Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a traditional dinner hosted by Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar during his visit to the Caribbean nation on Thursday.

In a symbolic gesture highlighting the cultural ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago, the dinner featured food served on a Sohari leaf- an element of cultural significance for the local community, particularly those of Indian descent.

Sharing details of the dinner on X, Prime Minister Modi said, “The dinner hosted by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had food served on a Sohari leaf, which is of great cultural significance to the people of Trinidad & Tobago, especially those with Indian roots. Here, food is often served on this leaf during festivals and other special programmes.”

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Port of Spain marks the second stop on his ongoing five-nation tour. This is his first visit to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister, and the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Caribbean nation since 1999. The visit comes at the invitation of the Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister and aims to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.

  • MIL-OSI Banking: Development Asia: Strategic Fiscal Policy for Public Health: The Use of Health Tax in Asia and the Pacific

    Source: Asia Development Bank

The implementation of health taxes requires coordination and collaboration across different government agencies to ensure alignment and coherence across all sectors, particularly the Ministry of Finance (tax administration and design) and the Ministry of Health (advocating for health and evidence). Several countries in Asia and the Pacific have successfully implemented health tax strategies to improve public health and achieve health-financing goals.

    Case Study: the Philippines

The 2012 Sin Tax reform in the Philippines marked a landmark policy shift by introducing a unitary excise tax with scheduled increases annually on tobacco and alcohol products. The reform was framed as a health policy reform rather than revenue generation. It adopted a strong intergovernmental approach, with active collaboration from the Ministry of Finance and Department of Health. The reform received tremendous support from both the public and government agencies. Between 2012 and 2018, prices of tobacco products increased by 113%, which led to a 30% plunge in smoking prevalence among adults and a 10%–18% drop among young adolescents in 2009–2021. This tax scheme also tripled tax revenues, reaching almost $3 billion in 2022.

Despite these gains, the percentage share of health taxes remains limited, and the tobacco products are still relatively affordable due to the stagnant annual tax adjustment. The initial plan to adjust the tax every year according to inflation and population growth has not been applied, leading to limitations in deterring consumption. This emphasizes the importance of adjusting health tax rates in response to inflation, so the real value of the tax is maintained at the appropriate level.[1]

    Case Study: Thailand

Thailand’s sugar-sweetened beverages tax, reformed in 2017 by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, and Thailand Health Promotion Foundation, represents another benchmark. It introduced a tiered-tax approach, where specific tax rates on sugar content and ad valorem (based on value) taxes were applied.

The new ad valorem tax was reduced from 20% to a range of 0%–14% based on the type of beverage (e.g., 10% for fruit-related drinks). An additional specific tax rate was also used to adjust for sugar content, where beverages with more than 6 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters are taxed at higher rates than those with lower sugar content. During the first phase of implementation, average sugar content in beverages significantly dropped from 16.7g to 10.6g per 100ml.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the impact of this tax on low-income populations. This situation emphasizes the need for clear and strategic communication to ensure transparency in monitoring and evaluation.

  • MIL-OSI China: Teenage star Estevao in spotlight as Palmeiras face Chelsea

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira says teenage winger Estevao won’t be distracted when he faces future club Chelsea in Friday’s Club World Cup quarterfinal.

Estevao is set to join the Premier League side after the tournament, but the 18-year-old remains focused on the Brazilian club’s title push, according to Ferreira.

Palmeiras’ Estevao (L) vies with Botafogo’s Vitinho during the round of 16 football match between Brazil’s Palmeiras and Brazil’s Botafogo at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in Philadelphia, the United States, June 28, 2025. (Xinhua/Wu Xiaoling)

“He and the club already knew that this could happen when negotiations were taking place,” Ferreira told reporters on the eve of the match.

“He will do what he has always done and he doesn’t need the coach to tell him anything. He won’t play alone, nobody plays alone. We run for each other, we lose for each other and we win for each other.”

Estevao is yet to register a goal or an assist in the tournament, but Ferreira said the Brazil international had been vital in Palmeiras’ march to the last eight. He expects another influential performance from his brightest star in Philadelphia.

“He will do what he has always done and while he is with us, he will have tasks to fulfill,” Ferreira said. “After his time at Palmeiras ends, he will fulfill them in the new group.”

Palmeiras reached the quarterfinals by beating Brazilian rivals Botafogo 1-0 in the round of 16 while Chelsea advanced with a 4-1 extra-time win over Benfica.

Despite admitting Palmeiras’ status as underdog, Ferreira said his players were daring to dream.

