  • MIL-OSI NGOs: BRICS: Greenpeace calls for strong global leadership in pushing climate action and nature protection

    Source: Greenpeace Statement –

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Leaders at the BRICS Summit have a responsibility to reinforce multilateralism and deliver an urgent signal they are prepared to act on the global challenges of climate change and nature protection.

Less than two weeks after the Bonn Climate Change Conference was marred by a lack of urgency and as G7 leaders tiptoed around the need for climate action, BRICS leaders have an obligation to move ahead with urgent climate action on the road to COP30 in Brazil – including accelerating the COP28 decision to transition away from fossil fuels to align their climate action plans with the 1.5°C goal.

Anna Carcamo, Climate Politics Specialist, Greenpeace Brazil said: “All eyes are on Brazil this year as the BRICS and COP30 host. This is a seismic opportunity to drive bold, collaborative Global South leadership. BRICS nations, several of which are among the most climate vulnerable, must seize this moment and take a decisive stand for people and the planet.

“The BRICs can lead climate action with strong 2035 climate action plans and Brazil has a responsibility to steer them to higher ambition, ensuring an accelerated transition away from fossil fuels and pushing forward to end deforestation through a transformative forest outcome at COP30 in the Amazon.”

Yao Zhe, Global Policy Adviser, Greenpeace East Asia said: “The BRICS agenda has always placed global development at its core. However, amid major economic and geopolitical challenges, ecological degradation is threatening the foundations of future prosperity and undermining development potential.

“It is crucial therefore that the BRICS evolves into a positive force for strengthening global environmental and climate governance by offering joint leadership and innovative solutions. As a founding member of BRICS, China plays a particularly important role in this endeavour.”

Koaile Monaheng, Pan African Political Strategist, Greenpeace Africa said: “In a year as the G20 host, South Africa also needs to live up to its global responsibilities and a good place to start is ratifying the global oceans treaty and pushing other BRICS members to do the same. But responsible leadership also starts at home and South Africa must push ahead with an ambitious 2035 climate action plan to set the scene for climate finance talks at COP30.”

Rayhan Dudayev, Forest Solution Political Lead, Greenpeace Southeast Asia said: “The world is watching for Global South leadership that strengthens multilateralism, centres climate justice and puts community-based solutions at the heart of climate action and finance. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities protect over one-third of the world’s forests, but receive only 1 % of global climate finance. The Brazilian-led Tropical Forests Forever Facility is an opportunity to strengthen forest protection and halt deforestation if it ensures robust monitoring and full participation of frontline communities.”

Abigail Aguilar, Global Plastics Campaign Manager, Greenpeace USA said: “A strong Global Plastics Treaty that cuts plastic production and provides a pathway for sustainable development in the Global South could provide a defining signal that BRICS nations are listening to the most affected in the developing countries and are ready to step up where others have faltered.

“With the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations on the horizon in Geneva, BRICS nations must commit to an ambitious agreement that will cut plastic production, secure finance and technology needed for a just transition and protect our people, climate and the planet.”

Mariana Andrade, Ocean Campaigner, Greenpeace Brazil said: “The High Seas Treaty’s ratification is within touching distance and Global South leadership has helped drive forward this crucial agreement. But ahead of the next International Seabed Authority meeting, we are watching whether that leadership extends to defending the ocean from unilateral deep sea mining.

“Reckless exploitation of the deep sea would betray the principles of multilateralism that BRICS countries must champion. This is a moment where they must commit to international law, science-based decision-making and the common heritage of humankind.”

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Bishkek, July 4 /Xinhua/ — “The spirit of China – Central Asia” has its roots in the distant past and corresponds to the trend of the current reality. This is stated in the author’s article by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Kyrgyzstan Liu Jiangping, published recently in the newspaper “Slovo Kyrgyzstana”.

In June, the second China-Central Asia summit was held in Astana, Kazakhstan. In her article entitled “Promoting the China-Central Asia Spirit, Building a Common Home of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, Development and Prosperity,” Liu Jiangping recalled that the summit was held in a Central Asian country for the first time, which is of great importance for the further development of the China-Central Asia format.

