  • MIL-OSI USA: Record Attendance at 30th Annual NREL Industry Growth Forum as Innovation Soars

    History was made this year at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Industry Growth Forum (IGF), and not only because it celebrated the 30th anniversary of the event. The IGF also reached a record high number for attendance: more than 1,000 people

    “Thank you all for being here for this milestone anniversary,” NREL Director Martin Keller said during his welcoming remarks. “For 30 years, this forum has brought together the energy ecosystem. You help NREL understand industry challenges, refine our research priorities to address real-world needs, and accelerate market adoption of new technologies. NREL benefits from your market insights and challenges, and you benefit from our technical expertise and research capabilities. This two-way exchange is why the IGF has thrived for 30 years.”

    Held March 26–28, 2025, at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Denver, Colorado, the event featured several new opportunities for investors, startups, and other industry professionals. The theme of the event was unlocking value, inspiring the creation of original programming aimed at leveraging the power of the IGF.

    Attendees focused on bringing innovative energy solutions to the market, including battery construction, novel ways to power buildings, and maximizing energy efficiency to lower costs. The event included new programs such as a reverse pitch session, a spotlight of companies that are part of NREL’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (IEC) portfolio, Growth Stage dialogues, resource roundtables, and more.

    “What a difference 30 years makes,” IEC Director Trish Cozart said during her opening remarks. “Since the first NREL Industry Growth Forum, we’ve increased the size of the event by tenfold, and while our computers are eight orders of magnitude more powerful than they were 30 years ago, one thing that has not changed is that the key to unlocking value in this business is people. No matter how much compute power we build, I believe 30 years from now, we will still be sitting across the table talking to each other.”

    Networking has always been at the core of IGF, and this year was no different with nearly 3,000 meetings held. The marquee event for many attendees was the one-on-one meetings between startups and investors. During this 3.5-hour session, each startup and investor had 10 minutes to talk during each prescheduled meeting before moving on to the next.

    The IGF also featured a competition where 52 different presenters pitched in front of panels of investor judges and then received questions and scores from the judges. The pitch competition awarded top ventures across several stages: Growth, Commercialization, Pre-Commercialization, and Early. Other categories awarded included Best International Venture (for the first time), People’s Choice, and Best Overall Venture.

    First-Time Attending Startup Seeks Connections

    One of those participating in the Early-Stage pitch competition was first-time IGF attendee Michael Solomentsev, co-founder and CEO of Palanquin Power. Solomentsev is also in NREL’s Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program, West Gate. Palanquin helps make data centers more efficient using advanced power electronics, and Solomentsev often describes the technology by pointing to a laptop charger.

    “With that type of device, you don’t really care if it’s 80% or 90% efficient,” Solomentsev said. “But a data center has the same need for power conversion, and each percentage point means much more power on that scale, so they have a huge premium for efficiency. Our approach enables efficiencies that no one else can achieve.”

    West Gate provides participants technical support via a two-year program at NREL, working with experts to help further develop technology. Solomentsev has about 18 months left in the program, and leading up to the IGF, he was very excited about the one-on-one meetings.

    “Meeting that many investors and who are in the particular niche I inhabit, it’s worth its weight in gold,” Solomentsev said.

    Long-Time Investor Advises Multiple Entrepreneurs

    Tim Woodward, managing director of Prelude Ventures, began coming to the IGF just after its creation in the 1990s. His firm typically funds companies before first revenue with a Seed or Series A check and continues the relationship through commercialization to scaling.

    “There really isn’t another event that happens at this scale that brings this many investors and companies together,” he said. “There isn’t an equivalent.”

    Over the years, Woodward has acted multiple times as a member of the selection committee that chooses the startups to present at the event).

    “I’ve been coming to this for almost all 30 years,” Woodward said. “From a gathering of 50 to 100 investors and startups to more than 1,000 people today, it’s really become the place to be for industry investors and startups.”

    Accelerator Looks for Technologies To Take Home

    Suzanna Caldwell, tech deployment track manager for Launch Alaska, came to the IGF seeking to expand her program’s reach. Launch Alaska, based in Anchorage, is an eight-month accelerator program for companies to develop technologies in the Alaska environment.

    “It’s always great when you find a technology and the innovators are interested in Alaska,” Caldwell said. “It’s amazing to make those connections in a place like this far from home. It’s inspiring. At the end of it, I walk away saying: ‘Wow, this is such a cool space.’”

    Several companies in the Launch Alaska portfolio came to this year’s IGF, which Caldwell thinks is an invaluable experience for both her accelerator and the innovators.

    “I don’t know of other conferences that are like this,” she said, “that bring together so much diversity in the marketplace. I’m really impressed by NREL’s ability to bring this together.”

    Startup Service Provider Keeps Coming Back Each Year

    Law firm Wilson Sonsini began sponsoring the IGF several years ago. Bob O’Connor, a partner in the law firm, said the relationship dates back to 2003, when one of the first innovative energy technology companies he represented also happened to be a spinoff that was commercializing NREL-created technology.

    “People come to the IGF in order to ascertain what’s next,” O’Connor said. “It is a bit like coming home in many respects. It’s always a great opportunity to see all the key players in the industry catching up and sharing stories, vulnerabilities, and accomplishments. I’ve always thought of NREL as quite literally the most optimistic place on earth. If you aren’t sure we as a community, or as an industry, can meet the challenges ahead of us, come to IGF. The answers are probably here!”

    O’Connor gave a keynote address on Friday, March 28, where he focused on what NREL means to the community.

    “NREL brings us optimism, and optimism requires resilience. Optimism doesn’t come cheap,” O’Connor said. “Yet, resilience is an opportunity, and that is why the community is rallying around NREL. To me, NREL is resilience.”

    New Programs Offer New Opportunities

    Solomentsev took part in several of the new programs at this year’s IGF, including the IEC Spotlight session. This invite-only event brought together investors and industry professionals for special pitches from 10 startups that came from IEC programs such as the Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator (IN2), the Shell GameChanger Powered by NREL (GCxN), West Gate, and Chevron Studio.

    The spotlight was just one of several new programs. The others included:

    • Industry Reverse Pitches: In addition to the regular pitch competition, the IGF hosted a reverse pitch session during the event. Executives with Wells Fargo, Shell, Fortescue, National Grid, Halliburton Labs, and Chevron gave short presentations about what they are looking for from startups to advance their businesses and when considering what to invest in.
    • Resource Roundtables: Hosted by service providers, these sessions included advice from lawyers, accountants, and technical analysis companies. Advisors chose topics and answered questions from startups based on their areas of expertise.
    • Growth Stage Dialogues: Companies pitching in the Growth Stage met with investors and other stakeholders for 25-minute sessions outside of the pitch competition. The conversations delved into legal issues, insurance questions, and how to bring in partners.
    • International Competition: Earlier in 2025, NREL held, a virtual competition for organizations headquartered outside of the United States, Canada, and Europe. The winner, Ampersand, based out of Kigali, Rwanda, was invited to pitch at the in-person IGF, where the company also earned the award for Best Growth Venture.
    • Developer University: As a customized offering for the IGF, project development and project finance experts from CREO, Spring Lane Capital, and Wilson Sonsini delivered a snapshot of their Developer University curriculum. The morning session provided attendees with a crash course on the practical tools and strategies used for project development and the finance and legal structures that enable first-of-a-kind energy deployments. 
    • NREL Tech Talks: Startups and investors alike benefited from discussions with NREL researchers who shared the state of innovation in 30-minute talks spanning across advanced solar manufacturing, built environment, the grid, critical materials and batteries.

    Face-to-Face Meetings Encourage Innovation

    Nearly 3,000 meetings were held at this year’s IGF, many of them during the must-attend one-on-one sessions. A longtime IGF attendee, Woodward treats the one-on-one sessions like office hours.

    “In a perfect world, you come across a company that’s interesting and that you want to continue to do due diligence on, and that ultimately leads to an investment,” he said.

    Two of the companies Woodward met with early on are from the West Gate portfolio. He asked pointed questions, tracking responses to challenges and opportunities. His advice for innovators remained consistent.

    “Control what you can control, keep your head down, plug away, and build a good team,” he said.

    Solomentsev met with 15 to 20 investors during the IGF, many of them during the one-on-one session.

    “It was really high value,” he said. “I loved the one-on-ones; I loved meeting a lot of people. I like learning about what other people are doing, and some of my most pleasant conversations are the ones with zero stakes where you’re just talking to another startup and then maybe there’s an introduction or a lead that comes out of that.”

    The meetings at the IGF saved him months of work, by bringing everyone together as only NREL can.

    “The reputation of the event, of NREL and the IEC, and their ability to attract great people and get them to come to Denver for this is unparalleled,” Solomentsev said.

    The Incubator/Accelerator Open House took place at the same time as the one-on-one meetings. The open house provided an opportunity for incubators and accelerators to set up tables in the expo hall and connect with startups, investors, and other IGF attendees to share information about their organizations and services.

    “That was so great for me,” Caldwell said. “If I wasn’t able to schedule time with folks, I could at least connect with them then, make eye contact, and say hello because everyone is friendly and willing to support you. Even if you meet someone that’s outside of the sphere you’re working in, there’s probably connections to be made.”

    Award Winners and Beyond

    Before the closing remarks of the conference, Cozart announced the winners of the pitch competition awards. Solomentsev was among the winners, earning the Best Early Venture award for Palanquin Power.

    “I’m very excited—I’m very happy to have won the award,” Solomentsev said. “It is very nice to get some sort of validation that people think the core business is a big enough opportunity.”

