  • MIL-OSI: NSFW AI Role Play Chatbot with Multisensory Features Unveiled by JuicyChat.AI

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

NEW YORK, March 28, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — JuicyChat.AI has launched its next-generation NSFW AI Role Play Chatbot, blending AI-generated visuals, voice synthesis, and advanced memory tools to elevate interactive storytelling. The platform, designed for immersive narrative creation, now leads the niche NSFW AI Chat market with its 2025 updates.

Dynamic Media Integration in NSFW AI Role Play

The NSFW AI Role Play Chatbot uses state-of-the-art LLMs to generate real-time images and audible dialogue during chats. Users can prompt scene-specific artwork or customize character voices to mirror evolving storylines. For instance, a sci-fi narrative might auto-generate concept art of alien worlds while producing synthetic voices tailored to a robot persona’s personality.

“We’re merging text, sound, and visuals to create living stories,” said JuicyChat.AI’s CTO. “The AI adjusts outputs based on pacing—subtle whispers for drama, booming tones for action.”

Presona Card: Precision-Built Role Play Profiles

A revamped Presona Card system lets users craft detailed character profiles, including backstories, quirks, and relationship dynamics. The new Pin Memory feature bookmarks pivotal interactions, transforming cards into personalized “memory diaries” that retain plot twists and emotional beats. Enhanced context memory ensures bots recall even minor details, like a character’s favorite weapon or a hidden grudge, deepening role play immersion.

Beta testers report 82% higher narrative consistency compared to older tools, with cards spanning genres from noir detectives to mythical creatures.

    Creator-First NSFW AI Chat Ecosystem

JuicyChat.AI has attracted many of well-known creators, who specialize in NSFW AI Role Play Chatbot content and create more than 100k bots. These creators leverage Presona Cards to design original characters, share script templates, and build interconnected story universes.

Secure, Scalable NSFW AI Chat Access

All chats are end-to-end encrypted. The website has memberships of different prices to choose from, providing personalized services. Recent server upgrades reduce latency to 0.1 seconds during peak traffic.

Analysts credit JuicyChat.AI’s dominance to its hybrid focus on creativity and discretion, a gap in the broader NSFW AI Chat landscape.

Explore the NSFW AI Role Play Chatbot at JuicyChat.AI, where stories unfold through words, voices, and visuals.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: New 1,500-place prison opens as government grips crisis

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    Press release

New 1,500-place prison opens as government grips crisis

“Public safety must never be put at risk again by the failure to have enough prison places”, Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood said as she opened a new nearly 1,500-place prison in Yorkshire.

    • Major milestone in plan for 14,000 more prison places nationwide by 2031

    • New prison designed to cut crime and get offenders into work

    • Part of government’s Plan for Change to create safer streets

HMP Millsike is the first of four new jails to be built as part of the Plan for Change to create 14,000 extra prison places by 2031. This extra capacity will help put more violent offenders behind bars, make streets safer and ensure the country never runs out of cells again.

Last summer, the government inherited a prisons system days away from collapse which would have left police unable to take dangerous criminals off the streets.

Ms Mahmood said the opening marked another milestone in her work to get a grip of the prisons crisis that has dominated her first nine months in post.

As a Category C prison, HMP Millsike has been designed with a clear aim – cutting crime. It includes 24 workshops and training facilities aimed at getting offenders into work on release and away from crime for good so fewer people become victims in the future.

Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Shabana Mahmood, said:

This Government is fixing the broken prison system we inherited, delivering the cells needed to take the most dangerous criminals off our streets.

HMP Millsike sets the standard for the jails of the future, with cutting crime built into its very fabric. It is a huge step in our plan to add 14,000 extra prison places by 2031.

But building jails only takes us so far in ending this crisis, which is why we’re also reviewing sentencing so we can always lock up dangerous offenders and make our streets safer.

The prison is the size of 39 football pitches and comes fitted top-to-bottom with security technology to combat the drugs, drones and phones that have plagued prisons in recent years and risked the safety of frontline officers.

This includes reinforced barless windows to deter drone activity, hundreds of CCTV cameras, and X-ray body scanners to spot and stop contraband entering the prison.

The prison will be operated by Mitie Care and Custody and will have education and workplace training provider PeoplePlus on site to give offenders the tools they need to find work on release and stay on the straight and narrow.

The construction of the prison alone generated nearly 800 jobs and around 600 will be created now it is in full operation, providing an economic boost to Yorkshire.

With the country still using many of its Victorian prisons, HMP Millsike has been built to also stand the test of time. Its use of modern materials and fittings will keep running and repairs costs to a minimum for taxpayers.

Russell Trent, Managing Director, Mitie Care & Custody said:

We are a proud partner to the MoJ, focused on building safer communities.

As a resettlement prison, our focus is on rehabilitation and restoration centred on future orientation to break the cycle of reoffending. We want our prisoners to leave HMP Millsike qualified, employable and equipped for life in the outside world. Everything from the building design to the technology, education and training opportunities has been engineered to create an environment where people leave ready to integrate and contribute to society.

Stuart Togwell, group managing director at Kier Construction said:

Using our significant experience in the justice sector, Kier has delivered a state-of-the-art, carbon-efficient facility designed to support rehabilitation, which has also provided new jobs, economic investment and skills development for the surrounding communities.

HMP Millsike supports the government’s commitment to increasing prison capacity and reducing reoffending, and joins our growing portfolio of prison redevelopment and build projects awarded in recent years.

Its opening is a major milestone in the government’s 10-year prison capacity strategy published in December. This plan includes 6,400 places through new houseblocks and 6,500 places via new prisons. One thousand rapid deployment cells will be rolled out across the estate while more than 1,000 existing cells will be refurbished.

The government started the 700-place expansion at HMP Highpoint in Suffolk earlier this month, and a new houseblock providing nearly 460 places at HMP Rye Hill in Northamptonshire recently received its first prisoners.

It follows a £2.3 billion investment to deliver these prison builds, with a further £500 million going towards vital building maintenance across prisons and the probation service. The strategy will work alongside the Independent Sentencing Review to ensure the most serious offenders can always be sent to prison to protect the public.

    Background information

    • Situated on land next to the existing HMP Full Sutton, HMP Millsike has been named after Millsike Beck, a local stream that runs adjacent to the new jail, firmly embedding the prison into its local community.
    • The MoJ has produced a short documentary, Building a Prison: Inside HMP Millsike, which offers an exclusive look at the final stages of building the new prison. The documentary is available to watch on MoJ’s YouTube Channel.

Mayoral Youth Initiative invitation widened to include all generations

    28 March 2025

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s hugely successful ‘Our Guildhall, Our Space’ events, where young people from across the Council area have come together to enjoy a night of music and entertainment, is being extended next month to include their parents, grandparents and family members and older adults from across the Council area as part of a wider Intergenerational Celebration of Youth.

Mayor Cllr Lilian Seenoi Barr says she wants to make the Youth Initiative event even more inclusive with an invitation to older persons across the Council area to come along and join in the celebration of young people. The next ‘Our Guildhall, Our Space’ event is scheduled to take place at the Guildhall on Saturday, 12 April, from 6pm to 9.30pm and young people registering to attend are being encouraged to bring their parents, grandparents or any family members. An invitation is also being extended to older persons groups across the Council area who want to be part of this unique celebration.

Mayor Barr said: “I want this to be an intergenerational celebration of young people in our Council area and for people of all generations to join together for a fantastic night of music, games and food at the Guildhall. I have been hosting this youth initiative during my Mayoral year and it has been a huge success. The young people involved really love it and have been so positive about the experience that I wanted to give others the opportunity to be part of this unique experience.”

The night promises to be fantastic night of entertainment and music for everyone with live performances from local music legend Ritchie Remo, fun, games and entertainment with comedian and entertainer Fabu D aka The Black Paddy alongside the opportunity to dance the night away with Q Radio’s Tyree Patton on the decks, taking requests. On top of all that there will be delicious food served!

The event is open to young people between the age groups of 12 and 20 years of age, their parents, grandparents or family members and to older persons groups across the Council area.

