  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Action being taken on water issue

    Source: Hong Kong Information Services

Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn said today the Water Supplies Department (WSD) will replace an upstream section of water pipe in response to water incidents at Queen’s Hill Estate and Shan Lai Court in Fanling, with work commencing this year.

Ms Linn made the announcement after visiting an upstream location in the water supply network for the two places with Director of Water Supplies Roger Wong and an expert group comprising three experts from the Drinking Water Safety Advisory Committee (DWSAC).

They were there to inspect a screen filter and learn about the planned work at the location.

The Government briefed the expert group on its assessment that a section of steel pipe with bitumen protective coating on its inner wall, at Ping Che Road, is believed to be the source of sediment in the water at Queen’s Hill Estate and Shan Lai Court. The section is about 400 metres long and 600 millimetres in diameter.

The expert group considered the assessment reasonable.

Ms Linn said the WSD will use advanced technologies, including robots, to assess the condition of the bitumen coating inside the pipe, to further ascertain the specific cause of the sediment.

An investigation report will be submitted to the DWSAC for review within two weeks.

Ms Linn added that the WSD will replace the 400m-long section of pipe and that the works will commence within this year.

At present, non-bitumen protective coating is used on the inner wall of over 90% of water piping in Hong Kong.

On the 700 kilometres of water pipes with bitumen protective coating, the WSD has installed over 1,000 screen filters at suitable locations.

Ms Linn said the WSD will review whether it is necessary to install extra screen filters at other locations. The WSD will also formulate a longer-term plan for the replacement of water pipes and will submit a proposal to the Development Bureau for review.

Under the supervision of Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong, policy bureaus and departments have commenced work to follow up on four directives put forward by the Chief Executive after a high-level steering meeting yesterday.

The WSD has increased the frequency of water testing at the two locations in Fanling, with water samples being collected daily from water tanks at Queen’s Hill Estate, which comprises seven buildings, a community centre and a shopping mall, and all six buildings at Shan Lai Court.

The results are being released daily on the WSD’s website, and posted in the lobbies of each building at Queen’s Hill Estate and Shan Lai Court.

To ensure residents can feel at ease when consuming water, the WSD will also continue to arrange for water tanks at the estates to provide a temporary water supply.

In addition, the WSD will promptly address any inquiries received via its 24-hour hotline, on 2824 5000.

Furthermore, the Housing Department (HD) will again thoroughly clean the water tanks in every building at Queen’s Hill Estate and Shan Lai Court within the next seven days.

The HD has installed a total of 22 high-efficiency filtration devices at the ground-level water inlets of all 13 buildings. These devices will be inspected twice daily to ensure proper operation. The expenses for these measures will be fully borne by the Government.

Residents who observe any issues with water quality can call their management office, which will follow up on the call and conduct on-site inspections.

The Home & Youth Affairs Bureau and the Home Affairs Department will gather District Council members, members of the North District’s “three district committees”, and the six sub-teams of the North District Care Teams, to conduct home visits today and tomorrow.

The teams reached over 850 households during today’s visit, with the majority of these reporting that water quality has substantially improved.

In addition, three street booths will be set up at key locations in Queen’s Hill Estate and Shan Lai Court to give residents updates and practical information, and to register cases for assistance.

…THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN THE SOUTHEAST
    TO THE UPPER OH VALLEY…

    …SUMMARY…
Scattered damaging winds, a couple tornadoes, and isolated severe
hail are possible across the Southeast into the Upper Ohio Valley on
    Monday into Monday evening.

    …Southeast…
Below-average confidence exists for this forecast with large spread
across D2 guidance in the handling of an early-morning MCS and
attendant MCV in the MS vicinity, amid modest background wind fields
outside of the MCV influence. Most guidance indicates convection
should intensify towards midday, along and downstream of the
large-scale outflow as the boundary layer destabilizes across the
Deep South. Some guidance indicates convection may redevelop behind
it and become the primary corridor for damaging winds during the
afternoon. For now, have maintained a broad level 2-SLGT risk for
scattered damaging winds to the South Atlantic Coast.

