Source: China State Council Information Office

China on Thursday rejected Japan’s so-called concerns over China’s joint exercises around the Taiwan Island, saying Japan’s words and actions blatantly violate the one-China principle.

The drills conducted by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command are aimed at warning and containing “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, and it is a legitimate and necessary action to defend China’s national sovereignty and uphold national unity, foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing.

“Japan has no right to point fingers at this, still less interfere with it,” he said in response to media reports that the Japanese side had expressed its concerns to China through diplomatic channels over the drills.

Guo said the Chinese side expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition and had lodged serious protests with the Japanese side.

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Taiwan question is at the core of China’s core interests, and bears on the political foundation of China-Japan relations and basic trust between the two countries.

The spokesperson pointed out that Japan committed innumerable crimes during its colonial rule over Taiwan of 50 years, and bears serious historical responsibilities to the Chinese people. “It should act all the more prudently.”

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-fascist War.

“We urge Japan to deeply reflect on history, uphold the principles in the four political documents between China and Japan and honor its solemn commitments on the Taiwan question, immediately stop interfering in China’s internal affairs, and abide by the one-China principle with concrete actions,” Guo said.

  • MIL-OSI China: US behind cyberattacks against China during Asian Winter Games: FM

Source: China State Council Information Office

The United States and its allies were the main source of cyberattacks against China during the ninth Asian Winter Games, a foreign ministry spokesperson said on Thursday, citing a newly released report.

The report was released by China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center and National Engineering Laboratory for Computer Virus Prevention Technology on Thursday.

It disclosed that the information systems of competition and critical network infrastructures in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China, were subjected to a large number of network attacks from abroad. The attacks were traced to countries and regions including the United States, the Netherlands, and Singapore.

“We take note of the report and express serious concerns over the malicious cyber activity it has exposed,” spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a daily news briefing.

He said that the report once again shows that around the world, China is one of the main victims of cyberattacks.

China urges the United States to adopt a responsible attitude, reflect on itself and refrain from slandering others, Guo said, adding that China will continue to take necessary measures to protect its own cybersecurity.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Thursday Canada will be responding by matching the U.S. approach with 25 percent tariffs on all vehicles imported from the United States that are not compliant with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

The prime minister said his government will also impose the tariff on non-Canadian content of any CUSMA-compliant vehicles from the U.S., adding that Mexico won’t be impacted.

Carney said that the global economy “is fundamentally different today than it was yesterday.”

“Yesterday’s actions by the U.S. administration, while not specifically targeting Canada, will rupture the global economy and adversely impact global economic growth,” he said.

“Our old relationship of steadily deepening integration with the United States is over. The 80-year period when the United States embraced the mantle of global economic leadership is over,” said Carney.

Carney also said his government has gone to the World Trade Organization to argue the tariffs violate international trade law.

Canada was spared from the 10 percent baseline tariffs, but a 25 per cent U.S. tariff on imported autos went into effect at midnight.

Central China’s Hunan Province, known for the towering natural pillars in Zhangjiajie that inspired the movie Avatar, showcased its rich cultural and tourism resources in London on Thursday.

Dozens of government officials and tourism industry representatives from China and Britain attended the promotional event, which aimed to explore potential partnerships in the fields of culture and tourism.

“Tourism is a powerful way to build people-to-people and cultural connections between our two nations,” said Rachael Farrington, head of tourism (government) affairs at VisitBritain, the national tourism agency. She said she was “thrilled” by the prospect of the two countries “working further together” and strengthening ties through “a shared love of travel and culture.”

The event spotlighted the province’s deep-rooted history, stunning landscapes, and signature cuisine – all of which have made lasting impressions on international visitors, including Ben Hardy from Bristol.

Hardy said he “was blown away” by his trip to Hunan in 2019, during which he made friends and experienced China’s high-speed rail, traditional tea-making, Chinese calligraphy, among others.

Hunan governor Mao Weiming emphasized the province’s unique fusion of ancient heritage and vibrant modern culture. He invited attendees to visit Hunan, underscoring the importance of deepening cooperation and exploring fresh opportunities in the tourism market.

Cultural performances by artists from both China and Britain added a dynamic touch to the event, featuring traditional Chinese instruments such as the Changde string alongside the Western cello.

  • MIL-OSI China: Chinese elements thriving in Hollywood movies

Source: China State Council Information Office 3

From character images to storylines; from natural landscapes to cultural symbols; from narrative styles to philosophical ideas, Chinese elements have been prominently featured in Hollywood blockbusters in recent years, dazzling audiences. The use of these elements not only enriches the cinematic content, but also deepens cultural understanding between China and the United States.

