  • MIL-OSI Economics: Samsung UK Reveals Final Ten Shortlist For Annual Solve For Tomorrow Competition

    Source: Samsung

LONDON, U.K. – May 06, 2025 – Samsung Electronics UK announced the final 10 teams shortlisted for their annual tech for good competition, Samsung Solve for Tomorrow. Now in its fifth year, the initiative is designed to empower young people, regardless of their background, by encouraging them to submit tech-for-good solutions that benefit society by addressing real-world issues.

Solve for Tomorrow is free to enter, and open to all young people aged 16-25 across the UK and Ireland. 508 applicants submitted ideas to this year’s competition before the deadline on 12th January, and 49 teams were then shortlisted to take part in expert-led workshops and Samsung mentoring. For the first time this year, all 100 young people shortlisted also received a Samsung Galaxy Tab to support them through their workshops.

Participants took part in five weeks of design thinking, market research & prototyping workshops alongside 1-2-1 Samsung mentorship, to help develop their design concepts ready for re-submission in April.

Commenting on her experience as a Samsung Mentor, Jessica Diniz, Senior Manager at Samsung Design Europe, said: “It’s so inspiring to work with young entrepreneurs and creatives, whose ideas will fuel technological possibilities for a more equitable world in the next era of AI. Their highly progressive ideas and high-quality design output bring fresh perspectives on the power of STEM, Innovation and Design to pioneer positive change.”

To decide which teams would make it through to the final stages of the competition, our panel of Samsung and industry experts closely reviewed participants’ submissions, whittling down the shortlist to just 10 final teams across both age categories (16-18 and 18-25).

Charlotte Heard, Managing Director at Mettle Studios, was part of the judging panel for this year’s 18-25 category and commented on our finalists:“It was such a joy to be immersed in the ideas that felt truly innovative and aimed to solve some of society’s biggest challenges. I can’t wait to see what the winning candidates go on to achieve – we’re so lucky to have a platform like Samsung Solve for Tomorrow to support the change makers of the future.”

The final 10 have now made it through to the ultimate phase of the competition, where they will pitch their idea to another panel of Samsung & industry experts, to be in with the chance of winning a £10,000 cash prize, Samsung tech and further mentoring to help them make their idea a reality.

The winners and runners up for each age category (16-18 and 18-25) will be announced following the awards ceremony in July.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: A Path Back to School: Samsung and Bal Raksha Bharat Celebrate Young Dreamers with Nanum Kiosk Initiative

    Source: Samsung

A place of celebration for courage, hope, and new beginnings

On a bright afternoon filled with smiles, laughter, and a heartfelt welcome song, Bal Raksha Bharat, an NGO in Gurugram, turned into a place of celebration for courage, hope, and new beginnings.

In collaboration with Bal Raksha Bharat (Save the Children), this unique CSR program aims to send 200 children back into classrooms and toward a brighter future. As part of Samsung’s Nanum Kiosk initiative, employees have been quietly tapping into a powerful cause. Each tap of their ID cards at the Nanum Kiosk is a gesture of support for underprivileged children, helping them find their way back to school.

The Nanum Kiosk is an innovative donation platform installed across Samsung offices.  Employees can contribute by simply tapping their ID cards, with each tap donating a fixed amount (e.g. INR 50) to support underprivileged children.  These kiosks have been instrumental in raising substantial funds for supporting underprivileged children.

Samsung hosted a special recognition ceremony for young achievers—children who, after completing a bridge course by Bal Raksha Bharat, have now secured admission in public schools. These children were felicitated with certificates and warm wishes for their new academic journeys.

SP Chun, Corporate Vice President, Samsung Southwest Asia, addressed the gathering with heartfelt encouragement, reminding everyone present of the power of education and community. He handed over certificates to all children and interacted with them.

“Samsung wants you to read more, learn more and dream more. We are always here to support your dreams and cheer for you,” he said in his address.

    All smiles with the certificates

Adding joy and soul to the ceremony was a musical performance by the children. Their voices echoed through the premises, resonating with the spirit of resilience and determination.

