beyond simply protecting access to IVF while rejecting Republican alternatives to further support families utilizing IVF. The Democrat Majority is needlessly creating anxiety for people who already shoulder burdens of loss and despair. The RESTORE Act seeks to beef up the medical community’s focus on underlying reproductive health issues, such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids and more. Treating underlying conditions causing infertility is a common sense solution. Learning more about the causes of infertility will help find cures and answer the prayers of so many Americans who want to be called “Mom” and “Dad.” Although IVF is one example of the miracles of modern medicine, we also must pursue robust holistic approaches to reproductive care and infertility, including education, testing, diagnosis and treatment. Let’s also be clear on one important fact: Access to IVF is not in jeopardy. It’s legal in all 50 states. I know many families, including pro-life families, who have benefitted from IVF. I support IVF and am proud to advocate for pro-life, pro-family and pro-mother policies in the United States Senate.
Q: What other priorities are you pushing to improve maternal health?
A: This summer Rep. Ashley Hinson and I scored a victory for expectant moms across America when our bill to help reduce stillbirths was signed into law. Tragically, approximately 21,000 babies are stillborn every year in the United States. The Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act paves the way for Title V funds of the Social Security Act to be used for stillbirth prevention activities and programs. It will help curb infant mortality by enabling evidence-based stillbirth initiatives to qualify for federal funding. The tragedy of losing a baby to stillbirth after 20 weeks of pregnancy delivers immeasurable pain and heartache to families. What’s more, women who experience a stillbirth are more likely to die and have increased morbidity. Our bill will help improve maternal health and save babies by expanding resources for health care providers to proactively talk to their patients about stillbirth prevention strategies. I give a lot of credit to Iowa grassroots advocates for their leadership and commitment to help get this bill across the finish line. It’s an example of government of, by and for the people. For the third consecutive year, I co-sponsored the bipartisan National Stillbirth Prevention Day resolution to recognize those who have endured loss through stillbirth. Raising public awareness will lend urgency to public health efforts to help save lives.
As an outspoken advocate for rural health care, I’m aware of the challenges faced by expectant moms living in rural areas to access prenatal and OB care. A lack of obstetric services and shortages in the health care workforce put patients and quality of care in rural areas at risk. I’ve introduced the Healthy Moms and Babies Act to address the maternal health crisis that particularly affects women of color and mothers living in rural America. In Iowa, more than 20 labor and delivery units have closed in the last decade. I’ll continue working with stakeholders to push for community-driven solutions and supports, including expanding telehealth services. My Healthy Moms and Babies Act would expand telehealth access for expectant and postpartum mothers to help lower mortality rates and improve patient outcomes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 80 percent of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. I’ll continue pushing at the federal level to improve access to high-quality care for moms and babies, including my long-time support for the Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program.
National Stillbirth Prevention Day is September 19, 2024. Sen. Grassley delivered remarks at a reception hosted by Iowa-based Healthy Birth Day, Inc. to celebrate congressional progress on stillbirth awareness and prevention measures.

  • MIL-OSI Global: What White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf can learn from the last team to lose 120 games

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Nick Hirshon, Associate Professor of Communication, William Paterson University

New York Mets manager Casey Stengel and outfielder Jim Hickman celebrate after breaking their 17-game losing streak in 1962. Bettmann/Getty Images

Bad press has engulfed Jerry Reinsdorf.

As owner of the Chicago White Sox, Reinsdorf heads a franchise with the most single-season losses in baseball history. The White Sox also set team records with a 21-game losing streak and losses in 20 straight series. In one game, a mundane pop fly went viral after two players collided, the ball rolled away, and three runs scored. In another, the team’s second baseman was injured by a ball to the face because he wasn’t paying attention to the catcher’s throw during warmups between innings.

Reporters have accused Reinsdorf of a “stunning” lack of accountability and “perverse revenge” against fans who want him to sell the team.

The negative media attention isn’t surprising. When a team fails so spectacularly, sports writers inevitably take swings at the owner, with one notable exception: the last team to lose 120 games, the 1962 New York Mets.

The Mets owner didn’t just manage to escape blame from the press.

She became the toast of the town.

    ‘Mother of the Mets’

Joan Whitney Payson had a decidedly elitist background. She grew up in one of the world’s wealthiest families, the benefactors of art museums and opera houses. She collected priceless paintings by the masters – Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, Matisse. Her grandfather had been secretary of state, and her brother was the U.S. ambassador to the U.K.

But Payson did share one trait with the American working class: a love of baseball. She grew up a rabid fan of the New York Giants and eventually came to own 10% of stock in the team. Like many New Yorkers, she was crushed in 1957 when the Giants relocated to California, a move she tried desperately to prevent. That same year, the Giants’ rival, the Brooklyn Dodgers, also headed west.

Joan Whitney Payson reads the coverage of yet another Mets loss.

A city that had three thriving teams was down to just one: the Yankees, a longtime adversary that many Giants and Dodgers fans couldn’t bring themselves to root for.

Payson gave New Yorkers another option. Three years after the Giants and Dodgers left town, Payson bought an expansion club that was set to play in Queens. Anticipation for the new team energized the city. But in 1962, the first woman to purchase a sports team – a distinction that could have made her a target of the all-male press – led the Mets to a disastrous record: 40 wins against 120 losses.

In many ways, the 1962 Mets were worse than the 2024 White Sox. They made a whopping 210 errors; the White Sox will finish with half that many. Two Mets pitchers lost 20 games each; no one on the White Sox will come close. The White Sox outpaced the Mets in a range of categories, from doubles to stolen bases.

