  • MIL-OSI China: China boosts autonomous driving with expanding test zones, policy support

    In Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, also known as Beijing E-Town, drivers and pedestrians have grown increasingly accustomed to driverless robotaxis.

    But autonomous technology isn’t just limited to ride-hailing in the area. Driverless sanitation vehicles now sweep the streets along pre-programmed routes, while autonomous minibuses shuttle back and forth along tree-lined avenues.

    This futuristic reality can be traced back to September 2020, when the Chinese capital launched the world’s first high-level autonomous driving demonstration zone.

    Since then, the city has completed the intelligent deployment of roadside infrastructure across 600 square kilometers and plans to expand the demonstration zone to approximately 3,000 square kilometers between the fourth and sixth ring roads.

    To date, the demonstration zone has issued road test permits to 33 companies, covering some 900 vehicles with a combined autonomous driving test mileage of over 32 million kilometers, accounting for over a quarter of the total national autonomous test mileage.

    Autonomous driving has become a key area in China’s push to integrate digital technologies with the real economy. As pilot projects expand, cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen are advancing multi-scenario applications, from ride-hailing and logistics to public transit and street cleaning.

    Beijing, home to leading companies in the field, including Baidu, Pony.ai and Neolix, is forging the road ahead with both regulation and deployment. In April, a new local regulation on autonomous vehicles took effect, providing a clear regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles equipped with Level 3 and higher systems.

    Shanghai and Shenzhen are also accelerating development. Shanghai recently expanded its autonomous driving test roads to more than 750 kilometers, while Shenzhen has rolled out AI-powered buses on several urban routes. Backed by dedicated legislation and cutting-edge vehicle-road coordination systems, both cities are rapidly scaling their smart mobility ecosystems.

    At a modern distribution facility in the E-Town operated by autonomous driving vehicle producer Neolix, a fleet of autonomous delivery vehicles glides in one after another.

    Inside the sleek white building, each vehicle halts precisely beneath a massive overhead conveyor belt.

    As the vehicles open their lids automatically, parcels slide down from the second floor, neatly filling each compartment. Once loaded, the lids close, and the vehicles quietly roll out, ready for dispatch.

    Powered by an intelligent backend scheduling system, the factory can coordinate hundreds of autonomous delivery vehicles with various sorting lanes, achieving precise and efficient package matching.

    “Our autonomous vehicles are primarily operating regularly in Beijing’s Shunyi District and E-town. Overall, we can help courier companies reduce logistics costs by around 50 percent while improving delivery efficiency by roughly 30 percent,” said Yang Zhe, the co-founder of Neolix.

    “Our vehicle is equipped with 12 cameras and a LiDAR, enabling full 360-degree perception with no blind spots,” Yang added. “When the system detects an obstacle, it locks onto the object, calculates its size and distance, and then decides whether to continue forward or take an alternate route.”

    By the end of August 2024, Chinese public security authorities had issued 16,000 test licenses for autonomous vehicles, with some 32,000 kilometers of roads nationwide opened for autonomous vehicle testing, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

    As intelligent vehicle technology advances rapidly, safety has become a core industry challenge. From data privacy to AI misjudgments in autonomous driving, experts stress the need for clearer safety boundaries as AI plays a deeper role in the sector.

    “As AI reaches a certain stage of development, it is essential to address deeper issues spanning industry, technology, safety, as well as social, legal, and ethical dimensions,” said Su Linke, an executive from the new energy vehicle brand Deepal.

    Finding ways for AI to serve both vehicles and people better and to help foster more harmonious social relationships should be a shared priority in advancing the industry, Su added.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Man facing charges after string of early-morning offences

    A 44-year-old man faces a number of charges after crashing a stolen vehicle in Pakuranga this morning following a string of burglaries.

    The man is thought to have been responsible for seven reported burglaries, stealing two cars, and getting into three crashes, between around 5:10am and 5:50am today.

    It began in Udys Road where Police received a call from someone reporting an unknown man had broken into their house, and a physical confrontation took place. Fortunately there were no injuries, and the man left on foot.

    Within minutes, Police received two further separate reports from residents on Udys Road – one reporting a man trying to force entry to her home, and a second reporting their front door being smashed.

    Residents of a Pakuranga Road property called Police just after 5:30am, reporting that an unknown man had forced entry into their house armed with a knife. There were no injuries reported, before the man left.

    Around 5:40am, Police were made aware of an incident on Grammar School Road, where they had seen a person run off towards their neighbour’s about 10 minutes earlier.

    By this stage, a Police dog unit was in the area and had come across the man on a separate Grammar School Road property.

    Minutes later, Police received another call from someone reporting the man had kicked in the front door to their house and was smashing items inside.

    He stole this person’s car keys and drove off in their vehicle, crashing through a gate and onto Pakuranga Road, then onto Udys Road.

    A Police unit was in the vicinity, before the vehicle crashed at the intersection of Udys Road and Reeves Road.

    The man has then stolen another car from a property on Reeves Road, which Police pursued for a short time before it crashed at the intersection of Ti Rakau Drive and Tiraumea Drive, causing significant damage to a fence.

    The man ran off on foot, before being arrested a short time later.

    He will appear in court at a later date.

