  • MIL-OSI Canada: G7 Leaders’ Summit: Statement from Premier Smith

“Alberta has always been a place where bold, visionary people come together to think big and drive change. Our homegrown solutions are the answer to many of the urgent challenges leaders face on this year’s agenda.

“From the Rocky Mountains to the rolling prairies and dense forests – Alberta isn’t just a beautiful province, it’s a powerhouse of economic opportunity.

“With the fourth-largest oil reserves and ninth-largest natural gas reserves on earth, we are one of the most reliable and secure energy providers in the world. Our geography uniquely positions us to supply Asia, Europe and the world with the energy they need whether it’s oil, propane, liquified natural gas, hydrogen, ammonia and more.

“Alberta’s vast wealth of energy resources can bring billions of people globally out of energy poverty and reduce global emissions by displacing high-emitting fuels, like coal, with lower-emitting fuels like natural gas.

“No other democratic ally offers the same combination of stability, proximity and abundant energy reserves that Alberta has – and we have no plans of slowing down. We’re increasing production and reducing emissions with advanced technology and strong environmental standards, while protecting Alberta’s land, water and air for future generations to enjoy.

“Flying into Calgary, the vast stretches of prairie below offer more than a view. They tell the story of an agricultural powerhouse. Last year alone, Alberta exported $17.5 billion of agri-food products.

“Alberta’s hard-working producers and processors put food on tables around the globe, contributing to local and global food security.

“Home to world-class destinations and cinematic landscapes, the $12.7-billion tourism industry is booming in Alberta. Our picture-perfect views are boosting film and television production to an estimated gross domestic product of $864 million. Alberta’s commitment to low taxes and less red tape is sending a clear message: this is the place to invest, grow and succeed.

“Alberta’s strength comes from its people; we thrive in times of change and embrace new challenges. As we position Alberta as a serious player in global AI, and build our presence in tech, that same spirit continues to power progress across the board.

“Alberta is built on ambition, resilience and innovation. We’re not just open for business, we’re leading the way. It is with great pride that we welcome G7 leaders and visitors to this extraordinary place we call home.

“We stand ready to show the world what Alberta has to offer.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: Twyford condemns weak action by NZ over Israel’s ‘ruthless’ apartheid

    Asia Pacific Report

Labour MP for Te Atatu Phil Twyford criticsed the New Zealand government today for failing to take stronger action against Israel over its genocide and starvation strategy in Gaza, saying that at the very least the ambassador should be expelled.

Speaking at a rally in Henderson organised by the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa in West Auckland suburbs for the first time in the 88th week of protest, Twyford said: “The Israeli government is operating in an apartheid state.

“They subject the Palestinian people under their military.

“People who are under international law they are obliged to protect,” he told about 500 protesters.

“They are subjecting them to the most ruthless, most brutal system of apartheid.”

It was a story of “ethnic cleansing, dispossesion, terror routinely visited upon Palestinian people on a daily basis in their land”, said Twyford, who is Labour Party spokesperson on immigration, disarmament and foreign affairs.

“And it is being done, not only by the forces of Zionism, but by the Western world complicit, knowing, understanding and actively conniving in that dispossession and repression.”

    Widely condemned move
Twyford referred to the government’s move this week alongside four other countries to impose sanctions on two far-right ministers in the the Israeli cabinet, illegal settlers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, which has been widely condemned as too little and too late.

Labour MP Phil Twyford speaking at the Henderson pro-Palestinian humanitarian rally today . . . Palestinians are subjected by Israel to “the most ruthless, most brutal, system of apartheid.” Image: Asia Pacific Report

Leading British journalist Jonathan Cook this week criticised Britain, Australia, Canada and Norway along with New Zealand, saying they may have been “seeking strength in numbers” to withstand retaliation from Israel and the United States.

“But in truth, they have selected the most limited and symbolic of all the possible sanctions they could have imposed on the Israeli government.”

Israel was also condemned by speakers at the rally for its “unprovoked attack” on Iran and its strategy of forced starvation on the Palestinian people in Gaza and the repression in occupied West Bank.

The death toll in Gaza was almost 62,000 Palestinians — more than 17,000 of them children — and Israel had also killed at least 78 people in the first waves of attacks on Iran.

Meanwhile, in a statement today, the PSNA said it was appalled at the deportation of a Palestinian New Zealander from Egypt.