I research the history of sports media, and a few years ago, I set off to find out how the press covered Payson. I figured she must have been prime fodder for the tough New York media. When I was growing up, the Yankees and Mets never sank to the depths that Payson’s team did, yet the press still rebuked Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and the Mets’ Fred Wilpon, whose ownership group bought the team from the Payson family in 1980.

I spent many hours scanning newspapers on microfilm and digital databases. I made a trip to the Yale University archives to sift through Payson’s papers, and I combed her file at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, too.

I was certain reporters must have zeroed in on a few of the 1962 Mets’ many failings and pinned them on the owner.

But despite months of research, I didn’t find any negative coverage about the woman the press dubbed the “Mother of the Mets.”

    A partner of the press

It’s much easier finding unfavorable stories about Reinsdorf. The owner of the White Sox since 1981, he is known for blowing off reporters. Even amid the national focus on the White Sox, he has not spoken to journalists for more than a year.

Jerry Reinsdorf, right, has had a prickly relationship with the press since buying the Chicago White Sox in 1981.
    Focus on Sport/Getty Images

Payson, meanwhile, treated the press like partners.

The winter before her team’s inaugural season, she made an unprecedented gesture: inviting sports writers to her Manhattan duplex to help select the name of the team they would be covering. Payson wanted to go with Meadowlarks, a tribute to the team’s future home in Flushing Meadows. But the writers preferred Mets, an homage to a 19th-century New York team whose four-letter brevity worked well in headlines. In a decision that’s hard to imagine Reinsdorf making, Payson conceded to the press.

Later, during that 17-game skid, she took out newspaper ads thanking reporters in “the most tolerant city in the nation” for dispelling the notion “that New York is a cynical sports city, settling only for a winner.”

To be fair to the White Sox owner, Payson benefited from conditions that Reinsdorf cannot control.

Beat writers gave Payson grace after Major League Baseball forced her to draft the Mets roster from a pool of unwanted players from other clubs. Many of those journalists had lost work in 1957 when the Dodgers and Giants decamped for California. “These were very accomplished for their times guys who suddenly didn’t have teams to cover,” Robert Lipsyte, then a cub reporter at The New York Times, told me in an oral history interview in 2020. Payson gave these underworked sports writers a chance to cover the big leagues again.

In return, the Mets owner elicited effusive praise. In his book “Can’t Anybody Here Play This Game?” journalist Jimmy Breslin wrote that Payson “could be the best person to come into baseball in our time.”

No one at the Chicago Tribune or Sun-Times makes the same lofty claim for Reinsdorf.

    Knives out?

After her team’s 120-loss campaign, Payson entered the offseason as a media darling. The press appreciated her good nature and accessibility for interviews even as the Mets floundered.

In comparison, Reinsdorf’s combination of on-field futility and off-field coolness to the Chicago media has assured him a spot in the annals of infamy.

With two and a half weeks to go in the season, Reinsdorf put out a statement acknowledging “this year has been very painful for all” and promising that he will “have more to say at the end of the season.”

At this point, what Reinsdorf says probably won’t matter much. Rather than learning from Payson’s approach, he has made it easy for the press to cast him as a villain.

Nick Hirshon does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organization that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

Source: China State Council Information Office 2

More than 800 people have received criminal punishment and over 200 people have faced administrative penalties for chaotic behavior of “fan circles” this year, according to China’s Ministry of Public Security.
“Fan circles,” or “Fanquan” in Chinese, refer to organized online communities focused on specific celebrities. Originally centered around the entertainment industry, these groups are now common in the sports field as well. Such fan groups often engage in organized activities such as purchasing products endorsed by their idols and upvoting idol-related content online.
In recent years, some fan circles have been criticized for overzealous behavior, which sometimes leads to online conflicts or even cyberbullying, infringing on celebrities’ privacy and inducing excessive consumption.
Since this year, Chinese police have investigated over 700 fan circle-related cases involving illegal and criminal acts such as fake engagement by fan groups on social networks, stalking, selling personal information, and cyberbullying, Shi You, an official with the ministry, said at a press conference on Friday.
During the Paris Olympic Games, the police had taken strong measures to investigate several cyberbullying cases related to fan communities, which garnered widespread attention and support from the public, Shi said.
In August, the ministry published four typical cases of cyberbullying and slandering against Chinese Olympians. Both the Chinese Table Tennis Association and the Chinese Gymnastics Association voiced support for the crackdown and condemned chaotic fan circle behavior that had an “extremely negative influence” on athletes, coaches and other staff members.
Shi said that the ministry will continue cracking down on illegal fan circle activities, and reminded fans to engage in rational and civilized fandom practices.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Reed Congratulates Tennis Great Billie Jean King for Winning the Congressional Gold Medal

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Rhode Island Jack Reed

WASHINGTON, DC – Recognizing tennis great Billie Jean King’s groundbreaking contributions both on and off the court, President Joe Biden signed legislation into law this week honoring Billie Jean King, 80, as the first individual female athlete to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) cosponsored bipartisan legislation (S. 2861) to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Billie Jean King, a tennis legend and American icon who was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island in 1987 and presented with her official Hall of Fame ring in 2015.

Senator Reed congratulated King, stating: “A champion on and off the court, Billie Jean King was known for having a great serve and serving as a great role model and advancing equality.  She transcends sports and is someone who has blazed a trail and leveled the playing field to give others more opportunities than she herself had.  I congratulate her for earning this well-deserved achievement and I know she’ll continue to serve as an ambassador for the sport and an inspiration for future generations.”

Throughout her career, Billie Jean King’s outstanding play and groundbreaking leadership and advocacy helped advance equal rights for women in athletics, education, and society at large. King was instrumental in securing equal prize money in men’s and women’s tennis at the U.S. Open, spearheaded the formation of the Women’s Tennis Association, and brought worldwide attention to pay equality throughout her career and in her “Battle of the Sexes” match against Bobby Riggs.

