    BEIJING, July 3 — China will open a themed exhibition on July 7 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

    Held at the Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in Beijing, the exhibition will feature 1,525 photographs and 3,237 artifacts, said Luo Cunkang, curator of the museum, at a State Council Information Office press conference Thursday.

    It will become part of the museum’s permanent display.

    Divided into eight sections, the exhibition employs a range of modern display techniques to bring history to life, combining rare artifacts, archival documents, historical footage, artworks, and immersive recreations of key moments.

    June was hotter and drier than usual in Hong Kong, mainly attributed to the stronger subtropical ridge covering southeastern China, the Hong Kong Observatory said today.

    The monthly mean minimum temperature of 27.1 degrees Celsius was 0.6 degrees above the norm and the fifth highest on record for June.

    The monthly mean maximum temperature of 31.5 degrees Celsius and the monthly mean temperature of 28.9 degrees Celsius were 0.8 and 0.6 degrees above their corresponding norms, and both were among the seventh on record for the month.

    The total rainfall in the month was 237.3mm, which was about 48% of the norm. With all six months drier than usual, the accumulated rainfall in the first half this year was only 444.4mm, about 41% of the norm and the fifth lowest on record for the same period.

    It was extremely hot on June 10 with the maximum temperature soaring to 35.6 degrees Celsius, levelling the record maximum for June since records began in 1884.

    Three tropical cyclones occurred over the South China Sea and the western North Pacific in June, the observatory added.

  • MIL-OSI China: A robot revolution in building the largest railway station in west China

    As the new section of the Chongqing-Xiamen high-speed railway, from Chongqing to Qianjiang, officially opened a week ago, the key hub along this route, Chongqing East Railway Station, was also put into operation.

    From obtaining the design blueprints in May 2022 to its official inauguration, it has taken 38 months to complete what is now the largest high-speed rail station in west China. Behind this monumental construction project are a group of unsung heroes — robots.

    According to Sun Haoran, a manager of the railway station project under China Railway Construction Engineering Group, the station serves as a pilot for the “integration of stations and cities” as part of the nation’s efforts to strengthen transportation infrastructure.

    Located in the Nan’an District of Chongqing, the station features 15 platforms and 29 tracks. The station building spans eight floors with a total construction area of 1.22 million square meters, equivalent to 170 standard football fields. Its roof covers approximately 120,000 square meters and weighs 16,500 tonnes.

    “The scale of the station’s roof alone is colossal, making the construction difficult and posing high safety risks,” Sun said.

    Indeed, in this city where temperatures regularly hit 40 degrees Celsius during furnace-like summers, building a vast transportation hub on its rugged topography demands innovation.

    Robots have conducted a quiet revolution, transforming conventional construction in extreme environments.

    “Ground leveling in 40-degree heat used to mean workers often collapsing from heatstroke,” said Huang Pinqing, a senior official with China Railway 11th Bureau Group Corporation Limited, who is in charge of the railway station project.

    “Now, laser-guided bots did the job with millimeter precision at three times human speed, cutting labour costs by 40 percent.”

    “Meanwhile, in this mountain furnace in summer, steel never sweats,” he added.

    Huang proudly introduced his “robot army.”

    Four-wheel laser screed machines, equipped with LiDAR sensors, AI algorithms, and 5G connectivity, replaced manual concrete smoothing. While workers remotely monitor them from shaded shelters, their precision reduces waste.

    Patrol robots, undeterred by night or rain, became 24/7 sentinels. Using AI vision, they detect the absence of hard hats or misplaced vehicles within 100 meters during the day or 50 meters at night, slashing hazard identification time by 90 percent and quadrupling the quality inspection efficiency, he said.

    Glass installation robots tackle 800-kilogram panels needed for soaring facades. Precision servo arms position the massive glass units with millimeter accuracy, accelerating installation threefold while reducing accident risks by 90 percent compared to manual hoisting by dozens of workers.