Encouraging people to sign up, Mayor Cllr Lilian Seenoi Barr said next Saturday’s event is a unique celebration of young and old coming together to share the joy of laughter and music in the historic setting of the Guildhall.

“I want to invite parents and adults across our council area to meet with young people, encourage them, and explore ways to support their growth in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

“Our young people need role models, and who better to guide, nurture, and inspire them than members of our own community? They are facing challenges that are very different from what many of us experienced growing up. I want them to build resilience, grow in confidence, and believe in their ability to thrive right here in our city and district

“This intergenerational event is all about bridging the gap between young people and adults. It’s a chance to engage in open discussions, learn from one another, and most importantly, have fun together. Let’s show them that they’re not alone, and that we, as a community, are here to support them every step of the way.”

The Mayor added that the ‘Our Guildhall, Our Space’ events also demonstrate the commitment by Council that decision makers at all levels in the district are making to young people on the journey towards UNICEF UK Child Friendly Community Status.

It also coincides with the Council’s support for Intergenerational week which is 24th April to 30th April when the Council offices on Strand Road and the Alley Theatre in Strabane will be lit up Pink.

The event on Saturday 12th April is the second last in the series with the final one scheduled to take place on 17th May.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Minister Peacock speech at Youth Select Committee report launch

    Speech

Minister Peacock speech at Youth Select Committee report launch

The Minister for Civil Society and Youth’s speech at the report launch for the Youth Select Committee inquiry on Youth Violence and Social Media.

Good afternoon everyone. I’m absolutely delighted to be here.

I’m the Minister for Youth working in the DCMS. We are the lead department for out of school provision.

What really strikes me about all the work you do and the things you talk about in this report is that they are cross-Government. You’ll know that this Government has taken a mission based approach and we want to work across Government to get things done.

I’m really grateful for all the efforts that have gone into this and the months of hard work. I know you had some of my colleagues in front of you and I look forward to reading this report in detail.

It comes at a very timely moment because there’s been a national debate with Adolescence on Netflix which has shone a light on just how devastating and complex some of these issues can be.

So I really do welcome the challenge provided by the report and I want to say very clearly that we want to listen to young people.

But not just listen but put young people at the heard of decision making.

So this also comes at a timely moment because we’ve launched our National Youth Strategy and we are in the middle of that engagement.

There are lots of ways people can get involved. I did an event in my own constituency in Barnsley last week where I spoke to the Barnsley Youth Council and answered lots of their questions.

I know they are going to be doing a particular event just on the Strategy which is fantastic, and there will be lots of groups like that. I would really encourage you as leaders of your communities to get involved in this.

We are very clear that wherever you are from, whatever your postcode, whether you are engaged in a youth organisation or not, we want to hear from you.

That’s why we launched our digital postcards. It is designed so you can do it on paper or on your phone or computer.

And it is one idea you have for the Government, one thing you would like to see changed, so that hopefully everybody can have an input into our Youth Strategy.

We will be publishing it in the summer and we want to work cross-party. We appreciate there are issues that affect young people; you want the same access to healthcare, you want to liaise with public services. Whatever it is, it is important that we as a Government listen to young people.

I look forward to reading the report and want to thank all everyone that has been involved: the NYA, Parliamentary Clerks and all of you. Hopefully it will lead to change.

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

All amounts presented are in U.S. Dollars (“USD”) unless otherwise stated.

CALGARY, Alberta, March 28, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Enerflex Ltd. (TSX: EFX) (NYSE: EFXT) (“Enerflex” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce that the Toronto Stock Exchange (the “TSX”) has approved its application to implement a normal course issuer bid (“NCIB”) for a portion of its common shares (“Common Shares”).

Enerflex believes that: (1) the repurchase of Common Shares would be an effective use of its cash resources and in the best interests of Enerflex and its shareholders; (2) that the current market price of its Common Shares does not fully reflect their underlying value; and (3) that current market conditions provide opportunities for the Company to acquire Common Shares at attractive prices.

Pursuant to the NCIB notice filed with and accepted by the TSX, the Company has been authorized to acquire up to a maximum of 6,159,695 Common Shares, or approximately 5% of the public float as of March 18, 2025, for cancelation. As of March 18, 2025, Enerflex had 124,150,067 Common Shares issued and outstanding and a public float of 123,193,902 Common Shares.

The NCIB will commence on April 1, 2025 and will terminate no later than March 31, 2026. Purchases under the NCIB will be made in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements through the facilities of the TSX, the New York Stock Exchange (the “NYSE”), other designated exchanges and/or alternative trading systems in Canada or the United States or by such other means as may be permitted by the applicable securities regulator at a price per Common Share representative of the market price at the time of acquisition.

The number of Common Shares that can be purchased pursuant to the NCIB is subject to a current daily maximum of 109,475 Common Shares (which is equal to 25% of the average daily trading volume on the TSX of 437,902 Common Shares for the six full calendar months ended January 31, 2025), subject to the Company’s ability to make one block purchase of Common Shares per calendar week that exceeds such limits. The price per Common Share will be based on the market price of such shares at the time of purchase in accordance with regulatory requirements and all Common Shares purchased under the NCIB will be canceled upon their purchase. The Company intends to fund the purchases out of its available resources.

The Company has entered into an automatic share purchase plan (“ASPP”) with its designated broker. Such purchases will be determined by the broker at its sole discretion, based on the purchasing parameters set out by the Company in accordance with the rules of the TSX, applicable securities laws and the terms of the ASPP.

The ASPP will terminate on the earliest of the date on which: (i) the NCIB expires; (ii) the maximum number of Common Shares have been purchased under the NCIB; and (iii) the Company terminates the ASPP in accordance with its terms. Concurrent with the establishment of the ASPP, the Company has confirmed to the broker that it was then not aware of any material undisclosed or non-public information with respect to the Company or any securities of the Company. During the term of the ASPP, the Company will not communicate any material undisclosed or non-public information to the trading staff of the broker; accordingly, the broker may make purchases regardless of whether a trading blackout period is in effect or whether there is material undisclosed or non-public information about the Company at the time that purchases are made under the ASPP. If the ASPP is materially varied, suspended or terminated, the Company will issue a news release advising of such variation, suspension or termination, as applicable.

And the second main award went to the Polytechnicians – the artistic director of “Polyhymnia” Anna Podgornova received the title of “Best Conductor”. Anna herself began singing in “Polyhymnia”, graduated from the IPMET SPbPU, then the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Music College in the specialty “Choral Conducting”, and is now studying at the St. Petersburg State University of Culture.

“I am delighted that our students and graduates who chose a profession not related to music are able to devote themselves to it so much and show high results,” shared Anna Podgornova. “The guys put so much work, time, and emotion into this victory that for me they would have been winners even without the Grand Prix. I am incredibly happy that our future will be built by these goal-oriented, strong, talented, and caring people!”

These victories are very significant for the university. It is no coincidence that SPbPU is gathering its student community for the ninth time for the choir competition “Blagovest”. Choirs and ensembles from 15 Russian universities will gather at the Polytechnic University on April 4-6 to demonstrate the unifying power of music.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Tall Ships anthem gets big ‘Aye Aye’ at maiden recital

Source: Scotland – City of Aberdeen

The official Aberdeen anthem for this summer’s much-anticipated Tall Ships spectacular was given its premiere yesterday (Thursday 27 March) to great acclaim.

In another first for The Tall Ships Races, the event’s official mascot – Dorry the Dolphin – made a debut appearance at the special lunchtime concert in Aberdeen Art Gallery’s Cowdray Hall.

Primary 4 pupils from Abbotswell School sang ‘The Sea Journey’ l to an audience of 150, including composer Clara-Jane Maunder who wrote the piece for the Aberdeen City Council Music Service pupils to celebrate the Tall Ships return to the city.

Clara-Jane, a former Music Service pupil who went on to study at Aberdeen University and is now an emerging professional composer was delighted with her composition’s public debut which named familiar Aberdeen landmarks.

She said: “It has been a real delight to work on this commission for Aberdeen City Music service over the past couple of months, and it has been even more wonderful to hear it performed in such a beautiful and enthusiastic way by pupils from Abbotswell Primary School.”