Chinese faces: From stereotypes to humanization

A poster for Bruce Lee’s “Fist of Fury.” [Image courtesy of Golden Harvest]

Chinese images have existed in Hollywood films in various forms for over a hundred years. Initially, there were only stereotypical characters and token roles. From nameless extras without lines in the early 20th century to the depiction of Fu Manchu in the early 1980s as malevolent, sinister, deformed, and cruel, these images shaped Americans’ perception of China for decades.

It was not until the emergence of Bruce Lee in the 1970s that this view began to shift, and it took nearly half a century for the portrayal of Chinese characters in Hollywood films to improve.

Films like “Fist of Fury,” “Enter the Dragon,” and “Game of Death” introduced dazzling Chinese-style martial arts to Hollywood, offering Western audiences — accustomed to modern gunfight scenes — a fresh visual experience. “All Chinese people excel at martial arts” became a new stereotype that persisted for nearly 30 years.

By the end of the 20th century, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and other filmmakers pushed Chinese kung fu onto the global stage. Starring in numerous Hollywood action blockbusters, they ingrained a love for martial arts in the hearts of Hollywood filmmakers. Jackie Chan’s Rush Hour series set records for box office earnings with a Chinese actor as the lead; Jet Li carved out a niche with films such as “Lethal Weapon 4,” “The Mummy 3,” and the “Expendables” series. Recently, Donnie Yen starred in Hollywood films “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” and “John Wick 4.” Actresses like Lucy Liu in “Charlie’s Angels” and Michelle Yeoh in “Tomorrow Never Dies” have also portrayed action heroines.

The portrayal of Chinese characters in Hollywood has historically reflected America’s perceptions and idealized visions of China, as well as the desires, struggles, and confidence of the Chinese people. However, the portrayal of them as multi-dimensional individuals with emotions, personalities, and inner conflicts did not receive enough attention or representation.

Entering the 21st century, with China’s growing international influence, Chinese faces in mainstream Hollywood productions are no longer obscured by the stereotype of martial arts. They now appear in positive and active roles. For instance, Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” the first Chinese-language film to win an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, highlights unique female characters breaking free of secular and feudal constraints, pursuing their inner selves, daring to love and hate, and embodying autonomy.

On May 24 of 2023, the film “Sight,” by renowned Hollywood director Andrew Hyatt, was released in Canada and the United States. This film, set against the backdrop of the Chinese immigrant narrative, relates the story of Dr. Ming Wang, a famous Chinese ophthalmologist determined to restore the sight of a blind orphan, illuminating the way in which he transforms experiences of fear, poverty, and prejudice into love and magnanimous care for others. This film not only challenges the limited portrayal of Chinese characters in Hollywood films, but also encourages global audiences to find common ground in a world replete with conflict and polarization, calling for reconciliation and understanding.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Hagerty Gets Commitment from Nominee Perdue to Hold China Accountable for Unfair Treatment of U.S. Diplomats, Financing of Iran’s Terror Regime

    US Senate News:

The Biden Administration failed to protect U.S. diplomats, stop China from financing Iran’s terror regime

WASHINGTON—United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, today received a commitment from former Senator David Perdue (R-GA), nominee to be U.S. Ambassador to China, to hold the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) accountable for unfair treatment of U.S. diplomats, and work to stop the CCP from financing Iran’s terror regime and its proxies.

“When I served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan, one of my top priorities was taking care of my staff and their families,” Hagerty said.

“If I think about what happened during Covid [in China], they put some of our [diplomatic] staff in containers, held them in isolation in moldy hotel rooms,” Hagerty continued. “They took stool samples from them, blood tests for them. I just think it’s totally egregious what took place.”

“If you receive reports of harassment or abuse, will you immediately report those not only to the Trump Administration, but to this committee, so that we can act upon it?” Hagerty asked.

    “Absolutely,” Perdue confirmed.

Hagerty also questioned nominee Perdue about preventing the CCP from funding Iran’s terror regime, which the Biden Administration failed to do.

“As I’ve discussed many times in this committee, the Biden Administration’s non-enforcement of sanctions against Iran has provided that regime with over $100 billion that they have used, therefore, to go out into the Middle East and foment terror and insecurity,” Hagerty said. “President Trump intends to actually enforce sanctions against Iran, and last month, his Administration announced sanctions against the Chinese teapot oil refinery. That refinery was buying and refining hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of Iranian crude oil.”