    A leading Middle East analyst has pushed back against US President Donald Trump’s dismissal of the conclusion of his own national intelligence chief, who said in April that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon.

    Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, said in an interview that Tulsi Gabbard, the US Director of National Intelligence, who issued the determination on Iran, “does not speak for herself” or her team alone.

    “She speaks for all the intelligence agencies combined,” Bishara said.

    “This intelligence is supposed to be sound. This is not just one person or one team saying something. It’s the entire intelligence community in the United States. He [Trump] would dismiss them? For what?

    “For a lie by a rogue element called Benjamin Netanyahu, who has lied all his life, a con artist who is indicted for his crimes in Gaza? It’s just astounding.”

    Chris Van Hollen and Elizabeth Warren, two Democrats in the US Senate, have urged the world to pay attention to what Israel continues to do in Gaza amid its conflict with Iran.

    “Don’t look away,” Van Hollen wrote on X. “Since the start of the Israel-Iran war 7 days ago, over 400 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, many shot while seeking food.

    “It’s unconscionable that Netanyahu has not allowed international orgs to resume food delivery.”

    Warren said the Israeli prime minister “may think no one will notice what he’s doing in Gaza while he bombs Iran”.

    “People face starvation. 55,000 killed. Aid workers and doctors turned away at the border. Shooting at innocent people desperate for food. The world sees you, Benjamin Netanyahu,” she wrote.

    ‘A trust gap’
    The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, appealed for an end to the fighting between Israel and Iran, saying that Teheran had repeatedly stated that it was not seeking nuclear weapons.

    “Let’s recognise there is a trust gap,” he said.

    “The only way to bridge that gap is through diplomacy to establish a credible, comprehensive and verifiable solution — including full access to inspectors of the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency], as the United Nations technical agency in this field.

    “For all of that to be possible, I appeal for an end to the fighting and the return to serious negotiations.”

    Meanwhile, in New Zealand hope for freedom for Palestinians remained high among a group of trauma-struck activists in Cairo.

    In spite of extensive planning, the Global March To Gaza (GMTG) delegation of about 4000 international aid volunteers was thwarted in its mission to walk from Cairo to Gaza to lend support.

    WASHINGTON — U.S. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) introduced the Small Business Tax Fairness and Compliance Simplification Act. This legislation allows beauty industry small businesses, such as hair stylists, barbers, and nail technicians, to qualify for the Section 45(B) federal tax credit and provides a safe harbor for these businesses to establish procedures for tipped employees to better report their wages without attracting additional tax liability. 

    The beauty industry is the second largest tip-based sector but is excluded from the Section 45(B) federal tip tax credit. Currently, the tax credit is only available for the restaurant industry and not the beauty industry. Providing beauty industry small businesses with access to the Section 45(B) credit would allow them to hire more employees and decrease their federal tax burden.

    “The beauty services industry is expanding rapidly, with entrepreneurs supporting over 1.3 million hardworking Americans,” said Senator Scott. “This important effort to modernize the tax code ensures small businesses—like salons and barbershops—have a fair shot at success. I’m proud to lead this bipartisan legislation that will support these business owners and their employees in building wealth and achieving their own American Dream.” 

    “It is long past time that we allow small businesses in the beauty industry to qualify for this federal tax credit so they have more opportunities to grow their businesses, create more jobs, and fuel our economy.     Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged the international community to embrace “inner peace” as a “global policy” and make yoga a collective global responsibility.

    Speaking at the 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations in Visakhapatnam, the Prime Minister called upon countries to adopt yoga not just as a personal or cultural practice, but as a unifying force for humanity.

    “I would like to take this opportunity to urge the global community, on this important occasion, to let this International Yoga Day mark the beginning of Yoga for Humanity. Let this be the day when inner peace becomes a global policy, where yoga is embraced not just as a personal practice but as a powerful tool for global partnership and unity. Let every country and every society make yoga a shared responsibility, a common contribution toward collective well-being,” the Prime Minister said.

    The event was held along the scenic Visakhapatnam coastline, with Indian Navy ships stationed near the shore, adding to the grandeur of the celebration.

    PM Modi was joined by lakhs of yoga enthusiasts, residents, and dignitaries from Andhra Pradesh.

    Calling for a global mass movement through yoga, PM Modi added, “Come, let us all together make yoga a mass movement — a movement that takes the world towards peace, health, and harmony; where every person begins the day with yoga and finds balance in life; where every society is connected to yoga and free from stress; where yoga becomes the medium to bind humanity together; and where ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’ becomes a global resolution.”

    At the start of his address, the Prime Minister extended greetings to people across the world on the occasion of International Yoga Day, marking its 11th year of celebration since the United Nations recognized June 21 as the global day for yoga in 2014.

    In a message about yoga’s role in connecting humanity with nature and one another, PM Modi said, “Yoga teaches us that we are not isolated individuals — we are an integral part of nature. In the beginning, it helps us take care of our own health and wellness. But gradually, this awareness expands, and we begin to care not only for ourselves but also for our environment, our society, and our planet. Yoga is a system that takes us from ‘Me’ to ‘We’.”

    The Prime Minister also praised the efforts of the Andhra Pradesh government and extended special thanks to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan for organizing the event. He called their leadership “inspiring” and described the state’s initiative to promote yoga as “commendable.”