    Vatican City (Fides Agency) – Three chairs, which soon became two, placed in front of the baptistery in St. Peter’s Basilica. Facing each other, Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky – for a quarter of an hour and on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral- engaged in intense dialogue on the possibilities for ending the bloody conflict in Ukraine. It was an image that in its own way recalled the criteria that have inspired the Holy See’s contribution to attempts to resolve wars, conflicts, and international crises during the pontificate of Pope Francis. Fragments of what the Argentine pontiff himself had called the “world war in pieces.”The paths of dialogue, negotiation, and disarmament are those that the last bishop of Rome, with the help of Vatican diplomacy, repeatedly encouraged, describing them as the only viable ways to find solutions for everyone in ongoing conflicts.Starting with “tormented Syria,” which has always been close to the Argentine Pope’s heart. The Pontiff gave voice to refugees and displaced persons fleeing the violence of a war that, as the Pope himself said, has risked turning into “brutal persecution” for those who profess other religions. Appeals for Syria, which have become a constant feature of the Easter Urbi et Orbi blessings, have been made during several Angelus and Regina Coeli prayers, as well as at the end of Wednesday’s general audiences. Only a few years later, the same would happen with war-torn Ukraine.“How much blood has been shed! And how much suffering must still be endured before a political solution to the crisis can be found?” the Pope asked repeatedly, always calling for ‘courage’ and ‘determination’ to embark on the path of negotiations. He did so by proclaiming September 7, 2013, a day of prayer and penance for peace in Syria, the Middle East, and throughout the world, because, as he said during the Angelus prayer in which he announced this initiative, “Humanity needs to see gestures of peace and hear words of hope and peace!”The gestures were followed by further words, including letters to heads of state, and finally by his physical presence: in spring 2016, he told Syrian refugees housed in the Moria camp in Lesbos: “I want to tell you that you are not alone.” When he returned to Rome, he took three Syrian families with him.And that’s not all. During his apostolic journey to the Holy Land in May 2014, the Pope paused to pray in front of the separation wall built by Israel near Bethlehem, the city where Jesus was born. A few weeks later, the Pope brought together the then Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Vatican to pray together for peace in the Middle East. On this occasion, an olive tree was planted in the Vatican Gardens in the presence of Patriarch Bartholomew I and a delegation of Christians, Jews, and Muslims from the Holy Land as a symbol of peace.“Yes to keeping agreements and no to provocation; this requires courage,” said the Bishop of Rome in June 2024 before saying the closing prayer: “Many times and over many years, we have tried to resolve our conflicts with our own strength and even with our weapons; so many moments of hostility and darkness; so much blood shed; so many lives broken; so many hopes buried… But our efforts have been in vain. Now, Lord, help us! Grant us peace, teach us peace, lead us to peace! Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: “Never again war!” … And may these words—division, hatred, war—be banished from the hearts of every human being! Lord, disarm our tongues and our hands, renew our hearts and minds, so that the word we use to address one another may always be “brother,” and our lives may be expressed in “Shalom, Peace, Salam!” Amen.Last year, on the tenth anniversary of this historic meeting, Pope Francis wanted to gather the entire diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See around this olive tree, which has since grown, to commemorate the embrace between the two presidents. The ambassadors of Israel and Palestine to the Holy See sat next to the Pope.“Instead of pretending that war can solve problems and lead to peace, we must therefore be critical and vigilant toward an ideology that unfortunately prevails today, according to which ‘conflict, violence, and divisions are part of the normal functioning of society.’ It is always about power struggles between different social groups, about particular economic interests and about international political considerations that aim at an apparent peace and run away from the real problems. Instead, in a time marked by tragic conflicts, we need a new commitment to building a peaceful world. To all believers and people of good will, I say: Let us not cease to dream of peace and to build peaceful relationships!” These were the words spoken by the Pope in the early summer of 2024.A similar initiative was launched in spring 2019, when the Pope invited the civil and ecclesiastical authorities of South Sudan to a two-day spiritual retreat in the Vatican. Contrary to protocol, Pope Francis knelt before them and kissed the shoes of the South Sudanese leaders:“I implore that the fire of war may be extinguished once and for all.” Peace, according to the Bishop of Rome,“is the first gift that the Lord has given us, and it is the first duty that the leaders of nations must fulfill: peace is the fundamental condition for the respect of the rights of every human being and for the integral development of all peoples.” “Dear brothers and sisters, let us not forget that God has entrusted us, the political and religious leaders, with the task of guiding his people: he has entrusted much to us, and for this very reason he will demand all the more from us! He will ask us to give an account of our service and our office, of our commitment to peace and to the good we have done for the members of our communities, especially the poorest and most marginalised. In other words, he will ask us to give an account of our lives, but also of the lives of others.”“Peace is possible,” it is ‘a great gift from God,’ but it also requires a commitment from people “in dialogue, in negotiation, and in forgiveness.” After his words to the Sudanese leadership, Pope Francis said something similar in an interview regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine: “Stronger is the one who thinks of the people, who has the courage to raise the white flag,” and “when you see that things are not going well, you must have the courage to negotiate,” which does not mean surrender, “negotiating is never surrender.” In Gaza, too, he added on that occasion, there is a conflict that “is involves two, not one. The irresponsible ones are these two who are waging war. Today, with the help of the international powers, we can negotiate. The word negotiate is courageous. We need not be ashamed to negotiate before the situation gets worse.”Parallel to the path of dialogue runs the path of disarmament, from the demand for a ban on nuclear weapons to the condemnation of the arms race, the words of Pope Francis are in perfect continuity with those of his predecessors, from Benedict XV to Benedict XVI. The latter also advocated an end to the arms trade: “I would also say that the importation of arms must finally cease, because without the importation of arms, war could not continue. Instead of importing weapons, which is a grave sin, we should import ideas of peace and creativity; seek solutions that accept everyone in their otherness. We must therefore make visible in the world respect for religions, respect for human beings as creatures of God, and charity as fundamental to all religions.”Pope Francis took up this concept again in 2019 when he received participants at a meeting of relief organizations of the Eastern Churches and said: “Those who have nothing to eat, who have no medical care, who have no school, the orphans, the wounded and the widows raise their voices to heaven. Even if people’s hearts are insensitive, this is certainly not true of God’s heart, which is wounded by the hatred and violence that can erupt among his creatures, and which is always touched and concerned with the tenderness and strength of a protective and guiding father. But sometimes I also think of the wrath of God that will be unleashed on those responsible in countries that talk about peace and sell weapons to wage these wars. This hypocrisy is a sin.”Back in 2014, the Argentine pope had already said in his apostolic letter Evangelii gaudium: “There are economic systems that need to wage war to survive.” He repeated several times that the most profitable investments today are made in arms factories. On several occasions, especially in his Urbi et Orbi messages at Christmas and Easter, he called for weapons to be silenced and proposed the establishment of a world fund against hunger, to be financed with the money earmarked for arms. During the pandemic, while praying the Rosary in St. Peter’s Basilica, he proposed the creation of another fund, this time for research and studies: “Holy Mary, stir consciences so that the enormous sums spent on increasing and perfecting weapons may instead be used to promote adequate studies to prevent similar disasters in the future.”According to the latest figures from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) for 2023, global military spending will reach a record high of $2.44 trillion, representing an increase of 6.8% over the previous year.The US spent the most on weapons: $880 billion, followed by China ($309 billion) and Russia ($126 billion). If the military budget is divided by the number of inhabitants, the US spent an average of $2,694 per inhabitant. By comparison, Israel spent $29 billion in 2023, but achieved the highest per capita expenditure in the world: $2,997 per inhabitant.Pope Francis’ words on this subject are illuminating: “Certain decisions are not neutral: spending a large part of the budget on weapons means taking it away from something else, once again taking it away from those who lack the necessities. And that is a scandal. How much is spent on weapons is terrible. We must raise awareness that continuing to spend on weapons defiles the soul, the heart, humanity. What good is it if we all solemnly commit ourselves at the international level to campaigns against poverty, against hunger, against the destruction of the planet, if we then fall back into the old vice of war, into the old strategy of the power of arms, which sets everything and everyone back?   • MIL-OSI Europe: Grande Conférence with Nadia Murad, Nobel Peace Prize 2018

    On 25 April 2025, for the last Grande Conférence of this academic year, Sciences Po welcomed the co-recipient of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize – Nadia Murad. This event was introduced by Luis Vassy, President of Sciences Po, and moderated by Jeremy Perelman, Vice-President for International Affairs at Sciences Po.

    For 150 years, this school, that has been created after the defeat of France against Prussia, has been working on one issue: can democracies be more efficient than authocracies? Can good be more efficient than evil? And you, Nadia, have seen evil in the eyes.

    Nobel Peace Prize 2018

    Nadia Murad was born and raised a Yazidi in the small village of Kocho in Northern Iraq. On 3 August 2014, the Islamic State (ISIS) began a genocidal campaign against the Yazidi ethno-religious minority in Iraq. Nadia Murad was 21 years old.

    World leaders are well aware of the conditions that are associated with the onset of such atrocities, from the studies of previous genocides in Bosnia, Rwanda, Cambodia, the Holocaust, and the list goes on.

    Despite the warnings, the world watched in August 2014 as thousands of ISIS members, including many of our neighbours, brutally attacked Yazidis, village by village, murdering thousands of innocent men and elderly women, including six of my brothers and my mother.

    Young women, including myself, my sisters, my nieces, and my cousins, along with over 6,000 women and children, were forced into sexual slavery. ISIS imposed brutal policies on Yazadi women, viewing them as spoils of war.

    After her captivity, she became a powerful voice for survivors of genocide and sexual violence. In 2016, she was appointed as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.

    In 2018, Nadia Murad was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege, as she is a leading advocate for ending the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict. The same year, she published her memoir The Last Girl: My Story of Captivity, and My Fight Against the Islamic State (Virago) and launched a survivor-led NGO, Nadia’s Initiative.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Feenstra Introduces Legislation to Continue Safe Exports of Iowa Agricultural Products in Event of Foreign Animal Disease Outbreak

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Reps. Randy Feenstra (R-IA) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) and U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS), Katie Britt (R-AL), Tina Smith (D-MN), and Chris Coons (D-DE) introduced the Safe American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, which would codify USDA’s role in negotiating regionalization agreements that allow livestock, poultry, and other animal products from unaffected areas of the country to continue to be safely exported in the event of an animal disease outbreak. Although USDA already works with the United States Trade Representative to develop these agreements, this legislation explicitly expresses congressional support for establishing regionalization agreements and promoting robust agricultural trade policies before any animal disease impacts our nation.

    This bill also establishes a notification system within the Import and Export Library to prevent our producers from being impacted by changes in trade status of agricultural commodities and alert the proper agencies, organizations, and State Departments of Agriculture that there have been changes in import or export status.

    “Iowa farmers are the backbone of our economy and the breadbasket of our country and the world. However, an animal disease outbreak can be devastating for our producers, majorly disrupt trade with foreign countries, and close important export markets that our farmers depend on,” said Rep. Feenstra. “Understanding the dire financial and animal health consequences of a disease outbreak, I introduced the Safe American Food Exports Act so that we can negotiate comprehensive agreements with our trading partners and ensure that a disease outbreak in one part of the country does not impact Iowa’s ability to produce and export our agricultural goods. By working proactively on regionalization agreements and prioritizing farm biosecurity, we can safely ship our agricultural commodities around the globe, prevent massive trade disruptions, and mitigate the negative impacts of animal disease on our farmers, producers, and rural communities.”

    “Mississippi’s poultry exporters and producers have suffered during the bird flu. Animal diseases often cause trade disruptions, and the government should help protect American agriculture exports in these situations,” said Sen. Wicker. “The Safe American Food Exports Act would help do that. The bill would give the USDA authority to negotiate regionalization agreements to ensure America’s agricultural producers are not shut off from the global market.”

  • MIL-OSI Africa: SARS welcomes agreement to suspend VAT increase

    The Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), Edward Kieswetter, has welcomed the agreement between the parties and the court order to suspend the 0.5 percentage point increase in value-added tax (VAT).

    The VAT increase was initially announced to come into effect on 1 May 2025. 

    The Minister of Finance and main respondents in the matter, the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), agreed to have the matter settled out of court, and the Western Cape High Court subsequently ratified the agreement on 27 April 2025.

    “This is an important order that provides clarity to SARS to effectively and efficiently administer the VAT Act. It also has practical implication for consumers and VAT vendors charged with managing VAT.

    “The court’s order suspends the 0.5 percentage point increase that was originally announced to come into effect on 1 May 2015 and there is, therefore, no basis for VAT vendors to implement an increase of VAT rate,” SARS said.

    The revenue service urged all vendors to readjust their systems back to 15%, while also calling on consumers to ensure that they are charged the correct VAT rate of 15%. 

    “In the unlikely event they are charged 15.5%, consumers should bring this to the attention of the vendor and ensure that this is resolved at the point of sale or otherwise by mutual agreement,” SARS said. 

    Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana has agreed to the court order suspending his decision to increase the VAT rate by 0.5 percentage points.

    “[Minister] Godongwana welcomes the court order, as it is entirely consistent with his announcement on 23 April 2025 to suspend the VAT increase. Having already announced the withdrawal, the Minister felt that he would no longer have cause to continue with the court case.

    “The context to the suspension of the increase is set out in an affidavit filed earlier on Sunday by the Minister in response to the Democratic Alliance’s (“the DA”) supplementary affidavit filed on 25 April 2025,” National Treasury said in a statement. – SAnews.gov.za

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Health Department commemorates African Vaccination Week

    The Department of Health has urged parents and caregivers to ensure their children are up-to-date with vaccinations, as South Africa joins the rest of the continent in commemorating African Vaccination Week.

    African Vaccination Week, observed from 23 to 30 April, aims to promote the life-saving benefits of immunisation. 

    This initiative seeks to protect people of all ages from vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio and diphtheria, among others.

    According to the department, vaccination remains the most cost-effective public health intervention to save lives and the first line of defence against many diseases. 

    African Vaccination Week is celebrated alongside other World Health Organisation (WHO) regions during World Immunisation Week (WIW). 

    Its goal is to enhance advocacy for improved access to vaccination throughout the life course.