“Some of this oil was even imported to China by ships linked to the Iranian-backed Houthi regime, the same terrorists that are attacking U.S. personnel, commercial vessels, and certainly our ally Israel,” Hagerty added. “This is yet another example of how Biden’s non-enforcement of sanctions funded the very problems we are spending billions to address right now.”

“Do you commit to conveying to the Chinese government, in the strongest possible terms, that the United States will not tolerate Chinese activities that finance Iran and its terrorist proxy groups, especially those terrorist groups that attacked the United States and its allies?” Hagerty asked.

    “Of course,” Perdue answered.

  • MIL-OSI China: Danish PM slashes US bid for greater influence in Greenland

Source: China State Council Information Office 3

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday emphasized that Greenland should not be taken over by the United States, amid growing geopolitical attention on the Arctic region.

Speaking during her visit to Greenland, Frederiksen said the primary purpose of her trip is to discuss the foreign and security policy situation and how Denmark and Greenland can jointly respond to what she called “a very difficult task.”

“The USA must not take over Greenland. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” she said, adding that a unified message would be delivered in the coming days.

Frederiksen made the remarks alongside outgoing Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede and incoming leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen, amid the leadership transition in Greenland’s autonomous government.

The Danish prime minister also stressed the importance of unity between Greenland, Denmark, and Europe in the face of external pressure. “We need to stand together in this very difficult time Greenland is facing. And when Greenland is in a difficult situation, the Kingdom of Denmark and Europe are also in a difficult situation,” she said.

“It is clear that, with the pressure coming from the Americans on Greenland in terms of sovereignty, borders, and the future, we must stand together,” the prime minister added.

Frederiksen’s visit, which runs from April 2 to 4, comes shortly after U.S. Vice President JD Vance and an American delegation, on last Friday, visited Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland — formerly known as Thule Base — where Vance criticized Denmark for not doing enough for security in the Arctic or for the well-being of the Greenlandic people.

Just hours ahead of the visit by Vance, Greenland announced the formation of a new autonomous government. Four political parties, representing 23 of the 31 seats in Greenland’s parliament, signed a coalition agreement to establish the new government. Jens-Frederik Nielsen, chairman of the Demokraatit (Democratic Party), will serve as prime minister.

Greenland, once a Danish colony, became an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark in 1953. It was granted home rule in 1979, expanding its autonomy, though Denmark retains control over foreign affairs and defense.

  • MIL-OSI China: Iran warns US against ‘aggression’ amid military buildup

Source: China State Council Information Office 3

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Wednesday that Iran would respond “swiftly and decisively” to any violation of its territorial integrity, sovereignty, or national interests, state media reported, amid heightened tensions with the United States.

Araghchi issued the warning during a phone call with Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp, reacting to what he called “unacceptable” military threats recently made by U.S. officials, according to a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

The Iranian minister criticized Washington’s rhetoric as a breach of the United Nations Charter and international law, warning it risked exacerbating regional instability.

He urged all UN member states to uphold the global rule of law and chastised the European Union for failing to condemn the U.S. remarks, which he said endangered international peace.

The call coincided with a U.S. military buildup in the Middle East. The Pentagon said on Tuesday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had bolstered regional capabilities with additional warplanes, though it did not disclose specifics. U.S. media reported anonymously cited officials as saying up to six B-2 stealth bombers had been deployed to Diego Garcia, a strategic Indian Ocean base, in recent days.

The move follows over two weeks of U.S. airstrikes in Yemen and escalating friction with Iran.

Veldkamp, during the call, voiced concern over rising tensions in West Asia and stressed the need for diplomatic solutions. He also urged Iran to help safeguard international shipping in the Red Sea, a vital trade route.

The exchange comes after U.S. President Donald Trump told NBC News on Sunday he would launch “unprecedented military strikes” on Iran if it refused to negotiate over its nuclear program. “If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing like they’ve never seen before,” Trump said, without elaborating on any ongoing talks.

In early March, Trump said he had sent a letter to Iranian leaders via the United Arab Emirates proposing direct discussions on Tehran’s nuclear activities. Iran later said it rejected direct negotiation with Washington but left open the possibility of indirect diplomacy.

The Israeli military on Wednesday ordered civilians in multiple areas of the northern Gaza Strip to evacuate immediately, citing intercepted rocket fire from Palestinian territory.

Military spokesman Avichay Adraee urged residents to “move immediately west to the shelters in Gaza City,” accusing “terrorist organizations” of launching attacks “from among civilians.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Israel’s military said its air defense systems intercepted two rockets fired from northern Gaza. Air raid sirens sounded in communities near the Palestinian enclave, police said.

