  • MIL-OSI Russia: Finches and thrushes began singing in the capital’s natural areas

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

With the arrival of warm weather, you can hear birds singing in the natural areas of the capital. In parks, squares and even in courtyards, you can hear the ringing trills of finches, thrushes, robins, warblers and other feathered inhabitants.

Capital specialists Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection reminder: from April 1, a silence regime has been established in natural areas, which will last until July 31. It is necessary to create favorable conditions during the breeding season of animals and birds.

“When near a nest, do not make loud sounds, turn on music, make noise or approach the birds, and also do not walk dogs without a short leash and muzzle. Compliance with these simple rules allows us to maintain the stability of populations and support biodiversity in the city,” the capital’s Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection said.

    Natural cacophony

The most sonorous and varied songs at this time are those of finches and thrushes. Male finches perform melodic trills to attract females and inform rivals that the territory is already occupied. The concerts of thrushes, especially the song and black thrush, can be recognized by a series of whistling and flute-like phrases with pauses. The robin produces characteristic gentle trills, often heard at dawn and dusk and reminiscent of a quiet stream. Warblers sing simply and rhythmically – with short, repeating sounds that are easily recognizable in the silence, and warblers perform a fast and energetic song with a variety of chirping and whistling elements.

It is in the spring that birds are most vulnerable: at this time they build nests, lay eggs, hatch offspring and feed chicks. Any loud noise, the approach of a person or a pet can provoke anxiety and force the bird to leave the nest. In such cases, the chicks risk being left without parental warmth and food. Species that build nests on the ground or in low vegetation are especially sensitive to external factors, so it is important to remain quiet and not disturb the birds.

One of the important tasks of the Moscow Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection is to help wild animals that find themselves in difficult situations. Biologists remind: if you encounter injured animals or birds that need specialized medical care, you should immediately contact the Moscow Government’s unified information service by phone: 7 495 777-77-77.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Stunt creators from the Russian Stuntmen’s Guild performed at the Moskino Cinema Park

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

April 12 was Cosmonautics Day in Russia. In honor of the holiday, a creative evening dedicated to Yuri Gagarin was held in the Moskino cinema park, professional stuntmen performed, interactive performances and concerts were held, as well as fun games with tasks for children and adults.

    Creative evenings and quests

On April 12, Varvara Nikitina, vice-president of the Stuntmen’s Guild of the Russian Cinematographers’ Union, gave a lecture at the Gonzaga Theatre. She talked about the difficult work she has been doing for 30 years, revealed the secrets of filming space flights, and showed how a gimbal, a device for simulating the movement of an aircraft, works. The audience was also invited to experience the emotions of such a flight, and the stuntmen’s performances expanded the understanding of this profession.

“Such meetings are very necessary because they give the audience an opportunity to get acquainted with the cinema kitchen, learn the subtleties and secrets from professionals. Thus, the Moskino cinema park unites viewers and creators. When I came here for the first time, five natural sites were built here. I did not expect that this would be such a global and rapidly developing project. Unique sets are built here, thanks to which the filmmaking process becomes more comfortable. We filmed the film Peter I on the natural site of Moscow’s Cathedral Square, and we had very complex stunt scenes there, which we were able to implement in the cinema park. We also filmed the project Santa Claus Wanted here, and these films will soon appear on screens. In addition, a stunt festival will be held soon, in which we will be happy to participate,” Varvara Nikitina shared her impressions.

The stunt coordinator emphasized that it is very comfortable to work in the film park, and the creative process is organized at the highest level.

On April 13, the educational center hosted a creative evening dedicated to Yuri Gagarin. Yulia Kostina, head of the scientific and methodological work department of the Cosmonautics Museum, spoke about the first manned flight into space and the discoveries that were made thanks to this event.

The quest “Space Frontier” was held in the decorations of “Moscow of the 1940s”, “Prince Andrey’s Chambers”, as well as on the central square and near “Cowboy Town”. Participants practiced their knowledge of physics, caught the insidious alien Zikzakzok, and also restored the Earth’s energy system, the planet from a catastrophe.

    Performances, concerts and film screenings

On April 12 and 13, the Gonzaga Theatre showed the interactive play “Frantic Cosmists”. Young viewers and their parents saw famous space explorers on stage and also took part in fun games.

“We liked the detailing of the characters, the costumes of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Yuri Gagarin were memorable, we were surprised by how similar the faces of the great scientists and cosmonauts turned out to be. The children were happy to take pictures with the characters of the play. It’s great that the children were involved in the play, they were invited on stage and they took part in the performance. A very pleasant impression,” said spectator Artem Fedorov.

The guests noted that the costumes were made very realistically, and the performance helped them learn more about space and get to know its discoverers.

On April 13, hits from world cinema were heard from the stage. The audience heard compositions from famous Disney cartoons, Soviet films and popular musicals.

Over the weekend, the Moskino Kinopark cinema hosted screenings of films about family values, love and friendship. Guests appreciated the comedy “Batya-2. Ded” – it takes the viewer back together with the characters to childhood memories of their home and unforgettable moments that you want to return to. The audience was also touched by the funny film “Everything That Concerns You” about the search for a father and music that unites hearts. And the film “Palma-2” told the story of a lost bear cub who finds a real family and true friends.

Actors of the historical series talked about filming in the Moskino cinema parkA historical drama about the events of Ancient Rus’ in the 12th century was filmed at the Moskino cinema park

The Moskino cinema park is part of Sergei Sobyanin’s “Moscow – City of Cinema” project and an object of the Moscow cinema cluster, which is being developed capital’s Department of Culture. The first stage of development has already been completed here: 24 natural sites, four pavilions and six infrastructure facilities have been built. Among them are the sets “Center of Moscow”, “Moscow of the 1940s”, “Vitebsk Station”, “Yurovo Airport”, “Cathedral Square of Moscow”, “Deaf Village”, “County Town”, “Cowboy Town”, “St. Petersburg Bar” and others.

The Moscow Film Cluster is an infrastructure facility, services and facilities for filmmakers, which are being developed by the Moscow Government within the framework of the Moscow — City of Cinema project. Its structure includes the Moskino film park, the Gorky Film Studio (sites on Sergei Eisenstein Street and Valdaisky Proyezd), the Moskino film factory, the Moskino cinema chain, the film commission and the Moskino film platform.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Residents of 30 old houses in Kuzminki moved to modern residential complexes

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

Residents of 30 old houses in the Kuzminki district have moved into new apartments under the renovation program. This was reported by the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the capital’s Department of Urban Development Policy Vladislav Ovchinsky.

After resettlement, old houses are dismantled. New housing is built on the vacated sites under the renovation program with accompanying infrastructure.

“Resettlement under the renovation program in the Kuzminki district began in 2018, when the first residential complex on Volgogradsky Prospekt was handed over for settlement. Today, the number of such residential complexes has reached 16, with a total of 2.8 thousand apartments with finished improved finishing. Residents of 30 completely vacated houses have moved into new apartments in Kuzminki. In total, 287 houses in the district are to be resettled, and over 64 thousand Muscovites will receive new housing,” noted Vladislav Ovchinsky.

The first floors of new buildings under the renovation program are designed as non-residential. Social and domestic facilities will open there – pharmacies, private medical clinics, leisure and educational centers for children, beauty salons, pick-up points and shops.

The area around the residential buildings is being improved: comprehensive landscaping is being carried out, areas for active recreation and sports are being equipped, and CCTV cameras and street lights are being installed.

Earlier Sergei Sobyanin told on the use of prefab technologies in the construction of houses under the renovation program.

Renovation program approved in August 2017. It concerns about a million Muscovites and provides for the resettlement of 5,176 houses. Sergei Sobyanin instructed to double the pace of implementation of the renovation program.

Moscow is one of the leaders among regions in terms of construction volumes. High rates of housing construction correspond to the goals and initiatives of the national project “Infrastructure for life”.

  • MIL-OSI China: Services a major driving force behind China’s consumption growth: report

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

HAIKOU, April 15 — China’s services consumption is not only rebounding but evolving rapidly, becoming a key driver of overall consumption growth, according to a report released by the China Institute for Reform and Development.

The Hainan-based think tank published the report on Monday during this year’s China International Consumer Products Expo, the country’s only national-level exhibition focused on consumer goods, which is being held in the tropical island province.

The report forecasts that by 2030, the per capita services consumption of China’s urban and rural residents could exceed 20,000 yuan (about 2,773 U.S. dollars), accounting for more than half of total consumption. The shift toward a services-oriented consumer society is expected to drive sustainable economic growth and transform consumption patterns.

Services consumption has become a propeller of goods consumption, and a “goods-like services” trend is gaining momentum across the country, said Chi Fulin, head of the think tank.

The report shows that traditional sectors are leading the recovery. Established go-tos for fun and relaxation, such as ski holidays and blockbuster films, are back in full swing.

