    Council issues advice in advance of Storm Ashley

    In anticipation of Storm Ashley, which is expected to bring strong winds and could cause possible disruption on Sunday, Derry City and Strabane District Council is encouraging the public to take all the necessary precautions to keep safe.

    In the interests of health and safety, Council is closing all of its public parks, play parks and grass pitches on Sunday and advising the public to avoid using open spaces and areas where there are trees.

    The public are advised that there could also be some disruption to recycling centres across the Council area with Pennyburn, Strathfoyle and Strahan’s Rd Centres remaining closed on Sunday.

    Council outdoor sports and leisure facilities and courts will also be closed. All scheduled matches due to take place on Saturday 19th October on Council pitches will proceed, however all matches scheduled for Sunday 20th October have been cancelled due to the current weather warning and Council is in the process of contacting clubs and user groups accordingly.

    While the Cemeteries will remain open, the public are advised to take extreme care.

    All of our Leisure Centres will open as normal with the exception of Brooke Park Leisure Centre which will be closed and users advised to use facilities at Templemore Sports Complex.

    Routine inspections will be carried out on all facilities on Monday prior to them reopening.

    Householders and businesses across the Council area are encouraged to take the necessary measures to keep them and their property safe.

    Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
    Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
    Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
    Some roads and bridges may close
    Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible

    What steps to take.

    Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

    Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

    People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

    If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

    Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly. When a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.

    Newport, Quebec – Quebec’s fish and seafood industry is facing increasing competition and the need to adapt to an ever changing market. Working together through the Quebec Fisheries Fund (QFF), the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec are helping the industry to innovate and reach its full potential.

    Today, the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, announced over $830,000 in QFF funding for five projects in the Gaspé Peninsula and the Lower St. Lawrence. The Government of Canada’s contribution to these projects is $583,515, while the Government of Quebec is contributing $250,077.

    Launched in 2019, the QFF supports innovation-driven projects in the areas of commercial fisheries, aquaculture, seafood harvesting and processing, and science partnerships. The funding announced today will help create opportunities and enhance the market value of high-quality, sustainable fish and seafood in Quebec.

    CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $50,000,000 for FirstEnergy through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), made available through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s (IIJA) Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program.

    This project will support grid and transmission upgrades across West Virginia benefitting more than 50,000 customers and 450 critical facilities like schools and hospitals. Additionally, this project includes the creation of a new, four-year apprenticeship program with a training center in Fairmont, W.Va. Ranking Member Capito authored a letter in support of FirstEnergy’s application for this funding in March of this year.

  • MIL-OSI: Elevate Renewables Selected to Receive $27.5 Million in DOE Federal Funding for Innovative Use of Battery Energy Storage System Through “Green Sync” Inertia Project at Devon Generating Station in Milford, CT.

    BOSTON, Oct. 18, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Elevate Renewables (“Elevate” or the “Company”), a leading battery storage development company is pleased to announce that its Innovative Inertia Project at the Devon Generating Station in Milford, CT. has been selected to receive $27.5 million in federal funding under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program.

    The Innovative Inertia Project aims to reconfigure an existing fossil-fueled peaking unit and enable the deployment of a battery energy storage system (“BESS”) to provide synchronous condensing (“green sync”) and other essential grid services. Elevate is focused on repurposing existing energy infrastructure as traditional thermal resources retire (i.e., brownfields) and intermittent and renewable resources increasingly become the predominant resources on the grid.

    The Company will demonstrate that its BESS can provide inertia and synchronous condensing – remedying any immediate imbalance between electrical supply and system demand on the power grid- grid services historically offered by fossil fuel assets. The integration of this BESS technology will showcase its scalability and replicability, contributing to grid stability as Connecticut and the United States progress through the clean energy transition. It will also enhance resilience and deliver significant community and decarbonization benefits, particularly in historically overburdened areas of the state, by reducing emissions and supporting greater adoption of renewable energy sources.

    Elevate will partner with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (“CT DEEP”) and the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (“CT PURA”) on the project.

    Innovative Inertia Project Anticipated Outcomes and Benefits:

    Resilience and Reliability for Grid Stability and Restoration: The project will provide about 23 MVA (mega volt-amperes) of reactive power for grid stabilization and up to 20 MW/80 MWh of energy resilience infrastructure available from a BESS capable of black-start grid restoration operations.