“We have to be realistic and say that Chelsea is better than Palmeiras,” the 46-year-old said. “They bought our best player [Estevao]. That says it all.”

“But it does not invalidate the fact that we have the weapons and ambitions to face our opponents within our resources and strategies. Success for me is when I go to bed knowing that I gave my best. Whether I win or lose, it is the feeling that I gave my all to beat Chelsea.

“We’re going to do our best tomorrow. We have a dream and we’re going to fight for that dream. We’ll keep our eyes open and fight until the end,” Ferreira added.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Infrastructure Minister to visit United States

    Source: New Zealand Government

Infrastructure, Transport and Housing Minister Chris Bishop will travel to New York and Texas tomorrow for a range of meetings across housing, planning, urban development and transport, including a keynote speech at the Urban Design Forum’s Global Exchange Programme.

“In New York I will be holding a series of meetings with city officials and other stakeholders about their introduction of congestion pricing. The early results for New York are very promising, and with legislation allowing time of use charging schemes in New Zealand soon to report back from select committee, I look forward to bringing home lessons learned to ensure our scheme is a success from the start,” Mr Bishop says.

“While in New York, I will meet with Professor Edward Glaeser, a leading global expert on urban economics, to discuss how governments can support affordable, thriving, and productive cities. I will also deliver a keynote speech at the Urban Design Forum’s Global Exchange Programme, highlighting the Coalition Government’s efforts to create a well-functioning urban land and housing system. The Forum is a network of over 1,000 civic leaders committed to making New York a better place to live – a goal I strongly share for New Zealand.

“I will also spend a couple of days in Houston, Texas, the home of affordable housing in the United States. My engagements will focus on conversations with government agencies and local experts about their planning system and funding and financing tools which have seen the city make significant gains in delivering affordable housing.

“The Government’s ‘Going for Housing Growth’ policy draws lessons from the flexible land markets enabled by a liberal planning system in jurisdictions like Texas and I am looking forward to discussing this with local experts.”

Mr Bishop departs for the United States on Saturday 5 July and will return on Sunday 13 July.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Employment – Uber drivers to rally at Supreme Court as appeal heard – Workers First Union

    Source: Workers First Union

WHAT: Workers First Union Uber drivers will be rallying outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday morning as Uber’s appeal begins in Wellington over a 2022 Employment Court case that found four drivers had been misclassified as contractors rather than employees of the company.
    WHEN: Tuesday 8 July, 09:00-09:30
WHERE: Outside the Supreme Court, 85 Lambton Quay, between Ballance & Whitmore Street, Wellington 6011
    WHY:
Dennis Maga, Workers First Union General Secretary, said that the Uber case, which had first been won by drivers in 2022, was the most significant employment case in recent New Zealand history and would have major ramifications for contractors and the ‘gig economy’.
“The Employment Court and the Court of Appeal have already ruled that Uber drivers should be entitled to real employment protections like a minimum wage, sick leave, and the right to bargain collectively with Uber over wages and conditions as they already have to do in many overseas jurisdictions,” said Mr Maga.
“Uber’s entire strategy is to misclassify themselves as a ‘tech company’ rather than a transport provider, to misclassify drivers as independent contractors, and to mislead politicians with bad faith arguments about “flexibility” to limit their responsibility to our country and economy.”
“Uber drivers deserve real employment protections, and we sincerely hope that the Supreme Court will scrutinise the company’s arguments carefully and reaffirm the standard set in the Employment Court’s original verdict.”
Mr Maga said hundreds of Uber drivers have joined Workers First since the Employment Court’s 2022 verdict and the union has lodged backpay claims for underpaid wages and leave on their behalf.
    Background information
    • A new report released this week by the Centre for International Corporate Tax Accountability and Research (CICTAR) and commissioned by Workers First Union, argues that Uber appears to be shifting hundreds of millions in misclassified profits out of New Zealand, costing the country millions in tax revenue.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Arrest landmark for Met officers using Live Facial Recognition

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

More than 1,000 wanted criminals have now been arrested by the Metropolitan Police Service using Live Facial Recognition (LFR), including paedophiles, rapists and violent robbers.

Among these arrests are more than 100 individuals allegedly involved in serious violence against women and girls (VAWG) offences such as strangulation, stalking, domestic abuse, and rape.

The Met is taking the lead in utilising this technology to make London safer, using it to identify and apprehend offenders that pose a significant risk to its communities. Of those arrested, a total of 773 have been charged or cautioned.

These offenders may otherwise have remained unlawfully at large, posing a continued threat to the public and taking up much more officer time to locate them.

LFR is helping to apprehend wanted criminals in London and catch those who are breaking bail conditions without the need for extensive police resources or frequent visits.