Winter tourism continues to gain popularity, particularly during peak travel periods. During the 2025 Spring Festival holiday, a total of 17.23 million visits were recorded across 934 ski resorts nationwide — a 10 percent increase from the previous year. For the 2024-2025 winter season, the number of people engaged in ice and snow tourism in China is estimated at 520 million.

Earlier this year, China’s film industry also made a notable comeback. The 2025 Spring Festival box office hit a record 9.51 billion yuan, with 187 million moviegoers nationwide. Daily box office sales also reached new highs during the holiday season. The animated film “Ne Zha 2” made history by becoming the first Asian film to break into the global top five and top the global animation box office.

While classic forms of services consumption like films and tourism continue to thrive, a new wave of digital experiences, led by generative artificial intelligence (AI), is rapidly reshaping China’s consumer landscape.

According to the report, generative AI is enhancing and upgrading the consumer-end user experience as it is integrated into common internet applications, including instant messaging platforms, office software, and online customer service and creative tools.

In December 2024, approximately 331 million people in China reported that they were aware of generative AI products, and about 249 million said they had used them. This surge in public engagement reflects the technology’s growing presence in everyday digital life, as well as its expanding influence on consumption patterns.

Jiang Ying, chair of Deloitte China, anticipates that China will leverage its strength in rapid technological innovation further to boost demand. “China encourages the integration of emerging technologies like AI to enhance consumer experiences and create new consumption scenarios,” she added.

In March, China made public a plan for special initiatives to increase consumption, as the world’s second-largest economy moves to make domestic demand the main engine and anchor of economic growth. The plan highlights services consumption quality enhancement.

Chi emphasized that the next five to 10 years will be a critical period for China’s economic growth. He suggested that significant investments in people should be made to transform services consumption into a major force in the economy, making consumption a critical engine of sustained economic growth.

  • MIL-OSI China: Hamas says reviewing Israel’s new ceasefire proposal

Hamas said Monday evening that it is reviewing Israel’s new Gaza ceasefire proposal delivered by Egypt and Qatar, while Palestinian sources said the prospect of achieving any tangible breakthrough is slim as differences remain between Hamas and Israel.

Egypt’s Al-Qahera News TV channel reported, quoting high-ranking Egyptian sources, that Egypt and Qatar have delivered the Israeli proposal to Hamas and are awaiting its response as soon as possible.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an informed source of Hamas told Xinhua that the proposal included a 45-day temporary ceasefire, during which Hamas would release half of the Israeli hostages it holds.

The source said the Hamas delegation, headed by senior official Khalil al-Hayya, expressed surprise at the inclusion of a clause related to the movement’s disarmament, which it categorically rejected.

“Disarmament is not on the table and will not be discussed, now or in the future,” the source said, adding that any agreement must begin with “a cessation of the Israeli aggression and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.”

According to the source, Hamas informed the mediators that it was prepared to release nine Israeli hostages in an initial phase, but only under the condition of a comprehensive halt to hostilities, a demand that Israel has not accepted.

On Sunday, the Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo at the invitation of Egyptian officials to participate in the talks.

Meanwhile, Israel’s Channel 11 reported that Israel is ready to compromise on specific issues but will not accept any agreement that undermines its war objectives.

According to the channel, an Israeli official said that Israel will not abandon its position on restricting Hamas’s military capabilities and ensuring that any truce leads toward a process of disarmament.

According to the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation Kan, Israel proposed, via mediators, the release of hostages, including American citizen Edan Alexander, in return for U.S. guarantees to proceed with the next phase of ceasefire discussions.

The Israeli proposal also includes a 45-day pause in fighting, the entry of conditional humanitarian aid, and the redeployment of Israeli forces to positions held before March 2.

Despite ongoing mediation by Egypt and Qatar, sources close to Hamas said “significant gaps” remain between the parties. Efforts by Egypt and Qatar to bridge the divide between Hamas and Israel continue, but no clear path to a truce has yet emerged, according to a source of Hamas.

In the Gaza Strip, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate amid continued military operations. Security sources in Gaza said that Israeli airstrikes targeted several areas across Gaza City, Rafah, and Khan Younis.

Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, announced that its fighters engaged in an armed clash with Israeli forces east of the Shuja’iyya neighborhood, claiming to have inflicted casualties.

While the Israeli army did not issue an official statement on the incident, Hebrew media reported that two Israeli soldiers were seriously injured and evacuated by helicopter for treatment.

However, civilians in Gaza continue to bear the brunt of the conflict. Nader Abdul Karim, a displaced resident from Gaza City now living in a UNRWA shelter in Deir al-Balah, told Xinhua, “We had hoped this round of talks would result in a truce, but our hopes are fading.”

“Every day, we fear becoming part of the rising death toll,” he lamented.

Salha Abu Rahmi, a displaced woman from Beit Hanoun, said, “The negotiations are happening far from us, and every time they fail, we face more bombing. We are the ones paying the price.”

In Khan Younis, resident Oday Abu Zeid echoed similar concerns. “If this war does not end soon, more families will be wiped out. Every failed round of talks means more suffering,” he said.

  • MIL-OSI USA: The NPR, PBS Grift Has Ripped Us Off for Too Long

    US Senate News:

    Source: The White House
For years, American taxpayers have been on the hook for subsidizing National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), which spread radical, woke propaganda disguised as “news.”
As President Trump has stated, taxpayer funding of NPR’s and PBS’s biased content is a waste.
Here are some examples of the trash that passes for “news” at NPR and PBS:
In 2024, NPR ran a Valentine’s Day feature around “queer animals,” in which it suggested the make-believe clownfish in Finding Nemo would’ve been better off as a female, that “banana slugs are hermaphrodites,” and that “some deer are nonbinary.”
In 2024, PBS produced a documentary making the case for reparations.
In 2023, PBS’s Washington Week roundtable covered up Joe Biden’s clear mental decline, with far-left “journalist” Jeff Goldberg claiming Biden is actually “quite acute.”
In 2022, NPR educated the nation on the “whole community of genderqueer dinosaur enthusiasts” and “trans-ceratops.”
In 2021, a PBS station aired a “children’s program” that featured a drag queen named “Lil’ Miss Hot Mess.”
In 2021, NPR reported on the “cousin of diet culture” known as “healthism, which is the idea that we have to be healthy” — as if that was a bad thing.
In 2021, NPR suggested doorway sizes are based on “latent fatphobia.”
In 2021, NPR lamented that “animals deserve pronouns, too.”
In 2022, NPR ran a feature titled “What ‘Queer Ducks’ can teach teenagers about sexuality in the animal kingdom.”
In 2020, PBS show Sesame Street partnered with CNN for a town hall aimed presenting children with a one-sided narrative to “address racism” amid the Black Lives Matter riots.
In 2020, NPR explored “the racial origins of fat phobia.”
In 2017, NPR ran a story titled “Cannibalism: It’s ‘Perfectly Natural,’” in which an author describes eating another human’s placenta: “It was really the prep that made it taste good. Granted, the [husband] was a chef and so he knew how to prepare it osso bucco style and used a really nice wine I had brought. It smelled great. It didn’t taste bad.”
In 2017, PBS aired a panel devoted to what it “mean[s] to be woke” and “white privilege.”
In 2017, PBS produced an entire movie celebrating a transgender teenager’s so-called “changing gender identity.”
In 2015, NPR dedicated an entire segment to the “population of anthropomorphic animal enthusiasts known as ‘furries.’”
NPR and PBS have zero tolerance for non-leftist viewpoints:
In 2020, NPR refused to cover the explosive Hunter Biden laptop scandal in the runup to the election, baselessly claiming there were “many, many red flags” and its “assertions don’t amount to much.”
NPR wrote: “We don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste the listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions.”

When a 25-year veteran NPR reporter and editor spoke out about the network’s refusal to report on the Hunter Biden laptop — and their obsession with liberal causes — they suspended him.
The editor found that registered Democrats outnumbered Republicans 87 to zero in their newsroom.
NPR prolifically reported on the Russian collusion hoax, with the editor describing “[Adam] Schiff talking points” as “the drumbeat of NPR news reports.”
NPR management asked its editors to avoid the term “biological sex” when discussing transgender issues.

