  • US eyes ‘back to basics’ revamp of G20 when it assumes presidency next year

The United States aims to pare the Group of 20 major economies back to its financial roots next year when it takes over the rotating presidency from South Africa, sources familiar with the Trump administration’s plans said.

Washington has scaled back its participation this year, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent skipping a G20 finance chiefs’ meeting that started in Durban, South Africa, on Thursday, his second absence from an event this year.

Experts and administration sources say the absence of top U.S. officials reflects the Trump administration’s skepticism about multilateral institutions such as the G20, which the U.S. helped found in 1999.

U.S. President Donald Trump has upended the global economy with a wide-ranging trade war that has targeted many developing countries, including G20 members, while slashing foreign development funds to pursue an “America First” agenda.

Three U.S. sources familiar with the matter say Washington still plans to assume the G20 presidency at the end of the year, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States.

But it will focus on two “tracks” – the leaders’ summit and the financial track – eliminating other working groups and ministerial-level meetings, including those on energy, health, commerce and the environment, two of the sources said.

A more streamlined G20 process would be in line with Bessent’s call in April for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank to focus on their core missions of financial stability and development instead of climate finance and gender issues. The White House and Treasury had no immediate comment.

    SECOND-ROUND RESET

Josh Lipsky, chair of international economics at the Atlantic Council in Washington, said Bessent and other senior U.S. officials want to get “back to basics,” an approach being embraced by other G20 members.

The U.S. has already withdrawn from co-chairing a working group on sustainable finance with China and it remains unclear whether Trump will join this year’s leaders’ summit in South Africa.

Many members agreed the G20’s portfolio had grown too large, triggering a review, said two sources familiar with the issue.

In 2024, G20 host Brazil sought the group’s endorsement of a global minimum tax on the ultra wealthy, a step that the Biden administration rejected as an overreach.

“There seems to be consensus at the G20 that it has expanded a lot. G20 South Africa is conducting a review of the G20 process and will provide recommendations to streamline it. That is in line with what the U.S. is looking at,” one of the sources said.

Activists and developing countries say they will watch U.S. actions, but that paring back could help the G20 survive.

“Our hope is that development continues to be linked,” said Eric LeCompte, executive director of the non-profit Jubilee USA Network. “Financial stability, debt issues and economic issues cannot be separated from development and global growth.”

    CRISIS ORIGINS

The G20 was founded after the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998, before expanding to include state leaders during the global financial crisis in 2008. It has been tested by U.S.-China tensions, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and divergent views on the Middle East conflicts.

Brad Setser, a former U.S. official now at the Council on Foreign Relations, said the G20 still offered a platform for high-level bilateral meetings.

He said Trump could welcome to the U.S. next year foreign leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and even Russian President Vladimir Putin if the Ukraine war ended, without the fanfare of a bilateral summit or state visit.

Ben Harris, a former senior Treasury official now at the Brookings Institution, said Washington’s decision to pull back offered China and others a chance to show leadership, which might not serve U.S. interests.

“It obviously creates a vacuum, and that vacuum will be filled.”

  • India remains a compelling investment destination globally: Report

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

India remains a compelling investment destination worldwide owing to its stability, structural reforms, and a resilient consumer base, a leading global investment firm, KKR, has stressed.

KKR, in its ‘2025 Mid-Year Global Macro Outlook,’ said India’s growth prospects and favourable market conditions make it an attractive opportunity for investors. “From a macro perspective, India’s relative insulation from global trade friction remains intact, supported by its predominantly domestic, consumer-driven economy,” the report stated.

“We continue to see India as one of the most compelling strategic allocations within emerging markets today,” it added.

The report, published by KKR’s Global Macro & Asset Allocation team, emphasised India’s unique position as a scalable opportunity amid a shift from benign globalisation to great power competition.

KKR also sees significant potential in infrastructure and credit investments in India, as the private sector capitalises on these trends.

“As the global trade landscape recalibrates, India is well-positioned to increase its manufacturing share, particularly as oil prices soften and ‘China+1’ strategies become more entrenched. Cyclically, we are observing early signs of a rebound following a soft patch in 2024, driven by rural income recovery, robust services exports, and, importantly, supportive policy measures,” said the KKR report.

Production-linked incentives and eased FDI rules are central to the government’s efforts to attract broader capital inflows. Anticipated rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India and the recent fiscal year budget, which injects meaningful stimulus for low- and middle-income households, further bolster this outlook.

“For investors, India also offers diversification benefits. Its equity market correlation with global indices has decreased — and the sheer scale of its economy is expected to unlock significant private sector opportunities over the next decade,” the report highlighted.

The report further stated that while a modest depreciation of the rupee is anticipated, this can be hedged. The core investment thesis remains compelling: in a volatile global environment, India’s stability, ongoing reforms, and resilient consumer base create a differentiated and increasingly scalable opportunity.

The State Council Information Office (SCIO) holds a press conference on China’s achievements in high-quality commerce development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025) in Beijing, capital of China, July 18, 2025. [Photo/Xinhua]

The retail sales of consumer goods in China grew 5.5 percent on average annually over the past four years, and are expected to top 50 trillion yuan (about 7 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2025, Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao said Friday.

The retail sales of consumer goods in China rose to 48.3 trillion yuan in 2024 from 39.1 trillion yuan in 2020, Wang said.

According to the World Bank, in terms of actual purchasing power, China’s retail sales of consumer goods surpassed that of the United States, reaching 1.6 times the level of the United States last year.

Consumption has contributed around 60 percent of China’s economic growth on average annually over the past four years, and the role of consumption as the economy’s main engine has continued to strengthen, Wang said.

Sales revenue under trade-in programs in China has surpassed 2.9 trillion yuan as of the end of June.

China’s service consumption continues to grow rapidly, with household spending on services reaching 46.1 percent last year, according to Wang.

During the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), China will continue to reduce restrictive measures in the service consumption sector, Wang said.

