    The Honourable Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the appointments of Graham Flack, Douglas Hodson, and Anne Giardini, to the Judicial Compensation and Benefits Commission.

    The Judicial Compensation and Benefits Commission, also known as the Quadrennial Commission, is established under the Judges Act (the Act) to examine the adequacy of the salaries and benefits of the federally appointed judiciary.     Biographies

    Graham Flack of Ottawa is appointed as the member nominated by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. Mr. Flack received degrees in political science and economics from Dalhousie and Oxford University where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He is a former law clerk of the Supreme Court of Canada and graduated with an LL.B. from Dalhousie University and an LL.M. from Harvard University. Mr. Flack began his career in the Privy Council Office and worked on the Quebec referendum campaign, the Quebec Secession Reference and Clarity Act. Following 9/11 he became Director of Operations and led work on the Canada-US Smart Borders Declaration, as well as Canada’s first National Security Policy. He held senior executive roles at Natural Resources Canada and the Department of Finance where he was Assistant Deputy Minister, International Trade and Finance and worked on the G7 and G20 response to the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. From 2010-2013, he was Associate Deputy Minister then-Acting Deputy Minister at Public Safety Canada. From 2013-14, he was Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet at the Privy Council Office. From 2014-18, he was Deputy Minister of Canadian Heritage. From 2018-2022, he was Deputy Minister of Employment and Social Development Canada. From 2022-2024, he was Secretary of the Treasury Board. Mr. Flack is the founding chair of the Deputy Minister Committee on Innovation and Deputy Minister Champion for the Federal Youth Network and for Dalhousie University.

    Douglas Hodson, K.C., of Saskatoon is appointed as the member nominated by the judiciary. Mr. Hodson attended the University of Saskatchewan and earned a B.Comm. (with honours) in 1981 and a LL.B. (with distinction) in 1984. He was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1985. Mr. Hodson is a partner at MLT Aikins LLP in Saskatoon since 1984. He focuses on commercial litigation and has significant experience in complex arbitrations, transportation law, and shareholder disputes. He has argued significant cases before all levels of court in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario and before the Federal Courts and the Supreme Court of Canada. He was appointed King’s Counsel in 2007. Mr. Hodson is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. He is one of the most distinguished community leaders in Saskatoon. His volunteer portfolio is diverse and extensive, and includes active involvement with a number of professional, business and social organizations. His significant contributions to his profession and community have been recognized on numerous occasions.

    Anne Giardini, K.C., of Toronto is appointed Chair following her nomination by the other two members of the Judicial Compensation and Benefits Commission. Ms. Giardini is a Canadian business executive, journalist, lawyer, and writer. She earned a B.A. from Simon Fraser University and a LL.B. from the University of British Columbia. She also holds an LL.M. from Cambridge University. She was admitted to practise in Ontario, British Columbia, and Washington State. From 1985 to 2020, Ms. Giardini clerked at the Court of Appeal for British Columbia, articled at Bull Housser & Tupper (now Norton Rose), practised at Mawhinney & Kellough (now Dentons) in Vancouver, before moving to Italy to work for a US law firm. In 1994, she joined Weyerhaeuser Company Limited, Canadian subsidiary of Weyerhaeuser Company, an international forest products company with a head office in Washington. She was Canadian vice-president and general counsel from 2006 to 2008 and president from 2008 to 2015. Since 2015, she is a sole corporate director. She was appointed King’s Counsel in 2009. Ms. Giardini is an active volunteer and has served as Chair of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, Vancouver International Writers Festival, UniverCity at SFU, and Simon Fraser University as deputy chair. She is also a supporter of Plan Canada and volunteer for Vancouver YWCA’s Women of Distinction Awards and Young Women in Business. She served as the 11th chancellor of Simon Fraser University from 2014 to 2020. She has been on the boards of Hydro One, mining companies, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. and other companies. Ms. Giardini was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in January 2013 for her fundraising efforts for Plan Canada’s Because I’m a Girl campaign. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2016 and was appointed an Officer of British Columbia in 2018.

    Biography

    Justice Kelli L. Potter grew up as the fourth generation on her family’s farm in Dauphin, Manitoba. She received her Bachelor of Arts (Conflict Resolution Studies) from the University of Winnipeg, before pursuing her Bachelor of Laws at the University of Manitoba. She was called to the Manitoba Bar in 2005.

    Justice Potter started her legal career in Winnipeg. She then relocated to Southwest Manitoba and joined Patersons LLP in Brandon as an associate, becoming a partner in 2019. Throughout her career, she has practiced predominantly in the area of family law, appearing in all levels of Court in Manitoba.