I benefitted hugely from the Music Service’s instrumental tuition, ensembles, and orchestras as a young person, so this has been an absolute full-circle moment. It has been truly wonderful to have the opportunity to write for the next generation of young creatives, inspired by the city I grew up in.

“‘A Sea Journey’ follows the journey of a sailor (maybe from this century, or maybe from long ago) as they return to Aberdeen after a long time at sea, continuing with them past familiar parts of Aberdeen’s coastline until they arrive home to the Granite City.).

Clara-Jane’s delight was shared by Councillor Martin Greig, Chair of the Tall Ships Organising Committee, who said: “It was a pleasure to be here today on such a joyful occasion.

“The pupils gave a wonderful performance of Clara-Jane’s stirring composition which will be a real symbol of the Tall Ships and our great maritime city. The song will be a splendid long lasting legacy of this year’s Tall Ships experience. Joining in with the words and music is a great way to share in the celebrations and the fun.”

The piece has been written as a flexi score which means that it can be performed by different combinations of musicians such as a full orchestra and choir, or sung by a soloist and string quartet. This allows the piece to be used as much as possible in different settings including not only the Tall Ships festival but also  the forthcoming Big Sing 2025.

Also among the captivated audience were Bob Sanguinetti, CEO, Port of Aberdeen and Adrian Watson, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Inspired. Mr Sanguinetti said: “I’m thrilled to have been part of this memorable occasion today. The students showcased an outstanding performance of Clara-Jane’s captivating composition, which perfectly embodies the essence of the Tall Ships and reflects the rich maritime spirit of our city. This remarkable piece will leave a lasting impression, serving as a wonderful reminder of this year’s Tall Ships event.”

Mr Watson said was also charmed by the pupil’s performance, saying: “It was a magical moment to hear the talented pupils of Abbotswell School give this moving piece of music its premiere.

“This might be the first time we have heard Clara-Jane’s soaring work, The Sea Journey, but it won’t be the last. I am sure this enchanting composition will become a much-loved and oft-performed anthem for The Tall Ships Races Aberdeen.

“Today was very much about firsts for The Tall Ships Races, with Dorry the Dolphin’s debut appearance making a splash at the concert. Such a fun and loveable mascot for the Tall Ships, Dorry will become a familiar sight on city streets in the weeks to come.”

Aberdeen Sinfonietta is premiering Clara-Jane’s second Tall Ships piece “The Coast” on 18 May at The Music Hall concert on maritime-related orchestral music.

Meanwhile, Dorry will be popping up around the city over the coming weeks at the Bucksburn Community Council Event, Peterculter Gala, Big Belmont Bash and Aberdeen Highland Games.

Source: Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University – Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University –

The Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University celebrated the holiday of Navruz, a festive welcome to spring filled with cultural exchange, friendship and hospitality.

Navruz is one of the oldest holidays, symbolizing the arrival of spring and the renewal of nature. On this day, Polytechnic students from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan presented the traditions of their peoples.

Navruz at the Polytechnic University was a special event for me – this is my first experience as an organizer, and I am glad that I was able to make my contribution. It was incredibly pleasant to see how students from different countries unite, share their traditions and create an atmosphere of real spring renewal. This experience gave me not only new knowledge, but also confidence that together we can create even more bright and significant events! – said Begench Mukhammedov, a second-year student in the Jurisprudence program.

Guests of the festival saw national performances, heard poetry and musical numbers, enjoyed live performances of folk songs. Enchanting traditional dances conveyed the atmosphere of spring, and the exhibition of national culture allowed to get to know the traditions of different countries better. The evening ended with a heartfelt tea party, where participants were able to communicate and exchange impressions.

The organizers express their sincere gratitude to the Director of the Humanitarian Institute Natalia Chicherina and the Assistant Vice-Rector for International Affairs Pavel Nedelko for their support and contribution to the celebration.

Navruz at the Polytechnic is not just an event, but a good tradition that unites students of different nationalities and creates an atmosphere of friendship, respect and cultural exchange.

A vibrant cultural exchange event titled “The Night of Lights” was hosted in a Beijing cultural space on March 23, bringing together diplomats, students and business professionals from Pakistan, Tunisia, Morocco, Türkiye and other countries. The gathering, centered on themes of “unity and inclusion,” created a warm atmosphere for cross-cultural dialogue through culinary delights, traditional attire and artistic performances.
The evening buzzed with intercultural energy as participants sampled international delicacies like Pakistani samosas, Moroccan harira soup and Argentine madeleine cakes. Many of the attendees dressed in colorful national costumes, exchanging stories about their home countries and sharing their experiences of living in China.
Safaa Merzane, a Moroccan student at Capital University of Economics and Business, has developed a deep appreciation for Chinese cuisine during her year and a half in the country. When asked about her most memorable cultural experience in China, she enthused: “The first idea that comes to my mind is the Chinese food. When I try spicy food, I think it’s so delicious!”

Hina Shaikh, a teacher at the Pakistan Embassy College in Beijing, expressed her delight in participating. “There are many different foods, culture traditions and cultural performances I see today,” Shaikh remarked. “That has really amused me how people interact with each other, how they respect each other’s culture. And I feel very happy when I’m a part of such an event.” She particularly noted the eagerness of the young performers to showcase their cultural heritage through dance, music and traditional dress.
Shaikh, who regularly participates in cultural activities through her work, added: “The students of the college are normally taking part in many cultural programs. Even in our college, there are lots of Chinese students come to perform. And we have culture programs.” In her opinion, these events act as vital bridges fostering international understanding and friendship.
Tunisian students Sirin Jridi and Khaoula Louhichi from Minzu University of China enthusiastically shared their perspectives on China’s inclusive cultural environment. “I came to this event at my friend’s invitation,” Jridi explained. “We try to showcase our traditional clothes and some of our food and introduce them to a lot of nationalities. Of course, we have tried other people’s food and we really like it. We are willing to have more of this kind of events to participate in.”

Louhichi also described how her understanding of Chinese society has transformed: “I used to think that Chinese people are cold. But when I came here, I just figured out it was totally wrong. I felt like really welcomed here.” She expressed admiration for China’s social harmony, where 56 ethnic groups coexist peacefully. “They’re all living in peace here, and Chinese culture is really immense. I really like it here. Chinese people are also very proud of their culture.”
Louhichi credited Chinese government scholarships for enabling international students to experience the country firsthand. “Thanks to the scholarship that the Chinese government gives to other students, many people can come to China and experience the real China,” she said.
She also praised China’s academic initiatives promoting cultural exchange. “Many universities host ‘cultural days’ during which students from all over the world will have stands and they will share with others their culture. I think in China, it’s so convenient to know other people’s culture,” she said.

The event ended on a hopeful note, as participants called for more cultural exchanges. The lively gathering showcased how such initiatives celebrate diversity while creating genuine international bonds. As a reflection of China’s vibrant multiculturalism, it highlighted the country’s growing role in fostering cross-cultural understanding through openness and mutual respect.

The second Golden Panda Awards will be held in Chengdu, Sichuan province, in September, recognizing outstanding films and TV series while promoting the giant panda cultural brand, organizers announced on March 25.

Xie Li, a member of the organizing committee for the 2025 Golden Panda Awards and secretary of the secretariat of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, said the ceremony will take place in Chengdu on Sept. 12, 2025.

“There are 27 awards in four categories: film, TV drama, documentary and animation,” he said. “These awards cover best picture, director and screenplay, among others. The event aims to promote cross-cultural understanding through the selection of film and television works.”

Li Junchen, deputy secretary-general of the Sichuan provincial government, outlined the awards’ “3+3+1” framework, which includes three main events, three side activities, and one extension activity.

According to Li, the main events include the “Golden Panda Night” welcome, the “Golden Panda International Cultural Forum,” and the “Golden Panda Awards Ceremony.” The forum will gather politicians, scholars, and industry leaders to explore cross-cultural exchange and technology-culture integration. Winners in four categories will be announced at the awards ceremony, which will feature cultural performances.