Israel also tightened up its grip in the southern part of the enclave. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a territorial expansion in southern Gaza, declaring troops were seizing land to establish a new security corridor.

In a video statement, Netanyahu said forces had begun taking control of the area between Khan Younis and Rafah, calling it a “second Philadelphi Corridor” akin to the buffer zone Israel occupies along Gaza’s border with Egypt. “We are slicing up the enclave,” he said, vowing to continue “striking militants and destroying infrastructure.”

Separately, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed airstrikes in Syria targeting military bases in Homs and Hama, as well as infrastructure near Damascus. The IDF said the strikes hit “remaining military capabilities” at the T-4 (Tiyas) Air Base and Hama, along with sites in the Damascus area, calling the operation a response to “threats against Israeli civilians.”

Syrian state news agency SANA reported strikes on an airport in Hama and areas near a scientific research center in Damascus’ Barzeh neighborhood.

Israel resumed large-scale air and ground operations in Gaza on March 18 after weeks of halted food and fuel deliveries. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reported 1,066 Palestinians killed and 2,597 wounded since the renewed offensive, bringing the total death toll to 50,423, with 114,638 injured, since the war began in October 2023.

Source: China State Council Information Office

China firmly opposes the United States’ tariff measures based on the so-called Section 232 investigation, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said Thursday.

He Yadong, the spokesperson, said at a regular press conference that the Section 232 tariff measures have long been adjudicated by the World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement system as in violation of the rule-based multilateral trading system.

By imposing tariffs based on the so-called Section 232 auto investigation report from six years ago, the United States has once again used national security as a pretext for trade protectionism. This action has drawn strong dissatisfaction from many trading partners, according to the spokesperson.

The global automotive industry heavily relies on cross-border production and supply chains, the spokesperson said, adding that artificially severing industrial and supply chain connections between the United States and other regions can neither protect U.S. national security nor benefit its domestic industries. Instead, they only expose the unilateralist, protectionist, and bullyism nature of the U.S. policies.

They evaluated the execution of the Rules of Behavior for Safety of Air and Maritime Encounters and discussed measures to improve maritime military security between the two countries.

The Chinese side emphasized that the safety of naval vessels and aircraft is inseparable from national security. It pointed out that U.S. military ships and aircraft have been conducting reconnaissance, surveys, and high-intensity drills in the sea and air spaces around China, which are prone to cause misunderstandings and miscalculations and jeopardize China’s sovereignty and military security.

The Chinese military will continue to respond to all dangerous provocative actions in accordance with laws and regulations, resolutely safeguarding national territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, according to the Chinese navy.

  • MIL-OSI China: 280,000 people newly displaced in Gaza: UN

Source: China State Council Information Office

An estimated 280,000 Gazans have been newly displaced since the intensification of hostilities over two weeks ago, with some of them forced to move into overcrowded, flea- and mite-infested shelters, according to UN humanitarians on Thursday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said more Israeli displacement orders were issued, again forcing people to flee in search of safety.

“Increasing numbers of people are moving into the remaining shelters which are already overcrowded,” OCHA said. “Infestations of fleas and mites are reported, causing skin rashes and other health issues.”

The office said the aid blockade makes it difficult to tackle the problem due to the lack of materials available in Gaza to improve hygiene conditions.

OCHA said the United Nations and its humanitarian partners continue to respond to the immense needs of the population as the conditions allow. The month-long blockade on the entry of all humanitarian aid and essential goods deprives the population of basic needs. Food assistance inside Gaza is rapidly running out.

However, the office said food security partners have so far been able to deliver more than 900,00 hot meals daily.

OCHA urged immediately reopening the crossings for cargo and humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Marshall Joins Fox Business to Discuss Making President Trump’s Tax Cuts Permanent and Tariffs on Canada

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Kansas Roger Marshall

Washington – U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas) joined Stuart Varney with Varney & Co. on Fox Business today to discuss making President Donald Trump’s tax cuts permanent, implementing ‘No Tax on Tips,’ ‘No Tax on Overtime,’ and ‘No Tax on Social Security,’ and how tariffs on Canada are necessary for our national security.

