  • MIL-OSI Europe: Written question – Strategies to attract international professionals from third countries to the EU – E-002642/2025

    Source: European Parliament

    Question for written answer  E-002642/2025
    to the Commission
    Rule 144
    Joachim Streit (Renew)

In an increasingly globalised labour market, the EU is competing with other economies, in particular the US, for highly skilled international talent. While the US Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme allows international graduates to work in the country for up to three years without prior job offers, there is no comparable flexible model in the EU. The extensions of the OPT in 2008 and 2016 resulted in a 400 % increase in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) participants – a clear indication of its effectiveness in tying highly qualified third-country nationals to the US labour market[1].

While Germany allows third-country nationals with a German degree to stay for up to 18 months to seek employment, this approach is limited to that country and not harmonised across the EU. At the same time, it is clear that many international students prefer to go to the US, including as a result of restrictive EU visa policies and a lack of awareness of career prospects. Given the acute shortage of skilled workers in areas such as health, AI and STEM, there is an urgent need for an overall EU strategy to actively attract international talent from third countries.

    • 1.Is the Commission planning to develop an EU model of employment-related follow-up support, akin to the OPT model, allowing third-country nationals with an EU university degree to transition temporarily into the EU labour market?
    • 2.What funding instruments are there currently at EU level for international talent outside the higher education sector, in particular with regard to professional integration or qualified employment?

  • MIL-OSI: DIMO and Ownli Partner to Bring Data Ownership and Insurance Savings to Connected Drivers

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

NEW YORK, July 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — DIMO, the leading connected vehicle platform, today announced a partnership with Ownli, the platform that helps people collect, certify, and earn from their vehicle and driving data. Together, DIMO and Ownli are revolutionizing the way drivers shop for insurance by transparently making their vehicle data and custom insurance profile work for them.

Under this unique partnership, DIMO users can create an Ownli Insurance Profile with their vehicle data. The profile functions like a digital passport for insurance shopping, eliminating the need for drivers to have to manually re-enter data multiple times or chase down obscure requests.

Today, insurers and agents rely heavily on middleman data providers to acquire new customers and source vehicle data without car owners ever having the opportunity to profit from their own data. For context, the insurance advertising market in 2025 is expected to reach $14.12 billion, fueled in large part by a need for insurers to bring in new customers primarily with the help of data providers and lead generators.

Ownli’s solution cuts out the middleman and enables individuals to create a verified insurance profile that works for them, allowing insurers and brokers to directly provide a quote or insurance policy registration based on the data provided. Better yet, drivers can decide whether or not to share that profile and can be rewarded directly for doing so. With explicit permission, DIMO users can share their insurance profile and Ownli will connect them with the best broker to deliver personalized quotes from top insurers including Progressive, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, and more.

“Our mission is to help people see their data for what it is: an asset that should be made to work for them,” said Elan Nyer, CEO at Ownli. “This partnership allows DIMO users to save time, save money, and get paid for the data they already own.”

“We are excited to bring drivers ways to save time and money. DIMO Mobile is the best way to find opportunities like Ownli, which helps you save time when looking for insurance, while getting you paid for the data you provide” said Alex Rawitz, Co-Founder of DIMO. “Our partnership will help drivers be better, more responsible car owners, and as always, they can be confident data is handled securely and privately .”

    About DIMO
DIMO is transforming vehicle ownership by putting drivers in control of their data. Its privacy-first, AI-integrated platform connects drivers, automakers, and developers to accelerate connected vehicle innovation while ensuring drivers retain full ownership of their information. Through the DIMO Mobile app, drivers gain real-time insights to improve vehicle performance, maximize savings on maintenance, and access a growing suite of marketplace applications while earning rewards in DIMO tokens. It was founded in 2021 by automotive and fintech veterans from ConsenSys, Vroom, GM, Volkswagen, Aeris, and Chainalysis. Please visit us on X and LinkedIn.

    About Ownli
Ownli is a personal data platform that enables people to capture, control, and earn from their information while giving businesses reliable and verified insights. Ownli works primarily with property and casualty insurers, helping them cut premium leakage and increase customer retention. Insurers can purchase verified data directly from policyholders and prospects, including accurate vehicle mileage, vehicle condition, garaging location, and more. This seamless exchange turns traditional points of friction into meaningful engagement opportunities for both insurers and customers.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Tech Policy – Workers absent from government’s AI “strategy” – CTU

Source: New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi

The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi is concerned that the artificial intelligence (AI) “strategy” document released today by the Government ignores impacts on working people and replicates the corporate hype of Microsoft and other tech giants.

“It is crucial that no workers are left behind as AI usage increases, and so it is deeply concerning that workers are absent from the document released by the Government today,” said NZCTU President Richard Wagstaff.

“AI technologies do provide opportunities for improving productivity and the quality of service. But this will only happen if workers are actively engaged on the implementation and governance of these technologies.

“Workers also need to be properly trained on how to use AI safely and productively, but the strategy released today fails to set out a coherent plan for achieving this.

“Some workers, particularly in clerical and administrative roles, are at a high risk of being displaced by AI. We need to deliver a just transition for any workers negatively affected by AI by supporting them to retrain and find good work.

