  • MIL-OSI USA: In Rochester, Gillibrand Condemns President Trump’s Actions To Dismantle Head Start

    US Senate News:

Trump Actions Would Deprive 50,000 Low-Income Children In New York State Of Critical Early Childhood Education
Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited an Action for a Better Community (ABC) Head Start Center in Rochester to condemn President Trump’s actions to dismantle Head Start. Federal funding allows nine Head Start centers to operate in Monroe County, serving over 1000 children. Without this funding, Head Start centers across New York and around the country will be forced to close their doors, which will deprive low-income children of critical early childhood education that gives them the tools to succeed both in and out of the classroom. President Trump has attempted to diminish Head Start through a number of executive actions that are making it harder for Head Start centers to stay up and running, including closing regional offices that help administer the program, laying off staff, and withholding already authorized funding.
Head Start programs provide low-income children from birth to age five with comprehensive child development programs, as well as support and services for families. The services Head Start and Early Head Start offer include early education, health screenings, promoting social and emotional health, nutrition, connection to other social services, and services for children with disabilities. Head Start and Early Head Start programs serve over 50,000 children in New York State.
“Head Start helps make sure that every child has a chance to thrive,“ said Senator Gillibrand. “It is an investment in our kids and our future that has been proven time and time again to be highly effective at preparing children for school and improving both their social and physical health outcomes. President Trump’s actions to dismantle Head Start would hurt the kids and families most in need – including the 50,000 Head Start attendees in New York alone. I will do everything in my power to fight this effort and preserve funding for this vital program through the next fiscal year and beyond.”
“The Trump administration’s proposed decision to eliminate the Head Start program is a cruel and shortsighted attack on working families and their children,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “For the last 60 years, Head Start has empowered generations of young people with the tools to succeed and achieve their dreams—not just in school, but in life. I’m proud to join Senator Gillibrand in continuing the fight to protect Head Start because investing in our children is morally right, economically smart, and essential to the strength of our communities.”
“Hundreds of families throughout Monroe County depend on ABC and Head Start to provide reliable child care and critical early education, nutrition, and support services every day. It’s no secret that the city of Rochester has among the highest childhood poverty rates in the nation; slashing these programs will further jeopardize the future of hundreds of kids and working families throughout our community, while placing an additional burden on our local governments to fill the gap in service these cuts will create,” said County Executive Adam Bello. “I’m grateful to Senator Gillibrand, Senator Schumer, and Congressman Morelle for fighting back against these potential cuts by the Trump administration and hope that others will join us in standing up for the future of America’s children and families.”
“Head Start programs are a proven method to provide much-needed services to our children and set them up for future success,” said State Senator Jeremy Cooney. “Amid threats to this vital program by the Trump Administration, it’s important now more than ever to push back and keep these services funded. I want to thank Senator Gillibrand for her leadership on this issue and for her continued commitment to our state’s children and families most in need.”
“The attacks we’re seeing on Head Start and ABC programs aren’t just bureaucratic decisions—they are deeply harmful actions that threaten the well-being and future of countless children and families in our communities,” said New York State Assemblyman Demond Meeks. “These programs are more than just early education initiatives; they are foundational supports that help close the opportunity gap, ensure school readiness, and allow working parents to build better lives for their families. The recent federal actions, including payment delays, staff terminations, and the closure of the Region II Head Start office, are unacceptable. We must prioritize the educational needs of our children. I fully support Senator Gillibrand’s efforts to push back against these dangerous moves and to demand accountability from the Trump administration and our Republican members of Congress. This isn’t about red or blue, Republican or Democrat; this is about right and wrong. As a representative of the 137th Assembly District and a resident of Rochester, a city where so many families rely on Head Start and ABC, I am committed to doing everything in my power to protect these important, essential services. We cannot allow political decisions in Washington to jeopardize the future of our children here at home. In the words of Frederick Douglass, it is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. In the days ahead, we must not consider it unpatriotic to raise certain basic questions about our national character. – Dr Martin Luther King Jr.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: In Buffalo, Gillibrand Condemns President Trump’s Plan To Eliminate Head Start

    US Senate News:

Proposal Would Deprive 50,000 Low-Income Children In New York State Of Critical Early Childhood Education
Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited the Ferry Academy Head Start Program to condemn President Trump’s plan to eliminate Head Start. President Trump budget’s request for FY26 reportedly aims to eliminate all funding for Head Start. Federal funding allows 20 Head Start centers in Buffalo and Niagara Counties that serve over 1,200 children to operate. Without this funding, Head Start centers across New York and around the country will be forced to close their doors, which will deprive low-income children of critical early childhood education that gives them the tools to succeed both in and out of the classroom. President Trump has also attempted to diminish Head Start through a number of executive actions that are making it harder for Head Start centers to stay up and running, including closing regional offices that help administer the program, laying off staff, and withholding already authorized funding.
President Trump’s proposal to eliminate funding for Head Start would hurt the kids and families most in need – including the 50,000 Head Start attendees in New York alone. I will do everything in my power to fight this effort and preserve funding for this vital program through the next fiscal year and beyond.”
“Children who can take advantage of Head Start programs show better health, educational, and social outcomes,” said Rep. Tim Kennedy. “As an occupational therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how early developmental support transforms lives. These programs are good for families while also strengthening our communities and the economy. Head Start works, and Donald Trump’s attacks on this proven program are inexcusable. Tens of thousands of children in New York State have a chance at a better future because of Head Start, and I will never stop fighting for this vital program.”
“It is becoming far too common, since the new administration has taken over the White House, where I have stated, ‘this is bad policy.’ Cutting funding for or disrupting Head Start programs across the country is another example of bad policy,” said Crystal Peoples-Stokes, New York State Assembly Majority Leader. “We have already seen what a funding freeze has done to Head Start programs in the Southern Tier. Cutting funding or eliminating Head Start programs puts an undue burden on families as well as eliminates early childhood education jobs. This is an unacceptable policy and I applaud and stand with Senator Gillibrand and Head Start organizations fighting to keep these programs alive.”
“Head Start is not just a program — it’s a critical lifeline for thousands of children and working families in Buffalo,” said Buffalo Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon. “Cutting this funding would have devastating consequences for our most vulnerable residents and undermine decades of progress in early childhood education. I’m proud to stand with Senator Gillibrand in fighting to protect Head Start and ensure every child in Buffalo has the chance to grow, learn, and succeed.”
“Head Start provides the supports and programs that young children need to succeed in school and ultimately in life, helping them grow into productive members of our community. Cutting funding to this critical program is the latest assault on children and families from a regime in Washington that is working every day to make Americans weaker, sicker, less smart and less safe,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “Just as our democracy is laboring under this anti-democratic regime, children and the most vulnerable among us are being stripped of the resources they need to succeed in life all so that billionaires can get a tax cut. It’s a disgusting travesty and I urge all Americans to speak out against these cruel, vindictive and unnecessary cuts.”
“It’s outrageous that this administration wants to take resources away from children, low-income families, and people with disabilities – the most vulnerable individuals in society – in order to pad their billionaire friends’ pockets with massive tax cuts,” said Common Councilwoman Zeneta Everhart. “For over 60 years, the Head Start program has helped millions of disadvantaged children and parents, including those facing poverty and homelessness. In our community alone, thousands depend on Head Start programs for childcare, health services, and early education – programs which make all the difference between local families struggling and thriving. I thank Senator Gillibrand for standing up for Head Start and fighting back against these reckless attacks on children and vulnerable families.”
“Head Start matters because early childhood education matters,” said Dr. Marie Cannon, Executive Director of the Community Action Organization. “Community Action Organization’s Head Start is built on two main pillars: school readiness and parent engagement in a wholistic service delivery model.  Children are engaged in early learning opportunities to ensure school readiness and future success.  Parents are partners in their child’s education and are engaged in activities that improve their economic and social mobility. Parents set goals that include advancing their own educational attainment and employment attainment and advancement. The investment in Head Start is worth every dime.”
“At the Community Action Organization of WNY, we witness every day the challenges that families across Erie and Niagara County face. From access to quality early childhood education to critical services in health, nutrition, mental health, disability support, and family engagement, the barriers are real, and the need is urgent,” said Dr. Chelsea White, Chief Early Childhood Officer for the Community Action Organization. “For us, Head Start is more than just a program; it’s a vital lifeline that empowers children and families, helping to close the opportunity gap and lay the foundation for lifelong success. As the demand for Head Start grows in our community, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meeting that need with compassion, excellence, and opportunity.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: ATF Atlanta host press conference on combatting firearms trafficking to Mexico

Source: United States Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF)

ATLANTA – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Atlanta Field Division hosted a joint press conference with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to showcase recent efforts to combat the trafficking of firearms to Mexico.