    “Yoga is for everyone — beyond boundaries, beyond backgrounds, beyond age or physical ability. It is a universal gift that unites humanity in health, harmony, and consciousness. Friends, I am truly delighted that we are gathered here in Visakhapatnam, a city that beautifully blends nature with progress.     The Prime Minister reflected on India’s 2014 proposal at the United Nations to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day, which received record-time support from over 170 countries. He noted that yoga has since grown into a worldwide practice symbolizing peace, balance, and cooperation.

    This year’s celebrations saw participation from lakhs of people across states.

    BISHKEK, June 21 (Xinhua) — “When we were children, we thought about how to keep livestock, and now young people are learning from us how to better serve tourists,” said Marat Rysaliev, 54, a resident of Kazarman village in Kyrgyzstan’s Jalal-Abad region. He credited the new road built with Chinese construction workers for the big change.

    Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country. Its capital Bishkek in the north and Jalal-Abad and Osh in the south are important economic areas of the country. However, traffic on the old highway connecting the north and south of Kyrgyzstan was inconvenient.

    “The road used to be bad, gravel. Accidents often happened on it,” recalls M. Rysaliev. “Heavy-duty vehicles like semi-trailers never came here. And the materials and tools needed for construction could not be brought to us.”

    As one of the first countries to support and participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road, Kyrgyzstan has cooperated with China in the construction of the North-South alternative highway. The new transport route, with a total length of 433 km, has brought real conveniences and improved the well-being of local residents, and has given new impetus to the development of areas located along it.

    “After the construction of the new highway was completed, it became very convenient for people to get to Jalal-Abad, and now you can get to Issyk-Kul much faster. Large loads can be easily brought,” shared M. Rysaliev, adding that there are more and more tourists in Kazarman, and a significant part of the houses in the village were given to them. And in order to provide guests with better services, local residents are beginning to study foreign languages.

    Azamat Mamyrbayev is a restaurant owner in Kazarman. He enthusiastically noted the tangible benefits that the alternative North-South highway has brought to local residents. “Our residents participated in the construction of the highway. They began to receive higher wages, their solvency increased. And my restaurant business took off,” he said.

    A. Mamyrbayev told Xinhua that he really likes driving on the new highway. “I often use this road to travel to Jalal-Abad and Bishkek. The road is very good, standard, and cars have started breaking down less,” he said.

    However, the construction of such a road was not easy. The construction work of the first and second stages of the highway was carried out by the China Road company

    According to Jin Zhe, due to the difficulties in construction work and the special geographical conditions along the route of the new highway, the builders developed special construction plans. “Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country, so we built a tunnel about 4 km long. The route of the road passes through the Naryn River, the largest waterway in the country. We built two large overpass bridges for this. All this helped accumulate a lot of experience for the implementation of similar large-scale infrastructure projects in mountainous areas in the future,” he added.

    As the head of the Toguz-Toro district of the Jalal-Abad region Manas Murataliev stated, the alternative North-South highway is historically significant for the district. Its construction greatly helped improve the quality of life of the population.

    “It was difficult for residents of our district to travel to Bishkek. For a long time, communications were poorly developed,” said M. Murataliev. “Now the journey to the capital along the new road takes only 5-6 hours. Previously, it took as much as 8-9 hours and even longer.”

    The head of the Toguz-Toro district also emphasized that with the opening of the new highway, local and foreign investors are coming to the district. According to him, this will contribute to the development of tourism and the hotel business of the district.

    “It was the Chinese builders who built this unique road through the mountain and with their hard work made a huge contribution to the economic development of our region and Kyrgyzstan as a whole. Our residents are very grateful to them,” added M. Murataliev. –0–

    BEIJING, June 20 — The National Development and Reform Commission on Friday said that it has allocated 50 million yuan (about 6.97 million U.S. dollars) from China’s central budget to bolster flood relief efforts in Hunan Province.

    The funds will be directed toward restoring infrastructure and public services in the central province’s affected regions, according to the commission.

    Severe flooding has recently struck the province, with the city of Zhangjiajie and the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture among the areas hit hardest.

    The National Disaster Reduction Commission on Friday activated a Level-IV emergency response to flooding.

    BEIJING, June 20 — China’s health authorities have introduced a set of guidelines to strengthen the management of projects involving clinical collaboration between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine in the treatment of major and intractable diseases.

    The guidelines outline measures that emphasize long-term cooperation mechanisms and enhanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities through integration.

    Institutions involved in such projects are encouraged to carry out in-depth interdisciplinary collaboration and joint research efforts to enhance clinical efficacy through sharing laboratories and research centers.

    Efforts will include high-quality basic and clinical research in integrated medicine and the acceleration of translating research results, such as patented inventions and new TCM formulations, clinical practice and wider application.

    The collaboration initiative forms part of a broader national plan to give full play to the role of TCM in treating complex diseases, infectious diseases, and chronic conditions.

    Authorities aim to build a nationwide TCM-Western medicine network, drawing on the strengths of both systems to develop standardized and evidence-based treatment protocols for major diseases.

    The initiative was launched in December 2024 and is set to run for three years, according to authorities.

