MHRA launches new monthly safety bulletin and redesigned safety alerts

The new MHRA Safety Roundup provides a monthly summary of the latest safety advice for all medicines, medical devices, and healthcare products regulated by the MHRA, as part of our 3-year strategy to improve safety communications.

The MHRA has today (25 March 2025) launched a new monthly safety bulletin, the ‘MHRA Safety Roundup’, the latest step in a three-year Strategy for Improving Safety Communications to make medicines and medical device information clearer and more accessible for healthcare professionals.

The bulletin, which will be sent to subscribers and published online at the end of each month, provides a summary of all the MHRA safety alerts for the past month including drug safety updates (DSU), device safety information (DSI), national patient safety alerts, recalls and medicines notifications, and letters sent to healthcare professionals.

It also contains an MHRA news section highlighting key safety information about medicines, medical devices and healthcare products that may be of interest to readers.

The creation of the ‘MHRA Safety Roundup’ is in response to findings from our consultation on how the MHRA communicates safety information with healthcare professionals and organisations, which showed that healthcare professionals including GPs, nurses, and pharmacists found it useful to receive information at different frequencies, including monthly summaries, to suit their needs.

As part of our commitment to delivering the first year’s goals of the strategy, we have redesigned all our MHRA safety alerts to make critical safety advice clearer and easier to action, utilising colour, and relevant imagery to better engage healthcare professionals who often need to disseminate the information to their patients.

Work continues to improve the MHRA safety communications, and the next focus will be on strengthening engagement with patients and the wider public, including through use of communication methods that are tailored to their needs.

Healthcare professionals can subscribe to the ‘MHRA Safety Roundup’ here. For further information on how to find and subscribe to individual safety communications, visit our website.

    Speech

Diplomacy and dialogue are the best ways to achieve a stable future in Syria: UK statement at the UN Security Council

Statement by Ambassador Barbara Woodward, UK Permanent Representative to the UN, at the UN Security Council meeting on Syria.

I’d like to start by thanking Special Envoy Pedersen and Under-Secretary General Fletcher for your briefings.

Thank you also to Ms Seif for your briefing and for your tireless advocacy efforts.

We echo your calls for an inclusive political transition that prioritises the participation and leadership of women in Syria.

President, I would like to make three points today.

First, this month Syrians marked the 14th anniversary of the start of the uprising against the Assad regime.

At last, they can see the prospect of a more stable and hopeful future.

But horrific events this month demonstrate too that this remains a fragile and critical moment in Syria.

We welcome the Interim Authorities’ announcement establishing a fact-finding committee to investigate and prosecute individuals who committed crimes during the clashes in Syria’s coastal areas.

A peaceful and secure country is in the interests of all Syrians and the wider region.

Diplomacy and dialogue are the best way of achieving this and we urge all parties to refrain from further violence and to exercise restraint at this critical moment.

We are concerned by Defence Minister Katz’s declaration that the Israeli presence in the Area of Separation and the Golan Heights could be for an unlimited period.

This is unacceptable and Israel must present clear and reasonable timelines for their withdrawal in line with international law.

Second, we note the progress made in Syria’s political transition.

We welcome the Constitutional Declaration’s provisions on freedom of expression, religion and women’s rights alongside the commitment to establish a Transitional Justice Commission.

We call for swift implementation of these actions and hope the Declaration will provide a solid foundation for a transition that guarantees the rights of all Syrians.

A clear approach on accountability and transitional justice is essential for national reconciliation and to prevent a recurrence of the violence we saw this month.

    Progress on this cannot wait.

As the Interim Authorities take these next steps, we call for a consultative and inclusive process and for appointments to the Transitional Government to reflect Syria’s rich diversity.

Finally, we recognise the immense challenges of rebuilding Syria and that this cannot be done without economic recovery and the international community’s coordinated support.

The UK is committed to Syria’s recovery, underlined by our pledge at last week’s Brussels conference of up to $207 million in critical humanitarian assistance.

This will alleviate some of the suffering in Syria, as well as helping Syrians in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey, who generously host so many refugees.

In parallel, the UK has relaxed some sanctions on Syria and revoked the asset freezes of 24 entities and institutions in the energy, transport and finance sectors.

We have also issued a General Licence to support transactions for humanitarian activities in Syria.

In conclusion, President, the UK stands with the Syrian people in building a more stable, free and prosperous future.

Headline: How AI agents and digital threads will transform the manufacturing industries

Manufacturing is set for a major transformation with AI agents. These AI agents are programs that interact with their environment, perceive data, and act on that data, enabling organizations to gain insights, speed up innovation, and transform value chains. At Hannover Messe 2025, Microsoft and our partners will showcase how these technologies are creating a more connected, efficient, and intelligent future for the industry. Organizations will see how they can move faster, adapt smarter, and lead with confidence.

Yet even with all this progress, for decades fragmented systems and heterogenous environments have kept digital threads within the industry largely aspirational, preventing most organizations from achieving synchronized operations. A persistent inability to connect modern technology solutions with aging infrastructure has also slowed the collaboration long promised to manufacturers. Together, unified data and AI are now enabling organizations of all sizes to break through these barriers, transforming digital threads from static, disconnected datasets to dynamic networks. With AI agents serving as the interface, every worker can surface the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), total cost of ownership (TCO), and return on investment (ROI) insights necessary to drive decision-making.

    Explore Microsoft Cloud for Manufacturing

At Hannover Messe 2025, Microsoft is showcasing how new AI agents and partnerships with leading software vendors can help manufacturers deliver secure, scalable innovation from the shopfloor to the boardroom. Attendees will experience firsthand how data-driven intelligence and AI-enabled solutions will reshape manufacturing.

