    WASHINGTON, D.C. — In case you missed it, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, published an op-ed in the New York Times this morning following his forcible removal from Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem’s press conference, where he was thrown to the ground and handcuffed after attempting to ask a question.

    Padilla blasted President Trump’s unprecedented militarization of Los Angeles and warned against the immense consequences of the Trump Administration’s increasingly callous anti-immigrant rhetoric and actions, not only for hardworking immigrants essential to our communities and economy, but for the fundamental democratic rights of Americans across the country. He called Trump’s manufactured crisis in Los Angeles a “warning shot” and a “wake-up call” for his Republican colleagues and the American people to speak up against Trump’s egregious continued abuse of power.

    Senator Padilla has been outspoken in calling out the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles and Trump’s misguided deployment of the National Guard and U.S. Marine Corps. This past weekend, Padilla led the entire Senate Democratic Caucus in demanding that President Trump immediately withdraw all military forces from Los Angeles and cease all threats to deploy the National Guard or active-duty servicemembers to American cities. Last week, Padilla and Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) demanded answers regarding the Trump Administration’s decision to deploy approximately 700 Marines to Los Angeles. Padilla has spoken at a spotlight hearing and on the Senate floor multiple times to blast President Trump for manufacturing a crisis by launching indiscriminate ICE raids across Los Angeles and deploying the National Guard and active-duty servicemembers to the region. He also joined all Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats earlier this week in calling on Chairman Grassley to schedule Department of Homeland Security Secretary Noem for a broad oversight hearing for testimony before the committee.

    Growing up in the northeast San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles in the 1980s and 90s, you know what can happen if you don’t completely cooperate with law enforcement.

    Even so, it was jarring last week when, despite clearly identifying myself as a U.S. senator, I was forcibly removed from a news conference at which Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, promised to “liberate” Los Angeles from our democratically elected mayor and governor. As I was thrown to the ground, handcuffed and walked down a hall while officers refused to tell me why I was being detained, my mind raced with questions.

    Where are they taking me? Am I being arrested? What will a city already on edge from being militarized think when they see their senator has just been handcuffed?

    What will my wife and our three boys think?

    I imagined similar questions were running through the mind of Brad Lander, the New York City comptroller and mayoral candidate, this week when he, too, was handcuffed by federal agents for asking them whether they had a warrant to arrest a migrant he had locked arms with. Like me, Mr. Lander had the audacity to question the legitimacy of federal actions, only to find himself pushed against a wall and detained.

    If you watched what happened to me or Mr. Lander these past few days and thought this was about any one politician or altercation, you are missing the point.

    If this administration is willing to handcuff a U.S. senator, imagine what it is willing to do to any American who dares to speak up.

    If that’s what can happen when the cameras are on, imagine what is already happening in communities across the country when the cameras are off.

    Today, it’s immigrants on the receiving end of Donald Trump’s outrage machine. Tomorrow, it could be anyone.

    We have seen this playbook before. In fact, it’s what drew me to politics in the first place, back in 1994. I had just earned my mechanical engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with my sights set on a lucrative career in engineering, but life had a different plan for me. I returned home from school to find hateful TV ads and a statewide ballot called Proposition 187, a proposal targeting immigrant families and communities like mine. It was the result of a Republican governor who was up for re-election and who had turned to scapegoating immigrants to try to improve his declining political standing.

    As the proud son of immigrants from Mexico who came to California to pursue the American dream, I am living proof of the promise this country provides to all of us. Where else can the son of a housekeeper and a short-order cook become a senator? But I also know that America’s promise doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because throughout our history ordinary people have called out our country’s contradictions and called on the government to live up to the principles of equality established at our founding.

    And so I got involved. Alongside friends and family, I marched against the vile anti-immigrant rhetoric that was growing in California. Because of the movement that started in the 1990s, a generation of diverse leaders have come of age in California. Today, we celebrate immigrants — knowing full well that California has become the fourth-largest economy in the world, not despite our immigrants but because of them.

    So when Mr. Trump began to face a groundswell of criticism a few weeks ago for his unpopular Medicaid cuts, failed tariff wars and embarrassing public breakup with a billionaire adviser, I suspected that it wouldn’t be long before he broke out the same tired anti-immigrant tactics to distract the public. Raids intensified, detentions skyrocketed and Mr. Trump’s narrative of crisis escalated in the hopes of diverting attention from his political failures.

