    “We are extremely honored to receive a response from President Xi,” said Jeffrey Sullivan, head of the U.S. youth pickleball cultural exchange delegation from Montgomery County, Maryland.

    Chinese President Xi Jinping recently replied to the delegation’s letter, congratulating them on their successful visit to China. In April, Sullivan led a group of 44 teachers and students from 13 U.S. schools to China under Xi’s “50,000 in Five Years” initiative, which aims to bring 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study programs in a five-year span.

    After visiting Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing, the delegation sent a letter to Xi, expressing their gratitude for the initiative, noting they had forged unforgettable friendships with Chinese youths during the trip.

    In his reply, Xi said he was pleased to see that pickleball has become a new bond for youth exchanges between China and the United States. The future of China-U.S. relations depends on the youth, said Xi, expressing the hope that the delegation members will become a new generation of ambassadors for friendship between the two countries and make greater contributions to enhancing the friendship between the two peoples.

    A TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY

    “Thank you again for your vision and commitment to providing opportunities for our students and our countries to come together and build friendships, relationships and cultural learning opportunities,” the delegation wrote in the letter to Xi.

    Hailing the trip as life-changing, Sullivan said it enabled his delegation to immerse themselves in the Chinese culture and experience interpersonal relationships.

    “That was made possible because of the hospitality of the Chinese people, who opened their doors to us, who served us wonderful food, who had wonderful performances showcasing the culture and traditions of China,” he said, adding, “It (the visit) would be something that we would take with us forever.”

    Echoing Sullivan, Wang Pengfei, one of the initiators of the tour, said, “We want young Americans to see today’s China for themselves.”

    “Every high-five on the court, every hands-on experience in traditional craft workshops and every visit to a high-tech company is reshaping how they perceive China’s development,” said Wang.

    For student Isabella Brant, celebrating her birthday in China was the most memorable part of the trip. She recalled playing pickleball with her Chinese partners on that day, receiving flowers, but more importantly, gaining friendship.

    “Definitely life-changing!” said Brant, adding, “I was a little nervous to go over to China, but it definitely changed my perspective on things and how I viewed everything.”

    NEW BONDS

    “It was an amazing trip for our students to build friendships through sport,” Sullivan said, adding that the exchange between American and Chinese youths during this tour is “not just on the pickleball court, but also off the court.”

    Pickleball, a paddle sport that originated in the United States that blends elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, is easy to pick up for beginners and has rapidly gained popularity in China.

    According to Sullivan, Montgomery is the first U.S. school district to offer pickleball as a varsity sport, as this activity is fully inclusive and continues to bring people of all ability levels together.

    The Montgomery County public schools have now begun cooperation with Shenzhen Nanshan District Education Bureau, education groups of Beijing Middle School and Beijing No. 10 Middle School to establish long-term partnerships, with pickleball included as a key area of exchange.

    “I witnessed firsthand how the power of sports can transcend borders and bring people from different cultural backgrounds closer together,” said Xie Yuan, a student from Wenhua School in Shenzhen who took part in the event.

    Speaking of the friends she made during the tour, Ella Geary, a student from the delegation, said, “I find it amazing that you can just instantly bond with someone who lives on the other side of the globe.”

    Echoing Geary, Sullivan’s daughter, Reagan Sullivan, also a student from the delegation, depicted the bonds they built as “amazing and unbreakable.”

    Pickleball has become a new bond for building friendships, she said.

    PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE FRIENDSHIP

    In April 1971, a 15-member U.S. table tennis delegation took a historic trip to China, becoming the first delegation of Americans to visit China in decades.

    Recalling the China-U.S. “Ping-Pong Diplomacy” 54 years ago, Sullivan said that sports have a unique power to bring people together.

    Beyond discovering China’s cultural charm and technological innovation, many students played Ping-Pong for the first time. Sullivan said a visit to the China Table Tennis Museum gave them deeper insight into the history of “Ping-Pong Diplomacy,” which once helped bridge U.S.-China relations.

    Upon hearing Xi’s reply, Stephen Mull, former U.S. acting undersecretary of state for political affairs, emphasized the unifying power of sports.

    “It encourages each participant to be the very best version of himself or herself while underscoring the common humanity that binds us all together on the field of play,” he explained.

    “Pickleball has served as a unique and joyful bridge between our two cultures, one that allowed for connection, mutual respect and shared learning. Like your vision, we believe that sports engagement is essential in building the foundation for lasting international friendship,” the delegation wrote in the letter to Xi.

    The vision refers to Xi’s “50,000 in Five Years” initiative, launched in November 2023. Nearly 15,000 American youth visited China by the end of 2024 under the initiative, observing China with their own eyes and traveling the expanse of the country on their own feet.