“Following the summit, the heads of six states signed the Astana Declaration, which recorded the ‘Spirit of China – Central Asia’. More than one hundred agreements were reached, which gave a powerful impetus to the creation of a closer community of shared destiny between China and Central Asia,” she noted.

“The China-Central Asia Spirit” is characterized by mutual respect, mutual trust, mutual benefit, mutual assistance and the promotion of joint modernization through high-quality development. “The highlight of the summit is the confirmation of the “China-Central Asia Spirit”, which has its roots in the distant past and is in line with the trend of the current reality,” the diplomat said in her article.

She stressed that more than two thousand years ago, the envoy of the Han Dynasty Zhang Qian went to the Western Region, laid the foundation for friendly relations between China and Central Asia. For more than 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and the Central Asian countries have maintained solidarity and mutual trust, firmly supporting each other in protecting independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and national dignity.

“This spirit demonstrates the unanimity of the six countries in pursuing unity and common development, which serves as a guiding principle for maintaining the centuries-old friendship and cooperation between our countries,” Liu Jiangping said.

The most important outcome of the summit was the signing of the Treaty on Eternal Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation. “For the first time in the history of Chinese diplomacy, the principle of eternal friendship with an entire adjacent region was enshrined in a treaty,” she noted, emphasizing that China and the Central Asian countries are good neighbors, good friends, reliable partners and brothers. China always considers Central Asia as one of its foreign policy priorities and develops relations with Central Asian partners on the principles of equality and sincerity.

The diplomat named the announcement of 2025-2026 as the Years of High-Quality Development of China-Central Asia Cooperation as the most pressing topic of the summit. In recent years, China-Central Asia cooperation has demonstrated high results. China is the most important trading partner and investor in the Central Asian countries.

In the more than two years since the Xi’an summit, cooperation between China and Central Asian countries within the Belt and Road Initiative has continued to deepen. Construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway has begun, and cooperation on the China-Europe express railway and the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor is advancing at an accelerated pace, the ambassador said, adding that trade turnover between China and Central Asian countries in 2024 reached a record high of $94.8 billion, an increase of 35 percent.

The Ambassador also noted that China is ready to develop high-quality cooperation with the Central Asian countries in such areas as uninterrupted trade, industry and investment, transport connectivity, green subsoil use, modern agriculture and mutual travel of citizens.

Touching upon Chinese-Kyrgyz cooperation, Liu Jiangping noted that it is an important component of the entire complex of interactions between China and the Central Asian countries. Today, Chinese-Kyrgyz relations have entered a golden period of their development and have significant potential for further deepening. The meeting of the leaders of the two countries on the sidelines of the summit outlined a new plan for the development of Chinese-Kyrgyz relations.

China expressed its readiness to work together with the Central Asian countries, including Kyrgyzstan, to implement the agreements reached by the heads of state. Particular emphasis was placed on the need to promote the “China-Central Asia Spirit”, intensify cooperation through a more pragmatic approach and specific measures, as well as promote high-quality construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative in order to achieve new results in creating a community of shared destiny for China and Central Asia, the ambassador concluded. –0–

The project was connected to the grid for electricity generation recently. Located in the Xihai’an (West Coast) New Area of the east China’s coastal city, the project innovatively adopts a floating structure, with the photovoltaic panels rising and falling close to the water surface with the tide, and uses seawater to efficiently dissipate heat to improve power generation efficiency. With an installed capacity of 7.5 megawatts, it is expected to generate nearly 10 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 8,300 tons. Since it was put into use on July 1, the project has generated a total of 123,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity. [Photo/Xinhua]

  • MIL-OSI Africa: The Gambia: As malaria season begins, a life-saving infusion of medicine

    Source: APO

    .

On a hot and humid Thursday afternoon, the courtyard of The Gambia’s Central Medical Store swarms with people. Despite the oppressive heat, dozens of people gather under a large tent.

