    The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

         The spokesperson for Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) made the following announcement today (July 25):
     
         Regarding an earlier announcement on Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) confirmed cases in an Orthopaedics and Traumatology ward of PMH, following a contact tracing investigation, one more patient in the ward, an 83-year-old male, was identified as a carrier of VRE. The patient concerned is now being treated in isolation in PMH and is in stable condition.
     
         In addition, regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients confirmed as carriers of Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in a medicine and geriatrics ward of PMH, following a contact tracing investigation, one more patient in the ward, a 59-year-old male, was identified as a carrier of CPE. The asymptomatic patient is now being treated in isolation and is in stable condition.
     
         The hospital will enhance infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the wards concerned. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health for necessary follow-up.

    Welcoming the envoys to their new posts, Xi asked them to convey his best wishes to the leaders and the people of their respective countries, expressing hope that envoys will gain a full and in-depth understanding of China.

    China cherishes its friendship with people across the globe, and stands ready to strengthen all-around cooperation and exchanges with other countries on the basis of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, Xi said.

    Xi pointed out that, at present, China is advancing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts through Chinese modernization, while its economy maintains a steadily improving momentum.

    Amid accelerating global changes and a turbulent international landscape, there is a pressing need more than ever for countries around the world to enhance solidarity and cooperation, embrace a broad vision to rise above estrangement and conflict, and bear in mind the future of all humanity, Xi noted.

    It’s a psychological operation  –  to push out the boundaries of what’s normal and acceptable in our minds so that we will consent to even more horrific abuses in the future.

    It’s a symptom  —  of Zionism, of colonialism, of militarism, of capitalism, of Western supremacism, of empire-building, of propaganda, of ignorance, of apathy, of delusion, of ego.

    It’s a manifestation  —  of violent racist, supremacist and xenophobic belief systems that have always been there but were previously restrained, meeting with the unwholesome nature of alliances that have long been in place but have been aggressively normalised.

    It’s a mirror  —– showing us accurately and impartially who we currently are as a civilisation.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: How to support and strengthen your pelvic floor

    Did you know that around one in two women in the UK will experience symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction at some point in their lives? And for women who engage in high-intensity exercise, that figure rises to 63%.

    The female pelvic floor is a remarkable yet often overlooked structure: a complex “hammock” of muscles and ligaments that stretches from the front of the pelvis to the tailbone.

    These muscles support the bladder, bowel and uterus, wrap around the openings of the urethra, vagina and anus, and work in sync with your diaphragm, abdominal and back muscles to maintain posture, continence and core stability. It’s not an exaggeration to say your pelvic floor is the foundation of your body’s core.

    Throughout a woman’s life, various events can challenge the pelvic floor. Pregnancy, for example, increases the weight of the uterus, placing added pressure on these muscles. The growing baby can cause the abdominal muscles to stretch and separate, naturally increasing the load on the pelvic floor. Childbirth, particularly vaginal delivery, may result in perineal trauma, directly injuring pelvic floor tissues.

    However, contrary to popular belief, pelvic floor problems aren’t only caused by pregnancy and childbirth. In fact, research shows that intense physical activity, even in women who have never been pregnant or given birth, can contribute to dysfunction.

    Exercise is essential for overall health and is often recommended to ease symptoms of menopause and menstruation. But one side effect that’s not talked about enough is the effect that repeated strain, such as heavy lifting or high impact movement, can have on the pelvic floor. The increased intra-abdominal pressure during these activities can gradually weaken the pelvic floor muscles, especially if they’re not trained to cope.

    Pelvic floor dysfunction often results when these muscles aren’t strong enough to match the workload demanded of them, whether from daily life, exercise, or other core muscles. And it’s a growing issue, affecting more women than ever before.

    Common symptoms include leaking urine or faeces when coughing, sneezing or exercising, a dragging or heavy sensation in the lower abdomen or vaginal area, painful sex, changes in bowel habits, and visible bulging in the vaginal area (a sign of prolapse). The emotional toll can also be significant, leading to embarrassment, anxiety, low confidence and a reluctance to stay active – all of which affect quality of life.

    Prevention

    The good news? Help is available and, better yet, pelvic floor dysfunction is often preventable.

    If you’re experiencing symptoms, speak to your GP. You may be referred to a women’s health physiotherapist, available through both the NHS and private services. But whether you’re managing symptoms or hoping to avoid them in the first place, there are practical steps you can take:

    Stay active and maintain a healthy weight

    Drink enough water to encourage healthy bladder function

    Go to the toilet only when your body signals the need; avoid going “just in case”

    Prevent constipation through a high-fibre diet and good bowel habits

    Don’t hold your breath when lifting or exercising

    Most importantly, build strength with regular pelvic floor exercises. Here’s how to do a basic pelvic floor contraction:

    1. Imagine you’re trying to stop yourself passing wind – squeeze and lift the muscles around your back passage.

    2. Then, imagine stopping the flow of urine mid-stream – engage those muscles too.

    3. Now, lift both sets of muscles upwards inside your body, as if pulling them into the vagina.

    4. Hold the contraction for a few seconds, then fully relax. Repeat.

    If you’re just starting, it may be easier to practise while sitting. With time and consistency, you’ll be able to hold contractions for longer and incorporate them into your daily routine, like brushing your teeth or waiting for the kettle to boil.

    Like any muscle, the pelvic floor gets stronger with training, making it more resilient to strain from childbirth, ageing, or strenuous activity. Research shows that a well-conditioned pelvic floor recovers faster from injury.

    So be proud of your pelvic floor. Support it, strengthen it – and don’t forget to do those squeezes.

    The Government of Jersey has launched its 2025 Future Economist Essay Competition for young Islanders with an interest in economics. 

    A paid internship with the Government’s Economic Unit is being offered for the winning candidate, alongside the prestigious Colin Powell Award. 

    The free competition, led by the Department for the Economy, aims to inspire Jersey’s next generation of economists by inviting them to write about the challenges our Island is facing – including trade wars, inflation, and growth. It is open to all students aged 14 to 18 with the right to work in Jersey. 

    The deadline for submission is 21 September 2025 and essays will be judged by an expert panel, including the Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, Deputy Kirsten Morel, and the Government of Jersey’s Chief Economist, Tom Holvey. 

