    Robot police have officially been deployed in southwest China’s Chengdu, one of the country’s top tourist cities, as part of its smart policing initiative in the lead-up to the 2025 World Games in this city in August.

    At Tianfu Square, the city’s busiest public space with daily foot traffic of up to 100,000 people, five Robocop officers have begun routine patrols alongside human police. Working in pairs and rotating every two to three hours, they can send real-time footage and alerts to command centers to assist nearby officers.

    The robots, which include quadruped robots, wheeled robots and humanoid robots, have been undergoing real-world testing since June 16. These trials are designed to improve their operational algorithms in authentic urban environments and adaptability for complex scenarios.

    One humanoid robot has drawn special attention from the public. It waves its arms in sync with traffic lights to guide vehicles and pedestrians, serving as a futuristic presence in this city in Sichuan Province.

    Equipped with autonomous navigation, intelligent obstacle avoidance, real-time audio-video streaming and remote communication capabilities, these Robocop officers assist with policing duties, serve tourists and manage traffic. They can also return to their charging docks automatically, enabling round-the-clock functionality.

    “Robocops can operate overnight and reach high-risk or narrow areas that human officers may not easily access. They can carry up to 20 kilograms of gear, which is a big help to us,” said Zhang Lihang, deputy director of the technology and informatization department of the Chengdu Public Security Bureau. “Despite temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius and light rain this week, the Robocops performed their duties smoothly.”

    “If tourists suffer from heatstroke and fall, the Robocops can detect it in a timely manner and call for rescue,” he added.

    “We continuously iterate our algorithms in real-world deployments to enhance the Robocops’ environmental perception and motion control capabilities. At present, our wheeled robots demonstrate outstanding performance in speed regulation and stable video transmission,” said Xu Qin, head of the robotics division at the Chengdu Humanoid Robot Innovation Center and a co-developer of the Robocops.

    Chengdu’s Robocop program reflects China’s broader efforts to accelerate the embodied intelligence industry and advance new productive forces. Cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hangzhou are also conducting pilot programs and real-world trials.

    Industry estimates suggest that China’s embodied intelligence market exceeded 480 billion yuan (about 66 billion U.S. dollars) in 2024. With continued advances in large language models, this market is expected to surpass 1 trillion yuan by 2031.

    In the charming countryside of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Alex Turner, a British expat, made a few taps on his phone as he hobbled back to his guesthouse, careful not to knock the toe he had just hurt while out for a hike. In just 30 minutes, a sealed yellow paper bag arrived at his doorstep.

    “I bought a nail clipper and some first-aid stuff to deal with the injury,” said Turner. “And I also bundled some dental floss and mosquito repellent for a bigger discount.”

    This prompt service epitomizes China’s rapidly growing instant retail sector. E-commerce giants like Alibaba, JD.com, and Meituan have all placed significant bets on a new model centered around the concept of “everything can be delivered within 30 minutes.” As more and more consumers in China turn to smartphone apps for everything from groceries to medical supplies, instant, or “flash,” delivery has become a game-changer to daily life.

    A recent report by MoonFox Data, a leading Chinese data insights provider, shows that China’s instant retail sector reached 780 billion yuan (about 108.8 billion U.S. dollars) in 2024 and is projected to exceed 2 trillion yuan by 2030. Platforms run by Alibaba, JD.com and Meituan are fueling this growth by catering to consumers’ increasing demand for instant gratification.

    “Today’s consumers prioritize speed and accessibility above all,” said Zhao Feng, dean of the school of business administration at Guangxi University of Finance and Economics. “The promise of half-hour delivery is not just a marketing ploy — it’s a game-changer. It taps into consumers’ desire for convenience, reduces the hassle of shopping, encourages impulse buying, and ultimately drives up overall spending.”

    A study by consultancy firm Accenture shows that over half of consumers born after 1995 expect same-day delivery for their purchases and are more willing to pay a premium for faster shipping.

    For Li Wei, a personal trainer in Nanning, Guangxi’s capital city, the speed of instant retail eliminates the need to plan ahead.

    “I don’t have to stock up on toilet paper, snacks or energy drinks anymore,” said Li. “With a few clicks on my phone, the groceries will be here before I can second-guess myself.”

    The appeal extends beyond on-demand convenience as many cost-conscious shoppers chase discounts and enjoy the thrill of snagging a deal.

    “Sometimes, it goes beyond the convenience,” said Zhang Chaozhen, a postgraduate student at Guangxi University as she scrolled through an app during her lunch break, hunting for the steepest discounts on a skincare product. “It’s about getting a deal and feeling smart about it.”

    Behind the scenes, the explosive wave of instant retail is reshaping supply chain logistics, fostering a deeper connection between online platforms and brick-and-mortar stores.

    Unlike traditional e-commerce, which typically depends on a few centralized warehouses, instant retail platforms utilize advanced AI to connect hundreds of local stores with a vast network of strategically placed, highly automated micro-warehouses.

    These facilities are designed to process retailer orders efficiently, expedite inventory shipment, and prevent the accumulation of excess “wrong” products in stores, according to Zhou Yimu, an industry insider and brand manager of Guishuangbai, a local convenience store chain in Guangxi.

    In late May, Alibaba reported that its flash delivery platform has logged a daily order volume exceeding 40 million in less than one month since its official launch.

    The model of instant retail unleashes a “triple wins” dynamic as the digital platforms gain access to a vast network of inventory, retailers boost sales through online channels, and consumers enjoy faster delivery and broader product selections, said Liu Yuanshuai with Chaoyigou, a supermarket chain that specializes in instant retail business in Guangxi.