From time to time, clouds appear before dissipating, while the small puddles left by a light rainfall the day before remind everyone of the onset of the rainy season, a period known to bring a surge in malaria cases.

Against this backdrop, the Gambian Red Cross Society (GRCS) officially handed over a vital consignment of anti-malarial medications to the Ministry of Health in support of the upcoming Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) campaign.

This life-saving donation is part of the “Accelerating Malaria Elimination in The Gambia” project, funded by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

This delivery comes at the right time,” said Lamine Dampha, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health during the handover ceremony. “The rainy season, commonly referred to as ‘malaria season’, has just begun. These medications will allow us to protect tens of thousands of people, especially children under five, who continue to bear the highest burden of malaria, across the country”.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Charles Businge, the IFRC’s regional director for Africa emphasized that these medications come at a crucial time when global funding for malaria is declining.

In this context, Ibou Fye Njie, secretary general of the GRCS, says these medicines take on even greater significance.

Delivery of these medicines marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to achieve a malaria-free Gambia, while emphasizing that the project will finance the operational costs for the implementation of four SMC cycles during the 2025 malaria season in Kombo North District,” he said.

Supporting a nationwide mosquito nets distribution campaign

Valued at over USD 108,000 (excluding transport costs estimated at USD 35,000), the medications handover follows a large-scale mosquito net distribution campaign, conducted in partnership with the Senegalese authorities as part of a coordinated cross-border malaria control effort.

More than 1.5 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets were distributed free of charge to households across The Gambia.

Supporting this nationwide effort, 280 Red Cross volunteers were mobilized across all regions to raise awareness about malaria prevention. They went door-to-door educating families about the proper use of mosquito nets, provided information on where to collect them, and assisted Ministry of Health staff with registering beneficiaries.

I’m very grateful to have received a mosquito net,” said a mother of three from the Central River Region. “This year, I know my children and I will be protected from malaria.”

Malaria: a major public health threat

Malaria is one of the top ten causes of death in The Gambia, with the entire population of the country at risk of the disease. It also remains a leading cause of childhood mortality and morbidity in The Gambia, where under-five mortality rate remains high at 56 per 1,000 live births.

Despite significant progress in recent years, global malaria funding is insufficient to sustain essential services for a growing population and addressing biological and non-biological threats.

Speaking on behalf of His Excellency Liu Jin, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to The Gambia, Mr. Zhan Tong, Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, reaffirmed China’s commitment:

We are confident that, with the strong support of the Chinese government and the international community, we will see tangible progress very soon,” he said.

The “Accelerating Malaria Elimination in The Gambia” project, launched in September 2024, will run through September 2026, with a total budget of USD 1,978,879.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: China and Germany should advocate multilateralism and free trade: Wang Yi

BERLIN, July 4 (Xinhua) — China and Germany should work together to advance multilateralism, safeguard free trade and promote open development, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said at a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul here on Thursday.

Wang Yi praised the 8th round of China-Germany Strategic Dialogue on Diplomacy and Security held on Thursday, calling it comprehensive, pragmatic, frank and constructive.

According to him, the talks contributed to strengthening mutual understanding and expanding common ground between the two sides.

Wang Yi noted that the parties agreed to advance a comprehensive strategic partnership guided by the principles of mutual respect, finding common ground while maintaining differences, and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Recalling that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Wang Yi said unilateralism, protectionism and power politics pose serious challenges to the international community.

The Chinese Foreign Minister noted that under such circumstances, major countries should shoulder their responsibilities, embrace the global trend of multipolarity and economic globalization, and firmly stand on the right side of history.

China and Germany should strengthen exchanges, deepen cooperation, and jointly accomplish the following three tasks, he said.

First, strengthen the foundation of bilateral relations. Wang Yi referred to the phone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in late May, during which they gave strategic guidance on developing bilateral ties and outlined the direction of future efforts. The two sides should implement the important consensus reached by the two leaders and prepare for the next round of high-level meetings, he added.