    Justice Potter has been a presenter on various family law topics for Continuing Professional Education through the Manitoba Bar Association and the Law Society of Manitoba. Additionally, she has been a guest speaker at the University of Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law, and Assiniboine Community College on topics related to family law, access to justice issues, alternative dispute resolution, and legal ethics. Active in the legal profession, she was a Life Council Member of the Manitoba Bar Association. She has also served as a Bencher for the Law Society of Manitoba, an Executive member of the Manitoba Bar Association Family Subsection, and as a past President of the Western Manitoba Bar Association. She was an active volunteer with a variety of sports and arts organizations.

    Linda A. Shin, General Counsel at the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario, Criminal Law Division, in Toronto, is appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Toronto. Justice Shin replaces Justice B.A. Allen (Toronto), who elected to become a supernumerary judge effective November 4, 2022.

    Biography

    Justice Linda A. Shin was born in Toronto and is proud to be the daughter of Korean immigrants. She received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto. She was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 2000.

    Justice Shin was General Counsel at the Crown Law Office – Criminal, where she conducted appeals to the Court of Appeal and trial prosecutions on complex matters, including homicides and allegations against police officers. Previously, she worked as Chief Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General for Ontario, and as an Assistant Crown Attorney in the Toronto Crown Attorney’s Office. Prior to joining Ontario’s Criminal Law Division, she was a civil litigation associate at McCarthy Tétrault, where she articled.  

    Justice Shin is committed to mentorship and education. She has been an articling principal and a mentor to law students. She has volunteered as an instructor for the trial advocacy course at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law for several years. She has been a board member of the KCWA (Korean Canadian Women’s Association) since 2018; this non-profit organization provides education, counselling and other services to support Korean-Canadians in a variety of areas including violence against women and the elderly and newcomer settlement.

    Biography

    Justice Pierre Soucy obtained his Bachelor of Laws from Université Laval in 1993 and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1994.

    Justice Soucy is originally from Trois-Rivières. Since 1999, he has been a partner in the law firm Lambert Therrien s.e.n.c. in Trois-Rivières. Until his judicial appointment, he specialized in civil and commercial litigation, and was widely recognized for his skills in labour and construction law. He has also been involved in major litigation cases, pleading before all levels of the Quebec judicial system.

    Justice Soucy has taught labour law, ethics, and deontology at the Université du Québec in Trois-Rivières, in addition to construction law at the Chemin-du-Roy school board. He was active in his community, participating in various charities and initiatives to benefit his fellow citizens. He was also a member of numerous boards of directors, and he served as Bâtonnier de la Mauricie in 2019. At the time of his appointment, he was also a member of the Comité d’enquête à l’éthique et à la déontologie for the school service centres in his region.

    Justice Soucy is a proud Trifluvian. He and his wife, Annie Jacques, are the proud parents of three children: Juliette, Pénélope, and Philippe.

    [EVANSTON, IL] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today visited the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian to honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Duckworth met with the museum’s Executive Director Kim Vigue, Board President Susan Kelsey and community leaders and members to discuss how she can help advocate for the Indigenous community at the federal level, as well as toured the museum that honors and highlights the history and culture of Indigenous peoples and communities.   • MIL-OSI Canada: Minister MacAulay announces research funding for an innovative, sustainable poultry sector

    October 15, 2024 – Guelph, Ontario – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

    Today, the Honorable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, toured the University of Guelph’s research facilities to meet with researchers and learn about their innovative work in support of a sustainable poultry sector. As part of his visit, Minister MacAulay highlighted that the Government of Canada is delivering an investment of $5,155,608 to the Canadian Poultry Research Council (CPRC) through the AgriScience Program – Clusters Component, an initiative under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

    This funding will allow the CPRC to partner on research that will ensure poultry welfare at all levels of the production chain, meeting the consumer demand for healthy and safe poultry products, and decreasing the environmental impacts of poultry farms—including ambient air quality, emissions, and the effect on humans and birds in the surrounding area.

    Some examples of Cluster activities include upcycling Canadian fruit waste to develop novel feed ingredients, managing environmental conditions to reduce the risk of avian influenza, researching alternatives to antimicrobials, and optimizing feed to reduce particulate matter emissions.

    Research funding in the poultry sector is crucial for the continued development of sustainable practices and improved animal welfare.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Snippet of Euclid Mission’s Cosmic Atlas Released by ESA

    With contributions from NASA, the mission will map a third of the sky in order to study a cosmic mystery called dark energy.
    ESA (the European Space Agency) has released a new, 208-gigapixel mosaic of images taken by Euclid, a mission with NASA contributions that launched in 2023 to study why the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. Astronomers use the term “dark energy” in reference to the unknown cause of this accelerated expansion.
    The new images were released at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan on Oct. 15.
    The mosaic contains 260 observations in visible and infrared light made between March 25 and April 8 of this year. In just two weeks, Euclid covered 132 square degrees of the southern sky — more than 500 times the area of the sky covered by a full Moon.
    The mosaic accounts for 1% of the wide survey Euclid will conduct over six years. During this survey, the telescope observes the shapes, distances, and motions of billions of galaxies out to a distance of more than 10 billion light-years. By doing this, it will create the largest 3D cosmic map ever made.

