    “I want to commend Jamie Bryson for bringing a case before the courts concerning the imposition of Irish signage at Grand Central. In doing so, Mr Bryson has accomplished more on this issue than all the Unionist parties combined.

    “This morning’s court hearing made it abundantly clear that the lack of action from DUP and UUP MLAs is, in fact, aiding the Sinn Fein Minister responsible.

    “I note with concern that the Department for Infrastructure’s legal representatives cited the complete absence of signatures—beyond my own — on my petition against the dual-language signage as justification for claiming Minister Kimmins’ decision was not controversial.

    “This flatly contradicts claims by some on social media that failing to support the petition made no difference. Quite the opposite is true: that inaction is now being used as legal cover for the imposition of signage which the local loyalist community strongly oppose.

    “It is therefore incumbent upon every Unionist MLA in the Assembly to explain why they failed to support my petition, and to publicly clarify their position on this matter. Letters making this clear to the court are a matter of urgency.

    “When a Sinn Fein-led department cites Unionist inaction as proof of consensus, it’s time for serious reflection — and accountability.”

    Large and small businesses who have carried out exceptional work in hiring, retaining and supporting disabled people in the workplace have been recognised in the annual Disability Confident Awards in London.

    • Businesses supporting disabled people in the workplace have been commended in an award ceremony.
    • The Disability Confident scheme is a Government initiative designed to encourage employers to recruit, retain, and develop disabled people.
    • Minister Sir Stephen Timms, praised the efforts to support disabled people in work.

    Large and small businesses who have carried out exceptional work in hiring, retaining and supporting disabled people in the workplace have been recognised in the annual Disability Confident Awards in London.

    Judged by DWP’s Disability Confident team, winners were chosen from a wide selection of strong nominations ranging from tech companies developing accessible equipment to a heritage trust breaking down barriers for disabled people.

    The two winners, chosen for their work in the travel industry and fitness sector, were:

    • Small organisation winner (less than 250 employees) – Seable, a bespoke travel agent who provide experiences for people who are visually impaired. The company hires blind and partially sighted people who share their lived experiences, so holidays reflect the needs of their customers.

    • Big organisation winner (More than 250 employees) – The Gym Group, who run schemes such as the Inclusive Traineeship which helps disabled people in the workplace with dedicated support staff and programmes to help them break into the fitness industry.

    The Disability Confident scheme is a Government initiative designed to encourage employers to recruit, retain, and develop disabled people. It has more than 19,000 members, with more than 12 million employees working in their businesses.

    To become a Disability Confident employer, organisations must provide accessible and inclusive recruitment practices and a public commitment to supporting employees with a disability. These also signal to disabled jobseekers which companies may be suitable for their needs.

She began her journey in Turin, where she was sent from Argentina to study, then moved on to India, where she spent three years, and finally to Thailand.“I arrived in Rome on the night of April 23 and didn’t manage to pay my last respects to Francis in St. Peter’s Basilica until April 25. I stayed from 9 in the morning until 6 in the evening. I prayed and talked with him in front of his coffin, and I am sure he was listening to me. I was very impressed by the enormous influx of people from all over the world,” reports the nun.“This morning, April 30, I was able to say goodbye to him at his grave in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore,” Sister Ana Rosa continued. ”It made a deep impression on me to stand in front of the white marble, and I was very happy that he is exactly where he always wanted to be. We are a very close family, and although we hadn’t spoken to each other for a long time, we always knew everything about each other. My father was very close to ‘Jorge’, as he continued to call him, and he always knew everything he was doing. We were baptized in the same basilica in Buenos Aires where the Don Bosco sisters work. He celebrated the funerals of my parents, our grandfather, and my sister’s wedding. We knew that he always called his sick sister on Sunday afternoons and that we talked about family matters. I celebrated my 80th birthday with him here in Rome after I had been in Argentina and before I returned to Thailand.“We often spoke with him about missionary work. He wanted to learn about the relationship between priests and Buddhists, who make up the majority of the population in Thailand. We always shared the idea of looking into each other’s faces and seeing what the other person needs. I hope that the cardinals who will meet in the conclave will follow Francis’ line for a Church of the people,” emphasizes the missionary.The FMA are represented in Thailand by eight communities and are active in the field of education. Specifically, they are located in the northwest of the country in the city of Chom Tong, in the northeast in the cities of Phon Sung and Udon Thani, further south in the city of Bam Pong, in San Phran, and finally with two communities in Bangkok.Sister Ana Rosa is currently working in the community in Bam Pong. Due to her age and health, she no longer teaches, but helps where needed and assists with the “chronicles” that the house collects every year from January to December.“There are 80 FMA sisters throughout Thailand,” explains the nun, ”and 17 of us are in Bam Pong. Our community is the first house that the FMA sisters opened in this country in 1933. Our pioneers supported and trained the local sisters and took in the first sisters who had been expelled from China. There are very few Christians in Bam Pong, but we have a very good relationship with the Buddhists, who also attend our schools. Education is of fundamental importance to us, and in order to give as many people as possible a chance, we have the lowest school fees of any school in the country. Our schools are overcrowded; in Bam Pong alone, we have 3,200 students, of whom at most a hundred are Christians. We teach the young girls the charisma of our founder, Mother Mazzarello. The schools in our communities range from nursery to middle school. They are mainly girls’ schools, with the exception of the kindergarten, which is mixed, and another school located outside the city. In this school, we have accepted the request of parents who have several children to accompany them all, so boys and girls can attend school together until the third grade.”“The Catholic community has a strong presence in Bam Pong,” concludes Sister Ana Rosa. ”There is a Capuchin monastery, a hospital run by the Camillian Missionaries, a Salesian Don Bosco school, the parish of St. Joseph, which is very large and run by the Salesians of Don Bosco, and a cemetery right next to our parish.” (Fides Agency 30/4/2025)

