BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) — China’s first-instance courts heard 9,343 drug-related cases from January to May 2025, down 29.31 percent year on year, the Supreme People’s Court of China said Monday. The court noted that the number of such crimes has been declining for nearly 10 years, indicating an improvement in the overall drug situation in the country.

In 2024, China’s first-instance courts handled 35,859 drug-related cases, and sentences were issued against 49,177 defendants, of whom 8,332 were sentenced to imprisonment for 5 years or more.

The problem of crime in the sphere of new types of drugs is becoming increasingly urgent at present, the Supreme Court stated. The number of such cases is growing faster than the number of traditional drug crimes. In addition, they are characterized by a higher proportion of young people among drug addicts and criminals.

China’s people’s courts have taken a tough stance on drug crimes, with particularly harsh punishments for crimes in which minors are the main targets or minors are used to commit criminal activities, the Supreme People’s Court said. -0-
