Headline: STATEMENT: CanREA eager to work with new federal Cabinet to advance wind energy, solar energy and energy storage

CanREA ready to help Canada’s newly appointed Ministers deliver on key election promises that will advance clean-energy initiatives nationwide.

Ottawa, Ontario, May 13, 2025—The Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) congratulates Canada’s new federal Cabinet Ministers and Secretaries of State on their appointment to Cabinet. The Ministers were sworn in today by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M, C.D., Governor General of Canada.

CanREA looks forward to supporting their delivery of an ambitious agenda for the clean-energy industry, helping Canada meet its economic and environmental goals.

Specifically, CanREA would like to congratulate:

The Hon. François-Philippe Champagne P.C. M.P., Minister of Finance and National Revenue
The Hon. Dominic LeBlanc P.C., M.P., President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs and One Canadian Economy
The Hon. Shafqat Ali P.C. M.P., President of the Treasury Board
The Hon. Tim Hodgson P.C. M.P., Minister of Energy and Natural Resources
The Hon. Julie Dabrusin P.C. M.P., Minister of Environment and Climate Change
The Hon. Mélanie Joly, P.C., M.P., Minister of Industry
The Hon. Rebecca Ally P.C., M.P. Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations
The Hon. Mandy Gull-Masty P.C., M.P., Minister of Indigenous Services

“Over the past number of years, the CanREA team has developed a strong working relationship with the federal government,” said Vittoria Bellissimo, CanREA’s President and CEO. “My team and I are committed to advancing wind, solar and energy storage and we will work closely with Canada’s newly appointed ministers to shape and support federal policies that will be essential to our industry as we plan, finance and build clean-energy projects that benefit Canadians.”

During the recent election campaign, the Liberal Party committed to a suite of proposals that support the rapid deployment of clean energy, as described in this recent CanREA statement. These policies include:

Finalizing the Clean Economy Investment Tax Credits (ITCs), policies that have already galvanized private sector investment in Canada’s renewable energy and energy storage industry. Getting the remaining ITCs passed into law, particularly the Clean Electricity ITC, will secure Canada’s position as a competitive and safe place for the private sector to invest. These will also help lower the cost of electricity to Canadian ratepayers.
Reducing the barriers to accessing capital faced by Indigenous companies and communities, by expanding the kinds of projects the Canada Infrastructure Bank can support to be more in line with First Nation, Inuit and Métis priorities. The Liberals also committed to exploring options for an Indigenous Infrastructure Bank to further address this gap.
Offering support for Canadians entering the trades, while also helping to reduce barriers that these skilled workers face when working in another province.
Creating a new First and Last Mile Fund that will move more electricity and goods from where they are produced to where they are needed, creating a more integrated and accessible Canadian economy.
Signing new Cooperation and Substitution Agreements with all willing provinces, territories and Indigenous Governing Bodies within six months, ensuring that projects go through only one review that upholds environmental standards and Indigenous consultation.
Cementing the signal for electrification by maintaining the industrial carbon price. During his leadership campaign, Mr. Carney even promised to set a pricing schedule out to 2035—this would be a strong signal upon which Canada’s renewable energy and energy storage industry could rely.

Across the country, more than 18,000 MW of clean-energy procurements, representing more than $34 B, are being planned or currently taking place, all of which will benefit from these federal policies.

“The federal ITCs, along with increased Indigenous access to capital and new interprovincial interconnections, will allow Canada to maintain its competitive edge in the global race for renewable energy and energy storage investment,” said Fernando Melo, CanREA’s Federal Director of Policy and Government Affairs.

“Putting these in place will be no small feat, but CanREA is committed to collaborating with the federal government to get these groundbreaking policies across the finish line.”

Headline: Universal Music Group and Apple Music announce Sound Therapy

    May 13, 2025

    UPDATE

Universal Music Group and Apple Music announce Sound Therapy

The collection leverages cognitive science and UMG’s roster of global superstars, adding subtle auditory beats to well-known curated tracks, aiming to help listeners focus, relax, and sleep

Apple Music is joining forces with Universal Music Group (UMG) to introduce Sound Therapy, an innovative audio wellness collection designed to help listeners attain clearer focus, deeper relaxation, and better sleep.1

“For years, elevating music’s role in health and wellbeing has been a strategic priority for UMG, linked to a potentially significant commercial opportunity, as well as something that our chairman and CEO, Sir Lucian, and the entire management team are passionate about,” said Michael Nash, UMG’s executive vice president and chief digital officer. “Given Apple’s leadership at the intersection of health and technology, the launch of Sound Therapy represents an important validation of our innovative, science-led Sollos initiative. We look forward to working closely with the team at Apple to expand the ways that music can be harnessed to improve the wellness benefits for its users.”

“Every day, people around the world make Apple Music part of their daily routine, and we’ve seen incredible engagement around our personalized mood playlists and the new Apple Music Chill radio station,” said Rachel Newman, Apple Music’s co-head. “Now, with Sound Therapy, we’re proud to work alongside UMG and Sollos to bring a new listening experience to Apple Music — one that’s grounded in artistry, shaped by innovation, and designed to support wellness.”

Available exclusively on Apple Music, Sound Therapy blends songs subscribers already know and love with special sound waves designed to enhance users’ daily routines, while retaining the artist’s original vision. Backed by scientific research and powered by UMG’s proprietary audio technologies, Sound Therapy harnesses the power of sound waves, psychoacoustics, and cognitive science to help listeners relax or focus the mind.

