  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: EDB holds kick-off ceremony and experiment proposal design briefing session for Hong Kong Secondary Student Space Station Popular Science Payload and Science Experiment Design Challenge (with photos)

         The Education Bureau (EDB) is organising the Hong Kong Secondary Student Space Station Popular Science Payload and Science Experiment Design Challenge, which encourages student teams to submit scientific experiment design proposals suitable for implementation under space conditions or microgravity. The kick-off ceremony and experiment proposal design briefing session of the challenge were held today (February 25).

         The Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, officiated at the ceremony, which took place at the Education Bureau Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre with representatives from the co-organising, supporting, and partner institutions. The challenge is jointly organised by the EDB, the Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS-TECSU), and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), with the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government (LOCPG) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) serving as a supporting organisation. The Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre, the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, and the Education Convergence are partner organisations.

         The challenge aims to promote aerospace education, deepen students’ understanding of the country’s achievements in the aerospace area, and strengthen their confidence in science and technology. Award-winning and selected proposals have opportunities to be realised and developed into final products, and would be recommended to the space station space mission and Space Station Hong Kong Popular Science Satellite Project, to commence in 2026.

         Speaking at the kick-off ceremony, Dr Choi said that China’s aerospace engineering is a major testament to the country’s technological and comprehensive national strengths, fulfilling the long-held aerospace dreams of the Chinese people. This competition gives students valuable opportunities for aerospace education, training and practice, enabling them to have the opportunity to participate in national aerospace projects, explore aerospace science, and realise their aerospace dreams. She added that the challenge is highly meaningful and students are encouraged to form teams to participate in it.

         She pointed out that, to align with the national direction of invigorating the country through science and education, and in support of Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology (I&T) hub, the EDB continues to step up the promotion of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) education in schools, with an aim to enhance students’ interest and capabilities in scientific research and I&T through diversified support measures.

         Dr Choi expressed her gratitude to the CAS-TECSU, the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the LOCPG in the HKSAR, and HKUST, among other organisations, for their robust support of the challenge, which has enabled its smooth implementation.

         Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Research) of HKUST Professor Penger Tong also officiated at the ceremony. He said he hopes that this science popularisation activity will ignite the passion of Hong Kong’s younger generation for aerospace technology and enable them to make greater contributions to the aerospace endeavours of the country.

         During the briefing session, the project leader of the Space Station Hong Kong Popular Science Satellite from HKUST, Professor Yu Hongyu, delivered a keynote titled “Exploring the Universe, Igniting Dreams – Building Aerospace Aspirations with Hong Kong Secondary Students,” introducing the latest developments in the aerospace technology of the country to teachers and students. Meanwhile, Associate Director of the Space Science and Technology Institute of HKUST Professor Wang Yi and EDB representatives introduced the regulations, rules, and scoring criteria of the challenge.

         Other officiating guests included the Deputy Director of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the LOCPG in the HKSAR, Dr Chen Zhilu; the President of the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre, Mr Hsu Hoi-shan; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, Mr Wong Kam-leung; and the Vice Chairperson of the Education Convergence, Mr Chan Wai-lun. A total of 400 teachers and students from various schools also attended the briefing session.

         Under the Hong Kong Secondary Student Space Station Popular Science Payload and Science Experiment Design Challenge, participating student teams are required to submit science experiment design proposals that are suitable for conducting in a space environment or under microgravity conditions for review by an expert panel. The organising bodies will provide a series of training activities for participating teams, including payload design creation sessions led by aerospace experts, as well as online consultations, payload design reviews and improvement suggestions. An award ceremony and achievement exhibition is expected to be held in late June or July.

         Student teams interested in participating are required to register on the challenge’s website (spacepayload.hkust.edu.hk) after obtaining a nomination from their respective school(s) by March 8.   • MIL-OSI China: Silver economy boosts cultural, elderly tourism development

    HEFEI, Feb. 25 — Wu Zenghe, who has been in the bed-and-breakfast (B&B) business for over a decade, feels that the enthusiasm for cultural travel consumption among China’s elderly has been constantly rising in recent years.

    His B&B, especially designed for the elderly and located in the Huizhou ancient town, a popular tourist destination in Shexian County, east China’s Anhui Province, has only been operating for a year but has already attracted groups of silver-haired visitors from first-tier cities.

    As one of the first batch of B&Bs to combine local history, beautiful scenery and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the county, Wu’s B&B regularly invites doctors to provide health management services, including the likes of medical lectures and TCM physiotherapy, while also providing tourism services tailored to suit the elderly, such as slow-paced travel plans.

    “Travel for health is about to see an influx of those born in the 1960s and 1970s, who have the ability and willingness to spend on health management and better tourism experiences,” he said.

    The silver economy is providing huge consumption energy in the cultural tourism market. Statistics from the China Tourism Academy showed that the number of tourist trips made by those aged 60 and above had reached 1.16 billion in 2023 — accounting for 20.6 percent of China’s total domestic tourists. It is estimated that by 2028, the value of the silver-haired tourism market will reach about 2.7 trillion yuan (roughly 376 billion U.S. dollars), revealing strong growth momentum.

    Earlier this month, nine Chinese government agencies and state-owned enterprises, including the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, unveiled an action plan to expand and improve senior-friendly tourism train services, in the latest bid to create more inclusive and enjoyable travel experiences for the elderly.

    It plans to create a nationwide network of specialized trains catering to older travelers by 2027 — featuring over 100 designed routes and 2,500 scheduled trips annually.

    According to a blue paper on China’s silver economy, the sector is currently valued at 7 trillion yuan, with tourism being a key growth area.

    Elderly adults in China had amassed wealth totaling 78.4 trillion yuan by 2023, according to the China National Committee on Ageing. The value of the silver economy is projected to reach 30 trillion yuan by 2035.

    The growing market size of the silver-haired group has also promoted upgrading of the accommodation industry. For example, hotels in many places in China have launched innovations such as silent floors and non-slip bathrooms.

    According to H World Group, one of China’s largest hotel operators, rooms that are equipped with elderly-friendly facilities proved popular last year — with an occupancy rate of more than 90 percent in 2024.