    Deputy Morel said: “Jersey is at a crossroads driven by our demographics, but we can successfully navigate the way forward for the coming decades with the help of young Islanders thinking about our economic future. I hope this competition encourages them to do so.”

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Health chiefs issue measles warning to holidaymakers as cases rise globally

    Parents travelling during school holidays are being advised to check children are protected against measles amid a global rise in cases. 

    With the start of the school holidays, parents and carers in Leeds are being urged to ensure their children have an up-to-date Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, as measles cases rise nationally and internationally.

    The uptake of routine childhood vaccinations has been decreasing over the last ten years, with similar trends observed in West Yorkshire.

    Health chiefs are concerned that low MMR vaccination rates could lead to further cases emerging, particularly given the high numbers of people mixing and travelling during the holidays.  

    Measles is a serious disease which can spread easily among unvaccinated people. Babies, children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are at highest risk.

    The disease can lead to hospitalisation and in rare cases, death. Symptoms typically begin with cold-like signs, such as a high temperature, a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, coughing, and red, sore, watery eyes.

    A few days later, small white spots may appear inside the cheeks and on the back of the lips. This is followed by a rash that usually starts on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body.

    Victoria Eaton, Leeds City Council’s director of public health, said: “As we enter the summer holidays, we want everyone to enjoy the season safely and in good health.

    “This year outbreaks have been seen in several European countries, including France, Italy, Spain and Germany and the World Health Organisation recently reported that Pakistan, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Nigeria currently have among the highest number of measles cases worldwide.

    “These are places where people may be going on holiday or travelling to visit family and friends.

    “Checking your family’s MMR vaccination status is a simple but important step in protecting your loved ones and the wider community.

    “If you’re unsure whether you or your child are fully vaccinated, please contact your GP to check your records and arrange vaccination, especially if you’re planning to travel over the summer break.”

    The MMR vaccine, which is usually given to children around their first birthday and again at 3 years 4 months offers the best protection against measles. Two doses provide long-lasting immunity.

    Councillor Fiona Venner, Leeds City Council’s executive member for equalities, health and wellbeing, said:  “We want everyone to enjoy their holidays but checking your child is fully vaccinated against measles before you go will ensure you and your child are protected and safe.

    “It’s never too late to get the vaccine, even if you have missed a first, or second dose. A non-porcine version of the MMR vaccine is also available – however, you may need to request this from your GP practice ahead of vaccination.

    “If you think you or your child has measles, phone your GP or NHS 111 for advice. To reduce the risk of spreading it to others, please avoid contact with other people. Call ahead first before attending any healthcare settings.”

    A targeted compliance project has successfully raised standards among late-night food and drink providers operating across the Lancaster district.

    Led by Lancaster City Council’s licensing team, the project focused on businesses trading between 11pm and 5am, which is a licensable activity under the Licensing Act 2003.

    Over a six-month period licensing officers carried out evening inspections at 35 licensed premises, including takeaways, food kiosks, and mobile vendors.

    They found:

    • 19 were found to be fully compliant with their licensing conditions
    • 16 required improvement, which were addressed following advice

    A further 12 unlicensed businesses were identified through monitoring of online delivery platforms. All were contacted and required to either obtain a licence or cease late-night trading.

    As a result:

    • Three premises are now fully licensed
    • Seven have restricted their trading hours
    • Two have closed permanently

    Councillor Sally Maddocks, cabinet member with responsibility for corporate services, said: “Projects like this ensure that businesses with late night refreshment licences uphold public safety, prevent nuisance, and operate fairly. It’s good to see so many businesses being fully compliant and others only needing minor improvements.

    “By taking an approach of working with businesses to educate and support them toward compliance, rather than rushing to penalise, we are ensuring that our enforcement activity is both firm and fair.”

    Regular annual checks are planned to ensure businesses maintain high standards. Additional visits will also take place following changes in business ownership.

    The competitive selection of participants in the Presidential Management Training Program has been completed. The training will begin in September 2025 and will help strengthen the human resources potential of the regions of Russia.

    “The presidential program is aimed at training highly qualified personnel for the real sector of the economy in order to solve key problems of the country’s socio-economic development. During the competitive selection, about 2.5 thousand applications were received from 62 subjects of the Russian Federation. More than 1.7 thousand specialists will undergo the educational program,” noted Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Russia Tatyana Ilyushnikova.

    The Presidential Program studies various aspects of enterprise development: financial management, strategic management, marketing, logistics. Participants apply the knowledge they gain when developing their own project, which they defend at the end of their studies.

    This year, 78 leading educational organizations of the country are participating in the implementation of the program. The largest number of participants will be hosted by RANEPA, as well as the Southern Federal University, St. Petersburg State University of Economics, Penza State University and Siberian Federal University.

    The program participants represent 21 sectors of the economy, among which the most widely represented are manufacturing, professional, scientific and technical activities, wholesale and retail trade, and construction.

    Upon successful completion of their studies, graduates will have the opportunity to undergo internships in friendly countries, including China, Egypt, India, Belarus, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

    Kamchatka Krai will present its exposition at the exhibition “Far East Street”, which will be held from September 3 to 9 as part of the tenth, anniversary Eastern Economic Forum.     “80 years ago, ordinary residents of the Kamchatka Region played a decisive role in ending World War II by conquering, as it seemed then, the impregnable islands of the Kuril Ridge. Then 306 Kamchatka residents gave their lives in the fight against Japanese militarism. We will never forget the price of this victory. And the main task that we set for ourselves is not to allow the events of those years to be distorted: every young resident of our region and the country as a whole should know and honor the pages of history that turned the tide of the war. That is why, on the instructions of the President of the Russian Federation, an open-air museum will be opened on Shumshu Island, and young people from all over the country, including Kamchatka guys, will go on a search expedition to the places of glory of our soldiers. The play “Ballad of the Kuril Landing” will be staged in Kamchatka, which will be presented to viewers on August 18,” said Vladimir Solodov, Governor of the Kamchatka Region.

    The exhibition will introduce guests and participants of the EEF-2025 to the unique features of Kamchatka, including its natural beauty.