“Firearms trafficking and the illegal activity associated with it continues to threaten the safety of the general public throughout our communities,” said ATF Atlanta Field Division Special Agent in Charge Benjamin Gibbons. “We are working closely with our federal and local law enforcement partners to relentlessly pursue those who attempt to illegally move firearms between the United States and Mexico. Extensive time in a federal prison awaits those who think they can endanger our communities and get away with it.”

“Homeland Security Investigations is steadfast in our mission to combat international firearms trafficking and dismantle transnational criminal networks that threaten public safety on both sides of the border,” said Steven N. Schrank, the Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Georgia and Alabama. “By targeting those who illegally purchase and smuggle weapons into Mexico, we are cutting off a vital lifeline to cartel members and terrorist-designated organizations, while upholding our duty to protect communities at home and abroad. HSI will continue to work relentlessly to identify, apprehend, and bring to justice those fueling this dangerous trade.”

In response to the growing threat posed by Transnational Criminal Organizations and the administration’s emphasis on combating them, ATF has been working swiftly and diligently with federal and local partners to effectively combat the flow of illegal firearms trafficked to Mexico.

Cartels have infiltrated the United States through the southern border and are operating within many local communities. They have established and expanded their networks throughout the United States to carry out illicit activities including fentanyl trafficking and human smuggling.

Cartels rely on specific firearms to facilitate, expand and protect their criminal enterprise, including large caliber and/or belt fed rifles such as, the Ohio Ordinance M2 .50 caliber, FN M240 7.6mm, FN M249 5.56, and the Barrett M82 .50 semi-automatic rifle.

Under President Trump’s and Attorney General Bondi’s leadership, ATF has prevented nearly 9,700 firearms from falling into the hands of dangerous criminals or terrorist. From January 20 to May 1, 2025, ATF agents nationwide initiated 8,501 violent crime cases, arrested 1,912 criminals, seized a total of 10,592 firearms, 655,388 rounds of ammunition, 8,722 firearm parts, and 6,335 assorted explosives.

ATF is the only federal law enforcement agency whose mission is to reduce violent crime. While our mission is clear and concise, it is also immense and dangerous. And, as a small agency with just about 5,000 employees, we can only succeed with our local, state, and federal partners. These partnerships, including the U.S. Attorney’s Offices, Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), other government agencies, state and local law enforcement, help to stem the flow of illegal firearms being trafficked to Mexico.

ATF is the federal agency with jurisdiction for investigating firearms, fires and crimes of arson. More information on ATF can be found at www.atf.gov

  • MIL-OSI USA: In Seattle, Senator Murray Highlights Consequences of Trump & Elon’s Cuts & Layoffs at NIH—Hears from Leading Researchers, Patients, and Early Career Scientists