PSNA said it had conveyed to the Egyptian government its “shock and anger” at the deportation of Rana Hamida who had travelled to Egypt to take part in the Global March to Gaza.

“This Jew stands for Palestine” and “Sanction Israel now” placards at today’s Henderson rally. Image: APR

    Egyptian deportations over ‘global march’
Egyptian authorities have deported dozens of people, including Spanish, Swedish, Finnish, Moroccan, Greek and US citizens.

The Global March to Gaza is due to start this weekend in Egypt with thousands of people from throughout the world taking part.

PSNA co-chair John Minto said the march was to “express humanity’s outrage” at the ongoing Gaza-wide bombing and starving of the Palestinian population by Israel.

“Egypt’s action in deporting activists can only be seen as assisting Israel’s attacks against the Palestinian population,” he said.

“Unfortunately, Egypt has a long history of collaboration with the US and Israel to stifle the Palestine liberation struggle. This is in sharp contrast to the Egyptian people who are as appalled and angry as the rest of humanity at Israel’s horrendous war crimes.”

Minto said the following message from Rana as she returned to New Zealand — she was due at Auckland International Airport this afternoon:

    ‘The more we will roar’
“The Egyptian authorities, along with other governments, think that blocking humanity from this act of solidarity will stop because of them blocking people from being there and doing the job that they continue failing to do.

“They are so mistaken — the more complicit and enabling they get in their inaction and in this case their active participation, the more we will rise, and roar.

“We are escalating as you awaken the dragons within us.

“We will sing louder and we will walk longer — with our hiking shoes in the Sinai desert, or barefoot towards your embassies.

“We will disrupt your meetings, we will crowd your phone with calls and emails, and we will be the light that blinds your robotic heart and melts it alongside the lies you stand for.

“This is not about us, it is about HUMANITY within us that is dying and being oppressed in various forms, it is about the humans enduring hell in Gaza, West Bank and Falastine as a whole.

    “Muslims, Jews and Christians together.

    “It is about NEVER AGAIN.

“Boycott, divest — we will not stop we will not rest.”

    Expel Israeli ambassador call
In an earlier statement in the wake of Israel’s attack on Iran, PSNA called on the government to immediately expel the Israeli ambassador from New Zealand.

Minto said Israel’s strikes on Iran were “unprovoked, unilateral and a massive threat to humanity everywhere”.

“This is such a dangerous action, that diplomatic weasel words about Israel are not acceptable. Israel is an out-of-control rogue state playing with the future of humanity. We must send it the strongest possible message.”

“Israel’s using its often repeated lies and misinformation to attempt to justify it’s unconscionable violence and aggression.”

Minto pointed to Iran’s right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes.

“Even US intelligence officials have made is clear very recently that Iran is NOT on the way to produce a nuclear weapon.”

“And neither is Iran committed to the ‘annihilation’ of Israel.

    ‘Liberation for Palestine’
“Iran does not support Israel as a racist, apartheid state and wants to see liberation for Palestine.

“In this, Iran has, along with the overwhelming majority of countries in the world, called for an end to Israel’s military occupation of Palestine, the end of its apartheid policies directed against Palestinians and the return of Palestinian refugees.”

New Zealand had the same policies, Minto said.

However, he condemned NZ’s “appeasement of this apartheid state, as our government and other Western countries have done over 20 months”.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Pappas, Morrison Introduce Legislation to Exempt Small Businesses from Trump’s Tariffs

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Chris Pappas (D-NH)

Today Congressman Chris Pappas, a small business owner, and Congresswoman Kelly Morrison, a member of the House Small Business Committee, introduced the Small Business Liberation Act in the House. This legislation, which was introduced in the Senate last month, would exempt the more than 34 million U.S. small businesses from President Trump’s catastrophically high tariffs enacted on April 2, 2025, which are effectively a national sales tax. Highlighting the urgent need for this legislation, Pappas and Morrison held a press conference with small businesses from across the country, including Mark Carpenter, founder of New Hampshire small business GenTent.

Small businesses across the country have been raising the alarm that the Trump administration’s chaotic, costly, and unpredictable tariff war will put them out of business in a matter of weeks or months if nothing is done. New Hampshire exports accounted for 7% of the state’s gross domestic product in 2023, the highest percentage of exports of any New England state, meaning that New Hampshire businesses are more vulnerable to retaliatory tariffs.