    According to WHO, immunisation prevents between 3.5 and 5 million deaths every year from diseases like diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, also known as whooping cough, influenza and measles. 

    “Globally in 2023, 14.5 million children were missing out on any vaccination, so-called zero-dose children. It is for this reason that the department is working with provinces and other stakeholders to address immunisation gaps and improve vaccination coverage in the country,” WHO said in a statement. 

    WATCH | Routine immunisation is an important part of ensuring children stay healthy and reduce the risk of contracting childhood diseases.

    The Health Department announced that it will leverage the 2025 campaign to enhance vaccination and surveillance efforts aimed at addressing immunity gaps in districts with low vaccination rates. 

    These areas have been identified as having a significant number of under-vaccinated and unvaccinated children, often referred to as zero-dose children. 

    According to the department, this initiative is part of the broader goal of preventing outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.

    “Although 80% of children in South Africa have received all their vaccinations by the age of one year, this means that one in five children has missed one or more doses and is therefore not fully protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.” 

    The department said all vaccines contained in the National Immunisation Schedule are provided free of charge at all primary healthcare facilities across the country. 

    Parents and caregivers are encouraged to check their child’s Road to Health booklet and take their child to a health facility for vaccination if the child is due for or has missed any doses.

    African Vaccination Week 2025 is commemorated under the theme: “Immunisation for All is Humanly Possible”.

    This theme aims to highlight the profound impact of vaccines on human health and their potential to achieve global health security.

    The department is expected to host a webinar on Tuesday, 29 April 2025, as part of African Vaccination Week activities to strengthen awareness of the importance of life course vaccines and provide a continuous update on the new developments around vaccines in South Africa. – SAnews.gov.za

    South Africa, through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), has conveyed its condolences to the government and people of Iran following the explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran. 

    The department said the explosion resulted in the deaths of over 40 people and left more than 1 000 people seriously injured.

    CNN reported that eyewitness accounts indicate that chemicals in a section of shipping containers ignited, leading to a much larger explosion. 

    According to recent reports, the death toll has risen significantly, with one official telling Iranian State media on Monday that at least 70 people have died.

    “South Africa extends its heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured persons, including those from various other countries. 

    “We commend the efforts of the emergency response teams and volunteers who are working tirelessly to provide relief and support to those in need, and also commend governments who have provided swift support.

    The Western Cape Government (WCG) is inviting residents to provide feedback on the proposed increases to motor vehicle licence (MVL) fees. 

    These proposals were published in the Provincial Gazette Extraordinary 9057 on 17 April 2025.

    The proposed fee increases are set to take effect on 1 August 2025 and are open for public comment until Saturday, 17 May 2025.

    “The Western Cape is home to over two million registered vehicles, and the condition of our roads is consistently rated among the best in the country.

    “This is largely due to the provincial government’s commitment to ringfencing MVL revenue to maintain, upgrade, and expand our road network,” the WCG said in a statement.  

    According to the Western Cape Mobility Department, paying vehicle licence fees is not just a legal requirement — it is an important contribution to keeping roads safe, efficient, and reliable for everyone. 

    “These fees are directly reinvested into the Western Cape’s road infrastructure, helping to build and maintain the roads that connect our communities, support economic activity, and enable daily life,” the department explained. 

    MVL fees are primarily used to build, upgrade, and maintain the provincially owned road network. They also assist municipalities in maintaining their more strategic roads and ensure continued safe mobility for all road users, including residents, freight operators, tourists, and public transport passengers.

    “The Western Cape’s road network is a vital provincial asset that supports commerce, tourism, service delivery and job creation. By ensuring that our roads remain in optimal condition, the province safeguards economic competitiveness and enhances quality of life,” the WCG said.

    The Border Management Authority (BMA) has successfully thwarted over 6 200 attempted illegal crossings into South Africa over the Easter period, marking a dramatic 63% increase in enforcement success compared to the same time last year.

    The 10-day operation, which ran from 15 to 24 April, saw 6 253 would-be illegal migrants detected — up from 3 841 in 2024 Easter period. 

    The sharp rise in prevention is the result of a sweeping digital overhaul of South Africa’s border control systems.

    For the first time during an Easter period, the BMA deployed cutting-edge surveillance tools, including AI-powered night-vision drones, advanced body cameras, and smart monitoring equipment. The technology allowed for real-time tracking and faster interception of illegal activities, signalling a bold new era in border security.

    “While we are still early in the reform process, the digital transformation of border management is clearly yielding meaningful progress,” said Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber. 

    “The success of Easter operations to clamp down on illegal immigration follows on similar improvements over the 2024/25 Festive Season, indicating sustained improvement in the efficiency of border management.”

    The Easter season is traditionally a high-traffic period across South Africa’s ports of entry, prompting the BMA to scale up its enforcement activities annually. This year, however, the technological edge proved to be a game-changer.

    “We still have a long way to go but the digital transformation of the border environment has set South Africa on a new trajectory towards secure and efficient border management.     Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is today attending the bail hearing of a suspect charged with assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm (GBH) and attempted murder.

    This follows a harrowing case of gender-based violence in the Maswazini area, Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal.

    “On 16 April 2025, a woman was allegedly attacked by her ex-boyfriend while at home with her mother. The suspect reportedly assaulted the mother before proceeding to violently attack the young woman, allegedly gouging both of her eyes with a screwdriver. She is currently receiving treatment at the Harry Gwala District Hospital,” the Ministry of Police said ahead of Monday’s bail hearing.

    The accused was traced and arrested soon after the incident and is set to appear in the Richmond Magistrate Court.

    “The Minister is attending the court proceedings in support of the victim and her family. His attendance follows a personal visit to the family on Sunday where he extended his sympathies and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the fight against gender-based violence and Femicide (GBVF), a national priority,” the police said. – SAnews.gov.za

    The Ministry of Police has expressed has “grave” concern over the disappearance of three members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

    This as police announced a R350 000 reward for information leading to the whereabouts of three missing police constables and the arrest of those behind their disappearance.

    “We have been briefed by the National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, who has assured us that every possible lead is being followed,” said Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

    Masemola and the Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, on Sunday met with the team involved in investigating the disappearance of three police officers.

    The delegation also met with the families of the three police officers.

    In a statement, the Minister said the families will continue to receive support and updates from the SAPS leadership. 

    “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time. These are highly valued members of the South African Police Service. We want to express our gratitude for the support from the Premier of the Free State and MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport. We call on the community to assist law enforcement.

    “No piece of information is too small. These are our colleagues, our sons and daughters, and we must act as one in ensuring their safe return. The National Commissioner has announced that a reward of R350 000.00 is available for information which can lead to the whereabouts of our members and the whereabouts of those criminals that are behind their disappearance,” said the Minister.

    The Minister said he has full confidence in the team set up by the National Commissioner.

    “Anyone with information is requested to contact the investigating officer, Captain Chaacha Manga, on 082 527 6099”, said Minister Mchunu. 

    On Saturday, the National Commissioner appealed to members of the public for assistance in finding the missing constables.

    The two women, namely 30-year-old constable Keamogetswe Buys and 20-year-old constable Boipelo Senoge and 24-year-old male constable, Constable Cebekhulu Linda were travelling in a white VW Polo sedan from Bloemfontein to their area of deployment in Limpopo when they went missing.

    Their last known location was at the Engen garage near the Grasmere toll plaza on the N1 on Wednesday, 23 April 2025.

    “Their vehicle tracking device and cellphones have been off since the day of their disappearance. Their vehicle registration number is JCL 401 FS. A 24-hour Venue Operational Centre (VOC) has been established, and a full-scale search is underway with a high-level team of detectives and crime intelligence operators from Gauteng and the Free State have been mobilised to find them,” said the SAPS.

    At the time of their disappearance, the officers were off duty and did not make to their area of deployment.

    Meanwhile, the Commissioner said the team investigating the matter consists of highly skilled and experienced police officers from various disciplines within the SAPS.

    “These include seasoned expert detectives, crime and counter intelligence operatives, as well as members from the  Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI) Tactical Operations and Management Section (TOMS) and other key specialised units including our cyber-crime unit.

    “We have pulled maximum resources together to find our young police officers safe, unharmed and alive, and this remains our key focus. The second focus of our investigation is to find those who are behind the disappearance of these members,” he said on Sunday. –SAnews.gov.za

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Easter Weekend road crashes decline by 32.5%

    This year’s Easter Weekend Road Safety Report shows that South recorded the lowest number of crashes and fatalities in the last three years.

    “Crashes were reduced from 209 in 2024 to 141 in 2025, which is a 32.5% overall decrease compared to 2024,” Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said on Tuesday.

    According to the Minister, all provinces recorded decreases except the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga, which both recorded an increase.

    “Fatalities were reduced from 307 in 2024 to 167 in 2025, which is a 45.6% decrease. All provinces recorded decreases in fatalities except Mpumalanga, which recorded a 27.3% increase compared to 2024. 

    “Twenty-eight fatalities were recorded in Mpumalanga compared to 22 in 2024,” Creecy said in Pretoria during a media briefing.

    The 2025 Easter Season Road Safety Arrive Alive campaign was launched on 20 March and will run until 2 May 2025, under the theme: “It begins with Me”.

    Government has attributed the overall decrease in both accidents and fatalities to widespread and consistent law enforcement operations across all nine provinces; coordinated action by national, provincial and local government authorities, and significant partnerships between civil society and government.

    “Long weekends are a period when the risk of fatal crashes and fatalities increase because of drunken driving, increased pedestrian movements, sports and social events, including increase traffic volumes on national and provincial routes.

    “These statistics tell us that there is a benefit when we start our communication and education campaign earlier than the travel period. It shows that the involvement of civil society organisation and collaboration of all law enforcement agencies is pivotal in impacting on road user behaviour.

    “Furthermore, joint planning by law enforcement agencies from national, provincial, and municipal level increases the impact of operations,” she said.

    The Minister said Easter weekend statistics are reflective or a broader downward trend in road accidents and accident related fatalities. 

    “From January to March, we have seen a 16% decline in the number of fatalities and a 13% decrease in the total number of road accidents.

    “Crashes decreased in eight provinces except Mpumalanga which recorded the same number of crashes as in the previous year,” she said.

    Fatalities decreased in seven provinces except Free State, which had a 5% increase, and Mpumalanga had a 1% increase.

    Fatalities involving pedestrians now account for 47% or almost half of all road deaths. 

    “This shocking reality indicates that our message to pedestrians is not reaching home and we have to do much more work at a local level where these accidents occur.

    “Overall, we now belief that it will be possible to meet our target to reduce crashes and fatalities by at least 50% by 2029. Our challenge is to sustain this achievement daily, weekly and monthly,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za

  • MIL-OSI Global: Ghana’s citizens have a right to protest: what does the law say about restricting it?

    Ghana’s attorney general and minister of justice dropped charges against members of Democracy Hub, a civil society group, in February 2025, after four months of prosecution. The group had organised a protest in September 2024 against the widespread destruction and contamination of the country’s water bodies by persons and gangs engaged in illegal artisanal mining.

    Media reports alleged police harassment and use of excessive force during the three-day protest. The actions of the police and the courts were the latest in a history of suppression of the exercise of the right to protest. They are based on a military-era law that the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional three decades ago.

    The situation highlights the tension between the right to protest and lawful interference with those rights. As a criminologist and an expert in constitutional law, we argue that the tension can be minimised by considering four factors:

    • location and time

    • rights of others

    • target of protest

    • intentions of protesters.

    Right to protest in Ghana

    Ghana’s 1992 constitution guarantees the right to protest. However, as is standard practice in democracies, the constitution also allows these rights to be restricted on specified public interest grounds. Restrictions must be “reasonably required” in the interest of defence, public safety, public order, public health or the running of essential services.

    The challenge democratic societies face is managing the apparent tension between people’s fundamental rights to protest and the need, sometimes, to interfere with those rights in the larger public interest.