The collection was crafted by a team of producers, scientists, and audio engineers at Sollos, a groundbreaking music-wellness venture incubated within UMG’s London offices. Sound Therapy features extended, instrumental, and reimagined versions of popular tracks from acclaimed artists such as Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Ludovico Einaudi, AURORA, Jhené Aiko, Chelsea Cutler, and Jeremy Zucker, providing a premium listening experience.

Sound Therapy features three categories: Focus, Relax, and Sleep. Songs have been enhanced with auditory beats or colored noise to help encourage specific brain responses. Gamma waves and white noise — a whoosh-like combination of every sound frequency — may help with focusing; theta waves could aid in relaxation; and delta waves and pink noise — a deeper, gentler variation akin to rain or wind — might assist in achieving better sleep. A dreamy version of Katy Perry’s “Double Rainbow,” for example, could help listeners drift off to sleep, while an Imagine Dragons track might help them tackle a to-do list. Learn more about Sound Therapy from Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.

Apple has long been committed to enabling its customers to lead healthier, more active lives through offerings like Apple Watch, HealthKit, and Apple Fitness+. The company will work closely with Sollos and UMG to further establish scientific evidence supporting music and audio for improved wellbeing, and finding inclusive ways to bring these benefits to people around the world.

    Maintain Focus

The Focus category is designed to support improved cognitive performance and concentration, tapping into the power of gamma auditory beats to help listeners get in the mindset to achieve optimum focus. White noise masks distracting sounds, aiming to help listeners stay in the moment.

    Time to Relax

Songs in the Relax category are made for letting go, blending and infusing in theta auditory beats to help achieve ultimate relaxation.

    Made for Sleep

The Sleep category is designed to encourage deeper sleep through an infusion of delta auditory beats or pink noise, which works similarly to white noise but uses natural sounds like rainfall and ocean waves.

Sound Therapy arrives on the heels of the brand-new Apple Music Chill radio station, created to serve as a sanctuary of sound listeners can turn to throughout their day to seek refuge. The station’s programming is a continuous flow of chill highlights across genres, interspersed with mindful moments meant to remind listeners to make the time to find center and calm. Enjoy the velvety tones of discerning tastemakers like Brian Eno, Stephan Moccio, and Zane Lowe, who expertly take listeners through stories of calm and wellbeing in their own hosted shows.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Phillips 66 Issues Statement Following Glass Lewis and ISS Reports

    Source: Phillips

Disagrees with ISS’ and Glass Lewis’ Recommendations which Failed to Address Critical Issues Reiterates The Strength Of Phillips 66’s Highly Qualified Board And Nominees

HOUSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX) today announced that it strongly disagrees with the recommendations issued by Institutional Shareholder Services (“ISS”) and Glass Lewis & Co. (“Glass Lewis”).
“We disagree with the recommendations issued by ISS and Glass Lewis,” said the Phillips 66 Independent Directors. “We remain committed to engaging with and listening to our shareholders on the issues in this campaign.”
The Company notes the following issues and omissions in the reports’ analyses that remain critical factors for shareholders to consider:
Elliott’s break-up thesis not examined: The reports did not opine on the merits of Elliott’s thesis to break up Phillips 66, which is the primary objective of Elliott’s campaign. In fact, ISS stated clearly that its report “is not an endorsement of a Midstream and/or Chemicals separation.” Supporting Elliott’s directors implicitly supports this risky path and overrides the judgment of Phillips 66’s highly qualified Board. Our Board continually evaluates the portfolio to maximize shareholder value and currently believes that the integrated model is the best path to shareholder value creation. As we always have, we remain committed to regularly and aggressively assessing these options going forward.
Concerning assessment of director independence: By recommending against Robert Pease, the reports establish a concerning precedent on evaluating director independence.
The reports suggest a director selected and vetted by a shareholder can be determined to lack independence after one month on the board and one vote. The single vote was for a combined CEO and Chair, a policy that is in place at 44% of S&P 500 companies.1
This analysis disregards the fact that Mr. Pease’s vote represented his professional judgment as a 30-year corporate leader and ignores the fact that Mr. Pease was carefully evaluated for his qualifications and independence by Elliott. It also fails to apply any scrutiny to Elliott’s self-interested lack of support for its recently supported director.

Reliance on board analysis from five years ago: ISS acknowledged that Phillips 66 has refreshed its Board substantially since July 2020. Yet, it still claimed that a lack of Board refreshment prior to the COVID-19 pandemic reflects a need for change now.
Concerning governance overlooked: ISS and Glass Lewis disregarded Elliott’s ongoing efforts to acquire CITGO. The reports also overlook the fact that this pursuit took place concurrently with discussions of a second director appointment. Notably, neither report mentions anything about Elliott’s misleading disclosures and the overlapping relationships of its director nominees. These are unresolved issues that are highly relevant to shareholder considerations.
Phillips 66 reiterates its commitment to ongoing transformation and governance refreshment. The Company reminds shareholders of key facts including:
Consistent refreshment: Phillips 66 has added five new independent directors in the past four years to equip the Board with fresh perspectives and independent viewpoints. In its report, ISS acknowledged the Company’s board refreshment efforts, noting “Beginning in July 2020, the pace of board refreshment accelerated rapidly. The board appointed Julie Bushman early that month, Lisa Davis in October 2020, Denise Singleton and Doug Terreson in July 2021, and Greg Hayes in July 2022. Mark Lashier also joined in July 2022 in connection with his succession as CEO. Accompanying these appointments, Ferguson departed in August 2020, and McGraw and Tschinkel departed in March 2021.”
Strong governance practices: The Board is firmly committed to declassification that would require all directors to stand election each year. The last attempt to do so received approval from 73% of outstanding shares.
In its report, ISS supported Phillips 66’s declassification proposal, arguing, “The proposed declassification, assuming it can clear the supermajority hurdle, would enhance board accountability to shareholders, and the resubmission of this proposal to a vote after it failed in prior years demonstrates a commitment to shareholders’ interests on the part of management.”