    “China’s rural areas offer good scenery and environments, and these benefits are now coupled with improving accommodation conditions as well as medical services. We both feel very comfortable in body and mind,” said Sun Tian, a tourist from Shanghai, adding that he and his wife meet up with old friends for a stay in a health resort in the Yangtze River Delta region for a period each year, while they often shop online for agricultural products from the health resort area after returning to Shanghai.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Briefing – China’s increasing presence in Latin America: Implications for the European Union – 25-02-2025

    Within just two decades, China has transformed from an insignificant player to a dominant force in Latin America, alongside the United States (US) and the European Union (EU). Predictions suggest that by 2035, China may even overtake the US as Latin America’s most important trading partner. China has been South America’s top trading partner for quite some time. The region holds strategic importance for the future of the global economy due to its abundance of resources and critical raw materials, such as lithium and copper. In parallel to maintaining economic ties with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), China is also enhancing its political relationship with the region, primarily through the China-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) forum. In 2018, China extended its vast global infrastructure development strategy – the Belt and Road Initiative – to Latin America. A recent example of Chinese strategic investment in the region is the Chancay megaport in Peru, which could be a game changer in Latin American logistics, as it will reroute trade between Latin America and Asia, bypassing the Atlantic and the Panama Canal. Recent actions by the Trump administration aimed at countering China’s influence in LAC may inadvertently strengthen China’s position in the region even further, as was seen during the first Trump administration. For the EU, which is in urgent need of a diversified supply of critical raw materials to navigate the clean and digital transition of its economy, the LAC region is now more strategically important than ever. The EU’s envisaged partnership agreement with Mercosur, the South American trading block, will test the EU’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Latin America through the conclusion of this agreement. The European Parliament is expected to vote on the proposed agreement during its current legislative term.

  • MIL-OSI Global: The ‘lab-leak origin’ of Covid-19. Fact or fiction?

    In a January 24 interview with the far-right-wing outlet Breitbart News, newly appointed CIA director John Ratcliffe stated that assessing intelligence on a potential Wuhan lab leak was a top priority. The following day, The New York Times reported that the agency had shifted from an undecided stance to favoring a possible Chinese lab leak, albeit with a “low confidence” rating–the lowest on a three-tier scale (low, medium, high)–indicating the evidence remains inconclusive.

    The CIA has thus joined the ranks of the FBI and the Department of Energy (DOE), which has scientific jurisdiction, in supporting the possibility of a laboratory-related incident.

    Findings from a 2023 reportshow that, among the U.S. agencies that have investigated the pandemic’s origins, one remains undecided, while four others, along with the National Intelligence Council, support the natural origin hypothesis.

    What does ‘laboratory origin’ really mean?

    According to The New York Times, the CIA’s revised assessment is based not on new evidence, but on a reinterpretation of existing data. However, the reasoning behind its reassessment, along with the supporting data, has not been made public, making it impossible to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the agency’s conclusions.

    Adding to the complexity, “laboratory origin” is an umbrella term encompassing multiple, sometimes contradictory, scenarios. Confirming CNN’s 2023 report on the Department of Energy’s revised stance, The New York Times notes that while the DOE identifies the Wuhan Center for Disease Control (WCDC) as the outbreak’s likely source, the FBI attributes it to a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). As of now, the CIA has not disclosed which scenario it deems most plausible.

    Though WCDC is not an actual research laboratory, some of its employees were participating in wildlife sampling campaigns at the time of the outbreak. In late 2019, WCDC moved to a location close to the Huanan Market. A theory implicating the WCDC confirms evidence that the earliest detected cases are epidemiologically and geographically linked to the market, suggesting the virus emerged naturally.

    In contrast, the WIV is a research institute operating across two campuses–one located 12 kilometers from the market and the other, which houses the P4 laboratory, 27 kilometers away. Scenarios implicating the WIV generally posit that “gain-of-function” coronavirus experiments–intended to enhance a virus’s transmissibility or virulence–were conducted under unsafe biosecurity conditions. The WIV is a biosafety level 2 facility, two levels below the high-security P4 standard.

    The Covid-19 virus originated from a single source. If it did escape from a Chinese laboratory, it could not have simultaneously leaked from two separate labs conducting different types of research.

    The lab leak scenario, supported by mutually incompatible hypotheses, doesn’t hold up–even before considering theories that the virus was engineered in a U.S. lab and then sent to Wuhan.

    Beyond determining the virus’s origin, it is equally important to identify the exact nature of the virus–further complicating the lab-accident hypothesis. Was it a natural occurring virus contracted during a sampling campaign? A laboratory-cultivated virus transferred to cells or animals? Or even a directly genetically modified virus?

    Again, SARS-CoV-2 cannot be both a natural virus and the result of lab experiments. Arguments built on conflicting premises do little to strengthen the case for a research-related incident.

    No evidence of a laboratory-related incident

    The lab-incident hypothesis would carry much more weight if definitive proof emerged that, by late December 2019, a Wuhan laboratory possessed a progenitor of SARS-CoV-2–meaning a virus identical or nearly identical to SARS-CoV-2.

    In the case of the 2007 foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in southern England, for example, virus sequencing quickly led investigators to nearby high-security laboratories conducting research on a similar virus. The inquiry ultimately traced the outbreak to faulty effluent pipes at the facilities.

    To date, no virus has been identified that could be used in a laboratory as a direct progenitor of SARS-CoV-2. If the virus did emerge from a research-related incident, two possibilities remain: it was either an uncharacterized natural virus, unknown even to researchers, or it was a previously characterized virus that had not been disclosed–either because it was recently identified or part of a classified program–and is still being kept under wraps by scientists in Wuhan.

    Especially if SARS-CoV-2 were the result of genetic engineering. A lab-modified virus would mean its genetic sequence was known before the pandemic and accessible to researchers. However, by 2021, the U.S. intelligence community had determined that researchers at the WIV had no prior knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 before the outbreak. While absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, concrete data has yet to emerge supporting the hypothesis of laboratory modification.