Lindsey Chiswick, lead for LFR at the Met and nationally, said:

“This milestone of 1,000 arrests is a demonstration of how cutting-edge technology can make London safer by removing dangerous offenders from our streets.

“Live Facial Recognition is a powerful tool, which is helping us deliver justice for victims, including those who have been subjected to horrendous offences, such as rape and serious assault.

“It is not only saving our officers’ valuable time but delivering faster, more accurate results to catch criminals – helping us be more efficient than ever before.”

Each deployment is made up of an LFR team as well as a number of neighbourhood officers in the vicinity to talk to those identified and make necessary arrests.

LFR interventions don’t always result in arrest. The tool is often used to stop people who are flagged from the watchlist who have conditions imposed by the courts. These might include registered sex offenders and those convicted of stalking, among others.

These interventions are crucial as they are another way of police ensuring people are adhering to their conditions. In turn, communities are kept safer as a result.

The technology allows officers to catch offenders breaking their conditions which otherwise may have gone unnoticed. This is a unique and revolutionary way of policing.

In London, a breach of conditions has been identified 21% of the time.

In total, 93 registered sex offenders have been arrested by Met officers as part of the 1,035 arrests seen since the start of 2024 using LFR.

    Case studies

On Friday, 10 January, a police van with LFR was operating in the Denmark Hill area, when cameras alerted officers to 73-year-old David Cheneler as being a registered sex offender. Upon being stopped by officers, he was found to be with a six-year-old girl.

Further checks confirmed he was in breach of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO ), which prevented him from being alone with a child under the age of 14.

He was arrested and taken into custody.

David Cheneler, 73 (05.04.52), of Lewisham, appeared at Kingston Crown Court on Tuesday, 20 May, where he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.

He pleaded guilty at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 13 January to breaching the conditions of his SOPO, as well as possessing an offensive weapon.

On Friday, 10 January 2025, police were called to a report of a robbery at a restaurant on Uxbridge Road, Hayes.

Adenola Akindutire posed as a buyer of a rolex watch on Facebook marketplace. When he met up with the seller, Akindtire produced a machete, attacked the seller, and stole the watch. The victim, a man in his 30s, sustained life-changing injuries.

Akindutire was then linked to another incident, with similar circumstances, on Monday, 16 December 2024.

    Akindutire was released on bail.

On Tuesday, 15 April 2025, Akindtire was stopped during a Live Facial Recognition operation in Stratford and arrested. He produced a false passport in an attempt to evade the arrest.

Comparison with previous custody images confirmed his true identity and he was arrested. Akindutire could have otherwise evaded arrest and still be unlawfully at large if it wasn’t for the LFR alert.

Akindutire, 22 (15.04.2003), of no fixed address, was charged and pleaded guilty to robbery, attempted robbery, grievous bodily harm, possession of a false identity document and two counts of possession of a bladed article when he appeared at Isleworth Crown Court on Wednesday, 14 May 2025.

He is due to be sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday, 22 August 2025.

On Friday, 23 May, an LFR deployment in Dalston Kingsland alerted when Darren Dubarry walked past.

Dubarry was wanted for theft and when searched by officers at the deployment, was in possession of designer clothing which was stolen from Stratford earlier that day.

The use of LFR in this case not only identified a wanted offender but caught him in the act of committing another offence. He was arrested by officers and later charged.

Dubarry, 50 (30.07.1974), of Stewart Road, Stratford, pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods on Saturday, 24 May at East London Magistrates’ Court, where he was issued with a £120 fine, and a £48 victim surcharge.

    How does LFR work?

The cameras capture live footage of people passing by and compare their faces against a bespoke watchlist of wanted offenders.

If a match is detected, the system generates an alert. An officer will then review the match and decide if they wish to speak with the individual.

Met officers conduct further checks, such as reviewing court orders or other relevant information, to determine if the person is a suspect.

Importantly, an alert from the system does not automatically result in an arrest – officers make a decision about whether further action is necessary following engagement.

The Met has also implemented robust safeguards in its use of LFR.

For example, if a member of the public walks past an LFR camera and is not wanted by the police, their biometrics are immediately and permanently deleted.

The Met continues to engage with residents and councillors across London.

These sessions provide an open platform for discussion, allowing The Met to explain how LFR works, the intelligence-led process behind deployments, and the safeguards in place to protect people’s rights to privacy.

A new way for Londoners to hear about policing in their area is being rolled out by the Met.

Local officers will use Met Engage to provide crime prevention advice, updates on ongoing incidents and investigations, and information about successful outcomes and operations.