    “Partnering with those instant retail platforms has been the revenue booster,” said Tao Zhaogui, a manager at a chain pharmacy in Nanning. “Before, we largely relied on walk-in customers, but now, with the round-the-clock access to online prescriptions, our online orders have increased by 41 percent year on year.”

    However, the rapid growth of the sector has also raised concerns about consumer rights. Some platforms are accused of exploiting big data to engage in “discriminatory pricing,” adjusting prices based on individual consumers’ purchase histories, according to Tang Yating, a lawyer specializing in civil and commercial law. Additionally, after-sales services often fall short, with cumbersome return and exchange policies that remain unresolved. There is also a tendency for platforms and sellers to shirk responsibility.

    “Stronger oversight is the key,” said Tang. “Clear regulations must safeguard consumer interests within this rapidly evolving sector by ensuring transparency and accountability in pricing and service.”

    As an integral part of Beijing Marathon’s classic route, the central avenue between China’s capital city’s iconic dual Olympic venues “Bird’s Nest” and “Water Cube” has long been an attraction for runners.

    On Saturday morning, 500 participants started an event here on the avenue, which was one of the fitness-for-all activities held nationwide to celebrate the upcoming International Olympic Day, which falls on June 23.

    The 4.5-kilometer race took place mainly around the National Stadium, known as the Bird’s Nest, where both the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics were staged. The finish line was near the Beijing Olympic Museum, located south of the stadium.

    Wang Shuchuan, a former triathlete, came to the starting area early in the morning to prepare for his vlog. “I kept exercising and participating in marathon events after my athletic career had ended. I hope to lead more people to join in sporting events through my videos and enlarge our running community,” he said.

    The race also attracted the likes of Italy’s Paola Marras, who took part in an event at Beijing’s Olympic Park. “I work in Beijing. During the 2022 Winter Olympics, I watched competitions on TV. The sports atmosphere in Beijing is good, and I like the [tennis] China Open in particular,” she said.

    During the activity, Chinese Olympic champions Ma Long and Zhang Yufei sent their best wishes to sports lovers in an interview.

    “Physical exercise is relevant to health. I can feel the public’s enthusiasm for sports. The outstanding performance of Chinese athletes on the international stage is inspiring more people to get involved. Exercise is a lifelong hobby. I hope people can find the sports they love and practice in a healthy and scientific way,” said Ma, 36, China’s most decorated Olympian with six gold medals.

    Swimmer Zhang reflected on her Olympic journey, saying, “At the 2016 Rio Games, I might not have fully understood the significance of the Olympics. Then, after winning gold at Tokyo [2020], I felt the power of our teamwork. Last year at the Paris Olympics, I realized that even though I had made the utmost effort, it was still hard to get corresponding rewards. That is sport.”

    “However, what remains unchanged is that the Olympic spirit leads me to pursue my next goal,” Zhang added.

    Established in 1948, the Olympic Day is a global celebration of sport and takes place on June 23 each year to commemorate the day the International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894 – the birth of the modern Olympic Games.

    With the theme of “Let’s Move,” the celebrating activities of Olympic Day were held in 12 cities in China on Saturday, also including Shenzhen, Nanjing, Ningbo, Zhangjiakou and Chengde. A variety of activities such as hiking, running, cycling, football, basketball and table tennis had a wide participation all over the country.

    Li Jing, Deputy Director of the General Administration of Sport of China, said, “At the Paris Olympics, the Chinese delegation achieved its best results in the history of participating in the Olympics abroad, which interpreted the Olympic motto of ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together’ and demonstrated the confidence, optimism, passion, and friendliness of Chinese youth.”

    “Those remarkable moments of Chinese athletes at the Olympics motivated more people to embrace sports activities. Looking ahead, we hope the Chinese sports spirit will continue to shine at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics,” Li noted.

    Guiyang, in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, has earned the title “City of Coffee Champions,” a remarkable feat for a region that grows no coffee beans but fosters champion baristas and thousands of cafes.

    Its streets, lined with over 3,000 cafes boasting a density surpassing even that of east China’s Shanghai, serve as the training ground for an elite cadre of baristas dominating global competitions.

    PIONEER SHOPS TO WORLD STAGE

    Guiyang’s coffee culture started in 2005 when pioneering cafes introduced specialty coffee years before it became mainstream in China. This sparked passion in a generation of young coffee enthusiasts.

    Peng Jinyang is among the pioneers. In May 2025, the Guiyang native won the World Brewers Cup Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia. Already China’s 2024 champion, this marked the first such win for a Chinese mainland competitor since 2019.

    Peng discovered specialty coffee in a Guiyang cafe during high school. His career faced early struggles — his first coffee bean venture sold only 40 bags in its opening month. He then temporarily diversified his business before again focusing solely on coffee roasting via his Captain George brand.

    To improve his skills, Peng traveled for training purposes and learned directly from world champions. He also brought global expertise back to Guiyang by organizing workshops featuring top baristas.

    His competitive record is impressive — champion roaster at Taiwan’s Takao International Coffee Competition (2016), repeated top finishes in the China Brewers Cup Championship (CBrC), and his recent world title. His team, meanwhile, has dominated the CBrC for five consecutive years since 2020.

    Notably, Guiyang has so far nurtured more than 10 world and national titleholders.

