  • MIL-OSI Australia: Australian first technology delivering better care at the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

As part of ACT Government’s ‘One Government, One Voice’ program, we are transitioning this website across to our . You can access everything you need through this website while it’s happening.

    Released 03/04/2025

A new state-of-the-art system is speeding up the delivery of samples from the Emergency Department to ACT Pathology, allowing clinicians to receive results faster and start patient treatment earlier.

The first of its kind in Australia, the Tempus600 is an automated sample tube delivery system connecting the Emergency Department to ACT Pathology on the Canberra Hospital campus.

Team members in the Emergency Department place a patient sample contained in a test tube in a ‘hole in the wall’, and the sample is delivered directly to laboratory analysers, with no human intervention.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the new sample delivery system eliminates manual processes to prepare, pack and unpack samples, reduces the possibility of error, and frees up time to focus on other important tasks.

“Most clinical sample delivery systems require multiple steps to prepare and send a sample, which can create a bottleneck at certain points in the process of sending a sample to the laboratory,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.

“The new Tempus system is one touch technology – put the clinical sample in the Tempus machine, and the system does the rest. Samples take approximately 40 seconds to travel from the Emergency Department to the lab in Pathology, which is a big time-saver when processing around 100,000 clinical samples each year.”

“This new technology means samples can be analysed sooner, which leads to faster patient diagnosis, earlier treatment, and a shorter stay in hospital. The system is also directly linked into the Digital Health Record, maintaining accuracy and assurance of the right test results for the right patients.

“In addition to speeding up the delivery of clinical samples, the Tempus system also provides greater consistency in how long it takes for results to be available. When treating a seriously ill patient in Emergency, these factors can make all the difference to their health outcomes.”

Quotes attributable to Greg Brylski, Executive Director of Pathology and Allied Health, Canberra Health Services:

“The implementation of the Tempus Pathology system at Canberra Health Services offers a significant advancement in delivering patient centred care. The Tempus streamlines pathology workflows allowing faster access to patient results, without compromising patient care.

“This Australian first innovation brings pathology services closer to the patient, facilitating quicker diagnoses while efficiently reducing administrative burdens on the healthcare system, when our healthcare professionals are required to focus on patient care.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Hudson, NC Colleagues Champion Legislation to Support NC Firefighters, EMS Personnel

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08)

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-09) joined Representative Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03), along with Representatives Virginia Foxx (NC-05), Chuck Edwards (NC-11), David Rouzer (NC-07), Pat Harrigan (NC-10), Addison McDowell (NC-06), and Tim Moore (NC-14) in introducing legislation to allow North Carolina volunteer firefighters and emergency medical service (EMS) personnel to join a state or local retirement plan.

“North Carolina’s firefighters and EMS personnel, like those involved in the Hurricane Helene relief efforts, risk their lives every day to keep our communities safe,” said Rep. Hudson. “These brave heroes deserve access to the same retirement benefits as their state-employed counterparts. I’m proud to support this legislation to ensure they are taken care of.”

“North Carolinians depend on the selfless service of first responders every single day,” said Rep. Murphy. “It is only fitting that these dedicated individuals should be able to depend on the government to provide them with a reliable retirement plan. The First Responders Retirement Parity Act ensures just compensation for their contributions to community safety and support for when their service comes to an end.”

Rep. Hudson with Puppy Creek Fire Department Volunteer Fire Chief John Joseph, as well as local first responders and officials.

    Background

The current tax code prevents full-time nonprofit firefighters and EMS personnel from joining the state retirement system. In North Carolina, 74% of fire departments are non-profit and employ 5,527 paid personnel who could be affected.

This legislation would amend the code to include these volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel in governmental retirement plans.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Reps. Richard Hudson, Troy Carter Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Strengthen Wireless Networks, Bolster U.S. Competition With China

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC), who serves as the Chairman of the Communications and Technology Subcommittee on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and U.S. Representative Troy Carter, Sr. (D-LA) introduced the Open RAN Outreach Act. This bipartisan bill will strengthen U.S. wireless networks and ultimately protect our small and rural communications network providers from being reliant on Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-backed technology companies, such as Huawei.

“By ensuring our small and rural telecom providers have the support needed to deploy technologies, like Open RAN, we can promote innovation and create jobs,” said Chairman Hudson. “This legislation paves the way for greater U.S. competition with China and a more secure, resilient wireless network landscape.”

“This is a pivotal step toward strengthening our nation’s telecommunications infrastructure,” said Rep. Carter. “By providing technical assistance and outreach to small telecom providers, especially in rural areas like Louisiana, this bill opens the door to a more secure, diverse, and competitive wireless network landscape. The shift to Open RAN technology not only enhances national security by reducing reliance on foreign-made equipment but also boosts American manufacturing and fosters innovation in 5G. This bill ensures that rural communities are no longer left behind in the race for cutting-edge technology, driving down costs and empowering smaller carriers to build stronger, more resilient networks.”

    Background

The COVID-19 pandemic and recent natural disasters underscored the importance of securing domestic supply chains and telecommunications networks. Huawei and other untrusted companies with the support of government money from China have been able to offer lower costs to entice small and rural providers to use their technology. Promoting a more competitive market of trusted alternative vendors to provide 5G equipment remains an important strategic component to protect U.S. networks.

A closed or proprietary network has one vendor or manufacturer for end-to-end network equipment. Open RAN technology can help diversify communications technology by being an open network infrastructure that can have multiple components from multiple manufacturers. The Open RAN Outreach Act requires technical assistance and outreach to be made available on Open RAN technologies by the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). This will give small and rural providers information and support to deploy Open RAN technologies if providers would like to implement this technology.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Adams Statement on the Passage of the Continuing Resolution

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Alma Adams (12th District of North Carolina)

Washington, DC—Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, PhD (NC-12), Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development and senior member of the House Agriculture Committee, released a statement following the passage of the continuing resolution.

“The continuing resolution fight was about more than just keeping the government open,” said Congresswoman Adams. “It was about refusing to turn over even more power to President Trump, Elon Musk, and standing against these devastating cuts.”

The continuing resolution includes deep cuts to critical programs and funding for Charlotteans:

    • $700 million in cuts to rent subsidies for low-income households and working Americans. Meanwhile, lack of affordable housing and eviction rates continue to rise in Mecklenburg County.
    • $116 million in cuts to the Small Business Administration which will eliminate programs for Charlotte’s more than 40,000 small businesses.
    • $2 billion in cuts to airport, roadway, and port safety projects. This comes after the tragic DC plane crash in January that departed from Charlotte.
    • Underfunds homeless services by $168 million. Mecklenburg County’s homeless rate grew by 3% over the last year.
    • Fails to fully fund The Emergency Food Assistance Program by $20 million. Nearly 12% of Mecklenburg County households are food insecure.
    • Fails to renew $293 million in bipartisan emergency preparedness and disaster mitigation projects as Western North Carolina still works to recover from Hurricane Helene.
    • Fails to provide valuable community project funding to local organizations and municipalities that offer services like healthcare, housing assistance, food security, and other critical community needs.

“I have never celebrated a government shutdown, but I cannot understate the harm that will come from this bill,” Adams continued. “As this administration continues to wage their wars on education, healthcare, social security and federal employees, Congress has given them a blank check. It’s a disservice to all our constituencies.”

Rather than giving line-item budget allocations, the continuing resolution allocates agency funds in large pots of money without directing where they specifically go. This gives President Trump a “blank check” as he is able to reallocate or cut these funds as he sees fit, with few limitations.

“As we navigate the impacts of this disastrous bill, my priority remains taking care of my constituents,” said Congresswoman Adams. “If anyone in my district is suffering from the fallout of the continuing resolution, I encourage them to reach out to my offices and we will assist you however we can.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Adams Statement on Voting Against Continuing Resolution

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Alma Adams (12th District of North Carolina)

WASHINGTON, DC— Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, PhD (NC-12), Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development, released a statement following her vote against the continuing resolution.

“At a time when my constituents are struggling to make ends meet, the House Republican budget bill looks to slash everything from healthcare and food assistance to veterans benefits and housing support,” said Congresswoman Adams. “This bill will harm our working families, small businesses, seniors, students, and underserved communities in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. I stand against this reckless bill so I can stand with the people of my district.”

The continuing resolution targets programs and subsidies Charlotteans use every day:

The continuing resolution also fails to direct how most of the funds will be used, giving President Trump even greater authority to freeze or reappropriate the federal dollars included in the continuing resolution.

“This bill is House Republicans’ attempt to give President Trump a blank check to enact his unpopular, harmful agenda,” said Congresswoman Adams. “We have already seen this administration wage wars on education, food assistance, housing, healthcare, and this will only seek to embolden them. I urge North Carolinians to call their member of congress and senators and make their voices heard during this critical time for our country.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Moore, Booker, Adams, and Underwood Introduce Resolution Commemorating National Black Midwives Day

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Alma Adams (12th District of North Carolina)

Today, Representative Gwen Moore (WI-04), along with Representatives Alma Adams, PhD (NC-12) and Lauren Underwood (IL-14), both co-chairs of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, introduced a resolution designating March 14, 2025, as “Black Midwives Day.” This House resolution, and its Senate companion led by Senator Cory Booker (NJ), celebrates Black midwives’ legacy of culturally congruent care and strives to rectify racial disparities in maternal health outcomes.