    Iran and Israel exchanged fresh attacks early on Saturday, a day after Tehran said it would not negotiate over its nuclear programme while under threat and Europe tried to keep peace talks alive.
    Shortly after 2:30 a.m. in Israel (2330 GMT on Friday), the Israeli military warned of an incoming missile barrage from Iran, triggering air raid sirens across parts of central Israel, including Tel Aviv, as well as in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

    Interceptions were visible in the sky over Tel Aviv, with explosions echoing across the metropolitan area as Israel’s air defence systems responded.

    At the same time, Israel launched a new wave of attacks against missile storage and launch infrastructure sites in Iran, the Israeli military said.
    Sirens also sounded in southern Israel, said Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency service. An Israeli military official said Iran had fired five ballistic missiles and that there were no immediate indications of any missile impacts.

    There were no initial reports of casualties.

    The emergency service released images showing a fire on the roof of a multi-storey residential building in central Israel. Local media reported that the fire was caused by debris from an intercepted missile. Israel began attacking Iran last Friday, saying its longtime enemy was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. Iran, which says its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes, retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Israel.

    Israel is widely assumed to possess nuclear weapons. It neither confirms nor denies this.

    Its air attacks have killed 639 people in Iran, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, a U.S.-based human rights organisation that tracks Iran. The dead include the military’s top echelon and nuclear scientists.

    In Israel, 24 civilians have been killed in Iranian missile attacks, according to authorities.

    TALKS SHOW LITTLE PROGRESS

    Iran has repeatedly targeted Tel Aviv, a metropolitan area of around 4 million people and the country’s business and economic hub, where some critical military assets are also located.
    Israel said it had struck dozens of military targets on Friday, including missile production sites, a research body it said was involved in nuclear weapons development in Tehran and military facilities in western and central Iran.

    Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said there was no room for negotiations with the U.S. “until Israeli aggression stops”. But he arrived in Geneva on Friday for talks with European foreign ministers at which Europe hopes to establish a path back to diplomacy.
    U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated that he would take as long as two weeks to decide whether the United States should enter the conflict on Israel’s side, enough time “to see whether or not people come to their senses”, he said.

    Trump said he was unlikely to press Israel to scale back its airstrikes to allow negotiations to continue.
    “I think it’s very hard to make that request right now. If somebody is winning, it’s a little bit harder to do than if somebody is losing, but we’re ready, willing and able, and we’ve been speaking to Iran, and we’ll see what happens,” he said.

    The Geneva talks produced little signs of progress, and Trump said he doubted negotiators would be able to secure a ceasefire.
    “Iran doesn’t want to speak to Europe. They want to speak to us.

    Europe is not going to be able to help in this one,” Trump said.
    Hundreds of U.S. citizens have fled Iran since the air war began, according to a U.S. State Department cable seen by Reuters.

    Israel’s envoy to the United Nations, Danny Danon, told the Security Council on Friday his country would not stop its attacks “until Iran’s nuclear threat is dismantled”. Iran’s U.N. envoy Amir Saeid Iravani called for Security Council action and said Tehran was alarmed by reports that the U.S. might join the war.

    Russia and China demanded immediate de-escalation.

    A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran was ready to discuss limitations on uranium enrichment but that it would reject any proposal that barred it from enriching uranium completely, “especially now under Israel’s strikes”.

    Sirens also sounded in southern Israel, said Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency service. An Israeli military official said Iran had fired five ballistic missiles and that there were no immediate indications of any missile impacts.

    There were no initial reports of casualties.

    The emergency service released images showing a fire on the roof of a multi-storey residential building in central Israel. Local media reported that the fire was caused by debris from an intercepted missile. Israel began attacking Iran last Friday, saying its longtime enemy was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. Iran, which says its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes, retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Israel.

    Israel is widely assumed to possess nuclear weapons. It neither confirms nor denies this.

    Its air attacks have killed 639 people in Iran, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, a U.S.-based human rights organisation that tracks Iran. The dead include the military’s top echelon and nuclear scientists.

    In Israel, 24 civilians have been killed in Iranian missile attacks, according to authorities.

    TALKS SHOW LITTLE PROGRESS

    Iran has repeatedly targeted Tel Aviv, a metropolitan area of around 4 million people and the country’s business and economic hub, where some critical military assets are also located.
    Israel said it had struck dozens of military targets on Friday, including missile production sites, a research body it said was involved in nuclear weapons development in Tehran and military facilities in western and central Iran.

    Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said there was no room for negotiations with the U.S. “until Israeli aggression stops”. But he arrived in Geneva on Friday for talks with European foreign ministers at which Europe hopes to establish a path back to diplomacy.
    U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated that he would take as long as two weeks to decide whether the United States should enter the conflict on Israel’s side, enough time “to see whether or not people come to their senses”, he said.

    Trump said he was unlikely to press Israel to scale back its airstrikes to allow negotiations to continue.
    “I think it’s very hard to make that request right now. If somebody is winning, it’s a little bit harder to do than if somebody is losing, but we’re ready, willing and able, and we’ve been speaking to Iran, and we’ll see what happens,” he said.

    The Geneva talks produced little signs of progress, and Trump said he doubted negotiators would be able to secure a ceasefire.
    “Iran doesn’t want to speak to Europe. They want to speak to us.

    Europe is not going to be able to help in this one,” Trump said.
    Hundreds of U.S. citizens have fled Iran since the air war began, according to a U.S. State Department cable seen by Reuters.