    Scalability Potential: With over 1,000 combustion turbine sites across the U.S., the project has the potential to be scaled nationwide. By proving the efficacy of BESS-enabled synchronous condensing and other battery-enabled grid services, the project could serve as a model for similar brownfield repurposing efforts and support increasing grid reliance and reliability needs expected as traditional thermal generation facilities retire.

    Community Benefits: Through a $2.7 million community investment program, the project will prioritize Disadvantaged Communities, including a distressed municipality near the generating station. The project will support the retraining of at least 20 power plant employees. In addition, the project commits to contracting businesses that are majority-owned or controlled by underrepresented persons or groups of underrepresented persons in New England and is committed to hiring workers from vulnerable or underrepresented communities for construction. Some or all of this project is anticipated to be executed in collaboration with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and other existing unions.

    Established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program is a $10.5 billion investment to enhance grid flexibility, improve the resilience of the power system against extreme weather, and ensure American communities have access to affordable, reliable, electricity when and where they need it. GRIP funding is administered by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office (GDO).

    Montreal (Quebec), October 18th, 2024 — The renovation and expansion of an old industrial building to create the Battat Art Center, the CAB, will reduce the ecological footprint of the building and support art and culture. The project is made possible by a $10.2 million investment from the federal government.

    Announced by the Honorable Mélanie Joly, this project, located on Port-Royal Street in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough, will offer a variety of spaces for creation and performance, supporting artists and promoting public appreciation of the arts.

    A thriving economy needs strategic investments in green infrastructure to build a sustainable future for Canadians, with access to good jobs, while limiting impacts on the local environment.

    The funding for this artistic building will be used to preserve the exterior envelope, as well as its existing architectural and structural components made of wood, masonry, and steel. The Center has prioritized the enhancement of the built heritage rather than starting from scratch. A new structure, primarily made of large timber from Quebec, will be erected to promote this craftsmanship and structural system. Additionally, the expansion will be built following zero-carbon building design standards and will increase the existing space from two to four floors, allowing for the installation of artist studios and exhibition rooms. This initiative supports the values of sustainable development by integrating ecological and economic strategies while providing quality spaces for the artistic community.

    The GICB program aims to improve the places Canadians work, learn, play, live and come together by cutting pollution, reducing costs, and supporting thousands of good jobs.

    Through green and other upgrades to existing public community buildings and new builds in underserved communities, the GICB program helps ensure community facilities are inclusive, accessible, and have a long service life, while also helping Canada move towards its net-zero objectives by 2050.

    Furthermore, the Battat Art Center will also receive a maximum financial support of one million dollars from the Government of Quebec, through the Programme d’innovation en construction bois (PICB).

    The CAB is a nonprofit multidisciplinary creation and dissemination space that gives artists the freedom to experiment without external constraints or expectations. The center stands out from the expected contemporary art trajectory by prioritizing the artist and their process over the final product.

    Housed in a former stone masonry building located in the heart of Ahuntsic-Cartierville in Montreal, the CAB is one of the first significant artistic pillars in the community.     Government support for waterfront development project opens opportunities for celebrations, promotion of culture and history

    A place to celebrate

    Today, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Member of Parliament for Cardigan, attended the grand opening of the new Stratford Waterfront Gathering and Event Space, and announced a total investment of $500,000 to the Town of Stratford to support the extensive boardwalk and event ground upgrades. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA.

    Minister MacAulay was joined by Stratford Deputy Mayor Steve Gallant and the Honourable Gilles Arsenault, PEI Minister of Environment, Energy, and Climate Action.

    The new gathering space, part of a larger waterfront core area development plan, features prominently the existing Michael Thomas Statue and Diversity Fountain, erected in 2014. Additions include an extended timber boardwalk and large plaza with seating, lookout platforms, electrical for outdoor performances, as well as lighting upgrades along the boardwalk. The investment will promote active transportation, elevate tourism, and support business growth within the community.

    Today’s announcement further demonstrates the Government of Canada’s dedication to a more inclusive, greener, and sustainable future for communities in Atlantic Canada.