    If the administration were primarily targeting dangerous criminals, as some White House officials have claimed, there would be no debate. But new reporting shows that less than 10 percent of immigrants taken into ICE custody since October have serious criminal convictions. They may be undocumented, but who are they? Oftentimes, they’re hardworking cooks, day laborers, carwash employees, farmworkers and construction workers. Many are the same people Mr. Trump declared essential workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

    But as we’ve seen in Los Angeles, public safety is not the point — the spectacle is. Americans are living through a historic moment of presidential overreach. With a cabinet of yes-men and underqualified attack dogs surrounding him — from the D.H.S. Secretary to the F.B.I. director to the secretary of defense — Mr. Trump is now testing the boundaries of his power. And he’s using the theatrics around his immigration policies to do it.

    That’s why when Angelenos gathered to protest these injustices, the administration labeled them “insurrectionists,” deliberately twisting dissent into something dangerous to use as a pretext for repression.

    So if you thought any of this administration’s theatrics in Los Angeles these past few weeks was truly about immigrants, it’s time to wake up. If federal troops can deploy to Los Angeles against the wishes of the governor, the mayor and even local law enforcement, they can do the same tomorrow in your hometown. This is a fundamental threat to the rule of law nationwide.

    What’s happening in Los Angeles is a warning shot. But I pray it can also be a wake-up call — for my Republican Senate colleagues who have stayed silent in the face of their colleague’s handcuffing, but also for Americans of every stripe who think they’re insulated from Mr. Trump’s power grabs because they’re not immigrants or because they’re not from a blue state.

    Democracy doesn’t fall from any one decision or any one attack. It falls from a thousand cuts that slowly erode our fundamental freedoms. It falls when good people see our democracy sliding backward but still choose to say nothing.

    Even as I’ve seen the authoritarian instincts of this administration up close, I know America is not past saving. True liberation doesn’t come through military occupation. It comes through democratic participation — participation like what we saw this past weekend, when millions of Americans came out to protest this administration’s abuse of power.

    To any American wondering if democracy is lost or if they can ever make a difference, I’d say this: If the Trump administration was this scared of one senator with a question, imagine what the voices of tens of millions of Americans organizing will do. No one is coming to save us but us.

    Rapist who filmed assault has sentence increased

    A man who raped a woman and shared a video of his assault with other people has had his sentence increased, following intervention by the Solicitor General.

    Gagandeep Gulati (20), from Hounslow, West London, has had his sentence increased by three years after the Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP, referred the case to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.  

    The Court heard that Gulati found the victim near Jubilee Square in Leicester city centre and coerced her to go to Castle Gardens where he raped and sexually assaulted her.  

    Gulati’s movements were captured by CCTV, which led detectives to an accommodation where he was arrested. 

    During police enquiries, Gulati claimed that he had been raped and assaulted by the victim. However, detectives found that he had filmed his attack on the victim and shared the footage with other people.  

    The Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP said: 

    Gagandeep Gulati’s rape of a vulnerable young woman before sharing his awful crimes with other people was sickening.

    I welcome the court’s decision to increase his sentence following my intervention.

    On 28 March 2025, Gagandeep Gulati was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault, and sharing or threatening to share an intimate photograph or film.   He was also placed on the sex offender register for life.

    On 19 June 2025, judges increased Gulati’s sentence to nine years, while imposing concurrent sentences for the assault by penetration and sexual assault of four years and six months respectively after it was referred to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

    Good evening. It is a pleasure to be with you tonight as we celebrate the 37th anniversary of AustCham in Hong Kong. 

    Let me begin by extending my heartfelt congratulations to you all. For nearly four decades, you have evolved from a casual lunch club into the largest offshore Australian Chamber of Commerce.

    And through your Community Awards, you not only honour excellence in sustainability, women’s leadership, sports, entertainment and entrepreneurship; you have also strengthened the vibrant ties between Hong Kong and Australia.

    When shots rang out in Minnesota, targeting state Democratic politicians, the headlines quickly followed a familiar script: a mentally unstable suspect and the well-worn label “lone gunman.”

    According to media reports, the Minnesota gunman, Vance Luther Boelter, was a deeply religious anti-abortion activist and a conservative who supported President Donald Trump.

    The term lone gunman, routinely deployed in the aftermath of mass shootings and political violence – that the suspect was simply acting alone, so there’s no one or nothing else to blame – may offer a comforting explanation, but it’s dangerously simplistic.

