  • MIL-OSI Security: Mother sentenced for murdering her two young sons

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

A woman has been sentenced to life for murdering her two young sons in their east London home in 2022.

Kara Alexander, 47 (23.12.77), of Cornwallis Road, Dagenham was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 24 years in prison at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, 11 April for drowning her children.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Waller of the Metropolitan Police, who led the investigation, said:

“This is an incredibly tragic case, which has left a father without his two beloved boys and a family without two young brothers.

“Kara Alexander will spend the next two decades behind bars, where the memory of what she has done will haunt her forever.

“To the family and friends of Elijah and Marley, while no amount of time will erase the pain of such a loss, I hope this sentence serves to bring some semblance of justice.

“I hope you can now move on with your life, remembering the boys as you knew them, and treasuring the happy times you spent with them.”

Emergency services were called at around 14:00hrs on 16 December 2022, after the bodies of two young children were found by their father in their shared bunkbed inside their house in Dagenham.

Two-year-old Elijah Thomas and five-year-old Marley Thomas were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the discovery, their mother Kara Alexander ran from the house, but was arrested nearby a short time later.

Post-mortem examinations identified drowning as the cause of death for both boys.

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command launched an investigation, reviewing footage from local CCTV cameras and doorbells and forensically analysing Alexander’s phone.

Alexander was charged on 19 December 2022 with two counts of murder and was convicted at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, 21 February following a three-week trial.

    Non-GAAP Financial Measures

We use certain financial measures that are not calculated in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles in the U.S. (GAAP) to supplement our consolidated financial statements. These non-GAAP financial measures provide additional information to investors to facilitate comparisons of past and present operating results, identify trends in our underlying operating performance, and offer greater transparency on how we evaluate our business activities. These measures are integral to our processes for budgeting, managing operations, making strategic decisions, and evaluating our performance.

Our primary non-GAAP financial measures are EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA. We define EBITDA as net income before interest, income taxes, and depreciation and amortization. Adjusted EBITDA is defined as EBITDA further adjusted to exclude certain non-cash items, non-recurring expenses, and other items that are not indicative of our core operating activities. These may include stock-based compensation, acquisition costs, and other financial items. We believe Adjusted EBITDA is valuable for investors and analysts as it provides additional insight into our operational performance, excluding the impacts of certain financing, investing, and other non-operational activities. This measure helps in comparing our current operating results with prior periods and with those of other companies in our industry. It is also used internally for allocating resources efficiently, assessing the economic outcomes of acquisitions and strategic decisions, and evaluating the performance of our management team.

There are limitations to Adjusted EBITDA, including its exclusion of cash expenditures, future requirements for capital expenditures and contractual commitments, and changes in or cash requirements for working capital needs. Adjusted EBITDA also omits significant interest expenses and related cash requirements for interest and payments. While depreciation and amortization are non-cash charges, the associated assets will often need to be replaced in the future, and Adjusted EBITDA does not reflect the cash required for such replacements. Additionally, Adjusted EBITDA does not account for income or other taxes or necessary cash tax payments.

Investors should use caution when comparing our non-GAAP measure to similar metrics used by other companies, as definitions can vary. Adjusted EBITDA should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for GAAP financial measures.

In presenting Adjusted EBITDA, we aim to provide investors with an additional tool for assessing the operational performance of our business. It serves as a useful complement to our GAAP results, offering a more comprehensive understanding of our financial health and operational efficiencies.

    (1) Interest expense, net – For the combined twelve months ended December 31, 2024, interest expense, net includes interest incurred on our various borrowing facilities and the amortization of debt issuance costs. Additional debt issuance cost associated with a loan commitment fee asset in the amount of $10,041 was written off in combined twelve months ended December 31, 2024 and has also been included in this adjustment. This amount is representative of the asset associated with the second and third tranches of the WTI facility. When it became known that we would not be able to draw on these subsequent tranches based on certain metrics contained within the WTI Facility agreement, we immediately wrote this asset off. For the Predecessor year ended December 31, 2023, this balance is comprised entirely of interest incurred on our various borrowing facilities.
    (2) Transaction and other related costs – For the combined twelve months ended December 31, 2024 and for the Predecessor year ended December 31, 2023 this is comprised entirely of consulting, legal, and other professional fees related to the business combination with Learn CW Investment Corporation (the “Business Combination”).
    (3) Change in fair value of financial liabilities – For the combined twelve months ended December 31, 2024 the change in fair value of financial liabilities primarily consists of the change in fair value of the warrant liability, change in fair value of the earnout liability, and the change in the fair value of the embedded derivative associated with convertible notes prior to extinguishment. For the Predecessor year ended December 31, 2023, this is comprised entirely of the change in fair value of the embedded derivative associated with the convertible notes.
    (4) Stock based compensation – For the combined twelve months ended December 31, 2024 stock based compensation primarily consisted of awards in the 2024 Equity and Incentive Plan entered into on October 2, 2024 subsequent to the Business Combination. These awards consisted of Stock Options, Restricted Stock Units, and Stock Appreciation Rights. Further, a portion of this expense was related to share based payment employee incentive plans in existence at Innventure LLC and other subsidiaries. For the Predecessor year ended December 31, 2023, stock based compensation was comprised wholly of share based payment employee incentive plans in existence at Innventure LLC and other subsidiaries.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Be there or be square when disco fever hits Leeds this summer

    Source: City of Leeds

Disco fever is set to hit City Square this summer with the return of an exciting outdoor events space.

After a hugely successful debut last year, THOR’S tipi will return to the square on May 16 with a glamourous new disco theme, including glitter balls, the best disco music and themed activities.

The square, which last year was transformed by one of the city’s most ambitious ever transport projects, will see THOR’S providing a selection of cocktails and street food, along with disco-themed games, drinks inspired by nostalgic ice lollies, and live acoustic sessions every Thursday.

Amanda Monaghan, director at THOR’S said “We’re thrilled to be bringing THOR’S back to City Square after such a successful debut year last year, when people really got into the spirit.

“Bringing the party to such a brilliant space was fantastic and we can’t wait to get the party started in May with a new disco theme. It’s sure to be a summer to remember with some classic music, food and drinks.”

This summer will also see the arrival of a new pop-up park on City Square, with additional seating for people to enjoy the space and sunshine.

The park is designed to make the most of the perdestrianised area provided by the City Square improvement works, which have seen an eye-catching new traffic free gateway to the city created along with a new public space.

Little Bird Made will also be returning this year, hosting a monthly pop-up market on City Square.

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, said: “One of our key aims for the City Square project was to create an attractive, welcoming gateway to the city and a new public space that people living, visiting or working in the city could enjoy.