    While Ghana’s Supreme Court ruling in 1993 forbids any action that would deny protesters their right to protest, it had grey areas. For example, it did not offer clear guidance on what would make a restriction “reasonably required” and “reasonably justifiable in terms of the spirit of the constitution”.

    Ghana is a former British colony, and its law and legal system continue to be influenced by UK legal principles. So the UK can offer guidance. In 2021, in the case of Director of Public Prosecutions v Ziegler and others, the UK Supreme Court pronounced certain principles and factors that police, prosecutors and judges must consider.

    Location and time

    The UK court reasoned that the right to protest includes the right to choose when and where to hold the protest. The location or path of a protest will determine whether its message is received by the intended target and what impact it will have.

    The Ghanaian police and courts have often violated this principle when a protest is stopped because the location is a so-called “security zone”. The basis for this categorisation is not clearly specified or defined in law. The Ghana constitution specifies that any restriction of the right to protest must be contained in “a law”.

    Rights of others

    Ghanaian law does not allow protesters to obstruct traffic, cause confusion or disorder, or violate the rights and freedoms of other members of the public. But protests almost always do cause some interference with the rights of others.

    That’s not sufficient reason to interfere with the right to protest. According to the UK Supreme Court, the police and courts must establish the extent of the actual violation of citizens’ rights – such as how many people were likely to be inconvenienced.

    Target of protests

    Where there is obstruction, there must be evidence that it was not connected to the reasons for the protest. One accusation against the Democracy Hub protesters was that they blocked the entrance to a health facility. Had they blocked access to, say, an authority responsible for granting licences for artisanal mining, the police would not have been justified in arresting them. The police must also show that no alternative routes were reasonably available to the inconvenienced public.

    Intentions of protesters

    This factor requires the police and courts to consider whether a protest is intended to be peaceful. Cooperating with the police, such as notifying them about the intended protest, signifies a peaceful intent. The UK court notes that where a protest is intended to be peaceful and is, indeed, peaceful, protesters will have the right to resist police arrest.

    A fair hand

    The checklist is not exhaustive, but it puts an important obligation on the police and the courts not to interfere unreasonably with the fundamental rights of citizens. While the right to protest is not absolute, it remains fundamental in a democracy. Therefore, a restriction of the right cannot be absolute either. The restriction must be reasonable and proportionate.

    In short, the restrictions attached to the right to assemble and to protest are designed to do no more than restrict (limit or constrain), within reasonable limits, how, where and when the right may be exercised. They are not meant to destroy or undermine protesters’ ability to exercise that right to achieve their desired goals.

    Current Ghanaian police and judicial practice must change, along the lines of the UK Supreme Court’s ruling, to ensure the right to protest is not treated as less valuable or less important than the restrictions that may be applied to limit it.

    Delivering a keynote address at the T20 Africa High-Level Policy Dialogue in Pretoria, he emphasised both the continent’s potential and its challenges.

    “This gathering emphasises the need for Africa to address the persistent challenges of economic development, political instability, and governance weaknesses. 

    “It calls for a critical evaluation of current interventions aimed at strengthening Africa’s priorities, including economic growth, sustainable development, and global governance reforms. Africa is ours, and we must create the Africa we want,” the hold the attendees. 

    The T20, or Think 20, produces, discusses, consolidates and presents ideas on how to face current and emerging challenges that may be addressed by the G20. 

    Key themes included leveraging the continent’s young population, promoting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and addressing systemic challenges such as unemployment, especially youth joblessness, infrastructure gaps, and economic marginalisation.

    The country’s second-in-command stressed the importance of digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies as critical tools for African development.

    According to the Deputy President, South Africa’s representative underscored the significance of the African Union’s new permanent membership in the G20, calling it a “transformational moment in global governance”.

    He said South Africa’s Presidency’s theme of “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability” aims to reimagine multilateralism and prioritise the needs of the Global South.

    Critical priorities include mobilising finance for a Just Energy Transition, ensuring debt sustainability for developing economies, and creating strategic approaches to critical mineral development that prioritise local value addition.

    Mashatile believes that the dialogue represents a crucial step in positioning Africa as an active participant in global economic discussions, rather than a passive recipient of international policies.

    He said Africa currently stands at a crucial juncture in its development journey, with a growing population and vast natural resources, yet it remains underdeveloped.

    The Deputy President is of the view that the presence of a youthful population offers a range of possibilities for the development of the continent.

    He also touched on the challenges facing multilateralism, which have been apparent for an extended period. 

    “Therefore, we should take a dim view and strongly discourage the erosion of multilateralism, as it poses a potential threat to global growth and stability. A fair, transparent, equitable, and inclusive international order is essential for economic stability and sustained growth.” 

    He warned that the ongoing trade tensions may result in a rising cost of living due to increased prices, particularly for manufactured goods, potentially exacerbating the sluggish economic growth across our continent. 

    “It is necessary that we respond collectively and decisively as Africans, while increasing capacity and capability to reduce dependency.“

    According to the Deputy President, a fair, inclusive global order is possible, but it requires leadership grounded in equity, responsibility, and cooperation. 

    “The G20 should form part of this as we seek to unite as country states and develop policies that are progressive for the interest of all. We intend to work with like-minded countries and progressive institutions to establish a more equitable, representative, and just international order.” 

    While the G20 is not a substitute for existing international institutions, he said it must complement and accelerate progress on already agreed global commitments.

    “Let us remember that the strength of the G20 lies in its diversity and inclusivity. Strengthening African agency within this framework not only empowers African States but also increases the credibility and efficacy of global governance.

    Minister of Higher Education, Nobuhle Nkabane, has emphasised government’s commitment to providing students with the necessary support for their educational pursuits. 

    She highlighted crucial aspects of the disbursement of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) allowances and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) appeals process.

    “The timely disbursement of TVET allowances and the NSFAS appeals process are paramount towards a streamlined and transparent funding process that ensures that no student is left behind,” she said in a media statement. 

    “Access to education is not just a privilege, it is a fundamental right that facilitates personal and national growth.” 

    This is after recent delays in the disbursement of TVET student allowances, which were scheduled for 25 April 2025 but were affected by a system glitch. 
    NSFAS confirmed that payments were processed on 26 April and reflected in student accounts by 27 April. 

    The Minister acknowledged the inconvenience caused by these delays, stating that a specific group of approximately 800 students from one institution faced additional challenges regarding fund transfers. 

    However, NSFAS pledged to resolve these issues by Wednesday, 30 April. 

    “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by the delays in allowances – delayed payments are unacceptable. We recognise the impact of these delays as students depend entirely on their allowances for living expenses,” she said. 

    She said NSFAS is prioritising the settlement of all outstanding amounts from 2024 owed to students and accommodation providers, with communication expected by the end of the month.

    Appeals process

    The Minister also touched on the appeals process, reporting that most appeals submitted for 2025 have been successfully addressed and are currently under review by the NSFAS Appeals and Tribunals Committee. 

    Students are encouraged to regularly check their accounts for updates on their appeals.

    The Minister also spoke about the qualification code discrepancies that affected fund disbursements to eligible students, which have been identified and largely resolved. 

    However, she said this discrepancy notably impacted students enrolled in specific National Certificate Vocational (NCV) programmes. 

    She expects the release of results to be done between 9 and 12 May, which will facilitate the disbursement of NSFAS funds to the affected students.

    “As the Minister of Higher Education, I appreciate the patience and understanding of all affected students and stakeholders during this process, and we remain committed to ensuring that all eligible students receive their funding and results promptly,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za

  • MIL-OSI Africa: US-China trade war could hurt Nigerian entrepreneurs: why, and how they should prepare

    As China and the United States lock horns in a trade war, slamming tariffs on each other, entrepreneurs in Nigeria are vulnerable to the fallout. In 2024, 27.8% of imports into Nigeria came from China. In the same year, US exports to Nigeria reached US$4.2 billion. Economist and entrepreneurship researcher Tolu Olarewaju unpacks what could happen if Chinese products destined for the American market were diverted to developing economies, including Nigeria.

    What dangers do the tariff tensions pose to Nigeria’s entrepreneurs?

    China is the world’s biggest manufacturing nation, producing far more than its population consumes domestically. It is already running an almost US$1 trillion goods surplus, meaning it exports more goods than it imports.

    China is often producing those goods at below the true cost of production due to domestic subsidies and state financial support, like cheap loans for favoured firms.

    If the goods it currently exports are unable to enter the US because tariffs have made them too expensive, Chinese firms could seek to divert them to other countries. This could be beneficial for some consumers. But it could undercut entrepreneurs who make competing products in these countries and threaten jobs and wages.

    Looking at the past profile of Chinese exports to Nigeria, these are some Nigerian goods that could be replaced by cheaper goods from China:

    Textiles and garments: Nigeria is the largest producer of textiles in west Africa. The Nigerian textile, apparel, and footwear sector contributed 2.97% to Nigeria’s GDP in 2023 and contracted by 1.75% in the first quarter of 2024. Locally made fabrics, garments and leather goods can easily be replaced by Chinese products, especially in the low-cost and mass-market segment. This is because China is one of the sector’s largest producers globally and can export at low cost.

    In 2024, the US was the top destination for China’s textiles exports.

    Furniture and home décor: Nigerian artisans are skilled at producing wooden furniture, home décor items, and other interior products. However, China is a global leader in furniture manufacturing. It offers mass-produced, inexpensive items. The wide variety and affordability could displace Nigerian furniture makers. The furniture market in Nigeria is expected to generate revenue of US$5.11 billion in 2025 and experience an annual growth rate of 2.93% between 2025 and 2029.

    Footwear: The Nigerian footwear market is valued at US$2.57 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow annually by 9.83%. The Nigerian footwear industry produces around 50 million pairs of shoes annually and employs over 500,000 people. China is one of the largest producers of footwear. In the US, 61.9% of all shoes are imported from China. Nigerian shoe manufacturers may find it difficult to compete with the flood of affordable Chinese-made footwear.

    Beauty, cosmetic, and skincare products: The Nigerian soap market is growing. It generated revenue of US$660.5 million in 2024 and is expected to reach US$1.07 billion by 2030. With a population of over 200 million, the demand for soap products is increasing. China is a major supplier of inexpensive, mass-produced beauty products.

    What are the biggest challenges holding back Nigerian entrepreneurs?

    Weak infrastructure: Frequent power outages make it difficult for businesses to operate and distribute their products. This is a significant barrier, especially in the age of digital technologies, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Poor road conditions also make it difficult to transport goods.

    High inflation: Nigeria’s headline inflation rate on a year-on-year basis stood at 24.48% in January 2025, and 29.90% in January 2024. High inflation raises the cost of raw materials, fuel, utilities and transport.

    Inflation also means a reduction in the purchasing power of consumers. While inflation should make Nigeria a less attractive market, Chinese goods are typically cheaper than local or western alternatives, even when inflation affects import costs.

    Interest rates for business loans are high in Nigeria. This reduces profit margins and makes it harder to maintain affordable prices for consumers.

    A poor business environment: Nigeria’s unpredictable political and economic landscape, characterised by shifting policies, and inconsistent regulations, makes it difficult for entrepreneurs to plan. They need to be able to forecast expenses, set pricing strategies or invest in long-term projects.

    Corruption also increases the costs of doing business and makes the business environment more uncertain.

    While it might seem logical for the government to protect the domestic business environment with blanket tariffs as suggested by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a more strategic approach is needed, one that focuses on targeted tariffs and investing in sectors with strong growth potential.

    Limited access to finance and high interest rates: Access to finance is a major barrier due to high interest rates and unreasonable collateral requirements for business credit.

    Currency depreciation and exchange rate volatility: The Nigerian naira has depreciated against foreign currencies in recent years. Entrepreneurs who rely on imports for raw materials or equipment have been hit hard by fluctuating exchange rates. Rising import costs can lead to even higher production costs. For businesses looking to export, this volatility can reduce the profitability of foreign sales, discouraging expansion into international markets.