    …Upper OH Valley…
A belt of strong mid-level southwesterlies ahead of an upper Great
Lakes vertically stacked cyclone should generally remain along to
the cool side of a weak cold front shifting east. Most guidance has
trended up with the degree of boundary-layer heating ahead of the
front, which will be required to boost buoyancy amid marginal
mid-level lapse rates. A corridor of primarily scattered damaging
winds, along with a tornado and isolated severe hail, may develop
amid modest MLCAPE of 500-1500 J/kg. With a confined buoyancy plume,
convection should weaken as it spreads towards the northern
    Appalachians on Monday evening.

    …NM/TX…
An intense and large MCS on Sunday should drive a composite
outflow/cold front into central/south TX, with a meridional arc over
central to western NM. Scattered to numerous afternoon storms will
probably remain tied to the higher terrain of northern/central NM
with an isolated severe hail/wind threat amid marginal deep-layer
shear. Isolated storms are also possible near the front from the
southern Trans-Pecos through southeast TX with a severe hail/wind
threat. Isolated elevated convection may form with weak low-level
warm theta-e advection north of the front on Monday evening/night.
Sufficient effective bulk shear and elevated buoyancy may exist for
a few storms capable of severe hail.

…THERE IS A MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PORTIONS
OF SOUTHERN OKLAHOMA INTO NORTHERN TEXAS…

…THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS SEPARATELY ALONG
    THE EAST COAST…

    …SUMMARY…
A severe weather outbreak is possible across the southern Plains
today. A few tornadoes, destructive wind gusts of 80-100 mph, and
giant hail up to 5 inches in diameter are likely. Strong gusts, and
perhaps a couple of tornadoes, are also possible along portions of
    the East Coast.

    …Synopsis…

***A severe weather outbreak is possible across the southern Plains
    today***

A broad mid-level trough will deepen across the Great Lakes into the
OH Valley, with multiple embedded mid-level impulses poised to pivot
around the upper trough across the southern Plains to the Southeast
and Atlantic Seaboard today. A broad northwesterly upper-flow regime
will become established across the Plains States into the MS Valley,
with modest mid-level flow contributing to strong deep-layer shear.
Beneath this stronger flow/shear and cold temperatures aloft will be
rich low-level moisture, which will support extreme instability,
especially in the southern Plains. Here, a volatile setup for severe
weather will exist. All severe hazards are expected, with
destructive wind gusts and giant hail likely. The severe threat
should persist to some degree into the Lower MS Valley after dark. A
severe risk will also accompany storms along parts of the East
Coast, as passing mid-level impulses provide enough lift and shear
    atop a moist, unstable airmass.

…Southern Plains into the Lower MS Valley…
A diffuse baroclinic zone will be positioned across the TX
Panhandle, southeast into central or southern OK at the start of the
period. It is unclear how prolific convection will be during the
morning to early afternoon. Latest high-resolution model guidance
consensus suggests that these storms should not be overly intense,
nor should their impact on the free warm sector be overly
detrimental. Assuming this is the case, strong daytime heating, amid
some high level cirrus clouds, should support surface temperatures
reaching 90 F amid mid 70s F dewpoints. Given robust boundary layer
heating of this moisture beneath 8-9 C/km mid-level lapse rates,
widespread extreme buoyancy should develop by afternoon. Forecast
soundings show deep, wide CAPE profiles, with over 5000 J/kg MLCAPE
possible (perhaps locally higher in spots). At the same time, modest
veering with height in the lowest few hundred mb, and northwesterly
flow in the 500-200 mb increasing to 50-70 kts, will promote 50+ kts
of effective bulk shear (elongated hodographs with small low-level
    curvature).