NPR CEO Katherine Maher once called President Trump “racist,” shared a photo of herself wearing a “Biden for President” campaign hat, serves on the board of a Soros-funded activist group, and described the “reverence for the truth” as a “distraction.”
In 2023, a study found that congressional Republicans saw 85% negative coverage while congressional Democrats saw 54% positive coverage on PBS’s flagship news program.
According to a 2024 study, PBS news staff used 162 variations of the term “far-right,” but only six variations of “far-left.”
Media bias rating agency AllBias — which surveyed nearly 24,000 readers — found NPR’s bias aligns with “liberal, progressive or left-wing thought and/or policy agendas.”
In 2010, NPR terminated journalist Juan Williams, who said it was because he was not a “predictable, black liberal.”
NPR repeatedly dismissed the theory that COVID-19 originated in a lab — a conclusion now deemed likely by the FBI, CIA, and Department of Energy.
April 2020: “Scientists Debunk Lab Accident Theory Of Pandemic Emergence”
May 2020: “As Trump Pushes Theory Of Virus Origins, Some See Parallels In Lead-Up To Iraq War”
May 2021: “Many Scientists Still Think The Coronavirus Came From Nature”
March 2023: “Virologist says COVID origin report could make it harder to study dangerous diseases”
September 2024: “New research points to raccoon dogs in Wuhan market as pandemic trigger. It’s controversial”

A 2024 Media Research Center study found that PBS’s coverage of the Republican National Convention was 72% negative, while coverage of the Democratic National Convention was 88% positive.

  • MIL-OSI China: Octogenarian saves disappearing Mongolian folk songs

Source: China State Council Information Office 3

Devoting more than six decades to the preservation and study of the music of the Mongolian ethnic group in China, Wu Lanjie, an 87-year-old Chinese musicologist and educator, has made significant contributions to the inheritance and development of the music, with his important monographs forming a theoretical framework for Mongolian music history.

Born into a family of folk song artists on the Horqin Grassland in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Wu was immersed in Mongolian folk songs from an early age and developed a deep passion for music, which later evolved into a lifelong pursuit.

As Wu described it, he has spent nearly his entire life creating an extensive “coordinate system” for Mongolian music, with the horizontal axis representing the timeline of its development from ancient times to the present, and the vertical axis categorizing the various forms of the music—such as folk songs, instrumental music, and epics—thus forming a comprehensive theoretical framework.

In particular, his landmark work, a book titled “A History of Mongolian Music,” serves as an academic compass tracing the vibrant evolution of Mongolian music, advancing the theorization and systematization of the music.

The work was a result of more than 30 years of painstaking efforts starting from 1959, when he was studying at the musicology department of China’s Central Conservatory of Music.

“After studying the history of music from different parts of the world, I couldn’t help but wonder—Mongolian ethnic music is so rich and diverse, how could it not have a history of its own?” Wu recalled, noting that a simple yet powerful idea took root in his mind at the time: to write a book on the history of Mongolian ethnic music.

In the decades that followed, Wu embarked on a monumental project to collect, analyze, and categorize Mongolian ethnic music.

“In the past, most studies of Mongolian ethnic music remained at the level of general overviews, lacking theoretical depth, systematic structure, and professional rigor,” Wu said.

“In such circumstances, no matter how abundant the musical works are, musical creation and music education cannot develop in a systematic way. Only by elevating musical practices of the Mongolian people to the level of music theory and history can we lay a solid foundation for their inheritance and development,” he explained.

In an effort to compile a comprehensive history of Mongolian ethnic music, Wu nearly exhausted every available source he could find. He combed through a vast range of materials—from ancient Mongolian-language texts and classical Chinese literature, such as the treatise on ritual and music in the “Book of Han”, to collections of works by literary figures and scholars from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties.

He also consulted foreign works, including “The Travels of Marco Polo”, and explored archaeological findings in search of historical references to Mongolian ethnic music.

Realizing that he couldn’t rely solely on books, Wu also took to the grasslands to conduct field research. During the summers of 1963 and 1964, he traveled from village to village, consulting with local folk singers and documenting what he heard.

The journeys were long and often dangerous—he once encountered wolves, and on another occasion nearly drowned while crossing a river. Instinctively, he held his backpack full of folk song transcriptions above his head, which caught the attention of a passerby who came to his rescue.

Through his fieldwork, Wu collected and preserved over 300 folk songs, including more than 90 long-tune songs (Urtyn duu), which are praised as a “living fossil” of Mongolian music.

“At that time, many people thought that the long-tune folk songs from the Horqin Grassland were on the verge of disappearing, with only about a dozen surviving. However, I managed to collect over 90 of them,” Wu recalled.

Based on his rescue efforts that contributed to the preservation of the long-tune folk songs from the Horqin Grassland, Wu published a book on the traditional form of folk music.

Wu’s extensive fieldwork laid a solid foundation for his scholarship. After more than 30 years of research and documentation, he began writing “A History of Mongolian Music” in 1993. The book was published five years later, earning widespread acclaim and being included in the inaugural Yang Yinliu nomination for academic achievements in music by the Chinese National Academy of Arts. The nomination represents one of the most prestigious honors for musicians in China.

Yet he didn’t stop there. A revised edition came out in 2019, enriched with new findings, updated theories and historical data, as well as contemporary developments.

A photo of Wu Lanjie, an 87-year-old Chinese musicologist and educator, in his earlier years. [Photo courtesy of the interviewee]

Today, he remains deeply engaged in the preservation and development of ancient folk songs. As a researcher at Minzu University of China and a special doctoral supervisor at the China Conservatory of Music, he continues to mentor young scholars and advocate for the fusion of tradition and innovation.

Hanggai, a band with ethnic Mongolian musicians, has successfully blended traditional Mongolian music with modern elements, attracting more modern audiences to Mongolian folk songs, Wu said, noting that this kind of revival is what he hopes for.

Despite health challenges and a worn-out knee from years of travel, Wu still works with untiring vigor. He is busy with mentoring students, promoting music, and conducting academic research.

“There’s still a lot I haven’t finished,” he said. “I have a ‘510 writing plan’—the materials I’ve collected from fieldwork could still form the basis for five theoretical monographs; the folklore and historical stories I’ve accumulated over the years could fill 10 more books. I am determined to finish writing all these and leave more research materials for the younger generation.”

  • MIL-OSI China: Chinese, Senegalese drummers converse in harmonic rhythm

With synchronized movements and dazzling technique, percussionists from China and Senegal breathed life into diverse drum pieces during a cross-cultural performance titled “Drums and Music in Harmony” in Dakar, the capital of Senegal.

The show, held at the Grand National Theater Doudou Ndiaye Coumba Rose on Thursday evening, attracted nearly 1,000 spectators, eager to witness the captivating collaboration between Chinese and Senegalese artists.

“This is more than a musical performance. It’s a spiritual exchange,” said Yin Fei, associate professor from China’s Central Conservatory of Music.

He led a nine-member percussion group on a cultural visit to Senegal, where they engaged in face-to-face collaboration with the renowned Doudou Ndiaye Rose Percussion Ensemble.

From Chinese lion dance drumming to Senegalese sabar drumming, the two ensembles, each with its distinct style, found common ground in both rhythm and spirit, showcasing the universality of percussion as a shared cultural language.

Opening the performance, the Doudou Ndiaye Rose Percussion Ensemble delivered a powerful display of sabar drumming. Dressed in traditional Senegalese attire, the performers moved in sync with their rhythms, weaving stories of Senegalese heritage and community through sound and motion.

They were followed by the Central Conservatory of Music Percussion Ensemble, which presented a series of Chinese percussion pieces steeped in national character, evoking the profound cultural legacy of Chinese civilization through layered, resonant rhythms.

Idrissa Faye, a resident of Dakar, watched the performance with his four-year-old daughter. “A few days ago, I passed by the theater and saw a huge poster for this event. I had never seen a Chinese performance before, so I came early with my daughter today,” Faye said.

“The show was so amazing. I could really feel the grandeur and power of Chinese art,” he said.

Yin introduced the audience to the long and rich history of Chinese percussion. “In traditional Chinese culture, drums often symbolize authority, sanctity, unity, and strength. In ancient times, the beat of drums marked the emperor’s processions, the departure of armies, and temple ceremonies.”

“Today, drum music remains a vibrant part of Chinese festivals such as Spring Festival, temple fairs, and harvest celebrations, often used to convey blessings and festive joy,” he added.

Sabar drumming, a symbol of African percussion culture, is a dialogue between drummers and dancers. The drummer shifts rhythms based on the dancer’s movements, while the dancer responds dynamically to the beat. This vibrant interplay is known as the “conversation of the drums.”

For Mustapha Ndiaye, head of the Doudou Ndiaye Rose Ensemble, Thursday’s performance also profoundly pulled at his heartstrings.

It served as a tribute to his late father, Doudou Ndiaye Rose, who brought traditional Wolof sabar drumming, once confined to weddings and festivals, to the global stage. The grand theater itself is named in the legendary drummer’s honor.

“This exchange is a great opportunity to spark new artistic inspiration. We share so many similar stories. The drum is more than an instrument. It’s a vessel of culture and spirit,” said Ndiaye. “One day, I hope to bring Senegalese drumming culture to China.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Vigil for Victims of Dominican Republic Nightclub

Source: US State of New York

arlier today, Governor Hochul delivered remarks at the vigil for victims of the Dominican Republic nightclub tragedy.