Earlier this week Congressman Pappas met with GenTent owner Mark Carpenter at his small business of just 12 employees to hear about the impact of tariffs on his business. It’s estimated that because of tariffs the cost of a new part his business is producing will go up by 30%, costing the company another $100,000 just in tariffs.

“This administration’s reckless tariffs are effectively a national sales tax on businesses and families. I’ve heard directly from New Hampshire businesses about how deeply these tariffs will hurt their bottom lines. That’s why I’m pushing legislation that would rein in the President’s indiscriminate, wide-sweeping tariffs announced earlier this year,” said Congressman Chris Pappas. “The Small Business Liberation Act would exempt all small businesses from the tariffs announced by the Trump administration on Liberation Day. While the President and Republicans in Congress are turning their back on working families, I remain committed to continuing to fight to lower costs, support small businesses, and strengthen our economy.”

“Small businesses across the country have made clear: Trump’s tariffs are posing an existential threat to their business,” said Congresswoman Kelly Morrison. “Today, we’re introducing legislation to give them the immediate relief they need to survive. Article 1 of the Constitution gives Congress the authority to levy tariffs – and it’s time Congress reclaims its power and does its job. This bill has now been introduced in the House and the Senate – and we need the Republican majority to stand up for America’s 34 million small businesses and bring this to a vote immediately. Our small business owners don’t have the luxury of time – we need to act now.”

This legislation is endorsed by Small Business Majority and Main Street Alliance.

“Small Business Majority’s research found that 53% of small businesses are concerned about tariffs negatively impacting their business and 77% are concerned about having a negative impact on the U.S. economy as a whole. Small Business Majority’s research found that 53% of small businesses are concerned about tariffs negatively impacting their business and 77% are concerned about having a negative impact on the U.S. economy as a whole,” said John Arensmeyer, Founder and CEO of Small Business Majority. “These concerns aren’t theoretical – millions of small firms are struggling right now with increased costs, finding new sources of supplies and navigating the uncertainty of tariffs that are on one day and put on hold the next. Small businesses have nowhere else to turn for help but Congress, and they need lawmakers to step in and stop this paralyzing and destructive cycle before irreparable harm is done to our nation’s job creators.”

“Main Street Alliance members from across the US have been contacting our team about the real impact of tariffs on their businesses. 81.5% of respondents to our recent survey indicated that they will raise prices on consumers to offset the costs from tariffs. 31.5% of respondents indicated that they would lay off employees as a result of the tariffs. The continued unpredictability, self-dealing, and conflicting rationale for the trade war will hollow out Main Street and large Corporations will pick up the scraps. That’s why MSA strongly supports the Small Business Liberation Act. Let’s get it done,” said Richard Trent, Main Street Alliance Executive Director.

    Watch the press conference here.

Read the full text of the bill here.

    Background:

Pappas has loudly and strongly opposed President Trump’s sweeping tariffs on New Hampshire’s #1 trading partner, Canada, and U.S. allies. In April, Pappas joined colleagues to highlight the negative impact President Trump’s widespread tariffs will have on New Hampshire’s small business community and how they will raise costs for Granite Staters, calling on the administration to reverse course. Pappas has signed two discharge petitions to force a vote on legislation to overturn the Administration’s harmful tariffs on Mexico and Canada, the U.S.’s two biggest trading partners. He is also a cosponsor of the Prevent Tariffs Abuse Act, which amends the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to explicitly state that the authority granted to the President under the Act does not include the authority to impose duties, tariffs, or quotas on imports to the US.

NASHVILLE, TN, June 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, founder of the Tennessee-headquartered Isha Foundation, has been recognized with the Global Indian of the Year award by the Canada India Foundation (CIF). The award was presented at CIF’s annual gala in Toronto on May 22, 2025, in acknowledgment of his international contributions to environmental sustainability, social upliftment, and inner well-being.

Sadhguru’s leadership in global ecological efforts—most notably the Conscious Planet – Save Soil movement and Cauvery Calling campaign—has mobilized millions worldwide. These initiatives focus on restoring soil health, promoting agroforestry, and encouraging responsible environmental stewardship, supported by scientific research and policy engagement.

During the award ceremony, Sadhguru announced that the CAD 50,000 honorarium would be donated to Cauvery Calling to further its work in revitalizing the Cauvery River basin. “This is not recognition for me, but for the thousands of volunteers working relentlessly to serve both people and the planet,” he said.