“Last summer’s events programme really brought this space to life in a whole new way and it was fantastic to see people making the most of this landmark new addition to the city’s public realm.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming people back to the square this summer for more events and activities and hopefully some sunshine too.”

THOR’S Tipi will be on City Square from May 16 until August 25 and will be delivered at no cost to the council.

WAVES XR Creator Hackathon Winners Bring XR Innovation to Schools, Clinics, Homes, and Beyond

Five winning teams will showcase their XR projects at WAVE Summit

XR Innovators coming up in large numbers from Tier 2 and 3 cities

Posted On: 10 APR 2025 9:06PM by PIB Mumbai

    Mumbai, 10 April 2025

From immersive science labs to cross-platform war games, India’s top eXtended Reality (XR) innovators are redefining how we learn, heal, shop, and travel! The winners of the XR Creator Hackathon, which is a part of Create in India Challenge (CIC) Season-1, launched as part of the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES), organised by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in collaboration with Wavelaps, have been declared. The hackathon, aimed at accelerating India’s presence in immersive technology, had five thematic categories — healthcare-fitness & well-being, educational transformation, immersive tourism, digital media & entertainment, and e-commerce-retail transformation.

More than 2,200 participants from across India registered for the hackathon. After three rounds of evaluation, five teams have emerged as winners, representing a mix of students, professionals, and entrepreneurs from different cities and institutions. The winner announcement was done in a ‘Winners’ Ceremony’ which was organized virtually over a YouTube live stream.

A brief about the Winning Teams and their XR Projects

    1) The winner in the theme, ‘Educational Transformation’ is the team XR Runners with their project ‘Eduscape XR’

The VR-based platform, developed by the students of IIT Kharagpur, EduscapeXR, allows students to perform realistic, immersive experiments in subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology using hand-tracking and AI-based feedback. It addresses the lack of laboratory infrastructure in many schools and colleges. “In many parts of the country, students study science without doing real experiments. We wanted to change that and our project aims to revolutionise education by providing STEM practicals on a virtual reality platform,” said Vedanta Hazra, who led the team with Sahil Patel and Shaurya Baranwal.

    2) The Winner in the theme, ‘Healthcare, Fitness & Well-being’ is team Cognihab with their project ‘Cognihab’

Cognihab offers XR-powered rehabilitation solutions that support recovery from lazy eye, stroke, and anxiety. “We’re focused on outcomes in real medical settings and this hackathon helped us sharpen our approach and reach new stakeholders,” said team lead Rishab Kapur.  Team members include Pintu Kumar and others with a background in XR-based health tech.

    3) The winners of the theme ‘Immersive Tourism’ is the team LumeXR with their project is ‘Immersive Travel Guide’

LumeXR developed a mixed-reality tourism guide that allows users to explore destinations virtually. The experience includes a 3D map interface, drone-shot photogrammetry, and embedded video stories, making trip planning more engaging and efficient. The platform also enables tourism brands to offer XR-based previews that go beyond traditional brochures or videos. “This isn’t just a travel app — it’s immersive cultural storytelling, with the help of our project, users can now ‘feel’ a destination before booking it,” said LumeXR’s team lead, Savio.

    4) The winners of the theme ‘E-Commerce & Retail Transformation’ theme is team ‘EMO’ with their project ‘Heaven Estate’

Heaven Estate lets homeowners visualize interior designs in AR and 3D before making real-world decisions. What sets it apart is the focus on user-designer collaboration — where verified interior designers upload visualizations that clients can preview in their own space. “We wanted to create a real bridge between homeowners and professionals,” said EMO’s team lead Utkarsh Rai, who built the project with Himanshu Mahto, Ashutosh Mishra, and Ishita Guar. The EMO team credits the mentorship phase of the hackathon for refining their design and user experience.

    5) The winners of the theme ‘Digital Media & Entertainment’ is team Youth Buzz with their project ‘Immersive Warfare Simulator’

Youth Buzz created The Game of Dimensions, a multiplayer tactical war game playable across VR (virtual reality) headsets and  mobile, offering an immersive gameplay. “We wanted to unify the gaming experience across platforms and realities,” said team lead, Mohit Kumar Sharma. His teammates include Anish Dombale, A Shivam Raj, and Yash Sadhukhan.

XR Innovators are coming up from Tier 2 and 3 cities

The hackathon saw participation from 66% Tier 2 and 3 cities, including Chengalpet, Manipal, and Veraval. The participants ranged from 17 to 35 years. Of the 40 finalist teams, 53% were students, 33% working professionals, and 14% self-employed entrepreneurs. Notably, 19% of the finalists were women — a strong indicator of growing gender diversity in XR innovation.

With support from Wavelaps, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, and the two leading XR communities, BharatXR and XDG, the finalists are now stepping onto the world stage — where ideas born in classrooms, hostels, and home studios may soon reach global users. While the winners have been declared, the XR Creator Hackathon isn’t over yet. All five teams are now preparing to showcase their projects at the WAVES Summit — a global media and entertainment event organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, scheduled from May 1–4, 2025, in Mumbai.

“The XR Creator Hackathon is not just nurturing innovation — it’s building the foundation for a new digital India. These solutions will redefine how we learn, heal, travel, and connect.” said Ashutosh Kumar, Founder & CEO of Wavelaps.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Council suspends busking in Leicester square following court ruling | Westminster City Council

    Source: City of Westminster

    • Recent court ruling leaves Westminster City Council with no choice.
    • Council remains committed to seeking a balance between buskers and local business.

Following a ruling by a City of London magistrates’ court judge last month, Westminster City Council has suspended two busking performance pitches in Leicester Square in order to comply.

In the case between Global Radio and Westminster City Council on the 26th March, the district judge ordered the local authority to stop the nuisance that is caused by “noise from the playing of music by buskers playing in Leicester Square”.

It puts the council in an impossible position as they have always tried to make sure the right balance is struck between everyone involved. They have looked to ensure that disruption by performers is minimised but they know how much performers are loved by visitors and are an iconic part of the city’s tourist scene and are keen to make sure that buskers are able to continue and adding to the wider city’s cultural heritage.

Unfortunately, the ruling leaves the council with no choice but to suspend performance pitches in Leicester Square.

In a letter sent to licenced performers who currently work in the area, the local authority shared their decision and outlined what happens next. From Thursday 17th April until further notice, all licensed and unlicensed buskers and street entertainers will have to comply with the suspension in Leicester Square.

Anyone who performs in the affected area may face enforcement that includes a fine, equipment being seized or even their licence being taken off them.

Cllr Matt Noble, Westminster City Council Spokesperson said:

Street performers are a much-loved part of our city’s identity, but we also have to balance this with a duty to protect residents and businesses. The court ruling gives us no choice—we now have a legal obligation to act.”

