    Westminster City Council has recognised the importance of the Prince Charles Cinema to the local area by making it an asset of community value.   

    The Prince Charles Cinema is one of the last independent cinemas operating in the West End and has been a staple in the area since opening in 1962.   

     A letter announcing the news from the council states how the cinema supports local filmmakers by providing platform for independent works and hosting film festivals.  

     It has also been a hosting venue for the BFI London Film Festival since 2016, and also participated in festivals from China, Czechia, the Philippines, Poland, Romania and Ukraine. including a partnership with the National Film & Television School.  

     The cinema is known for its eclectic programming, which includes cult classics, independent films, and international cinema and attracts over 250,000 visitors annually. In January 2025 alone, 155 films featured in its programme, a figure that far outstrips the choice offered by any other cinema in the country.

    On April 14, 2025, Blue Origin launched six women – Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyễn, Gayle King, Katy Perry, Kerianne Flynn and Lauren Sánchez – on a suborbital journey to the edge of space.

    The headlines called it a historic moment for women in space. But as a tourism educator, I paused – not because I questioned their experience, but because I questioned the language. Were they astronauts or space tourists? The distinction matters – not just for accuracy, but for understanding how experience, symbolism and motivation shape travel today.

    In tourism studies, my colleagues and I often ask what motivates travel and makes it a meaningful experience. These women crossed a boundary by leaving Earth’s surface. But they also stepped into a controversy about a symbolic one: the blurred line between astronaut and tourist, between scientific achievement and curated experience.

    This flight wasn’t just about the altitude they flew to – it was about what it meant. As commercial space travel becomes more accessible to civilians, more people are joining spaceflights not as scientists or mission specialists, but as invited guests or paying participants. The line between astronaut and space tourist is becoming increasingly blurred.

    In my own work, I explore how travelers find meaning in the way their journeys are framed. A tourism studies perspective can help unpack how experiences like the Blue Origin flight are designed, marketed and ultimately understood by travelers and the tourism industry.

    So, were these passengers astronauts? Not in the traditional sense. They weren’t selected through NASA’s rigorous training protocols, nor were they conducting research or exploration in orbit.

    Instead, they belong to a new category: space tourists. These are participants in a crafted, symbolic journey that reflects how commercial spaceflight is redefining what it means to go to space.

    Space tourism as a niche market

    Space tourism has its origins in 1986 with the launch of the Mir space station, which later became the first orbital platform to host nonprofessional astronauts. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Mir and its successor, the International Space Station, welcomed a handful of privately funded civilian guests – most notably U.S. businessman Dennis Tito in 2001, often cited as the first space tourist.

    Space tourism has since evolved into a niche market selling brief encounters to the edge of Earth’s atmosphere. While passengers on the NS-31 flight did not purchase their seats, the experience mirrors those sold by commercial space tourism providers such as Virgin Galactic.

    Like other forms of niche tourism – wellness retreats, heritage trails or extreme adventures – space travel appeals to those drawn to novelty, exclusivity and status, regardless of whether they purchased the ticket.

    These suborbital flights may last just minutes, but they offer something far more lasting: prestige, personal storytelling and the feeling of participating in something rare. Space tourism sells the experience of being somewhere few have visited, not the destination itself. For many, even a 10-minute flight can fulfill a deeply personal milestone.

    Tourist motivation and space tourism’s evolution

    The push-and-pull theory in tourism studies helps explain why people might want to pursue space travel. Push factors – internal desires such as curiosity, an urge to escape or an eagerness to gain fame – spark interest. Pull factors – external elements such as wishing to see the view of Earth from above or experience the sensation of weightlessness – enhance the appeal.

    Space tourism taps into both. It’s fueled by the internal drive to do something extraordinary and the external attraction of a highly choreographed, emotional experience.

    These flights are often branded – not necessarily with flashy logos, but through storytelling and design choices that make the experience feel iconic. For example, while the New Shepard rocket the women traveled in doesn’t carry a separate emblem, it features the company’s name, Blue Origin, in bold letters along the side. Passengers wear personalized flight suits, pose for preflight photos and receive mission patches or certificates, all designed to echo the rituals of professional space missions.

    What’s being sold is an “astronaut-for-a-day” experience: emotionally powerful, visually compelling and rich with symbolism. But under tourism classifications, these travelers are space tourists – participants in a curated, short-duration excursion.

    Representation and marketing experience

    The image from the Blue Origin flight of six women boarding a rocket was framed as a symbolic victory – a girl-power moment designed for visibility and celebration – but it was also carefully curated.

    This wasn’t the first time women entered space. Since its inception, NASA has selected 61 women as astronaut candidates, many of them making groundbreaking contributions to space science and exploration. Sally Ride, Mae Jemison, Christina Koch and Jessica Meir not only entered space – they trained as astronauts and contributed significantly to science, engineering and long-duration missions. Their journeys marked historic achievements in space exploration rather than curated moments in tourism.

