SANAA, June 21 (Xinhua) — Yemen’s Houthi rebel movement said in a statement on Saturday that it would attack American ships if the United States launched military action against Iran.
“If America takes part in the attack and aggression against Iran … the armed forces /of the Houthis/ will attack American ships and military vessels in the Red Sea,” warned the official representative of the Houthi armed groups, Yahya Saria, on the air of the Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah TV channel.
“We are monitoring and controlling all movements in the region … and we will take the necessary measures,” he said, adding: “We support Iran … We will not allow America and its criminal entity to implement its plans in the region.”
US President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that he had given Iran a maximum of two weeks to return to the negotiating table on its nuclear program.
Last week, Israel launched a campaign of airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities and senior Iranian leaders, destroying several infrastructure sites and killing dozens of Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes against various targets in the Jewish state.
The Houthi movement, which controls much of northern Yemen, began shelling Israel in November 2023, weeks after the war between Israel and Hamas began in the Gaza Strip, in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians. –0–