    COMMUNITY COFFEE CULTURE

    Black Rock Coffee owner Lei Ming faced a critical choice during a 2017 business slump. Rather than close down, he opted to borrow money to renovate and deepen his coffee expertise. This risk succeeded handsomely.

    After the renovation, his customer base recovered, while Lei also transitioned from competitor to certified coffee judge. During this year’s Dragon Boat Festival, Black Rock served over 300 cups daily, with tourists making up nearly 75 percent of its patrons.

    Lei’s story echoes that of Liu Kaisheng, who started as a barista at one of Guiyang’s earliest specialty coffee cafes. Unhappy with the inconsistent bean quality, Liu taught himself roasting, progressing from temporary setups to a professional studio.

    “Focus entirely on the quality of coffee,” he said. Such dedication is common among Guiyang cafe owners — many of whom are both competition champions and certified judges.

    LOCAL FLAVORS DRIVE INNOVATION

    Guiyang’s cafes stand out through specializing in niches like roasting, brewing, latte art and creative drinks, thereby building unique identities in a crowded market.

    Innovation often carries a local flavor. Lei’s unexpected fusion, a blending of Guiyang’s fish mint with an Americano, evolved from a curiosity into a signature hit. In addition, his “One Bean, Three Ways” menu, pairing single-origin coffee with regional ingredients like fish mint, became a bestseller.

    Beyond taste, unique spaces also fuel the Guiyang coffee scene. Orchard Coffee, housed in a concrete-and-glass structure resembling an art community more than a traditional cafe, merges a roastery with an educational hub. Founder Qiang Hua, himself a top competition judge, said that “champions aren’t just about brewing well — they must elevate the entire industry and push peers forward.”

    At Good Coffee, meanwhile, artistry is evident on the cup. Cups hand-painted by owner Luo Nianyu and her team transform each serving into a unique canvas, earning the cafe a reputation as Guiyang’s “most warm-hearted.”

    The shop floor of a pajama factory in Jiangsu Province, east China, had stood still for some time before recently springing back to life, its resurrection kickstarted by a fluffy toy.

    “Labubu was not really my cup of tea, but now I think it is adorable,” said Qiu Zunzun, general manager of Shuofeng daily necessities company in Suzhou, jokingly.

    With its signature spiky toothed grin, Labubu has taken the world by storm. Noticing the craze, Qiu, spotted a gap in the market — outfits for collectors to dress up their fluffy friends. So, he bought some toy samples and cloth, and by the end of May, the factory was rolling out dresses for the little imp.

    “In less than 20 days we produced more than 80 kinds of doll’s dresses, with a turnover of about 170,000 yuan (about 23,643 U.S. dollars).” Qiu estimated that with orders still growing, the monthly sales revenue could reach 1 million yuan.

    The punky, cute, bunny-eared creature from China has inspired fans around the world to line up for a chance to own one. It is the latest case of Chinese IP globalization, which signals a shift in China’s role from a manufacturing hub to a source of original cultural exports, and injects vitality into traditional industries.

    CHINESE IP GOES ABROAD

    Maraid Vintena in Sydney, Australia, lined up for an hour earlier this week to check the Pop Mart Labubu vending machine in her suburb. “There are four Pop Mart vending machines near my house,” she said. “But most of the time, they’re sold out. I check their website like ten times a day… I’m really addicted, but it’s fun.”

    “As you get older, life is a little bit mundane. Something small, like a Labubu, a blind box, is like a little bit of excitement,” Vintena said, explaining why she fell in love with the doll.

    Amid the ever-growing Labubu craze, fashion brand Uniqlo has announced to partner with Pop Mart for their new collection The Monsters.

    It is not the only Chinese IP which gained recognition around the world. From the hit video game “Black Myth: Wukong” last year that amassed 1.04 million concurrent players merely an hour after its debut, to the cinematic marvel of “Ne Zha 2,” which has risen to the fifth spot on the worldwide box office chart, success of Chinese IP shows the rise of both cultural confidence and the empowerment of the country’s industrial system, said Wang Ruotong, a researcher with the Tianjin Foreign Studies University.

    Beyond the cultural sector, a number of Chinese brands have made inroads into the world-class IP categories, from the artificial intelligence (AI) to new energy vehicles and consumer technology.

    Data from China’s General Administration of Customs shows that China sustained its growth momentum on exports of new energy vehicles, with the volume of pure electric car exports topping 2 million units for the first time in 2024.

    Chinese carmaker BYD is establishing factories in Thailand and Mexico, integrating Chinese aesthetics into automotive design.

    In the AI domain, China has made holistic advancements in AI development, fostering a thriving AI industrial ecosystem. The country now hosts over 400 “little giant” firms — specialized small and medium-sized enterprises that excel in niche AI markets, including AI innovator DeepSeek.

    The vibrant growth of creative Chinese IPs has been driven by China’s booming domestic cultural consumption and a solid industrial manufacturing foundation. As China shifts from mass production to smart, high-end manufacturing, the fusion of aesthetics and craftsmanship is driving the country’s manufacturing sector to move up the global value chain.

    In 2024, China’s per-capita expenditure on education, culture, and entertainment registered 3,189 yuan, marking a 9.8-percent increase and accounting for 11.3 percent of total per-capita consumption spending, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The continuously expanding cultural consumption market is emerging as a robust engine driving the development of China’s IP industry.