    This first piece of the map already contains around 100 million stars and galaxies. Some 14 million of these galaxies could be used by Euclid to study the hidden influence of dark energy on the universe.
    “We have already seen beautiful, high-resolution images of individual objects and groups of objects from Euclid. This new image finally gives us a taste of the enormity of the area of sky Euclid will cover, which will enable us to take detailed measurements of billions of galaxies,” said Jason Rhodes, an observational cosmologist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California who is the U.S. science lead for Euclid and principal investigator for NASA’s Euclid dark energy science team.
    Galaxies Galore
    Even though this patch of space shows only 1% of Euclid’s total survey area, the spacecraft’s sensitive cameras captured an incredible number of objects in great detail. Enlarging the image by a factor of 600 reveals the intricate structure of a spiral galaxy in galaxy cluster Abell 3381, 470 million light-years away.

    “What really strikes me about these new images is the tremendous range in physical scale,” said JPL’s Mike Seiffert, project scientist for the NASA contribution to Euclid. “The images capture detail from clusters of stars near an individual galaxy to some of the largest structures in the universe. We are beginning to see the first hints of what the full Euclid data will look like when it reaches the completion of the prime survey.”
    Visble as well are clouds of gas and dust located between the stars in our own galaxy. Sometimes called “galactic cirrus” because they look like cirrus clouds at Earth, these clouds can be observed by Euclid’s visible-light camera because they reflect visible light from the Milky Way.
    The mosaic released today is taste of what’s to come from Euclid. The mission plans to release 53 square degrees of the Euclid survey, including a preview of the Euclid Deep Field areas, in March 2025 and to release its first year of cosmology data in 2026.
    NASA’s forthcoming Nancy Grace Roman mission will also study dark energy — in ways that are complementary to Euclid. Mission planners will use Euclid’s findings to inform Roman’s dark energy work. Scheduled to launch by May 2027, Roman will study a smaller section of sky than Euclid but will provide higher-resolution images of millions of galaxies and peer deeper into the universe’s past, providing complementary information. In addition, Roman will survey nearby galaxies, find and investigate planets throughout our galaxy, study objects on the outskirts of our solar system, and more.

    Euclid is a European mission, built and operated by ESA, with contributions from NASA. The Euclid Consortium — consisting of more than 2,000 scientists from 300 institutes in 15 European countries, the United States, Canada, and Japan — is responsible for providing the scientific instruments and scientific data analysis. ESA selected Thales Alenia Space as prime contractor for the construction of the satellite and its service module, with Airbus Defence and Space chosen to develop the payload module, including the telescope. Euclid is a medium-class mission in ESA’s Cosmic Vision Programme.
    Three NASA-supported science teams contribute to the Euclid mission. In addition to designing and fabricating the sensor-chip electronics for Euclid’s Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) instrument, JPL led the procurement and delivery of the NISP detectors as well. Those detectors, along with the sensor chip electronics, were tested at NASA’s Detector Characterization Lab at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The Euclid NASA Science Center at IPAC (ENSCI), at Caltech in Pasadena, California, will archive the science data and support U.S.-based science investigations. JPL is a division of Caltech.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Charlottetown — PEI RCMP complete check stops and numerous traffic stops to promote Operation Impact

    Operation Impact is a traffic initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police . Each year, motor vehicle collisions kill about 2,000 Canadians, seriously injure another 10,000 people and injure about 165,000 citizens in this country. This year, the message to Canadians from Operation Impact 2024 is – Don’t risk lives with bad driving behaviours. Safety is literally in every driver’s hands.

    In support of Operation Impact, PEI RCMP conducted check stops and numerous traffic stops throughout the province from October 11th to 14th, 2024.

    • On October 11th, 2024, at 8:05 p.m. Queens District RCMP stopped a vehicle that was failing to maintain the driving lane. A 63-year-old woman was arrested for failing to comply with a breath demand.
    • On October 11th, 2024, at 8:55 p.m. Kings District RCMP received a call from the public that an individual was operating a motor vehicle while impaired. A 47-year-old man was arrested and provided breath samples over the legal limit.
    • On October 12th, 2024, at 7:01 p.m. PEI RCMP Traffic Services stopped a vehicle for speeding in Hampton, PE, and completed a roadside breath test with the driver, resulting in a seven-day license suspension.
    • On October 14th, 2024, at 11:11 p.m. Queens District RCMP stopped a vehicle for speeding on the Charlottetown Perimeter Highway. A 25-year-old female was arrested and provided breath samples over the legal limit.