“This is categorically not a ban on street performers in Westminster. Our next step is to comply with the ruling by suspending street performance pitches in Leicester Square, consider the court ruling and find a fair solution.”

    ENDS

    Notes to Editors:

City of London Magistrates’ Court ruled in favour of Global Radio and determined that:

    • A statutory nuisance exists and is likely to recur from busking in Leicester Square.
    • An abatement order has been issued against the council, requiring us to:
      • Abate the statutory nuisance consisting of noise from the playing of music by buskers in Leicester Square, and
      • Prevent the recurrence of that statutory nuisance.
    • The council must comply with this Order within 28 days of 26 March 2025.

This suspension will remain in effect until further notice. During this period, the council will review the Court’s judgment in detail and consider its next steps. This includes assessing the issues raised by the Court, exploring its grounds of appeal and in due course, exploring any appropriate revisions to the busking and street entertainment licensing regime, such as pitch locations, licence and pitch terms and conditions, and the wider Council policy for this regime.

A unique documentary film produced by the family of Charlie Chaplin opened the film screening segment of the second Macao International Comedy Festival, currently taking place in China’s special administrative region.

“Chaplin: Spirit of the Tramp ,” directed by Carmen Chaplin, a granddaughter of the legendary comedian, actor, director and producer, is not a conventional biopic and features deep involvement from the Chaplins. Several members of the family either appear on camera to share their insights and memories or contribute behind the scenes as producers.

In the film, Chaplin’s family embarks on a revealing journey into the Romani heritage that inspired the creation of Charlie Chaplin’s iconic and beloved character of the Tramp. Featuring intimate interviews and unprecedented access to the Chaplin estate, the documentary offers a profound exploration of Chaplin’s roots, woven together through film excerpts, home movies, archival footage and contributions from renowned contemporary Romani artists.

Dolores Chaplin, another granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, served as a producer on the film and attended the comedy festival to present it to Chinese viewers on Thursday, also participating in a post-screening discussion.

“I think that this documentary is a great way to introduce my grandfather’s works to the younger generation who maybe don’t know his movies that well,” Dolores said. “Every time we’ve shown it to children or the younger generation or young adults or people who don’t know my grandfather, they wanted to see his movies. It’s like rediscovering his movies through the documentary, through the man, through his passion and through the family side, but also with the clips.”

As a comedy icon, Charlie Chaplin’s films have influenced generations. His movies are able to transcend language and travel across cultures like music. “For an actor, it’s difficult to be known worldwide, but for a musician, it’s easier because music travels. Yet as an actor in silent films, he was known everywhere — from Iceland to China to Spain. It’s nice to keep that alive.”

While opening a film segment meant to be filled with laughter, “Chaplin: Spirit of the Tramp” instead offers an emotional retrospective. Yet Dolores stressed that its messages remain vital.

“I feel that humor is a great way to convey any kind of message — it could be political, it could be emotional and it could be anything really. If you pass it through humor, people will relate to it easier or sometimes we’ll maybe look at it and understand it better. Humor must never be one thing, it has many coats,” she added.

“Chaplin: Spirit of the Tramp” will also be shown at the upcoming 15th Beijing International Film Festival, set to open on April 18.

The comedy festival’s film program, which is running from April 10-13, will feature classic comedies such as “Crazy Rich Asians,” the “Detective Chinatown” series, “Johnny Keep Walking!” and “Lost in Thailand,” alongside the premiere of Takeshi Kitano’s new film “Broken Rage.” The film event will also feature post-screening panels and masterclasses, offering both movie enthusiasts and industry professionals the opportunity to discuss comedy creation.

The second Macao International Comedy Festival kicked off in Hengqin, a district of Zhuhai city in Guangdong province neighboring Macao, on Wednesday. Running through Sunday across the two regions, it will gather top comedians like Shen Teng and Ma Li, international filmmakers including Takeshi Kitano and Aamir Khan, and include film screenings, stage performances, industry forums, pitch sessions and a gala night at venues in both locations.

Source: China State Council Information Office

A large-scale durian cultivation project will be launched in southern Laos’ Attapeu province, covering hundreds of hectares of land to support the government’s push for commercial fruit farming.

The move supports Laos’ ambition to become a durian supplier to neighboring China, the Lao national TV reported on Thursday.

More than 273 hectares of land have been allocated for durian cultivation as part of a national policy to promote private investment in agriculture and forest conservation amid a rising demand from China.

The Lao government is encouraging farmers and producers to supply more goods to the domestic market and produce more for export to bring in much-needed foreign currency.

The government is targeting a 4.3 percent growth in agriculture for 2025, aiming to increase the sector’s contribution to the country’s gross domestic product to 22.4 percent.

  • MIL-OSI: Bitget Wallet Launches Contract Risk Detection Tool to Strengthen Security

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, April 11, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bitget Wallet, a leading Web3 non-custodial wallet, has introduced the token contract risk detection feature to strengthen transaction security across its platform. The feature enables users to screen for potential risks before engaging with tokens, reflecting Bitget Wallet’s continued commitment to user protection and transparency in decentralized finance.

The feature is now available for tokens on six major blockchains including Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Base, Polygon, and Arbitrum. Accessible directly within the token candlestick chart interface, users can review essential contract data, including permission status, token distribution among top holders, and burn ratios. These indicators help identify potential vulnerabilities such as excessive centralization or active minting permissions, which may signal higher risk.

As onchain participation increases and interest in long-tail assets grows, users are navigating an increasingly fragmented and complex token landscape. Without reliable data, it becomes challenging to assess token credibility and contract behavior. According to the Onchain Report, 37% of users cite security risks as their top concern when using crypto for payments or transfers, highlighting the demand for accessible tools that address these challenges. The launch of Bitget Wallet’s detection tool aims to bridge this gap with greater clarity and control.

The new tool complements Bitget Wallet’s broader security framework, which includes MEV protection by default, onchain transaction simulation, and integrated threat detection. Together, these measures form a comprehensive protection system designed to minimize user exposure to malicious contracts and trading vulnerabilities.

As DeFi adoption accelerates, providing users with accessible tools to evaluate risk is no longer optional — it’s essential,” said Alvin Kan, COO of Bitget Wallet. “This feature is part of our broader strategy to empower users with the information they need to navigate Web3 safely and confidently.”