AI agents supporting the development of frontline workers

Manufacturing transformation is reaching into every aspect of operations. Frontline workers now have access to AI agents providing them with enhanced guidance needed to make informed decisions. To expand this modern toolbox, we announced back at Ignite 2024 the public preview of Factory Operations Agent in Azure AI Foundry. An AI-powered assistant, Factory Operations Agent streamlines operations—enabling operators, production, and leaders to quickly access insights and optimize manufacturing processes through natural language querying. In doing so, the agent accelerates issue resolution and root cause analysis to improve productivity within day-to-day manufacturing operations.

As the industry struggles with turnover, worker skilling is an ever-present challenge. The World Economic Forum found that 63% of industry leaders believe skilling to be a significant barrier to growth.1 Manufacturers need no-code and low-code options that democratize the power of AI without the need for extensive coding. With this in mind, we are announcing the same Factory Operations Agent now available in Copilot Studio in public preview, where with one-click it can be easily integrated into products like Microsoft Teams.

Finally, we’re announcing the public preview of Factory Safety Agent in Copilot Studio. This low-code, customizable solution provides workers with answers to occupational health and safety (OHS) questions and guidelines. It can also streamline safety inspections and personalize workforce training.

Also, at Hannover Messe 2025, we will be showcasing state of the art technologies that will enhance the future of frontline work, like with our customer Sanctuary AI.

Sanctuary AI is shaping the future of frontline work, ushering in the era of autonomous labor with the power of Microsoft Azure. As frontline labor shortages intensify, manufacturers can explore deploying advanced general-purpose robots with dexterity-driven physical AI to automate repetitive, complex, and unsafe tasks to enhance operational efficiency. With Azure’s high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs), Sanctuary AI can train machine learning models at scale, pushing the boundaries of dexterous intelligence.

Preparing the factory edge for AI

AI is redefining factory operations, but to fully capitalize on shop floor investments, manufacturers need to integrate their on-premises industrial edge solutions with the cloud.

A core component of the Azure adaptive cloud approach, Azure IoT Operations is built on industry standards. Capturing data from industrial equipment assets and devices, Azure IoT Operations normalizes it at the edge—sending operational insights to the cloud and back.

Husqvarna is leveraging Azure IoT Operations and AI tools to digitally transform its factory floors. Their AI Vision Companion enhances visual quality control for chainsaw production, while AI chatbots assist night workers with troubleshooting, improving efficiency, and reducing downtime. With these new capabilities, Husqvarna expects to double their in-market connected devices and boost robotic lawn mower sales, expanding Azure IoT Operations from two to 40 factories globally by summer 2025.

Siemens and Microsoft have expanded their partnership, Siemens Industrial Edge works seamlessly with Microsoft Azure IoT Operations, making OT and IT data planes fully interoperable for manufacturing. This joint effort streamlines data flow between edge and cloud, enhancing machine performance, product quality, and maintenance efficiency, and enabling manufacturers to adopt AI and digital twin technologies for more adaptive, optimized production.

Making AI-powered digital threads a reality for manufacturers

The nervous system of industrial operations, digital threads weave together critical information, processes, and people across manufacturing segments. Grounded in unified operational (OT), information (IT), and engineering (ET) data, the electronic frameworks can empower individuals with relevant, timely insights. From initial concept to customer support, this continuous flow of data connects and enriches every aspect of manufacturing.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Secretary-General’s remarks to the General Assembly to mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade [as delivered]

    Source: United Nations – English

he transatlantic slave trade is an indelible stain on the conscience of humanity.

For more than four centuries, enslaved Africans were kidnapped and trafficked; dehumanized, abused and exploited.

The depth and scale of the cruelty, inhumanity, and depravity of this practice is incomprehensible.

So, too, is the suffering, fear, pain and misery endured by those millions of people exploited for profit.

Today, we reflect on families ripped apart and communities decimated.

We remember the women, children, and men forced to work in agonizing conditions, savagely punished, and deprived of their dignity and human rights.

And we take strength in their resistance and demands for justice:

From revolution in Haiti, to the underground railroad in the United States, to countless individual acts of courage and defiance.

I deeply regret that several countries – including my own – were engaged in this immoral trade…

A trade driven by greed and built on lies – particularly the lie of white supremacy…

A trade enabled by insurers, bankers, shipping companies, legal systems and more…

That saw individuals, institutions and corporations amass unimaginable wealth on the back of human suffering.

When slavery was officially abolished, it was not the enslaved who were compensated, but the enslavers – receiving reparations equivalent to billions of dollars in today’s money.

In an even crueler twist, some slaves were forced to pay compensation.

Haiti had to fund payouts to those who had profited from its suffering – all in the name of securing its independence.

    Dear Friends,

Today is not only a day of remembrance.

It is also a day to reflect on the enduring legacies of slavery and colonialism and to strengthen our resolve to combat those evils today.

The obscene profits derived from chattel slavery and the racist ideologies that underpinned the trade are still with us.

Systemic racism has been embedded into institutions, cultures, and social systems.

And deeply rooted exclusion, racial discrimination and violence continue to undermine the ability of many people of African descent to thrive and achieve their full potential.

For too long, the crimes of the transatlantic slave trade – and their ongoing impact – have remained unacknowledged, unspoken, and unaddressed:

    Links to slavery were buried…

Histories were rewritten, minimized or overlooked…

Ongoing harms were excused or dismissed…

And perpetrators seemed to hope their actions would be lost to the past.

    Dear Friends,

    They were wrong.

Thanks to the tireless work of affected leaders and communities, calls to acknowledge and repair the past can no longer be ignored.