As the first batch of children stepped forward for their certificates and photo-op with the Samsung leadership, the room brimmed with quiet pride. The second batch followed, beaming with excitement. The event ended on a touching note with a Thank You Card Ceremony, where children distributed handmade notes to express their gratitude.

Thank you cards from students at Bal Raksha Bharat

Through the Nanum Kiosk initiative, Samsung employees are not just donating money—they’re nurturing futures. Each child sent back to school is a story of possibility, made real by shared compassion and purpose.
This day was a reminder that when people come together to care, incredible change can happen. And for these children, the journey is just the beginning.

    Source: Bank for International Settlements

    • The sixth edition of the G20 TechSprint global competition calls for solutions to address trust and integrity in finance.
    • The G20 TechSprint invites development of innovative solutions for verifiable digital identity, consumer-consented credit data portability and fraud and cyber risk mitigation.
    • Open to developers worldwide; winners to be chosen in November by an independent judging panel.

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) today launched the sixth edition of the G20 TechSprint focused on developing innovative solutions to promote integrity and trust in finance.

The G20 TechSprint is an international competition to explore innovation and develop cutting-edge technological solutions to pressing global challenges. Following the success of the previous competitions in the areas of regulatory compliance and supervision, green and sustainable finance, central bank digital currencies, cross-border payments and solutions to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals, this year’s TechSprint will focus on three problem statements, as formulated by the BIS Innovation Hub and SARB:

    • Digital identity solutions: establish trust among financial institutions through innovative, verifiable and privacy-preserving digital identity technologies.
    • Credit data portability: improve the ability of small and medium-sized enterprises to access finance through secure, consumer-consented data exchange solutions that facilitate seamless cross-border sharing of credit information.
    • Solutions to mitigate fraud and cyber risks: drive the wider adoption of fast payment systems globally – and consequently promote financial inclusion and economic growth – through technology designed to reduce fraud and cyber risks.

The G20 TechSprint is more than a competition. It is a collaborative effort to redefine the future of finance. Our collective challenge is clear: to develop scalable, adaptable, and inclusive solutions that reinforce trust and integrity across borders. The themes of South Africa’s presidency- solidarity, equality, and sustainability-should inspire us to break down barriers and forge partnerships that have lasting global impact.

Agustín Carstens, General Manager of the BIS

Innovation must drive inclusion, build trust and deliver lasting impact on our continent and across the world. We are looking forward to solutions that will bring more people into the digital economy and enable cross-border trade.

    Lesetja Kganyago, Governor, SARB

  • MIL-OSI Economics: WTO report highlights improved impact of technical assistance activities in 2024

    Source: WTO

Headline: WTO report highlights improved impact of technical assistance activities in 2024

The report reveals that the WTO delivered more than 300 technical assistance activities in 2024, the highest number in the past decade. Over 19,000 government officials were trained in various trade-related areas, including more than 5,000 from least-developed countries (LDCs).
This represents a 19 per cent rise in the number of technical assistance activities compared to 2023. The increase was largely driven by a significant shift towards e-Learning, which saw the number of participants soar by 45 per cent, accounting for nearly three-quarters of all participants.
The report notes the sustained effectiveness of the activities in assisting beneficiaries in expanding their knowledge and skills. This is reflected by the three percentage point increase in fully or partially met performance targets compared to 2023.
The year was also marked by the successful completion of the WTO accession processes of Comoros and Timor-Leste, both of which benefited from extensive technical assistance throughout their negotiations.
“This support was instrumental in strengthening their capacity to navigate the complexities of WTO accession, which took 17 years for Comoros and nearly eight years for Timor-Leste,” WTO Deputy Director-General Xiangchen Zhang notes in the foreword to the report. “Their successful accession highlights the critical role of technical assistance in building the expertise and institutional frameworks necessary for developing economies to fully participate in global trade.”
WTO technical assistance continued to combine virtual, in-person and e-Learning formats in 2024 in order to provide targeted support aligned with beneficiaries’ evolving priorities. Standards, agriculture, market access for goods (including trade facilitation), trade in services, trade remedies and fisheries subsidies were among the top ten topics covered by technical assistance activities. Meanwhile, existing offerings exploring other WTO topics or responding to emerging challenges and opportunities, such as digital trade and trade and environment, continued to be developed.
However, the report struck a note of caution with regard to increasing financial constraints, as 2024 saw voluntary contributions to WTO technical assistance reach their lowest level in 25 years, with unearmarked funds falling to below CHF 3 million. While the cost-saving measures implemented by the WTO Secretariat have so far ensured that technical assistance delivery levels and quality are preserved, cash reserves are nearing exhaustion. Should the current low level of voluntary contributions persist, activities will inevitably suffer in volume and quality, leading to reduced impact over time.
The full report is available here.
    Background
A core function of the WTO, technical assistance and capacity-building activities aim to enhance professional and institutional trade capacities in developing and least-developed WTO members and observers. These activities equip beneficiaries with the know-how to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by the rules-based multilateral trading system, and to address related challenges. Within the WTO Secretariat, the Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC) oversees these activities.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Transparency remains a central focus at subsidies committee discussions