    Recognizing their legacy is important as commercial spaceflight creates new kinds of unique, tailored experiences, ones shaped more by media performance than by scientific milestones.

    The Blue Origin flight was not a scientific mission but rather was framed as a symbolic event. In tourism, companies, marketers and media outlets often create these performances to maximize their visibility. SpaceX has taken a similar approach with its Inspiration4 mission, turning a private orbital flight into a global media event complete with a Netflix documentary and emotional storytelling.

    The Blue Origin flight sold a feeling of progress while blending the roles between astronaut and guest. For Blue Origin, the symbolic value was significant. By launching the first all-female crew into suborbital space, the company was able to claim a historic milestone – one that aligned them with inclusion – without the cost, complexity or risk associated with a scientific mission. In doing so, they generated enormous media attention.

    Tourism education and media literacy

    In today’s world, space travel is all about the story that gets told about the flight. From curated visuals to social media posts and press coverage, much of the experience’s meaning is shaped by marketing and media.

    Understanding that process matters – not just for scholars or industry insiders, but for members of the public, who follow these trips through the narratives produced by the companies’ marketing teams and media outlets.

    Another theory in tourism studies describes how destinations evolve over time – from exploration, to development, to mass adoption. Many forms of tourism begin in an exploration phase, accessible only to the wealthy or well connected. For example, the Grand Tour of Europe was once a rite of passage for aristocrats. Its legacy helped shape and develop modern travel.

    As more people travel to a destination over time, it moves through the tourism area life cycle. During the early exploration phase, the destination has only a few tourists.

    Right now, space tourism is in the exploration stage. It’s expensive, exclusive and available only to a few. There’s limited infrastructure to support it, and companies are still experimenting with what the experience should look like. This isn’t mass tourism yet, it’s more like a high-profile playground for early adopters, drawing media attention and curiosity with every launch.

    Advances in technology, economic shifts and changing cultural norms can increase access to unique destinations that start as out of bounds to a majority of tourists. Space tourism could be the next to evolve this way in the tourism industry. How it’s framed now – who gets to go, how the participants are labeled and how their stories are told – will set the tone moving forward. Understanding these trips helps people see how society packages and sells an inspirational experience long before most people can afford to join the journey.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Moomin merchandise and fashion: 80 years of ultra-savvy marketing that taps into childhood nostalgia

    On a visit to the British Library in London to research this piece, I was preceded by a woman with a lilac-coloured tote featuring a mischievous-looking girl with a severe top knot and black dress. I instantly recognised the distinctive outline of Tove Jansson’s Little My, one of the many brilliant characters of the Moominverse.

    A committed researcher, I summoned up the courage to ask about the bag and the woman carrying it. Anna – visiting the library to work on her fairy tale novel – immediately told all about her hold-all. About how she felt a connection with “fiery and independent” Little My specifically and Moomins generally. About how they took her back to her Swedish childhood, when she would hand-knit the distinctive rotund creatures. I had clearly hit the jackpot with Anna – Moomin owner, wearer and maker, all in one.

    Anna had bought the bag in Sweden, but you don’t have to go to the Scandinavian birthplace of the Moomins to buy into their world. Anna could have gone to the Moomin emporium 30 minutes’ walk away in Covent Garden, or just shopped online.

    Today’s Moomin empire is vast and varied. The Moomins is a brand worth multi-millions, with 800 licencees worldwide. This 80th anniversary year will see capsule collections galore from the likes of Comme des Garçons, Acne Studios and Polarn O. Pyret.

    The products span interior décor, clothing and accessories, ceramics and much, much more. Driven in part by the extension into media that includes video games and TV, Moomins can be found on everything from planes to pencils. It’s very possible to eat, sleep, wear, play Moomin – to immerse yourself entirely in the Moomin world.

    It’s all very typical of the 21st-century media and entertainment asset landscape. And yet, as Moomin aficionados know full well, none of it is new. There has been Moomin merch for as long as there have been Moomins.

    Their creator Tove Jansson took an active role in the development of the Moomin industry. Part of her training had been in illustrations for advertising and when the books and comic strips took off, she herself provided images for a drinks manufacturer selling themed whortleberry juice and other libations. Jansson also designed a board game and supported and oversaw the development of several products and lines, taking immense care over their quality and details.

    The scale of the operation soon became overwhelming and Jansson became increasingly frustrated and resentful of the demands on her creative time. One of her characters, Snufkin, is bemused by why people “liked to have things” (Finn Family Moomintroll, 1948) and the books have a certain anti-consumerist bent. From this perspective, the vast Moomin industry today goes against the spirit of the works.

    And yet. The same book in which Snufkin spoke this way is also a book (whose Finnish original title is The Hobgoblin’s Hat) full to the brim with … things. And those things are invested with immense fascination and power. As the Snork character points out “a top hat is always somewhat extraordinary, of course”.