    INJECTING VITALITY INTO TRADITIONAL INDUSTRIES

    At Yiwu International Trade Market, buyers carrying black plastic bags walk from one booth to another asking “do you have dresses for Labubu?” The global frenzy for this tiny creature has offered business opportunities for China’s “world supermarket”.

    In Zhu Hui’s store, one could not only find shirts, trousers and skirts for Labubu, but also accessories like glasses and hats. “Our dresses are sold at seven to 15 yuan a piece, while the accessories are one or two yuan each,” she said.

    Zhu’s store opened only half a month ago, with number of orders increasing quickly. “At first we received orders for dozens or several hundred pieces a day, but now it is more than 10,000 pieces,” she said. Zhu has about 50 workers in her factory, all of whom are working overtime recently.

    Inspired by Labubu, other toy producers also tried to make their products more attractive.

    Sun Lijuan is manager of the Yiwu Hongsheng Toys Factory, which exports dolls to more than 80 countries and regions in South America, Middle East, Central Asia, Europe and Africa.

    “Our dolls can talk, sing and tell stories,” she said. Recently they are applying AI technology to create products to meet different needs of consumers.

    Sun told Xinhua that in recent years, they had witnessed the development of new technology which has empowered their business and helped them avoid homogeneous competition. Their toy factory was founded 13 years ago, but in recent years its turnover has been growing steadily.

    “The greatest potential for future IP to go global lies in the continuous development of content and its deep integration with technology,” said Wang Ruotong. “With the maturation of technologies such as AI and virtual reality, the presentation of IP is going towards immersive and interactive experience.”

    “China has a solid foundation in manufacturing,” she continued. “Therefore, the popularity of Labubu this time brought a huge development opportunity to this industry. I’m sure that in the future there will be more Labubus emerging.”

    URUMQI, June 23 (Xinhua) — International passenger airlines have linked northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region with all five Central Asian countries, according to Xinjiang Airport Group Co., Ltd.

    According to the data, international passenger air routes have now linked Xinjiang with a total of 21 cities in 17 countries, including Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia, as well as countries in Western, South and Southeast Asia.

    As previously reported by the Xinjiang branch of China Southern Airlines, since the beginning of 2025, the volume of passenger and cargo air transportation from Xinjiang to Central Asia has grown by 36 percent and 200 percent year-on-year, respectively.

    During the peak summer holiday season, up to 70 flights are expected to operate weekly between Xinjiang and the Central Asian region.

    The aforementioned corporation expressed its willingness to continue to open, increase the frequency or restore passenger flights connecting Xinjiang with more places around the world to advance the construction of an efficient and smooth connectivity network under the Belt and Road Initiative.

    The majority of people in Taiwan hold a strong belief in Chinese culture and identity, which is an enduring virtue, said Ma Ying-jeou, former chairman of the Chinese Kuomintang party, during a commemorative ceremony on the Chinese mainland on Saturday.

    On Saturday morning, the annual ceremony honoring Fu Xi, a mythical ancestor of Chinese civilization, took place at Fu Xi Temple in Tianshui, a city in Northwest China’s Gansu province that is regarded as the birthplace of Fu Xi and the cradle of Fu Xi culture. Paying tribute to Fu Xi is a local tradition in Tianshui that dates back to ancient times.

    Ma and a delegation of students from China’s Taiwan island participated in the ceremony.

    “This is not only a time-honored tradition of the Chinese nation to trace its roots and honor its ancestors, but also a valuable opportunity for young people to experience the profound influence of Chinese culture and civilization,” Ma said after the ceremony.

    The ceremony, which began at 9:50 am, was held simultaneously on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, with a parallel event held at Xianse Temple in New Taipei City in Taiwan. It marked the 12th consecutive cross-Strait joint commemoration of Fu Xi.

    On Saturday, which marked the solar term Summer Solstice, the ceremony began with 34 drumbeats, symbolizing the descendants of Chinese civilization across the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities on the mainland, as well as the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan. A series of solemn rituals followed, including the reading of a eulogy, ceremonial bows and ritual music and dance performances.

    Ma and Song Tao, head of both the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, attended the ceremony together and paid their respects at the ancestral temple.

    Ma said he brought the student delegation to take part in the ceremony to demonstrate the importance that people in Taiwan place on honoring their ancestors and respecting traditional Chinese culture, and to raise awareness about the need to preserve and pass on the nation’s cultural heritage.

    “I hope that through the solemn tribute to the cultural ancestor of Chinese civilization, young people across the Strait could join hands and work together to build a bright future for the Chinese nation,” Ma said.

    The ceremony in Tianshui drew around 750 participants from home and abroad, including more than 240 compatriots from Taiwan.

    In New Taipei City, Wang Jinpyng, the officiant of the commemorative ceremony and a KMT politician, noted that Fu Xi represents the root of Chinese culture. He expressed the hope that Fu Xi culture could be further promoted on the island to strengthen cultural confidence and identity.

  • MIL-OSI China: ‘Discovering the Clown’ makes Chinese debut at Beijing Intl Book Fair

    The Chinese edition of “Discovering the Clown,” a highly influential guide to acting, was released by Jilin Publishing Group at the 31st Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) on June 20. 

    Written by Christopher Bayes, chair of the Yale School of Drama, the book was translated into Chinese by acting educator Luo Yu and 17-year-old Chen Yinuo, marking its debut to Chinese readers.

    This critically acclaimed work in drama education examines the familiar yet mysterious figure of the clown, guiding readers to discover their authentic selves and sense of humor.

