    CHICAGO, IL — Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson (IL-1) today issued the following statement in strong opposition to the Senate’s passage of the so-called “One Big Ugly Bill,” and pledged to vote against the legislation and do everything in his power to prevent it from becoming law:

    “Today, the U.S. Senate narrowly passed the ‘One Big Ugly Bill,’ a sweeping measure that threatens the economic security, health, and dignity of working families in Chicago and across the nation. I want to make it absolutely clear: I will vote NO on this bill, and I will fight with every tool at my disposal to stop this reckless attack on our communities.

    This legislation would slash $290 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), putting over 205,000 Illinoisans—including tens of thousands of my constituents in Chicago—at risk of losing the food assistance they rely on to feed their families. It would impose new work requirements on adults ages 55–64, a change that could force thousands of older Chicagoans—many of whom are already struggling to find work—off SNAP and into food insecurity. Local food pantries like Irving Park Community Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels Chicago are already stretched thin; these cuts would mean more of our neighbors going hungry, and more pressure on nonprofits that are already struggling to keep up with rising demand.

    The bill also slashes nearly $700 billion from Medicaid, jeopardizing health coverage for more than 300,000 Illinois residents, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 10.9 million Americans would lose health insurance coverage under this bill, with low-income and working-class families bearing the brunt of these cuts.

    Meanwhile, this bill delivers massive new tax breaks to the wealthiest households and corporations, while adding $2.8 trillion to the national debt. The increase in the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap overwhelmingly benefits the top 5% of earners, while ordinary Chicagoans see their benefits slashed and their cost of living rise.

    In Chicago, where nearly one in five households relies on SNAP and more than 40% of children are covered by Medicaid, the impact of this bill would be devastating. Families will face impossible choices between paying for food, medicine, and rent. Our city’s most vulnerable—children, seniors, people with disabilities—will be left to fend for themselves.

    I urge my colleagues in the House to reject this cruel and shortsighted legislation. Chicagoans deserve better than a bill that takes from those with the least to give to those with the most. I will stand with our families, our seniors, and our children—and I will do everything in my power to ensure this bill never becomes law.”

    Congressman Jackson is also seeking cosponsors for the following amendments to the “One Big Ugly Bill” to protect families from its most damaging provisions:

    • Amendment to strike Section 10102, which expands SNAP work requirements to seniors ages 55 to 65.

    • Amendment to strike Section 10107, which would eliminate funding for all SNAP-Ed (SNAP Education) programs.

    “These amendments are essential to safeguard our seniors from punitive work requirements and to preserve vital nutrition education programs that help families make healthy choices,” said Jackson. “I call on my colleagues to join me in defending the basic dignity and well-being of our constituents.”

    “The FBI deserves a headquarters that meets their security and mission needs – and following an extensive, thorough, and transparent process, Greenbelt, Maryland, was selected as the site that best meets those requirements. Not only was this decision final, the Congress appropriated funds specifically for the purpose of the new, consolidated campus to be built in Maryland. Now the Administration is attempting to redirect those funds – both undermining Congressional intent and dealing a blow to the men and women of the FBI – since we know that a headquarters located within the District would not satisfy their security needs. Simply moving down the street would ignore the real threats the Bureau faces and further jeopardize the safety of those protecting our communities. That’s why we will be fighting back against this proposal with every tool we have.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Young Kim, Bipartisan Colleagues Condemn Violent LA Riots, Stand with Law Enforcement and Peaceful Protestors

    Washington, DC – Today, the House voted to pass H.Res.516, led by U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-40), to condemn the violent riots in Los Angeles earlier this month and commend law enforcement for their bravery. 

    The resolution expresses that the House of Representatives: 

    • Recognizes the right to assemble and protest peacefully;  
    • Condemns unequivocally the violence perpetrated against Federal, State, and local law enforcement;  
    • Calls on local and State elected leadership to work with the Federal government to end the violent riots and restore peace; and   
    • Expresses gratitude to law enforcement officers for keeping our communities safe in the face of danger.