    About Bitget Wallet
Bitget Wallet is the home of Web3, uniting endless possibilities in one non-custodial wallet. With over 60 million users, it offers comprehensive onchain services, including asset management, instant swaps, rewards, staking, trading tools, live market data, a DApp browser and crypto payment solutions. Supporting over 130 blockchains, 20,000+ DApps, and millions of tokens, Bitget Wallet enables seamless multi-chain trading across hundreds of DEXs and cross-chain bridges, along with a $300+ million protection fund to ensure safety of users’ assets.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Kids cheering ‘chicken jockey!’ at A Minecraft Movie isn’t antisocial – it creates a chance for us to connect

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Sophia Staite, Lecturer in Humanities, University of Tasmania

    Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

Social media is ablaze with reports of kids going wild at screenings of A Minecraft Movie.

Some cinemas are cracking down. There are reports of cinemas calling in police to deal with rowdy theatregoers and making special announcements before the film, warning of consequences for “anti-social behaviour” including “clapping and shouting”.

But these kids are engaging in a kind of communal experience. Rather than being antisocial behaviour – couldn’t we label it as prosocial?

    The global fandom of Minecraft

Minecraft was first released in 2011 and has sold over 350 million copies, making it the best-selling video game of all time.

Minecraft is an unstructured game that provides mineable resources and leaves players to create whatever they want with them. Creations can be as basic as stacking blocks of wood to make a wall, or as complex as a working computer.

It has become the nexus of a vast online community of people with an interest in the game.

Players connect to one-another digitally and share certain social norms and knowledge, including a memeified vernacular. Minecraft-playing Youtubers have also become popular, and are the source of many memes.

The community is dominated by children and young adults and the incomprehensibility of their vernacular for other generations is possibly part of its appeal.

Within child and youth fan communities the usual hierarchies of communication are reversed. Instead of kids having to learn to speak according to adults’ rules, in this community the kids maintain a knowledge system that excludes a lot of adults.

    Enter A Minecraft Movie

A Minecraft Movie opened last weekend to enormous box office success, bringing in US$313.2 million globally. The film follows four humans who stumble through a portal into the Overworld (Minecraft). Their only way home involves teaming up with fellow human Steve (Jack Black) to save the Overworld from the creativity-hating Piglins.

Almost immediately, social media conversations sprang up about the behaviour of audiences. One bemused parent described the atmosphere of the cinema as “like [when] The Beatles came to America”.

Many of the videos shared of audiences during screenings show joyful scenes of communal pleasure, similar to other responses to highly anticipated films such as Avengers: Endgame.

But while the response to Avengers: Endgame was celebrated, the behaviour of children and teens at A Minecraft Movie has been framed by news outlets in negative terms.

Journalist Keith Stuart suggests the different responses are a result of parents feeling excluded by A Minecraft Movie’s frequent references to memes.

Negative news reports link audience behaviour to existing moral panics about social media challenges and are particularly focused on popcorn being thrown.

The use of the same two or three videos of popcorn throwing to illustrate multiple news articles highlights how relatively few reports of popcorn throwing there currently are.

Instead, most of the debate on social media has been about the etiquette of noisiness during screenings, including cheering and clapping.

    Finding community

A Minecraft Movie speaks the memeified vernacular of its online community.

The film incorporates references to longstanding memes, popular Minecraft YouTubers (and some cameos) and, of course, to the game itself.

The film is speaking directly to Minecraft fans, and audiences are responding by displaying their mastery of this vernacular and strengthening their sense of belonging.

By clapping and cheering when they recognise a meme, or saying lines of dialogue in sync with the actors, kids are identifying themselves as members of a community.

When a whole cinema full of young people does this simultaneously, they are identifying themselves to and with one another.

This is prosocial, strategic communication – not the antisocial pandemonium and chaos some reports would have us believe. Instead, fans are reporting the cheering and clapping happens at specific moments: they are enjoying both the film, and reacting to it.

During the brief (but meaningful for knowledgeable audience members) tribute to beloved YouTuber Technoblade, who died of cancer in 2022, there have been reports of whole theatres falling silent as a mark of respect.

An online community of kids and teens has suddenly become hyper visible to adults because it has intersected with the traditional media space of the cinema.

Online games such as Minecraft are a crucial part of kids’ social lives and play.

Perhaps adults can seize this moment as an opportunity to learn more about something that clearly matters deeply to a lot of kids.

Sophia Staite does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Beachside burglars land in court

Source: New Zealand Police (National News)

A pair of alleged thieves responsible for a string of burglaries in the beachside suburb of Piha are now facing court.

Between late January and 10 April, Police has received 14 reports relating to burglary, theft and suspicious activity in the Piha area.

Waitematā West Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Kelly Farrant, says Police have spent the past few months investigating the reports and making a number of enquiries, including the use of CCTV.

“We were subsequently able to identify two people of interest in relation to four of the reports.

“Yesterday, with the assistance of the Police Dog Unit, Delta, we executed a search warrant at a West Coast Road property and took two people into custody.”

Inspector Farrant says a number of stolen items were recovered and enquiries remain ongoing.

“Our community deserves to go about their business without the threat of being a victim of crime and we will continue to respond and hold these offenders to account.

“We will continue to actively target burglary offenders every single day, and we continue to ask members of the public to report any instances of suspicious behaviour in a timely manner.”

A 34-year-old man will appear in Waitākere District Court today charged with two counts of burglary, unlawful possession of ammunition and failure to carry out obligations in relation to a computer search.

A 32-year-old woman charged with burglary, unlawfully in an enclosed area, possession of methamphetamine utensils and failure to carry out obligations in relation to a computer search will appear in Waitākere District Court on 16 April.

Police are not ruling out further charges.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: ANZAC Day Events – Art of Remembrance 2025: ANZAC Tribute to New Zealand’s Nurses

Source: Lindsay Stanley, for Art of Remembrance event on Anzac Eve

Annual commemorative event at Kāhui St David’s to mark Anzac Eve with a moving musical tribute featuring Soprano Felicity Tomkins, Michelle Thorne, and friends.   A bronze plaque honouring the Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps will be unveiled.

11 April 2025 – Auckland, New Zealand – To mark Anzac week, Kāhui St David’s, Auckland’s centre for music-making, inspiration and social connection, will host the 10th annual Art of Remembrance event on Anzac Eve, Thursday 24 April, with a powerful evening of music, reflection and tribute.

Event:  Art of Remembrance 2025 – we will will remember them
    When: Thursday 24 April | 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Where: Kāhui St David’s, 70 Khyber Pass Road, Grafton, Auckland
Tickets: Free entry – all welcome – tickets available via Eventfinda | www.kahuistdavids.nz

St David’s Memorial Church, whose foundation stone was laid on Anzac Day 1927 as a memorial to World War One, was originally dedicated as The Soldiers’ Memorial Church. Today, it is home to Kāhui St David’s, a charitable trust,  and serves as a place of remembrance for all branches of the New Zealand Defence Force, as well as Auckland’s centre for cultural connection, community gathering, as a living memorial. .