    Theories about a potential lab outbreak have also fueled speculation about external involvement, both within China and abroad. A U.S. Senate committee report put forward an all-Chinese scenario, citing the suspicious 2020 death of a Beijing-based researcher working on a new vaccine.

    Other theories center on the NGO EcoHealth Alliance, which collaborated with WIV to collect and study natural coronavirus strains before its funding was abruptly cut off at Donald Trump’s request in Spring 2020. The organization’s president has since been banned from federal funding for five years, facing criticism over oversight issues, including delayed reporting of an experiment on a chimeric coronavirus and failure to provide WIV’s laboratory notebooks.

    Among the most high-profile figures implicated in U.S.-based complicity theories is Anthony Fauci, the former White House Covid advisor and head of the agency that funded the EcoHealth Alliance/WIV collaboration. But allegations against Fauci go far beyond simply approving research grants. One narrative claims he deliberately suppressed discussions about the pandemic’s point of origin, pressuring researchers to alter their conclusions in exchange for funding. No evidence has surfaced to support this claim.

    Anticipating potential retribution from his successor and the Republican Party, Former President Joe Biden preemptively granted Fauci a presidential pardon. However, newly elected President Donald Trump has since revoked Fauci’s personal security detail, and Republican Senator Rand Paul has vowed to continue efforts to prosecute him.

    The natural-origin theory faces hurdles as well

    Since these competing lab leak theories have emerged from a lack of conclusive evidence anything is possible. However, available data suggest the virus may have originated naturally from animals sold at the Huanan Market.

    Multiple sources, including research from Chinese institutions, support this hypothesis: two early SARS-CoV-2 strains were detected at the market, with the earliest cases reported in homes within the vicinity, even for patients without direct epidemiological links to it, and findings from the Chinese Center for Disease Control (CCDC) indicate that raccoon dogs and masked palm civets–species implicated in earlier SARS outbreaks–were present in the market’s southwest corner, where traces of SARS-CoV-2 were frequently detected.

    However, by the time the China CDC team arrived at the Huanan Market–just hours after its closure for sample collection–raccoon dogs and civets were no longer present. As a result, no direct traces of infection were detected, and the definitive evidence some are hoping for may never be uncovered.

    But even if such proof were to emerge, it’s unlikely to settle the debate. Additional confirmation would be needed to show that the contamination originated in the animals rather than being a secondary infection transmitted by humans. Moreover, skeptics could argue that the animals themselves came from a laboratory. In other words, the controversy is far from over.

    For now, with the new Trump administration focused on finding a culprit, the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic will remain in the spotlight. Senator Rand Paul, now chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC), has made the issue his favorite hobbyhorse.

    While declassifying additional information from the U.S. intelligence community could help clarify competing conclusions, there are concerns that the administration’s efforts may unfairly target researchers, potentially resulting in more innocent victims.

  • MIL-OSI China: Boat collision in central China leaves 2 dead, several missing

    Two people have died and a number of others remain missing after a passenger boat collided with an oil waste recovery vessel in central China’s Hunan Province on Tuesday morning, local authorities said.
    The incident occurred around 10 a.m. on the Yuanshui River in Qinglang Township, Yuanling County. A preliminary estimate indicated that 12 people were believed to have been aboard the passenger boat at the time of the crash, according to county officials.
    Rescue workers have rescued three survivors, with all three hospitalized in stable condition. Two people have been confirmed dead, while search efforts continue for those still missing.

      BEIRUT, Feb. 25 — Recently, the 23rd Chinese peacekeeping multi-role engineering company to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) passed the military capability assessment organized by the UNIFIL with excellent performance.

      The UNIFIL assessment team conducted an overall assessment on the combat-readiness and mission-performing capabilities of the Chinese peacekeepers through debriefing, material reviewing, field inspection and random inquiry.

  • MIL-OSI China: New air route links China’s Xinjiang, Kuala Lumpur

    URUMQI, Feb. 25 — A new air route linking Urumqi, capital of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia, via the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, has been launched.

    The maiden flight left Urumqi Diwopu International Airport on Monday morning, marking the first regular passenger service from Xinjiang to Kuala Lumpur, according to the airport.

    The new route reduces the one-way travel time from Urumqi to Kuala Lumpur to eight hours, offering passengers a more diverse, convenient and efficient travel option, and further boosting cultural and people-to-people exchanges and economic ties between China and Malaysia, said the airport.

    To date, Urumqi Diwopu International Airport has international passenger routes to 23 regions in 20 countries, including Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

    Xinjiang’s tourism revenue jumped by 21 percent to over 359 billion yuan (about 50.05 billion U.S. dollars) last year with more than 300 million tourist visits received.

    Since November 2023, China has continuously adjusted and optimized its visa-free transit policy to boost openness and people-to-people exchanges. Last year, over 20.1 million foreign visitors entered China under the visa exemption policy, marking a year-on-year increase of 113.5 percent in eligible transit visa-exemption travelers.

  • MIL-OSI China: Robots enhance water rescue efforts in China’s coastal regions

    HAIKOU, Feb. 25 — High-tech devices, including robots and drones, recently captured widespread attention for their successful role in rescuing tourists from the water at a popular holiday destination in Hainan Province.

    These advanced technologies were deployed for the first time by the local emergency management department in a bay in the city of Wanning, during the Spring Festival holiday. The devices were joined in rescue efforts by a local branch of the Blue Sky Rescue (BSR) team, a Chinese civil relief squad composed of surfing instructors, diving enthusiasts, and food delivery workers.

    Among the equipment was a U-shaped water rescue robot, an intelligent device designed to swiftly reach drowning victims or deliver supplies with high precision.

    “Lifeboats or jet skis can sustain damage in rough water, while rescuers can experience physical exhaustion or even risk of drowning,” said Liu Jiao, a member of the BSR.

    The U-shaped robot addresses these challenges, offering a safer and more efficient solution. Operated remotely from shore, the compact and flexible robot can navigate difficult conditions, significantly reducing risks for rescuers, Liu added.

    This robot can be used in various environments, such as pools, reservoirs, and rivers.

    Beyond Hainan, the robot is already in use in some other coastal regions, including Fujian and Guangdong.

