HANGZHOU, July 19 (Xinhua) — Lishui International Airport in southern east China’s Zhejiang Province officially opened for business on Friday.

On the same day in the afternoon, the first flight, CA1873, from Beijing Capital International Airport arrived at the airport and landed successfully.

The new facility, which has the status of a domestic regional airport, is designed to service up to 1 million passengers and handle 4 thousand tons of cargo per year. The runway is 2800 meters long, the area of the terminal buildings is 12 thousand square meters.

The opening of Lishui Airport will enhance the city’s role as an important transportation hub, improve services for 470,000 overseas residents and 2.7 million local residents, attract more tourists to Lishui’s scenic areas, and create conditions for increased investment in the city and surrounding areas, said Luo Xiaolin, head of the local transportation bureau.

On its first day of operation, the airport opened flights to Beijing and Shanghai. Flights to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Guiyang, Chongqing and Chengdu are planned to be launched by the end of the year. The number of air routes is expected to exceed 10 by the end of 2025, and reach 14 in 2026. -0-

GUANGZHOU, July 19 (Xinhua) — South China’s Guangdong Province’s import and export volumes hit a record high in January-June 2025, compared with the same periods in previous years, according to data from the Guangdong branch of the General Administration of Customs.

Guangdong Province’s total foreign trade reached 4.55 trillion yuan (about 633.9 billion U.S. dollars), up 4 percent year on year and 1.1 percentage points higher than China’s average growth rate. Exports totaled 2.89 trillion yuan, up 1.1 percent year on year, while imports surged 9.5 percent to 1.66 trillion yuan.

Since the third quarter of 2023, Guangdong Province has maintained positive growth for eight consecutive quarters. Trade forms have been continuously optimized. In the first half of 2025, the proportion of imports and exports carried out in the form of general trade was about 60%. The import and export volume of bonded logistics business was 912.62 billion yuan, an increase of 14% year on year, exceeding that of processing trade.

During the reporting period, Guangdong Province registered 130,000 foreign trade enterprises that actually carried out imports and exports, more than 9,000 more than the same period a year earlier. In particular, the number of non-state enterprises reached about 110,000, accounting for 84 percent of the total number of foreign trade enterprises, and their turnover exceeded 60 percent of the province’s total foreign trade.

Guangdong Province’s trading partners are becoming more diversified. In the first half of the year, Guangdong’s foreign trade with countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative amounted to 1.79 trillion yuan, up 3.8 percent. At the same time, the province’s trade with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the European Union, Taiwan, Japan and the Republic of Korea also increased. In addition, trade with Africa and the five Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan) grew by 8.5 percent and 23.1 percent, respectively, exceeding the overall figure.

Guangdong Province’s high-tech and branded product exports continue to grow. The export volume of electromechanical products increased by 7.2 percent to reach 1.96 trillion yuan, accounting for nearly 70 percent of the province’s total export volume. Meanwhile, the export volume of products under its own brands amounted to 655.27 billion yuan, an increase of 11.2 percent.

Thanks to the expansion of domestic demand, imports of electromechanical products increased by 19.3 percent in January-June 2025, reaching 1.16 trillion yuan, accounting for 70 percent of the province’s total imports. In addition, imports of consumer goods including food, cosmetics and personal care products also increased. -0-

WASHINGTON, July 19 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump filed a defamation lawsuit against several news companies on Friday, according to court records.

The lawsuit was filed in a Miami, Florida, court against two Wall Street Journal reporters, as well as news companies Dow Jones, News Corp and media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

The reason for this step was an article in the Wall Street Journal describing a congratulatory letter, allegedly from D. Trump to financier Jeffrey Epstein. It was sent in 2003 for the birthday of J. Epstein, who was accused of sexual exploitation of minors. The letter contained a drawing that allegedly had a sexual connotation.

    D. Trump denied the article and said the congratulatory message was fake. He warned on social media that he planned to sue.

“Mr. Murdoch said he would take care of this, but apparently he had no authority to do so… Instead, they publish a false, malicious, defamatory story anyway. President Trump will soon sue the Wall Street Journal, News Corp, and Mr. Murdoch,” Trump wrote earlier on Truth Social. -0-

UNITED NATIONS, July 19 (Xinhua) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed an independent scientific panel of experts to study the physical impact and social consequences of a nuclear war, a spokesman for the world body said on Friday.

“The creation of this group of 21 experts is a response to a global situation in which the risk of nuclear war has reached its highest level since the Cold War,” UN Secretary-General’s deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said at a daily briefing.