Li also disclosed that side activities include the “See the World with Panda” international film and TV exhibition, which will promote project cooperation and exchanges, as well as the “Let’s Watch Movies Together” film panorama featuring classic works via screenings. Additionally, the “Face-to-Face with Pandas” tour will offer close encounters with giant pandas while showcasing Chinese culture.

The extension activity, “Our Panda,” invites global submissions of short videos, photos and written works featuring panda-inspired creative pieces that highlight harmony between humans and nature.

Gao Zhongwei, deputy director of the Golden Panda Awards organizing committee office and director of the executive committee office, updated the status of global submissions as of the prior day: 1,788 entries were received, comprising 71 films, 385 TV dramas, 854 documentaries and 478 animations. Of these, 1,373 entries — 77% of the total — originated from 104 countries and regions across five continents.

Eligible works are outstanding film and television productions that premiered or screened between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2025. With the submission deadline set for April 25, 2025, organizers encourage more film and television institutions and industry associations to participate, Gao said.

Organizers noted that the jury panel covers five continents, with overseas experts making up over 40% of the jurors. The panel includes internationally renowned film and television experts to ensure professional evaluations and authoritative results.

Organizers noted that the Golden Panda Awards will be market-driven, featuring enhanced industrial functions such as project incubation and copyright trading to encourage cooperation in the global film and television industry. Additionally, they plan to develop “film and television plus culture plus ecosystem” experiences based on the giant panda’s intellectual property and Sichuan’s cultural tourism resources.

The biennial Golden Panda Awards aim to uphold standards by collecting and selecting works that reflect shared human values, while facilitating cross-cultural exchanges and learning through film and television, the organizers said.

The inaugural Golden Panda Awards in 2023 drew 7,024 submissions from 104 countries and regions. Foreign entries made up 70% of submissions, and foreign works accounted for 60% of the winners, demonstrating the event’s extensive global reach.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Lawler and Colleagues Urge FEMA to Lift Pause on Nonprofit Security Grant Funding

Source: US Congressman Mike Lawler (R, NY-17)

Washington, D.C. – 3/24/2025… This week, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) joined Reps. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), Gabe Amo (RI-01), Michael McCaul (TX-10), Jared Moskowitz (FL-23), and Max Miller (OH-07) to lead a group of 78 other colleagues in a letter urging the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to reverse its decision to pause the drawdown of federal grant funding that includes the vital Nonprofit Security Grant Program.

The Nonprofit Security Grant Program provides critical funding to nonprofits at high risk of a terrorist attack, specifically faith-based institutions, and houses of worship, to enhance their physical security and provide access to training to protect communities from the growing threat of hate and violence.

“The Administration has made clear its goal to protect Americans from terrorist threats both foreign and domestic, as well as to respond to the rise in hate crimes. Supporting the NSGP is critical to fulfilling that goal. The program has long enjoyed bipartisan support, with lawmakers across the political spectrum recognizing that protecting places of worship and community institutions is not a partisan issue,” wrote the lawmakers.

“At a time when hate and violence against faith-based communities across this country are at historic levels, the NSGP has provided life-saving funding to protect faith-based communities and institutions,” the lawmakers wrote to FEMA Acting Administrator Cameron Hamilton. “From bollards to prevent vehicular attacks, reinforced doors to keep intruders out, CCTV cameras to monitor threats, and emergency alert systems that allow rapid response, the NSGP has ensured faith-based institutions are equipped with vital tools to prevent loss of life in the case of an attack. It is critical that those institutions that have already been awarded an NSGP grant are allocated the expected funding.”

“The Nonprofit Security Grant Program is a lifeline for vulnerable institutions, and ensuring the swift and efficient disbursement of these funds is essential to safeguarding communities in the face of growing threats,” said Lauren Wolman, Anti-Defamation League (ADL)’s Director of Federal Policy and Strategy. “We thank Representatives Gottheimer and Lawler for leading this bipartisan effort to ensure that as the Administration enhances oversight of FEMA grants, they remain acutely aware of the unprecedented levels of antisemitism and heightened security needs of at-risk communities.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: Ants in your house? Here’s how they get everywhere – even high up in tall buildings

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Tanya Latty, Associate Professor, School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Sydney

    Windy Soemara/Shutterstock

Ants are among nature’s greatest success stories, with an estimated 22,000 species worldwide.

Tropical Australia in particular is a global hotspot for ant diversity. Some researchers believe it could hold some of the richest ant biodiversity on the planet, with an estimated 5,000 species in the tropics alone.

But if ants are so successful out in nature, why do they so often turn up in our homes and even upper-level apartments?

And what can we do to keep them out?

There’s probably an ant near you right now

Ants dominate the planet in terms of sheer abundance.

At any given moment, there are an estimated 20 quadrillion ants alive — that’s 20 followed by 15 zeros.

In fact, for every human being, there are roughly 2.5 million ants.

There are about 22,000 ant species worldwide. This one is called the Green tree ant (Oecophylla smaragdina).
    Tanya Latty

So the short answer to “Why are there ants in my house?” is simply this: there are a lot of ants.

We live on a planet where ants outnumber us by an almost unimaginable margin. The fact that a few occasionally wander into our homes shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Ants work from home (yours, that is)

Ants owe much of their success to their highly social nature.

Within the colony, some individuals (female queens and male drones) are responsible for reproduction, while others (workers) are busy caring for the young, cleaning or foraging for food. Workers ants are always female.

Ants may start off outside but at least some will probably eventually end up inside.
    Tanya Latty

Ant colonies do not have leaders. They are an excellent example of collective behaviour and swarm intelligence, where individuals following relatively simple rules can collectively achieve far more than any individual could alone.

Just as the individual neurons in your brain can’t compose music, play football, or read articles, the brain as a whole can achieve all these feats and more.

Colonies of co-operating ants are capable of amazingly sophisticated behaviours such as:

Ants even outperform humans on some cooperative cognition tasks.

    Credit: Wonder World.

The highly social nature of ants is a big part of their success — and a key reason why they are so good at finding their way into our homes.

Each colony contains thousands of intrepid workers, many of which are constantly searching for new food sources. If even a single ant discovers a valuable resource in your home, it can quickly share that information with its nest mates.

Different ant species use different methods of communication, but the ones that most often invade our homes tend to use “pheromone trails”.

When an ant finds a food source, she returns to her nest leaving little drops of pheromones as she goes; this trail guides other ants from their nest directly to the food source.

This highly efficient communication system means a single ant can rapidly recruit thousands of its nest mates to any food it finds.

Ants may also come inside in search of water, particularly when the weather is hot.

Some species prefer to build their nests in humid environments, which might explain why they are often found in bathrooms.

I once discovered an entire colony of sugar ants nesting inside my aquarium filter! The combination of high humidity and an enclosed structure made it an ideal place to build a nest.

On the flip side, heavy rains can flood ant nests, prompting colonies to seek drier ground — sometimes leading them straight into our homes.

    Ants are incredible communicators.
    Dhe Tong/Shutterstock

I live in an upper-floor apartment. How did ants get in?

Many ant species are exceptional climbers, thanks to tiny adhesive pads and fine hairs on their feet.

These specialised structures allow ants to stick to walls and find footholds even on surfaces that appear smooth to the human eye.

Remarkably, some canopy-dwelling ants have evolved a behaviour known as “controlled descent” which protects them when they fall. By adjusting the position of their abdomens, falling ants can steer their trajectory, directing themselves back toward the tree trunk and safety.

Ants often have tiny adhesive pads and fine hairs on their feet, which help them stick to walls.
    Mob_photo/Shutterstock

How do I keep ants out of my house?

Well, good luck. No matter what you do, ants will probably enter your house at one time or another.

Finding a few ants in your home doesn’t mean your house is dirty. We simply live on a planet that is absolutely teeming with ants.

To minimise unwanted ant visits, start by eliminating any potential food sources that could feed a hungry ant.

Store all food in sealed airtight containers, clean behind the fridge and inside/under the toaster, avoid leaving pet food out longer than needed and make sure your bins are securely sealed.

Ants have tiny stomachs, so even small crumbs or the residue from spilled sugary drinks can be enough to entice them back.