    Jansson herself had a strong impulse to work with others to extend and flesh out her creations, releasing them from the confines of the books. She was actively involved in early stage adaptations, crafting sets and costumes, and later became absorbed in the long-term creation of a Moominhouse diorama (and series of associated tableaux) with partner Tuulikki Pietilä and physician friend Pentti Eistola.

    Making her creations tangible and tactile was clearly a huge draw for this sculptor’s daughter. One of the most striking features of the Moomins on paper is their smooth rotundity – they’re almost begging to be made into three dimensions.

    So much for the creator. But what of Moomin consumers? People around the world have clearly long wanted to feel closer to the Moomin world, and to buy into it. But why? The reasons are both aesthetic and affective. As for the Swedish-born writer I encountered at the British Library, the Moomins are often keyed into the nostalgia and innocence of childhood. And, as with Anna’s sense of kinship with Little My, people often feel an instinctive affiliation with one or more of the Moomin’s vast and varied cast.

    The books also encapsulate and convey a whole host of associations (or “values” in brand speak) which people identify with, want to share and display. Some of these are relatively banal (though fundamental) and apparent elsewhere – things like friendship, warmth, family and acceptance.

    But there are also features quite specific to Moomins and to Jansson herself: a relish of life and sensuous experience, gender fluidity, space for both light and dark, for wanderlust and the joy of cocooning at home. All of this is conveyed in words and images of exceptional quality and distinction.

    The whimsy is delivered with distinctive Scandinavian style and flair: a clean, pared-back aesthetic and sharp lines accompanied by a rich and bold colour palette. Who wouldn’t want to wear a hand-painted silk AALTO dress by Finnish designer Tuomas Merikoski that transposes the lush greens of one of the later Moomin books, The Dangerous Journey?

    Eight decades after their first publication, Moomins continue to be highly covetable and to catalyse creativity. As with Anna’s Little My tote, they are set to accompany and assist many more generations of writers and creatives in their imaginative endeavours.

    Thousands of people enjoyed a new St Albans City Centre event which has been hailed as “a major success.”

    The first St Albans Spring Festival was a celebration of food, well-being, community spirit and sustainability.

    Among the many attractions were live music, arts and crafts, street theatre and dozens of stalls selling takeaway food, drink and other produce. 

    There were also opportunities to learn, play and create with fun activities.

    The event, on Sunday 18 May, saw St Peter’s Street, Chequer Street and High Street closed to traffic.

    To ensure accessibility, sighted guides and British Sign Language interpreters were  in attendance while there was also priority seating and wheelchair ramps.

    St Albans City and District Council organised the event which was part-funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and sponsored by Code Ninjas, Côte St Albans and Corker Taxis.

    Councillor Anthony Rowlands, Lead for Events, said:

    I am delighted at how well our first Spring Festival was received and have no doubt that it was a major success.

    This was a new City Centre event and the response from our residents and visitors was outstanding. 

    There was a huge turn out with people enjoying the many exciting activities and entertainment that were on offer, much of it free.

    One of our aims was to highlight the District’s thriving hospitality sector and it was pleasing to see so many people sampling their food and drink products at the many stalls that were in operation.

    I would like to thank our events team and our sponsors for making this wonderful event possible and I am sure we will look to bring it back next year. The crowds show there is certainly a demand for it.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Man who fled abroad found guilty of manslaughter

    A man who fled abroad following the fatal stabbing of a teenager in Finsbury Park has been convicted of manslaughter.

    After a six-week trial at Isleworth Crown Court, Kevin Peraj, 23, was found guilty on Friday, 16 May of killing 19-year-old Ahmed Habib under joint enterprise.

    He was brought to justice following a detailed Metropolitan Police investigation, which included reviewing hundreds of hours of CCTV and extensive enquiries within the UK and abroad.

    Detective Inspector Brett Hagen, who led the investigation, said: “I would like to pay my respects to Ahmed’s family, I am, once again, very sorry for your loss. I hope this result, and that Peraj will now face the consequences of his actions, brings some small comfort.

    “Our investigation into the events of that day continues as at least one other man was involved in the attack.

    “I am keen to hear from anyone who may have any information, no matter how small. Please think back to when this happened and come forward if you have any information that may help our investigation.”

    Detectives launched an investigation after receiving reports at about 02:50hrs on Thursday, 11 July 2024 of two men injured in a car in Stroud Green Road, at the junction of Tollington Park, N4.

    Officers, London Ambulance Service and medics from London’s Air Ambulance all attended and found Ahmed, the driver, suffering from stab injuries. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he sadly dead at the scene. The injuries of the second man, aged 21, in the car were not life-threatening.

    Detectives established the two men sustained their injuries in Seven Sisters Road close to Yonge Park before driving to Stroud Green Road where the car came to a stop.