Honouring the Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps

This year’s Art of Remembrance pays special tribute to the Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps, past and present, for their service in war, conflict and peacekeeping. It also recognises the vital role nurses play across Aotearoa – providing care in hospitals, communities, both at home and abroad.

Georgina Greville, a senior nurse at Middlemore Hospital, whose immediate family included five World War One service members, says: “There were two nurses, two doctors, and one soldier with the Auckland Mounted Rifles.
“My grandmother and sister were both nurses, serving in Egypt, Lemnos, and on the Western front, including at the Battle of the Somme.

“The role of nurses in conflict and peacekeeping has historically been overlooked for many reasons. Having this permanent display in the Great Hall of Kāhui St David’s, near the Lamp of Remembrance, the RNZE memorial window, the Sappers’ Chapel, and plaques dedicated to the 28th Māori Battalion and 29th and 30th Infantry Battalions, will be deeply meaningful to all nurses.

“It recognises the contribution of nursing across all areas we serve – in both military and civilian contexts.”

Kāhui St David’s is located in Grafton, near the medical and nursing schools and Auckland Hospital.

As part of this year’s commemoration, a bronze plaque dedicated to the Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps will be unveiled and permanently installed in the Great Hall of Kāhui St David’s.

Paul Baragwanath, Director of Friends of St David’s Trust Kāhui Rangi Pūpū, says: “Nurses have served with courage and compassion in every major conflict New Zealand has faced. In what is our 10th year of Art of Remembrance, we honour their legacy, their ongoing service, and their place at the heart of care – both in uniform and throughout our hospitals and communities.

“We also hope that all nurses will see Kāhui St David’s as their place, together with whānau of the RNZE (Royal New Zealand Engineers), 28 Battalion and Veterans.” says Baragwanath.

Since launching in 2015 with the Max Gimblett quatrefoil installation, the Art of Remembrance has become a nationally recognised tradition. In 2023, Brigadier Rose King (now Chief of Army) lit the Lamp of Remembrance, which continues to shine daily at Kāhui St David’s, honouring all who have served across the Defence Force and veteran community. Today, the building stands as a memorial for all branches of service.

Many are expected to attend Art of Remembrance, experiencing the magnificent acoustics of this revitalised heritage space, with performances by Soprano Felicity Tomkins and Michelle Thorne, David Harvey on bagpipes, the Off Broadway Big Band, Helen Lukman-Fox on the 1905 Croft Organ and the audience singing together.

Paul Baragwanath concludes: “Kāhui St David’s is a place where remembrance lives on – through art, music, and community, and New Zealand’s military remembrance.

“This much-loved annual event brings together veterans, whānau, musicians and the wider public in a space known for its magnificent acoustics and deep sense of purpose.

“This new plaque ensures our nurses, so often unsung, are acknowledged in this special space for generations to come.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: BREAKING: Republicans Block Cortez Masto’s Efforts to Exempt Our Allies Israel and Ukraine from Harmful Tariffs

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Nevada Cortez Masto
FTPs for TV stations is available here.
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) called out Republican politicians for blocking efforts to exempt American allies under attack, Israel and Ukraine, from the Trump Administration’s harmful tariffs. On the Senate floor, Cortez Masto sought unanimous consent to pass her legislation which would exempt Israel and Ukraine from blanket tariffs that President Trump has slapped on these wartime economies.
“We all know that targeted tariffs can be a useful tool to protect critical American manufacturing and combat our enemies, but that isn’t what President Trump is doing. Instead, he’s punishing our allies Israel and Ukraine,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “Both these countries are currently under attack. They need the United States to be standing with them, not hitting them with nonsensical tariffs that could cause them even more harm. It is outrageous that my Republican colleagues blocked an opportunity to fix this and come together to protect our allies.”
America’s ally Israel originally got hit with a 17% tariff – even though we maintain a Free Trade Agreement with them – their adversary Iran got tariffed at 10%. The Trump Administration put no tariffs on Russia, but charged Ukraine with a 10% tariff. As Senator Cortez Masto was speaking on the floor, President Trump announced via tweet that over 75 countries, including Israel and Ukraine, will be tariffed at 10% for the next 90 days.
Senator Cortez Masto has consistently stood with Israel. She has repeatedly voted to deliver critical funding to support Israel’s national Security, and has urged the Administration to crack down on the finances of international terrorist organizations, including Iran’s state sponsorship of terrorism. She has also been a strong advocate for the U.S. to stand up to Russian aggression and support Ukrainian sovereignty. Cortez Masto has voted to pass bipartisan legislation to support Ukraine and helped pass bipartisan economic sanctions that were signed into law to hold Russia accountable for its illegal invasion of Ukraine.

  • MIL-OSI USA: News 04/10/2025 Blackburn, Cantwell, Heinrich Reintroduce Bipartisan Bill to Increase Transparency, Combat AI Deepfakes & Put Journalists, Artists & Songwriters Back in Control of Their Content

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) reintroduced the Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act (COPIED ACT) to combat harmful deepfakes. The bill would set new federal transparency guidelines for marking, authenticating and detecting AI-generated content, protect journalists, actors and artists against AI-driven theft, and hold violators accountable for abuses.

“Artificial intelligence has given bad actors the ability to create deepfakes of every individual, including those in the creative community, to imitate their likeness without their consent and profit off of counterfeit content,” said Senator Blackburn. “The COPIED Act takes an important step to better defend common targets like artists and performers against deepfakes and other inauthentic content.”

“The bipartisan COPIED Act I introduced with Senator Blackburn will provide much-needed transparency around AI-generated content,” said Senator Cantwell. “The COPIED Act will also put creators, including local journalists, artists and musicians, back in control of their content with a provenance and watermark process that is very much needed.”

“Deepfakes are a real threat to our democracy and to Americans’ safety and well-being,” said Senator Heinrich. “I’m proud to support Senator Cantwell’s COPIED Act that will provide the technical tools needed to help crack down on harmful and deceptive AI-generated content and better protect professional journalists and artists from having their content used by AI systems without their consent. Congress needs to step up and pass this legislation to protect the American people.”