    What should Nigeria’s entrepreneurs do to prepare for any potential fallout from the China-US trade war?

    Identify niche market needs: They should identify a market need that is not being met or that is under-served and cannot easily be met by Chinese goods.

    Focus on customer service: This way, entrepreneurs can build customer loyalty and reputation despite the influx of cheap goods.

    Embrace innovation: Nigerian entrepreneurs should be open to new ideas and technologies that can help them create new products and services, increase efficiency and reduce costs.

    Diversify supply chains: Relying heavily on imports from one country, especially raw materials, machinery, or electronics, can lead to shortages and price hikes if trade tensions escalate. Businesses should identify alternative suppliers, explore local sourcing options, and build stockpiles of essential inputs.

    Explore new export markets: Nigerian entrepreneurs should exploit regional trade agreements like the African Continental Free Trade Area for easier access to African markets.

    Naming all the creatures and plants in nature is no small task. Fortunate Phaka is a zoologist who has conducted the first comprehensive analysis of naming and classification of frogs and reptiles in nine South African cultures. The list includes 136 frog and 407 reptile species that have been scientifically described. He explains why it’s important to record all the species names that people use in their own languages.


    Why did you study the indigenous names of frogs and reptiles?

    I am interested in the interactions between wildlife and people. These interactions include, for example, how people use wildlife in figures of speech, harvesting of wildlife for consumption, and of course how animals are assigned names.

    If everyone’s names for things are known and shared, the ideas behind the names can also be shared, appreciated and valued.

    Conservation planning is improved by consideration of different wildlife perspectives, which is revealed partly by the names that different people give wildlife.

    Knowing local names can provide assurance that people from different cultural backgrounds are talking about the same species.

    In South Africa, for example, there are 11 official spoken languages and scientists use Latin names for species. Most people aren’t familiar with the scientific names.

    That’s why we extended the list of scientific, Afrikaans and English names of South African frogs and reptiles to include names in the country’s other nine official languages.

    How did you go about it, and what did you find?

    The project started as a pilot study in 2016, carried out in the Zululand area of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, where frog biodiversity is high and Indigenous cultural practices are still part of everyday life. Results of the pilot were published as a book in 2017 and as a scientific publication in 2019.

    Following the success of the pilot study, I collected responses from 287 South African Indigenous language speakers (aged between 25 and 57) using an online questionnaire and in-person interviews while on field trips, and reviewed 18 scientific articles, dissertations and books to study naming practices even further.

    The study shed light on the way people group animals (folk taxonomy) and how that compares with the way scientists group them (scientific taxonomy).

    It became clear that Indigenous language names were often assigned based on unique features of frogs or reptiles, such as the sound they make, how they move or where they are found. Most of these names group several species together based on their similarities. This meant most frog and reptile species did not have Indigenous language names that were unique to them. For example, zoologists have named eight different Reed Frog species from South Africa but these eight species were assigned one Indigenous name that groups them together.

    The organised way of assigning Indigenous names to animals has some similarities to how scientists assign names that are unique to each species. For example, the Grass Frog species are grouped together under the scientific genus Ptychadena, and in IsiZulu the same species are grouped under the name Uvete. These similarities meant we could combine scientific naming practices with Indigenous naming practices to give each species a unique name in multiple languages.

    To ensure the unique Indigenous names remained familiar to speakers of respective languages, we added descriptive terms to the existing general Indigenous names to make them specific, instead of coining an entirely new name. For example in IsiZulu the general name Umgqagqa (used for all Reed Frogs) became Umgqagqa opendiwe (specific name for the Painted Reed Frog). And several other descriptive terms were added to Umgqagqa to distinguish between the eight Reed Frog species of South Africa.

    Why does it matter to record the Indigenous names of species?

    Conservation hasn’t been doing a good job of being inclusive. Knowing Indigenous names and the local perspectives behind those names is a good way to start being aware of the multiple other perspectives. Conservation should ultimately be to everyone’s benefit.

    For a long time wildlife guidebooks have had very few Indigenous language names in them. With increased recording of Indigenous names, any South African would be able to open a wildlife guide and read a name in any of our 11 official spoken languages. Hopefully one day we can have more books like the Bilingual Guide to the Frogs of Zululand (IsiZulu version: Isiqondiso Sasefilidini Esindimimbili Ngamaxoxo AkwelaKwaZulu) that make it possible for you to read about your favourite wildlife in your preferred language.

    Has this been done for other groups of animals or plants?

    Birds and plants are two groups that have received this kind of attention.

    A recent scientific publication has worked on IsiZulu names for all South African birds and another publication studied the morphology of IsiZulu bird names. There has also been work on IsiXhosa insect names, and there has been a SeSotho animal word list published online. Indigenous names for African wildlife have received sporadic attention in the past, but with the recent increases in calls for consideration of Indigenous knowledge there has been increasing focus on understanding these names and using them.

    Do you have some favourite names?

    I have a lot of favourites but there are some names that stand out, like Senana (Sepedi general name for Rain Frogs) and Lebololo (Sepedi name for Puff adder). These names have the same root word or sound throughout most of the Indigenous South African languages and I am curious about how this happened. Rain Frogs are also called Senanatswidi in Sepedi and tswidi is an onomatopoeic reference to the whistling sound that Rain Frogs make.

    Naming all the creatures and plants in nature is no small task. Fortunate Phaka is a zoologist who has conducted the first comprehensive analysis of naming and classification of frogs and reptiles in nine South African cultures. The list includes 136 frog and 407 reptile species that have been scientifically described. He explains why it’s important to record all the species names that people use in their own languages.


    Why did you study the indigenous names of frogs and reptiles?

    I am interested in the interactions between wildlife and people. These interactions include, for example, how people use wildlife in figures of speech, harvesting of wildlife for consumption, and of course how animals are assigned names.

    If everyone’s names for things are known and shared, the ideas behind the names can also be shared, appreciated and valued.

    Conservation planning is improved by consideration of different wildlife perspectives, which is revealed partly by the names that different people give wildlife.

    Knowing local names can provide assurance that people from different cultural backgrounds are talking about the same species.

    In South Africa, for example, there are 11 official spoken languages and scientists use Latin names for species. Most people aren’t familiar with the scientific names.

    That’s why we extended the list of scientific, Afrikaans and English names of South African frogs and reptiles to include names in the country’s other nine official languages.

    How did you go about it, and what did you find?

    The project started as a pilot study in 2016, carried out in the Zululand area of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, where frog biodiversity is high and Indigenous cultural practices are still part of everyday life. Results of the pilot were published as a book in 2017 and as a scientific publication in 2019.

    Following the success of the pilot study, I collected responses from 287 South African Indigenous language speakers (aged between 25 and 57) using an online questionnaire and in-person interviews while on field trips, and reviewed 18 scientific articles, dissertations and books to study naming practices even further.

    The study shed light on the way people group animals (folk taxonomy) and how that compares with the way scientists group them (scientific taxonomy).

    It became clear that Indigenous language names were often assigned based on unique features of frogs or reptiles, such as the sound they make, how they move or where they are found. Most of these names group several species together based on their similarities. This meant most frog and reptile species did not have Indigenous language names that were unique to them. For example, zoologists have named eight different Reed Frog species from South Africa but these eight species were assigned one Indigenous name that groups them together.

    The organised way of assigning Indigenous names to animals has some similarities to how scientists assign names that are unique to each species. For example, the Grass Frog species are grouped together under the scientific genus Ptychadena, and in IsiZulu the same species are grouped under the name Uvete. These similarities meant we could combine scientific naming practices with Indigenous naming practices to give each species a unique name in multiple languages.

    To ensure the unique Indigenous names remained familiar to speakers of respective languages, we added descriptive terms to the existing general Indigenous names to make them specific, instead of coining an entirely new name. For example in IsiZulu the general name Umgqagqa (used for all Reed Frogs) became Umgqagqa opendiwe (specific name for the Painted Reed Frog). And several other descriptive terms were added to Umgqagqa to distinguish between the eight Reed Frog species of South Africa.

    Why does it matter to record the Indigenous names of species?

    Conservation hasn’t been doing a good job of being inclusive. Knowing Indigenous names and the local perspectives behind those names is a good way to start being aware of the multiple other perspectives. Conservation should ultimately be to everyone’s benefit.

    For a long time wildlife guidebooks have had very few Indigenous language names in them. With increased recording of Indigenous names, any South African would be able to open a wildlife guide and read a name in any of our 11 official spoken languages. Hopefully one day we can have more books like the Bilingual Guide to the Frogs of Zululand (IsiZulu version: Isiqondiso Sasefilidini Esindimimbili Ngamaxoxo AkwelaKwaZulu) that make it possible for you to read about your favourite wildlife in your preferred language.

    Has this been done for other groups of animals or plants?

    Birds and plants are two groups that have received this kind of attention.

    A recent scientific publication has worked on IsiZulu names for all South African birds and another publication studied the morphology of IsiZulu bird names. There has also been work on IsiXhosa insect names, and there has been a SeSotho animal word list published online. Indigenous names for African wildlife have received sporadic attention in the past, but with the recent increases in calls for consideration of Indigenous knowledge there has been increasing focus on understanding these names and using them.

    Do you have some favourite names?

    I have a lot of favourites but there are some names that stand out, like Senana (Sepedi general name for Rain Frogs) and Lebololo (Sepedi name for Puff adder). These names have the same root word or sound throughout most of the Indigenous South African languages and I am curious about how this happened. Rain Frogs are also called Senanatswidi in Sepedi and tswidi is an onomatopoeic reference to the whistling sound that Rain Frogs make.

    The faster-than-anticipated shift in the government IT market toward COTS government software presents new strategic opportunities for cBrain. As a result, cBrain (NASDAQ: CBRAIN) has announced to adjust its growth strategy during the first half of 2025 to capitalize on these market changes.

    Consequently, the growth strategy is extended by adding a focus on two market niches with global potential. Utilizing a strong financial position, cBrain is now building two new units, dedicated to achieving global leadership in two global solution areas, referred to as Paperless Ministry and Environmental Permitting.

    Solid development in Denmark and internationally

    cBrain has entered the year as planned with continued development in Denmark and international markets.

    In January, cBrain announced an agreement to deliver the F2 Digital platform for the new Danish Ministry of Resilience and Preparedness. The F2 solution was configured for the ministerial work, ready-to-go-live, in 3 weeks.

    In March cBrain announced the successful delivery of the F2 Digital platform for the Danish Energy Agency. F2 has been configured as a grant management solution to support the heat pump subsidy program. At launch the agency said the new solution exceeded all expectations, with almost 70% of all applications being processed fully automatically, and the first 930 citizen applications approved within only minutes of launching the subsidy program.

    In Germany, cBrain continues deploying F2 with the agency that administrates public pensions. Several thousand users have gone live during the first months of the year, and cBrain has won a new tender extending the scope of work.

    In Romania, cBrain’s partner has won a public tender to deliver a new national platform for administrating citizen pensions. F2 is now being configured as the case management and processing kernel, supporting close to 100 different administrative processes and integrating with multiple other systems. cBrain sees the project as a milestone both technically and strategically, demonstrating the power of the F2 Service Builder and the early success of the F2-for-Partner strategy.

    Taking leadership within Paperless Ministry and Environmental Permitting

    The long-term cBrain growth strategy is founded on a vision and a business case to provide standard software for government. Working in close collaboration with Danish government for 15 years, cBrain has invested more than 450,000 hours in developing the F2 platform.

    Today, almost all Danish ministries, and more than 75 Danish authorities in total, use F2 as their digital platform. Internationally, cBrain has delivered F2 to government organizations across five continents. With Denmark ranked number one in the United Nations E-Government Survey for the past eight years, this offers cBrain a strong first-mover advantage and a solid reference position.

    Leveraging the F2 software platform, cBrain is executing an ambitious international growth plan with the aim of becoming a global leader in the fast emerging market for Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software built for government.

