  • MIL-OSI USA: School of Nursing’s Sigma Theta Tau Mu Chapter Inducts 69 New Members

    On April 27, UConn School of Nursing’s Sigma Theta Tau Mu Chapter held their annual induction ceremony. Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as nursing professionals and community leaders, were offered membership to the Honor Society. 

    In 1955, the UConn School of Nursing chartered Mu Chapter as the 11th chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing. There are now over 540 chapters internationally. 

    President Elizabeth Mayerson, DNP, RN, APRN, FNP-BC, CNE, presided over the ceremony. She explained “in the name of our honor society, Sigma represents love, Theta represents courage, and Tau represents honor. Our crest represents wisdom and discernment, service, professional endeavor, strength of leadership, and knowledge. Our key, which is represented on Sigma’s pin, denotes the satisfaction of professional life, the six founders, the lamp of knowledge, and our charge.”

    Based in Indianapolis, Sigma Theta Tau promotes scholarship and research in the field of nursing. The Mu Chapter hosts local meetings year-round and sends delegates to the society’s annual conferences at the regional, national, and international levels. It also supports exceptional research proposals through monetary awards provided by both the Mu Chapter and Sigma Theta Tau International. 

    “This is a really important and exciting part of your nursing journey,” Dean Victoria Vaughan Dickson, Ph.D., RN, FAHA, FHFSA, FAAN, shared with the inductees. “Many of you, if not all of you will be graduating soon, and that will mark you on your professional journey. This is a recognition of the academic excellence that you have brought to the School of Nursing, your commitment to service, and your leadership that we anticipate will continue throughout your professional career.” 

    The keynote address was delivered by Judith Hahn, Ph.D., RN, executive director of nursing professional practice and education at Yale New Haven Health System. She is also a graduate of the UConn SoN Ph.D. program.  

    “When I say leadership, many of you will think about the boardroom or wearing a managerial badge. But let me be clear, leadership in nursing starts long before the title does, it starts with a mindset, a commitment, a refusal to settle for average,” Hahn stated. “Which brings me to the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team. Both groups are forged in pressure, both are grounded in discipline, and most must be prepared to lead, not someday, but every day.”

    In 2025, the induction class consisted of 44 undergraduate students, 20 master’s students, and five doctoral students. Additionally, Sigma Mu Chapter recognized Nancy Dupont, UConn Health’s director of epidemiology, as a nurse leader.  

    “So as a member, I welcome you, as Dean, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations for your accomplishments, and I also want to say that we are all proud of you as UConn nurses, and we look forward to seeing the many important and meaningful contributions you will make over the course of your career, both as a nurse, and now as a Sigma Honor Society member,” remarked Dickson.

    New Digital Resource to Support People with Disabilities

    The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services today announced the launch of a digital resource to help people with disabilities in the workforce. North Carolina DB101 was guided by beneficiaries and their experiences with the goal to simplify how to apply for, access and understand public benefits. This new resource will help North Carolinians navigate programs such as social security disability insurance, food and nutrition services and Medicaid. 

    “The world of public benefits can be complex, with regulations and processes that are different based on funding and what state you live in,” said NC Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai. “DB101 is a long-awaited resource that will help users cut through the complexities of receiving disability assistance to ensure every person can easily access their benefits.”

    DB101 provides comprehensive, state-specific information on benefits programs, rules around work and work incentives in North Carolina. Using the site’s Estimator Tool, users can calculate the potential impact of earning income on their benefits to help them plan for the future and set goals for work.  DB101 also provides answers to frequently asked questions about benefits, tips on how to avoid common pitfalls, information on how to save money while working and resources to help people with disabilities prepare for work.  

    “Many people with disabilities fear they’ll lose needed health care and other disability benefits if they go to work,” said Kathie Smith, Director for the NCDHHS Division of Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities. “DB101 helps people with disabilities and service providers understand the connections between work and benefits.”

    NCDHHS provides North Carolinians the tools they need to pursue their goals for competitive employment, self-sufficiency and more independent living at home and in their communities.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Marshall on Fox Business: No Tax on Overtime Is Good for Hardworking Americans

    Washington – U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas) today joined Kudlow on Fox Business to discuss the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act, the bill he introduced today to cut taxes on overtime wages and deliver on one of President Donald Trump’s key promises to give tax relief to lower and middle-class American workers.
    Senator Marshall also discussed the “No Tax on Tips” proposal and the timeline for the Senate to get President Trump’s “One, Big, Beautiful” budget reconciliation bill across the finish line.