    It obscures the conditions that made the violence possible in the first place. It casts the perpetrator as an isolated anomaly – mentally unwell, unpredictable, detached from broader movements or ideologies.

    As a scholar of extremism, I argue that the use of this term ignores the larger symptoms of deeper societal failures such as rising political extremism, systemic hate or the normalization of violent rhetoric.

    The lone gunman myth

    The idea of the lone gunman has long held sway in American public discourse, with perhaps no example more iconic than the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The Warren Commission that was set up to investigate concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, a finding still contested by many.

    But more significant than the historical debate is how the lone gunman label became entrenched in the national psyche. It presents a digestible narrative, one that absolves institutions of responsibility and short-circuits more difficult questions about what conditions produced the attacker in the first place.

    More recent examples reveal how this myth continues to serve as a shield against systemic scrutiny.

    After the 2012 mass shooting that killed 12 people and injured 70 others at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, media coverage quickly centered on James Holmes’ mental state, with little emphasis on the culture of gun access, misogyny or disaffection with peers that shaped his actions.

    Similarly, after Dylann Roof murdered nine Black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015, early coverage emphasized his apparent isolation and mental state. However, he had openly stated his motivations in a racist manifesto and had long-standing connections to white supremacist ideology that motivated and shaped his violence.

    Radicalization is rarely solitary

    In most cases, so-called lone wolves are not as isolated as the term implies. Researchers have increasingly shown that radicalization is a social process.

    Individuals absorb extremist views through online echo chambers, algorithmic recommendation systems, peer validation and reinforcement from political and media figures.

    This is evident in cases like that of Robert Bowers, who killed 11 people at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018. Bowers’ defense attorneys said in a March 2023 court filing that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Though he acted alone, Bowers was deeply embedded in far-right networks on the social media platform Gab, where he echoed white nationalist and antisemitic conspiracy theories.

    Similarly, Payton Gendron, who killed 10 Black people in a Buffalo supermarket in 2022, cited previous mass shooters as inspiration and plagiarized sections of a white nationalist manifesto. His radicalization was nourished in extremist online forums on platforms such as 4chan and Discord.

    Even attacks without manifestos or explicit ideological tracts often follow recognizable scripts. The El Paso shooter, who killed 23 people in a Walmart in 2019, wrote that he was targeting Hispanics as part of a defense against an “invasion” of immigrants – echoing language used by some conservative analysts, pundits and political figures in mainstream U.S. media and government.

    Again and again, attackers are seen to be acting in ways that align with a broader rationalization or ideology, even if they do not carry official membership in a particular group or organization.

    The politics of the ‘lone gunman’

    Importantly, the lone gunman narrative is applied unevenly, especially along racial lines.

    White perpetrators are frequently described as mentally ill or troubled loners. Their violence is compartmentalized as the result of personal demons. In contrast, as the Sentencing Project – which is working to address racial disparities in the criminal justice system – has shown, Black, Muslim or immigrant suspects are often held up as proof of a broader threat: religious, ethnic or cultural.

    This double standard not only reinforces racial stereotypes but also shapes how law enforcement and the media view violence committed by white actors – as an aberration rather than a pattern.

    The media can play a crucial role in perpetuating the lone gunman myth.
    Consider how swiftly the media and politicians labeled the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting, perpetrated by Omar Mateen, as an act of Islamist terrorism. Even though Mateen had no meaningful connections to any terrorist groups, his Islamic religious beliefs were used to construct a narrative that he was part of a global threat.

    By contrast, the FBI hesitated to call Dylann Roof’s actions “racial terrorism.” Terrorism is defined as a form of political violence, where the threat or use of physical force by individuals or groups is not only intended to influence or disrupt governmental authority but to instill fear and force political change. The FBI designated Roof’s crime as a hate crime perpetrated by a disturbed young man.

    This distinction between calling Roof’s attack a hate crime rather than racially motivated terrorism sparked significant criticism from scholars, activists and commentators. Many argued that Roof’s white supremacist motives and the symbolic target, a historic Black church, made it a clear case of racial terrorism.

    Moving toward a more honest understanding

    This asymmetry matters.

    I argue that it shapes public perception, policy responses and resource allocation. It allows white supremacist violence to flourish under the radar, often dismissed until it becomes undeniable – usually after multiple lives have been lost.