    “Kamchatka is a unique region, the pearl of our country. It is truly a land of fire and ice. Active volcanoes, geysers, thermal springs form a unique landscape. This is one of the most promising territories of our country for tourism development. New hotels open every year.     A separate zone, “The Power of the Ocean”, will be dedicated to demonstrating the natural and economic potential of Kamchatka as a unique oceanic territory. The big screen will systematize and present such areas as marine logistics, the fishing industry, scientific ocean research, tourism, sea cruises and yachting, and Pacific cuisine.

    In the “Volcano Energy” space, visitors will be able to get acquainted with the region’s potential for implementing projects in the fields of tourism, construction, agriculture, education and science. In the “New Kamchatka Facilities in 360” zone, it will be possible to take a full 3D tour of the Kamchatka Regional Hospital, airport and greenhouse complex.

    The “Specially Protected Natural Areas” area will feature the heroes of the documentary “Fire Fox”.     The 10th Eastern Economic Forum will be held on September 3–6 at the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok.     The summer health campaign continues in the regions of Russia. In the Year of Children’s Leisure, the education system has prepared various leisure formats for schoolchildren: sports and creative events, environmental campaigns, hiking trips, as well as scientific, educational and patriotic projects.

    Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov summed up the results of the work of children’s health camps in June.

    “President Vladimir Putin instructed to pay special attention to the quality and safety of children’s recreation. It is important to provide comfortable and educational recreation to everyone, and, of course, to the children of our heroes – participants of the special military operation. In June 2025, about 40 thousand children’s recreation and health organizations have already accepted about 3 million children, including almost 126 thousand children of SVO participants. In the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland and the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, children’s camps hold patriotic shifts, where children learn about the history of the country and participate in thematic events. The key task is to continue the modernization of the recreation and health infrastructure, including the International Children’s Center “Artek”, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

    In June, more than 800 thousand children who found themselves in difficult life situations and about 28 thousand schoolchildren from the reunited regions rested in children’s camps. At the same time, about 73 thousand students from different regions of Russia rested on the coast of the Black and Azov Seas alone.

    “In the Year of Children’s Recreation in the Education System, dedicated to the anniversaries of the federal children’s centers “Artek”, “Orlyonok” and “Smena”, the summer health campaign will cover about 6 million schoolchildren across the country. To ensure a high level of quality in organizing recreation and health improvement for children, a unified system for training camp counselors has been introduced and a federal program of educational work for all children’s camps has been approved. This allows us to build a holistic approach to raising children in camps, which complements the educational work carried out with children in schools,” said Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov.

    Summer shifts are also actively held in other children’s health camps. In Crimea, for example, there are 370 children’s camps. Particular attention is paid to organizing recreation for children from the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporizhia, Kherson, Kursk and Belgorod regions. It is planned to accept 1.8 thousand children from these regions at the expense of the reserve fund of the Republic of Crimea.

    In addition, in July, shifts with the participation of children from different countries were held in children’s centers subordinate to the Ministry of Education. Thus, the eighth international shift “Artek Gathers Friends” is taking place in the International Children’s Center “Artek”, which united more than 3 thousand children from all regions of Russia and from 66 foreign countries. The shift program includes key topics: the 80th anniversary of Victory, the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland and the 100th anniversary of “Artek”.

    For the first time in 30 years, the All-Russian Children’s Center “Orlyonok” is hosting a group of 25 Cuban schoolchildren and their mentors. The opening ceremony of the international program “Children of the World” was held at the All-Russian Children’s Center “Ocean”. It is attended by children from Russia and 5 friendly countries: the People’s Republic of China, Tajikistan, Mongolia, Laos and Belarus. As part of this program, participants will study the culture of different peoples, the basics of public diplomacy, exchange experiences and work on joint creative projects.

    The program of infrastructure budget and special treasury loans helps to create comfortable living conditions for people and stimulates the development of Russian regions. Thus, thanks to infrastructure projects at the expense of IBC and SKK, almost 31.4 million square meters of housing were put into operation in Russia and about 3.4 trillion rubles of private investment were attracted to the economy, Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin reported.

    “The main goal of the large-scale interdepartmental national project “Infrastructure for Life” is the comprehensive development of populated areas and the creation of high-quality and modern infrastructure for people to live, work and relax. Infrastructure budget and special treasury loans have become effective tools in solving the problems of improving the quality of life of Russians. Thanks to them, new schools, kindergartens, clinics and roads are opened in the regions, utility infrastructure and public transport are updated. This, in turn, contributes to the development of territories and their economic growth. Thus, only thanks to the IBC projects, since 2022, it has been possible to commission about 28.8 million square meters of housing, create 155.3 thousand jobs and attract 3.15 trillion rubles of extra-budgetary funds to the economy. In addition, the SCC program stimulated the commissioning of another 2.6 million square meters of housing and attracted 230.6 billion rubles of private investment. Considering the effectiveness and demand for these mechanisms, on behalf of The President, within the framework of the national project “Infrastructure for Life”, the program continues in the form of treasury infrastructure loans,” said Marat Khusnullin.

    According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the largest volume of housing thanks to infrastructure projects financed by budget loans was put into operation in the Republic of Tatarstan – 4.4 million sq. m, St. Petersburg– 3.3 million sq. m, Moscow region – 2.6 million sq. m, Sverdlovsk region – 2.5 million sq. m and Moscow – 1.3 million sq. m.

    The IBC and SKK program is supervised by the Russian Ministry of Construction, and the operator is the public-law company Territorial Development Fund. Such loans are issued to regions at 3% per annum for a period of up to 15 years.

    “Infrastructure budget and special treasury loans are an accessible financial mechanism through which socially significant projects are implemented. This work, among other things, has allowed for tax and non-tax budget revenues in the amount of 250.7 billion rubles. The Territorial Development Fund, as an operator, provides support to regions – it helps in preparing applications for financial assistance, in launching the necessary processes, and monitors the projects themselves. We will also take part in monitoring the implementation of projects through treasury infrastructure loans,” said Vasily Kupyzin, CEO of the Territorial Development Fund.

    Currently, applications from regions for financing projects within the framework of treasury infrastructure loans are being accepted. The regions mainly plan to use these funds for the modernization of housing and communal services, as well as the implementation of social, road transport, and tourism infrastructure projects.

    Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak held a meeting on issues of generating construction in the south of Russia in the context of growing economic needs.

    The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Federal Antimonopoly Service, the authorities of the Republic of Crimea and Krasnodar Krai, PJSC Gazprom, energy companies, and industry associations.