If ants seem to be following each other in a line, try disrupting their chemical trail using vinegar or bleach. Be warned, however: ants are very good at repairing broken trail networks.

Seal any small cracks or entrance points that might allow ants to get into your home and make sure your windows and doors have well-fitting fly screens.

Insecticidal baits can kill ant colonies, but before you deploy the nuclear option, ask yourself: what harm are the ants really doing?

Most common home-invading ants do not sting and are pretty harmless. They can usually be redirected simply by removing their food source.

Ants are nature’s clean-up crew, tirelessly scavenging waste and helping to maintain a healthy, balanced ecosystem.

They also play important roles as predators and seed dispersers.

Before reaching for insecticides, consider whether a few ants in your house are truly a problem.

  • MIL-OSI China: Flower festival teams tradition with technology

Source: China State Council Information Office 3

With spring arriving in Shanghai and vibrant flowers blooming across the city, the annual Huazhao Festival held in the city’s Yuyuan is attracting visitors in traditional Chinese culture in a modern, dynamic way.

The flower festival, held the second month of the lunar calendar to celebrate the flower goddess’ birthday, boasts a history of over 2,000 years. According to ancient beliefs, the flower goddess controls human reproduction, and celebrating her birthday has become a custom to bring prosperity.

Running until the end of April, this year’s festival integrates traditional culture with modern technology, offering visitors a feast for the eyes and ears. Colorful light shows, parades of performers dressed as the flower goddess, and dance and musical performances are taking place at landmarks within Yuyuan, including its Central Plaza, Gold Plaza and Jiuqu (Zigzag) Bridge areas.

Decorated with floral elements, the ancient architecture and sets are transformed into stages. With advanced projection technology, the dynamic lights jump to the beat of music on building roofs and laser beams flash across the fog on the lotus pond, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

The music for the light show was tailor-made for Yuyuan by a French musical team, presenting a unique blend of East and West influences, tradition and modernity.

Against the architectural backdrop, dance and music performances feature guofeng, a Chinese style that uses traditional cultural elements. The dance performance in the Central Plaza is a reproduction of a famed painting depicting ladies with floral headdresses in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and the folk music duet in the Gold Plaza blends ancient Chinese music with modern melodies, drawing large crowds.

In addition to the innovative technologies and eye-catching shows, a slew of interactive activities are offered during the festival, particularly targeting young audiences. Working with the makeup team of Xiaohongshu (RedNote), a popular Chinese lifestyle platform, the festival includes a market offering visitors immersive experiences such as traditional makeup, fragrance sachet-making, flower hair-pinning, hair braiding, an arrow toss and poetry writing.

“We are bringing some of our beauty bloggers and vloggers to the market to share their experiences. There are many visitors from home and abroad and we want to demonstrate our Chinese traditions and culture,” says Xu Tongru from the makeup team at Xiaohongshu.

Wang Qiru, a 33-year-old makeup artist and popular makeup vlogger on the platform, was invited to the market to meet her followers and offer visitors to experience a popular makeup style from the Tang Dynasty. Becoming a makeup artist specializing in restoring ancient makeup styles in 2022, she hopes to help more audiences learn about this art form.

“Most of my clients are 20 to 35 years old, and I have seen more people paying attention to our traditional culture recently. Although it is easy to gain interest and basic knowledge of traditional culture, such as hanfu and makeup, it takes a lot of time and effort if you go deep into it,” says Wang, noting that abundant knowledge of ancient Chinese history and culture is necessary for doing such classic makeup.

Zhang Ruiqi, a 19-year-old university student in Shanghai, is one of Wang’s followers. Dressed up and doing makeup at Wang’s booth, she says she has been fond of ancient Chinese makeup since she was younger.

“I find it interesting to dig into history by restoring ancient makeup styles. At first, my interest in traditional clothing was triggered by costume dramas but when I learned about real hanfu, I felt more fascinated. It’s worth studying,” she says with a smile.

Foreign visitors at Yuyuan share Zhang’s perspective despite knowing little about the festival before attending. Gerald Mohnl, a 57-year-old Austrian, gained a “nice” experience at Yuyuan on his last day of a business trip to China. Making his first visit to the country and Shanghai, he was impressed by the electric vehicles and described the city as “very clean and super modern”.

“We went through Yuyuan, which was a really nice experience. There are a lot of traditional buildings here. Chinese culture is interesting and totally different from our culture. It is very comfortable with friendly people,” he says.

Susan Willis, an Australian nurse on her first visit to Shanghai, was about to finish her 10-day trip and was impressed by the buildings at Yuyuan.

“The architecture is lovely, traditional and classic. Shanghai is an innovative and spectacular city,” she says, adding that she knew little about Chinese culture and felt she learned a lot.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Gavin Ellis: Forensic detail on NZME but where are the guarantees?

Report by Dr David Robie – Café Pacific.

    KNIGHTLY VIEWS: By Gavin Ellis

Excoriating is the word that may best describe expat Canadian James Grenon’s 11-page critique of NZME. His forensic examination of the board he hopes to replace and the company’s performance is a sobering read.

You may not have seen the letter. At the time of writing, it was still sitting behind The New Zealand Herald’s Premium paywall. It is, however, available through the New Zealand Stock Exchange. You can access it here.

Grenon is highly critical in a number of areas that he breaks down into sections in the letter. The headings include:

“The combined performance of the two core businesses has been mediocre, to sliding, for the past eight years, despite a temporary period of covid gains.”

“There has been a consistent pattern of over promising and under delivering since covid.”

“Public disclosure is weak, with a slant that I interpret as supporting the status quo.”

Grenon’s letter includes an analysis of NZME’s share price in relation to the perceived value of its OneRoof real estate marketing arm, and the company’s dividend policy. He claims “the disclosure on these two critical elements is, in my opinion, lacking or even misleading”. He also criticises levels of management-level remuneration and high levels of staff turnover which he says “does not suggest a happy working environment”.

NZME’s board has yet to respond to the letter stating — in a note to the New Zealand Stock Exchange accompanying the release of Grenon’s letter — that it will do so in its notice to shareholders before the annual general meeting on April 29.

Were that the sum total of his challenge to the present board, it might be characterised as simply a move to improve the group’s financial performance and its return to shareholders. Much of what he says will, in fact, resonate with ordinary shareholders worried about the group’s financial performance and direction. It may well attract even more votes at the April AGM than he currently commands.

However, there is an enormous caveat hanging over any support for Grenon’s initiative.

He states categorically in his letter that he does not propose to act as a passive board chair (yes, there is an assumption that he will head an entirely new board). Instead, he leaves a strong impression he will be an executive chairman, in effect if not in name.

“I propose to be very active at the management level, leading a board and team that will delve into the operational details so as to be able to challenge management . . . This approach to governance is the only realistic way to ensure NZME gets a fresh set of eyes questioning every aspect of operational effectiveness and shareholder value creation.” The italics are mine and are highlighted for reasons I will return to shortly, but the import is clear: James Grenon and his team will have a finger in the pie.

The second reason for exercising caution on any endorsement of the Canadian’s move relates to the three paragraphs he groups under the heading “Journalism”.

On the surface, he promises better journalism, saying his intention is that “more quality content should be produced, not less”.

In contrast to NZME’s recent announcement to “set a new tone and build positive social momentum for New Zealanders”, our proposal will lift the company’s journalistic standards, resulting in the production of higher quality news content, characterised by independent, trustworthy and balanced perspectives. There will also be material for entertainment value as well. Then all the content will be used in any number of ways to generate profit.

He also applauds the “audience leading ratings of NZME’s audio segment”.

All of this sounds laudible, until one asks the simple question: How?

He has yet to give any specific answers. A request from the journalists’ union E Tū for assurances simply led to Grenon asking more questions about what the union meant by “editorial independence”.

However, let’s return to what Grenon means by his references to NZME’s journalism.

If he means the board will limit itself to supporting an annual budget that will allow NZME’s editors to independently produce the sort of content to which his letter alludes, all well and good.

If he means the aims set out in his letter will be transmitted to editors as an expectation of their approach to journalism, no problem.