    China has been vigorously promoting innovation in robotics, integrating these technologies into various sectors such as agriculture, industry, and specialized services. Efforts are underway to accelerate the adoption of robots, improving safety and efficiency across multiple sectors.

    “At present, when the Ukraine issue is at a critical juncture for a negotiated settlement, we expect the international community to create a favorable atmosphere for promoting a political solution to the crisis,” Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, told a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine.

    China expects the United Nations and the Security Council to play a constructive role in forging consensus for peace among member states, and the actions of the council to further the call for peace by promoting peace talks, he said after voting on a draft resolution on Ukraine.

    “The ultimate resolution of any conflict lies at the negotiation table,” he said. “As we speak, the call for a negotiated settlement of the Ukraine issue is constantly on the rise, and the window for peace is opening.”

    Although the parties’ positions may not be aligned, dialogue is still better than confrontation, and talks are better than fights, the envoy said, adding that China supports all efforts dedicated to peace, and supports the U.S.-Russia agreement to start peace talks.

    “China expects all parties and stakeholders to participate in the peace talks at an appropriate time, so as to find a just and lasting solution that takes into account each other’s concerns and to reach a binding peace agreement acceptable to all parties concerned,” he said.

    Fu urged Europe to play its part for peace, to jointly address the root causes of the crisis, and to find a balanced, effective and sustainable security framework, so as to achieve long-term security and stability on the European continent.

    China stands ready to continue to play a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis at the request of the parties concerned, taking into consideration the concerns of the international community, especially those of the Global South, he said.

    The Security Council on Monday adopted a U.S.-drafted resolution appealing for a swift end to the conflict and urging a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. The resolution received 10 votes in favor, none against, and five abstentions from France, Britain, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia.

    On 1 February 2025, US President Donald Trump signed three executive orders to impose tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. In retaliation, Canada announced it would impose a 25% tariff on CAD155 billion ($117.8 billion) worth of US goods. Moreover, Trump increased the US tariff rate on steel and aluminum to 25% on 10 February, removing country-specific exceptions and quota arrangements. Consequently, North American region insurers may see increased claims costs in 2025 across various insurance lines, potentially affecting their profitability, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

    After discussions between the US President and leaders from Mexico and Canada, the proposed tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico and the retaliatory tariff are delayed by a month. In its retaliation, Canada specified that tariffs on CAD30 billion ($22.8 billion) would take effect immediately from 4 February 2025, and tariffs on the remaining CAD125 billion ($95 billion) would follow within 21 days. Set to take effect on 12 March 2025, the US tariffs will impact imports of millions of tons of steel and aluminum, affecting goods previously duty-free from countries like Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea.

    Manogna Vangari, Insurance Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Upon implementation, high tariffs will significantly affect trade throughout North America, not solely due to the substantial volume of commerce but also owing to the critical role of supply chains, which account for more than half of intra-regional trade, as per GlobalData’s estimates.

    “Furthermore, the Trump administration plans to raise tariffs on oil and gas in March 2025. This is expected to have a detrimental impact on the insurance industry, manifested by reduced economic activity and consumer spending. However, it is expected that Canada, Mexico, and China will soon contest these tariffs by initiating a legal case with the World Trade Organization (WTO).”

    The North America region’s property and motor insurance claims are projected to represent a 13.4% and 16.1% share of total general insurance claims in 2025. However, the full and actual implementation of the tariff rates may push actual claims even higher. Consequently, the profitability of North America’s general insurance sector is expected to be notably affected, with claims projected to grow at a rate of 6.9% in 2025 from 3.3% in 2024.

    According to GlobalData’s Global Insurance Database, North America’s general insurance industry is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7% over 2025–29, from $2.7 trillion in 2025 to $3.5 trillion in 2029, in terms of written premiums.

    Vangari continues: “Tariffs on imported materials like building supplies, car parts, and electronics will increase the cost of vehicle repairs and property reconstruction after disasters, causing insurers to pay more claims across the region. Insurance companies may raise premiums for property and motor policies.”

    Around 90% of auto exports from Mexico and Canada go to the US, according to the Mexican and Canadian Automotive Manufacturers’ Associations. High tariffs and supply chain delays will increase repair times, causing higher costs for living arrangements and rental vehicles, and protracted business interruptions. This could impact the competitiveness of the North American production and manufacturing industry, and the insurance industry.

    Vangari concludes: “A global trade war is a looming concern. If tariffs escalate or supply chains get tangled, economic growth could take a hit, which would change the fundamental risk pool for insurers across North America’s region. As broader tariffs on Canada and Mexico remain on hold, businesses and insurance companies must prepare for potential adverse outcomes across the region in the next few years.”

    Director Huo Meng on Saturday became the first Chinese mainland filmmaker to win the Silver Bear for best director at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, receiving the honor for his film “Living the Land.”

    The film, produced by Shanghai Film Group and written and directed by Huo, captures daily life in 1990s north China through documentary-like cinematography and the authentic use of Henan province’s local dialect. The film stars Wang Shang, Zhang Chuwen and Zhang Yanrong, with renowned Chinese actor Yao Chen as executive producer.

    The story follows 10-year-old Xu Chuang, who lives with his grandmother and the Li family after his parents move to the city. Through scenes of spring plowing, autumn harvests, weddings and funerals, the film captures rural life and human relationships. Shot in a warm realist style, it depicts Xu’s family — hardworking, resilient and hopeful — as they strive for a better life, witnessing quiet yet profound changes in their community as they navigate tradition and modernity.

    In his acceptance speech, Huo emphasized filmmaking’s collaborative nature. “I am grateful to the actors for portraying a group of hardworking, kind-hearted and resilient ordinary people. The most captivating aspect of film is its ability to connect the emotions of people from different places,” he said.

    The film has received critical acclaim since its Feb. 14 premiere at the festival. The Hollywood Reporter critic Jordan Mintzer stated that it “immerses the viewer in a remote Chinese agricultural community with all the precision and beauty of an accomplished artist,” and praised Huo as “a master at embedding the drama within a broader fresco of social and economic transformation.” In a review for Variety, Guy Lodge wrote, “Though it’s gently paced and narratively diffuse, ‘Living the Land’ is never dull, thanks to a wealth of incident and the complexity of relationships in Huo’s extended family portrait.”