    Israel’s envoy to the United Nations, Danny Danon, told the Security Council on Friday his country would not stop its attacks “until Iran’s nuclear threat is dismantled”. Iran’s U.N. envoy Amir Saeid Iravani called for Security Council action and said Tehran was alarmed by reports that the U.S. might join the war.

    Russia and China demanded immediate de-escalation.

    A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran was ready to discuss limitations on uranium enrichment but that it would reject any proposal that barred it from enriching uranium completely, “especially now under Israel’s strikes”.

    Background: 

    New Hampshire is the only state in the contiguous 48 states to not have a dedicated, full-service VA hospital. 

    An Executive Order issued by President Trump on May 9th instructed VA to begin a feasibility study on expanding services to support a full-service medical center in New Hampshire within 30 days and submit an action plan to the President within 180 days. 

    Following the issuance of the Executive Order, Pappas led the New Hampshire delegation in a letter calling on VA Secretary Doug Collins to seriously and fully follow through on the feasibility study and action plan, with the goal of establishing a full-service VA hospital in New Hampshire. He also secured a commitment from VA Secretary Collins at a House Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing to engage with New Hampshire veterans and stakeholders as the Department conducts the study and develops its action plan.

    As a senior member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, Shaheen has worked tirelessly to make health care more accessible for New Hampshire veterans and has long worked to secure federal funding for VA health care sites throughout New Hampshire. The first piece of legislation she introduced in Congress was the Veterans Health Equity Act in 2009, which would require the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure that every state has a full-service veterans’ hospital or that comparable services are provided by contracting with in-state hospitals.

    The 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) is set to be celebrated on a grand scale on Saturday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the national event in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

    The theme for this year is “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” which echoes India’s vision of global wellness and reflects the integrated vision of well-being. It emphasises the interconnectedness of human and planetary health, drawing from the Indian ethos of “Sarve Santu Niramaya” (May all be free from disease).

    PM Modi arrived in Visakhapatnam on Friday evening and was received by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

    “#InternationalYogaDay On behalf of the people of Andhra Pradesh, I welcome Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji to our state for the celebration of International Yoga Day tomorrow. All the districts of Andhra Pradesh are geared up to participate in the grand culmination of #Yogandhra!” the Andhra CM said in a post on X.

    According to the Ministry of AYUSH, the Prime Minister will perform the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) with over 3 lakh participants at the Visakhapatnam venue, synchronised with over 10 lakh locations across the country under the ‘Yoga Sangam’ initiative.

    The mass demonstration will be held from 6:30 to 7:45 AM and is expected to attract unprecedented participation from across the country.

    He will be joined by Union Minister of State (IC) for AYUSH and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav, along with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, in a massive demonstration of India’s global wellness vision.

    More than 2 crore people are expected to participate in yoga sessions at over 1 lakh locations across the state.

    The Government of Andhra Pradesh is also coordinating a Guinness World Record attempt to mark the occasion.

    Additionally, the Andhra Pradesh government will award over 50 lakh yoga certificates to registered participants, making this decadal edition of IDY a truly historic moment in India’s health and wellness journey.

    As part of the celebrations in Visakhapatnam, a remarkable Surya Namaskar programme was organised at Andhra University today, where around 25,000 tribal children performed 108 Surya Namaskars in 108 minutes. This unique initiative highlighted the enthusiastic participation of tribal communities and reflected yoga’s deepening reach at the grassroots level.

    Delhi, too, is set to actively participate in the national celebration. Yoga events will be held at 109 locations across the capital, including a grand programme at the historic Red Fort on Saturday.

    Organised by Brahma Kumaris in collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH, and supported by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga and the Archaeological Survey of India, the Red Fort event will highlight the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”

    To ensure the inclusive reach of yoga’s benefits, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a letter to all Gram Pradhans, noting, “It is a matter of pride that yoga has positively transformed lives not only in India but across the world.”

    As in previous editions of IDY, the Prime Minister’s message has infused Gram Panchayats with renewed enthusiasm, resulting in a significant rise in yoga-related activities at the grassroots level, particularly in Panchayats, Anganwadis, and Community Health Centres. The introduction of 10 Signature Events to encourage public participation for IDY 2025 has elicited an unprecedented response from across the country and abroad.

    Against the target of 1 lakh registrations for the June 21 event, more than 11 lakh organisations and groups have registered for the Yoga Sangam event at their respective places through the Yoga portal of the Ministry of AYUSH.

    Rajasthan topped the list with 2.25 lakh registrations, followed by three more states that crossed the 1 lakh registration mark.

    To honour this milestone year, the Ministry of AYUSH has conceptualised 10 Signature Events, rolled out over 100 days. These events cater to different sections of society and showcase the evolving landscape of yoga in India and abroad.

    They include Yoga Sangam, which involves mass yoga demonstrations across over 1,00,000 locations alongside the national event; Yoga Bandhan, which includes international collaborations and the exchange of yoga delegations; Harit Yoga, which integrates yoga with environmental actions like tree plantations and cleanliness drives; and Yoga Park, which involves upgrading public parks into dedicated yoga spaces.