However, when read in conjunction with the intentions I italicised above, there are strong indications that he intends to be at least meddlesome and, at worst, to dictate editorial direction and content. There is a signal to his editorial preferences in the fact that he applauds radio ratings that are firmly anchored by NewstalkZB’s right-leaning content.

Nowhere in Grenon’s letter is there any undertaking to observe the principles of editorial independence that certainly permeated The New Zealand Herald when I was editor a couple of decades ago and which I inherited from a long list of predecessors. Nowhere is there recognition that NZME has responsibilities to the general public. Declining trust is seen only in terms of the impact on profits.

Responsible and accountable journalism is something editors and their staff hold in trust on behalf of society. They seek audiences for the dual purposes of spreading that journalism to the general public and, in the process, producing the profits that ensure its ongoing sustainability. Done well, it is a virtuous circle.

However, like all circles, once any part of it is fractured it collapses. If Mr Grenon views the editorial department in the same way he sees every other aspect of NZME’s business, he would be in boots and all. Then it would be only a matter of time before the circle falls in on itself.

James Grenon’s bid deserves support only if he gives cast-iron guarantees of editorial independence, and that requires more than a letter of reassurance. Mere words are not enough.

Well-founded concerns for the future of a vital component of our journalistic infrastructure will be allayed only by changing the constitution of NZME to prevent directors from instructing any employee on editorial policy or operational matters. That protection would be all the more vital if now-stalled discussions over the purchase of Stuff’s titles and associated digital outlets are resumed after NZME’s board battle is resolved.

Both Television New Zealand and Radio New Zealand have statutory protection against ministerial interference in editorial matters. The community deserves the same protection from board interference in private sector media in the public interest.

That, however, has never been a given and many news media enterprises rely on a mixture of tradition and peer pressure to ensure their journalists are insulated from undue influence.

The New York Times, for example, has a proud tradition of editorial independence but that owes more to the Salzberger family than to the company’s articles of association. The Daily Mail and General Trust have a tradition whereby its editors are appointed by the editor-in-chief in consultation with the board chairman, who also by tradition has been Viscount Rothermere (currently the fourth holder of the title). Each editor then controls the content of the respective titles. The editor-in-chief of The Guardian is not appointed by the board but by the Scott Trust, which owns the newspaper group, and reports directly to it.

I commend to Grenon and his fellow board aspirants an essay on editorial independence by the chairman of the New York Times Company, A G Salzberger. You can access it here.

For NZME to have effective guarantees of editorial independence, its articles would need to have a failsafe mechanism to prevent the sort of override that Rupert Murdoch affected with his news acquisitions. Such a mechanism might be special recourse to the Media Council in the event of an attempt by directors to interfere. The council could then independently investigate whether there had been a breach of the company constitution. Disclosure of such a breach could be damaging to both directors and the company.

The combination of protective governance plus an independent review process would allay most of the fears generated by Grenon’s utterances and his past brief encounters with news media — a former shareholding in the right-wing aggregator site The Centrist, and financing of legal action against mainstream media.

NZME shareholders and the public of New Zealand should be very wary if no such undertakings are forthcoming.

    • Disclosure: I was formerly a shareholder in the previous parent company of the group but do not currently hold shares in NZME.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Everything you say to an Alexa speaker will be sent to Amazon – starting today

Source: The Conversation – Global Perspectives – By Kathy Reid, PhD Candidate, School of Cybernetics, Australian National University

    Amazon

Amazon has disabled two key privacy features in its Alexa smart speakers, in a push to introduce artificial intelligence-powered “agentic capabilities” and turn a profit from the popular devices.

Starting today (March 28), Alexa devices will send all audio recordings to the cloud for processing, and choosing not to save these recordings will disable personalisation features.

    How do voice assistants work?

A voice assistant works by constantly listening for a “wake word”, such as “Alexa”. Once woken, it records the command that is spoken and matches it to an action, such as playing a music track. Matching a spoken command to an action requires what computer scientists call natural language understanding, which can take a lot of computer power.

Matching commands to actions can be done locally (on the device itself), or sound recordings can be uploaded to the cloud for processing. On-device processing has improved substantially in recent years, but is still less accurate than using the cloud, where more computer power is available.

Amazon is making two changes today

Alexa devices send recordings to the cloud by default. However, some high-end Echo models previously supported a setting called “Do not send voice recordings”.

If this setting was enabled, all recordings were processed locally. In practice, only a tiny fraction of Echo users (around 0.03% had this turned on.

In the first change, this setting is being disabled, and all recordings will be sent to the cloud.

Once in the cloud, recordings can be deleted or saved.

Saved recordings are used for Amazon’s Voice ID feature, which distinguishes between speakers in the same household and aims to provide a personalised experience.

Alexa users also have a setting called “Don’t save recordings”, which, if enabled, deletes cloud recordings once they’re processed. In the second change, if the “Don’t save recordings” setting is enabled, Voice ID will stop working, and with it, access to personalised features such as user-specific calendar events.

This two-step change means Alexa users need to make a trade-off between privacy and functionality.

Alexa loses a lot of money

Put simply, Amazon needs Echo devices to start making money.

As US voice assistant expert Joseph Turow has detailed, Amazon began selling Echo devices very cheaply as a “loss leader”. Amazon says it has sold more than 500 million Alexa devices, but between 2017 and 2021 alone the company lost more than US$25 billion on the project.

Amazon is looking to generative AI to turn the business around, with a US$8 billion investment in OpenAI competitor Anthropic.

Amazon has invested US$8 billion in AI developer Anthropic.
    Amazon

In February, Amazon launched a new AI-powered Alexa+ system. It promises more natural interaction and the ability to carry out tasks such as booking flights. Alexa+ is currently only available in the United States.

“Agentic capabilities” such as booking flights require detailed profile information about the user on whose behalf they are acting. This would include details such as preferred products or services.

Voice ID and data from spoken commands assist Amazon in tying preferences to a particular person.

    An AI-powered intermediary

How will Alexa+ help Amazon make money? The first way is via direct subscription fees: the service will eventually only be available to Amazon Prime members or people who pay US$19.99 per month.

But what may prove more important is that it will help Amazon to position itself as an intermediary between buyers and sellers. This is what Amazon already does with its existing e-commerce platform.

It’s easy to see the system in action when you search for a product on Amazon’s website. Alongside items sold directly by Amazon, you are presented with products from multiple sellers, each of whom pays Amazon to be listed.

    Everybody pays the platform

Agentic capabilities are likely to have a similar business model. Service providers – such as airlines or restaurant reservation companies – would pay Amazon when Alexa+ refers customers to them.

Amazon’s move is part of a broader phenomenon termed “platform capitalism”. This takes in the crowdsourced content of social media platforms, “sharing economy” businesses such as AirBnb, and the automated gig work of the likes of Uber.

Platform capitalism has delivered benefits for consumers, but in general the greatest benefits flow to those who own the platforms and design their infrastructure, services and constraints.

    How to protect your privacy

After receiving a US$25 million fine from the US Federal Trade Commission for retaining childrens’ voice recordings in contravention of US laws, Amazon has overhauled Alexa’s privacy settings.

The settings can be viewed and changed from the Alexa app on your smartphone, under “More > Alexa Privacy”. Alexa users may wish to review the settings in “Manage
your Alexa Data” to choose how long recordings are saved for and which
voice recordings to delete. Recordings may also be deleted using a voice
    command.

As Alexa+ becomes available more widely, users will need to decide whether they are comfortable sharing data about their preferences with Amazon to enable agentic capabilities.

Some Alexa privacy settings are still available.
    Amazon

    What are the alternatives?

For users who are uncomfortable with the privacy settings now available with Alexa, a private voice assistant may prove a better choice.

Youths to face court over Metro incidents

    Friday, 28 March 2025 – 12:07 pm.

Police are proceeding against three youths over incidents reported on Metro buses earlier this month.
A 14-year-old boy will face court over two matters, including allegedly stealing from a bus on 13 March, and assaulting a bus driver and stealing a quantity of cash in Glenorchy on 15 March.
Two 15-year-old boys will face court after allegedly damaging a bus in Gagebrook on 19 March, and stealing approximately $270 worth of property in a separate matter.
Inspector Jason Klug said CCTV enabled police to quickly identify all the alleged offenders.
“The safety of Metro employees and community members on public transport is a priority for Tasmania Police,” he said.
“We work in partnership with Metro and have dedicated officers who proactively patrol and detect offending on buses and around key transport areas.”
“The use of high quality CCTV on buses and in bus malls helps us to identify those engaging in illegal behaviours.”