A quasi-stationary cold front will be draped somewhere along the
KS/OK border into MO, with a dryline positioned in far western TX
during the afternoon. With maximum daytime heating and minimal
MLCINH, robust convective initiation is expected along these
boundaries around mid-afternoon. Given the extreme buoyancy/shear
parameter space, the more isolated, discrete storms should quickly
become intense supercells capable of a few tornadoes, severe gusts
(perhaps exceeding 75 mph), and large hail. 2+ inch diameter hail
should become commonplace if multiple supercells can sustain
themselves, with giant hail (perhaps over 5 inches in diameter)
possible. Though much more conditional, an intense tornado could
develop somewhere in the eastern TX Panhandle if a longer-lived,
inflow-dominant supercell manages to materialize and optimally
ingest the extreme buoyancy while also traversing the diffuse
baroclinic boundary. However, confidence in this scenario is too low
for the introduction of higher tornado probabilities at this time.

At some point during the afternoon early evening, supercell cold
pool mergers should support the development of either one intense
MCS (perhaps in the form of a bow echo), or multiple small but
intense bowing segments. Should a bow echo form, widespread severe
winds are likely. In either scenario, gust magnitudes may
potentially reaching 80-100 mph, hence the maintenance of a Category
4/Moderate Risk. An MCS should progress toward the lower MS Valley
during the evening into the overnight, with a lingering severe wind
threat that should gradually subside with time.

    …Portions of the Mid Atlantic…
By early afternoon, thunderstorms should increase in both coverage
and intensity ahead of a weak surface low and associated weak
mid-level impulse. These storms will move into an airmass
characterized by mid to upper 70s F temperatures and 70 F dewpoints,
overspread by modest mid-level lapse rates (resulting in over 1500
J/kg MLCAPE). Considerable veering with height will support
elongated hodographs with appreciable low-level curvature, with
multicells and supercells the expected storm mode. Damaging gusts
and large hail may accompany the stronger storms. A few tornadoes
may occur with any supercells that interact with a baroclinic
    boundary across eastern VA.

…Portions of the Southeast Atlantic Coastline…
From mid morning to early afternoon, diurnal heating of a moist,
weakly capped boundary layer will result in surface temperatures
reaching 90 F amid 70 F surface dewpoints, with MLCAPE exceeding
2000 J/kg in spots. Overall deep-layer flow/shear should be modest
at best, with forecast soundings showing predominantly short
hodographs. Given the moderate to strong instability in place,
multicells are the expected mode of convection. While some hail
cannot be ruled out with the stronger storms (given modest mid-level
lapse rates), the main threat with these storms should be strong
    wind gusts.

  • Nari Shakti: A decade of women’s empowerment under Modi government

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Over the past 11 years, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has witnessed a transformative shift in women’s empowerment, redefining their role from passive beneficiaries to active nation-builders. With women and children comprising 67.7% of India’s population, the Modi government has made Nari Shakti(women’s power) a cornerstone of national progress, driving policies that empower women across health, education, housing, sanitation, financial inclusion, and leadership. As India strides into Amrit Kaal, women are leading the charge toward a stronger, more inclusive nation.

    A Lifecycle Approach to Empowerment

“Women are not just homemakers; they are nation-builders,” Prime Minister Modi has repeatedly emphasized. Since 2014, the government has adopted a comprehensive, lifecycle-based approach to empower women at every stage of life. From landmark legislation like the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which reserves 33% of seats in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies for women, to schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Mission Shakti, the focus has shifted from women’s development to women-led development. These initiatives have boosted women’s participation in education (especially STEM), entrepreneurship, public service, and even defense, fostering inclusive and sustainable growth.

Health and Nutrition: Building a Strong Foundation

The government’s fight against malnutrition has gained momentum through Mission POSHAN 2.0, a ₹1.81 lakh crore initiative (2021–26) targeting children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. By integrating nutrition, health, and community efforts, POSHAN Abhiyaan (launched in 2018) uses digital tools like the Poshan Tracker—winner of the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2024—to drive real-time monitoring and behavioral change. As of March 2025, 99.02% of beneficiaries are Aadhaar-verified, and a face authentication module ensures transparency in distributing Take-Home Rations.