VIDEO: The event is available to stream on YouTube here and TV quality video is available here (h.264, mp4).

AUDIO: The Governor’s remarks are available in audio form here.

PHOTOS: The Governor’s Flickr page has photos of the event here.

A rush transcript of the Governor’s remarks is available below:

Buenas noches. They say that grief is the price you pay for love. What does that mean? You feel this overwhelming sense of loss, grief because you invested so much of your own emotions into another person. And for so many of our family here and in the beautiful country of Dominican Republic, that pain is so raw because grief is the price you pay for love.

And tonight we gather in a sense of love, knowing the grief that our family members are feeling. We want to send that love from New York, from the Bronx, all the way to those families and say, we understand we’re here in solidarity with every one of you. And if we could lift up a little bit of your pain and your sorrow just for a few moments, we want you to know we are together in this.

I want to thank our Borough President, an extraordinary leader who I’ve seen literally tested by fire. In her first days on the job when there was a horrific fire in an apartment building here, I saw the face of courage in this young woman who stood up, and I was so proud to be joining her as well in that. But even as this other night, we think about the sorrows so many people are feeling.

The first Dominican member of Congress, my great friend Adriano Espaillat. I want to thank him for being such a strong champion of this community. We have spoken a number of times on the phone over this and what we can do to lift up the members of this community in this time of grief.

And all the other electeds who are here. I want you to look around tonight as the sky darkens. You’ll see our landmarks from our bridges to our buildings all the way up to Niagara Falls will be lit tonight to show our love for the Dominican Republic. They’ll be lit in blue, white, and red. And our flags I’ve directed to be made to be lowered at half mask. Why? As a symbol of respect to say that your pain is our pain.

And you think about the ordinary people, you talked about the celebrities, the well-known individuals called out by our Bronx President, but also the, the moms and dads, the brothers and sisters, the children, the parents, the aunts and uncles – ordinary people just got together to have some fun to enjoy life. Maybe take them out of their existence. Maybe work is hard and things are expensive. It’s hard to get a get by anymore, and they came together just to be lifted out of their existence for a nice evening.

And that is the heartbreak of this particular tragedy, that in that moment of joy, in a flash, in an instant – it became a moment of tragedy. So I say this, we must always be reminded in these sad times of the fragility of life and how precious it is. And if you have children or people in your home when you wake up in the morning, you must give them a hug. You must kiss them. You must be reminded that you may not always see them at the end of the day. And I think about those individuals who maybe said goodbye to someone not knowing it’ll be their last time.

But also, we never forget the first responders and their loved ones here across New York and in places like the Dominican Republic where they show up no matter how bad it is out there, and their family members know that with that fear in their hearts, but that sense of pride that they’re married to someone or the child of someone who will put on a uniform and run into the flames and into the danger when everybody else is running out. We’ve seen it here in this city and now we’ve seen it in a particular nightclub in Santo Domingo.

New York is so proud to be the home of over 1 million Dominicans – 1 million. Anyone here, Dominican? I knew I was in the right place. And I’ve marched in your parades, and I called the President yesterday and expressed our love and our solidarity, our counsel Jenna, we work together. There is such an affinity, a tightness, a closeness. It is a sense of familia and I’m so proud to govern a state that is so diverse and so welcoming and so embracing of other people and their ideas and cultures and yes, amazing dances like the meringue. Don’t ask me to do it. At the next parade, I ask you, please do not ask. Adriano always says he is going to teach me.

But the ties between our countries, the country, and our state are unshakeable. And I do believe as a result of this tragedy, they’re even stronger. So for all of our clergy here, I ask you to continue consoling this community, we draw on your strength and the teachings of Jesus Christ, who offers comfort as we approach this Easter weekend, at a time of sorrow, but also of deliverance and resurrection. We will be resurrected from our pain that we’re feeling today. I know it because that is the promise that God gives us.

But until that time, know that we feel the love for each and every one of you, and especially those who’ve lost a loved one in that tragedy. But I am there for you and so proud. So proud to be here, to see the love in this moment. It inspires me to go back as I’m heading back up to our State Capitol to do the work of the people, but I leave all of you with a sense that you are here because you care and because you love, and that’s why tonight you are in grief.

    Thank you very much.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: One-way Traffic

    Source: ACT Party

    The Haps

St Francis of Assisi recommended having the serenity to accept what you can’t change, the courage to change what you can, and the wisdom to know the difference. He’d probably be quite useful for dealing with the Trump Tariff situation.

The Government of New Zealand cannot change the events unfolding overseas, but there are still useful things it can do. When you can’t change trade policy, the best trade policy is good domestic policy.

Regardless of trade conditions, the New Zealand Government can choose better domestic policies. It is (mostly) getting value from taxpayer funded services, regulating lightly, and managing the assets it owns. That’s where the emphasis should be as the May 22 Budget approaches.

    One-way Traffic

Never has Parliament seen such a one-sided debate as the two hours it set aside for the second reading of the Treaty Principles Bill. A dozen MPs spoke against the Bill, but not one referred to the principles set out in the Bill. They certainly didn’t explain why they were opposed to the principles.

We saw the vote in Parliament, so we know the Bill was defeated in one sense, but in another sense it succeded. No idea can survive being displaced by a better ideal. The filtering of ideas is how open societies advance. On the other hand, no idea has ever been defeated by emotion and abuse alone. Only light can drive out darkness.

So long as an idea remains the best available argument, its time in the sun will come back around. Let’s put it another way, if there were better ideas than those put in the Bill, why didn’t opponents say what they were, at some point during a two hour debate?

Take Willie Jackson, who got booted from Parliament for calling David Seymour a liar, again. What’s interesting is this: Free Press knows Jackson had a chance to debate Seymour on TV3, but turned it down multiple times. For some reason we’re reminded of Ronald Reagan’s comment on the American flag: These colors don’t run.

Jackson didn’t just run in the media, though, he ran in the House as well. Parliament sat for over 100 days over the 14 months David Seymour was the Associate Minister of Justice responsible for the Treaty Principles Bill. Jackson could have asked Seymour questions hundreds of times but he only asked one question on the Bill. The question is captured in the YouTube video, viewed 80,000 times. The video shows why Jackson didn’t come back for more.

For all his talk, Jackson ran like diarrhoea when challenged to serious debate. Perhaps it’s not his fault, though. Perhaps nobody could give him good arguments. After all, if someone so passionately opposed to the Bill did have a good argument, they’d use it, wouldn’t they?

Not one MP in the debate got up and said ‘The Bill says x. I disagree with x. My reason is y. I think we’d have a better country if…z. None of them got to x. Nobody (except David Seymour) quoted the Bill. Even media commentators accepted David Seymour’s point that the opponents were not engaging with the Bill.

When the hysteria and personal attacks die down, people will be left to answer the simple question: what was wrong with the Treaty Principles Bill? Nobody has given an answer that engages with the contents of the Bill. That’s why we believe the Principles below will be the law of New Zealand sooner or later, it’s just a matter of time.

If you’re one of those people who’ve quietly (or not so quietly) supported David Seymour and ACT advancing the Principles below, thank you. We predict that, between now and the next election, ACT will lay out a new approach to making these undefeated principles part of our way of life. Until then we are grateful for your support.

Principle 1 The Executive Government of New Zealand has full power to govern, and the Parliament of New Zealand has full power to make laws,— (a) in the best interests of everyone; and (b) in accordance with the rule of law and the maintenance of a free and democratic society.

Principle 2 (1) The Crown recognises, and will respect and protect, the rights that hapū and iwi Māori had under the Treaty of Waitangi/te Tiriti o Waitangi at the time they signed it. (2) However, if those rights differ from the rights of everyone, subclause (1) applies only if those rights are agreed in the settlement of a historical treaty claim under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975

Principle 3 (1) Everyone is equal before the law. (2) Everyone is entitled, without discrimination, to— (a) the equal protection and equal benefit of the law; and (b) the equal enjoyment of the same fundamental human rights.

  • MIL-Evening Report: New study finds no evidence technology causes ‘digital dementia’ in older people

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Nikki-Anne Wilson, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), UNSW Sydney

    RDNE Stock project/Pexels

In the 21st century, digital technology has changed many aspects of our lives. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is the latest newcomer, with chatbots and other AI tools changing how we learn and creating considerable philosophical and legal challenges regarding what it means to “outsource thinking”.

But the emergence of technology that changes the way we live is not a new issue. The change from analogue to digital technology began around the 1960s and this “digital revolution” is what brought us the internet. An entire generation of people who lived and worked through this evolution are now entering their early 80s.

So what can we learn from them about the impact of technology on the ageing brain? A comprehensive new study from researchers at the University of Texas and Baylor University in the United States provides important answers.