    With the 2024 Annual Report, cBrain stated that the transition from custom-built IT solutions to standardized platforms seems to emerge faster than anticipated. This assumption seems to be continuously validated throughout the spring. An increasing number of competitors are repositioning themselves as COTS suppliers, and the White House issued an executive order in April directing the administration to prioritize the procurement of commercial off-the-shelf solutions rather than procuring custom products and developing systems.

    The F2 Paperless Ministry Solution

    cBrain has built a strong home market position in Denmark. This position has been achieved by taking leadership as the supplier of the F2 Paperless Ministry solution, which today is the digital platform for almost all Danish ministries.

    In the autumn 2024 the Danish government announced 3 new ministries, and in January cBrain announced that all 3 new ministries have now chosen F2 as their digital platform. The F2 ministry solution was installed and configured, ready to go live within only 3 weeks. The new ministerial projects demonstrate the power of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) for government solutions and consolidate cBrains unique position in the Danish market.

    Building from the paperless ministry leadership position, cBrain has successfully been able to expand outside the ministerial solution niche into the broad Danish government market. Today serving more than 75 Danish government organizations with a large catalog of citizen-facing solutions, from tax solutions and auditing to grants management, inspections, licensing, and family affairs.

    A key pillar of the expanded growth strategy is to replicate the Danish success by establishing bridgeheads in new international markets, based on a focused, vertical go-to-market approach centered around the Paperless Ministry offering. The ultimate goal is to achieve global niche leadership, thereby securing a strong foundation for future growth.

    cBrain is currently testing and validating the new strategic Paperless Ministry initiative, with market initiatives in Europe and Africa.

    In Europe, cBrain is still working to establish contacts with ministries in selected countries. In Africa, the initial market activities have led to a pilot project, where the Danish Paperless Ministry solution was configured and made ready to go live for a Kenyan ministry in just 10 weeks.

    cBrain is now developing a go-to-market plan for the African region, working closely with Danish embassies in Africa and aligning with the UNDP Digital Offer for Africa strategy. This builds on the partnership with UNDP announced in November 2024. cBrain sees the African Paperless Ministry solution, leveraging Danish government experience, as a unique tool to help African governments achieve fast digital transformation.

    Environmental Permitting

    As a second pillar of its expanded growth strategy, and in parallel with the Paperless Ministry initiative, cBrain has launched an ambitious initiative to position the F2 Environmental Permitting solution as a strategic niche offering, aiming to take a leading international market position.

    The importance of environmental assessment and permitting is growing worldwide. Government review and permitting processes are required for many infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, mines, factories, and power plants. In April 2025, the White House issued an executive order stating that executive departments and agencies shall make maximum use of technology in environmental review and permitting processes for infrastructure projects of all kinds.

    In close collaboration with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), cBrain has developed an F2 based Environmental Permitting solution that eliminates the use of paper-based applications and accelerates case processing time and quality.

    In July 2024, the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) issued a report to Congress that assesses and recommends technologies to improve environmental reviews and permitting processes. In this report, the cBrain F2 Platform is highlighted as a successful process and AI tool for environmental permitting.

    cBrain therefore views environmental permitting as a potential niche entry point into the U.S. market, at both the federal and state levels, supporting its decision to invest in this area as the second pillar of its expanded growth strategy.

    cBrain maintains its financial guidance for 2025

    cBrain has provided financial guidance for the year, with an expected revenue growth of 10-15% and EBT (Earnings Before Tax) of 18-23%. cBrain maintains its financial guidance for 2025.

    The allocation of leadership and delivery resources to support the new niche initiatives may temporarily slow current activities. However, the expanded growth strategy is expected to drive new business and accelerate overall growth over time. Depending on the pace of success, executing the expanded growth strategy therefore introduces uncertainty to the 2025 revenue outlook, both on the upside and downside.

    In the 2025 budget cBrain has allocated extra one-time costs to market expansion of approximately 4 million Euro to support the revised strategy. These costs are fully included in the financial outlook for 2025 but are conditional on the validation to ensure disciplined growth.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Almost Zion: Remembering a short-lived Jewish state in New York

    At dawn on Sept. 15, 1825, a burst of cannon fire shook the ramshackle buildings of Buffalo, New York. Families raced down the main street to witness a grand ceremony, following a parade of soldiers, clergymen, Freemasons, musicians and Seneca tribesmen, including their venerable chief, Red Jacket. All surged toward St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the frontier town’s only grand edifice.

    Inside, a crowd of Christians, Jews and Native Americans were already packed together to witness the founding of Ararat, a tract of land on nearby Grand Island that was intended to be the first autonomous Jewish city-state in almost 1,800 years.

    Ararat’s 400-pound cornerstone, engraved with a central Jewish tenet of faith from the Bible’s Book of Deuteronomy, rested inside the church. When the swell of the organ died down, former diplomat, political power broker and playwright Mordecai Manuel Noah – the man who had dreamed up Ararat – rose to his feet.

    Today, this marker is one of the few surviving signs of the proposed settlement.

    Described as a “stout … gentleman, with sandy hair, a large Roman nose, and … red whiskers,” Noah had draped himself for the ceremony in fur-trimmed robes borrowed from a theater. He triumphantly announced the reestablishment of “the Government of the Jewish Nation … under the auspices and protection of the constitution and laws of the United States of America.”

    Noah also welcomed Native Americans, whom he – like many Americans at the time – mistakenly believed were “the descendants of the lost tribes of Israel.” In addition, he granted equal “rights and religious privileges” to the “black Jews of India and Africa,” disclosing a rare-for-his-time sensitivity toward Jews of color.

    But Noah’s utopian ark sank with barely a trace. Not a single Jew heeded his call to settle Ararat. Noah himself abandoned ship when his calls for a Jewish republic were rebuffed by religious leaders. All that he left behind was the cornerstone.

    As a scholar who scours archives to trace connections between literature and history, I’ve seen how Noah’s efforts to found a Jewish statelet have fascinated students of both American and Zionist history.

    Noah was only the first of many modern thinkers to propose establishing Jewish territories far from the biblical land of Israel. In the 20th century, organizations seeking a humanitarian solution to Jewish persecution considered carving out enclaves the world over, including lands in today’s Kenya, Angola, Madagascar, Tasmania and Suriname.

    ‘City of refuge’

    Noah wielded considerable influence in early 19th-century America through his roles as a political party boss, helming various daily newspapers, and as a popular playwright. But he was also a marginalized outsider at a time when there were fewer than 500 Jews in Manhattan, the young republic’s largest city.

    Noah used his press pulpit to demand equality for Jews, even proposing himself as a presidential candidate. He remained one of few high-profile American Jews throughout his life, urging other citizens to acknowledge that one’s faith and patriotism need never be at odds. Yet antisemitic slurs dogged him throughout his career.

    After witnessing the persecution of Jews in Europe during his diplomatic travels, Noah hoped Ararat would be a territorial solution to religious oppression.

    In some ways, his efforts hearkened back to the origins of America itself. Instead of the Mayflower, Noah invoked the symbolic ark of his biblical namesake – “Ararat” is the biblical name of the mountain where the ark came to a rest after the flood. In the role of the Puritans, he cast European Jewry. And instead of Plymouth Rock, he landed on Grand Island. As the cornerstone of Ararat proclaimed, the settlement was to be a “city of refuge for the Jews” – one that Noah hoped would grow to become a state and be admitted to the American republic.

    In his speeches, Noah imagined that Ararat would allow European Jews to escape persecution while simultaneously fulfilling America’s need for immigration, industry and financial capital. He also believed that his purchase of 2,555 acres of Grand Island would prove a lucrative personal investment: The recently completed Erie Canal, he reasoned, would make Buffalo a major port.

    Failure to launch

    At the time of Noah’s proposal, the Zionist movement – the modern political program for Jewish national self-determination – had not yet coalesced. Most Jews at the time believed that founding a Jewish state in the land of Israel was a pipe dream, or worse. God had expelled their ancestors from the Holy Land in 70 C.E., they believed, so taking matters into their own hands and rebuilding a Jewish state there would be blasphemy.

    Noah hoped to sidestep those theological objections by locating a Jewish polity in the promised land of America, not the biblical promised land. Nonetheless, Jewish leaders dismissed his vision as contrary to God’s will. The chief rabbis of England and France publicly condemned Noah’s plan, and the September 1825 ceremony in Buffalo proved Ararat’s high point.

    Though ridiculed in the press for Ararat’s failure, Noah took a philosophical view:

    I … stand as the pioneer of the great work, leaving others to complete it. … When sneers and mockery shall have had their day … then my motives and objects will have been duly estimated and rewarded.“

    Birth of Zionism

    Noah quickly resumed his career as a journalist and emerged as a kind of ambassador, penning articles and delivering speeches that linked Jewish and Christian America. To Christians, he explained Jewish practices. To his brethren, he demonstrated the fundamental compatibility between the ideals of Judaism and the United States, assuring them that America “is the country which the Almighty has blessed,” a land in which Jews “may repose in safety and happiness.”

    Yet Noah never abandoned his plans for Jewish self-government and ultimately advocated national repatriation to areas of Palestine, then under Ottoman control. In 1845 he published a short book, “Discourse on the Restoration of the Jews.” A young journalist whom he had befriended, Edgar Allan Poe, praised Noah’s proposal for a Jewish return to the biblical land of Israel as “extraordinary [and] full of novel and cogent thought.”

    Noah did not live to see his dreams fulfilled. After his death in March 1851, nearly 50 years passed before another playwright and journalist resurrected the idea of Jewish political autonomy: Theodor Herzl.

    Herzl’s vision laid the groundwork for the establishment of the state of Israel. Today, he is considered the father of Zionism, with his image paraded on Israeli Independence Day.

    Paradoxically, Noah is remembered today thanks only to the spectacular failure of his American Zion.

    Mark Sarkisian is a partner in the San Francisco office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. He is a licensed professional engineer and structural engineer in 31 states. In 2021, Sarkisian was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, and is a member of the University of Connecticut Academy of Distinguished Engineers. He received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from UConn in 1983, and his master’s degree in structural engineering from Lehigh University. Sarkisian’s career focuses on developing innovative structural engineering solutions for over 100 major building projects around the world, including the Jin Mao Tower in China and the Al Hamra Fidrous Tower in Kuwait, both over 1,300 feet[1]tall. Sarkisian holds 10 U.S. patents and five international patents. Sarkisian has authored over 150 technical papers related to the design of building structures, and in 2012 completed his first book, “Designing Tall Buildings – Structure as Architecture.” He teaches integrated studio design courses focused on collaborative design opportunities at the University of California, Berkeley; California College of the Arts; Stanford University; California Polytechnic State University; Northeastern University; North Carolina State University; and the Pratt Institute.

    Dr. Joan Y. Reede was appointed as Harvard Medical School’s (HMS) first Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership in January of 2002, and has been responsible for the development and management of a comprehensive program that has provided leadership, guidance, and support to promote the increased recruitment, retention, and advancement of diverse faculty, particularly individuals from groups underrepresented in medicine. This charge includes oversight of all diversity activities at HMS as they relate to faculty, trainees, students, and staff. Reede is a graduate of Brown University and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She completed a pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and a fellowship in child psychiatry at Boston Children’s Hospital. She holds an MPH and an MS in Health Policy Management from Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, and an MBA from Boston University. Reede created and developed more than 20 programs at HMS that aim to address pathway and leadership issues for minorities and women who are interested in careers in medicine, academic and scientific research, and the health care professions. At a national level, Reede’s advice and expertise is highly sought after among several committees and councils, such as being appointed to the Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Minority Health and serving on the Board of Governors for the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center. She also has many affiliations, including the Task Force for the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, CTSA Women in CTR Interest Group of the NIH, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science STEM Education Review Committee.