    Source: WTO

Headline: Transparency remains a central focus at subsidies committee discussions

The Chair referred to the most recent WTO Secretariat update, noting that 82 members have yet to submit their 2023 and 2021 subsidy notifications, and that  72 members have still not submitted their 2019 notifications. He reiterated his call for members to submit their notifications promptly, emphasizing that all members benefit from the collective effort of timely and complete notifications. Eight members echoed these calls and commended the Secretariat’s continued efforts to support members in preparing and submitting their notifications, including through targeted technical assistance.
    Review of members’ subsidy notifications
During the special meeting, the Committee examined 2023 new and full subsidy notifications submitted by Albania, Bahrain, Ecuador, India, Kazakhstan and Montenegro. Additionally, it reviewed outstanding notifications from earlier cycles, notably from Madagascar (2019). The Committee also continued its review of 2023 subsidy notifications from Australia, Brazil, China, Eswatini, Nepal, Norway, Türkiye, the United States and Vanuatu. It also continued its review of a 2019 notification from the Russian Federation.
    National legislation
The Committee reviewed legislative notifications submitted by Armenia, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States. It also continued its review of the legislative notifications of the European Union, Ghana, the Kyrgyz Republic, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and the Solomon Islands.
Reports of members on countervailing duty actions
Members reviewed semi-annual reports on countervailing duty actions submitted by Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, the European Union, India, Mexico, Peru, Chinese Taipei, Türkiye,  the United States and Viet Nam for the period July to December 2024.
The Committee also considered notifications on preliminary and final countervailing duty actions from members including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The Chair emphasized the need for regular and timely submissions of these reports to ensure ongoing transparency and effective oversight by the Committee.
    Other matters
The Chair recalled the 31 December 2015 deadline for the elimination of export subsidies by members that received “fast track” extensions under Article 27.4 of the SCM Agreement. He noted that only 15 of the 19 members that had received extensions have provided the final required notifications. He called on the remaining members to comply without delay.
The Committee reviewed the updated GNI per capita calculations for members listed in Annex VII(b) of the SCM Agreement. According to the latest figures, Senegal graduated from Annex VII(b) while the following members did not: Congo, Ghana, Honduras, Kenya, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan and Zimbabwe. Headline: Unlock what’s next: Microsoft at May 19-22 Red Hat Summit 2025

Learn more about the solutions that Microsoft and Red Hat have to offer that drive technological advancements and empower organizations.

As the tech world eagerly anticipates Red Hat Summit 2025, Microsoft is proud to announce its role as a platinum sponsor at the event. Red Hat Summit is a premier enterprise open source event for IT professionals to learn, collaborate, and innovate on technologies from the datacenter and public cloud to edge and beyond. This year, Microsoft’s collaboration with Red Hat promises to be a highlight, showcasing the power of partnership and the innovative solutions that arise from it.

Over the years, this partnership has achieved significant milestones, transforming the way businesses operate and deliver value to their customers. By combining Microsoft’s cloud expertise with Red Hat’s open-source leadership, we have created a synergy that drives technological advancements and empowers organizations to achieve more.