URUMQI, July 4 (Xinhua) — The passenger flow through the Takeshken checkpoint on the Chinese-Mongolia border approached 80,000 person-times in the first half of this year, up 5 percent year-on-year, the local border service said.

In particular, the share of foreigners in the incoming and outgoing passenger flow through this road border crossing during the reporting period was 97 percent. Among them are citizens of Mongolia, Russia, France, Switzerland and more than 20 other countries. Most of them crossed the border through Takeshken for tourist trips, and the rest – to visit relatives, hold business meetings, etc.

Takeshken is located in Qinghe County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR, northwest China) and is the region’s largest checkpoint on the border with Mongolia.

Thanks to China’s optimization of visa-free policy and the development of China-Mongol cross-border tourism and trade, Takeshken has seen a continuous increase in passenger traffic, cargo traffic and the number of vehicles passing through since the beginning of this year.

The local border service promised to do everything necessary to ensure uninterrupted passenger and cargo flow through the checkpoint. -0-

Congressman Keith Self released the following statement today after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the “Big Beautiful Bill.” Congressman Self voted in the affirmative. Having passed both chambers of Congress, the bill will now head to President Trump’s desk to be signed into law.

“President Trump has shown true leadership by listening to all voices involved with making the Big Beautiful Bill a success for the American people. Multiple spending issues have now been addressed, and with that, I am confident that we can move forward to ensure that this historic piece of legislation will have a lasting impact for future generations,” Congressman Keith Self said. “While the bill is not perfect, there are significant conservative wins the House Freedom Caucus has achieved, including, among other things, securing nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid savings. HFC moved the bill dramatically to the right on almost every front and at every stage of the process, including overnight, as a small group of us continued working with the White House to address critical policy and spending issues. President John F. • MIL-OSI Russia: “We love life and each other – simple, clear, understandable”

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Novosibirsk State University – Novosibirsk State University –

July 8 is Family, Love and Fidelity Day in Russia. Despite the fact that Novosibirsk State University is quite young, many family dynasties have formed within its walls. In anticipation of the holiday, we interviewed Irina Georgievna and Evgeny Ivanovich Palchikov, professors of the Department of General Physics Physics Department of NSU, they recently celebrated their golden anniversary together. The couple told us a touching and heartfelt story about how they met, what path they have taken together, what life principles helped them overcome all difficulties and what they think about the future.

    — How did you meet?

    — Irina Georgievna: It’s quite banal. I was a first-year student at the Physics Department of NSU, and some of my friends were in the Mathematics Department, and we lived in the 6th dormitory. Sometimes we would drop in on each other to chat and have some tea. The girls were neat and thrifty in the German way, pleasant conversationalists, you could always relax with them, trying buns or cookies that they baked themselves. It was at one of these tea parties that I saw a physicist who was selflessly adjusting the antenna of an old TV (which was, indeed, not easy). My friend said that it was Zheka and that he would join us when the TV started working. But this did not happen during my presence. Most likely, he did not even notice me.

    — Evgeny Ivanovich: I didn’t notice much at the time. I was in my fifth year. Radiative recombinations in Gunn diodes, lasers that Zhores Alferov and his colleagues brought and that needed to be tested in liquid nitrogen, heading the laboratories of the physics workshop at the Physics and Mathematics School, a special course at the Physics and Mathematics School, and even a diploma.

    — What attracted you to each other?

    — Irina Georgievna: We noticed each other much later, four years later, when, as they say, the time had come for a change. Summer school of the Physics and Mathematics School, my friend from the Faculty of Mathematics and I work as teachers and live in the same room. It is August outside, warm days alternate with warm rains, after lunch we go to the beach with the schoolchildren, and in the evening you can walk along the cool forest paths. The atmosphere is conducive to acquaintances and conversations. Evgeny Ivanovich graduated from the Physics and Mathematics School at NSU and, of course, understood very well the meaning and process of solving the problems that we analyzed with the schoolchildren. I graduated from Secondary School 176 in Novosibirsk and began teaching at the age of 12. The thing is that at that time it was customary to “pull up” the poor students, of whom there were plenty in our class, and I, a future gold medalist, was assigned to conduct additional classes with them. So Evgeny Ivanovich and I had a lot to talk about.

We got married in the spring of 1975. Our friends turned this event into a real Komsomol wedding, where everyone had fun and felt comfortable. Pleasant music, congratulations from relatives, funny pranks for the youth and, of course, delicious food.

    — What is the basis of your relationship?