Manfred Spitzer first introduced the ‘digital dementia’ hypothesis in 2012.
    Marc Reichwein/Wikipedia

Published today in Nature Human Behaviour, it found no supporting evidence for the “digital dementia” hypothesis. In fact, it found the use of computers, smartphones and the internet among people over 50 might actually be associated with lower rates of cognitive decline.

    What is ‘digital dementia’?

Much has been written about the potential negative impact from technology on the human brain.

According to the “digital dementia” hypothesis introduced by German neuroscientist and psychiatrist Manfred Spitzer in 2012, increased use of digital devices has resulted in an over-reliance on technology. In turn, this has weakened our overall cognitive ability.

Three areas of concern regarding the use of technology have previously been noted:

    1. An increase in passive screen time. This refers to technology use which does not require significant thought or participation, such as watching TV or scrolling social media.

    2. Offloading cognitive abilities to technology, such as no longer memorising phone numbers because they are kept in our contact list.

    3. Increased susceptibility to distraction.

Why is this new study important?

We know technology can impact how our brain develops. But the effect of technology on how our brain ages is less understood.

This new study by neuropsychologists Jared Benge and Michael Scullin is important because it examines the impact of technology on older people who have experienced significant changes in the way they use technology across their life.

The new study performed what is known as a meta-analysis where the results of many previous studies are combined. The authors searched for studies examining technology use in people aged over 50 and examined the association with cognitive decline or dementia. They found 57 studies which included data from more than 411,000 adults. The included studies measured cognitive decline based on lower performance on cognitive tests or a diagnosis of dementia.

The study found that technology use had a similarly positive effect on brain function as physical activity.
    l i g h t p o e t/shutterstock

A reduced risk of cognitive decline

Overall, the study found greater use of technology was associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline. Statistical tests were used to determine the “odds” of having cognitive decline based on exposure to technology. An odds ratio under 1 indicates a reduced risk from exposure and the combined odds ratio in this study was 0.42. This means higher use of technology was associated with a 58% risk reduction for cognitive decline.

This benefit was found even when the effect of other things known to contribute to cognitive decline, such as socioeconomic status and other health factors, were accounted for.

Interestingly, the magnitude of the effect of technology use on brain function found in this study was similar or stronger than other known protective factors, such as physical activity (approximately a 35% risk reduction), or maintaining a healthy blood pressure (approximately a 13% risk reduction).

However, it is important to understand that there are far more studies conducted over many years examining the benefits of managing blood pressure and increasing physical activty, and the mechanisms through which they help protect our brains are far more understood.

It is also a lot easier to measure blood pressure than it is use of technology. A strength of this study is that it considered these difficulties by focusing on certain aspects of technology use but excluded others such as brain training games.

These findings are encouraging. But we still can’t say technology use causes better cognitive function. More research is needed to see if these findings are replicated in different groups of people (especially those from low and middle income countries) who were underrepresented in this study, and to understand why this relationship might occur.

A question of ‘how’ we use technology

In reality, it’s simply not feasible to live in the world today without using some form of technology. Everything from paying bills to booking our next holiday is now almost completely done online. Maybe we should instead be thinking about how we use technology.

Cognitively stimulating activities such as reading, learning a new language and playing music – particularly in early adulthood – can help protect our brains as we age.

Greater engagement with technology across our lifespan may be a form of stimulating our memory and thinking, as we adapt to new software updates or learn how to use a new smartphone. It has been suggested this “technological reserve” may be good for our brains.

Technology may also help us to stay socially connected, and help us stay independent for longer.

Depending on how it’s used, technology can be highly stimulating for our brain.

    A rapidly changing digital world

While findings from this study show it’s unlikely all digital technology is bad for us, the way we interact and rely on it is rapidly changing

The impact of AI on the ageing brain will only become evident in future decades. However, our ability to adapt to historical technological innovations, and the potential for this to support cognitive function, suggests the future may not be all bad.

For example, advances in brain-computer interfaces offer new hope for those experiencing the impact of neurological disease or disability.

However, the potential downsides of technology are real, particularly for younger people, including poor mental health. Future research will help determine how we can capture the benefits of technology while limiting the potential for harm.

  • MIL-OSI: Music Licensing, Inc. (OTC: SONG) and Pro Music Rights, Inc. Call for Major Reform in U.S. Music Licensing Industry in Formal Response to Copyright Office Inquiry

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

Naples, FL, April 14, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Music Licensing, Inc. (OTC: SONG) and its wholly owned subsidiary Pro Music Rights, Inc. (PMR) have submitted a detailed and forceful response to the U.S. Copyright Office’s Notice of Inquiry (Docket No. 2025–1), shining a spotlight on longstanding anti-competitive behavior by legacy Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) such as BMI and ASCAP, while offering a bold and transparent alternative through PMR’s equitable licensing model.

Challenging the Status Quo: PMR’s submission criticizes legacy PROs for opaque revenue distributions, excessive payouts to private equity owners, and international licensing strong-arming via the global collective CISAC network. According to the filing, BMI—once a nonprofit—has covertly transformed into a for-profit entity, now diverting up to 20% of its royalties to private equity firms and an additional 30% through backdoor reciprocal agreements. These structures disproportionately benefit elite artists at the expense of the creative majority.

“One License Fits All”: A Transparent, Scalable Model Pro Music Rights offers a radically simplified licensing model featuring a flat $50.00 per month base fee per location and a usage-based fee capped at $0.01—only charged based on the fractional share of the musical composition PMR represents. This approach ensures small businesses and multinational corporations alike receive the same fair and scalable licensing access.

“PMR believes in equality, transparency, and technological innovation,” said Jake P. Noch, Founder & CEO of Music Licensing, Inc. and Pro Music Rights. “Every user should pay only for what they use, and every creator should be paid for what’s actually performed—without hidden fees, preferential payouts, or monopolistic barriers.”

    Key Highlights from the Filing:

    • Transparent Accounting: No hidden carve-outs, no private equity kickbacks, and real-time royalty tracking for rights holders.
    • Global Monopoly Concerns: BMI and ASCAP are accused of manipulating CISAC to blacklist competing PROs and CMOs that refuse to adopt their restrictive terms.
    • Regulatory Failures: The filing argues that existing antitrust consent decrees are outdated and calls for DOJ and FTC action to restore market fairness.
    • Historical Irony: Despite publicly disparaging PMR, BMI’s board previously engaged in confidential acquisition talks with Music Licensing, Inc., acknowledging PMR’s innovative value proposition.

A Call for Legislative and Regulatory Reform Music Licensing, Inc. and PMR are urging the Copyright Office to enact reforms that mandate financial transparency for all PROs, prohibit global blacklisting practices, and encourage equitable, standardized licensing frameworks. PMR’s tech-forward, fair-access model demonstrates what the future of music rights management can look like when creators and users are both placed first.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Breaking copyright law can help EDM DJs get more gigs, but there’s a catch

Source: The Conversation – Canada – By Amandine Ody-Brasier, Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, McGill University

DJs who release illegal remixes improve their chances of getting hired for live gigs, but only when their actions are seen as selfless. (Shutterstock)

In most industries, breaking the law can end a career. But in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene, certain forms of lawbreaking can have the opposite effect.

Our recent study found that DJs who release illegal remixes — also called bootlegs — can improve their chances of getting hired for live gigs, but only when their actions are seen as serving the broader community rather than as a self-serving tactic.

Most EDM artists support and respect copyright law and know that sharing a remix online without the permission of the copyright owner is illegal. They also recognize the importance of respecting others’ work, as illustrated by the public apology issued by Dutch DJ Hardwell in a recent feud with Swedish House Mafia over a trio of bootlegs.

Yet in practice, bootlegs are not necessarily condemned, and in some cases, can even be supported by the community.

Not all bootlegs are the same

We studied the careers of nearly 39,000 DJs across 97 countries from 2007 to 2016, tracking their music production activity and live performances. Given the legal and reputational risks involved, illegal remixing is relatively uncommon. Our data suggest that fewer than 10 per cent of EDM DJs post bootlegs online.

Still, we found that those who do post bootlegs tend to get more gigs than those who produce legal remixes or original tracks.

Bootlegging refers to the unauthorized remixing, editing or distribution of a track without the official permission of the original artist or copyright holder.
    (Shutterstock)

To better understand this surprising result, we complemented our secondary data analyses with an expert survey, an online experiment with almost 900 EDM fans and interviews with 34 industry professionals including DJs, promoters and label managers.

Interestingly, we found that bootlegs weren’t generally seen as more creative, higher quality or attention-grabbing than legal remixes or original tracks. So why then did some DJs benefit from them?

The answer lies in how the broader EDM community perceived the bootlegger’s intentions.

    Valuing disinterestedness

We found that artists who were seen as disinterested — breaking the law to give back to the community — tended to be rewarded, despite violating copyright law.