    Highlights from Senator Marshall’s interview include:        
    On the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act:
    “We have to get his One Big, Beautiful Bill across the floor, and we have to prioritize President Trump’s priorities, which includes this no tax on overtime. This is something good for hard-working Americans, those people who bring a lunch pail to work.
    “Look, we’re going to limit it to their first $10,000 for an individual, $20,000 for a couple. What that could mean is $4,000 more of take-home pay for those people out there who are working extra hard to make this economy grow.
    “I think it could be something that actually improves the growth of America. We have numerous jobs back home that we can’t fill because we don’t have enough people, at least, who are qualified to do them. This will give us a chance for them to make a little extra money and also put some money back into the economy.”
    On ensuring Americans can keep more of their hard-earned money:
    “I remember my first job. I was actually working in a sale barn, sorting heifers and steers. We would work 12-16 hours a day, and we got that overtime check. And to my surprise, the government was taking out more than they did on the other part of it, and it never made any sense to me. So, it is a big chunk of change. Again, a person may be making $80,000-$100,000 a year if they get to keep $4,000 more of their hard-earned money, then that’s a win for hard workers across the country.”
    On No Tax on Tips:
    “We’re going to get that one across the finish line… We need to keep the price tag, I think, on my overtime wages, under $100 billion over 10 years. And I’m going to guess the no tax on tips is the same place as well, but President Trump wants it. He is the person that’s signing this bill, so we get to use his priorities, and I’m looking forward to making that happen.”
    On getting President Trump’s “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” across the finish line:
    “I think the next step is for the House to give us what they can get passed. I think the big issue for them is, how much are they willing to cut on the spending. They need to probably get to $2 trillion of… savings for Americans in order for us to accomplish all of President Trump’s goals.
    “When we see that, then we can move much more quickly. We got to be prepared, though, for whatever different softballs or fastballs they throw at us. I still think our goal is to get something to the president’s desk by July the fourth.”

    Washington –U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas), member of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, today led a press conference alongside U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama), Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska), and Jim Justice (R-West Virginia) to highlight their bill, the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act. 
    This legislation thoughtfully puts pen to paper to deliver on President Donald Trump’s key campaign promise to give tax relief to American workers. Specifically, the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act creates an income tax deduction for overtime wage earners, targeted to help lower and middle-income Americans. Senator Marshall is advocating for this legislation to be included in the FY2025 budget reconciliation package.

    Highlights from the press conference include:
    What inspired Senator Marshall to introduce the legislation:
    “I was born and raised on a farm. My first job off the farm was at a sale barn outside of El Dorado, Kansas. Every Saturday, the farmers bring in their cattle. We would sell 1,000 head, 2,000, or 3,000 head on a Saturday. A 12-hour day would be a short day there. Many days my brother and I worked 24 – 36 hours at a time. But the greatest thing I looked forward to was that time and a half after eight hours.
    “And I just remember like it was yesterday – I was making $2.30 an hour, that was the standard wage there at the sale barn… that time and a half overtime really incentivized a young person who was looking forward to buying his first car. But to my surprise, that first time I got my paycheck with that overtime, I was shocked to see how much money the government was taking out of my paycheck…”
    Senator Marshall shares stories of Kansans who would benefit from this legislation:
    “I want to share the story of a couple other people here from back home. The first is Steve Hewitt, and Steve is here in his UPS uniform. He works for the Teamsters local 696, in Topeka, Kansas, obviously a UPS driver. And this is a quote from Steve, ‘Working overtime means I’m spending more time on the road and away from my family. But thanks to this bill, being able to keep more my paycheck in my pocket would be life changing – not just for me, but for blue collar workers across the nation.’
    “The other one is from Brandon Switzer – a corrections officer at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Teamsters, local 696 in Topeka, Kansas, again. And this is a quote from Brandon, ‘As the Chief Steward and a corrections specialist at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections, I believe being able to deduct overtime pay from taxes would allow workers to better afford day-to-day living. New legislation like this would also allow workers like me to possibly contribute more to our deferred compensation plan.’
    “The people that were constantly reaching out to me were hard working men and women saying we need someone fighting for us, someone fighting for Main Street, not just Wall Street. And I’m so proud of President Trump that he’s made this a priority, to be the President for the hard-working Americans, for people who carry a lunch pail to work.”
    On why this legislation is critical:
    “This is one of President Trump’s priorities, and it’s one of my priorities as well. You know what this would mean to a family, and I’ll turn it over to Coach Tuberville. Look, the Trump tax cuts – if we don’t make that permanent, families back home are going to get a tax increase of $2,000 a year. So, if we let this go off the books, that’s going to cost Kansas taxpayers $2,000 a year. Potentially, for a person that’s working overtime, they could save another $4,000 on taxes if this legislation is signed into law by the president. So, to me, this is like a $6,000 opportunity for hard-working folks back home. If you’re making 80, 90, or $100,000 a year back home, $6,000 is nothing to sneeze at. That will go a long way in taking care of Joe Biden’s inflation.”
    On the additional benefits of the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act:
    “I think that we should incentivize hard work, like several of us have said, addressing work shortages. I don’t know back in your states, but all I hear is we don’t have enough employees for the jobs we have. And I see American manufacturing companies starting to really spike back home as well. And again, their big challenge is a lack of people for the jobs we have. The Tax Foundation estimates this will increase economic growth by 0.2 to 0.5% annually. So, I think it actually will help grow the economy and pay for itself in its own way.”
    On how this legislation would be paid for:
    “We should never look at any issue just in a silo. I look at this one, big, beautiful bill, and think that we need to come up with $2 trillion in savings for American taxpayers. And then I think if there’s an opportunity to take some of those savings and reward hard-working men and women that we should do that. And much like the Trump tax cuts, I really think that this will accelerate the economy and add to the GDP.”
    On government revenues and spending:
    “I still think, to me, there’s even a bigger discussion here, is when the appropriation process is starting, is America willing to go on a diet and get off this sugar high that we’ve been on the last four years. We need to reprioritize where we’re spending money. We have a spending problem, much more so than a tax revenue problem.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: HAGEMAN’S HOUSE NATURAL RESOURCE COMMITTEE SETS AMERICA ON A PATH OF INCREASED ENERGY AND MINERAL PRODUCTION AND WORKS TO BLOCK THE BUFFALO AND ROCK SPRINGS RMPs