This year, at both the African Union Summit and the Caribbean Community Heads of Government Meeting, I heard leader after leader make a powerful case for reparatory justice.

Some institutions and states are taking steps to acknowledge and address their pasts…

Museums and public spaces are commemorating the resistance of people of African descent, and celebrating their vast contribution to societies.

    This is a start.

    But we need much more.

The horrors of the transatlantic slave trade are an undeniable fact.

Acknowledging this truth is not only necessary – it is vital for addressing past wrongs, healing the present, and building a future of dignity and justice for all.

It is also important that reparatory justice frameworks are grounded in international human rights law….

Developed with the participation of affected communities…

And acknowledge the terrible harms caused.

I urge everyone to play their part in building inclusive societies free from the evils of racism:

That means countries complying with their international obligations – including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights…

Implementing the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination…

And becoming Parties to the Convention if they are not already.

It means business leaders promoting equality and combatting racism.

And it means civil society, and everyday people continuing to push for justice, and taking a stand against racism wherever and whenever it appears.

    Excellencies,

This mission is at the heart of the United Nations.

The human dignity of every person is our founding creed.

We must stand with everyone, everywhere to combat racial discrimination and hate, and to defend the human rights and dignity of all.

    Thank you.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Congo Could Double Gas Production by 2027, Says S&P Global Commodity Insights at the Congo Energy & Investment Forum (CEIF) 2025

Source: Africa Press Organisation – English (2) – Report:

    BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo, March 25, 2025/APO Group/ —

The Republic of Congo is expected to more than double natural gas production by 2027 according to an outlook by commodity company S&P Global Commodity Insights – technical partner of the Congo Energy & Investment Forum (CEIF). This production increase will be driven primarily by Chinese developer Wing Wah’s Banga Kayo and energy major Eni’s Marine XII FLNG developments.

The outlook was announced by Lucinda Valerie Ross, Senior Technical Research Analyst at S&P Global Commodity Insights, during a Technical Presentation titled, Assessing the Role of Deepwater Gas in the Republic of Congo’s Energy Strategy, at CEIF in Brazzaville.

“Natural Gas production has historically been low [in Congo]. In response to increased production, Eni has been able to leverage pre-existing FLNG vessels in a phased approach to achieve first gas last year,” Ross stated, adding, “We need to attract investment to these projects in order to ensure sustained increased production in Congolese gas.”

The Marine XII project is set to produce 2.4 million metric tons of LNG annually in 2025. Production is expected to increase to 4.5 billion cubic meters per year by 2026, with LNG used for both domestic consumption and export.

Meanwhile, over a period of 25 years, the Banga Kayo permit, plans for a cumulative production estimated at nearly 30 billion cubic meters of associated gas. The project will be carried out in four phases, each progressively increasing the gas treatment and valorization capacity to meet local and regional LNG and LPG demand.

Natural gas currently accounts for over 70% of electricity generation in Congo. Meanwhile, natural gas, along with oil production, accounts for 35% of the country’s GDP and 75% of its exports.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Activision User Research Workers Overwhelmingly Vote to Form Union with CWA

    Source: Communications Workers of America

Los Angeles, Calif. – On Friday, a supermajority of user research workers at Activision voted in favor of union representation with Communications Workers of America (CWA), either by signing a union authorization card or indicating that they wanted union representation via an online portal. The workers will be members of CWA Local 9400 in Los Angeles. Microsoft has recognized the union.

Activision User Research Union-CWA is the first group of video game user researchers to form a union, joining over 2,000 workers at Microsoft-owned studios to organize under the company’s neutrality agreement with CWA. With a union, user researchers are hoping to secure significant improvements at their workplace, including higher wages, job security and protections amid record-breaking layoffs in the video game industry, and transparency around promotions and career advancement.

“We are excited to join our fellow game makers across the video game industry to show what’s possible when workers can freely build solidarity in the workplace. Many of us were mobilized to do something about the layoffs in 2023 and 2024, and now we can look out for each other with a union,” said organizing committee member and quantitative user researcher Nicolaas VanMeerten.

In the video game industry, user research focuses on understanding players’ opinions, behaviors, and needs to deliver insights to their development teams. By hosting players in their studios, user research helps bridge the gap between those who design video games and those who play them.

“A union allows workers to create an industry that works for them, which is vital in an industry that we deeply care about,” said organizing committee member and user research moderator Pat Dimaandal. “Workers should not feel punished for pursuing a career that they love, and that’s why we’re organizing toward long-term, sustainable careers in this industry.”

“It is critical that workers have a protected voice on the job to ensure they receive their fair share. We are proud to welcome these workers to CWA and are looking forward to meeting Microsoft at the bargaining table to secure a fair union contract,” said Maurice Washington, President of CWA Local 9400.

The union’s certification comes just days after the successful launch of United Videogame Workers-CWA (UVW-CWA), an industry-wide video game union working to build worker power irrespective of employer or current job status. Over 350 dues-paying members have joined since the UVW-CWA launch at the 2025 Game Developer Conference.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Honduras Man Charged with Multiple Firearms Charges Following Burglary of a Federal Firearms Licensee in Dickson, Tennessee

Source: Office of United States Attorneys

NASHVILLE – Manuel De Jesus Guirola-Amaya, 20, a citizen of Honduras without legal status in the United States, has been indicted by a federal grand jury with possession of a firearm by an illegal alien, possession of a stolen firearm, and stealing firearms from a federal firearms licensee, announced Acting United States Attorney Robert E. McGuire for the Middle District of Tennessee.

