IPAA Supports Hoeven and Pfluger CRA to Block Implementation of Methane Tax

WASHINGTON – The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) issued the following statement on bicameral Congressional Review Act legislation introduced by Senator John Hoeven (R-ND) and Congressman August Pfluger (R-TX-11) to block implementation of the Biden Administration’s methane tax.

IPAA President & CEO Jeff Eshelman: “The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) appreciates and supports Senator Hoeven’s and Congressman Pfluger’s leadership to overturn the EPA’s Waste Emissions Charge (Methane Tax) regulations. The Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution introduced today will allow Congress to nullify the regulations the Biden Administration established to implement the misguided methane tax. The Biden Administration and Democrats in Congress passed the methane tax to single out and punish the oil and natural gas industry despite its already burdensome EPA regulatory framework. The tax was passed without appropriate understanding of its impact or industry safeguards.  IPAA has always opposed the methane tax and believe it is simply a tax designed to hamper American oil and gas production. We encourage Congress to work with the Trump Administration to eliminate this unnecessary tax on American oil and natural gas producers as soon as possible.”

IPAA also supports legislation led by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Congressman Pfluger to repeal the Methane Tax.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Date confirmed for Island’s MONEYVAL evaluation

    Source: Isle of Man

The next independent assessment of the Isle of Man’s effectiveness in countering financial crime is scheduled to take place next year.

MONEYVAL, the Committee of Experts on the Evaluation of Anti-Money Laundering Measures and the Financing of Terrorism, has confirmed that it will conduct its onsite evaluation of the Island in October 2026.

Preparations are already well advanced across multiple Government agencies, while industry involvement will be stepped up from Q2 of 2025.

The objective is to demonstrate that the Isle of Man complies with international standards and remains well placed to attract quality new business and investment. The outcome of the MONEYVAL mutual evaluation report (MER) will be crucial to the Island’s continued economic success and its reputation as a well-regulated international finance centre.

An updated National Risk Assessment will be published later this year alongside a documented Risk Appetite Statement for the Island. Data gathering and analysis is being enhanced as part of these initiatives to support the Island’s commitment to combating money laundering, the financing of terrorism and the financing of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

MONEYVAL, which is the regional body of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), assessed the Island’s legislation, policies and procedures during its last onsite visit in 2016. The 2016 MER provided a comprehensive assessment of how well the Island had implemented the international requirements and highlighted areas where further enhancements were required.

A significant amount of progress has been achieved since the 2016 evaluation, with the Island positively marked in 39 out of the 40 FATF recommendations, which places us among a select group of nations in the world for technical compliance in AML/CFT.

The standards for compliance in the sixth-round evaluation taking place in 2026 will be higher than before and require the Island to provide substantial evidence of the long-term effectiveness of its AML/CFT regime and how supervision and enforcement measures are applied in practice.

Private sector support is fundamental to the Island’s MONEYVAL preparations, and a programme of outreach and engagement with Island firms will continue to be rolled out in the time ahead.

Jane Poole-Wilson MHK, Deputy Chief Minister and AML/CFT lead for the Isle of Man Government, said: ‘Countering financial crime is a constant, year-round commitment for this Government. We take our responsibilities in protecting our communities and businesses from criminality seriously. The MONEYVAL evaluation in 2026 is an opportunity to showcase our continued efforts to remain a trusted and responsible member of the global community.’

She added: ‘Government cannot secure a positive outcome alone. That’s why I am keen to ensure effective collaboration between industry, the government and the financial services regulator. We are driving a robust and co-ordinated national response which will demonstrate the integrity of the Island’s financial systems and maintain our long-standing track record of compliance with international standards.’

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Grenada: 2024 Article IV Consultation-Press Release; Staff Report; and Statement by the Executive Director for Grenada

    Source: International Monetary Fund

    Summary

Through end-June 2024, Grenada’s economy was experiencing sustained strong growth supported by buoyant tourism, moderating inflation, and a narrowing current account deficit. A surge in Citizenship-by-Investment (CBI) revenue supported a strong improvement in budget balances, a build-up of government deposits, and a reduction in public debt. On July 1, Hurricane Beryl caused damage in excess of 16 percent of GDP on the Grenadian islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, as well as in the northern parishes of the main island, affecting around 15 percent of the population. In response, the authorities triggered the suspension of fiscal rules to permit temporary deficit spending in support of the recovery and reconstruction.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: IMF Executive Board Concludes 2024 Article IV Consultation with Grenada

    Source: International Monetary Fund

    February 4, 2025

Washington, DC: On January 24, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) concluded the Article IV consultation[1] with Grenada.