Under Mission Saksham Anganwadi, 24,533 Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) have been upgraded into Saksham Anganwadis, with a target of transforming 2 lakh AWCs by 2026. The Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi initiative has trained 36,463 State-Level Master Trainers and 4,65,719 Anganwadi workers to provide quality pre-school education alongside nutrition. The Suposhit Gram Panchayat Abhiyaan, launched in December 2024, rewards 1,000 Gram Panchayats for exemplary work in improving nutrition outcomes.

Maternal and neonatal care has also seen significant advancements. The Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) has supported over 16.60 crore beneficiaries since 2014, reducing out-of-pocket expenses for antenatal and postnatal care. The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) has aided 11.07 crore women by promoting institutional deliveries, while Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan (SUMAN) ensures zero-cost healthcare for pregnant women and newborns in 90,015 certified facilities. The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) provides ₹5,000 cash benefits to support maternal health, and the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) ensures early detection of high-risk pregnancies.

    Dignity Through Infrastructure

The Modi government has prioritized dignity in daily life through transformative schemes. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) has provided homes to 2.75 crore beneficiaries, with 73% being women, granting them security and decision-making power. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has distributed 10.33 crore LPG connections, freeing women from hazardous cooking fumes. The Swachh Bharat Mission has built over 12 crore toilets, ensuring safety and hygiene for women, with 93% reporting reduced fear of harm or infection. The Jal Jeevan Mission has delivered 15.6 crore tap water connections, empowering women by saving time and involving them in water management.

    Education and Financial Security

The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign has improved the sex ratio at birth from 918 (2014–15) to 930 (2023–24) and increased girls’ school enrollment to 78% by 2023–24. The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), celebrating a decade in 2025, has opened over 4.2 crore accounts, securing the financial future of girls.

    Women in Leadership

Women are breaking barriers across sectors. The first batch of female cadets graduated from the National Defence Academy in May 2025, and women have played pivotal roles in missions like Chandrayaan-3. India leads globally in female STEM graduates and pilots. Legal reforms such as the abolition of Triple Talaq, the proposal to raise the minimum marriage age for women from 18 to 21 years, and the extension of maternity leave to 26 weeks have significantly advanced women’s empowerment in India. These measures have supported greater access to education and employment for women, while also promoting their health and well-being. Additionally, the abrogation of Article 35A has granted women in Jammu & Kashmir equal property rights, further strengthening gender equality in the region.

    Economic Empowerment

The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) has sanctioned ₹34.11 lakh crore across 52.5 crore loan accounts, with 68% benefiting women entrepreneurs. The Stand-Up India Scheme has provided over ₹47,704 crore to 2.04 lakh women borrowers. The Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) has mobilized 10.05 crore women into 90.90 lakh Self-Help Groups, with the Lakhpati Didi Initiative enabling 1.48 crore women to earn ₹1 lakh annually.

    Safety and Security: Mission Shakti

Mission Shakti, with its Sambal and Samarthya pillars, ensures women’s safety and self-reliance. Sambal includes 819 operational One Stop Centres (OSCs), assisting 10.98 lakh women, and the Women Helpline, handling 214.78 lakh calls. The SHe-Box Portal addresses workplace harassment, and Nari Adalat promotes women-led justice at the grassroots. Samarthya supports 2.92 lakh women through Shakti Sadan and 5.07 lakh through Sakhi Niwas. The AbKoiBahanaNahi campaign, launched in November 2024, combats gender-based violence.

A New Era for Nari Shakti

Over the past decade, the Modi government has transformed women’s welfare into a movement of leadership and agency. From space missions to grassroots governance, Indian women are shaping the nation’s destiny.

TEHRAN, June 8 (Xinhua) — Iran on Saturday strongly condemned the new entry ban to the United States for citizens of several countries, including Iran, calling the move “a clear sign of deep-rooted hostility towards Iranians.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the US administration’s decision in a statement, saying the restrictions were aimed solely at people based on their nationality and religion, state news agency IRNA reported.