“The strategy also skates over the very real risks that AI technologies pose for workers. This includes the severe health and safety risks associated with AI surveillance systems, productivity monitoring, and automated management.

“The “light touch” approach proposed by the Government will do nothing to protect New Zealand workers from the serious risks posed by AI,” said Wagstaff.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: ICC recommendations for inclusive AI that delivers for business and society

    Source: International Chamber of Commerce

Headline: ICC recommendations for inclusive AI that delivers for business and society

    Share this:

Inclusive AI is not just a matter of fairness – it is essential for unlocking the full potential of AI for business and society alike. Without broad access to digital infrastructure, data, skills and ethical frameworks, entire markets risk being left behind, limiting innovation and economic growth, and deepening the existing digital divide.

This not only holds back communities in the Global South but also narrows the opportunities for businesses to scale solutions, enter new markets and build globally relevant AI systems.

    Why does inclusive AI matter?

Inclusive AI ensures that artificial intelligence systems actively empower and benefit people, regardless of geography or language. It opens new possibilities to accelerate sustainable development, supports transformative outcomes across critical sectors including healthcare and education, and drives innovation and economic growth across economies. By prioritising inclusion, we can ensure the benefits of AI are shared widely and help close existing global gaps.

    What’s holding back inclusive AI?

Barriers such as limited digital infrastructure, lack of access to quality data and compute and significant skills gaps – especially in the Global South – are slowing inclusive AI progress. Many AI models are also not designed with diverse languages or local contexts in mind. These challenges persist despite widespread connectivity coverage. Fragmented regulatory environments, limited investment in local innovation and language barriers further widen the AI divide.

Without targeted support, these gaps will continue to exclude large parts of the world from AI-driven development.

ICC recommendations: what can business and governments do to achieve inclusive AI?

    1. Invest in foundational infrastructure such as clean energy, broadband connectivity, and sustainable data centres.
    2. Expand access to high-quality, interoperable public data.
    3. Ensure inclusive digital education and workforce training across all levels.
    4. Promote homegrown innovation, including linguistic inclusion and support for local AI ecosystems.
    5. Adopt national strategies that align with international ethical frameworks.
    6. Update regulatory systems, particularly around data governance, privacy, and cybersecurity.
    7. Integrate AI standards into public procurement.

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 8 (Xinhua) — Addressing the plenary sessions of the 17th BRICS summit on Sunday and Monday, Chinese Premier Li Qiang called for commitment to building an open world economy, opposed unilateralism and protectionism, and stressed the need to maintain stability and smooth operation of industrial and supply chains.

At the plenary sessions, the Chinese premier also touched upon topics such as strengthening multilateralism, artificial intelligence, environmental protection and climate change, and global health. The sessions were attended by leaders of BRICS countries, partner countries, guest countries, and representatives of international organizations.

Li Qiang noted that the current international economic and trade order and the multilateral trading system are facing serious challenges, and global economic recovery remains a difficult task. In expanding cooperation, BRICS should remain true to the founding purpose of the organization, meet the demands of the times, uphold and practice multilateralism, promote a fair and open international economic and trade order, join forces in the Global South, and make greater contributions to global stability and development, he said.

According to the Prime Minister, when expanding cooperation, BRICS must support the basic principles of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and promote liberalization and simplification of trade and investment procedures.

Mentioning the establishment of the China Cooperation Center for the Development of Special Economic Zones in the BRICS countries this year, Li Qiang expressed China’s readiness to work with all parties to build a network of practical cooperation.

He called on all parties to remain committed to strengthening international financial cooperation, expressing support for the expansion and strengthening of the New Development Bank and welcoming the willingness of countries in the Global South to invest in China’s financial market.

He called for an accelerated review of the World Bank’s equity stakes and the adjustment of quota shares by the International Monetary Fund, and stressed the need to enhance the representation and voice of developing countries.

Li Qiang noted that greater cooperation within BRICS should open up a “new blue ocean” of economic growth, calling for cooperation in new areas such as the digital and green economy, to make artificial intelligence (AI) the driving force of all industries and benefit every household, and to help strengthen the capacity of countries in the Global South.

China will launch the Global South Digital Development Initiative under the Global Development Initiative and plans to provide 200 training programs on digital economy and AI to Global South countries over the next five years, he said.

He added that China welcomes the participation of all countries in the World Conference on Artificial Intelligence to be held later in July.

Highlighting the growing risks in the areas of climate, environment and health, Li Qiang said the international community should form a broad consensus, take active actions and join efforts to address common challenges.

He called on the international community to strengthen global synergy in combating climate change, resolutely implement the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, adhere to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, and deepen cooperation in clean energy, carbon markets and other areas.

Developed countries must fulfill their commitments to climate change financing, technology transfer and other areas, Li Qiang stressed.

According to him, the world must achieve more tangible results in the field of environmental protection, adhere to the principle of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature, advocate for a systems approach to management and more effectively implement the Convention on Biological Diversity and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

He also called for increased capacity building for public health systems, calling on the international community to support the World Health Organization’s coordinating role in global health governance, make full use of platforms such as the BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Centre, and provide more public goods to countries in the Global South.

China always fulfills its obligations and makes active contributions to global challenges within its capabilities, Li said, adding that China will continue to take concrete actions, fulfill its responsibilities and cooperate with all parties to promote greener, healthier and more sustainable global development.