    — Irina Georgievna: This is a very correct formulation of the question. The basis is always and in everything innate, and not acquired or nurtured qualities and forms of behavior. Evgeny Ivanovich and I had and have the same innate ideas about the relationship of genders in the family, which were supported by the family relationships of our parents and all the generations of our genealogy. That is, for us, the family is the only possible organization of life. We can say that our family is a typical example of an East Slavic family, we love life and each other – simple, clear, understandable.

Fate was not particularly kind to us. Our only beloved daughter was born. And one can say that our life is a road of changes. We walked through life along the path we chose at the beginning. Each of us worked hard and persistently in our chosen specialty, despite social storms and collapses in the country. We remained faithful to our ancestors, fatherland and calling. And not all of our friends managed to do this, who flew to different cities, countries and continents…

    — Which of your spouse’s professional achievements do you consider the most significant?

    — Evgeny Ivanovich: There are many achievements. Let’s start with the queen of the physics department J. At work — candidate, then doctor of technical sciences. Head of the laboratory at KTI NP SB RAS. At NSU — deputy dean of the physics department. In the family — she raised not only a daughter, but seriously participated in the upbringing and education of four grandchildren. And also household chores are a serious burden.

    — Irina Georgievna: Evgeny Ivanovich is a famous Russian scientist. Here are just some of his achievements: research into the first Gunn diodes in the USSR, created at the ISP SB RAS in 1970-1972. The average person doesn’t know about them, but now they are the main device in every speedometer in the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate and in road cameras, as well as in satellite dishes. Participation in the creation of the first CMOS photomatrix in the USSR in 1977, manufactured at NEVI (NPO Vostok) and in Novosibirsk. Then not for cameras, but for reading the information matrix in the holographic memory of a computer. Such memory was created at the IAP SB RAS. Development and creation in the 1970s-1980s of the first molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) installation in the USSR by the IAP jointly with NPO Vostok. Before the creation of MBE installations at the ISP SB RAS. Development and subsequent factory production of a series of pulsed X-ray devices of the PIR-600 series for the study of fast-flowing and explosive processes. All testing grounds and explosive laboratories of the USSR were provided with these devices.

Evgeny Ivanovich: A lot was done at the Physics and Mathematics School and NSU as well. In 1970-1974, he devised and constructed a number of original laboratory works for the physics practical course of the Physics and Mathematics School at NSU. He taught physics at the Physics and Mathematics School at NSU for 20 years — from 1974 to 1994. He created the Department of Natural Sciences of the Higher College of Informatics at NSU when it was organized and then headed it from 1992 to 1999. From 1985 to the present (40 years), I have been teaching at NSU. Since 2014, I have been the head of the Department of Continuous Media Physics at the Physics and Mathematics School of NSU. But I consider the following two to be my main achievements at NSU. Firstly, from 1975 to the present, I have been giving lectures with physical experiments at the summer physics and mathematics schools (SPMS) at NSU. 50 years every year — without a single absence. Secondly, from 1989 to the present time, I have been giving lectures on “Introduction to the Technique of Physical Experiments” at the Department of General Physics for first-year students of the Physics Department of NSU. Over 35 years, more than 5.5 thousand students have passed through me – future physicists and not only physicists. I hope that what I told, and most importantly – showed in experiments, left something in their heads and influenced their further understanding of the surrounding reality.

    — How do you manage to find a balance between family life, teaching and research activities?

    — Irina Georgievna: It’s easy, we don’t look for balance, we just live.

    — What are you most grateful to your parents for?

    — Irina Georgievna: I will not describe the fate of my parents, which is the same as the fate of millions of Siberians. The main lesson I learned in early childhood concerns interethnic relations. My native Novosibirsk is a city of four winds, a crossroads of all roads: railways, highways, nomadic roads, and river roads. The post-war 1950s were very difficult and challenging for residents. Our family lived on 1-aya Shkolnaya Street (which no longer exists), two-story timber houses were surrounded by fences, so that a small closed world was formed in each yard. And in our yard there was its own international: Russians, exiled Germans, gypsies, Mordvins, Tatars, Ukrainians — they lived very cramped, without loud quarrels or scandals. And we — children — played as a single crowd. And the main thing was not to offend anyone, so that everything was fair. I remember how in the common hallway my grandmother made an agreement with her neighbor: “Come on, you won’t do the laundry on Saturday, and I won’t wash the floor on Friday…”

Evgeny Ivanovich. Since childhood, I was surrounded by technology of all kinds. My father, a pilot and aircraft mechanic, was demobilized in the city of Leovo, then in the Moldavian SSR, where I was born in 1949. My mother was born in the village of Bely Kolodez. When I was 2 years old, the family moved to the Altai Territory, where my father was from. In Biysk, my father worked as an engineer at a boiler plant, managed the construction of facilities at a huge plant in Biysk for the production of missiles (RSM-52) for Typhoon submarines, and a brick factory. My mother worked in the laboratories of a boiler plant. We lived in Biysk in the private sector in a house that my father and his relatives built. On the street, all the children were like brothers.