When bootlegs were perceived as homages to a peer, a gift to fans or a way to revive a beloved song, it triggered community support for the artist. Specifically, other community members would step in and provide that artist with more opportunities to perform and open for peers.

Sharing a bootleg online increased the number of monthly opening acts a DJ played by 4.4 per cent — twice the impact of releasing official remixes or original music.

This could explain seemingly surprising responses to bootlegs, like in 2019, when a young DJ named Imanbek Zeikenov remixed “Roses” by Saint Jhn and shared it online without obtaining the proper rights.

The EDM community reacted positively to the remix, which helped propel Zeikenov’s career forward. He has since become an established artist and has opened for high-profile artists, including Saint Jhn himself.

It’s clear the EDM community places a lot of value on disinterestedness. But the inverse is also true: when bootlegs were believed to be self-serving attempts to ride someone else’s success, the support quickly waned.

In fact, bootleggers perceived as self-serving experienced a decrease of up to 10 per cent in the number of monthly bookings.

Norms take precedence over formal regulations

Many occupational communities rely on informal norms. Usually, the degree to which formal regulations align with an industry’s core values determines whether a community promotes, discourages or only superficially supports compliance with the law.

However, in more ambiguous situations, compliance becomes discretionary, meaning community members must interpret unlawful actions themselves and decide whether to enforce or overlook them.

While formal rules exist in EDM — like copyright law — they’re not always strictly enforced. When this happens, a community’s norms fill in the gap in a process known as “occupational self-regulation.” In the EDM scene, these informal norms include unspoken rules about remixing, collaboration and credit.

As our study shows, this ambiguity has resulted in a system where EDM artists who break copyright laws can still gain informal support, provided their actions are seen as disinterested and beneficial to the broader community.

Breaking the rules for the right reasons

It’s important to note that EDM artists do not encourage lawbreaking per se, and that the DJs we interviewed described bootlegging as a practice born out of necessity — something artists resort to when they lack the resources to clear tracks.

Community support in EDM hinges less on strict legal compliance and more on how an artist’s intent is perceived. For emerging DJs, this creates a delicate balancing act: breaking the law carries real risks, but under certain circumstances, it can paradoxically open a path to a legitimate career.

EDM isn’t the only field where this kind of phenomenon occurs. It’s likely that other creative occupations that value disinterestedness will see similar dynamics play out. This is also true in academia or tech. For example, patent infringement in bioscience research may be treated differently, at least in part, because of perceived differences in scientists’ intentions.

Ultimately, how these transgressions are judged comes down to their perceived motives and how the broader community makes sense of them. Sometimes, breaking the law isn’t just tolerated, but can even be a stepping stone to professional success.

The authors do not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and have disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

  • MIL-OSI: 31st annual Enserva STARS & Spurs Gala raises more than $1.7 million for STARS

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

CALGARY, Alberta, April 14, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Enserva STARS & Spurs Gala (The Gala) celebrated another successful event this past Saturday, raising a total of $1,708,872 for Shock Trauma Air Rescue Support (STARS). This highly anticipated event brought together industry leaders, community supporters and distinguished guests to raise crucial funds for STARS, ensuring life-saving emergency medical services remain available across Western Canada.

As Alberta’s longest running and largest fundraiser, The Gala has raised nearly $24 million since its inception in 1994. This impressive amount reinforces the energy industry’s dedication to safety and community support, especially as The Gala serves as STAR’s most significant annual fundraising event. This is a testament to the generosity and commitment of Enserva’s members and partners.

“Enserva is so proud to bring together thousands from across the energy industry to raise funds for STARS,” says Enserva president and CEO, Gurpreet Lail. “This event and the outpouring of support that it receives each and every year is a true testament to the dedication of our industry in supporting the life-saving work that STARS provides across Western Canada. With over 60,000 missions completed by STARS since 1985, their impact on our communities is vital.”

STARS is a non-profit organization that provides rapid and specialized emergency medical care and transportation for critically ill and injured patients across Western Canada. STARS believes that no one should go without the critical care that could save their life, no matter where they live, work or play.

This year’s event featured a welcome reception, dinner, speeches from a STARS Very Important Patient (VIP), an Indigenous fashion show showcasing auction items created by Indigenous artists, as well as live entertainment from breakout country artist Garrett Gregory, Mocking Shadows and DJ ChargedUp. The Gala gathered guests from corporate executives and government officials to valued members of the energy service, supply, and manufacturing industries.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: What parents need to know about online misogyny

    Source: Anglia Ruskin University

By Annabel Hoare, Anglia Ruskin University

The success of Netflix drama Adolescence, along with concerns about misogynistic influencers such as Andrew Tate, has brought the “manosphere” into public discussion.

Many parents, particularly of young boys, may fear they don’t know enough about what their children are exposed to online. I research radical misogyny online, and the pathways by which young people encounter these spaces. Here is what parents should know about this content.

    What is the manosphere?

The manosphere is a network of communities that create, consume and distribute content online aimed at men and boys. It includes multiple groups that differ in their aims and focus, but are all largely anti-feminist.

These groups discuss masculinity, but also topics such as health, gaming, politics and finance. They trivialise hateful rhetoric through memes, comedy and trolling (provocation or bullying for amusement) by framing it as self-help, entertainment and tools for financial success. This can make it difficult for parents to identify and for children to realise the extreme messages they are being exposed to.

Manosphere content is promoted by various influencers on popular social media platforms. These influencers often showcase unattainable wealth and status, selling the illusion that followers can achieve success by adopting their teachings.

The most notable manosphere influencer is Andrew Tate, who rose to fame in 2022. He and his brother Tristan are currently under investigation in Romania for charges of rape, human trafficking and money laundering, and in the UK for rape and human trafficking. However, he is not the only influencer out there.

In recent years, there have been a number of incidents of violence that have been linked to manosphere content. The extent of real-world effects is difficult to measure, and not everyone who engages with the manosphere will go on to commit violence. But it’s clear that these communities can promote violence or spread harmful ideas about women and girls.

It is important to note, however, that this content also harms men and young boys. The manosphere promotes unrealistic expectations and extreme measures which can lead to poor self-esteem, mental health problems and, in some cases, suicide. This content preys on vulnerabilities and insecurities of boys and young men, especially related to social isolation and sexual rejection.

    Misinformation and pseudoscience

Much of the content that spreads in the manosphere is based on disinformation or pseudoscientific theories. These provide an easy framework for men to assess and improve their status while framing women and feminism as the problem.

For example, the “80/20 rule” refers to the pseudoscientific theory that 80% of women are only attracted to the top 20% of men. In the manosphere, this rule is used to blame women for mens’ feelings of sexual or romantic rejection.

Influencers and community members promote step-by-step instructions that people can follow to improve their social standing. Many of these guides involve extreme or harmful physical transformations in a phenomenon known as “looksmaxxing”, which can even involve facial surgery in a bid to increase their sexual “value”.

The manosphere has an expansive lexicon which is used to incite hatred towards women and fuel rivalry between men. Common terms include:

    • Red pill: TRP, the manosphere’s core philosophy, derived from the Matrix, frames the red pill as an awakening to feminism’s oppression of men. The blue pill represents ignorance, and the black pill, used by incels, as accepting their “terminal” celibacy status.

    • Amog (alpha male of the group), Alpha, Gamma, Omega, Sigma, Sub-5 – These terms categorise and compare men and their social status. While sigma and alpha males or Amogs are considered the top of the hierarchy, the terms gamma, omega, and sub-5 denigrate men perceived to be of a lower status.

    • White Knight, Soyboy: Derogatory terms describe men who are viewed as being subservient to women.

    • Awalt (All women are like that), Foid/Femoid (female humanoid), Becky, Carousel: Terms used to denigrate and dehumanise women.

Parents should not panic if they hear their children using manosphere terms. They may not fully understand their meanings and may have encountered them innocently. However, changes in how boys talk about women and girls, withdrawal from family and friends, and frequent use of these terms can be an indication that they are being influenced by the manosphere.

    Supporting your child

Most adolescents will come across manosphere content at some point. A recent survey found that 59% of boys accessed manosphere content through innocent and unrelated searches. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they endorse the misogynistic values spread by these groups.

Here are some steps you can take to support your child.

    1. Explore online together

Research commissioned by media regulator Ofcom found that children were more likely to come across harmful content if their parents are less engaged in what they are doing. Watching content that relates to your children’s hobbies, and sending them content you think they would like, can help train algorithms to promote more moderate content and open up an avenue for discussion.

Engaging online with your child can be a natural way to start conversations about what they are exposed to. It is important that you are not trying to intervene or critique, but rather understand why they enjoy watching certain influencers or content.

    2. Encourage reflection and media literacy

Research suggests that teaching children to be sceptical about what they see online can inoculate them against mis- and disinformation.