Experts will need to study the consequences at the local, regional and planetary levels, both in the first days and weeks and for decades after a nuclear war, he said.

    F. Hack noted that the group members are leading experts in their scientific fields and represent all regions of the world.

MEXICO CITY, July 18 (Xinhua) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday strongly opposed the construction of a new section of wall on the border with the United States in New Mexico, calling it a unilateral move by Washington.

At a daily press conference, she stressed that Mexico is in no way involved in the project and does not provide funding.

“They are building it themselves. We do not support the wall. We have secured the border through cooperation and coordination, not through walls,” said K. Sheinbaum.

According to her, the decision to build the wall belongs exclusively to US President Donald Trump. Mexico gives preference to cooperation based on development and respect for Mexicans living in the US, the head of state noted.

The Trump administration this week began a new phase of construction on an additional border fence between Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and Ciudad Juarez in northern Mexico. The project includes 6 miles of 30-foot-tall steel posts installed behind an older 18-foot-tall fence. –0–

  • India sees strong 12.6% growth in investment confidence in Q3 2025, highest among 32 economies: report

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Despite a marginal 1.4 per cent decline in business investment confidence, India recorded the highest year-on-year growth among 32 economies surveyed for Q3 2025, registering a strong 12.6 per cent increase, according to the Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) Global Business Investment Confidence Index.

The report noted that the Global Business Investment Confidence Index fell by 13.1 per cent quarter-on-quarter (q/q) for Q3 2025, marking the third consecutive quarter of decline.

This drop in confidence was broad-based, with sharp declines reported across all five sub-indices. This contrasts with Q2 2025, when only capital expenditure and workforce size were expected to decrease.

The report also highlighted that nearly half of the surveyed businesses (46.8 per cent) cited supply chain stability as a key factor influencing investment decisions for Q3 2025. In contrast, tariff uncertainty and domestic interest rates were among the least influential factors. This aligns with earlier findings indicating that the Global Supply Chain Continuity Index remains the lowest among all indices, standing at 99.9 for Q3.

Globally, the decline in investment confidence was steeper in advanced economies than in emerging ones. Even when excluding the U.S.—which saw a sharp 16.7 per cent q/q drop and holds the largest weight—confidence in advanced economies fell more significantly than in emerging economies. France, Japan, Germany, and Spain recorded the steepest declines among advanced economies, reversing the gains made in Q2.

Among emerging markets, the Russian Federation (-26.1 per cent), Brazil (-23.9 per cent), and South Africa (-20.7 per cent) experienced the largest q/q drops. In Brazil, aggressive monetary tightening by the Central Bank, which has raised the Selic rate by 425 basis points since last year, has significantly dampened capital expenditure plans. In South Africa, exposure to U.S. tariffs—particularly on automobile exports—has contributed to the decline in confidence.

In terms of sectors, the manufacturing industry recorded a steeper drop in investment confidence (-17.2 per cent) than the services sector (-10.8 per cent) for Q3 2025. Within manufacturing, the capital goods (-33.1 per cent), food (-26.9 per cent), and automotive (-26.4 per cent) sub-sectors saw the most significant declines. The chemicals manufacturing sub-sector reported the smallest decline at -14.8 per cent, potentially due to exemptions from new U.S. tariffs, particularly those affecting pharmaceutical products.

On a positive note, the report stated that expected capacity utilisation for Q3 2025 rose to 68.9 per cent in the services sector and 69.3 per cent in the manufacturing sector—the first quarter-on-quarter increase since Q1 2024.

“Though this is a positive signal for future capital expenditure, the level remains below the 2024 averages of 73.9% and 74.1% for services and manufacturing, respectively,” the report concluded.

  • ‘Symbol of courage and patriotism’: PM Modi remembers Mangal Pandey on birth anniversary

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid rich tributes to freedom fighter Mangal Pandey on his birth anniversary, describing him as a “pioneering warrior” who stood up to British rule and remains a symbol of courage and patriotism.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Heartfelt tributes to the great freedom fighter Mangal Pandey on his birth anniversary. He was a pioneering warrior of the country who challenged British rule. His story of courage and valour will continue to be a source of inspiration for the people of the nation.”

Mangal Pandey played a crucial role in sparking the Revolt of 1857 – often regarded as India’s first war of independence – a turning point that eventually led to the end of East India Company rule and the beginning of direct governance by the British Crown under the Government of India Act, 1858.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also honoured Pandey’s legacy, calling him an “unparalleled warrior” and a powerful symbol of patriotism. “Mangal Pandey, with the spark of his valour, turned the 1857 uprising into a massive flame, shaking the foundations of British rule,” Shah wrote on X.