    Omni-directional welding robots were used for joining overhead pipe installations. Capable of 0.1-millimeter accuracy swing control, they sealed an 800-millimeter diameter steel pipe joint in two hours — one-third the time required manually — ensuring consistent quality on high-altitude tasks.

    “Robots free our teams from the worst heat exposure,” Huang said. “They aren’t gimmicks but essential partners.”

    Data from China Railway 11th Bureau Group Corporation Limited confirmed that robotics tripled average work efficiency and nearly halved labour costs.

    In addition, safety incidents dropped by 90 percent, despite Chongqing’s challenging topography, where summer heatwaves now regularly test construction limits, including record-breaking temperatures in 2022 and 2024, forcing traditional sites to suspend daytime work.

    “This is how technology serves people — building faster, safer, and smarter, even in Chongqing’s furnace,” said Huang.

    This mountainous metropolis is also accelerating the power of automation to reshape infrastructure development and beyond.

    According to the Chongqing Municipal Economy and Information Technology Commission, in recent years, Chongqing has drafted action plans to boost robot application and cultivate future industries, empowering the development of the robotics industry from a top-level institutional perspective.

    By 2024, the city’s robotics output exceeded 60,000 units, with the total industrial chain output value surpassing 37 billion yuan (about 5.17 billion U.S. dollars).

    Meanwhile, the city is creating an internationally competitive intelligent equipment industrial cluster.

    Currently, Chongqing has gathered over 300 key robotics enterprises, and hosts 31 research and development platforms, such as the Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a national robotics testing center.

    Those eager to catch a glimpse of next year’s FIFA World Cup magic a little early may want to head to eastern China’s Jiangsu Province, where an amateur football league is offering an unlikely but extraordinary alternative.

    With a cheeky nod to both the English Premier League and the Chinese Super League, the Su Super League, or the Jiangsu Football City League, features a seven-month, 85-match grassroots showdown between 13 cities, packed with local pride, derby drama and an atmosphere that is nothing short of electric.

    The league has taken China by storm, even eclipsing the domestic buzz surrounding the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. On June 29, 43,617 fans packed into the stands to watch Suzhou take on Yangzhou, a crowd even larger than the average attendance of Italy’s Serie A last year.

    And that might just be the warm-up. The upcoming July 5 clash between Suzhou and Nanjing, moved to a stadium with over 60,000 seats, is expected to set a new attendance record. Ticket demand has been so wild that hundreds of thousands have scrambled online just for a shot at entry.

    Since its May 10 kick-off, the league had racked up a jaw-dropping 11 billion views on Chinese short video platforms by June 21, according to Jiangsu’s statistical authorities. That’s not a typo – billion with a “B.”

    Despite China’s struggles on the international football stage, the passion for the sport runs deep at home. And the Su Super League is a living proof. Unlike its professional counterparts, the league’s players come from everyday backgrounds like students, office workers and repairmen.

    But they deliver no fewer spectacles on the pitch. In that June 29 match, Suzhou scored just one minute and 18 seconds into the game, setting a league record for the fastest goal. The scorer was a 17-year-old high schooler who netted twice more in the second half, leading his team to victory.

    Even in defeat, the league finds its heroes. Changzhou, a team yet to register a win in five games, has become a fan favorite for their fight, grit and refusal to give in. Fans flood social media with affectionate memes, and the team’s underdog charm has sparked a local tourism and spending boom.

    “We never used to watch football,” said Xu Huaiyu, a housewife from Changzhou. “Now our whole family gathers for every match and cheers for our home team!”

    On weekends, the league streams across more than 20 platforms. According to Jiangsu TV, the past weekend’s locally televised broadcasts alone pulled in a combined audience of 83.7 million viewers.

    The fever is just as real offline. Bars, plazas and even cinemas across Jiangsu have seen surging crowds for public viewings – scenes typically reserved for the World Cup.

    In Nantong, 34 viewing spots in parks and commercial districts have become makeshift stadiums, filled with chants and applause. In Wuxi, outdoor screens and football-themed night markets serve up beer, barbecue and 90 minutes of grassroots glory under the stars.