    At the same time, politicians are frequently reluctant to acknowledge the ideological underpinnings of such violence, particularly when those ideologies overlap with their own rhetoric or voter base.

    After the 2022 mass shooting in Buffalo, where the gunman explicitly cited the “Great Replacement theory” in his manifesto, several Republican politicians who had previously echoed similar anti-immigrant rhetoric condemned the violence but avoided addressing the ideology behind it. The Great Replacement theory is a white supremacist conspiracy theory that falsely claims white populations are being deliberately replaced by nonwhite immigrants, especially Muslims, Latinos or Black people, through immigration, higher birth rates and federal government policy.

    Despite the shooter’s clear ideological motivation, once again many officials focused on mental illness or the violence as an isolated case of extremism. The impact of the messages about immigration and demographic change in contributing to a climate of racial fear and conspiracy were left unacknowledged.

    The Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly identified white supremacist violence as one of the top domestic terrorism threats. Investigations related to domestic terrorism and violence have increased significantly over the past few years. In a 2023 interview with “PBS NewsHour,” Seamus Hughes of the University of Nebraska Omaha’s National Counterterrorism, Innovation, Technology and Education Center said that “the FBI was investigating 850 people three years ago. Now they’re investigating 2,700.”

    Yet meaningful, structural reforms, whether in tech and social media regulation, gun control or public education, have remained elusive. I believe connecting the larger social, political and cultural issues that surround extreme violence is critical to building healthy communities.

    Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, as part of the delegation of the President of Russia, visited the St. Petersburg State Conservatory named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov after a large-scale restoration.

    “In 2020, on the instructions of the President, we conducted a thorough analysis, looked at the condition of the building and what needed to be done with it. At that time, the conservatory was in a deplorable state, and our key task was to preserve the building, and then tidy it up and make it more modern. The work began with strengthening the structures, after which specialists began the painstaking restoration of 989 protected items – frescoes, sculptures, paintings, stairs and stucco. Particular attention was paid to the restoration of the unique painting in the house church. I would like to note that now the hall has modern equipment, including a mechanical stage, which allows both classical and modern events to be held. I would like to express my gratitude to the President for his support, as well as to the large team of builders and restorers, without whom we would not have had such a beautiful facility that we can be proud of,” said Marat Khusnullin.

    The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the reconstruction of the conservatory, which began in 2014, faced a number of difficulties, but thanks to the personal instruction of the President, the project was successfully completed. In 2021, the work came under the control of the Single Customer in Construction. Over the course of three years, the building was not only put in order, but also significantly modernized.

    During the restoration, the facades were returned to their historical light beige color, the paintings of the house church by Andrei Ryabushkin and Vasily Belyaev were restored, and about 1,000 unique exhibits were restored, including rare harmoniums and furniture. The usable area of the conservatory increased by more than 600 sq. m due to new glass domes.

    Now the conservatory combines an authentic appearance and cutting-edge technology: the Great Hall is equipped with a variable acoustics system, and 40 classrooms are equipped with modern equipment for recording and playing music.

Often, these creations are published without it being disclosed that they were created using AI. This lack of transparency is misleading for consumers and undermines the work of human creators.

    On platforms such as Amazon, AI-generated books, whether with or without human intervention, are being sold without proper labelling, leading to unfair competition. Similar practices are emerging in the fields of AI-generated music and other forms of digital creation. This creates significant challenges for legitimate creators.

    On the mos.ru portal, city residents can apply for recognition as needing assistance.social services. In the online application, they will need to provide passport details, SNILS, actual address of residence in Moscow, confirm their registration at the place of residence in the capital, as well as the presence of a disability. If this information has already been entered into the user’s personal account mos.ru, then these fields of the application will be filled in automatically.

    The portal also offers electronic services for families with children, including large families, low-income families and parents raising a child with a disability. Thus, Muscovites who are entitled to the relevant benefits can submit an electronic application for monthly compensation via mos.rufood products, compensation in connection with rising cost of living, compensation for the purchase school uniform or apply for regional supplement to pension a child with disabilities.

    The Eastern Cape Provincial Government is today hosting a Provincial Day of Mourning in honour of the victims of last week’s floods.

    Thursday’s ceremony which will take place at King Sabatha Dalindyebo Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College in Mthatha will bring together government leaders and community members to pay tribute to the lives lost in the storms.