    “Peaceful protests are a constitutional right, but vandalism, looting, violence, and other crimes are not. Condemning violence and protecting public safety shouldn’t be controversial, which is why I am leading the California Republican delegation in a resolution to support law and order as our communities see unrest enabled by California’s soft-on-crime policies,” said Congresswoman Young Kim. “I thank our law enforcement on the ground and hope we can come together to stop riots in our communities, lower the temperature, and keep our neighborhoods safe.” 

    “As unrest continues in our communities, residents shouldn’t be living in fear, and ICE’s immigration efforts should be focused on finding illegal immigrants with criminal records and removing them from our community,” Congresswoman Kim continued.

    “What happened in Los Angeles wasn’t a protest, it was a riot, plain and simple. ICE agents were attempting to do their jobs and enforce the law. They were met with violent mobs encouraged by politicians who’ve spent years urging people to resist law enforcement,” said Rep. LaMalfa. “Cars were burned, businesses looted, American flags were torn down, and officers were attacked by hoards waiving foreign flags; all while local officials were silent instead of backing them. Law and order are still a public priority. I’m glad the House stood up to condemn the chaos and back those who fought to restore order.” 

    “The First Amendment right to peacefully protest is fundamental, but the violence and vandalism that occurred in Los Angeles went far beyond free speech,” said Congressman Valadao. “This resolution reaffirms our commitment to standing with law and order, and I’m happy to see common sense win.” 

    “The violence that unfolded in Los Angeles was unacceptable. While peaceful protest is a cornerstone of our democracy, targeting law enforcement, destroying property, and endangering innocent lives clearly crosses the line,” said Congressman Obernolte. “I was proud to cosponsor and vote for this resolution to make it clear: we stand with the officers who put themselves in harm’s way to restore order, and we must hold accountable those who incite chaos.     WASHINGTON, D.C.— Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (CO-04) successfully passed H.R. 131, the “Finish the Arkansas Valley Conduit” Act, through the House Natural Resources Committee this morning. The bill eliminates interest payments on construction costs endured by non-federal entities and extends the repayment period to 75 years, allowing local communities more flexibility to finish their investments in this critical project. Congressman Jeff Hurd (CO-03) is a cosponsor of the bill, while Colorado Senator Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper have introduced companion legislation in the U.S. Senate.

    Upon completion, the Arkansas Valley Conduit would provide access to clean water to 50,000 residents in Southeast Colorado, including Bent, Prowers, Kiowa and Baca Counties. The project was originally started back in 1962 and has been delayed by bureaucracy and, most recently, rising construction and labor costs. The “Finish the AVC” Act addresses these issues in an effort to make this long-standing vision a finished product.

    WASHINGTON, D.C.— Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (CO-04) successfully passed H.R. 131, the “Finish the Arkansas Valley Conduit” Act, through the House Natural Resources Committee this morning. The bill eliminates interest payments on construction costs endured by non-federal entities and extends the repayment period to 75 years, allowing local communities more flexibility to finish their investments in this critical project. Congressman Jeff Hurd (CO-03) is a cosponsor of the bill, while Colorado Senator Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper have introduced companion legislation in the U.S. Senate.

    Upon completion, the Arkansas Valley Conduit would provide access to clean water to 50,000 residents in Southeast Colorado, including Bent, Prowers, Kiowa and Baca Counties. The project was originally started back in 1962 and has been delayed by bureaucracy and, most recently, rising construction and labor costs. The “Finish the AVC” Act addresses these issues in an effort to make this long-standing vision a finished product.

    I believe in supporting working families. That’s why I am voting NO on Republicans’ big, ugly bill that would gut health care, food assistance, and basic needs programs that everyday Americans rely on. It is a handout to billionaires at the expense of middle-class and working families. 