    — What talents do you see in your children and grandchildren, what are you proud of?

    — Irina Georgievna: Our descendants are an extension of ourselves. And we always understood what exactly we needed to help them with, what to teach them, where to direct them. We have four beloved grandchildren, whom we taught a lot, helped them choose their specialization. And one of the moments that pleasantly surprised me was the following. In the second year of MIPT, where our eldest granddaughter (a gold medalist) studies, the teacher announced: “And you will study this material based on I. G. Palchikova’s publication.” “What!? That’s my grandmother!” — the granddaughter’s reaction was immediate.

    — What is the difference between raising children and raising grandchildren? Is it true for you that grandchildren are loved more than children?

    — Irina Georgievna: I don’t see any difference. We cared equally for our daughter and grandchildren. We didn’t lecture them, we just found a place in our hearts for all of them.

    — What is the secret of a happy family life? How to work on your relationship so that it is harmonious and brings happiness to both?

    — Irina Georgievna: It seems that I have already answered these questions. I can only clarify. All the secrets have been revealed many times in ancient fairy tales: “there is no happiness beyond the sea, look for it nearby.” Happiness is not eternal or continuous: “prepare the sleigh in the summer,” “if you like to ride down the hill, love to pull the sleigh.” And the main thing is that life does not end tomorrow.

We would like to thank the Palchikov family and Zhanna Yakovlevna Ermola, Deputy Dean of the NSU Physics Faculty for extracurricular and educational work, and Head of the NSU Social Department, for their help in preparing the interview.

  • PM Modi visits Trinidad, home to 42% Indian-origin population

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Port of Spain on Thursday, marking the second stop of his ongoing five-nation tour. During his visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold high-level discussions with the top leadership of Trinidad and Tobago to further strengthen bilateral ties.

    Historical ties rooted in migration

The bond between India and Trinidad and Tobago traces back to the mid-19th century, when the subcontinent contributed nearly 143,000 indentured workers to Trinidad between 1845 and 1917. The majority hailed from Northern India, particularly from present-day Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Many descendants still take pride in identifying their ancestral villages, districts (Zila), and fiscal units (Pargana).

While these workers originally came for contractual labour lasting three to five years, most chose to stay, with approximately 134,183 Indians ultimately settling and shaping the country’s cultural and social fabric.

Over time, this community has moved beyond its origins in agriculture and indentured labour. Today, people of Indian descent- who make up about 42% of Trinidad and Tobago’s 1.4 million population- are active across sectors including business, law, politics, medicine, and academia. The transformation from indentureship to entrepreneurship reflects not only economic progress but also the enduring cultural and emotional ties with India.

In addition to this historic community, there are also around 500 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in Trinidad and Tobago, many of whom are engaged in business and teaching. Indian presence in the local economy is further strengthened by Indian enterprises like New India Assurance, which operates in the insurance sector. Regular trade fairs showcasing Indian garments, handicrafts, and furniture have also helped popularise Indian products.

The Indian diaspora remains the largest in the Caribbean, noted for its strong cultural identity and economic success. These close cultural and people-to-people ties continue to support the historical relationship between India and Trinidad and Tobago.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas: celebrating overseas Indians

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is observed every year on January 9 to acknowledge the contributions of the overseas Indian community in India’s growth story. Since 2015, the PBD Convention is organised every two years, along with theme-based regional conferences in between. These events provide a platform for the diaspora to connect with India through knowledge sharing, investments and collaborations.

The President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Carla Kangaloo, was virtually the Chief Guest at the 18th PBD in Bhubaneswar and was conferred the PBSA during India’s Republic Day celebrations in 2025.

During the 17th PBD Convention in Indore in January 2023, High Court Justice Frank Seepersad from Trinidad and Tobago received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA)- India’s highest honour for overseas Indians. Over the years, prominent figures from Trinidad and Tobago like former Prime Ministers Basdeo Panday (2005) and Kamla Persad-Bissessar (2012), as well as former Ministers Winston Dookeran (2017) and Dr. Lenny Krishendath Saith (2010), have also been recipients of the PBSA. The National Council for Indian Culture was similarly honoured in 2008.