From 2021 to 2024, China imported consumer goods worth 7.4 trillion yuan, demonstrating the significant contribution of its vast market to global development.

China has refined its departure tax refund policy, and the total spending by inbound tourists reached 94.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, marking a remarkable increase of 77.8 percent year on year, Wang added.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Twelve Million Kenyans to Benefit from a New Social Protection Project Aimed at Strengthening Human Capital and Economic Inclusion

    Source: APO

    .

The World Bank Board of Directors approved the Second Kenya Social and Economic Inclusion Project (KSEIP2) which will strengthen the country’s social protection systems and scale up safety net support to twelve million citizens, including elderly, women, adolescents, children and other age specific vulnerable groups–while advancing human capital development and economic inclusion.

The KSEIP2, a successor to the recently completed Kenya Social and Economic Inclusion Project (KSEIP), will build on the success and lessons learned from the relevant interventions implemented to enhance delivery systems for inclusive access to social and economic inclusion. It is financed by a $127.5 million investment from the International Development Association (IDA).

Inclusive growth and poverty reduction are realized when there are more and better jobs as well as more accessible jobs for the poorest and most vulnerable populations,” said Qimiao Fan, World Bank Division Director for Kenya. “The project’s innovative elements will prepare today’s children and adolescents for healthy and productive adulthoods, help poorer families with sustainable livelihood enhancement, and ensure that hard-won gains are not lost to food insecurity during the times of drought or other crises.”

The project will scale up cash-plus programs for targeted age groups, complementing the existing cash transfers provided under the government’s flagship National Safety Net Program (NSNP). KSEIP2 will promote inclusive and sustainable employment through the introduction of climate-resilient income-generating activities and by linking beneficiaries to government social insurance schemes for long-term savings and resilience.

Given Kenya’s vulnerability to recurrent droughts in the North and Northeastern Counties, the project will also strengthen the efficacy of social protection system through investments in modernization and provision of emergency social assistance as temporary support to offset the adverse impact of such crisis.

The Government of Kenya is committed to supporting opportunities for every Kenyan family to sustainably exit poverty and vulnerability. The KSEIP2 Project supports the government’s ambition on disrupting the vicious cycle of poverty by focusing on investments in children and adolescents, as well as households with productive capacity,” said Shubha Chakravarty, Senior Economist and the Task Team Leader, World Bank. “This objective will be achieved by working in synergy with other relevant government programs.”

The project is consistent with the FY23-FY28 World Bank Group Country Partnership Framework (CPF), particularly with the objectives of increasing household resilience, national preparedness for shocks response, and priorities around human capital development and jobs agenda. It is also in line with Kenya’s vision 2030 while supporting the constitutional commitment to “provide social security for all Kenyans who cannot support themselves”.

Half-Year Financial Report for the period January – June 2025

Strong results and record inflows of assets under management

“We are delivering a strong second quarter in terms of earnings, with a net operating profit of EUR 16.3 million (15.6) that resulted in a return on equity of 19.1 per cent (18.3). With that, we can summarize the first half of the year with excellent results, with net operating profit of EUR 34.7 million and a return on equity of 19.2 per cent (18.2). This is the highest result we have ever reported for a first half-year.

“The second quarter was one of our all-time best, with net inflow of new client investments of EUR 328 million. The high net inflow means that for the first time, we can report a volume of actively managed assets on behalf of customers of over EUR 11 billion.

“Lowered market interest rates are putting pressure on net interest income for us as well as for other banks. Net interest income was down 9 per cent for the half year. Despite this, from the start of the year we were able to compensate for the decline with increased commission income, which rose by 13 per cent, primarily from our customers financial investment business.

“The world around us continues to present an array of uncertainties, and we see that our customers continue to be cautious about borrowing money. Despite this, our lending began to increase again during the quarter, albeit at cautious levels. Market interest rates have now halved since peaking just over a year and a half ago. We believe this development will contribute to increased lending activity in the second half of the year.”

Peter Wiklöf, Managing Director and Chief Executive

Good customer activity and strong credit quality led to solid results for the first half of 2025
Net profit of DKK 11.2 billion

Carsten Egeriis, Chief Executive Officer, comments on the financial results:

“In the first half-year, we continued our robust performance and delivered solid results in line with our expectations. We saw new business customer relations being established, a continued uplift in lending and a steady development in core income, and we maintained our focus on cost management. Furthermore, credit quality remained strong, resulting in a low level of loan impairments.

Our solid financial results and capital position enable us to be a strong financial partner, providing expert advice and standing by our customers and society in times of volatile markets.

With our increased investments in technology and customer offerings, we continue to deliver on our Forward ’28 strategy and are well on track to meet our guidance for the full year.”

    Solid performance in uncertain environment
Driven by good customer activity across our business and our ongoing commitment to efficiency, we achieved a net profit of DKK 11.2 billion and a return on equity of 13% in the first half of the year. These solid financial results reflect our successful execution and strategic focus in key growth areas.

Net interest income remained steady, as the adverse effect of the sale of the personal customer business in Norway and a reduction in deposit margins was offset by enhanced lending activity and our deposit hedge strategy.

Net fee income for the first half of the year was stable year on year, supported by growing demand for everyday banking services in the first quarter, although this demand decreased in the second quarter. Fee income related to capital markets and investment activity was impacted by the decline in investment appetite caused by the market volatility.

On the basis of continued cost discipline, the cost trajectory is in line with the full-year 2025 guidance. Furthermore, credit quality remained strong, supported by favourable macroeconomic conditions, including the employment rate. Loan impairment charges remained low and amounted to DKK 266 million in the first half of the year.

With prudent asset and liability management, our capital and liquidity positions remain solid, with substantial buffers well above regulatory requirements.