    Representatives of the Ministry of Energy, Gazprom, generating companies, authorities of the Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Crimea reported to the Deputy Prime Minister on the current status of providing territory and gas infrastructure for the construction of new generating facilities in the south of Russia.

    We are talking about the construction of thermal power plants in the Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Crimea with a total capacity of 2.25 GW.

    According to the Ministry of Energy, the demand for new generation gas in the south of Russia will be around 4 billion cubic meters per year.

    At the same time, according to the Ministry of Energy and the authorities of the Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Crimea, six out of seven generating facilities have currently been provided with land plots for the construction of generating facilities.

    A representative of PAO Gazprom reported that in order to ensure the declared volume of gas, it will be necessary to expand the capacity of two gas pipelines.

    Alexander Novak instructed the Ministry of Energy, together with generating companies, Gazprom and regional authorities, to promptly develop a comprehensive plan and schedule for the construction of new generating facilities in the south of Russia, providing for the gasification of these facilities and the provision of land plots for them, with the establishment of deadlines and responsible contractors.

    Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has appointed Vladimir Komarov as head of the Department of Expertise and Planning of the Government of Russia. The order to this effect has been signed.

    Vladimir Komarov was born in 1985. In 2008 he graduated from the Lomonosov Moscow State University, PhD in Economics.

    He worked in various positions at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration and the Ministry of Economic Development. He participated in the development of the Russia Development Strategy 2018–2024, the Strategy for Innovative Development of Russia until 2020, the Strategy for the Development of Small and Medium-Sized Entrepreneurship until 2030, the preparation of state programs, national and federal projects, as well as initiatives for the socio-economic development of Russia until 2030.

    Until now, he held the position of head of the strategic group of the Center for National Projects of the ANO “Analytical Center under the Government of the Russian Federation”.

    Sadly, a 17-year-old man has died following a crash at Roger River Road, Roger River today.
    Police and emergency services were called to the scene about 12.15 pm.
    Initial inquiries indicate the man was travelling north on Roger River Road in a Ford Ranger Flattray Utility, as part of his employment, when he has veered to the incorrect side of the road, entered the verge and travelled a short distance before colliding with a tree.
    Anyone with information or relevant dash cam footage, is asked to contact police on 131 444 and quote ESCAD 144-25072025.
    Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Drive for energy efficiency sees registration of 7 000 buildings

    The Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, Samantha Graham-Maré, has announced that over 7 000 public and private buildings have registered for an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).

    An EPC is a certificate that indicates how much energy is being used to operate a building, which is indicated through a performance scale of A-G, with A indicating a building is most energy efficient and G being least energy efficient. 

    The requirement of having an EPC will play a key role in greenhouse gas emissions reduction, which is a key requirement to improve energy efficiency and saving costs.

    As part of the Department of Electricity and Energy’s (DEE) and South African Energy Development Institute’s (Sanedi) priority to drive energy efficiency in South Africa, organisations have until 7 December 2025 to register for the certificate.

    “With only five months left before registrations close, large building owners need to prioritise this. We aim to reach 60 000 registrations by the closing date. I am working with the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Mcpherson, and will also be working with Premiers and Mayors to ensure that this issue gets immediate attention. 

    “There is an opportunity for all South Africans to play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions and benefit from the programme,” said the Deputy Minister.

    Since its launch in December 2020 until 21 July 2025, a total of 7 113 buildings have registered, and 3 884 EPCs have been issued. 

    “I urge all building owners, both public and private, to adopt and implement alternative and energy-saving methods. We need to be creative and innovative so that we save on energy. 

    “Some practical ways to do this include installing LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs and smart geysers, fitting solar panels, and turning off appliances when they are not in use. I encourage anyone to engage my department about the programme and how they can implement this initiative,” Graham-Maré said.

    The purpose of EPCs:

    • Indicates the energy performance of a building,
    • Serve as regulatory tools/instruments targeting inefficient buildings, encouraging transformation towards energy-efficient buildings,
    • Are indicators for building owners to note and change their consumption patterns to benefit financially and comply with regulations, and
    • In the long term, they promote the reduction of Greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of energy efficiency interventions using reliable data from existing EPCs. – SAnews.gov.za

    Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Maropene Ramokgopa, has called on G20 nations to demonstrate bold leadership and shared accountability in addressing the world’s most pressing development challenges.

    Ramokgopa has emphasised the importance of inclusive growth, social protection, and sustainable financing.

    “This week is crucial for the advancement of our shared commitment to confront global development challenges. We gather not just as Ministers and officials, but as stewards of a common ambition to build a world in which progress does not bypass the most vulnerable,” the Minister said.

    The Minister addressed the Fourth G20 Development Working Group (DWG) Meeting at Skukuza Lodge, in the Kruger National Park which wraps up today.

    The working group meetings, hosted under South Africa’s G20 Presidency brought together G20 member states, invited countries, and international organisations to discuss key development priorities.  

    These include the need to tackle illicit financial flows, strengthen domestic resource mobilisation, advance inclusive social protection systems and align development finance with the Sustainable Development Goals.

    Ramokgopa underscored the urgent need to address illicit financial flows, describing them as a threat to financial stability and a barrier to development.

    “Illicit financial flows undermine public trust, drain essential resources, and destabilise economies. We urge global cooperation on automatic data sharing, beneficial ownership transparency, and digital identity tracking. We must shine light into the shadowy corners of the global financial system to finance sustainable futures,” she said.

    The Minister said social protection should not be viewed as an act of charity but as a core pillar of sustainable development contributing to economic growth, societal cohesion, and gender equity.

    The Development Working Group meetings were a culmination of negotiations working toward the ministerial declarations that were handed over for the Ministerial Meeting.

    There was an introduction to the G20 USA Presidency, and the meeting was closed with a tribute to the delegation whose hard work and determination were instrumental in shaping a progressive and unified outcome.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: KZN Treasury withdraws support to Umkhanyakude District Municipality

    KwaZulu-Natal Treasury has officially withdrawn its financial support services to Umkhanyakude District Municipality, citing concerns over wasteful expenditure and lack of cooperation from municipal officials.

    Finance MEC Francois Rodgers confirmed the decision in a formal letter addressed to the municipality’s mayor, Siphile Mdaka, on Thursday.