The summit resulted in the adoption of the BRICS Leaders’ Statement on Global Governance in Artificial Intelligence and the BRICS Leaders’ Framework Declaration on Climate Finance. –0–

Taxpayers urged to use digital platforms to communicate with SARS

As the filing season for individuals is underway, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Commissioner, Edward Kieswetter, has encouraged taxpayers to use SARS’s digital channels to engage with the organisation.

“Taxpayers do not have to expose themselves to the elements in this cold weather and stand in queues. They can conduct their tax affairs in the comfort of their homes rather than pay taxi fares,” Kieswetter said on Monday.

The Commissioner made these comments during his visit to the SARS’s Alberton Taxpayer Service Centre, where he reviewed the state of readiness as Auto Assessment begins, running from 7 to 20 July 2025.

During his visit, he was accompanied by Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, who expressed his satisfaction at SARS’s state of readiness to deliver a successful and easy Filing Season for taxpayers.

The Minister and the Commissioner interacted with taxpayers, most of whom had visited the offices to update and verify their registered details, including changing emails, banking information, and cellphone numbers.

Some of the taxpayers had visited the branch to settle matters related to their outstanding tax debt and returns.

SARS stressed that there is no need to visit a SARS branch but if taxpayers must, they should first book an appointment to avoid long queues.

SARS has started to issue Auto Assessments to taxpayers whose tax affairs are less complicated. If taxpayers agree with their Auto Assessment, no further action is required from them.

“Acceptance is automatic, so taxpayers need not manually accept the Auto Assessment. Taxpayers are advised to wait for the SMS/email notice before logging in to eFiling or the SARS MobiApp.

“Refunds less than R100 due to taxpayers will automatically be paid into their bank accounts within 72 hours once the assessment is completed,” SARS said.

Filing Season 2025 opened for non-provisional and some provisional taxpayers who were not auto-assessed.

The filing period for non-provisional taxpayers is from 21 July to 20 October 2025. Provisional taxpayers’ filing window will close on 19 January 2026.

The following dates should be diarised for this year’s Filing Season:
    •    Issuing of Auto Assessment notices: 7 – 20 July 2025.
    •    Individual taxpayers (non-provisional): 21 July – 20 October 2025.
    •    Provisional taxpayers: 21 July 2025 – 19 January 2026.

“Taxpayers are urged to be extremely careful and keep their details confidential. In the run-up to Filing Season, there will be many attempts from scammers to defraud taxpayers.

“Scammers can present themselves as SARS officials to steal taxpayers’ personal details, make them click on links, or pay money into an account. SARS will never ask taxpayers to use any link. Taxpayers must protect their eFiling login details and use only registered tax practitioners,” SARS said.

Information on the latest scams can be found on the SARS website: www.sars.gov.za.

To report or request information on phishing, taxpayers can send an email to phishing@sars.gov.za. To avoid penalties, taxpayers must submit accurate information promptly.

For a smooth and easy Filing Season 2025, taxpayers are urged to use the following communication channels with SARS:
    •    SARS Website: visit www.sars.gov.za and click on the “Individuals” tab.
    •    SARS Online Query System (SOQS): https://tools.sars.gov.za/soqs.
    •    SARS WhatsApp: send “Hi” or “Hello” to 0800 117 277.
    •    AI Virtual Assistant: available 24/7 on the SARS website to answer queries.

BEIJING, July 8 — The UN peacekeeping explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) international training program, jointly organized by the Peacekeeping Affairs Center of China’s Ministry of National Defense and the Chinese PLA Army Engineering University, officially began on Monday in Xuzhou City, east China’s Jiangsu Province. Nearly 20 engineering officers from the armies and air forces of eight countries are participating in the 12-day training program. Instructors of the training include experts from the UN Department of Peace Operations and Chinese specialists. It is the first time that China has organized an international training program specifically for peacekeeping EOD commanders.

This training fulfills a commitment made by China at the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 held in May this year. It is also a concrete step by the Chinese military to implement the Global Security Initiative (GSI), promote international military exchanges in the field of explosive ordnance search and disposal, effectively respond to post-conflict explosive threats, and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

The training is conducted at the training base of the Chinese PLA Army Engineering University. Featuring the application of advanced technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI) in explosive ordnance search and disposal, the training includes theoretical courses on the detection of typical landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and operational standards and case studies related to explosive ordnance search and disposal in peacekeeping mission areas, as well as practical courses on operating multi-functional unmanned mine-clearing vehicles and AI-assisted IED dismantling.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Government and business put forward “Team UK” approach to unleash defence sector’s potential

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments 3

    Press release

Government and business put forward “Team UK” approach to unleash defence sector’s potential

Plans to deliver jobs across the UK by unlocking the full economic potential of Britain’s defence sector are set to be unveiled today (8 July 2025).

    • Recommendations unveiled today by the Defence and Economic Growth Taskforce will build upon 14,000 extra jobs supported by government investment in the defence sector

    • Comes as Defence Tech company Helsing announces the UK’s first Resilience Factory in Plymouth as it accelerates £350m UK investment in Artificial Intelligence

    • Taskforce report puts forward “Team UK” government and business collaboration to drive growth and create jobs as part of government’s Plan for Change

Recommendations from the Defence and Economic Growth Taskforce will outline key steps – including developing regional Defence Growth Deals – to ensure that working people benefit from the government’s move to increase defence spending.