“Black midwives practice time-honored techniques that have flourished for years,” said Representative Gwen Moore. “This resolution not only honors and uplifts Black midwives’ work toward reproductive justice, but it also invites federal, state, and local governments to embrace Black midwifery as a model of patient-centered, culturally sensitive care that beats systemic barriers and improves health outcomes for mothers and their babies,” Moore added.

“There is a growing maternal health crisis that affects all moms in our country. On top of that, the harsh reality is that Black people in the United States suffer from life threatening pregnancy complications twice as often as White people,” said Senator Cory Booker. “The Midwifery Model of Care is a proven method that improves pregnancy outcomes across the board.  Recognizing Black Midwives Day and all of the work midwives do to provide comprehensive and affordable health care reaffirms our commitment in Congress to ensuring equitable pregnancy outcomes for all.”

“Black midwifery is a deep-rooted practice that speaks to Black history, tradition, culture, and maternal health,” said Representative Alma Adams. “For centuries, Black midwives were the main source of perinatal care for Black communities, safeguarding our health in the face of medical discrimination and barriers to care. As we look to address the Black maternal health crisis in our country today, let’s celebrate the legacy of Black midwives by committing to overcome racial discrimination in healthcare and keeping our mothers safe.”

“For centuries, Black midwives have played an invaluable role in making sure moms and babies receive culturally competent care and lifesaving support,” said Representative Lauren Underwood. “As Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, I’m so proud to join my colleagues in introducing this resolution to uplift the contributions of Black midwives, both past and present, and the critical work that they do to end disparities. Their commitment to making sure that childbirth is a time filled with joy for every family should be celebrated and remembered.”

“The National Black Midwives Alliance strongly supports and endorses the resolution for Black Midwives Day. Black midwives have long been at the forefront of maternal and infant care, addressing disparities and ensuring culturally centered, holistic birth experiences for Black families. Recognizing Black Midwives Day affirms the invaluable contributions of Black midwives, past and present, and promotes continued investment in their work to improve maternal health outcomes nationwide,” said Jamarah Amani of the National Black Midwives Alliance.

“BMMA (Black Mamas Matter Alliance) proudly endorses the resolution recognizing March 14 as Black Midwives Day, a critical step in honoring the invaluable contributions of Black midwives to maternal and infant health in the United States. For centuries, Black midwives have been the cornerstone of their communities, providing culturally centered, life-affirming care that improves birth outcomes and saves lives.

Amidst the ongoing maternal health care crisis and deepening maternity care deserts, the expansion and full integration of Black midwifery into the U.S. healthcare system is not just necessary—it is urgent. BMMA calls on policymakers, healthcare institutions, and communities to invest in Black midwives by expanding training pathways, eliminating structural barriers, and ensuring equitable reimbursement for midwifery-led care. This resolution affirms the power of Black midwifery as a key strategy for advancing maternal health equity, reducing racial disparities, and supporting the reproductive autonomy of Black birthing people. We stand in unwavering solidarity with Black midwives and the National Black Midwives Alliance in the fight to protect, uplift, and expand Black midwifery for generations to come,” said Angela D. Aina, Executive Director, BMMA.

“Black midwives are the backbone of maternal health,” said Haven Midwifery Collective.

“We commend Congresswoman Gwen Moore and Senator Cory Booker for introducing the National Black Midwives Day Resolution in recognition of the essential contributions of Black midwives to reproductive health. Their leadership underscores the importance of acknowledging and elevating the vital role Black midwives play in providing compassionate, culturally centered care, advancing health equity, and challenging systemic disparities. To truly honor this work, U.S. Government must continue to support and invest in pathways to midwifery and strive toward a health care system that provides the highest quality care and ensures that all birthing experiences are met with dignity, respect, and compassion,” said Breana N. Lipscomb, MPH, Senior Advisor, Maternal Health & Rights at Center for Reproductive Rights.

“Birth centers are a public health solution,” said Trinisha Williams, LM, CM, MPH, President, American Association of Birth Centers (AABC).

Access to Black Midwives is a critical solution to address the maternal mortality crisis in the US. Black Midwives Day is an opportunity to highlight the need for and uplift the work of Black Midwives,” said Jessica Brumley CNM, PhD, FACNM, President of the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

2.2 million women of childbearing age live in maternity care deserts lacking access to hospitals and birth centers.[1] This maternal health gap is especially acute for Black birthing people, who suffer maternal morbidity two times as often as white child bearers.[2] Responding to this crisis and recognizing the need for community-driven interventions, the resolution directs stakeholders to develop and enact policy solutions that promote a diverse perinatal workforce, strengthen training pathways for Black midwives, and fully incorporate midwifery into the maternity care system.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Beatty & Brown Lead Ohio Dems in Demanding HUD Reverse Ohio Field Office Cuts

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (3rd District of Ohio)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representatives Joyce Beatty (OH-03) and Shontel Brown (OH-11) led Ohio’s Democratic delegation – Representatives Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Greg Landsman (OH-01), and Emilia Sykes (OH-13) – in a letter urging U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner to reverse the Trump Administration’s disastrous efforts to cut staff and close HUD’s Regional and Field Offices in Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio.

HUD Field Offices help enforce fair housing policies, respond to local housing crises, and promote access to affordable and safe housing for hard working Americans. In addition to underwriting mortgage loans, addressing fair housing claims, and providing guidance to landlords, tenants, and municipalities, the Cleveland and Columbus Field Offices manage and distribute the millions of dollars in federal funds that HUD sends to Ohio annually. More than 422,000 Ohioans – 71% of whom are seniors, children, or people with disabilities – rely on federal rental assistance to afford housing. The planned local staff reductions and office closures would significantly weaken the effective administration of these housing assistance programs on the ground, leaving only a handful of civil servants to carry out a slate of essential services that keep Ohio workers and families housed.

“At a time when the cost of housing continues to rise, homelessness has reached historic levels, and communities face increasing economic uncertainty, HUD must remain a fully staffed and functioning agency,” Brown and Beatty wrote in the letter. “According to the latest gap report, Ohio is facing a shortage of 264,083 rental homes that are affordable and available to extremely low income households. The closure of field offices and mass staff reductions will create service gaps that disproportionately harm vulnerable populations, including low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities.”

The letter urges Secretary Turner to reconsider harmful reductions to HUD Field Offices, particularly in Ohio, and demands full transparency regarding the decision-making process for these closures.

“HUD staff carry out the bipartisan laws that Congress enacted to fight homelessness, housing discrimination, and make the American Dream a reality for more Americans,” said Amy Riegel, Executive Director of the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO). “Without enough personnel to implement these laws, they become broken promises, and more people will lose their housing and wind up homeless. HUD has opportunities for improvement, but recklessly gutting the agency harms a lot of people who are just trying to keep a roof over their heads.”

“Habitat for Humanity of Ohio applauds the steadfast leadership of Representatives Beatty and Brown amidst the growing housing crisis here in Ohio and across the nation,” said Ryan Miller, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Ohio. “They continue to emphasize the need for housing solutions, not barriers. Now is certainly not the time to shutter HUD’s programs and remove critical public servants responsible for providing life-saving services to the most vulnerable among us. HUD field staff ensure basic housing services are attainable and serve as a core component of Ohio’s communities.”

“The Department of Housing and Urban Development is an essential partner for Ohio’s community development nonprofits, providing vital resources that strengthen neighborhoods and create homeownership opportunities across our state,” said Torey Hollingsworth, Executive Director of the Ohio Community Development Corporation Association. “Cutting HUD staff and field offices puts these crucial resources at risk, and we appreciate members of the Ohio delegation urging the administration to ensure continuity of HUD’s important services in our state.”

“HUD’s regional and field offices and the staff that work there are essential to keeping everyday Ohioans housed and stable,” said Ayonna Blue Donald, Vice President of the Ohio Market at Enterprise Community Partners. “Abrupt reductions and closures will cause real harm—not just to programs on paper, but to hardworking families increasingly burdened by rising housing costs. Enterprise is committed to working with the Administration and Congress to improve efficiency and accountability and identify commonsense solutions that meet the needs of our local communities.”

Ohio’s Democratic delegation remains committed to ensuring Ohio families have access to safe, affordable housing. The Members will continue to monitor HUD’s actions and hold the administration accountable so Ohio communities can access the resources and services they deserve.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Beatty Backs Booker’s Historic Stand Against Musk-MAGA Power Grab & Abuse

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (3rd District of Ohio)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued a statement supporting Senator Cory Booker’s (D-NJ) marathon speech opposing President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s efforts to dismantle the federal workforce, slash essential programs, and undermine American democracy.

“What Senator Booker has done tonight is a tremendous act of courage, conviction, and resilience,” said Congresswoman Beatty. “His record-breaking floor speech shows the deep commitment he—and so many Congressional Democrats—have to resisting Trump’s relentless assault on the services and benefits that millions of Americans have earned and rely on.”