    The COPIED Act (S. 1396):

    Bill Text and Summary

    • Creates Transparency Standards: Requires the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop guidelines and standards for content provenance information, watermarking and synthetic content detection. These standards will promote transparency to identify if content has been generated or manipulated by AI, as well as where AI content originated. The bill also directs NIST to develop cybersecurity measures to prevent tampering with provenance and watermarking on AI content.
    • Puts Journalists, Artists and Musicians in Control of Their Content: Requires providers of AI tools used to generate creative or journalistic content to allow owners of that content to attach provenance information to it and prohibits its removal. The bill prohibits the unauthorized use of content with provenance information to train AI models or generate AI content. These measures give content owners—journalists, newspapers, artists, songwriters, and others—the ability to protect their work and set the terms of use for their content, including compensation.
    • Gives Individuals a Right to Sue Violators: Authorizes the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and state attorneys general to enforce the bill’s requirements.  It also gives newspapers, broadcasters, artists, and other content owners the right to bring suit in court against platforms or others who use their content without permission.
    • Prohibits Tampering with or Disabling AI Provenance Information: Currently, there is no law that prohibits removing, disabling, or tampering with content provenance information. The bill prohibits anyone, including internet platforms, search engines and social media companies, from interfering with content provenance information in these ways.

    Major Endorsements

    SAG-AFTRA

“For SAG-AFTRA, protecting the ability of our members to control their images, likenesses, and voices is paramount. The capacity of AI to produce stunningly accurate digital representations of performers poses a real and present threat to the economic and reputational well-being and self-determination of our members.  Senator Cantwell’s legislation would ensure that the tools necessary to make the use of AI technology transparent and traceable to the point of origin will make it possible for victims of the misuse of the technology to identify malicious parties and go after them. We need a fully transparent and accountable supply chain for generative Artificial Intelligence and the content it creates in order to protect everyone’s basic right to control the use of their face, voice, and persona. We applaud Senator Cantwell for her leadership on the issue and support this legislation as part of a comprehensive approach to preventing unauthorized abuse of this transformative technology.”  Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator

    Nashville Songwriters Association International

“The Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), the world’s largest songwriter advocacy trade association, applauds Senators Maria Cantwell, Blackburn and Heinrich for introducing legislation to help put transparency guardrails around Generative Artificial Intelligence for human creators. Specifically, we note her including artists in the Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act and recognizing it is more financially feasible for songwriters and other human creators to adjudicate these matters in a local civil court when possible. NSAI will work with her office toward adoption of this important legislation.” – Barton Herbison, Executive Director NSAI

    Recording Academy

“The Recording Academy applauds Chair Cantwell and Senators Blackburn and Heinrich for their commitment to the ethical use of AI and their recognition of the need for guardrails that provide transparency and protection for creators. We look forward to continuing to work with them as this process moves forward.”  – Todd Dupler, Chief Advocacy and Public Policy Officer

    National Music Publishers’ Association

“We greatly appreciate Senator Cantwell’s leadership on preventing the unauthorized use and dissemination of deepfakes. The Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act of 2025 ensures that AI-generated content is clearly identified and that there is recourse when those labels are tampered with. As AI-generated music continues to disrupt the legitimate market, it is essential that listeners know where their music is coming from. Artists and songwriters deserve protection against unauthorized imitations and this legislation is an important step towards that goal.” – David Israelite, President and CEO

    Recording Industry Association of America

“Protecting the life’s work and legacy of artists has never been more important as AI platforms copy and use recordings scraped off the internet at industrial scale and AI-generated deepfakes keep multiplying at rapid pace. RIAA strongly supports provenance requirements as a fundamental building block for accountability and enforcement of creators’ rights. Leading tech companies refuse to share basic data about the creation and training of their models as they profit from copying and using unlicensed copyrighted material to generate synthetic recordings that unfairly compete with original works. We appreciate Senators Cantwell, Blackburn and Heinrich’s leadership with the Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act of 2025 that would grant much needed visibility into AI development and pave the way for more ethical innovation and fair and transparent competition in the digital marketplace.” – Mitch Glazier, Chairman and CEO

    The Television Academy

“The Television Academy, representing nearly 30,000 members across all disciplines of the television industry, applauds Senator Cantwell for reintroducing the COPIED Act. As artificial intelligence and digital replication technologies evolve, the need for transparency is tantamount. This bill will set necessary federal transparency guidelines for marking, authenticating, and detecting AI-generated content. Further, it gives the broad membership of the Television Academy the ability to control their voice, likeness, and creative expressions, and give content owners the ability to pursue recourse if their content is used without permission. The Television Academy looks forward to helping get the COPIED Act adopted.” – Maury McIntyre, President and CEO

    NewsGuild-CWA

“Journalists are essential to a free and fair democracy. Too many media companies are attempting to replace journalists with AI, resulting in false, misleading clickbait and the decimation of our news ecosystems. It is essential that journalists are not replaced by misguided media companies looking to maximize profits at the expense of human-driven journalism that informs the public and holds our institutions accountable. We thank Senator Cantwell for her leadership on ensuring fair and equitable use of Artificial Intelligence that puts the worker and their rights at the center of the deployment of this new technology.” – Jon Schleuss, President

    News/Media Alliance

“The News/Media Alliance, representing over 2200 news, magazine, and digital media publishers worldwide, applauds the leadership of Senators Cantwell, Blackburn and Heinrich to address the need for AI regulation. We look forward to working with them to refine and advance this critical legislation to ensure news publishers and creators of quality content are adequately protected. Legislation should balance the innovation around these emerging technologies with preserving quality, accuracy, and a thriving free press, and Senators Cantwell, Blackburn and Heinrich have taken a major step forward to accomplish that by introducing this bill.” – Danielle Coffey, President and CEO

    National Newspaper Association
“We appreciate Senator Cantwell for taking on this difficult and disturbing issue. Deepfakes fly in the face of the true intent of the First Amendment. It’s important that citizens continue to trust local news sources to bring them quality journalism that has been vetted and verified.” – John Galer, Chair, National Newspaper Association Board of Directors; Publisher of The Journal-News in Hillsboro, IL

    America’s Newspapers

“America’s Newspapers, the trade association representing more than 1,500 local community newspapers, commends Senator Maria Cantwell for introducing legislation that addresses the emerging problem of deepfakes. It is critical to our democracy that news organizations provide their communities with trusted information and news. The issue of deepfakes must be addressed to maintain consumer confidence in news providers. We look forward to working with Sen. Cantwell on this important legislation.” – Dean Ridings, CEO

    Rebuild Local News
“The proliferation of deepfakes is an enormous problem that’s going to get much worse if lawmakers and regulators don’t act. This will be particularly dangerous when it comes to residents getting information about their local communities because the collapse of local news has left us with fewer journalistic watchdogs. We commend Senator Cantwell for shining a spotlight on this issue and we look forward to working with her to devise appropriate policies in this complex area.” – Steven Waldman, President

    National Association of Broadcasters

“Deepfakes pose a significant threat to the integrity of broadcasters’ trusted journalism,” said NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt. “We are grateful to Ranking Member Cantwell and Sens. Blackburn and Heinrich for reintroducing this bill to protect the authenticity of the vital local and national news that radio and television stations provide our communities. We also applaud efforts to prohibit the use of broadcasters’ news content to train generative AI systems without express consent and compensation to the news creator. We look forward to working with the committee to help advance this bill and these fundamental principles critical to our ability to continue serving communities with trusted news.” – Curtis LeGeyt, President and CEO