New opportunities for UK workers are already on the way with defence tech company Helsing announcing that it will open the UK’s first Resilience Factory this year. The UK technology and its supply chain will create specialist high-value jobs in the South West and across the country, as Helsing doubles the size of its UK business.

Helsing’s acceleration of its £350m Trinity House private investment will see it provide allied navies with AI-powered miniature submarines to protect critical underwater infrastructure. The advanced manufacturing facility will be based in Plymouth, as the new national centre of marine autonomy.

The Taskforce’s recommendations will be launched at a Ministry of Defence roundtable chaired by the Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Defence Secretary John Healey later today.

The report’s key recommendation is for a “Team UK” strategy to ensure the UK is globally competitive, driving innovation, jobs and prosperity across the UK, reforming procurement and contracting processes to grow the UK defence sector – in line with the Strategic Defence Review.

It also recommends prioritising investment in “dual use” technologies that can be used for both civil and military purposes in the UK.

The meeting comes as figures published last week show that 151,000 UK jobs are directly supported by the MOD’s spend with industry – an increase of 14,000 on the previous year.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, said:

“A new era of threats demands a new era for defence and security. That’s why we took the decision to prioritise defence spending, increasing it to 2.6% of GDP by April 2027.

“Through this, and the work of the Defence and Economic Growth Taskforce – including Helsing’s welcome announcement of the first UK Resilience Factory – we are securing our nation and unleashing the economic potential in the Defence sector, benefitting working people across the UK through our Plan for Change.”

Ned Baker, UK Managing Director, Helsing:

“Helsing supports the Government’s ambitions for our defences and economy. We are investing in both by opening the first UK Resilience Factory and accelerating our £350m commitment.

“We have confidence in the Government’s commitment to new technological solutions for defence. Together, we can attract further private investment, equipping our Armed Forces and growing the economy.”

The Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey, said:

“In a new era for defence, we are building a new partnership with the UK’s outstanding defence industry, with innovators and with investors.

“We will equip our Armed Forces for the future and make defence an engine for economic growth through our Defence Industrial Strategy – unlocking investment, reforming procurement, championing innovation and backing companies of all sizes.
“I welcome the Defence and Economic Growth Taskforce’s report which recognises how we can boost high-skilled jobs across the country and grow our economy while strengthening our frontline forces.”

The government has already begun work on three of the report’s recommendations:

    • Establishing a defence SME Hub to provide support to new market entrants.

    • Commencing work on a Defence Exports Office in the MOD, as announced in the Strategic Defence Review.

    • Committing to developing Defence Growth Deals across the UK at the Spending Review.

The remaining recommendations will now be worked through as part of the cross-Whitehall Defence Growth Board and the Defence Industrial Joint Council ahead of the forthcoming launch of the Defence Industrial Strategy.

The Taskforce, led by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) with Oliver Wyman and co-chaired by the Chancellor and Defence Secretary, is a unique partnership between government, industry and financial institutions. Its 20 member organisations have collaborated with HM Treasury and the MOD to produce the recommendations.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: NSU Startup Studio Presented Its Projects for the First Time in the Form of the Artificial Intelligence Alley

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

    Source: Novosibirsk State University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The Alley of Friendship of Artificial and Natural Intelligence was a horizontal space designed as a real alley: it had trees and a waterfall, and an interactive exhibition was inscribed into such a landscape. The alley symbolized a walk of an ordinary person through the world of artificial intelligence and modern technologies that are available on the market and that can be tried right here and now. In total, over 1,000 people walked through the alley during the day of work – from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: each of the visitors got involved in the interactive activities presented at the stands. A separate bright component of the exhibition was the game “Startup Race”, which the NSU Startup Studio presented to a wide audience and tested in action.

The alley included the following technologies and developments:

    1. Emotion analyzer

At the reception for registering guests of Smart Picnic there was a special camera with an interactive screen. Anyone could come up, make a face, and the screen would display the emotion they were experiencing.

The guests were particularly impressed by this invention: everyone had fun and amusement checking how well their faces were able to express emotions. The technology also has medical applications for diagnosing diseases associated with incorrect display of emotions on the face.

    2. Virtual assistant

After the first stop, guests were met by a virtual animator from the NSU Startup Studio, who announced all the technologies created using artificial intelligence.

    3. Emulator of human personality in voice

NSU students who received a grant created a voice simulator that imitated the personality of famous people. Visitors to the alley interacted with the simulator through their voice, trying to sell it a pen or ask a question, like in the movie “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

    4. Smile analyzer

The next stand was a smile analyzer, developed jointly with a doctor from the Rostov Medical University. The device, using a patented method, gave recommendations on the health of teeth and the oral cavity based on a smile analysis.

    5. Game “Academ Dreams”

This stand offered to immerse oneself in the world of Akademgorodok in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Players could become virtual residents of the science town and interact with its inhabitants, creating a copy of themselves in the virtual space.