    Federal, provincial governments invest to help Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador expand tourism offerings

The Government of Canada, together with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, is investing to help expand and promote the region’s culinary tourism offerings.

    Investments helping to expand culinary tourism

    Today, the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA, announced a non-repayable federal investment of $981,000 to help Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador promote and develop culinary experiences in the province.

    Minister Hutchings also launched Elevate Tourism – a new, time-limited initiative to help private sector (commercial) tourism businesses attract more high-impact, value-driven visitors from outside Atlantic Canada. Nearly half these visitors are looking for trips that give them an elevated experience.     The Government of Canada announces a significant investment to promote the vitality of official-language minority communities.

    VAL THERESE, Ontario, October 18, 2024

    Investing in Francophone daycare centres and French education promotes the vitality of official language minority communities and strengthens their sense of belonging.

    Today, Marc G. Serré, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and to the Minister of Official Languages, and Member of Parliament (Nickel Belt), accompanied by Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament (Sudbury), announced an investment of more than $4.2 million in a daycare centre in Val Therese and the EarlyON Centre in Ontario. They made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages.

    The investment will allow for the construction of a new 88-place daycare centre in Val Therese, a project that will meet the growing needs of families in the community. This daycare centre will have five rooms: one for 10 infants, two for 30 toddlers, and two for 48 preschool-aged children. The official opening is scheduled for September 2025.

    This initiative is in addition to another project, the construction of the new French Catholic elementary school in Val Therese. The integration of a daycare centre into this school will allow children to start learning in a French-speaking institution from early childhood, strengthening their education in the French language from an early age.

    This project reflects the Government of Canada’s ongoing commitment to supporting French-language education and early childhood services, while promoting the development of local community educational infrastructure.

    The investment was made through the Action Plan for Official Languages 2023–2028: Protection–Promotion–Collaboration, unveiled on April 26, 2023.

    The Ontario government’s investment in the daycare centre and the EarlyON Centre amounts to nearly $1.4 million.

    Five Rosneft subsidiaries have won the VI National Award “Corporate Museum”. The award ceremony took place in Nizhny Novgorod. It was attended by 250 delegates from all over the country and neighboring countries.

    The Corporate Museum competition consisted of two stages – expert evaluation and project defense. Participants from 51 cities of Russia, the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Azerbaijan presented 107 projects in various nominations.

    RN-Uvatneftegaz won a second-degree diploma in the New Exposition category. The company’s corporate museum was opened eight years ago. It regularly hosts excursions for schoolchildren, including those from Rosneft Classes and the First Movement, students of specialized specialties from universities and industry veterans. At the exposition, visitors can see unique historical exhibits, as well as a model of an oil field, which presents key production and social facilities. In addition, the exhibition hall has a virtual hologram guide. This year, the museum has already been visited by more than 350 guests.

Its exposition presents the entire history of the enterprise: from a fragment of the layout of the construction sites of Combine-16 (the future ANHK) to the products of modern production.     Syzran Oil Refinery received a 3rd degree diploma in the nomination “Best educational projects of a corporate museum”. The museum and presentation complex, opened on May 9, 2019, consists of two halls: a historical hall and a presentation hall. The historical hall displays exhibits and art objects, as well as multimedia kiosks that show video materials from different years and interactive notes about the plant. The presentation hall can easily be transformed into a cinema hall or a place for holding meetings, gatherings, and training seminars.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Rosneft Completes Reconstruction of Ob River Embankment in Nizhnevartovsk, 1.2 km Long

    A large-scale project to create a new look for the Ob River embankment, the calling card of Nizhnevartovsk and a favorite place for city residents to relax, was implemented within the framework of an agreement between Rosneft Oil Company and the government of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug of Yugra.

    The construction of the embankment was preceded by engineering arrangement of the coastline. Strengthening with metal structures and reinforced concrete retaining walls with waterproofing and artificial stone cladding was carried out. The drainage system is arranged taking into account the features of the relief, the level of underground waters and the depth of soil freezing.

    The embankment is landscaped while preserving the natural relief of the area. Coverings for walking, running and cycling paths have been created. Viewing platforms, recreation areas with sun loungers and swings have been built in the walking areas. Lawns for family recreation have been profiled on the slopes. Modern play complexes made of environmentally friendly materials have been installed for children, which support the visual concept of the embankment.