Such policies reflect discriminatory thinking and violate fundamental principles of international law, including the principles of non-discrimination and respect for human rights, the Foreign Ministry added.

The statement calls on the UN and international human rights bodies to publicly speak out against Washington’s “unilateral and discriminatory measures.”

Iran will use all available means to protect the rights of its citizens and respond to the consequences of such actions by the US administration, the statement said. -0-

BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping and Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing on Sunday exchanged congratulatory messages on the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

In his message, Xi Jinping noted that over the past 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the “paophaw” fraternal friendship between China and Myanmar has stood the test of time and become even stronger.

Adhering to the jointly upheld Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the Bandung Spirit, the two countries are committed to good-neighborliness, deepening mutually beneficial cooperation and firmly supporting each other on issues of common interest and major concerns, setting a fine example of friendly exchanges between the countries, he said.

Xi Jinping recalled his meeting with Min Aung Hlaing in Russia in May, when the two leaders reached an important consensus on building a China-Myanmar community with a shared future.

China attaches great importance to developing ties with Myanmar and is willing to work with Myanmar to seize the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties as an opportunity to accelerate high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, jointly implement the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and push forward lasting progress in building a China-Myanmar community with a shared future, so as to bring more benefits to the two peoples, Xi stressed. –0–

On World Oceans Day, kiwis across the North Island’s west coast gathered today to paddle out in opposition to seabed mining, in seven different locations.

The day started in Patea, South Taranaki at 0730 am, with a small but determined crew paddling out in freezing temperatures, including Debbie Ngawera Packer.

Many of the Patea team then drove to Ngāmotu New Plymouth’s Fitzroy Beach where hundreds were on the beach, of which 130 paddled out.

At Whaingaroa/Raglan, a 120-strong crew from te whare Ururoa introduced the day with an Arahi,  before around 50 surfers from the 300-strong crowd took to the water at Manu Bay Manu Bay.

In Pōneke Wellington the Island Bay paddle-out was thwarted by the huge swell that saw ferries cancelled, so the team gathered on the beach

In Wautakia Bay near Muriwai, a small gathering of surfers took to the water amid big swells.

Port Waikato spelt out “no” on the beach, and did the paddle-out, followed by a beach cleanup.

Marking 11 years of transformative governance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has launched a series of nationwide contests through the MyGov platform. These initiatives aim to engage citizens in celebrating India’s development journey and encourage public participation in the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).

At the heart of the campaign is the “Viksit Bharat 2025 Quiz,” designed to test participants’ knowledge about India’s progress over the past decade. The quiz not only serves to enhance public awareness but also offers significant incentives. The top winner will receive a cash prize of ₹1,00,000, while the second and third prize winners will take home ₹75,000 and ₹50,000 respectively. In addition, 100 consolation prizes of ₹2,000 and 200 prizes of ₹1,000 will be awarded. Every participant will also receive a digital certificate of participation.

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he has no intention to repair his relationship with billionaire Elon Musk and indicated their relationship is over, following their heated mutual attacks on social media.

In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump said he has no plans to speak with Musk anytime soon. “I’m too busy doing other things,” he said.

Asked if he thought his relationship with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO was over, Trump said, “I would assume so, yeah,” accusing Musk of being “disrespectful to the office of the President.”

In the interview, Trump also said there would be “serious consequences” if Musk funds Democratic candidates to run against Republicans who vote in favor of the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

“If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump said, without revealing what those consequences would be.

The feud between Trump and Musk started from the “One Big Beautiful Bill”. In the days leading up to their public falling out, Musk had been critical of the GOP-led spending bill that the House passed last month.

Trump indicated he didn’t believe that Musk’s opposition to the “One Big Beautiful Bill” is jeopardizing the bill’s chances of success, saying he’s “very confident” that the bill will pass the Senate before July 4.

