  • MIL-OSI USA: Duckworth Slams Far-Right Supreme Court’s Shameful Decision to Allow Enforcement of Trump’s Trans Military Service Ban

    US Senate News:

    Source: United States Senator for Illinois Tammy Duckworth

    May 07, 2025

    [WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today issued the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration may start enforcing Donald Trump’s un-American, unjust trans military service ban while legal challenges to the ban are still ongoing:

    “Absolutely shameful. Trump’s trans military service ban hurts our military readiness, makes our military’s recruitment challenges even worse and disrespects Americans who are brave enough to serve in uniform. This ruling from the far-right, Trump-appointed Supreme Court majority will make our military less lethal and Americans less safe—it just empowered Donald Trump to fire a servicemember who flew more than 60 combat missions, including in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

    Last month, Duckworth led 13 of her fellow Senate Democratic colleagues in condemning President Trump’s transgender military service ban for being a blatant violation of our brave servicemembers’ civil rights and weakening our national security. In the letter to Defense Secretary Hegseth, the lawmakers derided the ban for not only being discriminatory and based on false pretenses, but also for hurting our military readiness and exacerbating the ongoing military recruiting crisis in service of continuing hateful attacks against transgender Americans.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Crapo, Wyden Introduce Bill to Improve Wetland Habitats in the Pacific Northwest

    US Senate News:

    Source: United States Senator for Idaho Mike Crapo

    Washington, D.C.–U.S. Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) introduced bipartisan legislation that would improve wetland habitats in the Pacific Northwest.

    “Preserving critical wetland habitat is vital to protecting open landscapes for the diverse species–including numerous varieties of birds and fish–that call Idaho home,” Crapo said.  “Investments in public-private partnerships in Idaho and the Pacific Northwest will help keep wild spaces wild and protect the natural wonders that Idahoans treasure.”

    “Restoring our wetlands is about more than just providing habitat for birds and other wildlife living along the Pacific Northwest coast.  It is about investing in the watersheds where Tribes, farmers and other local Pacific Northwest communities have maintained their way of life for generations,” Wyden said.  “Our bipartisan bill will make sure Oregonians and people across the Pacific Northwest can continue to benefit from healthy landscapes that provide the clean water and habitat that make our region so special.”

    The Northwest Wetlands Voluntary Incentives Program Act would establish a federal grant and assistance program empowering government agencies, tribes, nonprofits and landowners, among other entities, to work together in both restoring and enhancing habitats for wetland-dependent birds living in the Columbia River Basin and along the coast of Oregon and Washington. These projects include water infrastructure and management and enhancement of vegetative habitat, which could be implemented on public, private, Tribal and other land determined by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

    The Northwest Wetlands Voluntary Incentives Program Act is endorsed by Idaho Wildlife Federation, Idaho Sportsmen, Ducks Unlimited, Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture, Coalition of Oregon Land Trusts and Oregon Agricultural Trust.

    “We appreciate Senators Crapo and Wyden introducing the NW Wetlands VIP Act.  Sportsmen and the wildlife we work to conserve–as well as area farmers that are such critical partners in landscape conservation–will benefit from the habitat restoration opportunities and infrastructure improvements that this legislation will provide,” said Nick Fasciano, Executive Director of the Idaho Wildlife Federation.  “As our wetland habitats face long-term threats of degradation and fragmentation, this legislation is all the more critical.”

    “Access and opportunity for the sportsmen and women of Idaho who hunt, fish, trap and recreationally shoot, is paramount.  In a state where water is our most precious resource, Idaho farmers and landowners are working hard to provide more managed wetlands and habitat,” said Benn Brocksome, Founder and Chairman of Idaho Sportsmen, Access & Opportunity.  “Many landowners in Idaho, and across the West, share our conservation goals and work with sportsmen in a pragmatic and collaborative way to meet the needs of Idaho.  These efforts should be supported, bolstered and recognized with the passage of this important bill.”

    “This important legislation will bring much needed resources for improving water infrastructure to provide multi-benefits for agricultural lands and wetland habitats in the Northwest and Columbia River Basin,” said Jeff McCreary, Operations Director for the Western Region of Ducks Unlimited.  “We are thankful to Senators Wyden and Crapo for introducing the Northwest Wetlands VIP Act.”

    “The Northwest Wetlands VIP Act is strongly aligned with the priorities of Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture (Pacific Birds).  The bill supports wetlands conservation on the coast of Oregon and Washington and within the Columbia River Basin; areas that are vital for millions of waterbirds and wetland-dependent species.  The proposal represents a smart federal investment in durable ecosystems, strong partnerships, and natural and working landscapes,” said Glenn Lamb, Vice Chair of the Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture Board of Directors.  “It offers an actionable way to advance Pacific Birds’ priorities and deliver real benefits for wildlife, communities and the economy of the Pacific Northwest.  The NW Wetlands VIP Act emphasizes collaboration among Tribes, nonprofits, local governments and landowners–consistent with Pacific Birds’ partnership-driven approach.  This bill will provide resources for the installation, maintenance and replacement of critical infrastructure, which aligns with Pacific Birds’ goal to support long-term habitat management while emphasizing multi-species benefits and multi-benefit projects, and empowering collaborative on-the-ground action.”

    “The Columbia River?Basin holds critical habitat for migratory birds and other wetland dependent species,” said Joe Buttafuoco, Executive Director at Coalition of Oregon Land Trusts (COLT).  “COLT and our members are thrilled about the bipartisan NW?Wetlands VIP?Act.  This bill would offer grants that land trusts, Tribes, private landowners and nonprofits can use to improve habitat, manage invasive species and restore floodplain connectivity.  Thank you to Senators?Wyden and?Crapo for advancing this important legislation.”

    “The Northwest Wetlands VIP Act would bring critical infrastructure dollars to Pacific Northwest farmers and ranchers. These water management projects not only enhance and restore wetland habitat for migratory birds, but help producers improve agricultural production on parts of their properties,” said Nellie McAdams, Executive Director of Oregon Agricultural Trust.  “The Act also provides funding to support conservation easements (up to 10% of the total grant award) which protect farms and ranches for agriculture and associated habitat.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: Justice Department Announces Results of Operation Restore Justice: 205 Child Sex Abuse Offenders Arrested in FBI-led Nationwide Crackdown

    Source: United States Attorneys General 1

    Today, the Department of Justice announced the results of Operation Restore Justice, a coordinated enforcement effort to identify, track and arrest child sex predators. The operation resulted in the rescue of 115 children and the arrests of 205 child sexual abuse offenders in the nationwide crackdown. The coordinated effort was executed over the course of five days by all 55 FBI field offices, the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) in the Department’s Criminal Division, and United States Attorney’s Offices around the country.

    “The Department of Justice will never stop fighting to protect victims — especially child victims — and we will not rest until we hunt down, arrest, and prosecute every child predator who preys on the most vulnerable among us,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “I am grateful to the FBI and their state and local partners for their incredible work in Operation Restore Justice and have directed my prosecutors not to negotiate.”

    “Every child deserves to grow up free from fear and exploitation, and the FBI will continue to be relentless in our pursuit of those who exploit the most vulnerable among us,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “Operation Restore Justice proves that no predator is out of reach and no child will be forgotten. By leveraging the strength of all our field offices and our federal, state and local partners, we’re sending a clear message: there is no place to hide for those who prey on children.”