    6. Swaid Monitor

It was a photoplethysmograph that recorded heart rate readings and constructed a stress index using the Baevsky method. Together with the staff of the Psychology department of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies of NSU, the game “Calm Down” was developed, in which participants put on a bracelet and, while meditating, watched the stress line decrease on the screen. The monitor helped participants achieve a meditative state even in a crowd.

    7. Map of emotions

Each of the visitors to the alley and the Picnic sites in general could mark themselves on the map and indicate what emotion they are currently experiencing in real time. The development is also intended for deep behavioral research: for example, what emotion and how intensely a particular group of people in a particular location experiences.

    8. Games with artificial intelligence

Several separate stands presented interactive games in which visitors fought against AI – “Crocodile” and “Riddles”. Separately, an interactive demo board was presented with photographs of how people interact with inventions at the exhibition.

    9. Game “Startup Race”

The development was first presented at the alley and was tested in real time.

Of course, not all projects of the NSU Startup Studio were presented at the Alley, since among its participants there are more than 30 residents with their own ideas and projects.

    — The Artificial Intelligence Exhibition became a kind of “frontier” for us, which could be organized at the Smart Picnic site. On the one hand, the alley became our product and even an element of the interactive show, and, on the other hand, it was also a challenge for our residents and partners — they had to show their technology to people in extreme conditions and, despite everything, think through to the smallest detail how to present a demo version of the product, what to say in the opening speech, at what points it is worth speeding up production in order to show a finished product, and not just developments and an idea. That is, the Artificial Intelligence Alley became a powerful incentive for our residents to work, — said Evgeny Ivanov, a representative of the NSU Startup Studio and managing partner of the Coion investment syndicate.

According to Evgeniy, some startups actually showed high growth rates thanks to their participation in the Alley.

    — One of the projects, Lexis Voice, the very same stand with a voice imitator and the question “Sell a pen”, showed a good result. The team accelerated in all directions, from development to sales market. Thus, in a month and a half, the project’s revenue increased 5 times, because there was a strict deadline – participation in the exhibition, and a clear understanding of what should be ready by this time, — summed up Evgeny Ivanov.

The next step in popularizing innovative entrepreneurship after the Artificial Intelligence Alley is the Startup Unit school, which started in July, where anyone can feel like a budding entrepreneur. After the school, in the fall, all students will be able to start the NSU acceleration program .catalyst, and residents of the NSU startup studio will also be able to take part in the Siberian Venture Fair, where they will present projects in the format of idea boards. The goal of all these projects is one – to bring to life the ideas and developments of students.

    — The fair is really one of the elements of the chain, which the Startup Studio is developing with its residents. Ultimately, all this is so that innovators launch some product, a viable business, and then return to the state the resources that are invested in them in the form of various subsidies, grant support that they can attract. Our task is for our residents to “spend” these funds correctly and as a result, a finished product is obtained that is needed by someone and will be sold, — emphasized Alexey Starostin, Director of the NSU Startup Studio.

  • MIL-OSI: Zscaler Extends Zero Trust Platform to Enable Cellular Communications for IoT/OT with simply a SIM card – No VPN or software

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Zscaler, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZS), the leader in cloud security, today extends the AI-powered Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange™ platform with the launch of Zscaler Cellular. This easy to install innovation enables Zero Trust communication for IoT and OT devices using only a cellular SIM card—eliminating the need for additional software or ineffective VPN connections. Zscaler Cellular delivers resilient connectivity by ensuring IoT/OT devices automatically connect to any cellular network globally, while providing zero attack surface by isolating each device on its own private island, with all connections securely routed through the Zscaler platform.

“Zscaler pioneered Zero Trust architecture; first with the introduction of Zero Trust for Users, then with Zero Trust for Cloud, followed by Zero Trust for Branch,” said Nathan Howe, Group VP of Emerging Technologies at Zscaler. “With the introduction of Zscaler Cellular, we have extended the power of the Zero Trust Exchange to IoT and OT devices with an easy ‘install and go’ SIM card that securely connects to any cellular network. This innovative solution provides customers with resilient connectivity, isolates each device to remove the attack surface, and ensures all inbound and outbound connections are protected through the Zero Trust Exchange.”

As enterprises rapidly deploy IoT/OT devices across diverse environments, traditional firewall and VPN-based security models fail to meet the demands of today’s mobile and distributed organizations, leaving devices exposed to cyber threats. Legacy approaches rely on costly infrastructure that cannot scale and cellular networks by themselves aren’t designed to enforce Zero Trust principals resulting in security blind spots and expanding attack surfaces.

“Zscaler Cellular solved our long-standing challenge: how to effectively secure the IoT and mobile devices that we deploy at clients’ and customers’ properties,” said Brian Shelby, Director of IT Infrastructure and Cybersecurity at Maverick Transportation. “We need to operate these tablets, time-tracking devices, and more on sites where we have no control over the networking options provided or the operating environment, and without adding software agents or using remote access VPNs. The solution allowed us to create device-bound authentication through Zscaler. This became our test case, and after equipping kiosks with Zscaler Cellular, our Zero Trust policies are enforced through the Zscaler Cellular Edge. The lines are gone, the employee experience is better, our business is still protected, and we don’t need a software agent or VPN on the device.”