One of the key benefits of this partnership is the seamless integration of Red Hat technologies with Microsoft Azure. This integration provides customers with a robust and flexible platform to build, deploy, and manage their applications. Whether it’s modernizing legacy systems or developing new cloud-native applications, the combination of Azure and Red Hat offers a plethora of capabilities and support. For instance, Red Hat OpenShift on Azure enables organizations to run containerized applications with ease, leveraging the scalability and security of Azure. Additionally, Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Azure provides a reliable and secure operating system for mission-critical workloads.

Build your next great app with free Azure services today >

At Red Hat Summit 2025, attendees will have the opportunity to explore these technologies in depth. Microsoft and Red Hat will showcase new features and integrations that enhance the capabilities of Azure and Red Hat solutions. From improved performance to enhanced security, these advancements are designed to meet the evolving needs of businesses in today’s digital landscape.

    • RHEL for WSL: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is now available for use with Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). WSL is a feature of Microsoft Windows that allows developers to run Linux distributions. With RHEL for WSL, developers can run a RHEL development environment on Windows without having to spin up a traditional virtual machine (VM). With a no-cost Red Hat Developer subscription, developers can download the latest release of RHEL as a WSL image during their install and easily run both Windows and RHEL at the same time on their Windows machine.
    • Azure Red Hat OpenShift: Microsoft and Red Hat are enhancing security with Confidential Containers on Azure Red Hat OpenShift, now in public preview. This feature offers hardware-level protection for workloads via memory encryption and secure execution environments, addressing compliance needs in sectors like healthcare and financial services. Managed identity for Azure Red Hat OpenShift is also in public preview, transitioning organizations from static service principals to dynamic, token-based credentials. This reduces operational complexity and security risks, facilitating container platform adoption in regulated environments. Azure Red Hat OpenShift has expanded to the Spain Central region with plans for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Central and Microsoft Azure Government (MAG) regions by Q2 2025. Enhancements include OpenShift 4.16 support, enterprise-grade cluster-wide proxy, and Ddsv5 instance performance optimization. Additionally, OpenShift Virtualization on Azure Red Hat OpenShift is entering public preview, enabling customers to accelerate VM migration to Azure without refactoring while unifying management of VMs and containers on a single platform.
    • RHEL landing zone: The Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) on Azure Landing Zone guide provides everything needed to deploy, manage, and scale RHEL instances using Azure-specific system images. Software lifecycle automation is simplified with Red Hat Satellite and Red Hat Satellite Capsule, ensuring timely updates and patches. Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) are enhanced through Azure’s on-demand capacity reservations, guaranteeing reliable availability in Azure regions. Optimized identity management infrastructure deployment minimizes latencies and eliminates replication failures.
    • Application awareness and wave planning in Azure Migrate: The new application-aware method sets the stage for grouping dependent resources into waves and provides technical and business insights for the entire application to help you decide on Azure targets and tooling. Migrate applications with dependent workloads, as one to collocate in Azure for optimal performance and cost.
    • JBoss EAP on App Service: JBoss EAP on App Service is a jointly developed and supported managed solution from Red Hat and Microsoft for running enterprise Java applications with maximum productivity. We have recently made important changes to make JBoss EAP on App Service as cost-effective as possible. This includes a 60% plus license fee price reduction for Pay-As-You-Go plans, memory optimized SKUs, a free tier for a lower barrier to entry, the availability of JBoss EAP 8, as well as a soon-to-be-released ability to Bring-Your-Own-Subscription to App Service.
    • JBoss EAP on Azure Virtual Machines: Robust solutions to run JBoss EAP on Azure Virtual Machines are now generally available (GA). The solutions are developed and supported by Red Hat and Microsoft. The solutions include templates available in the Azure Portal to automate most boilerplate resource provisioning tasks. The solutions also include JBoss EAP VM images published in the Azure Marketplace.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: [Testimonials] Positive Impact of Samsung Innovation Campus on WSU Students

    Source: Samsung

In today’s digital age, traditional qualifications alone are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of the local economy – practical skills, problem-solving abilities and technological fluency are now also essential to develop work-ready job seekers and entrepreneurs with in-demand skills needed by the local economy.

In response to this need, Samsung has – over the years through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives such as the global Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) – collaborated with esteemed academic institutions such as the Walter Sisulu University (WSU). This strategic partnership was formed in an effort to bridge the gap between traditional education and the demand for skills training tailored specifically for the current job market that requires modern tech expertise.