    According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, Trump’s budget would:

    • Cause 17 million Americans to lose their health coverage, including seniors, children, and people with disabilities.
    • Make the deepest cuts to food assistance in our nation’s history, stripping SNAP benefits and putting millions of children at risk of losing their school lunches. 
    • Gut federal programs that support wind and solar power, which could increase utility bills while reversing our nation’s progress on deploying clean energy and fighting the climate crisis.
    • Add $4 TRILLION to the national debt, which threatens our economic stability and could drive up inflation. Our kids and grandkids are going to be paying for this utterly irresponsible Republican budget.

    For months, my Democratic colleagues and I have been fighting these harmful policies. When Republicans first brought their budget to the House floor in February, I went straight from my hospital bed post-surgery to the airport to fly to DC and vote no on this disastrous proposal.     Merkley, Salinas Led Charge to Stop Elimination of Key Program for Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership

    Washington, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley and U.S. Representative Andrea Salinas (OR-06) announced today, alongside the Oregon delegation—Senator Ron Wyden and Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Val Hoyle (OR-04), Maxine Dexter (OR-03), and Janelle Bynum (OR-05)—that $2,217,708 is heading to the Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership (OMEP), which ensures the program can continue to support local manufacturers across the state.

    The federal funding comes from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a part of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) program, which is essential to support public-private manufacturing partnerships. This collaboration is vital to help small-and medium-sized manufacturers grow by streamlining operations, develop new products and customers, expand and diversify markets, adopt new technology, and enhance value within supply chains while reducing their risk. In 2024 alone, the MEP program saved Oregon manufacturers $24 million and allowed them to create or retain 1,400 jobs across the state.

    When the Trump Administration moved to eliminate the MEP program earlier this year, Salinas led the Oregon delegation in condemning the decision and urgently pressed U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to change course. Earlier in June, Merkley joined OMEP to hear directly from Oregon companies about how OMEP helps manufacturers grow and innovate. In a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, Merkley doubled down on urging Secretary Lutnick to support Oregon and American manufacturers by continuing the MEP program. This sustained pressure from Merkley, Salinas, and the Oregon delegation caused the Commerce Department to reverse the elimination of the MEP program and release initial critical federal funding needed to support American manufacturing.

     “Let the protection of the MEP program be a lesson—standing up for the federal funding serving our communities is effective and imperative,” Merkley said. “It’s clear that when Oregon’s manufacturing industry does well, all Oregonians benefit. The release of this federal funding means the Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership can continue to provide local manufacturers with the support they need to grow, stay competitive in the global marketplace, and keep the engine of our economy going strong.”

    • Closes loopholes for refugee parole: It prohibits parole of refugees into the United States outside of the established refugee admission process, preventing the administration from using broad parole authority to bypass standard vetting and security protocols.
    • Targets national security threats in immigration law: The bill ensures that individuals with ties to terrorism, espionage, or foreign criminal networks are flagged and blocked from entering the U.S., reinforcing existing inadmissibility standards with clear statutory guardrails.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, a provision selling millions of acres of public lands was removed from the Senate Reconciliation Bill, also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” Congressman Zinke had expressed unequivocal opposition to the provision and joined five of his House colleagues in sending a letter to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson stating, “If a provision to sell public lands is in the bill that reaches the House floor, we will be forced to vote no.”

     Congressman Ryan Zinke issued the following statement in response to the removal of the provision:

     TR would be proud. Bully! We defended our San Juan Hill, and we won.

     The SEALs taught me to Never Quit and to always rely on my teammates. Both were keys to our public lands victory. We always had backup plans, and we had the greatest coalition of support I’ve seen. Public lands are not red or blue, they are red, white and blue. They belong to all of us whether we’re from Massachusetts or Montana.

     I greatly appreciate the work of my colleagues in the House and Senate who were leaders either publicly or behind closed doors, particularly Senators Sheehy, Daines, Crapo, Risch, Chairman Simpson, and Speaker Johnson.     Washington, D.C. – Today, Western Montana Congressman Ryan Zinke announced that the Montana Department of Labor and Industry has been awarded $4 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Labor’s State Apprenticeship Expansion Formula Round 3 (SAFE3) grant program. The grant will support the expansion of Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) across the state, helping Montanans train for high paying, in demand skilled jobs.