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Washington State Patty Murray
ICYMI: At Hearing, Senator Murray Slams Trump Administration for Threatening Biomedical Research and Jeopardizing Americans’ Health
NIH Investments support more than $3 billion in economic activity across Washington State and more than 12,000 jobs – MORE HERE
***AUDIO HERE; PHOTOS and B-ROLL HERE***
Seattle, WA— Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, held a roundtable discussion in Seattle highlighting why the investments the federal government makes in biomedical research are so vital, what’s at stake for patients and families as Trump takes a wrecking ball to this research, and why Congress must forcefully push back. Murray was joined by Seattle area leaders in biomedical research of national renown, patients who have benefitted directly from NIH research, and early career researchers who can speak directly to how Trump’s cuts and chaos are jeopardizing the future of biomedical research in America.
During the roundtable, Senator Murray was joined by Dr. Jeff Sperring, Seattle Children’s Chief Executive Officer; Dr. Vittorio Gallo, Seattle Children’s Chief Scientific Officer; Dr. Mary-Claire King, American Cancer Society Professor of Medicine and Genome Sciences, UW School of Medicine; Dr. Jane Hoyt Buckner, M.D., President of Benaroya Research Institute; Kristin Weinstein, PhD candidate at UW School of Medicine; and Alisa Vitello along with her daughter, Olivia Vitello, who benefitted from medication developed through an NIH clinical trial.
President Trump and his administration has systematically undermined NIH and the research it funds, which is having devastating impacts on biomedical research, innovation, and ultimately, the lives of millions of patients and families. The Trump administration’s actions are delaying funding and stalling research for lifesaving treatments and cures, weakening our biomedical workforce, cancelling vital ongoing studies and trials, and threatening to undo decades of hard-won progress.
“Medical research is an economic powerhouse—it supports millions of jobs across the country, especially here in Washington state, and generates billions in economic activity. NIH funding is the cornerstone of our medical research enterprise, while medical research accounts for less than 1 percent of the federal budget, NIH has contributed to over 99 percent of drugs approved by FDA in recent years,” said Senator Murray. “But the real impact isn’t economic, it isn’t jobs, it isn’t awards, it is miracles that give people hope and more time with loved ones. That could mean a new vaccine to protect us from a disease. It could mean new treatment that saves lives. Or a breakthrough discovery that revolutionizes care and research, like Dr. King’s work showing a gene tied to breast cancer.”
“That is all invaluable—but with President Trump—it is all on the chopping block,” continued Senator Murray. “He has already axed 800 grants, over a billion dollars in research for HIV prevention, breast cancer, pregnancy, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and more. He has also blocked $2 billion in grant funding from going out to universities and research institutions across the country. He slapped a $1 limit on NIH researchers’ payment cards—meaning labs can’t get gloves, pipettes, and vials—the basics they need to keep research going. He wants to massively cut funding for basic costs that keep labs running. And Trump is calling for at least an $18 billion cut to NIH funding. And it’s not just funding Trump has cut—it’s the workforce. Trump has pushed out nearly 5,000 people at NIH and counting. He is slashing grants to support early educators. And he is pushing out and scaring away international students. We are seeing canceled trials and delayed research. We must keep up the public pressure. People need to know what is happening. They need to know what is at stake.”
Murray’s roundtable discussion follows a bipartisan Senate Appropriations Committee hearing she co-led this week, where she invited testimony from Washington state mom and patient advocate, Emily Stenson, whose daughter Charlie was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at just three years old but who, thanks to a National Cancer Institute clinical trial at Seattle Children’s Hospital, has been cancer free since December 2024.
“Children are our future, and we drive advances—like improving survival rates for children with brain tumors, developing new therapies for rare diseases, and transforming care for kids with complex behavioral health needs—through research,” said Dr. Vittorio Gallo, Chief Scientific Officer at Seattle Children’s. “Without sustained NIH investment, nearly 200 clinical trials at Seattle Children’s could be delayed or paused. Funding is critical for us to deliver on our mission to provide hope, care and cures.”
“I wanted to first tell you what’s happened to me in consequence of this craziness. I am now owed—4 months later—$1.8 million of a noncompetitive renewal on a project that has been approved at all scientific levels. The Notice of Grant Award has been signed. It was to begin last January 1. It has simply not been sent. It’s not canceled. It just hasn’t come. Somehow it is frozen. No reason has been given. There is no DEI component, it’s only sequencing of DNA…There are probably thousands more like me. That estimate of the of the total cost—the total deficit into those 800 [grants]—I think is only a very small fraction of the actual amount of money that we need as researchers, that has been guaranteed for us. They will need to burn this money if they don’t send it. This money is allocated to the University of Washington. They can’t use it for anything else. They might as well take out the bills and just burn them. In addition to the research itself, it supports 4 young investigators. We’re now 4 months in with their having no salaries from that grant. I’m using my own salary, I’m using gifts that I’ve been accumulating for 50 years to pay them. So far so good, but we’ll run out pretty quickly. Grants like this need to be dislodged from the iceberg in which they are now frozen,” said Dr. Mary-Claire King, American Cancer Society Professor of Medicine and Genome Sciences at UW School of Medicine. Dr. King was the first person to show that breast cancer can be inherited due to mutations in the gene she called BRCA1. Dr. King also shared the story of a woman who participated in one of her projects, “She said, ‘My mother died of breast cancer when I was 14. She missed my high school graduation. She missed the decisions about my going to college. She missed my college graduation. She missed my marriage. She missed the birth of her granddaughter. When I learned that it was possible to have testing to learn if I was predisposed to breast cancer, I was tested right away. I have a mutation in BRCA 1, that surely is what killed her. As soon as I was old enough, I had the same surgery that Angelina Jolie had, and I am now fine. My daughter graduates from high school this June, and I will be there. Just thought, you want to know.’ We owe it to her to bring the NIH back to health. So, thanks very much for what you’re doing.”
“We study immune diseases, particularly autoimmune diseases and allergies. [Autoimmune diseases] affect 25 to 50 million Americans. [Allergies] affect 25% of Americans, in fact two kids in every classroom. And we’re funded 70% by the National Institute of Health, and that work you know, that supports fundamentally understanding these diseases and also clinical trials to test the next new therapy. As well as ways to prevent ever getting a disease like type one diabetes. We want kids never to have to face using insulin every day…I do this because I’m also a physician and a rheumatologist, so I care for people with arthritis, and I’ve been doing that for 30 years. And for the first 10 years of my career, we didn’t have much for my patients and our waiting rooms were filled with wheelchairs. You had to reorganize furniture for our patients. And then drugs called biologics were discovered—in fact, one of the first ones came from the Seattle area—and literally, patients got out of wheelchairs and walked in a week. That research started 30 years before, and that was funded by NIH research, and it would have actually never become a product if those studies hadn’t been done. Today, I still see patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and they’re doing so much better. We don’t have wheelchairs in our waiting rooms anymore,” said Dr. Jane Hoyt Buckner, M.D., President of Benaroya Research Institute. “You may not know you need the cure that is going to be discovered through this research, but in 10 years you may, or your family member may, and by not funding the NIH, some of those cures won’t be there in 10 years. And I also think some of our young people who are trying to choose a career in science are going to be turned away. And it’s only been 100 days, but the chaos that’s been created in that 100 days is already impacting people. We see it now, people choosing not to go to graduate school, people choosing alternative careers, scientists thinking I should move out of the United States. And I can also say I’m fortunate to work very closely with many people at the NIH, particularly on clinical trials trying to cure diseases of the immune system, and they are struggling to continue to do that work. They’re understaffed, they aren’t able to get things out, and they don’t know what’s going to happen next. I know they’re really looking to Congress to help us find a way out of this.”
“Unstable funding from the NIH for biomedical research will have long-lasting, devastating impacts. Early career scientists like myself will be forced to go abroad to continue our training, patients will unnecessarily suffer or die from the diseases that this research could cure, and the United States will cede its position as the global leader in biomedical research,” said Kristin Weinstein, PhD candidate at UW School of Medicine. “I am holding onto the hope that the American public and its leadership will recognize the vital importance of biomedical research, reinstate federal funding for this work, and support our hard-working scientists. At the end of the day, I just want to be in the lab doing what I love most: Making scientific discoveries that will lead to cures for diseases like cancer and autoimmunity.”
Trump and Elon Musk’s DOGE have terminated nearly 800 NIH grants across the country, cutting off more than $1.1 billion in essential research and trials and continue to terminate more grants every week. So far this year, he has slow walked roughly $2 billion in vital NIH funding that should be going out the door to fund the research that might discover the next treatment or cure that will change—or save—a patient’s life.
These grant terminations are a result of the Trump Administration’s Executive Orders against whatever it deems DEI and targeted attacks on specific academic research institutions, which are disrupting landmark diabetes research, targeting promising mRNA vaccines, and spreading vaccine hesitancy amidst a measles outbreak. A full list of HHS grant terminations can be found here. To date, NIH grant terminations include:
    Grants that fund research on HIV prevention, breast cancer, uterine cancer, stroke risk, cardiac health, suicide prevention, smoking cessation, eating disorders, COVID-19, pain, alcohol use disorder, depression, violence prevention in children, pregnancy health disparities, diabetes and obesity, and Alzheimer’s disease;
    More than 270 grants totaling at least $125 million for research focused on improving the health of LGBTQ Americans;
Stop work orders for all NIH training grants that support diverse undergraduate and graduate students and early career scientists, including the Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (U-RISE), the Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC), and F31 Diversity training programs.
The Trump Administration’s actions, including directly terminating early career training programs funded by NIH, are devastating the pipeline of early career researchers and threatening the next generation of breakthroughs, treatments, and cures. On March 31st, an open letter signed by nearly 2,000 of the country’s top scientists including a number of Nobel Prize winners urged the Administration to stop its wholesale assault on U.S. science, which is decimating research, driving scientists to leave the country and putting America at risk of losing a generation of scientists.
Trump has illegally sought to cut billions in funding for universities to conduct this vital research by illegally capping the indirect cost rate in direct violation of bipartisan appropriations law—a federal judge has issued a nationwide injunction against the cap on indirect costs, but the Trump administration is appealing the ruling. The uncertainty around NIH’s indirect cost rate policy has led universities and research institutions around the country to implement hiring freezes, rescind graduate student admissions offers, and shutter entire graduate school programs.
President Trump has pushed out nearly 5,000 NIH employees and 4,000 FDA employees—decimating the very work responsible for discovering lifechanging treatments and cures and ensuring they can safely get to market. He also reportedly plans to propose to nearly halve NIH’s budget.
Senator Murray has been leading the charge against the Trump administration’s efforts to gut lifesaving research at NIH and pushed out nearly 5,000 NIH skilled scientists, grants administrators, and other employees at the agency. When the Trump administration attempted to illegally cap indirect cost rates at 15 percent, Senator Murray immediately and forcefully condemned the move, led the entire Senate Democratic caucus in a letter decrying the proposed change, and introduced amendments to Senate Republicans’ budget resolution to reverse it, which Republicans blocked.
As a longtime appropriator and former Chair of the Senate HELP Committee, Murray has led Congressional efforts to boost biomedical research. Previously, over her years as Chair of the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Murray secured billions of dollars in increases for biomedical research at NIH, and during her time as Chair of the HELP Committee she established the new ARPA-H research agency as part of her PREVENT Pandemics Act to advance some of the most cutting-edge research in the field. Senator Murray was also the lead Democratic negotiator of the bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act, which delivered a major federal investment to boost NIH research, among many other investments.

Recent reports about Customs and Border Protection actions at ports of entry are the focus of a letter signed by more than 40 Democratic members of Congress questioning the agency’s practices and demanding information about complaints of agents’ misconduct, among other things.
The agency appears to be denying entry to noncitizens more often and subjecting travelers to “harsher questioning tactics, prolonged detention and arbitrary denials of entry,” the lawmakers said in a letter provided first to NBC News.
They said the CBP conduct appears to be a response to President Donald Trump’s directive to the Department of Homeland Security to step up vetting of noncitizens who want to come to the United States and of those already in the country.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Boston Globe: ‘A massive win’: After Stop & Shop lowers Jamaica Plain store prices, youth organizers rejoice

    US Senate News:

    May 02, 2025
The youth organizers of Hyde Square Task Force are claiming success, once again.
Nearly two years after releasing a grassroots study on pricing differences at Boston-area Stop & Shop locations, in which the students found a grocery cart of items at their nearby Jackson Square store cost $34 more than a list of similar products in the more affluent Dedham, the prices at both stores are now roughly equal.
During an April shopping trip to both stores, with the same shopping list they first used in 2023, the students found prices for most of the items purchased in Jackson Square and Dedham are now nearly identical. In fact, the two-pound packs of Bubba’s frozen turkey and beef burgers in Dedham were both listed at slightly higher prices.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Lawler Encourages HHS to Protect Mental Health Resources for LGBTQ+ Youth

Source: US Congressman Mike Lawler (R, NY-17)

Washington, D.C. – 5/2/2025… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) is calling on Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to preserve the Specialized Services for LGBTQ+ Youth within the 988 Suicide Prevention and Crisis Lifeline, following reports that the Department’s FY2026 budget proposal would eliminate the program.