    “The phenomenon reflects people’s rising enthusiasm for diverse, mass-participation sports events,” said Li Chao, a spokesperson of China’s National Development and Reform Commission. “It also reveals the immense potential for growth in China’s sports, cultural and tourism industries.”

    Suzhou has gone all in. More than 100 local restaurants, malls and scenic spots are offering discounts to traveling fans. Match ticket holders and visitors from opposing cities can enjoy free entry to over 40 attractions across the city.

    In Nantong, the economic impact is already measurable. On a recent home game Sunday, the city welcomed over 730,000 visitors and generated 420 million yuan (around 58 million U.S. dollars) in tourism revenue, a 44.5 percent and 52.3 percent jump year-over-year, respectively.

    A Jiangsu statistical department’s recent survey of over 3,000 local residents found that nearly 59 percent plan to increase household spending on sports this year – be it gear, training or participation – thanks to the league’s influence.

    “The Su Super League has broken through the walls of traditional competitive sports,” said Ding Xiang, associate professor at Nanjing University. “It’s creating a culture where everyone can talk football, watch football and be part of the experience,” he said. “It’s much like the World Cup at street level, with a ripple effect on diverse consumer behavior.”

    Multiple Jiangsu cities have already moved to capitalize, listing the league as a strategic economic priority for the second half of 2025. At a recent provincial briefing, Jiangsu Governor Xu Kunlin urged officials to “fully leverage the league to drive integration of culture, tourism, sports and commerce, and spark a consumption-led economy.”

    Beyond economic gains, the league is casting new light on youth development. Powerhouse teams like Nantong, who have netted 12 goals in four matches, are largely made up of players from local youth academies. The city has already made football part of high school entrance assessments and boasts over 240 national-level school football programs.

    “However, against the backdrop of growing consumption, all types of generation, including nuclear, are experiencing a rebirth. This is clearly illustrated by the price of uranium fuel, which has more than tripled over the past seven years,” Igor Sechin noted.

    He recalled that back in the 1930s the idea of thermonuclear fusion was formulated, and many famous scientists, including Nobel laureates Hans Bethe, Peter Kapitsa, Igor Tamm and later Andrei Sakharov, sought to reproduce and control this process. In theory, fusion can generate almost four million times more energy than burning oil or coal, Igor Sechin said. However, in order to sustain a fusion reaction and sustainably generate energy, it is still necessary to improve methods of plasma confinement, ensure its stability, and increase efficiency.

    The CEO of Rosneft noted that a few years ago the nuclear power industry was in a deep crisis due to the decline in activity in the industry and such large companies as Westinghouse and Areva had to go through restructuring and ownership changes.     At the same time, Sechin said it is important that China relies on the latest technological achievements of the leading nuclear powers – Russia, the United States and France – to develop its nuclear industry.

    He noted that Russia has many years of experience in building nuclear power plants. The cost of the most modern Russian VVER-1200 reactor is much lower than the American AP-1000. Today such reactors are already operating in Russia and are planned to be commissioned in friendly countries.

    At the same time, Sechin noted, the resource base is of particular importance. Today, just seven countries, including the Russian Federation, control more than 90% of the world’s uranium fuel production and about 70% of the world’s uranium reserves.

    “Today, Russia is the only country in the world that has expertise in the entire technological chain of the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining to nuclear fuel disposal. In total, 80 nuclear reactors have been built in the world using Russian technologies,” he said

    Russia has also commissioned the world’s only floating nuclear power plant of small capacity. Currently, four more nuclear power plants are under construction.

    Also, a sodium-cooled nuclear reactor belonging to the category of fast neutron reactors, the BN-800, has been successfully operating in our country for ten years, another latest-generation fast neutron reactor, the BN-1200, is under construction.