Beyond environmental causes, Sadhguru’s work through the Isha Foundation spans education, rural development, and accessible wellness programs across more than 50 countries. In the U.S., the Foundation operates in 34 states, with its primary center located on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. The institute has become a destination for both spiritual exploration and community engagement, contributing to local economies and tourism.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: A new approach to COVID-19 immunizations

Due to changes to the federal COVID-19 vaccine procurement process earlier this year, provinces and territories are now responsible for purchasing COVID-19 vaccines for residents. Alberta’s government remains committed to ensuring Albertans who are at highest risk due to COVID-19 have access to immunizations.

Starting this fall, Albertans who are at a higher risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19 will be able to access the vaccine through public health clinics in the province.

“In previous years, we’ve seen significant vaccine wastage. By shifting to a targeted approach and introducing pre-ordering, we aim to better align supply with demand – ensuring we remain fiscally responsible while continuing to protect those at highest risk.”

Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services

In the 2023-24 respiratory virus season, a total of just over one million COVID-19 vaccines were wasted, or 54 per cent of Alberta’s order that year. Based on the Center for Disease Control costing estimates of $110 per vaccine dose, this means that about $135-million worth of vaccines were never used and were discarded.

Now that Alberta’s government is responsible for procuring vaccines, it’s important to better determine how many vaccines are needed to support efforts to minimize waste and control costs.

This new approach will ensure Alberta’s government is able to better determine its overall COVID-19 vaccine needs in the coming years, preventing significant waste.

In the fall, the COVID-19 vaccine program will be rolled out in four phases, beginning with the highest-risk groups and gradually expanding to include more Albertans over time.

    Phase 1:

Through Phase 1, provincially funded COVD-19 vaccines will be available free of charge to residents of seniors supportive living accommodations and home care clients.

    Phase 2:

Through phases two, three and four, to prevent significant waste, the COVID-19 vaccine will only be available through public health clinics. Community pharmacies will no longer be administering COVID-19 vaccines.

In Phase 2, provincially funded COVID-19 vaccines will be available free of charge for:

    • Those six months and older with underlying medical conditions or compromised immune systems, or in congregate living accommodations.
    • Albertans on social programs (i.e. AISH, income supports, and individuals experiencing homelessness)

    Phase 3:

Through Phase 3, the COVID-19 vaccine will be available to all Albertans 65 years and older. Albertans in Phase 3 will be required to cover the full costs of the vaccine. Work is underway to determine what the final cost will be per vaccine.

    Phase 4:

Through Phase 4, remaining COVID-19 vaccines will be available to other Albertans who will be required to pay the full costs of the vaccine.

Starting Aug. 11, eligible Albertans will be able to signal their intent to receive the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines by pre-ordering through the Alberta Vaccine Booking System. Following the pre-order, Albertans will receive a reminder notification via text message or email prompting them to book their immunization appointment in early October. When individuals book their immunization appointment for fall/winter 2025-26, they can also pre-order their vaccine for 2026-27.

It is recommended Albertans talk to their primary care provider to determine what is the best course of action for their needs.

    Quick facts

    • Recently, the Federal Drug Administration in the United States stopped recommending routine COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women and healthy children.
    • As of April 1, Alberta has taken over the responsibility for procuring and funding COVID-19 vaccines for the province.
      • Alberta will begin procuring COVID-19 vaccines annually through the National Bulk Purchasing Program.
    • For the 2025-26 season, approximately 485,000 doses have been ordered to support the targeted COVID-19 immunization program.
    • Based on the Center for Disease Control costing estimates of $110 per vaccine dose, the cost to taxpayers for the COVID-19 vaccine should not exceed $49 million, much of which will be offset through cost recovery in phases 3 and 4. The actual cost per dose and for the program is yet to be determined.
    • Estimated budget costs for the 2025-26 season are approximately $2 million for RSV and $19 million for influenza.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Elder abuse: Know the signs, reduce the risk

As Alberta’s senior population continues to grow, Alberta’s government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring every Albertan senior can live with dignity, security and free from harm.

Elder abuse is a serious issue worldwide, including in Alberta. It is estimated that one in 10 seniors in the province experiences some form of abuse — an unacceptable reality Alberta’s government is determined to change.