The 988 Suicide Prevention and Crisis Lifeline, which offers support via voice, text, and chat in both English and Spanish, introduced the specialized services pilot program for LGBTQ+ youth in 2022. By March 2023, the program expanded to 24/7 availability. As of February 2025, it averages over 2,100 contacts per day.

According to a 2021 CDC study, 45% of high school students who seriously considered attempting suicide identified as LGBTQ+. Lawler emphasized the potential consequences of eliminating these services, noting that it could result in increased emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and long-term mental health issues, which would place further strain on the healthcare system and families.

“The 988 Lifeline has saved countless lives, and for many LGBTQ+ youth, who face disproportionately high risks of suicide, this specialized service is a lifeline in every sense of the word,” wrote the lawmakers. “We cannot leave our children without critical mental health care. As we’ve said in the letter, we firmly believe in parents’ rights, but we also know that we must ensure young people in crisis receive immediate and compassionate care.”

“These are real, vulnerable young people who urgently need access to mental health care. The reported HHS budget draft would eliminate this specialized lifeline, leaving many LGBTQ+ youth without a compassionate voice in moments of profound distress,” concluded the lawmakers.

Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He was rated the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress, 8th overall, surpassing dozens of committee chairs.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Justice Department Addresses Religious Discrimination in Lawsuit for Former Teacher Denied Exemption from Vaccine Mandate

Source: United States Department of Justice

The Justice Department today announced that a federal judge has approved a consent decree that settles its lawsuit against the Advanced Science and Technology Education Charter Schools (ASTEC) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The lawsuit alleges ASTEC discriminated against Marcus Rethwill, a former teacher at the school, on the basis of religion, in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when it terminated him after denying his request for a religious exemption from ASTEC’s vaccine mandate for employees because he could not provide a clergy letter supporting his request. Title VII is a federal statute that prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin or religion.

“When employees’ religious principles conflict with work rules, they should not be forced to choose between practicing their religion and keeping their jobs if a reasonable accommodation can be made,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “Employer policies that rigidly restrict how employees can demonstrate the sincerity of their religious beliefs for religious accommodations are inconsistent with the breadth of Title VII’s protection against religious discrimination.”

“No employee should be forced to violate their religious beliefs just to keep their job,” said U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester for the Western District of Oklahoma. “Employers must take care not to craft or apply policies that require employees to forfeit their religious beliefs or impose unreasonable conditions that question the sincerity of those beliefs.”

Under the consent decree, ASTEC will pay Rethwill $95,000 in monetary damages, revise its anti-religious discrimination policy, and provide mandatory training on the policy to personnel.

The Oklahoma City Area Office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) investigated and attempted to resolve Rethwill’s charge of discrimination before referring it to the Justice Department for litigation. More information about the EEOC is available on its website at www.eeoc.gov.

The full and fair enforcement of Title VII is a top priority of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. Additional information about the Civil Rights Division is available at www.justice.gov/crt/.

Cell and gene therapy market set to grow at 31.3% CAGR through 2030, forecasts GlobalData

    Posted in Pharma

The global dermatological cell and gene therapy (CGT) market is poised for exceptional growth at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31.3%, with sales projected to rise from $291 million in 2024 to $1.5 billion in 2030. Significant advancements in treatments for dermatology disorders are anticipated, driven by innovations from both small to mid-size pharma and biotech companies, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Krystal Biotech’s Vyjuvek (beremagene geperpavec), the first-ever and only redosable gene therapy, received FDA approval in May 2023 for dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB), a serious rare genetic disease that affects the skin and mucosal tissue.

Momna Ali, Healthcare Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “GlobalData anticipates future therapies in development to treat DEB will likely be the primary driving force of market growth of the dermatology CGT landscape, contributing $1.2 billion by 2030, accounting for 80.11% of total CGT sales.”

As per the key opinion leaders (KOLs) interviewed by GlobalData, there has been a heavy focus on DEB due to it being one of the first indications where gene therapy was actively pursued. It has remained the primary focus in gene therapy as there is a huge unmet need given that current treatments, apart from Vyjuvek, are supportive and palliative.

Ali adds: “There is an opportunity for geographical expansion for the existing players in the CGT space, Krystal Biotech’s Vyjuvek and Rheacell Pharmaceutical’s Amesanar, resulting in gene therapies potentially dominating the CGT market in dermatology disorders.”

In February 2025, Krystal Biotech received a positive opinion for Vyjuvek to treat DEB from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), with the final EC decision anticipated in Q2 2025. Aditionally, anticipates a regulatory decision on its DEB mesenchymal stem cell therapy (ABCB5+ MSCs) within the next few years, potentially enabling a launch in the US. Additional market opportunities include further expansion in the EU beyond Germany and the UK.”

Although the landscape outlook appears to be positive, market challenges remain. KOLs noted that the key hurdles are associated with the administration of gene therapies, which pose a challenge to treatment delivery, such as immune responses to vectors or gene products, as well as mutagenicity. However, companies are developing less immunogenic viral vectors and exploring non-invasive methods such as topical delivery systems. For example, in 2023, Krystal Biotech set a precedent for a topical gene therapy utilizing HSV-1 vectors in the dermatology market.

Ali concludes: “Despite the challenges such as safe delivery of genetic material, pricing, and access barriers, GlobalData anticipates significant growth in the global dermatological CGT market in the future. This growth is expected to be driven by two key factors: strong demand from patients seeking curative treatments for their diseases, and widespread interest among both small and mid-pharma companies in discovering the next breakthrough transformative gene therapy to give Krystal Biotech’s Vyjuvek some solid competition.”

Shapiro Administration, Travel Partners Urge Pennsylvanians to be Prepared for Federal REAL ID Enforcement Next Week

With federal REAL ID enforcement just days away, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Mike Carroll, joined officials from the Williamsport Airport, and the American Automobile Association (AAA), to urge Pennsylvanians to make sure they’re prepared for upcoming air travel. These efforts reflect the Shapiro Administration’s commitment to ensuring residents have the information and opportunities they need to be ready for federal REAL ID enforcement.

Getting a REAL ID is optional in Pennsylvania, but beginning next Wednesday, May 7, travelers need to present a REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, or another form of federally-acceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) to board a domestic commercial flight, and enter a military base or other federal facilities that require ID at the door. More than 2.8 million Pennsylvanians have gotten a REAL ID driver’s license or ID card since they became available in the state in 2019.

“People look forward to traveling with friends and family on vacation or business,” said Carroll. “But after next Wednesday, if you don’t have a REAL ID or a passport, you won’t be permitted to board a domestic flight. We’re strongly encouraging everyone to plan ahead for your travel needs before you arrive at the airport, especially if you already have flights planned for the summer.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Hoyer Statement on Trump’s Irresponsible Budget Plan

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Steny H Hoyer (MD-05)

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee, issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s budget request for Fiscal Year 2026:

“Trump’s budget represents the interests of the wealthy few instead of the many American workers, families, and small businesses just trying to stay afloat.

“His proposal cuts nearly a quarter of all non-defense discretionary spending. It terminates programs that help struggling families keep the lights on, keep food on the table, and keep a roof over their heads. The budget puts our nation’s children at risk, eliminating preschool development grants and slashing funding for maternal and child health programs.

“This disastrous budget would undermine America’s health and competitiveness for generations. Trump wants to cut the budget of the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in half. These are the agencies that help identify, treat, and even cure life-threatening diseases and protect Americans from pandemics. He also intends to cut a quarter of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s budget. That will jeopardize early warning systems that help American communities withstand natural disasters, which are becoming more frequent and more dangerous.

“While putting up more obstacles for the American people, Trump’s budget makes it easier for the wealthiest individuals and big corporations to get even further ahead. It cuts the Internal Revenue Service’s budget by a fifth. The IRS has been desperately underfunded and understaffed for decades. Slashing its funding further will make it even harder for the agency to go after wealthy tax cheats who try to get out of paying their fair share. Ultimately, hardworking Americans who dutifully pay their taxes are forced to bear the cost of this loss in revenue.