    After reviewing many hours of footage, detectives found CCTV that captured Peraj approaching the vehicle and attacking the passenger in the car.

    In an attempt to escape police, on the night of the murder Peraj tried to flee the country. He made his way to Heathrow Airport, but was too late and missed his flight.

    Instead he left the UK via the Eurotunnel and headed to Albania.

    Quick time enquiries had led officers to identify Peraj, [8.7.01] of Islip Street, NW5. He contacted police after a warrant was issued at his family address and was arrested upon his return to the UK on Tuesday, 16 July.

    He was interviewed and charged with murder the following day under joint enterprise, before his conviction for manslaughter. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

    Peraj will be sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday, 1 August.

    Officers believe Peraj was acting with another man – anyone with information asked to call 101 or ‘X’ @MetCC and give reference 873/11July2024.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Yellowstone’s thermal areas, by the numbers

    Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles is a weekly column written by scientists and collaborators of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. This week’s contribution is from R. Greg Vaughan, research scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

    In Yellowstone, it is often stated that there are more than 10,000 thermal features, including hot springs, geysers, mud pots, and fumaroles.  How do we know that?  Did someone count them?  Well, yes, but making a perfectly accurate count of unique thermal features is nearly impossible, partly because they are changing so frequently.  In the time it would take to map all of them, some would have died out and many new ones would have appeared.  For example, a newly formed fumarole was observed in the Roadside Springs Thermal Area in August 2024, and a newly emerging thermal area with multiple fumaroles was discovered near the Tern Lake thermal area in 2018.  There are also many thermal features that are located under Yellowstone’s lakes that are not included in any inventory.

    Geysers are a specific type of hot spring where an underground hot water reservoir and the characteristics of the plumbing system allow discrete, episodic eruptions of hot water at the surface.  There are only about 1,000 active geysers on Earth; about half of them are in Yellowstone!  According to Scott Bryan, in the 2008 edition of his book The Geysers of Yellowstone, there are at least 700 geysers in Yellowstone, with at least 500 that actively erupt; the remainder are dormant. 

    Most of Yellowstone’s more than 10,000 thermal features are clustered into about 120 distinct thermal areas and thermal water bodies.  A thermal area is a nearly continuous geologic unit that contains multiple thermal features; hydrothermally altered rocks and/or hydrothermal mineral deposits; heated ground and/or geothermal gas emissions; and that is generally barren of vegetation or has stressed/dying vegetation. A thermal water body is usually a lake, pond, or wetland area, that receives heated water from a nearby thermal area, nearshore thermal springs, or from underwater vents. 

    Assessment of Yellowstone’s thermal areas and thermal features comes from field observations, measurements from high-resolution airborne and commercial satellite images, and from quantitative analysis of Landsat 8 and 9 nighttime thermal infrared images. 

    Despite the impressive size of Yellowstone National Park (about 8,992 km2, or 2.2 million acres), the total surface area covered by thermal areas is only about 70 km2 (17,300 acres)—less than 1% of the park’s area. If you closed your eyes and randomly threw a dart at a map of Yellowstone, you are very unlikely to hit a thermal area!  The distribution of thermal areas can be seen in an updated map of Yellowstone’s thermal areas that was recently published after careful analysis of satellite remote sensing data and ground-based observations. 

    The Sulphur Hills Thermal Area, north of Yellowstone Lake, is the hottest thermal area in Yellowstone, with pixel temperatures in satellite images up to 46 °C (83 °F) above the background.  At Sulphur Hills, there is a large area of diffusely venting warm ground that is dotted with dozens of small, isolated fumaroles that are venting gases at 93 °C (200 °F, the boiling temperature at that elevation) right at the surface.  Thermal infrared images from satellite instruments like Landsat 8 and 9 have pixels that are about the size of a football field, which means they measure thermally mixed pixels that represent the average temperature of sub-pixel-scale features.  So, 46 °C (83 °F) above background is pretty hot.  Given the size of the area (0.69 km2, or 171 acres), its geothermal radiant power output is 40–70 MW (megawatts = 1 million watts).

    Turbid Lake, also just north of Yellowstone Lake, is the largest lake in Yellowstone where a significant portion of the surface remains ice free even during the coldest winters.  This is due to thermal input from nearby springs and underwater vents. The lake is the remnant of a large hydrothermal explosion crater that is about 1 km (0.6 mi) across, and it has pixel temperatures up to 28 °C (50 °F) above background and a geothermal radiant power output of about 40–74 MW. 

    Lower Geyser Basin is the largest thermal area in the park—at 15.6 km2 (3,855 acres) it is slightly larger than the town of Gardiner, MT. Its hottest features have pixel temperatures up to 32 °C (58 °F) above background, and its geothermal radiant power output ranges from around 200 to more than 500 MW.