Importantly, Samsung recognises how essential SIC is in driving economic growth and technological advancement in South Africa and the continent as a whole. This partnership with WSU therefore, aims to provide ICT education to students from underserved communities in the Eastern Cape. This global SIC programme is designed to provide practical, cutting-edge training in digital skills and has since inception, also trained participants on a range of soft skills to foster talented youth who will go on to shape the future society. This SIC programme is a forward-thinking initiative that seeks to continue addressing the evolving demands of the modern workforce.

These are some of the reasons why Samsung has remained dedicated to making a long-term social impact by investing in education, youth skills training and technological innovation. Over the years, the company has invested in youth development and workforce skills training by equipping students with in-demand digital skills needed by the local economy.
Along with core competencies such as artificial intelligence (AI) as well as Coding and Programming (C&P) training in Python – SIC has been providing progressive knowledge to students ensuring that they are both academically qualified and industry work-ready.

These high-demand skills are positioning the country’s youth for careers in technology-driven sectors and entrepreneurship. The institution is making these incredible strides because it has long recognised that the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is reshaping education, work and daily life. WSU has now also ensured that technology is integrated into its teaching, research and student development initiatives. Importantly, the university has now made sure that digital transformation has become a strategic priority, by establishing an AI Centre that will serve as a hub for advanced digital skills training, research and innovation.
For Samsung’s CSR initiatives, measurable impact on the country’s youth including young women has always been essential. This SIC programme has now touched the lives of about 71 young people at WSU – a combination of both males and females. With this programme, WSU students have now been prepared for careers in technology by creating both employment and entrepreneurial opportunities that will help them make a positive impact on society. For this reason, Samsung spoke to some alumni students about their experience in the programme and this, is what they had to say:

A graduate and an alumni from the WSU-SIC programme who is originally from Lusikisiki, Atsho Nota has a diploma in Application Development studies which she believes has given her a strong foundation in technology and problem-solving.

Atsho has always been passionate about technology and how it can be used to improve people’s lives. She added that this programme has made a significant difference in her personal and professional growth.

“It has given me the opportunity to develop hands-on technical skills”, she explained: “I’ve now gained industry experience and it has improved my confidence in working with advanced technology. Also, the practical training has enhanced my problem-solving abilities significantly and prepared me for real-world challenges in the tech industry,” she added. Atsho’s future plans include advancing her career in the tech industry, possibly specialising in software development. She hopes to use her skills to contribute to innovative solutions and maybe even start her own business in the future. Atsho also wants to continue learning and growing in the field of technology to stay updated with industry advancements.

Another impressive alumni student from the SIC programme is Lazola Leonardo Mbangata, who is currently running his own start-up company called Xero Technologies, while also pursuing a postgraduate degree – majoring in Software development. Born and raised in Butterworth, this young man has various certifications in data science and cyber security. For Lazola, this SIC programme has played a crucial role in his career and advancement in IT.

He believes that studying Python and AI has advanced his development skills and enhanced his projects for automation and usability – thus bringing him one step closer to his future goal of AI security. “I decided to sign up for the programme because of my interest in AI and Python because I believed that this would grow my mind and understanding in the field, he said. “Also, working with a big company like Samsung was potentially an opportunity for crucial doors to be opened for me.”

What Lazola found most interesting during the SIC lessons is the diversity in IT and the opportunity to not only build software but also to deal with software management and publishing. These skills that Lazola acquired have ensured that his business is on track for success. What is still a bit of a challenge is finding local clients, however he’s still quite determined and very optimistic.

For Samsung, this partnership with WSU exemplifies the kind of university-industry collaboration that has ensured that together, they can continue training the leaders of tomorrow to use AI tools and other innovative technology platforms to effectively maximise the benefits of these new and exciting emerging technologies in their future careers.
These testimonies are proof that this SIC initiative not only enhances individual career prospects, but also contributes significantly to building a group of resilient and future-ready workforce as well as technology entrepreneurs. Samsung’s efforts underscore its broader commitment to technological innovation and sustainable community development in the country.