According to court documents, on December 5, 2024, a burglary occurred at Golden Eagle Pawn, a Federal Firearms Licensee, in Dickson, Tennessee. Surveillance video showed two stolen cars arrive at the shop, one of which rammed the front door. Four people got out of the cars and went into the store, targeting several firearms displays. About two minutes after crashing into the store, the four subjects left in one of the stolen cars. More than 40 firearms were stolen during the burglary.

Later that day, a La Vergne Police Department officer stopped a car with an expired registration. The sole occupant of the car was Guirola-Amaya. Inside the trunk of the car, officers discovered a backpack containing five pistols that had been stolen in the Golden Eagle Pawn burglary and still had the price tags attached. Officers also found another backpack in the backseat with two pistols which were also reported stolen from Golden Eagle Pawn, one of which still had a price tag attached. The backpack also held suspected marijuana, and a set of digital scales.

Agents later executed a federal search warrant at a residence tied to Guirola-Amaya. They discovered, among other things, a high-capacity magazine, ammunition, and price tags consistent with the Golden Eagle Pawn price tags. Agents also executed several search warrants on cell phones found on Guirola-Amaya or in the car the day of his arrest. The data extraction results from the phones provided further ties to the burglary including photographs and videos of firearms, location data, and search queries.

Guirola-Amaya entered the United States illegally in March 2022, and has no lawful status.

If convicted, Guirola-Amaya faces a maximum of 15 years in federal prison on Count One, which charges possession of a firearm by an illegal alien, and 10 years each on the other two counts. Guirola-Amaya also faces a $250,000 fine on each count.

This case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the La Vergne Police Department and the Dickson Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary T. Hinkle is prosecuting the case.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.

An indictment is merely an allegation. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Washington, D.C. – Monday evening, U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) hosted a live telephone town hall event with thousands of Oklahomans across the state. During the call, Senator Mullin addressed the recent devastating wildfires and took questions on DOGE cuts, border security, returning education to the states, and tariffs, among other topics. Click here to listen and see below for highlights.

On the devastating wildfires impacting Oklahoma:
“First, as we start this tele town hall meeting, we want to keep in mind that there’s a lot of families that are still hurting from the wildfires that took place and that are actually still taking place across Oklahoma. Christie’s, my wife, aunt and uncle who live in Stillwater, they lost their house and everything in it. And I know our family’s not any different than anybody else. All of us were impacted in some way. Our family is here to help personally, plus our office is here to help too. So, if there’s anything that comes up from the federal assistance side, we’ve been coordinating closely with Governor Stitt. Of course, you know, he lost his house out on the ranch, and had issues there too. But I can tell you him and I have talked on a regular basis. He is working with us on the federal side, in the coordination, making sure that it takes place. But if there’s a question that you have, someone that you that you know, or you may have been personally impacted, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office.”
On waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government:
“The President was very clear. I mean, promises made, promises kept. I can’t repeat that enough. Promises made, promises kept by the President. When he came out there and he said he was going to hold the government accountable for the people again, and make the government work for the people again, and that’s exactly what he’s doing. And you see the left losing their loving mind over it, because he’s actually doing something that, truthfully, you can go back and find the video that Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi talked about it in a forum in 2010… where they literally talked about exactly what DOGE is doing, except the Democrats never did it, and President Trump is doing it.”
On returning education to the states:
“Keep in mind, there was 4,200 employees that worked for the Department of Education, and they set policy for teachers to teach, and none of them were teaching. They were never designed to be educators… They weren’t teaching the students, but yet, they were trying to tell our teachers in Bixby, Oklahoma, or in Choctaw, Oklahoma, or Chickasa… how to teach their students in their classroom. And what President Trump is saying is, let’s put it back in the hands of the teachers. Let’s take the money, let the school board, and allow the superintendent and allow the principal and allow the teachers to be involved in how to educate their kids.”
“Where we went wrong was, we took the Department of Education and started thinking a lot of people from Washington, DC knew best how to teach our kids… You’re just going to see a lot more involvement out of your local school boards and a lot more responsibility going to your superintendent, your principal and your teachers in the classrooms.”
    On deporting criminal illegal aliens:
“The President’s well within his authority to do it, he should be able to do it. I mean, why is it bad to be deporting illegals that are here illegally? Obviously, they’re here illegally. These same judges didn’t do one single thing to stop the previous administration from allowing these criminals to come into our country, and now when we’re trying to deport them out of our country, now all of a sudden, these judges are speaking up? That’s a problem… They don’t want them in their neighborhood.”
On false rumors about cuts to benefits:
“The President has made it very clear, we’re not cutting benefits to anybody, not anyone on Social Security, not anybody on Medicare, Medicaid or VA benefits. That’s absolutely not happening. Now are we looking at making cuts because they’re bloated? Yes. Are we looking at shrinking the workforce in some of these places? Absolutely. The critical ones, no. But the government has absolutely impregnated itself since COVID… We’ve just seen a lot more employees coming in than we should have.”
    On tariffs:
“That’s why you see a huge boost in manufacturing coming back to the United States. You’re seeing foreign companies that have been shipping their products into the United States, now they are saying that they’re going to invest in our manufacturing, which is exactly what the President wants. And at the same time, we’re not looking for a trade war for anybody. We’re just looking to be treated fairly, and fairly means the same. We want you to be treated just like we’re being treated.”

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Six ‘great Coventrians’ to be honoured for their work for the city

    Source: City of Coventry

Six people who have shown dedication and passion to support the city of Coventry and its residents are to be honoured with The Coventry Award of Merit.

The six include famous names from the world of entertainment and sport, as well as those who have dedicated their lives to local communities, education, and the work for peace and friendship.

The Award was launched by the Council in the 1960s and is a way of recognising and honouring personal behaviour that reflects the highest ideals of citizenship, improves the good name of Coventry and inspires its residents.