    [embedded content]

Click HERE or on the image above to watch Senator Marshall’s interview.
    Highlights from the interview include:
On making President Trump’s tax cuts permanent and implementing No Tax on Tips, Overtime, and Social Security:
“President Trump has to lean into this, and he did yesterday. If you’re not following President Trump’s Truth Social tweets, then you’re missing something. He said exactly what we discussed in that meeting – the most transparent president that I’ve ever seen – that we want to make sure that those Trump tax cuts are permanent, that we add tax cuts on wages, on tips, and on Social Security. He wants to extend the debt ceiling as well.
“… We got to get 50 [votes] in the Senate. 218 [votes] over on the House side. Had meetings this morning with House members, getting us all on the same page. But really, this will come down to President Trump’s leadership to get it across the finish line.”
On 4 Republican Senators who voted to undo President Trump’s tariffs on Canada:
“This is a team sport, and those are my team members. I’m deeply disappointed in their votes. But the good thing is that Republicans believe that each one of us have our own vote, that we’re not lemmings.
“I have respect for all four people who voted against this, but I just want to point out to all your listeners, just to remind them, that we’re losing 200 to 300 Americans every day to fentanyl poisoning. A lot of that fentanyl is now being made in labs in Canada, and Canada should be up there smashing those laboratories.
“… President Trump is doing the right thing with Canada. This is a national security issue. Canada can do better. Not to mention counterfeits – A large amount of counterfeits made in China come through that Canada border as well. So, Canada is not innocent.”
    On balancing the budget:
“We need to find a way to balance the budget. What’s more important to me, as we work towards driving inflation down under 3%, that we drive GDP above 3%, and working towards a balanced budget is going to help all of us economically… President Trump was always focused on lowering taxes for hard-working Americans. Again, no tax on tips, on overtime, and Social Security.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Chairman Wicker Leads SASC Hearing on EUCOM, AFRICOM Posture

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Mississippi Roger Wicker

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today chaired a hearing examining the posture of and threats to U.S. European Command (EUCOM) and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).

In his opening statement, Chairman Wicker offered an update on the war in Ukraine, noting that Ukraine continues to heroically resist efforts of Russian subjugation, and that Russia will remain a long-term threat to the United States. Specifically, Chairman Wicker cautioned that reducing our military footprint in Europe would be dangerous for European peace, especially as many of our NATO allies have taken major steps to invest in their defense.

Read Senator Wicker’s hearing opening statement as delivered below.

The hearing will come to order. And today, we welcome General Christopher Cavoli, the Commander of U.S. European Command, and General Michael Langley, the Commander of U.S. Africa Command. We thank them both for being with us today.

First of all, we meet today in the wake of the difficult news that that we have been learning more about over the last few days. We’ve been saddened by the death of four American service members and we now know the names of them all. They passed away in a tragic training accident in Lithuania, and so we recognize them and send our best to their families and friends.

But this morning, we talk about two very important areas of responsibility. The European continent is now entering its third year of war as Russia continues its brutal assault against Ukraine. There’s no question who started this war.

Despite the physical and psychological exhaustion and material constraints from the conflict, the Ukrainian military and people have heroically and successfully continued to resist Russian efforts to subjugate them. The war serves as a brutal reminder that Vladimir Putin has chosen to become an enemy of the West, and to throw away Russia’s future.

The Department of Defense is right to label China as our pacing threat. Nonetheless, Russia and its thousands of varied nuclear weapons continue to pose an existential danger to the United States and to our allies. Moscow’s military aggression sows uncertainty and threatens vital U.S. interests every day, as Europe remains by far our largest trading partner and source of investment in the United States.

The war in Ukraine has exposed the Russian army’s weakness, but it also has shown that Russia can adapt to changing circumstances and can endure heavy costs. The Russian industrial base, aided by China, North Korea, and Iran, has demonstrated its ability to sustain Putin’s army. Russia would likely use any pause in fighting to reconstitute its military.

I say all this to make a simple point: we cannot wish away the Russian threat. Despite Russia’s aggression, there are some who believe now is the time to reduce drastically our military footprint in Europe. This is a viewpoint with which I disagree. I’m troubled that this deeply misguided and dangerous view is held by some midlevel bureaucrats within the Defense Department. They’ve been working to pursue a U.S. retreat from Europe, and they’ve often been doing so without coordinating with the Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council. As I have said, Russia is now mobilized for a permanent war. Withdrawing now would do away with any hope of lasting peace in Europe.

Right now, we have a unique opportunity in Europe. President Trump’s leadership and the Russian threat have jolted Europe awake. Many nations have begun rebuilding their militaries. Our allies on the eastern flank – Poland, the Baltic States, and Romania are all spending much more than we are. The United Kingdom and France are awakening. Even Germany shows signs of stirring.

NATO should be led by the United States, but Europe should shoulder most of the military burden. We can achieve that by combining the right incentives with low-cost assistance from the United States, including a drastically overhauled foreign military sales system. To build that NATO, we must maintain our current posture, which will serve as a bridge to the planned buildup of combat power by our European NATO allies.