    “If I had the opportunity, I would definitely go back,” said Joel Geary, a student from the delegation.

    “We are all part of the ‘50,000 in Five Years’ initiative,” said Sun Yuyan, a student who participated in the event from Shanghai Luwan High School, adding, “The future of China-U.S. relations should be a shared future shaped by our generation, one that lives up to the promise of our youth.”

    “I would love to organize additional exchanges and opportunities, whether it’s through pickleball or other sports, using them as a platform to bring people together,” said Sullivan.

    Back in 2016, after seven years away, Yang returned to her hometown with a mission to revive her community’s traditional hand-weaving practices. A native of Fengdeng Dong Village in Guizhou Province, she initially led a small team of weavers, embroiderers, and dyers to produce Dong brocade and traditional costumes. Before long, annual sales surpassed one million yuan (about 139,800 U.S. dollars).

    “Nowadays, we welcome visitors to experience the craft themselves. They can stay in our village, work at our looms, and get a feel for our way of life,” Yang said.

    To meet growing demand, she set up workshops for brocade weaving, dyeing, and costume-making. Prices for these hands-on courses range from just over 100 yuan to several hundred yuan, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

    Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I’m not happy with Putin. I can tell you that much right now,” Trump said, noting that Russian and Ukrainian soldiers are dying in the thousands.

    Trump said he is considering whether to support a bipartisan Senate bill that will impose sweeping sanctions on Russia.

    Tensions between Democrats and Republicans are on the rise amid the worst U.S. flooding event in recent memory.

    That’s because a key U.S. Democrat is demanding an investigation into whether staff shortages at a crucial government office contributed to mounting deaths in the deadly flooding event in the U.S. state of Texas.

    Experts believe the floods, and a possible investigation, could pose political problems for U.S. President Donald Trump.

    Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Darrell West told Xinhua: “The floods are a problem for Trump because his administration cut workers and budgets for those who forecast the weather and aid in disaster relief.”

    “It is the beginning of the hurricane season and there are likely to be a number of storms and high winds that harm people. What happened in Texas could end up happening in several different places around the country,” West said.

    “Trump says he wants to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency and have states handle their own disasters. But when there is tremendous damage and loss of life, states immediately turn to the federal government for assistance. His budget cuts in crucial areas will plague him for the rest of his time in office,” West said.

    Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer penned a letter Monday urging the Commerce Department to open an investigation into whether “staffing shortages at key local National Weather Service (NWS) stations contributed to the catastrophic loss of life and property during the deadly flooding.”

    “These are the experts responsible for modeling storm impacts, monitoring rising water levels, issuing flood warnings, and coordinating directly with local emergency managers about when to warn the public and issue evacuation orders,” Schumer said in the letter.

    Texas Democrat Joaquin Castro expressed concern over the issue in an interview Sunday with CNN.

    “When you have flash flooding, there’s a risk that you won’t have the personnel to make that — do that analysis, do the predictions in the best way,” he said.

    “And it could lead to tragedy. So, I don’t want to sit here and say conclusively that that was the case, but I do think that it should be investigated,” he said.

    Clay Ramsay, a researcher at the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland, told Xinhua: “The National Weather Service has definitely been under attack by DOGE for months. In the Texas case, those local offices were not in as bad shape as some in other parts of the country, but they did have a couple of supervisors missing.”

    He was referring to the Department of Government Efficiency — the group Trump created to cut government jobs he believed were not needed.

    The NWS did get the key warnings out in a timely fashion, nonetheless, they predicted an event half the size of what happened. The NWS was also short of a person whose job it was to coordinate NWS warnings with state agencies so they would get passed on, Ramsay noted.

    “Trump will find an underling to blame, so I don’t think this event by itself will affect him much. It’s also possible that the MAGA people will stop pressuring the NWS for a while. But the big question is: will there be a similar event every one or two months, so that a pattern becomes clear to the public?” Ramsay said.

    Christopher Galdieri, a political science professor at Saint Anselm College, told Xinhua: “The problem Democrats face here is that they don’t control any part of the federal government, so they cannot hold their own oversight hearings, etc.”

    “I think this sort of thing helps keep Trump unpopular and motivates Democratic voters and folks thinking about running next year. Depending on how this winds out in Texas it may also affect midterm elections in that state in particular,” Galdieri said.

    China’s passenger car sector recorded a double-digit growth in retail sales in June as the country’s policies to boost consumption continued to take effect, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) said on Tuesday.

    Last month, retail sales of passenger cars in China grew by 18.1 percent year on year to exceed 2.08 million units, data from the CPCA shows.