There have only been eight award ceremonies over the years, honouring 46 individuals and organisations.

Award winners have included famous names such as athlete David Moorcroft; head of Jaguar Sir John Egan; poet Phillip Larkin; Sir Basil Spence, designer of Coventry Cathedral; and Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle, Inventor of the jet engine.

Now, six more names are to join the list.

They are: Pauline Black, Professor Stuart Croft, Sybil Hanson, Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, Mark Robins and Jon Sharp.

Pauline Black OBE DL, is an icon of British music who was a major part of the 2-Tone and Ska music revolution in the 1970s that became synonymous with Coventry and helped spread a message of racial equality. She has performed for over 50 years with The Selecter and is a pioneer for Black performers and in particular Black women in music. She is a Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands and combines her music career with supporting many local community projects.

Professor Stuart Croft is the Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of Warwick and has been part of this key part of city life since 2007. He has dedicated his whole life to supporting, promoting, and delivering higher education and academia, and has been instrumental in bringing inclusive economic growth to Coventry. He has overseen the university’s work to be a part of city life and a good neighbour, and has helped build links with local communities, charities and residents.

Sybil Hanson has spent over 50 years making a significant contribution to education in Coventry, including 25 years at Blue Coat CE School. In her retirement, Sybil has served on the Board of Directors for the Inspire Education Trust, the Diocesan Board of Education, and the Schools Forum. At the age of 85, she continues to play a role in education in Coventry. Her contribution is highly valued by the many organisations with which she works.

Councillor Abdul Salam Khan began his career in local government in 2007 and has been a member of the city’s Cabinet for 15 years and Deputy Leader of the Council since 2015. He demonstrates a profound commitment to inclusivity and respect and believes the strength of our city lies in its diversity. He represents the city around the world as he helps lead Coventry’s work as a city of peace and reconciliation, telling its story and inspiring others towards friendship.

Mark Robins took over at the helm of Coventry City Football Club in 2017 when the club, along with its fanbase, was at an all-time low. He took a club that was at one of its lowest points in its history and restored its pride. He not only made it a better team, he helped re-establish the club as a true part of the city. He took players and staff into the community, built links with local groups, supported work in diversity and equality, and instilled a real sense of togetherness and pride in the city.

Jon Sharp is a true Coventrian who was born in Hillfields and developed his love for rugby while a student at Bablake Grammar School. After building a successful career in the aero industry, John returned home to take over at Coventry Rugby Club as it was on the verge of bankruptcy. The club is now in its best place for a generation and Jon has built strong community links with schools and local clubs, and launched “Project 500’, which has helped over 6,000 children enjoy activities and hot meals.

Congratulating the six winners, Leader of Coventry City Council, Cllr George Duggins, said: “The Award of Merit is not awarded often, it is not an annual presentation, but only given when people have  shown outstanding commitment to our city and those who live here.

“The six people we are honouring are wonderful examples of that dedication and I am delighted that they are being recognised. They have not only excelled in their own chosen fields, they have taken their pride in Coventry and love for their city and used their skills to give something back.

“The nominations for these latest winners show the great amount of outstanding and selfless work they have carried out. They all come from different backgrounds and have different talents, but they all have something in common – their desire to help others and make Coventry a better place.

“Thank you to them all for everything they have done for our city. They are great Coventrians, and very worthy recipients of this great honour.”

Pauline Black, said: “I have always tried to place Coventry and its wonderful community of people at the centre of my life and It is an absolute honour to be nominated for such a prestigious award.”

The six will officially receive their Awards at a ceremony later this year.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Oklahoma Man Charged with Operating Large-Scale Dog Fighting and Trafficking Venture

    Source: US State of California

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma unsealed a grand jury indictment recently charging an Oklahoma man with violations of the dog fighting prohibitions of the federal Animal Welfare Act.

Leshon Eugene Johnson, of Broken Arrow, made his initial appearance in court last week. He is charged with possessing 190 pit bull-type dogs for use in an animal fighting venture and for selling, transporting, and delivering a dog for use in an animal fighting venture. Federal authorities seized the 190 dogs from Johnson in October 2024 as authorized under the Animal Welfare Act. This is believed to be the largest number of dogs ever seized from a single person in a federal dog fighting case.

“Animal abuse is cruel, depraved, and deserves severe punishment,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “The Department of Justice will prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law and will remain committed to protecting innocent animals from those who would do them harm.”

“The FBI will not tolerate criminals that harm innocent animals for their twisted form of entertainment,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “The FBI views animal cruelty investigations as a precursor to larger, organized crime efforts, similar to trafficking and homicides. This is yet another push in the FBI’s crackdown of violent offenders harming our most innocent.”

“Dog fighting is illegal, and courts have upheld its prosecution time and again,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Adam Gustafson of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD). “This strategic prosecution of an alleged repeat offender led to the seizure of 190 dogs destined for a cruel end. It disrupts a major source of dogs used in other dog fighting ventures.”

“Dog fighting is a cruel, blood-thirsty venture, not a legitimate business or sporting activity,” said U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Wilson for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. “I applaud the investigative work of the FBI and the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division in detecting and dismantling breeding operations which only serve to propagate this deplorable conduct.”

According to court documents, Johnson ran a dog fighting operation known as “Mal Kant Kennels” in both Broken Arrow and Haskell, Oklahoma. He previously ran “Krazyside Kennels” also out of Oklahoma, which led to his guilty plea on state animal fighting charges in 2004. Johnson selectively bred “champion” and “grand champion” fighting dogs — dogs that have respectively won three or five fights — to produce offspring with fighting traits and abilities desired by him and others for use in dog fights. Johnson marketed and sold stud rights and offspring from winning fighting dogs to other dog fighters looking to incorporate the Mal Kant Kennels “bloodline” into their own dog fighting operations. His trafficking of fighting dogs to other dog fighters across the country contributed to the growth of the dog fighting industry and allowed Johnson to profit financially.