    Summing the estimated geothermal radiant power output for all the thermal areas in Yellowstone yields values that range from 1,500 to 3,100 MW.  To put this into context, 1 MW could power the average home in the U.S for about 1.2 months, or power an electric car for about 3,600 miles.  Scale this up by 1,500 or 3,100 times and you can appreciate the immensity of the Yellowstone geothermal system.

    A US air strike on a migrant detention centre in Sa’ada, north-western Yemen on 28 April killed and injured dozens of migrants and must be investigated as a violation of international humanitarian law, said Amnesty International today, amid reports that hundreds of people have been killed and injured as a result of US air strikes on Yemen since March 2025.

    According to satellite imagery analysis, the US attacks carried out on Sa’ada prison compound struck the migrant detention centre and another building on the site.

    Amnesty International spoke with three individuals who work with African migrant and refugee communities in Yemen.  Two of them, who had visited the migrant detention centre as well as two nearby hospitals, and their morgues in the aftermath of the air strike, confirmed witnessing evidence of a high number of casualties.  The organization also analysed satellite imagery and video footage of horrific scenes showing migrants’ bodies strewn across rubble and rescuers trying to pull badly wounded survivors from the debris.  

    “The US attacked a well-known detention facility where the Huthis have been detaining migrants who had no means to take shelter. The major loss of civilian life in this attack raises serious concerns about whether the US complied with its obligations under international humanitarian law, including the rules on distinction and precautions,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.

    “The US must conduct a prompt, independent and transparent investigation into this air strike and into any other air strikes that have resulted in civilian casualties as well as those where the rules of international humanitarian law may have been violated.”

    Witnesses who visited the Republican hospital and al Talh General hospital in Sa’ada, told Amnesty International they saw more than two dozen Ethiopian migrants who sustained injuries including severe amputations and fractures. They also said that the morgues at the hospitals ran out of space to receive dead bodies, so casualties received from the air strike had to be stacked outside. The ICRC, whose staff were at the site in the immediate aftermath of the attack, also confirmed in a statement a high number of casualties, many of whom were migrants.

    Under international humanitarian law attacking forces have an obligation to do everything feasible to distinguish between military and civilian targets, to verify whether their intended target is a military objective and to cancel an attack if there is doubt.  When attacking a military objective, parties to a conflict must also take all feasible precautions to minimise harm to civilians in the vicinity. 

    If civilian harm is found to have occurred, victims and their families should receive full reparation for violations of international humanitarian law. Furthermore, if investigations find that there were direct attacks on civilians and civilian objects or indiscriminate attacks striking military targets and civilians without distinction and which killed or injured civilians, they should be investigated and treated as violations of internation law and potential war crimes.

    Amnesty International’s arms experts analysed photos of the remnants of the weapons used in the attack and identified fragments of at least two 250 pound precision-guided GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs. US Central Command did not announce the target of the attack but a US defense official said they were assessing “claims” of civilian casualties in the strike, and conducting “our battle-damage assessment”. This assessment, including any conclusions related to civilian harm and efforts to respond to it, should promptly be made public.

    The US should have known Sa’ada prison was a detention facility, that has been used for years by the Huthis to detain migrants and that it was regularly visited by ICRC. They should also have known that any aerial attack could result in significant civilian harm.

     Amnesty also recalls that another detention facility within the same Sa’ada prison compound was hit by a Saudi-led coalition air strike on 21 January 2022, using a US-made precision guided munition, killing more than 90 detainees and injuring dozens. According to satellite imagery, since that strike in 2022 the Huthi de facto authorities have constructed additional buildings at that location, one of which was also struck on 28 April.

    Amnesty International was unable to conclusively identify a legitimate military target within the Sa’ada prison compound. Restrictions by the Huthi de facto authorities on independent investigations, including access to the second location struck on 28 April, limit our ability to fully investigate the attack, or to rule out the possibility that there were military objectives within the prison compound. Any attack that fails to distinguish between civilians and civilian objects on the one hand, and legitimate military targets on the other, even within the same compound, constitutes an indiscriminate attack and a violation of international humanitarian law.

     ‘Shock and horror on their faces’

    Amnesty International analysed dozens of videos and photos published by Huthi al Masira TV channel in addition to seven videos privately shared by one witness. This digital evidence showing bodies scattered in the rubble points to dozens of civilian migrant deaths and injuries in the air strike on the detention centre.

    The Huthi-run Ministry of Interior stated that, at the time of the attack, the detention facility was holding 115 African migrant detainees, of whom 68 were killed and 47 were injured.  If this number of casualties proves accurate, it would be the worst case of civilian harm in a single incident by the US military since an air strike in Mosul, Iraq in 2017.