BJP National President J.P. Nadda saluted Pandey’s sacrifice, calling him the pioneer of India’s freedom struggle. “His legacy will continue to motivate future generations to serve the nation,” he said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed similar sentiments, crediting Pandey with awakening a new consciousness of freedom. “By initiating the struggle against British rule, he awakened a new consciousness of freedom in the country,” Singh said in his tribute.

Born in Nagwa village in Ballia district of present-day Uttar Pradesh, Mangal Pandey joined the Bengal Army in 1849 and was serving as a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry when he famously defied colonial authority in March 1857. His act of resistance at the Barrackpore Cantonment served as a catalyst for the broader uprising that followed.

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 19 (Xinhua) — The BRICS mechanism is becoming a powerful driving force for reform of the global governance system, British scholar Martin Jacques said in a recent interview with Xinhua.

While existing global institutions “largely privilege the West,” Jacques noted, “the goal of BRICS is not to replace them, but to reform the system – the way it functions, the forms of representation, and so on.”

The scholar called the group’s expansion in recent years “a very important development,” noting that it now “represents the vast majority of the world’s population who live in developing countries.” Its role as a platform for exchange and cooperation between countries in the Global South is therefore becoming increasingly visible, he said.

However, M. Jacques acknowledged, this wider platform also creates new difficulties.

“How does BRICS – which has recently expanded, so it has changed a lot, its dynamics are different – give shape and strength to the BRICS views on the reforms that are needed?” he asked.

“The association must find forms of representation and channels through which it can exert its influence,” he added.

Looking to the future, M. Jacques noted that the long-term goal of BRICS is to enable developing countries to play a more significant role in shaping global governance.

“Let’s say the ultimate goal is for the Global South to become a core element of global governance,” he suggested.

The British scholar also highlighted China’s role in forming and maintaining the BRICS mechanism, noting that Beijing played a decisive role in guiding its development, especially before the expansion of the association.

“China’s role was decisive. Without China, this would not have happened and could not have happened,” he commented.

“China’s weight – its economic weight – is decisive,” said M. Jacques. “But also China’s strategic concept. Because of its power and independence, China has a very independent mentality,” the scientist added.

Speaking at the BRICS Media and Think Tank Forum this week, M. Jacques noted the importance of promoting a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the BRICS mechanism.

Intellectual and media interaction can play a decisive role in shaping its evolving identity, he stressed.

“I think we need to understand BRICS better. We need to listen to people from different countries – how they see it and what they bring to it,” he said. “That’s how you can develop the culture of the organization,” the scientist noted.

Like any significant international institution, BRICS needs a constant process of reflection and self-determination, he added.

“The organization must have some kind of self-realization – a constant renewal of the understanding of what it is,” said the British scientist. “The association of journalists, reporters, editors, intellectuals and so on is a very good idea for this. I think it is necessary,” added M. Jacques. –0–

  • Amarnath Yatra proceeds peacefully, over 2.73 lakh pilgrims have had darshan

    Source: Government of India (4)

The annual Amarnath Yatra continues to progress smoothly, with over 2.73 lakh pilgrims having had darshan at the holy cave shrine in the last 16 days since the pilgrimage began on July 3, officials confirmed.

On Saturday, a fresh batch of 6,365 pilgrims departed from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in two escorted convoys. The first convoy, comprising 92 vehicles, left at 3:25 a.m. with 2,851 pilgrims heading to the Baltal base camp, while the second convoy of 119 vehicles departed at 3:53 a.m., carrying 3,514 yatris to the Pahalgam base camp.

Rituals associated with the Yatra are also underway. On July 10, the Bhumi Pujan of the Chhari Mubarak-the sacred mace of Lord Shiva-was performed at the Gauri Shankar temple in Pahalgam. The ceremony was led by Mahant Swami Deependra Giri, the custodian of the mace. The Chhari Mubarak was taken from its seat at Dashnami Akhara in Srinagar to Pahalgam and later returned to its original place. It will begin its final journey to the cave shrine on August 4 and reach on August 9, marking the culmination of the Yatra on Shravan Purnima, which also coincides with Raksha Bandhan.

In the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow—where 26 civilians were killed—authorities have implemented extensive multi-layered security measures. An additional 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been deployed to strengthen the existing presence of the Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB, and local police forces.