“How we spend our money reflects our values. Once again, Trump proves he does not care for the American people – only himself.”

  • MIL-OSI: District Court Dismisses Dispute Filed by United Therapeutics Against Liquidia

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

    • Court will not hear cross-claim that challenges the PH-ILD indication in the tentatively approved NDA for YUTREPIA
    • FDA can grant final approval of YUTREPIA after blocking regulatory exclusivity expires on May 23, 2025

MORRISVILLE, N.C., May 02, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Liquidia Corporation (NASDAQ: LQDA), a biopharmaceutical company developing innovative therapies for patients with rare cardiopulmonary disease, today announced that Judge Kelly of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia (District Court) dismissed, without prejudice, the cross-claim filed by United Therapeutics (UTHR) that sought to challenge Liquidia’s amendment to its New Drug Application (NDA) for YUTREPIA™ (treprostinil) inhalation powder, which added the treatment of pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) to the proposed label for YUTREPIA. In its ruling, the District Court determined that UTHR’s claim was unripe and that UTHR had failed to plausibly allege that it has standing.

Dr. Roger Jeffs, CEO, Liquidia said: “We are pleased with the court’s decision to dismiss this cross-claim, specifically holding that UTHR failed to establish standing. We also continue to believe that the FDA was correct to accept, and subsequently tentatively approve, our amended NDA for YUTREPIA to include the PH-ILD indication. We remain laser focused on the potential final approval of YUTREPIA following the expiration of gating regulatory exclusivity on May 23, 2025, and look forward to delivering what we believe will become the prostacyclin of first choice for patients with PAH and PH-ILD and the physicians who treat them.”

UTHR has the right to appeal the Court’s ruling.

The FDA has set a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) goal date for the YUTREPIA NDA of May 24, 2025.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congresswoman Wilson and Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick Visit I.C.E. Broward Transitional Center Following Death of Haitian Woman Detainee

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Frederica S Wilson (24th District of Florida)

Following the death of a Marie Ange Blaise, a 44-year old Haitian Woman Detainee at the Broward Transitional Center on April 25, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) and Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20) visited the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) Broward Transitional Center on Friday, May 2, 2025. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick visited in order to investigate the facility conditions, the cause of death of Marie Ange Blaise, and inquire about the medical procedures of the facility.

“Leaving the Broward Transitional Center, I have no faith in the leadership of the facility or ICE. They don’t even view the immigrants detained in there as humans and didn’t want to answer any questions on Marie. But Marie dying in the Broward Transitional Center is just an example of what is going to continue to happen if we let this administration go unchecked. It doesn’t have to be this way. This is wrong, and as a people, we must and can do better. We are an immigrant-rich society, especially in South Florida,” Congresswoman Frederica Wilson said. “It’s time this government pulls our contracts with GEO, the company who profits off managing countless of these blackhole detention centers. And every member of Congress must visit these ICE detention centers and hold the administration accountable because they want to hide the truth from us. But we want all Americans to see what is happening. This administration has failed to fulfill its responsibility to treat detainees with humanity and to properly maintain its own ICE facilities. That is why I will continue to visit these ICE facilities, and why I plan to introduce a resolution urging members of Congress to exercise their oversight authority by visiting ICE facilities.”

This is the second ICE Detention Facility Congresswoman Frederica Wilson has visited this year. On April 24th, 2025, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson visited the ICE Krome Detention Facility.

“I left the Broward Transitional Center disappointed with what I saw and what I heard,” said Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. “I failed to see any evidence that there were proper procedures in place and that adequate health care was provided. One single doctor to care for hundreds of detainees — with some being forced to sleep on the floor — is inhumane. Marie Blaise’s tragic death will not be a one-off if these cruel conditions persist.”

On May 1st, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, and all the members of the Florida Democratic Congressional Delegation wrote a letter to U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, calling for a transparent investigation into the death of Marie Blaise. For the full text of the letter, click here.

The tour included Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, and their respective staffers. No electronics, phones, press, or external stakeholders were allowed in the facility during the tour. The tour started at 9 A.M. and lasted until approximately 10:45 A.M.

The tour included the following areas: medical clinic, courtroom areas, cafeteria, living cells, religious areas, attorney/client interview rooms and recreation areas.

As part of the tour, ICE officials detailed that there is a ratio of one doctor per 500 detainees. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick also spoke to multiple detainees who detailed sleeping on the floor due to recent overcrowding.

Following the tour, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick held a press gaggle alongside community stakeholders from the Florida Immigrant Coalition and the National Haitian American Elected Officials Network.

“It is disconcerting and outrageous that ICE continues to put people’s lives at risk, with complete disregard for their humanity,” said Tessa Petit, Executive Director of the Florida Immigrant Coalition. “How many deaths will it take for that Office to stop the bleeding?  What will it take for them to be accountable for their inhumane actions, and to end this barbaric treatment of immigrants in and out of detention?

“We demand a full investigation into her death and a commitment to reform immigration detention practices,” said Mary Estimé-Irvin, Councilwoman at the City of North Miami and National Haitian American Elected Officials Network Chair. “The tragic loss of Marie Ange must serve as a catalyst for change—a change that prioritizes humanity, accountability, and the rights of all individuals.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: ICE New York City arrests illegal alien charged with numerous sex crimes

Source: US Immigration and Customs Enforcement

NEW YORK — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Uzbekistan national Ulugbek Davronov April 28. The 21-year-old illegal alien is currently pending charges for rape: oral sexual contact without consent-other than incapacity consent; sexual misconduct: engage in oral sexual contact without consent; attempted assault: with intent to cause physical injury; and sexual abuse: subject another person to sex contact without consent.

“ICE places a high priority on arresting and removing criminal aliens who pose a threat to public safety, especially those who commit heinous crimes against residents of New York City,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations New York City acting Field Office Director William P. Joyce. “Thankfully, ICE officers and agents, with the help of our FBI partners, were able to safely apprehend this alien subsequent to his release from local custody, before he could do any further harm.”

U.S. Border Patrol encountered Davronov Dec. 28, 2022, near Lukeville, Arizona, after he illegally entered the United States from Mexico without admission or parole by an immigration official. Border Patrol officials arrested him and placed him in removal proceedings. On July 28, 2023, an immigration judge ordered him removed in absentia from the U.S. The Queens County Criminal Court arraigned Davronov on the aforementioned charges Feb. 19. ICE New York City identified Davronov as a criminal alien amenable to removal and lodged an immigration detainer with Queens Central Booking that same day. The following day, Queens County Central Booking released him without honoring the request or notifying ICE of his release.

ICE New York City Fugitive Operations officers and Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested Davronov on Staten Island during a targeted operation and transported him to the ICE field office for processing. He is currently detained in ICE custody.

Members of the public can report crimes and suspicious activity by dialing 866-347-2423 or completing ICE’s online tip form.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Governor Calls on DHS for More TSA Officers at NYC Airports

Source: US State of New York

overnor Kathy Hochul today is reminding New Yorkers that beginning May 7, 2025, standard licenses will no longer be accepted to fly within the United States and is urging travelers to be prepared and plan ahead before arriving at the airport to help avoid delays. The Governor also sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security seeking additional Transportation Security Officers for New York’s busiest airports — John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport — to ensure efficient and safe travel during the transition to REAL ID.

“Ahead of the May 7 deadline for airline passengers to provide REAL ID compliant identification, it is critical that travelers in the nation’s busiest airports continue to experience safe and efficient service,” Governor Hochul said. “In addition to calling on the federal government to provide additional TSA officers during this transition and help minimize potential disruptions, I’m also encouraging all New Yorkers who plan to travel domestically in the near future to make arrangements to obtain an acceptable ID and make a plan to avoid delays during this adjustment period.”

On May 7, 2025, travelers flying within the United States will be required to present a REAL ID, Enhanced ID, U.S. Passport or passport card (both of which are REAL ID-compliant), or another form of federally compliant identification to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. In addition to a compliant state-issued ID, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will accept more than one dozen types of identification after the REAL ID Act becomes enforceable for all airline passengers 18 years and older.