    “Reactors of this type take into account the most advanced technical solutions, including the enlargement of fuel elements, the use of uranium-plutonium mixed fuel, as well as well as new structural steels with increased radiation resistance, which provide deeper fuel burnup and higher efficiency.  In particular, the efficiency of electricity generation increases by 20-25%, even without taking into account the significantly higher efficiency of fuel use,” said the CEO of Rosneft

    Investments in the nuclear sector are expected to continue growing According to the IEA forecast, by 2050 the global installed nuclear generation capacity will grow by nearly 60% to reach 650 GW. “I believe this estimate is understated. Just a few weeks ago, the US President set a goal to quadruple the country’s nuclear generation capacity to 400 GW,” Sechin noted.

    The CEO of Rosneft expects further growth of investments in the nuclear sector: new technologies, such as small modular reactors, are now attracting increased attention of investors. While such reactors are more mobile, their implementation also requires investments in the development of power grids. In addition, special attention should be paid to their safety and security against terrorist threats.

    “Rolls-Royce recently won a tender for the construction of such reactors in the UK. Experts note that these reactors have a number of features. One of them is described in Ecclesiastes: “What is crooked cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted.” None of these reactors have been put into operation yet,” Sechin explained.

    The proposed smaller reactors will require no less effort and cost, including those related to fuel utilization and safety, than existing larger reactors.

    “Finally, nuclear energy is, in any case, a dual-use technology. The issue of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons must be given the utmost attention, as it is precisely because of this that the Middle East conflict is currently intensifying. It is crucial to consider whether we want further expansion of the nuclear club,” Igor Sechin concluded.

    The platform, developed by the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, the People’s Bank of China Shanghai Head Office, along with other city departments, integrates consumption services and tourism information onto Alipay’s international version, eliminating the need for multiple app downloads and addressing previous language barriers.

    Foreign users can register with one click to access 30 mini-programs across the four key areas of dining, transport, sightseeing and shopping. Core functions include food delivery, restaurant recommendations, public transit, ride-hailing, travel advice, ticket booking, luggage storage and tax refund service locations. The service operates primarily in English and offers real-time multilingual translation.

    Easy Go also features a “tap for tax refund” function that links to a tax refund map of the city, and provides updated city guides and travel tips. Media and influencer videos promoting Shanghai and China are available on the platform too.

    “Easy Go is a very convenient platform because it’s just all in one,” said Clarisse Le Guernic, who comes from France. “Foreign tourists coming to Shanghai, they don’t need to download many different apps, and they can do payment, translation, order food, take shared bikes just with Easy Go.”

    As of June, citizens from 55 countries can utilize China’s 240-hour visa-free transit program. The country has also expanded its unilateral visa-free access program, allowing travelers from 47 countries to stay for up to 30 days.

    The weather of June 2025 was hotter and drier than usual in Hong Kong, mainly attributed to the stronger subtropical ridge covering southeastern China. The monthly mean minimum temperature of 27.1 degrees was 0.6 degrees above the normal and one of the fifth highest on record for June. The monthly mean maximum temperature of 31.5 degrees and the monthly mean temperature of 28.9 degrees were 0.8 degrees and 0.6 degrees above their corresponding normals and both were among the seventh on record for June. The total rainfall in the month was 237.3 millimetres, about 48 per cent of the normal of 491.5 millimetres. With all six months drier than usual, the accumulated rainfall recorded in the first half of the year was only 444.4 millimetres, about 41 per cent of the normal of 1 082.5 millimetres for the same period and the fifth lowest on record for the same period.

    With the easterly airstream prevailing over the coast of Guangdong replaced by a southerly airstream, it was hot with sunny periods and there were one or two showers in Hong Kong on the first two days of the month. When a trough of low pressure moved across the coast of Guangdong on June 3, the local weather turned mainly cloudy with a few showers. An upper-air disturbance and a surface trough of low pressure brought showers to the northern part of the South China Sea and its coastal areas the next day. Locally, it was cloudy with showers. There were thunderstorms in the afternoon. More than 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over Lantau Island and the western part of the New Territories. While it was still mainly cloudy with one or two showers on June 5, it became hot with sunny periods the next day, as the anticyclone aloft covering the coast of southeastern China strengthened gradually. Under the dominance of the anticyclone aloft, the local weather was generally fine with prolonged heat from June 7 to 10. It was extremely hot on June 10 with the maximum temperature at the Observatory soaring to 35.6 degrees, levelling the record maximum for June since records began in 1884. The maximum temperature at Lau Fau Shan even reached 38.9 degrees, the highest record so far since the setup of the station in 1985.