This strategy supports green energy projects and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, leading Canada’s continued energy transition.

    The Government of Canada is taking further action on its Greening Government Strategy commitment to use 100 per cent clean electricity in federal buildings. This strategy supports green energy projects and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, leading Canada’s continued energy transition.

    Today, on behalf the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Quebec Lieutenant, George Chahal, Member of Parliament for Calgary Skyview, announced contracts totalling over $73 million, awarded to hep solar and South Head Switch Power, for the supply of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).  

    These contracts support the Government of Canada’s commitment to the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The announcement aligns with Public Services and Procurement Canada’s (PSPC) clean electricity initiative and Canada’s ongoing commitment to invest in renewable energy. These contracts will supply 100,600 RECs annually from new clean electricity solar facilities.

    This agreement will enable the Government of Canada to attribute its electricity consumption as being clean in regions where opportunities for new clean renewable sources are not yet available, while supporting the creation of new green energy facilities. The RECs will reduce up to 32,600 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (eCO2) for the Government of Canada’s real property operations, which is equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of more than 9,980 gas-powered passenger vehicles.  

    Furthermore, these contracts will help promote Indigenous business capacity in the clean energy sector and contribute to Canada’s efforts to strengthen economic relationships with Indigenous entrepreneurs. South Head Energy is an Indigenous-owned business, and South Head Switch Power is joint venture with Switch Power, which is registered with the Indigenous Business Directory.

    Today, we recognize Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, a time to extend our compassion and support to the many families across Canada who have experienced the loss of a child during pregnancy or early infancy. This day serves as a reminder that behind each statistic is a family forever changed by grief and loss.

    Too many Canadian families experience a perinatal loss each year. Families often face complex emotions. For many, the grief that accompanies the loss of a baby is indescribable, affecting the parents and their loved ones. Recognizing the emotional weight of such a loss, it is essential that families feel supported by their community and health care providers through tailored care, rooted in empathy and respect—as they navigate their personal grief journey.

    We can all contribute to making sure that no one feels isolated during such a difficult time. Loved ones provide crucial emotional support, while health professionals and community support groups play a critical role in providing the necessary information and emotional care during and after these moments.

    Canada’s Family-centred maternity and newborn care: National guidelines outline principles for supporting families experiencing perinatal loss. These include offering parents the opportunity to make informed choices, ensuring they have the time and space to grieve in a way that feels right for them, and receiving care that respects their personal and cultural preferences.     Alberta’s government is taking action to refocus the health care system so that every Albertan has access to a primary health care provider and timely, high-quality primary health care, no matter where they live.

    Alberta’s new primary care provincial health agency, Primary Care Alberta, will create a modern, more responsive and unified health care system that prioritizes patients, empowers front-line health care professionals and helps reduce pressures on the entire health system.

    The immediate priority of Primary Care Alberta is to ensure every Albertan has access to high-quality primary care services in all areas of the province, so all Albertans and their families are supported in their day-to-day health needs through every stage of life. The new primary care agency will focus on supporting integrated teams of family physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists to provide patients with the best care possible.

    “Standing up Primary Care Alberta is an important milestone in refocusing the health care system to put patients first and give our front-line experts the support they need to ensure Albertans are receiving the care they deserve.”

    Kim Simmonds, the current assistant deputy minister of strategic planning and performance at Alberta Health, will be appointed as chief executive officer of Primary Care Alberta. Simmonds brings a wealth of public and private sector experience to the role and has extensive experience working with stakeholders across the health care system. She has experience working with clinicians and understands the need for data and evidence-based decision-making when it comes to delivering primary care services to Albertans, no matter where they live.

They must belong to a health home where they are known and where they don’t have to tell their health story over and over again.     Modernizing Alberta’s Primary Care System (MAPS)

    In 2022, the Modernizing Alberta’s Primary Care System (MAPS) initiative was launched to recommend ways to strengthen Alberta’s primary health care system. Alberta’s government undertook extensive engagement with its primary care providers and stakeholders to develop a guide to strengthen primary health care in Alberta. The MAPS final report recommended creating a single governance structure that supports an integrated team of health care professionals with data sharing within and across sectors.

    Improving the coordination and delivery of primary care was also something Alberta’s government heard during provincewide engagement sessions held earlier this year as part of efforts to engage with Albertans and health care professionals on how to refocus the health care system. This made-in-Alberta solution is the first of its kind to be established in a provincial health care system. The agency is a dedicated organization to support governance, oversight, delivery, operation and coordination, a significant step being taken to improve the quality of health care delivery in the province.