    Warning issued against unauthorised building work in Bassetlaw

    The Environment Agency has issued a warning against unauthorised building near rivers and flood defences in Bassetlaw, North Nottinghamshire.

    • Unauthorised works prompts warning to residents, landowners and developers
    • Environmental permits may be needed before works can begin
    • Offenders could face an unlimited fine or two years imprisonment

    The Environment Agency is reminding residents, landowners and developers in Bassetlaw about the law for carrying out work near main rivers and flood defences.

    Among the Environment Agency’s statutory duties are powers to manage flood risk from the sea and main rivers.

    These types of works, known as flood risk activities, may need an environmental permit before they can begin.

    The warning comes after the Environment Agency has become aware of unauthorised works in the Bassetlaw district in north Nottinghamshire.

    The environment permitting process ensures that proposed works are not going to increase flood risk or cause other environmental harm.

    A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said:

    We are encouraging anyone planning work near a river or flood defence to seek advice early.

    People may need an environmental permit before they can begin the work.

    It is a criminal offence to undertake unauthorised flood risk activities and offenders could face an unlimited fine and up to 2 years imprisonment.

On 14 March 2025, a proposed amendment to the legislation was introduced by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, seeking i.a. to authorise a third order book to be used in the offering to ensure the participation of all investor groups. The proposed amendment is currently under review by the Icelandic Parliament.

    On 5 July 2024, Landsbankinn Corporate Finance was appointed as the Ministry’s independent financial advisor. On 21 August 2024, the Ministry announced the appointment of Barclays, Citi, and Kvika as joint global coordinators in connection with the offering.

    Ofqual launches next phase in British Sign Language GCSE development

    New British Sign Language (BSL) consultation marks significant progress towards a fresh qualification that has the potential to connect communities.

    Ofqual has today launched a consultation on the rules that will govern the assessment of the new GCSE in British Sign Language (BSL), bringing the development of this unique qualification a step forward. 

    This second Ofqual consultation follows extensive collaborative work over the last 18 months to ensure the new qualification will be high quality. This has involved working with awarding organisations and BSL subject matter specialists, including those within the deaf community.

    Amanda Swann, Executive Director for General Qualifications at Ofqual, said:

    The GCSE in British Sign Language presents a great opportunity for more people to learn this important language. We recognise the positive impact this could have to improve communication between deaf and hearing communities, and we encourage everyone to share their views in response to our consultation.

    This consultation addresses the specific rules exam boards will need to follow when developing the qualification. The Department for Education sets the curriculum for the new GCSE in BSL while Ofqual ensures the assessments are valid, reliable and fair for all students. 

    Following the consultation and review period, Ofqual expects to confirm its decision on the qualification rules in autumn 2025. From that point, interested exam boards will develop their specific offers, which must then go through Ofqual’s accreditation process.

    “Creating a completely new qualification requires thorough development,” Ms Swann added. “While we understand the desire to see this qualification available quickly, our primary responsibility is to ensure it meets the high standards expected of all GCSEs so that grades will be trusted.”

    It’s fantastic to see this incredibly important GCSE one step closer to being taught in classrooms.

    British Sign Language is a rich and vibrant language, and this qualification will break down barriers between deaf and hearing communities while giving young people the opportunity to learn a new skill. Our priority is ensuring this qualification is the best it can be for students.