“Throughout these difficult hours, Booker has shared the stories of thousands of Americans and their loved ones who are now at risk due to President Trump and Elon Musk’s reckless and damaging actions. Health care and food assistance are on the chopping block. Timely Social Security payments for seniors are threatened. Jobs for our nation’s veterans are caught in Musk’s crosshairs. Education funding that supports students’ futures is being slashed. And today medical research, disease tracking, and food safety are all under siege.”

“The impact of Trump’s policies is felt in every corner of the country—from Newark to Columbus and beyond. The late John Lewis taught us to make ‘good trouble’ in the pursuit of justice. For the past several hours, Senator Booker has done just that—sounding the alarm on the widespread harm caused by the Musk-MAGA takeover of our government.”

“As Chair Emerita of the Congressional Black Caucus, I’m especially proud of what my friend and colleague has done tonight to stand up for the well-being of all Americans.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Transcript: Governor Hochul is on “The Beat With Ari Melber”

Source: US State of New York

arlier today, Governor Hochul was a guest on MSNBC’s “The Beat with Ari Melber.”

AUDIO: The Governor’s remarks are available in audio form here.

A rush transcript of the Governor’s remarks is available below:

Ari Melber, MSNBC:  We turn now to someone leading one of the largest states in the country, the New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a prominent Democrat who recently explained that she views the tariffs as a reckless tax on hardworking New Yorkers and that this could risk tanking the economy. Thanks for being here, Governor.

Governor Hochul: Good to see you again.

Ari Melber, MSNBC: Absolutely. You do real work with real people. This is a real thing that you’ve warned will affect them. What’s your response to these new tariffs tonight?

Governor Hochul: This is the largest tax increase in American history, nothing short of that. And a place like New York, I have the privilege of governing the 10th largest economy in the world.

I have Wall Street, I have rural farmers. I have the Walmart moms who are pushing that big shopping cart with the oversized toilet paper and paper towels and baby food – because I was that mom – who are now wondering, even at Walmart, are my prices going to go up? So this is cataclysmic. It is an earthquake, and we’re going to feel the tremors for a long time.

I have to ask why. Who are we liberating? We’re not liberating Wall Street. We’re not liberating the senior couple who’s watching their portfolio, their nest egg become scrambled. They’ve been saving their whole lives. Who are we helping here? We’re hurting real people in our state and across this country.

Ari Melber, MSNBC: Yeah. And you know, in politics sometimes they say there are the show horses or the workhorses. You seem to have led New York as more of a workhorse saying, “Let’s get down to business, let’s get real economic opportunity.” Some people around the country, they hear New York, they think Times Square. But there’s a lot more to it than that.

As you’ve argued and your Democratic colleague, Chuck Schumer was making the same point. That President Trump’s tariffs will cost upstate New Yorkers $7 billion per year. He says it could hit this region harder than just about any place in the country. Do you agree and, and what can Democrats do about it?

Because unlike some other issues we’ve covered, there aren’t legal arguments for the courts to come in and stop the tariffs. The president has this authority and he’s just using it in a way that a lot of people say is dangerous.

Governor Hochul: Right. This is a pounding on upstate – and I’m from upstate. I’m the first governor from Buffalo since Grover Cleveland and we sit on the border with Canada. We have 450 miles of shared border with Canada. They’re our largest trading partner.

The majority of our imported food comes from Canada. Buffalo – half of the Sabers game. I’m a hockey fan as well. They’re Canadians. They buy Buffalo Bills season tickets. They buy theater tickets, they shop in our stores. It’s going to affect the number of people already.

There’s a decline of 20 percent of Canadians coming across the border to visit because they’re angry. They’re really pissed off about this, and they were our friends, but also the cost of doing business. I talked to one farmer yesterday who’s devastated. He said, “You know what? This is gonna cost me more every single month for the extra shavings.”

They get the wood shavings for the stalls from Canada. They get their fertilizer from Canada. They get their steel and aluminum to repair fences and barns from Canada. He said, it’s going to cost me, just for feed alone, $10,000 more a month.

Ari Melber, MSNBC: So can anything be done?

Governor Hochul: Well, I’ll tell you what I’m working on in my budget as we speak. I have a plan to put $5,000 back in New Yorker’s pockets. People have little kids, a tax credit for families, a middle class tax cut, the largest rate decrease in 70 years. I even have an inflation rebate.

We’re putting $500 back in people’s pockets because they paid so much more in sales tax. So I’m looking at this holistic – but here’s what’s gonna happen. I’m going to put $5,000 back in their pockets. The tariffs are gonna suck $6,000 out. So how are people supposed to get ahead? Yeah, we are fighting. We’re doing our best, but I’m pleading with Washington. Keep your promise. You said on inauguration day, prices will go down. The opposite is happening. And why are we doing this?

Ari Melber, MSNBC: We heard – and in many ways the country heard – from Senator Cory Booker here over the past day and tonight, does he have the right idea looking for new or unusual measures to confront this Trump second term?

Governor Hochul: Yes. Yes. These challenging times call for creative solutions, and that’s what I’m doing with my budget and speaking out, using my voice as someone who represents a population of 20 million. We are not just a blue state, we have many red parts. It is fascinating to me that the parts of our state that are being hit the hardest were the ones that voted for Donald Trump, those rural areas, Elise Stefanik’s district in the North Country. That’s who I’m talking to.

So he’s got to realize that, whether it’s on Long Island, these people who supported him and voted for him, who are now gonna be hit, they’re gonna be losing their jobs. I don’t know who is supposed to benefit from this. These are real people who count on the president to keep his promises.

And I talked to them in diners and I went to grocery stores to talk about how expensive it is. I raised kids. I’m the first mom governor the state has ever seen. I know exactly what they’re going through. I think about my parents’ home, their first home was a trailer park. The people who never got out of that trailer park, they shop at Walmart, and if their prices go up 10 to 25 percent, they can’t make it work.

So Democrats have to stand out and point to those people that we represent and say, “I’m speaking for them. You’re hurting them. Those are my people. And you have to get through me to do that.”

Ari Melber, MSNBC: We’ve been talking about some things that I know you’re passionate about. The budget you’re working on upstate, we just talked about and of course confronting the president’s tariffs.

Now I want to ask you about something you might not wanna talk about, but here we are on the news – and that is this New York City Mayor’s race. All around the country, people tend to know the mayor of New York. Whether it’s Rudy Giuliani or Eric Adams, who’s had his recent controversies, and now someone that you are politically linked to – Andrew Cuomo is running, and this is someone who, at times, has been very prominent. People know his name.

But if you look at the record, there are a ton of questions, including of course, how he left office. Let’s just remind folks a little bit about some of his record:

    […]

I know you want to focus on other things, but this is reality and he is running. Should he be Mayor of New York?

Governor Hochul: Here’s my position. Despite what you may think coming out of Washington, we still live in a democracy. The voters will decide who the next mayor is just in a matter of months, and they have all the facts right before them. They’ll evaluate the candidates, and I’m putting my faith in the very smart, engaged voters of this city to decide who my next partner will be, or if the existing partner will continue.

Ari Melber, MSNBC: Do you think he’d make a good partner?

Governor Hochul: Whoever it is, they better work with the governor. Because I have a lot of control over the city, and I can help in countless ways. I’m responsible in large part for a reduction in crime, working with NYPD and the mayor because I’ve brought so much more money to the table.

Ari Melber, MSNBC: But when you say look at the facts, sometimes people say that and it means go get informed. And other times it’s what lawyers say in a closing argument. Look at the facts, which tell you that potentially the best thing for New York is not trying to have you two work together, given all that history and what I don’t imagine is a close relationship right now, if I may.

Governor Hochul: It’s not up to me. The voters will decide who the Mayor of New York is. I’m the governor. I have a lot of authority and involvement, but I also represent the 8.3 million people who call New York City home. I have their interests at heart and I’ll always fight for the city as I have for the last three years.

Ari Melber, MSNBC: New York Governor Kathy Hochul on many topics tonight. Thank you for joining me.

    Governor Hochul: Thank you.