    Those arrested are alleged to have committed various crimes including the production, distribution, and possession of child sexual abuse material, online enticement and transportation of minors, and child sex trafficking. In Minneapolis, for example, a state trooper and Army Reservist was arrested for allegedly producing child sexual abuse material while wearing his uniforms. In Norfolk, VA, an illegal alien from Mexico is accused of transporting a minor across state lines for sex. In Washington, D.C., a former Metropolitan Police Department Police Officer was arrested for allegedly trafficking minor victims.

    In many cases, parental vigilance and community outreach efforts played a critical role in bringing these offenders to justice. For example, a California man was arrested about eight hours after a young victim bravely came forward and disclosed their abuse to FBI agents after an online safety presentation at a school near Albany, NY.

    This effort follows the Department’s observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, this effort and underscores the Department’s unwavering commitment to protecting children and raising awareness about the dangers they face. While the Department, including the FBI, investigates and prosecutes these crimes every day, April serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preventing these crimes, seeking justice for victims, and raising awareness through community education.

    The Justice Department is committed to combating child sexual exploitation. These cases were brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, visit www.justice.gov/psc.

    The Department partners with and oversees funding grants for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which receives and shares tips about possible child sexual exploitation received through its 24/7 hotline at 1-800-THE-LOST and on missingkids.org.

    The Department urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspected exploitation of a child through the FBI’s tipline at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324), tips.fbi.gov, or by calling your local FBI field office.

    Seven cases move forward in Western Washington during National Child Abuse Prevention month

    Seattle – Today, the Department of Justice announced the results of Operation Restore Justice, a coordinated enforcement effort to identify, track and arrest child sex predators.  The operation resulted in the rescue of 115 children and the arrest of 205 child sexual abuse offenders in the nationwide crackdown.  The coordinated effort was executed by all 55 FBI field offices, the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section in the Department’s Criminal Division, and United States Attorney’s Offices around the country.

    In the Western District of Washington, seven federal cases moved forward with criminal charges, pleas, and/or sentencings of those who target minors for sexual abuse.

    “There is no greater responsibility than protecting our children from those seeking to sexually abuse them, either online or in person,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller. “The cases we prosecuted over the last month charging child sexual exploitation in person and over the internet, and child sex trafficking are examples of the difficult work we do every day with our law enforcement partners to try to keep children safe.”

    “FBI Seattle’s Violent Crimes Against Children squad and our partners are hard at work, not only during Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, but also throughout the year,” said W. Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Seattle field office. “We are arresting predators, recovering children, and assisting victims through the support of our victim specialists. Just this fiscal year in the Seattle division, we have arrested 122 subjects and identified or located 59 children.”

    Source: Government of Canada regional news

    Released on May 7, 2025

    Innovation Saskatchewan is proud to support Saskatchewan’s tech sector through a $25,000 investment in Uniting the Prairies (UP), the Prairies’ premier startup-focused tech conference hosted by Co.Labs.

    The conference’s unique focus on connecting tech founders with active investors and industry leaders attracts more than 650 investors, startups and community members from across the country. This event aims to showcase the province’s rapidly evolving tech hub in Saskatoon.

    “Saskatchewan has a thriving tech sector that is advancing world class technologies and generating significant growth across our province,” Minister Responsible for Innovation Saskatchewan Warren Kaeding said. “Uniting the Prairies provides a unique opportunity to showcase both the innovators and the environment that support our renowned innovation ecosystem.”

    UP facilitates networking opportunities, potential funding through pitch competitions and insightful discussions with tech experts that catalyze tangible results for startup attendees. For example, in 2024, four women-led startups received a combined $135,000 from angel investors at the event, including $25,000 for Battleford, Sask.-based Combine Settings.

    “Uniting the Prairies has grown into the largest annual gathering of the Saskatchewan tech community and a place to showcase the best and fastest growing prairie startups on the National stage,” Uniting the Prairies and Executive Director of Co.Labs Jonathan Lipoth said. “We are all set for our biggest and best conference yet.”

    The province’s tech sector is on track to surpass Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan goal of tripling the tech sector by 2030, according to a report commissioned by Innovation Saskatchewan in 2024.

    Notably, the report shows Saskatchewan’s tech sector experienced a 108.6 per cent increase in employment growth rate since 2019 – the largest employment growth rate out of all prairie provinces, outpacing both Alberta and Manitoba.

    In addition to funding programs and incentives like the Saskatchewan Technology Startup Incentive (STSI) and the Agtech Growth Fund (AGF), tech incubators such as Co.Labs have helped reduce technical risk and incentivize local investments in Saskatchewan companies, fueling growth.

    UP participants can visit Innovation Saskatchewan’s booth on site to learn how the agency helps Great Ideas Grow Here and enter to win a Work to Play Getaway in partnership with Tourism Saskatchewan.

    The conference takes place May 7-8 at the Remai Modern in Saskatoon.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Statement from Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson on Tensions Between India and Pakistan

    Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Jonathan Jackson – Illinois (1st District)

    As tensions rise between India and Pakistan, I feel compelled to speak; Not only as a Member of Congress, but as a man who has walked the streets of both nations, embraced their people, and listened to their hopes and fears firsthand.

    I had the honor of visiting both India and Pakistan on congressional and humanitarian missions. In Delhi, I met with educators, students, and faith leaders who are working tirelessly to bridge divides and build a future of innovation and inclusion. In Islamabad, I sat with mothers who shared stories of generational pain, but also expressed dreams of peace for their children. What struck me most on both sides of the border was the shared humanity; the deep desire for dignity, stability, and progress.

    These are not abstract foreign policy issues to me. The Indian and Pakistani communities in Chicago are part of my extended family. I have broken bread in their homes, celebrated their holidays, attended weddings and funerals. These are people who carry dual loves — for their countries of origin and for the American dream they are building here. They are watching these developments with heavy hearts, and so am I.

    My father, Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., always said that peace is not just the absence of war but the presence of justice. He traveled the world to help mediate conflict, whether in the Middle East, Central America, or apartheid South Africa. His mission lives on in my work today: to seek understanding over escalation and diplomacy over destruction.

    It is imperative that both India and Pakistan step back from the brink. Nuclear-armed neighbors cannot afford the cost of war. Not in lives, not in global stability, and not in the futures of their youth. I urge both governments to recommit to dialogue, mutual respect, and a long-term vision for peace in South Asia.

    I will continue to advocate for peace, justice, and the human dignity of all people. Let us rise above the cycles of history and choose a path forward — together.

    EW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced the convictions and sentencings of four defendants charged for selling illegal ghost guns and other firearms in Central New York. An investigation led by the Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) Organized Crime Task Force (OCTF) recovered 34 firearms and receivers, including 21 ghost guns or parts used to make ghost guns, dozens of high-capacity magazines, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. The OAG charged the four defendants with 35 crimes spanning two separate indictments in April 2024. All four defendants have pleaded guilty to Felony Possession of Firearms and have received years-long prison sentences.