    Several locations are intended for holding cultural events – an open amphitheater, an exhibition complex and an area for holding folk craft fairs have been built on the boulevard. The entire embankment area is accessible to people with limited mobility.

    Volunteers of Samotlorneftegaz and activists of the Movement of the First, who planted greenery, took part in the grand opening of the embankment. The organizers held a sports and musical warm-up for them.

    Rosneft implements social projects aimed at creating favorable living conditions in the regions of its presence. In particular, it supports initiatives in the field of creating a comfortable urban environment.

    U.S. coal exports from the Port of Baltimore rebounded at the end of May 2024, according to recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Shipments from the port’s two coal-loading terminals had stopped for almost two months following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26. The main shipping channel into the Port of Baltimore reopened on May 21.

    In April, only 63,658 short tons of coal could be loaded for export, compared with 2.3 million short tons in April 2023. This small amount could be exported, even though the main channel into the Port of Baltimore was closed, because one of the loading terminals used barges to transport smaller loads to a vessel anchored in the Chesapeake Bay.

    Coal loadings in May recovered to slightly less than one million short tons, with that activity mostly occurring after the reopening. In June, coal loadings for export soared to 2.9 million short tons, the most in the U.S. Census Bureau data series—which starts in 2000—as terminals worked through their backlog of vessels. Loadings in July declined slightly to around 2.0 million tons, although that amount was still more than the five-year (2019–23) average.

    Coal exports in July typically are lower, as mining companies, railroads, and port terminals usually conduct maintenance during that month. This year, the coal industry made up for the suspension of shipments in April and May by increasing shipments in July.

    In our Short-Term Energy Outlook, we expect exports from the Port of Baltimore for the 2024 calendar year will be consistent with previous years because we expect exports to remain high in the second half of 2024. In 2023, the Port of Baltimore set a five-year high, with coal exports totaling 28 million short tons. We expect total exports in 2024 should be equal to or greater than the 20 million tons loaded in both 2021 and 2022.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Polytechnicians at the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum

    Last week, the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum 2024 (SPIGF-2024) was held at the ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre, in the exhibition and scientific-business programme of which the Polytechnic University traditionally takes an active part.

    The forum visitors were able to get to know the university better in the Polytechnic’s unified catalogue. More than eight pages were devoted to the main areas of activity of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport.

    SPIGF is one of the key global events in the gas industry. The participation of Polytechnic divisions in the exhibition program of the forum opened up a wide range of opportunities for meeting potential customers and exchanging experience, says Anatoly Popovich, Director of IMMiT.

    Specialists from the Laser and Additive Technologies Research Laboratory (LIAT) at IMMiT presented their developments at the Polytechnic stand: components of the hot tract of gas turbine engines repaired by laser cladding, 7 and 10 mm thick samples welded in one pass without edge preparation using laser welding and hybrid laser-arc welding, and the mobile laser cladding complex “Nomad”, designed to restore large-sized products on the customer’s premises.

    If for some reason the enterprise cannot bring the product to the laboratory, then its specialists go to the site with a mobile complex. At the moment, they have already restored four rotors of the GTK-10-4 gas pumping units. In the laboratory itself, the “Nomad” is also used for laser welding and restoration of smaller products.

    The forum’s rich program brought together all the most advanced and significant areas of the industry. The opportunity to present the developments of the research laboratory at the forum made a significant contribution to determining the optimal scenarios for the further development vector of the division, – shared Mikhail Kuznetsov, head of the Scientific Research Laboratory “LiAT” of IMMIT SPbPU.

    The Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade presented educational programs created and implemented in partnership with PJSC Gazprom and its subsidiaries at the SPbPU exhibition stand: two master’s programs and two programs of additional professional education. The master’s program “IT Economics and Business Analysis” is a corporate master’s program of the university and Gazprom Neft, aimed at training specialists in the field of business analysis. This master’s program is reinforced by modules of specialized focus and project activities within the framework of research work built on business cases of Gazprom Neft. At the forum, we productively discussed with our partners strategic plans for the development of new corporate educational programs and other areas of joint activity taking into account current changes in the economy, – said Irina Rudskaya, Director of the Scientific and Educational Center for Information Technology and Business Analysis of Gazprom Neft.