    Wutip formed as a tropical depression over the central part of the South China Sea on the night of June 10. It tracked generally west-northwestward towards Hainan Island and intensified gradually. Its outer rainbands occasionally brought squally showers to the northern part of the South China Sea and the coast of Guangdong. The Observatory issued the first tropical cyclone warning signal of the year on June 11. Locally, the weather deteriorated gradually with a few squally showers that day. While there were sunny intervals during the day, there were also isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Wutip further intensified into a severe tropical storm on June 12 and gradually turned to a north-northeasterly track over Beibu Wan, skirting the western coast of Hainan Island and Leizhou Peninsula in the following two days. Under the influence of Wutip’s outer rainbands, there were squally showers locally from June 12 to 14, with thunderstorms on June 12 and 13. The showers were heavy with more than 30 millimetres of rainfall recorded over most parts of the territory on June 13. The strong winds associated with Wutip affected the Pearl River Estuary and its vicinity on June 15. Local winds were generally strong, occasionally reaching gale force on high ground. Winds moderated progressively later in the afternoon. While moving northeastwards further into inland areas, Wutip weakened gradually and finally degenerated into an area of low pressure on the evening of June 15. Locally, there were still a few squally showers that day.

         Under the influence of an active southwesterly airstream, showers and thunderstorms affected Hong Kong on June 16 and 17. The showers were heavy with squally thunderstorms on June 17. More than 30 millimetres of rainfall were generally recorded over the territory, and rainfall even exceeded 70 millimetres in the northern part of the New Territories, Tsuen Wan and Sai Kung Districts. With a southerly airstream affecting the coast of Guangdong, it was hot with sunny intervals in the following five days. Meanwhile, there were also occasional showers, with isolated thunderstorms on June 19 and 20. More than 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over the eastern part of the New Territories on June 20, and the eastern parts of Hong Kong Island and the New Territories on June 21. While the southerly airstream continued to bring showers and isolated thunderstorms at first on June 23, with an anticyclone aloft covering southern China, the weather became generally fine and very hot that afternoon, and remained so in the following two days. Furthermore, an area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea intensified into a tropical depression on June 25 and moved northwestward towards the eastern part of Hainan Island and Leizhou Peninsula. Its outer rainbands brought heavy showers and squally thunderstorms to Hong Kong the next day. Around 30 millimetres of rainfall were generally recorded over the territory, and rainfall even exceeded 50 millimetres over Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. A broad trough of low pressure and an upper-air disturbance affected the coast of Guangdong and brought showers and thunderstorms over the territory on June 27 and 28. The showers were heavy in the small hours of June 28, around 30 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places, and rainfall even exceeded 50 millimetres over Tai Po. With the broad trough of low pressure lingering over the coast of Guangdong, the weather remained mainly cloudy with occasionally heavy showers and thunderstorms on the last two days of the month. Around 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over Kowloon East and Sha Tin on June 29. More than 30 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over most parts of the territory, and rainfall even exceeded 50 millimetres in Kowloon East and the eastern part of the New Territories on June 30.

    Three tropical cyclones occurred over the South China Sea and the western North Pacific in June 2025.

    A decision by Washington to halt some shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine prompted warnings by Kyiv on Wednesday that the move would weaken its ability to defend against intensifying airstrikes and battlefield advances.

    Ukraine said it had called in the acting U.S. envoy to Kyiv to underline the importance of military aid from Washington continuing, and cautioned that any cut-off would embolden Russia in its war in Ukraine.

    The Pentagon’s decision – tied to concerns that U.S. military stockpiles are too low – began in recent days and includes 30 Patriot air defence missiles, which Ukraine relies on to destroy fast-moving ballistic missiles, four people familiar with the decision said on Wednesday.