“In the first half of the year, we achieved a solid financial performance, fuelled by good customer activity that led to resilient core banking income and an increase in net trading income year on year. Net profit was stable, despite the impact of rates and market volatility. Our diversified business model and operational efficiency contributed to an improved cost/income ratio of 45.4% and a return on equity of 13.0%. We are on track to meet our 2025 guidance and are progressing towards achieving our 2026 financial targets,” says Cecile Hillary, Chief Financial Officer.

    H1 2025 vs H1 2024
Total income of DKK 27.9 billion (DKK 28.0 billion in the first half of 2024)
Operating expenses of DKK 12.7 billion (DKK 12.8 billion in the first half of 2024)
Loan impairments of DKK 266 million (net reversal of DKK 99 million in the first half of 2024)
Net profit of DKK 11.2 billion (DKK 11.5 billion in the first half of 2024)
Return on shareholders’ equity of 13.0% (13.1% in the first half of 2024)
Total capital ratio of 22.4% and CET1 capital ratio of 18.7% (total capital ratio of 22.5% and CET1 capital ratio of 18.5% in the first half of 2024)

    Resilient macroeconomic outlook amid uncertainty
Despite the challenges posed by geopolitical turbulence and market volatility, the macroeconomic environment in our operating markets remains robust. The Nordic economies continue to exhibit resilience.

The economies are increasingly supported by increased household spending power and lower interest rates. However, this has not translated into improved consumer sentiment, as retail customers remain cautious and consumer confidence is low.

According to the latest macroeconomic outlook by Danske Bank Research, we continue to expect robust economies with high employment rates and single-digit growth, particularly in Denmark.

“Nordic businesses still have a cautiously positive outlook, and we share their view that growth is likely to become moderately higher, despite the uncertainty hanging over the global economy. Though conditions are in place with higher real incomes and lower interest rates, we do not expect a strong recovery. Households remain deeply worried about the economic situation, which could hold growth back, but there is also a potential for the situation to improve,” says Las Olsen, Head of Macro Research.

    Personal Customers
Profit before tax amounted to DKK 4,217 million in the first half of 2025 (H1 2024: DKK 5,028 million). The decrease was mainly due to a decline in net interest income caused by lower deposit margins, a decline in fee income that was mainly the result of positive one-offs in the first half of 2024 and relatively subdued refinancing activity, as well as to slightly higher loan impairment charges. These were partly offset by rising deposit volumes and the impact of deposit hedging. Both income and operating expenses were affected by the divestment of the personal customer business in Norway. Loan levels remained stable, and deposits increased 5%.

    Business Customers
In the first half of 2025, we saw continuously good progress in terms of customer inflow and a positive development in lending volumes, and business with existing customers remained strong across our mid-sized customer segment. Profit before tax amounted to DKK 5,085 million, an increase of 23% from the same period last year (H1 2024: DKK 4,140 million). The increase was driven by loan impairment reversals. Net fee income also increased, although the effect was offset by lower income from our leasing operations.

    Large Corporates & Institutions
In the first half of 2025, we achieved solid financial results. Our efforts to attract new corporate customers outside Denmark and to strengthen customer relations across our markets have improved our position within cash management. Furthermore, we maintained our leadership within sustainable finance. Profit before tax decreased to DKK 4,544 million, or 9%, from the level in the same period last year, with the decrease driven by higher loan impairment charges.

    Danica
Net income at Danica decreased to DKK 714 million in the first half of 2025, down 25% from the level for the same period in 2024 due to a decrease in the insurance service result, which was impacted by a strengthening of provisions related to legacy life insurance products in run-off. The insurance service result for the health and accident business for the first half of 2025 recorded a loss, however, Danica saw an improvement during the first half of 2025 supported by a positive trend in the treatment and prevention of long-term illness and injury that was driven by intensified efforts with new healthcare solutions and improved digital solutions.

    Northern Ireland
Residential mortgage lending volumes continued to grow, reflecting an increased market share of new business in Northern Ireland. Financial performance remained positive with profit before tax of DKK 1,110 million in the first half of 2025, 18% higher than for the same period last year.

    Outlook for 2025
We maintain our guidance and expect net profit to be in the range of DKK 21-23 billion. The outlook is subject to uncertainty and depends on economic conditions.

  • Sensex, Nifty open lower amid FII selling pressure

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Indian equity indices opened lower on Friday, with heavyweights such as Axis Bank and Bharti Airtel among the top losers on the BSE benchmark.

At 9:25 am, the Sensex was down 171 points or 0.21% at 82,087, while the Nifty slipped 35 points or 0.14% to 25,075.

In the Sensex pack, M&M, Tata Steel, Power Grid, L&T, UltraTech Cement, Infosys, Tata Motors, BEL, NTPC, TCS, Trent, and Maruti Suzuki emerged as top gainers. On the other hand, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tech Mahindra, HDFC Bank, Eternal (Zomato), HUL, Sun Pharma, Bajaj Finance, ICICI Bank, Titan, and Bajaj Finserv were among the major losers.

On the sectoral front, auto, IT, PSU banks, metal, realty, media, energy, infrastructure, PSE, and commodities witnessed gains, while financial services, FMCG, and private banks traded in the red.

“In July so far, India has underperformed most global markets, with the Nifty slipping by 1.6%. A key contributor to the decline has been consistent selling by FIIs. There’s a clear pattern in FII activity this year,” said Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

“They were net sellers in the first three months, turned buyers for the next three, and now in the seventh month, the trend has again shifted toward selling — unless some positive triggers reverse the current downtrend,” he added.

On the institutional front, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers for the second consecutive session on July 17, offloading equities worth ₹3,694 crore. Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued their buying streak for the ninth straight session, purchasing equities worth ₹2,820 crore.

Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities, noted that the Nifty ended lower for the fifth time in seven sessions on Thursday, but still held above the rising trendline drawn from the May 9 lows.

“Technically, Thursday’s daily candle formed a bearish engulfing pattern, which aligns with our earlier view — that a close above 25,245 and then 25,340 was necessary for bulls to regain control. Hence, 25,000 remains a crucial support level, while 25,340 acts as key resistance,” he said.