    “Gun traffickers who flood our communities with illegal untraceable ghost guns put all New Yorkers in danger,” said Attorney General James. “This investigation took dozens of weapons off of our streets and brought dangerous gun traffickers to justice. I thank our partners in law enforcement for their hard work with this investigation as we continue to protect New Yorkers from gun violence.”

    “This case is a testament to the results we can achieve when agencies work together to combat the flow of illegal weapons and dismantle violent trafficking networks,” said New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James. “The individuals involved in this operation posed a significant threat to public safety, and I commend our Community Stabilization Unit, Special Investigations Unit, and all law enforcement partners for their tireless work in bringing them to justice. We remain committed to targeting the sources of gun violence and holding those responsible fully accountable.”

    The convictions were the result of a joint investigation between OCTF and the New York State Police Community Stabilization Unit, with assistance from the New York State Police Special Investigations Unit’s Rochester and Syracuse offices and the Syracuse Police Department. In April 2024, four individuals were charged with 35 crimes for their involvement in the sale and possession of firearms. The investigation included law enforcement subpoenas, covert physical surveillance, the use of undercover investigators and other intelligence gathering techniques.

    In June 2022, OCTF began an investigation into two sources of illegal firearms trafficking, including ghost guns, in the Syracuse area. The investigation revealed that Brian Lawson, a/k/a “P’Nut,” Jeremy Baker, a/k/a “Rico,” and Charles Baker possessed and distributed firearms in and around Onondaga County. During the course of the investigation, OCTF detectives recovered numerous firearms alleged to have been sold by Lawson and the Bakers, including Polymer80 9mm pistols with no serial numbers and several serialized but unregistered handguns.

    All three individuals pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C violent felony, before Judge Matthew J. Doran in Onondaga County Court. On March 3, 2025, Charles and Jeremy Baker were each sentenced to six years in prison, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision. Both Bakers also forfeited $4,100 for firearm sales they made to undercover investigators. On February 5, 2025, Lawson was sentenced to three and a half years in state prison with five years of post-release supervision for his role in the transactions.

    John Leone, Jr., who was charged in a second indictment with firearm possession and sale in Onondaga County, entered a guilty plea before Judge Doran to Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree. He was sentenced this week to two and a half to five years in state prison.

    Over the course of the investigation, authorities seized the following firearms and components:

    • Nine Polymer80 and AR-15 style unfinished frames/receivers, used to assemble ghost guns;
    • Nine unserialized and unregistered Polymer80 ghost gun pistols;
    • Nine serialized unregistered firearms;
    • Three AR-15 style rifles;
    • One 7.62 assault rifle;
    • Three ghost guns, including an assault rifle;
    • Dozens of magazines, including several extended magazines classified as high-capacity ammunition feeding devices; and
    • Hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

    This investigation marks another major gun bust in Attorney General James’ ongoing mission to recover unregistered firearms and prosecute those responsible for the proliferation of gun violence in New York.

    The investigation was led by now-retired NYSP Investigator Todd Grant of the Community Stabilization Unit and OCTF Detective William Elsenbeck and Supervising Detective John T. MacConaghy, under the supervision of OCTF Upstate Chief Detective John Monte and Deputy Chief Andrew Boss. The Attorney General’s Investigations Division is led by Chief Oliver Pu-Folkes.

    The case was prosecuted by OCTF Assistant Deputy Attorney General Geoffrey Ciereck, with the assistance of Legal Support Analyst Sean McCauley and OCTF Confidential Clerk Theresa Rowe, under the supervision of Upstate OCTF Deputy Chief Maria Moran. Nicole Keary is the Deputy Attorney General in Charge of OCTF. The OCTF is part of the Criminal Justice Division, which is led by Chief Deputy Attorney General Jose Maldonado.  Both the Investigations Division and the Criminal Justice Division are overseen by First Deputy Attorney General Jennifer Levy.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Supporting New York’s Public Workforce

    Source: US State of New York

    overnor Kathy Hochul today highlighted her administration’s commitment to supporting New York’s public workforce in honor of Public Service Recognition Week, a nationwide celebration of the contributions of public service employees at the local, state and federal levels. Since the launch, New York State has received 5,689 applications and hired 50 former federal workers into the state workforce as a result of Governor Hochul’s “You’re Hired” campaign — these public service employees will serve in positions all across the state’s public service sector. In addition, the Governor issued a proclamation declaring Public Service Recognition Week in New York from May 4-10, 2025, and announced that state landmarks would be lit blue in celebration, building on Governor Hochul’s continued support for public workers.

    “Public service employees are the backbone of our state — their dedication and commitment to providing New Yorkers with essential services every day does not go unnoticed,” Governor Hochul said. “New York State employees are essential to bolstering our state’s success, and I remain committed to expanding our hardworking public workforce through our ‘You’re Hired’ initiative. We know you’re essential and New York wants you in every part of the public service sector.”

    New York State Department of Civil Service Commissioner and Civil Service President Timothy R. Hogues said, “Under Governor Hochul’s leadership, we are building the ranks of New York’s public workforce to provide the best services to all New Yorkers. Our public employees work hard each and every day to serve their neighbors and make a difference in people’s lives. We are grateful for their dedication and commitment to making New York a great place to live.”

    New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said, “I am so grateful to the hundreds of thousands of employees who have dedicated their careers to public service, creating a safer and stronger New York State. Even in the face of changing times, the commitment and perseverance of our public workforce has not wavered. With competitive pay and robust benefits, I encourage others to answer the call to state service and build a better New York.”

    Since taking office, Governor Hochul has implemented several initiatives to strengthen New York’s public workforce. In February 2025, Governor Hochul launched the “You’re Hired” initiative to recruit talented displaced federal public sector workers into State service. In 2024, the state launched the NY HELPS program, temporarily waiving civil service exam requirements for many job vacancies, resulting in more than 25,000 appointments in state government, on top of 6,000 appointments in local governments. In 2023, Governor Hochul extended 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave to the entire state workforce for the first time in state history.

    Additionally, the state created 10 Centers for Careers in Government, offering job seekers guidance on civil service systems and career opportunities. The Governor has also lifted the state employment hiring freeze, expanded opportunities for individuals and veterans with disabilities, and funded new testing centers to further support the public workforce.

    The landmarks to be lit in honor of Public Service Recognition Week include:

    • One World Trade Center
    • Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge
    • Kosciuszko Bridge
    • The H. Carl McCall SUNY Building
    • State Education Building
    • Alfred E. Smith State Office Building

  • MIL-OSI USA: Kean, Dingell Reintroduce Bipartisan Legislation to Reduce PFAS Risks for Firefighters

    Source: US Representative Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07)

    Contact: Riley Pingree

    (May 7, 2025) WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, Representatives Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07), Debbie Dingell (MI-06), Sam Graves (MO-06), Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Dina Titus (NV-01), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), Glenn Ivey (MD-04), and Glenn “GT” Thompson (PA-15), reintroduced the bipartisan Protecting Firefighters and Advancing State-of-the-Art Alternatives Act (PFAS Alternatives Act), to support development of next-generation PFAS-free turnout gear for firefighters and better protect firefighters from the dangers of their work.

    Sunday, May 4 was International Firefighters’ Day.

    Studies have shown that all three layers of firefighter turnout gear contain Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), a class of fluorinated chemicals known as “forever chemicals.” PFAS chemicals are persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic, and are linked to harmful human health effects, including reproductive and developmental harms, weakened immune systems, and cancer – the leading cause of firefighter death.