    Rodgers said the decision was taken in a bid to conserve provincial government resources and redirect them where it is possible to work freely in the spirit of building a capable and ethical state.

    According to the MEC, KZN Treasury teams had on various occasions travelled to Umkhanyakhude a day in advance, to facilitate a full productive day with municipal officials.

    However, the teams have often found themselves subjected to late cancellations of sessions by municipal officials, either the evening before, the mornings of scheduled meetings.

    “These [recurring late cancellations] has resulted in fruitless and wasteful expenditure being incurred by KZN Provincial Treasury,” Rodgers said.

    In his letter to the mayor, Rodgers emphasised that Treasury has limited resources, and in determining which municipalities to support; the municipal manager is required to “commit to the initiative and to provide assurance that the Treasury teams will receive full cooperation.”

    “This clearly has not happened, and I have therefore instructed my team to withdraw from the municipality and to reassign the resources to other municipalities that desperately require our support,” Rodgers said.

    Intervention in municipality

    The withdrawal of support comes as Umkhanyakude District Municipality faces heightened scrutiny.

    KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Thulasizwe Buthelezi, recently invoked Section 139(1)(b) of the Constitution to place the municipality under administration.

    The section empowers the provincial government to intervene when a municipality fails to fulfil its constitutional mandate to deliver services.

    Buthelezi has launched a forensic investigation under Section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act to probe allegations of corruption and maladministration within the municipality.

    “This investigation, being conducted in terms of Section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act, aims to thoroughly examine the various allegations. The intervention will ensure that officials are held accountable should any wrongdoing be uncovered by the investigators,” Buthelezi said. – SAnews.gov.za

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Sierra Leone and African Development Bank Target $90 Billion in Annual Illicit Financial Flows

    A four-day high-level seminar concluded last week with concrete recommendations to combat the estimated $90 billion that Africa loses annually to illicit financial flows, as the African Development Bank Group (www.AfDB.org) and Sierra Leone Government intensify efforts to strengthen natural resource governance.

    More than 70 stakeholders from government, civil society, private sector, and international organizations gathered at The Place Resort in Tokeh  under the theme “Harnessing Africa’s Wealth: Curbing Illicit Financial Flows for Resilient Growth and Development.” Illicit financial flows are among Africa’s most pressing economic challenges.

    The dialogue produced specific policy recommendations, including establishing national communities of practice, implementing institutional reforms, and enhancing transparency in resource-backed lending (RBL). Participants agreed that RBLs should be treated as “an option of last resort” and used only with maximum transparency and for investments that directly contribute to repayment capacity.

    “This initiative can help us improve revenue from natural resources by blocking leakages through illegal natural resource trade and improved management of resource-backed lending,” said Sierra Leone’s Finance Minister Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura.

    The workshop sessions focused on identifying illicit financial flows, managing resource-backed lending, and developing transparent governance mechanisms. Participants reviewed findings from the Sierra Leone Country Diagnostic Report, which examined illegal natural resource trade and institutional capacity gaps.

    International expert Bernd Schlenter from Rand Sandton Consulting Group presented technical insights on illicit financial flows patterns and policy recommendations during the intensive sessions.

    Halima Hashi, African Development Bank Country Manager for Sierra Leone, noted the project aligns with the Bank’s Ten-Year Strategy 2024-2033 and Natural Resources Management and Investment Action Plan 2025-2029.

    Broader Impact

    The GONAT Project, funded by the African Development Bank’s Transitional Support Facility, has three pillars: policy analysis and diagnostics, capacity strengthening, and high-level policy dialogue. The initiative supports the African Development Bank’s mission to optimize Africa’s natural wealth for inclusive prosperity.

    “Achieving transparent and equitable natural resource management is not merely a technical exercise—it is a strategic imperative for Africa’s future,” said Dr. Eric Ogunleye, Director of the African Development Bank’s African Development Institute.

    The seminar produced a draft communique for national adoption, with participants pledging to transform the policy recommendations into actionable reforms.

    The United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s Mine Action Programme Tuesday met with the African Group, led by Ghana and chaired by DSRSG/RC Aeneas Chuma, with participation from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tunisia.

    The session focused on the impact of explosive remnants of war, unsecured stockpiles, and uncontrolled arms on civilian safety and development in Libya and the wider region. The Mine Action Programme, together with its partner non-governmental organization HALO Trust, delivered a presentation on the link between weapons and ammunition management and regional stability.

    Participants highlighted the need for continued collaboration and called for strengthened regional approaches to address these shared challenges, which directly affect the lives of civilians, particularly vulnerable populations.

    “Managing weapons and ammunition safely is about more than logistics — it’s about protecting lives, enabling movement and supporting stability,” DSRSG Chuma said.

    The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and with the support of the Western Africa Regional Digital Integration Program (WARDIP) funded by World Bank, convened an eTrade for Women Joint Workshop in Lagos, on Friday July 17th, 2025, to spotlight and strengthen the role of women-led digital businesses in regional trade. This event was held as part of a broader regional agenda to build a more inclusive, connected, and digitally enabled West Africa.

    In his statement on behalf of Madame Massandjé TOURE-LITSE, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Mr. Kolawole SOFOLA, Director of Trade at the ECOWAS Commission, welcomed participants and noted the event’s importance in advancing inclusive digital transformation. He highlighted that the ECOWAS E-Commerce Strategy, adopted by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in July 2023, places women, youth, and small-scale producers at the centre of digital trade reforms to promote regional integration and inclusive development. Through platforms and dialogues such as the workshop, ECOWAS reaffirms its commitment to gender-responsive policymaking and sustainable digital trade development in West Africa.

    In her opening remarks, Madam Sonia NNAGOZIE, the representative of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) highlighted the role of digital trade in unlocking new opportunities for women entrepreneurs across West Africa. She echoed the importance of the workshop in delivering actionable recommendations to improve women’s participation in digital trade. She went on to commend ECOWAS for leading the way in building an enabling digital ecosystem that supports women and appreciated the ongoing partnership between UNCTAD and ECOWAS.

    The workshop served as a platform for dialogue, policy coordination, and knowledge sharing. Participants discussed the structural and policy barriers women face in participating in the digital economy, and shared practical solutions and good practices that promote women’s digital empowerment.