    Washington, D.C. – In a House Natural Resource Committee markup yesterday, as part of the budget reconciliation process, Congresswoman Hageman worked with her colleagues to generate $18.5 billion in revenue for the United States by bolstering the extraction of energy and mineral resources in states like Wyoming. Now passed by the Committee, the next step is consideration by the Budget Committee.  
     

    “America is $36 trillion and counting in debt, and Congressional Republicans are working to reconcile the budget to advance reforms which put us back on the right track. Wyoming can generate extensive revenues through our rich energy portfolio, but has long been stifled by bad actors peddling a crazed ‘green energy’ political agenda rather than leveraging our energy capital to better the lives of everyday Americans. Through this markup, we are answering President Trump’s call to unleash American energy through a litany of proposals that will mandate oil, gas, and coal leasing, lower coal royalty rates to pre-Inflation Reduction Act levels, promote federal mineral leasing, mandate coal lease sales and stipulate the requirements for such lease sales, roll-back the federal coal moratorium, and more.” Hageman said, “Included in this package, of incredibly high importance to Wyomingites, is the prohibition of the implementation of the Buffalo and Rock Springs Resource Management Plans.” 
     

    Congresswoman Hageman worked with local County Commissioners from across Wyoming who submitted letters expressing the disparate impact of the Resource Management Plans on their counties and the communities within. Hageman delivered the letters to the Committee as part of the hearing and to serve as direct evidence from her constituents that this action must take place.  
     

    She concluded, “I could not be more proud of my colleagues on the Natural Resources Committee who took a stand today to allow for a more prosperous tomorrow. Our future is promising and by getting government out of the way, we can expect affordable, reliable and dispatchable energy resources and a robust mineral portfolio – mined right here in America – long into the future.”

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Help Kids be Kids: supporting youth mental wellness

    [. Youth at risk of mental health challenges can benefit significantly from programs that focus on building resiliency, mental wellness and social connection, such as those offered through the Youth Suicide Prevention Grant Program.  

    Alberta’s government invested an additional $1 million into Youth Suicide Prevention Grants, for a total of $4 million over 2024-26. This means more organizations received grant funding, which increases access to programming for youth across the province. 

    So far, more than 2,100 youth have been supported through programs that provide spaces for young people to develop life skills and build long-term resilience. Initiatives include after-school programs, cultural camps and events, and educational workshops.

    “Supporting innovative mental health programs for youth is not only vital to improving individual well-being, but also strengthens families, schools and communities. I’m grateful to partner with community organizations that provide young people with useful tools and strategies that help them recognize and manage their thoughts and feelings.”

    “When someone is struggling, we want them to know there is help available. Suicide prevention is a priority for our government, which is why I am grateful for our cross-ministry approach for better mental health and well-being for Alberta children and youth.”

    Programs funded through the Youth Suicide Prevention Program offer unique supports for diverse communities. For example, grant funding for Free Play for Kids Inc. supports the organization to offer the expanded Free to Play: Wellbeing, Resiliency & Belonging for Refugee Youth program, providing young newcomers in Edmonton opportunities to gain social, emotional and mental health skills and connecting them with peers through sport.

    “Every child needs a safe space where they can play, belong and grow. Here, they make new friends and find role models in the caring leaders who run the programs. These relationships are so critical in supporting mental health and well being. We are extremely grateful to Minister Turton and the Alberta government for supporting us in creating these spaces of support.”