    It also includes Yoga Samavesh, an inclusive yoga outreach with customised protocols for marginalised groups; Yoga Prabhava, a comprehensive 10-year impact report on IDY and its societal outcomes; Yoga Connect, a global online yoga summit held on June 14, featuring global experts and policymakers; Yoga Unplugged, youth-centric campaigns combining tech, trends, and traditional yoga; Yoga Maha Kumbh, a series of large-scale events celebrating yoga’s cultural and spiritual dimensions; and Samyoga, which showcases the integration of yoga evidence with modern healthcare practices.

    The decadal celebration is being coordinated through a Whole-of-Government approach, involving ministries, departments, state governments, urban local bodies, and Indian missions abroad.

    Preparatory activities have been ongoing for weeks, with special drives, yoga camps, and competitions organised by various government bodies.

    Globally, Indian embassies and cultural centres are actively conducting yoga demonstrations and awareness campaigns, further strengthening India’s cultural diplomacy and leadership in wellness. With its strong foundation over the past ten years and enthusiastic participation from all sectors, IDY 2025 is poised to be a landmark moment in India’s wellness journey.

    The message is clear — yoga is not only a gift from India to the world but also a pathway to a healthier, more harmonious, and sustainable future for all.

    A man has been flown to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment after a serious assault at Dundee Beach late last night.

    Shortly after 11pm the Joint Emergency Services Communications Centre received a report of an alleged assault on a 55-year-old man by a group of people after a minor vehicle crash. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

    As a result of the alleged assault, the victim suffered serious injuries to his face.

    General Duties police, St John Ambulance and a CareFlight helicopter attended the scene before the man was flown to RDH where he underwent surgery.

    A crime scene was declared, and investigations are ongoing.

    XICHANG, June 20 — China sent a new satellite into space on Friday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the southwestern province of Sichuan.

    The satellite Chinasat-9C was launched at 8:37 p.m. (Beijing Time) by a Long March-3B carrier rocket, and entered the preset orbit successfully.

    The launch marks the 582nd flight mission of the Long March carrier rocket series.

    WASHINGTON – Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the arrest of Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, a criminal illegal alien and Tren de Aragua gang member who violently attacked a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agent and an FBI special agent.  

    “This Venezuelan national is a criminal illegal alien and Tren de Aragua gang member who violently attacked an ICE and FBI agent and has been charged with attempted murder,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Our ICE agents are facing a 500% increase surge in assaults against them. Our brave law enforcement puts their lives on the line every day to arrest terrorists, gang members, and other violent criminals that the previous administration released into American communities. Secretary Noem has been clear: anyone who assaults an ICE law enforcement officer will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”  

    On June 18, ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Omaha led an operation to arrest Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, a known Tren de Aragua terrorist, in Bellevue, Nebraska. As ICE and their law enforcement partners attempted to take him into custody, Hurtado-Cariaco launched a brutal and premeditated assault on an ICE HSI special agent.  

    During the attack, the illegal alien threw the ICE agent to the ground, slammed her head into the pavement, ripped off her body armor, and made repeated and physical violent contact. The agent sustained serious injuries to her head and arm and was immediately transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for treatment. The agent has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. Hurtado-Cariaco also assaulted an FBI agent during the incident.  

    Following the attack, Hurtado-Cariaco fled the scene but was apprehended approximately an hour later in the immediate area by ICE and coordinated law enforcement teams. 

    The Department of Justice charged Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco—an illegal alien from Venezuela—with attempted murder of a federal officer and assault of a federal officer with infliction of bodily injury.  

    Hurtado-Cariaco entered the U.S. illegally in 2023—and Border Patrol removed him. In 2024—under the Biden administration—he re-entered the U.S. illegally and was released into the country with a notice to appear.

    On June 18, ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Omaha led an operation to arrest Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, a known Tren de Aragua terrorist, in Bellevue, Nebraska. As ICE and their law enforcement partners attempted to take him into custody, Hurtado-Cariaco launched a brutal and premeditated assault on an ICE HSI special agent.  

    During the attack, the illegal alien threw the ICE agent to the ground, slammed her head into the pavement, ripped off her body armor, and made repeated and physical violent contact. The agent sustained serious injuries to her head and arm and was immediately transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for treatment. The agent has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. Hurtado-Cariaco also assaulted an FBI agent during the incident.  

    Following the attack, Hurtado-Cariaco fled the scene but was apprehended approximately an hour later in the immediate area by ICE and coordinated law enforcement teams. 

    The Department of Justice charged Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco—an illegal alien from Venezuela—with attempted murder of a federal officer and assault of a federal officer with infliction of bodily injury.  

    Hurtado-Cariaco entered the U.S. illegally in 2023—and Border Patrol removed him. In 2024—under the Biden administration—he re-entered the U.S. illegally and was released into the country with a notice to appear.

    WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump today signed Sen. John Kennedy’s (R-La.) joint resolution of disapproval under Congressional Review Act (CRA) procedures to block an Office of Comptroller (OCC) rule that hurts community banks by adding unnecessary red tape to the bank merger approval process.

    “When the Biden administration imposed crippling red tape on the bank merger process, they delivered a devastating blow to small community banks nationwide, strangling their ability to serve their customers. I’m deeply thankful to my House and Senate colleagues for passing this vital legislation and to President Trump for signing my resolution to dismantle this oppressive regulation,” said Kennedy.