Ari Melber, MSNBC: Really appreciate it.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Murphy, Blumenthal, 45 Senate Democrats Demand Trump Rescind Illegal Executive Order Threatening Federal Employee Collective Bargaining Agreements

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Connecticut – Chris Murphy
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Wednesday joined the entire Senate Democratic Caucus in a letter urging President Donald Trump to rescind his March 27 executive order to end collective bargaining agreements between public employee unions and dozens of federal agencies and bureaus. The senators blasted the move as a “gross overreach” of presidential authority, asserting that the executive order is a clear attempt to gut the federal merit-based civil service and implement a system of political cronyism. They stressed that the order poses a grave threat to the ability of over one million federal workers to carry out their missions and deliver important services for the American people – and thus should be rescinded immediately.
“We write today in outrage over your recent executive order entitled Exclusions from Federal Labor-Management Relations Programs, a gross overreach of the authority granted in the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 (CSRA). This order is an insult to the hardworking public servants who go to work on behalf of the American people,” the senators began.
“The executive order effectively classifies two thirds of the federal workforce as having national security missions, a blatant misuse of a limited authority intended to provide operational flexibility to address legitimate security needs,” the senators continued. “There is no evidence that the long-standing collective bargaining agreements at these agencies have jeopardized our nation’s security in any way; to the contrary, the protection collective bargaining has provided for employees allows them to conduct their work on behalf of the American people—including blowing the whistle on fraud or abuse—without political interference.”
“This Administration clearly does not have even a basic understanding of the legally binding nature of federal collective bargaining agreements and is actively trying to bend the law to undermine protections for federal civil servants. We urge you to immediately rescind this illegal executive order so that our dedicated public servants can continue to work on behalf of the American public without fear for their job or political retribution,” they concluded.
U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), Andy Kim (D-N.J.), Angus King (I-Maine), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) also joined the letter.
The letter is endorsed by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), and Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
Full text of the letter is available HERE and below.
    Dear President Trump:
We write today in outrage over your recent executive order entitled Exclusions from Federal Labor-Management Relations Programs, a gross overreach of the authority granted in the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 (CSRA).
This order is an insult to the hardworking public servants who go to work on behalf of the American people. They care for our veterans, deliver disaster assistance, prevent wildfires, help farmers improve crop yields, manage health benefits for 9/11 first responders, research treatments and cures for diseases, keep air travel safe, process tax returns, staff our national parks and much, much more. Nearly one third of these dedicated civil servants are veterans seeking to continue their service to our country out of uniform.
The executive order effectively classifies two thirds of the federal workforce as having national security missions, a blatant misuse of a limited authority intended to provide operational flexibility to address legitimate security needs. The national security exemption has existed for nearly 50 years and has been used only sparingly by Republican and Democratic Administrations—including during your first term—to exclude federal offices with an unquestionable core function in intelligence, counterintelligence, or national security. There is no evidence that the long-standing collective bargaining agreements at these agencies have jeopardized our nation’s security in any way; to the contrary, the protection collective bargaining has provided for employees allows them to conduct their work on behalf of the American people—including blowing the whistle on fraud or abuse—without political interference.
Federal employees’ collective bargaining agreements are critical to ensuring they continue to serve the American people with the peace of mind that comes with being protected from unfair labor practices. Unlike in the private sector, federal employee unions in most cases cannot negotiate pay or benefits, which are set by Congress, and they are legally prohibited from striking. The federal collective bargaining agreements do, however, protect federal employees from illegal firings, retaliation, and discrimination. They also promote resources for whistleblowers and veterans. These federal union contracts give employees in the civil service protections from retaliation so they can serve the American people fairly and effectively without partisan political interference.
This executive order, which ruthlessly strips collective bargaining agreements for over one million federal workers, is the most recent attack your Administration has levied against our merit-based civil service in the effort to cut the workforce and replace them with political cronies. While the CSRA does give the president the authority to limit collective bargaining agreements due to national security concerns, the executive order’s direction to terminate mass swaths of federal employee collective bargaining agreements is clearly intended to broadly dismantle the CSRA, which is specifically designed to grant federal employees the right to collective bargaining as a means to resolve workplace issues while maintaining the smooth functioning of government operations.
When the Secretary of Labor testified in February in front of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Members of Congress asked her both in-person and through questions for the record whether she and the Administration would commit to honoring all legally binding collective bargaining agreements signed by federal agencies and labor unions, and whether federal employees have the right to organize and collectively bargain without fear of retaliation. The Secretary answered, “if confirmed, I will follow the law and work with the experts at the Department to understand the collective bargaining process at the Department and the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreements in place.” This Administration clearly does not have even a basic understanding of the legally binding nature of federal collective bargaining agreements and is actively trying to bend the law to undermine protections for federal civil servants.
We urge you to immediately rescind this illegal executive order so that our dedicated public servants can continue to work on behalf of the American public without fear for their job or political retribution.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Release: Uncertainty remains over the impact of tariffs

    Source: New Zealand Labour Party

Today’s announcement of 10 percent tariffs for New Zealand goods entering the United States is disappointing for exporters and consumers alike, with the long-lasting impact on prices and inflation still unknown.

“The Government’s strategy of keeping its head down has not given New Zealand any advantage over our competitors,” Labour trade spokesperson Damien O’Connor said.

“It’s disappointing that the Government hasn’t been able to negotiate lower tariffs given the very low level of tariffs we impose on goods and services from the US.

“While the announcement has provided clarity on the percentage of tariffs, the impact on the US economy collectively including the impact on prices in the US market will take a long time to be fully realised.

“There’s going to be $900 million hit on our exports, and there is uncertainty over who will carry the cost of that, whether it will be US consumers or New Zealand exporters.

“We also have to consider how the ripple effect of tariffs on our trading partners such as China will affect prices back here.

“Decisions by our competitors to shift their goods to other markets may have further ramifications for NZ exporters.

“Trade Minister Todd McLay told New Zealanders that he didn’t expect New Zealand to be caught in tariffs, but he was proven wrong by today’s announcement,” Damien O’Connor said.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Health – Access and choice mental health programme stacks up

Source: Te Hiringa Mahara – Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission

At the five- year mark, the Access and Choice Programme has proved to be a valuable addition to the mental health, addiction and wellbeing support services available to people throughout the country.
Today Te Hiringa Mahara – the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission released a report that documents progress establishing the programme, with recommendations on how to ensure it reaches its full potential.
“The introduction of the Access and Choice programme has filled gap in support and has substantially increased access for people seeking help for mild to moderate mental health, addiction and wellbeing issues. The programme is a good investment, but efforts to reach more people need to be intensified,” said Karen Orsborn, Chief Executive Officer.
During 2023-24, over 207,000 people have accessed support, with over 1.6 million sessions completed across the country since establishment.
“There has been very positive feedback from those accessing the services. The impact of reaching people early is a huge net positive for Aotearoa; not just for those who need it, but for our health system, our workforce, and for New Zealand as a whole,” Ms Orsborn said.
The programme has improved access to primary mental health care. It includes specific services to meet the needs of rangatahi and young people, Māori and Pacific peoples. This is in line with levels of need experienced by these population groups. One marker of need is rates of moderate levels psychological distress. This is highest for young people aged 15-24 years (23.6%), Māori adults (22.5%), and Pacific adults (20.5%).
“We are encouraged that the programme ensures population groups with the highest levels of need are offered tailored services. This is key to the success of the programme.”
“There is more work to do for the programme to reach its full potential. We have noted some regional variations, and the number being seen falls short of the goal of 325,000 people,” Ms Orsborn said.
“While the programme has positive impacts, to be fully realised there needs to be focused effort. This will take greater flexibility of delivery modes, including offering virtual services, increased productivity and recruitment, and, most essentially, to sustain funding.”
One-fifth (20.2 per cent) of all people using Access and Choice services is aged 12-24 (equivalent to nearly 42,000 young people),
“Because rangatahi and young people experience high rates of psychological distress it’s vital there are services available that meet their needs. Therefore it’s a promising sign to see the rate at which young people are accessing services throughout the country,” Ms Orsborn said.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Health decision-makers should heed conclusions in primary healthcare report

    Source: GenPro

General practice owners encourage Health Minister Simeon Brown to read and act on a report which lists the many benefits of investing in primary healthcare.

The NZ Initiative report correctly concludes that a strong, accessible, and equitable primary care system will improve health outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and enhance the quality of life for all New Zealanders.

“The Heart of Healthcare: Renewing New Zealand’s Primary Care System is a considered analysis of the history which led to the current crisis in primary healthcare, explains the reasons why it’s this bad, and suggests ways to fix it.  The General Practice Owners Association agrees with many parts of report, which is a valuable addition to the discussion,” said Dr Angus Chambers, Chair of GenPro..

    Areas of agreement are that:

    • General practice directly saves lives, extends life spans, and generates substantial economic benefits. Any attempt to reform primary care without considering the complexity of GP work, their extensive training requirements, and the importance of sustained doctor-patient relationships will fail to build a sustainable GP workforce.
    • The current state of the GP workforce demands immediate and comprehensive action to ensure the sustainability of New Zealand’s primary healthcare system and the wellbeing of both practitioners and patients.
    • The current primary care funding model in New Zealand is contributing to widening health inequities, reduced access to care, and increased pressure on hospital services.
    • Other reforms should enhance IT systems, improve access and equity, embrace innovation while maintaining continuity of care, support GPs to prevent burnout, and strengthen the connection between primary and secondary care.

“Patients are fed up with waiting weeks to see a GP, their local GP closing down or restricting services, not being able to enrol at a local GP, and very short consultations. The NZ Initiative report is right to define the problems and focus on how to improve the situation,” Dr Chambers said.

GenPro looks forward to working with the Minister of Health to find ways to improve primary healthcare to enhance patient outcomes.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Consumer NZ – Price hikes are coming – it’s time to review your power provider

    Source: Consumer NZ

Too many households are paying more than they need to for power. With significant energy price increases looming, Consumer NZ calls on New Zealanders to check for cheaper options to help offset higher bills.

With rising energy costs, New Zealanders are facing a challenging winter. Price increases are already being implemented, with major retailer Mercury notifying an average price increase for its customers of 9.7% and others expected to follow suit.
Powerswitch encourages consumers to take advantage of its free comparison service to ensure they are not paying more than necessary.