    Amnesty International could not independently verify the death toll, nor speak to survivors or medical workers, due to the Huthis’ ongoing crackdown on civic space. Huthi officials have issued several statements and directives prohibiting people from sharing names, photos, or any information related to the US air strikes’ casualties on social media and other public platforms. Multiple people said they were afraid to speak out of fear of reprisal. In recent years, aid workers, journalists and activists have been detained by the Huthis and accused of espionage.

    Despite this, Amnesty International was able to speak, on condition of anonymity, with three individuals working with African migrant and refugee communities who said that all the migrant detainees held at this detention centre were Ethiopian, with the exception of one Eritrean.  

    One witness said he saw 25 injured migrants in the Republican hospital and nine in Al Talh General hospital in Sa’ada: “They suffered from different fractures and bruises. Some were in critical condition and two had amputated legs… The morgue in the Republican hospital was overwhelmed and there was no place left for tens of corpses that were still left outside the morgue for the second day.”

    Another witness who visited both hospitals and spoke to dozens of the injured Ethiopian migrants said:

    “They told me they were sleeping when they were hit with the first missile at around 4 a.m. in the morning (…) They said they woke up to find dismembered bodies around them. You could see the shock and horror on their faces. Some were still unable to speak because of the trauma.”

    On 27 April, a day before the attack, US Central Command announced it had struck over 800 targets in Yemen since 15 March and that they were intentionally limiting disclosing information about their operations for reasons of operational security.

    US Congress should ensure ongoing efforts to mitigate civilian harm

    Critical systems put in place in recent years building on work started under the first Trump Administration to reduce and better respond to civilian harm caused by US lethal actions abroad are under threat by the current Trump Administration. News outlets have reported that programs at the Defense Department focused on civilian harm mitigation and response are being gutted, and that the US President has rolled back constraints on commanders authorizing certain types of air strikes and special operations.  It has also been reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired the top military lawyers responsible for ensuring compliance with international humanitarian law in military operations.

    “At a time when the US appears to be shrinking efforts aimed at reducing civilian harm by US lethal actions, the US Congress should play its oversight role and demand information on investigations to date on these strikes. Congress must further ensure that civilian harm mitigation and response mechanisms remain intact and robustly respond to this and other recent incidents,” said Agnès Callamard.

     Between November 2023 and January 2025, Huthi armed forces have targeted at least 74 commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, which they claimed were linked to Israel, the USA or the UK.

    US President Joe Biden began air strikes against the Huthis in 2024. The new wave of US strikes under the Trump Administration started on 15 March 2025 after the Huthis announced on 11 March that they would resume attacks on Israeli ships passing through the Red and Arabian seas in response to Israel blocking aid into the occupied Gaza Strip.

    Since 15 March, the Huthis have launched missiles and drones at the USS Harry S. Truman, an aircraft carrier stationed in the Red Sea. They have also resumed their attacks on Israel, striking near Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport on 4 May. Israel retaliated in May with air strikes including on Hodeidah port and Sana’a airport.

    On 6 May, the US announced it was ending its military campaign against the Huthis in Yemen.

    Greetings to the pilgrims who have come for the Jubilee of Confraternities!
    I greet all of you with a heart full of gratitude at the beginning of the ministry that has been entrusted to me.  Saint Augustine wrote: Lord, “you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you” (Confessions, I: 1,1).
    In these days, we have experienced intense emotions.  The death of Pope Francis filled our hearts with sadness.  In those difficult hours, we felt like the crowds that the Gospel says were “like sheep without a shepherd” (Mt 9:36).  Then, on Easter Sunday, we received his final blessing and, in the light of the resurrection, we experienced the days that followed in the certainty that the Lord never abandons his people, but gathers them when they are scattered and guards them “as a shepherd guards his flock” (Jer 31:10).
    In this spirit of faith, the College of Cardinals met for the conclave.  Coming from different backgrounds and experiences, we placed in God’s hands our desire to elect the new Successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome, a shepherd capable of preserving the rich heritage of the Christian faith and, at the same time, looking to the future, in order to confront the questions, concerns and challenges of today’s world.  Accompanied by your prayers, we could feel the working of the Holy Spirit, who was able to bring us into harmony, like musical instruments, so that our heartstrings could vibrate in a single melody.