Alberta’s government is taking action by collaborating with community partners to implement the province’s Elder Abuse Prevention Strategy and deliver practical, on-the-ground solutions. Over the next two years, more than $8 million will be invested in prevention and intervention efforts to protect seniors.

“Seniors are valued members of our communities and deserve to be treated as such. Ending elder abuse requires collective action — all Albertans have a role to play in recognizing the signs of abuse and taking action to spot it, stop it, and reduce the risk.”

Jason Nixon, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services

This funding will strengthen initiatives like the Coordinated Community Response Program, expand elder abuse shelter services, and grow the Safe Spaces Program, which increases shelter access for seniors in rural and Indigenous communities by repurposing vacant rooms in seniors’ lodges.

“Raising awareness about elder abuse is essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of older adults. Our partnership with the Government of Alberta has strengthened community responses across the province, helping to prevent abuse, support those affected, and build a future where all seniors are treated with dignity and respect.”

Joanne Blinco, Executive Director, Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council

Each year on June 15, communities worldwide observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Many seniors who experience abuse feel ashamed, afraid, or unsure of where to turn to help, and this day serves as a critical opportunity to raise public awareness and encourage open conversations about elder abuse to break the silence.

On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Alberta’s government will launch a province-wide campaign to raise awareness and connect Albertans to available resources. As part of this initiative, survivors of elder abuse have courageously shared their stories to help others know they are not alone, and that help is available. To ensure broad accessibility, campaign materials will be translated into 14 languages.

All Albertans can become advocates for the safety and well-being of seniors by learning the signs of elder abuse and spreading the word. Join the conversation online using the hashtag #EndElderAbuse. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. For information and support, the 24-hour Family Violence Info Line is available by phone or text at 310-1818. • MIL-OSI Canada: Tribunal Initiates Inquiry—Thermal Paper Rolls from China

Source: Government of Canada News (2)

Ottawa, Ontario, June 13, 2025—The Canadian International Trade Tribunal today initiated a preliminary injury inquiry into a complaint by McDermid Paper Converters Limited of Markham, Ontario, Media Cash Register Inc. of Saint‑Laurent, Québec, and Custom Paper Ltd. of Richmond, British Columbia, that they have suffered injury as a result of the dumping and subsidizing of thermal paper rolls from China. The Tribunal’s inquiry is conducted pursuant to the Special Import Measures Act (SIMA) as a result of the initiation of dumping and subsidizing investigations by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

On August 11, 2025, the Tribunal will determine whether there is a reasonable indication that the alleged dumping and subsidizing have caused injury or retardation, or are threatening to cause injury, as these words are defined in SIMA. If so, the CBSA will continue its investigations and, by September 10, 2025, will make preliminary determinations. If these preliminary determinations indicate that there has been dumping or subsidizing, the CBSA will then continue its investigations and, concurrently, the Tribunal will initiate a final injury inquiry.

The Tribunal is an independent quasi-judicial body that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Finance. It hears cases on dumped and subsidized imports, safeguard complaints, complaints about federal government procurement and appeals of customs and excise tax rulings. When requested by the federal government, the Tribunal also provides advice on other economic, trade and tariff matters.

Any interested person, association or government that wishes to participate in the Tribunal’s inquiry may do so by filing a Form I–Notice of Participation.

    Source: US Department of Labor

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s Interagency Labor Committee for Monitoring and Enforcement requested that the government of Mexico review an alleged denial of workers’ rights at Tubos de Acero de Mexico S.A., a manufacturer of seamless steel pipe located in Veracruz, Mexico.

The U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Trade Representative co-chair the Interagency Labor Committee.

The request follows a May 14, 2025, petition filed by SINAIN, a Mexican union.

Filed under the USMCA’s Rapid Response Mechanism, the petition alleges that the company is systematically denying SINAIN members their right to freedom of association and collective bargaining through acts of anti-union discrimination and interference with union activity.

After the Interagency Labor Committee found sufficient and credible evidence supporting the petition’s allegations, the U.S. government submitted a request for Mexico to review the case using the RRM.

The Mexican government has 10 days to decide whether to conduct a review and 45 days from today to investigate the claims and present its findings.