In Asia, markets were mostly trading in the green, with Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Jakarta posting gains, while Tokyo and Seoul traded lower. US markets closed higher on Thursday, buoyed by positive investor sentiment.

  • MIL-OSI Banking: [Unboxing] Galaxy Z Flip7: The Compact AI Smartphone in the Palm of Your Hand

    Source: Samsung

With its pocket-friendly compact design and stylish aesthetic, the Galaxy Z Flip series has remained a fan favorite — and now it’s back, more sophisticated than ever.

Making its debut at Galaxy Unpacked 2025 in Brookyln, the Galaxy Z Flip7 instantly grabbed attention with its significantly larger FlexWindow and innovative AI features — all optimized for the foldable form factor.

From design to usability, Samsung Newsroom unboxed the Galaxy Z Flip7 to explore how the device has been taken to the next level.

▲ The Galaxy Z Flip7 and its packaging

Right Out of the Box: First Impressions of the Galaxy Z Flip7
▲ Contents of the Galaxy Z Flip7 box

The cover of the slim black package features a design element inspired by the Galaxy Z Flip7, creating a minimal yet premium impression. The Galaxy Z Flip7 box contains the device, a USB-C cable and a simple user manual.

    ▲ The Galaxy Z Flip7

When lifting the device out of the box, the first thing that stands out is how light and compact it feels in one hand. The Galaxy Z Flip7 is the slimmest model in the Galaxy Z Flip series yet, measuring just 13.7mm thick when folded.

▲ The Armor FlexHinge provides smooth, reliable folding over extended use.

▲ The Galaxy Z Flip7 is slimmer than ever, measuring 13.7mm thick when folded and 6.5mm when unfolded.

The Armor Aluminum Frame and Armor FlexHinge create a sleek but strong appearance, conveying a sense of stability when held in the hand.

▲ The back of the Galaxy Z Flip7

In a first for the Galaxy Z series, the Blue Shadow color is available in a luxurious navy tone — enhancing the Galaxy Z Flip7’s iconic design and making it stand out even more.

FlexWindow: Capturing High-Quality Selfies on a Larger Screen, Without Unfolding
▲ A comparison of the FlexWindow sizes between the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Z Flip7

The most noticeable change in the Galaxy Z Flip7 is its FlexWindow. The bezel surrounding the dual cameras measures just 1.25mm thick, making the 4.1-inch FlexWindow — which spans the entire surface — the largest ever featured in the Galaxy Z Flip series.

Even when it’s folded, users can easily handle essential daily tasks directly from the FlexWindow, taking the out-of-your-pocket, ready-to-use foldable experience to the next level.

▲ Front view of the Galaxy Z Flip7 with the FlexWindow

When the screen is turned on, its bright and vivid display provides a clear, expansive view. Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip7 delivers a peak brightness of up to 2,600 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate, allowing users to enjoy a variety of content with stunning clarity.

Dragging the camera icon to launch FlexCam opens a wide camera preview on the FlexWindow. When users turn on the Cover camera effects feature, first introduced on the Galaxy Z Flip7, the ring that surrounds the dual camera hole will change color depending on the shooting mode, immediately capturing the users’ attention: white for standard, yellow for photo and red for video. This allows the users to see the current mode at a glance.

▲ The activated FlexCam displays its status with colored rings around the camera lenses.

▲ The Zoom Slider on the FlexWindow

The Zoom Slider on the FlexWindow allows for intuitive zooming in or out with a simple swipe, making it easier to adjust the camera angle for selfies. When taking full-body shots or group photos with friends, the Auto Zoom feature automatically adjusts the framing based on the subject’s position, ensuring a well-balanced composition.

▲ Real-Time Filters on the FlexWindow

Meanwhile, users can apply filters in real time directly on the FlexWindow, allowing them to capture their desired look without additional editing. Thanks to this feature, users can take the perfect selfie — using only the FlexWindow — to mark their first encounter with the Galaxy Z Flip7.

A New FlexWindow Optimized for AI
The FlexWindow becomes even more powerful when combined with intelligent AI features. With the latest Android 16-based One UI 8, the Galaxy Z Flip7 offers a UX optimized for the form factor, enabling a more intuitive and seamless AI experience right from the FlexWindow.

Long pressing the power button launches the AI agent to activate Google Gemini. After initiating the camera view and asking a question like “Can you recommend an outfit color that matches today’s makeup?”, a natural conversation follows, with real-time styling tips provided to complement the user’s makeup.

▲ Users can activate Google Gemini directly from the FlexWindow. (*To listen to the audio, click the speaker button at the bottom of the video)

With the Galaxy Z Flip7, users can effortlessly handle everyday tasks — such as adding calendar events or getting local recommendations — using only voice commands from the FlexWindow. Moreover, users can also engage in a conversation to receive real-time information, just like chatting with a friend.

Taking it a step further, Now Bar, located at the bottom of the FlexWindow, enables users to instantly control music and video playback, as well as quickly check information from various apps and get real-time updates. Meanwhile, Now Brief delivers personalized information based on location, time and usage patterns — which can also be accessed without unfolding the device — further enhancing everyday convenience.

    ▲ Now Brief

    Unfolded: More Powerful, More Versatile
Even when the device is folded, the Galaxy Z Flip7 offers versatility for users. When it’s unfolded, there is even more that the Galaxy Z Flip7’s main display has to offer.

▲ A comparison of the main displays of the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Z Flip7

The larger screen and expansive feel of the Galaxy Z Flip7 immediately stand out when placed side by side with its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip6. The 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display delivers vibrant image quality and a smooth refresh rate, offering a more immersive viewing experience.

The Galaxy Z Flip7 is also the first in the Galaxy Z series to support Samsung DeX. By unfolding the device and connecting it to an external display, mouse or keyboard, users can instantly turn it into a portable workstation.