“China appreciates the German government’s reaffirmation of its commitment to the one-China policy and believes that Germany will support its efforts to achieve complete national reunification, just as China has unconditionally supported the reunification of Germany,” the Chinese foreign minister said, noting that achieving peace in the Taiwan Strait requires resolute opposition to any moves toward “Taiwan independence.”

Secondly, to improve the quality of bilateral cooperation. As Wang Yi emphasized, strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation is a necessity for both countries, as well as a “ballast” for bilateral relations. According to him, the parties agreed to create a more stable, predictable and reliable political basis for advancing practical cooperation.

“China and Germany have broad prospects for cooperation in cutting-edge areas such as green transition, artificial intelligence and quantum technology,” Wang Yi said. Only by strengthening ties of mutual interest and pursuing a common future can the two countries effectively address external risks and challenges, the Chinese Foreign Minister stressed.

Third, adherence to the principles of multilateralism. History has repeatedly proven that open exchanges have always been the right direction for the development and progress of mankind, Wang Yi noted. In the 21st century, there is no need to erect new barriers by introducing tariffs or provoke ideological confrontation, the diplomat warned.

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU. China looks forward to hosting important events including the China-EU summit,” Wang said, expressing hope that Germany will play an active role in the EU, promote coordination and cooperation between China and the EU, and make new contributions to global governance together with China.

Wang Yi stressed that China is willing to work with Germany to uphold the correct view of history, remain true to the original aspiration of establishing diplomatic relations, strengthen strategic ties, seek common ground while maintaining differences, and deepen practical cooperation. –0–

PYONGYANG, July 4 (Xinhua) — The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has condemned the “unilateral coercive act” of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) comprising the United States, Japan, India and Australia, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Friday.

“We will never tolerate the US and its vassal forces’ attempt to unilaterally change the status of the DPRK and the current situation on the Korean Peninsula,” KCNA reported, citing a press release issued by the DPRK Foreign Ministry the day before.

“Nothing can change the DPRK’s nuclear status… The US attempt to deny the DPRK’s current status is not only a serious violation of sovereignty, but also a dangerous act of escalation that creates instability in the region and exacerbates the situation,” the statement said.

The US hegemonic actions are the main risk factor hindering peace and security in the region and the world, the statement added.

It is noted that within the framework of its sovereignty, the DPRK is taking appropriate and reciprocal countermeasures of a self-defense nature against such provocative military actions, since the United States is taking steps to strengthen the multilateral military alliance that threatens the security of the region and is conducting joint military exercises that are aggressive in nature.

On Tuesday, QUAD foreign ministers met in Washington, D.C., issuing a joint statement reaffirming the alliance’s commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. –0–

BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) — Dialogue and cooperation are the right path, a Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson said Friday, commenting on the US lifting some trade and economic restrictions on China.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson made the comments at the request of journalists on recent reports that relevant Chinese enterprises have received notifications from the US Department of Commerce to resume exports to China of products such as electronic design automation software, ethane and aircraft engines.

The department’s representative said that following the Chinese-American trade and economic talks in London, the parties recently confirmed specific details of the implementation of the important agreements reached by the heads of the two states during their telephone conversation on June 5, as well as details of securing the results of the trade and economic talks in Geneva.

As part of this process, China is considering export license applications for relevant controlled goods in accordance with laws and regulations, while the United States has taken corresponding steps by lifting a series of restrictive measures against China, which has already been informed to the Chinese side.

Describing the framework reached during the trade and economic talks in London as “hard-won”, the official stressed that dialogue and cooperation were the right way forward, while threats and coercion “lead nowhere”.

The Commerce Ministry representative called on the US to deeply understand the mutually beneficial nature of China-US economic and trade relations, continue to work with China to meet each other halfway, correct mistakes, and take practical actions to protect and implement the important consensus reached during the telephone conversation between the leaders of the two countries, so as to jointly promote the sustainable and long-term development of bilateral economic and trade relations. -0-