    “Our firefighters put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe, and their health and safety must remain a top priority,” said Kean. “That starts with ensuring their gear is free from harmful chemicals that pose serious long-term health risks. I’m pleased to once again co-lead the PFAS Alternatives Act to eliminate toxic substances from firefighter equipment and support the long-term well-being of these brave men and women.”

    “Firefighters’ jobs are already dangerous enough without worrying about the long-term health risks of being exposed to dangerous PFAS in their turnout gear,” said Dingell. “The PFAS Alternatives Act will remove this unnecessary occupational hazard and help protect firefighters as they work every day to protect us.”

    “Firefighters risk enough without being exposed to cancer-causing chemicals in the very gear meant to protect them,” said Fitzpatrick. “The PFAS Alternatives Act takes targeted, bipartisan action to eliminate these toxic substances and accelerate safer solutions. It’s time we matched our gratitude with real protections—as Co-Chair of the PFAS Task Force, I am committed to leading efforts like this to do exactly that.”

    “Firefighters risk their lives every day to keep us safe,” said Bonamici. “The dangers they face shouldn’t come from the gear meant to protect them. I’m grateful to join several of my colleagues to introduce this bipartisan legislation that will spur the development of turnout gear free from dangerous PFAS chemicals and improve the long-term health of the country’s firefighters.”

    “America’s firefighters charge into danger to save the lives of others,” said Graves. “This bipartisan legislation will help develop the next generation of firefighting gear to keep them safe—while they work to protect our families, our communities, and our country.”

    “Firefighters put their health and safety on the line every day to protect our communities. They run in as others run out,” said Titus. “They shouldn’t have to worry about hazardous substances in their own turnout gear. I’m working with my colleagues to support the development of next-generation gear that is more resistant to soot and other chemicals while eliminating exposure to dangerous toxins like PFAS.”

    “First responders deserve first rate gear.  They put their lives on the line every day to save ours.  We must not make those who risk their lives wear even riskier equipment and handle even more dangerous materials,” said Ivey. “PFAS are directly linked to cancer.  And as a kidney cancer survivor, I know the hardship, uncertainty and fear any family would experience being exposed to cancer causing materials.  I want to thank my colleagues for this bipartisan effort.”

    “Firefighters risk their lives to protect the community and in many cases they are exposed to toxic chemicals,” said Thompson. “The PFAS Alternatives Act is commonsense legislation that invests in safer, more effective equipment to better protect our first responders from these toxins.”

    The PFAS Alternatives Act would:

    • Accelerate the development of PFAS-free turnout gear through research, development, and testing of PFAS-free turnout gear materials.
    • Facilitate the development of safer turnout gear materials that reduces the dangers firefighters face, including enhanced protection against primary and secondary exposure to particulates and byproducts of combustion; reduced maintenance that includes contamination resistance and greater ease of cleaning; visible warning indicators to alert firefighters to hazardous exposures or the need for decontamination; and consideration of body composition in turnout gear design.
    • Support guidance and training for firefighters on best practices for reducing harmful exposures through the proper wearing, cleaning, and caring for next-generation turnout gear.
    • Involve the firefighting industry in the development process by requiring grant applicants to utilize the leadership, experience, and knowledge of firefighters to ensure the next-generation turnout gear will be both effective and practical for the everyday demands of firefighting.

    The PFAS Alternatives Act would authorize $25 million annually for each of fiscal years 2025 through 2029 to support the development of new materials, and an additional $2 million annually to support guidance and training.

    The PFAS Alternatives Act is endorsed by the International Association of Fire Fighters.

    “The science is clear. Exposure to toxic PFAS chemicals is driving alarming rates of cancer in the fire service,” said IAFF General President Edward Kelly. “The PFAS Alternatives Act is critical legislation that will help introduce next-generation, PFAS-free gear to better protect fire fighters and ensure we have a voice in developing the very products we rely on for safety. The IAFF is grateful to Rep. Dingell for championing this legislation, and we urge Congress to swiftly pass this bill.”

    US Senate News:

    class=”has-text-align-center”>BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
    A PROCLAMATION
    Today, our Nation proudly commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Allied Powers’ triumph over national socialism and fascism, and the end of World War II in Europe — one of the most epic victories for forces of freedom in the history of the world.  On this Victory Day for World War II, we celebrate the unmatched might, strength, and power of the American Armed Forces, and we commit to protecting our sacred birthright of liberty against all threats, foreign and domestic.In the wake of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States righteously entered the fray of what would become the apex of the eternal battle between good and evil.  After nearly 4 years of the darkest and bloodiest chapters ever recorded in human history, more than 250,000 Americans lost their lives in the fight against the Nazi regime.  Today and every day, we pay tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Nation, their liberty, and the survival of Western civilization.  Without the sacrifice of our American soldiers, this war would not have been won, and our world today would look drastically different.May 8, 1945 marks the Allies’ acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender — the beginning of the end of years of long, gruesome, and brutal warfare.  The millions of souls senselessly lost serve as a reminder of why we must pursue peace through strength.  I remain steadfastly devoted to stopping the years of endless foreign wars and preventing the further loss of lives.  As I stated during my Inaugural Address, we will measure our success not only by the battles we win but also by the wars we end — and my proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker.As we commemorate Victory Day for World War II, we offer our unending thanks to every patriot from the Greatest Generation who left behind his home and family to fight for our freedom in distant lands.  We honor the memories of all those who perished.  Above all, we renew our commitment to keeping America and the entire world safe, secure, prosperous, and free.NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 8, 2025, as a day in celebration of Victory Day for World War II.IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventh day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty‑five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.                                 DONALD J. US Senate News:

    Source: The White House
    class=”has-text-align-center”>By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation
    Families raise our children, pass down our values, and hold communities together, forming the foundation of a strong country.  Yet, far too often, for reasons beyond their control, children and young people find themselves in situations without an avenue for safe and loving care.  These circumstances can be difficult for them, but it is the devoted foster parents across America who rise to the occasion with selfless compassion to ensure every child receives love, support, and a sense of belonging.During National Foster Care Month, the First Lady and I honor the individuals and families who make room in their hearts and homes for thousands of children and youth throughout the year.  Without a question, these dedicated men and women are unsung heroes in our local communities across the country for giving each child in their care as much normalcy as possible while also preparing them to be reunited with family or adopted.My Administration estimates that, annually, more than 360,000 children and youth need the safety and stability a foster family provides.  These licensed and trained foster or kinship-care families step up in times of need to offer emotional support and stability.  Foster families, with the help of countless professionals and volunteers — including clergy, educators, attorneys, judges, social workers, and law enforcement personnel — can help change the course of young lives for the better.  These noble caregivers devote their time and talent to ensuring every child has a safe and healthy environment in which to grow and thrive.As a Nation of enduring faith and strong, guiding principles, every child deserves the blessings of a firm foundation and endless opportunity.  That is why I proudly signed into law the landmark Family First Prevention Services Act during my first term, which utilizes evidence-based intervention methods to keep families intact, whenever possible.  Targeted, proactive services — including mental health support, substance abuse treatment, in home parental skills training, housing assistance, and job training — focus on preventing the root causes of conflicts in the home.Despite the work we have achieved, there is more to be done.  That is why our First Lady is passionately focused on supporting young people through her BE BEST initiative and fostering the future for children and young adults.  Her efforts help children reach their fullest potential, including transformative action for youth who have experienced foster care to help them pursue their dreams through education and continued support.Together, we also recognize the need for more men and women to answer the call and serve as foster families.  Foster families help every child realize their worth and inherent value, instilling them with the courage, character, and confidence to achieve their American Dream.  We are incredibly grateful for their compassion and selfless dedication to protecting our Nation’s most precious treasure.NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 2025 as National Foster Care Month.  I call upon all Americans to find ways to support children and youth in foster care, and to recognize the invaluable contributions of foster parents and other caregivers.IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand thisseventh day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.                                 DONALD J. • MIL-OSI USA: Jayapal Leads Dozens of Members in Demanding Reversal After Trump’s First 100 Days of Cruel and Unconstitutional Immigration Actions

    Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (7th District of Washington)

    WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Ranking Member of the Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee, is leading dozens of Members of Congress in laying out the long list of cruel, inhumane, and often illegal immigration enforcement actions that President Trump’s administration has taken over the first 100 days of his second term and demanding a reversal of these policies.

    “You have repeatedly told the American people that you are focusing your immigration enforcement on the ‘worst of the worst. ’ Unfortunately, it has become apparent that you have completely misled the American people, instead sweeping up large numbers of people indiscriminately, including U.S. citizens and those with lawful status,” wrote the Members. “At the same time, your Administration’s actions have deliberately eroded, evaded, and obfuscated the foundational democratic norms enshrined in our Constitution, including due process, freedom of expression, and separation of powers.

    Under President Trump’s direction, ICE agents and other immigration enforcement bodies have detained U.S. citizens for days, targeted international students despite zero evidence of criminal activity, and sent individuals to foreign gulags without due process. Additionally, on multiple occasions, the Trump administration has completely ignored court rulings ordering them to stop their actions. The Members are demanding an immediate reversal of these policies and more.

    “You have terrorized immigrant communities of all statuses who are our friends, family, and neighbors,” continued the Members. “We urgently demand you to immediately reverse course, fully comply with court orders, and work with us to preserve our democracy.”

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the office of Congressman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) released the following statement:

    “Rep. Van Orden will be missing votes tomorrow and rescheduling his upcoming town hall due to a credible threat made against his wife, children, and grandchildren. The threat was delivered via a letter to his D.C. office and has been reported to the appropriate authorities.

    “No elected official, regardless of political party affiliation, should have to worry about the safety of their family while serving the American people. Threats of political violence are not just dangerous — they are anti-American.

    “This type of behavior is the direct result of increasingly radical and violent rhetoric fueled by far-left Democrats who encourage hatred rather than healthy discourse. It is a poison on our nation and every Member of Congress — Republican or Democrat — should fully condemn it when they see it.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator McConnell Advocates for Bourbon Industry During Senate Agriculture Hearing

    US Senate News:

    Source: United States Senator for Kentucky Mitch McConnell

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a hearing of the Senate Agriculture Committee, U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) questioned Chris French, the Acting Associate Chief of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, regarding the White Oak Resilience Act of 2025. Earlier this year, Senators McConnell and Mark Warner (D-VA) introduced the bill to provide greater federal resources and direct research into safeguarding our nation’s White Oak tree population. The bill requires the USDA and the Forest Service to coordinate research and conservation efforts, ensuring the White Oak a stable supply and a viable future.

    Senator McConnell said during the hearing that “our iconic bourbon industry is critical to us. 95 percent of the bourbon in the world is made in Kentucky. The $9 billion industry supports agricultural, forestry, manufacturing, distilling, bottling, construction, and transportation jobs… just to name a few. Kentucky bourbon is synonymous with the White Oak tree, which is used to age our state’s signature spirit in wooden barrels. Unfortunately, 75 percent of the nation’s White Oak population is rated as mature, meaning that there will be a shortage of White Oaks within 30 years. Congress must act to ensure the preservation of this invaluable resource.”

    Senator McConnell asked Mr. French about the Administration’s support of the White Oak Resilience Act. Mr. French said, the USDA Forest Service is “very supportive” of the overall intent of the McConnell/Warner bill, “especially with the loss that we are seeing [of White Oak trees] across the country.”

    White Oak trees are vital to the environmental ecosystem, as well as several trademark American industries, like bourbon and furniture production. Considered the most important hardwood tree in the eastern United States, White Oak trees provide sustenance and shelter for a host of wildlife species across the country.

    White Oak trees can take up to 25 years to reach full maturity, but a lack of seedlings has created an impending shortage that threatens the future of this species and the billions of dollars in economic impact they generate nationwide. The bipartisan legislation will help reverse the depletion of this iconic tree and address the threat its extinction poses to the American economy.

    The White Oak Resilience Act has been included in the Fix Our Forests Act. The Committee is expected to markup the bill later this month.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Saskatchewan Launches Online Wellbeing Course for New and Expecting Parents

    Source: Government of Canada regional news

    Released on May 7, 2025

    The Government of Saskatchewan is supporting a new online therapy course to help new and expecting mothers and their partners who are experiencing mental health difficulties, such as depression or anxiety.

    The Wellbeing Course for New and Expecting Parents is offered through the University of Regina’s Online Therapy Unit with $380,000 in funding from the province. A Non-Birthing Parents Resource is also available through the program and will continue to be enhanced in 2025-26.

    “We want new mothers and their partners to know they are not alone if they face challenges with their mental health,” Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill said. “This free online course offers easy, flexible access to mental health support from anywhere in the province and our government is proud to work with the University of Regina to provide it.”

    The new course started taking clients in February.

    “We are grateful for this important investment from the Government of Saskatchewan,” University of Regina’s Online Therapy Unit Psychology Professor and Director Dr. Heather Hadjistavropoulos said. “Our new eight-week online course provides a much-needed doorway to care, meeting new and expecting parents – both birthing and non-birthing – with compassion, flexibility, and evidence-based support. For those facing barriers like distance, time, or privacy, this funding means we can be there when and where they need us most.”

    Internet-delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (ICBT) was developed at the University of Regina to help Saskatchewan residents experiencing depression, anxiety, substance use, or difficulties coping with chronic health conditions and is delivered in partnership with the Saskatchewan Health Authority. Adults complete educational modules with therapist support.

    Since 2015, almost 14,000 Saskatchewan residents have used ICBT services. This fiscal year, the province is providing more than $1.6 million to support this important service.

    “At the University of Regina, we are committed to research that makes a real difference in people’s lives,” University of Regina’s President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jeff Keshen said. “The launch of the Wellbeing Course for New and Expecting Parents is a powerful example of responding to needs within our community and turning research into action to support mental health, strengthen families, and build more resilient communities across Saskatchewan.”

    “More people should know about and take the course because it is so helpful,” an anonymous client said after ICBT treatment. “(The course) makes you feel that normalcy. These feelings with becoming a parent are normal, and there are solutions.”