     The U.S. Department of Labor awarded nearly $84 million to 50 states and territories as part of the SAFE3 initiative.     NEW YORK, N.Y. — Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today hosted a roundtable with seven young people whose lives and communities have been impacted by gun violence and who have become passionate advocates for change. The participants shared their experiences with gun violence in New York City and discussed the policies they hope to see championed in the fight to end gun violence.  

    “The gun violence epidemic is uniquely American and entirely preventable with commonsense gun regulations and resourced community-based prevention and intervention organizations,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “The brave young people who shared their stories with me today can help us tackle the root causes of this epidemic. While Trump and the GOP continue to roll back gun safety regulations and grants, we must aggressively push to invest in the grassroots efforts already making a difference on the ground.”

More than 17,000 children are shot each year, with over 4,000 young Americans dying tragic and preventable deaths.  Communities of color are particularly impacted by gun violence. Black children and teens are 20 times more likely to die in a gun-related homicide than their white peers.  

    Young people exposed to gun violence often suffer long-lasting physical, psychological, and emotional trauma. These experiences increase the risk of substance abuse, mental health disorders, and even the perpetuation of violent behavior, creating a tragic cycle of violence that affects future generations. The economic toll of these cycles is staggering, with youth violence costing an estimated $122 billion each year in medical expenses, lost employment opportunities, and diminished quality of life due to injury. 

    Evidence-based, community-driven programs have had great success in curbing violence at the local level. For example, Chicago’s Youth Violence Prevention Center reduced local homicides by 17% in one year, even as the city’s overall homicide rate increased. 

    As a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Congressman Goldman has been a leading advocate in the fight against gun violence.  

    This month, Congressman Goldman jointly introduced the ‘Firearm Destruction Licensure Act’ alongside Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA). This legislation would close a gun loophole that is allowing firearms designated for destruction to be sold back into American communities and potentially into the hands of bad actors.

    Background

    Instability in the Western Hemisphere affects not just South Florida, it threatens America’s national security. In Honduras, the Zelaya family first came to power in 2006 when ex-president Manuel Zelaya won the elections. He spent three years pushing a socialist agenda until 2009, when the military removed him after he attempted to change the constitution to stay in power. His wife, Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, has served as president since 2022 and has worked to align Honduras with authoritarian regimes like Venezuela and Nicaragua. Numerous issues with the March 2025 primary elections raised questions about the legitimacy of the results.

    WILLIAMSTON, N.C.—Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) announced new legislation to support reopening facilities like Martin General Hospital as Rural Emergency Hospitals.

    The Rural Emergency Hospital Financial Stability Act, announced during a press conference outside Martin General Hospital, would provide support to healthcare facilities that are facing closure or are able to reopen by increasing Medicaid reimbursements for Rural Emergency Hospitals (REH) to the outpatient hospital, rather than the rural health clinic rate. By categorizing REHs as hospitals with respect to Medicaid, as Congress originally intended, rather than clinics, the legislation categorizes REHs in the same way as Medicare.

    Without providing this financial stability, REHs would face long-term insolvency, particularly in communities like Martin County, where Medicaid reimbursements represent the highest share of their total revenue. The legislation will also reduce Medicaid expenditures because patients will no longer have to always travel long distances to seek care at inpatient facilities like ECU Health in Greenville, and could instead receive outpatient services at a reopened Martin General.

Vince Fong (CA-20), Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), and Tom McClintock (CA-05) to applaud the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) decision to rescind the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) and BLM.

    “Rescinding CalGem’s memorandum of understanding with BLM is a critical step toward restoring domestic oil production in the Central Valley,” said Congressman Valadao. “Kern County alone has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in local revenue and thousands of good-paying jobs because Sacramento bureaucrats refuse to issue permits in a timely and transparent way.     “Under Governor Newsom, California has waged a war on oil production, hurting the economy in Kern County and threatening our ability to have affordable and reliable energy,” said Congressman LaMalfa. “Under the 2012 MOU between CalGEM and BLM, the state has been able to obstruct oil and gas production on Federal lands. This is completely unacceptable. Luckily, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum understands how this MOU is an obstacle to achieving energy dominance. I want to thank him for rescinding this MOU and allowing California’s oil and gas business to operate on Federal lands without interference from Governor Newsom.”