Pilgrims can undertake the 38-day Yatra via two routes: the traditional Pahalgam route, a 46 km trek taking four days via Chandanwari, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni; or the shorter Baltal route, involving a 14 km trek that allows a return the same day. However, helicopter services have not been made available this year due to security concerns.

The cave shrine, located at an altitude of 3,888 metres, houses a naturally formed ice stalagmite, believed by devotees to represent Lord Shiva. The formation is known to wax and wane with the lunar cycle.

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) — With global supply chains undergoing major restructuring, the ongoing China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) acts as a catalyst for enhancing supply chain resilience, Zhou Xing, head of public affairs at PwC China, told Xinhua on Thursday.

As the world’s first national-level platform dedicated to supply chains, the expo helps build connections between Chinese and international companies, promote technical coordination and deepen economic cooperation, Zhou Xing said.

According to her, CISCE provides a highly effective meeting platform and enables companies to align technologies, standards and markets, promoting global collaboration.

For Chinese companies, the expo provides an opportunity to expand their international presence and directly connect with global supply chain hubs. For multinational companies, it provides an opportunity to gain access to China’s vast market, mature industrial ecosystem, and strong policy support.

Global supply chains are shifting from a model focused solely on efficiency to one that prioritizes sustainability. Companies are diversifying their supply networks to balance cost and security, turning to regional clusters while maintaining global coordination, Zhou Xing argues.

According to her, in the context of accelerating digital transformation, technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things are breaking down information barriers, increasing the speed and accuracy of the entire supply chain.

“Green standards, including carbon tracking and sustainability metrics, are becoming necessary across all industries. Supply chains are evolving from linear models to cross-industry ecosystems, especially in emerging sectors such as the low-altitude economy,” said Zhou Xing.

“China is playing an increasingly important role in this shift,” she said. “It is no longer just a manufacturing base, but an innovation hub. By integrating digital tools and investing in strategic sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and biotechnology, China is strengthening its position in global value chains.”

The government’s commitment to developing new-quality productive forces is also changing corporate strategies. According to her, this policy priority is driving environmental and digital transformation across all industries.

Zhou Xing expressed confidence that China’s business environment remains very attractive for multinational companies looking to restructure their supply chains.

The country’s institutional openness, market scale and leadership in green and digital technologies provide a solid foundation for transformation, she added.

Identifying growth areas such as advanced manufacturing, low-carbon industries and digital and physical integration, Zhou Xing said they are in line with both China’s industrial upgrading goals and global trends, making the country a key destination for supply chains in the future.

“China offers the space, political stability and innovative momentum that global businesses crave,” she said, adding that “venues like the China International Supply Chain Expo are helping businesses from all sides navigate uncertainty and achieve new growth.” –0–

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) — The Tianjin Vocational Institute (TVI) in northern China recently completed training for the first group of teachers who will work at the second Lu Ban Workshop in Kazakhstan, the Tianjin Daily newspaper reported.

The course participants included 15 teachers from the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (ENU) in Astana, Kazakhstan. During the artificial intelligence (AI) training, which started on June 23, they studied four core disciplines – data mining, machine learning, deep learning, and industrial internet – and also received practical training in AI-related technologies, a collaborative robot, and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Last year, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between TPI and ENU on the joint creation of the second Lu Ban Workshop in Kazakhstan, which will focus on AI. The first such institution in this country, founded with the support of TPI and aimed at training specialists in the field of transport and communications, was put into trial operation in 2023.

As the teacher of this training, TPI teacher Li Guohui said: “We specially designed these training courses aimed at the industrial development of Kazakhstan. In particular, according to the scenarios of UAV technology application in local agricultural activities, the cadets from Kazakhstan not only learned flight control, but also completed a series of practical tasks, including mapping agricultural land.”

He added that the first batch of training equipment intended for the second Lu Ban Workshop in Kazakhstan had already been delivered to the country, and installation and commissioning work would soon begin.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Collins and Colleagues Successfully Secure the Release of Crucial Education Funding for Schools and Afterschool Programs

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Maine Susan Collins

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Education announced it will officially release critical Fiscal Year 2025 funding to support 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which provide afterschool and summer learning opportunities for students. This announcement comes in response to a letter sent this week by Senator Collins and some of her Republican colleagues to Russell Vought, Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), advocating for the release of anticipated education formula funding. Senator Collins also personally spoke to Education Secretary Linda McMahon to advocate for the release of this frozen funding yesterday.