    The province has also boosted annual funding to HealthLine 811 by $6.6 million in 2025-26. HealthLine 811 supports nurse and counsellor positions for mental health, addictions and maternal mental health calls. The Ministry of Health is also working with the Saskatchewan Health Authority to establish a maternal mental health coordinator position at 811.

    Under the province’s Action Plan for Mental Health and Addictions, the Ministry of Health committed to develop a new provincial approach to maternal mental health. The goal is to better support new and expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy and after delivery for the wellbeing of mothers, their children and their families.

    Additional work is underway to develop and coordinate maternal mental health supports. This work has also received valuable insight from the Maternal Mental Health Saskatchewan Advisory Group and various community-based organizations.

    Today’s announcement takes place on World Maternal Mental Health Day. It is estimated that two in 10 women face a mental health issue during pregnancy and in the first year following birth.

The Government of Saskatchewan has partnered with Saskatchewan Polytechnic, the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan to launch a new website to host open education resources (OERs) through one central website.

    OERs are free digital resources such as textbooks, manuals and audio/visual files that students and faculty can access for learning, teaching and research purposes. Over the past ten years, Saskatchewan has invested $2.3 million in the development of OERs.

    “Open education resources are important tools that help make post-secondary education more accessible and affordable,” Advanced Education Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. “We appreciate the hard work of faculty members at Saskatchewan’s post-secondary institutions who continue to develop important resources to help students learn, succeed and save money during their studies.”

    OERs lower the cost and increase access to high-quality academic resources for students. Current estimates show that over 125,000 students have saved approximately $18 million through accessing these resources.

    “We have been actively involved in the development and promotion of OERs for several years,” Saskatchewan Polytechnic President and CEO Dr. Larry Rosia said. “Our commitment to OERs stems from our belief in the transformative power of open access educational materials. By making high-quality resources readily available, we aim to enhance learning experiences, reduce the financial burden on students, and foster a culture of sharing and collaboration. This new website is a testament to ongoing efforts to support open education and drive innovation in teaching and learning.”

    “The University of Regina is pleased to be part of the SaskOER network, which will better serve students, educators, and the public by making our quality open educational resources (OERs) more widely available and accessible,” University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jeff Keshen said. “The new SaskOER network also encourages and facilitates greater inter-institutional collaborations on OER projects. We are grateful for the Government of Saskatchewan’s support in creating and publishing quality open educational resources that are an increasingly important part of educational offerings in the province.”

    “The University of Saskatchewan is excited about the enhanced support for all students that is being created through this new open educational resources website,” University of Saskatchewan President and Vice-Chancellor Peter Stoicheff said. “Improving access to education resources online for students, staff and faculty, while also significantly lowering transactional costs, is a significant benefit for all in the post-secondary sector. USask is committed to working closely together with the University of Regina, Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the Government of Saskatchewan on this collaborative project.”

    The new open education resource website is now available at www.saskoer.ca.

  • MIL-OSI USA: On Mother’s Day, Congresswoman Torres Reintroduces Pink Tax Repeal Act to End Unfair Price Hikes on Women

    Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Norma Torres (35th District of California)

    May 11, 2025

    Bill would protect women from paying more than men for the same products and services

    Washington, D.C. –  On Mother’s Day, Congresswoman Norma J. Torres reintroduced the Pink Tax Repeal Act, legislation that would prohibit gender-based price discrimination on consumer goods and services that are substantially similar. The legislation targets unjust pricing practices that disproportionately impact mothers and women.

    “It’s outrageous that in 2025, women, especially mothers, are still paying more than men for everyday items like razors, shampoo, and dry cleaning — simply because they’re marketed to women. This Mother’s Day, we need to acknowledge that the Pink Tax isn’t just about price tags — it’s a matter of respect, equality, and economic justice. No woman, mother, or family should be forced to pay more for the same products and services just because they are a woman.”

    “With this bill, we are sending a strong message: pricing that discriminates against women is unfair, and we will no longer stand by while companies exploit their gender for profit. Women are already suffering under Trump’s economy — facing wage gaps, rising costs, and financial insecurity. We shouldn’t be adding insult to injury by making them pay more simply because they are women.”

    “The attacks on women, mothers, and families are real, and they need to end. This bill is about holding companies accountable and ensuring that all consumers, regardless of gender, are treated fairly. It’s time to end the Pink Tax, once and for all.”

    The Pink Tax Repeal Act would:

    • Prohibit manufacturers and service providers from charging different prices for substantially similar products or services based on gender.
    • Direct the Federal Trade Commission to enforce the legislation as an unfair or deceptive act or practice.
    • Empower state attorneys general to take civil action against violators on behalf of consumers.

    Studies have shown the existence of gender-based pricing disparities, costing women and girls hundreds of thousandsmore over their lifetimes compared to their male counterparts. Women make up as much as 85 percent of consumer purchases in the United States, but pay more for products marketed to women and girls 42 percent of the time. From toys to toiletries, the price differences are often hidden in plain sight and result in economic burden for women.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Scott Statement on President Trump’s FY 2026 Proposed Budget

    Source: {United States House of Representatives – Congressman Bobby Scott (3rd District of Virginia)

    Headline: Scott Statement on President Trump’s FY 2026 Proposed Budget

    “Once again, Trump is weakening our economy and taking money out of working families’ pockets under the guise of ‘efficiency.’ But we know the truth.”

    As originally released by the Committee on Education and Workforce, Democrats

    WASHINGTON Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education andWorkforce, issued the following statement after President Trump released his proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2026.

    “In the first 100 days since Donald Trump has returned to the White House, he has made one thing abundantly clear: he has no plan to improve the lives of students, workers, and families.  Instead, he has decimated federal agencies that provide key services, stripped away workers’ rights, and imposed reckless tariffs that threaten to skyrocket prices.

    “President Trump’s budget proposal is yet another attack on working families.  The budget calls for slashing funding for the Department of Health and Human Services, eliminating Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) funds that support efforts to reduce poverty, and terminating programs such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) that help families heat and cool their homes.  This budget pulls the rug out from families and proposes devastating cuts that would cause immense harm.

    “Additionally, the budget continues the illegal dismantling of the Department of Education, with no suggestion on how this downsized Department will be able to fulfill its statutory duties.  By cutting funding for K-12 schools, eliminating a program that provides child care on campus, eliminating programs that provide direct support services for disadvantaged students that promotes college access, President Trump’s budget proposal does nothing to deliver for students.  Moreover, students deserve safe learning environments.  Trump’s further slashing the Office for Civil Rights is alarming and leaves students who have been victims of discrimination without recourse.

    “Despite the recent economic volatility, President Trump’s budget proposes to double down on its agenda which could harm both workers and small businesses by cutting $3.6 billion from crucial workforce development programs at the Department of Labor.  These programs help displaced workers, veterans, and people with disabilities get trained and connected to employers who need skilled workers to compete in a global economy.  Worse still, the budget fails to explain how it will cut a further $1 billion from the Department of Labor’s budget.  If this remaining $1 billion is slated to come from slashing the capacity of agencies to protect workers from wage theft and deadly workplace hazards, the Administration should be up front about it.  The same is true for the Administration’s failure to come clean on whether it will actually reverse the destruction of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in the Department of Health and Human Services.  Working families depend on these programs for their lives and livelihoods.