Compact in form yet powerful with AI, the Galaxy Z Flip7 redefines the foldable mobile experience, offering seamless, ready-in-your-pocket AI usability and expanded functionality when unfolded. Samsung looks forward to how the Galaxy Z Flip7 will shape users’ everyday life.

Clearstream plays an important part in the Australian debt securities market. It is important the RBA and ASIC, as co-regulators of clearing and settlement facilities operating in Australia, are able to have sufficient oversight of such facilities. The licence granted by ASIC will support this oversight.

The RBA has completed an initial licensing assessment of Clearstream against the relevant obligations under Part 7.3 of the Corporations Act 2001. The RBA and ASIC have also entered into a memorandum of understanding with Clearstream’s home regulators, Banque centrale du Luxembourg and the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier. The RBA will rely on the supervision of Clearstream’s home regulators, where appropriate, consistent with the Reserve Bank’s Approach to Supervising and Assessing Clearing and Settlement Facility Licensees.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Gillibrand Statement On House Passage Of The Genius Act

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New York Kirsten Gillibrand

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand applauded House passage of the GENIUS Act, landmark legislation that will establish a regulatory framework for stablecoins. As the lead Democratic senator on the bill, Senator Gillibrand shepherded the legislation to passage in the Senate in June.

“House passage of the GENIUS Act is a historic milestone in our bipartisan effort to regulate stablecoins. This bill will empower American businesses and consumers and enable them to take advantage of the next iteration of financial innovation,” said Senator Gillibrand. “A result of serious bipartisan negotiations, the GENIUS Act will protect consumers, enable responsible innovation, and safeguard the dominance of the U.S. dollar. This bill targets illicit finance, places limitations on Big Tech, puts in place ethical guardrails, and strengthens national security. The GENIUS Act is landmark legislation that will help maintain American global competitiveness, now and into the future.”

Senator Gillibrand, alongside Senators Hagerty (R-TN), Scott (R-SC), Lummis (R-WY), and Alsobrooks (D-MD), introduced the GENIUS Act earlier this year. The bill passed out of the Senate Banking Committee with bipartisan support in March 2025, and the Senate passed the full bill with strong bipartisan support in June 2025.

Senator Gillibrand has been working on cryptocurrency legislation since 2022, when she and Senator Lummis introduced the Lummis-Gillibrand Responsible Financial Innovation Act, a comprehensive bipartisan framework for cryptocurrency regulation. The framework was re-introduced in 2023. In 2024, Gillibrand and Lummis also introduced a stablecoin bill that included many of the provisions that passed in the GENIUS Act.

  • MIL-OSI China: Europe urged to diversify trade markets over US tariff coercion, supply chains disruption

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

As Washington presses ahead with additional tariffs on products from the European Union (EU) and beyond, European officials and experts are urging the diversification of trade markets to mitigate the damage that such coercive financial statecraft is inflicting on global supply chains.

TARIFF GAME SETTING OFF CHAIN REACTION

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Saturday that his administration would impose 30 percent tariffs on EU and Mexican exports, arguing that bilateral trade had long been unbalanced and lacked reciprocity.

The Irish Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald described the tariff threat as “volatile” and “not helpful at all.” “That poses a challenge for Ireland, for Europe, for the world,” she told Xinhua at a press conference in London.

Countries across Europe have been warning about the impact of the seemingly unrelenting tariff assaults on their economies.

The Bank of Slovenia estimated that U.S. tariffs could indirectly disrupt the broader European value chain and impact about 15,000 jobs in Slovenia, a significant number in a country of just 2.1 million people.

The Bank of England also said in its latest Financial Stability Report that the global economy faces rising downside risks, citing U.S. tariffs, and despite a new trade agreement between Britain and the United States in May, a further escalation in trade disputes globally could amplify financial stress and drag on economic growth in Britain.

Companies of all sizes, from those exporting to the U.S. to manufacturers heavily reliant on global supply chains, are feeling the strain that the tariffs are placing on their operations.

Neb Chupin, founder of Croatia’s Hermes International, a successful fig jam producer in the U.S. market, said, “With 10 percent tariffs, we are losing about 20,000 U.S. dollars a week. What would happen with 30 or even 50 percent tariffs? I cannot even sleep at night as the situation is very unstable.”

With 40 percent of exports going to the U.S., Finland’s pharmaceutical industry could also be severely affected by potential U.S. tariffs. Johanna Sipola, deputy CEO of Keskuskauppakamari, or the Finnish Chamber of Commerce, called the tariffs “unrealistic” and warned that the greater risk is the uncertainty they create.

“If the tariffs were implemented, the repercussions for international pharmaceutical production would be significant. The industry’s delivery chains are unusually global, and even minor disruptions can trigger substantial changes in medicine prices and demand,” Sipola said.

Beyond the immediate effects, the high-stakes tariff game is setting off a chain reaction across global supply chains and geopolitical dynamics.

Gavran Igor, an economic analyst from Bosnia and Herzegovina, said that the longer-term impact of the tariffs could prove even more damaging for Balkan manufacturers that are integrated into EU-based industries, particularly automotive supply chains.

Czech Republic’s Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura said that exports to the United States account for less than 3 percent of the country’s total exports. However, the country would also be indirectly affected through its European partners who purchase Czech goods and components.

    STRENGTHENING COOPERATION WITH MULTI-PARTNERS URGED

Inevitably, even countries with modest trade ties to the world’s largest economy can still feel the ripple effects of Washington’s unpredictability. In response, experts recommend that European nations broaden their trade partnerships, especially with China, Southeast Asia and other regions.

“Europe must, in the long term, become more independent from the American market. A joint free trade zone with the ASEAN countries and the rapid ratification of the agreement with Mercosur are urgently needed,” Dirk Jandura, president of the Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services, said in a statement after Trump’s new tariff announcement.

Mario Boselli, chairman of the Italy China Council Foundation, said that the shifting dynamics might prompt Europe to reconsider its external economic strategy. In his view, strengthening cooperation with China is a “highly strategic choice.”