“21st Century Community Learning Centers support low-income families and rural communities with after-school programs and summer education that enable students to thrive and parents to continue working. This funding was appropriated by Congress and is relied on by many in our state. I am so glad my colleagues and I were able to work together to effectively urge the Administration to get these funds released. There is more funding that still needs to be disbursed, and I will continue to work to ensure it is delivered swiftly so educators can prepare for the upcoming academic year with certainty and Maine students and families have the resources they need to succeed,” said Senator Collins.

Specifically, the letter, led by Senator Capito (R-WV) and Senator Collins, requests that the Administration faithfully implement the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Full-Year Continuing Resolution Act, which Congress passed and President Trump signed into law earlier this year. The letter was also signed by Senators John Boozman (R-AR), Katie Britt (R-AL), Deb Fischer (R-NE), John Hoeven (R-ND), Jim Justice (R-WV), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Mike Rounds (R-SD). The complete text of the letter can be read here.

As a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and a founding member of the Senate Afterschool Caucus, Senator Collins has been a strong supporter of 21st Century Community Learning Centers.

Last week, Senator Collins also announced that the Department of Education awarded a total of $4,981,867 in TRIO Student Support Services grants to 11 Maine colleges and universities after her questioning of Secretary McMahon on the proposed elimination of TRIO programs during an Appropriations hearing.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Markey Raises Concerns About Paramount’s “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Cancellation, Potential Trump Administration Involvement

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Massachusetts Ed Markey

    Letter Text (PDF)

Washington (July 18, 2025) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), member of the Commitee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, today wrote to Paramount Global Chair Shari Redstone, demanding answers on the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” specifically requesting whether anyone in the Trump administration asked for the show to be cancelled.

In the letter, Senator Markey wrote, “Last night, Stephen Colbert announced that CBS will end ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ next spring. Although CBS, a Paramount subsidiary, has cited financial reasons — including a projected $40 million loss for the show this year — for this decision, the timing has raised public questions. Just days earlier, Colbert sharply criticized Paramount’s $16 million settlement of a lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump — a settlement many view as an attempt to facilitate government approval of the company’s proposed merger with Skydance Global. Given the importance of protecting editorial independence from political influence, and the public interest stakes in the pending merger, I am seeking additional information to understand the full context surrounding this programming decision.”

Senator Markey continued, “If Paramount is unhappy with Colbert’s monologue — including its political tone or position — the company has every right to respond with personnel and other operational decisions. And it, of course, has every right to make programming decisions for financial reasons. But Paramount should not be making editorial decisions or compromising its editorial independence at the behest of or under pressure from the government, including in the context of securing FCC merger approval. If the Trump administration is using its regulatory authority to influence or otherwise pressure your company’s editorial decisions, the public deserves to know.”

Senator Markey requested answers by July 25, 2025, to the following questions:

    1. Has any official in the Trump administration, including the President or an official at the FCC, contacted your company about Colbert’s monologue on Monday night?

    1. If so, did they request Paramount or CBS take any action in response to Colbert’s monologue, including the cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”? If so, please identify those conversations and the requested actions.

Senator Markey has aggressively pushed back on the Trump administration’s efforts to attack news organizations and intimidate the media. In May 2025, as Paramount was reportedly pushing for the settlement to help facilitate approval of its merger, Senators Markey and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) wrote to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr requesting that the FCC hold a full Committee vote on the Paramount-Skydance merger. After Paramount announced its settlement with Trump, Senators Markey and Luján wrote to FCC Commissioner Olivia Trusty, urging the FCC to hold a full Commission vote on the pending merger. In March 2025, Senators Markey and Luján, along with Senator Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), introduced the Broadcast Freedom and Independence Act, legislation that would prohibit the FCC from revoking broadcast licenses or taking action against broadcasters based on the viewpoints they broadcast. In February 2025, Senators Markey and Luján, along with Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.), wrote to Chairman Carr and then-Commissioner Nathan Simington regarding the FCC’s recent, politically motivated actions against broadcasters and public media.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Chinese Russian teacher becomes ‘culture carrier’ using language as boat

TIANJIN, July 19 (Xinhua) — “Relax your tongue, let the air flow vibrate it, try to pronounce “tr-r-r-r” or “d-r-r-r” first… In a “intensive reading in Russian” class at Nankai University, Huang Mingtuo, associate professor of the Russian Language Department at the Institute of Foreign Languages, patiently explains to first-year students the method of pronouncing the “r” sound, which is unusual for Chinese people, helping the students overcome this “main enemy” in learning Russian.

The students are actively trying, and the alveolar trembling sounds “tr-r-r-r” and “d-r-r-r” are heard in the classroom. Smiling, Juan Minto moves between the rows, humorously correcting and guiding the students, turning seemingly boring phonetic exercises into an exciting process. The classes are filled with cheerful laughter.