Under federal law, it is illegal to fight dogs in a venture that effects interstate commerce and to possess, train, transport, deliver, sell, purchase, or receive dogs for fighting purposes.

If convicted, Johnson faces a maximum penalty on each count of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The FBI’s Shreveport Resident Agency office is investigating the case.

Trial Attorney Sarah Brown and Senior Trial Attorney Ethan Eddy of ENRD’s Environmental Crimes Section are prosecuting the case, with assistance from Assistant U.S. Attorney Jordan Howanitz for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — True Heaven Heflin, 25, of Greenville, has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for trafficking a 15-year-old Greenville student.

Evidence obtained in the investigation revealed that the minor victim went to a party over Christmas break in 2022 where she met Heflin. Heflin then took the minor victim to her residence and forced the victim to engage in sexual acts for money. Heflin held the minor victim for over a week before the teen was able to escape.

“If you abuse and exploit children for money, we will find you, we will charge you, and we will ensure you go to prison. Human trafficking inflicts profound and lasting damage on its victims and our community,” declared Acting U.S. Attorney Brook B. Andrews for the District of South Carolina. “We, in collaboration with our law enforcement partners, will continue to tirelessly investigate and prosecute these despicable acts until our children and communities are safe.”

“The successful prosecution and sentencing of True Heflin exemplifies what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies collaborate to tackle the horrific crime of human trafficking. This case serves as a reminder of our unwavering commitment to seeking justice for victims and holding traffickers accountable,” said Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis. “Human trafficking has been — and will continue to be — a top priority for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. We will persist in defending and advocating for those who cannot defend themselves, ensuring that those responsible for such heinous acts are brought to justice.”

United States District Judge Bruce H. Hendricks sentenced Heflin to 300 months imprisonment, to be followed by a lifetime court-ordered supervision. There is no parole in the federal system. Heflin was also ordered to pay the victim $5,000 in restitution. Heflin pleaded guilty to human trafficking conspiracy in November 2024.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Maintaining mobility with aging means planning ahead

Source: The Conversation – Canada – By Brenda Vrkljan, Professor of Occupational Therapy, School of Rehabilitation Science, McMaster University

Older people often miss or ignore signs that their own mobility is waning, because it typically happens gradually. (Shutterstock)

Winter weather makes it hard for everyone to get around. But for many, especially older people, the whole world can feel like an icy sidewalk every day of the year, particularly if they already have problems with their mobility that puts them at higher risk of falling.

For people who have trouble getting around, stairs, bathrooms and kitchens are among the most treacherous features of typical homes, loaded with potential hazards, such as hard surfaces, slippery floors, accessing high and low cupboards, elevation changes and more.

The danger is worse at night, especially for older people due in part to changes in vision and certain medications.

Vehicles are another major challenge for people with mobility issues, especially getting into and out of them, let alone driving them.

Pope Francis showed his own vulnerability in early February when he stumbled after his walking stick broke. He managed to stay upright but had fallen twice in the preceding weeks. When we don’t move around as much, other health issues can arise, requiring hospitalization.

The Pope’s public stumble and slow recovery triggered concerns over the 88-year-old’s health and gave the rest of us good reason to consider our own vulnerability.

    Recognizing risks

As a professor of rehabilitation science who researchers and teaches occupational therapy with a focus on optimizing mobility in later life, I spend my working days thinking about how to make life better by keeping seniors living well and reducing the risks they face.

In my personal life, I do my best to help my mother stay healthy. I recognize that some of the adapted features we made to her daily activities and living space are helpful to me knowing, as her primary caregiver, that her environment is set up to support her independence.

Older people often miss or ignore signs that their own mobility is waning, because it typically happens gradually. We may not be conscious of how much we’re using our arms to get out of a chair, that we’re leaning against the wall of the shower while washing, hesitating to pick up a dropped item, or less comfortable driving at night or at higher speeds.

These are some of the early signs we may need help. Since it’s easy to miss them, it’s important to think consciously and deliberately to avoid a fall or a collision that results in major injury like a broken hip, wrist or worse.

No one takes pleasure in admitting it might be time for a grab bar or a cane, but assistive devices can prevent injury. Even those who already use such devices may not recognize that their needs change over time, or that their equipment — even a cane — may need maintenance or replacement.

Failing to take precautions, though, can have severe and lasting repercussions, so it’s vital to be honest with ourselves.

    Prevention and risk reduction

The upside of taking stock of our situation is that by preventing falls and driving safely, we can continue to participate fully for much longer than was possible even a generation ago.

For people who have trouble getting around, stairs, bathrooms and kitchens are among the most treacherous features of typical homes.

There is plenty of research to show, of course, that diet and exercise can make a significant difference in preserving and even improving mobility while reducing vulnerability, but people don’t always pause to consider their physical environment and other strategies until after an injury.

Here are some ways you can help yourself or someone in your life whose mobility may be waning:

    • Install low lighting — even a plug-in night light or two can help — that illuminates the path from bedroom to bathroom.

    • Add a second handrail to cover both sides of staircases inside and outside of the home, especially steep stairs that lead to the basement or attic.

    • Stay up-to-date with vision and hearing tests. Always use the eyeglasses and hearing aids, as prescribed.

    • Install “tall” toilets that make sitting and standing up easier.

    • Scan the house for tripping hazards, such as throw rugs, and remove them.

    • Re-organize cupboards to put the most frequently used items in easy reach.