    Quick facts

    • The Provincial Health Agencies Act enables the transition from one regional health authority, Alberta Health Services (AHS), to an integrated system of four sector-based provincial health agencies: primary care, acute care, continuing care, and mental health and addiction.
    • The agencies will be responsible for delivering integrated health services, ensuring Albertans receive timely access to care regardless of where they live.
    • Some of Primary Care Alberta’s longer-term priorities include:
      • Engaging physicians and providing leadership opportunities to lead their peers through the change process.
      • Incentivizing care models that improve health outcomes and patient experience.
      • Providing tools to primary care providers, such as enhancing the current Find a Doctor website and e-Referral, that benefit both providers and patients.
      • Setting standards for primary care so Albertans have consistent services.
      • Funding primary care networks that bring practitioners together to implement provincial initiatives and address regional needs.
      • Developing chronic disease care models to reduce the burden of chronic disease on patients and the health care system.
    • More than 30,000 Albertans have had the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas directly on the refocusing through in-person engagement sessions, online feedback forms and telephone townhalls.  
      • In addition to public engagement sessions, dedicated engagements were held with Indigenous communities, the francophone community and other key health partners.

    Province Recognizes Fire Prevention Week 2024 from Oct. 6 To 12

    As part of Fire Prevention Week 2024, which runs Oct. 6 to 12, Manitoba Municipal and Northern Relations is reminding all Manitobans of the importance of having working smoke alarms in their home.

    This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, ‘Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!’ strives to educate everyone about the importance of having a working smoke alarm in the home. This year’s campaign is reminding everyone to install, test and replace smoke alarms and make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory needs or physical disabilities.

    According to the National Fire Protection Association, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 per cent). Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

    Best practices for smoke alarms in the home include:

    • install smoke alarms in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on each level of the home;
    • test smoke alarms once a month by pressing the test button;
    • replace smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or stop responding when tested;
    • make a home fire escape plan and practice your plan so you know what to do should a fire happen.

    The Manitoba government and Office of the Fire Commissioner, along with the Manitoba Firefighters’ Burn Fund and Manitoba Association of Fire Chiefs, invites kindergarten to Grade 4 students across the province to draw a fire escape plan of their home and submit it along with a contest entry form to be entered in the contest to mark Fire Prevention Week. For contest entry details and prizing, and to learn more about Fire Prevention Week activities across the province visit: http://www.manitoba.ca/firepreventionweek.

    As part of the ongoing commitment to enhance fire safety, the department has established a new fund of up to $1 million to support fire prevention and public education initiatives for Northern Affairs Communities, off-reserve Indigenous families and northern remote communities across Manitoba.     Fire Prevention Week is held during the week surrounding Oct. 6 in Canada and the United States to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in October 1871.

    The Manitoba government is moving forward on its commitment to determine the feasibility of relocating Winnipeg’s rail lines by selecting Lloyd Axworthy as study lead, Premier Wab Kinew announced today. 

    “Manitoba’s rail lines are an essential part of what makes our province a central, economic hub and it’s important we explore the best options for its location,” said Kinew. “Dr. Axworthy is the best person to guide this process. With his proven leadership and commitment to our province, I know he will bring together the concerns of residents, the business community and all levels of government to bear on this important issue. We know this will be a long-term project and our government looks forward to receiving the results of this study.” 

    “It’s a propitious time to study the important relationship of the railways to our city and develop an integrated plan that can centre Winnipeg as the location of a major transportation hub,” said Axworthy. “Addressing long-standing issues regarding safety, security and the cost-effective transit across railroad properties and the relocation of certain railway lands opens significant opportunities for development of needed housing, and open space will be a key aspect of this study.”  

    Budget 2024 included a $200,000 investment for this initiative. The study, which has been called for by years by experts and community leaders, will explore relocating rail lines and yards from Winnipeg including the Canada Pacific Railway Ltd. rail yards as well as other lines, noted the premier. 

    “After years without any progress on a feasibility study, I’m excited to work collaboratively with important stakeholders,” said Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor. “This study will allow us to make informed decisions about how to best move forward and I look forward to seeing this important work continue.” 

    The study is expected to take two years and include interim reports before recommendations are released in the final report, noted the premier.

    Q3 bookings at €1.52 million, in line for 2024
    In Q3 2024, which is traditionally the weakest of the year, Sidetrade achieved bookings of €1.52 million in New Annual Contract Value (ACV), versus €2.49 million in the same period last year. As announced during the September 11 investor presentation, the expected slowdown in third-quarter bookings against a complex economic and political backdrop does not affect the Group’s positive outlook for the full 2024 fiscal year.

    In the first nine months of 2024, Sidetrade recorded €8.94 million for bookings in New Annual Contract Value (ACV), compared to €8.42 million year-over-year (+6%). Given the postponement of a number of new contracts in Q3 2024 – serving to bolster an already strong business pipeline for Q4 2024 – Sidetrade is expected to match or even exceed its historic bookings record on a full fiscal year basis, which was set in 2023 with €11.2 million achieved in new ACV terms.