    At the launch, the translators discussed how the translation process incorporated theater techniques and demonstrated how clowning can serve as a healing force beyond performance.

    Seventeen-year-old Chen said her experience volunteering as a therapeutic clown at Let’s Grow, a community for adults with disabilities , inspired her interest in clowning and led her to translate Bayes’ work.

    “What Christopher calls the ‘unsocialized self’ matched what we were doing — using absurdity to awaken emotional resonance,” Chen said.

    Co-translator Luo, an acting teacher at the Central Academy of Drama and co-founder of Yamashita Studio, contributed a theoretical perspective to the project. Luo said the translation creates a dialogue between Eastern and Western theater traditions and underscores the value of live performance as AI becomes more prominent in the creative arts. 

    “Machines can mimic techniques, but not the life essence of improvisation,” Luo said.

    “It’s a cross-disciplinary experiment where young translators engage with academic frameworks, and Western ideas meet Chinese aesthetics,” said a representative of Jilin Publishing Group’s Beijing office, highlighting the book’s role as a cultural bridge.

    China’s top political advisor Wang Huning met with Thailand’s National Assembly President and Speaker of the House of Representatives Wan Muhamad Noor Matha in Beijing on Sunday.

    Wang, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that in February this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra had reached an important consensus on deepening the building of the China-Thailand community with a shared future, further pointing out the direction for the development of bilateral relations.

    China is willing to work with Thailand to take the celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties as an opportunity to carry forward the traditional friendship, consolidate the political, economic and public foundation for the China-Thailand community with a shared future, and bring more benefits to the two peoples, Wang said.

    The CPPCC is ready to contribute to the development of relations between the two countries, Wang added.

    Wan Noor said the friendship between Thailand and China enjoys a long history, and the concept of Thailand and China as one family has been deeply rooted in people’s hearts.

    The Thai side supports the series of global initiatives proposed by President Xi and is willing to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields — including joint Belt and Road construction, economy and trade, and tourism.

    He also said the Thai parliament is willing to enhance exchanges and cooperation with China to promote the common development and prosperity of the two countries.

    The 17th batch of the Chinese medical team in Botswana on Sunday conducted a free medical outreach service and made donations at the SOS Children’s Village in Tlokweng, located on the outskirts of Gaborone, the capital of the southern African country.

    In a speech at the event, Motshwari Kitso, national director of SOS Children’s Villages Botswana, expressed deep appreciation for the support the organization has received from the Chinese Embassy in Botswana and the Chinese community over the years.

    SOS Children’s Villages Botswana, a nongovernmental organization that supports children and young people without parental care or at risk of losing it, operates three centers in Tlokweng village of South-East District, Francistown city of North-East District, and Serowe town of Central District.

    Currently, the organization cares for about 320 children at its three centers and supports an additional 1,500 children in the communities, Kitso said, expecting more medical outreach services in the future at the other two centers and in the surrounding communities.

    Community leader Lazarus Ikalafeng welcomed the arrival of the Chinese medical team and their outreach service, which encourages people to prioritize their health by coming forward to see a doctor.

    “The Chinese medical team has always been paying close attention to the health of children in Botswana,” said Fan Wandong, head of the Chinese medical team.

    He noted that through the medical outreach, the Chinese team would apply their medical expertise and clinical experience to promote the well-being of children, ensuring that their childhoods are filled with laughter rather than illness.

    In addition to medical checkups, Chinese doctors educated the children on proper hygiene practices, including handwashing and preventing the spread of contagious germs.

    The event was attended by Cui Yin, counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Botswana, and featured donations from the embassy, the Chinese medical team, and the Charity Association of Chinese in Botswana, among others. Donations included hygiene and disinfection supplies, essential medicines, school supplies, drinking water, daily necessities, food, and sports equipment.

    A suicide bomber stormed a crowded church in the Syrian capital Damascus during Sunday mass, opening fire on worshippers before detonating his explosives, killing at least 19 people and injuring dozens more, security sources and a monitoring group said.

    The Syrian health authorities put the latest official death toll at 13, with 53 others wounded.

    The blast ripped through the Mar Elias Church in the Dweilaa district, a predominantly Christian neighborhood on the eastern outskirts of Damascus, leaving behind blood-stained pews, shattered icons, and scenes of chaos, according to eyewitnesses and local media.

    The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacker opened fire inside the packed church before blowing himself up, causing “severe human losses.” The monitoring group reported that the toll may rise given the critical condition of many of the injured.

    Authorities from the interior security department confirmed that the perpetrator was affiliated with the Islamic State (IS). In a statement posted on X, interior chief Hamzah Al-Mustafa condemned the “cowardly terrorist act.” He emphasized that “such acts are contrary to the values of citizenship that bind Syrians together,” and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to national unity, equal citizenship, and defeating criminal groups that threaten public safety.

    Emergency responders cordoned off the area as ambulances rushed the wounded to Damascus hospitals. Authorities urged citizens to avoid the vicinity to allow medical teams to operate freely and prevent further casualties amid fears of additional attacks.

    The blast is the first of its kind targeting a church in Damascus in several years, sparking renewed concerns about sleeper cells operating in the capital.

    Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday that the United States must “receive the response to its aggression,” following U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

    Pezeshkian made the remarks during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, according to a statement from his office. In response to Macron’s call for restraint, Pezeshkian said the United States must face consequences for its attacks on Iran.

    He described the U.S. strikes as a “clear symbol of its insincerity and the baselessness of its claims about favoring dialogue and seeking peace.”