    The event also showcased ECOWAS-led initiatives such as the ECOWAS Trade and Gender Action Plan, export readiness trainings, and platforms like the 50 Million African Women Speak (50MAWS) and the Business-to-Business matchmaking platform of the West Africa Competitiveness Observatory.

    The Workshop was attended by a cross-section of stakeholders including women entrepreneurs, representatives of Ministries responsible for trade in ECOWAS, and development partners.

    The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially launched the Regional E-Commerce Committee, marking another milestone in the implementation of the ECOWAS Regional E-Commerce Strategy (2023–2027) on Wednesday July 16th, 2025, in Lagos, Nigeria. The launch was immediately followed by the Committee’s first meeting, which brought together representatives from Member States and Community institutions.

    In his opening remarks during the launch ceremony, Dr. Tony Luka Elumelu, the Acting Director of Private Sector, ECOWAS Commission highlighted the private sector as both a key driver and beneficiary of digital transformation. He stressed the significance of e-commerce in unlocking opportunities under African Continental Free Trade Agreement and called for robust implementation of digital reforms. He described the establishment of the Regional E-Commerce Committee as pivotal to fostering private-sector-led digital economies.

    Madam Sally Koroma, the representative of the Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Republic of Sierra Leone and Chair of the Meeting emphasized the potential of e-commerce to boost inclusive growth. She highlighted the importance of harmonized regulations, secure infrastructure, digital literacy, and tailored financing to unlock the full benefits of digital trade. She commended the ECOWAS E-Commerce Strategy as critical to addressing these barriers and called for collective action among Member States, development partners, and the private sector to move from ambition to implementation, and build an inclusive, gender-responsive digital economy.

    In his goodwill message, Mr. Pedro Manuel Moreno, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) congratulated ECOWAS on its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of regional cooperation. He celebrated the adoption of the ECOWAS Regional E-Commerce Strategy and highlighted the role of digitalisation in realizing ECOWAS Vision 2050. He reaffirmed UNCTAD’s commitment to support digital reform, encourage inclusive digital ecosystems, and advance women’s economic empowerment within the region.     In the keynote address, on behalf of Madame Massandjé TOURE-LITSE, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Mr. Kolawole SOFOLA, Director of Trade of the ECOWAS Commission, underscored the significance of the launch of the Regional E-Commerce Committee during the 50th Anniversary celebrations of ECOWAS, noting the progress that had been made in advancing regional integration and the opportunities that lay ahead through digitalisation. He emphasized that the Committee would serve as a platform for implementing strategic goals, aligning policies, and accelerating digital trade across borders.

    Mr. Sofola called for continued collaboration across all stakeholders to realise the Strategy’s vision of an inclusive and sustainable digital future for West Africa. Finally, he declared the ECOWAS Regional E-Commerce Committee launched.

    The newly established Committee is a central feature of the governance framework outlined in the ECOWAS E-Commerce Strategy, which was adopted by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in July 2023. It is designed to steer the implementation of digital trade reforms, foster inter-institutional coordination, and promote inclusive participation across the region, particularly of women, youth, and MSMEs.

    The launch and first meeting were attended by representatives of the Ministries responsible for Trade from ECOWAS Member States and the internal working group on e-commerce, consisting of key directorates and agencies of the ECOWAS Commission. Prior to the launch, the internal working group on e-commerce received a training on the e-Trade Reform Tracker, a tool for monitoring implementation of the E-Commerce Strategy. Both activities were supported by the UNCTAD and the Western Africa Regional Digital Integration Program (WARDIP) funded by World Bank.

    The meeting considered the overview of the ECOWAS E-Commerce Strategy, continental and regional digital initiatives as well as key initiatives from Member States in advancing e-commerce. The meeting concluded with the adoption of the terms of reference for the Committee and a call for continued collaboration among ECOWAS Member States to promote implementation of the E-Commerce Strategy.

    The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, today chaired a high-level preparatory meeting of the Organising Committee for the 13th edition of the Commission de la Jeunesse et des Sports de l’Océan Indien (CJSOI) Games, which Seychelles is proud to host from 1st to 11th August 2025.

    Held at State House, the meeting brought together all key stakeholders, including senior government officials, representatives of the Local Organising Committee, law enforcement and emergency services, youth and sports authorities, volunteers’ coordinators, and partners from both the public and private sectors.

    The meeting served as a comprehensive final review of operational readiness across key sectors, including logistics, infrastructure, security, medical services, and transportation. It also assessed the overall experience being curated for athletes and delegations from the Indian Ocean region. The President was briefed on progress and final preparations in each area, aimed at ensuring a successful and memorable edition of the Games.

    President Ramkalawan expressed his satisfaction with the level of commitment demonstrated by all teams involved and reiterated the importance of national unity, hospitality, and professionalism in showcasing Seychelles to the region. He commended the efforts of all those who have contributed to the months of planning and coordination leading up to the event.

    “The CJSOI Games is not just a sporting event—it is a celebration of youth, culture, and regional solidarity. As hosts, we have the opportunity to make this edition a legacy moment for our young people and the entire nation. Let us work together to deliver an exceptional event that reflects the warmth and spirit of Seychelles,” said President Ramkalawan.

    The 2025 CJSOI Games will see participation from seven member countries, with hundreds of young athletes competing across various disciplines, alongside cultural exchanges that promote friendship, understanding, and youth empowerment.   • Kargil Vijay Diwas Padyatra to be held in Drass on July 26 to commemorate 26 years of India’s victory

    The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, through its youth platform MY Bharat (Mera Yuva Bharat), will organise a Kargil Vijay Diwas Padyatra in Drass, Kargil on July 26 to mark the 26th anniversary of India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War. The event is intended as a heartfelt tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers and a powerful display of national unity and gratitude.

    Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, will lead the padyatra alongside Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth. More than 1,000 participants—including youth volunteers, members of the armed forces, war veterans, families of fallen soldiers, and civil society representatives—are expected to take part in the tribute walk.

    The 1.5-kilometre padyatra will begin in the morning from Himabass Public High School and conclude at Government Higher Secondary School in Bhimbet. Following the walk, the ministers and a contingent of 100 youth volunteers will proceed to the Kargil War Memorial to lay wreaths and honour the memory of the soldiers who gave their lives in the conflict.