    The Master’s program “Human Resources Management and Organizational Development”, created and implemented jointly with Gazprom Gazifikatsiya with the information and status support of the presidential platform of the ANO “Russia – Country of Opportunities”, was presented by the Higher School of Industrial Management of IPMEiT. The program was developed based on practical tasks and requests of the university’s corporate partners and is aimed at training specialists capable of implementing organizational design at all stages of the company’s life cycle, forming the company’s HR brand, developing and implementing a human resource management strategy based on building individual personnel development trajectories.

    This year, together with our partners Gazprom Gazifikatsiya, Gazprom Pitanie and the Russia — Land of Opportunities platform, with grant support from Gazprom, we created six online courses that we modularly integrated into the program’s curriculum, explained Olga Kalinina, Director of the Higher School of Industrial Management.

    Based on the created online courses, IPMEiT also presented two continuing education programs on motivation, personnel selection and personnel branding, developed for specialists in the field of HR management and heads of structural divisions of the oil and gas and energy industries. The presentation of the continuing education programs was attended by a student of the master’s program “Digital Business Management”, specialist of the personnel efficiency support group of Gazprom Neft exploration and production Ekaterina Khodarkevich, and a student of the bachelor’s program “Oil and Gas Enterprise Management”, an employee of the marketing department of Gazpromneft-SM Daniil Guryev.

    Professor of the Higher School of Industrial Management Alexander Ilyinsky took part in the round table of the Energy Initiative “International Business Congress” on the topic “Promising technologies for monetizing natural gas and ensuring energy security”. Alexander Ilyinsky also held business negotiations with the General Director of Gazprom Flot Yuri Shamalov, where they discussed promising areas of cooperation in the field of educational and scientific activities.

    Aleksandr Volkov, a practicing teacher, associate professor at the Higher School of Industrial Management, and CEO of the Grand Media Service communications agency, moderated the conference “Gas Industry Companies in New Realities: How to Be Most Effective in PR and Digital Communications?” and gave a presentation on a proven tool for comprehensive promotion in the gas industry, Public Performance. Among the audience were students from the Higher School of Industrial Management studying in the educational programs “Marketing” and “Oil and Gas Enterprise Management”.

    Students of the Higher School of Engineering and Economics took part in the round table “Distributed generation as a solution to the problems of energy-deficient regions”, where the prospects for implementing innovative solutions for distributed generation were discussed: own generation of electricity and heat supply.

    Students of the Higher School of Administrative Management, led by the head of the IPMEiT Directorate, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Administrative Management Maxim Ivanov, attended the conference “New Technologies for the Oil and Gas Industry”, the panel session “Technological Leadership: New Horizons” and the round table “Current Issues of Legislative Support for the Oil and Gas Industry”. They got acquainted with samples of modern equipment and advanced technologies at the RosGazExpo exhibition, an exposition of the subjects of the Russian Federation, which presented projects demonstrating their potential in the oil and gas sector.

    Such forums captivate with their scale and friendly, but at the same time businesslike atmosphere. The stand of the Polytechnic University stood out from the rest and attracted many visitors, it was impressive. We went around the stands that were related not only to the oil and gas industry, but also to the agricultural, transport industry and to the specialization of various regions of Russia. We learned that many representatives of large companies are graduates of the Polytechnic University, and, of course, they were happy to tell us about their work, – the students of the Higher School of Economics shared their impressions.

    Students of the Higher School of Industrial Management of the educational programs “Industrial Management (Energy)” and “Management of Oil and Gas Enterprises” together with teachers Olga Konovalova and Vyacheslav Melekhin participated in the round table “Union of Science and Industry in the Transformation of the World Energy Market”, where current issues and trends in the development of the international energy market, transformation of the gas market, the role of international cooperation and joint educational programs were discussed.

    The Gas Forum is certainly a large-scale event that has become a platform for demonstrating the technological and innovative capabilities of the domestic industry. For our students, this is an invaluable experience of participating in one of the most important events in the Russian economy, says Olga Konovalova, associate professor at the Higher School of Management and Management.