The U.S. Open, which began in 1881 as a men’s-only game on grass courts in Newport, Rhode Island, is now held annually in Flushing, Queens, at the U.S. Tennis Association’s (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Thanks in large part to the unrelenting activism of Billie Jean King, the U.S. Open became the first sporting event to offer equal prize money to female and male competitors.

Over the course of her career, King captured 39 Grand Slam tennis titles in singles (12), doubles (16) and mixed doubles (11).

Commissioned by Congress, the Congressional Gold Medal has been awarded as an expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions to society.  Prior to Billie Jean King earning the award this year, it had been bestowed upon several individual athletes, including Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, Roberto Clemente, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson, Willie O’Ree, Greg LeMond, Larry Doby, Joe Louis, as well as the 1980 U.S. Olympic team.

Once again, Billie Jean King blazed a trail that others will undoubtedly follow.

Union Minister Sh. Nitin Gadkari’s Vision for Amrit Mahotsav Park Takes Shape: A Bird Habitat and Recreation Space Near Nagpur’s Ring Road

Sh. Nitin Gadkari inaugurates Oxygen Bird Park in Nagpur, Maharashtra

Eco-Friendly Park Combines Bird Habitat and Recreation Across 8.23 Hectares, with 2.5 Hectares Reserved for Social Forestry

Bird Park to Feature Rare Trees, Lotus Pond, Reed Bed, Bambusetum, and Palm Plantation to Attract Birds and Enhance Ecology

Posted On: 28 SEP 2024 4:59PM by PIB Delhi

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Sh. Nitin Gadkari inaugurated Oxygen Bird Park (Amrit Mahotsav Park) along the Nagpur-Hyderabad National Highway-44 in Nagpur, Maharashtra today.

Oxygen Bird Park (Amrit Mahotsav Park) is an eco-initiative developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) near Jamtha, along the Nagpur-Hyderabad National Highway-44. Covering a total area of 8.23 hectares, including 2.5 hectares dedicated to social forestry, the park is designed to serve both as a natural bird habitat and as a recreational space for locals and tourists. The project, which integrates environmental sustainability and recreational facilities, was formally approved in March 2023 with a development cost of ₹14.31 crores.

The idea for the park originated from a suggestion by Union Minister Sh. Nitin Gadkari to RO Nagpur to develop a Amrit Mahotsav Park on NHAI land parcel for observing the variety of birds found in this part of Central India as well as recreation of citizens. The vision was to establish a green space provide a safe and natural habitat for a wide variety of bird species. Located in an environment designed to mimic natural ecosystems, the park aims to conserve both local and migratory bird populations. This initiative has been included as an additional work in the broader infrastructural project of developing a four-lane standalone ring road around Nagpur city, with the park located at the Clover Leaf intersection near the Jamtha International Cricket Stadium.

    Background

    Ecological Features of the Park:

The bird park will feature several distinct areas aimed at conservation and ecological enhancement.

Rare and Endangered Trees Area: This section will showcase and preserve rare and endangered tree species native to Central India. Species include the Vulnerable Indian Bael, Gum Karaya and the Endangered Yellow Flame of the Forest.

Lotus/Lily Pad Pond: The pond will be home to various lotus and water lilies, providing habitat for water birds and recharging underground aquifers. It will also create a microhabitat with increased humidity. Since the waterbody is deep it has the potential to attract both resident and migrant ducks. The migrant ducks attracted are both diving ducks like pochards and dabbling ducks.

Reed Bed: Located behind the pond, this reed bed will provide an ideal habitat for birds such as waterhens, moorhens, and reed warblers, especially during migration.

Bambusetum: This area will feature native Indian bamboo species. Bamboo will help reduce dust and noise pollution, absorb vehicle emissions, and improve soil quality through its leaf litter.

Plantation Area: Extending beyond the 6-hectare park, this area will include native tree species and shrubs. It will attract wildlife, reduce noise and dust, and enhance air quality by mimicking natural forest conditions.

Palm Plantation: Behind the lake, native Indian palms such as phoenix date palm and toddy palm will be planted. These palms will offer nesting sites for various bird species and small mammals, and support species like hornbills and weaver birds.

Attracting Birds: The park’s flora includes a variety of trees, reeds, aquatic plants, shrubs, and bushes specifically chosen to support local wildlife and enhance biodiversity. Notable species include Neem, Indian Coral Tree, Water Lilies, Lotus, Wild Jasmine, and Karonda.

    Visitor Infrastructure

The park offers a range of amenities including a ticket counter, food court, modern toilets, internal pathways, a jogging/cycling track, an amphitheatre with an increased plinth height, watch towers, and cast-iron benches. Landscaping features expanded lawns, green pockets, and an irrigation system. Utilities are well-integrated, including a 200 kVA transformer and additional borewells.