MINSK, June 8 (Xinhua) — A friendly match between the youth teams of China and Belarus in Minsk on Saturday marked the official opening of the National Football Stadium built with the support of China. The opening ceremony was attended by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

As A. Lukashenko noted in his speech, the National Football Stadium will become a symbol of strong Belarusian-Chinese friendship. “We are officially opening the greatest “monument”. We are opening this grandiose structure. For Belarus, this is the greatest event. The magnificent arena, as well as the new international-level swimming pool, were designed and built by our friends from the People’s Republic of China,” the Belarusian president noted.

The head of the Belarusian state expressed gratitude to the Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, as well as all Chinese partners for the construction of the National Football Stadium, which is the largest and most modern football stadium in Belarus and was built with the support of China. “I hope that in the near future, along with friendly games, national championship matches, we will be able to host official international meetings here and enjoy the performance of the best football players in the world,” A. Lukashenko noted.

Deputy Director General of the General Administration of Physical Culture and Sports of the People’s Republic of China, Vice President of the Chinese Olympic Committee Zhang Jiasheng said that the completion of the stadium construction was not only a significant project of technical and economic Chinese-Belarusian cooperation, but also a clear indication of political trust, practical cooperation and rapprochement between the peoples of the two countries. He expressed hope that the stadium would become a platform for the dreams of the youth of China and Belarus to come true, as well as a bridge for deepening humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.

The National Football Stadium of Belarus is a key project under the Belt and Road Initiative. It is located in the industrial district of Minsk and covers an area of 12.43 hectares, with a total construction area of 48,000 square meters. The stadium is designed for 33,145 spectators and meets international standards for a professional football field, and is also a multifunctional sports and cultural complex.

The stadium’s design is dominated by white and red colors, symbolizing the cultural characteristics of Belarus and friendship with China. The facade consists of 472 curved steel slats, creating the effect of dynamic lines when the viewing angle changes. The roof is decorated with 1,860 different types of patterned glass, reflecting elements of the Belarusian flag.

The central field lawn is equipped with an intelligent turf system, combining natural grass and artificial fibers, which ensures its green appearance all year round. Automatic drainage, soil heating, ventilation and irrigation systems create optimal conditions for players.

In an interview with Xinhua, Belarusian Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk expressed deep gratitude to the Chinese people for building a stadium of the highest standards, which will allow Belarus to host international competitions. He noted that Belarusian athletes, coaches and experts highly appreciate the quality of sports facilities built with China’s support.

The general contractor for the project was Beijing Urban Construction Group. Sha Yi, head of the technical team for the project, said that the company had mobilized key resources, overcome difficulties, and ensured progress in implementing the project, contributing to the development of sports infrastructure in Belarus. “This stadium has also become an important platform for strengthening sports and cultural exchanges between the two countries,” Sha Yi noted.

In a friendly match, the youth teams of Belarus /U-21/ and China /U-22/ played to a 1:1 draw. Chinese Ambassador to Belarus Zhang Wenchuan and S. Kovalichuk presented awards to athletes from both countries. Young footballer from Belarus Arseny Skopets noted that the new stadium impressed him with its beauty and comfort. • MIL-OSI Australia: A glimpse into free school camps at Birrigai

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

Campers get to make, cook and taste their own damper.

    In brief:

    • ACT public primary school students have begun attending free school camps at Birrigai Outdoor School.
    • The ACT Government launched the free camps program in February 2025.
    • This article looks at what students experience on a Birrigai camp.

Since the ACT Government launched its free camps program in February this year, over 640 students have experienced one at Birrigai Outdoor School, near Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

Another 370 students are booked to attend their free camp by the end of Term 2, which means Birrigai will have hosted more than 1000 students from 13 schools for free camps by mid-year.

Camp is a fun and important part of schooling. But have you ever wondered what students actually get up to?

This article looks at what ACT public primary school students can expect on their free overnight camp.

    The free camps program

The free camps program gives one year group from each ACT public primary school a free overnight camp at Birrigai each year.

This ensures all ACT public primary school students attend a free camp during their primary school years.