Through end-June 2024, Grenada’s economy was experiencing sustained strong growth supported by buoyant tourism, moderating inflation, and a narrowing current account deficit. A surge in Citizenship-by-Investment (CBI) revenue supported a strong improvement in the fiscal position and reduction in public debt. The financial system remained stable. On July 1, Hurricane Beryl caused damage in excess of 16 percent of GDP on the Grenadian islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, as well as in the northern parishes of the main island. The authorities responded swiftly with a package of fiscal measures, including suspension of fiscal rules to permit temporary deficit spending in support of the recovery and reconstruction.

Grenada’s near-term economic growth is projected to remain resilient at 3.9 percent in 2025, buoyed by limited hurricane damages to tourism infrastructure and the authorities’ large recovery and reconstruction spending. Sizable government savings and triggering of disaster-contingent instruments create fiscal space for these spending needs. Assuming a subsequent timely return to the fiscal rules, public debt is projected to continue falling and reach the debt target of 60 percent of GDP by 2030.

Over the medium-term GDP growth is projected to slow given the tourism sector operates near its peak-season capacity. Key downside risks include the threat of further natural disasters, potential shocks to tourism demand, and the uncertain scale of future CBI inflows, while the domestic non-bank financial system faces rising vulnerabilities from the continued rapid expansion of credit unions and the rising costs of property insurance. Prospective hotel developments and public investment projects represent upside risks to the medium-term growth outlook.

    Executive Board Assessment[2]

Executive Directors agreed with the thrust of the staff appraisal. They welcomed Grenada’s robust economic performance in 2023 and the first half of 2024, buoyed by strong tourism. Directors also commended the authorities’ swift and prudently tailored response to Hurricane Beryl, which supported disaster-relief and helped mitigate the impact on economic growth. Noting that the medium-term outlook remains subject to risks from natural disasters, uncertain Citizenship-by-Investment (CBI) flows, and other external shocks, they encouraged the authorities to exercise continued fiscal prudence and to pursue structural reforms to boost long-term growth and enhance resilience, while leveraging Fund technical assistance.

Directors welcomed Grenada’s commitment to fiscal prudence and debt sustainability and emphasized the importance of a timely return to the suspended fiscal rules. In that context, they noted the need for continued expenditure prioritization and revenue mobilization to create fiscal space for future investment needs, including for climate resilience. Further strengthening public investment management and budget planning processes would also be important. Directors also saw merit in developing a more uniform framework for managing all CBI resources and encouraged continued progress in resolving outstanding official arrears.

Directors welcomed the banking system’s resilience despite repeated shocks. They emphasized the need for vigilance and strengthened oversight in the rapidly expanding credit union sector. Directors encouraged strengthening data collection and regional collaboration in the property insurance sector, given rising premiums. They also agreed that further enhancements in the AML/CFT frameworks are essential, including to safeguard correspondent banking relationships.

Directors commended the authorities’ implementation of Grenada’s Disaster Resilience Strategy including investments in a risk-layering framework of disaster-contingency insurance and financing instruments. Moving forward and noting the risk of future natural disasters, they emphasized the importance of further advancing the energy transition and investment in disaster resilient infrastructure, with support from private financing.

Directors also encouraged sustained structural reform efforts to foster long-term growth, including investing in active labor market policies and continuing efforts to support off-season and niche tourism. Addressing data gaps is also important.

It is expected that the next Article IV Consultation with Grenada will be held on the standard 12-month consultation cycle.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: The First Step to a Quantum-Safe Future With Samsung Knox

    Source: Samsung

Samsung Electronics has been working on a new form of cutting-edge mobile security, starting from the Galaxy S25 series. Known as post-quantum cryptography (PQC), the technology uses advanced algorithms to future-proof against the potential risks that quantum computing poses to traditional encryption methods.