    Despite this, Pezeshkian stressed Iran’s continued commitment to diplomacy with Europe, saying, “We have always announced our readiness for dialogue and interaction with Europe and have never abandoned the path of diplomacy, as we maintain that nobody would suffer any harm from dialogue.”

    Macron reiterated France’s willingness to pursue negotiations with Iran and said Paris would continue efforts to halt the conflict and restore stability, according to the statement.

    U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday announced on Truth Social that American forces had completed strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, namely Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

    The U.S. strikes followed Israeli attacks launched since June 13 on various targets in Iran, including nuclear and military sites, killing several senior commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians.

    Iran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Israel. As of Saturday, more than 400 people have been killed and over 3,500 wounded in Iran, according to the Iranian Health Ministry. In Israel, authorities reported 24 fatalities.

    China’s permanent representative to the United Nations on Sunday condemned the United States for its strikes on Iranian nuclear sites at an emergency meeting of the Security Council.

    “Yesterday (Saturday), the United States conducted attacks on three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. China strongly condemns the U.S. attacks on Iran and the bombing of nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency,” said Fu Cong.

    The U.S. move seriously violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, as well as Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. It has exacerbated tensions in the Middle East and dealt a heavy blow to the international nuclear non-proliferation regime, he said.

    The international community must uphold justice and make concrete efforts to cool down the situation and restore peace and stability, he said.

    Fu called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the hostilities.

    “In the context of the abrupt escalation of tensions in the Middle East, China is deeply concerned about the risk of the situation getting out of control. The parties to the conflict, Israel in particular, should immediately cease fire to prevent a spiraling escalation and to resolutely avoid the spillover of the war,” he said.

    “The parties concerned should abide by international law, curb the impulse to use force, and avoid exacerbating conflicts and adding fuel to fire,” he added.

    A total of 1,060 agreements worth 6.3 trillion rubles (about 80.3 billion U.S. dollars) were signed at the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Russian presidential advisor Anton Kobyakov said Saturday.

    Kobyakov, who also serves as executive secretary of the SPIEF Organizing Committee, announced the figures at the forum’s closing press conference.

    He highlighted a renewed sense of optimism about restoring global business ties, noting that this year’s forum drew delegates from over 100 countries and regions.

    Held under the theme “Shared Values: The Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World,” the forum featured more than 350 events, including 24 business dialogues with key partner countries and regions.

    Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered the keynote address during the forum’s plenary session on Friday.

    Kobyakov also announced that Saudi Arabia will be the guest country at SPIEF 2026.

    First held in 1997, SPIEF has become one of Russia’s most important international economic forums.

    China’s Wang Xinyu continued her sensational form on grass courts, storming into her first-ever WTA Tour singles final with a straight-sets victory over world No. 20 Liudmila Samsonova in the semifinals of the WTA 500 Berlin Open on Saturday.

    The 23-year-old battled through early nerves in the opening set, exchanging breaks with Samsonova before steadying herself under pressure. After being broken mid-set, Wang responded immediately with a break of her own and went on to take the first set 6-4.

    Carrying that momentum into the second set, Wang dominated with aggressive returns and consistent baseline play. Samsonova, plagued by unforced errors, was unable to mount a comeback, and Wang closed out the match convincingly with a 6-1 win.

    “This week has been a dream for me. I’ve been playing unbelievable tennis here,” Wang said in her on-court interview. “Coming into every match here, I wasn’t expecting anything. For me, it was really just to enjoy the stage.”

    Colombian midfielder Jhon Arias opened the scoring for Fluminense with a fizzing 25-yard free-kick but Lee Jin-hyun equalized from a tight angle after Um Won-sang’s cross.

    Lee returned the favor as his pass from the left wing allowed Um to score with a diving header just before halftime.

    Gustavo Nunato levelled with a low finish after intercepting Milosz Trojak’s clearance and Juan Pablo Freytes made it 3-2 by slotting home from the edge of the six-yard box.

    Keno put the result beyond doubt with a looping stoppage-time header following Arias’ cross.

    Fluminense is now top of Group F with four points, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. Ulsan is last and has no chance of progressing.

    “We lost our focus at the end of the first half and they made us pay,” Fluminense manager Renato Gaucho told reporters. “We came back with a different attitude in the second half and the win gives us peace of mind.     In Seattle, Lautaro Martinez and Valentin Carboni scored for Inter Milan as the Italian side rallied late to overcome Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds 2-1.

    Ryoma Watanabe gave the J1 League outfit an early lead by sweeping home from 10 yards after Takuro Kaneko’s clever run and cross from the right flank.

    It took until the 78th minute for Inter to equalize as Martinez struck with an acrobatic volley following Nicolo Barella’s corner.

    The Serie A club suddenly had the momentum and Carboni gave his side the lead in the 92nd minute by pouncing on a loose ball and drilling a low effort past Shusaku Nishikawa.

    “The result is almost secondary,” Carboni said. “It was difficult out there. They defended in a very compact fashion and we had few opportunities. But We have the three points, and it is important to move on.”

    The victory leaves Inter second in Group E with four points while Urawa is last and cannot qualify for the knockout stage.

    In Cincinnati, Germany’s Borussia Dortmund stayed in contention for a place in the last 16 with a 4-3 win over South African side Mamelodi Sundowns.