Last year was the busiest year on record at both JFK and LaGuardia, with over 96 million passengers combined between the two airports. New York State, in partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has taken significant actions to prepare for the transition to REAL ID, including providing increased staff, educating customers, and developing a clear operational plan at security checkpoints. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has also undertaken an extensive public outreach campaign and made a number of accommodations, including expanded appointment availability to Saturdays and extended weekday hours, in an effort to create more opportunities for New Yorkers to transition to REAL ID. However, if someone does not have imminent travel plans or their license is set to expire, customers are asked to put off a DMV visit so that people who need a REAL or Enhanced ID to travel immediately can be accommodated.

Despite these efforts, delays are anticipated at major travel hubs as travelers across the nation adjust to the new requirement. To reduce delays, additional TSA screenings, and the possibility of not being allowed into the security checkpoint, all travelers should ensure they have a compliant form of identification prior to departure to an airport for either domestic or international travel. While TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the United States, proof of identification for underaged air travelers is subject to airline-specific policies.

The Port Authority recommends that all travelers should check current wait times for TSA security checkpoints at their departure airport terminal before leaving for the airport. Additional airport staff will be available to assist customers at terminals, but travelers should allow for extra travel time, especially during the first few days. Wait times can be viewed below:

New Yorkers who have not yet obtained a REAL ID are strongly encouraged to make an appointment online before their next flight. To avoid mistakes and help New Yorkers prepare, the DMV has implemented several online tools such as a document guide and an online application pre-screening process. New Yorkers applying for a REAL ID are required to provide appropriate proof of residency, and proof of full legal name. There is no additional cost beyond the renewal fee to get a REAL ID.

New Yorkers who have not yet obtained a REAL ID and plan to fly domestically in the near future should remember the following tips:

    • Show Up Early: You will be subject to an identity verification process, additional security screening and delays, so be sure to arrive at the airport well in advance of your flight.
    • Bring your Passport: A US Passport is an acceptable substitute for a REAL ID, so if you have one, bring it.
    • Don’t wait: Preparing for a trip is stressful enough, so don’t wait until the last minute to upgrade your ID. Make an appointment with DMV to get a REAL or Enhanced ID well in advance of your next flight.

For more information about REAL ID and Enhanced Driver Licenses, visit Enhanced or REAL ID and watch DMV’s REAL ID instructional video on YouTube.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Rick Cotton said, “The Port Authority has been working closely with TSA, our terminal operators, and all airport stakeholders to ensure as smooth a transition as possible as the federal government begins requiring REAL ID at TSA checkpoints. We are committed to doing everything possible to support a smooth and efficient experience for all travelers.”

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder said, “DMV is ready to help those who need a REAL ID get one, however, there is no need to rush into a DMV office if you aren’t traveling soon or your ID is not expiring soon. THE DMV will continue offering REAL IDs and Enhanced IDs after May 7. Before coming to a DMV office, everyone should first check their license or ID to make sure it does not have a star or flag on it already. If it does, then it is REAL ID-compliant. If it doesn’t, then we strongly encourage those who need a REAL ID to use our handy online tools to make sure they have what they need, before they visit one of our offices.”

Senator Jeremy Cooney said, “The REAL ID deadline is coming quickly, a reminder for travelers to secure their new IDs, or book an appointment if they have not done so already. I want to thank Governor Hochul for her leadership in preparing for this deadline and ensuring New Yorkers can travel with ease.”

Assemblymember Bill Magnarelli said, “I encourage all New Yorkers to act now in obtaining REAL ID or an Enhanced ID for domestic flights. Preparing for upcoming travel plans requires having the proper documentation for transportation. The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are being proactive and instituting measures to continue to increase security. If you have travel plans, be prepared and get a REAL ID prior to your trip.”

RELEASE: Senator Mullin Meets with Stop Soldier Suicide Leadership, Highlights Veteran Mental Health Support

Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), met with members of the Stop Soldier Suicide organization and received a briefing on the Black Box Project. The Black Box Project saves lives through families temporarily loaning their loved ones’ digital devices for forensic experts to examine the data. The information helps them to gain better insight into crisis situations, which Stop Soldier Suicide then implements into suicide-specific care.
In March, Senator Mullin emphasized his support for those in crisis by reintroducing the 9-8-8 Lifeline Cybersecurity Responsibility Act to strengthen the cybersecurity protocols for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

“Our service members and veterans deserve better,” said Senator Mullin. “Suicide is a heartbreaking tragedy and I look forward to the day when suicide is no longer an expected risk of military service. Stop Soldier Suicide is doing incredibly critical work with the Black Box Project in unlocking the warning signs of military suicide.”
“At Stop Soldier Suicide, we are committed to ending the military suicide crisis through innovative, technology-driven solutions. Our meeting with Senator Mullin underscores the importance of scalable, data-informed approaches that not only serve veterans and their families but also offer insights applicable to other high-risk groups, such as first responders and tradespeople. Together, we can create a future where every veteran, and every individual at risk, receives the support they need — before it’s too late,” Brian E. Kinsella, Co-Founder and Chairman of Stop Soldier Suicide
Members of the organization in attendance included the following:
Brian E. Kinsella, Co-Founder and Chairman
    Austin Grimes, Chief Product Officer

  • MIL-OSI USA: VIDEO: Pressley Challenges Republicans to Oppose Devastating SNAP Cuts, Met With Silence

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07)

“SNAP is a true lifeline, and this is a matter of life and death. If Republicans have their way, this reconciliation bill will increase hunger and food insecurity.”

Pressley Also Introduced Amendments to Demand Transparency, Protect Federal Workers’ Pensions, Defend Veterans & People with Disabilities

    Video (YouTube)

WASHINGTON – In the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s markup of the Republican reconciliation bill, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) slammed Republicans for their complicity and willingness to allow hunger and food insecurity to skyrocket by supporting the bill’s proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In response to Rep. Lateefah Simon’s (CA-12) amendment to restrict the reduction of SNAP, Congresswoman Pressley demanded Republicans answer to the families who would go hungry by way of this reconciliation bill – and she was met with silence.

Congresswoman Pressley also introduced several amendments to the legislation to better reveal who would be harmed by the bill and to defend hard-earned benefits for veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Congresswoman Pressley’s amendments to the reconciliation bill would:

    • Ensure that federal workers who are veterans or have disabilities can keep their FERS annuity supplement – a critical, earned benefit that helps bridge the gap between early retirement and the start of Social Security.
    • Direct the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to expose how this bill will impact people across the federal workforce – including women, older Americans, workers of color, veterans, and workers with disabilities – who dedicate their lives to delivering essential services in communities across the country.

Republicans rejected every amendment proposed by Pressley and her Democratic colleagues.

A full transcript of the Congresswoman’s remarks in response to Rep. Simon’s amendment on SNAP is available below and video is available here.

Transcript: Pressley Demands Answers to Republican Proposed SNAP Cuts that Would Increase Hunger, Instead is Met with Silence

House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform

    April 30, 2025

Congresswoman Simon, I’m so glad that you’re here.

I always say the people closest to the pain should be closest to the power. You have been closest to the pain, and we are so glad that you were here.

You never forget the plot, and the plot is the people.

I appreciate the Congresswoman for introducing this amendment.

SNAP is a true lifeline, and this is a matter of life and death.

If Republicans have their way, this reconciliation bill will increase hunger and food insecurity.

More than 42 million Americans – 42 million – participate in SNAP each month. This includes 16.9 million children, 4.5 million people with disabilities, and 1.2 million veterans. Over 1.1 million people in Massachusetts rely on SNAP.

    Let’s talk about economic impact.

Every $1 in SNAP benefits generates $1.50 in economic activity.

SNAP dollars help to pay the wages of grocery store clerks, of truckers who deliver food, manufacturers who make food packaging, and the farmer who grows food.

There is nothing efficient about making people hungrier and sicker.

Is there any single Republican who is willing to speak out to make sure that children, people with disabilities and veterans, do not go hungry?

    Anyone?

    Silence.

This bill is a shame and a sham.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Your guide to adopting a dog in Canberra

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

    • This story includes some lesser-known considerations for adopting a dog.

