LHASA, June 2 (Xinhua) — Three people were killed, two were injured and seven are missing after a landslide occurred in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Sunday evening, local authorities said Monday.
The landslide occurred at around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday in Muta Township, Dengchen County, Chamdo City.
The condition of the victims is stable and they were taken to hospital.
The search and rescue operation involves about 500 rescuers, medical workers and firefighters, as well as sniffer dogs. The work is being carried out with the support of ambulance crews, excavators, as well as telecommunications and power supply facilities.
The Chamdo City Government has allocated 5 million yuan (about 696,000 US dollars) to provide emergency aid to those affected by the disaster.
According to experts from the water management and natural resources departments, the volume of landslides was about 200 thousand cubic meters, and a risk of a repeat landslide was identified.
China’s Ministry of Emergency Management has issued a Level 4 disaster response alert and dispatched a task force to assist local rescue teams. –0–