In his lessons, Juan Minto often uses various game methods. “In this relay exercise, each student must repeat exactly what the previous students said and add their own new sentence. Let’s see if we can complete the whole chain without making any mistakes!” As soon as he said these words, the atmosphere in the lesson instantly became both tense and lively.

“This is my teaching secret. ‘Relay Race’ not only trains students’ auditory perception, comprehension, short-term memory and fluency, but also imperceptibly strengthens their grammar and logical coherence,” Juan Minto explained.

The principle of “going beyond the language and embracing the culture” is a long-standing pedagogical focus of Juan Minto and another of his secrets for awakening students’ enthusiasm for learning Russian. When the text of the lesson mentions “Baikal,” he appropriately talks about the majestic landscapes of the lake that he has seen himself, shares his impressions of tasting Baikal omul, and touches on the geographic and cultural knowledge associated with it.

Juan Minto enjoys sharing with his students his impressions of the customs and traditions he received during his studies in Russia: from the strict theatre culture to the cultural and logical differences behind the idea that “Russians don’t like to smile.” He presents all of this in an engaging way during his classes. He has also become a “recommender” of Russian TV series and films: the TV series “Kitchen” and the cartoon “Once Upon a Time There Was a Dog” have become living teaching material for his students outside of the classroom. Watching visual content helps them improve their language skills and cultural understanding without even realizing it.

“Our classes are always very lively. Teacher Juan makes learning the language interesting, and the knowledge is absorbed unnoticeably. We not only master the language, but also feel the unique charm of Russian culture,” shared one of the first-year students.

Language as a boat connecting China and other countries. As the director of one of the projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China to translate Chinese academic literature into foreign languages, Huang Mingtuo devoted himself to translating and promoting the cultural history of the Yuan Dynasty in Russian-speaking countries.

“During the Yuan Dynasty, China and Russia had official contacts. The Mongolian region, as a unique geographical and cultural unit linking the two countries, has deep historical roots in their relations. The translation of the history of the Yuan Dynasty is intended to introduce the Russian-speaking world to this important chapter in the origins of our relations,” Huang Mingtuo said.

However, there are considerable difficulties in the translation process. Huang Mingtuo explained that the cultural history of the Yuan Dynasty contains a large number of Mongolian proper names and toponyms, whose Chinese spelling is itself a phonetic transcription from Mongolian. Therefore, before translating into Russian, it is necessary to first understand the Mongolian original.

Huang Mingtuo believes that the essence of translation is to “be understandable to native speakers,” so it is necessary to use expressions and logic familiar to Russian speakers. To this end, he specifically consulted and learned from graduate students who speak Mongolian and Russian. For specific ranks and names of institutions of the Yuan Dynasty that have no direct equivalents in Russian, Huang Mingtuo applied the method of “descriptive translation.”

Today’s witty and meticulous professor Juan Minto was himself a “hard-working student” more than a decade ago. During his undergraduate studies, in order not to disturb his classmates, he would constantly borrow textbooks and practice his pronunciation in a quiet corner of the classroom building corridor near a red fire hydrant. Students passing by would always hear the loud reading coming from there. Since then, he has been nicknamed “the senior at the fire hydrant.”

From a “senior student at a fire hydrant” to a “carrier of cultures between China and Russia,” Huang Mingtuo is full of confidence in the future of students studying Russian. Under multilateral mechanisms such as the SCO, BRICS, and the China-Central Asia mechanism, China’s cooperation with many Russian-speaking countries is deepening, opening up boundless opportunities.

“Teaching foreign languages has two missions: introducing China to the world and introducing China to the world. In the future, I will continue to use language as a boat and culture as a sail to cultivate more Russian language experts, so that Chinese stories can be turned into poetry, so that the light of dialogue can illuminate the mountains and seas, and so that every interaction between citizens of the two countries can become a bright drop on the crest of the wave of the era,” Huang Mingtuo said. -0-

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Qinhuangdao Port: China’s example of industrial port harmoniously combining with green development

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: People’s Republic of China in Russian – People’s Republic of China in Russian –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) — In early summer, azure waves ripple gently across the Qinhuangdao Port in north China’s Hebei Province, reflecting the bustling skyline of a modern port.

As an industrial port bay, the major port of Qinhuangdao, which specializes in the export of thermal coal, has previously faced significant pressure to combat pollution. However, a set of decisive measures, including environmental control at all stages of coal transportation through the port, the development of new energy areas, greening and the transformation of old industrial areas into tourist parks, have promoted the symbiosis and joint prosperity of the industrial port and the beautiful harbor.