Dogs are wonderful companions that bring joy to their families.

Owning a dog can help people to:

    • be more active
    • feel less lonely
    • socialise more
    • find a sense of purpose.

Before you bring a dog into your family, there are a few things to consider. Here are a few points that people don’t often talk about:

Each dog has a different personality

You may have expected that your new pup will love fetch and swimming. But then find they prefer tug and digging instead.

Spend some time getting to know your dog. Discovering their personality and temperament can be rewarding. Their genetics and history can inform how they react to different people, toys and other animals. Breed can also play a part in their temperament.

It can take three months for your dog to adjust to their new environment

Moving into a new home can be stressful for a dog. This is common for dogs who have come from a noisy shelter environment.

In the first three days, your dog will be decompressing. They may seem scared or unsure. During this time, you might not see their ‘true’ personality.

After three weeks, your pup will start settling in. Their personality will start to show as they get more comfortable. After three months it’s likely that your dog will be comfortable and trust you. It’s important to take this time with them and not try to rush them

You will always need to care for your dog – even on your hardest days

Taking your dog on a walk on a beautiful Sunday is wonderful, but not every day will be easy.

Remember that dogs still need to go for a walk even when you don’t feel like it. Your dog will still need to be looked after when you’re feeling sick, sad or stressed. Consider if you need a support system to help you look after your pet on difficult days.

Owning a dog will change the way your home looks

When you have a dog, your floor may always have a few toys strewn about. There may also be stray pieces of dog food and dog hair on it.

You may also need to change the way you decorate your home. This is to keep fragile items out of your dog’s reach. You should also consider if you are ready to clean up after your dog potentially having toileting accidents inside.

Your social life will look a bit different

Most dogs can be left alone for hours at a time. There are also pet-friendly venues around Canberra.

Even so, you should prepare for times where you need to leave an event early to be with your dog.

There may also be times where your pet is unwell. You may need to miss social occasions to care for them. Consider if these are sacrifices you are willing to make for your pet.

    Travelling can be more challenging

Looking for dog-friendly accommodation while traveling can be difficult and expensive. It can also be hard to find someone to look after your pet if you plan on leaving them at home.

Before getting a dog, ask friends or family if they would be willing to look after your pet while you travel. You can also check out the costs of pet-boarding or pet-sitters. It’s important to be aware of these potential costs before getting a dog.

    Dogs cost money

In addition to buying dog food, toys, and other treats, in the ACT, owners must register, microchip, de-sex their dog which costs money.  There are also licences and permits you may need to obtain if you wish to breed your dog or if there are 4 or more dogs living at your residence.

Dogs also need regular check-ups and vaccinations to keep them happy and healthy. Dogs can also have accidents from time-to-time which need to be seen to by a veterinarian, often at short notice. Consider whether you can financially look after a dog to give it the best life possible.

Moving your pet interstate and overseas can be costly

Most Australian airlines will not allow pets in the cabin. You might want to consider if you’re comfortable with your pet in the cargo hold, or if you’re comfortable driving interstate with your pet.

If an international move is on the cards during your pets’ lifespan, you need to factor in the extra cost of bringing them. Moving your pet internationally can be costly.

Having realistic expectations of what having a dog looks like is important for making informed decisions. A common reason for dogs being surrendered is because owners weren’t aware of the challenges of pet ownership.

  • MIL-OSI USA: New military occupational specialty supports Army space vision

    Source: United States Army

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army announced today the creation of a new military occupational specialty for enlisted personnel supporting Army space operations – the 40D, Space Operations Specialist.

“We know from all the Army warfighting concepts that we need space capability,” said Lt. Gen. Sean Gainey, commanding general U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command. “These Soldiers will become the experts we turn to during the next conflict.”

Army space professionals support unique assets to interdict, or disrupt, adversaries’ use of space capabilities, ensuring Army forces gain and maintain the initiative to fight from positions of relative advantage in all domains. As part of the Army’s Space Vision Supporting Multidomain Operations, these Soldiers provide close space support to Army conventional and special operations forces, protecting them from space-enabled attacks.

To date, the preponderance of expertise and experience in space operations resides in the officer corps instead of the non-commissioned officer corps. This new space operations MOS will ensure that specialists through command sergeants major arrive at Army space formations with experience and expertise in space operations.

“Establishing the Space Operations MOS is a zero-growth effort,” said Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command. “A space enlisted MOS will help stabilize career progression and retention for Soldiers and NCOs who temporarily leave their current MOSs for three years to support space operations.”

Ultimately, the space operations MOS will produce and retain well-rounded technical and tactical experts. They will learn all aspects of space operations and global missile defense, thereby becoming the best possible senior enlisted advisors.

Personnel previously “loaned” to the space community will transition back to air defense, signal, and intelligence units, but the manpower authorizations will convert to space operations for accessions open to every MOS in the Army.

  • MIL-OSI USA: NEA Response to Administration’s Proposed “Skinny Budget”

    Source: US National Education Union

WASHINGTON — Earlier today, the Trump Administration released its proposed “skinny budget,” which includes deep and harmful cuts to education funding — slashing $12 billion from the Department of Education. In response, National Education Association President Becky Pringle issued the following statement:

“For too long, parents, educators and students have pleaded with elected leaders to fulfill their promise to every student and provide the resources that give them every opportunity to thrive. And for too long, our leaders have failed us — this is yet another example.

“As we approach Teacher Appreciation Week, instead of praising teachers for all they do, this budget is an insult to educators, students and parents. Rather than investing in opportunity and equity, this proposal advances a harmful agenda that eliminates essential programs millions of Americans rely on every day.

“We demand that our elected leaders stand up for what truly matters — protecting critical public services for students and rejecting massive giveaways to billionaires like Elon Musk. Our students deserve the investment, and the American people deserve leaders who prioritize their well-being over the wealth of a few.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Cramer, Rep. Fedorchak Urge Congressional Leaders to Reform Energy Tax Credits, Prioritize Grid Reliability

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND)
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND)are calling on congressional leadership to reevaluate and reform federal energy tax credits to better align with America’s goals of energy reliability, affordability, and security.
In a letter sent to House and Senate Republican leaders and Commitee Chairs, the two former state utility regulators warn current energy tax policy distorts markets and weakens the electric grid by disproportionately subsidizing intermittent power sources like wind and solar.
“We understand state and regional power markets and strongly believe smart, targeted federal investments in our energy sector can be in the national interest. Multiple federal statutes state the public policy of the United States is to provide a reliable and resilient grid, yet all too often our tax code subsidizes the opposite,” they write. “Regrettably, it continues to shower intermittent energy generators with incentives and resources without regard to its contribution to a rapidly degrading electrical grid.”
The letter raises concerns about the state of the U.S. power grid, citing a recent report from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) found 11 of 18 Regional Transmission Organizations face an elevated risk of resource adequacy shortfalls. The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO)—which serves 45 million Americans—is at high risk of not having enough electricity to meet demand, even under normal conditions.
Cramer and Fedorchak call on Congress to critically assess energy tax credits passed in the Inflation Reduction Act using clear criteria:
Cramer and Fedorchak are calling for a responsible phase-out of costly tax credits like 45Y and 48E, which favor only zero-emission sources while overlooking key attributes like reliability, affordability, and dispatchability. They highlight these credits send the wrong signals to the energy market and contribute to growing risks to grid stability. Instead, they support targeted incentives such as 45Q for carbon capture and 45U for existing nuclear power—tools that reduce emissions while helping maintain dependable, affordable electricity.
“Generators should be paid for their performance; not how good they make policymakers feel,” they conclude. “As we continue to formulate the parameters of an American energy dominance agenda, we stand ready to work with you and other Republican elected officials to deliver on the mandate the American people entrusted with us.”

    Julie Rodewald, Los Osos

Julie Rodewald’s dedication to democracy and public service has shaped lives in San Luis Obispo for decades. She served for 33 years in the Office of the SLO County Clerk-Recorder, ensuring everyone had the right to vote. Even in retirement, she continues to advocate for voting rights. She serves on the Board of Directors for the SLO County League of Women Voters and launched the Empowering the Voters of Tomorrow, Today initiative, which registered or pre-registered over 3,500 local high school students. She worked with the Latino Voter Engagement Project to help Spanish speakers in the community exercise their right to vote, and even helped create a short film, Forever Voters, to inspire civic engagement. Julie’s dedication to ensuring every citizen exercises their right to vote is truly inspiring.