  • MIL-OSI China: Europe pushes back as Trump slaps tariffs on imported cars

Source: China State Council Information Office

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday turned his earlier threat into action by signing an executive order imposing 25 percent tariffs on all imported vehicles.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, gives a press statement on EU countermeasures to U.S. tariffs in Strasbourg, France, March 12, 2025. (European Union/Handout via Xinhua)

The move has sparked a wave of criticism across Europe, prompting political leaders, experts, and industry representatives to call for countermeasures. They have also urged the strengthening of trade ties with other partners to help offset the impact of rising tariffs.

    WIDESPREAD OPPOSITION

Emphasizing the importance of the transatlantic partnership and free trade as pillars of prosperity for both Europe and the United States, Hildegard Mueller, president of the German Association of Automotive Industry, described Trump’s decision as “a disastrous signal for free and rules-based trade.”

Mueller’s remarks echo the widespread criticism and mounting tensions in transatlantic relations, which were further inflamed by Europe’s strong backlash on Thursday.

Starting April 2, the previously low tariffs on car imports between the two allies will no longer apply, with rates set to rise sharply. The move follows Trump’s claim that the European Union’s trade surplus with the United States — especially in the automotive sector — is excessive.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the additional tariffs both economically and geopolitically misguided. He also questioned the timing of the move, pointing to the irony that longstanding U.S. allies were the first to be targeted. “There is a kind of paradox in seeing the United States’ main allies being the first to be taxed,” he said.

Jose Lopez-Tafall, director general of the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers, described the tariffs as “clearly negative,” warning that they pave the way for “an economic confrontation” between both sides.

“The new U.S. administration is adopting an increasingly confrontational approach toward its trading partners,” said Sonali Chowdhry, a trade expert at the German Institute for Economic Research. She noted that the new auto tariffs target a highly globalized industry and are certain to disrupt complex international supply chains.

The Czech Automotive Industry Association also voiced its “serious concern” over the disruption the duties could cause to the economies of European manufacturers and suppliers, warning that the tariffs threaten their global competitiveness.

TARIFFS THREATEN BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC

Experts widely agree that the rising tariffs will inflict economic damage on both Europe and the United States. The resulting surge in costs is expected to be passed directly on to U.S. consumers, fueling inflation, while also dampening European exports and leading to potential job losses across the continent. Moreover, many U.S.-built vehicles depend heavily on components sourced from Europe.

“A trade war has no winners,” said Dirk Jandura, president of the Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services. The trade body had previously projected a 2.7 percent decline in German foreign trade in 2025. “We will now revise this forecast significantly downward,” Jandura added.

The impact of the tariffs is expected to hit German carmakers particularly hard, as a substantial share of their exports is destined for the U.S. market.

According to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, around 3.4 million new German vehicles were exported in 2024, with the United States accounting for 13.1 percent of the total.

The United Kingdom is also likely to be heavily affected, as the United States is its second-largest market for car exports after the European Union. British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said talks would be held between the two countries to forge a better trade relationship. “Trade wars are no good for anyone, and Britain does not want to escalate this conflict,” Reeves said.

An Italian study by Marco Simoni, a political economist at Rome’s LUISS University, forecasts that the U.S. economy could contract by 2-3 percent due to the tariffs. The study also predicts that the unemployment rate could rise by three percentage points between 2025 and 2032, while inflation may increase by 4 percent over the next two years.

    RETALIATORY MEASURES ON THE WAY

European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill warned on Thursday that the EU is preparing “robust” and “well-calibrated” countermeasures.

“We have this announcement on cars. Next week, we understand that a new suite of measures from the U.S., what they’re calling their reciprocal tariffs, will come into force. We regret all of these, but we are preparing for all of these,” Gill said.

German Economics Minister Robert Habeck noted that the U.S. tariffs were “not a surprise,” adding that the European Commission had coordinated closely with EU member states in anticipation of such moves. “We will not back down to the U.S.,” he emphasized.

French Finance Minister Eric Lombard said the EU’s only viable response is to impose higher tariffs on U.S. goods. A list of targeted American products is currently being finalized and is expected to take effect in mid-April.

Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament’s Trade Committee, suggested that retaliatory measures could include targeting major U.S. tech companies such as Google, Amazon, and Netflix, which maintain extensive customer bases and market influence in Europe. He proposed that digital services should be considered for additional tariffs.

This stance echoes recent remarks by Dirk Jandura, who issued a statement titled “Foreign Trade Demands Tough Countermeasures.” In it, he urged the EU to respond decisively to what he called Washington’s unilateral and rule-breaking actions.

He also emphasized the importance of addressing the dominant position held by American digital corporations in the European market.

    EXPANDING PARTNERSHIPS BEYOND U.S.

Beyond retaliatory measures against the United States, experts have called for deeper cooperation with other trade partners to help offset the negative impact of rising tariffs.

Sonali Chowdhry argued that the EU’s long-term economic growth and resilience will depend on strengthening trade both within the European single market and with other free trade partners, in order to diversify export destinations.

“It is beneficial for us to move more decisively toward regions where cooperation is possible. One example is China,” said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, a prominent German automotive expert and director of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR).

He suggested that the automotive sector should place greater emphasis on international platforms such as the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show.

Speaking to Xinhua, Mario Boselli, chairman of the Italy China Council Foundation, said that Trump’s return to the White House, combined with a lack of cohesion within the EU, could further disrupt global economic and trade dynamics. These shifts, he suggested, may prompt Europe to reassess its external economic strategy, with deeper cooperation with China representing “a highly strategic choice.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: Everything you say to an Alexa speaker will be sent to Amazon – starting today

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Kathy Reid, PhD Candidate, School of Cybernetics, Australian National University

The Home Assistant Voice Preview is one example. It gives people the option to have voice recordings processed on-device, but offers less functionality than Alexa and can’t work with as many other services. It’s also not very user-friendly, being aimed more at technical tinkerers.

Users may face a trade-off between privacy and functionality, both within Alexa itself and when considering alternatives. They may also find themselves grappling with their own place in the increasingly inescapable systems of platform capitalism.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Durbin Slams Trump Administration’s Cuts To Social Security Administration As Trump, Musk Call Beneficiaries “Parasites”

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Illinois Dick Durbin

    March 27, 2025

In his remarks, Durbin admonished the Trump Administration for spreading misinformation about fraud within the Social Security Administration

WASHINGTON  U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today delivered a speech on the Senate floor admonishing the Trump Administration for its assault on Social Security, a program that millions of Americans rely on.  During his remarks, Durbin pushed back against President Trump and Elon Musk’s claims that the Social Security Administration (SSA) is riddled with frauded.

“He [President Trump] delivered this address to the Joint Session of Congress and the American people, the one time each year we’re focused on the President’s words, and he made these deliberate misrepresentations of the Social Security Administration.  He claimed that the unelected billionaire Elon Musk and his DOGE boys had identified ‘shocking levels of incompetence and probable fraud’ within Social Security.  Mr. Musk then claimed, at a later point, that tens of millions of dead people over the age of 100 are still receiving Social Security benefits.  [That’s] outrageous and untrue,” Durbin began.

In his Joint Address, President Trump claimed that a 360-year-old was receiving Social Security benefits.  The Washington Post investigated President Trump’s nonsensical claims by obtaining internal records from SSA.  The investigation, which found that only 1,300 Americans over the age of 100 were receiving benefits, debunked the Trump Administration’s claims that “tens of millions of dead people over the age of 100” were cashing in on Social Security benefits.

“The truth is you’d be hard-pressed to find another agency that is more closely scrutinized than Social Security.  It routinely audits benefit payments to make sure they’re accurate.  The Office of Inspector General conducted a report in 2024 which found that less than one percent of Social Security payments were improper.  Less than one percent.  President Trump’s statement made it seem like Social Security is riddled with fraud and incompetence.  Payments to a 360-year-old individual?  Outrageous, untrue,” Durbin continued.