Early days in transformation strategy: ISS recognizes that Phillips 66 has improved its operating results since Mark Lashier stepped in as CEO on July 1, 2022 and achieved a total shareholder return above that of key competitors. ISS noted, “Since the appointment of Lashier as CEO through May 8, 2025, PSX has outperformed VLO by 20.9 percentage points.” Phillips 66 has made it clear that it is working to improve operations but is not satisfied with its results. In under three years, the Company has made progress on corporate cost takeout, refining performance, asset divestitures and more. These are facts recognized by the reports. These actions reflect a commitment to improvement that is continuing and will lead to further performance improvement and ultimately increased shareholder value.
Relevant director skills: Phillips 66’s Board composition is closely aligned with the Company’s strategy and the issues raised in this campaign. Of the continuing Directors and nominees, six have refining experience, five have chemicals experience and five have midstream experience. The majority has experience in business transformations, several have expertise in finance and a number are experts in supply chains.2 Notably, the Company’s Directors and nominees have overseen more than $300 billion in “breakup or major divestiture transactions.3
Phillips 66 encourages shareholders to reach their own informed conclusions.
Elliott is seeking rapid, irreversible change in pursuit of a short-term thesis that would introduce significant risks to Phillips 66 shareholders. Do not let Elliott’s short-term and misinformed thesis disrupt your consistent and compelling returns.
Phillips 66 recommends that shareholders use the WHITE proxy card to vote:
    ‘FOR’ only its four nominees using the WHITE proxy card;
    ‘FOR’ management’s proposal to approve the declassification of the Board of Directors, in line with the recommendations from ISS & Glass Lewis;
‘AGAINST’ Elliott’s proposal requiring annual director resignations, which implementing would violate Delaware law and put your Board at significant legal and reputational risk.
The Board strongly recommends that shareholders safeguard their investment in Phillips 66 by casting their vote as soon as possible, regardless of plans to attend the Annual Meeting virtually on May 21, 2025.
Shareholders may receive materials from Elliott Management that say “Gold proxy card” or “Gold voting instructions” or similar language. Phillips 66 recommends that shareholders DISCARD any Gold voting materials they may receive from Elliott. Shareholders may cancel out any vote made using a Gold proxy card by voting again TODAY using the Company’s WHITE proxy card. Only the latest-dated vote will count.

Samsung’s slim phone offers distinctly marketable feature among obscure AI use cases, says GlobalData

    Posted in Technology

    Following the news that Samsung has launched the slim Galaxy S25 Edge phone;

Anisha Bhatia, Senior Technology Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers her view:

Samsung‘s Galaxy S25 Edge is a slim design that will redefine market standards amid competitive pressures. The phone’s sleek profile, measuring just 5.8 mm, stands out as a compelling feature in an era where differentiation is paramount. As original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and telcos navigate the complexities of unclear artificial intelligence (AI) use cases and their monetization, the allure of a marketable feature, such as a slim and lightweight form factor, becomes increasingly significant.

“The trend towards slimmer smartphones is not a response to consumer demand; it is a strategic tactic by OEMs to carve out a unique identity in an intensely competitive landscape. The $1,099 S25 Edge comes with a hardy titanium body, weighs a light 163 grams, and includes all the multimodal AI features that are available in its parent S25 series of phones. But rival Apple’s anticipated iPhone 17 Air, expected in Fall 2025, is projected to be 5.5mm thin, poised to surpass Samsung in the race for slimness.

“Apple may leverage the iPhone 17 Air’s slender design to counterbalance its perceived lag in AI features, generating significant market buzz. While the slim phone phenomenon has gained traction in China, its success in other markets, such as Europe and the US, remains uncertain due to varying cultural and consumer preferences. Nevertheless, the global appeal of this trend suggests a burgeoning niche market ripe for exploration by telcos and OEMs alike.”

Insurers must resolve long-term problems to successfully sell to younger generations, says GlobalData

    Posted in Insurance

Insurers targeting younger generations face longstanding industry issues of a lack of understanding and a lack of consumer trust. While quicker fixes such as social media strategies and more flexible products may help somewhat, they would only appeal to a small proportion, so the more long-term issues need to be addressed to reach these generations, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

A GlobalData poll* conducted in Q1 2025 (with 174 respondents) found that over 50% of respondents believed either a lack of understanding of insurance or a lack of trust in insurance providers were the key challenges in selling insurance to Gen Z and millennials. While these consumer segments are typically digitally savvy, addressing their concerns will require more than upgrading digital platforms and social media strategies.

Ben Carey-Evans, Senior Insurance Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “A lack of consumer trust is a recurring issue for the industry. Rising premiums across some personal lines are not helping the situation; increasing the value and engagement insurers offer will be essential in turning this around.

“Communicating the value of policies will also be a challenge—especially as many young people are introduced to insurance through the ‘grudge purchase’ of mandatory car insurance. However, the modern features of some insurance products can provide added value and engage customers. Features such as nutrition and fitness plans and smartwatch discounts within health insurance, or smart home devices helping make homes safer, are ways that can increase interaction and value between insurers and customers.”