    • Use non-slip footwear made with safety in mind. The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute has done some helpful studies on footwear and safety, including in ice and snow.

    • Schedule a home visit from a licensed occupational therapist who can make recommendations suited to your mobility needs, including taking a look at your mobility devices to be sure they are still suitable and are in good working order. An occupational therapist together with a qualified contractor can ensure grab bars, ramps and other features are installed appropriately.

    • Plan ahead for the time when you can no longer drive by considering alternative transit options and lifestyle changes that might be necessary.

Mobility matters because it allows us to live independently and participate fully in our everyday activities. By proactively addressing potential hazards, we can enhance our quality of life and continue to enjoy the freedom that mobility provides.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: Secretary-General’s remarks to the General Assembly to mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade [as delivered]

    Source: United Nations secretary general

The transatlantic slave trade is an indelible stain on the conscience of humanity.

    Thank you.

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

BEIJING, March 25 — China will steadfastly expand its high-standard opening-up and keep improving its business environment, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao said here Tuesday.

It is hoped that Boeing will seize the opportunity, deepen its cooperation with China’s aviation industry, and provide more high-quality products and services to Chinese businesses and consumers, Wang said when meeting with Brendan Nelson, senior vice president of the Boeing Company and president of Boeing Global.

As the world’s two largest economies, China and the United States should carry out mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation, which conforms to the fundamental interests of both sides, the minister said.

He expressed the hope that Boeing will play an active role in maintaining the stability and health of the global aviation industry ecosystem, and contribute to the development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations.

Noting that aviation is a highly globalized industry with deeply integrated production and supply chains, Nelson said Boeing will continue to honor its commitment to the Chinese market, expand its investment in China, and support the growth of China’s air transportation sector.

The United States and China have complementary strengths and are interdependent. Mutually beneficial cooperation meets the expectations of businesses on both sides, he said.

Boeing is ready to continue playing a constructive role in the healthy, stable development of U.S.-China relations, he added.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: York says ‘Yes to Quit’ with new smoking campaign

    Source: City of York

York is saying ‘Yes to Quit’ with a new smoking campaign. The Yes to Quit campaign has launched across TV, radio, transport links and social media this week, throughout Yorkshire and the Humber.

It asks audiences ‘what will you miss?’ more than smoking, such as weddings, births or quality time with others –  two in three smokers will miss these by dying too soon unless they quit.

The campaign coincides with the Tobacco and Vapes Bill’s progression through Parliament, which aims to create a smoke-free generation by restricting the sale of tobacco products and regulating vaping.

Across, York, 8.1% of adults smoke cigarettes, approximately 14,000 people. Smoking is still the most preventable cause of death. In York the cost to the NHS is £4.41m per year with an additional £2.64m to social care per year.

The Yes to Quit website, yestoquit.co.uk, shares information about ways to quit and links to local stop smoking services including City of York Council’s Health Trainer team. York residents can get in touch for free support at york.gov.uk/HealthTrainers or phone 01904 553377.

Peter Roderick, Director of Public Health at City of York Council, said:

“By working collaboratively, we’ve been able to launch a mass media, population level campaign right across Yorkshire and the Humber which aims to reach more people and help them to find the services right for them when quitting smoking.

“Most people who smoke get addicted as children and desperately want to stop. This new campaign emphasises the harms of tobacco and provides information and support to help people say yes to quitting.”

Councillor Lucy Steels-Walshaw, Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care at City of York Council, said:

“Our Health Trainer team have a great track record of success in supporting residents to stop smoking. Their work is part of our core commitment to help improve the health and wellbeing of people who live and work in York.

I’m pleased to support this regional campaign to highlight both the risks of smoking and the local support available.”

    Scott Crosby, Associate Director for the Humber and North Yorkshire Centre for Excellence in Tobacco Control said;

“This campaign is a stark reminder that smoking kills two in three long-term smokers – claiming over 7,500 lives each year in Yorkshire and Humber alone. That’s why we are uniting across the region to help people quit and protect future generations from ever starting.

“The Third Reading of the historic Tobacco and Vapes Bill is a once-in-a-generation chance to protect people from this uniquely lethal product and make it easier for smokers to quit for good. Most people who smoke want to stop, and with the right support – whether stop smoking services, quitting aids, or switching completely to vaping – it’s much easier. Thousands successfully quit every year and live healthier, longer lives.

“If you’ve tried before, don’t stop trying. Your next attempt could be the one that works.”

Mum of two Alex, from York, who quit with York Health Trainers, said:

“I hit 30 and thought, I’m not sure I want to do this for another 10 years. Stopping smoking was relatively easy compared to what I thought it was going to be.

“The service was bang on, from the way the sessions were delivered, to how regular they were, to the way you felt supported.”

Source: United Kingdom – Government Statements

    News story

MMO confirms I-VMS legislation schedule for 2025

MMO introduces licence condition for I-VMS ahead of new legislation

In a variation notice issued this week, Marine Management Organisation (MMO), introduces a new licence condition that will come into force on 12 May 2025, requiring the use of a type-approved I-VMS device on any English under-12m vessel undertaking a trip to sea.

This early notice of the incoming requirements is the next stage of MMO’s preparations to support English fishers ahead of statutory legislation, expected to be laid by government later this year.

This announcement follows the roll-out of I-VMS devices which saw over 80% of industry purchase and install an I-VMS device, with more than £1.57million in European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) grant funding paid out to fishers.

The main requirement of this licence condition is for fishers to have installed a functioning type-approved I-VMS device that shares positional data during a trip to sea.