Partnering with Telcos to Build a Foundation for Zero Trust Security at Scale

Zscaler partners with leading telecommunications companies to bring advanced Zero Trust security to cellular-connected devices. By leveraging the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange platform with telecom infrastructure, Zscaler Cellular delivers secure, scalable, and seamless connectivity for IoT and OT devices. Through solutions like Zscaler Cellular and Zscaler Cellular Edge, and collaborations with providers such as Stacuity and BT, enterprises gain managed security services that address the unique challenges of securing distributed, cellular-connected environments. These partnerships ensure organizations can extend Zero Trust principles across global cellular networks, reducing risks and enabling secure digital transformation at scale.

“Zscaler Cellular represents a significant advancement in IoT and mobile security,” said Zeus Kerravala, founder and principal analyst, ZK Research. “By leveraging Zero Trust with cellular networks, Zscaler helps eliminate longstanding visibility and control gaps that have plagued enterprises for years. It’s the first solution I’ve seen that brings cloud-scale security to every connected device—with the simplicity of activating a SIM.”

    Availability

Zscaler Cellular is available globally in August 2025. The solution is already in use by leading organizations including Sandvik and Maverick Transportation, with additional customers to be announced.

  • MIL-OSI: Voice Messaging App ‘buz’ Debuts ‘Kansai Vibes’ Japanese Voice Filter and Social Sharing

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SINGAPORE, July 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — buz, the voice messaging app that recently topped app store rankings across multiple countries, has released a product update today, with a spotlight on Japanese users. The update introduces the Kansai Vibes voice filter—buz’s most technically advanced filter to date—along with a suite of new features designed to enable more user creativity and social sharing.

Kansai Vibes: Innovation in Voice Filters

The Kansai Vibes voice filter brings vibrant regional Japanese dialects—like those from Kansai, a south-central region of Japan known for its expressive speech and major cities like Osaka and Kyoto—to life using a completely new speech synthesis approach.

Instead of simple voice conversion, buz now uses automatic speech recognition (ASR) to transcribe the user’s voice, a large language model (LLM) to rewrite it in the Kansai dialect, and finally text-to-speech (TTS) to generate a fresh, natural-sounding Kansai-accented voice. Each output is randomized, allowing for a variety of tones—from playful and anxious to bold or sarcastic—and featuring both male and female voices.

The Kansai Vibes launch is part of buz’s broader push to localize content for a culturally diverse audience. By capturing the nuance and personality of one of Japan’s regional dialects, buz is deepening its appeal among Japanese users and other international users who are interested in Japanese culture.

New ‘Featured’ Tab and Social Video Sharing

The app’s new update also debuts a Featured tab, where filters come to life with dynamic previews and social-ready content designed to spark creativity and encourage sharing. Users can now export voice-based creations directly to video, complete with visual effects and captions, then easily and quickly post them across social platforms.

New creative tools introduced in this release include fresh bubble styles, updated text templates, voice-to-video generation, and support for third-party video sharing—making it easier than ever to make voice moments into compelling, shareable content.

    Global Momentum and User Excitement

buz continues its organic growth, gaining strong traction across many markets as users embrace its fresh take on voice-driven social interaction. The app is also showing strong signs of popularity among young users in Japan and around the world, reflecting its broad cross-cultural appeal. In Japan, buz has ranked #5 in the Apple App Store’s Social Networking category and #7 in Google Play’s.

Additionally, buz has reached the #1 spot in the Social Networking category of 12 countries on the App Store and four countries on Google Play. It has also ranked among the top 10 social networking apps in 133 countries on the App Store and 53 countries on Google Play, including the US, UK, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. This strong viral growth across different markets demonstrates strong growth and momentum in diverse cultural contexts. With 4.9 stars on the App Store and 4.8 stars on Google Play, buz maintains one of the highest user satisfaction ratings in its category.

Infinitesima’s Metron®3D has demonstrated excellent sub-nanometre 3D metrology with the required cost-of-ownership necessary for HVM implementation.”

The Metron®3D features Infinitesima’s proprietary Rapid Probe Microscope™ (RPM™) technology that provides AFM measurement capability at 10× to 100× typical AFM throughput. The system’s capabilities also include fully automated wafer, data, and probe handling, making it optimal for in-line volume production of semiconductor devices. The investment in this metrology solution highlights SK hynix’s commitment to maintaining technical leadership in the development and manufacture of computer memory.

“We are delighted to be working with SK hynix; their support and guidance has enabled rapid qualification of our Metron®3D system and deployment in HVM,” stated Peter Jenkins, Infinitesima President & CEO.

  • MIL-OSI: GHO Capital to acquire FotoFinder Systems

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

GHO Capital to acquire FotoFinder Systems

Acquisition aligns with GHO’s strategy of investing in high growth areas of the MedTech market to improve healthcare outcomes

    • FotoFinder Systems is the market leader and pioneer in dermoscopy and total body mapping, offering software/AI-enabled skin imaging devices for skin cancer detection and dermatology
    • The Company is well-positioned in a growing market driven by increasing skin cancer incidence, an ageing population, and growing awareness of preventative skin health
    • GHO is uniquely positioned to unlock FotoFinder’s next phase of growth through its transatlantic platform and operational expertise —supporting further global expansion and broader commercialisation into adjacent segments such as aesthetics

London, UK – 8 July 2025: GHO Capital Partners LLP (“GHO”), the European specialist investor in global healthcare, today announces that it has signed an agreement to acquire a majority holding in FotoFinder Systems (“FotoFinder” or the “Company”), the global market leader in analogue & digital dermatoscopes, total body photography systems and diagnostic software & AI for skin cancer detection and dermatology, expanding its portfolio of MedTech companies innovating in high growth therapeutic areas.

Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Bad Birnbach, Bavaria, FotoFinder is a pioneer in advanced skin imaging systems and AI-powered diagnostic software, serving clinicians across Europe, the US, and RoW via its direct sales channel and extensive distributor network. Following the acquisition of US-based DermLite in 2024 —the global leader in analogue dermatoscopes based in Aliso Viejo, California — the Company has built a unique platform spanning the full spectrum of skin imaging technologies, from handheld analogue and digital devices to software/AI solutions and fully automated total body mapping systems. FotoFinder’s strong R&D capabilities have driven decades of product innovation and market leadership, delivering best-in-class imaging quality, design, usability, and software/AI — including the first and only MDR-certified AI-assisted dermatoscope in the EU.

Ken Eichmann and Stuart Quin, Partners at GHO Capital, commented: “We are delighted to announce the acquisition of FotoFinder, a pioneer in advanced skin imaging and AI-enabled diagnostic software. GHO identified FotoFinder through its sub-sector origination efforts and has teamed up with Munich-based EMZ Partners in a bilateral transaction to accelerate growth. FotoFinder, headquartered in Bavaria and founded by Andreas Mayer and family, recently merged with DermLite, based in California and founded by John Bottjer, Nizar Mullani and Thorsten Trotzenberg, to create the global market leader in dermoscopy devices. We are excited to partner with Andreas, John and the combined FotoFinder/DermLite team, along with our partners at EMZ, to leverage our experience of scaling international healthcare platforms.”

Andreas Mayer, Chief Executive Officer of FotoFinder, said: “I am proud of the legacy that we have built since I founded FotoFinder together with my father over thirty years ago. Over the past three decades, we have grown into the global leader in skin-imaging solutions, which is a testament to the best-in-class quality of our offerings, our innovative AI-backed technology and our world-class R&D capabilities. GHO’s investment represents an inflexion point for the business, with its specialist healthcare industry expertise and unrivalled network, we believe GHO is the ideal partner to support the Company in unlocking this next phase of growth. We look forward to working closely with Jan and the rest of the team as we continue to develop our global expansion strategy.”

Klaus Maurer, Senior Partner at EMZ, said: “Since our investment in FotoFinder three years ago the Company has achieved continued growth, underpinned by its expanded presence in the US market through DermLite. After extensive discussions and close alignment between GHO, FotoFinder, and EMZ on the Company’s strategic direction, we believe we have laid out the best possible foundation for its future success. With its unrivalled transatlantic expertise and extensive global network, we believe now is the optimal time for GHO to lead the charge on unlocking the synergies between FotoFinder and DermLite and accelerating the growth trajectory of the overall business.”

Rising skin cancer incidence, an ageing population, and growing patient awareness for regular skin check-ups is driving the increased use of dermoscopy devices. With over 1.8 million new skin cancer cases diagnosed globally each year, there is a growing need for effective tools to support diagnosis and improve diagnostic workflows to support a critical shortage of dermatologists worldwide. FotoFinder’s cost-effective technology shortens diagnostic timelines, streamlines workflows, and supports better clinical decision-making—positioning the Company to meet growing global demand and improve outcomes in skin cancer detection and broader dermatological care.

With an existing global footprint and best-in-class product portfolio, FotoFinder is strongly positioned for continued growth across global markets. GHO’s unique capabilities in scaling healthcare businesses will allow the Company to further expand its international presence, build on existing synergies between FotoFinder and DermLite to create a fully integrated global platform, continue to deliver technology innovation and accelerate expansion into adjacent markets such as aesthetics, leveraging its existing commercial infrastructure and technology.

As part of the acquisition, GHO Operating Partner Jan De Witte will join FotoFinder’s Board of Directors as Chairman. Jan will work closely with FotoFinder’s management team to continue to deliver significant growth of the business, leveraging his experience and knowledge in the medical imaging space.

    Transaction details
The transaction is expected to close in the coming weeks, subject to standard regulatory approvals. FotoFinder is currently majority owned by EMZ Partners. Alongside GHO’s equity commitment, EMZ Partners and management will reinvest to hold a minority position.

    Advisors
GHO was advised by Hengeler Mueller and Choate Hall & Stewart LLP (Legal), Alvarez & Marsal (Financial & Tax), L.E.K. Consulting (Commercial), Deloitte (ESG) and Palo Alto Strategy Group (Technology).

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Mahama underscores strong Ghana-Germany partnership

    Source: APO

    .

President John Dramani Mahama has bid farewell to the outgoing German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull, during a meeting at the Credentials Hall within the Presidency. The courtesy visit marked the conclusion of Ambassador Krull’s four-year term of duty, which President Mahama described as highly productive.