“If economies, like the EU, China, the United Kingdom, Brazil and India, keep global trade open, the U.S. tariffs’ impact on global supply chains will be lower. That’s the opportunity,” said Carlo Altomonte, associate professor of the Department of Social and Political Sciences of Bocconi University in Milan.

Martin Geissler, Partner at the management consultancy Advyce & Company, echoed the suggestions by sharing Germany’s auto industry as an example. “German automakers have often not yet recognized the growth prospects that exist in Africa and many emerging countries,” Geissler said, contrasting this with China’s strategic engagement with multi-partners.

Bernardo Mendia, Secretary General of the Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is leading a Portuguese delegation to the ongoing China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing.

A key factor driving Portugal’s participation this year, in his words, is the rise of protectionism, logistical disruptions and geopolitical shifts. In the face of these challenges, China offers a distinctive platform to develop innovative solutions, business models, and collaborative partnerships, he said.

Looking ahead, experts believe that Washington’s trade policies could ultimately backfire on the U.S. economy itself.

“The U.S. needs many of our industrial products, which cannot be easily replaced in the short term. This allows German manufacturers of these goods to largely pass on the tariffs in their prices to the detriment of the U.S. economy,” said Juergen Matthes, head of International Economic Policy, Financial and Real Estate Markets Research Unit at the German Economic Institute.

    US Senate News:

Warnock Renews Effort to Address Bias in Housing Appraisals, Help Families Build Generational Wealth through Homeownership

Senator Reverend Warnock’s legislation would empower Georgians with more data and tools to fight bias that would lower their homes’ values
For most Americans, the largest driver of wealth is their home. This makes it important to have accurate, unbiased home valuations
Research from Brookings has found homes in Black neighborhoods are valued roughly 21% to 23% below what their valuations would be in non-Black neighborhoods
In March, Senator Warnock introduced a comprehensive legislative package of housing bills to address the ongoing housing affordability and availability crisis in the United States
ICYMI from The Atlanta Voice: Warnock leads Senatorial effort to even the playing field in home appraisals
Senator Warnock: “This bill is an important next step in helping Georgia families and all Americans realize the full value of their homes, and it empowers them with more data and tools to fight bias that would lower their homes’ values”
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and five of his Senate colleagues introduced new legislation to address appraisal bias in the home buying and selling processes. Housing appraisals are supposed to provide an objective estimate of a home’s market value to ensure homebuyers pay a fair price and homeowners receive the full value of their home. Unfortunately, systemic bias in the appraisal process has disadvantaged families of color for far too long. To combat appraisal biases faced by many current and aspiring homeowners, Senator Warnock’s Appraisal Modernization Act empowers Georgians with more data and tools to fight bias that would lower their homes’ values. The legislation would:
Increase transparency to support oversight and enforcement against bias by requiring the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) to publish an online database of property-level appraisal and other home valuation data that lenders collect in connection with a mortgage application.
Protect and empower consumers by codifying a consumer’s right to appeal a home valuation (also known as a Reconsideration of Value (ROV)) or request a second appraisal and directing the development of standardized policies to ensure consistent treatment of consumers who request an ROV or second appraisal.
Together, these provisions will empower consumers to realize the full value of their homes. The urgency of this legislation was only further heightened when, last week, the Trump administration announced it was ending the federal task force dedicated to removing racial bias from the appraisal process.
“Home valuations are a critical part of the mortgage lending process and ensuring families can build generational wealth through homeownership,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “This bill is an important next step in helping Georgia families and all Americans realize the full value of their homes, and it empowers them with more data and tools to fight bias that would lower their homes’ values.”
“I am very proud to continue the work I started as County Executive to make homeownership more equitable and accessible. As County Executive I signed a law that outlawed appraisal bias in Prince George’s County – and now it’s time we outlaw it across the nation. Home ownership should not be just a dream for the rich but an opportunity for all. Many Marylanders see home ownership as the surest way to build wealth, and they’re right. This legislation will increase transparency, protect consumers, and give Marylanders a true chance to thrive,” said Senator Alsobrooks.
“Too many families of color suffer from systemic biases in the home appraisal process,” said Senator Booker. “One of the largest drivers of wealth for Americans is their home, and the color of your skin should not be a determinant of your home’s value. This bill is a critical step in ensuring more reliable appraisal methods, and empowering consumers to appeal potentially discriminatory valuations.”
“For far too long, the American Dream of buying a home has been kept out of reach for families of color by a system that is fundamentally broken,” said Senator Kim. “Every family should be able to achieve that dream, and this bill will take common sense steps to make the changes needed to make those dreams come true.”
Inconsistency in the appraisal market can disrupt the entire housing ecosystem by improperly inflating or deflating home values, while bias can perpetuate historic disinvestment in communities of color and contribute to the widening racial and ethnic wealth and homeownership gaps. That is why industry stakeholders and fair housing advocates have long supported increasing transparency in appraisal data and why most responsible lenders believe ROV is an important part of maintaining the integrity of the appraisal process. Several studies have also identified a clear relationship between lower valuations and Black neighborhoods and revealed overt references to race in appraisals. On average, today White families hold $1.3 million in wealth, compared to $211,000 for Black and $227,000 for Latino families. For most Americans, the largest driver of wealth is their home. This makes it important to have accurate, unbiased home valuations.
“An appraisal has the power to determine the value of a consumer’s most important financial asset and can hold the key to determining whether the consumer is able to purchase a permanent home rather than rent, access credit on reasonable terms, and build wealth for generations to come,” said Nikitra Bailey, Executive Vice President of the National Fair Housing Alliance® (NFHA ). “NFHA commends Senator Warnock and his colleagues for a sensible bill designed to help consumers, appraisers, and lenders obtain the data necessary to ensure home valuations are fair and consistent.”
“The Housing Policy Council (HPC) has long advocated for extending access to GSE data to all market participants, to enhance risk management models and practices across the housing finance ecosystem. Shared access to all government appraisal data would be a good first step to accomplish this worthy goal. HPC looks forward to working with Senator Warnock on this important policy objective,” said Ed DeMarco, President of the Housing Policy Council.
“As President of NAMB, I will always support any legislation that ensures the fairness, protection, and privacy of homebuyers, and I applaud Senator Warnock for leading this effort. The reality is that we must be thorough in the quest to protect consumers, and we hope that your colleagues will consider this important bill as it navigates the legislative process,” said James Nabors II, President of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers.
“The Appraisal Modernization Actis a vital first step toward remedying the decades of discrimination that have been baked into the home valuation system. The public appraisal database will enable researchers to develop more reliable valuation methods that do not rely on old data tainted by unacceptable attitudes and practices. And strengthening the consumer’s right to appeal a defective valuation will help them to protect their home equity going forward,” said Andrew Pizor, Senior Attorney, National Consumer Law Center
“For most homeowners, their home represents family, stability and their primary financial asset,” says Laura Arce, senior vice president, Economic Initiatives at UnidosUS. “The economic value of that home includes many factors, but the race or ethnicity of its owner should not be one of them. UnidosUS supports the Appraisal Modernization Actand applauds its sponsors, Senators Warnock, Alsobrooks, Blunt Rochester, Kim, Warren, and Booker. The home appraisal industry is overdue modernization, and this bill will bring needed transparency and a common sense right to appeal to the appraisal process. American families should not have to continue to leave equity behind.”
As a member of the Senate Banking Committee, which oversees federal housing policies, Senator Warnock has worked to increase affordable housing and illuminate a path to homeownership, a cornerstone of the American Dream. As one of twelve brothers and sisters growing up in public housing in Savannah, Senator Warnock deeply understands the importance of having a place to call home and homeownership. In March 2025, Senator Warnock introduced a comprehensive legislative package of housing bills to address the ongoing housing affordability and availability crisis in the United States. In the past few years, Senator Warnock voted for government funding legislation that increased America’s housing supply, strengthened housing affordability, and addressed the homelessness crisis, including by: increasing the supply of affordable housing nationwide with funding to build 10,000 new rental and homebuyer units; extending funding for the Yes In My Backyard (“YIMBY”) grant program to support efforts to increase our nation’s housing supply and lower housing costs through state and local zoning changes; and delivering $275 million in new funding for Homeless Assistance Grants to help address homelessness in communities across the country and providing new resources to better connect people experiencing homelessness with health care services. Senator Warnock has also secured nearly $80 million in housing investments to provide affordable housing options for Georgians at all income levels and repair hazardous housing conditions in low-income housing units.
In addition to Senator Warnock, the Appraisal Modernization Act is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Andy Kim (D-NJ), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) joined ABC News Live Prime with host Linsey Davis to discuss the Trump administration’s decision to add medical debt back onto credit reports. The administration is working to vacate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) medical debt rule finalized in January 2025. The interview follows a Senator Warnock-led effort to demand the CFPB share relevant data and any communications it had with entities during the process that would profit from its decision.