    It also includes nearly 8,500 155mm artillery shells, more than 250 precision GMLRS (mobile rocket artillery) missiles and 142 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles, they said.

    “The Ukrainian side emphasised that any delay or procrastination in supporting Ukraine‘s defence capabilities will only encourage the aggressor to continue the war and terror, rather than seek peace,” Ukraine‘s foreign ministry said.

    The defence ministry said it had not been officially notified of any halt in U.S. shipments and was seeking clarity from its American counterparts.

    A Ukrainian source familiar with the situation said the decision was a “total shock.”

    Deputy White House press secretary Anna Kelly said the decision was made “to put America’s interests first” following a Department of Defense review of military support around the world.

    “The strength of the United States Armed Forces remains unquestioned — just ask Iran,” she said, referring to U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities last month.

    NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the U.S. needed to take care of its stockpiles but told Fox News that “in the short term, Ukraine cannot do without all the support it can get” when it comes to ammunition and air defence systems.

    RUSSIAN AIRSTRIKES

    Dozens of people have been killed in recent airstrikes on Ukrainian cities and Russian forces, which control about a fifth of Ukraine, have been making gains in the east.

    Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the decision risks Ukrainian lives, undermines Washington’s credibility and will make it harder to end the war.

    “This sends a message to not just our allies, like Ukraine and our European allies, but it sends a message to our adversaries, to China, to North Korea, to Russia, that our allies can’t count on the United States,” she told WKBK radio in her home state New Hampshire.

    Since U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January, he has softened Washington’s position towards Russia, seeking a diplomatic solution to the war and raising doubts about future U.S. military support for Kyiv.

    Trump said last week he was considering selling more Patriot air defence missiles to Ukraine after meeting President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

    Fedir Venislavskyi, a member of the Ukrainian parliament’s national security and defence committee, said the decision to halt shipments was “very unpleasant for us“.

    In an email, the Pentagon said it was providing Trump with options to continue military aid to Ukraine in line with the goal of ending the war.

    Elbridge Colby, undersecretary of defence for policy, said it was “rigorously examining and adapting its approach…while also preserving U.S. forces’ readiness.”

    All weapons aid was briefly stopped in February, with a second, longer halt in March. Washington resumed sending the last of the aid approved under the previous administration, of Democratic President Joe Biden, but no new aid to Ukraine has been announced.

    The Kremlin welcomed the news of a halt, saying the conflict would end sooner if fewer arms reached Ukraine.

    Kyiv residents expressed alarm at the Pentagon’s decision.

    “If we end up in a situation where there’s no air defence left, I will move (out of Kyiv), because my safety is my first concern,” said Oksana Kurochkina, a 35-year-old lawyer.

    On the battlefield, a halt in precision munitions would limit the capacity of Ukrainian troops to strike Russian positions farther behind the front line, said Jack Watling, a military analyst at the Royal United Services Institute.

    “In short, this decision will cost Ukrainian lives and territory,” he said.

      BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) — China announced at a press conference on Thursday that an evening gala will be held on Sept. 3 in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

      The event will be jointly organized by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the China Media Group, the Political Work Department of the China Military Commission and the Beijing municipal government, according to the State Council Information Office.

      China designated Sept. 3 as Victory Day to mark the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on Sept. 2, 1945.

    In October 2024, the Hefei City Urban Memory Museum opened its doors, featuring cutting-edge digital exhibits — from immersive light projections and interactive systems to VR experiences — across 58 installations and 37 short films. These technologies breathe new life into the city’s history, making exhibitions both captivating and educational while deepening the integration of culture and tourism.

    Leveraging its top-tier scientific resources, Luyang has pioneered sci-tech education tours, with 13 provincial/city-level research and tourism bases and nine curated routes. In 2025, these attracted over 150,000 visitors, showcasing the district’s thriving innovative tourism scene.

    The 2025 BRICS Seminar on Governance and Cultural Exchanges Forum was held on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, bringing together experts to discuss how the bloc can promote stability in an era of global transformation.