Sinethemba Mpambane, DVC: Institutional Support and Development at WSU said: “In a country that is facing significant youth unemployment, this SIC curriculum is a game-changer as it offers students direct access to opportunities in AI, software development and digital solutions, while also fostering innovation and problem-solving. As WSU, we are now looking forward to strengthening our collaboration with Samsung, expanding these programmes and continuing to empower students with future-ready skills.”

Mpambane added that all these WSU-driven initiatives will complement this SIC programme by providing a platform for students and industry partners to engage in cutting-edge AI-driven projects. For WSU – the impact of this SIC programme is clear. Graduates are leaving with more than just certificates; they possess tangible, in-demand skills that enhance their employability and entrepreneurial potential.

And furthermore, WSU in partnership with Samsung is committed to shaping the next generation of African technology leaders. This institution is seeking to become an impactful, technology-infused African university that remains relevant in today’s digital world, while preparing its students for the future. The SIC programme is but one of the ways of ensuring that WSU achieves its vision for the future.

“But you, O LORD, sit enthroned forever,
your renown endures through all generations.
You will arise and have compassion on Zion,
for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come.
    For her stones are dear to your servants;
her very dust moves them to pity.
The nations will fear the name of the LORD,
all the kings of the earth will revere your glory.
For the LORD will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory.
    He will respond to the prayer of the destitute;
he will not despise their plea.
Let this be written for a future generation,
that a people not yet created may praise the LORD”

GLP-1R agonists poised to redefine chronic disease treatment beyond diabetes and obesity, says GlobalData

    Posted in Pharma

GLP-1 receptor agonists, once focused on treating diabetes and obesity, are now emerging as potential treatments for a broader range of chronic conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. As evidence builds around their wider therapeutic benefits, particularly in targeting insulin resistance, drug developers are accelerating efforts to expand their use and potentially transform how multiple high-burden diseases are managed, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Thanks to their mechanism of action and targeting weight loss, drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro could treat diseases with the highest prevalences.

GlobalData’s latest report “GLP-1R Agonists Label Expansions/Repurposing: Market Overview,” showcases an analysis of the GLP-1R agonists pipeline in multiple indications, highlighting the areas of major opportunity.

From metabolic disorders, to neurodegenerative, the chronic aspect of these conditions makes them the most prevalent in our society, and it seems that some mechanisms of action are common to most of them.

Costanza Alciati, Pharma Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The GLP-1R agonists space is bound to expand. Their therapeutic potential just keeps evolving as studies widen the knowledge we have on this drug class. For instance, they combat insulin resistance, a mechanism which appears to be at the core of different conditions, from type 2 diabetes and obesity to neuroinflammation contributing to Alzheimer’s disease.”

At present, the mechanisms by which GLP-1R agonists exert their effects are not fully understood, and for this reason the totality of their actions on the body is not either.

Alciati continues: “Ensuring long-term safety of GLP-1R agonists treatment is one of the biggest unmet needs in the space, even though the medicines seem to be safe, and their positive points appear to outweigh the negatives.”

The key opinion leaders (KOLs) interviewed by GlobalData referred to the possibility of GLP-1R agonists to become the “champions of the champions” if pivotal trials prove they are effective for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders. KOLs also mentioned that “there might be a chance that treatment guidelines, as we know them, could change completely.”

Alciati concludes: “Companies are now racing to develop the next best candidate targeting the GLP-1 receptor, not only to gain market share in the metabolic diseases space, but potentially to be able to reposition a drug in many indications and this is a great market opportunity for any drug developer.”

Three CAR-T therapies to capture over 70% of T-Cell immunotherapy market in 2025, forecasts GlobalData

    Posted in Pharma

T-cell immunotherapies (TCI) are redefining cancer care, with chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies witnessing significant momentum. In 2025, just three drugs- Carvykti by Legend Biotech, Yescarta by Gilead Sciences, and Breyanzi by Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS)– are expected to capture over 70% of the global T-cell immunotherapy market, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report  “T-Cell Immunotherapy Landscape: Comprehensive Analysis of Current Drugs and Dynamics,”  reveals that the TCI space is entering a new growth phase, driven by clinical success and investor confidence. Sales are forecast to double between 2024 and 2027, as CAR-T therapies continue expanding beyond blood cancers into solid tumors.