    Students of IPMEiT demonstrated significant results in the Virtual Academy from Gazprom. From June 3 to July 15, as part of the preparation for the SPIGF-2024 Youth Day, an educational program and selection round of the Virtual Academy project were held. This year, more than 130 candidates from 30 countries representing 45 universities participated in it. The Virtual Academy program included lectures in English by leading experts and scientists in the field of energy and information technology. Participants completed individual tasks and submitted them for expert assessment. As a result of the competitive selection, only 30 candidates with the best results received an invitation to the Youth Day. Among them, three students of the Higher School of Industrial Management: Nikita Kuznetsov and Leonid Alkhimovich (Bachelor’s program “International Business”) and Arab Yusof Abad Mohammad (international program “Development of International Business”). Moreover, Nikita Kuznetsov’s team, where he was the captain, took first place based on the results of participation in the case.

    This year, our institute made its small contribution to the work of the Polytechnic University at the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum. We prepared for individual events in advance, planned the participation of both adult colleagues-teachers and students.     What you need to know: California’s battery storage capacity has surged by more than 3,000 MW in the last six months alone, now exceeding 13,000 MW total — a 30% increase as the state endured its hottest summer on record. 

    SACRAMENTO – California’s battery storage capacity has expanded rapidly, increasing by 3,012 megawatts (MW) in just six months to reach a total of 13,391 MW. This growth marks a 30% increase since April 2024, underscoring the state’s swift progress in building out clean energy infrastructure, especially during a summer marked by record-breaking heat. 

    Within the past five years, California has grown its battery storage capacity by more than 15 times, up from just 770 MW in 2019. To put this progress into perspective, it took the state nearly five years to reach 10,000 MW in early 2024 but just six months to add the most recent 3,000 MW.

    “We’re cutting pollution by adding more clean power to our grid. That means rapidly expanding battery storage to capture more of this clean energy that’s produced during the day, like solar, for when it’s needed when the sun goes down. These are the essential resources that we’ll continue needing more of as the climate crisis makes heat waves hotter and longer.”

    Deploying battery storage is a critical component of the state’s climate and clean energy goals. The state is projected to need 52,000 MW of energy storage capacity by 2045. Today, it’s a quarter of the way there.

    Increasing storage allows California’s grid to store energy from clean energy sources like solar during the day and use it during peak demand in the evening. Ramping up battery storage is a key part of Governor Newsom’s energy roadmap for achieving the state’s ambitious climate goals and a 100% clean electric grid.

    Strengthening grid stability and clean energy resources

    The recent surge in battery storage has significantly enhanced California’s ability to maintain grid stability during extreme weather. Throughout the summer of 2024, battery storage reliably discharged to support the grid during the net peak hours – a critical stretch of the day when the sun sets and solar resources rapidly go offline.

    Battery storage discharge to the grid increased from 6,000 MW this spring to more than 8,000 MW this summer. 

    Programs like the California Energy Commission’s Demand Side Grid Support (DSGS) are also playing a crucial role in grid reliability. This summer the program reached 515 MW of capacity to reduce grid stress during extreme conditions. The program includes one of the largest storage virtual power plants in the world with a capacity exceeding 200 MW. The virtual power plant works by tapping into a network of customer-owned battery storage systems which are typically paired with solar. Together, the individual devices provide power back to the grid. By leveraging energy assets, DSGS helps reduce the use of fossil-fuel power and supports California’s transition to a 100% clean electric grid. 

    California’s clean energy leadership

    The state continues to set clean energy records. From January through September, clean energy supply equaled or exceeded demand in the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) service area for 1,084 hours over 179 different days. That’s equivalent to more than 45 days of meeting demand with 100% clean electricity. In August, solar energy serving the grid reached a new peak of 19,600 MW.

    Addressing the session, Smt. Patel emphasized on the new rules and regulatory procedures introduced in India. She said, “new regulations published in the areas of clinical trial as New Drugs and Clinical Trial rules 2019 and Medical Device Rules 2017 have promoted scientific and ethical research at par with global expectation and international practices. The medical device rules include risk-based classification, bringing all devices under regulation through registration and framing regulatory pathway.” She further stated that “there is robust pre-approval and post approval regulatory procedures of all medical devices, diagnostics managing product lifecycle indicating robust control.  We are collaborating globally with international organizations such as IMDRF, ISO, WHO and regional network like SEARN to harmonise regulatory requirements in the area of medical devices and diagnostics.”