“This is an issue that impacts literally millions of Americans,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “Medical debt is not a good predictor of whether or not people will pay [their debts]. There are a lot of mistakes as it turns out around medical billing.”

“[Medical debt] drives peoples’ scores down, making it very, very difficult if not impossible to get a mortgage, to get a car loan, to start a small business. As your credit score goes down, of course, everything becomes more expensive. That seems to be a theme of the Trump administration. They’re making everything more expensive,” added Senator Warnock.

Senator Warnock, a member of the Senate Finance Committee which oversees the federal tax code, continues to stand up in defense of Georgia consumers by holding the CFPB under President Trump accountable. In February, Senator Warnock questioned Trump administration CFPB nominees at a Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee Hearing. During the hearing, Senator Warnock asked the nominees if they agreed with President Trump on the CFPB being, ‘A very important thing to get rid of’ and if the agency would address the 266,560 outstanding complaints from Georgians in a timely manner.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congressman Brad Sherman Condemns Settler Violence, Urges Arrests in Killing of U.S. Citizen

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA)

Washington, DC — Today, Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) released the following statement:

I am the Co-Chair of the Israel Allies Caucus, the Ranking Member of the Congress-Knesset Friendship Group, and a lifelong advocate for an ironclad U.S.-Israel relationship. It is in the spirit of that support that I wholeheartedly condemn the heinous recent terrorist murder by extremist Israeli settlers of Sayfollah Musallet, a young Palestinian American visiting family in the West Bank. Just today I discussed this with Israel’s Consul General Israel Bachar and will be expressing these views to Ambassador Yechiel Leiter tomorrow.

Mr. Musallet was attacked on his family’s property in Area B of the West Bank, where no settlements may be constructed and no settlers should be present. All settlement outposts in Area B, particularly those associated with this incident, should be dismantled. Further fueling the outrage are reports that the assailants prevented ambulances from reaching Mr. Musallet for hours while there still may have been an opportunity to save his life.

I join U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee in calling this crime what it is: a “criminal and terrorist act.”

Terrorism, whether its targets be Israelis or Palestinians, is unacceptable and unjustifiable. Tolerance for terrorism anywhere and by any perpetrator is a grave threat to the safety of both Israelis and Palestinians alike. In addition, the U.S.-Israel relationship requires that the Government of Israel brings to justice anyone who commits such a heinous act against an American citizen.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Three Memphis Bank Robbers Convicted at Trial

    Source: US State of California

A federal jury in Memphis, Tennessee, convicted three men today for their roles in a violent bank robbery conspiracy, involving five bank robberies and an attempted sixth, in which the robbers shot two people. The defendants were found guilty of four bank robberies and using firearms during some of those robberies. Four of their co-defendants have pleaded guilty.