    In Q3 2024, Sidetrade achieved revenue of €14.9 million, representing an increase of 33% and up 14% on a comparable scope basis (excluding the recent acquisition of SHS Viveon). This strong performance is attributable to several key factors.

    First, the robust momentum in revenue growth on a constant scope basis continues. As a reminder, in the first half of 2024, Sidetrade reported a 19% increase in its revenue with growth of 18% in revenue for SaaS subscriptions which was impacted by a 4% contribution from the CreditPoint Software business, consolidated as of July 2023. On a constant scope basis, growth in the Company’s revenue was therefore 15%, with a 14% increase in revenue for SaaS subscriptions. In line with this performance, Sidetrade (excluding SHS Viveon) sustained vigorous momentum over Q3 2024, posting a 14% increase in its total Company revenue and 15% revenue growth for SaaS subscriptions, driven by a record performance for half-year bookings.

    In addition, the consolidation of the SHS Viveon business – effective since July 1, 2024 – substantially contributed to this quarterly growth, delivering a positive impact of 19%. SHS Viveon generated revenue of €2.1 million in Q3 2024. Fully consolidated in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland and eastern European countries), SHS Viveon’s business represents a new growth driver for Sidetrade, with this geography now accounting for 14% of the Company’s total revenue.

    On the back of SHS Viveon’s consolidation, international markets now represent 68% of the Group’s revenue. With more than 70% of its workforce based outside France, Sidetrade is strongly positioned to capitalize on an increasingly globalized market, while leveraging a strong local presence in its strategic markets.

    Lastly, North America delivered the strongest growth, with revenue up 30%, representing €4.1 million over the period. This market will continue to play a pivotal role in Sidetrade’s growth trajectory.

    Analysis of the Company’s customer profiles (including the consolidated SHS Viveon) is underpinned by brisk growth of 53% in subscriptions with multinational corporations generating €2.5 billion-plus revenue. These contracts now account for more than half (52%) of Sidetrade’s total subscriptions and are expected to remain an important growth driver in the quarters ahead. The acquisition of SHS Viveon has helped accelerate this momentum, thanks to the business’ established portfolio of key accounts.

    Registration completed in France’s public invoicing portal

    Under France’s reform of electronic invoicing, Sidetrade was recently registered as a Dematerialization Platform Partner by the country’s Public Finance Department.

    While acknowledging that this initiative marks a step forward, Sidetrade does not regard it as providing a competitive advantage to its solutions and the Company is continuing to assess all options consistent with its targets for strategic development, both in France and internationally.

    In 2023, Crawford Lake was identified as an important site for studying the Anthropocene, a concept that identifies human activity as the dominant force changing the planet’s natural systems. The lake’s remarkable sediment record and location within a protected area have helped researchers discover the extent of our impact on the environment. Combining the natural and human histories of this site, the visitor centre serves as a community space and home for Indigenous art, artifacts, and educational resources.

    This project will include the replacement of windows, doors, and insulation. Upgrades to the HVAC systems will help to decrease the centre’s energy requirements and improve climate control to preserve and protect its artifacts. Finally, the funding will also help expand the facility with a new entrance space that will contain an accessible elevator. Overall, these upgrades will help the centre reduce operating costs and lower carbon emissions.

    • The federal government is investing $2,390,960 in this project through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program and Conservation Halton is contributing $5,099,040.

    • The GICB program was created in support of Canada’s Strengthened Climate Plan: A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy. It is supporting the Plan’s first pillar by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and helping develop higher resilience to climate change. 

    • The program launched in 2021 with an initial investment of $1.5 billion over five years towards green and accessible retrofits, repairs or upgrades. 

    • Budget 2024 announced an additional $500 million to support more projects through GICB until 2029.

    Southern Ontario has a growing and competitive electric vehicle (EV) sector. Businesses across the sector are developing advanced technologies to seize new growth opportunities. The Government of Canada is investing in these businesses so they can reach their potential and develop new possibilities for our country.

    Today, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) visited B.S.B. Manufacturing Ltd. (B.S.B), a Burlington-based machined components and parts manufacturer serving the automotive, agricultural and industrial product markets, to meet with employees and learn about the company’s ongoing shift to manufacture parts for electric vehicles. Minister Tassi was joined by Pam Damoff, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Consular Affairs) and Member of Parliament for Oakville North–Burlington.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Highway 101 — RCMP investigates two fatal collisions on Highway 101

    Kings District RCMP responded to two fatal collisions on Highway 101 over the weekend.

    On October 12 at approximately 8:26 a.m., Kings District RCMP, fire, and EHS responded to a five-vehicle collision on Highway 101 in Wolfville. RCMP officers learned that a transport truck travelling eastbound struck four vehicles that were stopped for construction on the highway. Two occupants of a black GMC Acadia, a 62-year old woman and a child, both of East Kingston, were located deceased at the scene. A third occupant of that same vehicle, a 40-year-old woman, was transported via EHS LifeFlight with life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported to police.