    Alberta’s government recognizes Mental Health Week from May 5 to 11, and is committed to continuing to expand access to supports and services to young people struggling with mental health and addiction challenges. This includes investments to increase access to supports in schools and in the community, support youth-focused online and telephone resources and ensure mental health and addiction services are available through Recovery Alberta.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Judge Giles Rejects Trump Administration Forum Shopping In Badar Khan Suri Case

    Congressman Don Beyer (D-VA) today issued the following statement welcoming a ruling by Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles rejecting the Trump Administration’s attempts to remove jurisdiction over the case of Beyer’s constituent, Dr. Badar Khan Suri, to Texas, where it whisked him after he was detained by masked ICE agents outside his home in Arlington, Virginia:

    “Dr. Badar Khan Suri is in Texas right now because the Trump Administration whisked him there as quickly as it could to get a more favorable judicial environment to further trample his rights and the Constitution. This was blatant forum shopping, and Judge Giles wisely saw through it and rejected the administration’s feeble lies and post hoc excuses for its actions, which as she noted mirror similar behavior in other recent, high-profile cases including those of Mahmoud Khalil and Rümeysa Öztürk.

    “The Trump Administration’s tactic of rushing students and scholars to distant detention centers to seek more favorable jurisdictions for consideration of their cases has now been rejected by multiple federal judges. This practice has likely been organized, coordinated, and directed by a central authority in the administration. If what the administration was doing here was above board, they would be transparent and honest about it; instead they have been secretive and defended the practice with outright lies. They are sending multiple signals that they have something to hide in their conduct of these cases, and Congress should investigate to find out why. I will have more to come on that subject soon.”

    Beyer met with Dr. Khan Suri’s counsel last week and attended his hearing before Judge Giles on Thursday, which resulted in this ruling. Beyer subsequently wrote to the Acting Director of ICE on Monday seeking reevaluation of Dr. Khan Suri’s status, including consideration of his eligibility for release and alteration of his custody status, which is currently classified as “high-risk.” He is the co-lead of Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman’s recently introduced ICE Visibility Act.

    Dr. Badar Khan Suri is a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University who lives in Arlington, Virginia. He was in the country legally on a visa when he was detained without charges on orders from the Trump Administration in March by masked agents outside his home in Rosslyn, and moved to a series of prisons and detention centers, ultimately ending in Texas. He is still being held there today, over 1,300 miles away from his wife, who is a U.S. citizen, and three young children. According to Khan Suri’s counsel, “His son spent days crying uncontrollably following his father’s disappearance, and has now stopped speaking.” Dr. Khan Suri has never been charged with a crime and the government has never produced evidence that he did anything wrong.

    In Thursday’s hearing, Dr. Khan Suri’s attorneys sought his return to Virginia, while the government sought to remove the case’s jurisdiction to Texas. Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles sought further information from the government on their justification for moving him to Texas, and the government claimed Dr. Khan Suri was removed to Texas to prevent overcrowding at a Virginia detention center. Yet, as Judge Giles pointed out, Khan Suri had a room with a bed to himself in Virginia whereas, for the first 10 days of his detention in Texas he “was forced to sleep on the floor of the television room with the TV blaring nonstop and the lights on 24/7.”

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Angus King (I-ME) and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) introduced bipartisan legislation to curb violence against health care workers. The Save Healthcare Workers Act would help deter and prevent violence against health care workers by making it easier to prosecute individuals who commit violence against hospital employees.
    The legislation would establish fines and federal criminal penalties for persons convicted of assaulting hospital personnel, with increased penalties for the use of deadly or dangerous weapons or infliction of bodily harm. These penalties would provide hospital staff with the same existing protections given to flight attendants and airport workers. If passed, the Save Healthcare Workers Act would be the first federal law to protect threatened hospital employees — including those who work in states that have not enacted laws imposing penalties for harming healthcare workers.
    “Maine’s health care workers deserve respect and appreciation for the work they do to keep our communities safe and healthy — there should never be injuries in the lines of duty for those delivering care,” said Senator King. “As violence against health care workers rises, we have a duty to protect the men and women serving in hospitals and health care facilities.     NOGALES, Ariz. — At an interagency press event flanked by a large display of seized weapons, senior area leadership from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona announced significant achievement in the interdiction of weapons and ammunition, investigation and prosecution of weapons traffickers.

    “Weapon smuggling is not just a serious crime — it fuels violence on both sides of the border and severely undermines our nations laws,” said Deputy Special Agent in Charge for ICE Homeland Security Investigations Arizona Ray Rede. “Only through close coordination with partnered law enforcement agencies sharing intelligence, can we all work together to dismantle the networks behind weapons trafficking to keep our communities safe.”

    “Our frontline CBP officers and agents continue to serve as the tip of the spear and their dedicated efforts through a series of operations such as Desert Lightning contributed to the successful interdiction of a substantial amount of weapons and ammunition this year,” said CBP Director, Field Operations Guadalupe Ramirez, Tucson Field Office. “The designation of the major Mexico drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations will ensure long, terrorism-enhanced sentences for those arrested and convicted pursuant to these interdiction efforts.”

    “The partnerships witnessed today show that we are unified to end firearms trafficking and the growing threat posed by Transnational Criminal Organizations,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Brendan Iber, Phoenix Field Division. “Stolen and straw purchased firearms pose a substantial threat to public safety and law enforcement. ATF will continue to track down firearms traffickers and hold them accountable.”