“Analysis of Powerswitch data shows users can save, on average, almost $500 a year by checking for cheaper options. Such a saving would effectively offset upcoming price increases for many households,” says Powerswitch manager Paul Fuge.

“We find most households coming to Powerswitch discover they are paying more than they might need to. For example, 93% of users could find savings of more than $100, 73% could be saving more than $300 and 61% of users could potentially save more than $400.

“Escalating energy prices could make a bad situation even worse, so it’s more important than ever to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck.”

Energy costs emerged as one of the top three financial concerns for consumers in Consumer NZs latest quarterly Sentiment Tracker online survey. Such a rating is an indication of how energy affordability is increasingly impacting lives across the country.

Similarly, in Consumer’s last annual energy survey, 20% of households said they struggle to pay their power bills, with 11% reporting living in cold homes after reducing heating to cut costs.

Household concern about increasing power bills is likely contributing to an increase in the use of Powerswitch.

The warmer summer months typically have the lowest household power bills, so summer is traditionally a quieter time of the year for Powerswitch. But not this year. In the past four months (December to March), more than 10,000 customers used Powerswitch to initiate switching to a cheaper power deal. That’s a 48% increase compared with the same period last year and the highest recorded for this four-month period since Powerswitch was set up.

Powerswitch’s comparison tool has been helping New Zealanders save money for over 25 years now. The service’s primary purpose is to help people find the most cost-effective power company and pricing plan for their household. Awareness of Powerswitch has grown substantially during this time to 62% of those surveyed in October 2024.

According to Consumer, cost is a significant reason to switch energy providers, with 45% of people making the change due to price hikes.

Changes in circumstances, such as getting a big bill (25%), and changes in household circumstances, such as moving (22%), also drive switching behaviour. Satisfaction with current providers and the perceived effort required to switch act as barriers to switching.

“Saving $500 or more is meaningful for most households right now. That could look like a large grocery shop, Christmas presents for the kids or more savings”, says Fuge.

A big chunk of the price rise noted by consumers is due to increases in what the electricity lines companies can charge. Lines charges typically make up around 40% of a household’s overall power bill.

The Commerce Commission completed a review of the revenue limits for lines companies and indicated households would see an increase of $10-$25 (excluding GST) a month to pay for higher distribution and transmission costs. Auckland lines company Vector announced an average increase of 21% to its charges.

How to compare and check your plan is cost effective

Powerswitch is a free and independent service that compares 15,000 residential power plans from 16 providers.

The website and call centre service allows people to input some simple information, including their address or details from their last bill to compare prices and click switch in just five minutes.

The tool is funded by the Electricity Authority, which is an independent Crown entity tasked with governing and regulating New Zealand’s electricity industry.

New consumer care obligations took effect on 1 April. These regulations aim to provide further protection for customers by requiring power companies to provide clearer contract terms, easier access to consumer care policies and processes to support customers in financial difficulty.

For more information and to compare power plans, visit powerswitch.org.nz.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Gaza – About 130 children born daily in Gaza amid total siege on aid and goods – Save the Children

    Source: Save the Children

GAZA, 2 April 2025 – About 130 children are being born daily in Gaza as Israeli authorities’ total siege on supplies enters its second month, putting mothers and newborns at risk as medical and food supplies run out and a lack of flour closes all bakeries , said Save the Children.
There are about 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza, with 4,000 deliveries estimated in March, according to UNFPA [1]. That’s about 130 babies born every day over a month into a healthcare system driven to the verge of collapse, where some may not survive complications at birth.
Not one truck – humanitarian or commercial – has been allowed into Gaza since the Government of Israel imposed a total siege on 2 March. No goods have entered including water, flour, fuel, or medicine, and essential supplies are quickly depleting. All bakeries across the Gaza Strip – a critical source of food – have closed after exhausting their remaining flour stocks, according to the World Food Programme.
The survival of mothers and newborn children in Gaza is under particular threat due to the lack of food, destruction of hospitals , and chronic stress. Malnutrition during pregnancy can seriously affect a baby’s development, leading to low birth weight, stunted growth , and long-term difficulties in learning and development.
The number of miscarriages has reportedly surged with a 300% increase in Gaza during the war and pregnancy complications that would normally be treatable are now becoming life-threatening [2]. More babies are being born premature and underweight, putting them at risk of serious, lifelong health problems.
Save the Children spoke with new mothers the organisation is assisting during the eight-week pause in hostilities that ended on 18 March who described nearly dying while giving birth in tents, and babies being born dangerously malnourished. At least 322 children have been killed and over 600 injured by Israeli forces since the resumption of hostilities, according to the UN.
Meriem-, 31, mother of seven in Gaza:
“I couldn’t go to the hospital. I gave birth to him in a tent, and it was complicated. I had postpartum haemorrhage and needed seven pints of blood. When I eventually made it to the hospital, the doctors told me I was between life and death.
We had no food. Food wasn’t available, we couldn’t find anything, and two months after he was born, he became malnourished. I was watching all my children wasting away and I was helpless. I couldn’t do anything for them.”
Fatima-, 30, mother of four Gaza:
“I gave birth to my baby in a tent. My daughter came out so small, underweight, and I couldn’t get her adequate care. It was hard, hospitals were full. I didn’t have a cot, so my husband would find empty boxes, put them on top of each other, and we’d lay her there so she’s not sleeping on the floor. We didn’t want insects to get inside her ear or nose or hurt her head from laying on the floor. My mother-in-law used to comment on how tiny my newborn was compared to the rest of my children when they were born.”
Save the Children is calling on the Government of Israel to immediately lift the siege on Gaza and to facilitate unimpeded humanitarian access to families across the Strip, in line with their obligations under international law. If the international community does not intervene soon, an entire generation of children in Gaza will be erased, along with their futures. There must be a definitive ceasefire, and aid must be allowed to reach people.
Save the Children provides nutrition services and safe spaces for pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children in Gaza. We run 10 Mother Baby Areas (MBA) in Deir Al Balah and Khan Younis where mothers can access advice, support, and speak to nutrition counsellors – some of which we’ve had to temporarily suspend due to the conduct of hostilities and the lack of safety assurances for humanitarian workers.
Save the Children has been providing essential services and support to Palestinian children since 1953 and has had a permanent presence in the occupied Palestinian territory since 1973.

  • MIL-OSI China: Capital flows from listed banks demonstrate China’s economic dynamism

Source: China State Council Information Office

The recently released 2024 annual reports of China’s listed banks highlight the diverse dynamics of China’s economic development, as banks, serving as the primary channels for corporate and household financing, in their capital underscore the economy’s growth momentum.

Key sectors in focus: tech firms attracting major capital

Data from annual reports indicate that over the past year, listed banks have continued to expand credit issuance to support the real economy. In 2024, China’s four major state-owned banks, which include Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), Bank of China (BOC), and China Construction Bank (CCB), collectively issued more than 8 trillion yuan (about 1.11 trillion U.S. dollars) in new loans.

ICBC and ABC each saw loan increases exceeding 2 trillion yuan.

Strategic national initiatives and key industries remained top priorities for credit allocation, the reports showed, and banks reported notable growth in loans directed toward manufacturing, strategic emerging industries, and elderly care services.

By the end of 2024, ICBC’s outstanding loans to strategic emerging industries had exceeded 3.1 trillion yuan, while BOC’s lending to these industries had grown by 26.31 percent year on year.

CCB’s loans to the manufacturing sector totaled 3.04 trillion yuan, and the medium-to-long-term loans to the manufacturing industry by ABC saw a 20.2-percent year-on-year increase.

Technology-driven enterprises also gained traction. CCB’s loans to science and technology-related industries topped 3.5 trillion yuan by the end of 2024, while ICBC’s loans to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are specialized, refined, distinctive and innovative rose over 54 percent from the start of the year. China Everbright Bank also reported a 42.1-percent year-on-year increase in loans to tech firms.

Behind the figures, banks have been accelerating the establishment of financial mechanisms that align with technological innovation. ICBC has set up 25 regional technology finance centers nationwide, ABC expanded its network of tech-focused branches to nearly 300, and BOC launched a dedicated science and technology innovation fund.

However, many SMEs in the tech field still face financing challenges. At their earnings briefings, multiple banks pledged to deepen integrated equity-loan-bond-insurance financial services and tailor products to meet diverse innovation needs.

Boosting consumption, demand: consumer loans surging

Consumer credit has emerged as a catalyst for domestic spending. Banks actively promoted traditional sectors like automobiles and home appliances while cultivating new consumption scenarios in tourism, elderly care, and other services.

By end-2024, Bank of Communications saw personal consumer loans jump 90.44 percent year on year, adding 156.8 billion yuan. ABC’s consumer loans grew 28.3 percent, that of CCB rose 25.21 percent, and China Merchants Bank’s consumer loan balance hit 396.16 billion yuan, up 31.38 percent year on year.

CCB also reported over 1 trillion yuan in credit card loans.