    ******************************************************************************************

The Asia+ Festival, presented by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is introducing the “Middle Eastern Series” this year with “The Woven Sounds” concert on October 19 as its first offering. Persian carpet-making is a world-famous craft. Iranian ethnomusicologist and musician Mehdi Aminian will lead his ensemble to perform traditional Persian instruments rarely seen in Hong Kong and revive a folk custom of carpet weavers. Fusing Persian music with carpet-making, the programme features the folklore and cultural traditions of Iran.      In the long history of Persian culture, carpets are a unique symbol and their making has been recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage item. The weavers would turn the patterns of the rugs into lyrics, sing them aloud to let other weavers know the patterns while slipping in casual conversations. This long tradition of pattern singing, called “naqshe-khani”, has been passed down through generations.         Aminian, after years of research, has recreated this fading custom on stage. His ensemble will perform traditional Persian instruments rarely featured in Hong Kong, including the ney (flute), setar (stringed instrument) and kamancheh (bowed string instrument). Along with ensemble performances, each instrument will be showcased separately in an improvisation session. The concert’s repertoire also has a distinct flavour. For instance, the piece “Silence” is depicted with audible music which exudes an ethereal quality. As a female weaver sings soulfully while working on stage, video footage of other carpet weavers filmed in Iran will also be shown, offering audiences a glimpse into the social landscape of the country.      “The Woven Sounds” concert will be held at 8pm on October 19 at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre Theatre. Tickets priced at $240, $300 and $380 are now available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk). For telephone bookings, please call 3166 1288, or use the mobile ticketing app “URBTIX”.      The programme is performed in Persian and Qashqai. A free meet-the-artist session will be held after the performance on October 19. In addition, a weaving workshop and a documentary screening and sharing session will be held on October 17 and 18 respectively at The Mills, formerly known as Nan Fung Cotton Mills. For details, please refer to asiaplus.gov.hk/2024/en/the-woven-sounds.      The second Asia+ Festival is running from September to November, highlighting the arts and culture of nearly 30 countries from Asia, the Middle East and Belt and Road regions. Apart from stage programmes, there are also thematic exhibitions, an outdoor carnival, film screenings, outreach activities and more, numbering over 100 in total. Source: Government of Western Samoa

    Share this:

    (AHC Compound Avele – Thursday, 19 September 2024 @ 6.00pm)

    Rev. Siaosi Salesulu

    Honourable Ministers of Cabinet

    And Members of Parliament

Honoured Representatives of the Diplomatic Corps

Australian First Nations Men’s and Australian Women’s 7s Teams and Management

    Distinguished guests

    Ladies and Gentlemen

Talofa lava and warmest greetings. Rev. Salesulu, we extend our

heartfelt gratitude for your uplifting message and prayers. Your words set a tone of unity and positivity for this special event. Thank you, and may you continue to be anointed and blessed in your ministry to the world.

This evening, it is both an honour and a pleasure to welcome the

Australian First Nations Men’s 7s Rugby team and the Australian

Women’s 7s team to our shores.

I have fond memories that I have shared with the Australian High

Commissioner, His Excellency Will Robinson on occasion about my

time on Policing missions to Timor-Leste, and the time I’ve spent in

Darwin and Alice Springs. I have also recently had the privilege to join the Australian High Commission for the launch of their Art Exhibition featuring Torres Straight artists on display for the people of Samoa to enjoy.

Language, culture and our own connection to land and sea is

important to our Samoan people. Tonight, we celebrate not only the remarkable achievements of these outstanding athletes but also the deep and meaningful connections between our peoples. Sport is more than just a game; it is a powerful bridge that connects communities, fosters understanding, and nurtures friendships across borders.

I acknowledge the efforts of the Australian Government to centre First Nations in your Foreign Policy and through your programs like

    PacificAus Sports and Team Up.

Our two nations share a strong bond, united through our love for

rugby and a mutual commitment to supporting athletes from

grassroots to high performance. This includes the PacificAus Sports

support for Manusina 15s development pathways through Penina

Pasifika, and pre-olympic support for the Manu 7s.

The presence of three Australian teams in Samoa this week to

celebrate 100 years of Rugby is a testament to the strength of this

partnership. I hope your participation and dedication inspires us all

and reminds us of the true spirit of competition and collaboration.

You will no doubt be aware of the newly established Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the commitment by the Government of Samoa to fostering an environment where sports can thrive, and our athletes can achieve their full potential. One of our primary goals is to ensure that sports are accessible to all Samoans, regardless of their background. We are dedicated to developing programs that not only enhance performance but also instils values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience in our youth.

We are therefore deeply grateful for Australia’s unwavering support in the realm of sports, which helps elevate not just the game but also the lives of countless individuals resonating with the goals of the Ministry. It is through this spirit of camaraderie and shared passion that we continue to grow and succeed together. A spirit that was evident at the Manusina versus Australia A match on Monday, on and off the field.

As we move towards two Rugby World Cups hosted in Australia,

Samoa looks forward to exploring opportunities to further strengthen our partnership and Rugby in Samoa, at all levels.

Thank you for being here, for your dedication, and for the powerful

example you set for all of us. Let us celebrate the unity and friendship that sport brings into our lives.

Fa’afetai tele lava, and all the best on the competition this week.

May your time in our beautiful Samoa be a memorable and a joyous trip for everyone.

    Thank you

RESCUE: HI-SURF TV SERIES RIDES HIGH RATINGS WAVE, TAPS EXCLUSIVELY HAWAII HIRES FOR SPECIALIZED WATER UNIT

Local talent tapped for producing and crew positions on new lifeguard drama from John Wells Productions, Warner Bros. Television and FOX Entertainment

HONOLULU Hawai‘i-based television series Rescue: HI-Surf is TV’s highest rated fall drama to debut in six years, with its September 22 premiere on FOX television network reaching 4.7 million viewers per Nielsen’s fast national ratings. The John Wells Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and FOX Entertainment co-production hired a local Hawai‘i producer and sourced the vast majority of the crew from Hawai‘i, including 100% of the water unit hires for the series. Rescue: HI-Surf continues now in its regular Monday time slot, airing in Hawai‘i at 8 p.m. on FOX affiliate KHON.