Free camps mean all students can attend, with no one missing out due to cost.

All ACT public primary schools will have their first free camp in 2025 or 2026.

    The campers’ itinerary

Birrigai offers different programs aligned with the curriculum. Themes include:

    • First Nations culture
    • Outdoor adventure and science
    • Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities.

Outdoor activities are central to the experience. On camp, students may take part in:

    • adventure bush walks
    • team-building exercises like team treks and rope courses
    • campfires, damper cooking and seed grinding (and enjoying Birrigai biscuits)
    • challenges such as the crate climb, Vertical Playpen and Giant’s Ladder
    • a connection to Country experience with Birrigai Aboriginal rangers
    • learning about plants and living creatures, including kangaroos, emus, yabbies, Bogong moths and Muliyan (eagles)
    • arts and craft – from sketching their environment to building a shelter
    • play-based learning, storytelling and singing
    • self-directed exploration
    • collecting data as part of Birrigai’s ongoing EcoSurvey.

Programs vary due to the age and size of the group, the season and weather conditions.

    The Birrigai experience

Local parents and carers may recall their own school camps at Birrigai, which was established in 1980.

The outdoor school is surrounded by mountains, woodland and streams. It is of historical and ongoing significance to the Ngunnawal people.

Students can see archaeological sites over 25,000 years old. There’s also plenty of wildlife to spot.

Birrigai camps help students view the world differently and connect or re-connect to Country.

    Food and accommodation

Students experience the novelty of sleeping in bunk-style cabins.

These are heated and air-conditioned and have shared internal bathrooms.

There are also facilities to cater for people with additional needs.

At mealtimes, everyone eats together in Birrigai’s large dining hall.

Meals are freshly prepared by an in-house catering team. Food aligns with the National Healthy School Canteen Guidelines.

The team can accommodate specific dietary needs. Birrigai is a nut-free site.

    Ensuring equity in education

The free camps program complements other initiatives aimed at helping Canberra families with school costs. These include:

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Secretary-General’s message on World Oceans Day [scroll down for French version]

    Source: United Nations – English

he ocean covers most of our planet – and sustains all of it.

Our ocean has not only shaped cultures, stirred imaginations, and inspired wonder across the ages. It supplies the air we breathe, the food we eat, the jobs we need, and the climate we count on.

But today, the ocean needs our help. The distress signals are clear – from plastic-choked waters to collapsing fish populations and loss of marine ecosystems, from rising temperatures to rising seas.

We must sustain what sustains us.

The illusion that the ocean can absorb limitless emissions and waste must end.

We must invest massively in science, conservation, and the sustainable blue economy – and extend far greater support to coastal communities, Indigenous Peoples and Small Island Developing States already bearing the brunt of climate change.

And we must protect marine biodiversity, reject practices that inflict irreversible damage, and deliver on the promise of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement.

The United Nations Ocean Conference that begins tomorrow will be a crucial moment to advance these priorities and renew the world’s collective promise to the ocean.

I urge all governments and partners to deliver – with ambition, resources, and resolve.

    ***

  • MIL-OSI China: Why Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is a must-watch for global businesses

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

A delegation of consular corps and business communities in Hong Kong has just concluded a four-day tour of Chinese mainland cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), describing the trip as a “compulsory course” for everyone based in Hong Kong.

“The GBA, as an emerging economic brand, has been underreported in terms of its potential and opportunities,” multiple consuls general, chamber of commerce leaders, and executives of multinational firms told Xinhua, underscoring the region’s untapped potential as a “blue ocean” for innovation and the need for enhanced global promotion to unlock its full economic and strategic potential.

“These cities blend ‘sci-fi glamour’ with everyday vibrancy — stunning and unforgettable,” members of the delegation echoed this remark when commenting on their visits to Chinese mainland cities of Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Zhuhai in the GBA.