    The death toll in the tragedy currently stands at 92, including a teenage girl whose body was recovered along the Mthatha River on Wednesday. The total number of fatalities in Mthatha alone are at 68.

    “Mthatha in the OR Tambo District Municipality remain the hardest hit across the province and the number of deceased persons may continue to rise. Progress has been made with the processing of the bodies as 86 bodies have now been positively identified, with 83 collected by family members.

    “Five bodies remain unidentified. The Provincial Government is still urging members of the public to report any missing persons at their nearest police station to assist ongoing recovery and identification efforts,” provincial spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie said in a statement.

    Rantjie said the provincial government continues to work tirelessly to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to 4 308 individuals that have been left homeless across the province.

    Processes are underway to ensure the provision of Temporary Residential Units (TRUs).

    “Significant progress has also been made in the restoration of critical infrastructure. The OR Tambo District Municipality has reported steady advancements in the restoration of water supply systems. Full restoration is anticipated across all affected areas by Friday, 21 June 2025,” Rantjie said.

    In the Amathole District Municipality, operations at the Butterworth Water Treatment Works (WTW) have resumed following the successful repairs to the high lift and backwash pumps. Water supply has also been restored in most areas.

    However, the provincial government said high-lying communities are still facing limited access as the system stabilises, and this will take some additional time to recover fully.

    Authorities continue to monitor the situation and conduct assessments to quantify the full restoration across all affected communities.

    Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has commended South Africans and the world for the provision of much needed support to reach people in dire need.

    Overcrowded jails fuel prisoner violence

    Violence is rife in overcrowded, unsafe prisons, with offenders nearly twenty per cent more likely to be involved in assaults in too full jails, new research published today (19 June) reveals.

    The rate of prisoner-on-prisoner assaults in men’s prisons increased by 11 per cent in 2024 compared to the previous year as they operated at over 99% capacity. The rate of assaults on hard-working prison staff rose by 13 per cent during the same period.  

    This is the first time a direct link has been drawn between increased violence behind bars and the capacity crisis inherited by the Government that put the public at risk. 

    It reinforces the need for the 14,000 more prison places and landmark sentencing reforms set out by Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood last month which will ensure prisons never run out of space again. The changes will help to cut reoffending and keep our streets safe, part of the Government’s Plan for Change.

    Under these reforms, release from prison will be earned. Offenders who behave badly will be held in prison for longer – helping to reduce violence and drug use. It will mean staff can focus more time on rehabilitating prisoners to reduce the chance of them reoffending on release. 

    The Government has also announced today a £40 million investment in new security measures this year to clamp down on the contraband that fuels violence behind bars. This includes £10 million on anti-drone measures such as exterior netting and reinforced windows.  

    Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, James Timpson, said:   

    These stark findings confirm what we’ve already seen – dangerously full prisons lead to more crime and more violence. This not only risks the safety of our hardworking staff but means our prisons are failing one of their most important functions – cutting crime. 

    We must end this chaos. That is why as part of our Plan for Change we are reforming sentencing and building 14,000 extra prison places by 2031. Our £40 million new investment will also help combat the flow of contraband which creates unsafe environments in our jails.

    The research found that over a one-year period, crowded environments increase the likelihood of an offender being involved in a violent incident by 19 per cent.  

    The £40 million will fund a range of security enhancements this financial year including window replacements, CCTV and control room upgrades, vehicle gates, biometrics and floodlighting. These improved measures will boost safety, combat the influx of drone activity and clamp down on suspected wrongdoing behind bars.  

    It comes as the National Crime Agency – in conjunction with HM Prisons and Probation Service, the National Police Chiefs’ Council and Regional Organised Crime Units – has launched a new initiative stepping up efforts to thwart criminals attempting to smuggle contraband into jails via drones. 

    Two senior police leads will also be embedded into the Corruption and Crime Unit within the Prison and Probation Service to enhance cooperation in tackling key areas like corruption and organised crime in prisons.  

    The investment builds on action the Government has already taken to protect staff from violence, including the rollout of protective body armour for prison officers working within high-security settings and a trial of tasers beginning later this summer. 

    The Government has set aside £7 billion to fund 14,000 extra places by 2031 to deliver the prison capacity needed to keep the public safe.

    Abdul Qadir Davoodi, owner of Wardak Supermarket in Lea Road, made the illegal sales during 2 test purchases.

