BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) — The Beijing Meteorological Observatory on Monday raised its heat alert to orange, the second-highest level, predicting temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius.

According to weather forecasters, the maximum air temperature in most areas of the flat part of the city is expected to reach about 38 degrees Celsius between 12:00 and 18:00 on Monday and Tuesday.

Meteorologists advise the population to limit outdoor activity during periods of extreme heat and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun while the “orange” warning is in effect.

The Chinese capital was under a yellow heat alert on Friday. As of 3:40 p.m. Saturday, the temperature at Beijing’s southern observatory had reached 38.1 degrees Celsius, the hottest day so far this year.

China has a three-tiered temperature warning system, with red representing the highest level of danger, followed by orange and yellow. -0-