    “The U.S. Attorney’s Office stands ready to support our law enforcement partners and prosecute weapons trafficking cases, especially those that support Foreign Terrorist Organizations engaged in violent activity throughout Mexico and other countries,” said United States Attorney Timothy Courchaine, District of Arizona. “These efforts are already underway. Our goal is to stop this illegal activity and dismantle the organizations that the trafficking supports.”

    Firearm seizures, along with other notable enforcement actions, investigations and prosecutions were announced at a press event held in Nogales, Ariz. with ICE HSI Deputy Special Agent in Charge Ray Rede, SAC Arizona, CBP Director, Field Operations Guadalupe Ramirez, Tucson Field Office, ATF Special Agent in Charge Brendan Iber, Phoenix Field Division, U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona Timothy Courchaine as they flanked a table of seized weapons, grenades and ammunition.

    CBP conducted a series of outbound operations targeting southbound vehicular, pedestrian and commercial traffic at land border ports along the Southwest Border utilizing not only the skills and experience of CBP officers but technology, to include currency sniffing canines and nonintrusive imaging system technology. CBP officers also enlisted the support of Border Patrol agents, state and local law enforcement officers to serve as a force multiplier to augment these operations.

    Such examinations have successfully stopped child abduction, interdicted criminals fleeing prosecution, interdicted illegal contraband such as controlled substances, precursor drugs, and arms, and uncovered myriad other violations involving currency reporting requirements, stolen vehicles, trade, and immigration.

    CBP in collaboration with our federal and international partners during these outbound enforcement operations identified new targets and trafficking trends, concealment methods, and encouraged robust information and intelligence sharing to drive both U.S. and Mexican enforcement operations on the SWB.

    In addition, this cadre representing the agencies who interdict, investigate and prosecute outbound weapons smuggling attempts emphasized that the consequences for such smuggling activity have been greatly enhanced due to a recent designation by President Trump of major cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. These enhancements will result in lengthier prison sentences for those convicted of these crimes.

    On Jan. 20, President Donald J. Trump issued Executive Order 14157, entitled Designating Cartels and Other Organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Foreign Terrorists under the laws of the U.S., including the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 USC 1101 et seq. and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, 50 USC 1701 et seq under which certain international cartels will be designated as foreign terrorist organizations.

    On Feb. 20, the U.S. Department of State announced the designation of Tren de Aragua, Mara Salvatrucha, Cártel de Sinaloa, Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, Cártel del Noreste, La Nueva Familia Michoacana, Cártel de Golfo, and Cárteles Unidos as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists.

Always available, ageless and adaptable to any setting, these virtual figures enable brands to create immersive, cost-effective campaigns that resonate with today’s digital-first consumers.

    Virtual influencers — digitally created personas used to provide entertainment, generate content and endorse brands — are becoming increasingly influential, especially among Gen Z and digital-first audiences.

    These virtual figures vary in form: some, like Lil Miquela and Shudu, are entirely computer-generated, while others, such as Hatsune Miku, incorporate human elements like voice or motion.

    Hybrid influencers blend real and virtual components, allowing for brand-specific customization. These virtual influencers boost brand visibility, drive engagement and influence market performance.

    Real persons, virtual personas

    The estimate for global influencer market size for 2024 was valued at over US$24 billion and is projected to grow to over US$32 billion in 2025. The rise of virtual influencers is particularly prominent in Asia.

    This trend is also reshaping the US$2.5 trillion modelling industry, according to The Business of Fashion. AI-generated avatars and digital clones enable brands to cut production costs and accelerate campaign development. As a result, companies such as Levi Strauss & Co. are partnering with AI modelling firms to integrate these virtual personas into their marketing strategies.

    Digital twins

    Digital twins — virtual replicas of real people — are gaining traction in marketing to enhance personalization, streamline content creation and deepen customer engagement.

    In the fashion world, they provide a means to maintain a sense of human connection while using AI for precision and volume purposes. Fast-fashion retailer H&M recently introduced AI-generated digital twins of real-life models for advertising and social media content. Positioned as a creative and operational aid rather than a replacement for human talent, the initiative has ignited industry-wide debate.

    While the brand highlights the advantages — lower production costs and faster catalogue development — some critics have raised ethical concerns regarding representation and transparency.

    These digital twins fall into the category of “front-of-camera” tools: static avatars used in visual content without independent personas or social media presence. Unlike virtual influencers, they do not interact with audiences or build followings. Instead, they function strictly as visual stand-ins for traditional models, who are compensated for the use of their likenesses, similar to conventional campaigns.

    As these avatars do not speak, endorse or engage directly with consumers, they remain subject to traditional advertising regulations — not influencer marketing laws.

    Digital models are used for operational efficiency: testing and refining creative strategies before rollout, reducing costs and potentially offering immersive digital experiences to enhance customer connection and brand loyalty.