President Mahama reiterated Ghana’s commitment to building on the strong foundation of bilateral relations between the two countries. He emphasised the potential for deepened cooperation, particularly in the critical areas of economic development and security.

The President specifically commended Germany for its consistent support towards enhancing Ghana’s security architecture, citing significant contributions to the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and capacity-building initiatives for security personnel.

Addressing the evolving security landscape in the sub-region, President Mahama highlighted the growing threat posed by extreme terrorism, especially prevalent in the Sahel. He expressed Ghana’s readiness to work closely with Germany on targeted capacity training programmes aimed at bolstering regional efforts to combat this menace.

Touching upon the complex issue of irregular migration, President Mahama outlined Ghana’s collaborative efforts with international partners, including the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the European Union (EU). He stressed the importance of creating sustainable local opportunities for young people to mitigate the risks associated with perilous journeys across the Sahara and the Mediterranean.

President Mahama conveyed Ghana’s deep appreciation for Ambassador Krul’s service. “We appreciate you. You’re a friend of Ghana. And you’re welcome to visit any time you miss Ghana. You’re welcome to visit. And I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.”

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Guinea: One year after the enforced disappearance of Front National de Défense de la Constitution (FNDC) activists, abductions increase in a ‘climate of terror’

    Source: APO

    .

Guinean authorities must urgently reveal the fate and whereabouts of National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (Front national de défense de la Constitution – FNDC) activists Oumar Sylla and Mamadou Billo Bah, who were forcibly disappeared a year ago, and ensure that those suspected to be responsible for the abductions and enforced disappearances in Guinea are brought to justice in fair trial and victims and family members of victims are provided with access to justice and effective remedies, said 25 Guinean and international human rights organizations.

“We call on the Guinean authorities to break their unbearable silence regarding the fate of the two FNDC activists. There is no indication that they have carried out investigations to find the two activists who have been missing for a year,” the human rights organizations said today.

Mamadou Billo Bah and Oumar Sylla, known as Foniké Menguè, were arrested on 9 July 2024 at the latter’s home in Conakry by armed men, before allegedly being taken by special forces to the Loos archipelago. They were interrogated and tortured, according to a third member of FNDC who was abducted with the two others and released the day after. The authorities have denied holding them and their fate remains unknown to this day.

The FNDC, a civil society movement calling for a return to civilian rule, was disbanded in 2022. Oumar Sylla, its national coordinator had called for demonstrations on 11 July 2024 against, among other things, repression of the media and the high cost of living.

Since the Prosecutor General’s announcement on 17 July 2024 of the opening of ‘thorough and complete’ investigations into several abductions, including those of Oumar Sylla and Mamadou Billo Bah, no information has been made public about their progress.

Multiplication of cases of abductions and disappearances

Journalist Habib Marouane Camara, managing director of Le Révélateur news website, was abducted in Lambanyi, a commune of Conakry, on 3 December 2024 by men in uniform, according to witnesses. On 6 December 2024, the Dixinn public prosecutor’s office declared that the ‘arrest was carried out without orders from the constituted authorities and outside the cases provided for by law’, announcing that an investigation was underway. To date, there has been no news of the journalist’s whereabouts.

“Since these announcements, no information has been made public by the authorities. We call on them to shed full light on the cases of abductions and disappearances in the country by conducting prompt, independent, and transparent investigations into these cases. We also call on the authorities to ratify without reservation the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance,” said the human rights organizations.

In addition to these cases, there have been abductions followed by acts of torture on individuals known for their critical views. On 19 February 2025, the national coordinator of the Forum of Social Forces of Guinea (Forum des forces sociales de Guinée), Abdoul Sacko, was abducted and found the same day, according to his lawyers ‘in a critical state, tortured and abandoned by his abductors in the bush’.

Lawyer Mohamed Traoré suffered the same fate in June 2025. The former President of the Guinean Bar Association has testified that he was ‘subjected to abuse’ after being abducted from his home on the night of 20 to 21 June by armed men. The Bar Association reported that he had been found ‘with his back covered in wounds’. On 23 June, the public prosecutor again announced the opening of an ‘in-depth investigation into the facts’.

    ‘A climate of terror’

Following the abduction of Abdoul Sacko, the Bar Association denounced ‘the climate of terror that is gradually taking hold and […] the total lack of reaction from the judicial authorities’.

Our organizations spoke to lawyers and political actors who say they have been threatened.

A leader of an opposition party has been in hiding for several months, after receiving threats by phone and after people in plain clothes went to his home in his absence, making threats. Another politician said that he frequently changed his residence and route after receiving threats.

A lawyer said: ‘Since I started defending certain people critical of the government, I have received at least four calls confirming that I am on the list of people whose abduction is planned’.

A human rights defender said he had been alerted after his statements denouncing the abduction of Mohamed Traoré: “I have received two calls from people I know in the judicial system urging me to leave my home because I would be next on the list according to their information. I take this very seriously, I make sure I’m never alone”.

“We call on the Guinean authorities to respect their international human rights obligations to respect, protect, promote and fulfil the human rights of everyone in the country, as they have undertaken to do before the United Nations Human Rights Council in April 2025 during the Universal Periodic Review, in particular the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and the rights of human rights defenders,” said the Guinean and international human rights organizations.