  • MIL-OSI: KGNCLOUD Introduces Zero Threshold Gold Mining for Crypto’s New Era

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

New York City, NJ, June 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —

The cryptocurrency market is undergoing a new round of explosive changes—Bitcoin has broken through the $100,000 mark, the US has relaxed regulations, and Russia has fully legalised mining. These monumental shifts are reshaping the global financial landscape. In response, cloud mining is increasingly recognized as a pivotal pathway for ordinary investors seeking entry into the market, offering compelling advantages such as zero hardware investment and freedom from ongoing operation and maintenance costs. The following key trends and strategies will help you seize the unique opportunities presented by this evolving digital economy.

This period of explosive growth is not merely a fleeting surge but signals a profound maturation of the cryptocurrency sector, driven by emerging global forces. A “Global Vision: New Mining Forces in 2025” highlights critical developments:

    • Political Capital Entry: The Trump family and Hut 8 have jointly established American Bitcoin Corp (ABTC), with a Nasdaq listing countdown approaching. This strategic alignment predicts Bitcoin will exceed $170,000 in 2026, signaling significant mainstream validation.
    • Game Between Energy Countries: Russia is strategically leveraging the US mining machine tariff war to absorb global computing power, while Canada and Kazakhstan, with their low-electricity price areas, are becoming the primary power sources for the migration of mining sites, creating new hubs of digital asset production.

At the heart of KGNCLOUD’s offering is its revolutionary Zero Threshold Digital Gold Mining initiative, embodying an inclusive solution designed to dismantle barriers to entry. This groundbreaking feature empowers users with:

    • Free Trial Mining: Register today to receive $100 in experience money, allowing users to verify KGNCLOUD’s profit model without any initial risk.
    • No Hardware/Electricity Pressure: The platform fully bears all operation and maintenance costs, ensuring users enjoy pure profit sharing, free from the burdens of significant hardware investment, energy consumption, or technical upkeep.
    • Flexible Withdrawal in Multiple Currencies: KGNCLOUD supports rapid withdrawals of 11 major cryptocurrencies, including USDT, BTC, and ETH, with funds credited to user accounts within a swift 5 minutes.

“This is a transformative period for digital assets,” commented Joy Bennett, “The shift in market dynamics and regulatory landscapes creates unprecedented opportunities, making accessible solutions like cloud mining increasingly vital for broader participation. We are witnessing a convergence of mainstream finance and decentralized technology, opening doors that were previously unimaginable for stable digital asset accumulation.”

The benefits of KGNCLOUD’s platform extend far beyond just eliminating hardware and operational costs. It significantly reduces investment risk, broadens accessibility to diverse demographics—from students and busy professionals to retirees—and offers a truly global reach. KGNCLOUD leverages secure, state-of-the-art infrastructure across geographically distributed data centers, ensuring operational resilience and transparent reporting. This robust framework guarantees reliable service and empowers users with real-time insights into their mining performance.

Take the leading platform KGNCLOUD Mining as an example (the first user growth rate in 2025):

Contract type Investment amount Cycle (days) Expected income
    Free experience $100 1 $100+$1

  • MIL-OSI Banking: The WTO welcomes students to 23rd John H. Jackson Moot Court Finals

    Source: World Trade Organization

The John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition is a simulated hearing under the rules of the WTO dispute settlement system involving exchanges of written submissions and adversarial hearings before panelists on international trade law issues. The competition is organized by the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA). The WTO has been a technical supporter of the competition since its inception in 2002.

This year, 65 student teams from 35 WTO members competed in the Regional Rounds, including South and West Asia, East Asia and Oceania, Africa, the Americas (North, South, and the Caribbean), and Europe. Nineteen teams competed in the South and West Asia Round, 12 teams were represented in the East Asia and Oceania Round, 11 teams participated in the African Round, eight teams competed in the All-American Round, and 18 teams took part in the two European Regional Rounds. From these 65 teams, 24 qualified for the Final Oral Round, representing a wide global participation from 15 WTO members: Belgium, Canada, China, Colombia, Germany, India, Kenya, the Netherlands, the Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Chinese Taipei, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

DDG Ellard opened the Final Oral Round and welcomed the students to the WTO on 10 June. In her opening remarks, DDG Ellard emphasized the importance of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition to capacity building by training students in international trade law, legal writing, and oral advocacy skills. DDG Ellard noted that her own experience participating in moot court as a law student showed her “the immense value of the experience you have embarked on in the development of knowledge, skills, and life-long friendships and connections.” DDG Ellard noted that Jackson Moot alumni can be found working in governments, academia, think tanks, law firms, and the WTO Secretariat.