    The association attributed the strong increase to the impact of the national consumer goods trade-in program.

    The country reaffirmed its support for the program last month, ensuring continued funding to sustain the government subsidy payment throughout 2025. The program, a key part of the country’s broader strategy to stimulate domestic consumption, encourages consumers to replace outdated products — such as home appliances and vehicles — with newer, more efficient models.

    Last month, China produced 1.2 million new energy passenger vehicles, with retail sales exceeding 1.11 million units, representing year-on-year increases of 28.3 percent and 29.7 percent, respectively.

    In the first six months of the year, retail sales of passenger cars exceeded 10.9 million units, increasing 10.8 percent year on year, according to the CPCA data.

    The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) on Tuesday announced enhancements to offshore Renminbi (RMB) bond repurchase (repo) business, to facilitate the participation of Northbound Bond Connect investors in the repo business.

    The enhancements included supporting the rehypothecation of bond collaterals during the repo period and supporting cross-currency repo, including Hong Kong dollars, U.S. dollars and Euro. These arrangements will be officially launched on Aug. 25.

    According to the HKMA, these two enhancement measures aimed to adopt international market best practices and enhance operational efficiency. They will further expand the depth and breadth of the offshore repo market, improve the market-based mechanism for offshore RMB liquidity management, and broaden the use of onshore RMB bonds as collateral in the offshore market.

    Eddie Yue, HKMA chief executive, said that to further develop Hong Kong’s bond market and enhance its attractiveness to issuers and global investors, efforts were being made to broaden the investor base and improve market liquidity.

    Global trade grew by an estimated 300 billion U.S. dollars in the first half (H1) of 2025, despite showing a slower growth pace, the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said in a report released Tuesday.

    In its latest Global Trade Update report, the UNCTAD warned that the global trade outlook remains uncertain due to persistent policy instability, geopolitical tensions, and signs of weakening global growth in the second half of the year.

    According to the report, global trade rose by about 1.5 percent in the first quarter and was expected to grow by 2 percent in the second quarter.

    The report noted that price increases contributed to the overall rise in trade value, while trade volumes grew by just 1 percent. Prices for traded goods edged up in the first quarter and continued to rise in the second quarter.

    Services trade remained the primary driver of growth, rising 9 percent over the last four quarters.

    The report showed mixed trends in merchandise trade among major economies in the first quarter of 2025, with developed economies outpacing developing countries. The report attributed this to a 14 percent surge in imports by the United States and a 6 percent rise in exports from the European Union.

    Meanwhile, the United States has seen a widening trade deficit over the last four quarters, contributing to deepened trade imbalances.

    The report also highlighted the heightened risks of trade fragmentation brought by recent U.S. tariffs, including a 10 percent baseline tariff and additional duties on steel and aluminum. It warned that a further wave of unilateral actions could trigger trade tensions.

    China overcame an early deficit to squeeze past Australia 73-69 in its final warmup game ahead of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup on Tuesday.

    Falling 76-63 to Australia two days prior, China held firm on the free throw line late in the game to prevail, concluding its warmup series with a 5-1 record.

    Yang Liwei made both free throws with 19.5 seconds remaining to put China ahead 72-69, and Jia Saiqi added another to secure the win.

    “Today we were more accustomed to the game pace on both ends of the floor. We didn’t give up when trailing, but executed the coach’s tactics and made shots resolutely without overthinking the scoreline,” said Yang, who had nine points.

    Australia showed its shooting accuracy after the tip-off, making its first six shots for a 13-7 lead. With promising center Zhang Ziyu sidelined again, China began to claw back with bench players in action as it whittled the deficit to three points, before Australia pulled away again late in the first quarter for a 25-16 lead.

    Luo Xinyu sank two straight 3-pointers as China pulled within 30-33, but Australia controlled the pace afterward en route to a 42-36 halftime advantage.

    A pair of layups from Yang Shuyu helped China tie the game at 46-46 midway through the third quarter. Wang Siyu scored five points in a row as China rode on a 10-2 surge to go ahead 56-55, its first lead of the game. Australia carried a slim one-point advantage entering the final frame.

    Yang Shuyu top scored with 15 points, and Luo added 12 by going four of six from 3-point range.

    “In such a physical game, both teams didn’t have a high success rate as we were more focused on physical contact,” said China coach Gong Luming. “If China aims to rank among the world’s best, we need to adapt to that and raise our game on shots and free throws.”

    Isobel Borlase was the only Australian player scoring in double figures with 11 points.

    Defending champion China is placed in Group B along with New Zealand, South Korea and Indonesia at the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup to be held in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province from July 13 to 20.