    Authenticity and other challenges

    In July 2024, fast-fashion retailer Mango launched its first advertising campaign featuring AI-generated avatars to promote a limited-edition collection for teenaged girls.

    These AI-generated influencers and digital twins introduce numerous ethical and legal challenges. These innovations raise difficult questions about the displacement of human talent — including models, make-up artists, hairstylists and photographers — and broader implications for creative industries.

    Key concerns centre on consent and compensation. The unauthorized use of an individual’s likeness, even in digital form, poses a risk of exploitation and underscores the importance of clear standards and protections. The legal landscape regarding image rights and intellectual property is still evolving, which makes compliance both essential and complex.

    As the lines between reality and digital fabrication blur, brands risk eroding consumer trust. The authenticity that audiences value can be undermined if AI-generated content seems deceptive or inauthentic.

    Companies must tread carefully, balancing innovation with transparency.

    Diversity is another critical issue. While AI offers customization, it can also perpetuate biases or create an illusion of inclusivity without genuine representation.

    To ensure ethical integration, transparency is crucial. Brands must clearly disclose when digital models appear in campaigns. These digital representations should encompass a wide variety of demographics to genuinely promote inclusivity and engage with a broader audience.

    Establishing ethical and legal safeguards is equally important. Creating digital clones requires explicit consent and careful attention to intellectual property rights. Without clear guidelines and permissions, brands risk violating privacy, misusing likenesses and facing legal repercussions.

  • MIL-OSI Global: The King’s speech: The world will be watching when Charles opens Canada’s Parliament

    Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited King Charles to embark upon a Royal Visit to Canada and open the new session of Parliament on May 27.

    The visit comes at a significant moment in Canadian history. Carney has just had his first meeting with Donald Trump, pushing back unequivocally against the American president’s continuing calls for Canada to become the 51st state.

    In their Oval Office news conference, Trump once again declared his desire to erase “the artificially drawn line” separating the U.S. and Canada and to annex Canada, as Carney made clear that would never happen.

    At the same time, Trump has been looking to reshape the global economic order through the use of tariffs on imported goods. Even though Canadians are fighting back with consumer and travel boycotts, many are also worrying about the future due to Trump’s actions.

    Amid this turmoil, the King’s timely visit could be a powerful show of support for Canadians, whose identity has often wilted in the shadow of its powerful but formerly protective American neighbour. The presence of the King will undoubtedly generate global attention, which could provide reassurances to Canadians that they’re not alone.

    Delivering the Speech from the Throne

    Charles is King of Canada and the country’s official head of state. This will be his 20th trip to Canada, but his first since becoming King in September 2022.

    In day-to-day government business, his duties are carried out by the Governor General. These include opening Parliament and delivering the Speech from the Throne, which outlines the government’s agenda.

    The King’s visit will mark the first time the sovereign has personally delivered the Speech from the Throne since Queen Elizabeth did so in 1957. She also opened a session of Canada’s 30th Parliament in 1977.

    Canada has maintained close ties with the United Kingdom. It still uses the Westminster parliamentary system. But Canada has also worked to establish its own national identity.

    In 1982, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau repatriated Canada’s Constitution. This replaced the British North America Act and established Canada’s full political independence, a process that began with Confederation in 1867.

    Signals of support to Canada

    Royal Visits are one of the monarchy’s most effective tools for promoting international relations. In Charles’s recent visit to Italy, he even made a point of honouring Canada.

    This upcoming visit is expected to highlight Canada’s identity separate from the United States. It will give Charles the opportunity to remind everyone of the Crown’s place at the heart of Canadian sovereignty and our constitutional relationship with monarchy. This is an image that Charles has been eager to foster since becoming King in 2022 following the death of his mother and amid waning enthusiasm for the monarchy in some Commonwealth countries.

    The King cannot make political statements — at least, not without the say-so of the prime minister. After meeting with Justin Trudeau in March before he was replaced by Carney as prime minister, Charles signalled his support for Canadian sovereignty through a series of subtle but important gestures.

    He presented a ceremonial sword to the Usher of the Black Rod — one of the Canadian Senate’s senior ceremonial officers. A week later, Charles planted a red maple at Buckingham Palace to commemorate the late Queen Elizabeth’s support for international forestry. He even wore Canadian military insignia on his admiral’s uniform during a public inspection of a British aircraft carrier.

    Commonwealth ties

    The King’s visit could also reinvigorate Canada’s ties to the Commonwealth.

    Canada has long maintained positive relations with the other Commonwealth countries through shared culture, military action and economic support. This Royal Visit could solidify the beneficial role of the Crown and of the Commonwealth for Canada as it seeks to assert its sovereignty and broaden its international economic ties in the face of American tariffs.

    Many in Canada and around the world will be watching and listening to the King’s speech when he opens Parliament on May 27.