The Ministry of External Affairs continues to engage with overseas Indians through various programmes. Among these is the Overseas Citizenship of India scheme, which allows eligible foreign nationals of Indian origin to register for special status and privileges in India. The Know India Programme offers diaspora youth a three-week opportunity to connect with their ancestral homeland and learn about India’s history, culture, economy and scientific achievements through study tours and interactions with experts.

  • World’s biggest climate fund ramps up investment plans

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

The world’s biggest multilateral climate fund said it will make its largest ever series of investments and speed up dealmaking as it looks to help poorer nations respond to global warming.

The Green Climate Fund’s plan to release about $1.2 billion for 17 projects mostly in Asia and Africa follows approval by shareholders including the United States at a meeting this week, against a fractious political backdrop that has seen development aid slashed.

Official development assistance could fall 17% this year after a 9% drop in 2024, the OECD said in a June report, led by hefty cuts to U.S. aid by President Donald Trump.

“At a time when collective climate action is more needed than ever, GCF is stepping up to deliver on its mandate,” GCF Co-Chair Seyni Nafo said in a statement.

The GCF disbursement includes $227 million for an initiative to expand green bond markets in 10 countries. Green bond markets are where companies raise capital for projects that limit climate change or otherwise benefit the environment.

In South Asia, it will invest $200 million in the India Green Finance Facility to scale renewables and energy efficiency, while in East Africa it will invest $150 million in the food system to support nearly 18 million people.

All the projects will bring the GCF investment portfolio to $18 billion across 133 countries. So far, countries have pledged $29.9 billion to the GCF and paid in $21 billion.

As well as releasing more money, the GCF board also approved plans to speed up its work with partner organisations, which can include accredited entities like other multilateral lenders and so-called Direct Access Entities in developing countries.

From an average 30 months to accredit a DAE, the aim is to shorten the time to nine months or less by overhauling its procedures, including carrying out much of the due diligence at the project stage.

  • Indian stock market opens marginally higher, Nifty above 25,400

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

The domestic benchmark indices opened marginally higher on Friday amid mixed global cues, with early buying seen in the IT, PSU bank and financial services sectors.

At around 9:34 am, the Sensex was trading 32.52 points, or 0.04 per cent, higher at 83,271.99, while the Nifty added 3.45 points, or 0.01 per cent, to reach 25,408.75.

According to analysts, the Nifty 50 opened on a positive note but failed to sustain its momentum, breaching its intraday support at 25,450 and forming a bearish candlestick pattern on the daily chart.

“This development may signal a potential trend reversal; however, further confirmation is awaited. A sustained move above 25,600 could pave the way for a rally toward 25,750,” said Hardik Matalia, Derivative Analyst at Choice Broking.

On the downside, immediate support is seen at 25,222 and 25,120, which could act as potential entry levels for long positions, he added.

Nifty Bank was up 9.90 points, or 0.02 per cent, at 56,801.85 in early trade.

The Nifty Midcap 100 index was trading at 59,771.65 after gaining 88.40 points, or 0.15 per cent. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index stood at 19,051.80, up 24.75 points, or 0.13 per cent.

Analysts said investors should watch for possible changes in the earnings growth trajectory, indications of which will emerge with the Q1 results expected soon. Outperformance is likely to be company-specific rather than sector-specific.

Among Sensex constituents, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, BEL, HDFC Bank and Hindustan Unilever Limited were the top gainers. Trent, Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra and Titan were among the top losers.

On the institutional front, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) extended their selling streak for the fourth consecutive day, offloading equities worth Rs 1,481.19 crore on July 3. In contrast, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) continued their buying activity, purchasing equities worth Rs 1,333.06 crore on the same day.

In Asian markets, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Japan, Seoul and Jakarta were trading in the red, while only China was trading in the green.

In the last trading session, the Dow Jones in the US closed at 44,828.53, up 344.11 points, or 0.77 per cent. The S&P 500 ended with a gain of 51.93 points, or 0.83 per cent, at 6,279.35, and the Nasdaq closed at 20,601.10, up 207.97 points, or 1.02 per cent.

Viram Shah, Founder and CEO of Vested Finance, said the US markets closed sharply higher on Thursday on the back of a stronger-than-expected jobs report, with 147,000 jobs added and unemployment dipping to 4.1 per cent. This helped push the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to record highs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a replica of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, along with holy water from the Saryu river and the Mahakumbh held in Prayagraj, during a dinner hosted by Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Thursday, underscoring the enduring cultural and spiritual ties between India and the Caribbean nation.