Sweeping audiences into the lives of lifeguards patrolling the North Shore of O‘ahu, Rescue: HI-Surf “delivers just what its title promises” (Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times) with a pulse-pounding drama from executive producer John Wells (The West Wing), who also directed the first two episodes, and Matt Kester, creator, executive producer and showrunner. As a Hawai‘iocean water-centric show, the production retained globally renowned lifeguard, surfer and risk management specialist Brian Keaulana as its Rescue: HI-Surf producer and stunt coordinator. Keaulana, who pioneered using jet skis as safety and rescue watercraft and developed the BWRAG (Big Wave Risk Assessment Group) system, has pulled together a specialized water unit for the series that consists entirely of local hires. Kester, who grew up and lives on the North Shore of O‘ahu, also brings a deep sense of community to a series inspired by the water men and women of Hawai‘i.

“Rescue: HI-Surf is a first-of-its-kind series on so many levels, thanks to the vision of its award-winning producers, writers and studio partners, and the talents of our film and creative industries workforce here in Hawai‘i,” said Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) Director James Kunane Tokioka. “This compelling character drama offers a tremendous platform to recognize and honor the daily bravery of our lifeguard professionals while generating dynamic opportunities for our local production workforce and our creative economy.”

Starring Robbie Magasiva, Arielle Kebbel, Adam Demos, Kekoa Scott Kekumano, Zoe Cipres, and Alex Aiono, Rescue: HI-Surf dives into the personal and professional worlds of dedicated first responders, as the characters navigate the often life-threatening conditions of one of the world’s most famous stretches of coastline. The vast majority of the series is shot outdoors on location on O‘ahu for an authentic, immersive viewer experience.

“The production’s intention from the beginning was to hire as many of its crew and talent locally. When you have a series that is rooted in the fabric of Hawai‘i’s North Shore lifeguards, viewers will experience the world of these everyday heroes. Rescue: HI-Surf is a series we hope gets picked up for a second season and beyond. It takes a village and we applaud the work of the county and state film offices and our state and county agencies for their ongoing support to make it possible for this series to be made where it is set – Hawai‘i,” said DBEDT Creative Industries Division Chief Officer Georja Skinner.

A special episode of Rescue: HI-Surf will also air on February 9, 2025 after FOX Sports’ presentation of Super Bowl LIX, maximizing the exposure for Hawai‘i from this coveted slot to bring scores of television audiences nationwide into the heavy-water action.

About Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT)

    Governor Gavin Newsom

This signing event marks a significant milestone in California’s ongoing efforts to promote healing and advance justice. The legislation includes critical measures that tackle a wide range of issues affecting Black Californians, from criminal justice reforms to civil rights and education.

“As Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus, I am deeply grateful to Governor Newsom for signing this critical set of Reparations Bills, which have been key priorities for our Caucus. These bills lay a meaningful foundation to address the historic injustices faced by Black Californians, and I want to extend my sincere thanks to my fellow Caucus members and the advocacy leaders who have championed this effort. This is a multi-year effort, and I look forward to continuing our partnership with the Governor on this important work in the years to come as we push toward lasting justice and equity,” said Assemblymember Lori D. Wilson (D-Suisun City).

“This is a monumental achievement born from a two-year academic study of the losses suffered by Black Americans in California due to systemic bigotry and racism. Healing can only begin with an apology. The State of California acknowledges its past actions and is taking this bold step to correct them, recognizing its role in hindering the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness for Black individuals through racially motivated punitive laws,” said Assemblymember Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr. (D-Los Angeles), who served on the California Reparations Task Force.

    Overview of key bills

Addressing food & medical deserts: SB 1089 by Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D-Los Angeles) requires grocery stores and pharmacies to provide advance notice to the community and workers before closures, helping to address food deserts that disproportionately affect communities of color.

Strengthening protections against discrimination: AB 1815 by Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber (D-San Diego) clarifies that “race” includes traits associated with race, such as hair texture and protective hairstyles, providing stronger protections against discrimination.

Combating maternal health disparities: AB 2319 by Assemblymember Lori Wilson (D-Suisun City) requires hospitals to report compliance information and authorizes the Attorney General to enforce against hospitals that are out of compliance with existing law requiring perinatal health care workers to complete anti-bias trainings.

Increasing access to literature in prisons: AB 1986 by Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles) mandates the Office of the Inspector General to post and review the list of banned books in state prisons, promoting access to literature for incarcerated individuals.

Formally apologizing for slavery: AB 3089 by Assemblymember Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr. (D-Los Angeles) affirms California’s recognition of the harms caused by chattel slavery and issues a formal apology, which will be memorialized with a plaque in the State Capitol.

Addressing employment discrimination, preschool access, & college and career financial aid: Additional CLBC measures the Governor signed into law will address employment discrimination, provide more opportunities for child care providers to become CA State Preschool contractors, increase college and career financial support for foster youth, and increase foster youth financial support. Additionally, with SB 1348 (Bradford), the state is establishing the designation of “California Black-Serving Institutions,” to recognize higher education campuses that excel in providing resources and support to Black students.

Read a copy of the apology

Once signed by representatives from all branches of government, California will join other states, including Florida, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Alabama, New Jersey, and Iowa, in issuing formal apologies for their role in slavery, acknowledging historical injustices and the ongoing impacts of racial discrimination.

    Building on longstanding efforts
Since taking office, Governor Newsom has taken significant steps to address racial disparities in California. He expanded health care access and affordability, food access, child care, and advanced financial relief programs. The Governor has introduced new statewide programs, including universal transitional kindergarten and college and career savings accounts for all children, issued an executive order mandating state agencies to incorporate equity analysis into their policies, made a historic investment in school equity through the Equity Multiplier, strengthened the California Civil Rights Department, taken action to address maternal health disparities and improve reproductive and maternal health, and created the nation’s first “Ebony Alert” system for missing Black children and young women.

Taking aim at structural racism and systemic injustice, the Governor issued a moratorium on the death penalty, which is unfairly applied to people of color, and has enacted critical reforms to create a fairer criminal justice system. These include one of the strongest use-of-force laws in the country, ending the use of the carotid restraint, increasing transparency for peace officer misconduct records, and the closure of the Division of Juvenile Justice and creation of the Office of Youth and Community Restoration.