Sean Douglas, MMO’s Head of Regulatory Assurance, said:

“Good data is essential for sensible decision-making to protect fishing for the future. We’ve worked closely with the new government, DEFRA and suppliers to move forward with I-VMS for the benefit of both fishers and fisheries management.

“This announcement should assure industry that I-VMS legislation is just around the corner. We urge those in the under-12m fleet who are actively fishing to make use of the coming weeks to ensure they have a device, switch it on and check things are working as they should.

Mike Cohen, Chief Exec of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO) shared, in support of I-VMS:

“Today, many different people want to use the sea for many different purposes. Whether it is building a seaweed farm, installing wind turbines, declaring a conservation area, or something else. All of these things carry a risk that fishermen will get pushed out.

“We have to defend our access to the traditional grounds that our industry depends on. The best way to do that is with data that proves how important those areas are to us. Larger vessels in the national fleet have been able to do that for some time now, thanks to the VMS devices they carry. In every map of fishing effort in UK waters, however, there is always a stark gap where the inshore fleet works.

“I-VMS is the tool that we need to close that gap and defend the inshore fleet. With the data it provides, we can prove how important the inshore grounds are to fishing businesses and fishing communities. The better the coverage we have, the stronger our argument”.

    A marine future with I-VMS

Sean Douglas, continued: “The data from I-VMS will, for the first time, provide a true understanding of what is happening across England’s marine environment. It will allow for smarter, evidence-based, decisions when it comes to marine developments, marine and fisheries management planning, regulatory displacement, niche and seasonal fisheries, as well as conservation and stock protection.

“The licence condition is very much an introductory stage to support industry ahead of the statutory instrument, due this year. During this time, we will take a measured approach to enforcement, working with industry and suppliers to address issues. However, we will take action where necessary to ensure a level playing field”.

“The sooner devices start transmitting data, the sooner fishers will become familiar with their device and tracking software, will know what is expected of them and can work with us – and their supplier – to resolve any unexpected issues.

“Importantly, I-VMS data will also help fishers track their own activity and better understand their fishing effort.”

Device suppliers provide either an app or web portal for fishers to track their own I-VMS data. These can be used to help fishers refine their efforts and business plans, as well as provide evidence to challenge developments or closed areas and use it as evidence in any compliance or conflict resolution.

MMO has advised that a small minority of the under-12m fleet is yet to take any action, foregoing MMO’s offer of grant funding during the earlier roll-out period. But the message is clear:  If you’re an English under-12m fisher planning a trip to sea from 12 May 2025, you must get a device now.

The I-VMS hotline remains open for enquiries on 01900 508618, Monday to Friday (9am to 5pm) and emails can be sent to ivms@marinemanagement.org.uk. Updated guidance can be found online at: gov.uk/mmo/i-vms-england.

    Source:

On 16 February 2025, the Government announced that it will impose a temporary ban on foreign purchases of established dwellings for at least 2 years and crack down on land banking.

From 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2027, foreign persons, including temporary residents and foreign-owned companies, cannot apply to buy an established dwelling in Australia unless an exception applies. These limited exceptions will include investments that significantly increase housing supply or support the availability of housing supply, and for the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.

Other existing exceptions remain in place, such as for purchases by:

    • permanent residents
    • New Zealand citizens
    • spouses of Australian citizens, permanent residents or New Zealand citizens (when purchased as joint tenants).

A review will be undertaken to determine if the ban should be extended beyond 31 March 2027.

We will enforce the ban through enhanced screening of foreign investment proposals relating to residential properties.

We will carry out a full audit of current foreign investment approvals for vacant residential land development.

We will also take a tougher stance on compliance of foreign investment approvals for vacant residential land development. This will help ensure that foreign investors who have bought or want to buy vacant residential land meet development conditions.

ALBUQUERQUE – An Albuquerque man has pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking and firearms charges, agreeing to forfeit multiple weapons, vehicles, and over $64,000 in cash seized during a raid on his residence.

According to court records, on March 23, 2023, the FBI SWAT team executed a search warrant at Jerry Bezie‘s residence in the South Valley. During the operation, agents seized more than 16 pounds of methamphetamine and approximately 11,400 grams of fentanyl pills, multiple firearms, ammunition, and other items indicative of drug trafficking activities. In his plea agreement, Bezie admitted to possessing these substances with the intent to distribute and admitted that, as a convicted felon, he was legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

As part of his plea agreement, Bezie has agreed to forfeit numerous items, including:

    • Firearms: A Glock 19 9mm pistol, a Glock 29 10mm pistol, an FN Five-seven 5.7×28 caliber pistol, a Sig Sauer P229 .357 sig caliber pistol, and a Steyr-Daimler Puch Aug/SA .223 caliber rifle.

The FBI’s investigation linked Bezie to Julian Leyba, with both men allegedly supplying fentanyl sold along Central Avenue in Albuquerque. On March 23, 2023, the FBI raided Leyba’s residence in Northeast Albuquerque as well. While no drugs were seized from Leyba’s home, investigators found six firearms, including a machine gun, which he was prohibited from possessing due to prior felony convictions.

Leyba pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and possession a machine gun on May 2, 2024, and was sentenced to 70 months in prison followed by three years of supervise release.

At sentencing, Bezie faces a mandatory 60 months for drug trafficking and an additional 60 months for possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, for a total of 120 months, and up to life in prison. This sentence will be followed by not less than four years of supervised release. Additionally, Bezie faces a fine not to exceed $5 million or twice the pecuniary gain to the defendant.

Acting U.S. Attorney Holland S. Kastrinand Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, made the announcement today.

The FBI’s Violent Gang Task Force (VGTF) investigated this case with assistance from the Albuquerque Police Department, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Paul Mysliwiec is prosecuting the case.