Samsung Newsroom explored the future of digital security to understand why Samsung is already taking these protective measures.

    Eyes on the Horizon
Quantum computing represents one of the most transformative fields in modern technology, offering unparalleled problem-solving capabilities. By harnessing the power of quantum computers, complex challenges can be solved exponentially faster than with traditional computing — unlocking breakthroughs in numerous industries from medicine to logistics. For instance, quantum algorithms could streamline supply chains or improve punctuality in transportation systems.

However, this immense computational power comes with risks. Because quantum algorithms have the potential to break certain encryption methods used to safeguard today’s data, addressing this vulnerability is critical to ensuring data protection in the future.

While quantum computing is not expected to reach full-scale implementation immediately, early action is essential to protection against “harvest now, decrypt later” threats — where attackers collect data now to decrypt it with future quantum capabilities.

    Redefining Standards of Defense
Samsung has been working on PQC to ensure encrypted data remains secure in a quantum-powered world.

The company is closely following standards recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)1 to defend against quantum computer attacks. For example, the ML-KEM (Module-Lattice-Based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism) algorithm employs lattice-based mathematics — complex multidimensional structures that make encryption keys exceptionally difficult to solve, even for quantum computers. Ideal for secure communication between connected devices, the algorithm provides robust security while optimizing performance and minimizing data exchange.

NIST’s PQC standards secure a wide range of electronic information from confidential emails to e-commerce transactions. For Samsung, they are a way to future-proof cloud data against quantum threats.

    Samsung’s Strategic Approach
Committed to protecting user data as technologies such as quantum computing evolve, Samsung is introducing Post-Quantum Enhanced Data Protection (EDP) to Samsung Knox Matrix — the company’s industry-leading protection for connected device ecosystems.

Samsung’s EDP feature currently provides end-to-end encryption for user data when backing up, restoring or syncing personal information through Samsung Cloud.

With the integration of PQC technology to Knox Matrix, another layer of protection has been added — setting a new standard for cloud security on mobile devices. Knox Matrix’s cross-device compatibility will ensure seamless quantum-safe protection for Samsung Cloud backups and synced data across smartphones, TVs and digital appliances.

This feature is available on the new Galaxy S25 series as the first device operating on One UI 7, giving Galaxy users enhanced protection against quantum computing threats.

    Samsung Leading a Secure Future
In an ever-evolving digital landscape, preparing for potential threats is not an option but a necessity. As quantum computing looms on the horizon, the need to future-proof data protection has become increasingly clear.

The Galaxy S25 series is the first in the industry to support PQC-based cloud data protection, raising the bar for data protection in the upcoming quantum computing era. Moving forward, Samsung will continue to pioneer the mobile security industry and create a future where users can enjoy a connected world with peace of mind.

1 NIST has finalized its principal set of encryption algorithms designed to withstand cyberattacks from quantum computers. Built for the future, these new standards are specified in the first completed standards from NIST’s Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) standardization project.

    Summary

The Czech Republic is evolving from a heavily manufacturing-based, export-oriented hub to a more mature and diversified economy. Non-auto manufacturing, energy, and construction, once important Czech engines of growth, have run out of steam, hampered by decelerating productivity growth, higher energy costs, and sluggish demand. The auto industry has shown resilience so far, but the required transition to electric vehicles and exposure to foreign competition are set to exert significant pressures in the coming years. Higher value-added sectors, including ICT services, are constrained by lack of skilled labor and limited access to capital, undermining their ability to compete in global markets.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Transparency International warns: the Corruption Perceptions Index should not be used to mask democratic decline

    Source: Transparency International

The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) serves as a global benchmark for assessing perceptions of corruption in the public sector. However, no single measure can fully capture the complexity of corruption or the nuances of governance quality. Due to its limited scope, issues like democratic backsliding and restrictions on civil liberties are not accounted for in the scores. Despite this, some governments have leveraged their CPI rankings – or even stagnant scores – to present a misleading image of their governance.

Effectively curbing corruption requires governments to act on multiple fronts, including building strong, independent institutions and checks and balances mechanisms; ensuring transparency and open governance; enforcing robust legal frameworks to uphold the rule of law; and empowering civil society and a free press to expose and challenge corruption. Integrity in both public and private sectors, underpinned by ethical standards and transparent processes, is essential, alongside public participation. Without a comprehensive and sustained response, efforts to address corruption may falter over time.