DDG Ellard congratulated Mr Marios Tokas of the Geneva Graduate Institute and Mr Panagiotis Kyriakou of the law firm Archipel, authors of this year’s moot problem. She noted that the topic of the case the students have been debating “demonstrates our challenge in addressing modern day problems — such as digital transfer of data, protection of consumer privacy, and regulation of competition (or anti-trust).” She drew the students’ attention to the ongoing work in the WTO on digital technologies and trade and e-commerce-related issues. “These efforts underscore the vision that even as trade evolves the rules-based approach with the WTO at its centre must continue to be the way forward with the economic rule of law,” she said.

Noting that the international trade community supports the competition, DDG Ellard thanked all the sponsors and WTO staff members who contributed to the organization of the competition and wished teams the best of luck.

The students also had the opportunity to meet DG Okonjo-Iweala on 13 June and heard from her how much the WTO looks forward to welcoming the students each year not only to the competition, but to the community of international trade law.

During this week, teams are competing against each other before panels of WTO law experts. The grand final of the competition will take place on Saturday, 14 June, and will be livestreamed here.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Minister Solomon concludes a successful visit to VivaTech 2025 in Paris

Source: Government of Canada News (2)

Canada’s participation as Country of the Year is a testament to the strength of its AI ecosystem

    June 13, 2025 – Paris, France

Today, the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, concluded a successful visit to Paris, France, where he met with key industry and political leaders to advance Canada’s growth agenda.

Minister Solomon led the Canadian delegation for the opening of the 9th edition of VivaTech. He welcomed President Emmanuel Macron to the Canada Pavilion on the first day of the conference and showcased some of Canada’s leading innovators to the French delegation. At President Macron’s invitation, Minister Solomon later participated in a working dinner with French business leaders at the Élysée Palace.

Minister Solomon participated in Montréal-based company Hypertec’s announcement of a $5 billion initiative to build one of Europe’s largest sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure networks, with over 2 gigawatts of data centre capacity and nearly 100,000 NVIDIA graphics processing units planned in France, Italy, Portugal and the U.K. This initiative demonstrates Canadian leadership on the world stage and will translate to a $250 million investment by the company in Quebec to build next-generation server facilities and create over 100 specialized jobs in AI-related fields.

Over the course of his visit, Minister Solomon held bilateral discussions with Clara Chappaz, Minister Delegate for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies from France; Lex Delles, Minister of the Economy, SME, Energy and Tourism from Luxembourg; and His Excellency Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of the Economy from the United Arab Emirates. Their discussions reflected Canada’s commitment to develop collaborative research and development initiatives, to facilitate and accelerate the commercialization of Canadian products and services, and to build additional compute infrastructure in Canada.

In focused discussions with political and business leaders, including with Jay Puri, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations at NVIDIA, Minister Solomon advanced key Canadian AI and digital priorities, including scaling our companies and ecosystems, unlocking productivity through technology adoption, fueling trust in a digital economy, and pursuing Canadian digital sovereign capabilities.

As the Country of the Year, Canada greatly expanded its footprint at VivaTech with a Canada Pavilion of 500 square metres and a business delegation of over 230 Canadian companies. This showcase highlighted the innovation of Canadian companies and the maturity of Canada’s AI ecosystem and reinforced its reputation as a world leader in AI. The 2025 Canadian presence and business delegation was spearheaded by Scale AI, one of Canada’s global innovation clusters.

The Canada Pavilion offered a nexus for Canadian companies to feature their technology and success and to pursue the trade diversification Canada needs for its products and companies. The world was introduced to Canadian innovators like Airudi, CGI, Cohere, Farpoint Technologies, IVADO Labs, Mappedin, Pontosense, Trusting Pixels, Videns and Vooban.

As AI continues to shape our world in new and unexpected ways, the Government of Canada seeks to harness AI’s opportunities, mitigate its risks and foster trust. With strategic government investments and support for responsible AI adoption, Canada will grow its AI ecosystem and enhance productivity across the country.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Government must retain and retrain Alexander Dennis workers

    Source: Scottish Greens

    13 Jun 2025 Economy Transport

The workers whose jobs are at risk must be protected by our governments

    More in Economy

The Scottish and UK governments must take immediate actions to retain the highly skilled workforce from Alexander Dennis if their factories in Falkirk and Lambert close, the Scottish Greens have said.