    Yu Yunquan, president of the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies (ACCWS), and Cimar Azeredo Pereira, special advisor to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), delivered keynote speeches at the event.

    Yu emphasized that in an era where certainty and stability are becoming increasingly scarce global resources, it is imperative to further strengthen Greater BRICS cooperation to promote an equitable and orderly multipolar world and foster inclusive economic globalization, thereby maintaining a stable development environment. 

    He also stressed the need to enhance exchanges of governance experiences and knowledge-sharing to explore independent development paths, actively participate in setting global governance agendas to steer orderly development processes, and deepen cross-cultural dialogues to cultivate an inclusive atmosphere for development.

    Azeredo Pereira emphasized that statistical cooperation among BRICS countries plays a pivotal role in enhancing mutual understanding and trust among member states. By adopting collaborative and innovative approaches to address emerging statistical challenges in the digital era, such cooperation proves fundamental in advancing sustainable development and economic integration within the BRICS framework.

    Participating delegates unanimously recognized China’s significant contributions to global development and governance, particularly its leadership in fostering BRICS and Global South collaboration. China’s global initiatives were widely recognized as providing crucial platforms for fostering shared progress in development, security and cultural exchange.

    The main forum was chaired by Xin Feng, director of the Comprehensive Business Department of China International Communications Group (CICG). Sun Jingxin, vice president of the ACCWS, presented two research reports on behalf of the project team: “Greater BRICS Cooperation: A Pillar of Stability and Progress in a Changing World” and “Global Survey: BRICS Cooperation in the New Era of Global Development 2025.”

    The forum was organized jointly by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, China International Communications Group, and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics.

    The nation’s first domestically built aircraft carrier, the CNS Shandong, sailed into Hong Kong Special Administrative Region waters on Thursday on its maiden visit to the city, accompanied by a powerful escort fleet.

    The sprawling carrier, alongside three escort ships — the Yan’an (Type 055 destroyer), Zhanjiang (Type 052D destroyer), and Yuncheng (Type 054A frigate) — received a grand water salute as they sailed into Hong Kong waters and toward Victoria Harbor at around 8:00 am, drawing cheers from enthusiastic crowds gathered along the waterfront.

    The Shandong‘s massive flight deck — standing 20 stories tall and spanning two football fields — showcased 10 fighter jets alongside a formation of more than 700 sailors spelling out guoan jiahao, a Chinese phrase meaning “a secure nation ensures thriving families”.

    Shandong‘s visit makes Hong Kong the only city to have played host to two serving Chinese carriers, following CNS Liaoning‘s 2017 visit for the handover’s 20th anniversary.

    A welcoming ceremony will be held at 10 am at the Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks — the People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison’s naval base on Stonecutters Island — where Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu will deliver a speech.

    The fleet’s five-day stay in Hong Kong — which includes exclusive public tours — came on the heels of the July 1 celebrations marking the 28th anniversary of the city’s return to the motherland.

    The timing also aligns with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, blending military display with anti-war themes.

    Shandong‘s arrival has been greeted with enthusiasm on social media, as Hong Kong residents eagerly shared tips on prime viewing locations to watch the carrier group’s passage through the scenic East Lamma Channel — the waterway separating Hong Kong Island from Lamma Island — before its final docking.

    The PLA HK garrison has distributed 10,000 free tickets through its WeChat account, with 2,000 allocated for tours of the Shandong anchored near Victoria Harbor.

    The remaining tickets will provide access to the guided-missile destroyer Zhanjiang and frigate Yuncheng docked at Stonecutters Island.

    Commissioned in December 2019, Shandong ushered in China’s “dual-carrier era”, joining the Liaoning, the nation’s first carrier commissioned in 2012.

    Shandong surpasses the Liaoning with a larger deck, expanded hangar, streamlined control tower, and upgraded radar and weaponry.

    The escort fleet underscores China’s shipbuilding prowess.