    Rich Eldh was born in the village of Ardsley, New York, and moved homes five times between the ages of 5 and 15. He attended Staples High School in Westport, graduating as a three-sport athlete and an all-state football player. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Connecticut. In what would have been his junior year, 1978–1979, he took a leave of absence to travel abroad, living in Kempten, Germany, in Bavaria. There, he worked at Dixie Union, a manufacturing company, as a computer programmer, where he developed new automation software for the finance department. This experience in Germany highlighted the significant impact computing technology would have on business. Motivated by this realization, he decided to pursue a career in the computer industry. Upon returning to the University of Connecticut for his final two years, he majored in finance at the School of Business and graduated in 1981 with a degree in Finance. He first joined a manufacturing firm implementing automation software, then moved to Four Phase Systems, a Motorola company, selling data entry systems. Later, he joined Hewlett-Packard, specializing in manufacturing systems and automation. It was at HP that he met his wife; they married and started a family. After working for two very large corporations, Rich joined a startup called Gartner Group in Stamford. He was the 100th employee, and in ten years, the company grew from $9 million in revenue to just under $1 billion with 4,500 employees. Today, Gartner boasts a market cap of $38 billion with 21,000 employees. These early career highlights led Rich to co-found Sirius Decisions, which became a leader in high-performance go-to[1]market research and benchmarking. Headquartered in Wilton, Sirius Decisions grew to 400 employees with private equity backing and offices worldwide. The company was eventually monetized for approximately $300 million through a sale to a public company in Boston. Throughout his career, he has had the honor of working with associates and clients across more than 50 countries. Alongside his career, Rich and his wife Joyce raised two daughters and a son. They have each found success in the medical field, the fashion world, and the blockchain and crypto industry, respectively.

    Maggie Mitchell Salem joined IRIS as Executive Director in January 2024. Throughout her nearly 30-year career, Maggie has managed diverse teams focused on civic education, intercultural dialogue, social and political rights, and forced displacement. She arrived in Connecticut following three years leading the National Democratic Institute’s democratic governance program in Tunisia. Given the exponential increase in the number of refugees, humanitarian parolees, and other immigrants that IRIS assists, Maggie has focused on organizational structure, systems, and policies that create a strong foundation for the organization’s continued growth. Her previous experience at Global Refuge (formerly Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Services) and Fugees Academy have underscored the importance of collaborative, communicative leadership and management. For more than a decade, she was the founding executive director of Qatar Foundation International and expanded Arabic language and culture education to public K-12 schools across the U.S., UK, and Germany. As the Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), she expanded or created new programs in Jordan, Iran, and Iraq. Maggie started up and led the Middle East Institute’s Communications Department from 2001-2004. She also served as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer in Mumbai and Tel Aviv, and as staff on the Executive Secretariat of Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Maggie was a Fulbright Scholar in Syria while studying for her Masters in Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University. She received a bachelor’s degree in political science and psychology from Johns Hopkins University. She has two sons and two daughters. She lives with her six dogs and two cats in East Haddam.

    Bachelor of General Studies (Saturday, May 10, 2 p.m. at Student Union Theater): Daniel Mercier ‘95

    Daniel Mercier graduated from the Bachelor of General Studies program in 1995 with a focus in Visual Communications. After serving as a Graphics Specialist for a few years, Mercier returned to UConn in 1998 as a Media Producer. In 2001, he transitioned to the role of Instructional Developer in the Instructional Design and Development Department. After completing a Master of Arts in Educational Technology in 2003, Mercier became Manager of Instructional Design and Development and ultimately served as Assistant Director and Director of the Institute of Teaching and Learning. In 2015, he took on the role of Director, Instructional Design, in the Center for Pedagogical Innovation at Wesleyan University. In 2017, Mercier returned to UConn as the Director of Academic Affairs at the Avery Point Campus of the University of Connecticut. Throughout his 30-plus-year career, Mercier has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the development of instructional tools, to help faculty utilize technologies to reach our students. In his work, he has supported faculty, staff and students across the higher education landscape. His commitment to the University of Connecticut spans nearly 25 years. In his current position, he recruits faculty, oversees academic advising and other academic support programs, and develops partnerships between the Avery Point campus and other academic entities within and outside UConn. These partnerships include the support of students in the Bachelor of General Studies Program.

    College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (Saturday, May 10, 6 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion): Rodney Butler ’99 (BUS)

    Rodney A. Butler is the Chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation (MPTN) since January 2010. Butler’s service on Tribal Council began in 2004, and after one year, he was appointed Tribal Council Treasurer; a position he held through 2009. During his tenure, Butler chaired the Tribe’s Finance, Housing, and Judicial Committees, the MPTN Utility Authority, and served as an Interim CEO for Foxwoods Resort Casino. Butler earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the University of Connecticut where he played Defensive Back for the UConn Huskies football team. Prior to Tribal Council, Butler worked in the finance department at Foxwoods Resort Casino. He later became Chairman of the Tribal Business Advisory Board; an executive body responsible for overseeing the Tribe’s non-gaming businesses and commercial properties. Butler was actively involved in multiple resort expansions at Foxwoods, as well as community development initiatives on the Reservation, the establishment of the Mashantucket (Western) Pequot Tribe Endowment Trust, and the legalization of Sports Betting and iGaming in the state of Connecticut. He was also a participant in Harvard Business School’s program “Leading People and Investing to Build Sustainable Communities.” He is a regular speaker on national panels related to Native American issues. Butler presently serves on the Board of Directors for Mashantucket Pequot Interactive and is on the board of Foxwoods El San Juan Casino. He also serves as the President of Native American Finance Officers Association (NAFOA), as Alternate Vice President for the National Congress of American Indians, and on the boards for the United South and Eastern Tribes, Indian Gaming Association, American Gaming Association, the Mystic Aquarium, and the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. He is the 2019 recipient of the Citizen of the Year award from the Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce, and the National Indian Gaming Association’s John Kieffer Sovereignty Award. In 2018, he received the St. Edmund’s Medal of Honor Award from the Enders Island Retreat Center. In 2017, Butler was appointed “Tribal Leader of the Year” by the NAFOA. As Chairman, Butler’s primary focus is to ensure long-term stability for the Tribe’s citizens, government, and business enterprises.

    School of Fine Arts (Saturday, May 10, 6 p.m. at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts): Jacob G. Padrón

    Jacob G. Padrón is the Artistic Director of Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven. He is also the Founder and Artistic Director of The Sol Project, a national theater initiative that works in partnership with leading theater companies to amplify the voices of Latino playwrights in New York City and beyond. Padrón has held senior-level artistic positions at theater companies across the country. He was the Senior Line Producer at The Public Theater where he worked on new plays, new musicals, Shakespeare in the Park, and Public Works. He was formerly the Producer at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago where he supported the artistic programming in the Garage – Steppenwolf’s dedicated space for new work, new artists, and new audiences. From 2008 to 2011, he was an Associate Producer at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival where he was instrumental in producing all shows in the 11-play repertory. Under the guidance of his late mentor Diane Rodriguez, he served as the producer of Suzan-Lori Parks’ “365 Days/365 Plays” for Center Theatre Group, a collaboration that included over 50 theater companies to launch Festival 365 in Los Angeles. He is a co-founder of the Artist Anti-Racism Coalition, a grassroots movement committed to dismantling structural racism within the Off-Broadway community. Jacob is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University (B.A.) and David Geffen School of Drama (M.F.A.). His first artistic home was El Teatro Campesino located in San Juan Bautista, California.

    Maureen Ahern is an Executive Leadership Coach on her third career whose journey began in the same classrooms as today’s graduates. A proud Husky who earned both a Bachelors and a Masters, Maureen’s connection to UConn runs deep. For over 10 years, she returned to UConn Stamford each week as an Adjunct Professor, teaching Interpersonal Communications and Public Speaking after her corporate day job in New York, driven by her belief that becoming a great communicator gives you the power and confidence to take meaningful action to shape your future. Maureen started as a Sales Executive at The Associated Press and quickly rose to lead the Satellite Networks division before transitioning to Standard and Poor’s Comstock. At S&P she led many different departments as Director of Operations, VP of US Sales and Managing Director for Asian and South American markets, building successful international relationships while traveling the world. She was part of the management team that sold Comstock to IDC and then pivoted from corporate into the digital world, as Partner and COO of momAgenda, where she helped build a thriving e-commerce company. Drawing on her teaching background, leadership experience and desire to coach and mentor others, Maureen completed her leadership coaching certification at Georgetown University’s Transformational Leadership Institute. Today as Founder of Ahern Leadership Coaching and Consulting, Maureen partners with C-suite executives and emerging leaders across industries, facilitating leadership development through one-on-one coaching, team coaching, and specialized training and leadership development workshops. Her coaching philosophy – described by clients as “tough but loving”-centers on her belief that leaders aren’t born, they are made and that everyone has leadership capacity waiting to be unlocked through awareness, action and courage. Maureen was a mentor with the Freshman Founders Program at the Werth Institute at UConn Stamford, in addition to her volunteer work with CT NEXT and Startup Westport as a business mentor.     Neag School of Education (Sunday, May 11, 9 a.m. at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts): Suzanne M. Wilson

    Suzanne M. Wilson is the Neag Endowed Professor of Teacher Education at the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education, where she also serves as a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her undergraduate degree is in history and American studies from Brown University; she also has an M.S. in statistics and a Ph.D. in psychological studies in education from Stanford University. She was a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University, where she served on the faculty for 26 years. Wilson also served as the first director of the Teacher Assessment Project, which developed prototype assessments for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Wilson is a committed teacher, having taught undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral classes in educational policy, teacher learning, and research methods. She has directed 36 dissertations and served as a committee member for another 45. Wilson serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards. She was elected to the National Academy of Education in 2013 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2022. Wilson has written on teacher knowledge, qualitative methods, curriculum reform, educational policy, and teacher preparation and professional development. She has published in Science, American Educator, American Educational Research Journal, Educational Researcher, Review of Educational Research, Elementary School Journal, Teaching and Teacher Education, Journal of Teacher Education, Phi Delta Kappa, and Teaching Education. She is the author of “California Dreaming: Reforming Mathematics Education” (Yale, 2003) and editor of Lee Shulman’s collection of essays, “Wisdom of Practice: Essays on Teaching, Learning, and Learning to Teach” (Jossey-Bass, 2004). She is currently working on a collection of essays entitled, “Why Teach?”

    Joe La Puma serves as SVP of Content Strategy at Complex NTWRK and hosts Complex’s Sneaker Shopping, the world’s No. 1 sneaker show, which has garnered over 1 billion views on YouTube. He has been at the forefront of sneaker and street culture at Complex for the past 15 years. La Puma started his journalism career writing for The Daily Campus and was voted “Rookie of the Year” by fellow staffers. After graduating from UConn in 2005 with a degree in Journalism, he returned to Bay Shore to manage The Finish Line—where he previously worked in high school—while contributing articles to both local and global publications like Newsday and Hypebeast.com. In 2006, La Puma landed an internship at Complex magazine, a pop culture publication specializing in convergence culture through hip-hop, sneakers, and fashion. La Puma has written more cover stories (21) than any other writer in Complex history, including profiles on Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and Kid Cudi. La Puma is also a published author of the book “Complex Presents: Sneaker of the Year: The Best Since ’85.” In his current SVP role, La Puma has led Complex to over 200% growth in audience and engagement. In 2014, Complex debuted the YouTube show Sneaker Shopping, a series that La Puma created and hosts to this day. Over the past decade of Sneaker Shopping, La Puma has interviewed icons like Eminem, Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Hart, Mark Wahlberg, Billie Eilish, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, and conducted one of the only lifestyle interviews with former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2020 election cycle. In 2024, La Puma was inducted into the Bay Shore High School Hall of Fame, a group that includes only 79 members since the school opened in 1893. La Puma currently lives in Brooklyn, and takes half-days at work when he can during UConn Basketball March Madness runs.