A lack of consumer understanding may be easier to fix, and limited understanding of the value of insurance and complexity of product structures are both seen as challenges. Insurers are often known for having long and complicated terms and conditions. Yet some providers—most notably US startup Lemonade—have prioritized simplicity of language and making policy terms as easy to understand as possible.

Carey-Evans concludes: “The poll findings should be concerning to insurers, suggesting that improving younger generations’ perception of the insurance industry must be a key priority going forward. Longer-term issues such as consumer understanding and trust cannot be fixed simply by improving PR and social media strategies. Instead, providers must aim to increase engagement with customers, make policies easier to understand, and add value and incentives where profit margins allow.”

US tariffs could accelerate supply chain diversification in medtech sector, says GlobalData

    Posted in Medical Devices

The US Trade Representative’s (USTR) plan to reinstate Section 301 tariffs targets Class I and II medical devices, including orthopedic instruments frequently sourced from China. The move is expected to lead to a rise in cost pressures and supply chain risks in the medtech sector. As such, tariff pressures could accelerate supply chain diversification and regional manufacturing in the sector, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

The tariffs, part of a revived Trump-era trade strategy, aim to counter China’s economic influence and encourage domestic manufacturing. However, medtech leaders warn the move could raise healthcare costs and limit patient access to essential technologies.

Zimmer Biomet has recently announced that proposed US tariffs on medical devices imported from China could reduce its 2025 profits by $60 million to $80 million. Zimmer Biomet’s update reflects the broader implications of geopolitical trade shifts on global healthcare. The global musculoskeletal healthcare company is evaluating mitigation strategies such as supplier diversification, logistics optimization, and potential reshoring.

Graysen Vigneux, Medical Analyst at GlobalData, commented: “The impact of these tariffs is significant for globally integrated firms like Zimmer Biomet. While intended to boost US production, the immediate effect may be higher costs that ripple through to providers and patients.”

Many of Zimmer Biomet’s orthopedic instruments, typically low-margin, high-volume products, fall under the tariff scope and cannot be easily transitioned to US manufacturing without major investment and regulatory delay.

Vigneux concludes: “The US medtech industry, already facing inflation, labor shortages, and stricter regulation, now confronts added financial and strategic uncertainty. Companies must remain agile to navigate shifting trade policy without compromising access or quality.”

Starlink’s partnership strategy will benefit both telco expansion and underserved customers in India and Africa, observes GlobalData

    Posted in Technology

Airtel Africa is the latest in the line of telecoms operators partnering with LEO (low-earth orbit) operator Starlink to expand its reach and services. The deal was facilitated by parent company Bharti Airtel, which struck its own agreement with Starlink in India in March. The tie-up between Airtel and Starlink will benefit both companies as well as enterprise customers and businesses, pending regulatory approval in India and five African markets within Airtel Africa’s footprint markets where Starlink is not yet currently licensed, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Ismail Patel, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Technology and Services at GlobalData, comments: “For Starlink, partnering with telcos will give it access to points of sale on the ground as it competes with other LEO satellite systems that are vying for position globally. For telcos like Airtel, Starlink can help expand its reach to business customers with rural presence, educational institutions, health centers, logistical firms, agricultural and mining workers, remote tourist hotspots, and others generally requiring a more robust quality of service. There is also an opportunity for the Airtels of both India and Africa to improve their cellular backhaul through Starlink.”

GlobalData analysis revealed the massive micro, small, and medium business opportunity in India, with roughly similar metrics for the African markets where Airtel operates. Airtel Africa and Starlink partnership has the potential to increase digitalization in rural and semi-rural regions in the 14 countries where Airtel Africa operates, especially for micro, small, and medium businesses.

In India, the Confederation of Indian Industry states that of 63 million MSMEs in the country, over 51% are based in rural areas. Fixed broadband penetration of household units in India stood at just 9% as of end-2024, according to GlobalData.

Patel concludes: “Starlink is trying to get a foothold in the global market with a clever combination of D2C and B2B strategies. It already has struck several partnerships with operators in the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, and Ukraine. It wants to maximize the head start it has on its rivals – like Amazon Kuiper, AST SpaceMobile, Telesat Lightspeed, and Eutelsat OneWeb (which itself is partly owned by Bharti Airtel) – that are at various stages of deployment and geographical breadth.

“Competition is expected to heat up rapidly as telcos and satellite vendors will be striking a myriad of partnerships with one another to boost connectivity, which will only serve to benefit business and enterprise customers more. With this backdrop, those telcos and LEOs who stand to gain the most are those who get their foot in the door before others and leverage their first-mover advantage.”

Headline: Apple unveils powerful accessibility features coming later this year

    May 13, 2025

    PRESS RELEASE

Apple unveils powerful accessibility features coming later this year

New features include Accessibility Nutrition Labels on the App Store, Magnifier for Mac, Braille Access, and Accessibility Reader; plus innovative updates to Live Listen, visionOS, Personal Voice, and more

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today announced new accessibility features coming later this year, including Accessibility Nutrition Labels, which will provide more detailed information for apps and games on the App Store. Users who are blind or have low vision can explore, learn, and interact using the new Magnifier app for Mac; take notes and perform calculations with the new Braille Access feature; and leverage the powerful camera system of Apple Vision Pro with new updates to visionOS. Additional announcements include Accessibility Reader, a new systemwide reading mode designed with accessibility in mind, along with updates to Live Listen, Background Sounds, Personal Voice, Vehicle Motion Cues, and more. Leveraging the power of Apple silicon — along with advances in on-device machine learning and artificial intelligence — users will experience a new level of accessibility across the Apple ecosystem.