The Governor previously signed legislation to enable the return of Bruce’s Beach – a property unjustly taken nearly a century ago – to the descendants of its Black owners, established California’s first Racial Equity Commission and a new process for evaluating equity in budget proposals, and signed legislation to allow student athletes to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness, making California the first state to do so and prompting a nationwide change in NCAA rules. In 2020, the Governor signed bipartisan legislation into law establishing a Reparations Task Force to study and develop proposals aimed at rectifying historical injustices faced by Black Californians whose recommendations are reflected in many of these new laws.

The following measures have been signed into law:

    • AB 51 by Assemblymember Mia Bonta (D-Oakland) – Early childcare and education: California state preschool program.
    • AB 1815 by Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber (D-San Diego) – Discrimination: race: hairstyles.
    • AB 1986 by Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles) – State prisons: banned books.
    • AB 2319 by Assemblymember Lori Wilson (D-Suisun City) – California Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act.
    • AB 2508 by Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) – Student financial aid: California Kids Investment and Development Savings (KIDS) Program: foster youth.
    • AB 2906 by Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles) – Foster care payments.
    • AB 3089 by Assemblymember Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr. (D-Los Angeles) – Chattel slavery: formal apology.
    • SB 1089 by Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D-Los Angeles) – Food and prescription access: grocery and pharmacy closures.
    • SB 1340 by Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D-Los Angeles) – Discrimination.
    • SB 1348 by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) – Postsecondary education: Designation of California Black-Serving Institutions.

The Governor earlier this year signed:

    • AB 1984 by Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber (D-San Diego) – Pupil discipline: transfer reporting.
    • AB 3131 by Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) – Strong Workforce Program: applicants receiving equity multiplier funding.

The National Day Fireworks Display will light up the sky over Victoria Harbour at 9pm on October 1 (Tuesday) to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

A total of 31 888 firing shells will be discharged from three barges and six pontoons in an approximately 23-minute extravaganza. The event is co-ordinated by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, and is sponsored by the Hong Kong Chinese Importers & Exporters’ Association.

The theme for this year’s fireworks display is “Splendid fireworks shining over a prosperous China”. The fireworks display will be divided into eight scenes, each with its own characteristics. Highlights include the first scene, “75th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China”, which will lift the curtain on the display with images of red five-pointed stars and purple five-petal flowers. The sixth scene, “The Legend of Pandas”, mainly featuring the green colour, shows images of pandas’ favourite food such as bamboo leaves to express the citywide welcome for their arrival. The seventh scene “Auspicious Treasures” showcases different kinds of ring-shaped fireworks, symbolising the strong bonds and perfect harmony among the various ethnic groups in China. The fireworks display will reach its climax in the last scene, “The Magnificent Scenes of China”, with flourishes of “Chinese Red”, “Big Whistle” and “Gorgeous Golden Crown” images showering blessings to all, wishing continued prosperity for the nation and peaceful lives for the people.

To offer audiences a new experience, for the first time a drone session will be staged before the National Day Fireworks Display as a prelude.
(Note: The staging of the drone session will depend on factors such as weather conditions that night).

The display can be seen from many vantage points on both sides of the harbour including Tsim Sha Tsui, the Mid-Levels, Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and the Hung Hom Bypass.

To present the fireworks display in a more enjoyable way, viewers are invited to tune into Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 4 (FM 97.6 to 98.9) for synchronised music.

To facilitate police implementation of special crowd management measures in the Tsim Sha Tsui area for the fireworks display, both the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Hong Kong Space Museum will be closed earlier at 6pm on October 1.

Citizens are urged to help keep public areas clean and to show respect for public property. They are also urged to show consideration to others to make the event a safe one.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Update on Moor Park

    Source: City of Preston

The BBC have now left Moor Park in Preston following the Radio 2 in the Park event that took place over three days from 6-8 September

Due to the wet ground conditions from heavy rain on the Sunday during the event, the BBC site team only left the park on 20 September, a week after their scheduled departure.

The Council’s parks team, in conjunction with the BBC and their event team, have attended the park every day since the event but were unable to carry out a full assessment of the site until after all the crew and vehicles had left.

The Council continues to work with the BBC and events team who are helping with the reinstatement of the park, with some areas already starting to ‘green up’ again.

Two specialist contractors have also attended the park to give their advice on how to best help the affected areas. Both have advised that it is best to leave the ground to recover and dry out and to reseed where needed in the spring.

A priority for the parks team has been to clear all the paths of mud and we are in the process of arranging to have these cleaned further to allow better access through the site.

The Council is advising people to be careful when using the park as some of the ground is still uneven, to stick to the paths wherever possible and to watch where they are walking.

Councillor Freddie Bailey, Cabinet Member for Environment and Community Safety said:

Anyone who attended the event or saw the footage of the Sunday knows just how much rain we had in a short space of time. Unfortunately, due the large numbers of visitors and heavy footfall in some areas of the park, damage to parts of the park were inevitably unavoidable.

“The public have been really supportive and we’d like to say thank you for understanding that the damage caused really was out of our control. As proud Prestonians, we have been very pragmatic and appreciate that the grass will grow back again in time, with a little help and care from our team of fantastic gardeners!

“We have prioritised getting the football back up and running on the site and have already marked up two new pitches with a plan for the third one in the coming weeks. We are liaising with the local football league as to when we can start to use them.”

The Councils team of gardeners continue to work on the site daily to ensure that the areas that are unaffected by the event are kept clean and tidy, as the park is expected to look.

The two children’s play areas, basketball courts, tennis courts and skate park remain unaffected by the event.