Although the CPI does not assess all pillars of anti-corruption efforts, some governments have misused the results to create a distorted narrative. In Georgia, for example, the government has failed to improve its CPI score since 2012 but continues to tout the country’s performance to obscure serious attacks on democratic processes, rule of law and civil liberties.

Transparency International’s highlighted state capture and the rise of kleptocratic practices as key corruption-related challenges in the country, and , over the past five years, Georgia has faced notable setbacks in freedom of association and assembly as well as freedom of expression. These challenges are driven by the harsh suppression of anti-government demonstrations, mounting restrictions on civil society, and an increasingly adversarial climate for the media. Our own chapter has not been immune from this expanding repression, with a member of our chapter in Georgia recently being attacked by people linked to the ruling Georgian Dream party. We have before that restricting is a popular tactic to weaken societal checks on corruption, reducing the chances of being denounced for engaging in corruption and facing consequences.

No existing index or corruption measure fully captures all aspects of corruption, particularly state capture. This highlights the need for further discussions and additional resources to develop additional assessment tools.

François Valerian, Chair of Transparency International, said:

We condemn the misuse of the Corruption Perceptions Index to disguise poor governance, especially when it masks the dismantling of democratic institutions and attacks on activists. The erosion of civil liberties and checks and balances mechanisms, alongside attacks on press freedom, often goes hand in hand with covert forms of corruption like grand corruption and state capture. Those truly committed to fighting corruption should have nothing to hidetransparency, strong institutions, and an empowered civil society are essential, or efforts will fall short.”

TORONTO, Feb. 4, 2025 /CNW/ – Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (NYSE: AEM) (TSX: AEM) (“Agnico Eagle“) and O3 Mining Inc. (TSXV: OIII) (OTCQX: OIIIF) (“O3 Mining“) are pleased to jointly announce the expiry of Agnico Eagle’s board-supported take-over bid (the “Offer“) for all of the outstanding common shares of O3 Mining (the “Common Shares“) for $1.67 in cash per Common Share. Agnico Eagle has taken-up and acquired an aggregate of 114,785,237 Common Shares that were tendered to the Offer, representing approximately 95.6% of the issued and outstanding Common Shares on a basic basis. As a result, as of the date hereof, Agnico Eagle beneficially owns, and exercises control and direction over, an aggregate of 115,842,990 Common Shares, representing approximately 96.5% of the issued and outstanding Common Shares on a basic basis. This includes the additional 4,360,806 Common Shares (the “Deposited Shares“) tendered to the Offer during the mandatory 10-day extension period that expired at 11:59 p.m. (EST) on February 3, 2025. The aggregate consideration payable for the Deposited Shares is $7,282,546. Agnico Eagle will pay for the Deposited Shares by February 6, 2025.

    Subsequent Acquisition Transaction

Agnico Eagle Abitibi Acquisition Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Agnico Eagle, and O3 Mining will amalgamate under the Business Corporations Act (Ontario) (the “Amalgamation“), with the amalgamated entity (“Amalco“) becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Agnico Eagle. The Amalgamation will constitute the subsequent acquisition transaction contemplated by the Offer (the “Subsequent Acquisition Transaction“), by which Agnico Eagle will acquire ownership of 100% of the Common Shares.

Each O3 Mining shareholder (other than Agnico Eagle and any O3 Mining shareholder who validly exercises dissent rights in relation to the Amalgamation) will, upon completion of the Amalgamation, receive one redeemable preferred share of Amalco (each, a “Redeemable Preferred Share“) for each Common Share held immediately prior to the effective time of the Amalgamation. The Redeemable Preferred Shares will be automatically redeemed effective immediately following the effective time of the Amalgamation for $1.67 in cash per Redeemable Preferred Share (the “Redemption Consideration“) held immediately prior to the effective time of the Amalgamation. The Redemption Consideration is the same as the consideration that was offered to O3 Mining shareholders under the Offer.