“At Apple, accessibility is part of our DNA,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Making technology for everyone is a priority for all of us, and we’re proud of the innovations we’re sharing this year. That includes tools to help people access crucial information, explore the world around them, and do what they love.”

“Building on 40 years of accessibility innovation at Apple, we are dedicated to pushing forward with new accessibility features for all of our products,” said Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s senior director of Global Accessibility Policy and Initiatives. “Powered by the Apple ecosystem, these features work seamlessly together to bring users new ways to engage with the things they care about most.”

Accessibility Nutrition Labels Come to the App Store

Accessibility Nutrition Labels bring a new section to App Store product pages that will highlight accessibility features within apps and games. These labels give users a new way to learn if an app will be accessible to them before they download it, and give developers the opportunity to better inform and educate their users on features their app supports. This includes VoiceOver, Voice Control, Larger Text, Sufficient Contrast, Reduced Motion, captions, and more. Accessibility Nutrition Labels will be available on the App Store worldwide, and developers can access more guidance on the criteria apps should meet before displaying accessibility information on their product pages.

“Accessibility Nutrition Labels are a huge step forward for accessibility,” said Eric Bridges, the American Foundation for the Blind’s president and CEO. “Consumers deserve to know if a product or service will be accessible to them from the very start, and Apple has a long-standing history of delivering tools and technologies that allow developers to build experiences for everyone. These labels will give people with disabilities a new way to easily make more informed decisions and make purchases with a new level of confidence.”

    An All-New Magnifier for Mac

Since 2016, Magnifier on iPhone and iPad has given users who are blind or have low vision tools to zoom in, read text, and detect objects around them. This year, Magnifier is coming to Mac to make the physical world more accessible for users with low vision. The Magnifier app for Mac connects to a user’s camera so they can zoom in on their surroundings, such as a screen or whiteboard. Magnifier works with Continuity Camera on iPhone as well as attached USB cameras, and supports reading documents using Desk View.

With multiple live session windows, users can multitask by viewing a presentation with a webcam while simultaneously following along in a book using Desk View. With customized views, users can adjust brightness, contrast, color filters, and even perspective to make text and images easier to see. Views can also be captured, grouped, and saved to add to later on. Additionally, Magnifier for Mac is integrated with another new accessibility feature, Accessibility Reader, which transforms text from the physical world into a custom legible format.

    A New Braille Experience

Braille Access is an all-new experience that turns iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro into a full-featured braille note taker that’s deeply integrated into the Apple ecosystem. With a built-in app launcher, users can easily open any app by typing with Braille Screen Input or a connected braille device. With Braille Access, users can quickly take notes in braille format and perform calculations using Nemeth Braille, a braille code often used in classrooms for math and science. Users can open Braille Ready Format (BRF) files directly from Braille Access, unlocking a wide range of books and files previously created on a braille note taking device. And an integrated form of Live Captions allows users to transcribe conversations in real time directly on braille displays.

    Introducing Accessibility Reader

Accessibility Reader is a new systemwide reading mode designed to make text easier to read for users with a wide range of disabilities, such as dyslexia or low vision. Available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, Accessibility Reader gives users new ways to customize text and focus on content they want to read, with extensive options for font, color, and spacing, as well as support for Spoken Content. Accessibility Reader can be launched from any app, and is built into the Magnifier app for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, so users can interact with text in the real world, like in books or on dining menus.

Live Captions Arrive on Apple Watch

For users who are deaf or hard of hearing, Live Listen controls come to Apple Watch with a new set of features, including real-time Live Captions. Live Listen turns iPhone into a remote microphone to stream content directly to AirPods, Made for iPhone hearing aids, or Beats headphones. When a session is active on iPhone, users can view Live Captions of what their iPhone hears on a paired Apple Watch while listening along to the audio. Apple Watch serves as a remote control to start or stop Live Listen sessions, or jump back in a session to capture something that may have been missed. With Apple Watch, Live Listen sessions can be controlled from across the room, so there’s no need to get up in the middle of a meeting or during class. Live Listen can be used along with hearing health features available on AirPods Pro 2, including the first-of-its-kind clinical-grade Hearing Aid feature.

An Enhanced View with Apple Vision Pro

For users who are blind or have low vision, visionOS will expand vision accessibility features using the advanced camera system on Apple Vision Pro. With powerful updates to Zoom, users can magnify everything in view — including their surroundings — using the main camera. For VoiceOver users, Live Recognition in visionOS uses on-device machine learning to describe surroundings, find objects, read documents, and more.1 For accessibility developers, a new API will enable approved apps to access the main camera to provide live, person-to-person assistance for visual interpretation in apps like Be My Eyes, giving users more ways to understand their surroundings hands-free.