The GBA’s technological landscape is nothing short of revolutionary. Tencent’s “Digital Library Cave” in Shenzhen’s Nanshan Science Park is a prime example. By harnessing high-definition scanning, gaming-engine rendering, and dynamic lighting, Tencent has recreated an immersive and interactive experience to preserve and share the rich cultural heritage of the Mogao Grottoes.

Photo taken on June 4, 2025 shows a delegation of consular corps and business communities in Hong Kong visiting Guangzhou, south China’s Guangdong Province. (Xinhua/Wang Xinyi)

This not only breathes new life into cultural heritage but also sets a precedent for using technology in education and tourism. As Nasar S A SH Alghanim, consul general of the State of Kuwait in Hong Kong, remarked, such innovations are “transforming how we engage with history and our daily life,” highlighting the far-reaching implications for various sectors.

George Leung, CEO of SCOR Reinsurance Company (Asia) Limited., called the tour “beyond expectation,” admitting his prior focus on GBA infrastructure projects had overshadowed its cutting-edge sectors like agricultural drones and biopharmaceuticals. “This trip reshaped my understanding. We are now considering recalibrating our business strategies to align with these emerging trends,” he said.

Discussing XPeng AeroHT’s futuristic flying cars, Johannes Hack, vice chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, praised the GBA’s “determination and execution in advancing low-altitude economy,” calling its “trial-and-error, rapid-iteration model” a template for innovation. “Flying cars turn childhood dreams into reality,” he told Xinhua.

The GBA’s mainland cities exceed expectations — rich cultural heritage, vibrant talent, scenic beauty, and policy-supported industries, complemented by Hong Kong’s role as an international financial and professional services hub, said Maurits ter Kuile, consul general of the Netherlands in Hong Kong, after testing a game at a studio in Zhuhai’s Kingsoft Software Park.

Photo taken on June 5, 2025 shows a delegation of consular corps and business communities in Hong Kong visiting Guangdong Medical Valley in Nansha district, Guangzhou, south China’s Guangdong Province. (Xinhua/Wang Xinyi)

Over four days, the delegation visited cooperation zones in Hengqin, Qianhai, Nansha, and Hetao, focusing on such frontier areas as artificial intelligence (AI), smart driving, robotics, and biopharmaceuticals. Many delegates exchanged contacts, expressed investment interest, or planned follow-up visits, highlighting Hong Kong’s role as a gateway for global deals with the GBA and broader collaboration in technologies.

Brian Davidson, British consul general to Hong Kong and Macao, described the tour as an “eyeopener,” noting the region’s “boundary-breaking” drive. “Innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusivity here support staggering growth — they solve current challenges while anticipating future ones,” he said.

Philippine Consul General in Hong Kong Romulo Victor M. Israel Jr. emphasized the GBA’s ability to translate trends into impactful solutions, citing achievements in information and communications technology, biopharmaceuticals, and AI. “As a ‘future economic blue ocean,’ the GBA offers endless opportunities. I stand ready to facilitate two-way investment between the GBA and ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations),” he said.

The GBA balances visionary planning with practical implementation, said Alfred Cheng Man On, head of corporate banking at Bank Negara Indonesia’s Hong Kong branch, adding, “On-the-ground visits clarify how the GBA and Hong Kong reinforce each other, with positive ripple effects across broader regions.”

Meanwhile, delegates agreed that the journey to the GBA mainland cities revealed a region that is not only at the forefront of technological innovation but also a paragon of livability, presenting a compelling case for global investment and collaboration.

In Zhuhai, delegates admired coastal landscapes and eco-parks, with Inaki Amate, chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, comparing the city to Danang in Vietnam and Malaga in Spain.

“Similarly, GBA mainland cities offer a work-life balance that drives innovation and attracts talent,” Amate told Xinhua, noting “the GBA together as a global brand must be elevated collaboratively.”

He encouraged the Hong Kong business community to leverage its financial and legal expertise to help mainland’s GBA firms “go global,” while encouraging European investors to tap into GBA innovation sectors and support reciprocal ventures like GBA factories in Europe to boost employment and brand presence.