    We see this in today’s Gospel, which takes us to the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus began the mission he received from the Father: to be a “fisher” of humanity in order to draw it up from the waters of evil and death.  Walking along the shore, he had called Peter and the other first disciples to be, like him, “fishers of men”.  Now, after the resurrection, it is up to them to carry on this mission, to cast their nets again and again, to bring the hope of the Gospel into the “waters” of the world, to sail the seas of life so that all may experience God’s embrace.
    How can Peter carry out this task?  The Gospel tells us that it is possible only because his own life was touched by the infinite and unconditional love of God, even in the hour of his failure and denial.  For this reason, when Jesus addresses Peter, the Gospel uses the Greek verb agapáo, which refers to the love that God has for us, to the offering of himself without reserve and without calculation.  Whereas the verb used in Peter’s response describes the love of friendship that we have for one another. Consequently, when Jesus asks Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” (Jn 21:16), he is referring to the love of the Father.  It is as if Jesus said to him, “Only if you have known and experienced this love of God, which never fails, will you be able to feed my lambs.  Only in the love of God the Father will you be able to love your brothers and sisters with that same ‘more’, that is, by offering your life for your brothers and sisters.”
    Peter is thus entrusted with the task of “loving more” and giving his life for the flock.  The ministry of Peter is distinguished precisely by this self-sacrificing love, because the Church of Rome presides in charity and its true authority is the charity of Christ.  It is never a question of capturing others by force, by religious propaganda or by means of power.  Instead, it is always and only a question of loving as Jesus did.
    The Apostle Peter himself tells us that Jesus “is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, and has become the cornerstone” (Acts 4:11).  Moreover, if the rock is Christ, Peter must shepherd the flock without ever yielding to the temptation to be an autocrat, lording it over those entrusted to him (cf. 1 Pet 5:3).  On the contrary, he is called to serve the faith of his brothers and sisters, and to walk alongside them, for all of us are “living stones” (1 Pet 2:5), called through our baptism to build God’s house in fraternal communion, in the harmony of the Spirit, in the coexistence of diversity.  In the words of Saint Augustine: “The Church consists of all those who are in harmony with their brothers and sisters and who love their neighbour” (Serm. 359,9).
    Brothers and sisters, I would like that our first great desire be for a united Church, a sign of unity and communion, which becomes a leaven for a reconciled world.
    In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalises the poorest.  For our part, we want to be a small leaven of unity, communion and fraternity within the world.  We want to say to the world, with humility and joy: Look to Christ!  Come closer to him!  Welcome his word that enlightens and consoles!  Listen to his offer of love and become his one family: in the one Christ, we are one.  This is the path to follow together, among ourselves but also with our sister Christian churches, with those who follow other religious paths, with those who are searching for God, with all women and men of good will, in order to build a new world where peace reigns!
    This is the missionary spirit that must animate us; not closing ourselves off in our small groups, nor feeling superior to the world.  We are called to offer God’s love to everyone, in order to achieve that unity which does not cancel out differences but values the personal history of each person and the social and religious culture of every people.
    Brothers and sisters, this is the hour for love!  The heart of the Gospel is the love of God that makes us brothers and sisters.  With my predecessor Leo XIII, we can ask ourselves today: If this criterion “were to prevail in the world, would not every conflict cease and peace return?” (Rerum Novarum, 20).
    With the light and the strength of the Holy Spirit, let us build a Church founded on God’s love, a sign of unity, a missionary Church that opens its arms to the world, proclaims the word, allows itself to be made “restless” by history, and becomes a leaven of harmony for humanity.

    Dementia Action Week, organised by the Alzheimer’s Society and supported by the City of Wolverhampton Council and other members of Wolverhampton Dementia Action Alliance, is an opportunity to raise awareness of the help and support available to people living with dementia, and their families and carers.

    Trifork Group: Weekly report on share buyback

    On 28 February 2025, Trifork initiated a share buyback program in accordance with Regulation No. 596/2014 of the European Parliament and Council of 16 April 2014 (MAR) and Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/1052, (Safe Harbour regulation). The share buyback program runs from 4 March 2025 up to and including no later than 30 June 2025. For details, please see company announcement no. 7 of 28 February 2025.

    Under the share buyback program, Trifork will purchase shares for up to a total of DKK 14.92 million (approximately EUR 2 million). Prior to the launch of the share buyback, Trifork held 256,329 treasury shares, corresponding to 1.3% of the share capital. Under the program, the following transactions have been made:

    Since the share buyback program was started on 4 March 2025, the total number of repurchased shares is 88,874 at a total amount of DKK 7,709,372.
    On 25 March and on 25 April 2025, 2,929 shares acquired through the share buyback program were utilized for the Executive Management’s monthly fixed salary, representing a change from cash payment to payment partly in shares (refer to company announcement no. 1 of 21 January 2025). On 1 April 2025, 19,943 shares acquired through the share buyback program were utilized to serve the RSU plan of Executive Management and certain employees.

    With the transactions stated above, Trifork holds a total of 322,331 treasury shares, corresponding to 1.6%. The total number of registered shares in Trifork is 19,744,899. Adjusted for treasury shares, the number of outstanding shares is 19,422,568.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Politics, protest and some seriously inappropriate songs: who gets censored at Eurovision, and who doesn’t?

    As always, Eurovision 2025 was full of glitter, costume reveals, divas, spectacle and, of course, controversy. From ongoing calls to ban Israel from participating, to one song that had to be edited since it was too inappropriate, here’s what you may have missed from this year’s contest.

    A milkshake meltdown

    For Australian viewers, the final may have been a bit of a letdown because, for the second year in a row, our contestant failed to get past the semis.