    Additional Updates

    • Background Sounds becomes easier to personalize with new EQ settings, the option to stop automatically after a period of time, and new actions for automations in Shortcuts. Background Sounds can help minimize distractions to increase a sense of focus and relaxation, which some users find can help with symptoms of tinnitus.
    • For users at risk of losing their ability to speak, Personal Voice becomes faster, easier, and more powerful than ever, leveraging advances in on-device machine learning and artificial intelligence to create a smoother, more natural-sounding voice in less than a minute, using only 10 recorded phrases. Personal Voice will also add support for Spanish (Mexico).2
    • Vehicle Motion Cues, which can help reduce motion sickness when riding in a moving vehicle, comes to Mac, along with new ways to customize the animated onscreen dots on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
    • Eye Tracking users on iPhone and iPad will now have the option to use a switch or dwell to make selections. Keyboard typing when using Eye Tracking or Switch Control is now easier on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro with improvements including a new keyboard dwell timer, reduced steps when typing with switches, and enabling QuickPath for iPhone and Vision Pro.
    • With Head Tracking, users will be able to more easily control iPhone and iPad with head movements, similar to Eye Tracking.
    • For users with severe mobility disabilities, iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS will add a new protocol to support Switch Control for Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs), an emerging technology that allows users to control their device without physical movement.
    • Assistive Access adds a new custom Apple TV app with a simplified media player. Developers will also get support in creating tailored experiences for users with intellectual and developmental disabilities using the Assistive Access API.
    • Music Haptics on iPhone becomes more customizable with the option to experience haptics for a whole song or for vocals only, as well as the option to adjust the overall intensity of taps, textures, and vibrations.
    • Sound Recognition adds Name Recognition, a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to know when their name is being called.
    • Voice Control introduces a new programming mode in Xcode for software developers with limited mobility. Voice Control also adds vocabulary syncing across devices, and will expand language support to include Korean, Arabic (Saudi Arabia), Turkish, Italian, Spanish (Latin America), Mandarin Chinese (Taiwan), English (Singapore), and Russian.
    • Live Captions adds support to include English (India, Australia, UK, Singapore), Mandarin Chinese (Mainland China), Cantonese (Mainland China, Hong Kong), Spanish (Latin America, Spain), French (France, Canada), Japanese, German (Germany), and Korean.
    • Updates to CarPlay include support for Large Text. With updates to Sound Recognition in CarPlay, drivers or passengers who are deaf or hard of hearing can now be notified of the sound of a crying baby, in addition to sounds outside the car such as horns and sirens.
    • Share Accessibility Settings is a new way for users to quickly and temporarily share their accessibility settings with another iPhone or iPad. This is great for borrowing a friend’s device or using a public kiosk in a setting like a cafe.

The former Chairman of the Executive Board and the Supervisory Board and Honorary Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Jürgen Weber, passed away yesterday at the age of 83.

Karl Ludwig Kley, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG:

“Lufthansa as we know it today would be unthinkable without Jürgen Weber. During his years as Chairman of the Executive Board and Supervisory Board, he shaped and molded the company. He understood the unifying power of air travel. The founding of the Star Alliance and the expansion of Frankfurt Airport are largely his achievements. He had an equally strong impact within the company. No one else appealed to the hearts and minds of the employees as much as Jürgen Weber. No one else shaped the culture of Lufthansa as he did. We bow our heads in respect for the life’s work of an exceptional person. Jürgen Weber will always have a place of honor in the history of our company.”

Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG expressed his deep sympathy on behalf of all employees of the Lufthansa Group:

„Jürgen Weber was called Mr. Lufthansa – and rightly so. He dedicated his entire professional life to our company and shaped it. Like no other, Jürgen Weber embodied the renewal of Lufthansa during its restructuring and privatization in the 1990s. Crucial decisions and developments at Deutsche Lufthansa AG are – and will remain – inextricably linked to his name. We at Lufthansa owe Jürgen Weber a debt of gratitude for his outstanding service to the Lufthansa Group. Our thoughts are now with his family.”

Jürgen Weber joined Lufthansa as a young engineer in 1967, and, following a rapid rise in the technical department, was appointed to the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG in 1990. He led the company from 1991 to 2003 as CEO and was Chairman of the Supervisory Board from 2003 to 2013, after which he remained Honorary Chairman of the Supervisory Board until his passing. During his time in office, he was not only responsible for the reorganization, restructuring and privatization of the airline with the crane on its tail, but he also set Lufthansa back on course to success, demonstrating his strategic foresight already in the 1990s. As one of its founding fathers, Jürgen Weber created the Star Alliance – still the largest global airline alliance today.

Headline: Enclosed Space Fatalities – A united industry response

In its previous three meetings, the cross-industry working group’s review of prior enclosed space incidents identified operational, commercial, technical and training related issues as recurring contributing factors. This review also included an analysis of incidents to understand the relationship between vessel type, incident location onboard, and the rank or role of those who died.

Fatalities due to asphyxiation and/or poisoning in the shipping industry continue, despite the existence of numerous rules, regulations, and best practice guidelines on how to avoid such deaths.

The working group agreed that the maritime industry does not need new procedures relating to enclosed space entries. Based on preliminary human factor analysis, it has identified the contribution of ‘performance influencing factors’ (factors that make errors more or less likely) to many of the enclosed space entry incidents.

The working group is committed to deepening its understanding and sharing its learnings with the wider industry, with the intention of helping organisations identify and improve these factors to prevent incidents from happening.

To support this, the group has set up a confidential survey to receive feedback and case studies from mariners and seafarers, which can be accessed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/enclosed_space.

Examples of enclosed space incidents can also be submitted by email to enclosedspaceaccidents@intermanager.org. Please include the approximate date, the ship’s name, and a brief description of the accident. Information gathered will be kept strictly confidential.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Using a Mythic agent to optimize penetration testing

    Source: Securelist – Kaspersky

Headline: Using a Mythic agent to optimize penetration testing

    Introduction

The way threat actors use post-exploitation frameworks in their attacks is a topic we frequently discuss. It’s not just about analysis of artifacts for us, though. Our company’s deep expertise means we can study these tools to implement best practices in penetration testing. This helps organizations stay one step ahead.