Eleni Tokali, Pharma Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Cavykti, Yescarta, and Breyanzi are not only setting the standard for CAR-T therapies- but they are also poised to capture a massive share of the TCI market in 2025 alone, which highlights their impact and commercial momentum.”

Currently, CAR-T therapies account for 73% of all T-cell therapies in the pipeline- five times more than TCR-based therapies. Of the 16 approved TCI drugs to date, 13 are CAR-Ts, primarily targeting hematological malignancies. Despite this, TCR-based therapies and other T-cell approaches are gaining traction, and their expanded potential in solid tumors is becoming a major focus in research.

Tokali adds: “CAR-T therapies are at the forefront of T-cell immunotherapy, but the entire space, including TCR-based therapies, is advancing rapidly.”

GlobalData projects 44 new TCI drug approvals by 2029, with 18 expected in 2027 alone.

Tokali concludes: “The TCI market has seen an incredible surge in deal activity, with a 1,600% increase in deal volume from 2010 to 2024. In 2023 alone, 226 deals were recorded, with equity offerings making up 44% of all financing activity, signalling growing investor confidence in the field.”

South Africa card payments to exceed $158 billion in 2025 amid digital surge and inclusion push, forecasts GlobalData

    Posted in Banking

The South African card payments market is on a solid growth trajectory, projected to reach ZAR2.9 trillion ($158.8 billion) in 2025. This momentum is driven by a growing shift toward digital payments, bolstered by enhanced financial inclusion, expanding payment infrastructure, and rising consumer preference for speed, safety, and convenience in everyday transactions, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s Payment Cards Analytics reveals that card payment value in South Africa registered a growth of 10.3% in 2024 to reach ZAR2.7 trillion ($149.4 billion). This growth is primarily fuelled by the rise in the consumer spending and wider acceptance of card payments among merchants.

Yasaswini Pujitha, Banking and Payments Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The South African payment landscape is evolving rapidly, supported by growing banking population, rising contactless payment adoption and developing payment infrastructure. The average frequency of payments per card stands at 118.1 times in 2024, which is higher compared to its peers such as Nigeria (51), Egypt (24.2), Morocco (10.9), and Kenya (5.3).”

Debit card payments held a significant share of the total card payments market in South Africa, accounting for 74% in total payment value in 2024. This is primarily driven by the expanding banking population and increasing use of debit cards for low-value, day-to-day payments. Meanwhile, digital banks and fintech companies such as Discovery Bank, TymeBank, and Bank Zero are offering innovative banking services, further increasing competition in the debit card space.

Credit and charge cards, on the other hand, held the remaining 26% share of card payments by value in 2024. The adoption and usage of these cards is driven by the associated value-added benefits offered by banks, such as cashback, reward points, discounts, and installment payment facilities. This growth is also supported by the rising middle class and a young, working population.

The rise of contactless payments is contributing to the overall card payments growth with banks and scheme providers increasingly promoting this technology. Both consumers and merchants are embracing the contactless technology in the country.

According to GlobalData’s 2024 Financial Services Consumer Survey*, 68.4% of the respondents in South Africa indicated having access to a contactless card and used it for payments.

Growing adoption of contactless card payments for transport services is also contributing to the expansion of card payment market. South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) is implementing the nationwide rollout of contactless payment systems at toll plazas.

Effective from 1 December 2024, magstripe card payments were phased out at certain toll gates, with a complete transition to contactless payments expected by 31 May 2025. This initiative is backed up by the financial institutions, along with payment scheme providers such as Visa and Mastercard.

Pujitha concludes: “South Africa’s payment card landscape is set for steady growth over the next five years, marked by increased adoption of payment cards amid a boarder digital transformation. The proliferation of digital banks, an increasing preference for contactless technology, and improving payment infrastructure are the key drivers for this growth. The market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7% between 2025 and 2029 to reach ZAR3.8 trillion ($206.2 billion) in 2029.”

*GlobalData’s 2024 Financial Services Consumer Survey was carried out in Q2 2024. Approximately 67,292 respondents aged 18+ were surveyed across 41 countries.