    The Biden administration’s rule, which went into effect on Jan. 1, 2025, amended the Bank Merger Act of 1960 to make it harder for the OCC to approve healthy bank mergers quickly. Kennedy’s resolution would reverse the Biden administration’s misguided rule so that banks can stay in business and serve hardworking Americans.

    Sens. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.) and Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) cosponsored the Senate resolution.

    200 illegally dumped truck tyres in the Isla Gorge National Park

    Up to 200 illegally dumped truck tyres in the Isla Gorge National Park have prompted disgust and sparked a joint investigation to find the person or business responsible.

    During a bushfire in October 2024, the tyres were discovered in a deep ravine adjacent to the Leichhardt Highway.

    Located approximately 340km west of Bundaberg and 230km southwest of Rockhampton, Isla Gorge National Park features stunning gorges, sandstone outcrops and striking rock formations.

    Rangers from the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation and Banana Shire Council compliance officers launched an investigation.

    Senior Ranger Chris said the tyres posed a significant fire risk and had polluted a highly sensitive environment.

    “This shocking example of illegal dumping has delayed our planned burn program, and we are doing everything we can to remediate the site and find the person or business responsible,” Ranger Chris said.

    “We believe someone in the region knows who is responsible for dumping the tyres, and we are asking anyone with information to call us on 1300 130 372 or call the Banana Shire Council on (07) 4992 9500.”

    “Due to the remote location and the size of the tyres, rangers from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service were unable to remove them using conventional methods.

    “The complex clean-up operation involves a specialist contractor with a 130-tonne crane to remove and recycle the tyres.”

    “Visitors to our national parks don’t want to see illegally dumped waste, and that’s why we take a zero-tolerance approach to offenders.

    “People involved in illegally dumping waste can receive hefty fines, and they can be ordered to clean up the mess.

    Banana Shire Council Mayor Nev Ferrier said the dumping was unacceptable and showed no respect for the region’s natural environment.

    “It’s just disgraceful, whoever did this clearly has no regard for the land, our national parks, or the people who care for them,” Mayor Ferrier said.

    “The Isla Gorge is one of the most beautiful parts of our region, and to see it treated like this is heartbreaking.

    “I urge anyone who knows anything about this to do the right thing and come forward.”

    20 JUNE 2025 – The first cargo from Johan Castberg was loaded by the tanker Bodil Knutsen on 25 May, shipping around 700,000 barrels to Spain

    Only three months after coming on stream Johan Castberg is producing at peak capacity of 220,000 barrels of oil per day. This increases energy deliveries from the Barents Sea by 150%.

    The early operation phase has gone according to plan, the field reaching plateau production on 17 June. Seventeen of a total of 30 wells have been completed. The wells that have come on stream are producing as expected.

    “Johan Castberg represents a gamechanger for the importance of the Barents Sea for Norway’s future as an energy nation. Every three to four days, tank loads now depart from Johan Castberg, each of them worth around half a billion Norwegian kroner. The field will remain on stream for at least 30 years, delivering stable energy to Europe, generating high value for Norway, and ripple effects and jobs in Northern Norway,” says Kjetil Hove, Equinor’s executive vice president for Exploration & Production Norway.

    The new production vessel (FPSO) came on stream on 31 March, opening a new area for production in the Barents Sea. The first cargo was loaded by the tanker Bodil Knutsen on 25 May, shipping around 700,000 barrels to Spain. Almost all oil from the NCS is currently delivered to Europe.

    “The Johan Castberg volume base initially estimated at 450-650 million barrels, our ambition is to increase the reserves by between 250-550 million barrels. We are already planning six new wells to extend plateau production. The Isflak project will be a rapid field development with an investment decision at the end of the year and start-up in 2028. In addition, we will drill one or two exploration wells annually near Johan Castberg,” Hove adds.

    New exploration targets have been matured in the Johan Castberg area. Going forward, two rigs will be drilling new exploration wells in the areas around Johan Castberg and Goliat. They will also drill production wells for the fields.

    One person has been found deceased following a house fire in Marton this morning.

    Emergency services were called to the Calico Line property, between Bredins Line and Nga Tawa Road, about 6:10am, and found the house fully ablaze.

    Sadly, one person was found deceased at the property.

    A scene guard has been put in place and Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand investigators are carrying out a scene examination. The cause of the fire is still to be determined.

    At this time, no further details are available.

    Police have narrowed down an area of interest in the ongoing search for missing Christchurch woman Elisabeth ‘Lis’ Nicholls.

    Lis was last seen at the Chateau on the Park in Riccarton on the evening of Wednesday 4 June, and Police and her family remain desperate to locate her.

    Police have a possible sighting of Lis at the eastern end of Hagley Park, around the Park Terrace and Salisbury/Montreal Street areas around 8:25pm that night. [area pictured]

    We are appealing to anyone in this area in particular to please check your properties, and notify Police of anything unusual.

    We are also continuing to appeal to people across Christchurch to please search your backyards, sheds and sleepouts, and look under anything where a person could seek shelter.

    For anyone with CCTV, Police would like you to review any footage you have, especially if your cameras are facing the street, from 8.20pm to 10pm on Wednesday 4 June.

    While Lis went missing in the Riccarton area, she is physically strong, and may have walked some distance.