    “I spent my childhood in a rural village,” the director said at the premiere. “For thousands of years, China’s countryside has shaped deeply moving qualities in the Chinese people, such as diligence, kindness and resilience.”

    The film, shot over a year, follows its characters through all four seasons. “It creates a realm where we can experience the way of life and the intense emotional bonds, while also witnessing the possibility of change,” Huo shared.

    “Living the Land” is Huo’s third feature film, and he is the first Chinese filmmaker born in the 1980s to win a Silver Bear. An associate professor at the Shanghai Film Academy of Shanghai University, Huo previously won directorial awards for “Crossing the Border-Zhaoguan.” The Shanghai International Film Festival selected him last year for its SIFF YOUNG program, which supports emerging filmmakers with domestic and international film industry resources.

    The 75th Berlin International Film Festival, also known as the “Berlinale,” ran from Feb. 13 to 23. Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud won the Golden Bear for best film with “Dreams,” while Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Mascaro’s “The Blue Trail” received the grand jury prize. U.S. director Todd Haynes led the main competition jury. Nineteen films competed in the main competition, including two Chinese entries — the other being “Girls on Wire” by director Vivian Qu.

    Hong Kong card payments market to surpass $185 billion in 2025, forecasts GlobalData

    The card payment market in Hong Kong is poised to register 11.0% growth in 2025, reaching HKD1.5 trillion ($186.5 billion), driven by rising consumer spending and growing consumer preference for electronic payments, reveals GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

    GlobalData’s latest report, “Hong Kong (China SAR) Cards and Payments: Opportunities and Risks to 2028,” reveals that card payment value in Hong Kong registered a growth of 15.7% in 2023, driven by the rise in consumer spending. The value grew further to register an estimated growth of 12.2% in 2024 to reach HKD1.3 trillion ($168.1 billion).

    Shivani Gupta, Senior Banking and Payments Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Cash payments are on the decline in Hong Kong as electronic methods increasingly gain popularity, supported by a high adult population, rising consumer awareness of electronic payments and a well-established payment infrastructure. This shift in consumer behavior signals a move away from conventional payment approaches to embrace digital alternatives.”

    Among the card types, credit and charge cards accounted for 77.7% share of the overall card payment value in 2024. This is mainly due to the value-added benefits associated with these cards, such as flexible payment options and reward programs.

    Debit cards, on the other hand, account for the remaining 22.3% share. Although debit cards are traditionally preferred for cash withdrawals, they are now increasingly being used for payments as well, especially low-to-medium value transactions. Consumers are embracing debit cards, with the domestic scheme Electronic Payment Service (EPS) driving growth. EPS cards are accepted at over 30,000 merchant locations in Hong Kong and Macau.

    Gupta adds: “Widespread adoption and usage of contactless cards are contributing to overall card payments usage. Consumers and merchants in Hong Kong are increasingly becoming aware of the benefits of contactless cards, leading to their increased usage. According to GlobalData’s 2024 Financial Services Consumer Survey*, over 56% of the respondents in Hong Kong indicated having access to a contactless card and used it for payments.”

    The rising usage of contactless payments for public transport payments is also contributing to card payments growth. For instance, in August 2024, Mastercard announced its integration into the mass transit railway system MTR Corporation’s contactless credit and debit card payment services. This allows Mastercard cardholders to use their contactless payment cards at MTR entry and exit gates when traveling on the MTR heavy rail network, excluding the Airport Express.

    Gupta concludes: “The upward trajectory of Hong Kong’s card payments market is expected to persist in the coming years, driven by the convenience of electronic payments, widespread payment infrastructure, and the increased accessibility of contactless technology. The card payments market is anticipated to increase at a CAGR of 7.3% between 2025 and 2029 to reach HKD1.9 trillion ($247.5 billion) in 2029.”

    China will expand the scope of subsidies for replacing old and worn-out agricultural machinery and raise subsidy levels in 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said Tuesday.

    The existing nine types of agricultural machinery will be joined by six new categories in the subsidy program, namely, rice seedling-throwing machines, farmland monitoring terminals, plant protection drones, grain dryers (drying machines), color sorters and flour mills, the ministry said in a statement on its website.

    China will continue to increase the subsidy standards for certain agricultural machinery this year. For example, the maximum subsidy for replacing a cotton picker will be raised from 60,000 yuan (about 8,365 U.S. dollars) to 80,000 yuan per unit, according to the statement jointly issued by the ministry and three other central government authorities.

    The statement also emphasized that provinces must effectively utilize ultra-long special treasury bonds allocated to support the scrapping and updating of agricultural machinery, and be vigilant of fraudulent activities related to subsidy claims.

    As the country’s energy sector is shifting toward greater market-driven dynamics, private companies will be further encouraged to invest in energy development, utilization and infrastructure construction, according to China’s top energy authority.

    The government will continue promoting private sector involvement in major energy projects this year, including nuclear power, energy storage and smart grids, to deliver a more efficient and smooth operation of the market, according to the National Energy Administration.

    The administration will continue encouraging private enterprises to participate in the nuclear power industry’s supply chain and to invest in nuclear power projects. Furthermore, the government will continue to support private companies in various forms of oil and gas exploration, power infrastructure construction and other projects, it said.

    There will be an emphasis on supporting private businesses to invest in and build new technologies such as new energy storage, smart microgrids and innovative business models.

    Private companies are expected to spur more technological innovation and increased efficiency within the energy sector, enhancing its overall competitiveness and sustainability, said Lin Boqiang, head of the China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy at Xiamen University.

    The energy sector requires substantial long-term investment for expansion, especially in emerging fields such as new energy storage and smart grids, he said.

    China vows to further deepen its energy market reform this year, working to improve mechanisms where energy prices are mainly determined by the market, legally regulate the energy market order and strengthen the construction of a unified national market.