    On October 14 at approximately 3:50 p.m., Kings District RCMP, fire, and EHS responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 101 in Berwick. The initial investigation indicates a Dodge Journey was travelling westbound and a Ford F150 was travelling eastbound when they collided. The driver and sole occupant of the Dodge Journey, a 38-year-old man of Middleton, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 49-year-old driver and 19-year-old passenger of the F150, both of Greenwood, were transported to hospital by EHS with non-life threatening injuries.

    Highway 101 was closed for several hours during both incidents while an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist attended the scenes. Both investigations are ongoing.

    Our thoughts are with the victims’ families at this difficult time.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Nain — Nain RCMP arrests unruly airline passenger, charges laid

    Following the report of an unruly airline passenger on an October 13, Air Borealis flight, Nain RCMP arrested 32-year-old Monique Penashue of Happy Valley-Goose Bay for assault and other offences.

    At approximately 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, Nain RCMP received the report of the unruly passenger from Air Borealis. Penashue was allegedly intoxicated and had assaulted two individuals, including a pilot, during the flight. Upon arrival in Nain, airline passengers were removed from the aircraft and Penashue, who was found in possession of alcohol, was arrested without further incident.

    She is charged under the Criminal Code for the following offences:

    • Endangering the safety of an aircraft
    • Assault – two counts
    • Breach of probation

    She is charged under the Aeronautics Act for the following offences:

    • Endangering the safety or security of an aircraft by interfering with the duties of a crew member
    • Endangering the safety or security of an aircraft by lessening the ability of a crew member to perform their duties

    Penashue was remanded in custody over the weekend and attends court today.

    Parks Canada launches Indigenous Stewardship Policy, strengthening Indigenous connections to protected lands, waters and ice.

    Today, The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, announced his support of the Indigenous Stewardship Policy—prior to participating in a Ceremony at Thousand Islands National Park to honour and enact the policy with members of the Mohawks of Akwesasne and members of the Parks Canada Indigenous Stewardship Circle.

    This policy, which recognizes and supports Indigenous stewardship in all places Parks Canada plays a role in administering, will strengthen the connections between Indigenous Peoples and the protected lands, waters and ice located within their traditional territories, treaty lands and ancestral homelands—and advance measures identified in the Government of Canada United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act Action Plan.

    Co-developed in close collaboration with the Indigenous Stewardship Circle, a diverse group of Indigenous leaders, the Indigenous Stewardship Policy will guide the implementation of the Indigenous Stewardship Framework and create conditions that support cultural continuity, cultural safety, and healing for Indigenous Peoples.

    The new policy is grounded in four key principles:

    1.      Respect for Indigenous Rights, duties, and responsibilities: Acknowledging and respecting Indigenous rights and titles as recognized by Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution, both historic and modern treaties, and by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). This includes supporting Indigenous-led conservation and ensuring Indigenous voices are at the forefront of decision-making.

    2.      Fostering ethical spaces: Establishing and maintaining respectful relationships, grounded in truth-telling and culturally safe spaces. This also means that Parks Canada will work with Indigenous Peoples to support stewardship that is informed by Indigenous knowledge and worldviews.

    3.      Nurturing healthy, respectful relationships:  Supporting co-management arrangements where Indigenous governments and communities and Parks Canada work together as equals and in ways that respect Indigenous laws and protocols.

    4.      Ensure continuity of Indigenous culture and language: Indigenous stewardship of lands, waters and ice is place-based and distinct. This means that approaches will be shaped by the local context and will foster the safeguarding of cultural practices, languages, and ways of life.

    This policy will apply to all places Parks Canada plays a role in administering, including national historic sites, national parks, national marine conservation areas, and other protected heritage areas. It furthers Parks Canada efforts to pursue a respectful approach to the management and governance of protected areas that aligns with Indigenous ways of stewarding lands, water, and ice. This renewed approach is based what Parks Canada has heard for years from Indigenous partners, the evolution of Parks Canada’s relationships with Indigenous Peoples and the legal landscape of Indigenous rights.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Cole Harbour — RCMP seeking assistance from the public to identify a person of interest

    RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment is seeking assistance from the public to identify a man involved in an attempted robbery in Cole Harbour.

    On October 11, at approximately 6:46 p.m., RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment responded to a report of an attempted robbery at a recreational centre on Forest Hills Parkway. RCMP officers learned that a man approached four youths who were near the pedway, displayed a knife, and demanded jewelry from one of them.

    The man fled on foot when the youths said they were advising security. No physical injuries were reported.