“The bank robberies committed by these seven defendants included gun-point threats, instilling fear and chaos in innocent victims going about their days,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “Their actions terrorized bank employees and customers alike. We are grateful to our prosecutors, the FBI, and our local law enforcement partners for bringing these dangerous individuals to justice and helping make the Memphis community safer.”

“The hard work and determination of the FBI and its partners cannot be overstated,” said Assistant Director Jose A. Perez of the FBI Criminal Investigative Division, “We are proud that our actions held these criminals accountable for their harm to the Memphis community.”

Evidence at trial proved that between April 2023 and December 2023, the defendants, Courtney Trenell, 34; Devin Hinds, 36; and Joshua Cribbs, 33, all of Memphis, conspired to rob banks in and around Memphis. Four of the co-conspirators, Robert Haley, Travis Drain, Marquarius Trenell, and Monterrio Trenell, already pleaded guilty to bank robbery and using a firearm during the robberies.

During the Aug. 11, 2023, robbery of a branch of Truist Bank, Hinds raised a gun and shook it back and forth at a bank customer to instill fear and deter her from notifying law enforcement. He then served as a getaway driver. Hinds also drove a getaway car during the Dec. 22, 2023, robbery of a branch of the Independent Bank where a co-defendant pointed a semi-automatic military-style rifle at bank employees.

Courtney Trenell and Cribbs helped rob branches of the Bank of Bartlett and First Horizon Bank on Oct. 20, 2023. The defendants planned to rob the banks, which are directly across the street from each other, at the same time to confuse law enforcement and evade capture. Cribbs entered the Bank of Bartlett with a trash bag and threatened bank employees into handing over money. Cribbs unknowingly took at least one dye pack, which exploded after the robbers fled, releasing red dye that stained the stolen cash. During the Bank of Bartlett robbery, Courtney Trenell operated a second getaway vehicle stationed about a mile from the robbery, aiding one of the robbers in fleeing the area.

At trial, an FBI special agent testified that the defendants spoke over conference calls before and after the robberies, which the government argued was to coordinate the crimes. An FBI analyst testified that DNA evidence from Courtney Trenell and Hinds was found inside their respective getaway vehicles.

In total, the group stole over $170,000 cash from five bank robberies. The sixth robbery attempt was unsuccessful and ended in a shoot-out between the co-defendants and an armed security guard where the robbers shot two victims. Co-defendants Haley and Drain coordinated the five robberies and one attempted robbery throughout the conspiracy, while Marquarius Trenell robbed the Truist Bank on Aug. 11, 2023, as well as the Bank of Bartlett with Monterrio Trenell, and others, on Oct. 20, 2023.

Defendants Travis Drain and Mario Patterson accost bank employees on Dec. 22, 2023, while Devin Hinds waits outside in a getaway car.

Cribbs is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 22, and Courtney Trenell and Hinds are scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 23. Their co-defendants who earlier pleaded guilty will face sentencing later this year. A federal district judge will determine sentences after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Hinds faces a maximum penalty of life in prison for his use of a firearm during a bank robbery; Courtney Trenell and Cribbs each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for their roles in the robberies.

A grand jury indicted an eighth co-defendant, Mario Patterson, 45, of Memphis, for his role in the conspiracy, as well as the individual bank robberies and firearm crimes he committed. He faces trial later this year and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The FBI and the Memphis Police Department Safe Streets Task Force investigated the case.

Trial Attorney Ashleigh Atasoy of the Criminal Division’s Violent Crime and Racketeering Section (VCRS) and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gregory A. Wagner, Stephen Hall, and Tony Arvin for the Western District of Tennessee prosecuted the case.

This case is part of the Safe Streets Task Force’s efforts to prosecute violent crimes in Memphis, Tennessee and surrounding areas.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Cline Introduces Bipartisan Don’t Sell My DNA Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Ben Cline (VA-06)

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Ben Cline (R-VA) and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) introduced the bipartisan Don’t Sell My DNA Act, a bill aimed at strengthening consumer privacy by safeguarding genetic data obtained from individuals through relationships with biotech companies.

In recent years, more Americans have begun to utilize at-home DNA testing services for additional insight into their personal health and ancestry lineage, the need to safeguard this sensitive information has never been more vital. The Don’t Sell My DNA Act ensures that genetic data cannot be treated as just another corporate asset to be sold off when biotech or genetic testing companies undergo bankruptcy.

This bipartisan legislation serves as the House companion to S.1916, introduced in the Senate by Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), along with Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA).

This legislation updates the current Bankruptcy Code to explicitly list genetic information in the definition of “personally identifiable information” and requires companies to provide written notice and obtain consumer consent before selling, leasing, or using their genetic data during bankruptcy proceedings. Additionally, it mandates that any genetic data not part of an approved transaction between entities is to be permanently deleted by the trustee or debtor in possession of this critical data.

“Bankruptcy should not lead to a fire sale of Americans’ most personal information,” Rep. Ben Cline said. “Your DNA is not just another line item that can just be sold without the knowledge of the consumer. It is private, sensitive data that belongs to you. This bill helps ensure that genetic information is not sold off to the highest bidder when a company files for bankruptcy.”

“People looking for long-lost relatives likely didn’t expect that their genetic data could be sold to the highest bidder. There is rightful outrage about the 23andMe plans, and Congress must step in to safeguard Americans’ privacy,” said Rep. Zoe Lofgren. “Our bipartisan Don’t Sell My DNA Act should race through both chambers and become law because it’s a straightforward way to protect our most sensitive data.”

The Don’t Sell My DNA Act is in response to the recent bankruptcy filing of 23andMe. Under current law, the Bankruptcy Code protects certain forms of personal information from being sold, such as one’s Social Security number, but fails to include personal genetic information. This bill closes this glaring loophole and brings the bankruptcy code to the 21st century to protect this personal and vital information.

Congressman Ben Cline represents the Sixth Congressional District of Virginia. He previously was an attorney in private practice and served both as an assistant prosecutor and a Member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Cline and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Botetourt County with their two children.