The most obvious disinformation they are most likely to come across in the manosphere may be in the form of statistics, summaries of “academic” reports, and news articles about instances of female aggression or false rape allegations. They may also come across misleading content in educational or self-help posts, about improving their appearance or how to be successful.

Ask your children why they trust certain influencers and where they think their friends get their information. These kinds of questions can help them develop their own fact-checking skills without it seeming like a lesson.

    3. Ask open-ended questions

Asking children about what they consume or what slang they use online can feel cringe. The best way to get around this is to ask simple open-ended questions such as “How do boys in your class talk about girls?” or “Have you ever heard of…?”

What you hear may be shocking, but approach it with curiosity and without judgment or dismissal to let them know they can share things with you.

If you are concerned about your child’s behaviour, you can also get support from resources such as Young Minds mental health support, the Center for Countering Digital Hate’s free parents guide or the government’s radicalisation helpline ACT Early. Getting support from government services is not a punishment. It won’t go on a person’s criminal record, but can provide access to governmental services like Prevent.

  • MIL-OSI Global: How paranormal beliefs help people cope in uncertain times

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Andrew Denovan, Senior lecturer in Psychology, Liverpool John Moores University

Paranormal beliefs create a sense of control, predictability and comfort in uncertain times, according to academic studies. That doesn’t explain why some people find them more appealing than others, though recent studies are starting to offer explanations about why some people feel so drawn to the paranormal.

Paranormal beliefs are convictions in notions beyond what mainstream science can explain, like ghosts or psychic abilities. Surveys show that a large number of people in the US and UK – between about one-third and 50% – hold these beliefs.

Our recent study found that people who feel powerless or uncertain are more likely to believe in the supernatural. This is probably because of the way our brains process uncertainty. When faced with events we cannot control, our minds look for patterns and explanations.

Paranormal beliefs create structured stories that make random events seem intentional. For example, astrology connects planetary movements to personal experiences, giving believers a way to understand their lives. People put their faith in conspiracy theories for similar reasons.

One major reason people turn to paranormal beliefs is to deal with anxiety about life. Realising that life is unpredictable and has an end can be unsettling. Supernatural beliefs provide comfort by suggesting that a higher power controls human destiny.

This perception gives life a sense of purpose and meaning. Stories about ghosts and communication with the dead help people feel connected to lost loved ones. In this way, supernatural thinking helps people cope with fears about the unknown.

Believing in the paranormal can provide comfort for some, but it can be unhelpful in some situations. For instance, a deep belief in supernatural forces might cause someone to blame their problems on supernatural forces instead of looking for practical ways to address them. Indeed, our recent research identified that belief in external supernatural forces that exert control, such as gods or fate, is associated with distress. This type of belief reflects a lack of personal control.

Conversely, our recent study showed that belief in paranormal phenomena centred on personal spirituality, such as astrology or manifesting, is not associated with stress. This seems to be because these kinds of belief emphasise personal control and meaning.

Paranormal beliefs are also influenced by mental shortcuts that shape perception of the world. Pattern recognition is a good example, where people see connections in random events. This explains why people see faces in clouds or someone thinks a series of bad events means they are cursed.

Paranormal beliefs can help people cope with uncertainty.

Another common bias is when people believe they can influence things that are beyond their control. Often referred to as the illusion of control, a 2024 study showed that this bias also applies to health, like believing in false medical treatments or cures. The researchers found that illusory health beliefs correlated positively with a belief in pseudoscience and negatively with scepticism.

    Cultural and social influences

Culture and society can strengthen paranormal beliefs. The way the media depicts supernatural events affects how people see them. Horror films and TV shows frequently portray supernatural beings interacting with the real world. Social media further amplifies these ideas, with people sharing personal stories, videos and experiences online. These shared posts can reinforce beliefs in the paranormal.

When people are surrounded by others who believe in the supernatural, they are more likely to see these ideas as true. Social norms shape these beliefs by setting expectations about what is considered acceptable or real within a culture. If a society widely accepts paranormal ideas, people are more likely to adopt and reinforce them.

Understanding the role of paranormal beliefs can help researchers create a balanced view of the people who subscribe to them. Instead of dismissing such beliefs, it is important to recognise their emotional and personal significance. Particularly, how beliefs shape people’s perspectives and coping mechanisms. While they may not align with logic or evidence, the comfort they afford is deeply meaningful to those who hold them. A 2024 study found that paranormal beliefs were not necessarily associated with negative wellbeing and were connected to a sense of meaning in life.

Research has shown that teaching critical thinking and scientific literacy can help people tell the difference between helpful spiritual practices and harmful misunderstandings. Encouraging scepticism and rational thinking allows people to engage with the world in a way that balances hope with reason.

Paranormal beliefs persist because they meet deep psychological needs. Understanding why people believe in the supernatural can lead to more compassionate discussions and help them find better ways to handle uncertainty. Whether or not someone believes in ghosts, the need for stability and comfort is something all humans share.

  • MIL-OSI: YC-Backed Startup Octolane Raises Seed Round to Challenge Salesforce with the First Self-Driving AI CRM That Automates Sales Actions and Manual CRM Updates

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SAN FRANCISCO, April 14, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Octolane, which provides the first AI-driven CRM that automates sales actions and CRM updates, announced today an oversubscribed $2.6M seed round. Founded by two young immigrants, Octolane is challenging Salesforce and other legacy CRM providers with a new AI-driven platform that automates sales actions and CRM updates. Investors include angels Brian Shin (one of the earliest investors in both HubSpot and Drift), Kulveer Taggar, Cindy Bi (CapitalX) and Dave Messina (Pioneer Fund). Y Combinator, Lan Xuezhao (Basis Set Ventures), and General Catalyst Apex also participated. Octolane will utilize the funds primarily for expanding its team and for infrastructure investments that will allow it to meet strong demand for its platform.

Traditional CRMs have become glorified databases that force sales teams to spend hours manually entering data after every customer interaction. Most reps hate using them because they create work rather than reducing it. Octolane reinvented what a CRM actually does, transforming it from a passive “System of Record” that demands constant manual updates into an intelligent “System of Actions” that predicts and executes the next steps needed to close deals. When reps log into Octolane in the morning, instead of a list of administrative to-dos, they see a list of actions already executed with recommendations for further steps reps can take to see deals progress. Reps can then spend their time actually selling.

“Octolane’s daily company updates on Twitter caught my attention so I went to visit their SF office on a Sunday,” said investor Cindy Bi. “About half an hour in, I decided to invest after learning about the founders’ journey to the U.S., talking about their ambitions, and checking their product demo. It’s obvious that Octolane has a very strong market pull from customers of all sizes that are eager to switch from Salesforce and HubSpot and that’s how an AI-first CRM should be: a system of actions, not just records. Each interaction I’ve had with the Octolane team boosts my confidence because you can tell that nothing can stop them from earning more customers from this $300B market cap opportunity.”

“What drew me to Octolane was their rare combination of customer obsession and extraordinary output,” said investor Taggar. “They’re constantly shipping improvements based on real user feedback. One and Rafi understand that retention is the true north star in this space, and they’ve been bold enough to tackle the CRM category with genuinely fresh thinking. Seeing fast-growing companies switch to their platform validates that this approach is exactly what the market has been waiting for.”

Octolane was co-founded by immigrants One Chowdhury and Md Abdul Halim Rafi – best friends since high school who taught themselves to code by watching YouTube tutorials.

Chowdhury was inspired to start a company after a visit to San Francisco. “I noticed Salesforce tower, and a friend told me, ‘It’s a big CRM software company that everyone hates,’” said Chowdhury. “I thought, if everyone hates them, why do they have the tallest building in San Francisco? I did some research and found that while Salesforce was viewed as very disruptive at its launch decades ago, it was now viewed as obsolete – AI has passed it by. I called Rafi, and we decided to build an AI-driven, sales-focused CRM from scratch that would eliminate the need for salespeople to manually update their CRM recordkeeping – something that typically eats up to two-thirds of a salesperson’s time, leading to late nights and lost time with family.” Chowdhury dropped out of Duke University (Class of 2025) to start Octolane.

Octolane, launched earlier this year, has 200 active customers with 5,000 more on a waitlist. Almost all are converts from Salesforce and Hubspot. One is Retell AI. “A CRM is critical for managing inbound volume, but most tools slow us down more than they help,” said Evie Wang, Co-Founder of Retell AI. “With Octolane, we finally found a system that just works. It automatically qualifies leads using AI, and the built-in calendar makes it seamless for high-intent leads to book meetings. We replaced 5–6 other fragmented tools and core HubSpot functionalities with Octolane, which saves thousands of dollars every month, plus deals close faster. Octolane feels like Rippling, but for CRM: everything we need in one place, finally working together. The Octolane team is one of the most reliable we’ve worked with, and the product has become a core part of how we grow.”