    The man was wearing a black jacket, black pants, yellow shoes and had a mask over his face. The weapon is described as serrated bread knife approximately eight to ten inches in length.

    The investigation is ongoing.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Deer Lake — Deer Lake RCMP investigates shed fire, human remains located inside

    Deer Lake RCMP is investigating human remains that were found inside a burned shed on a residential property in Deer Lake on October 13, 2024.

    At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, police received a report of a shed fire on a residential property on Middle Road in Deer Lake. An occupant of the home was unaccounted for and was believed to be inside the shed. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. Male human remains were located inside the shed.

    A Fire Scene Investigator with the Fire Services Division of Justice and Public Safety attended the scene and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is engaged. The investigation is continuing.

    Deer Lake RCMP asks residents in the area to check for possible surveillance footage around the time of the fire and to report any information to the detachment at 709-635-2173.     Cereal crops are a staple of Canada’s agricultural sector. Last year, we exported 29.8 million tonnes of wheat, barley and oats, valued at $13.8 billion, and demand continues to grow.

    To support the competitiveness and sustainability of Canadian cereals, today, Terry Duguid, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and Special Advisor for Water and Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced up to $7.3 million in funding to Cereals Canada through the AgriMarketing Program and the AgriScience Program – Projects Component, two initiatives under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

    Cereals Canada is receiving up to $6,660,817 through the AgriMarketing Program to increase market access, improve customer support, and expand exports through initiatives like technical exchanges, market research, and knowledge sharing among stakeholders.

    Through the AgriScience Program – Projects Component, Cereals Canada is also receiving up to $674,249. This funding will support research on how environmental conditions impact cereal crop quality during the growing season. It will also expand milling expertise, establish oat quality standards, and compare Canadian wheat with international competitors to strengthen Canada’s place in the global market.

    By sharing key insights on the performance, functionality, and marketability of Canadian cereals with customers, producers, and partners, these projects will drive market growth. At the same time, by investing in research to help farmers adapt to environmental challenges, they will further build on Canada’s reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality, sustainable cereal grains.

    • In the last five years, Canada exported wheat to almost 100 countries with some of the largest buyers being in the United States, Indonesia, China and Japan.

    Today, families across Canada will receive their Canada Carbon Rebate for individuals, a payment that is making life more affordable for Canadians. The Canada Carbon Rebate – alongside measures like dental care, childcare, and others – contribute to the Government of Canada’s plan to help Canadian families to get ahead while ensuring big polluters pay their fair share.

    Today, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), was in Hamilton, Ontario, to announce the latest quarterly Canada Carbon Rebate payments are being delivered to their bank accounts and mailboxes. The Canada Carbon Rebate is helping households, small businesses, farmers and Indigenous communities across Canada to get ahead.

    A family of four residing in Hamilton will receive the Canada Carbon Rebate for individual payments every three months, meaning they will receive a quarterly cheque or deposit of $280. To discover more about how much your family could receive, please refer to the Canada Carbon Rebate amounts for 2024-25 for payment amounts applicable to your province.

    In addition to putting money in the pockets of families, the federal government announced the payment amounts for the new Canada Carbon Rebate for Small Businesses, which will deliver over $2.5 billion to about 600,000 Canadian businesses before the end of this year. This refundable tax credit will return a portion of the fuel charge proceeds from 2019-20 through 2023-24 to eligible small businesses, in jurisdictions where the federal fuel charge applies.

    The Canada Carbon Rebate is part of a suite of federal actions to help Canadians to get ahead, while simultaneously supporting holding the biggest polluters accountable in the fight against the climate crisis.

    Canada’s price on pollution is working.  When it comes to meeting Canada’s goals, emissions are down, and pollution pricing alone is delivering at least a third of the reductions needed, while delivering clean air and incentivizing job-creating greener investments in communities. As of today, emissions are down, while the economy grows and wages for Canadians are going up.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Third-quarter physician growth: Minister LaGrange

    “Growing Alberta’s physician numbers remains a top priority for our government, and I’m very pleased that the latest quarterly statistics from the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta show promising progress.   

    “At the end of September, there were 12,126 physicians registered in Alberta, an increase of 518 physicians, or 4.5 per cent, compared with the same time last year, with the greatest increase occurring in the Calgary area. We’ve also seen a net increase of 370 physicians since the end of the second quarter.

    “The data also reveals an almost five per cent increase in the number of family physicians over the same period last year, which is wonderful news for Albertans.

    “These record numbers reflect that there are more doctors registered in Alberta today than at any other time in the province’s history. The province has also seen its most significant third-quarter growth rate since before 2015. This demonstrates that our efforts to attract and retain physicians are paying off, but we recognize there is more to be done. We are committed to building on this momentum by strengthening primary health care, enhancing physician education and training, and advancing our Health Workforce Strategy to address physician supply challenges.