    COAL PORT “WITHOUT A SPECKLE”

The 27.66-kilometer coastline of Qinhuangdao Harbor runs from east to west, with much of it taken up by industrial port zones. This vital energy corridor handles about 500,000 tons of coal daily.

Advanced environmental technologies are applied throughout the entire production cycle “unloading – storage – collection – loading” from the moment the coal train arrives until the cargo ship departs.

In the eastern part of Qinhuangdao Port, a long train loaded with coal slowly pulls into a covered wagon dumper building. Three wagons with 240 tons of coal are instantly “caught” by the dumper, and after a 150-degree turn, the coal is completely unloaded. The entire process from the entry of the train to the completion of unloading takes less than 3 minutes, with virtually no coal dust visible in the air.

“I didn’t expect that coal unloading could be so clean and efficient, without a speck of dust, so to speak,” said retired former port worker Sun Xiuben.

After transportation on closed conveyor belts, the coal is delivered to warehouses enclosed by dust screens. Wang Shuai, senior manager of the environmental health department of Qinhuangdao Port JSC, explained that the main pollutants in the port area are large coal particles. To reduce the spread of dust, closed coal conveyors cover the entire area, and dust collection devices are installed at all transshipment points. Dust suppression systems on wagon dumpers, stackers and collecting machines work synchronously with intelligent watering and vacuuming machines running around the warehouses, preventing and suppressing dust.

Monitoring data for 2024 show that the comprehensive air quality index of Qinhuangdao Port was 4.03, down 5 percent year on year; PM10 levels dropped 14.3 percent; and total suspended particulate matter decreased 10.1 percent.

    CREATION OF PORT-GARDENS

Qinhuangdao Port is also betting on new energy and new landscapes, creating a garden port.

In the eastern area of the port, containers with shore power supply systems have been installed. Large vessels can be connected directly to the terminal’s power grid after mooring, switching off auxiliary diesel generators, which significantly reduces emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere during berthing and increases energy efficiency.

In addition, Qinhuangdao Port has built a 3.55MW distributed photovoltaic system, with an annual output of about 3 million kW. The port has also steadily increased the proportion of green electricity purchased. In 2024, Qinhuangdao Port purchased about 240 million kW of green electricity, accounting for 80% of the total consumption and equivalent to a reduction of 199,800 tons of CO2 emissions.

Entering the Guanhai Garden /Sea Viewing Garden/ in the port area, you feel a fresh and pleasant atmosphere. Greenery, flowers, paths, benches made from recycled old parts create a comfortable green space for visitors and port staff.

In 2018, Qinhuangdao Port established a comprehensive monitoring system covering the entire coastline of the port, which is responsible for coastal cleanliness, coastal ecology restoration, and promoting the construction of a garden port.

SYNERGY OF ECOLOGY, INDUSTRY AND CULTURE

During the May Day holiday this year, the Qinhuangdao Port Industrial and Tourism Zone received a record 254,700 visitors, up 247 percent from the same period last year and setting a new record for visits during the holiday.

Former coal piers, old rails and industrial equipment have become tourist attractions. “It’s both a port and an industrial museum. These ‘steel monsters’ have an industrial aesthetic, every shot is a masterpiece,” said Huang Ying, an amateur photographer from Tianjin, northern China.

The 127-year-old western area of Qinhuangdao Port is the founding site of the port and Qinhuangdao City itself, witnessing the birth and development of China’s modern industry. In the course of upgrading the port and optimizing its functional zoning, old buildings were reconstructed, greenery was planted, and an industrial and tourist zone was created.

The historical appearance of the century-old port has been given a new lease of life by modern elements. The intertwining of old rails surrounded by flowers has created a unique sea of flowers; the pier for ships has been transformed into a bay for yachts and sailboats, where tourists can experience the joy of sailing; old warehouses have become cafes and exhibition halls; and such areas as themed products, local cuisine, photo sessions and guest houses are being developed.

Li Xiuping, a resident of a neighborhood near the port’s industrial and tourist area, often takes walks by the sea with her family. “The old port is gradually turning into a fashionable tourist area, and more and more tourists are coming here. The port has not only given us a beautiful and comfortable coastal environment, but also given new impetus to the development of the city,” she said.