    Joao Pedro scored twice against his former club as Chelsea reached the FIFA Club World Cup final on Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Fluminense.

    Less than a week after joining Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion, Pedro struck either side of halftime to set up a meeting with either Real Madrid or reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s final.

    The game ended on a worrying note for Chelsea after midfielder Moises Caicedo limped off with an ankle injury.

    Both sides began with high intensity at MetLife Stadium despite the temperature reaching 35 degrees Celsius at kickoff.

    Chelsea dominated the early stages and got its reward in the 18th minute when Pedro Neto’s cross into the box was cleared straight to Pedro, who curled a shot into the far corner.

    Malo Gusto almost doubled the lead moments later, winning a header in the box but directing his effort straight at goalkeeper Fabio.

    Fluminense had its best scoring chance of the first half when Hercules beat goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to the ball and fired a shot that was hooked away on the line by Marc Cucurella.

    The Brazilian outfit then had a penalty for a Trevoh Chalobah handball overturned after the referee reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor and ruled the defender’s arm was in a natural position.

    Chelsea regained the initiative after halftime as Caicedo and Cucurella both went close with shots from distance.

    Pedro scored his team’s second goal in the 56th minute, cutting inside on the counterattack before lashing a drive that bounced in off the underside of the bar.

    Fluminense looked deflated as Chelsea continued to press forward in the oppressive conditions.

    Gusto’s long-range attempt narrowly missed the top-right corner and substitute Nicolas Jackson sent an angled shot into the side-netting when Cole Palmer was free inside the six-yard box.

    Playing against his former club, 40-year-old defender Thiago Silva was arguably Fluminense’s best player, blocking and repelling a number of Chelsea attacks.

    His clearing header from a Cucurella cross in the 75th minute almost certainly denied the Premier League club a third goal.

    Fluminense pushed to get back into the match but struggled to break down Chelsea’s organized defense. Substitute Keno almost broke the English team’s resistance in the final minutes, steering a header wide after beating Reece James in the air.

    HOHHOT, July 8 — China has made significant progress in reversing grassland degradation over the past five years, with degraded grasslands shrinking by an average of 50 million mu (approximately 3.33 million hectares) annually, officials announced Tuesday at a national conservation conference in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

    The country has maintained stable grassland vegetation coverage exceeding 50 percent while significantly reducing degraded areas. Strict legal enforcement has addressed nearly 30,000 violations nationwide since 2021.

    Targeted measures successfully controlled overgrazing in key regions like Inner Mongolia, achieving balanced grassland-livestock capacity. Annual fresh grass production now surpasses 600 million tonnes nationwide.

    Grass seed supply shortages have been largely resolved.     BEIJING, July 8 — China on Tuesday issued a document to support the development of zero-carbon industrial parks, aiming to accelerate the country’s green transition.

    The document, released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and two other government departments, encourages localities to build zero-carbon industrial parks that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions to “near zero” through advanced planning, design, technology and management, and eventually achieve net zero emissions.

    The document outlines eight key tasks in areas such as transitioning energy structures, enhancing energy efficiency, optimizing industrial structures, promoting resource conservation, upgrading infrastructure, applying advanced technologies, improving energy and carbon management, and fostering reform and innovation in park operations.

    To support the building of zero-carbon industrial parks, the NDRC said it will leverage existing funding channels and encourage local governments to provide financial support through such means as the issuance of local government special-purpose bonds for eligible projects.

    Industrial parks will also be supported to bring in talent, technologies and professional institutions to assist with energy-saving upgrades, carbon emissions accounting and the carbon footprint certification of products.     East China’s Zhejiang Province has evacuated more than 71,000 residents from high-risk areas as Typhoon Danas nears.

    At 2 p.m. Tuesday, Danas was 118 km east of Wenzhou City, moving at a speed of 10 km per hour westward, according to the Zhejiang Meteorological Observatory.

    The provincial authorities have enacted comprehensive safety protocols, including suspending 118 ferry routes, grounding 577 pleasure boats and canceling 372 rail services. Attractions and high-risk tourism activities have been closed. Emergency teams have been deployed to 12 geological hazard zones in the cities of Wenzhou, Taizhou, and Lishui.

    Approximately 57,000 emergency rescue personnel across the province have been mobilized as standbys, according to the provincial emergency management department.

    Members of U.S. President Donald Trump’s national security team plan to discuss details of shipping weapons to Ukraine on Tuesday, after Trump said the United States would send more weapons to the country, according to media reports.