    “I was expecting more, to be honest,” Borussia Dortmund boss Niko Kovac said. “We gave the ball away too easily and played too slowly. On the positive side, we scored four goals. We’re satisfied with the result given the difficult conditions. As a top team, you have to aim to score plenty of goals, but you also can’t afford to concede so many. That annoys me, but I try to stay pragmatic.”

    In Saturday’s late match, Argentina’s River Plate drew 0-0 with Mexican side Monterrey at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

    River Plate looked more likely to score but could not find a way past Monterrey’s Argentine goalkeeper Esteban Andrada, who made six saves.

    Alcaraz, who also won the grass-court ATP 500 event in 2023, admitted he didn’t expect to lift the trophy this time, having only practiced on grass for two days after taking time off following his successful French Open title defense earlier this month.

    The 22-year-old Spaniard was tested by Lehecka, dropping the second set, but gained the upper hand during key moments in the decider.

    “I came here with no expectations at all. I just came here with a goal to play two, three matches, try to feel great on grass and give myself the feedback of what I have to improve, what I have to better,” said the five-time Grand Slam winner, who will soon begin his Wimbledon title defense.

    “I just got used to the grass really quick, and I’m really proud about it,” added the world No. 2.

    Ten-man Real Madrid defeated Mexico’s Pachuca 3-1 in their Group H clash at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday.

    Madrid entered the match at Bank of America Stadium sitting second in the group behind FC Salzburg, following a 1-1 draw against Al Hilal in their opener. The Spanish giant was without star striker Kylian Mbappe, who is recovering from gastroenteritis.

    Center back Raul Asencio was shown a straight red card just seven minutes into the match for fouling Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon as the last defender outside the box.

    Despite being down a man, Vinicius Jr. nearly capitalized on a defensive error a few minutes later. Pachuca goalkeeper Carlos Moreno miscontrolled a soft back pass but managed to poke the ball away just before Vinicius could reach it.

    Pachuca then tested Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois twice, with close-range efforts from Robert Kenedy and Alan Bautista, but the Belgian made both saves.

    Jude Bellingham opened the scoring for Madrid in the 35th minute, collecting a pass from Fran Garcia inside the box and firing into the bottom right corner. Madrid doubled the lead just before halftime when Gonzalo Garcia set up Arda Guler, who slotted the ball into the far post.

    “It’s twice in two games now, the same mistake. It might have been only slight contact but he has to be a bit more intelligent. But he knows that. We are going to battle for him and win without him. And then when he returns, to win then too,” Courtois told DAZN at the break regarding Asencio’s dismissal.

    Federico Valverde added a third for Madrid in the 70th minute, before Elias Montiel pulled one back for Pachuca ten minutes later.

    Al Hilal will face Pachuca in their final group match on Thursday in Nashville, while Real Madrid meets Salzburg the same day in Philadelphia.

    Veteran forward Neymar is close to extending his contract with Santos, the Brazilian Serie A club’s president said on Sunday.

    The 33-year-old’s current deal is set to expire on June 30 and local media have linked him with a possible move to Major League Soccer.

    But Santos has intensified efforts to retain the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star in recent days and is confident a deal will be finalized soon.

    “We are talking to Neymar’s representatives,” club president Marcelo Teixeira told Radio Bandeirantes. “We are making great progress with our negotiations and are very close to a new agreement that would allow Neymar to stay for a new period.”

    Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, has struggled for form and fitness since returning from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament sustained in October 2023.

    He has made just 12 appearances across all competitions for Santos this year, scoring three goals and providing three assists, after rejoining his boyhood club on a six-month contract in January.

    Teixeira defended the attacker from criticism that his off-field behavior and celebrity lifestyle were affecting his game.

    “Off the pitch, he has his issues that are always very controversial,” Teixeira said. “His profile means that everything he does has worldwide repercussions. We understand that.”

    Teixeira added that his goal was to help Neymar recover in time to play for Brazil at next year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

    “We all want to see Neymar there, and he wants to play,” he said. “He’s going through a recovery process and we want to help him through it so that he can come back better and stronger very soon.”

    U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities drew swift condemnation across the Middle East on Sunday, stoking fears that the latest escalation could ignite a broader regional conflict.

    The attacks, which targeted key Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday, further destabilized an already volatile landscape. Regional leaders warned the situation risked spiraling into a wider cycle of violence with grave consequences.

    The Arab League voiced on Sunday “deep concern” over the developments, condemning “any military actions that violate the sovereignty of states.” In a statement, it warned that the escalation risked triggering “an endless cycle of ongoing violence, with negative repercussions for all.”

    Türkiye also sounded the alarm, calling the U.S. strikes a grave escalation. “We have repeatedly warned of the risk that regional conflicts, ignited by Israeli aggression and destabilization, could spiral out of control. Today’s U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities has brought this risk to its highest level,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said.

    Ankara cautioned that the situation may escalate from a regional dispute into a global crisis, urging restraint and renewed diplomacy.

    Egypt’s Foreign Ministry condemned the “rapid escalation,” reiterating its rejection of any actions that violate the United Nations Charter and international law. Cairo warned that continued escalation could plunge the region into deeper chaos and called for political and diplomatic solutions as “the only path toward resolving the crisis.”

    Lebanese President Joseph Aoun echoed the warnings, saying the strikes risked igniting a broader conflict. “Such developments could threaten security and stability across multiple countries and regions,” he said, urging restraint and serious negotiations to prevent further bloodshed. “This escalation could be prolonged, and the cost may be unbearable,” Aoun added.