    Background:

    Oil production on federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plays a key role in California’s energy supply. While BLM continues to approve new drilling permits, CalGem now insists on a second, state-level permitting process, even though federal law does not give them authority over federal land. Over the last 15 years, BLM has gradually allowed CalGem to delay and influence permits through informal agreements—not through official law or policy change. This was accomplished through informal practices and agreements, not through statutory changes. As a result, more than 100 BLM-approved permits are now stuck, waiting for unnecessary approval from CalGEM.

    Background:

    On June 22, 2025, President Trump authorized a precision strike at three Iranian nuclear sites to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran. Executed by 14 American pilots flying seven B-2 bombers out of Whiteman AFB, and supported by over 125 U.S. aircraft, including dozens of aerial refueling tankers, a guided missile submarine, and approximately 75 precision-guided munitions, the strike successfully targeted critical Iranian nuclear infrastructure at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. In keeping with longstanding tradition, Congress has the authority to establish a commemorative service medal to honor service members for their contributions to military operations.

    The Iranian Campaign Medal Act authorizes the creation and award of a United States military decoration to service members who served in Iran in direct support of Operation Midnight Hammer, as well as any additional operations or periods the Secretary of Defense may designate.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20) and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25) led 29 of their colleagues in urging the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS) to assess and address the harmful impacts potential cuts to Medicaid and SNAP would have on students’ access to free and reduced-price school meals.

    In a letter to USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.,Congresswomen Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25) expressed concern that proposed cuts in the current reconciliation bill could strip SNAP benefits from over 2 million children and jeopardize their Medicaid coverage—putting access to school meals at risk.

    The letter highlights the importance of direct certification and the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which allows high-need schools to offer free meals to all students. Changes to Medicaid and SNAP could disqualify many schools—particularly in communities like Broward County, Florida—from meeting CEP thresholds, reversing hard-fought progress made under the previous Administration.

    Washington, D.C.– Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on their first appropriations bill, H.R. 3944, the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. This legislation includes $452.64 billion for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and $18 billion for military construction and family housing, an increase over FY25 funding levels. This is the first of the twelve appropriations bills to be considered on the House floor and the Appropriations committee continues working to pass the remaining bills out of committee for floor consideration

    Rocky Mount, N.C. – On Wednesday, June 18, Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) hosted a Service Academy Dinner at his Rocky Mount district office. The event celebrated a group of exceptional young high school graduates from eastern North Carolina who received appointments to the United States Military Service Academies.

    The dinner highlighted the achievements of each appointee and recognized the rigorous process required for nomination and acceptance into the academies. 

    Abel Dees of Nash County and Parker Stokes of Pitt County, appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, were honored for their academic excellence, high GPAs and test scores, and strong leadership in student government and athletics. Leonardo Fletcher-Fontana of Pitt County will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy. He was recognized for his JROTC leadership and dedication to mental health advocacy and community service. Nicholas Antonio Santiago of Perquimans County, appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy, was celebrated for achievements in academics, athletics, the arts, and volunteerism, including service as a part-time firefighter. Dylan Sawyer of Pitt County, also appointed to the Naval Academy, was acknowledged in absentia for academic distinction at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and his involvement in STEM, leadership programs, and youth engagement.

    The evening concluded with a message of gratitude from the Congressman to the families and communities supporting these students.

    “Behind every appointee is a circle of support: parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors, who have helped them reach this point,” said Congressman Davis. “We all know these students will go on to do wonderful things in the future.” 

    Congressman Davis can nominate students to four U.S. service academies: West Point, Naval, Air Force, and Merchant Marine; the Coast Guard Academy does not require a nomination.