Salford City Council has confirmed the decision to wholly acquire Salford Community Stadium.

The decision was confirmed at the council’s Cabinet meeting on Tuesday 24 September. This was following the call-in process and a scrutiny panel on the evening of Monday 23 September.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: More Changing Places

    Source: City of Sunderland

New Changing Places toilets are opening across Sunderland helping to make sports, leisure, libraries and parks more accessible for people with disabilities.

The venues and work programme for the toilets were backed by the City Council and the full list of more than a dozen Sunderland facilities is at: Changing Places Toilets (changing-places.org)

All the toilets are designed for people with disabilities and complex needs who require extra facilities that are not offered by standard accessible toilets. Changing Places toilets are bigger with room for one or two carers, and include equipment and support that is needed by people who may have limited mobility, such as a hoist, privacy screens and an adult-sized changing bench.

Sunderland City Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Safer Communities, Councillor Kelly Chequer said: “Getting the funding, completing the fitting-out work, plus of course opening and registering the toilets has all been very important work.

“The new facilities show how much we as a City Council are determined to have opportunities and access for all. Changing Places aligns to our ongoing plans for a healthier, vibrant city and to make public venues more accessible to all our residents and visitors. I know how these are greatly welcomed and appreciated.”

Money came from the national Changing Places funding programme that granted £330,000 for the works. The new facilities are at:

    • Herrington Country Park
    • Hetton Community Pool and Wellness Centre (Everyone Active)
    • Houghton Sports and Wellness Centre (Everyone Active)
    • Raich Carter (Everyone Active)
    • Roker Park
    • Silksworth Community Pool Tennis and Wellness Centre (Everyone Active)
    • Washington Library and Customer Service Centre

A facility at the Elemore Park Garden and Visitor Centre was also completed last year.

Everyone Active’s contract manager, Ian Bradgate, said: “We aim to serve people across the local community and want to ensure everyone feels welcome and included at our centres. These accessible toilets will ensure those with disabilities and complex needs who require extra facilities are fully catered for.”

It’s been estimated that there are around quarter of a million people in the UK who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

Cllr Chequer added: “Changing Places is about opening up more public places for children or adults with complex needs who need carer support, appropriate equipment and more space. Standard accessible toilets cannot meet these needs and were designed for people who can use them independently. As we increase the number of Changing Places toilets, we are living up to its name and bringing very positive change to places all across our city.”

Karen Hoe, MDUK Changing Places Manager, said: “Changing Places toilets are life-changing facilities required by over a quarter of a million people in the UK – not including their family carers. The new Changing Places toilets in Sunderland will make a huge difference to disabled people and their families and will mean that they can enjoy all that the venues and area has to offer.”

  • MIL-OSI Africa: PROTEC and GE Vernova Celebrate Inaugural Next Engineers: Engineering Academy class

Source: Africa Press Organisation – English (2) – Report:

    JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, September 27, 2024/APO Group/ —

Next Engineers, a global college-and career-readiness programme working to increase the diversity of young people in engineering, celebrated the graduation of its first-ever Engineering Academy learners in Johannesburg, South Africa on Friday, September 27. The graduation ceremony marked the programme’s contribution towards bridging the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills gap in the country through exposing learners to hands-on engineering experiences and career pathways.

The 37 learners from 15 high schools across Johannesburg who completed the programme, many of whom plan to study towards an engineering-related qualification at university or technical higher learning institutions, were joined by their families at University of Witwatersrand, Sturrock Park Sports Hall, to celebrate their achievements. Launched in 2022, PROTEC, University of Witwatersrand, and Kutitiva Foundation are the educational partners for the local Next Engineers programme, and local GE Vernova engineers and employees actively engage with Academy participants through hands-on, skill-based volunteering.

“We are proud to see our first cohort of learners graduating and wish them all a successful learning trajectory in the next stage of their education journey,” said Matsi Eseu, South Africa HR Director for GE Vernova. “At GE Vernova, we believe education is a significant driver of economic inclusion and it’s inspiring to see the positive impact the Next Engineers programme is having, not just in empowering tomorrow’s engineers who will solve society’s most pressing challenges but also in increasing the diversity of young people, particularly females, in the engineering sector. We extend our gratitude to all those involved in the Engineering Academy.”

Learners who complete the Engineering Academy program and enroll in a qualified engineering or engineering-related degree programme receive financial aid to support them as they continue on their paths to becoming engineers.

Balan Moodley, CEO of PROTEC, said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every graduate in this programme.  Their commitment and hard work inspire us all, and I have every confidence they will continue to make a positive impact in the field of engineering and beyond. I also want to express my sincere gratitude to GE Vernova in Johannesburg for their unwavering support and partnership throughout this journey. Together, we have laid the groundwork for a brighter future in engineering, and I am excited to see the continued success of Next Engineers in empowering young minds.”

The Next Engineers: Engineering Academy is a transformative learning experience designed for learners aged 15 to 18. Through a rigorous curriculum, immersive design challenges, and career coaching, participants learn to think and act like engineers.

    Key programme highlights:

    • Dedication: The Engineering Academy spans three years, with learners dedicating 220 hours outside of regular school hours to participate.
    • Design challenges: In small teams, learners tackle increasingly complex design challenges, mastering the engineering design process.
    • Foundational skills: Beyond technical knowledge, learners develop essential skills such as communication, teamwork, persistence, time management, and presentation abilities.
    • Education and career exploration: Workshops and activities prepare learners for their next steps, including university campus tours and interactions with company volunteers.
    • Scholarships: Learners who complete the program and enroll in post-secondary engineering degree programs receive partial scholarships. Next Engineers anticipates granting at least $2 million in scholarships to the inaugural classes of Engineering Academy learners worldwide.