Being experts in systems security assessment and information security in general, we understand that a proactive approach always works better than simply responding to incidents that have already occurred. And when we say “proactive”, we imply learning new technologies and techniques that threat actors may adopt next. That is why we follow the latest research, analyze new tools, and advance our pentesting expertise.

This report describes how our pentesters are using a Mythic framework agent. The text is written for educational purposes only and intended as an aid for security professionals who are conducting penetration testing with the system owner’s consent.

It’s worth noting that Kaspersky experts assign a high priority to the detection of the tools and techniques described in this article as well as many similar others employed by threat actors in real-world attacks.

These efforts to counter malicious actors use solutions like Kaspersky Endpoint Security that utilize the technologies listed below.

    • Behavioral analysis tracks processes running in the operating system, detects malicious activity, providing added security for critical OS components such as the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service process.
    • Exploit prevention stops threat actors from taking advantage of vulnerabilities in installed software and the OS itself.
    • Fileless threats protection detects and blocks threats that, instead of residing in the file system as traditional files, exist as scheduled tasks, WMI subscriptions, and so on.
    • There are many others too.

However, it’s worth noting that since our study discusses a sophisticated attack controlled directly by a malicious actor (or a pentester), more robust defense calls for a layered approach to security. This must incorporate security tools to help SOC experts quickly detect malicious activity and respond in real time.

These include Endpoint Detection and Response, Network Detection and Response and Extended Detection and Response solutions as well as Managed Detection and Response services. They provide continuous monitoring and response to potential incidents. Usage of threat intelligence to acquire up-to-date and relevant information about attacker tactics and techniques is another cornerstone of comprehensive defense against sophisticated threats and targeted attacks.

This study is the product of our exploration and analysis: how we as defenders can best prepare and what we should expect. What follows is part one of the report in which we compare pentesting tools and choose the option that suits the objectives of our study. Part two deals with how to communicate with the chosen framework and achieve our objectives.

    An overview of ready-made solutions

Selecting pentesting tools can prove a challenging task. Few pentesters can avoid detection by EPP or EDR solutions. As soon as a pentesting tool gains popularity among attackers, defensive technologies begin detecting not only its behavior, but also its individual components. Besides, the ability to detect the tool becomes a key performance indicator for these technologies. As a result, pentesters have to spend more time preparing for a project.

At the same time, many existing solutions have flaws that impede pentesting. Ethical hackers, for example, frequently use Cobalt Strike. The Beacon agent uses a specific opcode sequence in platform version 4.9.1. To avoid detection by security solutions, opcodes must be changed, but that breaks the agent.

Immutable opcode sequence for Cobalt Strike agent

Another example is Metasploit’s Meterpreter payload, whose signatures appear in Microsoft’s antivirus database more than 230 times, making the tool significantly more difficult to use in projects.

The Sliver framework is an open-source project. It is in active development, and it can handle pentesting tasks. However, this project has a number of drawbacks, too.

    1. The size of a payload generated by the framework is 8–9 megabytes. This reduces flexibility because the ideal size of a pentesting agent that ensures versatility is about 100 KB.
    2. Stability issues. We’ve seen active sessions drop. The framework once lacked support for automatically using a proxy server from the Windows configuration, which also complicated its use. This has since been addressed.

The Havoc framework and its Demon payload are currently gaining popularity: both are evolving, and both support evasion techniques. However, the framework currently suffers from a lack of compliance with operational security (OPSEC) principles and stability issues. Additionally, payload customization in Havoc is limited by rigid parameters.

As you can see, we cannot fully rely on open-source projects for pentesting due to their significant shortcomings. On the other hand, creating tools from scratch would require extra resources, which is inefficient. So, it’s crucial to strike the right balance between building in-house solutions and leveraging open-source projects.

    Payload structure

First, let’s define what kind of payload is required for pentesting. We had decided to split it into three modules: Stage 0, Stage 1 and Stage 2. The first module, Stage 0, creates and runs the payload. It must generate an artifact, such as a shellcode, a DLL or EXE file, or a VBA script, and provide maximum flexibility by offering customizable parameters for running the payload. This module also handles the circumvention of security measures and monitors the runtime environment.

The second module (Stage 1) must allow the operator to examine the host, perform initial reconnaissance, and then use that information to establish persistence via a payload maintaining covert communications. After successfully establishing persistence, this module must launch the third module (Stage 2) to perform further activities such as lateral movement, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, and credential harvesting.

    Three payload modules

The Stage 0 module has to be written from scratch, as available tools quickly get detected by security systems and become useless for penetration testing. To implement the Stage 1 module, we settled on a hybrid approach: partially modifying existing open-source projects while implementing some features in-house. For the third module (Stage 2), we also used open-source projects with minor modifications.

This article details the implementation of the second module (Stage 1) in detail.

    Formulating requirements

In light of the objectives outlined above, we will formulate the requirements for the Stage 1 module.

    1. Dynamic functionality, or modularity, for increased resilience. In addition, dynamic configuration allows adding techniques via new modules without changing the functional core.
    2. Ensuring that the third payload module (Stage 2) runs.
    3. Minimal size (100–200 KB) and minimal traces left in the system.
    4. The module must comply with OPSEC principles and allow operations to run undetected by security controls. This means we must provide a mechanism for evading signature-based memory scanning.
    5. Employing non-standard (hidden) communication channels, outside of HTTP and TCP, to establish covert persistence and avoid network detection.