    Zhu Gongshan, chairman of GCL (Group) Holdings Co Ltd, China’s largest private power conglomerate, said a more market-driven energy sector could lead to increased efficiency in the allocation of resources.

    China’s solar power sector, from upstream silicon production to downstream photovoltaic power station construction, exemplifies the growing role of China’s private economy in energy transformation, he said.

    To deepen market-oriented price reforms of new energies, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration issued a notice recently to promote the integration of new energy sources like wind and solar power into the electricity market.

    This means that around 80 percent of China’s power consumption and generation will be transacted through competitive markets, significantly up from the 61 percent traded in 2024, according to Deng Simeng, a senior analyst for renewables and power research at global consultancy Rystad Energy.

    GCL Group said the company is very optimistic about the virtual power plant market in China, which, according to estimates by Huatai Securities, is projected to reach 10.2 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) this year and further grow to over 100 billion yuan by 2030.

    A virtual power plant is a network of decentralized energy resources that are controlled via software to function as a single, flexible power source. It allows these dispersed resources to operate in a way that mimics the behavior of a traditional power plant, providing electricity to the grid or responding to changes in demand.

    Amid the sluggish recovery of Taiwan’s inbound tourism in the post-epidemic era and the soaring tourism deficit, people from various sectors in Taiwan, particularly the tourism industry, have called on local authorities to resume the entry of mainland travelers to the island as soon as possible.

    According to data released by Taiwan’s transport authorities on Monday, the island saw approximately 7.86 million inbound travelers last year, reaching only 60 percent of pre-epidemic levels and falling significantly short of the 10 million target set by the authorities.

    Meanwhile, the number of outbound travelers in 2024 reached 16.85 million. The nearly nine-million-people gap between inbound and outbound tourists resulted in a trade deficit exceeding 20 billion U.S. dollars for the industry, according to the data.

    “While the increase of outbound trips made by Taiwan travelers is relevant to the huge tourism deficit last year, a major reason is that the entry of mainland visitors to Taiwan has yet to be resumed,” said Ringo Lee, chairman of the Taipei-based High Quality of Travel Association.

    Noting that mainland tourists constituted the bulk of Taiwan’s inbound tourism revenue in the pre-epidemic era, Lee said it is of great importance to restore the lost part of the market as soon as possible.

    In 2020, Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities banned mainland residents from visiting Taiwan under the pretext of COVID-19, and have yet to lift the ban on group tours to the mainland, much to the discontent of residents on both sides of the Strait. In June 2024, the DPP authorities further issued a level-orange alert for Taiwan travelers to the mainland.

    Last month, the mainland announced that group tour services to Taiwan would soon resume for residents of Fujian Province and Shanghai Municipality — two regions with strong ties to Taiwan– after nearly five years of disruption.

    However, in stark contrast to the mainland’s friendly gesture, Taiwan authorities earlier this month cited unconvincing pretexts to block the resumption of cross-Strait tourism between the two localities of the mainland and Taiwan.

    Interviewees from sectors in Taiwan, including tourism, transportation and retail, told Xinhua that Taiwan authorities have constantly paid lip service to promoting the development of tourism, and they went to great lengths to obstruct mainland tourists from visiting Taiwan.

    The interviewees also urged Taiwan authorities to swiftly resume the entry of mainland tourists in line with public opinion.

    Saipan – SHAWN N. ANDERSON, United States Attorney for the Districts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, announced that Kangle Jiang, age 22, citizen of the People’s Republic of China, was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment by the District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands for Conspiracy to Transport Illegal Aliens, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(1)(A)(ii) and (v)(I) and Conspiracy to Defraud the United States, in violation of 18 § U.S.C. 37.  The court also ordered one year of supervised release, 50 hours of community service, and a $100 special assessment fee.

    On December 9, 2024, Kangle Jiang conspired with a man in Saipan to transport himself and seven other Chinese nationals to the Territory of Guam by boat. They intended to avoid detection by law enforcement to further their unlawful presence in the United States. Jiang, who had only been in the CNMI since October 31, 2024, paid $6,000 for the illegal trip to Guam.  As the boat approached the shore, the boat’s operators pushed and threatened the passengers to jump into the water, even though some of them could not swim.  Most of the passengers were later encountered in or near sensitive military installations.

    “Combatting unlawful immigration is the top priority of the Department of Justice,” stated United States Attorney Anderson.  “The defendant took advantage of unique federal immigration regulations that permit certain foreign nationals to visit the CNMI as tourists.  Any local economic benefits from these provisions are lost when those persons later attempt to unlawfully enter another part of the United States.  The defendant and his co-conspirators also placed themselves and others at great risk of personal harm due to the nature of their travel at sea.  Our enforcement efforts will continue to focus on safety, deterrence, and maintaining the integrity of our immigration system in the Western Pacific.”

  • MIL-OSI China: China conducts 300-bln-yuan MLF operation to sustain banking liquidity

    BEIJING, Feb. 25 — China’s central bank on Tuesday conducted a 300-billion-yuan (about 41.83 billion U.S. dollars) medium-term lending facility (MLF) operation to maintain ample liquidity in the country’s banking system.

    The MLF operation features a one-year maturity period and an interest rate of 2 percent, unchanged from the rate of the previous operation conducted last month, according to a statement on the website of the People’s Bank of China.

    After the latest operation, the outstanding MLF balance stood at 4.09 trillion yuan.

    Tuesday’s operation was a scaled-down rollover, as a total of 500 billion yuan of MLF will mature this month.

    The central bank conducted 1.7 trillion yuan of outright reverse repos in January, which was equivalent to releasing a degree of medium-term liquidity in advance, said Wang Qing, chief macro analyst at Golden Credit Rating.

    At present, medium-term liquidity in the market is kept abundant to support banks in increasing credit supply, facilitate government bond issuance, and stabilize market expectations, the analyst noted.

    China has called on the international community to actively engage in the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Initiative, co-launched by China, stressing the importance of joint efforts to uphold humanitarian principles and protect civilians in conflict zones.

    Chen Xu, China’s permanent representative to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, attended a high-level event to galvanize political commitment to IHL. He introduced the IHL Initiative and outlined China’s position on humanitarian issues.