    About Octolane
Octolane is the first AI-native Self Driving CRM that updates itself and takes action, so sales reps can spend less time on admin and more time closing deals. Hundreds of teams have already made the switch from HubSpot and Salesforce, replacing clunky workflows for speed and AI automation. Backed by Y Combinator, General Catalyst Apex and prominent angels like Brian Shin, Kulveer Taggar and Cindy Bi, Octolane helps companies shorten sales cycles, increase win rates, and let reps do what they do best: sell. • MIL-OSI: Blockgraph and the 4As Partner to Release New Research About the Power of Household Identity in the New TV Era

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

NEW YORK, April 14, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Blockgraph, the privacy-first data collaboration platform designed to fuel the future of connected TV advertising, and the American Association of Advertising Agencies (“the 4As”) today announced the release of a new research report titled, “Reconvening in the Home: The Power of Household Identity in the New TV Era”. Ahead of this year’s upfronts, the research offers a strategic roadmap, revealing how household identity will increasingly play a central role in shaping upfront negotiations, outcome-based guarantees, multi-screen media planning, and performance-based measurement.

The television landscape continues to shift and marketers and advertisers are faced with a rapidly evolving macroeconomic environment where more sophisticated audience measurement tools are now required to connect households to outcomes.

“Household identity is an important strategy for reimagining how advertisers connect real-world behaviors and decision-making dynamics,” asserted Ashwini Karandikar, EVP, Media Tech & Data at the 4As. “The environment has never been more complex with today’s fragmented TV ecosystem, coupled with the inefficiencies in targeting and gaps in measurement. This research informs advertisers, agencies and publishers about how they can optimize their strategies across platforms while prioritizing consumer privacy and data security.”

Key findings and insights from the research include:

    1. The Importance of Household Strategies: The study details why household-level identity is essential for omnichannel advertisers to optimize their campaigns and measure performance across multiple touchpoints. Household identity enables brands to more precisely understand consumer behavior, ensuring more effective targeting and performance assessment.
    2. Addressing Privacy Regulations and Signal Loss: With increasing privacy regulations and the diminishing availability of traditional signals like IP addresses and cookies, the report explains how household identity can thrive in this new environment. It also highlights why person-based identity is no longer sufficient and how shifting to a household-first approach is essential for privacy-compliant, effective targeting.
    3. Approaches to Household Identity Resolution: The research provides a practical guide to leveraging first-party, second-party, and third-party data for household-level targeting and measurement. By integrating these data sources, marketers can create more comprehensive, accurate audience profiles, driving better campaign outcomes.
    4. Steps to Create and Execute a Household Identity Strategy: The report offers a step-by-step guide for marketers looking to future-proof their identity strategy, outlining how to create a robust, scalable approach that ensures long-term success in the rapidly changing advertising ecosystem.

“The household is the heartbeat of how TV is experienced today. When marketers can connect media exposure to real world outcomes at the household level it unlocks a true understanding of performance,” commented Jason Manningham, CEO of Blockgraph. “The future of TV is predicated on effective outcome-based measurement and campaign planning, but that only works when grounded in high quality, first party identity.”

“This report showcases just how valuable, accurate, and dependable household identity can be in shaping future innovations in TV advertising,” said Jason Brown, Senior Vice President, Chief Revenue Officer for Spectrum Reach. “In today’s advertising environment, embracing household identity data is essential for brands to stay competitive. Blockgraph, and the 4A’s are simplifying that task by providing insights that enable advertisers to effectively target, reach, and measure audiences across all platforms–making the most of their ad budgets.”

“With signal loss and growing fragmentation, it is more and more important to ground your strategy in the ability to distinguish households in order to support more accurate audience identity and measurement and to optimize the effectiveness of media spend,” added Carmela Fournier, VP and GM of Data, Comcast Advertising.

The full research report is available for download on the 4A’s website here: https://www.aaaa.org/resource/reconvening-in-the-home-the-power-of-household-identity-in-the-new-tv-era.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: The international competition “Macaroni Builder” has ended at SPbGASU

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering – Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering – The Bridge of the Pobediteley

As part of the international competition “Macaroni Builder”, students studied the theory, made calculations, designed and built towers and bridges from macaroni products. The competition was held at SPbGASU for the fifteenth time, and 26 teams from six Russian regions, as well as from Armenia and the Republic of Belarus, took part in it.

Every year the competition is gaining more and more popularity, and its participants demonstrate a high level of skill, which is understandable: in this way, the contestants develop practical skills in construction mechanics, architecture and other professional disciplines, exchange experience, ideas and knowledge, and develop creative abilities.

The competition was attended by teams from the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, Polotsk State University named after Euphrosyne of Polotsk (Republic of Belarus), Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Tyumen Industrial University, Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Belgorod State Technological University named after V.G. Shukhov, Tver State Technical University, Emperor Alexander I Petersburg State Transport University, SPbGASU, Lyceum No. 387 named after N.V. Belousov, School No. 518 of Vyborg District, Schools No. 106, No. 246 of Primorsky District, School No. 69 of Kalininsky District, School No. 87 of Petrogradsky District of St. Petersburg.

“The rather rich history of the competition confirms that it is possible to successfully create structures from pasta and develop the competencies that are necessary in the professional activities of future architects and builders. Participants understand from their own practice which structure works and which does not, see their mistakes, and remember successful examples. That is why not only victory is important, but also participation,” said Andrey Nikulin, Dean of the Construction Faculty of SPbGASU.

The competition includes two nominations: “The tallest structure. Towers” and “Structure with the largest span”. For the base of the towers, participants are provided with 100×100 cm stretchers, and tables are used as supports for the bridges. In addition to pasta, sculptural plasticine is used. Four hours of evening time are allocated for the construction of the structures. The structures must stand until 9 am the following day. The jury also took into account constructiveness, expressiveness, and rational use of materials.

Team of Belgorod State Technological University

The anniversary competition was marked by a unique event: for the first time in its history, one team became the winner in both nominations. The team from the Belgorod State Technological University named after V. G. Shukhov (Veronika Smulyarova, Aleksey Dmitriev, Ivan Pakhomov, Aleksandr Barelsky, Anna Migulina) was recognized as the champions twice.

“We participated in the competition for the third time and gained good experience. In addition, we trained hard to become professionals in our field. This victory is the result of many years of work. This year, we built a copy of the Chinese Guangzhou TV tower. It is built in the shape of an hourglass, erected in an interesting way, which attracted us. Our bridge is a cable-stayed suspension bridge dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. On one side, we installed paper numbers 1945, on the other – 2025. Each structure used 800 grams of pasta – this is a rational use of materials,” said Alexander Barelsky.

The team from Tyumen Industrial University (Dmitry Bakunin, Artemy Vasiliev, Ilya Moskaev, Nikita Leskov, Arseny Naidanov) also achieved double success, taking second place in both nominations.

In the nomination “Structure with the largest span”, the third place went to the team of the National Institute of Architecture and Construction of Armenia (Vladimir Safiridi, Movses Hakobyan, Gevorg Yusisyan, Tigran Tevosyan, Nikolay Harutyunyan).

“First of all, I would like to thank the organizers of the “Macaroni Builder”. Such competitions are one of the types of training for students, when students assemble what they designed with their own hands and see in practice how this structure works and for what reasons it falls. It is a useful thing to see how structures work. The competition encourages students to new achievements. We built a railway bridge on the bypass of the branch from the city of Dilijan to the city of Vanadzor. The guys assembled the model and the bridge span correctly, making a close copy of the real structure. In addition, they got acquainted with the design experience of other students. We will try to take into account the first experience we have gained in the next competition, which we would like to attend,” said the team leader, head of the Department of Roads and Bridges of the National Institute of Architecture and Construction of Armenia Artashes Sargsyan.

In the nomination “The tallest structure. Towers” the third place was taken by the team of the Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (Olga Kupetskova, Yulia Yudina, Ekaterina Nesterova, Roman Mukhatov, Daria Yakovleva).

We’ve been sponsoring Tony Stewart Racing and the Matt Hagan Funny Car for three seasons now and the relationship with Tony, Leah, Matt and everyone in the wider NHRA family has been extraordinary. The only thing better than having a cold Rebel Light and being in victory lane at an NHRA event is bringing the party. I’ll be performing a concert bringing my brand of patriotic rock ‘n’ roll immediately following the racing action on Saturday night.”

The American Rebel Light NHRA 4-Wide Nationals will roar into zMAX Dragway on Friday, April 25, with an adrenaline-pumping opening round of qualifying under the lights. The action intensifies throughout the weekend with 330 mph passes from sunup to sundown, building up to the heart-pounding eliminations on Sunday, April 27. With every ticket serving as a pit pass, fans will get unrivaled access to drivers, teams and pits throughout the weekend.