    It is unlikely there will be any direct references to Trump’s 51st state threats or to the president himself. But its symbolic significance could reaffirm Canada’s place on the world stage. It may also help to quell, at least for a little while, the growing calls to reconsider the need for the British monarchy at all in modern-day Canada.

    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced the agency’s intent to expand unannounced inspections at foreign manufacturing facilities that produce foods, medicines and other medical products intended for American consumers and patients. In response to this announcement, U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) released the following statement:

    “Through my oversight work in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, I outlined serious inadequacies with the FDA’s foreign drug inspection program. American patients and consumers deserve access to products that are safe and reliable. They should always be protected from products that are dangerous and harmful. As President Trump works to secure domestic manufacturing of products like pharmaceutical drugs, I welcome Commissioner Makary’s pledge to further evaluate the foreign drug inspection program and improve the quality and safety of products for American consumers.”

    BACKGROUND

    On May 6, the FDA issued a press release describing its intent to expand the use of these unannounced inspections.

    Rep. Griffith introduced a bill that was signed into law in 2022, H.R. 7006 – the INSPECTIONS Act, that requires the FDA to consider the compliance history of establishments in the country or region in which the establishment is located as a factor in their risk-based inspections schedule.

    In the 118th Congress, Rep. Griffith chaired the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations.

    CAMP GUERNSEY, Wyo. – Wyoming Army National Guard aviators, in coordination with local and state firefighting agencies, conducted annual interagency bucket drop training April 16 at Camp Guernsey Joint Training Center, enhancing readiness for wildfire response across the state.

    The training brought together Wyoming Aviation crews and partners including Wyoming State Forestry, Camp Guernsey Fire Department, Cheyenne Fire Rescue’s Wildland Team, Glendo Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Albany County Volunteer Fire Department, Yoder Volunteer Fire Department, Guernsey Rural Fire District, and the Platte County Fire Warden. The exercise was designed to sharpen skills like water bucket deployment, aerial coordination, and ground-to-air communications.

    “This training supports both our federal and state missions,” said Maj. Brian Doble, operations officer for Training Center Command. “At the federal level, Camp Guernsey’s mission is to facilitate realistic military training. That training comes with an inherent wildfire risk. Our aviators often stand ready to respond, and this type of exercise—conducted with our interagency partners—builds confidence that we can effectively mitigate that risk.”

    According to Doble, the training also serves to prepare aviators for real-world wildfire suppression across Wyoming by ensuring they meet required state and federal certifications. Local firefighters benefit as well, gaining experience working with aircraft in wildfire scenarios.

    “This isn’t just about dropping water,” Doble said. “It’s about building relationships and practicing coordinated responses. You never want to meet your firefighting partners for the first time during an actual emergency. These joint exercises build trust and save time when it counts most.”

    Camp Guernsey’s unique terrain and mission make it an ideal location for such joint operations.

    “Conducting this kind of training at Camp Guernsey is mutually beneficial,” Doble explained. “We conduct planned burns to maintain a fire-adapted landscape that supports military training while protecting the surrounding environment. Our partners get critical live-fire experience, and the community benefits from reduced wildfire risk.”

    Doble emphasized the importance of cooperation in the region’s emergency response framework.

    “There isn’t a single department around here that can do it all alone,” he said. “We depend on each other. Whether it’s a planned burn or a real wildfire, these partnerships are what keep people safe.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Wyoming Air National Guard selected for C-130J upgrade

    CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Department of the Air Force has announced that the Wyoming Air National Guard base in Cheyenne has been selected to receive the C-130J Super Hercules, a modern upgrade to replace its aging fleet of C-130H aircraft.

    The decision marks a major milestone for the 153rd Airlift Wing and reflects the outstanding performance and reliability of Wyoming Airmen in support of missions at home and around the world. A total of eight C-130J aircraft will be assigned to Cheyenne, with the first deliveries expected to begin in early 2028.

    “This is a major win for the men and women of the Wyoming Air National Guard,” said Maj. Gen. Greg Porter, Wyoming’s Adjutant General. “It’s a result of their hard work, the trust they’ve built across the Air Force, and the strong support we’ve received from our state and national leaders. We are grateful.”

    As part of the transition, pilots and loadmasters will undergo new training and certification, while flight engineers and navigators will be phased out of C-130J crew configurations. The changes will affect 19 manpower positions, which will be reallocated through the Air National Guard’s corporate process.

    Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon emphasized the long-term value of the investment.