    Choosing the best solution

While defining the requirements, we recognized the need for a modular design. To begin, we need to determine the best way to add new features while running the tasks. One widely used method for dynamically adding functionality is reflective DLL injection, introduced in 2008. This type of injection has both its upsides and downsides. The ReflectiveLoader function is fairly easy to detect, so we’d need a custom implementation for a dynamic configuration. This is an effective yet costly way of achieving modularity, so we decided to keep looking.

The PowerShell Empire framework, whose loader is based on reflective PowerShell execution, gained popularity in the mid-2010s. The introduction of strict monitoring and rigid policies surrounding PowerShell marked the end of its era, with .NET assemblies, executed reflectively using the Assembly.Load method, gaining popularity. Around this time, toolkits like SharpSploit and GhostPack emerged. Cobalt Strike’s execute-assembly feature, introduced in 2018, allowed for .NET assembly injection into a newly created process. Process creation followed by injection is a strong indicator of compromise and is subject to rigorous monitoring. Injecting code requires considerable planning and tailored resources, plus it’s easily detectable. It’s best used after you’ve already performed initial reconnaissance and established persistence.

The next stage of framework evolution is the execution of object files in memory. An object file (COFF, Common Object File Format) is a file that represents a compiled version of the source code. Object files are typically not full-fledged programs: they are needed to link and build a project. An object file includes several important elements ensuring that the executable code functions correctly.

    • Header contains information about the architecture, timestamp, number of sections and symbols, and other metadata.
    • Sections are blocks that may include assembly code, debugging information, linker directives, exception information, and static data.
    • Symbol table contains functions and variables, and information about their location in memory.

Using object files allows you to avoid loading a CLR environment into the process, such as when using a .NET assembly and the Assembly.Load method.

Moreover, COFF is executed in the current context, without the need to create a process and inject the code into it. The feature was introduced and popularized in 2020 by the developers of the Cobalt Strike framework. And in 2021, TrustedSec developed the open-source COFF Loader that serves the same purpose: the tool loads a COFF file from disk and runs it. This functionality perfectly aligns with our objectives because it enables us to perform the required actions: surveying, gaining persistence within the system and initiating the next module via an object file – if we incorporate network retrieval and in-memory execution of the file in the project. In addition, when using COFF Loader, the pentester can remain undetected in the system for a long time.

To interact with the agent in this study, we decided to use BOFs (Beacon Object Files) designed for Cobalt Strike Beacon. The internet offers a wide variety of open-source tools and functions created for BOFs. By using different BOFs as separate modules, we can easily add new techniques at any time without modifying the agent’s core.

Another key requirement for Stage 1 is a minimal payload size. Several approaches can achieve this: for instance, using C# can result in a Stage 1 size of around 20 KB. This is quite good, but the payload will then have a dependency on the .NET framework. If we use a native language like C, the unencrypted payload will be approximately 50 KB, which fits our needs.

Our payload requirements are supported by the Mythic framework. Its microservice architecture makes it easy to add arbitrary server-side functionality. For example, the module assembly process takes place inside a container and is fully defined by us. This allows us to replace specific strings with arbitrary values if detected. Furthermore, Mythic supports both standard communication protocols (HTTPS, TCP) and covert channels, such as encrypted communication over Slack or Telegram. Finally, the use of C ensures a small payload size. All of these factors make the Mythic framework and the agent interacting with it to execute BOFs an optimal choice for launching the second module.

    Communication model

In the communication process between the agent and the framework, we need to focus on three elements: payload containers, C2 profile containers, and the translation container. Payload containers hold the agent’s source code and are responsible for building the payload. C2 profile containers are responsible for communicating with the agent. They must receive traffic from the agent and send it to Mythic for further processing. The translation container handles the encryption and decryption of network traffic. We’ll be using HTTP when interacting with Mythic, so the C2 profile will be a web server listening on ports 80 and 443.

Communication flow between the agent and the Mythic framework

    Loading an object file

To load and execute an object file, the agent must read the .text section and replace all zeros with relative addresses of external functions and static data. This is known as symbol relocation, which addresses references within a particular section of the object file. Furthermore, the agent places these symbols in memory, for example, after the code section.

To find external functions, we’ll have to analyze the libraries specified in the linker directives of the object file. To do this, we used the functions LoadLibrary, GetModuleHandle and GetProcAddress.

The diagram below clarifies how an object file is loaded and memory is allocated for its components.

Object file representation on disk (left) and in memory (right)

    The downsides of the solution

The method described above has a number of shortcomings. Because object file execution is blocking, multiple tasks cannot run simultaneously. For long-term tasks, other methods such as process injection are necessary; however, this is not a critical flaw for the second module, as it is not intended for long-running tasks.

Several other shortcomings are difficult to mitigate. For example, since the object file is executed in the current thread, a critical error will terminate the process. Furthermore, during the execution of the object file in memory, the VirtualAlloc function is used for section mapping and relocation. A call to this WinAPI might alert the security system.

Implementing additional functionality during development and compilation can help complicate analysis and detection for more efficient pentesting and a longer agent life cycle.

    Conclusion

Mythic’s features make it a convenient pentesting tool that covers the bulk of pentesting objectives. To utilize this framework efficiently, we created an agent that extends ready-made solutions with our own code. This configuration gave us suitable flexibility and enhanced protection against detection, which is most of what a pentester asks of a working tool.