    Go-Jo’s Milkshake Man seemed like a strong offering, with its daft and suggestive lyrics, huge energy and oversized blender prop – but some weak vocals on the night left us in the cold.

    Other wacky entries of the uniquely Eurovision variety fared better, though. Sweden’s ode to saunas, Bara Bada Bastu, started the night as the favourite to win and ended high with a fourth placing, just behind Estonia’s rubbery-legged Tommy Cash, whose love song to coffee may have just been more relatable to voters.

    Serving what?

    More controversial was Miriana Conte’s song for Malta, originally titled Serving Kant, with kant being the Maltese word for singing. But this thinly disguised attempt to celebrate “serving cunt” was deemed inappropriate by the European Broadcasting Union, and reworked as simply Serving.

    This performance is part of a long Eurovision tradition of celebrating queer culture. Each year, multiple entries use LGBTQIA+ imagery, tropes and lyrics to celebrate the theme of being who you are.

    Last year’s event marked the first time two non-binary performers were featured in the contest. One of them, Switzerlans’s Nemo, won. As a side note, Nemo’s return performance this year may be one of the best things to ever grace the Eurovision stage.

    But it seems Malta’s cheeky play on the theme didn’t pay off, as it landed them in 17th place by the end of the voting.

    Other stand-out performances included Finland’s Erika Vikman, who outperformed a whole crop of big-voiced divas in sparkly body suits by riding a giant flaming microphone to the roof of the stadium during the, ahem, climax to Ich Komme (which translates to “I’m coming”).

    Less in your face, yet strangely compelling, were the women of Latvia’s folk band Tautumeitas. In their forest-nymph-axolotl (?) costumes, they delivered a flawless and gentle performance.

    A heated, close race to the top

    The winner was, as is often the case at Eurovision, a more serious song that showcased a high level of musicianship and vocal ability. Austria’s JJ performance of Wasted Love was stripped-back compared to most of the rivals.

    JJ took to the stage alone, using a completely black and white palette that stood out against the reds that dominated the rest of the night. The way he used his body onstage, and the dynamism of his soprano voice – moving from a conventional pop vocal style to a more operatic delivery – was compellingly dramatic, and was rewarded by the juries and public voters.

    It was a close race for the top spot however. I imagine the broadcasting union breathed a sigh of relief when Austria knocked Israel into second place at the last moment.

    Israel’s presence in the contest has been a source of division and conflict since the events of October 7. For two years there have been highly publicised calls to expel Israel from the competition, in light of the extreme atrocities and human rights abuses taking place on the ground in Gaza.

    Multiple pro-Palestinian rallies took to the streets in the host city, Basel, and protesters trying to disrupt the Israeli performance found their way into the arena during the rehearsals and final. While they did not make it into the broadcast, there were reports of audience members being removed, staff being hit with paint, and violent clashes with security and police.

    Beyond this, 70 ex-competitors and, separately, more than 4,000 Nordic music workers put their names on open letters protesting Israel’s inclusion in the contest. But these attempts failed, partly because the countries involved did not threaten to withdraw themselves if Israel participated (which was how Russia was expelled from the 2022 contest, in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine).

    What can we expect moving forward

    It’s worth considering what Israel’s inclusion in the contest does allow. In recently published work, my coauthors and I consider what it means to face up to some of the uglier aspects of music and music-making – and to sit with the discomfort, rather than ignore it.

    If Israel had been excluded, those calling for its exclusion may have achieved a sense that a certain wrong had been righted, and the Eurovision party could go on, free from worry.

    Yet the realities of events in Gaza would not have disappeared. Viewers at home would simply not have to think about them.

    Israel’s inclusion – and the opposition to it – forces us to ask what role, if any, cultural institutions can play in helping put a stop to what the International Court of Justice has said can plausibly be called a genocide.

    While the broadcasting union could perhaps put pressure on Israel with a ban, the fissures of Israel’s continued inclusion have shone a spotlight on other types of pressure and resistance – and the power music has in bringing people together for the explicit purpose of being political.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Bass in the Grass 2025 wrap-up

    The NT Police Force are happy to report a very well-behaved crowd following the NT’s largest music festival, Bass in the Grass.

    Around 11,000 party goers attended on site for a fun filled evening.

    Police conducted high visibility patrols, wanding operations, drug screening and community engagement across the event.

    Of the thousands in attendance, police arrested four people and handed out two notices to appear in court for minor drug related offences.

    Operation Esperance was established to ensure public safety, with members of the Dog Operations Unit, Territory Safety Division, recruits from the Police College and general duties in attendance.

    Acting Superintendent Territory Safety Division Alexander Noonan said “It was fantastic to see positive engagement between our members and the community at this significant event.

    “We want to thank everyone who enjoyed their night safely. We look forward to seeing you all at the next local event.”