    Saudi Arabia also expressed concern, condemning the violation of Iran’s sovereignty. The Saudi Foreign Ministry urged all parties to exercise restraint, reduce tensions, and avoid further escalation.

    Jordan’s Foreign Ministry warned of “catastrophic” consequences if hostilities continue. In a statement, it called for dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing respect for international law, the UN Charter, and state sovereignty.

    In the Gulf, United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the situation with fellow Gulf leaders, stressing the need for wisdom, restraint, and a commitment to diplomatic solutions.

    Sudan’s Foreign Ministry said the U.S. attack “pushes the region into further complexities that negatively impact international peace, security, and stability.” Khartoum reaffirmed its rejection of any violation of Iran’s sovereignty and called on the international community to support peaceful negotiations.

    Three Palestinian factions — Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine — denounced the strikes as a dangerous escalation that threatens international peace and security and serves Israeli interests.

    Chinese leading electric vehicle manufacturer BYD announced on Saturday the official delivery of its fifth vehicle carrier, the BYD XI’AN, in the city of Yizheng, east China’s Jiangsu Province, marking another significant advancement in its global sales and supply chain layout.

    With 16 vehicle decks, the 219.9-meter-long, 37.7-meter-wide BYD XI’AN features a service speed of 19 knots and a loading capacity of 9,200 vehicles, according to BYD, based in the tech hub of Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province.

    It utilizes cutting-edge LNG dual-fuel clean propulsion technology, significantly enhancing the vessel’s energy efficiency and emission reduction performance.

    Previously, BYD has already deployed four vehicle carriers into operation, transporting China’s new energy vehicles to global markets.

    The deployment of these vessels has significantly enhanced the company’s overseas delivery efficiency, reduced logistics costs and transport cycles, and accelerated BYD’s global expansion strategy, the company said.

    In the product showroom of a flashlight manufacturer in east China’s Zhejiang Province, rows of innovative lighting devices defy conventional expectations.

    Among them is a neck-worn model with 360-degree adjustable lighting, which can also serve as a magnetic work lamp when fixed on iron articles. A camping light with a built-in Bluetooth speaker caters to outdoor enthusiasts, while another model features a window-breaker for emergency situations.

    Far from obsolete, modern flashlights play critical roles in emergencies, adventures and workplaces. “Our mission is evolving them from backup devices to indispensable gear,” said Mao Bin, deputy general manager of Ningbo Xiesheng Lighting Co., Ltd.

    The company is located in Xidian Town in the city of Ningbo, where such innovations have transformed a local manufacturing industry into a global powerhouse.

    Producing 60 to 70 percent of China’s flashlight exports, this town’s 800 manufacturers generate 8 billion yuan (1.1 billion U.S. dollars) annually, shipping specialized lighting solutions to 50 countries and regions.

    The flashlight manufacturing history of the riverside town dates back to the early 1980s, when China’s reform and opening up spurred locals to trade their fishing nets for manufacturing tools, establishing household workshops to make flashlights.

    In the 1990s, when electrification replaced manual labor, the town’s workshops multiplied, but low-tech, high-volume and labor-intensive production soon hit limits.

    “Profit margins were slim and competition was cut-throat,” said Wu Shuanghai, deputy secretary-general of Xidian’s chamber of commerce, adding that the products were mainly sold at home via the small commodity hub of Yiwu, Zhejiang Province.

    The turning point came in October 2000, when 50 local enterprises pooled resources to charter a flight to the Canton Fair, a renowned event for foreign trade held in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou. For many of the farmers-turned-entrepreneurs, it was their first exposure to international buyers.

    “We were swarmed by reporters — it was overwhelming,” recalled Feng Caitong, general manager of Ningbo Baiyi Electric Co., Ltd., who secured his first overseas order, worth over 10,000 U.S. dollars, at the event. That year, the town saw its exports reach 45 million U.S. dollars.

    In April 2025, the town’s chamber of commerce organized nearly 100 companies to attend the 137th Canton Fair — its largest delegation ever.

    Black Forest Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. joined the delegation. Zhou Yiyun, the company’s business manager, said about 95 percent of their end buyers are from overseas, with exports reaching over 70 countries. Zhou and her team debuted at the fair with some 100 products, including multifunctional portable lights and solar-powered lamps, mostly new releases.

    To her surprise, although the team’s booth was not large, they managed to attract the most foreign buyers in the exhibition area. “High-quality, innovative products are the magnet,” Zhou explained.

    Having secured more than 200 patents of various designs, the company releases over 120 new products annually.

    Local flashlight makers are actively developing products for Belt and Road markets. For instance, Xiesheng’s solar flashlights are tailored for some regions in the Middle East, taking into account the unstable power supply there.

    According to the government work report released in March 2025, China will pursue integrated advancements in technological and industrial innovation.

    “Thanks to Xidian’s market, labor force and supply chain advantages, we can quickly adapt to trends and guarantee fast delivery, giving us confidence to expand globally,” said Wu of the chamber.

    China strongly condemns the U.S. attacks on Iran and bombing of nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Sunday.

    The spokesperson made the remarks when asked to comment on U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States carried out strikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran.

    The actions of the United States seriously violated the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, and have exacerbated tensions in the Middle East, the spokesperson said.

    China calls on the parties to the conflict, Israel in particular, to reach a ceasefire as soon as possible, ensure the safety of civilians, and start dialogue and negotiation, the spokesperson said.

    China stands ready to work with the international community to pool efforts together and uphold justice, and work for restoring peace and stability in the Middle East, the spokesperson said.