Durbin argued that President Trump and Elon Musk are attacking SSA as a means to justify the Administration’s destruction of the federal workforce and agencies.

“I believe President Trump and Mr. Musk are intentionally misrepresenting the challenges Social Security faces as the rationale to implement their harmful policies.  The Trump Administration’s disdain for Social Security is clear.  Elon Musk, the President’s unelected buddy, describes Social Security [as] ‘the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time…’  And [Musk] shared a post on Twitter that called those who benefit from federal programs, get ready, ‘the parasite class,’” Durbin continued.

“Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick called Americans who were calling in to report missing Social Security benefits ‘fraudsters.’  The same billionaire, Mr. Lutnick, bragged that his mother-in-law wouldn’t care if she didn’t receive a monthly check from Social Security,” said Durbin.  “Well perhaps, if your son-in-law is a billionaire, you don’t care.”

“These comments are not only wrong and misleading, they are sickening, sickening.  These people work their whole lives paying into Social Security with the promise it will take care of them when they decided to retire.  Now, the question is raised whether they are ‘parasites’ throughout their lives,” Durbin said.

Durbin then spoke about the Trump Administration’s recent actions to harm the Social Security Administration’s operations by slashing its workforce, announcing plans to terminate 7,000 workers, 12 percent of the workforce at SSA.  The Trump Administration also plans to limit phone services despite constituents already reporting that they must wait several hours to have their call answered.  Further, the Administration has announced that it will close some Social Security offices across the country, including in Illinois.

“I ran into an individual in a coffee shop in Springfield, [Illinois], a few weeks ago.  He’s retired now, and he said, ‘Senator, it was smarter for me to get in the car and drive 40 minutes each way to Litchfield, Illinois, to the Social Security office, rather than wait in line for hours at the Springfield office.  Each of the actions taken by the Trump Administration has made it more difficult forseniors and people with disabilities to access their benefits.  Americans are worried, some even terrified, questioning whether or not they will continue to have access to earned benefits and essential services,” Durbin said.

Durbin concluded his remarks by emphasizing that Social Security is an earned benefit that Americans pay into, not a handout, contrary to President Trump’s claims.

“Americans depend on Social Security and its workers to pick up the phone, answer the questions, and help them secure their benefits.  Social Security is a bedrock of American society.  It is a promise.  All of us contribute to it, expecting it will be there when we need,” Durbin said.  “For too long we’ve asked the Social Security Administration to do more with less, and now President Trump has taken that to an extreme.  I’m calling on him to abandon these plans.”

“If you actually want to make Social Security more efficient, it needs more well-trained people, more resources, more funding.  We do not need the recent college graduates in the so-called Department of Government Efficiency taking Social Security for a joyride while their grandparents are in the back holding on for dear life,” Durbin said.  “We certainly don’t need the sage advice of billionaires who cannot begin to understand what it means to live month-to-month waiting for your Social Security check as so many Americans do.”

Video of Durbin’s remarks on the Senate floor is available here.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Murphy: Republicans Apply a Different Set of Rules for Elon Musk

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Connecticut – Chris Murphy

    March 27, 2025

    [embedded content]

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Thursday spoke on the U.S. Senate floor to object to a Republican request for unanimous consent to pass a resolution that claims to condemn domestic terrorism but instead gives special treatment to Elon Musk. Murphy slammed the hypocrisy of condemning violence against Musk’s businesses while excusing the January 6th rioters who brutally attacked Capitol Police officers.

“Come on, this resolution is not about violence or domestic terrorism. It just isn’t,” said Murphy. “This is a resolution that says one thing and one thing only: Elon Musk is in charge. He matters more than anybody else. Musk is subject to a different set of rules than everybody else. The Trump administration serves him, not us. The Republican Party serves him, not us. Elon Musk right now is effectively stealing from the American people. He is combing through our government, awarding himself contracts, canceling contracts for his competitors. He is shutting down agencies that stand in the way of his business [and] his growth. He’s giving himself access to secret information about government enforcement actions against his competitors.”

“He is also, at the same time, currently the largest funder of Republican politics in the nation,” Murphy continued. “He spent a quarter of a billion dollars backing President Trump’s campaign. He recently told the president that he would contribute another $100 million to the president’s political arm, and guess what? At that same time, the president stood on the White House lawn to give a taxpayer-funded commercial for Elon Musk’s cars. That’s corruption at a scale that we have not seen before in this country. The integration of the Trump White House and the Republican Party and the business interests of the richest man in the world. It’s wrong.”

Murphy highlighted the resolution’s pandering to Elon Musk despite thousands of other domestic terrorism incidents: “This resolution claims to say something about domestic terrorism, but the only terrorism, the only violence it mentions, is violence carried out against – you guessed it – Elon Musk. On an annual basis, there are 11,000 reported incidents of domestic terrorism. 11,000. Only a handful of them impact Tesla dealerships, but they’re the only acts of violence mentioned in this resolution. 52% of the reported attacks were based on racial or ethnic targeting by radicalized attackers, but they aren’t mentioned in this resolution. Only Elon Musk is mentioned in this resolution. Because a different set of rules apply to him. Because he is in charge, and he deserves protection that no one else gets. He deserves a White House TV commercial for his cars. He deserves to give himself contracts and steal from his competitors. He deserves to have his own resolution.”

Murphy proposed the Senate also agree to a resolution expressing disapproval of the pardons of January 6th rioters: “This resolution just says that the specific set of people who viciously attacked police officers – the ones that hit the police officers over the head with metal poles – that those people shouldn’t have been given a get-out-of-jail-free card. And so why don’t we just be consistent? We don’t we say that violence matters when it’s committed against Elon Musk’s dealerships, and it matters when it’s committed against the people that protect us? And so my offer is to just pass both resolutions right now. Right now, we could just agree by unanimous consent to your resolution, and we could agree as a body that you shouldn’t pardon the people who brutally beat the people who show up every day to protect us. They matter, too. Elon Musk isn’t the only person that matters.”

A full transcript of his remarks can be found below:

MURPHY: “Mr. President, thank you. Reserving the right to object. Come on, this resolution is not about violence or domestic terrorism. It just isn’t. This is a resolution that says one thing and one thing only: Elon Musk is in charge. He matters more than anybody else.

He deserves a White House TV commercial for his cars. He deserves to give himself contracts and steal from his competitors. He deserves to have his own resolution.

“And people are asking why? Why does the richest man in the country get this special treatment? To most people it feels pretty fishy. It definitely feels wrong. Now I hate violence of any kind, whether it’s perpetrated against right, left, or center. I’ve spent my life on this floor fighting violence. But I also hate inconsistency.

“So I’m going to make my colleague a pretty reasonable offer here. At the same time that President Trump is saying that he’s going to vigorously pursue people that attack Tesla dealerships, he’s giving pardons to the people who beat the hell out of Capitol Police officers. So I don’t think we should consent to a resolution that says we care about violence but only when it is committed against the business interests of the richest man in the world.

“I have a way to solve that problem. Senator Murray has a really simple resolution. A resolution that expresses our disapproval of the pardons that were issued for the very specific set of individuals who on January 6th brutally attacked Capitol Police officers. Now I understand that many of my Republican colleagues think that the people who trespassed here shouldn’t have been prosecuted. Let’s set aside that disagreement. This resolution just says that the specific set of people who viciously attacked police officers – the ones that hit the police officers over the head with metal poles – that those people shouldn’t have been given a get-out-of-jail-free card. Elon Musk isn’t the only person that matters. Capitol Police officers matter, too.

“So I’d ask the Senator to modify her request to add the following: that the Committee on the Judiciary be discharged from further consideration and the Senate now proceed to S. Res. 42, a resolution condemning the pardons for individuals who were found guilty of assaulting Capitol Police officers, that the resolution be agreed to, and the motion to reconsider be considered made and laid upon the table. If we agree to move forward on this unanimous consent, I think we can move forward on the Senator’s request as well.”