The Amalgamation must be approved by (i) at least two-thirds of the votes cast by O3 Mining shareholders at a special meeting of O3 Mining shareholders (the “Meeting“) and (ii) a simple majority of the votes cast by O3 Mining shareholders at the Meeting, excluding votes from O3 Mining shareholders required to be excluded by Multilateral Instrument 61-101 – Protection of Minority Securityholders in Special Transactions (“MI 61-101“). As Agnico Eagle beneficially owns, and exercises control and direction over, Common Shares carrying more than two-thirds of the votes attached to all of the issued and outstanding Common Shares and the Common Shares taken-up and acquired under the Offer represent more than a majority of the votes attached to the Common Shares that may be voted in the “minority” vote under MI 61-101, Agnico Eagle is able to ensure the successful outcome of the shareholder votes in respect of the Amalgamation. The O3 Mining board recommends that O3 Mining shareholders vote FOR the Amalgamation.

Additional information regarding the terms of the amalgamation agreement and the Amalgamation will be provided in the management information circular of O3 Mining (the “Circular“) for the Meeting. It is anticipated that the Circular will be mailed to O3 Mining shareholders in February 2025 and the Meeting will be held in March 2025. Copies of the amalgamation agreement and the Circular will be made available on O3 Mining’s issuer profile on SEDAR+ at www.sedarplus.ca.

The Amalgamation is expected to close prior to March 31, 2025. Following completion of the Amalgamation, the Common Shares will be de-listed from the TSX Venture Exchange and O3 Mining will make an application to the Ontario Securities Commission to cease to be a reporting issuer under Canadian securities laws. Upon O3 Mining ceasing to be a reporting issuer, O3 Mining will no longer be subject to the ongoing continuous disclosure and reporting obligations currently imposed on O3 Mining as a reporting issuer and will be a private company that is wholly-owned by Agnico Eagle.

    Information for Warrantholders

Certain Common Share purchase warrants of O3 Mining (the “Warrants“) remain issued and outstanding, which are governed in accordance with the warrant indenture dated August 28, 2024 between O3 Mining and Odyssey Trust Company, as warrant agent. These Warrants are exercisable at $1.45 per Warrant until August 28, 2026. O3 Mining intends to enter into a supplemental indenture to provide that holders of such Warrants will receive, on exercise of their Warrants in lieu of Common Shares, $1.67 in cash following the Amalgamation.

    Source: Isle of Man

The Isle of Man Financial Services Authority has published a report highlighting the findings of a thematic review relating to insurance intermediaries.

The conduct-based review was carried out by the Prudential Supervision Division to assess compliance with the relevant legislation and identify any common themes regarding the fair treatment of customers.

A total of 27 Island firms responded to the initial questionnaire, while a sample of seven firms was selected using a risk-based approach to provide additional information as part of a desk-based review in phase two.

A range of insurance intermediaries took part, including firms that are fully registered or partially exempt, but excluding those registered in respect of packaged bank accounts only.

The thematic report, which is available to view on the publications section of the Authority’s website, sets out the findings, as well as key observations and examples of good practice and areas for improvement.

The data will inform the Authority’s picture of risk within the sector and support its work to protect consumers and maintain confidence in the finance industry through effective regulation.

Andrew Kermode, Head of the Prudential Supervision Division, said: ‘Thematic reviews help to identify issues or trends within industry, including areas that may pose higher risks. The findings improve the depth and breadth of the Authority’s knowledge through observation of firms’ practices and the inspection of records. The review of insurance intermediaries focused on conduct risk, more specifically the fair treatment of customers. Firms are encouraged to read the report and consider any action necessary to ensure their own processes are effective, up-to-date and properly documented.’

Healthcare companies may be neglecting environmental responsibilities in AI push, says GlobalData

    Posted in Medical Devices

Since US President Trump’s first day in office, he has been rolling back environmental responsibilities, marked by withdrawing the US from the Paris Climate Agreement, which set out guidelines for developed countries to support efforts of developing countries to build clean, climate-resilient futures through financial and technological support. The recent developments in the US may result in the lack of pressure in implementing environmental initiatives, and many healthcare companies may be neglecting them at a time when there is an increased focus on usage of artificial intelligence (AI) in the sector, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

According to GlobalData’s “Strategic Intelligence: ESG Sentiment Polls Q4 2024,” 45% of respondents indicated that the primary reason a company would set up an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance plan would be because of legislation and pressure from the government. In the absence of any pressure from the governments, positive environmental initiatives, especially ESG, will be lost.