    “Once again, President Trump is weakening our economy and taking money out of working families’ pockets under the guise of ‘efficiency.’ But we know the truth— working Americans health and well-being are being sacrificed to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy and the well-connected.”

    Source: {United States House of Representatives – Congressman Bobby Scott (3rd District of Virginia)

    Headline: Scott Statement on April Jobs Report

    As originally released by the Committee on Education and Workforce, Democrats

    WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after theBureau of Labor Statisticsannounced that the economy added 177,000 jobs in April, and the unemployment rate remained the same at 4.2 percent. During President Biden’s first 100 days in office, the economy created 1.7 million jobs.  In President Trump’s first 100 days in office, he created less than half a million jobs, and the economy shrank at a rate of 0.3 percent. Under President Biden, the economy added 16.1 million jobs in total and did not have a single month of seasonally adjusted job loss during his entire term.

    “Within the first 100 days of President Trump’s return to the White House, he has managed to destabilize a thriving economy that he inherited to an extent not seen since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The country’s strong economic recovery out of the pandemic was not guaranteed; it was a result of smart policy decisions made by Congressional Democrats and the Biden-Harris Administration that invested in workers and their families.

    “Trump has demonstrated a disregard for the privacy and welfare of workers across the country, ushering in Elon Musk to fire tens of thousands of federal workers and harvest Americans’ private data.  Trump’s so-called ‘Liberation Day’ imposed arbitrary and extreme tariffs on nearly every country in the world, including uninhabited islands.  Americans watched as their investments and retirement savings drained out of their bank and retirement accounts while the stock market fluctuated wildly.  The price of eggs continues to skyrocket, and many Americans are now relying on‘buy now, pay later’ loans at their weekly grocery trip to keep food on the table.

    “The first 100 days of this administration serve as a warning sign of the real consequences of Trump’s disastrous economic policies and Congressional Republicans’ failure to act.  This week, Committee Republicans advanced a budget that would put the cost of attending college even further out of reach for millions of working families.  Meanwhile, House Republicans in other committees are working to cut nutrition and health care programs for millions of Americans, further jeopardizing the well-being of families.  The economic uncertainty we are seeing has been brought about solely by Trump’s economic decisions.”

    Headline: Scott, McBath Urge Trump DOJ to Preserve “America’s Peacemaker”

    Reps. Scott and McBath lead letter urging Attorney General Bondi to reverse course on plans to eliminate civil rights agency created in the 1960s

    WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) and Congresswoman Lucy McBath (GA-06) led 24 other House Democrats in sending a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi urging her to reverse course on the Trump Administration’s plans to eliminate the Community Relations Service (CRS), which was established by the Civil Rights of 1964. CRS is known as “America’s Peacemaker” and brings together law enforcement and local communities to address the root causes of tension and violence in the wake of a mass shooting or other community conflict.

    “CRS plays a critical role in responding to community conflict and is known as ‘America’s Peacemaker’ with field offices across the country to maximize their accessibility and impact for all communities,” the lawmakers wrote. “CRS brings together law enforcement and local communities to facilitate peaceful resolutions and to help communities develop the capacity to prevent and respond to incidents rooted in hate. We strongly urge you to abandon any plans of dissolving the work of the Community Relations Service.”

    The Members of Congress also highlighted CRS’ recent role in preventing community violence.

    “CRS’s role in reducing tensions in communities extends to campus tensions, and CRS has developed an approach to help campus leaders, students, and law enforcement to find solutions that address the sources of tension and conflict,” the letter states. “Its work also kept places of worship safe after a series of high-profile attacks in recent years by bringing together best practices against these threats. Recently, CRS deployed teams to Milwaukee and Chicago during the Republican and Democratic National Political Conventions in 2024 to work with law enforcement, community groups, and protest groups to reduce tension, prevent violence and ensure that First Amendment rights were protected.”

    CRS been expanded several times via subsequent bipartisan laws, including the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act signed into law by President Bush in 2008.

    “We are aware that during the previous Trump Administration there was a similar effort to abandon the valuable work of the Community Relations Service by recommending its elimination in budget proposals and reducing staffing. As the administration once again considers unilaterally eliminating an agency established by Congress and enshrined into law, we strongly urge you to reconsider,” the letter concludes.

    The letter was also signed by: Representatives Bennie Thompson (MS-02), Nydia Velázquez (NY-07),  Danny Davis (IL-07), Betty McCollum (MN-04), Steve Cohen (TN-09), Eleanor Norton (DC-AL), Yvette Clarke (NY-09), Judy Chu (CA-28), Robin Kelly (IL-02), Terri Sewell (AL-07), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Henry Johnson (GA-04), Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08), Donald Beyer (VA-08), Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), Jonathan Jackson (IL-01), Jennifer McClellan (VA-04), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-06), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05), Nikema Williams (GA-05), Shomari Figures (AL-02), LaMonica McIver (NJ-10), and Summer Lee (PA-12).

    Full text of the letter can be found HEREand below.

    Dear Attorney General Bondi:

     We write to you concerning recent reports that you are considering a significant restructuring of the Department of Justice (DOJ) that includes eliminating the Community Relations Service (CRS). CRS plays a critical role in responding to community conflict and is known as “America’s Peacemaker” with field offices across the country to maximize their accessibility and impact for all communities. CRS brings together law enforcement and local communities to facilitate peaceful resolutions and to help communities develop the capacity to prevent and respond to incidents rooted in hate. We strongly urge you to abandon any plans of dissolving the work of the Community Relations Service.

    CRS was established by Title X of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the scope of its valuable work has been expanded several times via subsequent bipartisan laws, including the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act (Pub. L. 110-334) signed into law by President Bush in 2008. Violence can shatter a community. Resolving the root of violence requires a solution that lies beyond the courtroom. The role of the Community Relations Service as neither investigator nor prosecutor but as a peacemaker has been credited with averting violence after “Bloody Sunday” in 1965, continuing to present day.

    CRS’s role in reducing tensions in communities extends to campus tensions, and CRS has developed an approach to help campus leaders, students, and law enforcement to find solutions that address the sources of tension and conflict. Its work has also kept places of worship safe after a series of high-profile attacks in recent years by bringing together best practices against these threats. Recently, CRS deployed teams to Milwaukee and Chicago during the Republican and Democratic National Political Conventions in 2024 to work with law enforcement, community groups, and protest groups to reduce tension, prevent violence and ensure that First Amendment rights were protected.

    The work of the conciliation specialists as “peacemakers” is unique and cannot be easily replicated or undertaken by another department. CRS supports state and local government officials, law enforcement officers, community leaders, schools, faith leaders, and others to resolve and prevent community conflict. Their work improves police and community relationships, thereby improving public safety.

    We are aware that during the previous Trump Administration there was a similar effort to abandon the valuable work of the Community Relations Service by recommending its elimination in budget proposals and reducing staffing. As the administration once again considers unilaterally eliminating an agency established by Congress and enshrined into law, we strongly urge you to reconsider.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Scott, Connolly Demand Answers on Trump’s Attacks on Civil Rights Protections for Workers

    Source: {United States House of Representatives – Congressman Bobby Scott (3rd District of Virginia)

    Headline: Scott, Connolly Demand Answers on Trump’s Attacks on Civil Rights Protections for Workers

    “Cuts of this magnitude, combined with the halting of OFCCP’s EO 11246 enforcement activity, will leave workers increasingly vulnerable to discrimination and unfair hiring practices when they pursue work with federal contractors.”