Writing to the Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes, Mark Ruskell MSP said that the closure put 400 direct jobs at risk, and up to 1,600 more indirectly in the wider Falkirk and Grangemouth area.

Speaking after sending the letter, Mr Ruskell said:

“The factories in Falkirk and Lambert are putting electric buses on roads across Europe. Their closure would be a devastating blow to local communities at a time when our green economy should be booming.

“Manufacturing could continue here profitably for years to come, and the Government must leave no stone unturned to keep them working. But if their owners are determined to move, then Ministers need to recognise the importance that retaining a skilled workforce has for Scotland’s future.

“We recognised this at Grangemouth, and when the refinery closed Forth Valley College received funding to offer support and training. This helped keep these essential skills in our communities and economy.

“The First Minister has said he’ll do “everything he can” to support the workers. But we must now see those words transform into action with a proper plan, community and trade union involvement, and significant investment. To do anything else would be a betrayal of Scotland’s future.”

Text of letter sent to DFM Kate Forbes by Mark Ruskell

    Dear Deputy First Minister,

I write to you following the news that bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis, which has
factories in Falkirk and Larbert, announced that it was considering moving
manufacturing to a site in Scarborough.

This decision is a further devastating blow to hundreds of workers and to a community
that already feels like it has been abandoned following job losses at the nearby INEOS
    site in Grangemouth.

From conversations with Unite the Union representatives there is understandable worry
around the uncertainty and many of their members want answers and action from their
    elected representatives.

The workers from ALD, similarly to those from Grangemouth, could have a crucial role to
play in our green future. But warm words alone about a just transition won’t pay the
bills, it needs investment, and it needs a proper plan. To achieve our climate targets, we
must retain the workers, and urgently upscale their knowledge and skills needed to
    deliver them.

I believe that there is life in the current Falkirk and Larbert sites, and that manufacturing
in Scotland can continue for many years to come. However, if the Canadian owned firm
have their sights set on England, then I would hope that the Scottish and UK
Governments would support workers at risk of redundancy with skills and training.

These workers are highly skilled and have an important contribution to make locally and
    nationally.

Forth Valley College has received funding from the Scottish and UK Governments to
support the Grangemouth workers and this should be no different for those employed
by Alexander Dennis. For every job in bus manufacturing, it is estimated that there is a
multiplier of three to four jobs in the wider supply chain and support services. The
closure announcement on this basis put up to 1,600 jobs at risk in the wider Falkirk and
    Grangemouth area.

I hope that Ministers will work with the trade unions to retain jobs and skills in the
community and to ensure that it is workers and local people who are leading the
    process.

Could I ask when the Government is planning to meet with workers and trade unions? It
would be beneficial to get all parties round the table, including the current employers,
    to explore the next steps.

    Kind regards,

    Mark Ruskell MSP
MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Government of Canada attends the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3)

Source: Government of Canada News (2)

    June 13, 2025

Nice, France – Canada’s oceans are facing increasing impacts from climate change, including species decline, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, harm from aquatic invasive species, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and the effects from waste and other pollutants. In response to these challenges, Canada is collaborating internationally with maritime nations across the globe to better protect our oceans for present and future generations.

From June 9-13, Fisheries and Oceans Canada led the Canadian delegation at the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), which took place in Nice, France. During the Conference, Canada led on a series of events including:

    • An Ocean Action Panel co-chaired with Palau, leading thoughtful discussions on advancing sustainable ocean governance, conservation and responsible use of marine resources for our shared global oceans.
    • An Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing Action Alliance (IUU-AA) event to reinforce the importance of transparency while improving efforts to govern, enforce and work with international partners to combat IUU fishing. As the current chair of the IUU Fishing Action Alliance, Canada recognizes the challenges of IUU fishing and its devastating impacts on fish stocks, ecosystems and economies around the world.
    • The launch of a High Ambition Coalition for a Quiet Ocean, co-led alongside Panama, which was endorsed by 35 other countries. This Coalition marks a significant global commitment to reduce ocean noise, a key threat to ecosystem health and marine biodiversity around the world.

Canada also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Kingdom to strengthen our long history of cooperation on the sustainable use of marine resources, ocean protection and preservation, and ocean science.

By continuing to collaborate with international partners to better understand the environmental changes we are seeing in the global ocean and create more economic opportunities for coastal and inland communities, Canada can help contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous blue economy for all.