    He pleaded guilty to 4 charges under Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016, one charge under the Nicotine Inhaling Products (Age of sale and Proxy Purchasing) Regulations 2015 and one charge under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

    Davoodi was fined £2,500 and ordered to pay court costs of £4,500 and a victim surcharge of £1,000.

    Dudley Magistrates Court also made a forfeiture and destruction order against the items seized.

    Trading Standards officers at the council originally received a complaint that Wardak Supermarket, also known as Lifestyle Express, was selling single cigarettes of foreign origin to children.

    A covert test purchase was organised and in July 2023, a 17 year old volunteer was illegally sold a disposable e-cigarette/vape by Davoodi.

    A second covert test purchase was carried out a year later when another 17 year old volunteer was again illegally sold an e-cigarette/vape.

    A follow-up inspection of the store by Trading Standards officers in August 2024 found 69 non compliant e-cigarettes/vapes under the counter. These products were seized.

    Since 1 June, 2025, sales of disposable vapes have been banned across the UK.

    During the court hearing on 13 June, Davoodi told Dudley Magistrates that he had now put a new training regime in place for his staff, had installed CCTV and had put a refusals book system in place.

    Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, City of Wolverhampton Council’s cabinet member for resident services, said: “This prosecution is the latest successful step in our efforts to protect city residents.

    “Our Trading Standards officers are taking firm action against shops that put young people at risk, we will not tolerate this type of behaviour in Wolverhampton.

    “As this prosecution shows, businesses need to be aware that selling age restricted products to underage customers can have serious consequences.

    “If you break the law, you will be held accountable. We will not hesitate to take action against those who put people at risk and undermine the hard work of legitimate businesses.”

  • MIL-OSI China: Shanghai film festival spotlights upcoming Chinese blockbusters

    Nine highly anticipated Chinese blockbusters, including projects from directors Guan Hu, Rao Xiaozhi, Lu Yang and Feng Xiaogang, were previewed at a special event during the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) on June 17.

    Chen Guo, managing director of the Shanghai International Film and TV Events Center, said the blockbuster productions reflected the Chinese film industry’s ability to bring together leading talent and resources.

    “These films not only showcase the highest standards of Chinese cinema but also exert significant influence across the global film market,” Chen said at the 2025 Chinese Epic Showcase event. “The nine featured productions embody the collective expertise and dedication of Chinese filmmakers, carrying the industry’s and audiences’ highest expectations. Together, they will inject powerful momentum into the film market’s growth for the second half of this year.”

    The nine productions include Guan Hu and Fei Zhenxiang’s “Dong Ji Island,” Light Chaser Animation’s “Curious Tales of a Temple,” Rao Xiaozhi’s sequel to “A Cool Fish,” Da Peng’s “The Lychee Road,” Lu Yang’s “A Writer’s Odyssey 2” and “Echoes of Encounter,” Cao Baoping’s “Man Huang Jin Di,” and Feng Xiaogang’s “I Know Who You Are.” Several are scheduled for summer theatrical release.

    “Dong Ji Island,” six years in development and part of the Filmed for IMAX program, tells the story of Chinese fishermen from the Dongji Islands who risked their lives during World War II to rescue British prisoners of war after the Japanese transport ship Lisbon Maru was torpedoed and sank. The film features extensive underwater sequences, with more than 100 crew members receiving aquatic training and over 60 days spent on underwater filming, co-director Fei Zhenxiang said. The film is set for release on Aug. 8.

    “Curious Tales of a Temple,” an animated fantasy anthology from the studio behind “Chang An,” is set for release on July 12. Yu Zhou, co-founder and president of Light Chaser Animation, said the studio sought to honor the literary legacy of Pu Songling, a Qing dynasty writer, and that the project was its most demanding to date.

    Another anticipated title is “The Lychee Road,” due out July 25. Adapted from Ma Boyong’s novel, the film follows a Tang Dynasty official tasked with delivering lychees to the royal court. Director Da Peng described it as a comedy about an “ordinary man giving his all against life’s unfairness and helplessness.”

    Director Lu Yang presented two films: “A Writer’s Odyssey 2,” a fantasy adventure in the Filmed for IMAX program, and “Echoes of Encounter,” a science fiction romance set in a post-apocalyptic Nanjing and based on Tianrui Shuofu’s award-winning novel “Once Upon a Time in Nanjing.”