Johannesburg, South Africa, was among the first four locations to launch Next Engineers, with a $2.5 million (R44.6 million) investment from the GE Foundation in 2021. To date, Next Engineers, which also includes programming for learners in grades 8-12, has reached more than 3,500 learners across Johannesburg.

STEM training and education, such as Next Engineers, is helping to solve global challenges while also lifting up communities through economic opportunities. Next Engineers is not the only way GE Vernova in South Africa has committed to supporting the next generation of STEM talent. GE Vernova’s South Africa External Bursary Programme has offered comprehensive bursaries to the tune of $5.4 million (R95.6 million) to support over 648 beneficiaries pursuing a Bachelor of Science, Commerce or Arts qualification from 2020 to date. The bursaries are aimed at alleviating the financial strain of tertiary students and covers the tuition, accommodation, textbook costs, and a monthly stipend over the period of study.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: South Africans must know the names of struggle heroes and heroines

    Source: South Africa News Agency

President Cyril Ramaphosa has stressed the importance of South Africans recognising and honouring the former liberation heroes and heroines who have returned to their home country, acknowledging their vital role in securing the nation’s freedom.

The President was speaking during the repatriation and restitution homecoming ceremony of 42 South African freedom fighters who lost their lives in Zambia and Zimbabwe during the apartheid era.

The ceremony was held at the Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum in Tshwane, Pretoria on Friday with families of the freedom fighters present.

The occasion was also graced by former President Thabo Mbeki, Minister of Defence Angie Motshekga, and the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton Mckenzie.

“South Africans need to know the names and appreciate the contributions of these returned freedom fighters. I ask that we read out the names of these patriots for all our people to know them.

“Their names will forever be inscribed here at the Wall of Names in Freedom Park so that we may never forget. Any nation that values its freedom holds its liberation heroes and heroines in high regard,” the President said.

The repatriation of the freedom fighters’ remains from Zambia and Zimbabwe forms part of the Resistance and Liberation Heritage Route Project (RLHR). The RLHR is a national memory project aimed at commemorating, celebrating, educating, promoting, preserving, conserving and providing a durable testament of South African’s road to freedom.

The repatriation initiative is part of a broader effort to bring the remains of freedom fighters who died in exile to their final resting places.

As the country celebrates the return of the struggle heroes and heroines, the President said through the act of repatriation, their citizenship has been reinstated.

“We return them to the land of their birth. We restore them to their families and their people. Decades ago, these freedom fighters left a country that was at war with itself.

“They left a country in which the fundamental rights of its people were brutally and cruelly suppressed by apartheid, which was declared a crime against humanity. Today, their remains return to a free and democratic South Africa,” he said.

The President said it will forever remain a source of regret that they were never to see the dawn of the freedom to which they dedicated their lives.

He emphasised that it was fitting that the country gathers at Freedom Park to honour them.

“It is here at Freedom Park that we remember our struggle for liberation and the many men and women who fought so that we may be free. It is here that we celebrate the achievement of our democracy.

“And it is here that we pledge to strive together, sparing neither strength nor courage, until the fundamental freedoms of every person are realised,” the President said.

Through the reparation of the remains of these freedom fighters, President Ramaphosa said the country is giving further effect to the Preamble of its Constitution.

He added that while these freedom fighters belonged to different political traditions, they were united by a common vision of a free South Africa.

“And though they departed this life many years ago, their ideals and their values continue to guide the South Africa we are building. Their activism and their sacrifices continue to inspire our efforts to build a better life for all,” he said.

The President extended his gratitude to the countries that offered these freedom fighters shelter, support and, in the end, a fitting resting place.

“We are grateful in this instance to the governments and peoples of Zambia and Zimbabwe for having taken great care of our compatriots and for enabling their remains to be repatriated,” the President said.

    Preserving the nation’s liberation heritage

President Ramaphosa said government is making every effort to preserve the nation’s liberation heritage.

“To do so, we must honour all those who authored this history by taking part in the struggle to free our country. This we must continue to do because our freedom can never be taken for granted.

“We must continue to honour those men and women whose love for their country and its people motivated them to sacrifice their lives for freedom,” he said.

The President spoke in detail about a few of the struggle horoes and heroines who were well known.

One of the prominent names was that of Duma Nokwe who was the Secretary-General of the African National Congress at a crucial moment in the nation’s struggle for liberation.

“In exile, he was a prominent voice on the continent and around the world in support of the cause of the South African people.

“It is perhaps a sign of his esteemed place in the history of the liberation movement that his remains were exhumed still wearing the ANC scarf in which he was buried in Lusaka in 1978,” the President said.

Another prominent name is that of John Nyathi Pokela who was Chairman of the Pan Africanist Congress who spent more than a decade on Robben Island for his activities as a member of the Azanian People’s Liberation Army, then known as Poqo.

He is remembered for the vital role he played in forging unity within the PAC. He passed away in Harare in 1985.

Another prominent leader of the Pan Africanist Congress was Edwin Letsholo Makoti.

He was a founding member of the PAC and was Secretary for Publicity and Information in the PAC Central Committee at the time of his passing in Harare in 1989.

The President spoke of the well-known Florence Mophosho, a stalwart of the struggle who is remembered for her commitment, sacrifice and fiery spirit.

“She was a great leader of our movement and a pioneer in the struggle for women’s rights. She helped us understand that no society can be free until its women are free,” he said.

The name of Basil February is also written large in the history of the nation’s struggle. As a member of the Luthuli Detachment of Umkhonto we Sizwe, he was killed in action in the then-Rhodesia during the Wankie Campaign.

“There are other freedom fighters we honour here today whose names are not as familiar. And yet their sacrifice and their contribution to our freedom is no less profound and is no less valued,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za