    School of Pharmacy – Doctor of Pharmacy (Sunday, May 11, 1:30 p.m. at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts): JoAnn Trejo

    JoAnn Trejo, Ph.D., MBA is professor of pharmacology and senior assistant Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences Faculty Affairs at the University of California (UC) San Diego. She completed her undergraduate degree at UC Davis, earned her Ph.D. and MBA at UC San Diego and completed postdoctoral training at UC San Francisco. Trejo is a basic science researcher with expertise in cell signaling in the context of vascular inflammation and cancer. Her research has been published in more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and she is a recipient of a NIH R35 Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA) and the American Heart Association Established Investigator Award. Trejo is an outstanding educator, mentor and a leader actively engaged in initiatives aimed at enhancing excellence in science and pharmacology. She is the director of five NIH-supported training programs including the UC San Diego IRACDA Postdoctoral Scholars Program, FIRST Program and three early career faculty development programs. Trejo served as an elected member of the leadership Council for the ASCB and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and is a current member of the scientific advisory boards for Septerna and Versiti. She has also served on multiple NIH Study Sections, the NCI Board of Scientific Counselors for Basic Sciences, and Blavatnik, HHMI and Chan Zuckerberg foundation review panels. Trejo is a current member of the NIGMS Advisory Council. She is the Associate Editor for Molecular Biology of the Cell and is an editorial board member for Proceedings National Academy of Sciences Nexus, Journal of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. Trejo is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) Fellow and 100 Inspiring Hispanic / Latinx Scientists and was recently elected honorary fellow of the British Pharmacological Society.

    Joe Honcz is a distinguished expert in managed care and market access, boasting a robust 25-year career that spans significant sectors of the health care industry. Early in his career, he played a pivotal role in leading teams for the launch of Medicare Part D, followed by instrumental involvement in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act while at Anthem BCBS and Aetna. Since 2020, Joe has leveraged his profound understanding of managed care to deliver strategic market access insights, empowering over 20 biotech and pharmaceutical clients to effectively navigate complex market dynamics. His contributions have been crucial in the successful launch of innovative products in both traditional and rare/orphan disease categories. As a “pharmacy futurist,” he continues to drive innovation and shape market access strategies at Petauri Health, supporting the emerging pharmaceutical and health tech industries. His exceptional ability to anticipate industry trends has consistently provided clients with strategic advantages, enabling them to stay ahead of competitors with foresight and precision. Beyond his professional endeavors, Joe is actively involved at Yale Ventures as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence and at the University of Connecticut Technology Commercialization Services in the same capacity.     The Graduate School – Masters Ceremony (Monday, May 12, 9 a.m. at Gampel Pavilion): Manasse Mbonye ’95 Ph.D.

    Manasse Mbonye is a Founding Fellow of the Rwanda Academy of Sciences (RAS) and its current President. He is also the Group Leader and Professor, Rwanda Astrophysics Space and Climate Sciences Research Group (RASCSRG) at the University of Rwanda and a member of the national Science Advisory Group (SAG). By Training, Mbonye is a theoretical Astrophysicist and Cosmologist. He completed his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in 1995. Mbonye has taught Physics at various institutions including UConn, the University of Michigan, and RIT. He has also worked at NASA (Goddard Space Flight Center). In 2012, Mbonye returned to Africa. Since then, his appointments have included, Provost (later) Ag Rector (National University of Rwanda), the first Principal (University of Rwanda, College of Science and Technology), and Executive Secretary (Rwanda’s National Council for Science and Technology, (NCST)). During Mbonye’s tenure, NCST instituted a major review of Rwanda’s Science, Technology, Research and Innovation (STRI) policy. Further, the National Research and Innovation Agenda (NRIA) was constructed, along with its implementation enabler, the National Research and Innovation Fund (NRIF) framework. Rwanda launched the NRIF in June 2018. Mbonye has served on the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTCO) Board of Directors as its Rapporteur (2017-2018). He has also been Chairman of the Rwanda Energy Group (REG) (2015-2018), Rwanda’s sole electric energy production source and utility company. Prof. Mbonye continues to do research and supervise students, at the University of Rwanda.

     

    UConn Health (Monday, May 12, 1 p.m. at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts): Manisha Juthani

    Dr. Manisha Juthani, is the Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH). Juthani is the first Indian American to serve as a commissioner in the State of Connecticut. She served as professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine through September 2024 and currently serves as an adjunct professor of medicine. She served as Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program from 2012 to 2021. Juthani received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and M.D. from Cornell University Medical College, completed Internal Medicine residency training at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell campus, and served as chief resident at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She came to Connecticut in 2002 as an Infectious Diseases fellow at Yale School of Medicine. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Juthani was a leader in the COVID response at Yale which led to her appointment as Commissioner of CT DPH in 2021. In the early days of the pandemic, she was a voice to help educate the public in both local and national media outlets, a role she was able to expand in her role as Commissioner. Upon joining CT DPH, she helped guide Connecticut out of the pandemic and worked to revitalize areas of public health, such as gun violence, maternal health, opioid use, and sexually transmitted diseases, that were exacerbated during the pandemic. As she continues in her role as DPH Commissioner, Juthani has shifted her core vision to “Preserve and Protect Core Public Health Principles and Services.” As Connecticut is presented with new public health challenges, she remains committed to preserving public health achievements made over the years, including improvements in regulatory oversight in health care, drinking water, and environmental health which includes food safety. It is more important than ever to highlight the importance of vaccines, control of infectious diseases, road safety, and healthier mothers and babies. Clear, accurate communication about public health risks is vital to her mission. She continues to advocate for health as a human right which is the core vision of CT DPH. Juthani is on the Board of Directors of UConn Health.

    The Graduate School – Doctoral Ceremony (Monday, May 12, 6 p.m. at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts): Sethuraman Panchanathan

    Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan is a computer scientist and engineer who served as the 15th director of the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2020 until 2025. Panchanathan was nominated to by the president in 2019 and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on June 18, 2020. NSF is a $9.06 billion independent federal agency, and the only government agency charged with advancing all fields of scientific discovery, technological innovation and science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

    Panchanathan previously served as the executive vice president of the Arizona State University (ASU) Knowledge Enterprise, where he was also chief research and innovation officer. He was also the founder and director of the Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing at ASU. Under his leadership, the university increased research performance fivefold, earning recognition as the fastest growing and most innovative research university in the U.S.

    Prior to joining NSF, Panchanathan was appointed by the president to serve on the National Science Board, where he was a chair of the Committee on Strategy and a member of the External Engagement and National Science and Engineering Policy committees. Additionally, he was chair of the Council on Research of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and co-chair of the Extreme Innovation Taskforce of the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils. Arizona’s governor appointed Panchanathan as senior advisor for science and technology in 2018. He was the editor-in-chief of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) MultiMedia magazine and editor and associate editor of several international journals.

    For his scientific contributions, Panchanathan has received numerous awards, including honorary doctorates from prestigious universities, distinguished alumni awards, the Governor’s Innovator of the Year for Academia Award, the Washington Academy of Sciences Distinguished Career Award and the IEEE-USA Public Service Award.

    Panchanathan is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, where he also served as vice president for strategic initiatives. He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Association for Computing Machinery, IEEE and the Society of Optical Engineering.

    School of Law (Sunday, May 18, 10:30 a.m. at UConn School of Law): Mayor Arunan Arulampalam

    The son of Sri Lankan refugees, Arunan Arulampalam was born in Zimbabwe and made a home and a family in Hartford after graduate school. Prior to being elected mayor of Hartford in November 2023, he served as CEO of the Hartford Land Bank, where he developed a first-in-the-nation program to train Hartford residents to become local developers and tackle blight in their city. Arulampalam served in Governor Ned Lamont’s administration as Deputy Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. Before that, he was a lawyer at the downtown firm Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. Arulampalam also served on the Board of the Hartford Public Library, the House of Bread, and on the Hartford Redevelopment Authority. He earned his BA in International Studies from Emory University and his JD from Quinnipiac University School of Law.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warn parents against unethical baby milk advertising in South Africa

    The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are today launching a “Babies Before Bottom Lines” manifesto to warn parents in South Africa against false and unethical baby milk advertising. The manifesto was posted online today to call out “predatory and pervasive practices” and has been backed and shared by prominent parenting influencers around the country. 

    WHO and UNICEF are jointly calling the attention of parents and caregivers to the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and its related information sources. The code provides guidelines on stricter regulation of marketing of breastmilk substitutes, to curb harmful effects on babies’ short- and long-term health. 

    WHO’s Country Representative in South Africa, Shenaaz El-Halabi, says: “False, incomplete, misleading health and nutrition claims by formula companies should stop now. The WHO calls on formula milk companies to stop presenting incomplete scientific evidence and inferring unsupported health outcomes.”

    WHO and UNICEF are specifically calling on local regulators to update Regulations Relating to Foodstuffs for Infants and Young Children (aka R991) to include other advertising techniques and digital marketing practices that have become prevalent in the past few years since the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes of 1981 and local Regulation R991 of 2012 were drafted. Some popular social media platforms, whose algorithms can target specific consumers with specific messages at specific times, were still in their infancy or did not yet exist in 2012. Of particular concern is that parents are often targeted with information that blurs the lines between nutritional facts and promotional pseudo-science and emotional manipulation when they are at their most vulnerable.    

    The pseudo-scientific health claims made by formula companies discourage mothers from breastfeeding, which should always be a first choice as breastmilk is the most complete and healthiest milk for babies. In addition, widespread evidence exists that women have internalised doubts about the quality and quantity of their breastmilk, mirroring the themes and messaging of formula milk marketing campaigns.     

    In line with their multi-country study on the impacts of marketing breastmilk substitutes, WHO and UNICEF warn that “inappropriate promotion of breastmilk substitutes negatively impacts breastfeeding practices, and that advertisers are promoting a false choice between formula feeding and breastfeeding, without offering informed choice to parents about the real differences between breastmilk and various brands of formula”.

    UNICEF South Africa Representative, Christine Muhigana, notes that: “Government and civil society partners are to be commended for their efforts to address this concerning issue. It is evident that formula milk companies continue to actively target health professionals to convince them to prescribe formula. This Manifesto is part of a broader effort to address these unfair practices so that mothers and caregivers are fully aware of unethical marketing practices.”

    Cross promotion, also known as “brand extension” which is a marketing practice whereby one product is used to advertise another product by using similar branding, packaging and labelling (including but not limited to similar colours, design, font types, mascots and logos) has become a common practice by the bay formula companies.

    WHO and UNICEF have uncovered systematic and unethical marketing strategies by the US $55 billion infant formula industry, finding it uses the “infant formula industry uses pervasive, personalised and powerful methods to target parents when they are at their most vulnerable in the early days of their new babies life, and manipulate scientific claims to promote their products whilst undermining parents’ confidence”.

    Life is in full swing at the Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University: the university was recently visited by an unusual guest — Arina Rylova, a representative of the popular Telegram channel “Adventures of Foreigners in Russia.” The meeting within the university walls turned into a real brainstorming session: activists of student organizations supervising the adaptation of foreign guests shared their experiences, and the guest shared success stories and plans for the future.

    Imagine: a student from Nigeria comes to Russia, gets lost in a pile of documents, doesn’t know where to run. We become his guides, — the channel’s representative begins the presentation.     Ms Mahanga is a proud young Wiradjuri and Tongan woman. She performs as a solo vocalist. She is also a youth advocate, including the ACT Student Representative at the National School Reform Agreement Ministerial Reference Group. She was involved with The Mindyigari Centre for Excellence at Erindale College and the Gugan Gulwan Youth Association.

    Group Achievement Award

    Winner: St Mary MacKillop College

    The Year 12 cohort at St Mary MacKillop College designed the ‘Relay Your Way’ event. This local community initiative celebrates cancer survivorship, honours those we’ve lost, and spurs on the fight against cancer. They raised over $75,000 for the Relay for Life this year, the highest fundraising total for Relay for Life across Australia.