    As originally released by the Committee on Education and Workforce, Democrats

    WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03), Ranking Member of the Committee on Education and Workforce, and Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (VA-11), Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Catherine Eschbach, Director of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) regarding the Trump Administration’s drastic cuts to OFCCP staff.  These cuts will leave millions of federal contract workers vulnerable to discrimination in the workplace, and without the resources to advocate for themselves.

    “Americans deserve fairness and respect in any workplace, especially workplaces funded by taxpayer dollars in service to the country, yet these actions undermine equal opportunity for federal contract workers and leave them vulnerable to discrimination,” wrote the Ranking Members.  “To ensure Congress and the American people understand the full impact of the Trump Administration’s actions to dismantle OFCCP, we request information on the Agency’s operations, capacity, and ability to uphold its historic mission to safeguard the rights of workers.”

    The OFCCP was established in 1965 shortly following President Lyndon B. Johnson’s issuance of EO 11246, with the aim of protecting federal contract workers, who currently comprise one fifth of the U.S. labor force, from unlawful discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin.  On January 21, 2025, President Trump revoked EO 11246, leaving federal contract workers vulnerable to discrimination in the workplace and instructing OFCCP to cease its current work to investigate federal contractors for unfair working practices.

    In accordance with the Committees’ oversight responsibilities, the Ranking Members demanded that Director Eschbach provide Congress, and the American people, vital information regarding pending cases that were abandoned after President Trump rescinded EO 11246, as well as insight into the future of the agency and its ability to protect workers from discrimination with extremely limited staff.

  • MIL-OSI USA: On Workers’ Memorial Day, Reps. Scott, Courtney Lead Bill to Improve Workplace Safety

    Source: {United States House of Representatives – Congressman Bobby Scott (3rd District of Virginia)

    Headline: On Workers’ Memorial Day, Reps. Scott, Courtney Lead Bill to Improve Workplace Safety

    As originally released by the Committee on Education and Workforce, Democrats

    WASHINGTON – Today, on Workers’ Memorial Day, Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) and Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02), a senior member of the House Committee on Education and Workforce reintroduced the Protecting America’s Workers Actas the Trump Administration dismantles workplace protections.

    This bill would meaningfully strengthen and modernize the Occupation Safety and Health Act (OSH-Act) for the first time in over 50 years by ensuring employers promptly correct hazardous working conditions, protect whistleblowers from retaliation, and hold unscrupulous employers accountable for violations that cause illness, serious injury, or death to workers.

    Since January 20, the Trump Administration and Elon Musk’s DOGE have proposed closing 11 Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) field offices, slashed funding and staff at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and dismantled systems that enable workers to advocate for safer workplaces.

    “Today, on Workers Memorial Day, we are called upon to honor the workers who have been killed or injured on the job and to prevent future tragedies by making workplaces safer,” said Rep. Bobby Scott (VA-03), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Education and Workforce. “The Protecting America’s Workers Act makes long overdue improvements to the enforcement provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, expands coverage to millions of workers who are currently excluded from the law’s protections, and strengthens whistleblower protections. These reforms are critical to deterring the most serious violations that endanger workers’ safety on the job. Passing this bill would be a major step toward ensuring our nation’s workers can do their jobs and come home safely to their families at the end of the day.”

    “While the Occupation Safety and Health Act has helped protect Americans for generations, too many workers are still facing injury, illness, or death. Now, instead of improving workplace safety which we know is still under threat, the Trump Administration and Elon Musk’s DOGE are going in the complete opposite direction by slashing the programs and agencies dedicated to protecting workers on the job. Congress must pass the Protecting America’s Workers Act to ensure workers can return home to their families safely,” said Courtney.

    The legislation is particularly important to the eastern Connecticut community after six workers died at an explosion at the Kleen Energy Systems power plant in Middletown, Connecticut in 2010.

    “I’ve seen the devastation that unsafe workplaces can bring upon a family. Fifteen years ago, an explosion at an energy plant in Connecticut left six workers dead and dozens injured. Some of the workers who died were my friends, and I watched as their families fought for justice and accountability for years afterwards. Their story, and the horrifying reality that hundreds of workers die each day as a result of hazards faced at work, is why I am a champion for the Protecting America’s Workers Act,” Courtney added.

    Specifically, the Protecting America’s Workers Act will:

    • Protect millions of workers by expanding OSHA coverage to 8.1 million state and local government employees in 24 states who currently have no right to a safe workplace;

    • Ensure worker safety is protectedby mandating that employers correct hazardous conditions in a timely manner;

    • Reinstate an employer’s ongoing obligation to maintain accurate records of work-related illness and injuries, and reverses President Trump’s first-term Congressional Review Act resolution that undermined OSHA’s ability to hold employers accountable who violate requirements to record workplace injuries and illnesses;

    • Improve whistleblower protectionfor workers who face retaliation for calling attention to unsafe working conditions;

    • Update obsolete consensus standardsthat were adopted when OSHA was first enacted in 1970;

    • Deter “high gravity” violationsby providing authority for increased civil monetary penalties for serious or willful violations that cause death or serious bodily injury;

    • Expand injury and illness records that employers are required to maintain and report in order to enable OSHA to more effectively target unsafe workplaces;

    • Authorize felony penalties against employers whoknowinglycommit OSHA violationsthat result in death or serious bodily injury and extend such penalties to corporate officers and directors;

    • Require OSHA to investigate all cases of death and serious injuriesthat occur within a place of employment;

    • Establish rights for families of workers who were killed on the jobby giving them the right to meet with OSHA investigators, receive copies of citations, and to have an opportunity to make a statement before any settlement negotiations; and

    • Improve protections for workers in state OSHA plansby allowing the Secretary of Labor to assert concurrent enforcement authority in those states where the state OSHA program fails to meet minimum requirements needed to protect workers’ safety and health.

    The bill is co-sponsored by Reps. Omar, Bonamici, and Norcross.

    BOSTON — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, apprehended an illegally present Dominican national charged with armed robbery in Massachusetts. Officers with ICE Boston and agents with DEA New England and ATF Boston arrested Emerson Esteban Arias-Polanco, 27, in Boston March 20.

    “Emerson Esteban Arias-Polanco illegally entered the United States and apparently decided to commit an armed robbery while wearing a mask,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde. “He clearly represents a threat to our Massachusetts residents. It is regrettable that the Norfolk County House of Corrections decided to ignore our immigration detainer and released Arias-Polanco back into the community. ICE Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing alien offenders from the streets of New England.”

    Arias-Polanco illegally entered the United States on an unknown date, at an unknown location, without being inspected, admitted or paroled by a U.S. immigration official.

    Officers with the Dedham Police Department arrested Arias-Polanco Nov. 30, 2023, and charged him with armed robbery — masked. On May 3, 2024, his case was elevated to Norfolk County Superior Court, and he was indicted for the charge.

    ICE Boston lodged an immigration detainer against Arias-Polanco with the Norfolk County House of Corrections Jan. 5, 2025. However, the detention facility refused to honor the ICE detainer and released Arias-Polanco from custody.