    The Union Minister noted that India has been recently recognised as an affiliate member of IMDRF. “Recognition of Indian Pharmacopoeia by the Pharmacopoeial Discussion Group (PDG) is another milestone marking the harmonisation and recognition of regulatory standards”, she added.

    Smt. Patel highlighted that the recently published revised Schedule M, aligned with WHO requirements of good manufacturing practices for various products including biologicals, investigational products, further establish the harmonisation goal. “This coupled with e-governance for all regulatory procedures have established good regulatory practices in the regulation of medical products in India”. She also informed that “AMR containment is another priority area in which India is building its strategy for effective management and control.”

    Lauding WHO’s efforts in upgrading the regulatory systems of different countries, Smt. Patel stated that “the way WHO promotes partnership, reliance, experiential learning, pharmacovigilance systems, anticounterfeiting technologies and monitoring systems and reduction in use of animal experimentation need a word of appreciation. What is more important is the model of collaboration, deliberation and inclusive decision making which bring all the stakeholders together for best outcome.” On this note, Smt. Patel also underscored India’s commitment to work closely with WHO in contributing to many of these areas. “We have wealth of knowledge and appreciation for inclusive processes. Hosting ICDRA is a demonstration of our intent and commitment towards Global Public Health”, she said.

    On the Government’s commitment to Healthcare, the Union Minister said that “the focus is on building a strong healthcare system that meets the needs of our population. Programs like Ayushman Bharat ensure that over 500 million people have access to quality healthcare. This shows our commitment to making healthcare a right for everyone, not just a privilege.”

    She also highlighted the Union Government’s enthusiasm about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the face of healthcare. “AI can assist us in making quicker decisions, enhancing patient care, and speeding up research. By adopting new technologies, we can offer improved services to our people and achieve better health results”, she said.

    The Union Minister concluded her address by urging everyone to work together for a healthier future. “The ICDRA is not just a conference; it is a chance for us to collaborate, innovate, and support one another in our shared mission for better health for all”, she stated.

    Speaking on the occasion, Dr VK Paul said that “quality medicines improve the quality of life, human productivity as well as the way of life.” He said that this year’s ICDRA is crucial for its commitment to strengthen regulatory environment worldwide, especially coming after the Covid-19 pandemic.

     

    Dr Paul highlighted the efforts being taken on healthcare sector by the present government such as the launch of the world’s largest health assurance scheme and a massive effort being taken in digital health. He said the future of healthcare in India and the world will be driven by technology and noted that India with its rich talent pool, strong government initiatives on digital health and medical infrastructure can be a driver of this change.

    Dr Paul informed that India licenced 8 vaccines for use during the pandemic through a proper regulatory process. He noted that India developed different variants of vaccines including mRNA, DNA, nasal vaccines etc which were available for a fraction of the cost of other vaccines that were available in the world.

    He also pointed out India’s heritage of a rich traditional system of medicines being practiced for hundreds of years. He underscored the importance of mainstreaming such traditional medicinal practices which can aid in improving the healthcare of people.

    Dr Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Dept of Health Research and DG, ICMR highlighted the crucial role of regulators in health research. He said, “In the first three months of the pandemic, India developed indigenous tests at one-fortieth of the cost. Similarly, within nine months of the pandemic, India approved a Covid-19 vaccine.” He informed that three diagnostic tests have also been developed for MPox which were approved by CDSCO.

    Dr Yukiko Nakatini, Assistant Director-General, WHO noted that ICDRA 2024 is the first ICDRA after the Covid-19 pandemic. She noted that one urgent need highlighted by the pandemic was the need for a strong regulatory system. Dr Yukiko also congratulated India for its achievement of retaining Maturity level III for vaccine regulation.”

    Ms. Kimberlee Trzeciak, Deputy Commissioner, US Food and Drug Administration, USA highlighted the opportunities and risks brought about by the introduction of advanced drug manufacturing practices as opposed to the traditional methods. She also emphasized on the need to ensure compliance with quality and underscored the importance of collaboration between drug regulatory bodies across the world.