    For example, the Yan’an, named after a revolutionary base in Northwest China, features stealth and hypersonic missile capabilities, though it is not open to the public this time.

    Meanwhile, the Zhanjiang — nicknamed Chinese Shield — and Yuncheng, a veteran of anti-piracy missions, reflect the navy’s global operational reach.

    The Ministry of National Defense has said that the visit aims to demonstrate military modernization achievements and the country’s commitment to national security.

    Hong Kong legislators have praised the event as a “living patriotic lesson” highlighting China’s military and industrial advancements.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Winnie Ho attends Lisbon forum

    Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho attended the International Forum on Urbanism (IFoU) in Lisbon, Portugal, to promote Hong Kong’s resident-oriented “Well-being design” concepts and strategies.

     

    On Wednesday, Ms Ho began her visit to Lisbon by meeting Secretary of State for Housing in the Ministry of Infrastructure & Housing Patrícia Goncalves Costa, to exchange views on the housing policies of the two places.

     

    Afterwards, Ms Ho attended the IFoU held at the Pavilion of Portugal for the previous World Expo, where she explored the latest trends of housing planning, design and management, community engagement and more with scholars, industry representatives, professional bodies and students from the Mainland, Europe and the US.

     

    In the forum’s plenary session, Ms Ho highlighted that the “Well-being design” guide launched by the Housing Bureau and the Housing Authority last year, serves as a reference for the future design of new public housing estates and the improvement works of existing estates, to create a more comfortable and vibrant living environment for the residents.

         

    She also said that Hong Kong can give full play to the role of being a “super connector” through interactions and exchanges in different places.

     

    The IFoU is organised in different cities each year, and this year’s edition was hosted by the University of Lisbon with the theme of Future Living.

         

    After the forum, Ms Ho had dinner with Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Portuguese Republic Zhao Bentang, and briefed him on Hong Kong’s latest housing policies and initiatives.

  • Indian stock market opens higher, Sensex above 83,400

    The Indian benchmark indices opened higher on Thursday amid positive global cues, with buying seen in the IT, pharma and auto sectors in early trade.

    At around 9:25 am, the Sensex was trading 68.28 points or 0.08 per cent higher at 83,477.97, while the Nifty added 19.30 points or 0.08 per cent to reach 25,472.70.

    Analysts said the market is currently consolidating the recent bullish rectangle breakout, and as long as the 25,200–25,270 range holds, bulls are merely taking a breather.

    “Below 25,200, we risk a slide to 25,000. On the upside, the recent swing high at 25,670 is where the next bullish trigger lies,” said Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities.

    With the deadline for the US tariff pause expiring next week, it remains to be seen whether the current global optimism will hold.

    “Today is the weekly derivatives expiry, so higher-than-usual volatility may be seen,” he added.

    The Nifty Bank was down 9.90 points or 0.02 per cent at 56,989.30 in early trade.

    The Nifty Midcap 100 index was trading at 59,645.25, down 22 points or 0.04 per cent. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index stood at 18,969.35, declining 7.75 points or 0.04 per cent.

    In the Sensex pack, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, BEL, Titan, Axis Bank, NTPC, SBI, HCL Tech and ITC were among the top losers.

    On the other hand, Eternal (earlier Zomato), Asian Paints, M&M, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki and ICICI Bank were among the top gainers.

    Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) extended their selling on July 2, offloading equities worth ₹1,561.62 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued their buying spree, purchasing equities worth ₹3,036.68 crore on the same day.

    In Asian markets, Bangkok, China, Japan, Seoul and Jakarta were trading in the green, whereas only Hong Kong was in the red.

    In the last trading session, the Dow Jones in the US closed at 44,484.42, down 10.52 points or 0.02 per cent. The S&P 500 ended with a gain of 29.41 points or 0.47 per cent at 6,227.42, while the Nasdaq closed at 20,393.13, up 190.24 points or 0.94 per cent.

    Analysts said the US-Vietnam trade deal indicates the US administration’s eagerness to secure as many trade agreements as possible, as deals with the EU and Japan appear unlikely in the near term.