    This GCSE, alongside wider work with our independent curriculum review will ensure all young people benefit from a broad and rich curriculum that gives them the tools to achieve and thrive.

    In 2025, under the national project “Infrastructure for Life”, about 2 thousand km of regional and local roads leading to tourist attractions: unique natural complexes, architectural monuments, religious buildings, historical landmarks will be brought into compliance with the regulations. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

    “High-quality roads play a key role in the development of the tourism industry, providing access to both popular and new destinations, memorable places and unique natural complexes, increasing the safety of movement and the comfort of travel. This is especially relevant today, when domestic tourism, including automobile tourism, is actively developing in the country. Thanks to the national project “Infrastructure for Life”, in 2025 we plan to bring about 2 thousand km of regional and local roads leading to tourist attractions up to standard,” said Marat Khusnullin.

    The development of domestic tourism is one of the key growth points for regions.

    “High-quality infrastructure can turn a small settlement into a popular tourist center, attracting thousands of visitors every year. In turn, the development of the hotel business, restaurant sector and entertainment sector provides new jobs, increases the income of local residents and contributes to the overall prosperity of the region. This year, under the federal project “Regional and Local Road Network”, repair work will be carried out at 434 sites included in tourist routes,” said Minister of Transport Roman Starovoit.

    Transport accessibility is as important to travelers as service and comfortable accommodation. That is why in recent years, special attention has been paid to the renovation of such roads.

    “Over the six years of implementing the national project “Safe High-Quality Roads”, we have managed to bring more than 9.7 thousand km of tourist routes into compliance, which is about 2 thousand objects – sections of roads and artificial structures. Getting to many attractions has become faster and more comfortable, many interesting places have become more popular, because now there is a good road leading there. The extensive joint work of federal and regional project teams to update tourist routes will continue in the new national project “Infrastructure for Life” and will be aimed at achieving the main goal – improving the quality of life of Russians,” emphasized Deputy Head of the Federal Road Agency Igor Kostyuchenko.

    In the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, thanks to the national project, the reconstruction of one of the most important regional facilities continues – a tunnel at the 21st km of the Chikola-Matsuta-Komi-Art highway. Its length is 269 m. Now specialists are carrying out the final finishing of the renovated artificial structure and preparing it for commissioning.

    The route along this road provides transport access to one of the most picturesque and ecologically significant areas of the region, opening access to unique natural landscapes, historical and cultural sites and tourist bases of the republic. For example, in the high-mountain part of the Digorskoye Gorge, where the route leads, there are eight tourist bases and mountaineering camps. In addition, here travelers can visit such cultural and natural monuments as the Eagle’s Nest observation deck, the Karaugom glacier, the Tamisk thermal springs and the Uastyrdzhi monument.

    In the Republic of Crimea, thanks to the national project, major repairs are underway on a 20 km section of the Alushta-Sudak-Feodosia highway. This is one of the most picturesque routes in Crimea, which runs along the coast and mountain ranges.

    In the Kostroma region this year, a 3.2 km long access road to the village of Medvedki will be repaired. The road connecting the settlement with the Kostroma-Susanino-Buy highway leads to the oldest stud farm, founded in 1891 in Medvedki by the merchant Skalozubov. The stable buildings built here with a unique tent-type riding arena have no analogues in Russia and are an architectural monument of federal significance.

    The Volgograd International Airport (Gumrak) has been officially named Stalingrad. The order to this effect was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

    The airport’s history began in the 1930s, when the Volga Directorate of the Civil Air Fleet created the Stalingrad Air Detachment, based in the vicinity of the Voroponovo railway station. Since 1936, the airport provided passenger and cargo flights. During the fierce battles with the Nazi invaders, it was significantly destroyed.

    After the victory in Stalingrad, military enterprises were actively restored, new production sites were built. The city’s population grew rapidly, and the civilian airport Voroponovo, located near Stalingrad, could no longer cope with the increased flow of passenger and cargo traffic. In 1952, the North Caucasus Civil Aviation Administration decided to transfer the air harbor with personnel to the Gumrak airfield, where a transport aviation unit was created. Until 1961, the airport was called Stalingrad (Gumrak), which is confirmed by a number of archival documents.

    The request to return the airport’s historical name was made by veterans of the Volgograd Region. The region’s governor, Andrei Bocharov, conveyed it to President Vladimir Putin.

    The head of state supported the initiative.

    The Deputy Prime Minister assessed the educational infrastructure of the region and spoke with students.

    At the Mariupol State University named after A.I. Kuindzhi (MSU named after A.I. Kuindzhi), Dmitry Chernyshenko talked to the participants of the project “University Shifts”, which allows the younger generation to consciously choose a profession and a university at an early age. Over three years, the project has involved more than 44 thousand children from the regions of Russia. The children told about their personal experience of participating in the project.