After three years of war, we probably should make some posture adjustments, including moving forces east, but we must maintain a strong military posture in Europe overall. l Failing to do so risks tempting Russian adventurism before our European allies have been able to ramp up their forces fully and their capabilities.

The Chinese Communist Party views its competition against the United States as a global project. To China, the continents of Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa are all critical in Xi Jinping’s unprecedented global military expansion. In particular, Beijing has been active on the African continent. In Djibouti, China’s naval base has grown substantially. It’s now capable of hosting China’s most advanced naval vessels and serving as an intelligence collection outpost against American and allied forces in the entire region.

China is also actively pursuing a naval base on Africa’s western coast, the Atlantic coast, which would provide an enduring foothold along the Atlantic Ocean. According to General Langley, this would “change the whole calculus of the geostrategic campaign plans of protecting the American homeland.”

Russia also has designs on the African continent. Its destabilizing strategy is to trade security assistance for access to Africa’s abundant natural resources. This would help fund Vladimir Putin’s malign activities around the world. At the center of Putin’s Africa strategy is Libya which, serves as Russia’s key logistical node and enables its activities across the continent. I look forward to General Langley’s assessment of Africa’s importance to Vladimir Putin’s strategic objectives, as well as his description of what’s being done to counter Russian efforts, particularly in Libya.

We cannot ignore the enduring threat posed by ISIS and al-Qaeda in Africa. Without sustained pressure, these vicious terrorists will reconstitute and continue to threaten America. President Trump was absolutely right to approve strikes against ISIS leadership targets in Somalia in recent weeks.

Our adversaries view their fight against America as a global fight. We see their efforts playing out across Europe and Africa in particular. Now is not the time for an American withdrawal from these theaters. We cannot allow the Chinese Communist Party and its partners in Moscow, Tehran, and Pyongyang to overcome us strategically, or to erode the ability to protect American interests around the world.

So, we have a lot of important topics to talk about today. I look forward to hearing our witnesses address these and many other concerns during this hearing, along with my friend, the Ranking Member whom I recognize right now.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Labor leads in three recent national polls, four weeks from the election

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Adrian Beaumont, Election Analyst (Psephologist) at The Conversation; and Honorary Associate, School of Mathematics and Statistics, The University of Melbourne

The federal election will be held in four weeks. A national YouGov poll, conducted March 28 to April 3 from a sample of 1,622, gave Labor a 51–49 lead, a one-point gain for Labor since the previous non-MRP YouGov poll taken March 14–19.

Primary votes were 35% Coalition (down two), 30% Labor (down one), 13% Greens (steady), 7% One Nation (steady), 2% Trumpet of Patriots (up one), 10% independents (up two) and 3% others (steady). YouGov is using respondent preferences from its last MRP poll. By 2022 election preference flows, Labor would lead by about 52–48.

Anthony Albanese’s net approval rose three points to -6, with 50% dissatisfied and 44% satisfied. Peter Dutton’s net approval slumped ten points to -15, his worst in YouGov’s polls and the first time he’s had a worse net approval than Albanese since June 2024. Albanese led as better PM by 45–38 (45–40 previously).

Since Sunday, we have had leaders’ ratings polls from Newspoll, Resolve, Freshwater, Essential and YouGov. A simple average of the net approval from these five polls has Albanese at net 7.8 and Dutton at net -12.

Here is the poll graph. Labor has led in four of the six polls taken since the budget, with the exceptions a 50–50 tie in Resolve and a Coalition lead by 51–49 in Freshwater. However, Labor’s lead is narrow, except in Morgan.

While the Coalition could regain the lead before the election, Donald Trump’s tariff announcement on Thursday may make it more difficult for the Coalition.

Essential poll: Labor takes slight lead

A national Essential poll, conducted March 26–30 from a sample of 1,144, gave Labor a 48–47 lead by respondent preferences including undecided (a 47–47 tie in mid-March). This was the first Labor lead in Essential since November, with the Coalition either leading narrowly or a tie since.

Primary votes were 34% Coalition (down one), 30% Labor (up one), 12% Greens (steady), 9% One Nation (up one), 2% Trumpet of Patriots (up one), 8% for all Others (down one) and 5% undecided (down one). By 2022 election flows, Labor would lead by about 51–49.

Albanese’s net approval was down three points to -2, with 46% disapproving and 44% approving. Dutton’s was down one point to -6. It’s Dutton’s worst net approval in Essential since October 2023.