Qinhuangdao, using the harbor as a link, combines ecology, industry and culture into a single chain of integrated development. The positive cycle of “improving the ecology – enriching the people and prospering the city – making the harbor even more beautiful” is rapidly gaining momentum. -0-

Starbucks China is making its third consecutive appearance at the China International Supply Chain Expo held in Beijing from Wednesday to Sunday, signaling its strong commitment to sustainable development and the localization of its supply chain strategy.

This year, Starbucks expanded its exhibition footprint with creative green initiatives in partnership with Envision Group, a global leader in renewable energy systems.

The coffee chain is showcasing its end-to-end sustainability efforts, ranging from responsible sourcing to green retail operations.

For the first time, Starbucks’ ready-to-drink business is also being featured, signaling a maturing local supply chain and its broader push to elevate its brand value under a tailored “China Model”.

“Starbucks’ ongoing participation in the expo reflects our long-term vision to root our business in China while driving high-quality, sustainable growth along with our suppliers and across the coffee industry,” said Stephen Fung, vice-president of Starbucks China Supply Chain, Project and Innovation. “We are building a sustainable supply chain through digital and green transformations to boost our growth in the future.”

As part of its expanded collaboration with Envision, Starbucks is prioritizing the creation of a green supply chain network, setting new benchmarks in emissions reduction and industry best practices. Research shows that nearly 70 percent of value chain carbon emissions occur upstream. In response, Starbucks is working closely with suppliers through a carbon reduction alliance to address these challenges collectively, said the company.

At the heart of its emissions strategy is the adoption of Envision’s digital carbon management system which measures carbon footprints across core operations and supplier networks.

The system is currently in pilot use and will be rolled out across all direct and key indirect suppliers over the next three years, with the goal of mapping the full carbon footprint of thousands of products and implementing customized carbon reduction pathways.

The company’s sustainability practices span the entire coffee value chain. In Yunnan province, Starbucks has partnered with farmers on eco-friendly cultivation techniques, while in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, it operates the world’s most energy-efficient production and logistics facility.

In-store, Starbucks promotes a green lifestyle through initiatives such as biodegradable packaging and its green store certification program. Notably, all green-certified stores in China now operate using 100 percent renewable electricity.

In September 2023, Starbucks inaugurated its China coffee innovation park in Kunshan, Jiangsu province.

With an investment of 1.5 billion yuan ($209 million), the facility represents Starbucks’ largest overseas manufacturing investment to date and its most energy-efficient production base globally.

It marks the successful integration of a vertically aligned, bean-tocup supply chain.

  • MIL-OSI China: China women’s basketball team kicks off Universiade title defense with easy win

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

The Chinese women’s basketball team, the reigning champion, sealed a lop-sided 88-56 victory over Portugal in its first group match Friday at the FISU World University Games.

Shooting guard Chen Yujie dished out 19 points for China with efficient 28 minutes on the court, making seven out of nine attempts, including a 3-pointer. Forward Li Xingnuo buried three 3-pointers out of six attempts to add 16 points. Three more Chinese players scored in double-digit points.

Point guard Ines Ramos had a team-high 14 points from 11 shooting attempts. Forward Eva Carregosa was the only other Portuguese player contributing 10-plus points.

China opened the game with a 3-0 run, all coming from free throws before Portugal reinforced its attacks to level the score 14-14 with Maria Do Camo Cruz’s field goal. Carregosa’s consecutive five points from a 3-pointer and two free throws gave Portugal a 23-20 lead to wrap up the first quarter.

Starting strong in the second quarter with an 8-0 spurt, China contained Portugal to just four field goals throughout the quarter and built up a 46-33 advantage into the interval, outscoring Portugal by 26-10 in the period.

China maintained its momentum back into the court with a 6-0 to start the third quarter. Five straight points from Ramos’ layup and 3-pointer helped Portugal narrow the deficit to 56-40, but a follow-up 3-pointer from Li Qingyang and a buzzer-beater from Zhang Zihan handed China an 18-point lead. The game went into the final period by 61-43.

The final quarter was left to substitutes for both teams and the match ended with 88-56.

China grabbed a total of 42 rebounds, 16 more than their opponents, which partly defined the direction of the game.

“We met Portugal at the Chengdu Universiade in 2023, so we somehow know their style,” said Chinese coach Zhao Xuetong, a basketball trainer from Beijing Normal University, where most of the Chinese players come.

“We are the (Universiade) titleholder, but the squad here is much different, and some top players called up two years ago are absent. Hopefully, we can play better and finish our campaign here on podium.”

In the other match in Group D, Romania snatched a narrow win of 64-60 over Chile. China will meet Romania and Portugal is to take on Chile on Saturday.