    Anyone who sees Lis should ring 111 immediately and use the reference number 250604/5465. Non-urgent information can be provided online at 105.police.govt.nz, using “Update Report,” quoting the same reference number.

    Dear Friends,
    After two years of fighting in federal court, we’ve won. Challengers to Idaho’s Vulnerable Child Protection Act have dismissed their lawsuit entirely and Idaho is now free to fully enforce our law protecting children in Idaho from harmful and irreversible gender transition procedures.
    This victory is more than just a legal win on paper. It’s a victory for parents, children, and the principle that kids suffering from gender dysphoria need love, support, and medical care rooted in biological reality. What they don’t need is life-altering drugs and surgeries with permanent consequences and added confusion.
    Idaho’s Vulnerable Child Protection Act protects children in Idaho by prohibiting doctors from providing puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and transition surgeries to children under 18 to alter their appearance or affirm their “gender identity” when that identity differs from their biological sex. The law makes providing these procedures a felony, recognizing that children cannot consent to experimental treatments with permanent consequences.
    When the state legislature passed this law in 2023, activists immediately sued to block it. A federal district judge initially sided with them, issuing an injunction that prevented Idaho from enforcing the law statewide. This meant doctors could continue performing these procedures on children across Idaho despite our state law.
    I immediately appealed the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, and in April 2024, the Supreme Court granted Idaho’s request, ruling that the lower court had overstepped by blocking the law for everyone in the state. The Court narrowed the injunction to apply only to the two families who sued, allowing Idaho to enforce our child protection law for all other children statewide. The case continued in the lower court until this week, when the challengers asked to dismiss their lawsuit entirely. The dismissal ends the remaining injunction, allowing Idaho to fully enforce our protections for all children in Idaho.
    Idaho was among the first states to pass a law protecting children from these dangerous procedures. We’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of drugs and procedures used on children with gender dysphoria, and it’s a preventable tragedy. The state has a duty to protect and support all children, and that’s why I’m proud to defend Idaho’s law that ensures children are not subjected to these life-altering drugs and procedures.
    The dismissal of this case also coincides with the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling this week upholding Tennessee’s similar law protecting children from these harmful practices. As more states follow Idaho’s lead in protecting vulnerable children, our victory sends a clear message that states have the authority to protect children from this evil.
    This fight has always been about more than just one law. It’s about supporting biological reality over ideology, and it’s about Idaho’s sovereignty to enact laws that reflect our values and protect our families. I was proud to fight for this law, and I am grateful that we’ve won the ability to protect Idaho’s kids from these procedures going forward.

    WASHINGTON, DC – On the campaign trail, Donald Trump pledged to cut energy costs in half.  As president, his policies are causing home energy prices to increase, with consumer electricity prices set to climb by hundreds of dollars under Trump and Republicans’ supposedly ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ which is a big ugly betrayal of working families.

    Electricity prices have already risen 4.5 percent in the last year, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Labor, and are estimated to surge this summer.  The National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA) projects home electricity bills are expected to reach their highest average rate in 12 years, at $784 for the summer period.

    In Rhode Island, researchers at Energy Innovation found that the House-passed big Trump bill, which repeals clean energy tax breaks and investments, “would increase annual energy bills by $55 million across Rhode Island households annually in 2030, swelling to more than $83 million in higher energy costs by 2035, for a total of $315 million during the budget window of 2025 to 2034.”  It also found the bill “would cost Rhode Island’s workforce 2,000 jobs in 2030 and nearly 1,500 jobs in 2035 as new investment in domestic energy and manufacturing falters.”

    “President Trump and Republicans’ outdated 20th century energy policies will raise families’ energy costs, kill jobs, and increase pollution.  Lowering energy prices and “future-proofing” our energy systems is an economic and security imperative.  But President Trump and Congressional Republicans are doing the opposite: increasing people’s and businesses’ electricity bills all over the country and undercutting sustainable investments in America’s energy grid.  The Republican-induced surge in energy prices will burn working-class living standards and line the pockets of special interests,” said Senator Reed.

    On average, Rhode Island residents spend about $285 per month on electricity, or $3,420 per year for the average household according to energysage.com.  But if Trump’s ‘Big Ugly’ reconciliation bill becomes law, those costs would increase significantly due to repeal of the vast majority of tax credits for low-carbon sources of electricity like wind, solar, batteries and geothermal power included in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

    The New York Times reports: “Repealing those credits could increase the average family’s energy bill by as much as $400 per year within a decade, according to several studies published this year.”

    Senator Reed says Trump’s outmoded policies and dysfunctional administration are increasing energy prices; failing to invest in the energy infrastructure America needs now and in the future; making America less energy secure; and costing the country good-paying, union jobs.

    With summer heat approaching, Senator Reed notes that those most impacted by higher utility bills are lower-income households, including seniors on fixed incomes, who often lack the resources to cover increased monthly payments.  

    “Not only are President Trump and Republicans doubling down on failed policies from the past, they are rescinding investments in forward looking renewable energy projects that are supporting good jobs and ready to come on line and lower prices.  And let’s be clear, they are doing this at the behest of highly profitable fossil fuel companies and conglomerates that are polluting the environment and squeezing consumers,” said Senator Reed.