    “We explored the Filmed for IMAX program to capture our grand-scale scenes and innovative action sequences,” Lu said. “The IMAX format extends beyond mere larger visuals — it expands imagination itself. It allows us to fully convey the fearless courage we want to present to audiences, along with our passionate devotion to the people and ideals we believe in.”

    Director Cao Baoping, known for crime dramas such as “Trouble Makers” and “The Dead End,” introduced his latest film, “Man Huang Jin Di,” at the event. Set in a lawless region where crime is rampant, the film stars Jackson Yee, Duan Yihong, Huang Bo and Zhang Yi. It is scheduled for release later this year.

    “I Know Who You Are,” the latest film from director Feng Xiaogang, marks his return to period drama after an eight-year break since “Youth.” Starring Lei Jiayin and Hu Ge, the film follows a police officer’s 40-year search for a spy who turns out to be his neighbor. The story spans several decades and depicts social change through detailed recreations of daily life and architecture.

    Other films promoted at the event include the fantasy romance “Gift from a Cloud” by Yao Tingting, which is set for release on Aug. 29, and a dark comedy sequel to Rao Xiaozhi’s hit “A Cool Fish,” scheduled for release on July 5. The sequel is also part of the Filmed for IMAX program.

    Faced with the choice in their daily lives, their work or their politics, why do some people decide to keep quiet, to censor themselves in anticipatory obedience, even if they’re not ordered to do so?

    In this episode of The Conversation Weekly, we talk to self-censorship expert Daniel Bar-Tal about what drives people to censor themselves, and its consequences for society.

    It was Daniel Bar-Tal’s experiences serving in the Israeli army that prompted him to begin studying self-censorship. “ I was observing all kind of phenomenon that are going on within a country that is engaged in intractable conflict,” he told us.
    Bar-Tal, an emeritus professor in the school of education at Tel Aviv University, began to notice that self-censorship was essential in societies, like Israel, living in conflict. He explains:

     There are all kind of directives which develop censorship, in the army, in school, teachers are told what they should do and say. But self-censorship is going beyond this. So it means that nobody tells you that you must say A or B or C, but you feel an obligation by yourself to say certain things without any order from above.

    Bar-Tal assembled a team of researchers from different disciplines to examine how self-censorship plays out across different sectors of a society, from politics to academia to journalism. They found three main motivations why people self-censor: as a defence mechanism for their in-group; out of fear; and to win rewards.

    It’s all about babies this week (16 – 21 June) in Manchester as parents, carers and tiny tots are invited to join in with a whole host of baby and toddler friendly activities, designed to educate and entertain parents, carers, and little ones alike.

    Activities are happening every day this week in a packed programme of free, fun-filled stuff for parents, carers and their babies to enjoy right across the city – all aimed at supporting a child’s development from birth and before, to two years old.

    The week kicked off on Monday with a day of activities at Central Library and Manchester Art Gallery that saw mums, dads and babies take part in everything from Baby DJing sessions, Dance Like a Mother (or dad) workouts, to have-a-go sessions playing musical instruments and singing with the Hallé Musical Stars.

    The day also included plenty of opportunities for toddlers and their carers to get messy together with creative play sessions, as well baby massage and yoga classes – showing carers how to enjoy moments of calm and connection with their babies in what can sometimes seem like a busy and noisy world.

    The rest of the week sees many of the same activities and more taking place across the city, in cultural venues, leisure centres, libraries, local Family Hubs, children’s centres, and also in the city’s parks – which will host free family fun days for all on Saturday 21 June.

    With family splash and swim sessions, pool parties, sensory play, mini-me fitness and fun sessions for toddlers and their grown-ups, plus groovy dance classes, as well as walk and talk rambles round local areas and healthy child drop-ins with Health Visitors, there are plenty of free activities of all kinds for families to get involved in. 

    There’s also plenty of practical advice on offer through the week for parents and carers – from preventing common accidents in the home and first aid taster sessions, to Tiny Talk Baby Signing sessions to help teach even the youngest babies to begin to communicate long before they’re able to speak, helping parents and their babies to understand each other from the earliest of days together.

    Manchester’s annual Baby Week takes place at an important time for Manchester as the city journeys towards being recognised by UNICEF as a Child Friendly City – the best possible place for a child to grow up in, a place where children’s rights are understood and the voices of children and young people matter.