    “This decision speaks volumes about the professionalism and dedication of our Cowboy Guard,” said Governor Mark Gordon. “I’m proud of the work that’s gone into making this possible and thankful to the Air Force for recognizing Wyoming as a critical part of its future.     Senate Resolution Calls on Trump Administration to Reverse Course on Richardson Waiver, Mirroring 1980s Effort to Boost Transparency
    WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, last week joined Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Angus King (I-Maine) and 15 Senators in introducing a bicameral resolution calling on the Trump Administration to reverse course on a decision to stop seeking public input on many major changes to programs and policies overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Trump Administration’s actions break with decades of precedent that have allowed the public and health care organizations to make their voices heard. 
    “Donald Trump and Robert Kennedy Jr. are taking a wrecking ball to our health care system. Their cruel actions will destroy HHS’ capacity to deliver services that are essential to the well-being of the American people—including tearing down the long-standing tradition of giving patients a voice in decisions about their health care. If the goal is to have more efficiency, better service, and better outcomes for patients, this is a backwards way to do it,” said Senator Welch. “The Trump Administration must immediately retract this disastrous policy and prioritize people’s lives over power grabs.”

    In early March, HHS reversed its long-standing practice of taking public comments on everything from proposed rules, grants, loans, and contracts to the structure of the agency itself. This came into full view when Secretary Kennedy announced a mass wave of firings and closures of dozens of offices across the agency that work on matters related to supporting seniors, cancer and infectious disease research and more. 
    The resolution would express the sense of the Senate that the Trump Administration should withdraw the change in policy that would significantly reduce public notice and comment, limit public engagement on new regulations at HHS, and allow HHS to take actions that will have immediate impacts on the health care system and the people it serves without soliciting public input. The text of the resolution mirrors a bipartisan resolution that was introduced in the House in 1982, which led HHS under the Reagan Administration to reverse course on a similar action to limit public input on rulemaking at the agency.

    Tampa, Florida – Senior U.S. District Judge Richard Lazzara has sentenced Pedro Antunez-Galarza (43, Mexico) to 46 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after deportation for an aggravated felony, possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, and possessing a false Permanent Resident card and Social Security card. The court also ordered Antunez-Galarza to forfeit the Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Shield, and ammunition used in the offense.

    On the same day as his sentencing hearing, Antunez-Galarza admitted that he had committed new law violations and Senior U.S. District Judge Charlene Honeywell sentenced him to 10 months in federal prison to run consecutive with the sentence that Judge Lazzara had imposed.

    According to court documents, Antunez-Galarza was deported in 2020 after he was convicted of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense.  Antunez-Galarza was deported again in 2021 and 2022. In the early morning hours of July 19, 2024, deputies from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Antunez-Galarza, who was riding a bicycle without any lights on. Antunez-Galarza fled from the deputies. When a deputy caught up to him, Antunez-Galarza reached for his waistband before the deputy arrested him. The deputy searched Antunez-Galarza and found a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Shield that had been reported stolen, a Social Security card with invalid numbers for a “Tony Garcia,” and a fictitious Permanent Resident card with the name “Tony Garcia” that displayed a photograph of Antunez-Galarza. 

    Deputies booked and fingerprinted Antunez-Galarza at the Manatee County Jail. A biometric records check showed that Antunez-Galarza’s fingerprints matched those from his prior deportations. Immigration officers reviewed their files and determined that Antunez-Galarza had not received permission to reenter the United States. On October 18, 2024, Antunez-Galarza was arrested. At that time, Antunez-Galarza confessed to paying a smuggler to bring him back into the United States and illegally possessing the firearm.

    This case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Adam W. McCall.

    This was the message from Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille at the opening of the Middle East Africa (MEA) Future Leaders Challenge South Africa, held this week in Johannesburg.

    “Tourism plays a significant role in our economy and has the potential to create many more jobs,” de Lille told attendees, which comprised tourism entrepreneurs, students, and industry experts. 

    “But to truly unlock that potential, we need a skilled, adaptable workforce, especially among our youth,” the Minister said.

    De Lille believes a big part of the solution to youth unemployment lies in bridging the skills gap through targeted education and innovation.

    “We must develop and harness critical skills like digital literacy, AI-driven customer service, digital marketing, data analytics, and sustainability. These are no longer optional; they are essential,” she said.

    The event, which brought together rising stars from 18 tourism and hospitality schools, is part of the G20 Tourism Hackathon, aimed at finding creative, tech-forward solutions for the tourism industry. According to De Lille, initiatives like these are vital to preparing the next generation of tourism leaders.

    “We must empower our youth not just with skills, but with mentorship and real leadership opportunities. Let’s transform our young people into the job creators of tomorrow.”

    The Department of Tourism is currently reviewing training and development strategies in line with the National Tourism Sector Strategy and other national growth frameworks. A key focus is ensuring that education aligns with industry needs, particularly in a post-pandemic world where digital nomadism and remote work are reshaping global travel trends.

    “South Africa must learn from countries like the UAE, Brazil, Ethiopia, and India, who are embracing Digital Nomad Tourism. We need reliable infrastructure—think seamless mobility, fast internet, and remote work hubs. These are deal-breakers for modern travellers,” De Lille explained.

    She emphasized that this transformation cannot happen in isolation.

    “Public-private partnerships are vital. We need businesses, universities, and government to collaborate, invest in skills training, and create jobs. This isn’t just about tourism; it’s about our future.”