    “It’s great that you communicate with your peers, broaden your horizons. At the same time, you have a very clearly structured method of thinking and values. And you can, like Danko with a burning heart, follow your mission, lead and inspire,” the Deputy Prime Minister noted.

    Dmitry Chernyshenko assessed the progress of restoration work and the university infrastructure. In particular, the university has a youth laboratory – the Laboratory of Media Literacy and Media Research. The Deputy Prime Minister handed over a certificate for the purchase of a video studio to its representatives.

    Also, a multifunctional sports ground was opened at Kuindzhi Moscow State University. It was built in six months and, along with other sports grounds of the university, became part of the sports cluster – they are being created on the initiative of the Ministry of Education and Science as part of the program for the socio-economic development of the reunited entities.

    The new site has four locations: a mini-football field, a volleyball and basketball court, an area for passing the standards of the All-Russian physical education and sports complex “Ready for Labor and Defense”, and an area with multifunctional exercise machines.

    The Azov Marine Institute (AMI), a branch of the Sevastopol State University, trains specialists for the maritime industry. Currently, it is the only specialized higher education institution on the shores of the Azov Sea. In the future, it is planned to launch secondary specialized education programs and advanced training courses for already working maritime specialists. To ensure that the training is as practice-oriented as possible, several thematic classrooms were equipped with mock-ups, models, and other training elements during the recently completed repairs.

    The Deputy Prime Minister handed over a certificate for the acquisition of a vehicle to the institute’s management and assessed the university’s infrastructure and equipment, including training and sports simulators – AMI is now one of the most modern training bases for future sailors in Russia. Among the professional simulators are bridge and engine room simulators, a separate large-scale complex for practicing actions in emergency situations on ships.

    During the visit, Dmitry Chernyshenko visited the Mariupol Construction Specialized College, one of the flagships of secondary vocational education in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The educational institution is part of the educational and production cluster “Construction Industry”. As part of the federal project “Professionalism” of the national project “Youth and Children”, students master promising specialties and gain practical experience, which they demonstrated to the Deputy Prime Minister.

    “The most important thing is that the working specialties that you teach are based on the most modern technologies that you actually use in technological processes. For this, you need materials and teachers,” he told the college staff.

    In the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Mariupol, Dmitry Chernyshenko discussed work issues with Metropolitan Vladimir of Donetsk and Mariupol. The main topic was the key areas of upcoming construction and restoration work.     Construction of a bridge crossing over the Tumannaya River is beginning in Primorsky Krai. The automobile bridge will connect Russia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Currently, only a railway bridge and air traffic operate between Russia and the DPRK. The automobile bridge will increase cargo traffic and develop passenger transportation.

    The total length of the bridge crossing (with access roads) is 4.7 km. The length of the bridge itself is 1 km. The length of the Russian side is 424 m, the Korean side is 581 m. The width of the bridge is 7 m (two traffic lanes).

    Estimated construction time is one and a half years.

    A vehicle checkpoint will be set up near the bridge crossing.

    I am pleased to welcome you to a significant event – the ceremony to begin construction of a road bridge across the Tumannaya River at the junction of the borders of the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

    This is a truly significant stage for Russian-Korean relations. Its significance goes far beyond a simple engineering task. It symbolizes our common desire to strengthen friendly, good-neighborly relations, and to increase interregional cooperation. We are creating a reliable foundation for closer cooperation, a path for open and fruitful dialogue, the rapprochement of our peoples, an increase in the number of trips, meetings, exchange of new impressions, and acquaintance with the history and traditions of Russia and North Korea.

    Last year, Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Chairman of State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Kim Jong-un signed a fundamental interstate Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This document secured the entry of our relations to a new qualitative level that meets the requirements of the time, and created the necessary conditions for launching mutually beneficial joint projects.

    Of course, the key priority for us is the construction of a bridge crossing, through which year-round automobile traffic will go. Currently, the only operating route is the railway connection along the Druzhby Bridge across the Tumannaya River. But its capabilities are no longer sufficient.

    The future bridge is of particular importance for the Russian Far Eastern Federal District, and above all for Primorsky Krai, where additional opportunities will appear for businesses and local residents. The transport and logistics infrastructure will begin to develop more actively.

    Another route that will be laid here will allow entrepreneurs to significantly increase the volume of transportation and reduce transportation costs, will ensure reliable and stable supplies of various products, which will contribute to the expansion of trade and economic cooperation between our countries. And of course, good prospects will open up for tourism.