    “We’re going to send some more weapons. We have to,” Trump said Monday ahead of a dinner with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

    In a statement Monday night, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the U.S. Department of Defense will provide further defensive military assistance to Ukraine.

    Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday in a post on social media that he had discussed Ukraine’s air defense capabilities in a phone conversation with Trump. They agreed that they would work together to strengthen protecting the skies of Ukraine, he said.

    The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted a lower court order that had blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order requiring government agencies to lay off hundreds of thousands of federal employees.

    “Because the government is likely to succeed on its argument that the executive order and memorandum are lawful … we grant the application,” the court wrote in its brief order. “We express no view on the legality of any agency RIF (large-scale reductions in force) and reorganization plan produced or approved pursuant to the executive order and memorandum.”

    In February, Trump detailed an extensive plan instructing agency heads to prepare for RIFs. Later that month, the administration issued an accompanying memorandum alleging that the federal government is “costly, inefficient and deeply in debt” and blaming that inefficiency on “unproductive and unnecessary programs that benefit radical interest groups.”

    The memo required agency heads to submit initial layoff plans to the Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management two weeks later.

    “The decision, another victory for Trump at the Supreme Court, allows the government to begin taking steps to dramatically overhaul 21 agencies and departments, including the departments of Commerce, Health and Human Services, Energy, Treasury and State,” reported ABC News on this subject.

    New Zealand leads the overall cost and time efficiency rankings, with multinationals benefiting from its streamlined digital processes and straightforward compliance requirements. Singapore tops processing speed, while Malaysia emerges as most cost-efficient.

    At the other end of the scale, South Korea, China, and Indonesia rank lowest with the most costly and complex, demanding careful planning and necessitating specific local expertise.

This creates two distinct operational realities for multinational organizations.

    What’s particularly challenging for global in-house teams is navigating these extremes both within a single region and a single team – from 11-day processing times in Singapore to 64 days in Macau. The contrast is striking: while one jurisdiction accepts simple e-signature execution, another requires multiple sequential approvals in a foreign language just to process a single document. As regulatory requirements evolve and digital transformation accelerates, this gap will likely widen further, making strategic entity management crucial for operational success.”

    RIO DE JANEIRO, July 8 — Chinese Premier Li Qiang said here Tuesday that the Chinese economy is fully capable of withstanding any external shocks and achieving long-term stable growth.

    Meeting with representatives of Chinese enterprises operating in Brazil, Li said that since the year’s beginning, the Chinese economy has held up under pressure and maintained sustained and positive momentum.

    Participants included local branch chiefs of Bank of China, Great Wall Motor, State Grid, Goldwind Sci & Tech, China’s leading food trader COFCO, Gree Electric Appliances, Dahua Technology and ZTT Group.

    After listening to the remarks from the participants, Li said that in recent years, Chinese enterprises have accelerated their pace of going global and improved their capabilities for international operations, playing an increasingly important role in boosting domestic economy.

    Li said the first half of the year has witnessed the resilience of China’s economic growth with potential in domestic demand and bright spots in innovation.

    Noting that the Chinese economy will always provide staunch support for Chinese companies operating overseas, the premier said the government will provide better services and guarantees for enterprises, strengthen the building of various mechanisms and platforms for economic and trade cooperation, and improve the overseas comprehensive service system.

    He added that greater policy support will be introduced in such areas as policy consultation, finance, credit insurance and security, in order to create a better environment for enterprises and better facilitate their development.

    The current global economic and trade landscape is undergoing profound changes with the rise of unilateralism and protectionism, and increasing trade and investment barriers, Li noted. At the same time, a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is further advancing, presenting both challenges and opportunities for enterprises, he added.

    Li said he hopes Chinese companies can adapt to the trend and take proactive actions. They should build strong brands, strengthen planning, and enhance the global competitiveness of “Made in China” and “Created in China,” he said.

    It is essential to cultivate the local markets deeply by providing consumers with more products and services that meet market demand, the premier said, adding that Chinese companies should use Brazil as a platform to expand into the broader Latin American market and strive for greater development.

    Li said that Chinese enterprises must respect local laws, regulations and cultural practices, operate in compliance with legal requirements, actively undertake social responsibilities, and strive to forge a responsible and accountable image.

    Participants said Chinese enterprises will give full play to their own strengths and characteristics, enhance cooperation, effectively respond to various challenges, take root locally and remain committed to operating in compliance with laws and regulations.

    They also vowed to continue to expand their presence in sectors such as finance, energy, agriculture and scientific and technological innovation, uphold the positive image of Chinese enterprises overseas, contribute to building closer economic and trade ties between China and Brazil as well as other Latin American countries, and better achieve mutual benefit and win-win outcomes.