Selena Yu, Senior Medical Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “With most ESG survey respondents in Q4 2024 indicating that not only is ESG performative in their companies but also that ESG initiatives are typically placed due to government pressures, it’s vital that healthcare companies mitigate negative environmental impacts. The basis of it is to provide healthcare companies exceptional, innovative care to patients. This overlaps greatly with the impacts of a warming global climate like limiting access to clean water, increased air pollution, and decline in agricultural diversity. Healthcare extends outside of the hospital, as preventative and follow-up care is essential for patients.”

The developments in the US also come during a time of increased AI initiatives and growth in healthcare with an estimated $1 trillion market worth by 2030, according to GlobalData’s thematic report “Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (2024)”.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) 2024 report, global AI energy demand is expected to increase to at least 10 times the current level by 2026. Additionally, clean water is required to cool down the processors used for AI. Combined with the rising global temperature, scarcity of clean water, and decreased environmental sentiments in the US government, it’s vital that companies take initiatives to balance AI usage to future healthcare advancements with environmental impact.

AI has many advantages in healthcare, from choosing the best treatment for patients and optimizing patient triage in emergency care to improving manufacturing capabilities to limit waste and optimizing storage. But it’s vital to balance AI-led innovation with environmental impact, as current methods to mitigate carbon emissions, for example, have not been successful.

Yu continues: “Tech leaders like Google, Meta, and Microsoft have promised to replenish the clean water they used for their AI usage, but how feasible is that with clean water being a limited resource. This ties us back to how most global survey respondents in Q4 2024 believe company ESG plans are performative. The decision to prioritize environmental initiatives is a difficult battle to fight. I believe most stakeholders are putting increased company revenue over ESG because they don’t see the innate benefit to it. This is a dated way of strategizing, as overall company success should go hand in hand with environmental protection.”

Healthcare companies need to position themselves as the spearheads of balancing environmental responsibilities and AI-led innovation. With the health of the overall ecosystem directly correlated to patient health, it is in their best interest to be contributing to patient health outside of the clinic.

Yu concludes: “There are many options for patient-facing bodies and healthcare companies to balance the needs of patients using AI for personalized care and spearheading the importance of incorporating strong environmental policies into manufacturing practice. It’s really a cycle, the decline in healthy foods due to changes in climate impacting farming and decreased air and water quality will directly be seen in the overall population being less healthy, which goes back into our healthcare systems.”

US startups secure over half of high-value VC deals announced globally during 2024, finds GlobalData

    Posted in Business Fundamentals

The US maintained its dominance in the global venture capital (VC) landscape in 2024, securing over half of all high value* deals. With a commanding 56.6% share by high-value VC deal volume and 64.5% by value, the US significantly outpaced other markets, underscoring strong investor confidence in its startup ecosystem amid the evolving economic conditions and shifting global investment trends, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The US-based startups attracting big-ticket deals showcases the solid confidence VC investors have in the country’s startup ecosystem. It is also noteworthy that the US was distantly followed by China, which accounted for 12.3% and 14.4% share of high-value VC deal volume and value, respectively, during 2024.”

An analysis of GlobalData’s Deals Database revealed that the US saw the announcement of 291 high-value VC deals during 2024 while the total value of these deals stood at $92 billion. Meanwhile, a total of 63 high-value VC deals worth $20.6 billion were announced in China during the same period.

Bose adds: “Of the top 10 countries by high-value VC deals volume in 2024, two were from North America while Europe and the Asia-Pacific region had four countries each.”

The UK occupied the third position by high-value VC deals volume in 2024, followed by Germany, India, Canada, Singapore, France, Japan and Switzerland.

Bose concludes: “The concentration of high-value VC deals in a few key markets highlights the evolving dynamics of global venture funding. While the US continues to dominate, the presence of multiple European and Asia-Pacific countries in the top rankings signals a broader diversification of investor interest, driven by innovation and emerging growth opportunities worldwide.”