At the same time, banks have focused on meeting residents’ essential and improved housing needs by maintaining stable personal mortgage lending. By the end of 2024, CCB’s personal mortgage clients had surpassed 15 million, with outstanding mortgage loans totaling 6.19 trillion yuan. China CITIC Bank’s mortgage loan balance increased by 61.41 billion yuan, ranking among the highest in the industry.

Since the fourth quarter of last year, China’s housing market has shown positive changes following the implementation of a series of policy measures, which was also reflected in the financial sector.

According to CCB vice president Ji Zhihong, the bank’s daily average mortgage loan applications in Q4 2024 rose by 73 percent quarter-on-quarter and 35 percent year-on-year, with early repayments declining further in Q1 2025.

With additional policies aimed at boosting consumption on the horizon, the consumer finance market is poised for new growth opportunities. Dong Qingma, deputy dean of the Institute of Chinese Financial Studies at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, stated that financial institutions will continue to ramp up support for consumption through fiscal incentives, interest subsidies, and tax reductions, injecting more capital into the economy.

While CMB’s annual report highlighted plans to tap into consumption scenarios encouraged by national policies, including high-end and comprehensive household spending. ICBC announced that it will actively engage with emerging economic models such as the ice and snow economy and the silver economy to further unleash consumption potential and enhance economic circulation.

Unlocking credit growth: fueling real economy

Multiple banks have signaled their commitment to maintaining stable credit growth, ensuring strong, sustained financial support for the real economy.

ICBC pledged over 6 trillion yuan in financing to private enterprises over the next three years. ABC aims to exceed 7.5 trillion yuan in loans to private firms by 2025, with inclusive finance loans growing faster than average.

A review of various banks’ strategic directions suggests that credit allocation priorities for 2025 are becoming clearer. Bank of Communications plans to issue 480 billion yuan in corporate loans, targeting major infrastructure projects, manufacturing, rural revitalization, and strategic emerging industries aligned with government policies.

CCB plans to further expand its retail credit and focus on green finance in key sectors such as energy, industry, and transportation, while continuing to support major infrastructure projects. China Everbright Bank will allocate over 70 percent of its corporate credit growth to tech, green, and inclusive sectors.

“The implementation of a more proactive fiscal policy and a moderately loose monetary policy this year will provide a favorable macroeconomic environment for the banking industry,” said ABC president Wang Zhiheng, adding that in 2025, the bank will seize strategic opportunities in rural development, industrial upgrades, and green transitions, among others.

Experts believe that as banks align their strategies with macroeconomic priorities, they will continue to identify and meet effective credit demand, enhancing the precision and adaptability of financial services, thus, continuing to channel high-quality funding to sustain the real economy’s growth.

  • MIL-Evening Report: US tariffs will upend global trade. This is how Australia can respond

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Felicity Deane, Professor of Trade Law, Taxation and Climate Change, Queensland University of Technology

US President Donald Trump has imposed a range of tariffs on all products entering the US market, with Australian exports set to face a 10% tariff, effective April 5.

These import taxes will be charged by US customs on each imported item. The punitive tariffs on 60 countries range as high as 34% on imports from China and 46% on Vietnam, and exceed the rates agreed between the United States and other global trade partners.

“For decades, our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far, both friend and foe alike,” Trump said.

The impact on Australian industries will be both direct and indirect. The largest Australian export to the US is meat products, totalling A$4 billion in 2024, and our farmers may divert some product to other nations.

    Direct and indirect impacts

The larger economic risk is to our regional trading partners.

While Australia faces only 10% tariffs, our major trading partners China, Japan and South Korea all face much higher US tariffs under the new regime. So the risk of a manufacturing slowdown in those countries could dampen demand for Australia’s much larger exports – iron ore, coal and gas.

Australian investors reacted swiftly, wiping 2.1% off the main stock market index, the S&P/ASX 200, in the first hour of trade.

Another problem will be the disruption to global supply chains. It is not just finished products impacted. For instance, the 25% automobile tariff will be extended to auto parts on May 3. This means even if a car is entirely built in the US, it will still be more expensive because many components are imported.

    Read more:
    What are tariffs?

What sectors has the US complained about?

On April 1, the US released an annual trade report that identifies what it describes as “foreign trade barriers”. There was a long list of grievances with both tariff and non-tariff barriers identified.

The report identified Australia’s biosecurity restrictions on meat, apples and pears. The Australian biosecurity rules do not directly ban any products, although in practice raw beef products are excluded.

Trump singled out Australian beef in his speech. “They won’t take any of our beef,” he claimed.

In a speech riddled with inaccuracies and falsehoods, this was one of them. Australia take shelf-stable US products, but not raw products for which consumer safety can not be assured.

The US cited two other main Australian trade barriers. US drug companies have criticised the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme approvals processes. The Albanese government’s plan to strengthen the News Media Bargaining Code that requires tech companies to pay for news published on their platforms was also targeted.

    How can Australia respond?

Both Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton are in agreement over what we should do in response. They say Australian law and policy is not up for sale. We don’t negotiate on biosecurity, we don’t negotiate on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme process, and our local news media deserves protection from Big Tech.

    1. All avenues start with negotiations

The preferred option is for a negotiation with the US to secure an exemption.

A dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO) sends a strong message to our trading partners and will also mean there’s an expert adjudication on this unprecedented move.

However, the US has sidelined the WTO in recent years and Albanese has ruled out this route.

    2. Consultation

The second potential action is to initiate consultations under the Australia–US Free Trade Agreement. There is a formal process identified in the agreement to which Albanese referred, with a threat of “dispute resolution mechanisms”.

Albanese has ruled out imposing “reciprocal tariffs” on US imports, noting this would only push up prices for Australian consumers.

    3. Find new markets

Third, we can find other markets. Australian agricultural products are some of the most desirable in the world. Australian producers will have other options. Indeed, the latest data for beef exports showed exports to China jumped 43% from January, to Japan up 27%, and to South Korea up 60% from the previous month.

    What has the government said?

Albanese announced a response package, including $50 million to help pursue new markets. He said the tariff announcement was “not the act of a friend” and had “no basis in logic”:

It is the American people who will pay the biggest price for these unjustified tariffs. This is why our government will not be seeking to impose reciprocal tariffs.

Albanese’s response contains only one direct trade measure. That is the plan to strengthen anti-dumping provisions on steel, aluminium and other manufacturing. This means countries looking to sell their products too cheaply in Australia will face countervailing duties. It is a measure that aligns with trade rules.

The decision by the US to impose tariffs in this way shows complete disregard for the world trade order established after World War II.

The rules that have existed since this time aimed to limit trade barriers (such as tariffs). They also recognised the importance of supporting developing countries to be part of the world economy.

Some of the biggest US tariffs are to hit some of the lowest-income countries. This will impact their economies badly and disadvantage people already living in poverty.

  • MIL-OSI USA: On Senate Floor, Klobuchar Calls for Congress to Pass Her Legislation to Reverse Canada Tariffs

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Minnesota Amy Klobuchar

WASHINGTON—On the Senate Floor, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) called for support of her bipartisan legislation with Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Mark Warner (D-VA) to undo President Trump’s across-the-board tariffs on Canadian imports. The administration is imposing a 10 percent tariff on energy from Canada and a 25 percent tariff on other goods — a move that amounts to a tax hike on American consumers and businesses. Canada is Minnesota’s top trading partner.

“This resolution is about drawing a line in the sand and saying you cannot abuse your emergency powers to start an unjustified trade war,” said Klobuchar. “You cannot abuse your emergency powers to hurt one of the finest relationships in the world, the relationship between America and Canada, and you cannot drive up prices, eliminate jobs, and put in place a national sales tax.”

Along with Klobuchar, Kaine, and Warner, the legislation is cosponsored by Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Angus King (I-ME), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Rand Paul (R-KY).

Specifically, the senators’ legislation would work by terminating the President’s February 1 declaration that President Trump used to launch his trade war with Canada, and thus eliminate the tariffs on Canadian imports as a result. The declaration invoked the International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA), an unprecedented use of that law in its nearly 50-year history to justify across-the-board tariffs on a longstanding U.S. ally.

A rough transcript of Klobuchar’s remarks is available below. Download video HERE

Senator Klobuchar: Madam President, I rise today in strong support of the bipartisan resolution led by my colleague who is here today, Senator Tim Kaine, which I co-lead with him and Senator Warner to restore stability to our trade with one of our greatest allies, greatest friends, and that is the country of Canada.

This resolution does one thing, and it does it clearly. It terminates the President’s declaration related to the Canadian border that he is using as an excuse to impose across-the-board tariffs, which are, in fact, taxes on Canadian imports under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act

Passing this resolution just became even more urgent because of the President’s announcement of even more across-the-board tariffs this afternoon, including a minimum 10% tax on all imports and even higher tariffs on certain countries, including our friends and allies.

This is a country that has thrived on the fact, and our economy has grown because we do business with the world. And already with the President’s announcement, which he calls Liberation Day, I call it a National Sales Tax Day, because the estimates are that these tariffs will result in about $5,000 in taxes, that’s right, on the average family in America every single year.