    As part of the event, 26 women bikers from the Shakti Udgosh Foundation will be felicitated upon their arrival at the War Memorial. The bikers are completing a long-distance rally in tribute to the Kargil martyrs, adding a powerful dimension to the commemorative activities.

    The padyatra will also include a tree plantation drive under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign. This symbolic gesture combines patriotic homage with environmental consciousness, reflecting the government’s larger commitment to sustainability under the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

    In the lead-up to the event, MY Bharat has been actively engaging young people and local communities through a series of activities such as essay competitions, painting, elocution, and Yuva Samvads (youth dialogues). These initiatives are designed to foster civic awareness, highlight stories of courage from the Kargil War, and deepen the emotional bond between the youth and the armed forces.

    The Kargil Vijay Diwas Padyatra is part of the broader Viksit Bharat Padyatras campaign, aimed at promoting national pride, youth participation, and the spirit of collective remembrance. In line with the PM vision of Jan Bhagidari in Rashtranirman, the initiative seeks to involve every citizen—especially the youth—in the shared mission of nation-building and preserving the legacy of service and sacrifice.

    Rosneft has been systematically working to preserve biological diversity and replenish the country’s aquatic bioresources for over 11 years. In July, the Company’s subsidiaries released more than 4.7 million young fish into Russian waters, including species listed in the Red Book.

    Together with employees of Rosneft subsidiaries, volunteers from the Movement of the First, students from partner universities and children of employees took part in environmental campaigns to stock water bodies with fish.

    Oil workers of Tyumenneftegaz sent 2.12 million muksun fry to the rivers and reservoirs of Siberia, Taas-Yuryakh Neftegazodobycha – 1.23 million peled, Kharampurneftegaz – 50 thousand nelma, RN-Purneftegaz – 457 thousand peled, 43 thousand muksun and 2 thousand nelma, SevKomNeftegaz – 357.7 thousand nelma, Angarsk Petrochemical Company – 10 thousand peled, RN-Uvatneftegaz – 2.9 thousand nelma.

    Employees of the Novokuibyshevsk Oil Refinery replenished the Volga bioresources with 11 thousand sterlet fry. Almost 9.5 thousand fry of this valuable fish species were released by Samaraneftegaz and 3.3 thousand by the Saratov Oil Refinery.

    The rearing and subsequent release of fry were carried out taking into account scientific data on the most favorable conditions for their adaptation in the natural environment and further reproduction.

    Preserving the environment for future generations is an integral part of the Rosneft-2030 strategy. The company and its subsidiaries aim to achieve leadership positions in minimizing environmental impact and environmentally friendly production, and are also implementing a number of comprehensive programs to preserve and restore natural resources.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: At UN High-Level Political Forum, UNECE calls for engagement of all enablers and partnerships to achieve SDGs

    With just five years remaining to realize the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the world faces a deepening social crisis. Economic insecurity, widening inequalities, and declining social trust undermine progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and threaten the foundations of peaceful, inclusive societies.  

    Taking part in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York (14 – 23 July), UNECE Executive Secretary Tatiana Molcean outlined the tools, initiatives and partnerships from the UNECE region that can help develop efficient and inclusive policy solutions for some of the most pressing issues, including demographic pressure, education, employment, housing, and social care. This requires the full engagement of all of society and harnessing of several key enablers. 

    Enablers and partnerships to advance SDGs 

    To advance the 2030 Agenda, and identify efficient and inclusive policy solutions, UNECE engages key enablers and all relevant stakeholders: 

    These enablers and stakeholders play a strong role in co-creating and implementing standards and policies, guiding progress in many technology-driven areas, such as autonomous vehicles, the smart energy transition, cross-border connectivity, but also in environmental governance, namely transboundary water cooperation, noted the Executive Secretary at the HLPF regional session. 

    To unlock financing for the SDGs, UNECE prioritizes bringing together the public and private sectors through its PPP and Infrastructure Evaluation and Rating System (PIERS), a quality assurance tool that helps governments and stakeholders ensure that PPP and infrastructure projects are well designed and aligned with the SDGs and can therefore attract investors. They are crucial for building resilient infrastructure and maintaining public services. 

    Given the importance of local policies and action in advancing SDGs, UNECE’s Forum of Mayors promotes exchanges between cities and gives them a voice at the multilateral level.  

    Finally, with their valuable perspectives, civil society and youth play an important role in finding and devising policy solutions across many areas of UNECE work, which is why they are an important pillar of the UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development.  

    Strengthening social inclusion and adequate housing 

    Despite considerable wealth and innovation, the UNECE region is witnessing deep and growing disparities: between urban and rural areas, generations, and different groups. Social protection systems facing significant demographic pressures, fiscal constraints, and new labour dynamics. This requires investing in inclusive education, training and re-skilling initiatives, especially for disadvantaged groups, such as youth, women and older people, noted the Executive Secretary at the UNDESA global policy dialogue “Accelerating Social Progress to Boost SDG Implementation.”  

    UNECE’s work in this area shows that investing in adequate care infrastructure is not only a social imperative but also economically beneficial as it empowers people to participate in society and the economy. The upcoming World Summit for Social Development in Doha offers an important opportunity to act on commitments from the recent 4th International Conference on Financing for Development and to align both public spending and private finance with inclusive objectives. 

    Access to adequate and affordable housing has emerged as an issue central to achieving social inclusion and the SDGs. Through its Committee on Housing, Urban Development and Land Management, as well as the Forum of Mayors, UNECE supports national and local governments to design and implement inclusive, energy-efficient and climate-responsive urban policies and help them transform housing into a pillar of social stability, the Executive Secretary stressed at the high-level dialogue on adequate housing, co-hosted by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and UN-Habitat. 

    The upcoming UNECE Forum of Mayors in October 2025 will feature a dedicated segment on adequate housing, with discussion feeding into a Ministerial Meeting on Housing Affordability and Sustainability on 8 October in Geneva. 

    Role of UNECE and other UN Regional Commissions  

    The UN Regional Commissions play a key role in convening, coordinating and driving innovative policy solutions. As the custodian of several global conventions, agreements and treaties with strong implications for multiple industries, UNECE plays a unique role in helping UN Member States to achieve social and economic wellbeing.  