Areteia’s dexpramipexole holds potential to redefine respiratory health, says GlobalData

    Posted in Pharma

During the J.P. Morgan 43rd Annual Healthcare Conference in January 2025, Areteia Therapeutics’s CEO, Jorge Bartolome, presented a detailed review of its achievements in 2024 and outlined its 2025 plans to advance innovation in the respiratory space with its flagship candidate dexpramipexole dihydrochloride, the first oral therapy targeting eosinophilic asthma. With multiple ongoing clinical trials and a strategic focus on regulatory approvals, Areteia could be well-positioned to transform the treatment landscape for severe respiratory diseases, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Sravani Meka, Senior Pharmaceutical Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The current treatment landscape for severe asthma is primarily biologics, which are either administered intravenously or subcutaneously. With the Phase 3 program one step closer to reaching study completion, if approved, dexpramipexole can transform the treatment landscape by addressing unmet needs for patients facing barriers to injectable treatments.”

A major focus of the presentation was the progress of the EXHALE program, dexpramipexole dihydrochloride’s pivotal trials. Significant advancements have been made in the Phase 3 asthma trials (EXHALE-2, EXHALE-3, and EXHALE-4), with EXHALE-4 now fully enrolled and top-line results expected in Q3 2025.

Additionally, the SUSPIRE-1 trial, investigating dexpramipexole’s potential in COPD, is also fully enrolled, with data readouts anticipated later in 2025. Bartolome also highlighted dexpramipexole’s strong differentiation within the competitive landscape. Data from Phase 2 trials demonstrated biologic-like efficacy, including significant reductions in blood eosinophils and notable improvements in lung function (FEV1).

Meka adds: “Despite the progress in the Phase 3 program, Areteia faces increasing competition, particularly from established biologic therapies by GSK and AstraZeneca. Its success hinges on achieving strong clinical data, rapid regulatory approvals, and effective market positioning. Anticipated trial results later this year will be critical in determining whether dexpramipexole can meet the unmet needs of patients and disrupt current treatment paradigms.”

Bartolome also offered a forward-looking perspective on Areteia’s mission to revolutionize respiratory care. Backed by $425 million in Series A funding and a seasoned leadership team, the company is poised to address significant medical and economic challenges in asthma and COPD. With dexpramipexole at the forefront, Areteia aims to drive innovation and expand its pipeline to deliver life-changing therapies for patients worldwide.

Meka concludes: “While Areteia’s funding rounds have proved to be successful, positive trial results in 2025 could attract collaborations for co-development, licensing, or commercialization, leveraging Areteia’s innovation to address unmet needs in asthma and COPD. Strategic alliances could accelerate global market reach and pipeline expansion, solidifying Areteia’s leadership in respiratory care.”

ESG will remain core focus in tech during 2025, but fragmented by geography and company culture, says GlobalData

    Posted in Technology

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) remains an issue of strategic importance to the tech industry, despite ongoing fragmentation by geography and company culture, with the election of Donald Trump as the US president accelerating a period of short-term opportunistic push-back, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Robert Pritchard, Principal Analyst, Enterprise Technology & Services at GlobalData, says: “In 2024, GlobalData correctly forecast that tech companies would still see ESG as a core strategic issue. This has been underlined by improved observability, and increasingly aligned ESG and financial reporting.”

GlobalData Tech-Enabled ESG analytical forecasts for 2024 highlighted the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the market both as a drain on natural resources, and as part of the solution to address sustainability challenges. This year, GlobalData has observed that the latest generation of network equipment is often 80% to 90% more energy efficient than legacy kit.

Pritchard adds: “GlobalData also foresaw the twin trends of ESG being used as a differentiator by tech companies, and a closer alignment with financial reporting – driven both by regulation and commercial imperatives. This, as predicted, has meant a growing association of cost savings and improved productivity as a result of ESG initiatives.”

Pritchard continues: “The Trump impact will see different speeds and priorities by geography when it comes to sustainability, but the overall direction of travel will outlast a four-year presidential period – enterprises think strategically, and while some may exploit short-term climate change denying opportunities, their customers, employees, and regulators will continue to recognize the importance of addressing the climate crisis.”

Pritchard concludes: “The other major theme we see in enterprise ESG through 2025 is its extension into the small/medium-sized business (SMB) market. This reflects growing customer demand and the ongoing refocus of tech service providers on smaller businesses as the engine of economic – and therefore their own commercial – growth.”