What has happened? Well, the stock market is closed, but the futures are tanking. They are tanking, and that is because people get that this is not going to work for our American economy. They don’t want a national sales tax. People involved in the economy of this country, everyone from small business owners on and they’re going to be the first hit by this, because they do not actually have the wherewithal and the big conglomeration to try to deal with it.

Small farmers in my state that are already dealing with retaliatory tariffs, that are already dealing with the fact that Canadians who used to buy their stuff don’t want to buy it anymore, or other countries aren’t buying their stuff. And what happens then, the Canadians look for other markets, and there’s other countries, other manufacturers, other farmers, and other nations that say “we are more than happy to fill your contract, sir. We are more than happy to help you out with that aluminum, Mam.” Because of these tariffs.

This resolution is about drawing a line in the sand and saying you cannot abuse your emergency powers to start an unjustified trade war. You cannot abuse your emergency powers to hurt one of the finest relationships in the world, the relationship between America and Canada, and you cannot drive up prices, eliminate jobs, and put in place a national sales tax.

Canada is not just our neighbor with my state, it’s our number one trading partner. In fact, we do so much business with Canada that it is more than the total of our number two, number three, and number four, largest markets combined. We are the fourth biggest ag exporter, the state of Minnesota, in the country. So, we know a little bit about how this works.

In 2023 alone, our state exported 7 billion in goods to Canada, including ag products, machinery, and medical devices. That’s a major hit for the retaliatory tariffs that we’re going to see.

The damage could extend to every sector of our economy. I just mentioned tourism. So I chair the Canadian American Interparliamentary Group. I go to Canada a lot. I know our partners over there. I know the people in the Conservative Party, the Liberal Party, all of them. And the one thing that has united us to a T is this friendship, that has far transcended this President.

I remember it was the Canadian Embassy in one of the worst of times for our country, that had banners draped in the front of their embassy that said, “friends, neighbors, partners, allies.” Those banners aren’t hanging there right now, and they’re not going to put them up any time soon.

It was the Canadians that were the first to arrive after 9/11 to volunteer, to help out our country in its greatest moment of need. They fought alongside us in two World Wars. This is a long-standing friendship and an incredible trade relationship based on mutual respect and trust, and yes, two strong economies.

Because these new tariffs are already causing harm, as I noted, they amount to a national sales tax.

Since the administration began to propose and implement or pause but hang over people’s heads, wide-ranging tariff, wholesale prices have gone up on everything from meat and coffee to natural gas and lumber.

Homeowners Association, Home Builders Association, Retail Association, how many business groups? Are the Republicans not listening to them anymore? And add to that, the Steelworkers. Do they not care about that? They’re opposed to that, and they support this resolution that Senator Kaine, and Warner, and I have come together to introduce.

With these tariffs across the world, we’re going to see a $20,000 increase to the price of a home and a $3,000 increase to an American-made car. This might not mean much to Elon Musk and the billionaires in Trump’s cabinet, but it means a lot to the people in my state.

Tariffs can be an important tool. Sure, you can have targeted tariffs. That’s not what this is. These tariffs on Canada are an abuse of the emergency powers, and if they want to negotiate this, put it in the upcoming negotiations of the USMCA, the United States, Mexico, Canada, Trade Agreement that I supported, that President Trump negotiated in his last administration. Why wouldn’t he do it there? Why, instead, is he doing his usual shock and awe, jarring the economy? This is going to be a blanket permission slip for tariff wars.

And I will note again, thank Senator Kaine, our bipartisan group of supporters, and the United Steelworkers, International Association of Machinists, North American Building Trades Union, AFL-CIO, Chamber of Commerce, National Taxpayers Union, and the National Retail Federation have all endorsed this resolution. Maybe we don’t care about all those businesses and all those workers, but maybe we should listen to them.

This resolution is about restoring common sense and responsible governance. It is about Congress reasserting its constitutional role on trade, and it’s about standing up for American workers, businesses, and consumers who are being asked to pay the price of this trade war.

Let’s change course, before the damage becomes even more permanent. I urge my colleagues to support this resolution.

    Thank you.

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | CONTACTOlivia Porcaro 202-225-6165

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after hearing about the passing of Wes Watkins:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of my dear friend and distinguished public servant, Wes Watkins of Stillwater, Oklahoma.

“Wes was a remarkable man and had a brilliant career in Congress, serving on two of the House’s most powerful committees, the Appropriations Committee and the Ways and Means Committee. Amazingly, he did so first as a Democrat (1977-1991) and then as a Republican (1997-2003). Wes also served as a State Senator in the 1970s and twice ran for Governor of Oklahoma (1990 and 1994), first as a Democrat and then as an Independent.

“Even though they ran against one another in a three-way race, former Governor Frank Keating nominated Wes for a cabinet level position in his first Administration. However, the Democratic dominated State Senate of that era refused to confirm his nomination – but Wes had the last laugh the next year when he reclaimed his old congressional seat as a Republican.

“Wes was the only person in Oklahoma history to carry a congressional seat as a Democrat, as an Independent in his 1994 Governor’s race, and finally as a Republican. No politician was ever as popular in the historic Third District, also known as Little Dixie. Wes Watkins’ remarkable electoral journey both symbolized and propelled Oklahoma’s own political transformation.

“I was privileged to serve as Wes’ lead political consultant in his final three congressional campaigns. I never worked for a more popular figure in a congressional district or a harder working man or a more energetic and effective campaigner than Wes. He was an institution in southeast Oklahoma, serving his constituents ably, honorably, and tirelessly throughout his political career.

“Wes Watkins may have changed political parties, but he never changed his political principles. He also never lost his passion for public service or let down the people he worked so hard to represent.

“Wes Watkins loved three things above all else – his family, the people of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State University. He served all of them with love, dedication, and genuine distinction.

“The soulmate and cherished partner of Wes Watkins’ life was his beloved wife, Lou. You literally cannot think of one without thinking of the other. Their marriage was truly a match made in heaven.

“I will miss my friend Wes. The people of Oklahoma will miss him more. As one of his television ads once claimed, there simply was ‘no better man.’

“I extend my deepest sympathies to Lou, Wes’ children and grandchildren, and to all of Wes Watkins’ countless friends, former staffers, and admirers. Oklahoma has lost one of its favorite sons, most distinguished public servants, and ardent champions,” said Congressman Cole.

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | CONTACTOlivia Porcaro 202-225-6165

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed the full-year Continuing Resolution to keep the government open and working for the American people:

“House Republicans don’t just act—we deliver for the American people. I’m proud the clean funding extension we led is now headed to President Trump’s desk. This win for the country was secured by those who made an informed choice to support their constituents. I am extremely grateful for each vote that strongly supported critical operations and programs, our communities, and the military.

“Ensuring our government remains open and working for the nation is not a partisan issue, but many Democrats made it one. Their strategy of trying to empower and enable a reckless shutdown did not win with votes, or the public’s opinion. They counted on leveraging chaos and fearmongering—but were only met with a unified voice and product absent of poison pills. This point reiterates that there are people to acknowledge and important lessons to learn. Thank you to those who voted for the legislation in each chamber, our members and staff—and most of all—the President and Vice President, who pushed the bill across the line.

“As we look ahead to the next fiscal year, we must remember: Republicans win when they stick together, Democrats are more effective when they negotiate rather than provoke partisan confrontations, and the country is better off when Republicans and Democrats actually work together. I look forward to continuing to chart a responsible fiscal path forward and working to deliver on America’s golden age. Each policy victory advances a safer, stronger, and more prosperous future for all,” said Congressman Cole.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after his legislation, the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act of 2025, to keep the government operational and continue support for Americans passed the House of Representatives:

“The choice before us was simple: you either support keeping the government open and working for the American people – or you want a reckless government shutdown. House Republicans acted to meet the nation’s fiscal deadline. My vote reflects a steadfast commitment to continuing operations for our military, veterans, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, child nutrition, public safety, and other critical services relied on by our constituents. I’m also proud to have supported the largest pay raise for our brave junior enlisted heroes since President Reagan. With no poison pills or unrelated riders, the bill is a straightforward extension of funding and certainty for the nation. We asked for Democrats to join us at the table. Instead, they sat at the joint address, sat on the sidelines, and sat in their general contempt for President Trump. It is ironic that by rejecting all the priorities this stopgap put forward, they are showing exactly where they do stand. I ask the Senate to act on this bill quickly and ensure responsible governance,” said Congressman Cole.

  • MIL-OSI USA: LEADER JEFFRIES: “DEMOCRATS ARE GOING TO PUT FAMILIES OVER BILLIONAIRES”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Washington, DC – Today, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries spoke at a rally where he emphasized that while Republicans are focused on giving tax cuts to their billionaire donors and Elon Musk, Democrats are going to continue to defend Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security and stand up for everyday Americans.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Are you ready to put families over billionaires? Are you ready to stop the GOP Tax Scam dead in its tracks? Is SEIU in the house right now? What an honor and a privilege to be here with all of you as we stand in the midst of this righteous fight, just a few steps away from the Capitol where I work, a Capitol, of course, that has turned into a hostile work environment. Because half the people want to bury their heads in the sand. Act like they don’t know what their responsibilities are. They believe, some of these sycophants, they believe that they work for Donald Trump. Congress doesn’t work for Donald Trump, we work for the American people, and all of you.

