Specialists from the Rosneft Research Institute in Ufa have improved the search for promising zones of oil source rocks in Western Siberia. The new approach allows identifying the most priority areas for drilling in the complex geological conditions typical of the Bazhenov Formation*.
The specialists analyzed an extended set of geological and petrophysical parameters and well test results at 20 RN-Yuganskneftegaz fields (the Company’s key production asset). The use of the new method allowed them to calculate the actual oil flow rate with a probability of over 75%. Previously known methods did not allow for such a high-precision forecast.
Based on the improved methodology, a prospect map was constructed using the corporate software package “RN-GEOSIM”. This allowed us to evaluate the best zones of the Bazhenov formation in terms of oil production. The methodology has already been confirmed by tests. In an area previously considered unpromising, an oil flow rate of more than 20 tons/day was obtained from a directional well.
*The Bazhenov Formation is an oil source rock distributed throughout the entire territory of Western Siberia with an area of approximately 1 million square meters and significant oil resources.