    Cherie Eulau, Ventura

Cherie Eulau taught for 27 years in the Ventura Unified School District, shaping generations of young people in the process. Her classes on World History, Government, and Economics inspired many to pursue careers in public service. She went above and beyond, developing interactive lesson plans that helped students truly understand the past and how it shapes the present. She also encouraged her students to get involved in the community, partnering with organizations like the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE) on issues such as environmental justice and voting rights. Cherie brings joyful optimism and fiery energy to igniting the minds and hearts of local youth, encouraging them to raise their voices and change the world around them.

    Source: US State of Idaho

Home Newsroom AG Labrador Announces Prison Sentences for Three Idaho Men in Child Pornography Cases

BOISE — Attorney General Raúl Labrador has announced that two men in eastern Idaho and one man in northern Idaho were sentenced on April 28, 2025, for the sexual exploitation of children.
Gregg McFarlane, 51, was sentenced in Shoshone County on two counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child by Possession of Sexually Exploitative Material (child pornography) and one count of Possessing Visual Representations of the Sexual Abuse of Children—a new law targeting images of child sex abuse generated using artificial intelligence. In August 2024, Detective Jim Bohr, using undercover law enforcement computers, identified child sexual abuse material (CSAM) being uploaded from an address associated with McFarlane in Pinehurst, Idaho. In October 2024, a residential search warrant was executed at McFarlane’s address, during which various electronic devices and a child-sized sex doll were seized. McFarlane admitted to receiving links to CSAM files through torrent sites and searching for CSAM on those same sites. A forensic examination of McFarlane’s devices revealed over 200 files containing CSAM of children as young as four years old. The examination also uncovered generative AI images of what appeared to be realistic children, some as young as five, engaged in sexual acts.
Judge Barbara Duggan sentenced McFarlane to a total of 10 years in prison, ordering that he be eligible for parole after three years. The investigation was led by Detective Jim Bohr of the Meridian Police Department, who serves in the Attorney General’s ICAC Unit, and was assisted by the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, and ICAC affiliates from the Moscow and Post Falls Police Departments. The case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General James Haws.
Skylar Reed, 25, was sentenced in Bannock County on two counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child by Possession of Sexually Exploitative Material (child pornography). In July 2024, the ICAC Unit received a CyberTip indicating that two accounts belonging to Reed had downloaded CSAM. In November 2024, a residential search warrant was executed on Reed’s residence and devices. Reed admitted in an interview with investigators that he had downloaded and shared CSAM with others online. An examination of Reed’s phones revealed numerous files of CSAM, including material depicting children being raped.
Judge Robert Naftz sentenced Reed to a total of 10 years in prison, ordering that he be eligible for parole after two and a half years. The investigation was led by Detective Irina Leach of the Pocatello Police Department, who serves in the Attorney General’s ICAC Unit, and was assisted by the Boise Police Department, Pocatello Police Department, and Madison County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorneys General Madison Allen and Austin Young.
Seth Tanaka, 23, was sentenced in Bonneville County on two counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child by Possession of Sexually Exploitative Material (child pornography). In February 2024, the ICAC Unit received a CyberTip that a social media account belonging to Tanaka had uploaded multiple files of CSAM. In August 2024, a residential search warrant was obtained for Tanaka’s property and devices. Officers found CSAM on Tanaka’s phone depicting post-pubescent female minors engaged in lascivious acts and poses. In an interview, Tanaka admitted to viewing children of all ages—from infants to teens—but stated that his primary sexual interest was in developing female children.
Judge Michael Whyte sentenced Tanaka to a total of 10 years in prison but retained jurisdiction over the case for up to one year. During this period of retained jurisdiction, also known as a rider, Tanaka will be incarcerated and receive treatment and programming. Judge Whyte will then determine whether Tanaka should be placed on probation or serve the remainder of his sentence. The investigation was led by Detective Jared Mendenhall of the Idaho Falls Police Department, who serves in the Attorney General’s ICAC Unit, and was assisted by the Idaho Falls Police Department, Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, and Pocatello Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Madison Allen.
“Idaho is committed to confronting every form of child exploitation—whether buried in the depths of the internet or advanced through new threats like AI-generated abuse material. My office will continue to pursue these threats with every tool we have. I commend the diligent work of our ICAC Unit, law enforcement partners, and prosecutors who brought these offenders to justice,” stated Attorney General Labrador.

Source: Office of United States Attorneys

SAN DIEGO – Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of California filed 124 border-related cases this week, including charges of assault on a federal officer, bringing in aliens for financial gain, reentering the U.S. after deportation, and importation of controlled substances.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California is the fourth-busiest federal district, largely due to a high volume of border-related crimes. This district, encompassing San Diego and Imperial counties, shares a 140-mile border with Mexico. It includes the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the world’s busiest land border crossing, connecting San Diego (America’s eighth largest city) and Tijuana (Mexico’s second largest city).

In addition to reactive border-related crimes, the Southern District of California also prosecutes a significant number of proactive cases related to terrorism, organized crime, drugs, white-collar fraud, violent crime, cybercrime, human trafficking and national security. Recent developments in those and other significant areas of prosecution can be found here.

A sample of border-related arrests this week:

    • On April 28, Jose Maria Murillo Estrada, a Mexican national, was arrested and charged with Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding Federal Officers and reentry after deportation. According to a complaint, the assault happened after Murillo attempted to make entry into the United States from Mexico through the San Ysidro Port of Entry by running through vehicle primary lanes and was intercepted by officers.
    • On April 27, Emma Alejandra Medina, a U.S. citizen, was arrested and charged with Attempted Bringing in Aliens for Financial Gain. According to a complaint, Medina was captain of a boat that was transporting eight undocumented immigrants on San Diego Bay.
    • On April 26, Jorge Alexandro Tellez, a U.S. citizen, was arrested and charged with Importation of a Controlled Substance. According to a complaint, Tellez was taken into custody by Customs and Border Protection officers after he attempted to cross the border in his vehicle in the San Ysidro Port of Entry’s SENTRI lane with 286 pounds of methamphetamine concealed in all four doors, the seats, the spare tire, the tailgate, and in multiple tool bags located inside the vehicle.

Also this week, a number of defendants with criminal records were convicted by a jury or sentenced for border-related crimes such as illegally re-entering the U.S. after previous deportation. Here are a few of those cases:

    • On May 1, Juan Morales-Lopez, a Mexican national who was last deported in November 2024 and immediately returned on December 10th, was sentenced in federal court to 18 months in custody consecutive to 12 months custody for violating the terms of his supervised released for his earlier illegal entry conviction, for a total of 30 months in custody. Morales-Lopez has 10 illegal entry felony convictions in total and has been removed from the United States a total of 35 times.
    • On May 1, Jose Ramon Ochoa-Monteverde, a Mexican national living in the United States on a Visa, was sentenced in federal court to 84 months in custody for his role as a coordinator and courier for a drug trafficking organization based in Mexico, Imperial Valley, and the Central District of California. In one instance, Ochoa-Monteverde loaded a tractor trailer with duffel bags containing 106.38 kilograms of methamphetamine at a truck stop in Brawley, CA.
    • On April 28, Alejandro Gutierrez-Aguilar, who was previously convicted of Possession with Intent to Distribute in 2014, was sentenced in federal court to 30 months in custody for again entering the U.S illegally.

Pursuant to the Department’s Operation Take Back America priorities, federal law enforcement has focused immigration prosecutions on undocumented aliens who are engaged in criminal activity in the U.S., including those who commit drug and firearms crimes, who have serious criminal records, or who have active warrants for their arrest. Federal authorities have also been prioritizing investigations and prosecutions against drug, firearm, and human smugglers and those who endanger and threaten the safety of our communities and the law enforcement officers who protect the community.

The immigration cases were referred or supported by federal law enforcement partners, including Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE ERO), Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with the support and assistance of state and local law enforcement partners.

Indictments and criminal complaints are merely allegations and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