By 52–32, voters thought Australia was on the wrong track (48–35 previously). Essential and Morgan have a big lead for wrong track, but Labor is ahead. Voters may be blaming Trump more than Labor.

By 61–29, voters did not think the federal budget would make a meaningful difference on cost of living (64–27 after the May 2024 budget). By 69–31, voters thought the government should prioritise the delivery of services, even if it means running a deficit, over prioritise running a surplus.

Voters were told the Trump administration wanted to pressure Australia into removing some policies using tariffs. By 65–15, voters supported the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and by 64–13 they supported making US companies pay tax on income generated in Australia.

Morgan poll: Labor retains solid lead

A national Morgan poll, conducted March 24–30 from a sample of 1,377, gave Labor a 53–47 lead by headline respondent preferences, unchanged from the March 17–23 poll.

Primary votes were 35% Coalition (down 0.5), 32% Labor (down 1.5), 13% Greens (up 0.5), 5.5% One Nation (up 1.5), 10.5% independents (up 0.5) and 4% others (down 0.5). By 2022 election flows, Labor led by 53.5–46.5, a 0.5-point gain for the Coalition.

By 51.5–32, voters thought Australia was going in the wrong direction (52.5–32.5 previously). Morgan’s consumer confidence index was up 1.1 points to 85.3.

This term, Morgan’s results in general haven’t skewed to Labor relative to other polls, and Labor was behind in Morgan’s polls from November until late February. But Trump’s initial imposition of steel and aluminium tariffs on Australia on March 12 has seen Morgan move much more to Labor than other polls.

Additional Resolve and Newspoll questions and a NSW federal poll

I covered the national Resolve poll for Nine newspapers on March 30. In additional questions, by 60–15 voters thought Trump’s election was bad for Australia (40% bad in November). On threats to Australia in the next few years, 31% thought China the greatest threat, 17% the US, 4% Russia and 38% all equally.

Newspoll has been asking the same questions on the budget since 1988. The Poll Bludger said on Wednesday the March 25 budget was the fourth worst perceived on economic impact (at net -10), but about the middle on personal impact (net -19). The nine-point lead for “no” on would the opposition have delivered a better budget was about par for a Labor government.

A federal DomosAU poll of New South Wales, conducted March 24–26 from a sample of 1,013, gave the Coalition a 51–49 lead (51.4–48.6 to Labor in NSW at the 2022 federal election). Primary votes were 38% Coalition, 30% Labor, 12% Greens, 9% One Nation and 11% for all Others.

Albanese led Dutton as preferred PM by 39–38. By 52–31, respondents did not think Australia was headed in the right direction.

Canadian election and US special elections

The Canadian federal election is on April 28. Polls continue to show the governing centre-left Liberals gaining ground, and they now lead the Conservatives by 43.4–37.6 in the CBC Poll Tracker.

US federal special elections occurred on Tuesday in two safe Republican seats. While Republicans easily retained, there were big swings to the Democrats from the 2024 presidential election results in those districts. A left-wing judge won an election to the Wisconsin state supreme court by 55–45. I covered the Canadian and US developments for The Poll Bludger.

WA election final lower house results

I previously covered Labor winning 46 of the 59 lower house seats at the March 8 Western Australian election. The ABC’s final two-party estimate was a Labor win by 57.2–42.8. While that’s way down from the record 69.7–30.3 in 2021, it’s up from 55.5–44.5 in 2017.

    Final primary votes were 41.4% Labor (down 18.5% since 2021), 28.0% Liberals (up 6.7%), 5.2% Nationals (up 1.2%), 11.1% Greens (up 4.1%), 4.0% One Nation (up 2.8%), 3.2% Australian Christians (up 1.7%), 2.5% Legalise Cannabis (up 2.1%) and 3.3% independents (up 2.5%).

The upper house will be finalised next week. All above the line votes have been included, with only below the line votes to be added. Labor will win 15 of the 37 seats, the Liberals ten, the Nationals two, the Greens four and One Nation, Legalise Cannabis and the Christians one each. That leaves three unclear seats.

ABC election analyst Antony Green’s modelling of the effect of below the line votes suggests Labor’s 16th seat is in doubt and the Liberals won’t win an 11th seat. If this is correct, an independent group and Animal Justice will probably win two seats, with the final seat to be determined by preferences.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Representatives Stevens and Khanna Hold Press Conference to Hold China Accountable and Reduce our Debt

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, U.S. Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI) along with U.S. Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA), hosted a press conference to call on the Trump Administration to sue the Chinese Communist Party for Covid damages.