    Noting that the current global humanitarian crisis remains dire, Chen emphasized that promoting effective compliance with IHL is “a pressing challenge of our time” that must be addressed and it is also the concern that served as a driving force behind the initiative’s launch. He stated that the IHL Initiative aims to raise awareness of IHL among the international community, particularly among parties to armed conflicts.

    He stressed that the international community should foster the spirit of humanity, fraternity, and devotion while ensuring the universal and uniform application of IHL, resolutely rejecting double standards and selective application. He added that the fundamental principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence must be upheld to avoid the politicization of humanitarian issues, and that support for international humanitarian organizations is essential to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers.

    Chen invited all parties to participate in the IHL Initiative and actively contribute to its various workstreams based on their expertise. He also emphasized that traditional Chinese values – such as “a benevolent man loves others” and “do not impose on others what you do not want others to do to you” – embody a deeply rooted humanitarian spirit.

    He said China will remain an active supporter, participant, and contributor to the international humanitarian cause, upholding its vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind and implementing the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.

    Chen stressed that China remains committed to peace talks, promoting peace and hope in conflict zones, continuing its assistance to Africa and other developing countries, supporting humanitarian organizations to the best of its ability, and alleviating the suffering of people in conflict zones.

    At the popular science marathon “Darwin Week” junior researcher of the A. A. Trofimuk Institute of Oil and Gas Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, engineer of the scientific and educational center “Evolution of the Earth” Faculty of Geology and Geography of Novosibirsk State University, paleontologist Vsevolod Efremenko told which dinosaurs lived in Chukotka and Sakhalin, where to look for their remains and how representatives of the paleofauna adapted to life beyond the Arctic Circle. At present, it is reliably known that 12 species of dinosaurs lived in Siberia. Scientists have discovered about 30 places in Russia where their remains have been preserved to this day, but this does not mean that dinosaurs lived only in those places. It is possible that they lived everywhere, but, unfortunately, bones and teeth, and even more rarely – imprints of feathers and fur, are preserved only in certain conditions.

    — Scientists very rarely find complete dinosaur skeletons. Even finding bone joints is a great success for paleontologists. In 95% of cases, they find teeth, vertebrae, bones or their fragments, parts of skulls and jaw fragments. A significant part of the finds are shells, remains of insects and other invertebrates, imprints of fish and fossil plants — in terms of biomass, they all significantly exceeded dinosaurs. In addition, for their remains to be preserved for tens of millions of years, special conditions are required, which are possible when many factors come together, which is a rather rare phenomenon. Nevertheless, all this makes our work more interesting, — said Vsevolod Efremenko.

    The remains of dinosaurs should be looked for in sedimentary rocks, which are the compressed remains of ancient lakes, rivers and swamps. They are usually formed in an aquatic environment, contain fossils and are destroyed fairly quickly on the earth’s surface. The remains of prehistoric animals are not preserved in volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Success in the search for dinosaurs can be expected if it is possible to determine the places where the shores of seas, rivers or lakes, as well as swamps, used to be, and to determine the excavation sites by their contours.

    At the beginning of the Cretaceous period, 145 million years ago, the position of the continents on our planet was already close to the modern one, only the oceans occupied a significantly larger area, and there were no polar ice caps in the polar region. In Siberia and Asia there was a mountainous terrain, and dinosaurs could have lived in the intermountain plains along the banks of rivers and lakes. Closer to the extinction – 66 million years ago – the continents occupied an even closer position to the modern one, and sedimentary basins are almost no longer observed in Siberia. Accordingly, there are almost no sedimentary rocks in which paleontologists can count on finds from that period. Therefore, the remains of dinosaurs of that period could not have been preserved. But in the Far East, the situation was different, so paleontologists discover very interesting finds there.

    — The climate in the Cretaceous period was quite comfortable for dinosaurs — moderate in the Arctic, warm northern in Siberia, and close to subtropical in the Transbaikal Territory. This is evidenced by the climatic reconstruction made on the basis of paleoflora. Dinosaurs could easily settle throughout the territory of Eurasia, Siberia, including Chukotka and Sakhalin. Even in Antarctica, fossil birds are found that once felt quite comfortable in those places, — explained Vsevolod Efremenko.

    The most ancient dinosaurs discovered in Russia lived in the Jurassic period (201-145 million years ago). In Siberia, two of their locations are known – in the Krasnoyarsk and Transbaikal regions.

    The most famous dinosaur of Transbaikalia was found in the vicinity of the village of Kulinda. Scientists have named it Kulindadromeus transbaikaliensis. It lived in these places about 168 million years ago. It was a small non-avian dinosaur of modest size (about the size of an average dog) covered in feathers and scales. It combined bird and reptilian features and was most likely warm-blooded.

    In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, in the vicinity of the village of Sharypovo, the remains of two dinosaurs of the Jurassic period were discovered: several bones of the predatory tyrannosaurid kilesk (a distant relative of the tyrannosaurus) and many bones of several stegosaurs, from which a whole skeleton was later assembled. Surprisingly, the bones of this herbivorous dinosaur were found among numerous shells of prehistoric turtles in a coal quarry.

    — Paleontology is a very creative science. We can guess from individual bones what genus and species of dinosaur they belong to, and then reconstruct the entire skeleton. This was the case with the kileskos, which hunted stegosaurs. The remains of these ancient animals are found next to each other. But in order not to damage the priceless finds, the paleontologist must work very carefully in the excavation. Since all the bones are scattered, it is necessary to clearly record the position of each of them, so that when assembling the dinosaur skeleton, you do not end up with a chimera, — the paleontologist explained.

    In the Cretaceous period (145-66 million years ago), the diversity of dinosaurs was enormous. At least a dozen sites of their remains have been discovered in Siberia. One of the largest is in the vicinity of the village of Shestakovo in the Kemerovo region. It was here that paleontologists found a large number of bones and even entire skeletons of Psittacosaurus sibirica, a small dinosaur that lived here 125-100 million years ago. The remains of the sauropod Sibirotitan were also found at this location — large cervical vertebrae. These 20-ton giants shared this territory with Psittacosaurus, as well as the recently discovered Ceratosaurus kiyakursor. It was a very mobile, long-legged, small dinosaur. Scientists have found parts of its skeleton — the humerus, cervical vertebrae, a fragment of the girdle of the forelimb, as well as the bones of the hind limb in anatomical articulation. Unfortunately, neither the skull nor its parts were found, and scientists cannot yet say with complete certainty whether this dinosaur was a predator or a herbivore.