“At the dinner hosted by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, I presented a replica of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and holy water from the Saryu river as well as from the Mahakumbh held in Prayagraj. They symbolise the deep cultural and spiritual bonds between India and Trinidad & Tobago,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

“The dinner hosted by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had food served on a Sohari leaf, which is of great cultural significance to the people of Trinidad & Tobago, especially those with Indian roots. Here, food is often served on this leaf during festivals and other special programmes,” he added.

At the dinner in Port of Spain, PM Modi met Rana Mohip, who had sung ‘Vaishnava Jana To’ when India marked the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi a few years ago, appreciating his passion towards Indian music and culture.

PM Modi also shared glimpses of the cultural and historical ties between Trinidad & Tobago and India upon his landmark two-day visit to the Caribbean nation.

“A cultural connect like no other! Very happy to have witnessed a Bhojpuri Chautaal performance in Port of Spain. The connect between Trinidad & Tobago and India, especially parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar is noteworthy,” PM Modi said.

Upon his arrival, PM Modi was also given a ceremonial welcome with people enthusiastically dancing to the beat of drums and showcasing traditional music and performances that reflected a blend of local and Indian culture.

This is the second visit of Prime Minister Modi to the Caribbean region in 8 months; previously, the PM visited Guyana in November 2024. It shows the immense importance that India accords to the Caribbean countries and reflects India’s growing partnership with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

  • No progress at all, Trump says after phone call with Putin

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a phone call earlier in the day with Vladimir Putin resulted in no progress at all on efforts to end the war in Ukraine, while a Kremlin aide said the Russian president reiterated that Moscow would keep pushing to solve the conflict’s “root causes.”

The two leaders did not discuss a recent pause in some U.S. weapons shipments to Kyiv during the nearly hour-long conversation, according to a readout provided by Putin aide Yuri Ushakov.

U.S. attempts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine through diplomacy have largely stalled, and Trump has faced growing calls – including from some Republicans – to increase pressure on Putin to negotiate in earnest.

Within hours of the call’s conclusion, an apparent Russian drone attack sparked a fire in an apartment building in a northern suburb of Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said, indicating little change in the trajectory of the conflict.

In Kyiv itself, witnesses reported explosions and sustained heavy machine-gun fire as air defense units battled drones over the capital, while Russian shelling killed five people in the eastern part of the country.

“I didn’t make any progress with him at all,” Trump told reporters in brief comments at an air base outside Washington, before departing for a campaign-style event in Iowa.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, meanwhile, told reporters in Denmark earlier in the day that he hopes to speak to Trump as soon as Friday about the ongoing pause in some weapons shipments, which was first disclosed earlier this week.

Trump, speaking to reporters as he left Washington for Iowa, said “we haven’t” completely paused the weapons flow but blamed his predecessor, Joe Biden, for sending so many weapons that it risked weakening U.S. defenses.

“We’re giving weapons, but we’ve given so many weapons. But we are giving weapons. And we’re working with them and trying to help them, but we haven’t. You know, Biden emptied out our whole country giving them weapons, and we have to make sure that we have enough for ourselves,” he said.

The diplomatic back-and-forth comes as the U.S. has paused shipments of certain critical weapons to Ukraine due to low stockpiles, just as Ukraine faces a Russian summer offensive and increasingly frequent attacks on civilian targets.

Putin, for his part, has continued to assert he will stop his invasion only if the conflict’s “root causes” have been addressed – Russian shorthand for the issue of NATO enlargement and Western support for Ukraine, including the rejection of any notion of Ukraine joining the NATO alliance.

Russian leaders are also angling to establish greater control over political decisions made in Kyiv and other Eastern European capitals, NATO leaders have said.

The pause in U.S. weapons shipments caught Ukraine off-guard and has generated widespread confusion about Trump’s current views on the conflict, given his statement just last week that he would try to free up a Patriot missile defense system for use by Kyiv.

Ukrainian leaders called in the acting U.S. envoy to Kyiv on Wednesday to underline the importance of military aid from Washington, and caution that the pause in U.S. weapons shipments would weaken Ukraine’s ability to defend against intensifying Russian air strikes and battlefield advances.

The Pentagon’s move has meant a cut in deliveries of the Patriot defense missiles that Ukraine relies on to destroy fast-moving ballistic missiles, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Ushakov, the Kremlin aide, said that while Russia was open to continuing to speak with the U.S., any peace negotiations needed to occur between Moscow and Kyiv.

That comment comes amid some indications that Moscow is trying to avoid a trilateral format for any potential peace negotiations. The Russians asked American diplomats to leave the room during such a meeting in Istanbul in early June, Ukrainian officials have said.

Trump and Putin did not talk about a face-to-face meeting, Ushakov said.