    Artist Rights Alliance

“The Artist Rights Alliance (ARA) applauds Senator Cantwell for introducing legislation to combat deception and confusion in the AI marketplace and protect artists from the unauthorized and unethical use of AI. As AI technology continues to evolve at breakneck speed, we must ensure that creators do not fall victim to deepfakes and other abuses of their very personhood. ARA is grateful for Senator Cantwell’s commitment to building a framework for responsible AI that is grounded in the fundamental principles of transparency and choice.” – Jen Jacobsen, Executive Director

    Human Artistry Campaign
“Deepfakes pose an existential threat to our culture and society, making it hard to believe what we see and hear and leaving individual creators vulnerable as tech companies use our art without consent while AI-generated content leads to confusion about what is real. Requiring transparency is a meaningful step that will help protect us all – ensuring that nonconsensual, harmful content can be removed quickly and providing a clear origin when our life’s work has been used.” – Dr. Moiya McTier, Senior Advisor

    Public Citizen

“Public Citizen strongly believes that every person has a right to know when they are seeing, hearing or engaging with AI-generated content.  This is critical for the purposes of maintaining social trust in our society. A poll found that 79 percent of people polled worry the information they are seeing online is fake or meant to confuse. Senator Cantwell’s Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act of 2025 is an important step towards safeguarding truth and trust in the AI age. This legislation addresses key issues surrounding deepfakes and AI-generated media by directing NIST to develop robust standards for detecting and labeling synthetic content and promotes provenance protections for AI generated content. If passed, this bill would promote online transparency and ethical AI use, which is desperately needed in today’s online ecosystem.” – Richard Anthony, Emerging Technologies Policy Advocate

The Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL), the Songwriters Guild of America (SGA), and Music Creators North America (MCNA)

“The Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL), the Songwriters Guild of America (SGA), and Music Creators North America (MCNA) applaud Senator Cantwell for initiating a crucial, beginning step towards addressing the myriad of existential threats to the American songwriter and composer community posed by unregulated generative artificial intelligence.  As the leading organizational representatives for America’s music creators, our independent groups represent many thousands of composers and songwriters, solely. We formulate our policy positions without undue outside influence from third parties, and we extend our enthusiastic support for introduction of the proposed bill.  The urgent need to require all generative AI users to deal transparently and fairly with the creative community cannot be overstated, and we look forward to working with Senator Cantwell’s office in addressing these and the many other challenges and opportunities provided by GenAI technologies in the immediate future.” – Ashley Irwin, SCL President & MCNA co-chair

arlier today, Governor Kathy Hochul met in her Albany office with domestic violence survivors to discuss New York’s discovery laws.

VIDEO: The event is available to stream on YouTube here and TV quality video is available here (h.264, mp4).

AUDIO: The Governor’s remarks are available in audio form here.

PHOTOS: The Governor’s Flickr page has photos of the event here.

A rush transcript of the Governor’s remarks is available below:

Governor Hochul: Hello, everyone. I just had a really powerful, impactful conversation with our sisters in purple. These are women who’ve risen above their circumstances. Women who’ve been traumatized by domestic violence. But they’re not victims, they’re survivors. And because they were willing to come up here and tell their stories of how so many cases, brought by women who have the courage to step out of their home and go to a police precinct or a DA’s office and tell their stories and to bear their hearts and relive the trauma over and over — they’re willing to do that to stop the abusers from hurting them or their children. And then too many times, those cases end in dismissal because the rigid discovery laws that we have in place right now denied them justice.

They’re here to use their voices to lift up, not just themselves, but to thousands of women and some men across the state whose voices have been silent until now. I told them, I will be their voice. I will be their champion, I will be their advocate, but also their stories themselves are just extraordinary.

And I want to ask Angelina just to share what you described to me as some of the barriers that you have when it comes to cases like the one you endured. So Angelina?

Angelina Rosado, Domestic Violence Survivor: Yes, absolutely. Thank you, Governor. I think our message that we want to get across is that we’re not against the other side, right?

The facts are we are all on the same team. But we want to make sure that the demographics of victims are not left out of the conversation. For too often, survivors have not been invited to the table to have our voices be heard. Survivors are no longer staying silent. We will not cowardly walk away from this.

And we appreciate the Governor putting her foot down and saying, “We have to make a stance right now, because too often, survivors of domestic violence, victims, are now turning into homicide victims.” And all because an order of protection may or may not get dropped due to the fact that a piece of evidence that may not even be relevant to what’s happening, wasn’t present at the time.

And we all know that getting a survivor to even admit out of their mouths that they are survivors of domestic violence. I know for myself personally, it took me over six months to say I was a victim of domestic violence. It felt like lava coming out of my mouth because I couldn’t believe that I was a victim of anything. And this is something that we experience every single day.

Survivors of domestic violence have to go to police precincts. We have to go to the courthouse, get an order of protection, and what does that look like? In court, we don’t argue feelings. We argue language. So I’m here to put that feeling to you in person, right?

Because the feeling of going into a precinct and not being believed is something that runs in our heads because mental and emotional abuse is serious, right? And when you are in a home with someone who has convinced you that no one cares about you, and they are the Alpha and the Omega, that becomes a problem when we’re now seeking for justice. Because survivors, not only do they have to take all these steps and there’s so many different systems that get involved the minute they decide to take this step. And then could you imagine being told, “Well, we didn’t have your Uber receipt, so your case was dismissed and now your order of protection is dropped.”

Could you imagine the feeling? We are here to show we are the faces of things in that nature that can happen to you. And we want the other side to understand we’re all on the same team. We want to figure out, how do we balance this out? How do we make sure that while we are still protecting the people who are wrongfully convicted, we also protect the people who are trying to get protection from that same system? Thank you.

Governor Hochul: Thank you. I know that’s hard. Well, you heard from one individual and she represents so many thousands. And listening to their stories a little while ago here in my office, I was also reminded of my mother’s story. My mother became a champion for victims of domestic violence because of what she saw and endured in her own home as a child.

And instead of living the life of a victim, she led it as a proud survivor. The survivor of what she saw happened to her own mother, and she channeled that into advocacy. And back in the 1970s when no one talked about spousal abuse — wife beaters, but people took their sides more often than not.

My mother, inexperienced in the whole world of advocacy, just like these women were at one time, came to this capitol and raised up her voice when I was just a college student. And she told what happened to her mother, and she became a voice for so many and helped open a transitional home for survivors of domestic violence. So their stories really touch a nerve with me. And I’m told I have the empathy of my mother.