    The northernmost dinosaur site is Teete in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). During the Cretaceous period, the climate here was warm and mild. Here, paleontologists have discovered stegosaurid teeth and vertebrae, as well as sauropod teeth.

    — Over three field seasons, expedition members collected a rich collection of teeth and vertebrae of small therapsids and salamanders. Remains of turtles, fish, lizards and extinct reptiles were also found. Surprisingly, this territory is a refugium — a region where species of ancient animals that have already become extinct in other places have survived for a long time, — said Vsevolod Efremenko.

    The scientist also spoke about other paleontological finds indicating that dinosaurs lived in Chukotka, Sakhalin and the Far East. Herbivorous duck-billed hadrosaurs lived in Chukotka, as well as ceratopsians – it was previously believed that they inhabited only North America. Eggshells were also found, which means that dinosaurs did not end up in the polar latitudes as a result of migration. They constantly lived and reproduced in these places.

    Many significant finds were made in Blagoveshchensk in the Far East. One of the most striking is the duck-billed dinosaur Olorotitan. The uniqueness of the find was that at the time of its discovery it was the most complete articulated dinosaur skeleton discovered in Russia. Its body length was approximately 8 meters, height – 3.5 meters, and weight could reach 3 tons.

    The richest finds were made in the Transbaikal Territory. They belong to the Jehol biota – these are fossil remains of feathered dinosaurs, birds, mammals and plants, which are found in large quantities in the Lower Cretaceous deposits of North-Eastern China. So far, these unique locations of ancient fauna have not been fully studied and, according to Vsevolod Efremenko, there is enough work for many generations of paleontologists.

    The gold price has surged to a new all-time high above US$2,900 (A$4,544) an ounce this month.

    It has risen by 12% since the start of the year and clearly outperformed US and Australian stock markets. The US stock index S&P500 is up 4% and the ASX 200 has gained just 2% in that time.

    That follows an extraordinary run in 2024, when the precious metal surged 27%, the biggest rise in 14 years.

    The drivers behind this surge include heightened uncertainty and fear of inflation that has been stoked by US President Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs, together with increased demand from central banks.



    What explains gold’s recent rally?

    There are many factors at play.

    The supply of gold through gold mine production and recycling is relatively constant over time. But the demand is more variable, and consists of four major components: jewellery, technology, investment and central banks.

    In 2024, jewellery accounted for about 50% of total demand, technology or industrial demand was 5%, investment demand was 25% and central bank demand was 20%.

    Investment demand refers to investors who buy gold as an asset. Central banks generally buy gold to diversify their reserve holdings.

    As all four demand components vary over time (some more than others), gold price movements are sometimes driven by jewellery demand, sometimes by investor demand, and sometimes – as has happened recently – by central bank demand.

    What adds to the difficulty is that both the gold supply and gold demand are global. The supply comes from gold mines across the globe, from emerging countries in Africa and industrial countries such as Australia and Canada.

    The same is true for demand. While China and India dominate jewellery demand, the demand comes from many countries, as does investment demand. Central bank demand stems from large and small central banks around the world.

    Why is there demand for gold?

    One key reason for the popularity of gold is that it is considered to be a store of value. This means gold rises with inflation and maintains its value in the long run.

    In other words, an ounce of gold buys the same basket of goods (or more) today than 20 years ago. This is not the case for money (or fiat currency) such as the US or Australian dollars.

    Due to inflation, the value of money is not constant but depreciates over time. Because gold holds its value, it is also called an inflation hedge.

    While the store of value property holds in the long run, there is another important property that is more short-lived and particularly relevant during crisis periods.

    Gold is seen as a safe haven in troubled times

    The safe haven property of gold means gold prices increase when investors seek shelter in response to a shock or crisis. For example, investors bought gold in reaction to the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks, the start of the global financial crisis in 2008, and the outbreak of COVID in 2020.

    The safe haven effect of gold is generally short-lived, often resulting in falling gold prices after about 15 days.

    Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and the subsequent sanctions on Russia – especially the freeze of Russia’s foreign government bond holdings abroad – has highlighted the risk to governments of losing access to foreign currency holdings.

    It appears some governments or central banks reacted to this with increased gold purchases. This led to a record high of 1,082 tonnes of central bank gold purchases in 2022.

    2023 saw the second-highest annual purchase in history at 1,051 tonnes, followed by 1,041 tonnes in 2024.

    The potential reaction of central banks to the Russian invasion of Ukraine is akin to investors seeking a safe haven, but is a rather new phenomenon for central banks.



    There is an additional, secondary, effect of such central bank purchases and rebalancing from US dollars to gold.

    Selling US dollars for gold implies a weakening US dollar, which increases the price of gold. (If the US dollar weakens, you need more US dollars to buy gold.) The inverse relationship between gold prices and currencies also makes gold a currency hedge. That means gold can protect investors from potential losses due to fluctuating exchange rates. This effect is particularly strong for rather volatile currencies such as the Australian dollar.

    In contrast to the shock caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the more recent increase in gold prices is harder to associate with a single shock.

    Broader economic worries

    The election of Trump has not only increased the risk of higher inflation due to tariffs and a trade war, it has also increased geopolitical risk as the US government reassesses its alliances with other countries.

    The relative unpredictability of Trump compared with his predecessors and with politicians more generally may have increased uncertainty and gold prices.
    The recent gold price trend highlights that “gold loves bad news”.

    Gold prices may anticipate geopolitical shocks or higher inflation. Gold prices rose well before inflation increased after the pandemic and started to fall when inflation had peaked in 2022.

    It is not clear exactly why gold has risen to all-time highs in 2025, but it’s possibly not good news for the world economy.