And so we got a very different vision about what we need to do at this moment. We want to move the country forward, they want to turn back the clock. We’re fighting hard to bring people together, they want to tear us apart. We believe in an economy that works for everyday Americans. They want an economy of the billionaires, by the billionaires and for the billionaires. That’s what the GOP Tax Scam is all about. That’s why we’re going to stop the GOP Tax Scam dead in its tracks and put families over billionaires. We’ve got a vision of America, we believe that in this country, when you work hard and play by the rules, you should be able to live a comfortable life, provide for your families, educate your children, purchase a home, have access to high-quality health care, go on vacation every now and then and one day retire with grace and dignity, that’s the American dream, and we’re gonna fight hard to make sure we bring that dream to life for every single person in this country, and put families over billionaires.

Nobody told us that the road would be easy. And so we know we have trouble all around us. Trouble in the White House. Trouble with the Congress. Trouble the cabinet. And by the way, Pete Hegseth needs to resign or be fired immediately. Trouble in the cabinet and trouble with Elon Musk. Can I park right there for a moment? Elon Musk is unelected, unaccountable, unhinged, unpopular and un-American with his out-of-control behavior. And so he wants to, and the extreme MAGA Republicans, they want to take a chainsaw to Social Security, a chainsaw to Medicare, a chainsaw to Medicaid, a chainsaw to public schools, a chainsaw to veterans’ benefits, a chainsaw to the American way of life. But here’s the thing, we’ve got to show up, we got to stand up, we’ve got to speak up and when we do, we’re going to take a chainsaw to Project 2025. Families over billionaires.

Let me end with this observation. Earlier this month, several of us, many in this crowd, many Members of Congress had an opportunity to visit Selma for the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. I also had the chance to stop by Montgomery, which was the start of the Civil Rights Movement. And when I was there, we thought about the courage and the conviction and the character of those civil rights heroes and foot soldiers. They had trouble all around them. The odds were stacked against them. But they knew that their cause was a righteous one and they were able to prevail. And that’s exactly what we’ve got to do right now because our cause, the cause of putting families over billionaires is a righteous one in the United States of America. And so when the Civil Rights Movement started early in 1956, shortly after the Montgomery Bus Boycott had started in December of the previous year, Dr. King was gathered at a church with thousands of people shortly after he had been arrested. They tried to intimidate them and bully them and stop the movement in its tracks. And Dr. King said to a gathering of folks that they’ve got to press on and keep pressing. And Dr. King said that if you can’t fly, run. If you can run, walk. If you walk, crawl. But at all times, press on, and keep pressing.

And here’s the thing, they want to intimidate us. They want to bully us. They want to threaten us. They’re trying to stop us. But our cause is a righteous one, and we’ve got to press on and keep pressing. • MIL-OSI USA: LEADER JEFFRIES: “DONALD TRUMP, THE ADMINISTRATION AND REPUBLICANS ARE TRYING TO DETONATE SOCIAL SECURITY”

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Washington, DC – Today, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a press conference where he emphasized that Democrats will continue to protect everyday Americans against the Republican effort to break Social Security.

LEADER JEFFRIES: Good afternoon, everyone. House Democrats are going to continue to focus on the things that matter to the American people. We’re going to protect Social Security, protect Medicare, protect Medicaid, protect our public schools, protect veterans and protect nutritional assistance to children, everyday Americans and families. House Republicans and the Trump administration are trying to take a chainsaw to everything that matters to the American people, like ending Social Security and Medicaid as we know it. Seniors on Social Security receive an average of $65 per day. They rely on Social Security—an earned benefit—to put food on the table, clothing on their back and to make sure that they can pay their rent or pay their mortgage. It’s extraordinary to us that Donald Trump, the administration and Republicans are trying to detonate Social Security in real time, including by dismantling the Social Security Administration, which will impact the ability of older Americans to receive benefits. The Republicans believe that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme. Project 2025 is the Ponzi scheme.
Republicans are defrauding the American people. Last year, Republicans promised that they would drive down the high cost of living and ignored Project 2025, lied to the American people as if it didn’t exist. This year, Donald Trump, the administration and Republicans in the Congress have done nothing to drive down the high cost of living. Costs aren’t going down. They are going up. Inflation is going up. America is becoming more expensive and less affordable under complete Republican control of government. At the same period of time, Republicans are flooding the zone with a parade of horribles that all relate to Project 2025. That’s the Ponzi scheme that’s been run on the American people and front and center right now is the target that Republicans have put on the back of Social Security recipients all across America. Democrats are going to fight hard to protect Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and the things that actually matter to making life better for the American people.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Tonko Blasts Trump Administration, GOP for Axing LIHEAP Staff

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Paul Tonko (Capital Region New York)

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Paul D. Tonko (NY-20) released the following statement lambasting the Trump administration for eliminating the entire staff at the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) as part of the massive and devastating cuts to the Department of Health and Human Services.

“The Home Energy Assistance Program provides relief for millions of American families that struggle to afford their utility bills. Over my years in Congress, I’ve worked to deliver HEAP funding to our Capital Region time and again to ensure our neighbors don’t have to choose between keeping the lights on or paying for food, medicine, and other daily essentials. This latest action from the Trump administration to eliminate the employees who deliver this aid is beyond callous. These cuts will rip away a lifeline for families across our Capital Region, New York State, and the nation. It is clear that Trump, Musk, RFK, and the GOP do not care about whether or not families can keep the power on — their focus remains bankrolling tax breaks for their billionaire friends.

“In the face of this cruelty, I’ll not stop my efforts to combat these cuts and deliver meaningful relief for American families struggling to pay their utilities, as with my bipartisan Weatherization Enhancement and Readiness Act. I encourage all my colleagues to join me in this work to preserve these proven energy affordability programs that support our communities.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rosen Statement on Trump’s “Liberation Day” Tariff Hike

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV)

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement on President Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement imposing broad-based tariffs on other countries, which will lead to higher prices for Americans on everyday essentials.
“Nevada families are already suffering from high costs on everything from housing, to groceries, to gas. Trump’s sweeping tariffs are a slap in the face to hardworking Nevadans who will now have to bear the full brunt of these additional taxes,” said Senator Rosen. “By raising prices of everyday essentials and hurting families’ budgets, these tariffs will also have a devastating effect on Nevada’s tourism economy. I’ll do everything in my power to reverse these blanket tariffs and lower costs for Nevadans.”
ICYMI: Below is coverage of Senator Rosen speaking out against tariff hikes:
ABC: Rosen speaks out against Trump’s price-spiking tariffs, policies

Anchor: “The Senate is expected to vote on Democratic-backed legislation to curtail Trump’s authority to impose tariffs on Canada. Do you think you’ll have the Republican support to pass the measure?”
Senator Rosen: “Well, some Republicans are indicating their support, but let’s be clear—this is a tariff, a blanket tariff on all Americans. This is a national sales tax – Trump’s tariffs. So he’s doing this just so he can justify a national sales tax. That’s wrong. Tariffs should be targeted. They should be strategic. They are a tool we can use, but putting a national sales tax on everyone that’s going to have our heating and cooling costs go up, having our food prices to go up, our housing, everything in between. And I can tell you, I live in Las Vegas. We depend on tourism. Canadian tourism [is] down 70% over last year because of what’s happening with our largest trading partner on the Trump tariffs.”
KLAS Las Vegas: Nevada Sen. Rosen calls for special counsel investigation into Signal chat leak

Senator Rosen: “What’s going to happen [with tariffs] is food prices go up. Like I said, housing goes up. Cars go up. Gas goes up. The cost of everything goes up. And when that happens, tourism goes down. So Nevada is going to be squeezed both ways. Everybody who lives here – prices going up, and people aren’t going to come because […] they’re going to be hitting their other states. So we’re going to lose it in our economy.”
KSNV Las Vegas: Rosen speaks out against Trump’s price-spiking tariffs, policies

Anchor: “Opponents like Senator Jacky Rosen say the tariffs will make everything more expensive for American households and eventually dig into the disposable income that people need to visit Las Vegas.”
Senator Rosen: “So when travel goes down, that means that there’s less money in our economy. These people don’t get those extra shifts. It means then they don’t work at the casino, and they don’t get their shift. They don’t go home and buy a pizza or go out to dinner. So it has a trickle down effect everywhere. So Nevadans are going to get squeezed by Trump’s reckless tariffs. It’s a national sales tax.”
KTVN Reno: Rosen speaks out against Trump’s price-spiking tariffs, policies

Anchor: “We were able to speak with Senator Jacky Rosen today, and she says when you put tariffs across the board, it’s a national sales tax, so whatever you consume, you are paying for. Senator Rosen also told us that she disagrees with these tariffs.”
Senator Rosen: “By the way, in Nevada, when everything goes up, what goes down? Tourism goes down. So we’re going to get hit with that double whammy because I know Canadian tourism is a 70 percent decrease in tourism from Canada over last year, and so we’re going to get squeezed in Nevada, both sides, and Trump said he doesn’t care.”