    UNECE’s policy, standard-setting and capacity-building work across areas, such as energy, environment, trade, transport and many more, helps to boost predictability, investor confidence, as well as institutional, regulatory and policy conditions to facilitate bankable projects.      

    In that respect the UN80 initiative, which aims to strengthen efficiencies and coordination across the UN system, can unlock further benefits for member States, noted the Executive Secretary during her exchanges with representatives of Denmark, France, The Netherlands, Slovenia, United States, and Uzbekistan.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: WFP concludes El Nino Emergency Drought Relief Response through the global humanitarian fund in Namibia

    WINDHOEK – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in collaboration with partner organisations, has successfully wrapped up a critical a nine-month emergency response in support of the Government of Namibia’s Emergency Drought Response Plan to the El Niño-induced drought.

    With a contribution of US$3 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (UN-CERF), WFP supported the government in delivering life-saving food and nutrition assistance to over 63,000 vulnerable people across Kavango East, Kavango West, and Omaheke regions between October 2024 and June 2025.

    In addition to food assistance, the project served as a platform for integrated service delivery. At food distribution sites, UNICEF provided outreach and basic health screenings for more than 83,500 people and facilitated referrals for malnourished children. UNFPA reached more than 22,400 people with Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) services through daily mobile outreach in schools and communities. A community feedback mechanism system was also established, enabling affected populations to share their needs, concerns and suggestions to help shape and improve the response. 

    “This emergency response was about more than just delivering food, it was about restoring dignity and hope to communities hit hardest by the drought,” said Naouar Labidi, WFP Country Representative in Namibia. “Thanks to the generous support from UN-CERF and our collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister and UN partners, namely the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), we reached tens of thousands of people with vital humanitarian assistance. But we also used this moment to invest in local capacity, strengthen partnerships, and helping communities build the resilience they need to face climate shocks.”

    The contribution from CERF allowed over 41,000 people (nearly 7000 households) to receive three rounds of food vouchers, enabling them to purchase essential items such as maize meal, canned fish and cooking oil from 25 participating retailers. This not only supported immediate needs, but also helped boost the local economy, laying the groundwork for longer-term resilience by supporting local businesses, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening local supply chains. At the same time, 22,000 children received hot and nutritious meals from 155 conveniently located soup kitchens.

    WFP remains committed to working closely with the Government of Namibia, UN agencies and partners to strengthen food systems, build community resilience and enhance emergency preparedness to future climate shocks.

    Lt. Gen. Brennan and Ambassador Scott engaged with Namibia’s Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs Frans Kapofi. The leaders discussed regional security concerns, joint training opportunities, maritime domain awareness, and efforts to counter wildlife and timber trafficking.

    “Namibia plays an important role as an anchor for fostering stability in southern Africa,” said Brennan. “I appreciate Minister Kapofi’s willingness to meet this week. Our two nations’ ongoing collaboration reflects a shared commitment to addressing complex challenges in the region and advancing areas of mutual interests. We look forward to working with Namibia to develop new avenues of cooperation in the future.”

    “U.S. Africa Command is dedicated to forging strong partnerships with African nations like Namibia who are directly contributing to security, stability, and prosperity in the region,” said Scott. “From participating in maritime security events to collaborating on vital projects like building field hospitals and countering wildlife trafficking and other transnational threats, we are finding common ground with Namibia.” 

    AFRICOM and Namibia have traditionally partnered in areas such as enhancing the country’s health infrastructure, stemming wildlife trafficking, and expanding trade and development opportunities. Additionally in 2025, Namibia observed AFRICOM’s maritime security exercise Obangame Express and participated in the African Maritime Forces Summit. Both events bring militaries together to enhance joint readiness and foster opportunities for African nations to collectively safeguard their coastlines. 

    AFRICOM is one of seven U.S. geographic combatant commands, responsible for military engagement across 53 African nations. Working with partners and allies, the command counters malign actors and transnational threats, responds to crises, strengthens African security forces, and supports U.S. government efforts in Africa to advance U.S. national interests and promote regional security, stability, and prosperity.

  • IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in Odisha, Jharkhand and Bengal; Delhi to see light showers till July 28

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over several regions of the country due to a depression persisting over coastal West Bengal and the adjoining areas of the northwest Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh.

    The IMD said that monsoon conditions will remain active over central and eastern India and along the west coast and adjoining ghat regions over the next four to five days.

    Going forward, the IMD expects extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over Odisha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and coastal Karnataka on July 25, continuing in Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Konkan, and the ghat areas of central Maharashtra on July 25 and 26.

    Western Madhya Pradesh will likely experience heavy rainfall on July 26 and 27, in eastern Madhya Pradesh on July 26 and eastern Rajasthan on July 27.

    Very heavy rainfall is also anticipated at isolated locations in Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh from July 25 to 29.

    Similar warnings have been issued for Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Mizoram, Tripura, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya on different days during this period.

    In the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall (measuring 21 cm or more) was recorded at isolated locations in the ghat areas of central Maharashtra.

    Several areas including Konkan, coastal and south interior Karnataka, Gangetic West Bengal, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, and Assam experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall (ranging from 7 to 20 cm).

    Additionally, heavy rainfall (between 7 and 11 cm) was observed at isolated places across East Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Telangana.

    Weather forecast for Delhi-NCR

    In Delhi-NCR, the weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy with chances of very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms or lightning until July 28.

    On Friday, maximum temperatures are likely to hover between 36°C and 38°C, with the mercury staying above normal by 1°C to 3°C. Winds are expected to blow from the northwest at speeds of 15–20 kmph in the afternoon, decreasing to 10–15 kmph by evening.

    On July 26, maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be between 34°C and 36°C, and 27°C and 29°C respectively, with the maximum temperature staying near normal and the minimum slightly above normal.

    The trend will continue on July 27, with generally cloudy skies and light rain expected. Temperatures are predicted to range from 33°C and 35°C for the maximum and 26°C and 28°C for the minimum, with the day temperature likely to be slightly below normal. Winds will shift from the southwest to northwest throughout the day.

    On July 28, the maximum temperature is expected to drop further, settling between 31°C and 33°C, while the minimum will remain in the range of 26°C and 28°C. Light rain with thunderstorms is again forecast, accompanied by light winds predominantly from the west, shifting to the southeast by night.