Last week, a federal judge in Missouri held that the Chinese Communist Party is liable for $24 billion to the state for covering up the severity of COVID in early 2020 and hoarding pandemic related supplies in violation of antitrust law. Now, the Representatives are calling on the Trump Administration to follow suit and pursue similar legal action against the CCP to hold them accountable for damages across the United States. Rather than putting tariffs on Canada and gutting the federal government, the Representatives are calling on the Administration to hold China accountable and then use the damages to rebalance our financial relationship with China, reduce our federal debt, and fund the services Americans rely on.

“The COVID pandemic cost the United States trillions of dollars and 1 million American lives,” said Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI). ”And it’s time to hold the CCP accountable. I’m calling on the Trump Administration to pursue legal action against the CCP for lying and misleading about Covid and hoarding resources. Rather than putting tariffs on our friend Canada, firing veterans, and slashing food and housing assistance, let’s go after our competitor, China, for their role in letting COVID get out of hand and use the damages to reduce our debt and pay for the services Americans rely on.”

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, China was not transparent with the U.S. or the world,” said Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA). “The CCP prevented Americans from getting the PPE they urgently needed by restricting exports. We must hold the CCP accountable and strengthen our domestic industrial base so we are never in that position again. This should be supported by both parties. I am grateful for Congresswoman Stevens’ leadership on this issue.”

“After a federal judge found Communist China liable for billions in damages to the people of Missouri for its misconduct around the COVID pandemic, we need the Trump Administration to toughen up and hold the Chinese government accountable on behalf of all Americans,” said Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA). “Attorney General Bondi and the Justice Department should pursue every legal option to bring the Chinese Communist Party to justice. Making China pay what it’s liable for under U.S. law is about justice and fiscal responsibility.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) Introduces Bipartisan, Bicameral Bill to Help NIST Lead in the Race for the Future

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, U.S. Representatives Haley Stevens (D-MI) and Jay Obernolte (R-CA) introduced the Expanding Partnerships for Innovation and Competitiveness (EPIC) Act. This legislation would establish the Foundation for Standards and Metrology, a non-profit foundation to support the National Institute of Standards and Technology, making the path to commercialization easier for NIST-developed technology. Passing this legislation would make it easier for NIST to utilize public-private partnerships in advancing measurement science foundational to the race for the AI future. U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-DE)Todd Young (R-IN), John Hickenlooper (D-CO), and Deb Fischer (R-NE) introduced companion legislation in the U.S. Senate.

“Now more than ever, our federal science agencies need every tool to drive U.S. technology leadership,” said Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI). “The reintroduction of the EPIC Act ensures that NIST—a vital agency in emerging technology, standards, and manufacturing—has the resources to secure American leadership in the mid-21st century. By establishing the Foundation for Standards and Metrology, this bill will accelerate technology commercialization, strengthen international collaborations, and support NIST’s world-class workforce. I look forward to working with my colleagues to advance this bipartisan, bicameral bill and unleash American innovation.”

“It is vital that America maintains its position as the world leader in science and technology,” said Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-CA). “The creation of the Foundation for Standards and Metrology will assist in ensuring industry, non-profits, and academia receive the resources that they need to establish cutting-edge standards that enhances the economic security and prosperity of the U.S., which is why I’m proud to be a Republican co-lead on this critical legislation.”

“America’s economic strength depends on technological leadership, and NIST has long been an engine of innovation for our country,” said Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE). “The EPIC Act reflects our ongoing commitment to creating a nonprofit foundation that will mobilize resources to support U.S. leadership on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, biotech, and quantum computing. With strong bipartisan support across both chambers, this legislation represents a critical investment in America’s technological future.”

“Maintaining and encouraging research and development in the U.S. is critical to winning the technological race against China and other adversaries,” said Sen. Todd Young (R-IN). “Our bipartisan legislation will support these efforts by establishing an independent foundation to identify and foster innovative public-private partnerships across the country and strengthen the American economy.”

“Whether it’s AI or quantum computing, the United States is pushing the boundaries of technological innovation on all fronts,” said Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-CO). “There are no second chances with technologies this powerful; NIST needs every tool at its disposal to ensure responsible R&D from the start.”

“Our nation’s technological innovation is what keeps us globally competitive,” said Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE). “To stay ahead of our rapidly advancing adversaries, we must invest in emerging technologies and the metrics that underpin them. The EPIC Act is an effective, bipartisan way to help us generate more resources to do so without additional taxpayer costs.”

More than 50 visionaries, science organizations, and technology companies have endorsed this legislation, including four former directors of NIST.

Full text of the legislation can be found here.