Angelina Rosado, Domestic Violence Survivor: Yes.

Governor Hochul: When you said that, you said, “I see the empathy that you must have gotten from your mother, because I understand them.” And I know how hard it is today to even come up here, travel up on a train, disrupt their lives and have to walk the halls in search of someone who understands what we’re fighting for. And I’m really proud to be fighting on their behalf, and people all over this state who are denied the justice because of some technicality in the discovery laws that are written out. And they put their heart and soul into trying to get justice and it’s thrown out because something minor, irrelevant, is missing — I’m going to keep fighting until we fix this. I’m going to keep fighting to put this in the Budget.

This is my path to getting this done and I’ll always remember the faces and the voices of these brave women, and thank them for what they’ve done. We are going to continue this fight. We’re going to continue fighting, not just for public safety, but also affordability, to make sure that we can put more money back in people’s pockets at this time when people are just — their heads are spinning. They don’t know if these tariffs are going to make the next time they go to the store — the kids’ sneakers made in China are going to be 10 times more than they expected.

So families are struggling, and shame on us if we can’t put this budget to bed and focus on the needs of the people of the state who put us in these jobs.

So thank you so much. Thank you again for being here.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ricketts Calls on Xi Jinping, CCP to Allow TikTok Sale: “We Need to Keep the Pressure On”

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Pete Ricketts (Nebraska)
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday on the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) called on the Chinese Communist Party to allow ByteDance to sell TikTok to American owners. Ricketts made the comments while objecting to a unanimous consent request from U.S. Senator Edward Markey (D-MA) to extend the deadline for a potential sale.
“ByteDance was given 270 days to make a deal,” said Ricketts. “The Communist dictator Xi Jinping clearly did not want it. They tried to lobby us. They avoided getting a deal done. President Trump came into office. They are still avoiding getting a deal done.”
“The law is very clear. TikTok needs to be sold to an American owner to continue operation,” closed Ricketts. “Not some half-baked plan, as my colleague from Arkansas was describing, where the Chinese Communist Party would still have influence on the TikTok algorithm, still have the ability to push their propaganda to the American people. That cannot happen. We need to make sure that the Chinese Communist Party cannot do that in our country again. We won’t allow other TV or radio stations to have that much access. Why on earth are we doing it for the Chinese Communist Party? It is absolutely ludicrous. We need to keep the pressure on. We need to make sure that TikTok is sold.”

    TRANSCRIPT:
Senator Ricketts: “Mr. President, reserving the right to object.
“I echo my colleague from Arkansas comments with regard to TikTok.
“Let’s recall that in Communist China, there really isn’t such a thing as a private company, as much as ByteDance might want to say it is.
“Chinese Communist law is very clear that companies in China have to do what they’re told to do by the Chinese Communist Party.
“And that’s one of the reasons TikTok is so dangerous.
“TikTok, as has been covered by my colleague from Massachusetts, reaches 170 million people.
“52% of those people say that they regularly get their news from TikTok.
“As I’ve risen on this floor in the past, I’ve discussed specific cases where the Chinese Communists have been pushing their propaganda through TikTok.
“Now let’s also bear in mind that we would not allow any American TV news station, even newspaper, to be able to own as much of the American marketplace as TikTok has today.
    “170 million people.
“Current law says that you can only own 39%, for example, of the TV marketplace across the country.
“That would roughly equate to about 50 million households in the United States – far above what we’re seeing here with what TikTok has access to.
“So if we’re not going to allow Americans to be able to have such broad access to our population, why on earth would we allow the Chinese Communist Party to do it?
“And by the way, the way, the Chinese Communist Party has no First Amendment rights in this country.
“ByteDance was given 270 days to make a deal.
“The Communist dictator Xi Jinping clearly did not want it.
“They tried to lobby us. They avoided getting a deal done.
    “President Trump came into office.
“They are still avoiding getting a deal done.
“The people who are taking on the liability here are the companies that are facilitating this.
“I urge those companies to reconsider.
“You should think carefully about what you’re doing.
    “The law is very clear.
“TikTok needs to be sold to an American owner to continue operation.
“Not some half-baked plan, as my colleague from Arkansas was describing, where the Chinese Communist Party would still have influence on the TikTok algorithm, still have the ability to push their propaganda to the American people.
    “That cannot happen.
“We need to make sure that the Chinese Communist Party cannot do that in our country again.
“We won’t allow other TV or radio stations to have that much access.
“Why on earth are we doing it for the Chinese Communist Party?
    “It is absolutely ludicrous.
“We need to keep the pressure on.
“We need to make sure that TikTok is sold.
“I echo my colleague’s comments with regard to any sort of future Chinese ownership that would allow them to be able to continue to do this.
“We need to make sure that this is no longer going to threaten our young people.
“And therefore, Mr. President, I object.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Kennedy, Booker reintroduce bipartisan bill to combat animal fighting and trafficking

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator John Kennedy (Louisiana)
WASHINGTON – Sens. John Kennedy (R-La.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) today reintroduced the Fighting Inhumane Gambling and High-Risk Animal Trafficking (FIGHT) Act to enhance national animal fighting laws by providing more tools to law enforcement and citizens to curtail cockfighting and dogfighting.
“Those engaging in dog and cock fights are abusive, organized and dangerous—and their heinous behavior must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. It’s illegal to abuse God’s creatures for sport, and this bill would give law enforcement crucial tools to end this cruel practice,” said Kennedy.
“Animal fighting is cruel, illegal, and unacceptable. It’s time we take stronger action to stop these heinous abuses against animals and protect them from being exploited for entertainment and profit. This bill will tighten enforcement to put a stop to illegal animal fighting,” said Booker.
Despite being criminalized, cockfighting and dogfighting are still common across the country. Cockfights can become hubs of violence because of the illegal activity that often accompanies them.
Cockfighting may also pose a danger to public health during the ongoing avian influenza outbreak, as people who handle bloodied birds risk becoming infected by them.
The FIGHT Act would amend Section 26 of the Animal Welfare Act to strengthen and enhance enforcement against animal fighting. This bill would:
Ban simulcasting and gambling on animal fights in the U.S., no matter where the broadcast signals for dogfights and cockfights originate.
Halt shipments of mature roosters (chickens only) shipped through U.S. mail. This legislation does not address shipments of baby chicks, which are used in accepted agricultural operations. Shipping dogs through the mail is already illegal.
Creates a citizen suit provision allowing private right of action against illegal animal fighters and ease the resource burden on federal agencies.
Enhances forfeiture provisions to include real property used in the commission of an animal fighting crime.
The full bill text of the FIGHT Act is available here.
